After being overweight for 35 years, Rachel Ricketts following the principles of The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme, lost 3 stone in just over 3 months and successfully went on to maintain her weight loss. With a purpose to help as many people as possible to have the life-changing experience that she had of finally getting her weight under control, Rachel qualified Rachel Ricketts, as a weight loss consultant and nutritional adviser. She has never looked back, having helped over 6,000 people in the last 16 years, to bring their dieting days to an end once and for all.

Weight Loss Consultant

As we get older, the metabolic rate slows down due to such things as pregnancy, menopause, lack of sleep, stress and medication. In addition, different types of food and drink can either increase or decrease the metabolic rate. All of these factors can cause difficulty and frustration with weight loss! The purpose of The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme is to help improve your metabolic rate and address any eating or drinking habits that have contributed to your unwanted weight.

“I am delighted with the results of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme. I always had difficulty in losing weight because of an under active thyroid, but I had no problem losing 3 stone with the programme. I couldn’t have done it without the support, my consultant was always so helpful. I would recommend this programme to anyone. It has been a life changing experience for me.” Betty from Yorkshire

For those who are not able to visit, a very successful remote support service is provided throughout the UK and overseas, distance is no object. In addition to the expected average weight loss of 7-14Ib per month, clients are frequently experiencing improvements in one or more of the following: blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and energy levels. Not only are they delighted with their health improvements but they report very positive feedback from their doctors: “My doctor congratulated me that I was no longer in the pre-diabetic range. I am over the moon!” “I have just been told by my doctor that I no longer need blood pressure medication, due to having lost 3 stone!” “All my lady patients are struggling to lose weight, but you’ve lost 2 stone despite being on thyroxine – well done!”

Rachel and her team offer personalised one-to-one support which will help you make the necessary changes that allow you not only to lose weight, but also give you the know-how of keeping it off once and for all.

Call now for a free consultation.

The support is non-judgemental and motivating which is very welcomed! In between the weekly consultations, e-mail support is available.

PERSONALITY

Robert Webb is a comedian, writer and actor, Tim Saunders found out all about his journey to acclaim, awards and nudist beaches!

CAUGHT IN A WEBB

television favourite, Robert Webb is well known for his collaborations with David Mitchell and stars alongside him in the award-winning That Mitchell & Webb Sound and the Bafta awardwinning That Mitchell & Webb Look. They partner up again when he plays Jeremy in the cult sitcom Peep Show. Along with all his television work, Robert is also a popular awards host, speaker and writer. Robert attended Cambridge University and when he was a student there he visited Brighton. It wasn’t long after he joined the renowned sketch troupe, Cambridge Footlights that he became one of a cast of five in the Summer Revue, which was going on a UK tour. At the last minute tour manager Simon secured the Brighton Dome for one night only. This meant that the show did not feature in the theatre programme and there were no posters anywhere. “What we got in Brighton was a 2,000-seat venue on the night of the 1994 World Cup Final,” recalls Robert, who was used to playing 200 to 300-seat theatres that were half

full. “When I asked how many tickets we’d sold, Simon conceded that the presales were ‘on the disappointing side of brilliant.’ When pressed, he said that the actual figure, ‘if we really want to dwell on a literal figure’, was ‘something in the vicinity of fifteen’. When he came under some pressure to clarify, Simon admitted: it was twelve! He suggested we might need to go flyering. I looked out upon the vast sea of empty red seats, disappearing into the distance on three tiers.” Robert took his allocation of 300 leaflets and when the others couldn’t see him, threw them away “and headed for the nudist beach.” “I was seven when I saw a grownup news report about the opening of Brighton naturist beach in 1980. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. But these people are bare! Outside! They don’t seem to mind that everyone can see!” Finding himself there in the flesh that hot day in 1994 Robert couldn’t resist. “It was a hot day, I hadn’t got any swimming trunks and I couldn’t think of anything better to do. I peeled off my Footlights Tour T-shirt before I

got there. Somehow it wouldn’t do to be recognised as a Cambridge revue performer in such an environment… The clientele appeared to be 80 per cent single men.” Only a year earlier Robert had met David Mitchell at a Cinderella audition. They put together their first project two years later. As an actor Robert starred in comedy TV series Bruiser, was Robin in The Smoking Room and Bill Hathaway in Blessed. He had a recurring role as Jedrington Secret-Past in The Bleak Old Shop of Stuff and starred as Dan in Fresh Meat. In 2013 he starred as Neil Tilly in the TV mini-series Ambassadors and has also starred in the films Confetti, Magicians, and The Wedding Video. Well-known for playing Bertie Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, Robert has performed at Chichester Festival Theatre. His performance helped the comedy win the Olivier Award for Best Comedy. Fellow Cambridge Footlight Alumnus Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie have also played Jeeves and Wooster and Robert points out

that theirs were smaller screen roles, whereas his was “very theatrical and very mad.” Robert’s mother died when he was just 17 and in the lower sixth form preparing for his A-levels. She had developed a cough, which turned out to be aggressive lung cancer. Robert had to deal with the “very painful weeks and months afterwards,” he explained, “She went from finding a lump to being bed-ridden in about five months. There was just enough time to get it into my head that she was going to die. Afterwards, there was just a black hole in the house – I was never going to hear her voice or see her face again.” This devastating ordeal, which he says, shaped him, did not prevent Robert from academic achievement but not surprisingly he did have to re-take his A-levels. He had spoken to his mum about whether he would need to help stepfather Derek bring up his young sister, who was only two at the time. His mum had said that wouldn’t be

necessary pushing Robert to pursue his dreams. Following his mother’s death, Robert went to live with his dad who had become half-deaf from his work as a woodman wearing no ear protection making communication difficult. He confided it was often best over a pint. Robert was determined to go to Cambridge to pursue his comedy ambition; following in the footsteps

of greats like John Cleese, Sir David Frost and Peter Cook and he secured a place at Robinson College where he eventually became vice-president of theatre club the Footlights. Robert’s mum was, “a working class woman who was certainly clever, but not clever enough to avoid getting pregnant before finishing her A-levels.” Robert remembers how she always had a part-time job such as a school secretary, a hotel secretary or a bar worker, and wanted the best for her children in whatever they chose as their career. Growing up, adults referred to Robert as painfully shy and quiet. His sense of humour gradually developed. His parents split up when he was five years old, his mother soon remarrying a man called Derek with whom she had a daughter, Anna-Beth. Robert chose not to refer to Derek as dad. It was while Robert was at home in his bedroom that he came up with his early sketches including The Price is Slight (TV game-show parody) and The GAY Team (parody of children’s TV action drama). “In my sophisticated opinion, doing ‘the gay voice’ has no place in the comedy of 1987, even in Lincolnshire where literally no one is meant to be gay,” he says.

His part-time job at Gateway supermarket earned him £1.36 an hour and saw Robert spending “the hours between five and seven on my sixteenth birthday in the same way as I usually would on a Thursday – stacking shelves.” Although the youngest parttimer he was “as quick as Tony with a price-gun.” Born 10 months after the death of his eldest brother Martin, who was six, from meningitis to parents Paul and Pat (she hated Patricia) Robert has two older brothers, Mark and Andrew. In 2007 Robert married comedienne Abigail Burdess, who has also starred alongside him. The couple have two children, Esme and Dory. Of bringing up daughters, Robert says: “Parenting girls makes you quite gender-conscious – it’s almost impossible to fight the power of pink. It’s not such a terrible thing to want to be a princess when you’re five, but it would be nice if there were some other options.” And how did his day sunbathing on the nudist beach turn out? Well, while there Robert met another nude man called Bryan with whom he had a conversation about local house prices. It bored him senseless, he confides. l How Not to be a Boy by Robert Webb is out now.

LOCATION

Hamlet of the

Weald

Located just 36 miles from the centre of London, Haywards Heath is set amid rolling countryside yet has swift road and rail connection to the coast and capital. Ruth Lawrence brings us the highlights of the historic town

H

aywards Heath has become a well loved commuter town which owes its expansion to the railway which arrived in 1841; its history however began in the 13th century when it was first mentioned in deeds as ‘Heyworthe’. Much of the Weald at that time was forested for conserving game and hunting, for the local magnate and we know from the Domesday records that reserves called ‘hays’ were special enclosures for keeping animals for sport. In 1638, during the lordship of the Hardham family, details of tracks, roads, property owners and tenants were recorded to create a survey of the ‘Waste of the Manor of Heyworthe’. The Waste was the part

of the manor where land was poor and uncultivated and Nicholas Hardham employed ‘bound treaders’ to help his surveyor record the land. Their efforts are celebrated today in a town walk created by the Hayward’s Heath Society who interpreted the original documents, which retraces the steps of Hardham and his helpers centuries ago. The walk offers an incredibly detailed stroll through the distant past of the town, highlighting places where, although the physical landmarks are long gone, the life of that day is conjured up through the original words that correspond to the locations on the map. The town was the scene of a fierce battle in the 17th century Civil War. On the 13th November 1642, the

main royalist army advanced down the Thames from Oxford and was met at Turnham Green by ‘trained bands’. A second army soon marched into Sussex and after camping at Cuckfield was met by a smaller parliamentarian force at Muster Green in Haywards Heath. After an hour’s brutal fighting, the royalist army had lost 200 troops and the survivors fled across Ditchling Common to the south. The royalist army largely consisted of forcibly recruited locals who were unequipped to deal with the more disciplined parliamentary force and the eventual goal, which had been to capture Lewes for the King was abandoned as the original force retreated back to Chichester. Now, digital formats mean that films can be shot in high definition and viewed instantly which means that high quality film making is within the reach of anyone with the creativity to imagine their own projects. Haywards Heath has the advantage of having three parks; Victoria Park is in the centre of town with expansive views of the South Downs. Kick start your 2019 with a healthy outlook for mind, body, heart and home designed to last you all through the year. Sasha Kanal tells you how

S

o here we are again. It’s January 2019, the last of the Christmas detritus has been dutifully cleared away and the children are already talking about Easter. There’s not much to look forward to now until April rolls along, right? Wrong! There is so much to look forward to and yes, there’s work to be done, but it’s all good and will hopefully benefit you no end. So read on dear health conscious readers to get the best out of the year ahead and yourself. And don’t forget, take it easy… MIND Take a mindful approach to your health in 2019. A word that’s so often overused, but here, what’s meant is a more caring approach to yourself and your body. Be kind to yourself, starting with your head. Often our default internal monologue is set at something between

attitude. Exercise is so very important, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that it’s there to benefit us. Carrying a guilty heart and negative mind-set around if we miss one spinning session is not going to do that. Similarly, January is not the time to go hell for leather into a full on detox or brutal exercise regime when you aren’t used to it. This is where it inevitably ends badly, as indifference people start and negativity. things that are Too often we see exercise as work far too different “Gosh I’m so stupid! the energy dip afterwards. Cut down on alcohol for January or give up completely if you can. Fancy that third glass of Merlot? Have a big glass of water with cordial instead when you do and then see how you feel. Alternatively, take a warm bath with calming essential oils instead of filling your glass. It’s surprising how the little things can break a bigger cycle or habit. Sometimes all it takes is just a minor shift. HEART Invest in yourself! Book a relaxing

massage, acupuncture session or spa day somewhere and give yourself something to look forward to throughout the darkest months. Similarly, sign up to learn a new skill or language and challenge yourself to try something new and master it. HOME With a ‘hygge’ and not heavy heart, reset your home for January and beyond. With the fuss and clutter of Christmas out of the way, now is the time to get some fresh, lightly scented

natural wax candles in and light them religiously come evening. Keep some fairy lights up in the kitchen to add some glow to this more functional area. Buy a sheepskin or faux fur rug in the January sales and drape them across your sofa – Scandi style. Invest in an outdoor fire pit and light it up on a cold, sunny winter’s afternoon. There’s nothing nicer than wrapping up and sitting around the primal light and warmth of those flickering flames, drinking hot chocolate and toasting marshmallows. Finally, say no to fast fashion and mindless consumption. Fast, cheap clothing is having a catastrophic effect on our planet. Instead, utilise what’s already in your wardrobe or go to some of the many wonderful vintage and pre-loved clothing shops in our county. Seek out inspiration online or in store on how to style these items. So much better for your bank balance! Buy quality over quantity and classics that will last rather than a ‘wear once’ outfit. Clearing out your wardrobe can be so therapeutic, especially after Christmas, but don’t forget to give unwanted items to charity or recycle them, passing on the joy instead of filling up the landfill. Learn to relax, find the peace within and banish stress on this eight week guided course. After the first couple of weeks you will notice a change in your mood, or in the words of Jean, one of Pedja’s students, “Meditation helped me to become more aware of myself, with the added benefit of calmness as well.” You will develop three levels of meditation:

1 The Art of Relaxation 2 The Art of Cultivation 3 The Art of Letting Go Most importantly, learn how to integrate the newly discovered sense of calm, balance and ease into your daily life. Pedja’s students from previous meditation courses say: “The benefits were to recognise when stress was rising and giving me the wherewithal to deal with that in an effective way. Pedja is a great teacher, with a calm and quiet manner, perfect for the task in hand.” Kevin “Pedja’s classes were always student focussed.” Jackie

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

Lisa de Silva discovers how to enjoy mental wellbeing in the workplace and the huge benefits this has not only to the business, but to the individual as well

W

WORK HAPPY, Be Happy

ith many British workers feeling stressed, overworked and overtired, it has never been more important to safeguard our mental health and wellbeing within the workplace. In 201617, research by the Health and Safety Executive revealed that over 500,000 British workers suffered from workrelated stress, depression or anxiety, resulting in the loss of 12.5 million working days. Clearly, there is not just a personal cost involved in workplace stress, but also a business cost in terms of absenteeism and unproductivity, both of which impact on profitability. Working long hours under sustained pressure, skipping lunch breaks and not taking annual leave will inevitably result in stress and burnout. What’s more, it reduces your ability to be productive, creative and motivated, but the good news is that there are measures you can take to improve your mental wellbeing at work. If you are struggling with your workload, talk to your manager about delegating work to others, extending deadlines or having extra training. You can also encourage the company to appoint Mental Health First Aiders to support those struggling with issues, such as bullying and talk to your company about the possibility of flexible working. Flexible working has been proven to keep staff motivated,

healthier and greatly improve mental wellbeing and since 2014, all employees that have worked at a company for at least 26 weeks have the right for one ‘flexibility request’ per year. Most importantly, do work sensible hours and take regular breaks. We all know that our digital devices need to be recharged, well so do we. If you feel stressed during the working day take a break for a cup of tea, listen to a favourite piece of music, talk to a colleague or go for a short walk. Do take your full lunch hour and if possible, use this time for relaxing and socialising, by organising a group activity like taking a walk or starting a book or a craft club. It can also help to improve your working environment, so declutter your workspace, get a plant and decorate with personal photographs or pictures. It is important to keep a clear delineation between work and home life. At the end of each day write a To Do List and leave these tasks at work ready for the morning. Try to use your commuting time to unwind and when you get home change your clothes, do not check work emails, turn off all digital devices at least two hours before bedtime and try to prioritise exercise, good food and sleep, all of which will boost your mental wellbeing. By taking steps to ensure you stay recharged and refreshed, it is possible that work becomes a source of healthy mental wellbeing and less of a stress. l

anuary sales can be overwhelming at the best of times. At the worst they can be panic inducing unholy experiences. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Go in prepared and calm and you should hopefully come away with proper bargains that you actually want, not just tempting tat. Have a good think before you hit the high street. What is it you really need? Do your research before you go and even make a list. This will help you stay calm and focused and hopefully make the experience an enjoyable one. Try to use the sales to your advantage and invest in things you otherwise really couldn’t afford. Fast fashions come and go at the drop of a hat but key pieces, wardrobe staples if you will, are worth investing in and if you can get them in the sales even better. Sounds a little over organised but think ahead to next year; will you need a new coat by then? Boots or shoes? Or even Christmas presents! If you can’t think that far ahead you could get a head start with just buying gift wrap, ribbons and cards. Just remember you bought it already when next year rolls around! If you can shop early or late in the day as you are more likely to find ordered rails and space to browse, avoid the peak rush at all costs. And don’t forget to dress the part. ctivewear is now a firm fixture on the fashion map and despite its humble, rather pedestrian beginnings, is now a legitimate clothing genre with a billion-dollar market globally. Things have certainly moved on from the days of throwing on a faded old t-shirt and joggers to go out for a run or exercising in boring leggings and a shapeless top. We now have ever more stylish, sophisticated and comfortable offerings from both high street outlets and designers alike. Read on to discover the best activewear trends for 2019.

STAY WELL THIS WINTER It is important to keep warm in winter – both inside and outdoors as it can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems, such as heart attacks, strokes pneumonia and depression.

Don’t forget that those aged 65 and over, those with long-term health conditions, as well as pregnant women and children aged 2 and 3 are all entitled to a free winter flu jab. Speak to your GP or pharmacist for details.

If you have a long-term health condition like COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, diabetes, heart or kidney disease, or have suffered a stroke; cold weather can make health problems like these much worse. If you start to feel unwell, at the first signs of winter respiratory illness, even if it’s just a cough or cold, get advice from your pharmacist, before it gets more serious.

Older neighbours, relatives, friends and other elderly members of the community are more vulnerable in the winter months and may need a bit of extra help this winter. So make sure you keep in touch, check if they are feeling under the weather, help them stock up on food supplies and make sure they have the necessary medication before a spell of bad weather to help them Stay Well This Winter.

HEALTH HUB

HEART

HEALTH This month in health hub we have the eminent cardiologist Professor Douglas Chamberlain explain heart conditions and how to treat them

T

he term ‘heart attack’ is in common use but has no specific meaning, other than that of an abrupt serious medical emergency relating to the heart. In most cases the event is one in which the blood supply to the heart, delivered in channels called coronary arteries, is either interrupted or suddenly becomes seriously inadequate. Typically, this causes chest pain that can be severe and can last one or more hours. Heart pain does not start instantly but builds up over seconds and minutes. Muscular chest wall pain that may follow awkward movement causes discomfort

or pain that is usually at its worst in the first second; knowing this distinction can be reassuring! We should also consider angina of effort: chest pain or discomfort that occurs during exertion, and may limit activity over long periods

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are very easy to use and require no training because once opened they speak and tell you what to do of time. It has an underlying pathology usually similar to that of a heart attack, but causes symptoms only when the heart is stressed by the need to pump more blood. In most cases, the cause of the inadequate blood supply is a buildup of fatty material (called atheroma) that narrows the passageway for flow. A heart attack may then occur if blood clots at the site where the lining

has been rendered abnormal by this process. Atheroma develops over years; the resulting symptoms or events tend, therefore, to occur in older age-groups. There are exceptions: people who are diabetic, who have high blood pressure, abnormal metabolism involving cholesterol, who are overweight, or who smoke may have onset at appreciably earlier ages. Another much rarer cause in younger people can occur in women towards the end of pregnancy or in the few months after a birth. This is due to a sudden tear that occurs in the wall of one of the coronary arteries. Heart attack can also refer to an unexpected cessation of effective pumping of the heart without any external cause that is called ‘sudden cardiac death’. Some who have suffered this way are resuscitated very rapidly leaving memory intact, so they have been able to describe what they felt at the time. Warning pain may indeed have occurred but no action has been taken, but in others pain is not a feature. Symptoms then are of light-headedness often described as dizziness, with loss of vision followed within a matter of seconds by loss of hearing and all sensation. Most sudden cardiac arrests are a result of the heart developing a malignant rhythm called ventricular fibrillation: its activity becomes totally uncoordinated and therefore ineffective, gradually fading to total inactivity over a few minutes. Sudden cessation of activity may also occur though this is rare. Ventricular fibrillation is treatable by devices called defibrillators, and usually with a good outcome if they are applied within a few minutes; moreover, the time can be extended several-fold if the victim is given chest compressions (hands on the centre of the chest and push hard rhythmically at about 100 per minute, with any attempt better than none). Defibrillators are now small devices called Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Take note: they are very easy to use and require no training because once opened they speak and tell you what to do, repeated at each stage until you follow the simple instructions that they give. And incredibly, they can never do any harm to victim or user! Many AEDs are now in public places as many readers will know. For example, at least one has been placed on every railway station by Sussex Heart Charity and many local charities have purchased their own devices. They are also prominent in airports where many lives have been saved. Ventricular fibrillation can occur in apparently healthy people. You have nothing to fear in treating them. Success is not always possible but we should all be prepared to try! l sussexheartcharity.org

BLOOMING TIMES

THINK

Houseplants Post-Christmas gloom? Brighten up your home with houseplants, says Flo Whitaker

N

ow is the perfect time to rescue those neglected houseplants that you pushed into dark corners during the Christmas upheaval. January brings a welcome increase in daylight hours which will trigger plants into growth - but they cannot flourish with dusty foliage. Plants with large, shiny leaves can be washed using cotton wool balls dipped in cool water. Support each leaf underneath with one hand while using the other to gently wipe the leaf surface. Smaller-leaved plants will enjoy a lukewarm shower. Secure the pot tightly inside a plastic bag to prevent water flooding the compost, stand the plant under the gentlest shower setting for a minute, then allow to ‘drip dry’. Furry-leaved plants hate getting their foliage wet - water droplets become trapped in the hairs, causing leaves to rot. They can be gently cleaned using a soft brush, (a cosmetic blusher-type brush is ideal.) Most of our houseplants hail from tropical climes and take a rest during winter. Don’t be tempted to repot or feed them until they are in full, active growth in March-April. Houseplant problems can often be attributed to the wrong location. A windowsill that was warm and sunny in July may be cool and shady in November, so take note of the seasons and move your plants around to suit their needs. They can suffer badly from fluctuating temperatures, especially in winter. Plants trapped behind closed curtains have to contend with chilly glass that becomes even colder when

the central heating goes off - remove plants from your windowsills before drawing the curtains! Sun-worshippers such as Musa, (banana), Aloe, Pelargonium and Kalenchoe enjoy a brightly-lit location in full sunshine, whereas Begonia rex, African Violet,

Aspidistra isn’t known as the ‘Cast Iron Plant’ for nothing and will survive in places where other plants fail Monstera, (Cheese plant) and the majority of the fern family are shadier characters who thrive when positioned away from intense light. Say ‘cacti’ and we immediately think of scorching heat, but deserts can be severely cold places. Some cacti and succulents will happily overwinter in a cool porch or conservatory, so long as the temperature doesn’t drop below 5°C. Draughty hallways and landings are challenging environments for plants. Asplenium, with its thick, waxy fronds will probably cope, as will the

Asparagus fern, along with almostindestructible ivies that usefully come in many varieties with different leaf shapes and colours. The handsome Aspidistra isn’t known as the ‘Cast Iron Plant’ for nothing and will survive in places where other plants fail. Once an essential feature in Victorian parlours, they positively thrived in the noxious air caused by coal fires and gas lamps. However, be warned; Aspidistra owners are in it for the long haul. Spectacularly long-lived, some plants have been bequeathed in wills. It’s the horticultural equivalent of inheriting a parrot or tortoise - your Aspidistra will probably outlive you! l

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Are you sitting

COMFORTABLY? Then we’ll begin…

While you may be aware of Fine Furnishings based in the village of Lindfield, you may not be aware of just how much this furniture and bed retailer differs from those found on the High Street, says Lisa de Silva

B

uying a new sofa or bed is a major purchase that we don’t tend to make very often, so when we do, it’s important to get it right. Yet, it can often become a disheartening process. Have you ever found yourself wandering around showrooms, wondering what the difference is between various pieces of furniture and why some are so much more expensive than others? Even if you manage to find someone to help you, they often can’t answer your questions properly or supply you with exactly what you want.

Well, this scenario could not be further from the experience you’ll find at Fine Furnishings. With over 25 years of experience and expertise, this local family business offers tailormade advice, alongside tailor-made sofas, chairs and footstools to meet your individual needs. They also offer a complete reupholstery service. “We offer something very different from what you find on the High Street,” explains owner Andy Walters when I meet him at the company’s workshop and showroom in Lindfield. “Because

we manufacture and sell our furniture direct to the public, the customer can ask us to change a sofa’s length or legs, adjust the seat height or depth, or anything in fact, to make the sofa exactly what they want.” So, while the showroom has a large selection of sofas and chairs on display, these tend to act as templates for customers to create their own design, which is then handmade by a framemaker, the four upholsterers and the machinist in the workshop. If a sofa or chair is too big or too small, too low or too high, too narrow or too

40 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2019

13/12/2018 14:20

We can change a sofa’s length or legs, adjust the seat height or depth, or anything in fact, to make the sofa exactly what the customer wants

wide or has the wrong legs or arms, Fine Furnishings will make it to your exact requirements. As comfort is paramount when relaxing at home, they will also take the time to explain and demonstrate the difference between the six various cushion fillings available, so you get what’s right for you. “There’s no point having feather cushions,” Andy tells me, “unless you’re prepared to plump them up every day. If you want the look and feel of feathers, but not the work, you’ll be better off with a feather mix. Equally, someone who suffers with allergies will need to think about having a microfibre filling.” Unlike the High Street, there is nothing mass-produced about this company and Fine Furnishings prides itself on taking a personal approach with each customer. If, for example, there is any concern that the furniture may

not fit through your doors, they will come out and do a visual inspection. If it won’t fit, the sofa can be made in two halves, or with detachable arms and then assembled when it’s in place. Once you’ve ordered your sofa or chair, you then have around eight weeks to choose the fabric. With between 25–30,000 designs to choose from, this can take time. Customers are welcome to take home pattern books or call in and browse through the selection over a coffee. When they have an idea of what they might like, Andy orders a large sample of the fabric, delivered free of charge to their home, so that they can live with it for a few days and see whether or not it’s going to be right. “I’d never expect someone to choose a fabric from the swatches in pattern books. It’s such an important decision and it needs to be right,” explains Andy. “It’s also really nice when customers call in, for them to see their actual furniture being made downstairs in the workshop. Some people like to bring in cameras, so they have a photographic record of the work in progress.” As well as manufacturing new furniture, Fine Furnishings also offer a re-upholstery service, which can give your existing pieces a new lease of life. Whether it’s repairing old furniture, replacing cushion fillings or recovering an existing suite, Andy and the team can rise to any challenge. “Lots of our customers wonder why we don’t have a shop,” Andy tells me, “but it’s how we keep our prices competitive with the High Street. By making and selling the furniture on the same site we have none of the overheads of big retailers and can keep our costs and prices down, without compromising on quality.” The company also stocks the largest range of Harrison Spinks beds in Mid Sussex. Harrison Spinks have been making beds since 1840 using 100% natural fillings. “I’ve sold beds for over 30 years and probably know more about them than their Head Office,” laughs Andy. If you’ve ever felt confused or bewildered when trying to choose a new bed, you’re not alone, and Andy has perfected a three-minute bed lesson to help people understand why one bed might be better for them than another. Again, it’s a personal approach, helping the customer to understand the various benefits of each type of bed and mattress in relation to their individual needs. As with the furniture, prices

Glowing lights make the Mill a welcoming sight - especially on chilly winter days

AT HOME WITH... THE OWNERS: Jeni and Stuart Jebb and their Lakeland Terrier, Mabel THE PROPERTY: A Devon Mill dating back to the early 19th century, with an adjoining 15th century cob cottage

Jeni Jebb recalls feeling at home the moment she and husband Stuart stepped into the large kitchen of the millhouse they’d gone to view back in the spring of 2011: “The units were painted exactly the same shade as the ones in my existing kitchen, and even the tablecloth was the same as one I already owned,” she laughs. “I said to Stuart, ‘This is definitely meant to be!’.” And indeed, as they continued their tour of the characterful Devonshire mill and adjoining cottage tucked deep in a wooded valley in the

South Hams, they felt, finally, that this property was what they’d long been searching for. “For 30 years, we’d lived in a lovely medieval farmhouse near Guildford, but once our two daughters Sophie (26), and Amy (28) flew the nest, we decided the time was right to do something completely different – and move to an area we’ve always loved,” she explains. Despite their enthusiasm, it proved easier said than done. While their priority was to find somewhere that would suit the two of them, they also wanted to create a retreat for visiting family and friends. But properties that met their criteria – a home with a layout that would give both them and their guests privacy and space – seemed few and far between. “We decided to instruct a professional property-finding company,” says Stuart. “It might perhaps seem an expensive option, but it proved absolutely worth it.”

Not only did the south west country house finder sort the wheat from the chaff, meaning the couple didn’t make fruitless trips to view unsuitable properties, the company’s expert knowledge of the local market meant they were ahead of other buyers and well placed to assess value and negotiate where necessary on Jeni and Stuart’s behalf, saving them considerable time, stress and worry. “When the company called to tell us about an old millhouse that had been on the market for a while, we were hopeful,” says Jeni. “We loved its situation, and the size sounded perfect. We went down that weekend with fingers crossed.” The couple were also intrigued by the property’s considerable history: records show a mill has been on this site next to a farm mentioned in the Domesday book, and is powered by water from the stream that runs along one side of the valley. While it’s thought this particular mill building was constructed some 200 years ago, the adjoining cob cottage – which once housed the miller and his family – dates back to at least the 15th century. It operated as a working mill until just before the Second World War; then the area was commandeered by American troops, evacuated,

and the building used to accommodate soldiers. The fortunes of the mill were to change forever when during the war a line of bombs were dropped along the valley, destroying the leat (the manmade channel which diverted the stream water to the mill) effectively removing the supply. Not surprisingly, then, that after the war, the mill was used for nothing more than storage for the neighbouring farm’s machinery and supplies, a state of affairs that continued until the early nineties, when new owners took on the considerable task of converting the mill into living accommodation. They also linked it to the

cottage via an intriguing labyrinth of passages and staircases which knit the two buildings together. Jeni and Stuart were not only charmed by the building’s provenance, but the layout, particularly the fact that there were four bedrooms on the cottage side (“perfect for guests!”), and three within the mill building, reinforced their conviction that here, at last, was the property they’d been looking for. Within six months, Keynedon Mill was theirs. While the property was generally in good condition, most of the rooms needed updating. “We loved all the original features, but really wanted to introduce a feeling of light and space,” Jeni explains. Stuart got stuck in without delay, redecorating rooms and corridors in soft, neutral shades, installing contemporary bathrooms and updating the basic heating system with ecofriendly wood-burning stoves. Meanwhile, Jeni, who had worked in the interiors industry for many years, thought how best to incorporate much of their existing furniture – an easy mix of family heirlooms and classic furnishings – into their new home. Not least, she wanted to make good use of the numerous collections of antique linens, tableware, and charming finds, from vintage signs to kitchenalia she’s amassed over the years. “We were so lucky that almost everything we already

had looked completely at home at the Mill,” she says. “Although we had to invest in a few new pieces, generally it meant we were able to make each of the rooms comfortable and homely as soon as they’d been redecorated.” Jeni goes on to say, “Having the space for our two lovely grown-up daughters, family and friends to stay for wonderful weekends really makes this house a home, and being surrounded by all our special treasures which we’ve collected over the years.” Indeed, within seven months of moving in, the couple were more than settled in their new home and able to welcome a constant stream of friends and family who frequently gather for relaxed weekends. This summer, their daughter Sophie’s wedding was even held in the lovely gardens. “What we love most about living here,” says Jeni, “is the unspoiled beauty of the South Hams, the calmer pace of life, and all the local people who have made us so welcome. New Year, New Start what a a New Year brings for some relationships. Kristy Underwood, Underwood,Associate AssociateatatBuss BussMurton MurtonLaw LawLLP LLPexplains explains what New Year brings for some relationships.

Often, particularly where there are issues in relation to children and finances, people take some time to finally decide to separate. Even once they have made the decision, they may have no idea what to do next. Many are scared about the future and some may feel guilty at being the person who has chosen to end the relationship. So what should they do? The first step is to get some information about what to expect in a divorce or separation. We know that people can be concerned about getting lawyers involved, but at Buss Murton, we are members of Resolution (the

organisation of family lawyers) and are committed to dealing with matters in a constructive and nonconfrontational way. Often clients are anxious that matters will inevitably lead to court proceedings, but in reality, only rarely do cases ever reach a final court hearing as the vast majority settle by agreement at a much earlier stage. We support our clients through the process, to ensure that matters are dealt with as efficiently, cost effectively and painlessly as possible.

At Buss Murton Law LLP we offer a free 30 minute meeting, without obligation, where we talk clients through what to expect from the process of divorce or separation and give an indication as to costs. arrangeaameeting, meeting please please To arrange contact our East Grinstead contact our team secretary, office on 01342 Khaila Reid328 on T:000 01892 502 335 or E: KReid@bussmurton.co.uk and quote “Sussex Living Magazine”

LEGAL MATTERS

A New

Chapter At a difficult time of life, such as when you are facing a divorce, you want as much support as possible. Lisa de Silva covers some of the options here to make it as easy as possible for you and your family

A

ccording to official statistics 42% of all marriages end in divorce. The impact on those involved in terms of the emotional heartache and financial burden can be traumatic, but recent years have seen developments in the legal world to help ease the process. What’s more, there is now a trend for celebrating this life-changing event with a divorce party, to shift emotions of loss and failure to those of rebirth and renewal. Here we take a look at the different legal processes and options available when a relationship breaks down, along with looking at ways to navigate the emotional landscape of divorce. GROUNDS FOR DIVORCE Under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 (England and Wales), anyone seeking a divorce must prove that a partner is at fault through adultery, desertion or unreasonable behaviour. Alternatively, if both parties agree, a divorce can be granted after two years of separation. If there is no consent from either party or no evidence of fault, a couple have to have lived apart

for five years in order to divorce. These legal requirements can make a divorce a lengthy process and needlessly acrimonious with the need to appoint blame. Currently, the government is preparing to launch a public debate on proposals to modernise the divorce laws with a ‘no

fault’ option. If this is passed into law, it would mean that the sole grounds for divorce will be the ‘irretrievable breakdown of a marriage,’ making the process less confrontational and much quicker to process. THE IMPORTANCE OF PROFESSIONAL ADVICE & EXPERTISE Negotiating the legal language and processes of divorce can be challenging, particularly at a time of enormous emotional upheaval and the support, expertise and experience of a legal

The government is preparing to modernise the divorce laws with a ‘no fault’ option professional cannot be underestimated. Many family law solicitors offer an initial consultation for a fixed fee, which will help you to understand how the grounds for divorce and issues relating to children and finances apply to January 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 63

transparent in order to achieve a fair outcome as quickly and cost-effectively as possible without costly court proceedings. Divorcing couples can now choose from a wide range of options which include:

your specific circumstances. Splitting up property, pensions and assets can be a minefield and professional legal advice allows you to make an informed decision as to how to proceed. For those who decide to forgo professional help and opt for a DIY divorce, there are two major risks: firstly, if one partner feels hurt and hard done by during the process it can lead to a contested divorce, which is a

Negotiating the legal language and processes of divorce can be challenging hugely expensive and long drawn out procedure; secondly, it is important to understand that a decree nisi simply dissolves a marriage, it does not cover financial arrangements and without a separate legally binding consent order covering finances, both parties can be vulnerable to a future claim on their property, pensions and assets. THE LEGAL PROCESSES OF DIVORCE In recent years the legal system has recognised the damaging emotional and financial impact of divorce and has introduced a number of new resolution services in an attempt to minimise the effects of divorcing on couples and families. The aim is to try to make divorce more collaborative, open and 64 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2019

DIY DIVORCE A DIY divorce is where both parties negotiate their own agreement before instructing a solicitor to make what has been decided legally binding. While this may seem the most cost-effective way of divorcing, without the help of a legal professional to alert you to your rights and the full implications of your agreement, things can go wrong. If this results in a contested divorce it could end up being a very costly option. MEDIATION In this scenario a couple appoints an independent and impartial mediator trained to resolve issues raised by divorce such as childcare arrangements and the division of property, pensions and assets. Often mediators are trained solicitors and so have the legal expertise to ensure a fair outcome for both parties. Once agreements have been reached, the mediator prepares a Memorandum of Understanding which is taken to a solicitor to be made legally binding. This

reduces solicitor costs and can help to make the process less acrimonious. COLLABORATIVE PRACTISE This aims to resolve issues face to face with the couple and their respective lawyers sitting down together to settle any issues and reach an agreement. There is no need for lengthy rounds of legal correspondence or for costly court proceedings. ARBITRATION Family arbitration is a quicker and cheaper option than going to court. An arbitrator is appointed by a couple to hear both party’s case and make a decision based on the evidence. It can be used for just one issue if necessary, for example if you agree about everything aside from pension rights, arbitration can be used to resolve the issue. LAW COURT DIVORCE Both parties appoint a lawyer and communication is exclusively through legal channels, before court proceedings in which a judge will make the final decision on what is a fair outcome in terms of childcare and the splitting of property, pensions and assets. Needless to say, this type of divorce is extremely expensive and usually involves a lengthy timescale.

One of the most important things at this time is to find a way to support yourself

COPING WITH THE EMOTIONAL COST OF DIVORCE Nobody goes into a marriage expecting it to result in divorce, but inevitably some relationships break down. When this occurs, there will be a sense of loss, failure, hurt and possibly guilt to contend with. For those with children, negotiating this complex maze of emotions can be especially challenging. One of the most important things at this time is to find a way to support yourself. Find a friend or counsellor you can offload to and try to find a relaxing and distracting activity you can use to give your mind and emotions a break from the turmoil. This could be a form of exercise, tackling a puzzle or crossword or cooking yourself something nutritious. You will feel emotional so do let yourself cry and rage to release some of the tension. It’s also important to get enough sleep, which can be difficult given the circumstances and in some cases a meditation tape or some relaxing music may help. The popularity of Divorce and Separation Retreats is growing and a weekend workshop offering legal, financial and emotional support could help you in moving on. RESPECTFUL DIVORCE If you require advice about divorce, Lisa de Silva discovered how family law solicitors Tisshaws can guide you through as amicably as possible

W

hile many marriages end in divorce, it is possible to resolve issues and end the relationship in a respectable and cordial way. Family law solicitors, Tisshaws are all too aware of the stress that can accompany divorce and recommend that those beginning the process seek professional legal advice to help minimise the trauma and ensure the best outcome for all involved. “We always encourage people to get legal advice because it helps people to understand how divorce law relates to their specific circumstances,” explains Senior Associate Solicitor, Verity EunsonHickey. “Armed with that knowledge, they can make informed decisions about the best way to proceed.” Tisshaws offer a one-hour consultation for £50 (including VAT) where you can discuss how the law applies to your personal situation, as well as learning about new less confrontational ways of ending a marriage, such as mediation, collaborative practise and arbitration. “After the consultation there is no pressure to appoint us as your solicitor, but it is vital to get the right information at the initial stages, particularly if you decide to opt for a DIY divorce. We often see cases where someone has attempted this only for it to go wrong, which can end up being expensive,” says Verity. A consultation is also essential to ensure you understand how the grounds for divorce relate specifically to your marriage. In a recent high-profile divorce case, Owens v Owens, the judge was unable to grant Mrs Owens the divorce she petitioned for because

her particulars did not constitute strong enough grounds for divorce. “The danger in filing a DIY divorce petition is that the particulars are either not strong enough grounds to grant a divorce as in the case of Mrs Owens or

A consultation is essential to ensure you understand how the grounds for divorce relate specifically to your marriage

are too strongly worded, which risks offending your ex-partner and can lead to an expensive and lengthy contested divorce,” Verity confides. The Owens v Owens case highlighted the need for a ‘no fault’ divorce process (currently under debate by the government), where the only grounds for divorce is the irretrievable breakdown of a marriage. “Everyone here is a member of Resolution which has been campaigning for a number of years to bring in a ‘no fault’ divorce. Without the need to apportion blame, we believe it will make the process as amicable as possible,” says Verity. Professional legal advice can also protect you financially from any future claim on your assets from an ex-partner. “A decree absolute only ends the marriage. The financial aspects of the divorce are not legally binding without a separate Consent Order. Without this, both parties are vulnerable to future claims on their finances irrespective of how long ago the marriage ended,” Verity explains. So, if you would benefit from professional family and divorce law advice, do contact Tisshaws to arrange a one-hour consultation. l Tisshaws Family Law Solicitors 3 Hazelgrove Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex RH16 3PH 01444 472700 info@tisshawssolicitors.co.uk www.tisshawssolicitors.co.uk

can offer a similar service. Divorce is a major life event and there is a growing trend to support this landmark occasion with a Divorce Party. Ultimately, many people divorce for positive reasons and a party is a chance to celebrate this time of rebirth with friends and family and can help you to look forward. HELPING CHILDREN THROUGH DIVORCE Divorce can be a traumatic event for children and however hard it might be, it’s important to talk to children about your ex-partner in a neutral way so they do not feel they have to take sides. Reassure them that what has happened is not their fault and that both of you will continue to love and care for them. Think about what is appropriate for the children to know and when explaining what has happened try to be as factual as possible and use ageappropriate language. For example, if an affair is involved, describe it as a close friendship. It’s also important to encourage children to talk about how they are feeling and to give them as much continuity as possible, so do try to keep to daily routines. Possibly the most important factor is keeping a ‘functional friendship’ with your ex-partner to allow you to successfully co-parent together based

and your partner maintaining a good relationship and can need adjusting if new partners come onto the scene. While there’s no doubt that divorce is a stressful and challenging time in anyone’s life, maintaining respect and consideration for your ex-partner represents the best way of minimising the damage and being able to move on in a positive way. l

on shared values and boundaries. Bird’s Nest Parenting can work for some, where children stay in the family home and parents take it in turns to stay with them, while the other one lives in a flat nearby. This is less disruptive for children and can be cost-effective as only one property needs to be big enough for your offspring. However, this relies on you

BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest LONESOME BOG AND LITTLE DOG

The bog is personified as a sprite creature, who is just as lonely as the stray dog

by Iona Tulloch and Harry Woodgate (Little Forest Publishing) This is a picture book for preschool children, and can be read by slightly older ones. The illustrations are scribbly and fun, with little snippets of newspaper text inserted as part of the pictures, giving them a collage effect. The bog is personified as a sort of sprite creature, who is just as lonely as the little stray dog who runs away from persecution by other local canines, and finds himself there where he knows he won’t be followed. This is because the bog has a bad

FAR HORIZONS

by Frank Gardner (Bantam) Frank Gardner will be known to many people as the wheelchair-bound security correspondent for the BBC. He has always had the urge to travel, and this book charts some of his journeys from his gap year, student days, and territorial army trips. In 2004 he was shot six times and survived, although his cameraman, Simon Cumbers,

reputation; misty and muddy, and things get lost there – but the bog sprite shows him all the wonderful plants and animals that live in and around it. Eventually the dog asks to know the way out. The lonesome bog is very upset, but shows him the way. It all ends happily. The little dog persuades all the local dogs and their owners to follow him to the bog, and shows them the beetles, butterflies, dragonflies, frogs and birds. My only criticism is the use of bored of, rather than bored with.

was killed. He was left partially paralysed, but has shown little interest in curtailing his activities, as he has since managed a birdwatching trip to Papua New Guinea, surely one of the most inhospitable destinations possible! I had been to many of the places he mentions, and consequently found a lot of the information was well known to me. I did think some of the things he did were foolhardy, but then I was no better when I was in my teens. Gardner writes well, and there’s a lot of local colour and attention to detail. However, I found the account of his injuries and recovery rather sparse, but this may be because it’s dealt with more fully in his earlier book, Blood and Sand. An absorbing read, and illustrated with some of Gardner’s own photographs and sketches.

THE COWS

Dawn O’Porter (Harper Collins) Although this book is ostensibly light reading about three women in their thirties, it’s really about the power of social media and the devastating effect one brief clip on YouTube can have on someone’s life. Tara is a single mother, working in the media, who does one stupid thing that is videoed by a stranger on a train. Cam is a popular blogger, confident on a computer but far less so in real life. She is one of the very few people who stands up for Tara online. Stella is a twin whose sister has died. She was the unpopular one, and has medical issues that making having a baby rather urgent. Unfortunately there’s no prospective father in view,

Tara is a single mother, who does one stupid thing that is videoed by a stranger and she resorts to fakery to get one. Eventually all three women’s lives interlink, but there is a shock ending that I didn’t see coming at all. None of the characters are perfect, and sympathising with them is hard at times – but isn’t that real life? The beginning of the book is a little confusing as the viewpoints of the different people change rapidly, but once you’ve got the hang of the characters it’s easier to read. I read it on holiday, which is probably the best way! January 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 69

COMMUNITY

S

ometimes blessings come in disguise. This was certainly the case for the Hurstpierpoint afternoon WI, which ceased to be at the end of 2018. Two of the newer members of the group, Dianne and Ann felt they could not just sit back and see the group disappear, so they got their heads together and created the Hurst Monthly Social Group. “I felt so sad that the ladies in the group, some of whom have been coming for 40 years, would not have their afternoon social anymore,” said Dianne when I met with her and Ann to discuss their new venture. They both feel that this sort of social group is vitally important to a community and makes it a much richer place, not only in terms of the social element for the members and creating a cohesive community, but also for the educational and interest aspect. Both Ann and Dianne want to emphasise that the new group is very much looking forward to accommodating both men and women and to that end they have planned a varied schedule of monthly speakers to cater for all interests. “At our inaugural meeting on the 6th February Mak Norman will be delighting us with a presentation on the Anglo Saxons in Sussex with a slide show, poetry, riddles, runes and examples of the Old English Language. Our second meeting on the 6th

PETS

It’s a Dog’s Life January can be a gloomy month for man and beast, but Rolo the Border Terrier is looking on the bright side of things

N

ow it’s got to be said that January isn’t my favourite month of the year. I don’t know why, but after Christmas, ‘Her Indoors’ usually gets fanciful ideas in the house cleansing department and this often extends to me. ‘Out with the old and in with the new’ seems to refer to bath water here, and Teddy, my apprentice, needs to watch out too. He wasn’t with us this time last year, but I reckon he could be in danger of a quick dunk in the baby

bath and a lathering up with tea tree oil shampoo. The smell lingers for days unless ‘Her Indoors’ is distracted and an opportunity for rolling in something occurs, although you do have to be a bit careful otherwise the whole process can repeat itself. The weather in January is usually rather grim too and whilst snow might be bad for people, it’s even

worse for small dogs with short legs. I don’t want to start the New Year with my assets frozen. Still, I’m a positive kind of dog so I’ve decided to think of all the things that I like about January and focus on those. First, has got to be the wood burner. I thought I was pretty good at lying as close as possible and soaking up the soothing rays. Teddy, however, is even better. He lies hard up against the brick edging around the fireplace and gently roasts. Occasionally he has to move to cool down or to get a refreshing drink in the kitchen, but otherwise he’s there, like a barnacle on a ship’s bottom. Then there’s home crafting. In the absence of gardening, ‘Her Indoors’ tends to be busy with inside projects. This can be a dubious blessing. I’ve never quite forgiven her for the handknitted coat that severely dented my street credibility for months a few years ago. This year however, she’s read something about arthritic senior dogs, such as myself, benefiting from a mattress made out of orthopaedic memory foam so she’s bought an offcut and is all set to make a cover out of something warm and fleecy – perfect. I wonder if she could rustle up a stair-lift and a chair that tips you out to save the effort. I just hope she doesn’t get any ideas about a walk-in bath….

Teddy lies hard up against the brick edging around the fireplace and gently roasts The other good thing about January is the food. I have a particular liking for home-made beef stew and I long ago established a routine claim to my own portion. The only problem is, beef stew takes a long time to cook and then ages to cool, so the anticipation is almost unbearable. And these days I have to share with the apprentice. Still, it’s not all bad. If Teds gets distracted or is a bit slow, I sneak in there, faster than you can say ‘clean bowl’, and get second helpings. If you snooze, you lose, in this household! As I said, it’s not all bad in January. l

rom the Beeding Hill car park take the footpath heading north, by the wooden post. Walk along the bottom of the gully as it drops away for around 200m after which five steps and a handrail appear on the right. Once up the steps and through the kissing gate, the line of the footpath rests like a shadow on the grass. Be aware of any livestock. About 100m into the field head for the yellow sign atop the fingerpost in the longer grass to the left. Beyond this, the path follows the contours of the landscape, occasionally lumpy and briefly wooded. Wander around the end of the valley towards the summit of the lime pit. “Keep clear of the edge, there’s no fence… the drop is almost vertical,” Lucy observed. Bear right at the fingerpost, then straight on at the next fingerpost, towards the stainless steel gate. Beyond the gate, the path goes uphill gently then arcs left around the end of the valley, under Tottington Mount, before trundling downhill. Down in the bowl

The land drops away steeply, between fences, through a rusted gate, past new fence posts. Near the bottom it passes a large fallen beech tree before ending at the road. Across the road, head between the barns of Tottington Manor Farm, before turning right and following the drive to the two houses. The drive degrades to a track, leading to a pair of wooden gates at the entrance to Longlands Wood. Walk through the woods for about 200m to the fingerpost, turning right then following the flat and sometimes squelchy path beneath the trees to the low-lying branch and stile at the edge of the woods. Once over the stile, hug the hedge on the left all the way to the pair of metal gates. Beyond these, walk across the next field, keeping the hedge on the left once again. Walk to the threeway fingerpost at the end of the field, turning left towards the gap in the hedge. Across the slippery sleeper footbridge, turn right into the adjacent field and walk past the pretty cottage. Across another slippery sleeper footbridge, keep the hedge on your right, to the end of the final field. Amble south along the track between the hedges towards the Downs. The path narrows shortly before it enters the driveway of Aburton Farm House, then approaches the gate and

green, stationary travelator. There’s no other option, except pacing it stepby-step, acclimatising to the altitude as the air thins! “The Downs look beautiful enveloped in the winter light,” commented Lucy as she paused to catch her breath. 300m later the gate and 154m (505 feet) summit of Edburton Hill is reached. Congratulations… but there’s more ascent to come. Turn right and follow the South Downs Way as it curves left, then right, before arriving at the top of Truleigh Hill at 216m (708 feet). “I’m truly, madly, deeply in love with the views,” chuckled Lucy as she paused to absorb the surroundings. Once past the radio transmitters, the track is flat. There’s a feeling of remoteness here, a small clustered community high on the hills. Beyond the Youth Hostel, the track passes through a glade of pine trees, hardens to tarmac, then rolls downhill for another mile, all the way to the car park. “A delightful winter walk and a great start to the year,” said Lucy as we went in search of some well-deserved tea and cake. l

PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU

A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.

CROSS CODE

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

That’s how much you, as a West Sussex resident, could expect to pay for your care in a residential or nursing care home. Choosing care for yourself, or supporting a family member to do so, is a lifechanging and important decision to take. It’s vital that you seek trusted independent specialist financial advice. Don’t leave it to chance that your finances will meet the cost of your care.

Ease the worry of paying for care The good news is that there is advice and support available to help you with this important financial decision. Carewise offers advice and guidance, so that you can choose the most cost-effective way of paying for your care. Carewise has an approved panel of care fees specialists who are all qualified independent financial advisers.

They will inform you of the available options and discuss products and services from across the whole market. Your first consultation with a care fees specialist is free, and they will explain the cost of any further advice. As part of this scheme, you can also access a free money advice service from Age UK West Sussex.

Take control of your finances It is now even simpler to arrange your FREE consultation with a care fees specialist with our new ‘request a call back’ service. Visit www.carewiseadvice.com where you will find a list of all the care fees specialists, choose the adviser you would like to talk to, and request a call back from them. You will then be contacted within one working day.

Rose’s story by a Carewise care fees specialist I first met 83-year-old Rose in 2005. She was in good mental and physical health, but she had lost confidence about living on her own and wanted to move into a care home. Once her house was sold, Rose had around £218,000 in available capital. Together, we

reviewed her income and expenditure, and worked out that she would have a shortfall of £16,410 per year in meeting the cost of her care home. I obtained quotes for an immediate care plan for Rose and recommended she purchase a plan where the payout would

increase by five per cent per year. This would help to cover future increases in care fees at the home. The income payments were paid to the care home, tax-free. Rose paid £85,925 for the plan. By 2009, Rose’s care plan had paid for itself. In 2013, the plan had paid out £155,257, which is £69,332 more than she paid for it. (This is a real case with the name of the customer changed.)

Recycling

RESOLUTION Planet plastic or plastic fantastic! The solution is in your hands… Emma Dawson explains how our recycling works and how we can all recycle better. It’s time for a New Years recycling resolution!

I

t’s easy to sometimes think that your recycling efforts don’t make much of a difference but if everyone in the UK recycled one aluminium deodorant aerosol enough energy would be saved to run a TV in over 151,000 homes for a year. A staggering 300,000 tonnes of card is used in UK households during the festive season, enough to wrap Big Ben almost 260,000 times so every item you recycle really can have a huge impact. Ever wondered what happens to your recycling once it leaves the confines of your home? We’re all being badgered to “recycle more” but what’s the point of it all? With the recent focus on plastic pollution and the mixed messages on recycling in the national press this article seeks to clear up confusion within our local community with a focus on Mid Sussex District. A PARTNERSHIP APPROACH Mid Sussex is one of seven District and Borough Councils within West

Sussex responsible for the collection of household waste and recycling. The Councils work closely together under the umbrella of the West Sussex

Waste Partnership. West Sussex County Council is the ‘Waste Disposal Authority’, responsible for the safe disposal of household waste collected by the District and Borough Councils. The County Council also provides Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRSs) where residents can deliver their household waste for recycling and disposal. All District and Borough Councils in the partnership collect the same materials in the same manner, using the same key messages, bin stickers and icons in order to minimise confusion to our residents. The only difference you will see across the county is the colour of the bin/lid! Alternate weekly household collections have been introduced in Mid Sussex with general waste collected one week and dry mixed recycling of plastics, glass, metal, foil, cartons, paper and card the other. Alex Donley, Contract Manager says, “Our residents can help collection crews by simple actions such as not overfilling the bin so the lid closes and placing the bin in a safe and accessible

DID YOU KNOW BLACK PLASTIC CAN BE RECYCLED IN WEST SUSSEX? Since April 2015 along with other Local Authorities in West Sussex, Mid Sussex has also collected plastic pots, kerbside location with handles facing the road.” We have just introduced a new fleet of refuse and recycling collection vehicles which provide improved operational performance and fuel efficiency. pedestrians and other road users. Kerbside recycling is collected and then taken to one of several transfer stations within West Sussex where the material is bulked up onto larger vehicles for transportation to our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Arundel reducing the number of vehicles on the road. The mixed recycling is then mechanically sorted and separated into individual material types, baled up and transported to reprocessors for manufacturing into new products.

CAN YOU REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE MORE? The majority of residents in Mid Sussex are recycling more and we want to say a big thank you for all you do, however with your help we can still recycle more… The West Sussex Waste Partnership have done some research and found that in West Sussex, just over 17% of what you put in your general waste bin could have been collected at the kerbside for recycling. That equates to 28, 110 tonnes – what a waste! This figure is even higher in Mid Sussex (19.3%) as highlighted in the bin breakdown picture. HOW YOU CAN HELP… #THINK BEFORE YOU THROW If the wrong items are put in your recycling bin, they risk damaging the MRF and could ruin the quality of the whole lorry load of recycling. This is why it is vital to recycle right by only putting the correct items in your recycling bin at home. Items such as plastic bags, hard plastics (e.g. toys, plant pots), textiles, polystyrene, shredded paper and paper towels or tissues cannot be recycled at the MRF. In Mid Sussex we are unable to empty blue lidded bins that contain these materials.

Recycling is collected and delivered to a special processing plant

Using the latest technology all material streams are separated

Recycling Process

Plastic elements are melted and treated to make new The recycled plastic is now materials used in the production of new products

The plastic back on the shelf for you to buy in as little as six weeks

All recycling should be • Clean (a quick rinse will do) • Dry (Keep your bin lid shut) • Loose (not in plastic bags) Mid Sussex residents can find lots more useful information on our website www.midsussex.gov.uk/wasterecycling or alternatively for county wide information visit www.recycleforwestsussex.org

Let’s work together this year to make a difference to the environment and to our local community as recycling more benefits the environment, using less energy and natural resources. l It would be great to share your recycling tips and resolutions, or if you have any recycling queries contact us @MSDCNews or email wastematters@midsussex.gov.uk
