ed, more customers are visiting the store from further afield and the Collingwood Batchellor brand has reaffirmed its presence among the Horsham community.

A new storefront, more space and better access were just a few of the ideas floating around when we made the decision to expand our Horsham store. And having been a prominent feature of Horsham’s Bishopric since 1997 and initially extended in 2008, it seemed like the perfect time to revitalize Horsham’s premier furniture store. Last year a total of £1 million was spent on the modern design that now stands tall amid the Bishopric – offering additional parking space, an eye-catching exterior and giving the local community a larger choice of furniture ranges and brands. At the time, Tom Collingwood described how the work was able to provide “30% more space,” and the whole management team were “extremely proud to reopen the store after what had been a huge upheaval and refurbishment.” And since then the store has gone from strength to strength; all signage around the store has been complet-

Since arriving in 1997. Collingwood Batchellor has slowly tailored the products in its Horsham store to match the needs and tastes of the local area. And with an increasing number of ranges becoming a popular hit among the Horsham audience, it soon became clear that the Sussex area wanted more from our brand. As a result, this formed one of the main drives behind increasing the store’s size by 3,500 square feet. With increased floor space and better lighting at the front of the store, we’ve been able to make the most of our larger product line and now we can really show the furniture off – and do each item justice by giving customers a better concept of how their furniture will look in their own homes.

by the local community. Even now the store’s management are receiving positive comments about the new storefront, which showcases the Collingwood Batchellor name in a fresh and contemporary way. But that’s not where it stops. Collingwood Batchellor are always looking for ways to improve the overall shopping experience and will continue to do so in the future. The directors are keen to invest more money in the Sussex shopping scene and are constantly striving to improve their existing stores, as well as add to the local communities around the county.

The store has now begun it’s Summer Sale with huge savings in all departments on top brands including Ekornes, Ercol, Parker Knoll, Hypnos Beds and many more. With a great selection of lighting and accessories there has never been a better reason to visit.

It’s now 9 months on from the reopening and Guy Collingwood has spoken of how we’ve had more customers than ever before – hopefully providing an indication that the investment has been well-received

Tour a Méridien

BIKE RIDE

With the Tour de France beginning on the 7th July, here’s Robert Veitch’s mini grand tour of the rolling landscape, north of the South Downs. But do you have the Va Va Froome to wear the maillot jaune?

G

rab your bike, helmet and drink, then join the route at the point that suits you best. We arrived by train at Plumpton Station, riding clockwise, crossing the Prime Meridian twice along the way. From the station, cycle north through Plumpton Green, gently uphill to the very end of Station Road. Turn right, heading southeast for almost one mile, before turning left into Honeypot Lane. Continue to the junction with the A275 in South Chailey one mile further on. Turn left remembering this is a main road. After ¾ mile turn right into Markstakes Lane, enjoying the quiet solitude that now accompanies the route. Passing Markstakes Farm on the left, the ride drifts from the western hemisphere into the eastern. It’s not marked, but is pleasing all the same. Shortly after, swing right on to Town Littleworth Road and cycle for almost another two miles, eventually reaching the gradual incline at the bottom of Deadmantree Hill. Turn left where the signpost indicates ‘Barcombe 1m’. ¾ mile further on, turn right at the fingerpost for Hamsey Road and after ½ mile bear right and south towards the Downs. Turn right at the

We named the climb ‘Le petit pic méridien’ next junction and continue south. The wooded crest of Mount Harry can be seen off to the right, a couple of miles distant as the crow flies. One mile further on, turn right where the fingerpost indicates Cooksbridge. The road is narrow and eases uphill. To honour its limited stature we named the climb ‘Le petit pic méridien!’ As the hedges fade away a rough lay-by appears on the left. The panorama is a little slice of heaven in good weather that’s well worth stopping for. Malling Hill, Cliffe Hill and the Glynde wind turbine are to the east with Mount Harry and Blackcap to the south. Eagle eyed riders will notice the Meridian marker on the right-hand side of the road. Pedalling from the eastern hemisphere, back to the western, follow the lane to the end, back to the A275.

Follow this road, along the foot of the Downs for a couple of miles or so, before turning right into Plumpton Lane, by a brown sign for the racecourse. From here, it’s two breezy miles back to Plumpton Station. Approaching the level crossing, the racecourse is on the left. child of sussex awards

Our Amazing

CHILDREN Returning for its 8th annual awards ceremony, The More Radio, Child of Sussex Awards is again celebrating the amazing achievements of children in Sussex. Sara Whatley tells us more

W

hat is our county’s most important asset? Our children, of course! Celebrating this in a glitzy black tie awards ceremony at the Brighton Hilton Metropole on 12th October 2018, The More Radio, Child of Sussex Awards is an event not to be missed. Children are our future, after all, so let’s celebrate them! This is a really special event and is always an emotional and uplifting celebration of the brilliant children we have in Sussex. Nick Osborne, More Radio breakfast presenter says, “This is the eighth year that we have held the awards, they are full of amazing and inspirational stories. Please help us to find this year’s winners by making a nomination today.” And it couldn’t be easier to do just that. If you think you have an amazing child, or know of a child who deserves to be recognised for something amazing they have done, all you have to do is visit www.childofsussex.co.uk and nominate them. The closing date for nominations is Friday 3rd August 2018. Kieran Davenport won the Courage Award in 2017. In chronic pain all day

and all night, Kieran’s joints dislocate or sublux all the time, with his record being 70 dislocations in 24 hours. At one point he was in such pain that showering took three days to recover from. However, Kieran didn’t let this hold him back. He persevered and

worked his way through it, managing against all odds to gain two A grades and a C in his GCSEs, keeping his incredible sense of humour and fun and even managing to be kind, caring and supportive to all his friends, some of whom are severely disabled. Kieran was attending 6th Form College, but due to his health problems he is now doing his A levels online. Another winner from the 2017 awards was Jessica Batchelor for the Community Award. Jessica witnessed the death of a friend’s mother at a netball match, who could potentially have been helped by a defibrillator. Since then Jessica has ceaselessly been campaigning for more public access defibrillators. As the Young Mayor for Seaford, Jessica was in a position to give speeches and approach local businesses to help raise money. She also used the UK Youth Parliament to spread the message to places further afield, as she

If you think you have an amazing child all you have to do to is visit www.childofsussex.co.uk and nominate them felt the cause was too important to just be kept local. The final piece of Jessica’s campaign fell into place following work experience with her local MP where Jessica wrote her own Bill – to get legislation that defibrillators have to be in schools, sports centres and other public places – which was accepted with no opposition in Parliament. These are just two out of the hundreds of incredible achievements made by the children of Sussex every year. The 2018 event looks set to be equally as wonderful, all that’s needed is your nominations. Sussex Living is proudly supporting the awards as a media partner, and we wish all the entries the best of luck. l July 2018 | SUSSEX LIVING 11

THE INTERVIEW

LONGEVITYGuru It may not be possible to live for ever, but 91-year-old Sam Almond from Eastbourne is certainly giving it his best shot. Peter d’Aguilar recently met with him to find out more

S

am believes passionately in living life to the full. Born in Manchester in 1926, he had to spend some of his childhood with an aunt in Ireland, after his mother contracted TB. It took seven years for her to recover and, as a consequence, she became a health and fitness fanatic - passing this passion on to her son. Sam was also a keen sportsman; playing cricket, football, tennis, swimming and, in particular, taking part in diving competitions. He was shortlisted for the 1948 British Olympic team in the 3 metre springboard section but had to forego the opportunity as there was no funding in those days. Sam’s lifelong philosophy is built around the twin principles of discipline and good habits, which were drilled into him during his formative years at a school run like a military academy by a former Indian Army major. After school, Sam read Architecture at University College, Manchester. By then WWII was in full spate so, aged 17, Sam joined the Air Force Cadets and volunteered, as many did, to become a fighter pilot. In December 1943, he went with fifty other volunteers for a tough three-day pilot medical and was one of only three to pass. As he was still too young for full service, he was sworn into the RAF and put on reserve. In April 1944, he took an honourable discharge and spent the next three years in the

At the age of 24 Sam decided to become an entrepreneur. First, he set up a shirt business in Warrington, grew it until he had 160 employees and sold it on at a healthy profit. He capitalised on this success by starting a leasing business, again selling it profitably. He then began importing honey from New Zealand, moved into commercial property and afterwards took a stake in an investment trust. This sparked an interest in finance that remains as strong today. Sam suffered two minor strokes in his early eighties and realised that

he needed to make some changes. “My cholesterol was too high,” says Sam. “So, I cut down on fat, sugar, salt, processed food and started eating a smaller evening meal. The most important ingredients for a long life are eating properly with lots of fruit and veg, drinking plenty of water and exercising both the body and the mind.” Sam gives motivational talks on lifestyle and believes in practising what he preaches. He is currently the UK 90 to 95 year group swimming champion, and will be defending his title this summer. “It is harder to keep in good mental and physical shape as you get older. Good habits and discipline are the key. Your health is the best investment you can make. Life is a wonderful opportunity – you have to make the most of it.” And if he makes it to 105 he will receive a large payout from a bookmaker on a wager he placed some fifteen years ago. l

ACTIVITIES

SUMMER

DAYS OUT

With the summer holidays upon us it’s time to get out and explore Sussex. Peter d’Aguilar has done all the leg work so all you have to do is read on, pick an activity and enjoy it!

W

e are fortunate that Sussex offers a huge variety of interesting, stimulating and entertaining places to visit. They don’t necessarily have to cost a fortune either – there are options for every budget and taste. Even if it rains, you can take your pick from a multitude of indoor attractions. This article aims to give a flavour of the myriad possibilities that exist right on our doorstep. Please see the websites in the ‘More Information’ section at the end of this feature for a comprehensive list.

COUNTRYSIDE

Sussex is one of the most beautiful and heavily wooded counties in England, with many miles of walking, horse riding, cycling and adventure play well away from the noise and hazards of busy roads. After a cobwebshedding excursion into the heart of the countryside along its network of

footpaths and bridleways, what could be more agreeable and well deserved than a picnic in a beauty spot or lunch in one of Sussex’s traditional country pubs? The High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, stretching through the heart of the county from Horsham to Hastings, is packed with interesting places to visit, outdoor activities and places to stay. The Ashdown Forest, home to Winnie The Pooh is a perfect place for enjoying the Sussex countryside on foot, horseback or bicycle.

Just a little further south is the South Downs National Park, with its rolling hills, bustling market towns and miles of breathtaking views. At its eastern extremity the Seven Sisters walk along the cliff tops and the beach at Birling Gap make an energetic and enjoyable summer outing. Even if you are city-based, all of the larger towns in Sussex have beautiful parks, ideal for lazing in the sunshine with a picnic or a book.

HERITAGE

The National Trust owns several immaculately preserved properties dotted throughout the county. You can take your pick from their range of impressive castles and country houses, each with its own intriguing history. Explore their magnificent formal gardens sculpted by some of Britain’s great landscape architects, set amongst acres of unspoilt countryside. As well as National Trust properties, Sussex also has a host of other historic

SEASIDE

If your ideal outing is a trip to the seaside, Sussex has miles of spectacular and award winning coastline stretching from Chichester in the west across to Rye in the east. The family-friendly beaches and resorts of Worthing, Bognor Regis,

Littlehampton and Eastbourne are perfect for pottering in the shallows, relaxing in a deckchair and strolling along the promenades and piers. As its name suggests, Camber Sands is perfect for sand castles. Bexhill is a cultural hotspot. Cooden is renown for kite flying and windsurfing. At Hastings you can explore the fishing harbour and further along the coast there’s the seaside chic of Brighton

WILDLIFE

Sussex has several animal rescue centres, many of which are open to the public and offer animals for adoption. You may end up going home with more than you bargained for. If your preference is for more exotic fauna, Sussex is blessed with several wellstocked zoos and aquariums. Whether you simply like the idea of seeing a working farm in action and

enjoy watching lambs gamboling, pigs rooting, ducks waddling and rabbits hopping, or you fancy some full-on physical activity, a farm visit can be a full day’s entertainment for all the family.

SHOPPING

If retail is your therapy of choice, the shopping centres in the main Sussex towns offer an impressive array of designer boutiques, antique shops, specialist jewellers and independent retailers, as well as all the mainstream chains. If you stray off the beaten track, you are likely to stumble upon more bohemian areas with colourful street traders and items for sale you never even knew existed. Further afield in the towns and villages spread across the county, you’ll find many intriguing and unusual shops selling everything from Sussex trugs to Swedish candlesticks and Indian bedspreads. Many town centres across Sussex play host to traditional markets, often on a weekly basis. Boot fairs are also great places to pick up pre-owned goods, local produce and products, home-ware, crafts and antiquities – a chance to find a bargain while supporting local traders.

ADVENTURE

As well as all things agricultural many farms have introduced exciting adventure trails, bushcraft courses and other themed activities. For those with a well-developed spirit of adventure there are numerous outlets for your excess adrenalin. Zip wires and high ropes, outdoor and indoor climbing, quad bikes and go karts, dry ski slopes, mountain biking, abseiling, watersports and hot air ballooning are just a few ideas to whet your appetite. For the energetic younger market there are soft play centres in most of the larger towns and family fun activities at farms and visitor attractions in the countryside. Several sports and leisure centres have swimming pools with flumes and wave machines, as well as a range of other indoor sports.

Slaugham Twinning Association

The ‘Slaugham Twinning Association’ was founded in 1974 after the village postmaster of Handcross went to France with the Horsted Keynes Twinning. It was quickly decided that we should form a similar alliance for our own Parish and our Association was formed with St Martin des Besaces, a small village in Normandy. We have now had over 44 years of regular visits to each other’s countries staying in our hosts homes and they in ours. It’s a marvellous way of getting to know how different cultures live. It has been a very interesting and entertaining journey and one that we hope will continue for many years to come. We really enjoy visits with our Twinned village and have built up many strong friendships over the years. Here in Slaugham (comprising the four villages of Warninglid, Slaugham, Pease Pottage and Handcross) we hold regular social events including: quizzes, wine tasting, silent auctions, progressive suppers and curry nights. Our events usually involve food and wine, so you can see we do have

a good time. Our next event will be a 5-mile country walk around Bolney followed by afternoon tea on Sunday 15th July. If you would like to know more about our association or perhaps come along on our walk, please contact Lesley Read lesleyread52@gmail.com, or call 07833 338911. We always welcome new people at our events and it’s a great way to make friends.

Stag Beetle Summer!

In July, wildlife charity People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) is asking for families, individuals or groups of friends in the UK to record sightings of stag beetles on six summer evenings, as part of an ongoing European study into these impressive, yet endangered beetles. Taking part in the European Stag Beetle Monitoring Network couldn’t be easier; all volunteers need to do is walk 500m, six times in July on warm, summer evenings, counting and recording any stag beetles they see. So whether you’re on your evening dog walk, a post-work

jog, popping to the shop or walking to your local pub, you can help! To take part please visit:www.stagbeetlemonitoring. org. PTES also wants members of the public to record any sightings directly to them via the Great Stag Hunt – an annual stag beetle survey PTES has been running for nearly 20 years, which saw over 6,000 records being submitted last year! To record a sighting, visit: www.ptes.org/gsh On top of these two surveys, anyone with a garden can help by making their green spaces a stag beetle haven. From creating a log pile, to leaving plenty of dead wood for stag beetles, there are lots of things gardeners can do to help!

Twineham Summer Fair

Twineham C. E. Primary School will be holding its fabulous summer fair this year on Saturday 7th July from 12-5pm. There will be some fantastic activities, including pony rides and a dog show, family shows, live music, stoolball and various crafts and games, plus a variety of food and drink will be on offer. Entry to the fair will be £3 for adults, £2 for children, capped at £10 per family. Under 3’s go free. The school is located in the village of Twineham, near Hickstead, Church Lane, RH17 5NR. The Singing Allsorts Charity Concert

On Wednesday 11th July at 7.30pm we will be holding our annual charity concert at Holy Trinity Church, Cuckfield. It is a fun evening with refreshments and raffle. The Singing Allsorts is an informal community choir based in West Sussex which was established in 2007 by Jane Haughton. It has a thriving membership of fifty women singers - soprano’s, second’s and alto’s. We meet weekly to sing a varied repertoire including African, Shaker, Broadway and Folk, in fact All Sorts! We always try to invite representatives of our charities to attend and speak to give some insight into their work. Our 2018 Charities are: Brighton Churches’ Winter Night Shelter for the Homeless. Coordinated by Youth with a Mission and run by volunteers, it offers a safe space, bed, hot meals, advice and support and is based nightly in various Brighton churches. Our other charity is Water Aid who work in 37 countries to assist poor communities who’ve no water. To establish sustainable water supplies, latrines and promote safer hygiene. It also tries to directly influence governments to implement water and sanitation policies.

‘And then there were None’ by Agatha Christie – 21st to 24th November

You are cordially invited to a weekend away on an isolated island, all expenses paid. Sound too good to be true, well that’s because there’s a hitch, your ticket is one way only! Although one of Agatha Christie’s bestselling stories (100 million copies sold) and a popular play it’s one that the Players haven’t performed before and is sure to have the audiences on the edge of their seats. The story revolves around a group of people lured into coming to a remote island under different pretexts. Upon arrival the guests and two servants are charged with crimes for which they’ve

seemingly escaped justice. Someone is determined to gain retribution on them and does so by using the lines from an old nursery rhyme. Can you work out who the murderer is before the final curtain? Auditions for this production are being held on Tuesday 7th August at Ditchling Village Hall at 8:00pm. With a cast of seven men and three women this is sure to be a popular play for both cast and audiences alike, so we look forward to seeing you there whether it’s to audition for a part or to offer your help backstage. If you would be interested in being involved in this production but either can’t make the audition or want more information please contact our producer Susie Beer on susiebeer13@googlemail.com.

AT HOME WITH… OWNERS Louisa is a designer and Charlie Nicholls a property developer. They live with Phoebe their seven-year-old daughter and a cat called Spike. They moved in eleven years ago. What do they think makes a house a home? “The open fire crackling in the grate on a cold winters day whilst we are huddled on the sofa listening to the rain beating against the window panes.”

L

BATHROOM The antique enamel bath in the family bathroom was painted in a fresh blue and sits on dark flooring tiles.

Louisa Nicholls does not use the word ‘wreck’ lightly when she describes the cottage she and her husband Charlie bought eleven years ago. “It was rotting from the roof to the floorboards. In some places you could put your fingers through gaps above the windows. It had been so neglected nobody else wanted it. We were the only bidders. Even the property developers were put off by its run down state and to make matters worse, it was listed.” When they first drove up the drive late one night Louisa says it looked so spooky she refused to get out of the car. It was definitely not love at first sight. But on the allotted viewing date, their hearts skipped a beat and as Louisa admits, “we did a U turn and being the impetuous couple that we are, we decided we had to have it, especially as only that morning we had agreed we could not spend another day living in our modern box.”

HOUSE A sixteenth century grade two listed cottage with an ugly 1970s extension – replaced three years ago by a new, but madeto-look-old, clapper board extension. What the family love most about this house: “The creaking floor boards which remind us of its 400 year history; it has always been a family home and has a very cosy, welcoming safe feel. We always wanted to live in an old house.” ROOMS Hall, lobby, sitting rooms for winter and summer, study, kitchen/dining room, four bedrooms and one bathroom and two en suite shower rooms.

DINING ROOM In the dining room the walls are painted in a vintage grey colour and make a good contrast to the dining chairs painted by Louisa in blue absolute matt emulsion. The giant spoon and fork hanging on the wall, the couple brought back from the US KITCHEN Above the cooking range in the kitchen alcove is a line up of Louisa’s copper pots

An example of one of Louisa’s many finds is this collection of school badges framed and mounted on natural calico

Using her keen creative eye and practical hands on approach, Louisa spent the next year tracking down most of her pieces at car boot sales, junk shops and vintage shops both on line and on the high street, painting them herself in light Scandinavian colours. “We sand blasted the black beams but because low beamed ceilings can still look dark and heavy, I found some ready painted French antiques to buy. Along with the bits I painted, they cancelled the claustrophobic effects of the low ceilings.” Louisa’s nifty money saving ideas left a generous budget for fabrics and pretty sofas. “As an interior designer, fabrics for me are so important. In fact they are my passion,” she smiles and points to a huge pile of fabric samples tucked into the corner of her study. “Every now and then I rummage through the pile for a remnant to reupholster a chair which Spike our cat has eaten a chunk out of or I make up another cushion to ring the changes.”

Finding quirky bits and things you like, “takes a life time of collecting so I keep collecting,” says Louisa. “I hate to throw pretty things away just because I am running out of space.” Living in a house which is already intrinsically eccentric, Louisa claims, gave her license to incorporate some crazy theatrical touches, which she celebrates in what she describes as “her little vignettes. The Roman busts which hopefully look like marble are just plastic painted to look otherwise.” She smiles. The giant size spoon and fork hanging on the wall of the dining room stimulates lots of dinner party conversations, and ever since Louisa spotted them on an American website, they went to the top of her must-have list. Eventually tracked down in Florida, Charlie and Louisa wrapped them in bubble wrap and persuaded the airline to allow them on board. “I am sure if we had a knife as well, they would have been confiscated.” GUEST BEDROOM The guest bedroom has a French bed, which was a vintage find, covered in a striking rose print quilt

EXTERIOR A brick path flanked by lavender leads to the front door of the 16th century cottage. The door used to be painted baby blue but was stripped to reveal the natural oak

SITTING ROOM The summer sitting room, which doubles up as Louisa’s study, opens into the garden through French doors. The curtain material was supplied and made up by an interior company, which is where the sofa covered in blue linen also came from. The Swedish clock was a birthday present from Charlie

Louisa’s final analysis has an eternal ring of truth voiced by many owners of old properties. “This house is an on going project and I am not sure when or if we shall ever finish it. We have become super tolerant of its foibles. Everything creaks including the floorboards, there are no straight walls and every doorframe is too low, but in our eyes, all that just adds to its charm. We love it, creaks and all.” l Photos: Robert Sanderson/Narratives Styling & Writing: Maggie Colvin/Narratives © narratives.co.uk

Discover the Retirement Village lifestyle Ever wondered what life is really like at Charters Village? Ready to be surprised? Charters Village in East Grinstead, West Sussex, is an established retirement village offering beautiful new homes in a parkland setting with superb clubhouse facilities. And despite its idyllic leafy setting, the neighbouring town of East Grinstead has all of the essential amenities and facilities you may need. The village also has great transport links with regular train services into London from East Grinstead train station. The M25 is also only a 20-minute drive away. It’s certainly not hard to see why this multi-award winning village is proving very popular with retirees across the country. Village life evolves around a central clubhouse, Charters Towers, a carefully restored former ballet school. The clubhouse provides residents with exclusive access to fantastic facilities including bar, restaurant, function room, library and a beautiful outdoor terrace.

A morning at Charters Village may start with a leisurely stroll around the vast manicured grounds – which are pet friendly too! Then you could pop along to the coffee morning and catch up with fellow residents in the restaurant, or pop to the library to pick up a new book. As lunchtime arrives, you might attend one of the many activities held at the village; boules, bridge club, keep fit class, croquet or film club to name a few. Your afternoon may then be spent at the local theatre or playing a round of golf.

You can host family and friends anytime at the village and your guests can stay overnight in one of the beautiful guest suites within Charters Towers. And as the gardening and cleaning are handled on your behalf, you can simply relax and enjoy your retirement without any of the hard work! When you buy a property at Charters Village, you’re not just buying the bricks and mortar of the building; you’re buying into a unique lifestyle that allows you to enjoy your retirement in a stunning location, with superb facilities and complete peace of mind.

Pre-owned and brand new properties start from just £349,950. Other charges apply. Part exchange is available subject to criteria. Call 01342 870871 or email: chartersvillagesales@retirementvillages.co.uk

CHARITY GARDEN TRAIL

Geoff Stonebanks tells us about the garden trails in July raising money for Macmillian Cancer Support and the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton

Dale View

T

At 70 Dale View in Hangleton meet Christopher ButlandSteed who was a familiar face on the popular Channel 4 reality show Gogglebox. He and his husband Tony have been doing an almost complete re-landscape of their garden over the last couple of years. They will be serving tea and cakes and selling homegrown plants too. Moving further east, there is 12 Ainsworth Avenue in Ovingdean. Jane Curtis’s small coastal garden was begun in 2014 and is still developing. Pergola, arches and arbor are strategically positioned to provide privacy and a choice of places to sit with different aspects, even a glimpse of the sea. Mixed planting, mostly new but several mature trees, including a large walnut that creates a focal point. In Saltdean you can even explore the jungle! Sue and Ray Rodmell Avenue Warner will be opening their garden again in 2018. They have landscaped their fabulous garden to take on the effect of a jungle. Visitors can follow the winding path through the jungle, and take tea in the clearing or check out the tree root throne. These are just 3 of the 23 glorious gardens on offer. The trail is officially opened by the “People’s Gardener”, Jim Buttress of BBC 2’s Big Allotment Challenge at 11am on the 28th July at Driftwood, 4 Marine Drive, Seaford BN25 2RS. l

he 28th and 29th July sees the 7th annual garden trail staged by Driftwood Fundraising Group, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton. The centre has been designed with input from people affected by cancer to make it the best place to offer the support and services that people in Sussex need. It is also one of the venues open over the weekend, as it too has a small garden terrace, so visitors can see where the money they are donating is being spent. This year there are 23 gardens opening their gates across the weekend, with 3 Follow the winding path on Sunday only, 4 on Saturday through the jungle or check only and 16 opening both dates. out the tree root throne 6 of the gardens are opening for the trail for the very first time in 2018. Many of the gardens will be serving delicious home-made teas and cakes and some selling garden art. Make sure you check the website before you plan your day. Full details of all the gardens, location maps and directions can be found at www. macmillangardentrail.co.uk or by calling Geoff Stonebanks on 01323 899296. Tickets can be purchased in the first garden visited and cost £2 per garden or buy a day saver ticket for £6 on each day which gives access to all gardens. Dogs on leads are allowed in many gardens too, look out for the doggy head on Ainsworth Avenue the website.

FRUIT The crops are coming in! Flo Whitaker explains how to harvest your fruit and veg regularly and make the most of summer’s bounty!

If it’s a persistent problem, try planting some mildewresistant varieties. Keeping foliage dry by watering the soil, not the leaves, helps, as does having good air circulation around the plants. Bear that in mind when pruning out old stems in spring - leave plenty of space and air flow for new growth. t’s all go on the fruit and veg patch in July. Pests and diseases seldom trouble rhubarb, Regular harvesting and inspection of but it is known for being a ‘Goldilocks’ plant. crops, (daily, if possible) is the key. Far Rhubarb is ultra-sensitive to environmental better to pick small-size produce, conditions and dislikes being too wet, too dry, rather than delay for a few days and be too hot or too cold - like Goldilocks, it wants faced with unappetising bullet-hard peas everything to be ‘just right’. Rhubarb sometimes produces curious-looking flower shoots. If left, they will rob energy from the plant, so cut them off at the base. Strawberry plants produce ‘runners’ in high summer; long, non-fruiting stems with ‘nodes’ - specially adapted joints that root when they touch soil. Runners should be removed, unless you want to make more plants for free! Strawberry plants run out of steam after a few years so it’s always useful to have some vigorous replacements in reserve. Cut stiff wire into 10 cm lengths and bend them to make ‘U’ shaped pins. Fill small pots (approx. 8 cms diameter) with gritty compost, lay a runner across a pot, press the node area gently into the surface of the compost and secure it in place with a pin - you may get several new plants from each runner. Keep the compost damp until the new plants are well-developed, (4-6 weeks), then cut away the nowredundant runners to make individual potted plants that can be easily transplanted. They will happily overwinter and crop for you next summer. l

LOCAL WALK

Inspired by a recent Sussex Living article on the benefits of walking, our former colleague, Lucy Sayers, ventured to Chanctonbury Ring with our resident rambler, Robert Veitch for a breath of fresh, downland air

T

urn left out of the car park at the southern end of Chanctonbury Ring Road, walking south for 100m before turning right for the bridleway. A metal 7-bar gate that needs navigating some 50m later is evidence this is the correct path. The wooded glades may be moist underfoot, but generally it’s pleasant. “A good ramble along the contours, through the downland microclimate” according to Lucy.

CHANCTONBURY RING

Walk

Just past an overgrown disused quarry on the left, is the rusty red corrugated structure of Owlscroft Barn on the right. Beyond the barn the path turns left and uphill, before turning right by two decaying tree trunks, after which it hugs the contour lines a little longer. Bear left when the path splits in two, turning left again at the T-junction that follows. From here it’s 400m to the summit. There’s no escaping the feeling this is the north face of the Eiger; your heart will be thumping, your lungs gasping, and your brow glowing. Ascending above the tree line the panorama north of the downs is to be commended, utterly glorious whatever the weather. We paused at the gate, the ‘rest and be thankful gate’ as Lucy called it, catching her breath, “that’s quite a climb, but well worth the effort.” From here it’s less than 100m to the top gate and summit.

The path skirts around Chanctonbury Ring, it’s history buried beneath arboreal shadows. In another era this was an Iron Age fort, subsequently inhabited by Romans. Trees were first planted in 1760 when Charles Goring (from Wiston) decided to beautify the hilltop. Most were blown down in the Great Storm of 1987, and they’ve since been replanted. The route follows the South Downs Way, sweeping to the right and downhill, two lines of gravel in the grass. Beyond the cattle grid, the path widens and gradually arcs left. At the four-way fingerpost, keep going, along the straight flat path ahead, with the greenery of Lion’s Bank on the left. Walk between crops towards the horizon, and then beyond. Almost 1km over the horizon a trig point will appear in the field on the right. Steyning should be visible to the east and Cissbury Ring to the south. A five-way fingerpost is 250m beyond the trig point. At the Walter Longmead memorial turn right onto the Monarch’s Way and follow the cinder path between the fences. The Monarch’s Way is the estimated 615 mile escape route of Charles I after

The path skirts around Chanctonbury Ring, it’s history buried beneath arboreal shadows his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The path rises over a brow and then heads downhill. Tarmac underfoot indicates this path once served another role, and a solitary cats eye confirms it. The hollow at the bottom of the hill is known as No Man’s Land although we wondered whether it really belonged to Norman! A chalky flint track leads up the other side of the hollow, but it’s easier on the feet trekking the grassy central reservation. The gradient eases off, after which it’s easy walking. Off to the left Cissbury Ring feels close enough to reach out and touch. Several paths coalesce at a junction. Turn right, almost back on oneself, and begin the hike back to the car park. The walk gains altitude, but only gradually. Veer right at the split and keep going, past a couple of pine trees and the woods at Stump Barn (the barn is no longer there). Over the hilltop, the path drops down to the four-way fingerpost. Beyond that, the ground falls away as the path enters Chalkpit Wood, descending the steep scarp slope of the downs via Wiston Bostal. It might be a little slippery in places when damp. There’s a wooden teepee about half way down, and a metal gate marks the bottom. Beyond this it’s just a short distance back to the car park. Lucy beamed, “I feel I’ve been on a real adventure, that I’ve done something rewarding with my day and earned the right to put my feet up tonight. This makes me appreciate the landscape we have here in Sussex, and inspires me to go walking more often.” l Whilst Les Campbell is recuperating from an accident, Robert Veitch has taken on the role of being Les’ legs. We hope that Les will be back out and walking again soon and wish him all the best with his recovery. Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. Sole power! Wouldn’t it be great to find shoes that felt so comfortable you didn’t notice you were wearing them? Ruth Lawrence swapped her restrictive trainers for Vibram® soles at Locks and Cobblers in Haywards Heath

atthew Aartsen, owner of Locks and Cobblers, has been trading at The Orchards Centre for a decade and is now supplying unique Italian Vibram® footwear in a multitude of options. I tried on a pair of supremely light ‘wrapping soles’ called Furoshiki, which is a Japanese term for wrapping and carrying objects in cloth. The upper sole of stretch fabric simply crosses, enclosing the foot and ensuring a snug fit without any tightness or the bulkiness of a conventional shoe. They offer the

and versatile, the soles come in a variety of designs to suit every purpose from everyday wear, walking, trekking and watersports to running and yoga. If you have shoes or boots that you love but whose soles are worn, slippery or coming adrift, Matthew can repair them with ‘Vibram® Sole Factor’, soles that completely redesign the shoe. Attached by a bonding process and made of rubber compounds (their ‘Eco’ range is 30% recycled) the soles are available in different colours and treads, suitable for any boot or shoe including converse trainers. Vibram® have been making soles for repairs since the 1950s and Matthew’s shop is one of only three cobblers in the UK who fit these ultra quality soles. Locks and Cobblers carry out a multitude of services including a fully mobile 24-hour locksmith callout for cars, house doors and safes. Car and house keys can be cut in the shop far less expensively than from a car dealer and computerised key cutting ensures a perfect match. Shoe care products are on sale along with leather watch straps, luggage, wallets, purses and belts. There is even a video transfer service, so you can have all your old tapes converted to DVD to enjoy again. When I regretfully removed the Vibram® soles, my own trainers suddenly felt rigid and bulky. These high-performance shoes are a real step forward if you’ll excuse the pun and I’d urge you to try on a pair to notice the enormous difference in comfort between them and conventional footwear. The older part of the village is now a conservation area with buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries and the earliest mention of ‘Tournoures Hill’ was in 1427 in a land transaction held by the Sussex Record Society. The name ‘Turnem Hill’ was found on a halfpenny piece from 1669 and in 1671 the diary of Revd. Giles Moore mentions Turner’s Hill when it was still written with the apostrophe, a practice which was dropped 90 years ago. BODY BUZZ

JUST ADD WATER Aside from swimming, water sports in general have been overlooked somewhat here on Body Buzz. Sasha Kanal says, no more!

WHAT’S SUP? First practiced in Hawaii and now hugely popular across the globe, SUP is the world’s fastest growing water sport. Contrary to belief, a stand up paddle board varies from a surfboard in that you have a paddle (as the name suggests!) and its usually crafted differently from a surfboard. But more of that later! GET UP, STAND UP – SUP FOR FITNESS The beauty of SUP is that the activity isn’t confined to the beach and you don’t require waves to do it. In fact, many water sports centres around Sussex offer lessons and courses for adults and kids alike in reservoirs, lakes, rivers and coastal lagoons. 68 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2018

SUP FOR THE MIND There are clear benefits to be had for your mind and general wellbeing too from SUP. The freedom and peace to be gained from gliding at your own pace through water cannot be understated. Being near water is naturally calming plus you’re fully immersing yourself in nature and all whilst exploring your surroundings.

The freedom and peace to be gained from gliding at your own pace through water cannot be understated It’s great for your overall fitness too. SUP is a brilliant all body workout as you tend to use your mid back, shoulders, arms (triceps and biceps) a lot. Plus, the art of keeping yourself balanced and centred while you glide

ALL THE GEAR Stand up paddle boards come as either rigid boards or an inflatable watercraft. So now all you need is the gear. Most water sports clubs where you choose to go will provide you with the kit when you take a lesson. If you plan to do the sport regularly what you choose will depend on your budget, storage space and how far you live from the water you’re choosing to paddle board on. Any good water sports shop will help you find the right board for your size. Don’t forget to check what’s included - some come with paddles, straps and pumps as standard. So, what are you waiting for? Get out of your comfort zone and try a watersport today. l

CAUTION: If you have any long-standing health concerns, always consult your GP if you’re starting a new exercise.

H

ere in our beautiful corner of the world, we have access to kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, waterskiing, jet skiing and kite surfing, whether on one of the many beautiful Sussex beaches or inland at a reservoir or river. This month however, we look at the joys of Stand Up Paddle boarding or SUP as it’s known in water sports circles.

is a wonderful way of working every muscle group, strengthening your legs and maintaining your core balance. A bonus is that it’s a low impact activity but you can burn up to 430 calories per hour leisurely paddling at a casual pace (about twice that of walking).

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Quintessentially British tailoring meets Sicilian summer sunshine The team from Sussex-based Dandylion Style - renowned for their personalised, customer focussed approach - took time out of a hectic schedule to bring together this unique collection for Spring/Summer. It combines traditional British cuts and cloths with a twist of sophistication inspired by Sicily, that edgiest of islands at the tiptoe of Italy. Igor has yet again created a contemporary look with that unique touch of individuality to catch the eye and capture the imagination, while maintaining that classic feel that ensures that the wearer feels confident and comfortable at any occasion. Shot against their breathtaking Mediterranean backdrop and the timeless elegance of Sicily’s stunning architecture, these pictures capture the mood of the Dandylion-styled man – classy, discerning, cool – but above all an individual. The clothes may indeed make the man, but the man needs to make the clothes suit his needs and personality, and with the Dandylion approach, the customer is helped to decide on fabric, features, form and, if required, funkiness every step of the way. So whether you fancy yourself as James Bond, off to the casino at sunset, as a city slicker with obligatory braces and stock-market steel, or waist-coated with a touch of the Poldark – Dandylion Style can help you bring the dream to life. 70 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2018

BEAUTY

Big & BEAUTIFUL

New mum Sara Whatley shares her fashion tips for dressing the big baby belly over the summer months, not always an easy job…

D

ressing a baby bump stylishly can be a challenge at any stage, but when the weather is hot it’s tempting to wear nothing at all – unfortunately not always the most appropriate option! Thinking about what you can wear, let’s take a look at some summer options to keep you blooming mamas looking cool, in both senses of the word. Not everyone wants to fill their wardrobe with specific maternity wear, or empty their purse for that matter, on clothes which have a relatively short shelf life. It’s definitely worth investing

in a few key maternity items though – some leggings and smart work trousers if you need, maybe a pair of shorts for the summer, a dress, a few tops and a couple of jumpers. A swimming costume is a must too; trust me, a baby belly does not fit into a regular sized one! For the rest of your wardrobe there are many fashionable options to wear which are not specifically maternity branded. Just make sure you try before you buy and maybe go up a few sizes.

Summer is the perfect time to find floaty smock dresses which happily skim over a growing baby bump Summer is the perfect time to find floaty smock dresses which happily skim over a growing baby bump, likewise with tunic tops and blouses which look great paired over some smart trousers or three-quarter length leggings. Empire line dresses can be very accommodating and flattering with their high-waisted cut and elongating skirt and are a good option for both smart and casual wear. T-shirt dresses stretch with a ballooning belly (although they may

72 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2018

never return to their original size again!) and for chillier days and evenings jumper dresses work well too. A long loose cardi fits at any stage, and can be easily closed with a pretty scarf tied over the top of the bump. Pencil skirts made out of t-shirt material are very practical and comfortable too and will fit all the way through from small to big bump. Pleated skirts are another fab option, able to grow with you. Choosing breathable fabrics will help keep your temperature down when the weather hots up – a lightweight cotton or linen are ideal. And open toed, wide fit shoes or flip flops will keep your feet happy – the last thing you want is tight straps digging into your swollen ankles. One thing that always fits, no matter what your size, are accessories. If you are feeling a bit low in the style stakes invest in a mega pair of sunnies, or this season’s XXL earring trend – florals, tassels, beaded, sculptural plastics, faces – just make sure they are at least shoulder length. Layer up some delicate necklaces or instantly lift any outfit with a statement brooch, big news on the SS 2018 runways. Be big, beautiful, comfortable and relaxed this summer. Now put your feet up! l

HEALTH

DEMENTIA This month in his neurological health series, Dr Rees explores dementia

D

ementia is a frequent condition affecting a predominately older population world-wide, although it may present in middle age and rarely much younger. According to some observers, dementia has reached ‘epidemic proportions’. This is probably because we are all living much longer rather than that there is a significant increase in the causes of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease, described by Alois Alzheimer in 1906 accounts for about 80% of dementia, 10% of which is familial. It is caused in part by the accumulation of beta amyloid protein and also neuro fibrillary tangles in the brain cortex (where the ‘grey cells’ live). There are a number of similar conditions including, fronto temporal dementia, dementia with Lewy Bodies and a dementia which can also occur in patients with long standing Parkinson’s disease. Vascular dementia accounts for about 10% of cases. It is due partly to changes in small brain arteries, it is often associated with hypertension in the absence of obvious strokes but can also occur in the context of a number of major strokes. Dementia can occur in association with some toxins, for example alcohol and the recently notorious nerve agents, in association with some deficiency syndromes eg low thyroid and low B vitamins. There are many conditions affecting the nervous system that can occasionally present with, or develop into, an associated dementia, eg syphilis and HIV/AIDS, there are also many very rare conditions causing dementia.

Huntington’s disease is a dominantly inherited condition causing involuntary movements and invariable dementia, recent research is very exciting. Finally, serious brain trauma may be associated with dementia. The typical features are an insidious development of memory loss especially for recent events, confusion, personality change, language difficulties, anxiety, depression and loss of confidence. The diagnosis is based on the history, an examination and a formal test of cognitive (higher brain) function. Imaging of the brain is ideally performed with an MRI or less usefully a CT scan. The different conditions already mentioned often have specific abnormalities in the various tests, although in the early stages, all tests including brain imaging may be

normal. It is essential to speak to a relative or close friend as well as the patient to establish a clear history. The symptoms of dementia typically result in an impaired ability to function at the individual’s normal level, may result in early retirement if younger and in due course interfere with fully independent living and an increasing dependence on family, friends and social services. Sadly, treatment is very limited for the vast majority of patients, only rarely can a deficiency or metabolic cause be found and corrected. For the overwhelming majority of dementias, although the details are quite well known the primary cause that results in the brain pathology and then the symptoms that are so distressing, are largely unknown. There is an enormous research effort in academic departments around the world to better understand the basic mechanisms in order to try and develop lines of treatment. So far, with the exception of drugs such as donepezil which increase the availability of a chemical messenger called acetyl choline to the brain cells which improve memory for 6-9 months, there has been very little pharmaceutical success and many, many failures. The enormous cost of finding and developing new drugs is such that this has resulted in some major pharmaceutical firms pulling out of the ‘dementia area’. However, there is much that can be done to support and encourage patients and their families through very difficult times and local social services and the Alzheimer’s Society provide absolutely essential services. l

COMMUNITY

A big part of what we do is bring people together

Making

HEADWAY

Offering support to people with Acquired Brain Injury, Headway West Sussex provides invaluable resources and information to the community. Speaking from Headway, Kate O’Neill explains further

It’s just lovely to be with a group of people [who] understand my problems and make me feel I’m not alone.” These are recent words of a person with a brain injury who attends one of the support groups run by Headway West Sussex. When life is severely challenged after an injury, we’ve found that sharing feelings and experiences with others in the same boat is enormously helpful – and so a big part of what we do is bring people together. It’s a little known fact that around 4,500 hospital admissions each year in

West Sussex are due to an ‘ABI’. This stands for Acquired Brain Injury and describes someone who has sustained an injury after birth. You may wonder why the numbers seem so high and the answer lies in the very wide range of causes. Road accidents, assaults and falls are common but damage is also caused through a stroke, haemorrhage, illness or brain tumour. And of course, the brain is fragile and crucial to ensuring we can manage all aspects of our lives. At Headway, we often say that “brain injury doesn’t just affect

individuals – it affects whole families.” This is because symptoms create enormous challenges in everyday life. They include loss of concentration and memory, the sudden onset of extreme fatigue, issues with speech, language, hearing and sight, mood swings and difficulties with balance. These symptoms often go hand in hand with a lack of insight – into themselves and into those around them. Families may be coping with many of these symptoms but the person with the ABI is unaware of the difficulties and heartbreak it is causing. The partner of one of those we support explained, “it felt like they picked up a random stranger and put him down in our house with my kids.” Headway West Sussex is an independent charity and specialises in supporting people with ABI in the community. Our focus is on providing good and timely information, organising peer support, providing individual support when life becomes more challenging and raising awareness amongst the public and organisations. We produce an Information Pack available from our website or by post and run five monthly Support Groups where our facilitators introduce topics for discussion and encourage sharing of experiences. We work with individual people and families and help them steer through their difficulties. All that we do is designed to help people understand and cope with challenging symptoms, feel better able to manage their lives day to day – and not to feel so alone. We fundraise continuously to keep going and depend entirely on the generosity of donors and charitable trusts. For further information visit www.headwaywestsussex.org.uk or call us on 07938 858153. l

COMMUNITY

Hanna Prince spoke to 95 year old Roy Lingham about his life growing up in Fletching and surrounding areas

W

hen 95-yearold Roy Lingham was growing up in Fletching, he thought nothing of milking two cows each morning before school. Now he’s written a book about his memories. Talking to Roy Lingham is like opening a window onto Sussex’s distant past. The 95-year-old is a born raconteur, never happier than when he’s telling stories about his childhood on a Fletching farm. His memories of a golden era before modern technology and mass transport are redolent with nostalgia – he can recall collecting the earth from mole hills with a miniature pony and trap so that his mother could use it for repotting plants, milking cows before school and cycling 25 miles to East Grinstead and back of an evening just to pick up fish and chips. “We were living on the breadline all the time, but we were happy,” he says. Roy was born at Ashurstwood in 1922. His parents had just taken on the lease of Woolpack Farm in Fletching, and his mum had to leave the new baby with his grandparents while she returned to care for the cows. “They had 11 or 12 cows and mum used to milk them

Rambles

every day of the week,” he explains. “The milk money coming in was the only thing they had to pay the rent. Dad ploughed up the fields to grow crops when they moved in, but they had to wait two years to get their money and it wasn’t until then that I could go and live with them.” Fletching of the 1920s and 30s was an idyllic place for a child to grow up. When Roy wasn’t attending the local primary school, he was helping his mum milk cows or make wheat and raisin wine. He remembers collecting bread

from the Fletching bakery (“you got a cottage loaf for tuppence or thruppence”) and discovering strange pits in the woodland around Sheffield Park. “I found out later that these were relics from where Sussex oaks were felled to build ships for early explorers like Drake and Raleigh,” he says. In 1942 Roy met his wife, Irene, and together they farmed Vigoes Farm. It wasn’t until they were approaching retirement that

We were living on the breadline all the time, but we were happy

a friend suggested he write some of his memories down. “I said no. She said, why not? I said, I can’t spell. I’ve still got my school report saying ‘essay excellent, spelling putrid’! But in the end I agreed, and I started writing for the Fletching Parish magazine.” Three years ago, Roy’s friend Sonia Harriyott began to think that his articles would make a fascinating book. She decided to publish the collection through a self-publication website and presented him with a copy as a suprise on his 95th birthday. Now Roy’s Rambles is available online, making his memories available to anyone with an interest in local history. l

Rolo the Border Terrier finds summer months the perfect time to forage for extra snacks, and his apprentice Teddy is catching on quickly!

It’s a Dog’s Life O

ne of the things I enjoy about this time of year is the summer food. Now I think it’s fair to say that I have a fairly eclectic taste when it comes to edibles, and, to be honest, the not quite edible, as I don’t want to risk missing something good. After all, if it turns out that something I’ve consumed isn’t really digestible, it usually finds its own way out, one end or the other, and I’ve always got staff on hand to help in the clearing up department. I do, however, have some dietary preferences that are well served by the summer months. Take soft fruit. I try to at every opportunity! ‘Her Indoors’ grows strawberries and blueberries in the veg plot and little Alpine strawberries free range in the side border which are absolutely perfect for a small dog with a good sense of smell. I wonder if my apprentice, Teddy, knows how to ‘pick your own’? If not, he soon will do. When Teddy first came to us, he was

a slow and frankly picky eater. I soon trained him out of that nonsense. Once I had finished my own food, unless ‘Her Indoors’ spoilt the fun by feeding us separately, I immediately went over to Teddy’s bowl and finished his off too. This has made him much quicker at eating his food, in fact, he often finishes before me now which just shows how effective my instruction has been.

What could be nicer than a picnic blanket with an array of food laid out Another summer edible that I enjoy is ice cream. They make special ice cream for dogs, but, if I’m entirely honest, I prefer the human kind. It’s not that I’m specifically given any, it’s just that people seem incapable of eating one without dribbling or dropping some and I’m very good at clearing up. In

addition, I’m not above a bit of timely theft if someone is foolish enough to sit down on the grass and start waving an ice cream or lolly around. I might be senior but it’s amazing how high I can jump with a little incentivising. And that brings me on to the happy topic of picnics. What could be nicer than a picnic blanket with an array of food laid out. You don’t even have to jump – perfect! ‘Her Indoors’ took Teddy and myself recently, on a Border Terrier walk with a picnic lunch for the people. She had to try and eat a packed lunch whilst sitting on the floor with both Teds and I in close proximity. I have to say her reflexes are pretty good for a woman of her age! Still, if you can’t get at your own picnic, there’s always someone else’s, and ‘Her Indoors’ is also good at dragging me off other people’s food and apologising profusely. I don’t know what her problem is. Summer eating is all about alfresco dining and sharing with others… l

BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest

THE FALL GUY

THE LAST TUDOR

A STORY LIKE THE WIND

This starts very slowly, but it is well worth sticking with, as the first part is a series of clues about the psychology of the narrator, Matthew. Nothing is obvious, and the plot doesn’t really take off until two thirds of the way through. The setting is just too perfect, so you know something will go wrong with the triangular relationship of Matthew, his cousin Charlie and Charlie’s wife Chloe. As Matthew is a failed chef, there’s a lot of detail about the food he cooks, but it isn’t boring

This is written in the three very different voices of the Grey sisters, granddaughters of Henry VII. Lady Jane Grey is the familiar one – Protestant queen for only nine days after the death of fifteenyear-old Edward VI, and beheaded by Mary, who brought back the Catholic religion. Jane was the academic one, one of the most learned young women of her day despite being only seventeen at the time of her death. The next sister, Katherine, is the most ignorant and gullible, who will bend with the

This tale of refugees adrift in an inflatable boat is endorsed by Amnesty International. Each person offers some of what they have to the others – bread, lemonade, a shawl. But Rami, the narrator, has only brought his violin with him, so he refuses to take anything. All he has to offer is music, and stories. The story he tells is of the origin of the violin as a descendant of the horsehead fiddle, which is debatable but doesn’t really matter because he’s a good storyteller. The setting is

by James Lasdun

Before long, you’re screaming at Matthew to do the obvious thing and I learned a lot. Before long, you’re screaming at Matthew to do the obvious thing and tackle the right person about his suspicions. But he’s oh so good at avoiding the issue, and it all comes home to roost in the end. It’s hard to review this without giving away any spoilers. The writing is of a high standard, and all the characters are flawed in one way or another. The background detail that explains some of the events comes rather late in the tale, but it’s enough to make the damaged teenager that Matthew used to be behave the way he does. It’s not a long read, but it becomes more compulsive towards the end.

by Philippa Gregory

The girls are pawns in the political life of the times prevailing religion and thinks more of dresses and jewels than theology. The youngest sister, Mary, is described as very small with a twisted spine, but is probably the most realistic of the three. The girls are pawns in the political life of the times, and after Queen Mary dies and Elizabeth succeeds to the throne Katherine and Mary are next in line. Consequently, they cannot marry without the queen’s permission, and when they both do so they are imprisoned and treated very cruelly. It’s a long book but a fascinating one. None of the girls are particularly likeable but their motivations and actions are believable and well described.

by Gill Lewis

The story he tells is of the origin of the violin Mongolia, where wild horses run free on the steppe. I’ve been there, and listened to traditional musicians. It’s a haunting sound, and the story of the rescued horse and the tail-hairs used for the bow suit the situation, at sea, miles from anywhere. I’m not really sure what age-group this is aimed at, as the language can be very sophisticated and the story doesn’t really have a beginning or an end – it’s an episode in the life of a group of refugees which could represent any set of displaced persons. The illustrations by Jo Weaver, however, are wonderful, and the hardback book itself is beautifully made and a delight to hold.

CHARITY

Who can resist those deep soulful eyes and long fluffy ears? Ruth Lawrence meets the donkeys in need of a new shelter

W

ith their diminutive size, distinctive personalities and long ears, donkeys have always held a soft spot in people’s hearts; I met with Sarah Austin and Janet Hammond from Sussex Horse Rescue to be introduced to their small herd in Uckfield. The donkey herd is part of the Sussex Horse Rescue Trust which does wonderful work giving a new life to abandoned and neglected horses, ponies and donkeys in the region. I was introduced to Dave and Jimbo, two donkeys who will have completed a sponsored donkey walk from Clayton to Ditchling Beacon by the time you are reading this article. The walk’s purpose is to help raise the £2,000 desperately needed for a shelter with a dry floor so that the donkeys will avoid damaging hoof conditions that affect them because of our damp climate. Inspiration for the trek came from a book called ‘The Wisdom of Donkeys’ by Andy Merrifield, who travelled across France with Gribouille, “a tender and intelligent donkey with soft thick fur on his brow.” When Sarah was on a course at Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary, she met the man who trained Andy and an

Travels WITH A Donkey idea took shape once she had read the book. The Trust is always keen to hear from volunteers and

fundraisers and gratefully accepts clothing, books and horse tack for their onsite charity shop. You can sponsor a donkey and if your premises and lifestyle are suitable you can apply to have one on loan. When a donkey comes to the sanctuary they are often hungry, suffering from neglect and fearful; they are treated for worms, have their feet looked after and receive lots of loving attention. Vets bills here can be enormous and donations are hugely appreciated. If they have been mistreated, it can take a long time to gain a donkey’s trust but when they accept a person they can be naturally loving, willing and sweet tempered. The Sanctuary is open every Sunday throughout the summer from 11am to 4pm or by appointment if you are interested in volunteering or loaning. Sarah and Janet clearly adore all the donkeys in their

care and as I stroked Jimbo and Dave, it became obvious why donkeys are universally loved by children and adults alike. Less daunting in size and behaviour for many kids than a pony, these intelligent, friendly animals have highly individual personalities and behaviours. Spending time with one can encourage you to slow down and become more mindful; in this busy world, that can be a valuable lesson. l www.sussexhorserescuetrust. org.uk To donate visit: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ SarahAustin18
