t’s rare to find an office with a view as wide and as expansive as found in the Adur & Worthing Council’s foreshore office. But, when the sun is shining, the team based in the hut on Worthing beach believe they are some of the luckiest public sector workers in the country. It’s not just the view taking in the whole of the shore, with Worthing Pier on the left and the sounds of the Lido arcades coming in from the right, which makes this job special though.
Take one step out of the office and you will find a whole range of gadgets and vehicles, including quad bikes, two RIB boats and jet skis, that the team use on a daily basis to keep visitors to the beach and the sea safe. Rob Dove has been with the team for just over a year, having previously worked for the RAF. “It’s a challenging role,” he said. “But just like when I was in the military, every day is different; you never know what you may be responding to, and like a lot of people,
the fact I can help the public out in the town where I live makes this a very rewarding role. “It’s so nice to be able to provide that service while using a lot of the skills I have, such as first aid training or power boating.” The team is made up of a mix of four full time members of staff, as well as a number of seasonal staff. Between them they patrol more than ten miles of seafront from Ferring across to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Shoreham.

We aim to be on the water within three minutes Being part of the foreshore team is not just about getting out on the water. As well advising swimmers, kitesurfers and jet skiers on safety so that everyone can enjoy the waters off our shore, there are a range of other day-to-day activities.
These include ensuring dog walkers keep to the designated dog friendly areas of the beach, keeping bikes off the pier, picking up bits of debris off the shore, inspecting some of the 232 private and 131 council-owned beach huts and doing checks on fairground ride vehicles that
visit during the summer. The foreshore team also support in emergency incidents, providing assistance to the coastguard and RNLI as recently as this weekend when a kayaker had a heart attack while out at sea.

June is a busy time for the small team, with the seasonal staff getting to grips with the daily tasks that being part of the foreshore team brings up. Brooke Marshall is one of these seasonal workers, being employed in July and August in between studying in Canterbury. Her favourite task is patrolling the Worthing Borough Council-owned Worthing Pier, which involves checking the fishermen have the correct permits, making sure the pedestrian areas are clear and safe and ensuring members of the public are not accessing areas they should not be in. She said, “my friend did something like this in Bexhill so I thought I’d apply. I think this role is better though as while she just walks along the seafront I get to use some of the powerboats. And it’s nice to be outdoors and talk to members of the public.” Then, of course, there are general enquiries from the public. When I was visiting, a woman popped into the office to ask where the best place would be to take her grandchildren crabbing. It’s one of a number of queries that come in, ranging from tide times to helping someone find their flip flops, all of which the team are happy to help with. Plus, every day at about 4.30pm a black Labrador called Stanley comes
running in to see the team and get a biscuit treat as his owner goes on a daily seafront stroll. In total, the team deal with hundreds of incidents every month. Senior Foreshore Inspector Graham Cherrett, who manages the team said, “the day starts with checking in with the coastguard team at Lee-on-Solent and seeing if there have been any incidents in our area. “After that we will get all the equipment out so we are ready to
respond in case of emergency. We aim to be on the water within three minutes although it can take longer in times of bad weather. “We will then be out on patrol two, three or four times a day, monitoring what’s going on. wenty-five years after opening in Haywards Heath, family-owned funeral director P & S Gallagher is moving to impressive new premises. The company is already a local success story, with a glowing reputation for delivering compassionate, highly personalised service. Now, a spacious new facility in Sussex Road will allow the highly qualified team behind P & S Gallagher to expand their offering still further. “When we first opened in Triangle Road, our premises were really modern,” explains the company’s joint founder, Patrick Gallagher. “We’ve expanded as a business since then and we need a bigger space to care for people.” Centrally located with a bright, welcoming interior and plenty of parking space, the new office is a result of substantial investment and planning. It boasts a dedicated mortuary facility and a state-of-the art service suite that can host a funeral service on site for up to 50 attendees. With the latest audiovisual equipment, this, Patrick points out proudly, will allow friends and family members to participate in their loved one’s funeral even if they can’t be there in person. It’s thoughtful touches like this that P & S Gallagher are known for. “We offer a highly personalised service,” says Matthew Gallagher, who followed his father into the business in 2011 and now looks after both the Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath offices. “You can tell us what you want, and we’ll provide it – or if you aren’t quite sure what you want, we can offer guidance. We have organised church funerals, military funerals and requiem mass, but we have also had DJs playing at funerals in more outlandish venues and can arrange green funerals and burials as well.” This personalised approach extends to all aspects of the planning process.

ON UP Independent funeral director P & S Gallagher is celebrating their move to spacious new premises this month with an open day on Saturday 28th July. Hanna Prince went along to meet the team to find out more
Recently, a family asked Patrick if he could construct a coffin from timber that had come down during the Great Storm of 1987. His answer? No problem. “I started out in 1962, and I had the kind of training that you just don’t get anymore,” he explains. “We did everything, including making our own coffins. I have a diploma in funeral directing, I’m a qualified embalmer and I’m also a qualified tutor and trainer.” Patrick and his wife Sandy have lived in Sussex since 1974, with Matthew attending school in Cuckfield. In 1992 they opened P & S Gallagher in Haywards Heath. The company has gone from strength to strength since then, opening Bowley Funeral Service in Hassocks in partnership with Paul Bowley in 1999, establishing
another office in Burgess Hill in 2010 and opening as Bowley & Gallagher in Preston Park, Brighton in 2016. Despite this impressive growth, P & S Gallagher has remained true to its local, independent roots. “We’ve been involved with community events ever since we opened here,” explains Patrick. “This year we organised a big band concert in Cuckfield for the local RAF Association and sponsored the Cuckfield Christmas Tree Festival. We brought the Virtual Dementia Tour to Burgess Hill in May,

and we also put 6,000 lights in the giant Christmas tree at St John’s in Burgess Hill town centre every year.” The company’s staff are all local as well, trained to a high standard through the IFD College in addition to completing training in-house. Patrick is passionate about training and education – he himself is a past national president of both the British Institute of Funeral Directors (BIFD) and the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF). Matthew has followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a qualified assessor and internal verifier for the Independent Funeral Directors College. P & S Gallagher’s strong connection with trade organisations enables the company to stay at the cutting edge of its industry. The business has changed exponentially over the past few decades. Funerals are increasingly seen as a chance to celebrate a person’s life, and non-religious funerals now account for the majority of services in our area. The other major change is the increase in the number of people who are interested in pre-planning and prepaying for funerals. Looking at how to protect their clients in the future is a crucial part of P & S Gallagher’s remit. “We have very strong skills and knowledge in that area,” explains Matthew. “We can provide very good, reputable funeral plans in association with Golden Charter, which is the only company of its kind owned by independent funeral directors, and I am

HISTORY Wilkes was welcomed by cheering crowds and pealing bells. Lewes was also home to a society of intellectuals who met regularly at the White Hart Hotel to engage in political and philosophical debate. It seems likely that Paine’s revolutionary theories were
In any other place he might have dwindled into respectable middle age – but Lewes was different honed through the conversations he had here (the society reformed in 1987 and is still active today). We do know that he published his first political work while living in Lewes – a 12-page article called The Case of the Officers of Excise, which appealed for higher wages for his fellow workers. It was this text that ultimately led to Paine’s leaving Sussex. He
Paine’s World Thomas Paine laid the pathway to American Independence, but as Hanna Prince found out, the seeds of his revolutionary thinking may originally have been sown in Lewes
W
hen Thomas Paine arrived in Lewes during the spring of 1768, he was yet to accomplish anything remarkable. His early life had been spent drifting between jobs – privateer, corset maker, teacher – and he only came to Sussex through an assignation as an excise man. Ensconced in Bull House at the top of the High Street, Paine quickly began to assimilate himself into local life. He joined the town’s governing body, took on membership of the local parish vestry and married his landlord’s daughter, Elizabeth Ollive. In any other place he might have dwindled into respectable middle age – but Lewes was different. The town had a history of radical thinking. It had opposed the monarchy and housed republican thinkers since
the 17th century. The local Sussex Weekly Advertiser published editorial infused with a distinctly revolutionary bent. And, during Paine’s residence, liberal member of parliament John
spent too much time away from his post campaigning for the cause of excise officers, a failure that led to his dismissal. His tobacco shop flopped, his marriage failed, and he emigrated to America via a brief stint in London. It was here that he established a lasting place in history by authoring works such as Common Sense, The Rights of Man and The Age of Reason. Take a stroll around Lewes today and you’ll find traces of Paine everywhere. There’s a beautiful mural by Julian Bell in Market Passage, a statue outside the library and a discreet brown plaque on the wall of Bull House. You can see the tilting ground in the castle precinct where he used to play bowls and drink a pint in the bar where his debating society once met. It isn’t just the architecture that remembers America’s founding father, though. With its political activism, progressive ideals and off-beat intellectual culture, Lewes is still a town after Paine’s own heart. l

MAPPING THE NATION WITH You might tap away on your phone, maybe pan across your laptop, while others still stay faithful to paper. But have you ever wondered how Ordnance Survey mapping came to be? Robert Veitch tells us more
T
he strategic mapping of Britain began in 1745, following the Battle of Culloden. Under the stewardship of an engineer called William Roy, Scotland took eight years to map. In 1784 with the first rumbles of discontent emanating across the Channel, Roy was charged with the task of accurately mapping the land between London and Paris. This required the invention of what became known as ‘The Great Theodolite’ and utilised a process called triangulation. It was completed before the French Revolution and Napoleon’s rise to power. he month of June is always the busiest month in the Sussex calendar, with over 100 individual garden openings. One in particular, Lindfield Jungle, about 1½ miles north east of Haywards Heath, is a surprising, yet intimate garden. It is hidden behind a 1950s mid terrace house. Described by its owners as a fantasy, packed full of plants to evoke tropical far-away places. Tim Richardson and Clare Wilson have transformed it into an atmospheric jungle oasis, planted for tropical effect. It is approximately 17 metres x 8 metres, with an emphasis on foliage and hot colours that develop through the seasons. From the planter’s terrace enjoy the winding path through lilies, cannas, ginger and bamboo, to the tranquil sundowner’s deck over hidden pools. There are some unusual plants to see too. Why not join Tim and Clare for tiffin! This garden opens by arrangement from 1st June to 31st October. Contact the garden owner to arrange a visit (12 maximum).
Sienna Wood, one mile west of East Grinstead also opens for the first time on Sunday 3rd June. The visitor can meander through this peaceful 3½ acre garden, enjoy the lovely lakeside walk and the 6-acre ancient woodland behind. Start at the herbaceous borders, surrounding the croquet lawn, through the formal rose garden to the lawns and summer borders; then down through the arboretum to the lake and back through the vegetable garden. En route you can see many unusual trees and shrubs. There is a children’s nature trail, treehouse and play area and possibly a sighting of wild deer including white deer. The final member of this brand new trio is Mill Hall Farm, Whitman’s Green. On Sunday June 10th this relatively young garden, on the High Weald, opens for the first time. It is a north facing 2½-acre garden with a long view sloping down to the pond with lilies, irises, sanguisorba to name but a few. See the long border bursting with young trees and herbaceous plants. Failed at hanging baskets? Have another go! Flo Whitaker explains how many plants will cope with high-rise living, just so long as you give them a little TLC

any people try - then fail spectacularly at hanging baskets, vowing, “never again!” as they assume they’re useless at gardening. This is a great shame as folk don’t realise that they’re setting the horticultural bar very high. Hanging baskets are one of the most difficult disciplines in the gardening world. After all, what you are really trying to do is to grow plants suspended in mid-air, in a colander, with limited access to soil and water. Tricky…
Firstly, ensure your basket fixing is safe and secure! When filled, even the smallest basket will weigh more than you think. Next, consider how you’re going to keep the basket watered. You can purchase a long ‘watering wand’ attachment for a hosepipe which allows

Or there are clever ‘rise and fall’ pulley systems that will lower the basket up and down. That’s great, but if you can’t keep the soil adequately moist you’re back to square one. Leaf mould is brilliant stuff; a handful mixed into potting soil will hold water like a sponge. Speaking of sponges… those square spongy washing-up cloths are perfect in hanging baskets. Place a couple in the bottom layer of soil and
they’ll trap water, preventing it from running straight through the bottom. Another good idea is to bury a plant saucer in the compost - it will also hold a reservoir of moisture. If placed in a sunny spot, be prepared to water your hanging basket once a day - or twice in particularly hot weather. Hanging basket plants need to put on a lot of growth in a short space of time - they require regular feeding.

Use a weekly liquid feed diluted in water, or food pellets mixed into the potting compost - the pellets will slowly release nutrients over the growing season. Deadheading is a bore, but is well worth it with hanging baskets as it will encourage plants to keep the display going. Plastic hanging baskets do a functional job for very little money, but are not terribly attractive. They’re excellent for creating a ‘ball’ of plants where scarcely any trace of the container can be seen. Other baskets are more decorative and are made to be shown off, so choose plants that are not over-exuberant in growth, or be prepared to selectively trim stems. Baskets made from natural materials such as woven wicker or grasses will naturally compliment the scene. Cone-
shaped baskets; wide at the top, tapering to a thin point, always look better and more ‘balanced’ if you can still view the lower part of the container, as opposed to an unruly mess cascading down the sides like bad hair extensions. I particularly love those delicatelooking wirework baskets. Made from galvanised metal in quiet shades of silvery-grey, they’re not cheap, but, with care, (empty them and store indoors during winter) will last a good few years. Pre-formed liners are available for standard baskets, but for non-standard shapes you’ll need to make your own. You’ll require damp moss or coir fibre and lots of patience - bah! The secret is to use plenty of material in a thick layer. Build the liner from the bottom upwards, firming against the sides and filling with soil and plants as you go. Hanging baskets are so ubiquitous that we scarcely give them a second thought, but they can probably trace their origins back to antiquity. In

Ancient Italy it was the custom for taverns to advertise themselves by hanging a grapevine wreath on a pole outside their establishments. It is thought that the Romans bought the tradition with them during their occupation of the British Isles, although they must have used other materials - garlands of ivy or sheaves of barley, perhaps? Certainly, some of our oldestknown ale houses bore names such as ‘The Bush’, or ‘The Bird and Bush’ or ‘Ye Old Bull and Bush’. So, if your hanging basket display fails to impress this summer, never mind. Grab a corkscrew, put your feet up, and do what the Ancient Romans did! l

The story of Julia and Jeremy Scowsill’s home can be divided into two very distinct periods: BF and AF - Before the Fire and After the Fire. In 1996 Julia and her family, sons Tom and Monty then just toddlers, moved into the house. Designed by an architect for his own use just prior to the second world war it was an ideal family home, spacious and with a large garden, “we walked in and it just felt right,” Julia remembers. They stripped artex off walls and ceilings and re-decorated, put in a new kitchen and bathrooms, and installed a swimming pool and a tennis court in the garden. Then, in 2006, shortly after returning from holiday, the house was totally devastated by fire caused by an electrical fault in the tumble dryer. “I was out shopping,” Julia They created a wonderfully recalls, “when I got a call saying spacious hall at the front of the house was on the house with a striking and fire.” She followed grand staircase winding up the wail of sirens coming from a to the re-built first floor fleet of fire engines and then stood in the garden and, “watched our past go up in flames.” It was a horrible experience. Most importantly though, no one was in the house, “we were all okay which is what really mattered and once you get over the initial shock you go into operational mode, there is so much to sort out.” The whole of the roof and first floor had gone but all the outer walls remained, it was a black hole, but the outside footprint of the house survived. The Scowsills settled into a rented house and reviewed their options which were: knock the whole house down and build something completely new, walk away and buy/build another house elsewhere or, and the option they finally decided upon - rebuild the house in the same style but with improvements. “Various factors came into play when we analysed what we wanted. It didn’t feel right to move away, we hadn’t chosen

DRAWING ROOM The new drawing room was actually created before the fire from three small rooms knocked together. The stone fireplace was commissioned from a stone mason
to leave our home, it had been taken away from us. Here was an opportunity to rebuild the same place, which we all loved, but with changes to suit our current lifestyle.” They both made a wish list. “Mine was slightly longer than Jeremy’s!” Julia admits, an architect was enlisted to turn the wish list into reality. The plan was to make the house bigger and to correct certain irritating factors, as Julia explains, “I always felt the corridors were slightly too narrow, so it did not feel as if there was enough breathing space.” They widened the kitchen and the corridors, and they created a wonderfully spacious hall at the front of the house with a striking and grand staircase winding up to the re-built first floor.

More working rooms too, a pantry, utility room and a boot room were built along with another smaller staircase to serve the new ‘wing’ at the far end of the house. The original house had been rather dark with small, leaded light windows. Julia wanted the replacing design, which was classed as a new build and so subject to current regulations on insulation, with sealed glazed units for windows, to be infused with light. One of the most imposing features about this restored house is the abundance of glorious natural oak used for floors, doors and the new windows, now

much larger and framed with the same profiled detailing but glazed with clear glass. “This time around I wanted a more simple, clean lined and uncluttered look whilst at the same time retaining the feel of an Edwin Lutyens arts and crafts house.” Julia also wanted to create an easy transition from room to room, and there to be a comfortable feeling of continuity. She planned her interior schemes to flow naturally, to complement each other in classic, timeless style. Walls, ceilings and woodwork have been painted in soft, pale neutral shades. Employing local companies was something both she and Jeremy were very keen to do. The furniture and accessories are an interesting and eclectic mix of period pieces and elegant contemporary designs. There are beautiful inherited pieces like the Chinese rosewood desk in the drawing room, bleached white by the heat of the fire and lovingly restored by a cabinet maker/

Hurstpierpoint W.I. Centenary Hurstpierpoint Women’s Institute is
celebrating its centenary at a meeting on Wednesday, 6th June. It is one of the oldest W.I.s in the country, having been formed in 1918. It’s first meeting was held in the Parish Room and attracted 55 members. The original aim was to encourage women to become active citizens and to become involved in producing food during the First World War. In addition to providing an interesting forum for local women, Hurstpierpoint W.I. has made an important contribution to village life. For example, soon after the Second World War, a Building Fund was established and Hurstpierpoint W.I. donated £1,000 towards the building of the Village Hall. In 2004 the Village Centre was extended and Hurstpierpoint W.I. was actively involved in funding its refurbishment and donated 200 full sets of crockery and cutlery. Ditchling Film Society
On Thursday, 7th June we will be screening The Square, a darkly amusing but also bracingly honest drama/comedy. Christian (Claes Bang) is a suave, divorced but devoted father of two and the respected curator of a contemporary art museum. His next show called The Square is an installation which invites passers-by to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible human beings. However, Christian cannot always live up to his own high ideals and goes into meltdown after his mobile phone is stolen. The strong cast includes Dominic West, Elisabeth Moss and Terry Notary. Winner of the 2017 Palme D’Or, the film is a knife sharp satire on art, culture and communication in the digital age. Director: Ruben Ostlund, Sweden 2017, 142 mins.

Scaynes Hill Village Open Gardens
Wildlife Conservation Opportunities

Fletching Garden Trail
On Sunday 10th June, 11am-5pm, a range of private gardens in Fletching open their gates. For one day each year, visitors can admire beautiful herbaceous borders, stunning views across National Trust land,

Reasons To Be Cheerful
With two royal events in mind, this summer Cuckfield Museum celebrates Reasons To Be Cheerful – weddings and babies. One of the things that we’ve learnt in putting this display together is that vintage dresses very rarely fit onto modern mannequins. Women were either naturally smaller in the past or pulled their corsets really tight – one way or another a 20 inch waist seems to have been the norm. Another surprise was the number of girls who chose to get married in colours other than white. For example, we have the violet Victorian fringed bustle two-piece worn by a prosperous butcher’s daughter on her wedding day, and a blue crepe dress with elegant embellishment for a wartime bride. For the babies, we also show simple teething toys and pacifiers that have not really changed much over centuries and cherished examples of christening gowns, handed down through generations with only one problem – as well as adults, babies are getting bigger too. Summer Band Concert
The Haywards Heath Action for Children Support Group are arranging a Summer Band Concert which will take place at Haywards Heath Methodist Church, Perrymount Road, RH16 3DN on Saturday, 30th June at 7.30pm. The concert will be given by the Haywards Heath Concert Band and promises to be a most enjoyable evening. The band will play one half of the concert as a brass band, and the other half as a swing band. The band was formed in 1998 but has its roots in the Scout and Guide movements. The Scout and Guide Band goes back to 1974, it was, however, decided in 1998 to form a new band and open up the activity to all, rather than to restrict membership to members of the two movements. Admission to the concert is free with donations invited to Action for Children, who have been caring for children for 148 years. In 2017 the charity helped 370,000 babies, children and families in the UK. Please come and listen to the band, enjoy
some brass and swing band favourites and, at the same time, help to improve the lives of vulnerable children, teenagers, parents and carers.
Pyecombe Church Weekend and Flower Festival
On Saturday June 30th and Sunday 1st July Pyecombe Village puts on its ever-popular annual weekend celebration. The theme of the floral displays this year will be The Great Outdoors. Come to the Church to marvel at our array of stunning displays! The Church will be open from 10.30am – 4.30pm. The Pyecombe Village Choir will set the ball rolling with a selection of their popular repertoire at 11.00am. Teas and cakes will be served in the tea tent and a bar will be selling drinks. You can also enjoy a ploughman’s lunch with a glass of wine in the delightful setting of our beautiful South Downs village. This year, in keeping with our theme, there will be a Scarecrow Competition where people are asked to try their hand at making their own scarecrows. There will be a fancy dress dog competition so bring your pooch and join in with the fun. Due to popular demand, we have invited back the Lewes, Glynde and Beddingham brass band and this time they will play their appealing repertoire on both days during the lunchtimes. A Home from Home From a prestigious outstanding rating to a major national award, Valerie Manor Care Home is seeing in its tenth anniversary year with style. Hanna Prince went along to find out more
S
et in a stunning location at the foot of the South Downs, Valerie Manor feels more like a stately country estate than a care home. This grade two-listed manor house is one of just a few homes in Sussex rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) – and it’s easy to see what sets the familyrun operation apart. I visited on a blustery, rainy weekday, but inside the manor the atmosphere couldn’t be warmer. Beautiful flower displays put together by the residents stand in front of the mullion windows and an ancient plaque commemorates a visit from King Charles II. Owner Zoe Fry and her husband Alan welcome me into a cosy old library dotted with comfortable chairs. “Everyone was so excited and proud that we received our 2nd overall rating of outstanding in 2017,” smiles Zoe. “We have the most brilliant team here and to have that recognised is just amazing.” When the CQC assess the quality of a care home, they rate the offering under five categories: is the service safe, is the service responsive, is it well led, effective and caring? In 2015, Valerie Manor received an outstanding rating for two out of the five key lines of enquiry. By last year, though, that had risen to an impressive four out of five ‘outstanding’ categories.

It isn’t just the CQC that have recognised the home’s commitment to excellence. Valerie Manor has also received multiple awards, most recently winning the Best Independent Care Home of 2017 award at the Care Home Awards. Previous accolades have included Care Home of the Year and Care Team of the Year. This June, the manor has been shortlisted for a further two awards: Best Nursing Care and Best Food, Nutrition and Dining Experience.
It’s clear that the residents play a huge part in the life of Valerie Manor “We’ve recently revolutionised our dining experience,” explains Zoe. “Last year, the residents said that they wanted an improved dining experience, so the chefs set to work meeting with residents and putting together new menus. We redesigned our dining room and renamed it ‘The Warren.’ The residents chose the wallpaper, the furniture and the colour scheme. Nowadays, it’s like going out to eat in a restaurant.” Listening to Zoe and Alan talk, it’s clear that the residents play a huge part in the life of Valerie Manor, making decisions on everything from the décor to the activities on offer. As Alan puts it, “we’re working in the residents’ home, they aren’t living where we work.”
The residents are treated as members of a big family, and many of their own families become part of an extended community as well. This family atmosphere is hugely important to Zoe, who purchased Valerie Manor with support from her parents after she was left disappointed by the care her grandparents received in care homes. “I am a trained nurse and I’ve worked in nursing homes from the age of 13,” she explains. “When my grandparents passed away, my parents offered to invest in a care home for me to run. That was ten years ago – we celebrated our anniversary in January – and we’re very much a family-run business. My dad is the Company Secretary and my mum oversees activities such as exercises from your chair, my sister works in the office one day per week and Alan’s dad does the maintenance and gardening.” This close-knit atmosphere has proved highly attractive to staff. Despite
shortages in nursing across the county, Valerie Manor has a waiting list of registered nurses. Some members of the team have worked alongside Zoe since she purchased the home ten years ago. So what makes this such a popular place to work? “We really look after our staff,” Zoe explains. “We recognise that this can be a stressful job, so we provide counselling to staff who go through difficult situations and we’ve recently made it mandatory for staff to have stress management training. We also take staff out for lots of different events and have fun raising money for charity – this isn’t just a job for the people who work here.” On top of engaged and motivated staff, it’s the beautiful location that makes Valerie Manor special. Set in 1.2 acres of manicured grounds and blossoming fruit trees donated by grateful families, it backs right on to the foothills of the South Downs. Many of the rooms enjoy views of the Downs or the garden. Every summer, residents enjoy regular garden parties and barbecues. They also get plenty of
chance to explore the local area. “We have weekly outings where the residents decide where they want to go,” says Alan. “Many residents get out and about independently, but we also have plenty of visitors, entertainers and activities for those who can’t – a highlight is our bi-monthly three-course family Sunday lunch, which alternates with our evening Rabbit Hole Club where relatives can come to enjoy a lovely buffet.” Residents’ needs vary – some simply want the assurance that assistance is there if they need it, while others receive full nursing care in the purposebuilt nursing wing. Valerie Manor is also proud to have been awarded a platinum award for the care we provide towards the end of someone’s life. Fees depend largely on bedroom size rather than care needs, ranging from a competitive £750 per week up to £1,400 for residential care and Zoe can point families in the right direction for independent advice on care home fees. Children’s Respite Trust Lisa de Silva spoke to Chief Executive Gavin Fisher about the Trust’s new day care centre opening this summer in Uckfield, and how thrilled they are to be able to offer additional and much-needed support to families caring for a disabled child

W
hile family life can be busy and frustrating at times, it’s hard to imagine the added pressures of caring for a disabled child. The Children’s Respite Trust was set up to support such households, “the respite we provide allows these families the chance to do things that we all take for granted,” explains Chief Executive and founder of the Trust, Gavin Fisher. “In most cases parents simply want the opportunity to spend time with their other children, or even just the simple pleasure of taking a long relaxing shower free of responsibilities.” Gavin was first inspired to help families with disabled children at the opening of a sensory garden back in 2010. One parent explained that actually getting into the garden was difficult owing to demand and so he set about helping the family get the statutory help that was available, along with fundraising for a short break in a private respite centre for their disabled child. But as word spread of the positive
From this summer, the centre will welcome the first children for day-care sessions impact this had on the family, more and more people began to ask for his help and the Children’s Respite Trust was born, receiving charitable status in 2011, when fundraising efforts started in earnest. Today, the Trust helps families in three main ways. Firstly, by taking an advocacy role in helping people access any Government support and funding they are entitled to; secondly, by providing direct respite, with carers supporting the family at home and thirdly, by providing day-care facilities at their wonderful new respite centre in Uckfield. Green An attractive village with a strong community feel, Newick offers a rich history in beautiful surroundings. Ruth Lawrence gives us a breakdown of this vibrant neighbourhood

estling in the Low Weald of East Sussex, Newick has grown around the generous village green, which has seen the village evolve over its thousand year history. Although the village predates the Domesday Book, it was not recorded in it possibly because then, the village lay deep in the dense Ashdown Forest. A toll cottage stands at the eastern edge of The Green and the old toll road is now the A272. Newick used to boast a glove factory which was famous for high quality ladies gloves and more recently, the mild climate and soil quality made the village a centre for soft fruit growing, producing blackcurrants and the famous ‘Newick Leveller’ dessert gooseberries. Although the fruit gardens were replaced by housing, there is a weekly opportunity to buy homemade preserves, vegetables, baked goods and eggs at the Newick Country Market, which has been held in the village hall for an hour each Friday since 1974. Handicrafts and ready prepared meat, vegetarian dishes
Most of Newick’s older houses are built of locally made characteristic Sussex stocks bricks and they add to the village’s visual appeal and soups are all on sale; the word is to turn up early as everything sells out fast! There is an eclectic mix of over 30 clubs operating in the village, ranging from amateur dramatics, dancing and quilting to an allotment society and quiz teams. Sport lovers will find playing fields and a large modern sports pavilion with facilities and clubs for badminton, bowls, cricket, football, rugby, tennis and stoolball. Newick Village Hall has been serving the community for 85 years and boasts a large main hall with seating for 240, a licensed bar, large stage, kitchen and digital PA. The Community Centre is centrally located and offers disabled access/facilities and a modern kitchen and, like the Village Hall, is available for hire. It also hosts it’s own festival, the Newick Festival will be held over the weekend of 23rd and 24th June, with a Food Fair on The Green and a Fun Day at King George Recreation Ground. t The Bull on the Green in Newick, chef Mark Thomas Raffan is cooking up a storm. Better known as Tom, the experienced cooking consultant has brought his unique culinary flair to the Sussex pub and B&B, reconnecting with his roots following an illustrious career at home and abroad. Hailing from Forest Row, Tom has worked with the Roux brothers at London’s Le Gavroche and Bray’s Waterside Inn, served as executive chef to King Hussein of Jordan in the Middle East, and held a Michelin star at Gravetye Manor in West Hoathly for 10 years. Now, he’s excited to introduce some seasonal flavours to The Bull’s clientele. “We want to make this a destination with really good, proper cooking,” he says. “We’re hoping to start doing some events, and are going to begin hosting specialised dinners, so the times ahead are quite exciting.” With its old oak beams and exposed rafters, The Bull exudes traditional charm. The pub was refurbished and reopened in December last year, and also boasts a cosy, comfortable seven-bedroom B&B. For Tom, overseeing a pub dining experience was an opportunity to fuse his Michelin experience with quality gastro fare. “It’s different with pubs to fine dining, but we want to combine the two together,” he explains. “We want really good-quality, locally-sourced food, cooked beautifully, which people want to come back and eat, time and time again.” Indeed, meals on the menus range from goats cheese parfait to Morrocan

With the summer season upon us fairs, fetes and festivals are springing up everywhere. Lisa de Silva brings us all the fun of the fair and explores the history of these annual festivities in Sussex
FAIRGROUND I
n a ritual that has endured since the 12th century, every summer weekend towns and villages across Sussex are busy setting up stalls, putting up bunting, making cakes and jam and preparing the village green for the fun and festivities of local fairs, fetes and festivals. Full of community spirit, uniting all ages and classes, our annual village celebrations are a stalwart of the Sussex summer season. Over the years, these traditional events have adapted and
ATTRACTION moved with the times and here we take a closer look at the history and evolution of this engaging feature of our popular culture.
Most fairs held in Sussex can trace their ancestry back to charters granted during Medieval times Most fairs held in Sussex can trace their ancestry back to charters granted during Medieval times, when the creation of a fair by royal charter was widespread. Prior to this, people had still gathered together to trade and enjoy a drink in an informal way, usually on the feast day of the local parish saint. As the people from the
village all came together to celebrate this day, it was natural for the day to develop into a market or celebratory fair. It was also customary for the lord of the manor to collect any taxes on trading that took place. However, following the Norman invasion in 1066, the rights to control these gatherings passed to the King, who then passed them down to his local ‘tenant-in-chief.’ This often led to disputes over who had the right to any sales tax and in these cases a direct appeal would be made to the King. There is evidence of this in the village of Hurstpierpoint which was first granted a charter by King Edward 11 in 1312, to celebrate the patron saint of the village, St Lawrence, by holding an annual fair. At that time, John de Warenne was the chief tenant to benefit

from any trading taxes. But after Lewes Priory and the Bishop of Chichester both laid claim to the money, de Warenne was forced to appeal to the King who found in his favour. One of the oldest royal charters in Sussex was awarded to Battle in 1122, with other villages and towns following shortly afterwards, including Pevensey (1207), Robertsbridge (1225), Eastbourne (1232), East Grinstead (1247), Burwash (1252), Wadhurst (1253), Cuckfield (1255) and Mayfield (1261). The fairs gradually established themselves as an important part of village life and usually lasted several days or even weeks, providing an opportunity to sell goods and services or hire labourers. In many places the fairs developed into specialised events for selling sheep and horses and gradually evolved into agricultural shows, many of which are still held in the county today. Attracted by the crowds, those with an entrepreneurial spirit saw the village fair as an opportunity to make some money and soon side stalls became a regular feature offering pies, cakes and sweets for sale, games of skill and luck and various trinkets and bric-abrac to buy. Entertainment was also on offer and those attending the fair in Medieval Ditchling would have been

treated to the spectacle of wrestling competitions, bear baiting and cockfighting. Over time sword-swallowers, theatrical booths, magicians, puppet and circus shows, along with roundabouts and fairground rides were added to the attractions. The modern travelling fairground, along with many circus companies have their origins in these fairs. The tradition of the village fete probably evolved from these larger fairs. Deriving from the French word for feast or festival, the timing of fete days originally revolved around the agricultural timetable. After the winter months had passed, the soil prepared and the crops planted, there was a
The fairs gradually established themselves as an important part of village life short lull during the early summer before harvesting, which was perfect for taking the day off and having some fun. These days were eagerly anticipated and servants in the larger houses were allowed time off to attend, making the fete a day when the whole village could come together to enjoy the festivities. The focal point was usually the village green and it was a time to show off the best of the community, whether that was growing local produce and flowers, baking cakes and making jams or playing music and country dancing. Often the ladies of the parish made items to be sold at the fete to raise funds for charitable causes and today, many of these community events still include a fundraising element. So, unlike the traditional fair which had its roots in commerce, it is generally acknowledged that fetes were motivated by charity, for the benefit of the community or a specific local cause.
Over the years, the village fete has embraced traditional games such as tug-of-war, hoopla and guess the weight. Villagers have taken donkey and fairground rides, tried their luck on the tombola or played ‘bowling for a pig,’ a skittles-style game where the visitor wins a live piglet. Today dog shows, snail-racing, archery, as well as a game of the Sussex sport of stoolball, are all common features. Arts festivals and open houses are also very popular today, championing art, jewellery, ceramics, wonderful food and drink and even camping and glamping. Whether driven by nostalgia or the opportunity for all generations to come together and enjoy a day out, village fetes, fairs and festivals are thriving. So next time you buy a cake, watch a puppet show or throw the hoopla, spare a thought for your ancestors in whose footsteps you are following and enjoy the festivities. l

Brisk cycling burns around 500 calories per hour and is a low impact activity so it’s kinder to the joints. From longer rides to short spins around the block, getting to work or using a spinning bike in the comfort of your own home, you’ll always get something out of it. To ramp things up a bit, try mountain biking. Cycling up and down hills and out of the saddle is an excellent all-body activity, as you’re constantly shifting your weight, working your arms, abs and core stability. Not to mention improving your lung health in the process. SHIFTING GEAR Apart from the prerequisite roadworthy bike, then you will need the following for basic starters:

A protective helmet. Designed to offer protection at low-speed crashes that don’t involve motor vehicles, wearing a helmet (although not a legal requirement) is reassuring for many. In the first instance, whether riding on a road or a bike path, you should always acquaint yourself with basic safety rules for cycling. Front and rear lights on the bike are absolutely essential if you’re going to ride after dark. They not only make you visible in the gloom, they also illuminate the roads and bike paths. There are so many options on offer. From low-level units for use in well-lit towns to efficient and bright LEDs for dark country roads.

WHERE TO GO Whether it’s the open roads, a cycle track or one of the many velodromes around the UK, there are plenty of places to explore on your bike and especially here in Sussex. FREE WHEELIN’ For those who love cycling, the feeling of freedom you get from the activity is unsurpassed. The fact you are moving forward in travel and often outside, seeing new things and exercising at the same time is a wonderful combination and is brilliant for keeping stress at bay. As Marco, a keen cyclist from Sussex explains, “Cycling is a great life metaphor. When you’re climbing a steep hill and the going gets tough, you want to give up. Then in an instant, it all becomes easier and the wind is at your back and there’s no better feeling.” l

o down any country lane in the UK and particularly our sunny corner of Sussex and you’ll most likely see men and women in all the right gear navigating the roads with intent. But you don’t have to dress like a pro or possess an expensive bike to enjoy the simple act of cycling. Clean, green beauty Forget clean eating – the latest lifestyle movement is green beauty. Hanna Prince tells us how to purify our skincare regimes

he wellness movement has been gathering momentum over the past few years, with a wave of celebs, food bloggers and chefs extolling the virtues of a cleaner, greener lifestyle. Now the beauty industry is catching on - according to a recent survey, 73 per cent of millennial women seek out cleaner products. Brands increasingly carry labels such as ‘natural’, ‘organic’ and ‘botanical’. So how can you make sure that your beauty regime is squeaky clean? LOOK FOR A LOGO The term ‘organic’ is widely used throughout the beauty industry to attract health-conscious consumers – but don’t let yourself be drawn in. Unlike in food marketing, where any product labelled as organic must adhere to strict EU standards, there are no legal requirements for the use of the term on beauty products. That’s why it’s important to check for an independent endorsement, for example The Soil Association logo only appears on

products containing the highest level of certified organic ingredients possible. CHECK THE INGREDIENTS For many of us, turning to a cleaner beauty regime is all about cutting down our contact with potentially harmful chemicals. The only way you can really be sure that your hair and beauty products are free from nasties is to check the label. If you are not sure about an ingredient it’s always worth doing some research; talk to a qualified beautician who will be able

to advise you, and there is a wealth of information online as well. THINK ABOUT PACKAGING It’s important to think about how your beauty products are packaged. A little simple research will help you ascertain the green credentials of a company, from its testing procedures, environmental responsibilities, philosophies and values and of course its ingredients. DON’T PANIC! Purifying your beauty regime is a chance to experiment with a whole range of fun new products and approaches - but don’t feel that you have to ditch your old favourites. By adopting a few clean, green elements and weeding out the most chemicalheavy products, you’ll be reducing your exposure to toxins and benefiting the environment at the same time. CROWHURST TO BATTLE
Walk
Robert Veitch laced up his boots for this month’s walk, marching through the ages, across the landscape of 1066 and this historic corner of the county
L
eaving the wide expanse of Crowhurst Station via the rear of platform 1, follow Station Road downhill, beyond the multitudes of commuter cars for just over one-third of a mile, until the road comes to an end. Cross the road at the T-junction and enter St George’s Church cemetery opposite. Just beyond the glorious giant Oak on the right, is a tree for the ages on the left – The Crowhurst Yew. The knarled and twisted trunk has a beauty of it’s own and it’s quite bewildering to realise this tree was here at the time of William the Conqueror’s invasion. It’s thought it could be around 1,300 years old, possibly planted by the Saxons. King Harold owned the Manor of Crowhurst, which the Normans destroyed prior to the Battle of Hastings. Fortunately the Norman invaders sourced their firewood elsewhere. Beyond the yew, follow the path around the back of the church to the junction with Forewood Lane. Turn left and wander along the path for 200m, turning left again by the metal gate and fingerpost indicating the 1066 walk. The path follows the right side of the field initially, before rolling downhill across the middle, into the gully beyond, as far as the seven-bar gate. Across the field of Rapeseed is a stile, which is the access point into the
RSPB’s Fore Wood Nature Reserve. Follow the route downhill, passing a small pond on the right. The path rolls up and down through the woodland geography, veering right and uphill when timber stacks hove into sight. The musical overtures of miniature modern day descendents of Pteradactyls inhabit the airwaves like an avian orchestra. Walkers who know their birds may be able to spot the Chaffinch, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Marsh Tit, Nuthatch and Redwing that all live here. A small bench on the right appears a few steps before the gate, and bridge over the Powdermill Stream.

Across the field, turn right at the fingerpost, walking around the side of the metal seven-bar gate. From here it’s uphill and around the left hand bend as far as the T-junction. Turn right and follow the track downhill, under the power lines and back across the Powdermill Stream by the small waterfall that lies upstream. Follow the track as it weaves a way through the scenery, a ribbon cutting it’s way through the landscape. The black oast at Peppering Eye is topped with a white cowl and cockerel themed weather vane. Beyond this it’s no more than one-fifth of a mile to the junction with Telham Lane at the end of the track. Turn left onto Telham Lane and walk 100m along the road to the junction with Powdermill Lane. Cross the road with care, aiming for the fingerpost opposite. Up the bank and over the stile, the footpath hugs the edge of the field. At the top of the field, pass through a pair of small metal gates and then down the loose stone path, which becomes packed earth as it flattens out and then begins to clamber uphill. Beyond another couple of gates, grass replaces the earth and the path heads towards a solitary Horse Chestnut on the horizon. Beyond this is a fingerpost where the walk joins the 1066 footpath from Rye to Pevensey.

The path is wide and leads to a gate, beyond which is a red brick wall, speckled with ivy. The wall emerges into civilisation and the historic town of Battle. Continue east, across the entrance to the Abbey Gate House (remembering the Crowhurst Yew is older than everything you can see) towards the quadrant arch. The path follows the ancient boundary wall of the Abbey, along the road towards the mini roundabout. It’s thought that the roundabout marks the point where the course of British history changed with the flight of that apocryphal arrow in October 1066. At the mini roundabout turn right and walk downhill for about 400m, before turning left and bimbling downhill for the final furlong to Battle Station, to complete this march through time. l Whilst Les Campbell is recuperating from an accident, Robert Veitch has taken on the role of being Les’ legs. he first thing that strikes you about Mid Sussex Vets is the location. Peacefully positioned on the rural edges of Wivelsfield, within easy striking distance of Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and the surrounding villages, it’s the kind of relaxed setting calculated to put even the most nervous pets at ease. The practice has occupied the same spacious building since it was founded by Marie Arkell (BVetMed MRCVS) in 2009. The reason I’m visiting today, though, is because there are changes afoot. On top of investing in state-of-the-art digital X-ray equipment, offering advanced keyhole spay procedures and starting work on a purpose-built cat ward, Mid

Sussex Vets has recently taken on a new full-time veterinary surgeon. Alison Bennett (MA VetMB BSc MRCVS) now works alongside Marie to meet an increase in customer demand, driven by the practice’s glowing reputation. “I really like how things work here,” says Alison, as she and Head Nurse Wendy Line (RVN) meet me in the airy waiting room. “The team interact well and we’re given plenty of time in between appointments to work through

difficult cases – which I love, because I’m a perfectionist. We also offer facilities and procedures that many other practices don’t.” “Alison is a fantastic addition to the practice,” says Marie Arkell, “we feel very lucky to have her here. We are excited about the expansion of the practice and the new up to date equipment we now have so we can offer a more enhanced service to our clients and their pets.” One procedure that sets Mid Sussex Vets apart is laparoscopic ovariectomy, otherwise known as ‘keyhole spay’. For dog owners concerned about the invasiveness and recovery time of a traditional spay, this is the perfect answer. “We make two small incisions into the abdomen as opposed to a single large one, and remove the ovaries only,” explains Alison. “The uterus remains in place to sling the bladder forward, so there are fewer problems with urine leakage in older bitches. The recovery is extremely fast because the smaller incisions heal more quickly – most bitches are exercising off the lead again within a week.” Keyhole surgery isn’t the only cutting-edge service that the practice offers. New digital X-ray equipment has replaced the conventional X-ray machine. It offers crystal clear images that can be digitally forwarded instantly to avoid postal hold-ups.
The additional benefit is that no dark-room is needed, allowing the transformation of the existing dark room into a brand new cat ward. “We already have a designated ward for cats, but this is set out completely on its own away from the dog ward so that the cats will feel more relaxed,” explains Wendy. She heads up a team of two full-time and three parttime registered veterinary nurses, who also man the reception desk. “Everyone in the building is qualified, so when customers phone the clinic they get through to someone with a qualification rather than a receptionist,” says Wendy. “We offer a very personalised service here. When you walk in the door, you don’t usually have to say who you are – there’s a family atmosphere.” Despite having expanded from its initial team of one veterinary surgeon and two full-time nurses to two fulltime vets, two full-time nurses, three part-time nurses and a part-time vet, Mid Sussex Vets is still small enough to retain the feel of a friendly local practice. The close-knit team pride themselves on strong communication and customers are generally able to see the same vet on every visit. The services and facilities on offer, however rival much larger clinics. “This is a purpose-built facility, which means that we have a large, airy waiting room and everything is on one
level,” explains Alison. “We provide 24/7 care and have relationships with various specialists in different areas. Our state-of-the-art facilities include an ultrasound machine, electrocautery for haemostasis to stop bleeding in surgery and a camera otoscope that we use for ear issues. And of course our new stateof-the-art digital X-ray.” An important objective for Marie is to improve the health of the area’s pets, so Mid Sussex Vets prides itself on its discount scheme. The Pet Care Plan includes all preventative healthcare, including an initial health check appointment and follow-up health checks every six months,

of life, but most pups of this age can’t go out until their vaccinations are complete. That’s why we thought it was important to offer the classes here.” The classes are open to any puppy registered with Mid Sussex Vets who has had a health check and their first vaccinations. They include an introduction to the scales, the consulting room and a crate, as well as general socialisation. “It can be challenging taking on a puppy, and it really helps to meet people who are in the same situation,” Wendy explains. “These classes offer support for the first few weeks of ownership.” From the puppy classes to a philosophy of case continuity, Mid Sussex Vets is all about making pets and their owners feel comfortable with a personalised, caring approach. It’s a Dog’s Life This month Rolo the Border Terrier embraces alternative healthcare and welcomes in his friend Teddy as a new permanent resident of the home
M
atters of a medical nature have been to the forefront recently. Having spent the winter struggling with my senior arthritis, I’m on some new medication, but this hasn’t stopped ‘Her Indoors’ dabbling in alternative therapies for me. As turmeric tablets are the ‘must have’ herbal remedy of the moment, I get one crushed in my food. So far, all they’ve done is turn my poos a pleasing shade of yellow, but ‘Her Indoors’ is convinced that as they’re expensive they’ve got to be doing me good. I’ve also got a magnetic collar which works on the same principle as the bracelets some people wear. Now I hate to encourage ‘Her Indoors’ as it’s only a short step to ‘eye of newt and toe of frog’, but I do actually think it’s doing some good. The only downside is that if you get too close to the white goods, you risk being secured, like an overlarge fridge magnet. One of the difficulties for pets is that there’s no National Health System. You can, of course, get pet health insurance, and I’ve had this all my life.

It’s what has kept me largely healthy. Still, as it is, the premiums go up nicely as I get older, the list of excluded conditions is long, and there’s a maximum spend for any one condition. When ‘Them Indoors’ had the audacity to try and claim a while ago, the insurance only covered about £100 of the bill, and they put my premiums up, so ‘Him Indoors’ was left muttering darkly and staring at an empty wallet. People just don’t realise how lucky they are!
We would like to give a bark of thanks to all the good people at Maidstone Hospital We did have an occasion recently, where the world of people’s medicine overlapped with the canine. Our foster Border Terrier, Teddy, has been staying with us because his owner has been ill in hospital. A few weeks ago, ‘Her Indoors’ received a phone call to say that her condition had deteriorated
and she was asking for Teddy. I wanted to go too, but ‘Her Indoors’, for some inexplicable reason, didn’t think this was a good idea. She’s no sense of adventure. Anyway, there was an emotional reunion between dog and owner, with Teddy lying on the bed and giving her a good licking. Unfortunately, she passed away the following morning, but ‘Her Indoors’ will never forget that visit and we would like to give a bark of thanks to all the good people at Maidstone Hospital for their compassion under exceptional circumstances. Teddy is staying with us for good now, so ‘Her Indoors’ is taking him to our Vet’s for a check-up and to discuss a little operation that is overdue. I keep telling him not to bark at the dog next door, strut along the fence line, spray mark his territory and dig in the garden, but he’s not listening. All I can say is that anytime soon, he’s going to wake up to find a couple of small body parts have gone missing. Still, if he’s anything like me, it won’t slow him down much and he’ll have the consolation of knowing there will be a bill to pay. Healthcare is a marvellous thing! l

Introduce one young woman with appallingly low self-esteem to an attractive but understandably suicidal quadriplegic, and you have a ticket to a thoroughly engrossing rollercoaster of a ride. Never sentimental, but full of keen insights and some convincing characterisation it doesn’t shy away from the big questions. Louisa finds employment as a carer for Will, who lost everything but the limited use of one arm in a motorcycle accident. Until his accident, educated and athletic
There was a very good television production of this, but the prizewinning book is deeper. It’s a long read, but never boring. Grace is a celebrated murderess although she says she remembers nothing of the crime. It’s based on a true story, set in Canada in 1840, and we know that the real Grace spent the best part of thirty years in asylums and prisons. Her associate, James McDermott, was hanged. Dr Jordan is a psychiatrist hoping to open an asylum of his own and solving the

The picture of someone who took his advantages very much for granted to a person unable to come to terms with his limitations rings very true, although I did feel that the author skirted round some of the difficult aspects of disability. These are conveniently dealt with by Will’s other carer, Nathan, who does the heavy lifting and the medication. From inauspicious beginnings, Louisa and Will’s relationship evolves over a period of six months. Jordan suspects a dual personality which he hopes to reveal through psychoanalysis. You are never sure whether Grace is genuinely disturbed or a consummate liar. Atwood seems able to write in any voice she chooses, and Grace’s rather odd prudishness and her speech patterns sound thoroughly authentic. None of the characters are straightforward, and Grace’s impoverished background and her journey to the New World from Ireland is movingly related by her, without a trace of self-pity.

We’ve reached a time when rather than television using books as jumping-off points, books are using television. The Bake-off programmes have caught the imagination of young and old alike, and this time it’s aimed at pre-school children. The plot follows the progress of Flamie Oliver, a dragon-in-training who is approaching his finals. He much prefers baking to practising his dastardly dragon skills, and his classmates are much better at being terrifying than he
The kidnap is no problem, but finding a sauce to accompany a princess is far trickier is. Heston Blowitall, Scaly Berry and Paul Firewood perform death-defying deeds, but Flamie has spent so much time practising pastry and creating cakes that he is underprepared for his exams. When Flamie fails the lot, he is given one final task – to kidnap a princess and eat her. The kidnap is no problem, but finding a sauce to accompany a princess is far trickier. She is no fool, however, and comes up with a solution to Flamie’s problem which involves lots of baking and masses of colourful illustrations. This is a delightful picture book for the under fives. l

Alfresco Dining Picnic season is upon us – take a break from the usual soggy egg sandwiches with this delicious finger pickin’ chicken and Spanish Tortilla from Gillian Reay-Young. Make ahead of time for ease on the day, then all you have to do is remember the bottle opener! SPANISH TORTILLA Ingredients 6 eggs 3 medium potatoes, peeled and diced 1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 small red pepper, deseeded and finely chopped 50g Chorizo sausage, finely chopped (you can use bacon pieces, if preferred) 2 small mushrooms, thinly sliced 2 tbsp freshly chopped parsley 3 tbsp olive oil 1 Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a non-stick frying pan (I use a 10” base) 2 Add the potatoes and cook for 8-10 minutes until evenly golden brown. 3 Add the rest of the
SESAME FRIED CHICKEN Ingredients 2 large chicken breasts (approx 650g), skinned and cut into bite-sized pieces 2 heaped tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped 1 egg 2 heaped tbsp matzo meal 3 heaped tbsp sesame seeds Black pepper to taste Ricebran oil for deep frying, enough to cover half the chicken, so you can turn over halfway through 1 Mix the egg, rosemary and black pepper together in a bowl. 2 In a separate bowl, combine the matzo meal and sesame seeds. 94 SUSSEX LIVING | June 2018
3 Dip the chicken pieces first in the egg mixture and then roll in the matzo mixture to coat evenly. 4 Heat the oil in a deep frying pan or wok until sizzling. 5 Put the coated chicken pieces into the sizzling hot oil and make sure they are cooked well on both sides to a crisp and golden colour. It only takes 3-4 minutes on each side, depending on size of chicken pieces. 6 Remove from pan and put onto some kitchen roll, shaking off any residue oil. 7 Leave to cool and keep in the fridge until needed. We always have ours with a sweet chilli dipping sauce, which really brings out the flavours. Or for a taste of the Orient substitute the rosemary for Chinese five spice and pair with a hoisin or soy dipping sauce.

Put the remaining tablespoon of oil into the pan to cook the other side of the tortilla, for a further 3 minutes approximately. 7 Let the tortilla cool and then cover and put in the fridge until needed.
