avina has long been a supporter of charity. You’ll probably know her work with Sport Relief; the fighting spirit she showed during ‘Davina – Beyond the Breaking Point’ in 2014 still resonates with many as the then 46-year-old spent a week running, swimming and cycling across the UK. Perhaps less well-known is her longrunning support for children’s charity Action Medical Research which is based in Horsham, West Sussex. The UK-wide organisation raises funds for medical research into a wide variety of illnesses and conditions that affect babies and children. Founded in 1952, it has played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs, starting with the development of the first polio vaccines in the UK, later helping to develop the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and the rubella vaccine. More recently, Action launched its ‘BORN TOO SOON’ campaign which shines a spotlight on premature birth; the devastation caused by premature birth and the complications that can follow and for which Davina is a proud ambassador. Established in London, the charity moved its headquarters from Vincent Square to West Sussex in 1972 and has held a number of local events over the

years including the ‘Trek The Night: South Downs Way’ fundraiser which saw supporters hiking their way from Devil’s Dyke to Beachy Head. “Action is an absolutely amazing charity,” confides the TV star. “I’ve been supporting them ever since my dear Pippy introduced me to them when I was just a little girl.” Jean ‘Pippy’ McCall - who sadly passed away in June 2018 aged 98 – was a chairwoman of a local committee for Action Medical Research in the 1960s. Davina would have been nine years old when she was brought along to her first fundraising event for the charity. Knowing her granddaughter’s fame would help raise the charity’s profile, Davina was brought back into the fold by Pippy again in 2001. “As a mum myself it’s a cause very dear to my heart and I’m so proud to host two annual events here in the south which help raise lots of money for vital research.” ‘Dine with Davina’ is a ladies’ lunch which has been held in Southampton since 2007. Hundreds of guests are given the opportunity to meet Davina before she regales them with anecdotes from the past year. With live music and an auction hosted by Bargain Hunt’s John Cameron, there’s plenty of fun to be had. This year’s event is being

held at St Mary’s stadium on Friday 7 November. Closer to home, ‘Davina’s Big Sussex Bike Ride’ returns every June (this year’s event is on Sunday 16th). The fundraiser has been running for nine years and has so far raised around £320,000. There are three circular routes to choose from which all start and finish near Uckfield in East Sussex. They take in a number of picturesque towns and villages including Golden

It’s a chance to get out in the beautiful Sussex countryside, do something active and help raise money for Action.” Davina is no stranger to fitness of course, having presented a number of hugely successful workout DVDs over the last couple of decades. Since having her three children (Holly, Tilly and Chester) it’s an area of her life which she enjoys focusing on. Later this year she hopes to complete her qualifications to become a personal trainer. “For me it’s so much more about my own personal health rather than a vanity project. I’m at the stage of my life where I’m thinking about things like heart disease, cholesterol, blood pressure… I enjoy keeping active but I enjoy the benefits more and that’s why it’s fab to host an event like the Big Sussex Bike Ride for Action.” l

met Jonathan at his premises in Haywards Heath. Last year alone the firm tripled its turnover and the team has grown accordingly. The firm believes it is well placed to now increase this rate of development even further. A significant driver of Jonathan’s success has been his use of social media, however Jonathan sees the firm’s website as the main platform for further growth. By publishing useful legal content on its blog, The Jonathan Lea Network website now attracts over 250,000 unique visitors per year. This traffic results in a constant stream of highly qualified leads and has enabled the firm to grow a national and international client base. Jonathan plans to not only build the retained team in Haywards Heath, but also to develop a significant network of self-employed solicitors with different specialisms who can take advantage of modern technologies to work remotely as contractors of the firm. Already, his
firm regularly works with a Montreal based UK qualified intellectual property lawyer. Jonathan also intends to further exploit the success of the website by shortly adding e-commerce functionality whereby visitors will be able to pay to download certain legal templates and guidelines.
Jonathan is utterly committed to the firm’s clients and growing a sizeable market leading business in Sussex The firm focuses on advising many start-ups. Within this niche, they have earned a reputation as experts on the UK government SEIS and EIS tax relief schemes which are aimed at encouraging wealthy individuals to invest in young businesses. This year alone the firm has so far acted for almost 30 companies in successfully applying for HMRC advance assurance whereby the government confirms that a company meets the SEIS and EIS qualifying criteria. Aside from their start-up work, other examples of the firm’s recent deals include advising a local entrepreneur on the purchase of a Mid Sussex golf
club, the sellers of a 70 year old Sloane Square based property investment company that sold for several million, the French founders of a London burger business on an investment by a Saudi family office and the board of a publicly listed software company on its various commercial contracts. Jonathan himself grew up in Sussex and after graduating from Bristol University he trained with the pre-eminent international City firm Clyde & Co. He worked as a corporate solicitor for five years in London before joining a regional firm in Cornwall. Now that he is back and settled in Sussex, Jonathan’s ambition is to create a highly trusted, enduring legal brand. Jonathan is utterly committed to the firm’s clients and his far-reaching vision of developing his team further and growing a sizeable market leading business in Sussex. l The Jonathan Lea Network Basepoint Business Centre, John de Mierre House, Bridge Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex RH16 1UA 01444 708640 wewillhelp@jonathanlea.net www.jonathanlea.net June 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 13

COMMUNITY
New Life After a 10 year hiatus the Worlds End Duck Fair is returning on Saturday 13th July, brought back to life by Karen Williams. Ruth Lawrence went to meet her
K
aren Williams was born and raised in Worlds End in Burgess Hill. Her childhood memories of the Duck Fair, which was instigated as a fundraising event by 5th Burgess Hill Scouts in 1968 are of it being “lots of fun” and “getting dressed in fancy dress,” every girl’s dream! Now, marking its 51st anniversary, Karen is bringing the Duck Fair back, ten years after its last incarnation, with the help of 7th Burgess Hill Scouts. She was inspired by telling her eight-year-old granddaughter about the good times she enjoyed all those decades ago. Karen is passionate about bringing the community together and this is her primary reason for organising the Fair which will be held on the 13th July from 11-5pm on Worlds End Recreation Ground. All profits from the day will go to St Peter & St James Hospice and any local charity can have a free stall for the day. The Mid Sussex Marching Band will start off the day followed by demonstrations of gymnastics and judo; there will be live music, a dog show, including the ‘cutest dog’ and ‘dog most like their owner’ categories and the Burgess Hill Bake Off (Karen is seeking under 12s who can bake to take part). Kids have their own fancy dress contest and a dress your own scooter competition. There will be a beer tent, plant stalls, a mini funfair and food stalls; in all, the fair will be a fabulous day out for the entire family. The Tug of War contest is still in search of teams and Karen is looking for volunteers for tea making and manning stalls. For transport enthusiasts, classic cars

Munchies in Valebridge Road and any questions can be emailed to Karen at the address below. The Duck Fair’s rebirth is a reminder of how one person’s actions can bring a community together; Karen’s family has lived in Worlds End since Queen Victoria’s reign and she is determined to retain something of the cohesive community that she remembers during her childhood. She recalls it being “a happy little village with 18 shops” all of which she was sent out to with a shopping list while still a young girl. July’s event will be a timely reminder of days when community was of paramount importance and Karen’s hard work will ensure a wonderful day for local people to enjoy what really matters and have fun together. l 07966 436469 munchkas@aol.com
and motorbikes will be on show and animal lovers will be able to see reptiles displayed throughout the day. People are welcome to bring anything interesting along on the day; one man is apparently bringing a penny farthing along to show people how our ancestors travelled in days gone by. If anyone has old china they don’t need any more, Karen can use it for the Scouts’ crockery smash and the cake stall is seeking donations of cakes. Any donations can be dropped off at

HEALTH
ARE YOU MAN ENOUGH? It’s time to talk frankly about the prostate with Roger Bacon from Prostate Cancer Support Organisation. If you are worried about yours come and get a free PSA test this June
O
ne in every two men will have a health problem with their prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an infection, enlargement or cancer. one in every eight men will develop prostate cancer and those of African-Caribbean origin and those with a family history of the disease are two to three times more at risk. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate, entering the blood. It is not a direct test for cancer, rather a moderately raised reading that can be an indicator of a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Without screening, around 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. It is now the leading cancer found in men. Around 11,800 men die of this disease annually, one every 45 minutes. Caught in the early stages, cure rates are dramatically improved with over 80% success. General symptoms of problems with the prostate are frequent need to urinate especially at night; bursting to urinate, slow flow, difficult, painful; stop/start and dribbling, or blood in the urine. Sponsored by Mark Masonry of Sussex, the charity PCaSO (Prostate Cancer Support Organisation) is offering free PSA testing for men aged between 45 and 80 on 29th June 2019 at the Normandy Masonic Centre, Denne Road, Horsham RH12 1JF. We are also testing in Burgess Hill on 12th October and East Grinstead on 23rd November. l It is essential to book an appointment time – this can be done online at www.psatesting.org or for booking enquiries phone 0845 650 2555

CAMPING
CARRY ON…
Camping! N
othing beats relaxing around the campfire, sleeping out under the stars and waking up to birdsong, so it’s no surprise to learn that over 15 million camping and caravanning trips were made in the UK last year (Mintel). Whether it’s the sense of freedom and adventure or the chance to unplug from the digital world and embrace the countryside, there is a growing trend for this type of holiday. Camping gear has been given a stylish makeover by some top designers; retro camper vans are commanding huge prices, while popular music festivals, along with camping celebrities including Kate Moss and Sienna Miller are driving the luxury glamping end of the market. Here we’ve outlined both the information and inspiration to help you get the most out of a camping or camper van trip this summer.
It’s time to dust down the canvas, polish up the chrome and head out under the stars! Whether you like to wild camp or glamp it, read on for some camping and camper van inspiration from Lisa de Silva CAMPING Offering superb value for money, a chance to discover the great British countryside and make new friends, camping is an excellent pastime for families and couples alike. Campers can be as active or relaxed as they wish, enjoy the fun of cooking outdoors and watch the sunrise and set amid beautiful surroundings. The community spirit among fellow
campers is legendary and children love the freedom to explore and play with new pals. For those who associate a camping holiday with roughing it, think again. New products and upgraded camping sites can ensure you stay clean, comfortable and well-catered for in all weather conditions. While for some the attraction of ‘wild’ camping is to enjoy as natural experience as possible, for those looking for high-end facilities many campsites now offer deluxe shower blocks, electrical hook ups, Wi-Fi, play areas and restaurants. Think about the type of experience you’d most enjoy and research suitable sites but do book well in advance as the most popular campsites book up fast. CHOOSING A TENT Camping does not need lots of expensive equipment and a basic June 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 17

glamping. Invest in air mattresses and take proper bedding for a great night’s sleep, while solar powered fairy lights and candle-lit lanterns will add atmosphere and charm. Inside the tent a small bedside table, inflatable chairs, a solar-powered portable speaker and a large mirror will all add style and comfort. Outside, set up table and chairs, an outdoor rug and portable hammock to create that deluxe feel. Another idea is to take indulgent food and premium snacks and if you love your morning coffee, a cafetiere is definitely worth packing.
starter tent, sleeping bag and portable cooking stove is all you really need. When choosing a tent think about head height and the space needed for both sleeping and living. As a rule of thumb 4-berth tents work well for couples, while larger tents with separate sleeping compartments will suit families. Size does matter as the larger the tent, the heavier and more difficult it can be to erect and larger tents can incur increased pitch fees. So consider getting an extension in the form of a canopy which can double the size of a tent and create a useful shady space for cooking and relaxing. When it comes to tent shapes, there is an enormous choice including dome, tunnel, bell and tipi, while many of the largest tents have a central living area with several sleeping pods radiating off the main room. For head height, a tunnel tent offers good vertical space and for fast pitching opt for an instant
pitch tent, although these are not particularly robust and best used for festivals and children’s play tents. FROM CAMPING TO GLAMPING Once you’ve chosen a tent, it is easy to add a few indulgent extras to elevate your camping trip to more luxurious
FOLDING CAMPERS AND TRAILER TENTS Cheaper than a camper van, but easier to tow than a caravan, folding campers and tent trailers can offer a good alternative for those looking to bridge the gap between the fun of canvas and the home comforts of a camper van. A folding camper is a trailer that offers a caravan-style layout once erected. All the accommodation is off the ground, they are quick and easy to erect and usually offer a higher standard of equipment than a trailer tent. While they are more expensive than a trailer tent, they are just as easy to tow and store when not in use. Alternatively, a trailer tent can best be described as a tent that pulls out from a trailer which is pegged into the ground around it, with the trailer forming an off the ground bedroom area. Typically, they are smaller and lighter than a folding camper. Factors to consider if you are researching either of these options are

whether your car is capable of towing the trailer, where you will keep it when not in use and the need for maintenance. On the plus side, neither incur an additional road tax or require a special driving license, although ferry crossings will cost more with a trailer. When buying, make a list of both essential and desirable equipment and do try pitching and taking down the unit yourself. If buying second hand, check the tyre condition, hitching apparatus, brakes, lighting and any damage to hinges, locks and bodywork. You will also need an illuminated number plate to match your registration number and to inform both your insurance company and breakdown recovery service that you will be towing a trailer. CAMPER VANS & MOTORHOMES If you enjoy the freedom of the open road and love the idea of jumping in a vehicle set up with all your home comforts for endless adventures, a camper van or motorhome could be for you. A brilliant way to stretch out your weekends and help achieve a great work/life balance, a camper van saves you time and money and can be adapted to meet your specific needs with comfortable beds, lighting, cooking and en suite facilities. Fun
The community spirit among fellow campers is legendary and children love the freedom to explore to drive, they are also much easier to park than trailers and towing caravans. What’s more, you will find you develop an easy bond with other owners and become part of a community of kindred spirits keen to swap tips and advice. Before searching for a suitable vehicle to buy or convert yourself, consider how often you will use a van, as if it amounts to around six weeks a
year or less, it is probably more cost effective to rent one. In terms of size the smaller the van, the easier it is to drive and park, not to mention cheaper fuel costs. Also consider head height. If you will be making long trips, a hightop van will feel more spacious but can cause height barrier issues in certain car parks and may mean it does not fit into your garage for safe storage. An alternative is a pop-top which is easy to put up and saves money on fuel consumption. Other factors to consider include whether you require a toilet and shower which would necessitate a water tank and heating system; whether there is a rear rack and awning for storing bikes;

whether you want pull-out or fixed beds and the type and size of the kitchen facilities. If buying second hand, do have a habitation check by an approved specialist to check the water and gas systems, pumps and filters, seals, ventilation and fire safety equipment. Expect to pay a premium for an iconic retro camper van, which not only look cool but hold their value and can even increase in value over time. It may even earn its own keep with many owners renting theirs out for weddings, films and photographic shoots.
If you like the idea of a camper van but want a real home from home, a motorhome or RV will appeal. These vehicles have a separate driving cab and large self-contained living quarters offering high-spec lounge areas with TVs and sound systems, contemporarystyle kitchens and dining areas, deluxe bathrooms and modern bedrooms. Many can also tow or accommodate a small car. In fact, a well-equipped motorhome can make a practical home and on the road office for those who enjoy living life on the road. l
Consider how often you will use a van; six weeks or less it’s probably more cost effective to rent one

OPEN YOUR EYES!
Vision correction while you sleep is now a reality, and readily available at Hassocks Eyecare Centre. Lisa de Silva spoke to owner Vicki Macken about the revolutionary Orthokeratology
W
ould you like the freedom to enjoy life without the need for glasses or contact lenses? While almost 70% of UK adults need corrective eyewear, the good news is that whether you are short-sighted, long-sighted or have astigmatism, there is now a wide range of options to live life free from prescription eyewear. Hassocks Eyecare Centre is at the forefront of these developments and explain the options for those who don’t want to wear eyewear.
and reading glasses and is similar to cataract surgery. The eye’s natural crystalline lens is removed and replaced with a high-performance lens implant designed to correct your vision. What’s more, it ensures there will be no need for cataract surgery in later life.
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) – Vision Correction While You Sleep
Safe and effective, orthokeratology is perfect for those with mild to moderate short-sightedness. This non-invasive process involves wearing overnight contact lenses which gently re-shape the curvature of the eye creating a flatter cornea, resulting in clear natural vision the following day with no need for corrective eyewear. Great for those with an active lifestyle and those with dry eyes unable to tolerate contact lenses.
Reducing the Progression of Myopia in Children
Laser Surgery – Permanent Vision Correction
For those over 21 years old with a stable prescription, laser surgery offers accurate and corrective surgery for short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism and over the past 30 years, 40 million people worldwide have been successfully treated. The laser gently and permanently re-shapes the cornea to correct the prescription along with any abnormalities. Implantable Contact Lenses – Reversible Vision Correction
If laser surgery is not appropriate, an implantable contact lens offers an alternative solution. Able to treat a higher range of correction than laser surgery, the procedure involves the implantation of microthin lenses behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. The process is reversible and has a rapid recovery time.
Natural or Clear Lens Extraction – Permanent Vision Correction
Clear lens extraction is designed to reduce or eliminate the need for distance
It is estimated that 30% of children in Europe will develop myopia requiring prescription eyewear. Controlling the progress of myopia is particularly important in childhood as it can lead to macular degeneration and glaucoma in later life. Hassocks Eyecare Centre offer two options for myopia management in children: Orthokeratology which can reduce the progress of myopia and allow children to enjoy an active lifestyle free of eyewear during the day and MiSight, daily disposable contact lenses designed to correct existing myopia while helping to minimise its progress. With the latest state-of-theart equipment, high levels of professionalism and enviable service levels, Hassocks Eyecare Centre are perfectly placed to help you live without the need for corrective eyewear and are the only local opticians to offer Orthokeratology. l Hassocks Eyecare Centre 17 Keymer Road, Hassocks, West Sussex BN6 8AD 01273 843946 info@hassockseyecare.co.uk www.hassockseyecare.co.uk June 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 25

CENTENARIANS
THE SECRET TO In 1985 just 0.006% of the UK population lived to 100 years of age. By 2015 that figure had risen to 0.2% – that’s over 14,500 people. Lisa de Silva and Robert Veitch recently met four local centenarians
longevity
DAME VERA LYNN Born in East Ham, London in 1917, forces’ sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn celebrated her 102nd birthday in March. Famous for giving outdoor concerts to the troops during the Second World War singing songs that included, We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover, she has enjoyed a long and illustrious musical career. In 2009, aged 92 years Dame Vera released a compilation album, becoming the oldest living artist to reach the top of the UK Albums Chart. Even more impressive, she released an album in her centennial year that reached number three, making her the first centenarian to have a chart album. Dame Vera has lived in the village of Ditchling since the 1960s. She is still held in much affection

by the war veterans she sang for and remains involved in her extensive charity work. In 2001, she established the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity in Cuckfield to support under 5s with motor learning impairments, including cerebral palsy and at 102 years old remains a passionate President. I asked Dame Vera for her advice on leading a long and happy life: “I have said it many times before, but ‘keep smiling through’. Whatever life brings, it is so important to remain positive and persevere no matter what. It was that fighting spirit that got us through the War, and I think it applies to everyday life just as much.” As a young woman Dame Vera relished the opportunity to travel to war zones to entertain the troops. “Our brave boys were out there fighting for our freedom and going to entertain them and bring a piece of home to the front line was really the least that I could do.” Even today she receives letters from some of the veterans she sang to and is always thrilled to hear their news. Over her 102-year lifespan Dame Vera has seen many changes particularly in technological advances and while she acknowledges the benefits of modern technology, feels that many
people have lost sight of the simple pleasures in life, such as chatting together and spending time in the community. It was the desire to live in a small village within a close-knit community that prompted her move to Ditchling, “I was attracted by the small village life. There is a real sense of community spirit and camaraderie.” While her performing days are over, singing along to music is still a source of great joy. Her top tips for maintaining a positive outlook? “I think it’s always important to count your blessings, and
I am always mindful that I have a lot to be grateful for. I also enjoy looking out at the nature in my garden and reading a good book.” SYLVIA MITCHELL-CORDELL Born in May 1914 just before the start of the First World War, Sylvia Mitchell-Cordell has just celebrated her 105th birthday. Remarkably she lived independently in Haywards Heath until last January, when she moved to a care home in the same town. On first

Sylvia, or Ginge as she was known on account of her auburn hair, also kept herself in shape and could still touch her toes in her 90s, “I did my exercises every morning. That was a good thing,” she laughs. Family, community and taking pleasure in nature, hobbies and the simple life has clearly helped Sylvia to reach such an impressive age and long may it continue.
meeting Sylvia and her son Jerry, I was immediately struck by her delightful spirit and charm. “I’m mostly happy. I like seeing people enjoying themselves and I very much love the garden,” she tells me. Sylvia grew up in East London with four sisters. The family shared holidays and Sunday lunches with extended family who all lived nearby and perhaps it was this sense of community that laid the foundations for Sylvia’s long and happy life. “We had such good parents

ALFRED ‘ROBBIE’ ROBINSON Reaching the grand old age of 103 years old is no mean achievement but according to Alfred ‘Robbie’ Robinson a pint helps along the way, “I like a drink of Guinness,” he chuckles when we meet at his Cuckfield care home. Born during WWI on 23rd August 1915, in Luton, Robbie was an only child who loved reading adventure stories. When WWII broke out, it was Robbie’s turn to have some adventures of his own and he joined the RAF, training as a flight navigator. After the war he went back with friends to set up a transport company. They converted a landing craft and set out across the Mediterranean. In the Bay of Biscay they hit a storm, their boat started taking on water, broke up and sank. A ship came to their rescue but sadly some friends drowned. Robbie returned to England and worked at Blackbushe Airport, where he met his wife Rosemary. He remained in the airline industry until retirement. The family settled in Sandhurst, Berkshire and his children are regular visitors to his care home. When asked the secret to a long and happy life, Robbie’s humour shines through when he tells me it’s all down to “lots of travel, good food, and red wine!” HERTA STANTON 102-year old Herta Stanton greeted me with a smile when I met her at her care home in Crowborough. “I was born in 1917, in Vienna, into a Jewish family with two brothers and a sister,” she tells me. It was a normal family life, until the Anschluss in March 1938, and Kristallnacht in November 1938. Herta escaped on the first Kindertransport train from Vienna
People, who forget history, tend to repeat it on 10th December 1938. “My suitcase contained all my worldly goods. I wore a straw hat with a velvet ribbon. I fled Hitler,” she recalled with a stoic firmness in her voice reliving the pain of separation. “I travelled to Crawley
and became an au pair, but I didn’t like it. I learnt English in four months, then left. I moved to Pembroke Crescent in Hove.” “I met my Chessi at a dance in Croydon, he was a humble Polish soldier. Chessi had escaped three times from a Dutch POW camp, eventually arriving in England. He joined the British 8th Army, and fought at Monte Cassino.” Post War, Chessi anglicised his surname, and the newlyweds settled in Croydon. “I taught dressmaking and German. We had a son, Martin.” “I returned to Vienna in 1964.” Ironically it was by train. “It really was quite something to go back. I’ve been back several times since. I was invited to the Kindertransport 60th anniversary celebration at Clarence House and met Prince Charles and Camilla.” “We were married for 64 years, until Chessi died in 2012. I live in Crowborough now. My carers do a very special job, talking, singing, listening and helping.” “I like talking to people, that’s my secret to a long life. Its nice to be important, but it’s important to be nice.” And most prophetically, “People, who forget history, tend to repeat it.”l

Padel matches are similar to tennis and with the same ball but played with a stringless racket (much like oversized ping pong paddles). Apart from this the scoring methods are exactly the same as in a tennis match. Padel games start with serves that are done underarm and must be played at or below waist level – making it an

LOCAL WALK
SEVEN HILLS FROM HASSOCKS
WALK
Our first day-walk for the summer is here and it’s for those that like a challenge. Resident rambler Robert Veitch took Lucy Sayers for an epic downland walk over seven summits, which she might never forget
L
eaving Hassocks Station, head down beneath the railway bridge. Cross the road, and walk up the steps between two brick columns, then south, alongside the railway. Cross the railway at the angled bridge, then keep left and continue as far as the road. Turn left and continue south, before turning right into New Way Lane. Just over ½ mile later, take the path by the fingerpost, where the road turns 90° right. The path soon turns left and enters the woods by the sign for Wolstonbury Hill. Bear right at the post, and left by the decapitated tree trunk, then uphill to the left of the handrail. After the stile, “It’s like the north face of the Eiger,” remarked Lucy, as the path skyrockets straight for the summit at 206m (676ft). The view is worth the effort. Continue south, ambling downhill towards the stile. Turn right and follow the chalk path downhill, through the double gates. Bear left, where the path splits, walking parallel to the fence and then go through the gate. Turn left, ignore the kissing gate on the right, and continue wandering along between the hedges. The path joins a track at Chantry Farm and becomes Pyecombe Street as the sound of traffic increases. Cross the A23 via the footbridge, then go straight on at the fingerpost, through two sets of gates to Newtimber Hill. At
Hill at 192m (630ft). The summit is a mound to the right of the path. The views in every direction are utterly enchanting. Continue downhill towards the Saddlescombe valley. Once over the stile, follow the path to the metal gate and then the road. Across the road is a yellow tipped fingerpost, then a stile, leading to a narrow tarmac road. Before the tarmac dips down towards the gate, peel right towards the stile. 150m after the stile take the gate on the left, descending with care down the short steep route to the valley floor. Turn right by the muddy pool, then left at the fingerpost shortly after. The muddy pool evolves into a pretty pond. Skip across the dam, then over the stile, before turning right and following the field boundary to the gate, which leads to the road.
The views in every direction are utterly enchanting the 3-way fingerpost, bear slightly right, between the hedge lines and stock proof fence and continue to the gate, then through the Hawthorn trees to the fingerpost. Turn left, then right almost immediately, following the gorse to the gate. Beyond this, it’s straight on, a gentle trot between the Oaks to the summit at 204m (669 ft) where the views are a delight. The path arcs left, dipping into a col, preceding the easy climb of North

Turn left and uphill, then 150m later turn left into Dyke Lane. Enjoy the gentle calm and pleasant surface underfoot, because it’s about to get vertical. Bear right at the Devil’s Dyke sign then left at the fingerpost. Lucy saw the steps and joked, “It’s the stairway to heaven.” There are 189 steps to the gate, then 67 more before the downland opens up. “That’s more like the highway to hell,” gasped Lucy as we paused to get our breath back. Ramble across the scarp slope for 350m. Turn left and uphill at the fork where the nimble feet of a mountain goat will be a bonus on the short squirt to the stile. Bear right, the car park and telescope are just over the brow. Follow the road around to the left (for summit baggers the trig point at 217m (712ft) is off to the right), then south across the head of the dyke. Turn left at the 4-way fingerpost and join the South Downs Way. The flint path betwixt grass and scrub eases downhill for a mile, through an open gate, past the car park and covered reservoir, to a gate, then the road. Cross over and pass through the metal gate from earlier on. Keep right then wander along the asphalt, between the buildings to the gate. Follow the South Downs Way up West Hill to the stile. The summit 211m (692ft) is the line of gorse in the field to the left.

There are 189 steps to the gate, then 67 more before the downland opens up Wander downhill, its easy walking for a mile to the gate. The tarmac of Haresdean Lane turns 90° left, running parallel to the A23. Turn right, cross the A23, then turn right by the raised flower beds made from railway sleepers. The ascent of Church Hill 110m (361ft) is swift, ending at Pyecombe Church of the Transfiguration. Amble down School Lane, before following the path north, alongside the A273 for 150m. Across the main road, bear left at the top of the drive onto Clayton Hill. It’s just over ½ a mile to the crossroads at the golf course periphery. Go straight on. The path turns left, passes through a gate, and turns right at the t-junction. Immediately preceding the summit marked by Keymer Post at 234m (768ft) take the gate on the left. It’s the highest point of the day and time for a last look west at those earlier achievements. The path down this northerly spur in the Downs passes old lime pits about half way down. Turn left at the 3-way fingerpost, continuing downhill to Underhill Lane. Turn left and walk for ½ mile, before the lane turns sharp right, then
50m later, turn right into Spring Lane. Continue all the way to the woods, where a picket fence and linear pond border the left side. Across the road and cattle grid, follow the track to the stream. Over the stile and up the slope, veer right across the meadow, over the boardwalk to rejoin the path back to Hassocks Station. “It’s a walk of monuments,” summed up Lucy, “tough but very, very rewarding. I’ll sleep well tonight.” l

LOCATION
Life in the Row A vibrant village, loads to do and see, a beautiful location and a proactive community all give Forest Row its unique charm and special atmosphere, as Ruth Lawrence discovered when she went for a visit
N
estled in the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, Forest Row is a vibrant and unique village. It has a reputation for attracting open minded people and consequently the village boasts an enormous range of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants to serve all your needs from fashion to food to fun. You can easily stop for a decent cup of coffee or a drink, delicious food and find loads of things to do. Proactive community groups offer numerous opportunities to participate in sports, health and fitness activities; music and the performing arts; live entertainment; films; festivals; and a huge array of spiritual, alternative and holistic activities, all of which flourish in this vibrant and artistic village. Forest Row has the perfect location, adjacent to the Ashdown Forest which is a mecca for walkers, bird watchers, horse riders and dog walkers, with easy connections to larger surrounding towns with train lines nearby. No wonder it is such a sought after location for families to settle down in, plus it is also home to a combination of wellregarded state and independent schools, attracting families from far and wide.

The village boasts an enormous range of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants Forest Row became a Transition Village 12 years ago and embraces organic and biodynamic farming within its community. I went to meet Peter Brown, a biodynamic farmer who explained how people are responding positively to the surprising results of this little understood system that works in harmony with Nature’s principles. Peter has been farming this way his entire working life and has noticed that people are gradually starting to realise that a completely sustainable farming system is possible and a farm can be fertile without inputs of chemicals, fertilisers and harmful practices. The main concept of biodynamic farming is that the farm is an organism that is alive and responsive. A natural cycle of life creating the matter that grows and lives in, and on the soil. For a culture that values science above all else, biodynamics can be hard to explain but as science now knows that our mind can influence and alter our genetic code, it is recognised that consciousness can regulate matter. Many farmers and growers are starting to apply biodynamic principles without completely understanding them because the results are so persuasive. Biodynamic wines are becoming increasingly popular because wine

experts have a high sensitivity to a wine’s quality and can taste the difference and now, people are discovering that biodynamic food is superior in flavour and production over mass produced alternatives.
The Ashdown Forest is a mecca for walkers, bird watchers, horse riders and dog walkers All fertility on a biodynamic farm has to come from the farm; a practice called ‘mob grazing’ builds up soil fertility by putting cattle on small areas of mature grass, half of which they eat and half they tread down, which encourages organic matter to build up in the soil. The soil must be alive to work at its best and working with nature as opposed to against it ensures that the farm exists in balance rather than something that needs to be propped up with increasing applications of fertiliser. A biodynamic farm is seen as a complete organism like the human body. Different organs such as fields, animals, gardens, orchards, woodland
The Ashdown Forest
Peter Brown with the cattle
etc. have to have the right relationship to one another just as the organs in a human body do. If this harmonious relationship is not created or sustained, the organism will fall ill, which is what is happening on so many farms today. In attempting to balance
the biodynamic farm by rearing the right amount of animals to provide fertility for the crops, those crops feed the animals and people who depend upon them. No fertilisers are brought in, no medication used unless to save a life and no feeds are purchased unless they originate from a local biodynamic farm. The aim is to create the right conditions to ensure soil, plants and animals are healthy so that herbicides, pesticides and fertilisers are unnecessary. The largest obstacles to biodynamic farming are that they are more labour

intensive and this means that prices are higher for the customer. Ultimately it is a choice between healthy food produced in a sustainable way and cheap food which, if all factors are considered, could be thought of as more expensive in detrimental effects upon wellbeing and health. Where quality is more easily recognised, such as with wines, cheeses and coffee, people can readily taste the difference and become more aware and interested in biodynamic produce. Declines in food quality since the industrial revolution have seen increases in physical and mental illnesses, allergies and depression and a much higher increase in medication and food supplements. Biodynamic food is so full of vitality that it renders supplements unnecessary in the same way that healthy, balanced soil does not require inputs of fertiliser and chemicals. Other obvious benefits include the fact that far less energy is used to produce the food and it remains mostly local and doesn’t pollute the environment. As I talked with Peter, we visited the small herd of cattle, who retain their natural horns as cow horn is an intrinsic part of the way biodynamic compost is produced. It was a joy to see such natural looking animals grazing contentedly; the pigs seemed even happier, the piglets galloping
Holy Trinity Church
over to investigate us, all living free in large sections of field, alongside their mothers. Not surprisingly, wildlife flourishes on a biodynamic farm; the lack of pesticides means plentiful insect life and wildflowers. Barn owls hunt across the land Peter cares for and the full hedges are ideal habitats for songbirds. Biodynamic farming recognises that human beings are part of the process, not separate or superior from the land they care for. The farmer is the ‘consciousness’ of the farm and has the role of making sure that balance is maintained and the whole farm organism works holistically.

Peter is in the process of building a straw bale house in which to enjoy his retirement; again, the principles that make biodynamic farming such a low impact, holistic way to produce food, mean that his new home has used mostly local materials in its construction and will be self sustaining and energy efficient. The building, which is nearing completion, looks beautiful, with natural curves and colours allowing it to blend in with the environment beyond the windows. It sits at ease in Forest Row, a welcoming community, open to new ideas and sustainable thinking. l Forestrow.gov.uk

With a new pool, top notch fitness equipment, classes and a buzzing social hub, Acorns Health and Leisure Club is truly fighting fit. Michael Hough and Mary Franck chatted to Ruth Lawrence
M
ichael Hough and Mary Franck saw so much potential in Copthorne’s established leisure facility that they took the step from being members to owners and launched Acorns Health Club just three years ago. In that time they’ve invested a substantial sum across all facilities and most importantly focused their attention on the social aspect of the club, turning it into a genuine hub where members can keep fit, eat, drink and socialise under one roof. It’s a multi faceted club, incorporating a gymnasium, three squash courts, a stunning, newly built swimming pool, sauna, steam room and outdoor tennis courts. Add to this full screen Sky Sports and BT Sports, a well stocked bar, restaurant, beautician, sports physio and an all day crèche and you can see why this club is extremely popular with its 1500 members. The membership to class ratio is higher than virtually any other club with sixty classes per week, ranging from body pump, yoga, spin and water aerobics to kids street dance, Pilates, cardio tennis, Boxfit and Zumba.
I assumed that this amount of choice would come with a hefty price tag but astoundingly, the all inclusive membership works out at only £38 per month, ( just over a pound a day with a twelve month contract). The club began back in 1979 as one of the South East’s premier squash clubs and some of the original members still belong. After ownership changes meant that the personal touch was gradually lost, Michael and Mary realised if they bought the club they could re-ignite those hard to define qualities and carry out continual re-investment to make it a place people would feel at home while taking advantage of the state of the art facilities. Members can chat and drink at the bar, enjoy the quiz night, watch big screen football together and sample the comprehensive menu. Four

There are a wide range of teams in the county leagues and an active junior squash development program to give your kids a break from their screens! All staff strive to learn individual members preferences, which make the club feel more like a big family than simply a place to exercise. The pool has just had a seven month refurbishment and looks out across the club’s garden, which is currently being redesigned to be in keeping with the pool theme. Unobtrusive mood lighting, skylights and porthole windows work together to stunning effect and a gorgeous tiled steam room overlooks the water. Being active is the key to physical and mental health, but Michael and Mary have gone one step further by making this a place that nourishes the soul as well as mind and body. l Acorns Health & Leisure Copthorne Road, Copthorne, Crawley RH10 3SQ 01342 715022 www.acornsgym.com gatwickinfo@acornsgym.com June 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 43

BLOOMING TIMES
Rooted Gardening makeovers are nothing new. Topiary, hot tubs and patios were all the rage during the Roman Empire, says Flo Whitaker
IN THE PAST
I
f your neighbours drove you nuts over the bank holiday weekend as they enthusiastically set about their latest DIY garden project, remember – it could have been worse. In a previous incarnation, you might have suffered from even noisier neighbours because the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Persians and Romans were devotees of horticultural bling and were always getting the builders in. Fancy a mirrored pool with a fountain and gilded statures? No problem. Pergola? Easy-peasy. Hot tub? All the rage. Patio lighting? Yep. Blue-painted decking? Ok … so I made up the last bit - we probably have Mr Titchmarsh to thank for that one, but you get the idea. Horticulture was big business in the ancient world. A sunny weekend visit to a garden centre will confirm that precious little has changed. ‘Topiary’ comes from the Latin, ‘topia’, meaning an ornamental garden.
The topia was the domain of the ‘topiarius’, someone we would nowadays refer to as the Head Gardener; a skilled artisan who was also schooled in design and construction methods and could advise the garden owner on topics such as landscaping and decorative features. If a client’s
Horticulture was big business in the ancient world. A sunny weekend visit to a garden centre will confirm that precious little has changed garden required extensive remodelling, the topiarius took on the role of project manager; directing a team of labourers and under-gardeners. And you thought that garden makeovers were a new idea? Topiary, (literally!) grew from the evolution of the hedge. The first manmade hedges in Europe probably date from the Neolithic age. Over time, their
function subtly changed. No longer just a simple agricultural stockade, a well-maintained hedge became an indication of wealth and social rank; defining territory and showing that the landowner could afford to employ others to keep his estate in order. The first high-density human settlements were created by oldworld empires, long before the birth of Christ. Those new city-dwellers put great value on private outdoor spaces. They were places to relax and entertain, away from the hurly-burly of the bustling streets and markets. Garden styles that are so familiar to us today originated in those ancient worlds. Cloister gardens, secret gardens, parterres, knot gardens, water features, mazes and herb gardens are rooted in ancient Greek, Roman, Islamic, Egyptian and Indian cultures. Throughout the Middle Ages, Italy and France were considered to be world centres of horticultural excellence. International trade bought exciting new plants to European shores and the Medici’s, (the ASBO family from hell – imagine living next door to that lot!) were gardening obsessives; constructing ever-more lavish gardens that featured thousands of topiary specimens. The two great stalwart topiary plants are box, (Buxus) and yew, June 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 45

(Taxus). Their densely-packed foliage allows for intricate designs that will retain crisp outlines throughout winter. Privet, (Ligustrum) and the micro-leaved evergreen honeysuckle, (Lonicera nitida) are also good choices and are resistant to box blight disease. Bay, (Laurus) holly, (Ilex) and hornbeam, (Carpinus) are excellent for topiary work, although they cannot be clipped so closely. Spheres and
Give topiary an annual feed with slow-release fertiliser in spring simple geometric shapes are easiest to maintain and can be cut ‘by eye’. For more complicated shapes, wirework frames, designed to be permanently fixed over plant(s) can be purchased. The plant is allowed to grow until the frame is completely obscured, then clipped regularly to keep its shape. If starting from scratch seems daunting, ready-made topiary specimens are widely available. Don’t
scream at the prices; remember, someone has spent years doing all the work for you. The Victorians and Edwardians adored topiary and the gloriously-named London nurseryman, Mr Herbert Cutbush, was renowned for his potted topiary specimens. A pioneer of ‘grab it and go’ shopping, Herbert’s customers could select a plant and take it home straight away. This was

a revolutionary notion at a time when plants were grown in open ground in fields. Customers had to potentially wait for months until the correct time for the lifting and transplanting of their purchases. Hedges and topiary require a little care to keep them growing happily. Containerised topiary is especially prone to drought or lack of nutrients
46 SUSSEX LIVING | June 2019

and can also suffer from wind-rock, so think carefully about the type of container you use. A large lollipopheaded specimen will probably need a half barrel to keep it upright and stable. Give topiary an annual feed with slowrelease fertiliser in spring. A mulch of leaf mould, old potting soil or chipped bark will help retain moisture during the summer months. Containerised topiary may need watering every day in really hot weather and newly-planted hedges can suffer. If you planted a run of hedging this spring, consider purchasing a seep hose – a relatively inexpensive bit of kit that uses water efficiently, dripping it gently to the roots where it will do most good. Trimming and pruning of topiary is best done in May/June. A dry, overcast day puts less stress on the plants, and you; it can be hot, dusty work. Whatever you use; electric trimmers, shears or specialist topiary
tools, ensure the cutting blades are sharp. You want ‘clean’ cuts, not jagged ones where infection may take hold. Scrub the blades with hot soapy water before and after use, especially if you’ve previously loaned cutting tools to someone else. Disease pathogens quickly spread from plant to plant via
infected sap; basic hygiene is a sensible precaution. Another ‘tidy-up’ trim in early autumn may be required, but only do this in mild conditions, as frosty air will disfigure soft, recently-cut foliage, something those perfectionist, blingtastic Medici’s would simply not have tolerated. l

“This wasn’t the perfect house when we found it; the décor hadn’t been updated since the 1980s so it was very tired, the layout didn’t flow and the space was too small but I could see just how lovely it could be, and the location was perfect,” says Sue Marino. At the time the couple were living in a nearby village. “We were keen to start a family and were looking for a home we could grow into,” she says. Then two things happened which had a big impact on the Marinos. Interest rates rocketed and Sue’s mother died. “On one hand my father was struggling with living on his own rattling around in a house which was larger than he needed, and on the other our potential sum to buy had shrunk.”

LESSONS LEARNED
“Our renovations went surprisingly smoothly because we were constantly on hand to make decisions and changes as they were called for. We soon realised it was helpful to do our homework and prepare every night for what needed doing the following day, even drawing up plans for where lights should be placed. This gave the builders a clear direction for tasks to be done on a daily basis. “We soon discovered that building dust gets into everything even though everything was triple sealed. We had to wash the contents of our airing cupboard at least three times despite our best efforts to keep the dust out! If we were to undergo such extensive renovations again while living on-site we would hire a storage container to protect our possessions.”
After several discussions Sue and her father decided it would be a good idea to sell their respective homes, pool their resources and buy something that could be developed to suit everyone’s needs. It was the perfect solution; first priority was to build an extension to accommodate Sue’s father. “We took one third of the existing house and extended it to create a self-contained home with its own entrance, spacious sitting room and kitchen on the ground floor with two bedrooms and bathroom above.” The project was completed in 1996 with Nick undertaking much of the work himself. “Once we knew my dad was comfortable we could proceed with our

own part of the house,” says Sue. By then the couple’s daughter had been born and they realised they needed more living space, as apart from a small drawing room they had nowhere to really sit and relax as a family. “We were looking for a quick solution and hit upon the idea of a conservatory,” says Sue. “I wanted more of a garden room so we hunted on the internet until we found a conservatory that was in our price range which could adapt to the style of room I wanted.” The couple did most of the work themselves with Nick working in the evenings and at weekends to complete the project. “We were fortunate that we found the only Edwardian style kit on the market which we could adapt, the company were very flexible and even made adhesive wood frames to suit the Gothic style I wanted.” Fifteen years later Sue’s father suffered a stroke and became less mobile so the family built garages with a

DECORATING TIP
“Every room needs a focal point: we like to include several points of interest in a room, almost as if you were composing little individual scenes around the room. For instance, an empty corner will benefit from a pretty chair and cushion. These smaller more intimate snapshots keep a room, or indeed a garden, appealing wherever you look.”

self-contained living space for him on one level. They were then ready for the next renovation project: this time they planned to reconfigure the layout. Work included repositioning the front door giving the house a proper entrance hallway and moving walls so that rooms flowed into each other. Extending the house into Sue’s father’s area gave the couple a light, spacious drawing room with double doors opening onto the hallway. The original kitchen became a study, conveniently tucked behind the drawing room. Along with new wiring, windows and central heating the Marinos extended the house sideways, doubling the size. Replacing an exterior wall with ceiling to floor glass doors transformed the

“The round black table in the hallway was definitely our best purchase. We were browsing in a local antique shop when we glimpsed the edge of the table buried under some chairs, we asked the proprietor to pull it out for us and knew immediately it was perfect. We assumed it would be very expensive but it turned out to be incredibly reasonable and looks fabulous in its new home.”

layout of the new kitchen-cum-family living area creating a more relaxed open-plan style of living. “It was very exciting,” says Sue. “I had always dreamed of a painted shaker kitchen so most of the budget went on bespoke solid wood cabinetry, but we saved money by shopping around massively for light fittings, building materials and appliances.” When it came to the décor, Sue and son Marco shared the decision making. “Marco has a great eye for colour and we share similar tastes opting for pared down simplicity in soft shades of grey with white.” When furnishing most of the rooms Sue worked around pieces she had collected over the years, but the kitchen family area was a blank canvas. “We started afresh, I found it especially exciting to buy whatever I wanted without any restrictions.” Having created this made-to measure family home, Sue and Nick wouldn’t change anything. “Everything works and flows the way we want it. What we love most about living here is the amazing light, the space and the views – we find it a very uplifting house to be in.” l Photos: Narratives/Robert Sanderson Text & Styling: Narratives/Mandy Nolan

COMMUNITY highlight the importance of carers, raise awareness of the challenges they face and recognise the huge contribution they make to individuals, families and communities throughout the UK. This year the emphasis of Carers Week is getting carers connected with their community. Although it can be highly rewarding caring can be hard, and often carers own health falls by the wayside. But, get connected to support, advice, other carers, services, friends and family, and technology and it’s the first step to overcoming this. Visit www.carersweek.org to find out more.
SUPPORT
& Smile
LONELINESS AWARENESS WEEK 17-21st JUNE Only three years ago the Marmalade Trust started this national campaign to raise awareness of loneliness amongst everyone in the UK, and already in 2018 they supported over 250 events. This year’s theme is #LetsTalkLoneliness, and is about trying to reduce the stigma around the loneliness conversation and make it OK to speak about it openly and normally. Loneliness will affect most people at some point in their lives and can touch anyone from young school children, to new parents, and the elderly. Help beat loneliness by getting involved with this year’s campaign and build some new friendships in your community. Find out more by visiting marmaladetrust.org
Be aware this June for awareness weeks! Great for getting involved with your local community, meeting new people and supporting others. Sara Whatley looks at what is happening in Carers Week, Volunteers Week, Loneliness Awareness Week and Children’s Hospice Week
VOLUNTEERS WEEK 1-7th JUNE Celebrate volunteers in all their diversity this year during Volunteers Week. There are millions of volunteers across the UK giving their time and energy to support their communities from the seen to the unseen roles. Volunteers Week is a chance for us all to say thank you to the amazing contribution volunteers make to our communities.

Volunteering is a fulfilling way to get involved with something you are passionate about, be it gardening, caring, reading or chatting, and helping others makes you feel great about yourself too. CHILDREN’S HOSPICE WEEK 17-23rd JUNE Supporting the 49,000 children in the UK living with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, and their families, Children’s Hospice Week is this year focusing on ‘Moments that matter’. This theme shines a light on significant moments and memories in a family’s life and the services that can help them get there. It might be a first family swim in a specially designed pool or an outing to see some animals – whatever the moment or memory it can be shared to help raise awareness for this campaign, and in turn help support the 54 children’s hospice services in the UK. BEAUTY & FASHION
All that
GLITTERS Glitter magpies rejoice this festival season and fling the eco glitter around! Sara Whatley looks at some shimmer and shine styles to make you sparkle all summer long
H
ere we are at the beginning of the festival season, and what one essential do you absolutely need in your beauty arsenal to be a fully-fledged festival goer? Glitter. In festival season, glitter is most definitely not just for kids. Be it a mud slide to the rock stage, a champagne quaffing jazz soirée on the lawn or a crafty woodland retreat, glitter ticks all the festival chic boxes. But I am not just talking about any old glitter in these days of plastic clogged oceans and plastic clogged sea life – I am talking about eco glitter. Classed as a micro plastic along with microbeads in face washes, toothpastes and other cosmetics, environmentalists say that glitter will find it’s way into our oceans and into our eco system. Not good. All is not lost however. Sparkly festival fever may live on with the invention of eco glitter. Now widely available as both face glitter and for arts and crafts, most eco glitters are made from cellulose, a plant based film which is biodegradable. Now the question is how will you be wearing yours? Eyes and face looks – Go mad! Build up eye colour and top with a shimmery shadow, then start to build up glitter as you want on or around your eye. Go for big sweeps of sparkle or dab on under and around your eye. Get creative, stick on gem stones and matching glitter, even get the face paints out and adorn the look further. For a more demure take on the

look, dab a subtle shimmer under the outer reaches of a well defined eyebrow, which can lift a look and be a nod towards the sparkle. It doesn’t have to be OTT – although it’s ever so fun when it is! Glitter parting – Give yourself a bold straight parting, spray with hairspray to create a sticky base and sprinkle liberally with glitter. Mix it up with small and big glitter sizes to create interest, then spray with hairspray
again. Et voila! Nails – Go for a simple but effective glitter nail varnish. You can opt from anything to a subtle shimmer to a full on glitter look, and if you want to take it even further stick rhinestones on your nails for some big bling. Lipstick – Sparkly lipsticks are widely available where shimmer is mixed in with the lipstick, or simply use your favourite lipstick, slick some gloss over the top and dab on your chosen glitter. If you don’t fancy glittery hair or make up, why not accessorise with some sparkle? Revamp hairclips, headbands, sunglasses, jewellery, collars, bags and shoes by adding glitter, and shimmer all summer long. l

PETS
It’s a Dog’s Life Teddy is having some deep thoughts for a Border Terrier this month as he ponders the meaning of doggy sayings, writes Helen Stockton, the pen behind the paw
T
he other day I was lying in the sunlight, reflecting on the meaning of life, when it struck me how many expressions there are in the English language that include dogs. This is obviously because we are so important. For example, there’s ‘give a dog a bad name….’. Now this could be a reference to the unfortunate business of saddling some poor pooch with an ill-considered epithet such as ‘TiddlyPom’ or ‘Fluffy-Wuffy’, but even if owners are suitably restrained in the naming department, there’s always the additional worry, for pedigree dogs, of kennel names. Mine isn’t too bad; it’s ‘My Teddy Edwards’ which I think has a certain ring to it. It’s sometimes
abbreviated to ‘Teddy Eddie’ by ‘Her Indoors’ which is also pleasingly affectionate. However, you don’t have to look far through my pedigree to find names of dubious merit. I’m not sure ‘Plushcourt Gasp’ was a very healthy dog or that ‘Brumberhill Be Solo’ was

very sociable, and perhaps we ought to draw a veil over the moral integrity of a female relative called ‘Party Game Girl’. However, my Grandfather’s name of ‘Bob Bob Bobbin’ fits neatly with the official name of Rolo, my recently departed boss and mentor. His was ‘Janlane Red Robbin’. And I really can’t complain about having a mother called ‘Always Dotty’ – perfect! Still, I don’t think the expression, ‘give a dog a bad name..’ is actually a reflection of the quality of their title, but more a comment on the burden imposed by the loss of good reputation. This never troubled the Boss who relished his near mythical status as one of the world’s most naughty canines, and went to some trouble, on a regular basis, to maintain it. Then there are expressions such as ‘why keep a dog and bark yourself’ which comments on our domestic usefulness. ‘Her Indoors’ sometimes impersonates my barking and growling, usually when playing a vigorous game of tug o’ war. She’s no idea what she’s saying, bless her, and I can only think the Boss must have taught her some of that language as it certainly didn’t come from me, but she clearly doesn’t adhere to that particular expression. There are others that are pleasing such as ‘like a dog with two tails’. This isn’t a comment on some bizarre mutation, but more a suggestion of such an ecstasy of wagging that one tail blurs into many. I am certainly capable of this when ‘Her Indoors’ has the cheek to leave me, and then, just as I’ve given up hope and considered myself duly abandoned, returns. There are other expressions, with less fortunate associations, involving dogs, for example, ‘he’s gone to see a man about a dog’. Why bring us into the unsavoury business? However, there are some that demonstrate our equality too, so, if you’ll forgive me, I’m going back to where I started, abandoning my typing duties and lying in the sun, because, as it is well known, ‘only mad dogs and Englishmen…’ That’s okay then! l
