Robin Ticciati, a lifelong devotee of music and arts, conductor and Music Director of Glyndebourne, talks to Sara Whatley about cliff jumping, his poetic love of Sussex, self-transformation and relinquishing control to let music magic happen

“I

f there was ever a moment to come back and say nothing should be taken for granted, nothing should be ‘normal’, this is it,” said Robin Ticciati OBE, conductor and Music Director of Glyndebourne (a position he has held since 2014, having previously been Music Director of

Glyndebourne Tour between 2007 and 2009). And will it be a ‘normal’ year this year for arts and music festivals worldwide? I think the whole of humanity is very much hoping so, whatever normal is anymore. We need to get back to packed theatres, communal experiences, “the buzz and the interaction and the proximity, the warmth of people’s bodies next to each other, the silence before a piece

starts, that sense of expectation.” That is certainly what Ticciati is looking forward to during the Glyndebourne Festival from 21st May to 28th August this year. London born with Italian ancestry, Ticciati’s love of music started from birth. In fact, he said, “I feel lucky enough that music has been in my blood for as long as I can remember.”

His parents played music at home and Ticciati remembers drinking it in, and letting it take over. At the age of eight he was listening to Rachmaninoff and trying to play it on the piano. “It was this process of being fascinated and being carried away by the emotions.” His paternal grandfather, Niso Ticciati was a musician too – composer, cellist and keyboardist. “He died very young, but my dad talks about him with real love and he was obviously deeply passionate and knowledgeable,” Ticciati recalled. But let’s return to the beginning and find out when Ticciati first picked up a baton. “Let me take you back there,” he said. “When I was 13 or 14, a conductor called Sir Colin Davis stood up in front of the National Youth Orchestra. He was in his 70’s then and I looked up at this man, and he just told the most incredible stories. He seemed to dance with the music, and we were all under this spell. I thought I would love to be the one responsible for telling those stories. That was the first impulse.” At that age Ticciati was training in violin, piano and percussion, but the conducting soon took over. Since 2017 he has held the position of Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, and previous to this he was the Principal Conductor for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from 2009 – 2018. He has also been appointed guest-conductor to various orchestras around the globe and has immortalised his sound and vision on a number of recordings. In 2019 Ticciati was appointed an OBE for services to music. Watching a conductor at work you see it is so much more than simply keeping the time of the piece with a deftly moving white baton. Ticciati’s whole body, including his gaze and breath, is communicating with the

I’m certainly in that game to give classical music and opera the most beautiful voice it can have musical, as though he can no longer separate himself from the music that envelops his life. This is unsurprising, given the extraordinarily lengthy process a conductor undergoes with a piece

orchestra in front of him, so I asked him what the nuances of conducting are. “There are different worlds of leadership; dealing with people, dealing with the composer, the score, the balance, the knowledge, the instruments, and one’s self.” I wanted to delve deeper into the conductor’s mind, to try to understand how he holds so much together and moves the players as one to let the music come out. “I try not to think about it, but when you analyse it you have to be singing in your head what’s coming up because you do beat naturally a bit ahead of the orchestra simply to propel them forward. But, at the same time you have to be listening to the real time sound of the orchestra in order to bend and shape their sound. I’m talking fractions of back and forth, but you can have the whole sentence or the phrase of the music in your mind whilst you’re conducting it, at the same time as listening to every note as it’s being played.” Perhaps it’s Ticciati’s relatively young age, but he seems on more than one occasion during our conversation to refer to working on his self as a human, to undergo some sort of transformation. The quest, he says, is to release the music into the open for the audience to feel it and be transported themselves. The human transformation seems to come at the point where the conductor has led the players, done all he can to make the music and composer sound as best they can, and then he must “relinquish that control and let it happen. And that seems to be the thing that takes a lifetime.” As he speaks this truth the cadence of his voice is

of music before they even stand in front of the musicians. They may sit with it for months or even years to learn it absolutely; inside out, back to front, the compositional history, simply everything that can be done to understand how it functions. And of course, they must think how the composer wanted it to sound, and how they themselves want it to sound. And then finally, the next step. “You stand in front of the orchestra and at that point something happens, and you have to listen to what they give you,” Ticciati explained. “It’s when they give you the sound and their own impression of the piece you can meet together, and everything comes together.” Each piece must be approached in its own way taking into account its requirements, genre and the needs of the musicians. Ticciati gave examples of a certain oboe player needing a bigger breath, or a singer who doesn’t quite have big enough lungs so the piece must be taken at double the speed. It’s all about being adaptable, “and also fairly ruthless, because unless you have that burning vision people won’t jump off the cliff with you, they will worry you don’t have a parachute.” That vision and ruthless jumping off is needed to take opera into the 21st century and make it relatable to the audience today. “The whole point of doing these pieces is they are timeless if they are classics, but you want them to go straight to the heart of the listener and viewer,” said Ticciati. “Great directors will keep faithful to the libretto [text of an opera] and the score, but will turn the piece on an axis which gives people another view and therefore another type of feeling, often more immediate.” And how does Ticciati approach the music side of things? “Some

conductors, and I am one of them, are very interested in what the composer was hearing at the time. You want the musical reproduction to be as close to what the composer envisaged which means sometimes using instruments of the time, especially in the classical and baroque period. But I only say that because I think that will create the leap in the heart for people that they will feel this music.” Being a Music Director not only means conducting the orchestra, but also taking into account and being

Ticciati explained that when thinking about the programme of an upcoming festival, the desired outcome is a balance of the old and new. You want people to be excited about hearing old friends and exploring

new operas alike. This extends to the singers and conductors too, and also taken into account is the language, country, style and time of a piece. “It’s wonderful to give the audience a real overview of a big chunk of time,” he said. “Or, if you are going to centre in, you make a deal of it.” When it comes to casting an opera it’s a similar story; a balance between old and new voices is being searched for. “The audience want to be enchanted by a new voice, but also a principal singer in a role that the audience knows can really create a buzz,” said Ticciati. Working with the creative team at Glyndebourne they are lucky in that it is known to be a place where new emerging talent springs up but also where absolute seasoned singers have trodden the boards for years – Dame Felicity Lott, Sir Thomas Allen, Sir John Tomlinson are all regular faces. I voiced my fears that it may not be so easy to find those enchanting new voices in future years if the arts are continued to be seen as unimportant aspects of education. Ticciati agreed, citing the government’s total lack of understanding that arts are something that can build a better society. But, he said, “I think it’s fair to say that the arts have always been punching from below. Look back into Mozart and Beethoven’s

There seems to be a respect for nature but there is also an air of curiosity, which is beautiful, and I hope Sussex can hold onto that.” And finally, I broach the subject of Ticciati still playing the instruments he was trained in. Does he still play? “No one would want to hear me play an instrument right now, not hardly

myself,” he laughed. “The one thing I would love to spend more time over, when it happens, is to get back to the piano. Just for that sense, you don’t make a sound as a conductor, or at least you shouldn’t, and that feeling of putting a dominant chord down next to a subdominant, playing through a score or accompanying a singer, is another type of musical activity that is very enriching. Purely on a private level.” Maybe one day the tables will turn and Ticciati will be the other side of the baton, tinkling the ivories. But for now, with his magic white wand in his hand, he casts his spell over the orchestra once more and sets the music free to enrich the lives of all that care to listen. l PHOTO: SAM STEPHENSON

time; they were constantly working for funds, places to perform, and that doesn’t change.” Ticciati continued, “In no way do I want to be involved in the murky world of politics, but as a conductor, being responsible for and caring about classical music and education and the way our society works means you have to have a view, you can’t sit there in the ivory tower and learn your scores and expect there to be an audience and a concert hall. Everything now needs to be fought for, and I’m certainly in that game to give classical music and opera the most beautiful voice it can have.” Ticciati lives in Berlin with his wife, a singer – they recently married – but they also reside in Sussex close to his second home of Glyndebourne, which he has been associated with for nearly 20 years now. I asked if there was an element of Sussex he particularly enjoyed, and when after a pause he answered his voice was thick with emotion. “Gosh, where to begin? I met my wife in Sussex. We got engaged in Sussex.” He took a shaky breath and continued, “There is something in the nodes, something in the energies, in the landscape, in the light, in the benevolence of the renewing sea breeze. I enjoy the fact that I can feel connected to nature but there are also very interesting people to relate to. There is

It may seem early, but GCSE and A Level examinations are only a few weeks away for many students. Adele Trathan offers some practical advice with some of the best methods for effective exam study

The Revision Decision O

ver the past decade or so, the method by which academic excellence is judged has altered somewhat. Coursework and assessed performance, not least in the wake of Covid-19, has shifted the emphasis away from exams somewhat. However, despite the theory that the end-of-year tests perhaps favour an ability to revise as much as demonstrating an actual knowledge of a subject, they are still a pivotal part of a student progressing to the next stage, be that Higher Education, a vocational qualification or something else. With that in mind, here are 10 tips for students looking to maximise their potential when it comes to revision:

REGULAR BREAKS The brain is only designed to function most efficiently on a topic for short periods of time, so regular breaks for refuelling and to facilitate naps is

absolutely vital if looking to keep learning potential at peak levels. READING & WRITING Efficient revision is about more than reading up on notes. It’s vital to write down observations and ideas, and even paraphrase passages in a different tone to facilitate a different method for absorbing information. Some students have found that writing down in very small lettering creates an additional focus and increased retention of ideas. EFFICIENCY It’s been known for students to spend more time arranging a schedule than they actually

PREPARATION It goes without saying, the earlier revision starts, the more chance a student will have of doing well. ORGANISATION Having a structure and a process to revision is crucial. Subjects should be ordered, with the student deciding on those that need more time than others, and a priority established that is fed into a timetable… that’s stuck to! Sewing and thread work brings with it the power to tell stories, elicit emotion, positively influence mental health and bring joyous satisfaction to its creator. Sara Whatley spools out a tapestry and embroidery yarn

ewing is a great storyteller. From the huge wall hangings which adorned the houses of the upper classes in the great tapestry period from the mid 14th century to the end of the 18th century, to modern tapestries hanging in galleries for all to enjoy today. The intricate scenes may have shifted towards a more abstract and loose form, incorporating different textiles and techniques for example, but the storytelling never stops.

Across centuries, countries and cultures, tapestry has been used as an expressive art form, decorating walls and also having the practical element of being a fabulous draft excluder in those drafty old castles! It is also used to explore ideas of spirituality, identity, sexuality and political issues. Tapestry is one of the oldest forms of woven textile and yet contemporary artists, such as Grayson

Artistic Director of the Embroiderers Guild. She explained to me how in the past the artist, the one designing the tapestry, has always been at the top and the craftsman, the one actually making the tapestry, is unrecognised at the bottom. “Now we have artist-makers, incorporating both skills into one title,” she said. Although it is still rare that artists know how to weave a tapestry also, as Anthea told me, it takes 10 years of training to teach a weaver. In its truest sense tapestry is a form of woven textile using yarn on a loom, but over the years the word ‘tapestry’

Creative subjects teach children about research and investigation, and that the journey is just as important as the end product

has evolved to include embroidered elements as well. Indeed, the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts events leading up to and during the Battle of Hastings is actually embroidered on a plain background, making the vibrant and intricate scenes stand out and really come to life. It is thought to date from the 11th century, shortly after the battle itself. This huge textile is a classic example of storytelling in art and is known the world over. Talking to Anthea about what the Embroiderers Guild does, she explained how they champion all forms of embroidery and are enthusiastic about taking the subject out to teach and gain further interest, especially for the younger generations. “If we don’t get the interest from youngsters then this will become a dying art,” Anthea explained. The Embroiderers Guild, which was started in 1906, also celebrate all recent textiles graduates across the country and provide them with opportunities to showcase their work at major shows. Anthea was keen to tell me how they have recently started to recognise the great work textile teachers do too with a special award. It is a subject that has

traditionally been seen as women’s work, but with the help of this award, there seems to be a slight shift in that perception. After the recent lockdowns and surge in interest in creative practices, I asked Anthea how stitching is good for you. “Craftwork production was immense over Covid,” she said. “People realised there is more to life than 24/7 work, and the mental health benefits of embroidery, well, when I’m embroidering all my worries go, I’m just concentrating on creating something I love.”

It is heartening that so many have picked up craftwork as a hobby, but what about it as a job, and what about arts education? We have seen numerous cuts to funding for arts education recently and it is jeopardising the future of many of these skills. “If we don’t teach these subjects from a young age they will go. Where is the next generation of craft coming from?” Anthea believes that with cuts to arts subjects in schools and higher education they will have to be taught privately and only the upper echelons will benefit; but education should be for all, not just for the few. “Creative subjects teach children about research and investigation, and that the journey is just as important as the end product, but they are seen as not worthy,” Anthea continued. Imagine going to the opera or the ballet and the doors being shut. That will happen if things don’t change. But, glimmers of light shine out from schools doing the best they can to keep these subjects alive. I recently visited Bolney C of E Primary School to see their creative project, what they are calling their ‘School Tapestry’ (although technically an embroidery), made to celebrate their 150th anniversary.

It tells the story of the children’s journey through school “It tells the story of the children’s journey through school. The caterpillar and butterflies represent the transition of the children from when they join the school to when they leave and their transformation into individual characters,” explained Mrs Sarah Bridger, the teaching assistant who has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition, along with Mrs Carole Wood and Mrs Jo Glew. Hanging proudly in their school hall, the work depicts a huge tree of

life, rooted in love and adorned with butterflies, a caterpillar and other woodland animals. The whole school helped to make the tapestry, with Key Stage 1 (5-7 years old) pupils making the leaves of the tree, which are printed fabric hands. The trunk came from a textiles club from 2014, and is plaited material sewn together into the trunk and branches. Children of Key Stage 2 (7-11 years old) made the butterflies, caterpillar, snail and hedgehog. They started by making their embroidery frames from glued-together lolly sticks tightly covered with material. Then they drew their template on the material and embroidered their design on there. All the children had to think about colour, texture and design before they started their printing or embroidering, and some practiced different stitches such as cross-stitch, running stitch, couching and sewing on buttons, which harks back to Anthea’s point about research and investigation. “The children loved it,” said Mrs Bridger. “They were focused and still, it was a lovely creative process.” Perhaps

this is the foundation some of these children need to take crafting further and be part of the next generation of creatives. With the work of places like the Embroiderers Guild and skilled and enthusiastic teachers like Mrs Bridger, hopefully sewing and the creative subjects will continue to tell stories from the past and future stories too for many generations to come. l

2 We can all learn a little something from our children from time to time, something Sara Whatley is trying to remember this month in… LITTLE LIFE LESSONS

y back hurts, my legs ache and my arms are like lead weights, but I haven’t been training for an Iron Woman competition. Oh no, I’ve simply been running around after my children! Will they ever stay still I wonder? At the moment I can’t see that ever happening. At one and five, they are absolutely bursting with energy from the moment they chirp for their morning milk to the blessed moment their sweetsmelling heads hit the pillow. It’s go, go, go, for the little one, Jarvis who is a climber, a dancer, a runner and explorer – what a combination! Turn your back for one second and he is balanced on one foot, teetering on top of a pot of bum cream on the edge of a table while he clings onto the windowsill and casually peers out into the garden.

“Probably not a good idea, darling,” I say as I swoop in and just manage to catch him as the bum cream slips out from under his foot. He just looks up at me with his big blue eyes, trusting I will always be there to catch him when he falls. I will of course try my best, but he definitely doesn’t make it easy for me. My bright as a button daughter, Mia is daring in other ways at her age, like zooming off on her scooter way into the distance. I can but holler

after her to ‘tuck in’ when cars pass by, along the country roads. She had a good crash the other day and scratched up her poor little nose – my husband and I spent the next week secretly laughing because her scab made her look so much like Mini Mouse. Since Mia started school last September she has been much more tired, and goes to bed just after her little brother. But still it takes her a

while to settle into sleep. “Let your mind be still,” I said to her recently as she did finger maths and phonics in her bed. “But I can’t Mummy,” came her earnest reply. “My mind is always leaking out ideas.” I paused and smiled into the dark.

What a marvel it is to be so full of energy, so full of the joys of learning not just with your mind but with your body as well. It reminds me frequently that every day is a learning opportunity. In a single day my children might master how to run, go down steps, read

a sentence or learn about space, and in turn what do I learn in a day? The latest news, a new recipe perhaps, but mostly not a lot. So, time to set myself a new challenge: take every learning opportunity available, and enjoy it just as much as my children do. l

Love Local this Year Throughout the decades, the high streets of towns and villages across Wealden have been places to shop, relax and enjoy leisure time.

With more of us staying local during the pandemic, there has been a resurgence in their popularity and this in turn, has led to a greater recognition that if we don’t support our high streets, we will lose them to the detriment of community life and local jobs. Wealden District Council is supporting our town and village centres via its ‘Shop and Dine Well in Wealden’ campaign.

eAST DEAN: Tucked away at the edge of the scenic South Downs, this small Wealden village lies close to Beachy Head and Birling Gap beach. One side of the village is home to a cluster of eateries surrounding a quintessential village green, whilst nearby are well supported local stores. East Dean hosts a popular weekly market on Wednesday mornings where you can shop for fresh produce and bakes, locally brewed drinks and artisan crafts. Car parking is available off Village Green Lane and there is disabled access to a tea room, gift shop and toilets.

FOREST ROW: You could easily spend a couple of hours walking around the village, especially on market day (every Wednesday). This confident and self-sufficient community is home to a wide selection of independent stores and cafes set along its main road and tucked away in side streets. In recent years, Forest Row has become a centre for organic produce and services.

MAYFIELD: Take a stroll back in time around this picture-perfect village perched high in the Sussex Weald. With a medieval high street and fifteenth century Anglican church, you can discover delicious food and drink from locally sourced producers in a number of deli and specialist stores. Apparently, the village’s 18th century smugglers had a reputation for applying their profits to the benefit of the local community and as you walk its high street today, you can still sense that same community feeling.

his is a magical spot. It is remote, quiet and romantic. You know when summer arrives when the swallows arrive. Hence the name of the valley we overlook, is called Swallows Bottom.” Rachel Redfern leant over her stable kitchen door whilst feeding her chickens pecking their lunch off old flagstones outside the back door. When Rachel and her husband Tim bought the woodman’s cottage a few years ago they were turning a new page on their life together. Tim had left the navy and Rachel left her job with a city law firm and started an art foundation course

Rachel has always invested in freestanding kitchen furniture, so when the walls dividing the three rooms were taken down and a new stone floor laid, her island unit, larder and dresser arrived from storage. “They were well loved pieces of furniture that were part of my old kitchen in our last house,” Rachel explained, “I just had to find a local carpenter to make a new sink unit.” However, merging their bulky dark teak furniture from Asia with the soft pretty country look that Rachel wanted to embrace was their biggest challenge. Rachel recalled, “Tim and I had collected several pieces of Eastern furniture when we were first married and living in Hong Kong. Tim had

been stationed at the naval base there and he always jokes that I arrived with a backpack stuffed with a long ball gown for naval dances, and eventually left married to a naval officer, heavily pregnant, with a container load of Eastern furniture from Macau, Java and Hong Kong!” The Eastern furniture fitted beautifully in the grand proportions of their former home at the Gothic mansion, but squeezing it in and amalgamating these bulky pieces needed careful consideration. “In the end we couldn’t accommodate all the pieces, so we sold several of the larger bits and gave some away,” said Rachel.

In the dining room they kept their dark Chinese lacquered teak table and chairs, but Rachel carefully chose cream curtains and pretty duck egg china to soften the overall look. For the sitting room Rachel found some aubergine coloured sofas on an online auction site, which originally came from Harrods, she then followed a geometric theme with jade accessories to compliment the minimalist Eastern look. Against the textured stone and neutral walls Rachel has hung paintings which she has done of the local area and Sussex sailing villages to make a calming contrast. Their most recent addition to the cottage has been a wooden clad extension which they initially intended to be a new larger kitchen. “But because the kitchen had been used by so many different cooks for over four hundred years, I felt upset about the idea of moving it, it seemed disrespectful,” Rachel

explained. So instead of a kitchen they decided to put a new master bedroom, dressing room and study into the new extension plus a new front hall. The extended living area is situated on sloping ground, so the rooms in the extension step down towards the valley, creating some interesting interior roof shapes and different vistas between the various levels. Rachel exhibits her paintings in Studio Tuesday and two of her pieces were selected for the National Open Art Competition and her most recent artistic adventure has been designing a new range of cushions and other home accessories. “Living in this beautiful area is conducive to artists,” said Rachel. “You cannot help but be inspired by the wonderful countryside, and our boys, Samuel and Marcus, love to be outside enjoying their surroundings at every opportunity. They have experienced sledging on the hill behind the house when it has snowed and making tree houses in the woods during the summer.

ince working from home became the new normal, the kitchen has become the hub of the home, a place to enjoy quality time as well as preparing food. I wondered how quartz worktops compared to other materials. Matthew and Dan were keen to reveal it requires minimal maintenance; a quick wipe with a damp cloth keeps it clean. The roots of Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day were laid down in different times and in contrasting ways so Peter d’Aguilar has delved into history to learn a little more about them

ne thing we all have in common is a mother, but it’s far too easy to take motherhood for granted. So Mothering Sunday is a chance to celebrate and give thanks for all those wonderful ladies without whom we wouldn’t even be here. While Mothering Sunday is now increasingly referred to as Mother’s Day, the two have distinct differences. Mothering Sunday’s roots go as far back as Ancient Greece, when Greeks used to hold an annual spring festival dedicated to the maternal Goddess Rhea – mother of the Gods. In this

SUNDAY country, Mothering Sunday began in the 16th Century as a Christian religious ceremony and its maternal reference was to a person’s ‘mother church’, rather than their human mother. Traditionally, worshippers would attend a special service on the fourth Sunday in Lent at the most important church in their neighbourhood. It was also

a chance for children, some as young as ten, who were working away from home to have a rare day off to visit their mothers – hence its gradual evolution into a celebration of motherhood rather than just being a religious event. Over the years, Mothering Sunday gradually fell out of fashion until it was resurrected by Constance Smith, a vicar’s

daughter, who founded the Society for the Observance of Mothering Sunday in celebration of motherhood, the Virgin Mary and Mother Nature. Mother’s Day, on the other hand, is an early 20th century American innovation; created by social activist Anna Jarvis to commemorate her mother’s anti-war activism. Although Anna eventually became disillusioned with its commercialisation, President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday in 1914. This year, Mothering Sunday falls on Sunday 27th March in Britain, while Mother’s Day is on Sunday 8th May in the USA, Canada and Australia – and on a variety of different dates in over forty other countries around the world. Mothering Sunday gives us a chance to honour our mothers – as well as mother figures such as

grandmothers, aunts, sisters, carers and guardians. Children can show their love and appreciation for their mums with homemade cards, handmade tissue paper flowers and other gifts made at home with care and love. Breakfast in bed remains perennially popular. The gift of flowers is a tradition that stems from the child workers picking wildflowers on their way home – especially violets – to give to their mothers. Today, more flowers are bought for Mothering Sunday than at any other time of the year – daffodils, tulips and other spring flowers are the blooms

most closely associated with the occasion. Mums may be treated to a special family meal or a day out. Hopefully it’s an opportunity for them to put their feet up for a bit, while the rest of the family take over the chores. Mothering Sunday is also one of the most popular days of the year for eating out – so don’t forget to book early. Another Mothering Sunday tradition is the baking of Simnel cake, which also has associations with Easter. Consisting of layers of dried fruit and marzipan, a traditional Simnel cake also reflects the religious overtones of the event by featuring eleven balls of marzipan, representing all Jesus’ disciples except for Judas. Mothering buns, iced and

sprinkled with hundreds and thousands, are another Mothering Sunday speciality. Mothering Sunday is the third most celebrated day after Christmas and Easter. It’s also a busy time of year for the postal service – in Britain, around thirty million Mothering Sunday cards are sent out – not to mention all the hand-delivered homemade ones. SowDELICIOUS Got a greenhouse? Is there anything growing in it, or has it become a sad dumping ground for broken garden paraphernalia? Have a spring clear-out, says Flo Whitaker, take the junk to the recycling centre and make space for some nutritious summer veg!

ow is the ideal time to sow tender summer vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and peppers, (both sweet and chilli types). Frost-sensitive seedlings enjoy the protection of a warm conservatory, electric propagator or heated greenhouse. If you don’t have those, fear not – other methods are available. An airing cupboard may seem an unlikely bit of gardening kit, but the seeds will enjoy the warmth. They require no light during the first stages of germination

Don’t sow the entire packet! Ask yourself, ‘How many plants do I actually need?’ and won’t mind the dark. Check them twice a day and remove to a bright indoor location as soon as shoots appear. A sunny windowsill makes a good propagation bench – but move pots into the centre of the room overnight. Windowsills are often chilly at night, as cool air is trapped between cold glass and drawn curtains – an unpleasant environment for tender plants. Don’t sow the entire packet! Ask yourself, ‘How many plants do I actually need?’ If you keep some seeds in reserve, you can always try again if the first sowing fails. Seed trays occupy lots of space on a greenhouse bench and are too wide for most windowsills. Instead, fill a 10cm pot with seed compost, press the surface down lightly and space a dozen seeds on the surface. Scatter a very fine layer of compost or vermiculite on top and stand the pot in a saucer of water for 10 minutes.

Allow excess water to drain away and loosely place clear plastic over the top of the pot, removing when seedlings start to show. Germination times can be erratic in spring; 7-14 days is typical. Rotating the pots 90° every day ensures seedlings grow upright, not ‘phototropic’, (leaning towards the light). When 4cms high, transplant seedlings into individual small pots using multipurpose compost. They’ll need another final potting-on; 20cms pots are ideal for peppers and aubergines; tomatoes and cucumbers need 30cms or larger. Stake plants early

As plants begin to flower, apply a tomato fertiliser at the recommended rate. If you don’t have a greenhouse or conservatory, all is not lost as some cool-resistant summer veg varieties are now available. They’ve been bred to cope with the contrariness

of British weather and will crop in a sheltered outdoor spot. Aubergines are the exception to this hardy band – they’ll sulk unless you can offer them continuous warmth under glass. Aubergine seedlings can also be slow to reach maturity. Sowing in February/early March extends the growing season, but only do this if you can provide a sustained (day and night) temperature of around 18°C. Alternatively, wait until plantlets appear in the garden centres – let someone else have the hassle of raising them! l

The countryside is home to lots of nesting birds too and they don’t all nest in trees. Over half of England’s most threatened breeding birds nest on or near the ground, so be sure to watch your step for camouflaged nests, stick to paths, and keep your dogs on a lead to give them the best chance of survival. As the nesting season gets underway, giving nature a helping hand is sure to brighten your spring. However, if you find a fledgling bird – one that is fully feathered and has just left the nest – resist the temptation to intervene. These young birds may look uncoordinated as they master the art of flying, but left well alone, they stand the best chance of survival. Jacqui Wingfield, who has just opened a new shop, Paws on Track, in the Orchards, Haywards Heath, is one of those people. Jacqui’s background is in dog training and she quickly realised that what dogs eat, has a significant impact on their health, wellbeing and behaviour. For example, many dogs are unable to tolerate grain foods. She also witnessed owners struggling to get the best out of their dogs with poorly fitting equipment and cheap toys that just weren’t up to the job. So, she decided to do something about it, and

he humble brick has been around for several millennia. Originally made from sun dried clay, then kiln-fired clay, they’re long lasting and extremely strong. Bricks are laid in courses, bound together by mortar to produce brickwork in a style of patterns or bonds. Some are structural, some are decorative and the range of names is extensive: Flemish, Monk, Sussex, Basket Weave and Herringbone to name but a handful. Look up at old brick buildings and inlaid in the brickwork, the date of construction, or the name of the local brickworks is often clear to see. The brickwork industry existed across the county, in towns and villages making bricks with local clay, creating subtle, uniquely coloured products that varied from one manufacturer to another. Bricks have their own lexicography; the ends are

known as Headers, Beds form the top and bottom faces, and Stretchers are the sides. The depressions in the Beds are known as Frogs. Early bricks were of a size to be conveniently held in one hand, with the mortar trowel held in the other. As a rough guide the length is double the width, or thereabouts. The mortar that binds brickwork these days may be made of sand and cement, but the lime mortar of the past has its own foundations in the local landscape. The pockmarks of old chalk pits scar the Sussex downland. Quarried chalk

was burnt at around 900°C in limekilns to release the carbon dioxide, the remainder becoming quicklime. Once mixed with water a chemical reaction takes place and the dried out mixture is lime. In the building industry lime can be used in plaster, cement, or as mortar, binding the brick courses together. Handmade bricks of the past would have been made on site, in a factory adjacent or close to the clay quarry. Shipped around the hinterland initially by horse and cart, then an early Austin A30 van or a Bedford lorry, these bricks helped create a unique identity to the oldest parts of any town or village. Decades later these areas remain distinctive and are unlikely to be replicated elsewhere.

Many towns and villages across Sussex have had a brickyard or brickworks in their time. One by one they’ve disappeared as consolidation within the industry slowly rendered them uneconomic. With mass manufacture, bricks and homes had become somewhat homologous, designed in a central office and

replicated across the country in fiscally efficient housing estates arguably lacking the character of their ancestors. A few old brickworks still survive, and there are locations across Sussex where bricks are still made by hand, using methods handed down through the generations, locking the historical DNA into new buildings, into listed buildings in conservation areas, or into structures built by folk who admire the authenticity of something made by hand, one by one. It’s mind boggling to think that a building block as simple as a brick can have so many variations in size, colour, constitution and usage. Over the years brick has lent itself to the construction of some magnificent structures. The current and very picturesque Bodiam Bridge was built in 1797 for £1,150. It’s a single track, humpbacked tripled arched brick structure that has received improvement work in recent years and has long been subject to a weight limit. The Ouse Valley Viaduct spans a length of 450m (1,480 feet), and consists of 37 arches up to 29m (96 feet) in height. It opened in 1841 and was built

s a history-lover and an obsessive frequenter of antique and junk shops, there was really only one place that Emily Brooks wanted to buy a seaside home. Rye in East Sussex is a town with more than a thousand years of history; an important medieval port that later played host to brandy-addled 18th-century smugglers, and much later became the home of genteel artists and authors such as Paul Nash, Henry James and EF Benson. Plus, of course, there was the pull of the sea itself; Rye Harbour, with its bird hides and rare plant life, and the steep golden dunes of nearby Camber Sands, are the perfect places to head when the narrow medieval streets start to feel too confining. “I love the way that the medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings jostle for space in Rye, and there are weird and wonderful architectural details everywhere you look – I’m still finding new nooks and crannies,” said Emily. “Plus it would probably take a whole day to go round all the vintage and antique shops, which is my idea of heaven.” Emily’s house, Bee Cottage, which she shares with husband Andrew, is an early-Edwardian semi which is situated just

a ten-minute walk from the medieval citadel. Full of colour and with lots of irreverent touches, the interior mixes period features, vintage furniture and lighting, and contemporary style. Although it looks like a small red-brick cottage from the outside it’s bigger than it first appears with a large open-plan living and dining space, and three double bedrooms, including an attic master bedroom with tree-skimming views towards the town. “We knew the medieval heart of Rye was going to be too expensive for us, but actually this place turned out to be perfect, because we get a garden and free parking, two things that are pretty scarce here,” explained Emily. The couple first discovered the town about ten years ago, while on a weekend away in nearby Hastings. When they decided to move in together, rather than pool their resources, Emily

sold her flat and bought the house in Rye, and they kept Andrew’s flat in London. The long-term plan is to retire here, but for now it’s a weekend bolt-hole that’s only an hour and a half from the capital. Emily, a journalist, writes about design and interiors for a living, so she had a good idea about what she wanted – despite a limited budget. “The house was structurally sound, but very tired; everything needed redoing, including replastering, partial rewiring and a new kitchen and bathroom,” she recalled. “We did as much work as we could ourselves, spending a long hot summer stripping off woodchip, painting, sanding the floors and installing new skirting boards and dado rails. It felt never ending, especially when we were working our day jobs in the city. We were only coming down at weekends, but fortunately friends and family chipped in and kept us going.” No unexpected horrors arose during the renovation, but since the couple had never undertaken anything like this before, the project

You need to act like a dealer. I hired a van and went to a massive local outdoor antiques market to find furniture inevitably went over time and over budget. Once the kitchen and bathroom were fitted and the painting and carpeting done, there wasn’t nearly as much left in the pot for furnishings as they had first envisaged. “By the time we had put a sizable amount aside for the mattresses, which were something that I felt would be stupid to scrimp on – I had about £3,500 left,” said Emily. So, it was time to get creative: “My overall ethos was that it had to be low-budget but stylish, and to me that means lots of online bargains, junk-shop finds and weeding out those high-street gems that have a designer look about them. “I also wanted to mix in some antiques that would have seemed at home when the house was built; like the cane chairs in the living room, or the Victorian washstand in the attic bedroom, to keep a connection with the original architecture. Beyond that, it was anything goes!” The house offers a great lesson in how to create a stylish, eclectic interior on a budget. Objects have been creatively reused, like the Arts & Crafts screen that’s been made into an imposing headboard in the master bedroom. Plus, Emily has created a great sense of fun, from the wall of kitsch mountain landscapes on the stairway to the funfair waltzer panels mounted on the back patio-wall of the house. Emily’s tip on budget decorating is that, “you need to act like a dealer. I couldn’t believe the price of a new dining table, even a cheap laminated one from the high street, and a big

As well as countryside walks from the door, the beaches at Camber Sands and Rye Harbour are very close. “I feel like we get the best of both worlds here,” said Emily, who regularly heads out with

her camera to capture the coastline. “Camber is the traditional bucket-andspade beach – family-friendly, where you can grab a cup of tea in one of the cafés and do some people-watching. But Rye Harbour’s where you go for solitude: it’s just me, a book, the birds wheeling around, and the boats sailing in and out.” She continued: “Rye is incredibly picturesque, but it’s really interesting to me that it’s not just a pretty face, if you

The pubs and restaurants are brilliant, and there are loads of events – we love scallop week in February, and the jazz festival in the summer. The arts scene in general is also really vibrant and thriving.” The couple got married here a few years ago and they walked with their wedding party behind them, from the Georgian Town Hall, all along the medieval cobbled streets, to a local pub to celebrate. Muffins

These are not just muffins they are extra-special muffins by Adele Trathan. A creamy custard filling and topped with fresh apple slices and cinnamon sugar they are delightfully indulgent INGREDIENTS 250ml (8½fl oz) semi-skimmed milk 90g (3oz) butter, melted 250g (9oz) self-raising flour 150g (5oz) plain flour 200g (7oz) caster sugar 1 medium egg ½ tsp ground cinnamon 80ml (3fl oz) ready-made thick custard 80g (3oz) canned apple pie mix 2 small apples, cored and thinly sliced 2 tbs brown sugar ½ tsp ground cinnamon

METHOD Preheat the oven to 190C (375F, Gas Mark 5). Line some muffin pans with paper muffin cases to make approximately 20 muffins.

Add the remaining mixture 4 to the top of each muffin and roughly smooth the tops with the

back of a teaspoon dipped in warm water.

In a large bowl add the butter, 2 plain and self-raising flour, caster Top each muffin with 2 or 3 sugar, cinnamon, egg and milk and 5 slices of fresh apple. Combine stir until it has just combined. Do not the brown sugar and cinnamon and over mix.

With the first days of spring heralding the arrival of British Summer Time later this month we sent Robert Veitch to Crowhurst to unearth an absorbing route to the coast. He took his friend Donna along for the trek, to add some wit to the conversation and to count the footbridges

eaving the wide expanse of Crowhurst Station via the rear of platform 1, follow the smooth tarmac of Station Road downhill, for just over one-third of a mile, to the T-junction. Turn left into Forewood Lane and continue along the pavement for 100m, before turning left by the 1066 fingerpost. Once beyond the metal 5-bar gate, stride out across the field in the shadow of the power lines to, and

then across, the distant footbridge. Turn right, past the hardcore boulders and follow the line of Powdermill Stream and the hedge, which eventually lead to hollow grids of concrete pavers underfoot, and then a wooden 5-bar gate, beside the only stile of the day. Once over the stile turn right and follow the unmade surface of Sampson’s Lane past the homes to the junction with Sandrock Hill. Turn right, and walk carefully along the road or

By the fingerpost nestled close to the red-topped reflective roadside bollards verge for almost 150m before turning left by the fingerpost nestled close to the redtopped reflective roadside bollards. Follow the path between the fence and hedge on the right, and the stream and the George VI Recreation Ground on the left, all the way to marker post 15. Continue into the arable field and follow the path, as it emulates the gentle meanders of the stream, all the way to the kissing gate.

Beyond the kissing gate, the path leads up a very gentle incline to a post and rail fence, which offers serene views across the lake, through reeds that are starting to emerge from their winter slumber. The path leads under the Combe Valley Way, which opened in 2015, and into Combe Valley Countryside Park, emerging at a 4-way fingerpost. Turn right, and follow the track for almost half a mile, almost as far as the bridge over Watermill Stream. Bear left, down the bank to marker post 57, then through the gap between the posts, turning left to walk alongside Watermill Stream. March 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 121

“Did you know that over 100 species of bird have been recorded here,” stated Donna as a pair of honking Canada Geese flew low overhead. “Maybe we’ll see a buzzard if we’re lucky.” At marker post 56 there are footbridges on either side, but ignore both and keep going in the same general direction. A little further on, cross the footbridge, then shortly after that, pass the sluice and soothing sound of rushing water on the right. A little further on, is a wooden gate in need of a little attention, and shortly after that is a gated footbridge. Keep walking to marker post 5 then keep going for another 250m and over another footbridge to marker post 4. Bear right for a few steps to marker post 3, then turn right and amble across another gated footbridge. On the other side, at marker post 53, turn left and aim across the paddock, past the redundant kissing gate and alongside Combe Haven, over the penultimate footbridge of the day to

marker post 2. Stay parallel to Combe Haven, past the telegraph pole on the near bank and then the caravans on the opposite bank, eventually emerging at marker post 1, beside Bulverhythe Recreation Ground. Walk past the metal barrier, then down the drive

to the junction with Bexhill Road. Turn right, then cross with care at the traffic island, and continue on the other side for 250m to the junction with Bridge Way. Turn left and at the far end of Bridge Way, the steepest ascent of the day will be the steps of the footbridge. If the weather gods are forgiving, then as Donna pointed out, “You can see Beachy Head… it must be 15 miles away.”

Once down the other side of the bridge, head east and follow the shingle between the railway and the beach. The Bulverhythe beach huts en route provide a colourful counterpoint to the natural, earthy shades along the earlier sections of the walk. Keep going past the red barrier and over Combe Haven for a final time. Almost 150m past the cream coloured column, at the far end of the green area that was once the Lido, turn left into Grosvenor Gardens. At the far end, cross the main road at the zebra crossing,

As the Battle of Britain raged overhead, in the fields of Sussex below an army of young ladies was being enrolled to learn the basics of agriculture and animal husbandry, to provide a new rural workforce as Lindsey Tydeman from The Keep explains

ou can imagine the noise in this dining room… It’s 1940 and around 70 young women who have probably only just met, are sharing their first meal together and talking excitedly about the weeks ahead. From the way the waiters are hovering at the door watching the diners, it’s clear to see it’s obviously a special sitting. The women are about to embark on the shortened course designed for entrants to the Women’s Land Army during the Second World War. The government idea was for women to learn the basics

of agriculture and animal farming, and then be placed on farms around Britain to take the place of the men who had been called up for the army. Archivists at The Keep think that this photograph (ref PAC/9/1/1/1) was taken at the East Sussex School of Agriculture in Plumpton (now Plumpton Agricultural College), which had been training students since 1926. At that time both men and women were admitted as students although they weren’t taught the same things. The men’s twoterm course covered animals, crops, poultry, horticulture and bookkeeping. The women’s

one-term course covered dairying, cheese-making and the preservation of fruit and vegetables. All that changed in 1940. After their brief training, land girls were expected to take a full role on a farm, from the major agricultural tasks to the details of bee keeping, jammaking and fruit-bottling. The Keep hold a vast amount of information about Plumpton Agricultural College. Among the early prospectuses, course leaflets and menus from reunion dinners in the 1930s are some typed reminiscences by Enid Schofield, a lady who attended Plumpton soon after the

college opened in 1926. She described the dawn shift of milking the herd, feeding the calves and weighing the milk into the vats. ‘No one went to breakfast until Miss Macdonald had warmed it to the correct temperature and added the rennet’. Enid learned

And then there was the poultry dressing challenge, ‘We had to be able to kill, pluck and truss ready for the table in forty minutes’.

Enid went on to work an 800-acre farm in Berkshire during the Second World War, like her contemporaries, ‘driving the tractor, ploughing, harrowing, rolling and harvesting’. Although the farmer didn’t think much of the ‘lady from London’ who was renting his farmhouse, he later admitted that Enid had been ‘one of the best tractor drivers he had ever had.’ Even the occasional machinegunning from a passing German plane failed to curb Enid’s enthusiasm for the work. ‘All was well,’ she wrote, ‘He missed.’ l

Establishing a healthy relationship with money begins at a young age, so it’s never too early to help the younger generation develop their financial skills. Lisa de Silva has explored some ways to help children and young adults learn to save, budget and manage their money FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS The earlier a child starts to develop financial skills the better. From an early age encourage counting coins and matching the number of pennies to higher value coins, such as 10p or 50p. When out shopping explain to your child why you are choosing a less expensive brand of groceries and once they are old enough, ask them to keep a running total of what you’ve bought. This helps them to understand budgeting. Linking pocket money to chores is a

good way to teach children the value of money, how to earn it and how to save for an expensive purchase. Depending on their age you can get them a piggy bank, create charts, or use a digital tracker to watch the money grow. Older children can also be encouraged to sell unwanted items (with your help) to raise money for things they do want. This can encourage them to feel confident and independent in earning their own money.

BANK ACCOUNTS & PREPAID CARDS Bank accounts and prepaid cards are good options to help children learn about real world banking and for you to monitor what they spend. From the age of 11, a child can open a mobile-based bank account, with no overdraft facility or credit check. They come with a debit card which can be used to make purchases in shops and online. If you prefer, there is the option for a more restricted cash card, used only for cash withdrawals. Some accounts offer interest on the account balance, and this is valuable for understanding why savings are a good thing. Alternatively, a prepaid card is like a pay-as-you-go mobile phone. While these can initially incur a cost, they are available to all those over 6 years of age, if an adult applies on their behalf and the attraction is the parental control over spending limits. They work in the same way as a debit card and are useful in introducing children to banking and budgeting.

JUNIOR ISAs The best way for under-18s to save is via a junior ISA. These are tax-free savings accounts into which the child (or their families) can save and invest up to £9,000 a year. The money is locked-up until the child reaches 18, when it becomes a standard ISA to which they have full access. There are two types: Junior cash ISAs, into which cash is deposited for a defined amount of interest and Junior Stocks & Shares ISAs, where the return is dependent upon the specific investments.

The government are adding a 25% bonus to what you save each year LIFETIME ISAs (LISAs) Anyone aged 18-39 can open a LISA and can continue putting money into it until the age of 50. Savings of up to £4,000 towards either your first home or retirement, can be paid in during any one tax year. The advantage is the

he Bevern Trust runs Bevern View, a purposebuilt residential home in Barcombe, just outside Lewes, providing life-long care for eleven young adults with profound disabilities. They are passionate about releasing people from the expectations others have about disability and offer love, care, freedom, and opportunity, allowing profoundly disabled people to get more from life.

“I have worked in care my whole adult life,” Jim West, Care Manager told me. “But never before have I experienced such a unique home. I feel honoured to work in such great company and I’m so proud of the staff and residents here. Our resident’s beautiful characters shine through.” Residents have a flexible programme, which includes a wide range of physical, music, art and hydrotherapies, an in-house sensory room, active reading times, wellbeing groups, and learning opportunities such as running a weekly café. The hotly contested Glow Bowling Championship is a huge hit with residents, each vying to win the coveted golden trophy! All the residents have especially enjoyed the new opportunities to go on outings since Covid-19 restrictions have eased and favourite trips have included

Eastbourne seafront, local garden centres, Stanmer Park and meeting with family and friends for lunch. Jim told me about one of their residents, Chloe. She is a young lady full of energy and happiness who loves to sing and shout along to musicals and 70s soul. “Chloe is 90% non-verbal, but she has brilliant comic timing; she drops in her ‘oh no!’ just at the right time to make the whole group laugh!” said Jim.

Chloe loves the water so they have made her a virtual reality experience where she is swimming in the ocean All the residents have breakfast and lunch together to enjoy time as a group. After breakfast Chloe heads to the Orientation Group, where the Communication Team sing with her using Makaton (a signing language). Each resident has three or four songs specific to them, using their name. Then Chloe enjoys grounding exercises which include gentle massage and pressure (with her permission) and breathing exercises – smelling the flowers and blowing out candles – to help her identify herself in space and time. Chloe particularly enjoys massage and pamper sessions and can’t wait to go out and get her hair and makeup done again. Tim and Immy are the amazing activities team who create bespoke activities for each resident and give

them fully immersive sensory fun. For example, Chloe loves the water, so they have made her a virtual reality experience where she is swimming in the ocean with wind and sea spray in her face. Then she can watch it on video and enjoy it all again! Afternoon activities might include outings where Chloe will be riding her trike in nature or a hydro pool session, which is brilliant for her posture, muscle

structure and tone. Chloe also likes being with her friend Amy and living life to the full – she is a fun loving girl! “The residents have coped amazingly well during Covid-19 restrictions to family and friend visits,” Jim told me. Thankfully visits can now take place in the resident’s large rooms, and even in dedicated communal rooms which they book out.

She immediately settled down, either in with me, in my bed, or occasionally, actually in her own bed. Sorted, for Bear at least! Sleep is important, and, if I say so myself, something I am rather good at. I even look cute whilst I am doing it, which, to be frank, is more than can be said for ‘Them Indoors.’ And I never have any trouble sleeping whilst ‘Them Indoors’ fuss over different weight duvets, windows open or shut and blackout linings to the curtains. My problem isn’t so much the getting to sleep but the waking up, particularly if I am expected to go out walking in inclement conditions. Still, as the mornings are getting lighter and the birds are starting to sing, who knows, I might actually be tempted to arise, if you’ll excuse the pun, with a spring in my step! l

IFasYOU k me... WHAT’S IN A WORD? FRANKLY, IT’S HARD TO KNOW THESE DAYS, SAYS SELF-CONFESSED WORD GEEK, FLO WHITAKER

I recently encountered a young person who declared he was “super-stoked” to meet me. I had no idea what this meant, but, as he was friendly and chatty, I decided the term was probably a good thing. I’ve since discovered that this is, indeed, a positive reference. As a fellow gardener, we had an animated conversation, with wishes expressed on both sides to meet again. That’s one of the joys of gardening – plants don’t care about social rules, age, or gender, and friendships can be forged in the most unlikely situations. The encounter got me thinking about the English language. One reason why it continues to have a global significance is because it’s so flexible and adaptable. Yep, there are grammatical rules – but you can break ’em, (like wot I just did) and your words will still be understood. The British Isles has always been a melting pot for languages, but it’s the pace of change nowadays that is astonishing. Dozens of new words are invented daily. Some are immediately discarded, while others ‘catch the zeitgeist’ on social media – and a brand-new word is born. I’m amused, but also bewildered by this; especially by ‘new’ words that are repurposed to mean the exact opposite. A person described as “really baaad”, is, apparently, a fundamentally decent human being. And have you noticed the changes in cookery terminology? In the previous millennium, ‘wilted’, ‘torn’ and ‘crushed’ indicated sub-standard produce. Nowadays, if our steak isn’t sufficiently ‘deep-charred’ and the lettuce aggressively ‘ripped’ to shreds, we demand a refund.
