SUSSEX PERSONALITY

Some FA Cup finals disappear into the mists of time, some remain etched in the memory forever. Robert Veitch met up with former Arsenal manager Terry Neill to relive one of the greatest finales in FA Cup history

The Five Minute Final

WITH TERRY NEILL B

ack in May 1979, a new broom had swept into Downing Street, Art Garfunkel was at number one with a song about rabbits, and Terry Neill, the youngest manager in Arsenal’s history was returning to Wembley for a date with Manchester United, the FA Cup, and destiny. Wind the clock forward 40 years and Terry is opposite me, recalling what became known as “The Five Minute Final.”

We had a TV reporter embedded Wolves in the semi. The night before the final, we had with us, making the journey from a relaxed team meal in the hotel at the hotel to Wembley Stadium Bisham Abbey, a bit of banter between

Terry reminisced, “Back then there was no extra time and penalties, just replays. We took five games to get past Sheffield Wednesday in the 3rd round. We beat Notts County in the 4th round, Nottingham Forest in the 5th, Southampton in the quarter-final and

friends. There was no curfew or rules because I trusted the players, they were all good professionals.” On match day, after breakfast, it was time to don the cup final suits and board the coach. “We had a TV reporter embedded with us, making

Nothern Ireland Vs England in Belfast 1964. The teams are led out by Terry Neill and Bobby Moore, with George Best and Gordon Banks following

the journey from the hotel to Wembley Stadium,” he recalled. Driving up Wembley Way at walking pace was something to behold, through masses of fans, supporting both sides, mingling together. Terry told me, “The regalia of the day was everywhere; banners, flags, homemade FA Cups, but far fewer replica kits back then. Everyone, regardless of which team they supported was in a good mood, desperately hoping it was going to be their day. Players acknowledged the fans, soaking up the atmosphere. There were no dark sunglasses, no mobiles or headphones back then – the players were more approachable. It was a terrific experience.” The traditional pre-match walkabout on the hallowed Wembley turf took place, and then it was down to business.

Alan Sunderland wheeling away in celebration, arms raised, head shaking like a disbelieving schoolboy remains the iconic moment of the day “We didn’t have selection issues, because our squad generally knew who was playing, it was usually the same starting eleven. We had a squad of 20 players for the 1978-79 season, and played 60 games. But it was the same for all the teams back then. Our physio, Fred Street, who was the England physio for Don Revie, Ron Greenwood, Sir Bobby Robson and Graham Taylor said to me years later, ‘How did we manage in those days? You, me and Don Howe, up to 70 games a season with only 15 regular players.’ I didn’t fear the Manchester

A family holiday to Orlando

United players, because our players were of a similar calibre. My coach, Don Howe and I would point out the various strengths and weaknesses of our opponents, but there was no fear. Have faith in your own players, they’re the stars.” When the bell went, the gladiators left their dressing rooms, led to the cauldron by their managers. Both Terry and Manchester United counterpart Dave Sexton were at ease, chatting

and laughing as they made their way across the pitch. The teams lined up, the national anthem played and Prince Charles was introduced to the players. The coin toss took place and then it was game on… The hottest day of the year was unlikely to create a high tempo game, but an intriguing chess match ensued. By half time Arsenal were 2-0 up, with goals from Brian Talbot and Frank Stapleton. The second half mirrored the first, but without the goals. Then towards the end, it all changed, it became memorable for all the right reasons. The energy sapping Wembley pitch played a part, as did the heat. Players’ socks were rolled down, shin pads were removed, and hands were on hips as players inhaled deeply hankering for breath. Carry on, carry on, nothing else matters, this is the FA Cup, the opportunity might never come again. In those days, the management team and support staff sat on simple wooden benches, out in the open, a long way

from the plush comfy seats of today. With five minutes of regulation time left, Terry wasn’t complacent; “The game could still be turned on its head, I knew there was time for that. Manchester United were in the ascendancy during the second half.” He was right, Gordon McQueen scored for United in the 86th minute, then Sammy McIlroy equalised in the 88th. “At 2-2 I did the best acting I’ve ever done in my life,” Terry remembered. “I knew where the TV cameras were. After losing to Bobby Robson’s Ipswich Town the year before, I knew cameras would be on me. I didn’t want to be seen as a serial cup final loser. I disguised my

Pitchside with Pele

At 2-2 I did the best acting I’ve ever done in my life true feelings as best I could.” Terry didn’t look at me as he talked – he was in another place. His eyes were looking through me, reliving the past, looking across the Wembley turf more than half a lifetime later. Viscerally experiencing those coruscating moments again, the tension was etched in his face. And then he came back to me. “Liam Brady was a super player, his run to set up that winning goal was superb, drawing players onto him, playing a pass to Graham Rix that demanded to be crossed. It was a brilliant cross, arcing away from United keeper Gary Bailey, putting him in an impossible situation.

It was dipping too, onto the right foot of Alan Sunderland, who was arriving at speed, at the far post. It was the 89th minute. Alan Sunderland wheeling away in celebration, arms raised, head shaking like a disbelieving schoolboy remains the iconic moment of the day. When Sunderland scored the Arsenal bench erupted, Terry’s arms aloft in exultation, “I just couldn’t hold myself back.” Tension released, he straightened his tie and sat back down… there was still a minute to go. “What an amazing cup final”, exclaimed Brian Moore on the ITV commentary. “Sunderland… it’s there… it’s 3-2”, screamed John Motson on the BBC. Terry picked up the story. “At the sound of the final whistle my heart

was bleeding for Dave Sexton, he was experiencing what I had the previous year. He was a great man, a wonderful man. He congratulated me and I was saying sorry to him, commiserating with him. There was a certain sort of camaraderie back then.” After the match players from both sides were interviewed together in front of blue velvet curtains, swigging milk from old-fashioned pint bottles. The managers were interviewed side by side. A contrast to interviews in front of sponsorship laden boards with the media savvy players of today. “We had a few drinks to celebrate that night, including champagne from the FA Cup. We also did what all teams did back then – an open top bus ride the following day – parading the trophy through the streets of Islington in front of thousands of fans.” The day after the day after had its own tale too. “I was back at Highbury, with Ken Friar the Club Secretary. Ken said it was too late to put the trophy in the safe because it was locked for the night. So I popped it in the boot of my car and drove home. When I got there my daughters greeted me. I got the FA Cup out of the boot and showed it to them. “Well done Daddy,” they go, “but it’s all mucky and dirty.” Because of course, it hadn’t been cleaned since the

The 1984 fundraising climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro

celebrations began. We spent the rest of the day at our neighbours and the FA Cup spent more time in their swimming pool than it did on dry land.“ “I live in Hurstpierpoint these days and still see some of the players from time to time. They were a great bunch of guys. I still go and watch the Arsenal, they’re still my team. I’m from Northern Ireland, a beautiful little town called Bangor where there’s no big I am. We have a good work ethic. 1979 might be what I get remembered for, but it’s not my greatest moment. That was the gift of life itself from my parents, and then having two daughters of my own.” Over the years Terry has contributed

to several charities. In the 1960s in Northern Ireland during ‘The Troubles’ it was low-key. In 1984 he helped raise £80,000 for the Sick Children’s Trust after leading a team to Kilimanjaros’ summit. Terry ran the Belfast Marathon for Barnardo’s and the London Marathon for Great Ormond Street Hospital. In 1996 Terry toured Burkina Faso and Ghana with Frank Skinner and David Baddiel amongst others for Comic Relief’s ‘Balls to Africa’ campaign. Now in his late 70s Terry continues to support good causes. And with that we headed for the park, bouncing a ball as we went. Jumpers for goalposts, smiles in the sunshine, anyone fancy a kickabout? l

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

ALZHEIMER’S

Melissa Luckin tells us about High Trees, her parent’s beautiful garden opening in June this year for Alzheimer’s Research UK

GARDENING WITH HEART H

igh Trees Garden in Seaford will be opening its gates again this year on Saturday 29th June to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, following its successful inaugural opening for the charity in 2018. Garden owners, Susan and Tony Luckin have been opening their garden annually since 2013, raising funds for charitable causes including Seaford in Bloom, the Seaford Mayor’s Trail and the National Garden Scheme. In the first year opening its gates to the public, High Trees garden scooped four awards in the Seaford in Bloom Competition: ‘Best Back Garden’, ‘Best New Entry’, ‘Best Hanging Basket’ and ‘Best Overall Entry.’ The garden raised a total of £1300 for charity in 2018, with £875 raised for Alzheimer’s Research UK. The couple wanted to support Alzheimer’s Research UK in memory of Susan’s mother, Daisy, who lived with vascular dementia and passed away in 2017 after celebrating her 100th birthday. “Living with dementia is a terrible disease which affects not only the individual but their whole family. By sharing our love of gardening with others, we are able to open our garden and raise funds to contribute to vital research that hopefully will one day cure this awful illness for future generations,” says Susan. Visitors will be able to enjoy the beautiful gardens, the secret woodland and the serene koi pond as well as discovering a brand new feature in the

courtyard for 2019. “We like to add something new to the garden each year to provide interest and a new focal point to attract regular visitors as well as newcomers,” says Tony. Tea and delicious homemade cakes served on vintage china will be baked once again by Dominic Avey, Young Mayor of Seaford, which proved a huge success in 2018. There will also be plants and homemade cards for sale, as well as a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses. All proceeds from the event will go to Alzheimer’s Research UK, which powers world class studies focusing on

at Alzheimer’s Research UK said: “We are so grateful to Susan and Tony for supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK once again by opening up their beautiful garden. Dementia affects a significant proportion of the population, yet wonderful fundraising efforts such as this will help us to deliver those lifechanging research breakthroughs for people with dementia.” l

By sharing our love of gardening with others, we are able to raise funds for vital research prevention, diagnosis and treatments for dementia. There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, one in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition. DEMENTIA

Dementia Friendly

WORKPLACES

Jacqui Smith from the Haywards Heath Dementia Action Alliance tells us how to make our work places dementia friendly environments, where some simple changes can make a big difference

W

hether at home or at work, a person’s environment will have a massive impact on their health and wellbeing; for someone living with dementia, this is especially significant. There are many different types of dementia, each with differing symptoms but the main challenges are: difficulty in remembering things; struggling to work things out (cognitive impairment); finding it hard to learn new things; the general changes that come with age but a reduced ability to understand them and cope with them and generally heightened levels of stress. This is by no means an exhaustive list but here are a few suggestions on how changes in the built environment can provide support. People living with dementia need to feel as familiar with their surroundings as possible and clear and easy to understand signage is vital. Ensure that entrances and exits are clearly marked and visible and that routes out as well as in to spaces such as WCs are easy to navigate. Increasing light levels for somebody

with deteriorating vision and dementia can make a world of difference. Maximise natural light by keeping curtains and blinds clear of the window. Paint the room a lighter colour and ensure that it is well lit including task lighting like desk lamps to aid close work. Glare can be an issue whether from sunlight streaming through the window at certain times of the day or

an artificial light source with a bulb on show. Both can cause discomfort and disorientation. A person with dementia may also experience impaired hearing. I know myself how since losing the sight in my left eye, a busy office can have me shutting my eyes before speaking, to enable me to concentrate properly. For a person with dementia too much noise will exacerbate the inability to think, so simply considering the general background noise in an environment and how it might be turned off or down will help a person to formulate thoughts and lessen overwhelm. Contrasts in floor surfaces can appear like a step to a person with dementia and might cause a person to trip or make them nervous about walking over it. Dark door mats in the hall against a lighter floor can appear like a hole. When considering hard floor surfaces they should be matte to avoid glare; a shiny tiled floor in bright sunlight can look wet and cause confusion. Ideally the flooring throughout a building should be similar in tone regardless of the surface. Colour contrast helps to highlight a switch or rail. Skirting painted to contrast with the floor defines the edges of a corridor and contrast grab rails in WCs makes them easy to see. Some thought and simple changes to our environment can make a big difference to people with dementia in the workplace. l

Contrasts in floor surfaces can appear like a step to a person with dementia and might cause a person to trip

Let’s talk

SPORT! Talking and reminiscence is good for our memories and our well-being. Come and talk sport with some fellow enthusiasts, says Linda Bowen, and keep your mind fit and active

A

s a Sporting Nation we spend a large portion of our lives talking about sporting events. We have many sports in common that we don’t even think about – you may watch the London Marathon or the Olympics but never be interested in running! Knowing the current score, league position or who scored what goal, is information we often pick up during our normal day. So much information, so many memories! There is medical evidence that reminiscence is good for us, improving well-being and confidence. The Sporting Memories foundation has developed reminiscence activities that improve the mental and physical well-being of all older people (50+) through tapping into their passion, knowledge and love of sport. Sporting Memories clubs have been running all over the country for a number of years and have now come

to Sussex. Following the success of the club at the Sussex Cricket Museum in Hove, there are two new groups now in Worthing and soon to start in Polegate. They are open to anyone over the age of 50 who likes Sport, and enjoys

There is always great fun and laughter and you never know where the discussion will go

reminiscing about their experiences of watching or playing any sport. Sporting Memories provide amazing resources that can prompt discussion. They have a huge library of audio and visual memories from many sporting legends and some members also bring their own memorabilia to show and discuss. There is always great fun and laughter and you never know where the discussion will go. The clubs will take place each week and are guaranteed to have a really friendly, welcoming environment. Many of our existing members attend to enjoy the company of other older sports fans, some of our members live with memory problems or physical challenges, all have one thing in common, a love for sport! The clubs will incorporate a little fun activity such as skittles and we are hoping to forge links with other clubs such as Walking Football, Walking Netball and Walking Cricket in the areas. The sessions are a great way to meet new people, chat, and have a brew in a friendly and welcoming environment, all the while improving your health! l HOVE GROUP When: EVERY TUESDAY, 10.00am – 11.30am Where: Sessions are held in the Sussex Cricket Museum, 1st Central County Cricket Ground, Eaton Road, Hove, Sussex BN3 3AN Full disabled access and facilities. Something us nonathletes can also tap into. Because of its endorphin boosting associations, flotation can also help with pain relief, both chronic and temporary. As the body is completely suspended, all stress and weight bearing is taken off the joints and muscles. Unsurprisingly, pregnant women and the elderly in particular can benefit from this effect. This complete suspension in water also mimics the same sense of relaxation achieved in deep sleep, which in turn allows the body to heal, clear toxins and improve the immune response. CAST ADRIFT The sense of peace achieved from 60 minutes in a flotation tank cannot be overstated. Your mind is literally cast adrift and free to roam, usually ending up in a deep state of tranquillity and meditation. So when’s your next float? l

Offering help and support where you need it most is paramount to Sight Support Worthing. Ruth Lawrence went along to find out what it’s all about

W

e interpret much of our world through our eyes so if our sight begins to falter, expert support is required. I went to meet Frances Pritchard and Joe Butcher of Sight Support in Worthing, a charity that has been helping people deal with sight loss for over a century. “We offer support and we want to encourage people to come in,” Frances told me before adding that many younger people who may be struggling with visual impairment may not be aware of the help they can access. Joe’s role is to engage with people and introduce them to the tools and resources the charity can offer, all freely available to use at home. “Social inclusion is very important; we have transport and a

A vision of the future car and can take people out or bring them here,” said Frances. The centre itself has numerous activities including crafts, music appreciation, exercise and themed events and offers a befriending service run by dedicated volunteers. Membership is completely free and offers help on many levels while being open to ideas and suggestions; most people discover the centre themselves or through a friend although many are referred by rehabilitation officers for the visually impaired.

The main purpose of the centre is to support people in connecting with others and increase their quality of life On June 1st, there is going to be an awareness raising day in Montague Place in Worthing town centre which will include fun activities, a singer and an ‘eye pod’ from Manchester which will be staffed by the RNIB. The eye pod is a simulator which will be positioned facing the sea front and allows normally sighted people to

experience the effects of different eye conditions which will be superimposed onto their view of the promenade. Bob Smytherman, the Town Crier and president of Sight Support Worthing will be there and people will be able to meet the team and get all the info they need to access help and support. The centre’s ‘triobike’ will be there, which is effectively a couch on wheels which bowls along the prom, driven by volunteers. It even has a name, ‘Rosemary’ named after a lady in memory of her legacy. The day will be about making people aware of looking after their eyes and how much help there is for those dealing with visual impairment and sight loss. The centre offers another unusual

service by collecting plastic milk bottle tops, which are sent to a recycling company who transform them into children’s toys; people can drop them at the centre to be recycled. The main purpose of the centre is to support people in connecting with others and increase their quality of life. People needing help getting to appointments or activities can access the centre’s car and minibus, all driven by volunteers, more of which are always needed to help run this essential service. Go along to the event on June 1st to find out more and discover how Sight Support can help you or a friend get the most out of life with visual impairment and find out how much help is waiting. l sightsupportworthing.org.uk

Guild Care becomes the sole provider of contracted ‘Take time for you’ respite and short breaks for carers services in Worthing West Sussex County Council has awarded its respite and short breaks for carers contract in Worthing to local charity Guild Care. The charity currently provides a range of ‘Time Out’ services for carers and people they care for, particularly those living with dementia. These services include group activities based at its Bradbury Wellbeing Centre and its Guild Care Centre, group outings in the local community, and a range of

social opportunities for people to go out together. They are all provided with support from well-trained and caring staff, in a safe, secure and caring environment. The new contract awarded by WSCC means that Guild Care will now be able to expand its ‘Time Out’ services for carers and the people they care for across Worthing. Suzanne Millard, Guild Care’s CEO said: “We are really delighted that we have been awarded the contract to deliver respite and short breaks for carers in Worthing. Guild Care has a long tradition of supporting people with dementia, and the elderly. We know the expansion of our services will make a real difference to carers in Worthing giving them the break from caring that they need to recharge their batteries and have some time to themselves.” To find out more about Guild Care’s ‘Time Out’ services for carers please contact the Customer Services Team on 01903 327 327 or email enquiry@guildcare.org

Harnessing radical thinking and some lambs, Jamie Feilden set about changing the way disadvantaged children are taught. He tells Ruth Lawrence about how Jamie’s Farm was born and where they are today

BE THE

ocial and academic exclusion are the reality for many young people today. As a result those children are finding it difficult to discover their potential as adults and their wellbeing and employability suffer. So how can we stop this? Could farming be the answer? Back in 2005, Jamie Feilden was teaching in a Croydon comprehensive; shocked by the lack of engagement he was witnessing, he decided to bring some lambs from his farm in Wiltshire into the school for pupils to look after.

It immediately became clear that the children with the greatest social difficulties benefited most from the sense of responsibility required in nurturing these young animals. He decided, along with his mother, Tish, who had 30 years of experience as a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist, to develop a method using farming, family and therapy to invite children to participate in during weeklong visits to the family home. They gave the youngsters real jobs with real purpose, which, when combined with therapy and a loving framework of support, sparked

60% of the youngsters are no longer at risk of exclusion and 67% report improved self-esteem powerful, long reaching results. Once thirty five pilot weeks had proved how successful their approach was, they realised they needed a farm converted specifically for purpose. The first ‘Jamie’s Farm’ was launched near Bath in 2009 and remains the charity’s HQ; ten years later there are four rural farms and a city farm in Waterloo, the most recent, here in Sussex, sits in May 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 33

There will be practical conversations about how to succeed after they return; most of the young people are from urban areas and this is usually the first time they have experienced tending for animals in a rural environment. After their transformative time at the farm they are supported in re-engaging in their school and community with the help of their teachers. Their parents are sent a letter outlining

The farm will be largely self sufficient, growing its own food and raising meat and milk from its own herds beautiful countryside near Lewes. I met Jamie at Allington Farm, a classic red brick Sussex house which oozes homeliness and hospitality, nestled among fields beneath the nearby rolling South Downs. Jamie explained how visiting children will be given responsible tasks on the 200 acre farm which will boost their self-esteem and, when combined with therapy and family life, will enable them to take what they have experienced back to their own lives across the south coast, Kent and South London.

their achievements and six weeks later, there is a review of how changes are being sustained. The results speak for themselves: after six months, 60% of the youngsters are no longer at risk of exclusion and 67% report improved self-esteem as a result of their stay at Jamie’s Farm. Allington Farm is a real working farm, stocked with 300 ewes, cows, goats, pigs and chickens for the youngsters to engage with. Eventually there will also be horses for equine therapy. The farm will be largely self

sufficient, growing its own food and raising meat and milk from its own herds, and will employ five full time and two part time staff. Jamie’s Farm has been named 2019 Charity of the Year for the South of England Agricultural Society and Jamie admits he has been overwhelmed by the positive response and welcome the team have had from the people of Sussex since putting down roots here. Setting up a concern as ambitious and far reaching as this needs funds and Jamie outlined the many practical requirements the farm will be seeking from people who would be able to

These are children and young adults who have spent time at the other farms and developed in confidence to the point where they were helping to launch this project. I spoke to sixteenyear-old Georgie (which incidentally means ‘farmer’), a young man from London brimming with newly discovered potential, now keen to work

in farming or start his own business. He told me the Jamie’s Farm Ambassador programme has helped him work out that he enjoys being a leader as it gives him more responsibility and his suggestions are listened to. He explained how “everyone is very open, warm and loving here; you can be who you want to be and not be scrutinised which gives me the potential to be myself.” He appreciated the fact that “people listen to you like family and having one to one attention is a real bonus.” During his times on the farms Georgie told me he had come to discover that, “It’s easier to be myself after being here; I used to be antisocial and this has helped me come out of my shell and express how I feel.” He felt the experience has also given him “respect for the food on my plate because you learn how much effort it takes to rear lamb.” He mentioned how living at the farm helped him create a second family which he wants to make as good as it can be. Hearing how a young person like Georgie has benefited so much from

simply being listened to, being given responsibility and having a sense of cohesive interaction with others was humbling; testimonials like his are the proof that Jamie’s Farms are working brilliantly at what they set out to do. These farms are transforming young lives and the long term effects of their work are valuable beyond measure. Allington Farm will become a launch pad for the wellbeing of youngsters across the region to take part in creating a better society and a brighter future. l www.jamiesfarm.org.uk

BLOOMING TIMES

Incredible Edibles

Some plants have got the lot – they look good and do you good. Flo Whitaker recommends planting some handsome vegetables in your flower borders

T

here are reasons why a traditional vegetable garden looks the way it does. Centuries of trial and error has come up with a system that’s hard to beat. Crops grown in neat rows take up less space and are easier to water and harvest, but if there’s no room in your garden for a designated veg plot you can still grow some vegetables. Many have great ornamental qualities and can be mingled through the flower borders to good effect. The yields will

be smaller this way, but it’s always fun to grow a few edibles. Carrots have elegant, border-worthy foliage. The small ball-type varieties don’t require much depth of soil and can also be grown in a container; likewise radishes, which are very quick to crop. Incidentally, radish flowers are beautiful – a few roots left unharvested will produce delicate flowers in gentle mauve and cream shades. Wigwam supports are quick and easy to make. Use bamboo canes or hazel poles firmly bound at the top with string. Each support needs to be spaced approximately 20 cms from its neighbour and pushed 15cms into the soil (keep that in mind when considering the eventual height of the plants you want to support!). A tall wigwam of French or runner beans makes a bold statement in a border. The annual climber, Ipomoea lobata, (‘Spanish Flag’) can be combined with runner beans. Vigorous by nature, it will easily keep up with the rapid

Lettuces and violas make surprisingly companionable bedfellows

growth of the bean plants and bears unusual blooms in graduating shades of red/orange/yellow. Mangetout peas have dainty flowers, are easy to grow and will quickly scramble up a support. Some varieties have snazzy pink or purple pods. Courgettes and squash can be trained up a wigwam or over a trellis arch. Some gardeners actually prefer this method, reckoning the additional airflow makes for less mildew/rot problems. Make sure your supports are sturdy as these plants will become heavy as they start to crop. Cut-and-come-again lettuce is surely the easiest vegetable of all. It’s best grown in a patio pot where the leaves will remain cleaner. Beetroot seedlings are my latest salady-obsession. You’ll require a seed tray filled with general purpose compost, sharp scissors and a heart of stone, for once you’ve snipped and harvested the cress-like leaves, the seedlings die – but they are so delicious, with the distinctive taste and colour of mature beetroot. They look fabulous scattered over a green salad. Lettuces and violas aren’t an obvious combination, but make surprisingly companionable bedfellows. Violas enjoy the shade cast by the developing lettuces and if you grow dark-leaved lettuce, really interesting colour combinations may occur. Viola flowers are edible and make a pretty garnish for summer cordials – or a G&T! l

Hurstpierpoint Open Gardens returns this year on Sunday 2nd June, and as Prue Heron tells us, they are well worth a visit

A

fter a rest for Hurst gardeners and us organisers last year, we are back with renewed determination this year and have now set the date for the Open Gardens. The buzzing Hurstpierpoint Open Gardens will be held on Sunday 2nd June from 13:00 to 17:30. Please put the date in your diaries as the event promises to have lots of variety and something to please everyone, from lawns, to beds to veg galore. Around 8 gardens will open for charity, and, as before, we’ll be raising money for our local St Peter & St James Hospice. We can’t think of a better cause which has touched most of our lives at some time and which so depends on our support. Would you be willing to open your garden this year? We are still looking for one gardener – especially in the College Lane, Hurst Road to Langton Lane areas. It doesn’t have to be perfect or weed free – it just has to offer something interesting for people to look at! We would also very much welcome donations of plants to sell on our plant stall and, of course, cakes, cakes, cakes! As before there will be some gardens selling teas, coffees, cakes and plants. Also one with live music and items to buy made by local artisans, and there will be luxury transport on tap for you this year. l You can contact the organisers by email prue.heron@btopenworld.com or phone 01273 835064. Now a nationally renowned garden opening and raising thousands for charity, Ruth Lawrence talks to the man behind Driftwood in Seaford, Geoff Stonebanks

PIC: JOHN GLOVER

O

ne of Sussex Living’s very own contributors, Geoff Stonebanks, has created a nationally renowned garden from an exposed site close to the coast at Seaford and I went along to find out how he has conjured so much magic from such a compact plot. After looking at 140 properties, Geoff and his partner Mark found and purchased ‘Driftwood’, a 1930s house overlooking the sea and started gardening with only limited knowledge and no real plan in mind. Over the years the garden has evolved into a haven bursting with 1600 varieties of plants and shrubs. They first opened to the public for the first time for Seaford in Bloom after friends kept suggesting that people would love to see it. By 2012, Driftwood was opening on its

The garden has welcomed 20,000 visitors and raised a staggering £114,000 for charity own for the National Garden Scheme and won Best Small Garden of the Year in the Garden News Awards and became a finalist out of 1200 entries in a national newspaper garden

competition. Hamish Webb, one of the judges praised the garden as being “up there with the best” after seeing hundreds of gardens over his 21 years of judging the competition. After being featured by most of the major dailies weekend magazines and having slots on national TV, the garden has welcomed 20,000 visitors so far and raised a staggering £114,000 for charity over the years. Primarily, the money raised by the Driftwood Fundraising Group has been focused on Macmillan Cancer Support and in 2018, Geoff was invited to a Macmillan Cancer Support Reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by HRH Prince of Wales. A few months later, Geoff was invited to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and took his 91 year old mother Barbara, who wore a splendid hat which was immediately noticed by Camilla after Prince Charles shook her hand! In the same year, Geoff was awarded the Don Mabey Award for “exceptional services to the town of Seaford” presented by the mayor, Cllr Linda Wallraven. Geoff admits that the garden has “changed his life” and is constantly “amazed at the impact a garden can have on your life.” He has had coach visits from Sweden, a group of ladies visiting from Tokyo and a family who travelled from Beijing to see the garden. Although Geoff has never regarded himself as an expert, he hosts a personal guided tour of the garden, detailing the story of its development with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support. This year, Driftwood will be opening for five garden events including ‘Art in the Garden’ where twelve artists’ work will be creatively displayed in the beach inspired setting. Homemade teas and cakes and light lunches will be served on vintage china in the garden and a grand raffle for artist donated prizes will support Macmillan, with over £65,000 raised for them to date. Make a visit to this legendary garden a priority this year; it is a truly transformative place, guaranteed to inspire and gladden the heart in equal measure. l www.driftwoodbysea.co.uk

“Everything on the 17th Century farm has evolved organically – the cottages were planned from the outset but everything else has happened accidentally. We bought the farm, very conscious that we needed to respect it. Converting it to an organic, eco-friendly environment has been a great way to protect it for the future,” says Lisa

City dwellers choosing to move away from hectic urban locations, in search of rural tranquility is fast becoming the norm. However, for Toby Smallpiece and his wife Lisa O’Connor transforming 140-acre Hawthbush Farm from a time-worn wreck into an extended modern day family space, with a growing number of outbuildings and projects, has pushed the boundaries of ordinary to extraordinary.

Since buying the farm in 2009, they have converted outbuildings, introduced shepherd’s huts and safari tents; turned the farm organic; protected ancient woodlands and meadows; and use their natural spring water, organic herbs and plants sourced from their land. Central to everything is the renovated and extended farmhouse, that Toby and Lisa share with their son Zac, daughter, Didi and cocker spaniels, Nettle and Binker. What makes the move interesting is their motivations: “For Toby it was

providing a temporary base whilst renovations began on the farmhouse. “We chose our architect carefully,” says Lisa. “His utilitarian design blends perfectly amongst the existing farm buildings and the steel curved roof of the new extension snuggles up to the original house without making it disappear. The glass linkway enables both old and new to stand proud as separate entities,” Lisa explains. In the new extension a large open plan family space combines kitchen, informal dining area, snug and playroom. With a central fireplace and a vast expanse of folding glass doors there is a wonderful sense of light and connection with nature. Upstairs the wood lined arched roof is home to the master bedroom suite, complete with a magnificent 180-degree vista window. “The new space is incredible – it’s our own personal sanctuary,” says Lisa. “At night the original structure comes into its own with the low ceilings, small windows and more cocooned feel of the sitting room and dining room creating a cosy retreat for family and entertaining,” says Lisa. abound throughout – reflecting Lisa’s eye for contemporary meets traditional. Upstairs the children sleep in two of the original bedrooms; and a former master bedroom and bathroom have been converted into a new family bathroom and staircase gateway. “We have lowered floors, re-insultated the roof and walls, taken out the old kitchen and knocked down a study wall to create a larger sitting room space,” says Lisa. The farmhouse uses a clean air system to pull warm fresh air into the house and all the buildings are fed by solar panels, a communal wood chip boiler and natural spring water from the farm’s own source – unearthed by Lisa with the help of a dowser. “The use of natural materials was important and everything is non-toxic,” says Lisa. “Electrics are encased in copper to reduce electropollution; paints are clay based; beds organic, and materials all natural fibres.” Seven years on the farm has become prosperous and Lisa has made a full recovery. “We are enjoying family country life to the max – it’s the busiest we have ever been, but the happiest and healthiest too,” laughs Lisa. l Photos: Emma Lewis/Narratives Styling & Writing: Ali Heath/Narratives

LOCATION

Land of the From one of the first inoculation houses to a pioneering social experiment to house the poor, Ruth Lawrence discovers how Lindfield is overflowing with history and culture

T

he first view of Lindfield, approaching from the south is of a cluster of period houses gathered snugly round the perimeter of a picture perfect duck pond. It’s the archetypal English village and has origins stretching back almost 1300 years. A Saxon charter of 765AD referred to ‘Lindefeldia’, or ‘open land of lime trees’ and in 1343 King Edward III granted the town a royal charter to hold a Thursday market and two annual week long fairs. These fairs continued for centuries and the summer event became one of the largest sheep sales in Sussex. In the 18th century, diseases were rife and smallpox often proved fatal; it was in Lindfield that early inoculations against the disease were practiced by Dr John Dutton who lived in the village in the 1730s. This process was in its infancy, initiated by Lady Mary Wortly Montagu who had discovered that in Turkey, healthy people were deliberately infected with smallpox and inoculated with a small amount of pus. She introduced the concept of inoculation to Britain and a few pioneering doctors, including Dutton adopted the procedure. In 1744, he and his wife Elizabeth purchased a large country house and land called Cripland and established it as a ‘pest house’, where sufferers were kept away from healthy people. He began inoculating people in the village with smallpox

Limes

pus to help them against outbreaks but unfortunately, many did not understand what he was trying to achieve and he was required to halt the practice. He was asked to enter into a £600 bond with a term of sixty years payable if he began inoculating again. He complied with the arrangement and sold the land

King Edward III granted the town a royal charter to hold a Thursday market and two annual week long fairs in 1767 although it continued to be known as Pest House Farm until the late 1880s when it reverted to Cripland Farm. In the 1820s the village again became the scene of a social experiment, this time the fight was against poverty. William Allen, an eminent Quaker, philanthropist

and social reformer wished to establish colonies of cottages for poor agricultural labourers with allotments for rent and Lindfield was chosen as the place for a pioneering colony because poverty was so rife. He established 12 dwellings, six modest single storey thatched cottages and six larger cottages, each with one and a quarter acres of land. Three pairs of semi detached cottages with land were built nearby and immediately became known as ‘The Colony’ and also ‘America’, inspired by the idea of land as a promise for settlers. The

JACKSON-STOPS

The boys are back from town! Toby Whittome and Guy Kelsey are bringing forty years of prime central London property experience to Mid Sussex. They tell Lizzie Leigh why it feels good to be working in the area they live in and love

S

pending time with Toby and Guy is like being in the company of trusted old friends. We meet for coffee at their wonderful new premises at 66 High Street in Lindfield, which will open shortly as the fortyseventh Jackson-Stops estate agency branch in the UK. Like many of their buyers, the moving-in process is proving an exceptionally busy time for the pair, but come the end of April their doors will be open for business - and they’re excited. “It’s been pretty hectic, but we had a very clear idea of what we were looking to achieve,” says Toby. “We wanted the space to reflect all that the Jackson-Stops brand stands for: approachability, integrity, firstclass ‘old school’ personal service at its best, but with a proactive, forward-thinking approach that sets us apart in today’s market.”

The pair have accumulated over forty years of experience in prime central London, where Jackson-Stops has a large network of offices. Until recently, both were based in the Chelsea branch: Toby heading up the central London sales team and Guy running the high net worth property acquisition department. However, both share a deep love of Sussex, with Toby being born, bred and educated here, and having lived for several years just outside Lindfield with his young family. Guy has visited the area regularly since he was a young boy, has loved spending time with friends and family and is passionate about the Sussex countryside. “Having cut our teeth in London, we always knew we wanted to return to this area. The beautiful countryside, quintessential villages and excellent towns, all containing

a superb range of properties, are perfectly accompanied by the fabulous sense of community that you find all over Sussex. When you consider that the area also has strong local business, excellent ‘commuterbility’, fabulous schools, shops and restaurants, it’s easy to understand why Sussex is such a desirable market,” says Guy. Toby and Guy feel that the philosophy, ethos and reach of the national Jackson-Stops’ brand, blended with their own experience and local knowledge, will ensure their clients will benefit fully from what a long-established national agent can bring to the sale process. Furthermore, they can’t wait to open their doors and do all they can to support their local community. Toby and Guy look forward to welcoming you to their new office sometime soon.

REF: ALONG THE LANE TO AMERICA BY RICHARD BRYANT OF THE LINDFIELD HISTORY PROJECT GROUP FROM LINDFIELD LIFE MAGAZINE

name America appears on old Ordnance Survey maps and the track to the cottages became known as America Lane. Allen required the tenants to be hard working men with large families and additional land could be rented along with loans for seed, animals and fertiliser. Labourers were expected to cultivate their allotments in addition to working for a local farmer and the scheme was a success as no family claimed Parish Relief after moving to the Colony. Nationally however, the scheme did not provide a workable solution and after Allen’s death in 1843, the colony concept was abandoned and the estate sold and later demolished. Today, Lindfield enjoys not only the facilities of a well appointed high street lined with many ancient timber framed buildings but a superb setting in the edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Scrase stream runs through the Scrase Valley Nature Reserve which comprises of 15 acres of woodland, marsh, scrub and flood

HEALTH HUB

DIVERTICULAR DISEASE Dr Keith Hine is our expert medical practitioner this month, and as a retired Gastroenterologist he is perfectly placed to divulge the ins and outs of Diverticular Disease

A

diverticulum is the name given to a small pouch which bulges out from any hollow structure in the body. The plural of diverticulum is diverticula. Diverticular disease of the colon is a disease of western civilisation. In the UK approximately half the population over 65 years of age have diverticular disease. Many people have the condition without realising, because it causes no symptoms and does them no harm. The condition is much less common in the developing world, possibly because of differences in diet. We cannot be entirely certain what causes diverticula to form in the colon. Increased pressure within the bowel probably forces pouches of bowel lining through points of weakness in the muscle layers to form diverticula. Studies have shown that diverticular disease is more common in those countries with a western diet – high in animal protein and fat and low in vegetable and cereal fibre. A low intake

of fibre results in a smaller volume of material passing through the colon. In these circumstances the pressures produced within the colon are higher. Thus, diverticular disease is thought to be one result of a low-fibre diet. There is no increased risk of cancer in diverticular disease. However, since diverticular disease and bowel cancer may cause similar symptoms, your doctor may want to be entirely sure that cancer has been excluded by arranging an X-ray of the colon (a barium enema or CT colonography) and, possibly,

Diverticular disease is thought to be one result of a low-fibre diet a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy (a telescopic inspection of the bowel). Even though diverticular disease has a widespread prevalence, complications are surprisingly few but the following may occasionally occur: • Diverticulitis – inflammation due to bacterial infection and usually treated by antibiotics. • Perforation of a diverticulum which may cause peritonitis (a serious

condition requiring hospital admission), an abscess (collection of pus) or a fistula (a connection into the bladder or vagina). Any perforation may require surgical intervention. Most patients with diverticular disease do not have any symptoms, however, some patients experience: • a change in bowel habit (either more constipated or more loose than usual). • colicky discomfort, especially on the left side of the abdomen. • distension of the abdomen. Occasionally, there may be: • pain, which arises because the diverticula become inflamed (diverticulitis). • blood in the motions. If this occurs it should be reported to your doctor. For many patients simply increasing vegetable and cereal fibre in the diet will relieve their symptoms and return their bowel activity to normal. Fibre intake can be supplemented by adding coarse wheat bran to food (such as yoghurt, soup, gravy, mashed potatoes, cereals). Your doctor may prescribe fibre bulking agents, such as ispaghula husk. A few patients who still experience colicky pain and distension need treatment with drugs called anti-spasmodics. There are several such drugs some of which are available over the counter. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise. l

EAT HEALTHY A high-fibre diet is often helpful. This will include:

• wholemeal bread • brown rice • bran cereals • wholemeal pasta • plenty of fruit and

vegetables

It’s a Dog’s Life Teddy the Border Terrier is venturing out and about this month and he is quite partial to a bit of motorhoming, writes Helen Stockton, the pen behind the paw

W

ell the year is progressing, the weather improving and holidays are looming! The concept of the perfect holiday is a bit subjective, but if I had to vote, it’d be motorhoming, paws down. Now I’m a dog who likes to keep my family within sight; I’ve already lost one owner and I’m not about to let that happen again, so a motorhome is ideal, after all it’s everything you need in a small space and there is little opportunity for your nearest and dearest to go out of sight for more than a few minutes. I have a special bed that fits in between the front cab seats and there’s blown air heating with the outlets at the perfect height for a small dog with a strong sense of

alignment, so what more could I ask for. The Boss, Rolo, used to like that kind of holiday too when he was alive, and he was the master of escape. On caravan sites, dogs are supposed to be kept on tethers, but

that’s nothing to a small dog with determination. ‘Them Indoors’ made the mistake of thinking the awning was a secure location with its firmly pegged down sides, but the Boss launched his own great escape under the flaps and was eventually returned on a borrowed lead to a frantic ‘Her Indoors’, having appeared in someone else’s caravan because they were cooking something tasty. You’ve got to admire his style! I too, have launched my own successful escape bid. When we were away recently, ‘Her Indoors’ went to go outside and as she was poised in the doorway, she witnessed a caravan accidentally uncoupling from its hitch to the towing car, and rolling back down the hill towards a parked motorhome. In all the excitement, I escaped and ran after it barking, with ‘Him Indoors’ running after me. He managed to catch me, and the caravan ran into the verge of its own accord so no-one was hurt, but I like to think I added to the sense of drama.

I have a special bed that fits in between the front cab seats One of the advantages of being on holiday is that I get to try out different forms of transport. I went on a train recently and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Guard, having noticed me getting on, made a point of seeking me out. I was a bit worried initially, as I didn’t have a ticket, but fortunately ‘Them Indoors’ did and the Guard was a dog lover who just wanted to say hello and give me a quick ear tickling, which was fine by me. I had a similar experience on a bus when one of the fellow passengers turned out to be a Border Terrier owner too. He had some shopping so he opened his packet of crunchy nut cornflakes especially to share. I notice none of the other passengers got any. Still, holidays are supposed to be about eating and drinking unfamiliar things as well as having different experiences so this ticked all the boxes. Happy days! l 66 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2019

but you’ll need to think about them in advance. For example, if a dog is your pet of choice, there are varieties to suit every home and lifestyle, but it wouldn’t be fair to have a Border Collie, with their boundless energy and intelligence, if you lived in a small flat in a town or city centre without access to green space, and were out a lot. With longer days and warmer evenings on the horizon, we sent Robert Veitch and one of Sussex Living’s designers, Jo Grey on a late afternoon stroll around Henfield and the surrounding countryside

rom the car park, walk along Coopers Way to the High Street, then turn right and walk north. Cross at the pelican crossing, then turn left into Church Street. There’s an eclectic mix of housing on either side as a succession of side roads are crossed; Craggits Lane, Chestnut Way, Martyn Close, Parsonage Road and then Church Lane. It’s worth pausing for the view of St Peter’s Church. Jo rejoiced at the rows of beautifully maintained yew trees. Continue west along what is now Upper Station Road, passing Hacketts Lane, Broomfield Road, Fabians Way, Faircox Lane, Staples Barn Lane and Station Road, before arriving at the car park on the right. Turn right and walk north along the Downs Link. This 37-mile route was established in 1984, after the closure of the railway almost 20 years earlier. It links the North Downs with the South Downs, and the coast at Shoreham-by-Sea. After ½ a mile, pass between a pair of concrete blocks. A whisker over a third of a 72 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2019

It’s a pleasant southwesterly amble with a far-reaching vista mile later there’s a kissing gate and fingerpost on the left. Beyond this, it’s a short trot to the top of the levee and the eastern arm of the River Adur. It was familiar territory for Jo who recalled spending time in the area in her youth, “Such lovely views, so rural,” she observed. It’s a pleasant southwesterly amble with a far-reaching vista towards Chanctonbury Ring. Remember there may be

livestock in the fields and they should be treated with respect. After ½ a mile there’s a confluence with the western Adur. The river is tidal here, and barely ten miles from the sea. Keep following the riverside path downstream, and an eye out for some of the swans that call this landscape home. There’s a wooden footbridge after half a mile and ¾ of a mile after that, is the ‘Take 5’ bench. “Well worth a rest,” noted Jo. Two stiles in quick succession precede Bineham Bridge. Continue southeasterly, over another stile, and the panorama should begin to open up. Atop the distant South Downs from west to east are the summits of Truleigh Hill, Devil’s Dyke, Newtimber Hill and Wolstonbury Hill. There are up to four stiles to cross before the remains of a dried up moat appear on the left, its alignment highlighted by a ring of trees and bushes. The path then rejoins the Downs Link at Stretham Bridge. Nostalgic visions of yesteryear are easy to imagine… Smoke rising from the chimney as the 5:15pm from Horsham to Bramber passes through. Back on the Downs Link, walk north, passing a wooden bench and metal bench along the way. Both offer pleasing westward views. After 1¼ miles, just after a brick bridge, the link comes to a crossroads, at a post and rail barrier half blocking the way. Turn right and immediately right again by the telegraph pole, heading downhill, between conifers on the left and fencing on the right. At the t-junction, the brick arch of the bridge crossed moments earlier is visible on the right. Turn left, wandering east,

past the pond on the left. The path chicanes right left, then under willow trees until it reaches a stile by a stream. Follow the stream and its refreshing sound of gurgling water. Jo noticed a solitary newt sunbathing in a pool, enjoying the afternoon glow of spring. A low wall precedes a pair of stiles and three railway sleeper bridges, after which there are two sections of boardwalk. At the five-way fingerpost, turn left and endure the only incline of the day. Spring Hill is short and shallow in gradient, evolving into a track at the top, bordered by a yew hedge on the left. Follow the track to the road, the village sign clearly visible on the other side. Walk up the High Street, past period properties, back into the heart of the village. Find the war memorial and consider the odyssey complete. All that’s left to do is to treat oneself to some refreshments in the delightful, welcoming and historic environment of Henfield. l

Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. T

he ever popular Staplefield Village Fete and Car Show will once again take place on the late May Bank Holiday 27th May. Everyone can find something to enjoy, from Maypole Dancing, traditional fair ground rides, bouncy slide, games, radio controlled cars, and many interesting stalls. The

Car Show provides a spectacular display of vehicles from the weird to the wonderful, and a highlight of the day is the Fun Dog Show compèred again this year by Clive Panto. BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest ONE OF US IS LYING

by Karen M. McManus (Penguin)

The protagonists in this are teenagers, and as it’s set in the US most of them have cars and drive to school. It took me a while to get into it, as there are a lot of things that are unfamiliar to British kids, and there are several narrators. That’s a lot of characters to get to know, as you need to understand their parents and friends as well. But once you’ve got over that initial hurdle, this book is terrific. Fast-moving, full of plot twists, and I didn’t guess the ending. Five kids are given a detention for carrying mobile phones in their bags. They all deny that the phones are theirs, and as they have other handsets it seems very plausible that they’ve been set up. Especially when one of the five

THE CACTUS

by Sarah Haywood (Two Roads) We’ve had a lot of socially inept characters writing in the first person in recent years, and by now we’re used to seeing the world through the eyes of someone with a problem. I feel a little uncomfortable using the word entertaining or amusing about a book such as this, but there’s no doubt that the device of the reader seeing things far more clearly than the main character gives you the same feeling as getting questions right on Mastermind. Susan says exactly what

Her row of well-tended cactuses are a neat parallel for the sort of person she is she thinks, considers her regimented life is perfectly acceptable, and her row of well-tended cactuses are a neat parallel for the sort of person she is. She’s in her mid-forties, and conducts relationships the way she conducts everything else – at an arm’s length. The story revolves around what happens after her mother dies, and she has to reach an agreement with the brother she thoroughly despises. But circumstances are not always under her control, and she eventually has to change with them. I really enjoyed this, as Susan doesn’t engender pity because she is too well organised – so you’re really rooting for her by the end. 78 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2019

There are a lot of people who hate him, and a lot of potential suspects has an allergic reaction, and the other four are accused of murder. Simon, the boy who dies, is a blogger with a very nasty line in exposing secrets about other kids at his school. There are a lot of people who hate him, and a lot of potential suspects… Except that most of them wouldn’t have had the opportunity to lace his drink with peanut oil…

THE SILENCE OF THE GIRLS by Pat Barker (Hamish Hamilton) I don’t usually recommend violent books, but this is different. Nothing is gratuitous; this is Ancient Greece during the Trojan War, and the picture it paints of death, torture, plague, and enslavement is so real you can almost taste it. Women were meant to stay in the background and say nothing, whatever happened to them, and what did happen was very unpleasant indeed.

Achilles is depicted as a complex person, half thug and half abandoned child This is the story of Briseis, the wife of King Mynes. When Achilles sacked Lyrnessus and killed her husband and brothers, she was awarded to him as a prize. Her subsequent transition from a free woman to an object that could be traded sounds totally authentic. She was the cause of the dispute between Agamemnon and Achilles, which led to the death of Patroclus, Achilles’ soulmate, and the only really sympathetic male character. Achilles is depicted as a complex person, half thug and half abandoned child, which gives some insight into his behaviour. Compulsive reading.

Not only will this provide a great photo opportunity, but accompanying information shields will reveal what we think the rooms would have looked like in 1385, how they would have been used and the important roles the various characters such as the minstrel, steward and priest would have played in castle life.
