COMMUNITY

THE FAMILIES

Left Behind In this special feature, Jamie Crow looks at the emotional challenges facing investigating police officers and the families of missing people in Sussex

“I

don’t believe Owen is alive and I haven’t for a while.” Those words are from Stella Harding, speaking about her teenage son Owen, who disappeared from near his home in Saltdean over six months ago. They are emotional words, but honest ones,

Stella tells me; a way of starting to cope with her grief after all this time. It was late March this year when 16-year-old Owen went missing, one week into full lockdown, and it had been a difficult period for the family. Owen, a keen artist, swimmer and adventurous young man, had been arguing with his mum about seeing his girlfriend, who lived 280 miles away, and had headed out to watch the sunset on the cliffs near to their home. “He just went for a walk, didn’t take anything with him, and that was the last time I saw him,” Stella says. Owen was officially reported as missing four hours after he was last seen and it wasn’t long before the community rallied around Stella, with social media pages, arranged searches and various media coverage in hopes of finding him. “I was just numb at first,” she says. “When you have a missing person, your mind goes into overdrive, everything is speculation. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I didn’t want to tell people that’d he’d disappeared at first because I didn’t want to admit to myself what had happened, and then eventually I just knew I had to.” Two weeks after police started looking for Owen, Stella was informed the official investigation was winding down. “The case never closes, it never goes away,” she says. “He will always be classed as a missing person.” As the weeks have gone on, the community support for Stella thankfully hasn’t gone

away, but she says she believes her son is no longer alive. “As the months have gone by, I do believe more and more I have lost my son.” In the 12 months leading up to the end of June this year, there were over 8,300 missing persons cases in Sussex. Detective Inspector Chris Leech, who works in the West division of the county’s Missing Persons Unit, says there is a high demand of missing people in Sussex reported, but this is in comparison to national numbers. Much of his role involves working to safeguard vulnerable people who have been missing – he says some of the most common reasons people disappear can include a mental health issue, someone who is a victim of domestic abuse, or a young person who’s been used for criminal exploitation. “It’s a job where you really try to make a difference,” he says. “It’s a massive demand for the police, especially when it comes to children and safeguarding. We are dealing with some of the most vulnerable people in the county. I would say more than half of those missing in the past year will be teenagers from children’s homes who haven’t got the sympathy of a loving network around them.” Indeed, a quick look at the missing appeals page on the Sussex Police website shows

10 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

the vast majority to have elements of vulnerability. Of that figure eight people, according to police, remain missing at this time, including Owen. Chris says it is quite rare not to find someone,

Most disappearances are mainly triggered by something that’s happened in someone’s life, and some people don’t actually want to be found

but it can be for a variety of reasons, especially if it’s voluntary. “Most disappearances are mainly triggered by something that’s happened in someone’s life, and some people don’t actually want to be found.” When it comes to supporting the loved ones of those who have gone missing, it can be the most emotional side of the job. “We try to give families as much reassurance and support as we can,” he says. “The majority of people are found within 72 hours, but then obviously there are some people we don’t find.” As in Stella’s case, Chris says an investigation can come to a close once police are satisfied that all relevant lines of enquiry have been completed (although officers would follow up any further information that comes to light). At that point they have to inform loved ones. “It’s quite difficult emotionally, you’ve covered all lines of enquiry and you want to do everything you can to find them, but you’ve come to a natural stop, and ultimately a family member is likely to say, ‘there must be something you can do’. But we have done everything we can because we want to, we want to help, and we also have to justify our actions.” While Sussex Police are the primary contact for a missing persons of those

share their stories. Due to COVID-19 restrictions this year, these talks have been restricted to video conferencing, but Stella says it’s still been extremely helpful for her. “It’s been quite an experience and it’s really interesting to

It was quite overwhelming to see people in the group who have been there for over 20 years

investigations, Chris says the force relies heavily on other agencies and related charities, who assist officers with actively pushing ongoing appeals. “We get a lot of search and rescue volunteers who will go out and cross miles and miles of fields to look for people. We couldn’t do without them to be honest.” Chris says he’s also keen on looking into more multi-agency work so the force can increase their safeguarding and prevention work to reduce the number

of cases. “You need to get to the root of the problem on the more common cases, because if you do, that gives you the time and resources to focus on the rare cases of people who have involuntary gone missing and need to be found.” For Stella, some of the longer-term support has come from a number of charities suggested by police, including Missing People UK, which carries out social forums for families and friends who have gone missing to talk and

know what people are going through – we’re all there with our different stories. It was quite overwhelming to see people in the group who have been there for over 20 years, who have had people missing for that long, but it was a very supportive environment. “We can’t have a funeral for Owen because of COVID-19 and we don’t know where he is, so it’s a bit like being in limbo. I’ve also been on a real spiritual journey with some of my friends and we’ve been processing our grief together. I can’t really fathom out if Owen’s still alive, but it’s almost been more helpful to be sad and to grieve than hope for my son’s return. Although it is different for everyone.” l www.missingpeople.org.uk

his secluded Victorian house in East Grinstead is quite clearly a warm family home, with much loved art, antiques and decorative objects collected over the years. Nestling amongst these traditional choices are colourful and contemporary touches that hint at exotic and youthful influences: hot pink and tangerine ikat cushions and throws in the sitting room and bedroom, mustard yellow and crimson towels in the bathroom, and zesty orange candles in the kitchen, not to mention plump, vibrant pumpkins and gourds at this time of year, and freshly cut flowers from the garden in every room. I have to admit, if it wasn’t for my daughter, I might not have become so brave with colour

“Be brave with colour, even just in your accessories! It often makes a room seem bigger and certainly adds more personality”

“I have to admit, if it wasn’t for my daughter, I might not have become so brave with colour,” says Nicky Heard, designer and maker of home furnishings (@nicky_heard) and mother of two children, Izzy and Nick, with husband Ged, a chartered engineer. “I love the off whites and greens that I used to decorate this house when we bought it, but these days Izzy encourages me to choose bolder furnishings.” In fact, it was while Nicky was visiting her now grown-up daughter in Indonesia a few years ago that she was inspired to be a little more daring. “Izzy took a two-year job as a scuba-diving instructor, and I was keen to pop over to see her as often as possible. Before my first trip I researched the area and discovered it was famous for weaving ikat fabric, which is made on the island of Lombok. While I was out there, I met the men who hand-weave the ikat and

was in awe of their craftsmanship and natural dyes they use – and I instantly fell in love with the array of incredible patterns and colours they create.” Nicky came back with as much fabric as she could carry and made dozens of unique throws and cushion covers. “They’ve definitely livened up our home,” she smiles. “I love to knit too,” she continues, “Experimenting with different textures and colours. Izzy and Nick always had plenty of homemade jumpers, scarves and blankets when they were younger; and now I’m experimenting with naturally dyed wool as well as working with ikats for my home and the business.” During those formative years, Nicky also masterminded much bigger projects, including the transformation of the family home, which was a little smaller than it is today thanks to a galley kitchen and an underwhelming entrance. She says, “Having left London in 1999 to raise the children in the countryside, I had a vision of how I wanted us to live, and that included sitting around a big breakfast table every morning, and the children doing their homework or drawing pictures in the kitchen while I cooked dinner.” Nicky ensured the builders worked their magic to create a hallway that not only looks like it has always been there, but is befitting a house of this size, and a kitchen that looks perfectly in keeping with the rest of the house. “We kept the original front door, but where we had to put in new fittings, I felt it was important to replicate the Victorian features, such as the sash windows and cornices, to ensure the rooms flow properly.” Terracotta floor tiles, a large range, and handmade wooden units give the kitchen its farmhouse feel, along with

“Izzy is a brilliant ceramicist,” says Nicky. “From the day she started at just 10 years old, she was unafraid of working on a large scale and I’m lucky that I get to keep her incredible pieces, at least till she decides to settle down with a home of her own.” Until then at least, Izzy’s creations, and of course those bold colours, are here to stay. l Text and Styling: Narratives/Naomi Jones Photography: Narratives/Robert Sanderson an extra-large butler sink and Welsh dresser. “Once you have the basics in place, you can move and change everything else around them,” says Nicky, “but I have to be honest and say that most of what I did originally is the same today.” Daughter Izzy might not be able to persuade her mother to completely repaint but the accessories have certainly evolved - along with encouraging those zingy hues, Izzy has added to the array of striking artefacts dotted around the house. HOMES

wonderful

workspaces

In today’s climate, home offices have never been more desirable. Hanna Prince has this advice for designing your own stylish workspace

W

ith an increasing number of us working from home, having a dedicated working space at home has never been more important. According to recent studies, more than a quarter of Brits would be looking for a home office in a future property and are willing to pay extra for the privilege. That makes adding an office to your home a good investment, as well as being a fun project in its own right. Whether you have endless garden space, or simply a nook under the stairs to start with, it’s possible to design a working area that will look great, enhance your productivity and boost the value of your house at the same time. STEP INTO THE GARDEN If you plan on working from home regularly, a garden office may be

double-sided partitions to create a sense of privacy.

a worthwhile investment. Even if you have room in your house for a work space, the peace, solitude and separation offered by an annexe can dramatically improve efficiency. There are plenty of options when it comes to garden offices, from insulated sheds to glass-walled garden rooms and readymade pods. Garden offices can also double up as gyms, guest rooms, art studios or games rooms. USE WASTED SPACE Short on square footage? A home office needn’t be a garden annexe, or even a dedicated room. Any wasted space can become a study area, whether it’s an alcove, an unused nook between a wardrobe and a window or even the poky cupboard under the stairs. Use paint, flooring or rugs to separate the work zone from the rest of the room. Home cubicles are increasingly popular as well – many have built-in desks and

BANISH CLUTTER If your home office space is dual purpose, it’s particularly important to keep work books, wires and other home working essentials tucked away. Using a trolley that can be wheeled back into a cupboard after use is one way to keep things under control. Alternatively, consider making a feature of storage by using creative solutions such as vintage wooden crates, old trunks, trinket boxes or even repurposed tin cans. Peg boards and wall-hanging units are both spacesaving storage solutions – or take wall storage one stylish step further and

GLAZED EXTENSIONS

Bespoke furniture isn’t as expensive as you might think use cork tiles to turn an entire wall into a pin board. IF THE LIGHT IS RIGHT… Well-designed lighting can quickly turn a home office from dingy to cool and cosy. Make the most of natural light by positioning your desk close to a window, but add a blind to block glare. Team mellow overhead lighting with a statement lamp -– desk lamps come in all shapes and sizes, and some will even

wirelessly charge your phone while you work. Wall-fixed task lights are also a great option if you’re short on desk space. GO BESPOKE Can’t find the right desk to fit an awkward home office space? Think about having one made instead. Bespoke furniture isn’t as expensive as you might think, and you can commission something with the storage, style and dimensions that fits your personal needs. A good designer will also help you to get the most out of your office space, ultimately increasing your productivity.

HEALTHY HOME WORKING Aesthetics are important in a home office – but comfort and function are even more crucial. An ergonomic chair is a worthwhile investment. There are other options designed to protect your back and posture as well, including balance balls, kneeling stools and standing desks. It’s crucial to make sure your desk and chair are both adjustable to avoid back pain, and you may also want to consider a movable monitor arm or a stand for your laptop. Other ergonomic accessories include flexible footrests, adjustable keyboard platforms with padded wrist rests and roll bar mice. With the right attention to design and comfort, going to work might just become the best part of your day. l

s Sally and Rob Appleyard navigated their way through leafy meandering country lanes, en route to view a remote East Sussex farmhouse, the puzzled pair couldn’t help but wonder why the estate agent’s details lacked any photographs of the interior. “As soon as we arrived, we were instantly captivated by both the pretty exterior and absolutely breathtaking location, with far-reaching views over rolling hills and fields,” says Sally. “However, having stepped inside and begun our tour of the property, we understood exactly why the rooms hadn’t been photographed. The house was a complete wreck and looked as though it hadn’t been touched for decades. Plaster was crumbling off the walls, there was no central heating and it was crying out for a huge injection of TLC.”

At that stage, the couple had made the brave decision to change their lifestyle completely and relocate from the Georgian home they’d recently renovated in London. “Zack loved being outside and, although Greenwich was great, he hadn’t the freedom to build dens and explore,” says Sally. “Also, once he started primary school, we felt that the large class sizes were far from ideal. Then, when Rob hinted that he’d always fancied rearing a herd of cattle on a smallholding, we were suddenly propelled into a whirlwind of househunting.” Reminiscing over halcyon days spent in and around Rye and Camber Sands, the excited couple decided to start their search in East Sussex, since the county boasted both the proximity to coast and countryside that they yearned for. The pair looked at dozens of houses before happening upon Lidham Hill Farm, situated between Rye and Hastings. “I remember it all very clearly,” says Sally. “We’d seen another eight properties that day and were beginning to feel slightly jaded.” Thankfully, their perseverance paid off when the tenacious couple realised that finally, they may just have found their ‘holy grail’ home.

“From the outside it was attractive, a great size and surrounded by farmland. Inside, the house in its raw state was hideous. However, as I wandered into the back garden and paused to drink in the spectacular Brede Valley views, I just knew that, with a lot of effort and imagination, it could, one day, be wonderful,” she adds. Unfortunately, purchasing the house took much longer than the Appleyards had anticipated, since they couldn’t find a buyer for their London home for more than a year. “Although it was frustrating, I was reasonably confident that we’d eventually secure the farmhouse,” says Sally. “Before we’d expressed interest, it had been languishing on the market for ages. Many prospective buyers had been put off by the scale of the work required, never mind the cost of restoring a Grade II Listed property.”

KITCHEN The Appleyards have replaced an old window at one end of their spacious kitchen with smart French doors. The doors lead out to a kitchen garden where Rob grows a selection of fruit and vegetables

Even though Sally’s parents, who live in a listed property, voiced concerns, the enthusiastic pair were prepared to take the plunge and make some short-term sacrifices, with a stoic attitude of ‘no pain, no gain.’ Having bought the farmhouse, the Appleyards quickly decided to install a large wood-burning stove in the sitting room’s impressive inglenook fireplace. “This was a huge bonus on two fronts,” says Sally. “Not only did the guy who fitted the woodburner recommend a fantastic builder but, as temperatures plummeted, the sitting room and kitchen became the only rooms that were in any way warm. One side of the house was so cold that it became a complete no-go zone that winter. “Inside, the conditions were pretty grim, but somehow we managed. As the first snowflakes fell, the garden and land outside were transformed into a complete winter wonderland. We couldn’t believe we’d so much space to go sledging, build snowmen and enjoy having fun as a family.” In the spring, the badly needed central heating was installed and the whole house rewired. After that, builders began tackling the first major project – knocking two of the bedrooms into one and fitting an ensuite, as well as replumbing the entire property. 44 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

We couldn’t believe we’d so much space to go sledging, build snowmen and enjoy having fun as a family

“We were unprepared for the fact that gaining the necessary permission to make alterations to a listed house was more complicated than we’d imagined when, essentially, all Rob and I wanted to do was enhance the home we’d fallen in love with, in a manner that would be both faithful and sympathetic,” says Sally. “Adhering to the conditions, such as using specific materials, took a long time and cost much more than we’d anticipated.” Luckily, the project, with Sally at the helm, proceeded smoothly with no unforeseen hiccups or surprises, and in the autumn, the Appleyards turned their attention to phase two – transforming a derelict cow shed in the garden into a one-bedroom holiday let. Meanwhile, in the farmhouse, fitters stripped out tired old units and replaced them with smart cupboards, marble and oak worktops, and a handy dresser. “Even though the Aga looked lovely, it had been there since 1947 and was, somehow, full of plasterdust and totally inefficient,” says Sally. “We swapped it for a Mercury range that we felt was a good blend of both contemporary and traditional elements.” The Appleyards have worked hard to achieve a mix of period and modern styles culminating in a

relaxed air of faded gentility, apparent throughout this welcoming house that’s jam-packed with an eclectic mix of antiques, curios and endearing personal touches. “We’re thrilled with the way our magical house has come together,” says Sally. “Towards the end of the project, we realised our rambling farmhouse, annexe and surrounding land with its herd of cattle would be fantastic for photography and film location shoots and it’s an idea that’s proving extremely popular. “Since moving here, life has changed dramatically for all of us and definitely for the better. The children have adapted well and we feel we’re giving them the best start we can. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I look out the kitchen window and see the cattle strolling by – it’s quite a change from London rooftops and actually pretty surreal! This is a wonderful place to live and we’re so pleased that we’ve been able to breathe new life into a home that’s giving us, and other people, so much pleasure.” l Text and Styling: Narratives/Janet McMeekin Photography: Narratives/Richard Gadsby

HAVE YOU GOT THE INSURANCE YOU NEED? “At NFU Mutual Henfield we pride ourselves on taking the necessary time to help make sure we are providing the right level of cover for you to protect your home and contents should the worst happen.” Chets Modi, Agent When did you last walk around your house looking in cupboards to check your contents insurance is adequate? Do you live in a larger, higher-value home, or have a number of expensive items – perhaps jewellery and watches, fine art or collections, or even designer interiors with beautiful curtains and tech. Standard insurance may not be fully protecting you. You may be better protected by an insurance product which enables you to adapt your policy to meet your specific needs – such as agreeing values, increasing cover limits. WHAT IS UNDERINSURANCE? To be ‘underinsured’ means that the amount you’re covered for is less than the cost of rebuilding, replacing, or repairing. For example, if you had a fire at your home, and your ‘sums insured’ is only £30,000, but the actual cost to replace your contents is £100,000 then you’re underinsured and the reality is your policy won’t pay out beyond £30,000, leaving you with a hefty bill. DO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU OWN? Try to take account of the true value of everything you own – both buildings and contents. If you’re unsure of the difference between the two, imagine your house could be lifted off the ground and tipped upside down. Everything that falls out is contents. The rest should be covered by buildings insurance. Also don’t forget about items such as artwork or jewellery that you might have inherited or purchased a long time ago – their value may have changed significantly.

Agent of The National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society Limited.

HOW CAN YOU BE CERTAIN EVERYTHING IS COVERED? Not only does Bespoke insurance from NFU Mutual offer many specialist features as standard, but unlike many other insurers who have moved online, the team at NFU Mutual value a real conversation with you to fully understand your needs, enabling them to tailor cover right down to the finest detail. Take time to walk around your house and use the list below as a guide to the contents you need to be insured for. Remember, you should look at how much items are to replace from new as in the event of a claim you can get new for old cover. Exclusions may apply. Living room:

BLOOMING TIMES

Versatile and longlived, no plants give better fiery autumnal colours than acers, says Flo Whitaker

BLAZE AWAY! A

long-held gardening myth confidently states that acers require shade and acid soil. In fact, many varieties are unfussy about soil type and enjoy a brightly-lit spot. All acers require two fundamental things to thrive; nutritious, moisture-retentive soil and wind shelter, so if you can provide that environment, there are varieties that will suit your garden. As a general rule, red/dark-leaved types are tougher and require more sunlight than their paler/variegatedleaved relatives. When planted in shade, red-leaved acers often produce dull mahogany brown leaves instead of the dramatic fiery foliage they are so famous for. Dark leaf pigmentation is Mother Nature’s sunscreen (that’s why juvenile leaves of many plants have red/pink colouration), so if you have a dark-leaved acer that’s sulking in shade, try moving it to a sunnier location and you may be pleasantly surprised next year. Fallen in love with a particular acer variety? Think

before you reach for your credit card – acers aren’t cheap! Can you provide the right conditions? Is it a sun-lover or a shady character? Also, consider its eventual height/spread. Acers do not respond well to pruning – a bad haircut on a mature acer that’s outgrown its allotted space is a sorry sight. A solo-planted specimen makes a dramatic ‘eye-catcher’, but acers are equally at home in a mixed border – their foliage compliments any flower. They also look splendid when grouped together in pots. In a shady location, potted acers, ferns and violas make classic planting partners, while in springtime, a patio pot display incorporating acers and the vivid blooms of tulips, primulas and cyclamen coum is hard to beat.

A young acer should be moved into a slightly larger pot every couple of years, preferably in early spring. Carefully choose the right container. ‘Ali Baba’ style pots (where the rim is a smaller diameter than the body of the pot) are best avoided as the restricted top makes it virtually impossible to 56 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

In a shady location, potted acers, ferns and violas make classic planting partners remove a plant with a substantial root system - sadly, smashing the pot is often the only solution. When the maximum practical pot size has been attained, refresh the soil by ‘top-dressing’ every spring. Gently remove the top few centimetres of soil and replace with a fresh soil-based compost that has leaf mould and multi-purpose fertiliser added to the mix. Potted acers will enjoy a fortnightly feed throughout spring and summer. Seaweed tonic is marvellous stuff and can be applied to the roots or used as a foliar feed; dilute the recommended amount into a watering can and sprinkle over the foliage or water directly onto the soil. Acers are long-lived plants that become more characterful as they age. Given a little care, they will continue to add interest to your garden for many years. l

eaders may know of these plants from two types of small shrub with gold or silver edged leaves commonly sold in garden centres. Euonymus plants are generally hardy and found across most continents, although they are native to eastern Asia. The euonymus name comes from Greek meaning ‘good name’, however some translate it as ‘good luck’. The common name is ‘spindle.’ This arises from the use of the wood from euonymus trees to make spindles for wool spinning. The wood is hard and has also been used to make, for example, skewers and toothpicks. Several euonymus features makes them popular. The flowers of the common types are inconspicuous, but attractive to bees. The flowers of lesser known varieties can be green, yellow, pink or maroon in colour. The Winged stem leaves range in size from 2-15cm (¾ inch to 6 inches). Among the species there are both evergreen and deciduous types although euonymus are mainly grown for their ornamental 58 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

foliage. They do well in most moist soils and in shade, but their colour is best expressed when grown in full sun. They do not tolerate waterlogged soils. For many years euonymus hedges survived the salt air along Eastbourne seafront. As euonymus generally grow to a limited height and have compact foliage they are suitable for creating a colourful hedge. A ‘tapestry’ effect hedge can be created by using more than one variety or incorporating another species. Should one plant

The smaller leaved microphyllus varieties of euonymus can be clipped to provide structure in a garden either as a single shaped plant or to surround a bed with a low hedge, maybe as a substitute for box hedging where box blight is a problem. Left untrimmed the evergreen varieties provide an informal splash of colour throughout the year.

The leaves of the evergreen euonymus are tough and many have colourful patterns; either around the margins or in patterns across the main leaf surface. The proportion of colouring differs according to the variety and sometimes even on the same bush. Occasionally a totally yellow or green branch will develop. There are varieties with leaves in a predominant shade such as pale lime E. japonicus Paloma white. Another fascinating version is E. fortunei Harlequin where the new growth is pure white, before developing dark and light green speckles to be followed by a pink tinge in winter. A fine yellow leaf margin and stem are features of another euonymus variety. One variety which will climb up supports to 2.5m (5ft) is E. fortunei Wolong Ghost, whose dark green leaves are narrow and with a dramatic white leaf stalk. Some other types of euonymus plants are deciduous such as E. europaeus, E. alatus and E. planipes. The green leaves of summer develop spectacular autumnal colours ranging from rusty brown to brilliant reds. One of the best

Capsular fruit

The euonymus name comes from Greek meaning ‘good name’ examples is E. alatus which has the common name ‘burning bush.’ The deciduous varieties grow to about 2-3 metres in height and spread, but they can be contained by clipping. When the leaves have dropped the stems show off the wings making the stem appear to be square. Another attractive feature of some varieties is the autumn capsular fruit which are pink or red in colour and four lobed. When ripe the capsule splits open to reveal four bright orange seeds.

E. hamilto nianus subsp sie boldianus

Some euonymus varieties can be grown on as a standard or lollipop at a height to suit the gardener. In the evergreen form this can create an eye-catching feature. There are some other types which are naturally of tree proportions, such as E. hamiltonianus subsp sieboldianus which grows to six metres. These may be deciduous or semi-evergreen. Whether it’s for hedging, bees, flowers, spindle-making or just the interesting leaf colours, there’s bound to be a euonymus just for you and your garden. l

Continue straight on, then around to the left into the valley towards the glass houses, where the path turns right onto the concrete drive. After 250m turn left and walk uphill for 100m, before turning right and ambling around the wooden five-bar gate. Continue through the arboreal tunnel, eventually arriving at the tarmac drive.

Turn left and enjoy the avenue of trees on the approach to the church of St John the Baptist, which dates from the 11th century. The path continues to the right of the church, through a kissing gate into a field. Follow the left side boundary to a stile, then past Findon cricket ground, veering up the slope before turning sharp left and more steeply uphill to a redundant stile. Once past the stile, up and over the brow, the panorama opens up dramatically. Continue to the busy road and cross with care to the drive opposite. 50m along the drive turn left and downhill, along the Monarch’s Way into the Long Furlong valley. Once past the metal gate and the ‘beware of the bull’ sign, the track continues, rolling through the epic grandeur of the landscape, blowing away any lingering cobwebs. Over the crest and beyond a gate, the path stretches out downhill towards the distant beech trees and gate, before easing uphill, eventually joining a tarmac drive. Turn left, then right almost immediately, and wander between the hedges of Myrtle Grove for 400m,

eventually arriving at a three-way fingerpost by a wall box in the flint building marked ‘GR.’ Bear left, then right almost immediately and continue west for half a mile to the road at Michelgrove Lane. Turn left and follow the road downhill and around a left hand bend. Turn right 100m beyond the bend and walk between the crops. “A lovely place for a picnic,” noted Ruth as she sat down, opened her knapsack and offered refreshments. Continue into the woods and walk uphill to the crossroads and four-way fingerpost. Turn left, and wander along the plateau to the gate at the entrance to Patching Hill. The giant beech tree above is exceptional.

Turn left into Richardson’s Wood and gradually witness the light penetrating the canopy above as the path widens beneath; before emerging joyously into a field, high above Long Furlong, with the road below bisecting the valley. The path follows the contour lines, gaining altitude very gently, passing sloe berries near the silver gate at Church Hill; the highest point of the day at 136m (445 feet). Beyond the gate, turn right, then right again into Honeysuckle Lane. Potter south along the track, enjoying the views across Worthing, before passing the transmitter aerials at West Hill, finally emerging at the fringes of High Salvington surburbia a mile later. At the crossroads, turn left into Furze Hill and walk past the ‘tin tabernacle’ of St Peter’s Church to the High Salvington windmill. CARE MONTH

Community Stars

Care in the community has carried on these last few months while the world around it changed. The old normal became a new normal. Countless people have performed above and beyond the call of duty to help those in need. Robert Veitch reports on a handful of stories to celebrate some of these community stars, but we know this is just the tip of the iceberg

M

uch as we would like to mention names and openly congratulate these people, client confidentially prevents us doing so. Their stories are true; these heroines and heroes live among you. GOING THE EXTRA MILE In the Mid Sussex area we learnt of a heart-warming story involving a carer who has literally been going the extra mile for the client. In this case the carer was looking after a client suffering anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses. After the day job was done, this kind carer changed into plain clothes and in their own time, at their own cost, took the client on several long walks over the Downs to aid their wellbeing. They enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine, walking and talking and just being there, making a difference, helping.

GAME, SET AND MATCH On the outskirts of Worthing we heard of a care home that turned lockdown into a positive oasis of peace. With no visitors allowed and having to “batten down the hatches” the staff pulled together to create an island community. There was story telling, VE Day was celebrated, there was dressing up and even a ‘Not Wimbledon Day’ to replace the cancelled tennis. Technology savvy staff helped residents make their first video conferencing calls. Several staff offered to curtail their own freedom and stay in residence, though thankfully this didn’t become a reality. As the manager told me, “It was the very best of human nature on show.”

CORONA SPECIALS We became aware of an uplifting story taking place across the east and west of the county. Using animals from her own farm, this kind lady made eight “corona summer specials” to care homes during lockdown. Armed with anything from goats, to ducks, chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs, noncontact visits took place in the gardens of care homes from Rye to Wadhurst and to Worthing, to much appreciation. “Chickens are always popular,” she told me “animal therapy and interaction has proven benefits for the elderly” and

has clearly brought some joy to many people in difficult times.

GIVING BACK TO CRAWLEY We heard a remarkable story about the lone parent of a teenager with cerebral palsy, who is the Chairperson of a Crawley charity that helps the homeless. During lockdown, she helped lead the making and distribution of over 100 meals a day to feed homeless people who had been living on the streets and were being placed in temporary accommodation under the Emergency Covid-19 provision. This involved safely co-ordinating a non-contact volunteer team, food shopping trips and collecting food from donors. As part of the team of 20 volunteers, trying to help those less fortunate during this difficult time, she helped provide breakfast, lunch and a hot dinner seven nights a week, they all deserve some praise. l

How will your

CARE FEES BE PAID? Looking for a care package that’s right for you? Make sure you’ve considered all of your options – there’s plenty of support out there writes Jane Finnerty, joint chairman of SOLLA

T

he process of choosing and considering care options can be a challenging one, with many complex decisions to take. One of the most important areas to consider is how the care fees will be paid. Fees in West Sussex could cost up to £1,500 a week (the cost will vary, depending on the

provider and your needs) so it’s well worth taking the time to consider the best way to fund care fees. It is vital to seek independent financial advice from an expert in the area of later life finances so that you can be sure you understand all available options. The Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) is a not-for-profit organisation that works closely with Carewise, a care funding scheme set up by West Sussex

County Council and partners, supporting people to make well-informed decisions about paying for long-term care. SOLLA members are financial advisers who are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and who have also chosen to take the extra step to achieve the Later Life Adviser Accreditation - widely recognised as the gold standard in financial advice for later life planning. By becoming independently accredited, SOLLA advisers offer the added reassurance that they can give the practical help and guidance needed to help you make the right decisions at the right time.

It is vital to seek independent financial advice from an expert As well as care home funding and funding care at home, SOLLA advisers can also provide you with advice on retirement planning, equity release and other property options, savings and investments, and tax and estate planning. Advisers are re-licensed annually, required to undertake a full reaccreditation every five years, and must adhere to the SOLLA code of conduct. The SOLLA advisers who are part of Carewise have also undergone the following checks: They are approved under the Trading Standards ‘Buy With Confidence’ or equivalent local authority scheme They are checked via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) They are trained in safeguarding adults l

Caring with TECHNOLOGY

I

n these strange times, it’s become more important than ever to make sure residents in West Sussex who need care are looked after as well as possible. One of the ways to do that is by utilising

modern technology to its full potential, which in some cases can be life-saving when help is required quickly. That’s why a number of public organisations are looking into ways to help people live independently in their own homes. West Sussex County Council, along with the West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group, has given the go-ahead for the introduction of new equipment which can suit a variety of needs and offer reassurance to people in need of support. Equipment includes a range of different alarms and sensors, with the aim of making everyday

Technology-enabled care is becoming more important and helpful to West Sussex residents than ever before, as Jackie Hoare explains tasks, such as operating switches and doors, much easier. A service for this equipment, including installation, is being offered to residents with shortterm immediate needs, such as those who have been discharged from hospital and need a little extra support. On top of this equipment, a lifeline responder service is also currently being promoted by local organisations, and is ideal for people whose family, friends and carers live some distance away, or might not be able to respond immediately to an emergency call. If you’re interested in finding out if you could benefit from technologyenabled care, the best advice is to speak with your health and social care professional or local carers group. THE IMPORTANCE OF

Good

Neighbours O ne of the things that COVID-19 has highlighted for many people is the importance of good neighbours willing to help each other. However, the Royal Voluntary Service recognised this some time ago, and for over six years has been running a ‘Good Neighbours’ scheme, funded by West Sussex County Council. Paul Goff is Service Manager for the scheme covering Adur, Arun, Chichester and Worthing, with Helen Kirkham performing the same role covering Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex. Paul explained the idea is to help people re-engage with their local communities, by providing a volunteer for 12 weeks to support with making connections and reducing isolation. Their band of

volunteers range in age from 18-yearold college students to a retiree of 88, who still wants to help others, while the service users are mainly in the more senior age range too. One of the recent additions to the team is Anne-Marie Taylor, who with her children at school, wanted to give something back to her community. She saw an advert for volunteers and applied at the beginning of the year. She had just been approved and had a first, brief meeting with 84-year-old Jean Dennett, the service user she was going to visit, when lockdown interrupted. “When I first spoke to Jean and asked her what she’d like to do, she wanted to have a fish and chip supper on the beach, but lockdown came along and spoiled our plans,” said Anne-Marie.

ENVIRONMENT

ust as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to influence our lives, our local charities are also dealing with its impact. St Peter & St James Hospice provides high quality care to support those towards the end of life. The hospice only receives a small percentage of its funding from the government and relies on donations, fundraising activity and retail to raise the majority of its money. Along with donations, income is generated by both the charity’s retail and fundraising departments. “Our shops are now open for business, helping to raise much-needed income for the hospice,” explained Emily Cronin, Head of Trading. “We’re fully stocked and our fantastic retail staff have put in safeguarding measures in line with government guidelines.” This requires instore PPE and a robust quarantine process for all items, so customers can feel safe while shopping.

“We’ve had some fantastic donations from people across Sussex,” Emily told me. “Wonderful furniture, fashion and collectables, which we sell through our shops or online. A rare doll recently fetched £1,800 and this local support is really appreciated.”

We’ve been delighted at how supporters have continued to fundraise using a mixture of creativity and ingenuity One major obstacle to building on this success is the charity’s need to find a new distribution centre in the Burgess Hill area. With donations needing to quarantine for 48 hours, the charity needs extra room to prevent a backlog of goods in the warehouse, which often necessitates a pause in accepting more donations. If any readers can help

the charity locate suitable premises of around 6-8,000 square feet, please contact Emily on the details below. Fundraising has also been difficult. “While the response to our emergency appeal was overwhelming in terms of people’s generosity, this period has been challenging for our events and community fundraising efforts,” revealed Amanda Hyatt, Head of Fundraising. “Yet we’ve been delighted at how supporters have continued to fundraise using a mixture of creativity and ingenuity; one supporter is running 13 ‘self-designed’ marathons in 13 months.” One positive is that the hospice’s Events team is focussing on working with people to achieve their fundraising ambition in memory of a loved one. “We can really help people to define their activity and maximise their fundraising ability,” explains Fiona Gray, Events Fundraiser. The charity’s annual Lights of Love remembrance service will be a virtual event this year. People receive a Lights of Love box in return for a donation which includes a candle, order of service and Christmas decoration to enhance the experience of watching online. In this way, the service can be opened up to more people than ever before. As Fiona says, “This year, it is more important than ever to have the opportunity to come together to remember loved ones and reflect on the events of this year. The Lights of Love is a wonderful uplifting service to remember those no longer with us.” l St Peter & St James Hospice North Common Road, North Chailey, BN8 4ED 01444 471598 enquiries@stpjhospice.org www.stpjhospice.org October 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 77

ADVERTISING FEATURE With the pandemic causing redundancies, Everycare can offer staff highly flexible work arrangements that can fit seamlessly with childcare needs or other work commitments. No experience is required because all the necessary training is in-house. Important qualities David’s team are looking for include compassion, understanding, and empathy, plus an ability to listen and respond to the needs of the client. There are also opportunities to take care certificated qualifications Applicants must be able to drive as care is offered to clients over a wide area including Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Cuckfield, Ditchling, Hurstpierpoint and several surrounding villages. David stressed it is not ‘9-5 work’ it’s an opportunity to be part time or full-time, working hours to suit the individual carer. Pay is market-leading; carers receive a mileage allowance, holiday pay, pension, and are fully insured. The work is hugely rewarding and changes lives for the better. Keen to keep in touch with the grass roots of Everycare, David views individual staff welfare and the wellbeing of the team as a whole as

Safe at Home O

ne of the most important things the pandemic has taught us over the last few months is the importance of home. Crucially, vulnerable older people may not be aware that they have the choice to remain living in their own home, even though they may need regular or round the clock care. I met David Dimelow who established Everycare in Mid Sussex in 2013. David and his team have received glowing testimonials from clients and their families ever since. He explained that worried families may not realise their loved ones don’t need to ‘go into a home’ because his team can provide affordable, compassionate care in those existing, familiar surroundings at home. Domiciliary care means trusted staff visit clients in their own home, providing regular company; and undertake personal care, meal preparation, medication, laundry, shopping and cleaning duties. Carers can assist with outings, accompanying clients to medical appointments or to activities such as swimming. Once a client’s specific needs are recognised, a 78 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

One thing we’ve learnt this year is the importance of home, so we sent Ruth Lawrence to meet David Dimelow and learn how Everycare can help individuals remain living in familiar surroundings as they become older and more vulnerable tailor-made care package can be swiftly assembled and put into action. People who have suffered injury or illness often need short-term support to regain their independence and with a tailored care package they can quickly recover their normal lives. There are no commitments, other than to give just a weeks notice when the service is no longer required. David confided; although his team of over seventy care for in excess of one hundred clients he could provide care services for twice that number if more staff can be found.

just as important to him as client care, welfare and wellbeing. Testimonials from clients’ families speak volumes about the high esteem Everycare carers are held in by those they support. One gentleman wrote, “The Everycare staff have been far more than just carers” and were “quite extraordinary” in looking after his relative who was able to stay in his own house until the end of his life. Another man praised, “the carers who over the years looked after my lovely wife with such care and compassion.” One lady wrote, “your care for my husband was no less than amazing which eased my stress and sadness with your kindness and understanding. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Anyone who feels their present employment does not acknowledge their value or reward their efforts would do well to consider working with people who need help to remain independent in their own home; something that we might all wish for in our older years. Should the needs of a client progress beyond routine home visits, there is usually no immediate need for

L-R: Sue Taplin, Katie Parsons, David Dimelow, Emma Kirby, Jenni Marsh, Karen Smith

them to leave their beloved home for unfamiliar surroundings. Everycare offer ‘24/7 Live In care’ for those who require a continual presence and continual support. This may work out to be more cost effective than people realise. When a person is surrounded by familiar possessions in the familiar surroundings of the home and garden they have always known, they tend to feel more relaxed and less vulnerable to illness or emotional turmoil. Friends can still visit as they always have done, and families are reassured when they visit their loved ones at home where they may have lived a lifetime. Once a client or family member has contacted Everycare, an initial home visit assesses specific needs and individual preferences, right down to how the client prefers their tea and coffee, how they like to be addressed and where they like to eat their meals. Carers adapt to meet the needs of the client, working around their routine to minimise change which elderly people often find difficult to deal with. Remaining at home and living out those twilight years in familiar surroundings is a wish that most of us would like to fulfil. Everycare are adept at providing the staff to keep clients at home; secure, happy and confident, able to live free from stress; allowing families members to relax - safe in the knowledge their loved one is being cared for, safe in the heart of their own home. l

We are committed to employing top quality carers. If you h ave a kind and caring nat ure and would be interested in joining the Everycare team , please contact the offi ce with your details.

FALL PREVENTION Jackie Hoare offers some advice for vulnerable residents who may be at risk of a fall

F

all-related injuries for people aged 65 and over account for more than 4,700 emergency hospital admissions annually in West Sussex. Falls are not an inevitable part of getting older; there are simple steps you can take to stay steady, reduce your chance of falling, and prevent serious injury if you do fall. KEEPING ACTIVE Staying active helps retain muscle strength and balance, so West Sussex County Council have produced a simple guide of ‘Super Six’ exercises to encourage this. This can be downloaded from the West Sussex County Council website. Hard copies of the guide are also available from Wellbeing Hubs located across West Sussex.

REGULAR CHECKS Make sure you get your eyes and feet checked regularly. If you are aged 60 or over, you are eligible for free eye tests on the NHS.

MEDICINE REVIEWS As we age, we are more likely to be prescribed medications; it’s estimated that 36% of people over 75 are on four or more different drugs. Never stop taking any prescribed medication suddenly as it could affect your balance. Make an appointment with your GP and get your medications reviewed annually.

There are many things you can do to make your home safer

A SAFER HOME Clear clutter and tidy any trailing cables which could cause trips. Consider installing an additional bannister on your stairs, or rails in the bathroom to assist you. TELL SOMEONE IF YOU DO FALL If you do fall over, tell

someone. Discuss any concerns with your GP if you’ve had more than one fall in the last year, or if you feel unsteady or dizzy when on your feet and walking. KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU DO FALL There’s lots of useful advice available online or by visiting your local Wellbeing Hub. As the country continues to move through strange times, Jamie Crow looks at some of the options for those couples hoping to celebrate their special day

Going to the A

big challenge faces those couples who are looking ahead to their wedding day. Recent times have led to uncertainty, with many couples having paid significant costs up front, only to have their magical day cancelled or postponed. Despite reports of struggles to rebook dates, or difficulties with getting that all-important deposit returned, there is still an abundance of options in Sussex, allowing couples to celebrate their wedding before the year is out. Sussex is full of beautiful and unique locations to celebrate your nuptials. Venues are reopening, ready to welcome you and your wedding party with open arms. The county is

Chapel a hotspot for many types of settings, from converted barns to halls, farms, churches and even castles. Alternatively, many hotels are now providing services in rural idylls, bijou hideaways and even on some seafronts. Be it the heartland north of the Downs, on the South Downs themselves, through to the beaches and piers dotted along the coast, there’s somewhere just for you.

Your special day can still happen in a stunning environment While there are currently restrictions on the number of guests allowed at weddings, that doesn’t make it impossible to enjoy your big day. If you had your heart set on a huge venue, you may still be able to achieve it, albeit with fewer guests. Venues are working overtime to stay within the restrictions, whilst retaining the atmosphere and sense of celebration that comes with a big occasion. Alternatively, consider a quainter,

quieter affair in a smaller environment. An officiant may be willing to conduct a ceremony in a private setting and it could be worth looking into. Picture the scene, just you and your spouse with your immediate nearest and dearest, enjoying the most intimate of weddings. Sometimes, smaller is better, more romantic, and more memorable. I recently read of a couple who arranged to marry on their farm, surprising both sets of parents who believed they were all off to afternoon tea! If you do choose to postpone your wedding until next year, don’t be afraid to think about an alternative day of the week. Venues across the UK are expecting a surge in bookings for 2021 after the events of this year, so all is not lost. As most ceremonies take place at weekends, a midweek wedding may be the answer, with many venues more than happy to take the extra bookings for off-peak slots. Whatever the outcome, remember above all else that your special day can still happen in a stunning environment. It may just need a couple of tweaks from the original plan. l October 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 85

WEDDINGS

Wedding Trends As well as being incredibly exciting, planning a wedding is a time to express yourself as a couple. Adele Trathan has compiled some on-trend ideas and suggestions to help make your day unique, special to you, and memorable for all your guests!

Food for Feasting

Eco-Friendly Sustainability is a key concern for many couples and there are plenty of ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Incorporating living trees and plants as dĂŠcor, means they can be replanted, or given as gifts as a reminder of your special day. Choosing local English wines, beers and spirits cut out those air miles and boost the local economy. Eliminate the need for single use plastics by choosing natural petal confetti and opting for bamboo straws and cutlery at the reception.

A great way to cultivate conversation is to serve platters of food centrally on tables for guests to share. These can be themed to reflect the personal culinary favourites of the bride and groom; such as a Tuscan styled vegetarian feast, an exotic Indian banquet, decadent desserts or even a local cheeseboard.

Tactile Textures In these days of online digital overload the sense of touch is becoming more important as we crave the feeling of tangible materials.

Why not use a rough parchment paper for invitations, or dress the dining tables with indulgent velvet runners, or utilise rustic hessian table placemats to add a truly tactile sensory experience.

Floral Statements Dress to Impress Embroidered dresses, crochet work and Victoriana are all current but with a contemporary edge. Private or public declarations of love can be sewn into fabric to customise and personalise a bridal gown. High neck lines and low hemlines may seem modest but think sheer delicate fabrics, plunging backlines, lace and layers that create drama, glamour and impact.

88 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

Flowers and plants can offer a wonderful sense of individuality to any wedding day. Table centrepieces work best on a low level so that guests can converse easily and not be obscured by large displays. To complement this, there’s a shift towards using floral displays as impact installations; from the floor level up or ceiling level down, and everything in between!

EAT LOCAL THIS

Christmas Jamie Crow offers his thoughts on the need to support local eateries in the lead-up to the festive season

I

t really may not be what you want to hear (I despair of anyone who starts playing Christmas songs before December 1st), but the festive season really isn’t that far off, and it’s always good to plan ahead so you can enjoy your time with loved ones properly. With that in mind, it’s looking likely many restaurants will be open for business on Christmas Day, so after everything that’s happened this year, why not take the pressure off yourself and head out for lunch? You’ll be able to relax and enjoy the day in style, plus you’ll be helping out a local business that needs your custom more than ever before.

If a traditional turkey dinner doesn’t tickle your fancy, we are lucky in Sussex to have an abundant food culture, with many alternatives to a roast available. Last year I ate Christmas curry at a local Indian restaurant and it turned out to be one of the best Christmas dinners I’ve ever had. Of course, there’s still the run-up to the big day itself, so many eateries will be offering deals for festive meals and socially distanced parties beforehand. Just make sure to try and book ahead – if the success of the Eat Out To Help Out scheme is anything to go by, places are likely to get busy rather quickly! l

French Style

Beef Casserole As the darker nights draw in, comfort food is the perfect solution. Gillian Reay-Young shares her recipe for a mouth-watering French style casserole INGREDIENTS 900g (2lb) stewing beef, cut into 3cm (1 inch) cubes 225g (8oz) onions, peeled and chopped 4 tbsp olive oil 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped 2 tbsp tomato puree Red wine (or red grape juice) – enough to cover the top of the beef Quarter of an orange (with peel) 50g (2oz) black olives Bouquet garni

SERVES

92 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

METHOD Heat the oil in a large pan or casserole dish and sautĂŠ the beef on all sides until it starts to brown. Add the onion and garlic, cooking until the onion looks translucent, then stir in the tomato puree and pour over the wine or grape juice to a level that almost covers the beef. Add the orange and bouquet garni, cover with a lid and simmer in a slow oven (325F/160C, Gas Mark 3, Aga bottom oven) for one hour.

1 2 3

Give the casserole a stir then leave 4 it to cook for another 30 minutes to an hour with the lid off, so the fluid

level reduces but does not dry up. When the meat is tender, remove the orange and bouquet garni then stir in the black olives to finish. Serve with flat noodles and vegetables of your choice. Delicious!

5

TIP: If you have any wine left in the bottle, DO NOT pour it down the sink. Pour the wine into an ice cube tray and freeze, ready to use in your next casserole, sauce or marinade.

IN SEASON

The life and times of the

T

PUMPKIN

he pumpkin is a manysplendoured vegetable. Actually, this isn’t strictly true: the pumpkin is in fact a fruit. Big, round and generally a rich deep orange colour (they can also come in green, white and blue), these giant winter squashes are relatively easy to grow and make excellent soup, pies, cakes and even beer. They also have medicinal qualities for humans and their pets. Most of all, perhaps, in the minds of children they are indelibly linked to Halloween, as glowing jack-o’-lanterns. Pumpkins are by no means a new phenomenon. It is thought that they’ve been around since at least 7,000 BC. Originally native to Mexico and the southern states of the United States of America, pumpkins are now grown all over the world. China and India produce nearly half the yearly global crop of around 27 million tonnes. The largest fruits can exceed a tonne in weight. Britain grows more than 15 million pumpkins each year. Sussex has a number of pumpkin patches which children can visit this month, to pick the biggest and most shapely specimen in readiness for October 31st.

98 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

Peter d’Aguilar takes a look at all things pumpkin, its origins and its surprising number of uses

Well over a million pumpkins are purchased annually in Britain, just for Halloween, meaning the fruit has cemented itself in popular culture. Pumpkins have appeared in many fairy tales and folk law – Cinderella’s stagecoach, the headless horseman’s replacement head in Sleepy Hollow, Jack

Pumpkinhead in the sequel to The Wizard of Oz and regular references in the Harry Potter stories. When selecting a pumpkin for decoration, it’s best to choose one with its stalk still attached, firm to the touch with a deep orange colour, symmetrically round and free from blemishes, rot, cuts and soft spots. It should be stored somewhere dry and handled as little as possible. If eating is your main priority, however, select a small one as their meat is sweeter and less stringy. As well as being versatile, pumpkins are very nutritious – low in calories, fat and sodium, but rich in potassium and Vitamin A. Pumpkin pie has always been closely associated with America’s Thanksgiving celebrations, but there are numerous ways of cooking pumpkins; they can be grilled, baked, broiled, steamed, curried or roasted whole in hot embers - as originally practiced by Native Americans. The pumpkin shell, the leaves and even the flowers are also edible. Roasted pumpkin seeds are also very appetising. Their iron, vitamins, zinc and magnesium can be beneficial

for the heart, diabetes, detoxification and a good night’s sleep. Pumpkin seed oil can have medicinal qualities, sometimes helping with depression, healthy hair and skin, prostate and the menopause. If you fancy growing your own pumpkins, here’s a few tips. Sow the seeds on their side at a depth of one inch in small compost-filled pots between April and June. Water regularly and when the roots start to show, move them to a larger pot. Once the seedlings are established in early summer, plant

As well as being versatile, pumpkins are very nutritious them outside – six to ten feet apart in a sunny, sheltered spot. Feed and water them. Remove any substandard fruit, leaving two or three on each plant. To avoid rotting, raise fruit off the ground on bricks or wood as they grow bigger. Remove any leaves that keep sunlight off the fruit. Protect them with straw if there’s a risk of an early frost. Leave the fruit on the plant for as long as possible to mature and ripen. When the stem cracks and the skin feels tough, the fruit is ready for picking. Harvest with a long stalk before the first frost. Expose

the pumpkin to sunlight outside for ten days or keep it indoors for four days, to harden. Pumpkins can be stored for between four to six months. l

HALLOWEEN

As Halloween approaches, Robert Veitch delves into his memory banks and encyclopaedias to discover a little more about jack-o’-lanterns

Jack’s Back A

s a small child growing up in the 1970s, my distant memories of jacko’-lanterns began with reruns of the rather wonderful 1966 cartoon It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. My first lantern was hollowed out the year I left primary school. Pumpkins weren’t so plentiful then so I used a marrow and became transfixed by the candlelight shimmering through my creation under the moonlight. My three sisters peered out from indoors, called out ‘marrow man’ and laughed. I was crushed. Cartoons and ginormous courgettes aside, Jack of the lantern’s origin is one of myth and legend. Apparently, Jack was a lazy blacksmith and trickster who trapped the Devil with a cross, stripping him of his powers in the process. Once the Devil agreed not to take Jack’s soul after his death, he was released from the trap. As a trickster and sinner Jack couldn’t enter heaven after he died, and his agreement

FOR MORE with the Devil meant he would not enter hell. To light his way though eternity in limbo, the Devil tossed Jack a burning ember which he placed in a hollowed out turnip. Jack of the lantern and his soul still search the Earth for a final resting place.

Gourds, mangelwurzels, turnips and pumpkins were all popular Jack-o’-lanterns are traditionally seen at Halloween, itself a key element of the Christian Hallowtide Triduum, along with All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Placed outside front doors, they were thought to be a way for people to protect themselves from evil spirits. In the past gourds,

mangelwurzels, turnips and pumpkins were all popular, but in recent times pumpkins have become the vegetable of choice. At my cousin’s farm in Ontario, Canada, pumpkin fields stretch across the plains into infinity and beyond, grown just for Halloween. The grotesque faces found on jack-o’-lanterns, originally carved into them to ward off evil spirits, have advanced to an elevated art form in recent years. These elaborate images are light years ahead of Charlie Brown and ‘marrow man’ from my childhood. Modern protocols suggest that if you leave a lit jacko’-lantern outside your front door, then expect

the doorbell to ring on Halloween. Whether it’s kids at the door dressed in an old white sheet and a Donald Trump mask, or the Devil himself beckoning you to the underworld, is something you’ll only discover by peering out from behind your net curtains! l

CRAFTING

Spooktacular ideas FOR THE FAMILY

From pom pom pumpkins to homemade outfits, Hanna Prince shows us how to make this Halloween your most creative one yet

W

hat better way to enter into the spooky spirit of Halloween than by getting stuck into a family craft project? Low-cost, easy and fun for everyone, these creepily cool creative challenges will offer hours of entertainment for all ages. DIY DRESSING UP No outfit sorted for trick-or-treating? Simply make your own. All you’ll need for a DIY witch’s hat is black construction paper, scissors and glue – fashion a cone from the paper, cut a fringe at the base and stick on a circular brim for an instant outfittopper. Pair with a black top and a tutu made from strips of bin liner looped around a long ribbon. If monsters are more popular than witches in your house, make a spinechilling mask using papier-mâché layered onto a giant balloon. Paint on the scariest face you can manage and add pipe cleaner hair for a seriously frightening costume. HAIR-RAISING DECORATIONS Get your house Halloween-ready with some crafty décor. Paper garlands are straightforward and super fun to make. Create your own ghostly paper garlands by accordion folding paper into three-inch sections, tracing a ghost shape on the uppermost piece and cutting it out (making sure you

leave one arm connected). You can do something similar with pumpkins, spiders or any other Halloween-themed shape that takes your fancy. For added sparkle, cut eyes out of your paper figures and attach them to a line of fairy lights so that the bulbs show from behind the holes.

Use household materials to create your very own Halloween characters PERFECT PUMPKINS Pumpkins are a Halloween staple, but there’s far more you can do with

this seasonal vegetable than simply carving a face into its flesh. Give your pumpkin a quirky touch by painting it with a monster, a bat or a spine-tingling Halloween scene. Melt wax crayons down from the top to create colourful ‘hair’, stick on sparkly craft pom poms for a bit of bling or dip the stem in glue and then cover it with glitter. If you like the idea of a traditional candle-holding pumpkin, try carving and painting a haunted house, bats or a ghostly figure. There are plenty of online tutorials available that will help get you started. MONSTER MAKING Use household materials to create your very own Halloween characters. Paint a toilet roll in your favourite colour, then add goggly eyes, woollen hair, pipe cleaner arms and a toothy black marker grin for a perfect monster. Leftover ice lolly sticks can be used to craft a haunted house – or build a bigger version with old boxes. Go scavenging for rocks in the garden, paint rock monsters and place them around the house as spooky surprises. Or use an old tissue box to model a monstrous Halloween-themed face. It’s amazing what fun you can have with the contents of the recycling box! l

BOOK REVIEW

READING THE AUTUMN AWAY From adultery to murder, from rural England to Victorian London, Elizabeth Kay reviews her must-read picks for the season WHATEVER IT TAKES by Adele Parks

THE CHAMELEON HUSBAND

by Patricia H. Squire This is a short easy read, the sort of book that would fill in the time while you’re waiting for a parcel to be delivered. It starts with the funeral of Barry, a middle-aged man who dies suddenly of a heart attack. He leaves a widow and two daughters, but before they’re out of the crematorium car park another wife turns up, and two days later a third. All three women are very different, and clearly appeal to different sides of Barry’s character.

Whether it’s murder or suicide each time hangs in the balance for a while, but I didn’t guess the ending It does stretch credulity to believe that a deception could last this long without any of the wives suspecting anything. The first marriage lasted twenty-two years, the second eighteen and the third one nine. All the marriages run concurrently, and all three wives accept without question that Barry worked away from home a lot. And then people start dying… Whether it’s murder or suicide each time hangs in the balance for a while, but I didn’t guess the ending. I found the characters a little thin and the situation hard to credit, but I was able to suspend disbelief sufficiently to keep reading because I really did want to know the outcome. 106 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

This one starts with a leaving party. Irritatingly perfect Eloise is leaving the bright lights of the London she loves to move to Dartmouth. Her husband Mark isn’t happy living in a city, and would like to be closer to his parents. Eloise is distraught at leaving her needy best friend Sara, who is desperate for a baby but has failed to get pregnant; Eloise and Mark have three children. Moreover, Eloise doesn’t know how she is going to cope without the little luxuries London supplies. Things are worse than expected though, as it quickly becomes clear that Mark’s mother Margaret has dementia.

It’s a novel that holds your attention and portrays people with warts and all This side of the book is sensitively and convincingly handled, and you sympathise with Margaret while at the same time wanting to throttle Sara, whose selfish demands and erratic behaviour are thoroughly unreasonable. But it’s the dementia that is the real focus of the book, as Margaret unwittingly reveals a family secret that she has kept quiet for decades, and it has far-reaching consequences. The ending is a bit hard to take, but it’s a novel that holds your attention and portrays people with warts and all.

BLACK BEAUTY

by Anna Sewell First published in 1877, this is an enduring classic that now has its place as historical fiction, as well as being the first book that campaigned for animal welfare. It has sold over 50 million copies to date. Although it wasn’t written as a children’s book, it has been a favourite among older children for a long time. It is narrated by the horse Black Beauty, and follows his life as a carefree colt in a field with his mother to his experiences as a carriage horse, which is then followed by much darker days as a cab horse in London.

This is an enduring classic that holds its place within the best of historical fiction Sewell’s intention was to highlight the frequently cruel treatment of working animals, and led to legislation on animal rights both in the UK and the USA. It paints an accurate picture of Victorian England in both town and countryside, and is an engaging and thought-provoking read. It’s an anthropomorphic perspective, and the horses are given characters and behave accordingly. Not all their endings are happy ones. The reader is consequently rooting for Black Beauty right up to the end – he is depicted as the perfect Christian, always doing his best and never acting aggressively towards anyone. This really ought to be essential reading for any child, as it is such an important book.

EDUCATION

Call the Midwife When it comes to childbirth, it’s assumed that a midwife is always on call, ready for action, but it wasn’t always the case, as Ruth Lawrence explains the role of Alice Gregory in modern day midwifery

A

lice Sophia Gregory was born in 1867, midway through Queen Victoria’s reign, when infant mortality was so high that up to a third of children would never reach their fifth year. The Gregory’s lived in Lambeth. After her father became Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, Alice’s family were not subjected to the effects of poverty The British Hospital for Mothers and Babies, in Samuel Street

she had witnessed growing up in such a densely populated area. At this time, tradition dictated midwives delivered all babies, and they had important legal duties enshrined in law and enforced by the church. Being women, they were not allowed to establish Guilds but their work was regulated by a licensing system. In rural areas, local midwives would not have

been affected by such legislation. The midwife worked alone, travelling as required and staying in the home of the ‘mother to be’ until the birth. Legally, she was only allowed to deliver ‘natural’ births and had to call a doctor or surgeon when problems arose. Many midwives had no formal education but gained experience working alongside older practitioners.

West Street in Alfriston marks the site of her former home Women were not admitted to medical school until 1869 and by 1880 over 100 midwives held a diploma from the London Obstetrical Society. The following year, the Midwives Institute was established, with the aim of ensuring all women, irrespective of circumstance, would be able to use the services of a trained midwife. When Alice was about 16, she lodged with her friend Lelia Parnell. Lelia had completed a month long course at the

Maud she developed her ideas for the training of midwives. Their experience of childbirth made them realise that more and better trained midwives were required. In 1903 Alice began letter writing, in a nationwide search for a suitable site to develop. Eventually, the Bishop of Southwark introduced her to the Archdeacon of Lewisham, Charles Ernest Escreet, who lived in Woolwich, an area of poverty and limited hospital facilities. Escreet told Alice he knew of a place that would

British Lying-In Hospital and then been appointed matron at a small hospital in Paulton, Somerset. The two women shared a Christian faith as well as their professional interests. Shortly after, they were joined by a third friend, Maud Cashmore, who trained as a midwife under Lelia’s tutoring. Alice was a probationer midwife, but eventually trained at a maternity hospital in Clapham, an experience that influenced her views on teaching and the practice of midwifery. Alice made her living as a district midwife, but along with Lelia and

Their experience of childbirth made them realise, more and better trained midwives were required be suitable and showed her properties at Wood Street, later known as Woodhill, then helped her persuade the relevant authorities to agree to her scheme. The new hospital had beds for eight patients and was opened on May 11th 1905 by Princess Christian. As well as training midwives and admitting women for childbirth, the hospital was a base for district midwives. It amalgamated with the British Lying–In Hospital in 1915.

After going from strength to strength, in 1922 the hospital moved to new premises in Samuel Street, with 40 beds and staff accommodation. Alice became Honorary Secretary of the British Hospital for Mothers and Babies and made certain that training for midwives was extended to make childbirth safer for mother and baby. During WWII the hospital was damaged in a bombing raid. Alice oversaw the construction of a new wing, which was opened in 1944 by the Princess Royal. She retired on medical grounds the same year. Alice and Maud moved to Alfriston, where she died shortly after, in 1946. A crucifix at the side of the road at the top of West Street in Alfriston marks the site of her former home, The Sanctuary. The three friends were commemorated in the British Hospital for Mothers and Babies chapel with the motto ‘A threefold cord is not quickly broken’ and they left a lasting legacy of support for women giving birth. Alice made a significant contribution to the development of training for midwives and, because of her tireless work, childbirth became a safer experience for both the mother and her baby. l Reference: www.greenwich100.com/Three Midwives and an Archdeacon

OPINION

IF YOU

ask me...

THIS MONTH, FLO WHITAKER VISITS A BANK – AND REVEALS HER EPIC TALE OF TRYING TO OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT…

Once upon a time, opening a bank account was simple. You wandered into your local branch (remember those) and spoke to an apathetic staff member who, in weary tones, offered you a choice of two accounts. “This one is a savings account, the other type comes with an important-looking cheque book. Feel free to steal the pens on your way out.” And that, dear reader, was that. You completed a form, handed over the money, and were allowed to leave. At no point during the process were you bombarded with details of “Our exciting range of carefully selected offers: Interested in a car insurance quote? Upgrade your mobile phone contract? How much are you paying for your gas? We’ve got great deals on travel insurance – though if the government suddenly decides your destination is looking a bit dodgy, that’ll probably render your policy void, so it’s a good idea if you look up the phone number of the relevant embassy or high commission before you travel, cos you might be paddlin’ home on yer own, mate.” Having been held captive for half-an-hour, I tartly reminded the customer support operative that we had only just met, so I wasn’t their “mate”, “luv” or “sweetheart”– and I most definitely wasn’t a “guy/guys”. Any fool could see I was a traditionally-built woman (who was getting angrier by the minute). What’s that? Was I interested in switching my electricity contract? No. This is a bank. I just want to open a bank account. Arrrghhhh!

METHOD Preheat your oven to 220C. If you are keeping your pumpkin to serve the soup in, cut off the top and carefully spoon out the pumpkin seeds, and very carefully cut or spoon the pumpkin flesh out. Peel and cut the sweet potato and carrot into cubes about the same size as the pumpkin. Place altogether on a roasting tray and toss in 2 tablespoons of olive oil, sea salt and pepper and roast for 30 minutes or until tender and starting to brown a little. On a small roasting tray spread the pumpkin seeds out, drizzle with oil and salt and bake for a few minutes, then set aside. Keep an eye on these as they can burn very quickly. Meanwhile, heat the rest of the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery, ground coriander and stir. Cook for 5-10 minutes or until the onion has softened. FASHION

THAT OL’

Black Magic A mysterious and seductive colour, Lisa de Silva tells us why black remains one of the most popular choices in the fashion world

A

mainstay of catwalks across the globe, fashion’s love affair with black remains a constant in a world of everchanging hemlines and silhouettes. But just what is it about that ol’ black magic that casts such a spell over our wardrobes? Clearly, there are rational reasons behind the enduring popularity of black. On days when we feel less than lithe and lissom, we slip into black, and abracadabra, our lumps and bumps are

Black has the power to bestow both drama and intrigue

magically smoothed away. And what other colour has the wizardry to be so versatile? Black looks good with anything you chose to mix it with and that’s why most fashion classics work best in black – the cashmere sweater, the leather jacket, the ‘good’ pair of trousers and the iconic little black dress. When it comes to investment dressing, buy it in black and you won’t go far wrong. On a more emotional level, despite its dark and sinister overtones, black has the power to bestow both drama and intrigue. A fact appreciated by Hamlet, who cut a real dash in the Danish court in his “customary suit of solemn black.” Modern women first woke up to this power in the 1950s with the birth of the little black dress. Even the simplest and most innocent of styles worn in deep inky black could put the most faint-hearted girls firmly in the spotlight. Since then, we have learnt that for drama, confidence and impact,

black will never let you down. But that brings us to another magical trick that black has up its sleeve. Just as it can cast you centre-stage, black need never reveal your true colours. For black is also the great disguiser, the bringer of mystery and anonymity. Black allows you to travel incognito – witness those ubiquitous dark glasses. Shroud yourself in black and hey presto, you’re suddenly a deep, meaningful and poetic bohemian, not a self-conscious rookie with low self-esteem. A trick performed to perfection by the Beatniks, artists and students in post-war Paris in the 1940s. If all that mastery isn’t enough, black is also the colour of choice when it comes to seduction. Bringing an edge of menace and thrill to stockings and lingerie, black can transform even the most chaste into a sophisticated femme fatale. With the power to be slimming, versatile, dramatic, impactful, mysterious and seductive, it is quite clear why that ol’ black magic will never be out of fashion. l October 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 115

Do you feel comfortable with the dentist? This may be a gut-instinct but do you feel they are listening to you and giving you bespoke advice related to your mouth and habits. You only have one set of teeth so be careful who you entrust them to. Remember this should be a relationship for life; if you do not feel comfortable, find someone else.

How to Choose A Dentist

Choosing a Dentist can be confusing and a bit daunting, so having the right dentist can help calm any fears you have about an impending dental visit

Is the practice well established? Experience and continuity of care can be very valuable. Will the dentist or hygienist be there next time you have your check-up? It takes time to build a relationship on both sides. They will get to know your mouth, what materials work best in your mouth and how often to review you. Changing dentists regularly can mean you end up with more restorative work undertaken.

3

5

It is best if you can get referrals from as many sources as possible Ask some of your relatives, colleagues or friends if they can recommend reliable dentists.

6

2

Do they have a dental hygienist? Healthy gums are as important as healthy teeth. Does the hygienist clean your mouth thoroughly?

Ask questions The most important thing to remember is to ask questions! Make a list of questions to ask before your appointment as you may forget.

Call Oakmead Dental on 01342 325363 and see how we at Oakmead in East Grinstead are changing Dentistry. Do they guide you in what are the best oral hygiene aids for your mouth?

4

Training and further education Look for award winning practices and those committed to continuing education.

“I wanted to finally express my appreciation for everything the staff at Oakmead have done for me over the past 20 years. Yes, I was surprised it had been that long”

WELLBEING

Lisa de Silva takes us through the simple things we can do to help our environment and better ourselves in the process

E

ssential for the welfare of our planet, our health and our survival, environmental wellbeing encourages us to respect and live in harmony with our surroundings. When we protect the planet by living in an eco-friendly way, we are helping to build a sustainable environment in which all life forms can thrive. Yet while it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the challenges of climate change, resource depletion, excessive waste and pollution, there are many things that we as individuals can do to create a less toxic environment. To inspire you, we’ve put together some tips and ideas. RECYCLE, REUSE & REDUCE With an excellent local recycling service, there is no excuse for not recycling your packaging. We can also adopt a ‘make do and mend’ philosophy with clothing and furniture. Upcycle or donate unwanted items to charity, or give away free to your local community. With vintage and retro now highly fashionable, think about buying quality pre-loved clothes and furniture as well as new. Reusable bags, bottles and masks will also help to cut your carbon footprint. Replace cling film with reusable silicone lids or beeswax paper for storing food. Any food waste can be put to good use in a garden compost bin. Try to reduce consumption of resources like water and electricity. This goes hand in hand with the opportunity for a daily digital detox, so try turning off all your devices at least an hour before bedtime – you’ll sleep better and save money. LIVE PLASTIC-FREE Reducing the amount of plastic in our lives is both good for the planet and our health. Where possible, find a shop

CARING FOR THE PLANET operating a refillable system for dried goods, cereals, toiletries and cleaning products. Shop locally in markets and stores where packaging is minimal, and try growing or picking your own fruit and veg. Using a metal razor, bamboo toothbrush and plastic-free sanitary products can also help to reduce plastic consumption. TRANSPORT If it’s practical, walk or cycle to avoid using the car. Alternatively, think about car sharing for journeys to and from work or taking public transport. When planning UK and European holidays, consider taking the train, which can become part of the adventure itself. Clearly,

118 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

the COVID-19 pandemic is making some of these measures more difficult to implement, but looking to the future, it’s important to prioritise the protection of our planet and its limited resources.

ENJOY THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT Spending time in nature is possibly the best motivator for adjusting our lifestyles. Walking, forest bathing, wild swimming, hiking and cycling in the great outdoors, or even just spending time in a beautiful garden, will help to deepen our appreciation of the natural world and heighten our resolve to protect the environment in every way possible. l

PETS

Autumn’s well and truly arrived, and Teddy, along with his interpreter Helen Stockton, are steeling themselves for the rainy days to come

It’s a Dog’s Life I

t’s been an interesting year for many significant reasons, but the weather has also played its part. After a winter that had ‘Them Indoors’ planning an ark, we had a sunny spring and a summer that has, occasionally, forced a retreat to the shade for consumption of copious quantities of liquid refreshment and something from the barbeque – for ‘Them Indoors’ as well as me. However, as a fellow dog walker remarked the other day when we sloshed passed them in rainy weather that was less ‘mists and mellow fruitfulness’ and more ‘downpour and dreary dampness’, “That’ll be it until April then…” I do hope not.

It has to be said that I’m not a keen walker at the best of times It has to be said that I’m not a keen walker at the best of times. Other dogs may work themselves up to an excited frenzy at the sight of their lead, but I retreat miserably to my bed and have to be coaxed out with treats. Why would 120 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2020

I want to go out for a walk in dubious weather when I could be lounging in comfort on my own hearth? There are some dog owners who subscribe to the view that you shouldn’t walk your dog in inclement weather. However, as I will only attend to one of the necessary businesses of walking when I’m not in my own garden, out I have to go in order to go, if you follow my meaning. The Irish have the expression that there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes, and that’s a view ‘Her Indoors’ tends to subscribe to. She has a proper weatherproof anorak with a zip-in fleecy lining and a hood, waterproof trousers, walking boots and a range of gloves. Very attractive she looks too! Us dogs, however, are a bit more limited in our attire: it’s fur, long, short, or in between, depending where I am in the grooming cycle. ‘Her Indoors’ does occasionally add to my indignities with a coat to protect me from the worst of

the rain so that I don’t have to spend hours confined to the kitchen drying off. It previously belonged to my predecessor, the Boss, and it’s fluorescent. I look like I need the matching hard-hat and steel toecaps. I’ve tried passive resistance; it’s difficult to put a coat on a dog who refuses to get up, but ‘Her Indoors’ is remarkably persistent, positively terrier-like in fact. Still, I get my own back in the icy weather. We usually walk down small, country lanes that don’t get gritted, so they can be dicey if the temperature drops below freezing. I have a significant advantage as I’ve got fourwheel drive and a low centre of gravity, but ‘Her Indoors’ is tall and totters around on two legs. In spite of her best efforts, she does occasionally slip, and I’ve noticed on those occasions, that it’s usually, in some bizarre way, my fault. I just see it as payback time for forcing me out in the first place, whatever the weather! l

MONEY MATTERS

TAXING Concerns Robin Stevenson deliberates over three taxing issues which have come to his attention in recent times

A

few things have come across my desk in the last couple of months, some of which have caused a raised eyebrow or two. Firstly, I saw an interesting article on why raising taxes in a recession is the last thing the government should be doing, as it prevents growth and deters investment in the UK. This would appear to oppose my earlier thoughts on taxation during the COVID-19 pandemic, but I’m not sure it does. Yes, low tax rates are healthy for the economy but, put simply, what would we rather have? 100 people paying £100 or 90 people paying £110? My thoughts are that with the enormous costs the government has paid out in support, I expect HMRC are hoping for an immediate boost of income. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rishi Sunak announces a temporary increase to certain taxes, with the promise of later reductions bringing the taxes back down to previous levels. We will have to wait until the Autumn Budget, which usually happens in October or November. I also saw a recent report that HMRC have stepped up their enquiries into the amount of inheritance tax paid. Let’s try and avoid turning this into yet another inheritance tax article

and instead look at the headlines. The report mentioned that roughly one in four estates that have paid inheritance tax have been subject to an enquiry, and that these enquiries raised £274m in extra tax. What the report doesn’t give is details of the enquiries and how the extra tax figure has arisen. I daresay a good number of the enquiries dealt with the asset values used in the estate’s tax return, but I wonder how much of that tax has arisen because the various tax reliefs were wrongly applied and therefore disallowed. Inheritance tax, as we know it, has been around since the mid-1970s and was originally designed to be a tax paid by the wealthiest, but since its introduction, asset values have increased and the tax legislation hasn’t kept pace, meaning more and more families are being dragged into the inheritance tax net. Will the inheritance tax legislation be changed? Maybe, but it would need a major overhaul. Last year inheritance tax raised £5.2 billion, which seems a lot, but considering the budget deficit is reported to be £322 billion it’s small fry, so maybe the government will be concentrating on the big hitters of income tax, national insurance contributions and VAT. Again, we will have to wait until the Autumn budget. Lastly, I received an email offering me a tax refund. Naturally I’m always interested to see these and was all ready to forward it to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk, but then I noticed it was from a company offering to help me claim marriage allowance, which I thought was nice of them considering I’m not eligible for the allowance. But actually, much like a lot of the allowances and reliefs available in the UK tax system, the marriage allowance is easy to claim but complicated to understand, even more so considering it’s aimed at couples who are unlikely to have sought professional advice.

The report mentioned that roughly one in four estates that have paid inheritance tax have been subject to an enquiry If one spouse is earning less than £12,500 and the other is earning less than £50,000, then they can apply to transfer some of the unused personal allowance or ‘tax code’ so the higher earner pays less tax. You don’t need to employ an accountant or respond to an unsolicited email to make the claim, instead have your National Insurance number handy and telephone HMRC on 0300 200 3300 and ask to talk about marriage allowance, or go online at www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance and apply online yourself. The marriage allowance could reduce your tax bill by £250 this year, and a backdated claim could put some people in line for a £900 tax refund. I shudder to think how many couples are missing out on this tax allowance and are paying more tax than they need to. l Money Matters is written by Robin Stevenson CTA ATT TEP, Head of Taxation & Private Clients, Swindells LLP Chartered Accountants & Chartered Tax Advisers Tel: 01825 763366 As individual circumstances vary considerably from person to person, the views expressed in this article are meant only as a general guide, and any specific advice required should be sought from your own professional adviser or by contacting the writer at his place of work.
