2012. 115 mins. Set in a small lower class community in rural Denmark, Lucas, the only male assistant in a kindergarten school is charged by the police of abusing the five year old daughter of Theo, one of his best friends. Although depicted as innocent from the start of the film, as a result of the allegation, Lucas is sacked and finds himself a pariah in this tightly knit community. This taut drama is set against a background of deer hunts which bind men together in a macho culture which may of course brutally cast out someone who seems to have broken a taboo. Doors open at 19:30. Refreshments, free parking.

hurst village cinema: to be or not to be (u) Players Theatre, High Street, Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex Director: Ernst Lubitsch, 1942, 99 mins. A Polish theatre troupe is targeted by Nazi invaders during World War II and forced to perform certain plays. However, the actors manage to put their theatrical skills to good use to outwit and befuddle the German soldiers. There’s taste, and there’s this fabulously funny and original wartime comedy from director Ernst Lubitsch, which transcends taste. Witty and cleverly satirical by turns, this movie avoids giving offence by its magnificent casting, with Jack Benny as “that great, great actor Joseph Tura” and the wonderful comedienne Carole Lombard, in her final
film, released after her untimely death in a plane crash. Don’t miss the opening, a hysterical gag concerning Hitler. There’s poignancy, too, and a terrific running joke involving Lombard’s admirer, played by the young Robert Stack.Tickets £4 (£6 non-members) from Mishon Mackay, online or on the door. Refreshments available. www.hurstfilms.com
