Dear Sussex Living… … On behalf of the Management Committee for the Lingfield Nature Reserves, I am writing to thank you for the article in the April issue. This has created a very positive response of complimentary comments from local residents on an excellent article which promotes both the history of the Reserves and its current activities. It is good to know that Sussex Living is supporting projects such as our Nature Reserves, as it makes people aware of the importance of actively working together to protect these precious green spaces. Julie Hearn, Lingfield Nature Reserves …I received a fair response to the advertorial in April; it was definitely worth the effort. I shall be looking at doing something next year for the spring. Stephen Kinnard, Statues and Ornaments, Handcross … I was particularly interested in your article ‘Secret Sussex Army’ in the June issue. I am glad you were able to access Stewart Angell’s book. Of special local interest is the Operational Base of the Staplefield Patrol which was (and is) located in a wood between Ansty and Bolney and, at least in 1994, was still partially equipped, and Stewart Angell includes some photos of it. The existence of this group was unknown to its parent Home Guard unit despite the fact that at least three men were members of both, including its Leader, Frank Masefield-Baker, later Mayor of Brighton. The Home Guard unit itself performed a useful function in guarding the Balcombe Viaduct, which it is reputed to have done at least in part from the back bar of the recently demolished ‘Fountain Inn’ at Handcross, some four miles away. Peter C Benner, Warninglid @CARTPress @sussexliving @Britresistarch The piece looks fantastic! Thanks very much – hope your readers enjoying hearing more about the #auxunits #ww2 @St Peter & St James A huge thank you to @sussexliving for its great coverage on pages 52 &53 in the June mag. @NikkiSalsa #FF @sussexliving A fantastic local magazine bursting with local events & charities :) xx The magazine with a big heart x
