Editor’s COMMENT

September is here! That gorgeous feeling of new adventures, fresh starts and renewed energy is in the air, and I for one can’t help but get carried away with it. I guess it goes back to school days, but I always like to start a new project at this time of year, even if nowadays I don’t get as much time to fi nish it!

Our ever-popular Education Feature starts on page 23, and consists of two really interesting features to enjoy. Robert Veitch learned all about the world of CSI at Haywards Heath Police Station, and Sasha Kanal took a look at after school clubs. Talking about her school days, Katie Derham settled down with Lisa de Silva for a good chat, which you can read about from page 35. A true Renaissance woman of the 21st Century, Katie has carved out a highly successful media career, along with maintaining a fulfi lling home life bringing up her two daughters and sometimes even fi nding time to make some jam! Living in Mid Sussex, Katie is very involved with the local community, being patron of St Peter & St James Hospice and President of the Burgess Hill Symphony Orchestra. And finally, we are very sad to say goodbye to Sonya, who has decided to retire. Sonya is very well known in the area, having sold advertising in Mid Sussex since 1998, and been with Sussex Living for the last 7 ½ years. She will be greatly missed by us all, and I’m sure all of her clients as well, but we know Sonya will love enjoying more leisure time with her husband. Keep in touch Sonya!

I Only Have Eyes for Ewe No longer such a common view on the South Downs, a shepherd and his flock were once ten a penny. Robert Veitch investigates the local Southdown breed The Southdown is one of the oldest breeds of sheep. So old, it was thought they were shipped to Jamestown in America with British settlers, as far back as 1609. Restrictions on their wool trading in the USA became a minor contributory factor that led to the American War of Independence. The standardisation of the breed was credited to John Ellman who was born in Hartfield in 1753. Ellman inherited Place Farm at Glynde

By the early nineteenth century over 200,000 ewes were living on the South Downs WEST SUSSEX RECORD OFFICE The West Sussex Record Office is always looking for new material, so do get in touch if you think you have something suitable. in 1780 from his father and it was here he developed the modern Southdown Sheep. The once tall, lean animal was selectively bred into a smaller more compact beast, with a good fleece and meaty carcass. By the early nineteenth century over 200,000 ewes were living on the South Downs. A century later there were 359 registered flocks, although shortly after World War I the number of flocks had shrunk to 245. During World War II the South Downs were used for military training and the breed declined further. The archive at the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester contains an interview from the Mid Sussex Times in 1966. ‘Mr Raymond Chandler of Truslers Hill, Albourne was the speaker at Burgess Hill Rotary Club, at Ockley Lodge Hotel, Keymer on March 1st. The story had a note of sadness as much of what Mr Chandler spoke about has now passed completely away. The picturesque old Sussex shepherd with his crook is no longer seen. Mr Chandler stated that the Southdown Sheep Society claimed to be one of the oldest breed societies in the kingdom. It was formed in 1891 and the fi rst flock book published a year later. By 1950 the number of flocks had dropped to 33. The flocks today numbered 62 and they were spread all over the UK. Mr Chandler said, “We should be proud of these compact little sheep whose home for centuries has been the Sussex Downs”. Rotarian L. Burnett remarked that the South Downs today were getting covered in scrub and asked whether the reason was the decrease in the number of sheep on the Downs. Mr Chandler said this was partly the reason. Another cause was the lack of rabbits. The latter had helped to keep scrub down, but rabbits had now been practically wiped out.’ It’s peculiar to read that just over 50 years ago, shepherds would be seen wandering the Downs with a crook in hand, tending their flocks; albeit at declining levels. More recently the Southdown breed has undergone something of a revival, and numbers are on the up. So next time you’re out rambling, and bump into Little Bo Peep, you’ll know a little more about those fluff y specks in the distance that she’s struggling to fi nd. www.sussexliving.com

HISTORY

by Robert Veitch

The ninth month of the calendar year used to be the seventh, so how did this come to be, and what does it all mean? Robert Veitch investigates

The meaning of

September The old rhyme “30 days hath September” would have been learnt ‘off by heart’ at primary school by many Sussex Living readers; but how did September come to be the month we know today? Recorded timekeeping was thought to have begun during the Bronze Age, based on movements of the sun and moon. Stonehenge was a Bronze Age construction and is a form of early clock. Calendars as we know them today began with the Roman calendar, which was credited to the mythical Romulus, after whom Rome is named. It was a lunar calendar, probably derived from the Ancient Greeks. The Roman year began in Martius (March) and ran through to December for a total of 304 days. The remaining days of the year were assigned no month but remained in unison with the solar year thanks to a process called intercalation. This is a procedure where days are inserted to make the ‘calendar year’ match the ‘solar year’ of 364.25 days. The seventh month had a simple etymology, ‘Septem’ being seven in Latin. At its creation, September (Septum) had 29 days. The seventh month was important as it contained an equinox and was half way through the solar year. Seven was a significant number throughout recorded history – only seven planets were visible in the sky. There were seven wonders of the ancient world, deadly sins, notes in a musical scale, hills of Rome, and days of the week. In 45BC the Roman calendar would be superseded by the Julian calendar, which was introduced by, and named after Julius Caesar. The number of months was extended to a dozen with the introduction of Ianuarius ( January) and Februarius

(February) at the start of the year. September became the ninth month, but was given an extra day, making 30. Seventy-five years later, The Roman Emperor Tiberius declined the opportunity to have September named after him and so the ninth month was still known as the seventh. The Julian calendar survived until 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII instigated the Gregorian calendar, which was an evolution of its predecessor. This evolution was a refinement that allowed Easter to be celebrated when the date and time of year correlated. It was a subtle change and also used intercalation to fix the timing of leap years at once every four years. September remains significant today: it’s the most popular birth month, but of course that might be down to a good Christmas. It’s the beginning of the academic year, the turning of the seasons and home to the Last Night of the Proms. Bearing in mind, ‘every day’s a school day’ try a little memory test; how does that rhyme finish? “April, June and November, All the rest have 31…”

With the introduction of Ianuarius (January) and Februarius (February) at the start of the year, September became the ninth month

BY MARY WHITE

Washday Past & Present Local resident Mary White shares her childhood memories of washdays past with her grandmother in South Wales, where an open fi re, a stiff breeze and a good bowl of porridge helped the day along

It is a cold wet Monday in winter, and thanks to an automatic washing machine, a tumble dryer and a steam iron, a perfect day for staying in and doing the washing. My grandmother, Polly Chivers, who lived in a miner’s cottage in South Wales, would have had no concept of this. I go back in memory over 70 years to when I was a little girl of eight, and helped my grandmother with her washday. This was always on a Monday unless it was Christmas Day, and she would rise at

She then put the porridge on the heat from the back of the range where it had been all night to soak. Her husband and two of her sons were miners so it may be imagined the colour of the clothes they wore, and after the family had been down, had their breakfast and gone to work, she sorted the washing into piles. White sheets, pillowcases, tablecloths and shirts

Granny Chivers

My job was to mix the dolly blue bag into the second cold water bath for rinsing and then to stir the starch in a large pot as my grandmother poured in boiling water 5:00am to light the fi re under the brick-built boiler in the scullery, fi lling the tub with cold water from the outside tap (there was no tap indoors). Whilst it was heating she would make faggots from the leftover Sunday joint adding breadcrumbs, herbs and onion, and sometimes liver or kidneys if she could get them. The faggots were put on a baking tin and put in the bottom of the range cooker for the dinner later.

came fi rst whilst the water was clean. All were boiled and after lifting them out into a bath of cold water, the coloureds, towels and the rest went next as the water cooled. My job was to mix the dolly blue bag into the second cold water bath for rinsing and then to stir the starch in a large pot as my grandmother poured boiling water in it from a kettle. This was added to a last bath of cold water, after the washing was put through the mangle. I would turn the handle as she fed the washing through the wooden mangle in the back yard, then back into the bath of cold water with the starch in it, and then a fi nal mangle before being hoisted onto the clothes line across the back yard. Mary aged 9 The men wore white shirts in the evening with separate collars, and these were washed separately and starched in a little bowl. The beds were changed every Friday and the white nets were changed once a month as were the kitchen curtains. When it came to the drying, hopefully it would dry outside but if it was a wet day, the washing was dried around the fi res in the kitchen and living room. This could take several days and in the meantime the house smelled of wet washing. When dry it would be ironed on the kitchen table with two flat irons being heated on the top of the range; you had to spit on them to see how hot they were and brown paper was kept handy in case of scorching. continued on page 12

continued from page 10

A separate round iron was kept for the collars which had to be ‘polished’. My grandmother was a tiny woman at just five foot tall, and slight, and yet she hauled all the buckets of water, and the heavy wet washing, as well as making all the beds and cooking

meals for everyone. She was a Salvation Army children’s officer, made our clothes, laid out the dead, decorated the house, and was famous in the valley for the cleanliness of her home. All the brasses shone, as did the windows. I met a lady some years ago who told me there was a saying “It’s as clean as Polly Chiver’s kitchen”. She brought up six children and two foster children as well as me during the war, and after she was widowed, had a lodger. She never left the house without a hat on, even when pegging out the washing, and would not have

an indoor toilet – she thought they were unhygienic. She lived into her 90s; I don’t think she could have imagined the world today but I am sure she would have welcomed it. There were many like her, who brought us up through two world wars, without a widow’s pension or family allowance, or an automatic washing machine.

Expert family lawyers Tisshaws Family Law Solicitors in Haywards Heath welcome a new member to their team of friendly, compassionate experts

The outstanding quality of legal practice management and client care offered by local family law specialists, Tisshaws, has again been recognised by the Law Society as providing Legal Excellence (Lexcel), an award held by only 16% of English and Welsh law firms. In fact, Tissshaws is the only family law firm in Mid Sussex to be awarded this honour and director Gilva Tisshaw believes the firm’s success is down to a rare combination of legal expertise coupled with a compassionate approach. “We all understand how emotions can cloud judgement and have tremendous empathy with our clients at what is usually a very difficult time in their lives. Our personal approach allows us to fully appreciate each individual’s circumstances, so we can offer the best legal advice and resolutions for their specific situation.” It is this attitude that has seen the firm go from strength to strength and Tisshaws is delighted to welcome solicitor, Hana Khodabocus, to the practise. With five years experience in family law, Hana brings the legal team of Gilva, Craig Yeung-Williams and Lidia Farrell to four. This not only adds to the range of experience at the firm, but also ensures that calls and queries can always be dealt with.

As Tisshaws recognise the importance of personal relationships, they offer an initial appointment of up to one hour for a fixed fee of £50

As Tisshaws recognise the importance of personal relationships, they offer an initial appointment of up to one hour for a fi xed fee of £50 (including VAT). This allows for a detailed assessment of a client’s situation and gives the firm the opportunity to discuss the relevant issues for their particular circumstances. In

many cases people have started the divorce process themselves, but then realise they need professional advice. “The introductory meeting is really valuable as clients can assess whether they are happy to work with us,” explains Gilva. “It’s important that they feel comfortable and do not feel obliged to appoint us.” The reality is that most prospective clients, many of whom come from personal referrals, do appoint Tisshaws and such is their reputation, that a number of clients are now London based. “I think people are realising that the quality of service and support we offer is much higher than that of the big London firms, but our fees are much lower,” Gilva tells me. For those looking to divorce, Tisshaws offer a competitively priced fixed fee of £1,090 (includes court fee £550, costs £450 and VAT) for uncontested cases. Both Craig and Hana are Resolution members for those seeking to limit the emotional and financial impact of divorce and Gilva is a member of the Advanced Family Law Panel, specialising in complex financial cases and children issues. “This is the La st Will…”

Will Power

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Nick’s service covers Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Living Wills at competitive prices. He prefers to see clients in their own home, where their affairs can be discussed in comfort with all their paperwork to hand, or in their care home. “Many clients feel more relaxed in their own surroundings, and for people who are housebound or less mobile, or in a care home or hospital, it makes the whole process simple and unstressful”.

Nicholas Hancock, Sussex-based Solicitor, explains the importance of Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney

Every day in the UK, about 685 adults die without having made a Will. What happens to their assets and possessions? Unless you are married to your partner, or are in a civil partnership, then he or she will not inherit anything from you unless you have made a valid Will. Nick Hancock has helped thousands of people express their last wishes in their Wills over many years. “The law,” he says, “could not be clearer. The money and property of those without a Will goes only to their very nearest relatives under the ‘intestacy rules’. In many cases this does not achieve the outcome the deceased person would have wanted”. Nick also points out that death is not the only disaster that can occur. “Loss of your ability to make sensible decisions about money, property, healthcare, where you live and general welfare issues can be a real burden for the people who want to help you, unless you have made appropriate Lasting Powers of Attorney”. Inevitably, many older people find they do not have the sharp mind and critical thinking of their youth and they may eventually need trustworthy relatives, friends or professionals to act for them as their attorneys. “A Property and Financial Affairs Power of Attorney enables decisions to be made on someone’s behalf by the people of their own choice about their house, their savings and all kinds of expenditure,” says Nick. “A Health and Welfare Power of Attorney covers decisions about where you live, the medical treatment you receive, what type of care you need, and it can

(only if you wish) include power for your attorneys to withdraw life support if there is no hope of recovery. It’s sobering stuff. But we are living longer,” says Nick. “These days, a 65 year old on average is quite likely to live another 20 years or more. If there are no Lasting Powers of Attorney in place, and you become unable to make sensible decisions, your affairs would be handled by the Court of Protection which is a costly and lengthy process.” Lasting Powers of Attorney can be made without a solicitor, but as Nick points out “There is skill and experience needed in drawing up these documents. My role is to provide good advice on what can be very sensitive matters. If the Public Guardian rejects a Lasting

Power of Attorney when it is submitted for registration you may have to amend it, or start again from scratch - if it’s not too late”. Newly moved to The Forum in Burgess Hill, and with a full time secretary Kerry Olszewski,

Sussex Living supports the local Mid Sussex community. Send us all your news and events, then read about them here. New music hall Manor Field Primary School in Burgess Hill is looking to raise £10,000 to refurbish and renovate their old Victorian Hall to help nurture and celebrate the wonderful musical and artistic talents of every child at the school. To make this happen, we need your support, no matter how big or small, your donation will go a long way. Let’s put smiles on all their faces and hear our children singing in their fabulous new space that YOU helped to make happen. The old Victorian hall at Manor Field School in Burgess Hill had been empty and unused for many years. A clear up and quick coat of paint a year ago allowed the space to be useable again. However the school would like to raise some money to be able to refurbish this area properly and create a new studio where the children can play music and learn dance and drama skills. Head Teacher Ms Kit Messenger will be leaving the school at the end of this term and her vision has always been to have the old Victorian Hall refurbished and renovated to accommodate the wonderful musical and artistic talents of each and every pupil at the school. Ms Messenger has always been extremely appreciative and grateful for the many gifts she has been bought by parents and children throughout her Manor Field years. However we know, to achieve the vision she feels so strongly about, this would be the greatest gift we could all give her to show our appreciation. The first part of the concert will be given by the soloists who will sing songs and duets of their own choosing, and it will then be followed with a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass. Tickets are not required to attend the concert.

Sussex Chorus new season Sussex Chorus is looking forward to its new season, commencing with a concert at The King’s Church, Burgess Hill, RH15 9LR on Saturday, 19th November at 7.30pm when it will perform Carl Orff’s popular work Carmina Burana and the well-known local cellist Pavlos Carvalho will perform cello solos. The family Christmas concert will follow a month later, on Monday 19th December at 6.30pm, again at the King’s Church. It will include well known and less familiar seasonal songs with old favourites for audience participation. The choir’s Spring concert will be held on Saturday 18th March 2017 at 7.30pm, again at the King’s Church, when John Rutter’s Mass of the Children will be featured. The season’s last concert will take place at St Bartholomew’s Church, Brighton, BN1 4GP on Saturday 17th June 2017 at 7.30pm, with the choir performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah. New members are always assured of a warm welcome. Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings from 7.30pm

until 9.45pm at St Paul’s Catholic College, Burgess Hill, RH15 8GA starting on 12th September 2016. For further details please visit wwwsussexchorus.org.

Postal Exhibition The East Grinstead Stamp & Postcard Club is working with the Town Museum to mount a temporary exhibition illustrating the postal History of East Grinstead, using this year’s 500th anniversary of the Royal Mail as a starting point. The display panels will explain the early development of postal services, and then concentrate on events and episodes across time which have a local bearing, including an infamous mail robbery in 1801, for which the perpetrators were hanged. Illustrations to accompany the text panels will be assembled from the Museum itself, and wider sources, together with covers and related material which will illustrate postal developments. It is expected that a brochure will be produced to accompany the exhibition. The display will be open to visitors to the Museum in Cantelupe Road, East Grinstead from 7th September until the end of October, during normal Museum opening hours, Wednesday to Saturday 10.00am-4.00pm, Sundays 1.00pm-4.00pm.

New musical season This season, Haywards Heath Music Society celebrates its landmark 75th year of professional chamber music concerts in the Mid Sussex area. The opening concert will be on Saturday 24th September 2016 in St Wilfrid’s Church, Haywards Heath, when they welcome a rising star from the world of concert pianists, Kievborn Alexei Grynyuk. Alexei has been invited to give solo recitals at many prestigious venues and festivals in Europe, America and around the world. His concert will include pieces by Chopin, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov and Stravinsky.

Top-quality performances are also assured for the rest of the season. On 22nd October, the local international opera stars, husband and wife Andrew Rees and Joanne Appleby, will present a programme of popular pieces from opera and musicals on the theme of “Love”. The November 19th concert will feature “In Voice and Verse”, a trio composed of Lance Pierson (actor), Belinda Yates (soprano) and Heather Chamberlain (piano), who will mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with a programme of poetry, prose and song. The Society’s first evening of 2017, on 18th February, will consist of string quartets and sextets played by the virtuoso Ensemble Reza, whose previous appearances for the Society and elsewhere have been highly acclaimed. This is followed on 18th March by the latest performer to be selected by the Society from the illustrious Countess of Munster Award scheme, concert pianist Riyad Nicolas. This Syrian-born artist comes to us with an impressive list of international awards, prizes and notable performances. His programme will include works by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Ligeti and Ravel. For the final concert on 8th April, the Society will host an evening by two young artists rapidly becoming an established part of the UK music scene, Laura van der Heijden (cello) and Tom Poster (piano). Laura, at the age of 15, was awarded the title of BBC Young Musician 2012; she has also won many other prizes and awards and toured extensively to sell-out houses. She will be accompanied by the highlyregarded pianist Tom Poster, who is on a return visit to the Society. Their programme will include works by Schumann, Debussy, Martinu and Fauré. Further information on all these concerts is available from www. haywardsheathmusicsociety. org.uk or by telephoning the Secretary on 01444 456227. The concerts are held in St Wilfrid’s Church, except for February, when it takes place

70 Local Exhibitors Seminars & Workshops

We are 29 Scouts from across West Sussex, joining up to travel to Uganda next August, 2017. We have 23 young people aged between 15 and 21 and 6 leaders. Our main reason for this trip is to work on a community project for 10 days. We will be working at a rural primary school in Mubende, Uganda. The school caters for 200+ children and currently does not have a suitable kitchen – poles and sheet iron on top, open sides and no preparation surfaces – and one cook spends all day cooking the children’s one meal of the day from this half built shack. The school’s water bore hole is also not suitable; it is not secure and is not deep enough and so dirty contaminated water comes through, which again is the only source of ‘fresh’ water for these children and the local village. We want to build a brick structured kitchen with clean preparation surfaces and a safe cooking area as well as re-digging the bore hole so it reaches clean water and secure it to make it safe. In order to get out there and complete this project, we all need to raise £1700 each to

cover our travel fees. The project work will cost £7500+, this also needs to be fundraised by the contingent. Everyone has started their own fundraising with a lot of events going on over the next few months. However, our 1st main contingent fundraiser for the project work is in September; CYCLE to UGANDA. If you would like to support or sponsor us, we would be eternally grateful. Weir Wood talk

We run a volunteer ‘Walk in Help Desk’ at the Spire Café, St Johns Church, Burgess Hill every Thursday between 11am and 1.00pm. No Charge.

Can you please help? The Lindfield Bonfire Society is a small private Limited Company, with an annual turnover of £20,000. The Society has only two objectives, firstly to organise and operate the 5th November festivities and secondly to donate its surplus from any one year to local

Children’s Charities. We are looking for a professional person, Chartered, Certified of AAT, who would be prepared to act in a voluntary capacity, to make up the Society’s Annual Accounts from incomplete records and produce the necessary abbreviated accounts required for filing under the Company’s Act. The Society has a Treasurer and a full Committee so there would be no requirement to attend committee meetings, other than the AGM, held in April.

Looking for a different topic for your club or society meeting? How about the management of a nature reserve? The Friends of Weir Wood Society was formed 20 years ago to help manage and develop this nature reserve. Peter Erridge has prepared a PowerPoint presentation on the ‘History, development and management of Weir Wood Local Nature Reserve.’ The talk takes about an hour and can be extended. It includes many pictures of plants and animals photographed on the Reserve. Inclusion of more information about a wider range of the plants and animals found on the site allows the talk to be extended if necessary. Afternoon or evening talks possible. An agreed fee will be donated to the Friends. Any groups wishing to hear this talk should contact Peter via perridge4@gmail.com

A staple in Burgess Hill since the 1960s, Early & Edmonds Opticians is your independent answer to all your eye care needs. The practice enjoys a loyal and long-standing customer base, and it is clear to see why; Chris Bird, owner for the past 16 years, knows every customer by name and prescription, and makes the time to stop and chat, checking the fit of new glasses and making sure they are 100% happy with their care. Conveniently situated just up from the train station, Early & Edmonds is a welcoming practice, and is very proud to have some of the latest in eye screening technology. carried out by one of the fully qualified opticians at Early & Edmonds. Chris showed me the machine in action and the amount of information it can provide is absolutely astonishing – the photograph can be viewed as a 3-D cube where all the layers of the eye are differentiated by colour and texture; an optical crosssection allows the technician to see deep into the eye, right to the optical nerve; and numerous graphs and tables display the results. This technology provides the earliest possible detection of glaucoma and can also diagnose other conditions such as vitreous detachments and macular degeneration. The earlier these conditions are picked up the better in terms of treatment, and as the test only costs £25 it is an investment worth making. Not only do they boast the latest in technology, Early & Edmonds are also high in the style stakes. They are now the main Ray Ban stockist in the area, holding over 45

Discovering

CSI SUSSEX

CSI’s are enjoying a moment in the spotlight with TV dramas and excitement surrounding this fascinating career. Robert Veitch discovers what the job actually entails from CSI Tony Gregory Haywards Heath Police Station is tucked away on the route of the old A272, close to the centre of town. One branch of police work that has become more widely known in recent years thanks to television exposure, is the forensic work of the CSI – Crime Scene Investigator. The amiable Tony Gregory (right) greeted me with a firm handshake and generous smile. Tony has been with the police since 1999, although he has never been a police officer. Tony served in the British Army for 15 years, including active service in Kuwait during the first Gulf War. After that, he worked for two years in the travel industry before taking a psychometric test. The result revealed analytical work would be a good fit for his character and attributes. Just a week later Tony saw an advert in a local paper, recruiting for Sussex Police and urged on by his wife, he applied. “The rest is history,” he said with a chortle. After two years “prepping files ready for Court” in contested trials (where a not guilty plea is entered), Tony transferred to CSI. When he transferred, the role was widely known as SOCO (Scene Of Crime Officer) but the title has changed to reflect the heightened enthusiasm of the public – back in 2001 there were 45 applicants for 16 positions. Tony told me recruitment has changed because of television; “there are so many people interested in this kind of role” due to it’s glamorous presence in the media. Nowadays there can be up to 200 applicants for a single position and consequently the entry criteria has gone up; A levels are a must, a degree is

preferable. However other skills such as teamwork, leadership and public service mean that applicants also need real world experience to back up academia. Transferable skills from the real world are also extremely useful. The CSI team are not first responders at incidents, that is the role of the police. The CSI department follow the police, searching for evidence at the crime scene. Tony’s first job as a CSI was harvesting DNA data from car crimes to populate a national database. Work done years ago can still help with convictions many years later, particularly with cold cases. “It’s a fascinating career,” remarked Tony, “the enthusiasm of a nosey parker, coupled with the ability to continued on page 24

process information logically is essential to a CSI.” Most of the forensic work involves shoplifting, burglary, car crime, drugs, armed robbery, arson, rape and murder. The basics of the job remain the same as they’ve always been, but changes have come from improved technology. Fingerprinting arrived in the 1890s and is still in regular use today, although “custody fi ngerprinting is more like using a

photocopier.” Fifty years ago a drop of blood might yield the blood group, these days it provides an individual’s genetic fi ngerprint. Advances have also been made with photography. The 32 frame wet fi lm cameras of the past have been replaced by the digital era. “Nowadays we might take two or three times as many pictures as before,” said Tony. “There’s even a special lens that takes a complete 360˚ panorama.” The speed of the information flow has also changed; reports are no longer handwritten, but computer based and instantly accessible across the police force. “There isn’t a typical day,” said Tony. “Book on, see what jobs have been passed on, then prioritise and organise the jobs depending on the weather, people available and so on.” Normally 2-3 crime scenes are investigated in a standard 8-9 hour shift. Shift patterns are on a rolling roster of six days on and three days off, with hours ranging from 08:00continued on page 26

The Haywards Heath station covers a large area: East Grinstead, Billingshurst, Pulborough, Amberley, Burgess Hill, Crawley, Horsham, Steyning, Henfield and Storrington. However, CSI staff can be called anywhere in Sussex or Surrey if circumstances demand it. With a great deal of pride Tony continued, “I really enjoy the role, it’s defi nitely a good job if you like meeting people, can plan your own day, and show responsibility. There are different situations every day, or the same scenarios in different settings. Every day is different, mainly due to the people you meet.” Tony was one of eight CSI’s involved at the Shoreham Air Crash in August 2015, spending a week on site with a mobile office. He explained, “There can be emotional tolls with forensic work so applicants need to be prepared to be able to cope with unpleasant experiences. We talk

Join Our Club! Is your child looking for a new and exciting challenge? Turn to an after school or breakfast club and discover a whole range of fun activities

A lot has changed in the provision of after school care in the last ten years in the UK. From what was once an extended child-minding service in a one-room setting, there has since burgeoned a whole industry dedicated to providing children with the best offerings in the fields of sport, arts, craft, music and much more. It all started back in 2006 with the introduction of the then Government’s ‘extended schools agenda’, with millions of pounds worth of funding pumped into the scheme since its inception. ‘Out of school clubs’ as they are officially called, form part of the initiative and include after school and breakfast clubs, as well as holiday clubs and play-schemes. They were originally set up to help parents and carers balance work and family commitments, whilst simultaneously offering children access to a broader range of interests, experiences and opportunities comparable to those offered to pupils in the private sector. If the demand is there, all

From seasonal favourites to more sophisticated offerings such as volleyball, water polo or street-dance – enrichment is the order of the day state schools are expected to offer access to wraparound childcare either within their own premises or at a nearby setting between 8am and 6pm during the school week. Whether this is provided by school staff themselves or outsourced to external agencies varies from school to school. Local authorities throughout the UK have also

played an important role in the implementation of the scheme over ten years, ensuring they adhere to targets set and that the agenda is aligned with their wider policies for children, families and the community overall. So what’s actually on offer to children in Sussex in 2016? After school clubs are where it’s at in terms of the sheer wealth of activities on offer, although there’s a new trend for breakfast clubs that offer a specific sporting or art element alongside the usual toast and cornflakes. From seasonal favourites like football, rugby, tennis and cricket to more sophisticated offerings such as volleyball, water polo or streetdance – enrichment is the order of the day. For something more cerebral, after school chess clubs are currently very popular in schools across Sussex, as are board games, Lego building, ICT skills and computer coding clubs. Languages still get a look in as French and Spanish continue to be offered in abundance, as well as arts and crafts, sewing, drama and dance. All this points to a cultural shift too in parental attitudes towards activities for their kids. Occasions such as the Olympics in 2012 and Britain’s success at global sporting events have inspired parents to help their children try new things with the continued on page 30

hope they will find something they like and stick to. Unsurprisingly, the gains for children regularly undertaking these kinds of clubs are manifold. Research has consistently shown that children who use extra curricular clubs at school experience many benefits, which also extend to their academic work, and this is magnified further for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. A survey by Ofsted found that schools offering out of hours clubs and which opened late had a very positive impact on children’s attitudes to school and in turn their self-confidence, behavioural and social skills. As Sarah a Mid Sussex primary school teacher explains, “In my experience, after school clubs and out of hours activities generally foster very positive attitudes in a school, as they build a real sense of community and pride within an educational setting, as well as raising aspirations. There’s a greater sense of ownership over their education which when you are a child can be a really good thing.”

It’s important for pupils to experience independence in a safe environment and learn that parents have to work – it’s part of life! More parental involvement too in the form of mums and dads hosting and attending clubs helps engender the notion of a community hub even further still. And for the many parents who work, the clubs provide a much needed extra hour or more, especially for care that extends to 6pm. “Although it can be a long day for some children,” says Sarah, “they quickly become accustomed to this, if it’s a regular part of their routine. It’s important for pupils to experience independence in a safe environment and learn that parents have to work – it’s part of life!” For more information on up to date after school clubs and offerings, check your school’s website regularly and look out for Parentmail communications at the beginning of each term.

ENTERTAINMENT

BY SARA WHATLEY

Hurst Festival 2016 Now in its twelfth year, the Hurst Festival is back from the 17th September to the 1st October. Celebrate and enjoy these two wonderful weeks of entertainment and diverse cultural events Come September and the whole village of Hurstpierpoint comes to life with the vibrancy of Hurst Festival. One of the most exciting events in the village calendar, this festival incorporates a huge array of entertainment, from music and dance, family and community events, arts and crafts, literature and fi lm, theatre and comedy, and walks, talks and tours. Every year the festival starts with a special day where all the village comes together to celebrate the start of this action packed fortnight. This year is no exception, with the festivities announced at 11am on Saturday 17th September by a peal of bells from Holy Trinity Church. In keeping with this year’s Olympic theme, this celebration day is called Super Saturday, and will have a samba band fi lling the air with Rio inspired music. On the Recreation ground there is much for all the family, such as the hysterical game of Human Table

Football. Many of the High Street traders will also have special events in their shops, so make sure you pop in to join in the fun. Have you been busy growing in your garden this year? If you have a prized specimen to show, then make sure you enter the Hurstpierpoint Autumn Show. Abounding with the rich colours and smells of harvest, the Village Centre will be transformed on Saturday 24th September with the fruits of harvest’s labour. From stunning flower arrangements to whopper vegetables, this will be a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon. It is free to enter and open to all, just visit Gibsons in Hurst High Street for an entry form or email greenhpp@tiscali. co.uk Running throughout the festival is the Reflections Art Exhibition at the Holy Trinity Church in Hurstpierpoint. This exhibition is a unique fusion of painted antique glass, poetry, photography, sculpture and artwork, all culminating to reflect on the Centenary Year of the Battle of the Somme. Responses of the exhibition are welcome, and will be collected in an anthology for the artists of the Hurstpierpoint community. If you need a good giggle, pay a visit to the Village Centre Foyer

The Village Centre will be transformed on Saturday 24th September with the fruits of harvest’s labour during the festival where you will fi nd some amusing and possibly cringe inducing fashions of the past. We all have a somewhat miscalculated outfit hidden in the back of the wardrobe, and now you can laugh about them together at this exhibition by the Hurstpierpoint Museum and Heritage Group. There is so much more on offer as well, from Knit & Natter groups, to a Come and Try it Bike Ride, Poetry Please workshop and a Sheepdog Demonstration. You can fi nd the eye-catching Hurst Festival 2016 programme free all over Hurstpierpoint, and tickets can be booked in person from The Players Theatre, 147 High Street, Hurstpierpoint, Thurs-Sat mornings, or you can book online at www.hurstfestival.org www.sussexliving.com

A relative newcomer to Sussex, it was a newspaper photograph of a particular house that inspired Katie, husband John and daughters Natasha and Eleanor, to make the move from London. “We’d been thinking about moving within London, but were gob smacked at how insane property prices were and then John came home with a picture of a house in a newspaper, but it was in Sussex,” says Katie. To cut a long story short, after visiting the house, it was love at first sight and eight years ago, the family made Broadcaster, journalist, dancer, conductor, musician, jam maker, wife, mother, Katie Derham is a Renaissance woman of many talents, whose success has been built on the advice of her no nonsense Yorkshire mother – work hard, be kind, be polite and be easy to get along with. And indeed she is. Any apprehension of meeting one so accomplished instantly evaporates on meeting Katie, who is smart, funny, interesting and interested, making it easy to understand her success.

It’s important to try lots of different things to find what you love, because when you do, it won’t even feel like work the move to Mid Sussex. “We’ve never regretted it for a minute and love it down here.” Growing up in Cheshire, Katie’s dad was a keen gardener, making his own home brew, chutneys and jams and with her new Sussex home having a

garden full of fruit trees, she was determined not to let it rot and set to making jam. “I love the fact we’re in the country here. I want to do all that stuff like jam making and genuinely enjoy it,” she explains. Although Katie does confess to a freezer full of fruit waiting to be preserved from last autumn, when she joined Strictly and jam making took a back seat to dancing. Katie was first approached about appearing on Strictly in 2004. At the time she was a full time working mum at ITN, up to her eyes in small children and work, a combination which was not compatible with the demands of the show. “To be honest, I thought that ship had sailed,” she tells me. “Then last Easter out of the blue, I had an email asking me again. The timing was good, the girls were at an age where they would appreciate it and I thought, why not?” One of the most difficult things was keeping it a secret, made doubly difficult as it was impossible to commit to either any long term plans or work, as Katie didn’t know whether her time on the show would be two weeks or

two months. The level of secrecy before the official launch involved everything from codenames (last year these were Disney characters – Katie was Belle), to genuinely not knowing who your dance partner would be until the live launch show. “The first time we all met our fellow contestants and the professionals was at a secret location in London. The whole thing is like speed dating, slash, arranged marriage, as the producers and choreographers are watching to see who looks good together and who gets on. Then you’ve got the pros all circulating trying to find out where you live and how much time you have to rehearse, as they all want to do well on the show. The choreography for the first group dance sees everyone dance with at least four of the professionals and even up to just hours before the launch, the bosses are still changing their minds and so it really ramps up the element of surprise and excitement.” More than happy to be partnered with Anton, Katie confides they had a hoot making the show. Depending on work

schedules, training often took place in Haywards Heath, at either the Dolphin Leisure Centre or The Hub at Central Sussex College, or in a Crawley gym. “Although I’ve always loved watching dance, I had no relevant experience and you soon realise that to learn a whole routine and perform it well within a week, is a massive task. In fact, Strictly was a really good life lesson of what you can do with the fear of God and brilliant one-to-one tuition from an expert for six hours a day. It all feels a bit like a distant dream now, I look back and think, God, did I actually do that?” Having taken Anton to his first Strictly final, Katie had a chance to learn all of the dances, bar one: the samba. With a love of Latin music and a father born in Brazil, the chance to dance a samba was high on the list of Katie’s wishes, although clearly not Anton’s. “He looked at me as if I was insane when I said I was looking forward to doing the samba and said no good could come of that – the samba is one of the hardest dances and if you continued on page 40

and me tried it we’d look like we were having a mid-life crisis on air,” she laughs. As it turned out the couple never had to dance the samba and it was the tangos and ballroom dances that became Katie’s favourites. “I think it was inevitable,” she says. “Because Anton is so good at those dances, he teaches them really well and it rubbed off on me. The whole show was a wonderful experience and I

was delighted, although surprised, that we made it to the final.” As a fitting memento to her time on the programme, Katie decided to buy three of her dresses ( Jive, American Smooth and Rumba) both as souvenirs and for her girls, who are both keen dancers themselves. Having said that, the end of the show wasn’t quite the last dance, as Katie presented and danced for the Strictly Come Dancing theme night, during the BBC Proms 2016, this time dancing with Aljaz Skorjanec, “not exactly a hardship,” she grins. A talented violinist and classical music enthusiast, Katie has been the BBC’s chief presenter of the Proms since 2010, a job she describes as “a complete dream.” In fact, with over 20 years in the media, Katie has managed to steer her career to reflect her musical interests, having presented the Classical Brit Awards, the Hall of Fame Concert on Classic FM and Radio 3’s, Afternoon on 3 and

After graduating from Cambridge with a degree in Economics she moved to London, working in a series of dead end jobs to pay the rent, including one which involved cleaning the apartment for her fellow flat mates. It was 1991, there was a recession and a shortage of jobs, but Katie continued to apply until eventually landing a secretarial job at the BBC, which led to her first break as a researcher on Radio 4’s Money Box. This in turn led to a job as a presenter on Radio Five Live’s Moneycheck, which then paved the way for a move from the airwaves to the screen, as Katie’s next job was as a reporter for Barry Norman on Film 96 and 97. In 1998, she joined ITN as Media and Arts Editor for ITN News and at the age of 27 became the youngest newscaster on British national television, a job she held

for 12 years. During 2008, Katie learned to conduct orchestral, choral and operatic music for the BBC Two talent show, Maestro, before returning to the BBC full time in 2010, as the face of the Proms and a presenter on Radio 3. At face value Katie appears to have enjoyed a somewhat charmed and meteoric rise to professional success, but having met her it is clear this has been built on a strong work ethic, intelligent considered opinions and an engaging charm. So, what advice would she give to young people starting out today? “I think kids today are under an enormous amount of pressure to get straight A’s and A*s and anything less than that is failure. That’s insane and worries me greatly. I say to my girls what my mum said to me, it’s about working hard, being polite, being kind and building confidence. If you’re nice and easy to work with, that’s how you build a good reputation and then people want to work with you.” Katie also believes that knock backs have to be taken in your stride. “You have to try hard not to worry about rejection and appreciate that failure is a normal

part of life. But what’s important is that you never think I can’t do something, or you’re bad at something, just because you didn’t get a perfect grade. There’s no one route to success and I tell my girls that it’s important to try lots of different things to find what you love, because when you do, it won’t even feel like work.” Katie admits to having the benefit of some excellent professional role models including Anna Ford, Jane Garvey and Kirsty Wark, explaining how important it is to rise above media accusations of the ‘autocutie’ variety. “I’ve always wanted to do a good job, set a good example for my girls and earn my jobs on merit, not contacts or anything more superficial,” she tells me. Having worked hard to build such a satisfying career, Katie is now enjoying the fruits of her labour. “As my mum said, work hard now and make your choices later and I now have a very happy work routine, with a great balance between radio and TV work and my home life,” she explains. Since moving to Mid Sussex the family have become part of the local community and Katie

The eventual winners will play at the last night of the Proms in the Park. When we meet, Katie is fresh from fi lming the final performances of the first challenge and the first orchestra leaving. “The whole amateur music scene is amazing and the quality of the people is incredible. But it was awful when the final verdict was delivered, I had a complete Strictly flashback and knew exactly how they were feeling.” As President of the Burgess Hill Symphony Orchestra, Katie still enjoys making music. “I was a real extra curricular kid and always did lots of music and orchestra and loved it. Mum always made sure we practised and it trained me to be disciplined. I’m a great fan of group music making, as I always had such a laugh.” While Katie’s mum sadly passed away thirteen years ago, it is clear that her spirit lives on in her daughter and through Katie, her grandchildren - work hard, be kind, be polite and be easy to get on with and while your path to success may not be paved with gold, it will be considerably easier and more enjoyable.

STITCH IN TIME...

…SEQUINS

Sparkle like an 80s diva in the modern take on sequins – think smart shirts and sophisticated dresses rather than over-blown gaud and glam Words like ‘big’ and ‘over-thetop’ are what come to mind when we think about the 80s. Still known for its love of everything bright and vivid – loud colours, curly, bouffant and heavily styled hair and bright, heavy make-up are all things we immediately associate with this notorious fashion decade. Now another major staple of the era, the sequin, has re-emerged to brighten up the cool and dreary months ahead! In the 80s sequins would bedazzle any good party dress. Shoulder padded or puff y sleeved pieces would not be complete without sequins in electric blue, green, purple or pink to really get the party going. Not just a prom fad, these

dresses were worn by all ages – just think back to TV shows like Dynasty to get the perfect image of what an 80s woman would wear on a night out! Looking back on the era, the sequin-studded evening wear coupled with gaudy and oversized jewellery may not be a look you wish to recreate, but this season’s emphasis on haberdashery is a great trend to get involved in. However, modern cocktail dresses adorned with sparkles, short shift dresses or black fitted flare dresses are adding a sophisticated spin to the loud 80s trend. Also long sleeved sequin shirts with 80s vibes are the perfect daytime garments to add some glitz to any casual outfit. www.sussexliving.com

My first impression upon walking into The Manor Clinic, which is like a beautiful boutique hotel set in a stunning Georgian building, was what a healing and caring environment I was in. I was greeted by manager Jane Willett, who has worked at the clinic since it opened over 9 years ago. You could tell Jane is very proud of the clinic and the team, many of whom have been there since the beginning and have invested a lot of themselves into making it not only a treatment centre of excellence, but creating the ‘Manor family’, as they fondly call themselves. I was welcomed by the friendly team, all of whom had the ability to instantly put you at ease and make you feel safe. This is an important factor for most people walking through the doors of the clinic, as they will no doubt be feeling very nervous; this is the first step to confronting their addiction and starting the recovery process. A small 15 bedded facility, The Manor Clinic only specialises in the treatment of addictions and differs from most facilities that are normally found within large hospital environments. Whilst maintaining a warm ambience, talking to the team made me realise the real importance of why people come here and the seriousness of helping someone whose life has reached a critical point. Many of the team understand this very well as they have been through

The Manor

Clinic

The Manor Clinic is a private addiction rehabilitation centre surrounded by a large walled garden, set in the middle of the Hampshire countryside, promoting peace, healing and care in a homely, safe environment treatment themselves, then gone on to train as therapists. Jane told me their knowledge and experience is invaluable, as they are able to relate to the real problems people face not only whilst going through the initial detox period, but when they leave to pick up the aftermath that their addiction has left behind. What makes The Manor Clinic unique is their ‘lifetime’ aftercare

service offered to anyone who completes the 28 day detox programme. This weekly service is attended by people from all over the country, and overseas, plus there is family group therapy every other Saturday. An ‘intervention’ service is also available for those who are worried about a loved one in denial, to help them confront their problems and see the importance of getting treatment. There is also a 24

hour helpline, which is a real lifeline for people when they leave the clinic. To most visitors The Manor Clinic has become a second home and family offering support with whatever challenge they are facing; some return every week, some every month, and some go for longer periods. Most use it extensively for the first year, then as they get stronger their frequency lessens, but all those in recovery know they can use it as much or as little as they need. Addictions can have such a negative impact on all aspects of a person’s life, so if you are ready to take back control and change your life forever then give The Manor Clinic a call. Some of their patients have said it literally saved their lives, which is a very powerful statement and one that really stayed with me.

HE ALTH BE AUT Y ST YLE

BY AMY NE WSON

September is a tricky month to dress for, with the summer weather still in the air but a definite drop in temperature hinting towards the arrival of autumn. This can mean either glorious sunshine or chilly days. In situations like these the best solution is to layer up. The perfect piece for covering up this autumn is the cape – a light jacket or cardigan-like garment – it’s effortlessly cool for all, any and every situation and is the new season’s biggest outerwear trend. Now a favourite amongst the fashion savvy, the cape can do wonders for the simplest of wardrobes and transform the most casual look into an impressive high-fashion outfit in seconds. If you’re not sure where to start, capes of every kind can be found – there is one out there to suit everyone’s fashion style and designers have made sure to present a huge array of looks

The perfect cover up for cool September evenings, don a cape and discover your superwoman powers with a variety of styles and designs – statement dressing at its best

to pick from this autumn. If you want something ‘barely there’, a capelet is a great choice – they are not only adorable but will keep you warm when it’s a bit chilly out. These small, sophisticated garments just need to be popped on over your outfit and you’re ready to go – they can be worn over long or short sleeves, over tops and dresses and even look great over bodysuits! If you’re looking for something that will guarantee a second glance, statement capes make more of an impression and there are plenty of them to pick from as cape designs are becoming more and more experimental. Bright embroideries on translucent material and floor length designs in glamorous shimmery glory are just the tip of the iceberg! Length is also something to consider, as capes can be hard to style. If you opt for a cropped cape – these usually swing just above the hip – pair it with short-length skirts. While the longer the

As for shoes, anything goes: you can wear a pair of flatform sandals or even knee-high boots – depending on the weather of course. A cape is not only the perfect way to fi nish off your look, but also to transform it. HEALTH & FITNESS

All in the Mind Body Buzz Take a few minutes in your busy day

for a moment of zen calm and quiet as you meditate your way to better health September is the ideal month to make a fresh start when it comes to your health. Who can resist that ‘back to school’ feeling and the thrill of something new? With renewed energy (hopefully!) gained from the summer break, now is the time to make small tweaks to your old regime so you start off the autumn healthily. Whether it’s the eternally noble cause of aiming to eat more fruit and vegetables daily or just walking more, then making small changes over the long run can have tangible and lasting effects. All too often however, we think of our bodies and not our minds. So what of our mental health? Science shows that regular exercise is a real boon for our mood, helping to ward

off the ‘blues’ through the release of endorphins, but what about going one step further and actively cultivating a quieter and happier mind through meditation or mindfulness? There are so many different types of meditation and mindfulness approaches available, it can be hard to understand which one can work for us and what they can contribute to our lives. There’s much debate out there as to how they all differ and more importantly which one works best. From breath work and mantra techniques to walking and

yoga meditation – the categories can be baffl ing to say the least. So where do you start? First it’s important to understand the fundamental differences between mindfulness techniques and other meditation. Very simply they can be broken down into two categories – ‘focused attention meditation’ and ‘open monitoring meditation’ – based on how scientists have classified the way techniques focus attention in the mind. Focused attention meditation is where you focus your mind on a single object, be it your breath, a mantra, or an item, for the whole meditation and use it as a tool to quell any distractions and therefore quieten the mind. With open monitoring (mindfulness falls into this category) instead of fi xing your attention on any one thing, you keep it open and ‘monitor’ all aspects of your experience and thoughts without judgement or attachment, letting them come and go with the aim that a more peaceful state of mind is reached. Different things work best for every individual and it’s almost impossible to really drill down and differentiate between every approach because there are inevitably overlaps. The overall consensus however (and research has consistently proved this) is that mediation and mindfulness can be very beneficial in tackling stress, anxiety and depression and can contribute towards improved cognitive function, sleep quality and mood, to name a few. Start by talking to friends and fi nd out what has worked for them and look out for any local classes you can attend to get a taste of what’s out there. From experience, the key is to be consistent in your practice – although the benefits can be felt immediately, regular everyday practice can really make a difference in the long run.

Mediation and mindfulness can be very beneficial in tackling stress, anxiety and depression

CAUTION: If you are unsure of any new exercise regime please consult your GP before commencing.

Paul Cassidy BDS, DPDS Implant Surgeon

Andrew says, “ Dental implants have been a saviour for those patients with uncomfortable dentures and others that have lost teeth and are unable to chew properly. Modern materials are far more natural looking and numbing techniques virtually pain free. Paul has been a valuable addition both to the team here at Oakmead and also to the local community. Patients no longer have to travel to implant clinics further afield because we also accept referrals from other local surgeries. His surgical expertise at Oakmead has also meant patients don’t have to join long waiting lists for wisdom tooth removal and other surgical procedures.” Paul qualified from Queen’s University Belfast, and completed Postgraduate training in Oral Surgery and Sedation at The University of Bristol. He has worked in practices specializing in Implantology and Oral Surgery for 15 years, and has received training from leaders in Dental Implantology and bone-grafting. Implant treatments offered by Paul range from the replacement of a single missing tooth right through to fixed alternatives for denture wearers. On a more personal level, he is a keen musician and has played guitar in a number of bands, although it appears his music career is destined to remain purely

Housed in The South Downs Heritage Centre in Hassocks, you will discover a contemporary and innovative art space. Welcome to The Cube Gallery The South Downs Heritage Centre is the perfect environment for the innovative, contemporary Cube Gallery, which showcases the vibrant acrylic and resin paintings by Martin Nee alongside several other carefully chosen artists. Martin and his wife Di wanted to create a gallery that was relaxed and informal without the pressure and prices that people have

come to associate with high quality art galleries. Although Martin was born in Sussex, his family have lived in Fife for generations and it was here, surrounded by volcanic rock formations and wild, open spaces that his unique style was forged. After working in advertising for most of his career, he found his creativity returning to the hues and textures of his childhood. He began to

The Cube Gallery is a wonderfully light space which benefits from its out of town location use acrylic paints and resin to make exciting, swirling abstracts, dancing with colour and energy that suggest physical and emotional landscapes in a constant state of flux. The Cube Gallery is a wonderfully light space which benefits from its out of town location, easy parking and its enviable position, nestled within the bustling Heritage Centre with its numerous facilities and café. Above The Cube is a 1,500 square foot mezzanine housing the Edwin Budding Gallery where Martin and Di curate themed art exhibitions; I visited the latest, featuring realist wildlife painting, print and drawing. The exhibition proved exceptionally popular with visitors and next year, ‘Cube View’ will exhibit landscapes and ‘Cube Greenhouse’ will concentrate on botanical art. Artists interested in applying to be considered for these exhibitions can email Martin with examples of their work. Martin is a passionate believer in promoting the work of talented local artists, four of which have an opportunity to exhibit in The Cube for eight weeks at a time. My visit coincided with the display of work by a blacksmith, a sculptor, a

ceramicist and an artist. Such eclectic work is usually the preserve of town galleries and it is refreshing to see innovative art released from its urban confines. Martin’s own creative vision is mesmerising; his technique allows his work to be guided by the movement of the paint in the same way that Nature forges landscape by a combination of time, heat and energy. His childhood holidays immersed in the vivid landscape of Fife made a bold impression on his young mind which, decades later, has been translated into his skilful and soulful paintings. Martin and Di’s mission was to make quality, original art available for every home and the two galleries offer a wealth of local talent at sensible prices in a fabulous, inspiring setting.

In part 1 of our heating feature, we take a look at the more traditional methods of keeping your home warm and cosy during the winter months, from central to underfloor heating

Feeling the

HEAT

On a cold winter’s day there’s nothing as lovely as coming back to a warm and cosy home. Yet with the high and fluctuating cost of gas, oil and electricity, it’s important that we heat our homes in the most efficient and energy saving way possible. To help you achieve this, we’ve put together a two part series on staying warm and snug this winter. This month we look at traditional types of heating based on non-renewable energy, such as gas and oil and next month, we’ll explore ways to reduce our carbon footprint and energy bills by heating our homes using renewable forms of energy, such as wood and solar power.

CENTRAL HEATING

One of the most efficient and cost effective ways to heat your home is gas fi red central heating. However, around 4 million homes in the UK are not connected to the gas grid and have to rely on other forms of fuel, such as oil and liquid petroleum gas (LPG), which have to be delivered by

The range of radiators now available means your heat source can double up as anything from a sculptural work of art to a longline mirror

road and stored in a tank. To ensure your household never runs out, there are now systems that monitor the amount of fuel left in your tank and automatically contact your supplier when more is required. Regardless of the type of fuel that fi res your boiler, the choice of a standard or combi boiler will depend on your lifestyle and how much hot water your household uses. A standard boiler heats water which is stored in a hot water tank to be used when needed, while a combi boiler doesn’t require a tank but heats up water instantly whenever the hot tap is turned on. Depending on your personal taste, the range of radiators now available in terms of styling, colour and size, means your heat source can double up as anything from a sculptural work of art, a nostalgic reminder of your school days, to a longline mirror. Even if you’re stuck with conventional radiators, there are now a whole range of covers available to help them blend in with and reflect your home decor. A good tip to save both energy and money, is to fit individual thermostatic radiator valves, as this allows you to control and lower the temperature in rooms which are not used during the coldest months. ELECTRIC HEATING

Electric heaters are one of the most expensive forms of heating, but using night storage heaters which run on a cheaper night time rate of electricity (Economy 7) can lessen the cost. These work by using heat retaining bricks which are warmed during the night and gradually release heat throughout the day. Stylistically,

night storage heaters are much thinner and more streamlined than in the past and today many look like conventional wall mounted radiators. However, if your only choice is to use portable electric radiators, try to ensure the room is as insulated as possible to improve their efficiency. UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Underf loor heating can distribute heat more evenly throughout a room than conventional radiators, which tend to heat isolated areas and is a modern, high spec addition to any property. It reduces the need for radiators and is a pleasure to walk across. If you’re considering it for your home, while it’s a f lexible option for an extension or new room, fitting it retrospectively can be expensive and disruptive. In fact, not only can it be expensive to install, but also to maintain and run and be aware that smaller systems may still need supplementing with radiators to keep you warm in the depths of winter.

There are two main types of underfloor heating; electric or water based systems. Electric underfloor heating is often supplied as a ready to roll electrical mat and is relatively straightforward to fit retrospectively, but once fitted is expensive to run. Owing to the running costs, electric underfloor heating is not recommended for large rooms. Water underfloor heating systems are more complicated and expensive to install, because they involve laying pipes which connect to the boiler. If the room you want to install it in is not close to the main heating system the cost and disruption will increase, making it a more suitable option for new build properties. However, once fitted it is less expensive to run than an electric system. HEAT STORAGE STOVES

Heat storage stoves, such as the Aga and Rayburn, add both warmth and character to your home, making the need for an extra radiator in the kitchen redundant. They run

on energy which is low intensity but continuous, which heats up the heavy cast iron framework until it is hot enough for cooking. Originally designed to run on coal, newer models are more adaptable and can run on gas,

electricity, diesel or wood. New technology also means that some models are now programmable allowing them to be turned on and off, giving you more control and flexibility over heat production.

Get hands-on enjoyment with forging something old into something new. Allan Course is a backyard blacksmith, and encourages everyone to have a go

Backyard Blacksmith I’ve written before of Allan Course’s skill at flint knapping and sculpture but I recently discovered that he’s also a keen blacksmith who champions the use of the small, backyard forge. Allan set up the forge before me in his rear garden; first the compact but heavy anvil he purchased second-hand for just £90, next the double action farrier’s bellows followed by a pot of charcoal and a bucket of cold water. He uses this portable set up for shows and demonstrations and wants people to realise that most blacksmithing involves neither specialist knowledge nor skills but more the confidence to have a go and keep experimenting. Wood shavings are placed in the pot and set alight before kindling is added. Once this is really hot charcoal is added gradually. The bellows are placed through a hole in the pot so that air can be passed through the charcoal once it is hot. It takes just 15 minutes from lighting the fire to begin heating the metal. Once the metal is placed in the heat, it is left until red hot when it can be worked on the anvil. Allan showed me a copy of a Roman knife he’d made from a discarded metal file; the original sits in the Museum of London and was probably a kitchen knife used for skinning or jointing meat. He used no cutting in the knife’s making, only forging, and the subtle lines in the blade tell of its past life as a file. Allan reckons it took him about fifteen

60

S u ss e x L i v i n g September 2016

heatings to make this knife, amounting to an hour or so in total. The temperature the metal is heated to is critical: if it is too low you can’t work it but if it is too high, the metal will burn, just like a sparkler! The skill is to manage the forge and heat the metal till it becomes red-hot, then take it out and hammer it to shape on the anvil. He told me that blacksmithing is a good learning process as it’s easy to rectify mistakes and achieve a useable product. Having first tried smithing at a friend’s forge in Wiltshire twelve years ago, Allan set up his own forge nine years later. “It’s a nice skill to demonstrate,” he told me, adding that hammering metal “sounds like a bell and attracts interest, so it has a showman appeal as well.” It’s an inexpensive hobby that can utilise ordinary hammers and a pair of single action fireplace bellows; Allan uses charcoal from sustainable UK sources and second-hand tools he picks up at sales or flea markets. Transforming worn out metal tools into useable new ones is an extremely rewarding process of upcycling and Allan finds that people love to have a go after watching him demonstrate. Setting up a backyard forge is an achievable activity and a great way to turn old into new by an ancient, enjoyable process. You can find Allan selling his crafts and doing demos at Autumn Wood and Country fairs around Sussex and Kent this month for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Rooting in Stumperies are making a comeback. Enhance your landscape with this unique Victorian feature and make your garden the proverbial talk of the town Whether it be interior design or the catwalks of Milan, trends and fashions come and go. The world of horticulture is no exception to such fickleness. Plants and ornaments that were once the latest thing are now consigned to compost heaps and car boot sales, but the ‘stumpery’ is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Simply put, a stumpery can be defi ned as a garden feature that uses tree roots, stumps and logs, often combined with rocks and stones, to imitate the natural landscape. They don’t have to be on a grand scale, stumperies can be of any size. Their purpose is to create a ‘world within a world’; much in the same way as a collection of bonsai specimens conjures up the sense of a forest, yet can be fitted onto a table top. The idea of the stumpery is an old one. The Gardeners Chronicle magazine published an article on them as far back as 1856. Some of these stumperies were vast; incorporating rockery elements with gothic follies and water features - no stately home was complete without one. A stumpery also provided the perfect growing conditions for that other Victorian craze; Pteridomania, (that’s fern collecting to you and me). Stumperies dating from the 19th century still exist and their appeal

endures; an old-fashioned idea that fits perfectly with our modern attitudes to wildlife conservation and naturalistic planting schemes. Of course, the concept of a garden feature that utilises decaying timber and old tree roots wedged upside down doesn’t appeal to everyone. When the Prince of Wales took delivery of 150 root balls to make the Highgrove

stumpery, The Duke of Edinburgh was reported to have studied the huge pile of dead roots before declaring, “So, when are you going to set fire to this lot?” Assuming you’re not Prince Philip, where to source materials for a stumpery? Garden centres are a good place to start. They sell rocks and stones in varying shades, textures - and prices! Hardwoods such as oak, beech and the naturally rot-resistant chestnut make the best stumperies. Coniferous wood will not endure for long. Make enquiries with a local tree surgeon. They often sell timber for fi rewood, but are left with the stumps and roots. Only buy from a reputable tradesperson. It is a legal requirement that timber with a certifi able disease must be destroyed, (usually by burning on the felling site), and not sold on to the public. Take time to position your landscaping elements carefully - you only get to do it once. Safety should be a prime consideration. Large rocks and roots should be buried with approximately one third of their bulk underground, so a fair amount of continued on page 64

digging is required, even with a small-scale stumpery. Smaller logs and branches can be laid on the ground and have soil piled up against them. The idea is to create ‘pockets’, of soil; allowing plants to be positioned in the gaps and crevices in a naturalistic way. The slowly decomposing timber is an excellent habitat for wildlife; encouraging insects for birds and providing shelter and food for beetles, frogs and invertebrates. Native plants do well in stumperies. They thrive on meagre rations, so ordinary garden soil with the addition of some well-rotted leaf mould will suffice - never add manure. In damp semi-shade, the combination of ferns, violas, foxgloves and primulas is hard to beat. Astilbes, epimedium and meconopis, the exotic Himalayan poppy, will also relish the conditions. Acers will add a woodland feel and provide spectacular autumn colour. In a hot and dry spot, think about using timbers set on end. Reclaimed gate posts or railway sleepers arranged vertically give

Large rocks and roots should be buried with approximately one third of their bulk underground

a contemporary, maritime look. Roots and stumps will become sun-bleached and it’s easy to continue the seascape theme by top-dressing with pebbles and gravel. Lavender, thyme and rosemary enjoy arid conditions, while rock garden stalwarts such

as artemesia, iberis and armeria will make attractive mounds of ground-hugging foliage. Don’t forget ferns. They are an enormous and diverse family of plants and some varieties prefer a sunny outlook. No stumpery is complete without ferns!

September:

To Do...

Get your borders in order and your potatoes picked for a virtuous September in the garden, leaving you to look ahead to a colourful spring If your borders seem dull, take comfort in the fact that September is a notoriously tricky month for keeping a garden looking good. Try a different perspective and visit someone else’s garden to fi nd inspiration for next year. You’ll discover exciting new plants you’ve never heard of, but don’t go forgetting the ‘old faithfuls’; tough, reliable, hardworking perennials that are the backbone of a successful autumn planting scheme. Many heleniums, sedums and asters are looking fabulous now. Nurseries often stock pots of these beauties in full bloom useful for quickly fi lling annoying gaps. Eupatorium, with its fluff y pink flower heads, will grow a

mere 5ft high if miserable – 8ft if happy. No autumn border is complete without dahlias. With regular watering and deadheading, they’ll keep going until the fi rst frosts. You don’t like dahlias? Nonsense! There are 100’s to choose from – you just haven’t met one you like yet. Looking ahead to spring… (apologies), shrubs such as camellias and magnolias are easily overlooked when not in flower, but they’ve been busy making new flower buds throughout summer and are now quietly awaiting the arrival of spring. However, if the soil dries out, plants become stressed and those dormant buds will shrivel and die. Containerised specimens are particularly prone to drought. Be vigilant; if we have a dry autumn, give springtime shrubs a regular watering. On the vegetable patch, lift all remaining potatoes. Pick a dry day for the job. Using a border

fork, carefully lift them, shaking off loose soil, then spread them on the ground for a couple of hours for the skins to dry and ‘set’. Skins of freshly harvested potatoes are soft and can be rubbed away with ease; great if you’re taking them to the kitchen for immediate use, but no good if you want to store them. Once hardened, it’s the skin that holds in moisture and prevents mould spores damaging the interior. Without any doubt, The Worst Smell in the World is a rotting potato. Once experienced, never forgotten – even the most olfactory-challenged person will be felled by the stench. Worse still, it only takes one rotten spud to quickly affect others, so, if you’re planning to store yours, carefully check every one for damage. Any that are blemished or bruised must be used up quickly. Only those with unbroken skins and a pleasant ‘earthy’ aroma should be stored. Keep them in a dark, cool place, stored in paper or hessian sacks. They also keep well in shallow cardboard boxes or trays. Never use plastic containers as this will create condensation; perfect conditions for mould spores to thrive in. And, as every politician knows, it only takes a few days for the rot to set in… www.sussexliving.com

Dig for

Diversity

Be a wildlife buddy and create a diverse landscape in your garden. Dig a ditch, plant a wildflower patch or make an amphibian abode to attract insects and creatures to your garden You can create a wider variety of habitats for creatures simply by digging a ditch or ‘rill’ which mimics a natural feature as well as being an excellent way of dealing with surface run-off from patios or paths. Even if your ditch never gets to hold water, it will still have a more humid microclimate than flatter ground, particularly in summer. Once you decide where to place your ditch, make sure you aren’t going to hit pipes or cables and make it as long as you can, preferably more than a couple of yards as a minimum. It doesn’t have to be deep, one foot is fine, but make sure the sides slope gently to about 30 degrees or less, allowing creatures to get in and out safely; the ditch should be around two feet wide to enable the sides to slope this gently. The excavated earth can be piled up as a bank on one side to make another microclimate and a more interesting feature. You can add wetland plants as plugs or sow a wildflower mix

Your ditch will have a more humid microclimate than flatter ground, particularly in summer 70

S u ss e x L i v i n g September 2016

which will encourage insects; marsh marigold, gypsywort and lady’s-smock are particularly attractive. The ditch will really come into its own in dry weather where it will remain damp when flatter, more exposed areas are too hot for creatures that prefer cool, lush places to bask and forage. You can create a bridge as a feature or leave it for its new inhabitants to enjoy. If you want to attract frogs, toads and newts, you can create an amphibian abode in the bank of the ditch. Simply dig a round hole between a foot and 18 inches deep and fill it with logs and bricks so that they remain static and do not collapse. Keep piling material above ground level and cover it with soil, making sure there are several gaps for entrances around the edge. You can plant more wildflower plugs on top or sprinkle some seed or just add twigs for camouflage. This purpose built home should last several years before gravity and rain push soil back into the gaps and before long you may be lucky enough to see amphibians or even reptiles taking up residence. This abode should allow them to sleep through the worst of the winter and emerge, refreshed in the spring, ready to mate and spawn. www.rspb.org.uk

BY LINDA NIGHTINGALE

Your home may be worth a lot more than you realise! Read on to appreciate the potential value of your home

What is your

home worth? Have you ever wondered what your home is currently worth? It is often an owner’s most important and valuable asset, so investing time in carefully assessing its full value is of primary importance. An estate agent will normally value the sales potential of your property based on what they see as a whole, with a view to marketing in the normal manner, but there may be hidden value in your abode. Many houses have extra large corner gardens/acreage or particularly long gardens, perhaps in line with their neighbours, and this is where the value of the holding can increase. For example, a detached house on a large plot can be marketed in several ways.

72

SUSSEX LIVING September 2016

A. You could look at selling the house with the garden as a whole in the conventional manner with a view to the fact that someone will love the expanse of land. B. You could consider keeping the original house with a smaller garden by selling off the excess land as a building plot. This is particularly useful if your family has moved away and you wish to stay in the house but cannot cope with the land. Keeping the original house and having a cash injection from a developer, is well worth considering. C. You can sell your home and the land to a developer with a view to the house and large plot providing two or even more building plots, which should substantially increase the value of your investment. Selling to a developer can sometimes apply to a row of houses all with long gardens where there is a possibility of creating a “back fi ll close” of several houses. This is a more complicated process as you need several home owners to agree to the idea but you can often see where this has been carried out with clever land configurations. Other ways of retaining an interest in your property is by

selling your house and land as a whole whilst retaining a ransom strip or imposing an overage. In both these instances it is important to seek professional advice and to appreciate that such additions to the contract of sale could deter some buyers. In order to look at the potential of additional building plots you can contact developers and speak to their land department. They can often tell you immediately if there is any potential for planning by looking at the actual size of the plot and whether there are any difficulties in terms of site lines/ road access and green belt. You can also speak with your local estate agent as many work closely with developers and quite a number have their own land and new homes divisions geared up to help and advise.

DO YOU HAVE A PLOT YOU CAN BUILD ON?

1. Consider the size of your plot with a view to new build. 2. Contact developers or estate agents to receive advice on the feasibility of such a scheme. 3. Remember that this can be quite a protracted procedure. 4. Good luck!

LOCAL WALK

WALK

This circular walk, from Albourne Village Hall car park, is a relatively easy one, mainly through farmland, and visits the isolated hamlet of Blackstone, which is situated midway between Albourne and Henfield Once the roar of the busy A23 trunk road is left behind, peace and tranquillity soon descends! The walk is 4.5 miles long and should take the average walker 2.5 hours to complete. There are a few stiles to negotiate but they were all in a reasonable state at the time of the recce. Some short sections are liable to be muddy during the winter months or following periods of wet weather. It is best to start from The Street, which is located off the B2116 (Henfield Road) where there is a convenient layby in front of Hunters Mead in the vicinity of the Village Hall. Walk south along The Street and where the road bears sharply left carry straight on to take a well-defi ned track continuing southwards with superb views of the South Downs in the distance. The track dips down to cross a stream then rises to the buildings at Bishop’s Place. Just past the main building, opposite a tennis court, turn right along another well-defi ned track by a barn and lone oak tree. This track drops down to a stream then bears left, then right, uphill to a junction of paths. Take the left indicated path, through a gate, leading downhill to Albourne Place Farm, in a particularly attractive setting. Keep to your left through the farm buildings and walk uphill on a metalled track to reach Trusler’s Hill Lane. Cross the lane, and take the track opposite and midway between the lane and the buildings of Wick Farm, look for a sign-posted path to your right.

Take this path, which leads to a junction of paths where you should turn left, and walk down the field, through a belt of trees to a stile to fi nd an enclosed path leading uphill. Maintain direction ahead ignoring crossing paths. The path then bears right then left round field headlands to join an enclosed path leading out to Blackstone Lane. Turn right and walk through the hamlet of Blackstone, admiring the many attractive properties. Where the road bears sharply left, turn right into a track by

This walk is 4.5 miles long and should take the average walker 2.5 hours to complete Wick Farm Cottages and, after a few yards, left in front of a house. Follow the perimeter of the field, then bear left through a gap in the hedge almost at the bottom of the field. Pass between a pair of barns to a signpost close to a pylon. Turn left and after a short distance, take a signposted path on the right opposite cottages. Walk ahead to a footbridge over a ditch, then bear right then left on a track around two sides of Albourne Lakes (private fi shing!). Where the track bears left into a car parking area, keep right on an enclosed path, which bears left and right giving access onto a broad grassy track heading towards Albourne Church. On reaching Church Lane, turn left, and where the lane turns sharp right at the entrance to North Park Farm take the footpath ahead and continue uphill on an enclosed track that leads into a field. Maintain direction ahead to a four-way junction of paths, and turn right to the next visible signpost in the distant hedge line. Turn right and then, almost immediately, left. Follow the well signposted and defi ned footpath back to Albourne. Please note this walk is a repeat, kindly re-walked and checked by the Ramblers for Les who is recovering from a walking accident. We wish him well for a speedy recovery.

We are very grateful to Les Campbell for bringing us new and exciting local walks every month. A founder member and former Chairman of the Mid Sussex Ramblers, he is a very experienced and enthusiastic walker indeed. Les insists on testing all routes personally, making sure they are suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. The humble bramble is an enigma, a tangled prickly shrub of no great beauty. Brambles spoil many good walks, innumerable threads are torn from jumpers and shrieks of, “It’s got prickles!” often emanate from the mouths of small children. Yet brambles produce one of nature’s gems, the blackberry. Blackberries are another super-food, being full of anti-oxidants, low in fat, and high in Vitamins C and K. Brambles can grow 9m in length in year one, but they will not bear fruit until the second year. The flowers are delicate lilywhite with five petals and a pink hue. From these flowers the fruit appears, green at fi rst, then red, and fi nally the familiar lush velvety black. Find a hedgerow and collect blackberries for free. Dream away an hour or two as the last vestiges of summer warmth fade away with ever longer shadows angled across the fields. But beware of old English folklore and don’t

pick blackberries after Old Michaelmas Day on 11th October. For that was the day the Devil was excluded from heaven, cursing the brambles he landed on, as he fell to Earth. I recall days as a child with arms outstretched to avoid the prickles, popping blackberries one by one into an old ice cream container. Sometimes they split and juice would seep out. Despite my efforts to suck the nectar from my fi ngertips, slowly they would darken to a purple haze. At my grandparents house blackberry jelly was made in the kitchen, stored alongside jars of homemade raspberry, strawberry and crab apple jellies. Of course jellies are just the beginning: blackberries are good for jams, crumbles, pies, tarts, pavlova, muffi ns and so much more. Harvest time is here, let’s make the most of it. www.sussexliving.com

on a Monday afternoon, the group aims to hold more sessions once demand increases. The Shed provides a facility for woodcraft, woodturning and light metal craft, which will eventually include car restoration. The space will be a social hub, where people can meet for a coffee before getting their teeth into a project that interests them. Local businesses have proved keen to become involved, donating wood and tools as the Shed has applied for charitable status. Andy told me that he’s always been interested in excluded minorities and the Shed Movement seemed like an excellent idea with the opportunity to learn new skills and meet likeminded people. “We have a committed core,” he continued. “Once we set up our permanent workshop, people will be able to see it and we can expand.” I watched as a Moravian workbench was being constructed for the new workshop, all made from donated wood. Others were learning how to use a wood lathe and members of the local Monday

Taking off in the UK and with a hub open in Burgess Hill, The Men’s Sheds movement provides a creative community space for retired men and women When men retire and workplace camaraderie vanishes overnight, many people fi nd this change difficult to adjust to. I went along to meet members of a local initiative launched from an Australian concept called the Men’s Shed Movement to combat the challenges of retirement. Andy Harrison talked me through the weekly Burgess Hill Men’s Shed, the local provision of premises where people can gather to work on their own projects or community projects with support and advice freely available. Although the name suggests otherwise, the Men’s Shed will be open to both genders once permanent premises have been located (imminently announced as Charity status has just been granted) and younger people are likely to swell their ranks once a ‘hackspace’ has been

The Shed provides a facility for woodcraft, woodturning and light metal craft, which will eventually include car restoration incorporated into the new location. Group, who were loaning their premises were busily engaged on their own projects. The Shed offers a safe, friendly, relaxed environment in which to learn, share and experiment with new skills. Tools are provided (donations of tools are warmly welcomed) along with companionship and the stimulation of working on specific projects of benefit to the community and oneself. The rewards of joining The Shed are numerous – a sense of renewed purpose after retirement is the most obvious, but equally important are the camaraderie, skill sharing and informal learning. ‘Shedders’ on the main website have commented on the many positive aspects of joining; one member wrote that “The Shed lifted my life” while another commented that “I’d need a very good reason not to come”. This remarkably simple yet highly effective concept is spreading across the world. Get in touch and join them, the Shed is whatever you want to make it.

Power to the High Street! Villages and towns all over the country take part in The Great British High Street Awards, but this year let’s make the crowning champion a Mid Sussex High Street! Do you love browsing in Burgess Hill or perhaps you are a regular customer in Cuckfield? Or maybe you know a helpful shop worker in Haywards Heath or an excellent employee in East Grinstead? If you love local shopping then now’s your chance to get your favourite town or village recognised – and they could win a prize package which includes £10,000 cash plus expert advice and training to help boost business in the winning location. The Great British High Street Competition is now open and looking for nominations from England, Scotland and Wales’ best High Streets. But you’ll need to be quick – nominations close on Friday 9th September 2016. West Sussex County Council is supporting this year’s competition because we want to help champion the wonderful work going on in High Streets and we believe it should be recognised. And this is our opportunity to shout about it! Let’s make West and Mid Sussex winners this year, and be truly proud of our High Streets. It’s not just High Streets you can nominate either; if you have a favourite store manager or employee in a particular shop then you can nominate them to be named a ‘high street hero’, and really make their day. It’s easy to enter, and anyone can nominate their local High Street or favourite employee so if you are working in a local team or know of any business improvement districts, town teams or traders associations that deserve the spotlight, why not enter?

86

Tune in

for Business Inspiration Want some creative business inspiration? Make a date in your business diary for the 12th October when the 2nd Annual East Grinstead Business Association Business Lecture is being held Following on from their highly successful Inaugural Lecture in 2015 the East Grinstead Business Association will be holding their 2nd Annual Business Lecture on the 12th October 2016. This year the lecture will be delivered by Kevin Byrne, founder and CEO of Checkatrade and he has a story to tell. This is not your classic ‘rags to riches’ tale, but rather a story of ‘an idea to fulfillment’. Not only will Kevin deliver the lecture he will also take questions from the floor so if members of the audience have something of particular interest to them then all they will have to do is ask. Businesses generate wealth and make communities and countries thrive. Look locally and you see people in business – in business to make a living, but why do some businesses succeed and other apparently good ones fail? Those that are successful at

96

S u ss e x L i v i n g September 2016

business make a better living and one of the best ways to be better at business is to learn from others. Learning from others and hopefully being inspired by them is what the EGBA aims to achieve with their Business Lectures.

“Having a good idea is one thing, turning it into reality is something else” Kevin Byrne Checkatrade, established in 1998, is an online and in print tradesmen directory, seeking to protect consumers from rogue traders by interviewing, vetting and continuously monitoring any tradesperson who applies for and is successful in obtaining membership. Kevin Byrne who founded Checkatrade has built it with

no investment into a company with a turnover close to £15m and employing over 270 people. Kevin’s inspirational leadership, business lectures, charity work and monthly marathon runs have made him a community figurehead. If you are in business or thinking of going into business he is certainly a man to listen to.

The 2nd Annual EGBA BUSINESS LECTURE 19:00 on Wednesday 12th October 2016 Chequer Mead, East Grinstead RH19 3BS Tickets are £15 via the Chequer Mead box office 01342 302000 Schools (by arrangement) FOC For further information contact caroll.everest@egba.co.uk
