WE WORK HARD AT PLAYROOMS.

AND EVERYTHING ELSE.

The playroom was part of a much larger contract for Nutshell, and a hugely enjoyable project. Welcome to our world. The world of the possible. Sure, we’re builders, but unlike any others you might have dealt with. We go about our business in an entirely different way. We’re customer focused for a start. Our aim is to take the stress out of what can be the rather traumatic process of construction. We keep a firm control on budgets and insist on regular meetings with our clients - result - no uncomfortable financial surprises at the end of a project. Then there’s our minute attention to detail - the observation, the cleanliness, the management, the skill and the common courtesies ingrained in all our workforce. Editor’s comment According to folklore, all good things come in threes. Which makes me bold enough to speculate that after the long awaited arrival of first a British Wimbledon champion and then a future king, we’re surely due some memorable August weather too. The evidence is looking good so far! Our August issue has a royal connection too, as we bring you the history of Brantridge Park near Balcombe, home of Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone and granddaughter of Queen Victoria, for many years. Ruth Lawrence took a look around the fabulous estate (pages 6-10). Hanna Lindon went off to explore the Mid Sussex countryside. But to give her extra purpose, we sent her geocaching (pages 33-36). If you’re unfamiliar with the term, just think of it as a treasure hunt using smart phones, and you’re halfway there. Huge fun for young and old, we’re told. This month’s Home & Garden feature is all about outdoor entertaining (pages 12-19). After you’ve (hopefully) put in the hard work to make your garden look all lovely and welcoming, it’s time to reap the rewards. Invite your friends and have a party! Roger Linn took up an invitation to visit the Burgess Hill Town Football Club whose history

spans 40 years of fun, games and hard work, courtesy of the club’s dedicated volunteers. Turn to pages 37-38 for the full story. Finally, you may know John Broomfield, a lovely man who is well known and respected in Ditchling and beyond. While it is heartbreaking to hear of his ongoing battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), his determination to ‘give something back’ makes him all the more inspiring. Read pages 48-51) to find out more about the fundraising cricket match which is being organised at Ditchling Cricket Ground on 1st September in aid of the MND Association – this is definitely an event you should not miss. Sussex Living is keen to support the Mid Sussex community in any way we can. Do please get in touch (editorial@sussexliving.com) if you have a story you think may be of interest to our readers.

History

The beautiful, majestic estate of Brantridge Park

in Balcombe has a noble past indeed.

The royal history of

Brantridge Memories of Brideshead Revisited sprang to mind as I approached Brantridge Park, the imposing white house peeking over tall trees as I sped towards it down the long, curving drive. I was greeted by Brantridge’s loyal Housekeeper* for 30 years, who has a particular interest in the estate’s royal connections. Although the house is now converted into self-catering holiday apartments, she was able to show me some of the grandest rooms, which still evoke a sense of restrained elegance while hinting at an aristocratic past. Brantridge Park was originally built around 1753 as a hunting lodge for Brantridge Forest, home to wild boar and part of the estates of the Earls of Cowdray. The Manor House was constructed almost a century later; cast iron drainpipes carry the date 1846. Formal photographic portraits within depict Brantridge’s most famous resident: Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone and granddaughter of Queen Victoria. The Princess lived here from 1923 until her husband, the Earl of Athlone, became the Governor of Canada in 1941, when she was 58 years old. I could imagine her looking out across the lawns to the Downs from the magnificent oak-panelled drawing room with its floor-to-ceiling windows and ornate fireplace. Princess Alice had known her future husband since childhood; their friendship grew into love and they married in 1904 at Windsor. Her mother, Princess Helena, daughter-in-law of Queen Victoria, thought the family would benefit from a country home after World War I and chose Brantridge Park. She did not live long enough to spend much time here, as she died in 1921. * name supplied

continued from previous page

Princess Alice took to country life with relish and designed many of the garden features with the head gardener, Mr Brodby. Neighbours donated many plants, from large rhododendrons to miniature rock plants, and the flowering shrubs, grown to complement the background of specimen trees, remain to this day. I walked round the sunken garden, which she had enjoyed so much and found a semi-derelict gazebo which had been a gift – above the peeling paint, an elegant semicircular window spoke of the optimistic Art Deco era. Princess Alice would become so involved in her garden that a large bell, visible in a tower on the roof of the main house, would be rung to summon her back to attend to her abandoned guests. The Athlones regularly hosted weekend parties, and I had a glimpse of the extravagant former ballroom, with its curved wall and wrap-around

windows overlooking the grounds. A photo from 1936 shows a royal line-up on the terrace at the rear of the house: the Athlones stand next to Countess Imma Dornberg, the Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke and Duchess of Kent. The Countess looks slightly nervous. Apparently, Princess Alice had invited the Duke of Portland’s son (sitting at the end of the group) as a potential husband for her, but nothing came of the matchmaking. The Earl of Athlone’s sister was Queen Mary, wife of George V, who was notorious for her alleged kleptomaniac tendencies. Staff would regularly find objects missing after her visits, and they took to hiding items in advance to thwart her. None of this was known outside; discretion was upheld and the Royals maintained their mystique in the locality. A newspaper article of 1931 celebrates the Royal Wedding of Princess Alice’s daughter, Lady May Cambridge, and Captain Henry Abel Smith at the local church in Balcombe with the reverence of the period. It reads: “Enthusiastic crowds of villagers are delighted that a royal bride should have chosen to be married in the little church which lies nearest to Brantridge Park…they….gathered in thousands along the two miles of country lanes …” It carries on with a florid description of how the “the autumnal sun shone, gilding the russet shades of the trees and hedges with which the church is surrounded.” There was, however, a break with tradition, for it mentions that in “the revised service, omitting the word ‘obey’ was used for the first time by a royal bride at her wedding.” A close look at the reception photograph at Brantridge Park shows a young Princess Elizabeth standing in front of

the newlyweds. Another, more informal photo of the couple shows them looking relaxed, more akin to how today’s Royal Family would be portrayed. During the war, Brantridge became a safe haven for London evacuees. Princess Alice enjoyed the company of mothers and children and threw her energy and heart into looking after them, continuing to send them Christmas cards even after the war. In 1942, Queen Victoria’s daughter, Princess Beatrice, aunt to Princess Alice, came to live at Brantridge. One day in the middle of the conflict, she was standing on the balcony, cup of tea in hand, when a bomber began a rapid descent and crashed at nearby High Beeches, narrowly avoiding the house. Two years later, Princess Beatrice died at Brantridge, the last of Queen Victoria’s children. The Earl of Athlone passed away in 1957; his wife, Princess Alice, outlived him by 24 years, though they had not lived at Brantridge since 1940. Brantridge Park is not known to have any royal ghosts, although visitors have occasionally reported sightings of a Victorian maid suddenly appearing in one of the bedrooms. The closest I came to glimpsing an apparition was Sid, the 15-year-old albino peacock who drifts through the grounds like a pale-feathered shadow. He is perhaps the most appropriate reminder of Brantridge Park’s royal past, a hint of grandeur, poised symbolically beneath ancient walls that have seen so much.

Outdoor entertaining

get together with friends or family this summer and have a garden party. Here are some tips to help you get started.

set the scene Just as you would if you were entertaining inside, make sure your outdoor spaces look inviting. Clean it, weed it, sweep up and decorate with some colourful pots, if necessary, to inject a pop of colour into your garden. It’s not so much about looking

perfect, it’s more about creating an inviting space and welcoming atmosphere. Place tables and seating areas around your garden – perhaps drinks in one spot, starters or nibbles in another – to encourage guests to mingle. Make sure you have ample seating available. You don’t have to provide a chair for every guest, look at using benches perhaps, temporarily relocate indoor furniture outside, use camping or folding chairs or areas with bright coloured blankets and cushions, which can be just as inviting and make your outdoor space feel very homely. Use umbrellas or gazebos to create more shaded areas, if necessary; they can also help define spaces too. continued on next page

magical lights If you are planning for a party to go on into the evening, make sure you create the right mood and lighting. Solar lighting comes in many different designs and colours ― you can even buy solar table lamps. Consider draping fairy lights across walls. Lanterns look elegant and beautiful and can easily light up pathways, flowerbeds or tables. Alternatively, make centrepieces for your tables using foliage from the garden, add candles or tea-lights for when the natural light goes, or place tea lights into jam jars for that lovely evening glow. For light and warmth once the sun goes down, how about a firepit or chiminea? The wonderful aroma of wood smoke along with a dancing fire will add a magical quality to your event. And the kids will love you forever if you use your open fire to roast marshmallows – all you need are bamboo sticks, marshmallows and perhaps a bit of chocolate! On a practical note, remember to keep pesky mosquitoes at bay with some citronella or aloe candles. Incense sticks will also do the job and possibly smell better too! continued on next page

Barbeques are a winner with most guests – you can’t go wrong! continued from previous page

Easy summer fare It’s best not to overcomplicate the food and drink. You want simple alfresco dining – laid-back dishes and easy drinks – with great tasting dishes that you can either prepare in advance or put together quickly, so you don’t spend all your time in the kitchen. Allow yourself time to chill out too! Buffets work really well for an outdoor party. Just make sure it’s placed somewhere sheltered. Take advantage of seasonal produce

when creating your menu for light and delicious summer dishes. Everyone loves a picnic. Freshly made sandwiches, cooked chicken or ham, a selection of cheeses, grilled vegetables or pasta salad – everything seems to taste better when you’re sitting on a picnic blanket in the garden. Barbeques will be a winner with most guests: succulent meat, fish and kebabs, complemented by a variety of summer salads, fresh

fruit and veg, hotdogs for the kids – you can’t go wrong! For drinks, you might try serving fruity sodas or freshly squeezed lemonade, summer punch or healthy mocktails. Keep bottles cool in colourful tubs filled with ice. Why not accessorise your drinks? Freeze mint leaves, lemon wedges, or strawberries in ice cubes for a refreshing way to keep your cocktails or sparkling water chilled. continued on next page

Vintage tea party with old mix-and-match china?

fun and games

continued from previous page

For the younger guests (or the young at heart), why not set up some lawn games, such as horseshoes or croquet, for some old-fashioned fun, or spread out the Twister mat? If you have the space, a game of rounders, cricket or football always goes down well, either before or after food Finally, don’t forget the music. Depending on the mood of your party, you may choose to get out the acoustic guitar round the campfire for a good old singalong, or hook up your smartphone playlist to a speaker in the garden for some uptempo dancing. The important thing is to enjoy the company of friends and family in a relaxed outdoor setting and have fun!

serving in style Delight your guests with crockery that leaves an impression. Bright and colourful or patterned melamine tableware looks fun but smart too. Resistant to chips and cracks, many styles are dishwasher and microwave safe – perfect for stressfree serving and clearing up! If you have a themed event, see if you can match your crockery. Vintage tea party with old mix-andmatch china? Easy to pick up from charity or vintage shops, they can be hired in too. Come to think of it, most things can be hired to complete your party theme – anything from awnings to zigzag bunting!

gardening

August is the slowest month in the garden.

isn’t it wonderful?

Blooming Times August: the strangest month of the horticultural year. Youthful June partied in frothy petticoats made of blowsy roses and crept home at dawn, drunk on nectar. ‘Balmy’ July’s gales are notorious, bending double anything not staked up to its neck. August is the self-invited house guest: arriving at an inconvenient time, insisting on a tour of “your lovely garden” while you desperately try to think of anything that’s looking good to distract their eyes from the blackspot. The garden is quiet now; even the birds have stopped singing, on account of their annual moult. Bad-tempered blackbirds skulk at the bottom of hedges, waiting for smart new feathers to arrive. But there are advantages to August. It’s not just the birds that are silent. Perhaps your neighbours, (including the ones with the smelly barbeque and gurgling hot tub) have gone away and are currently stuck in a boiling car with their revolting children in a three-mile queue on the wrong side of Calais. See? Things could be worse. Hardy perennials that have already done their stuff, such as alchemilla and geraniums, can now be sheared off to within a few inches above ground level. Give them a dose of general fertiliser and a long drink of water – new leaves will start to appear within days. Similar treatment can be given to tall perennials, such as lupins and delphiniums: cut away their faded flower spikes, feed and water. If we have a long autumn season, many herbaceous plants will give another burst of flowers, but even if they don’t,

a mound of fresh new leaves is much easier on the eye than tatty, mildewed ones. Primulas have loved the wet spring, making fat clumps which can be lifted and divided now. Their long roots do not appreciate being stuffed into small spaces, so trim the roots with sharp scissors before replanting. Potted auriculas will also benefit from the same treatment. Deadhead everything – it’s worth the effort. Flower production slows down the moment seed heads start to form, particularly on annuals such as cosmos, nicotiana and antirrhinum. Likewise, pick your fruit and vegetables when they’re young

Deadhead everything – it’s worth the effort and tender. Peas and beans soon become tough and seedy – far better to give away any surplus produce. Why not leave a bunch of flowers on your neighbour’s doorstep to greet them on their return from Forren Parts? After arriving home at 3am to find an official envelope on the mat for an eyewateringly expensive traffic violation in Nice, plus a house heated to 30 degrees, after someone flicked the thermostat the wrong way, they’ll be needing a little bit of TLC after their ‘relaxing’ holiday. My advice? In August, stay at home. Absolutely nothing happens – it’s total bliss. SuSSex Living August 2013

He provides a fascinating insight into the Lepidoptera of Sussex with some amazing photographs of these beautiful species and facts about their lives and development. You will hear about their habitats, amazing lifestyles, fascinating progression through caterpillar and chrysalis stages and the locations they can

be found in Sussex. Adults require nectar rich plants in flower and caterpillars require succulent vegetative matter. Learn more details of their preferences. Sussex is a fantastic county for butterflies and moths. Come along to learn about them and be inspired to protect and save them too. With five of our native species now extinct and many others in serious decline they need our help. Entry is free and all are welcome. There is a car park opposite the building.

LOCAL 60s Music Evening Following the last four years’ sellout 60s music discos in Ditchling Village Hall, we are repeating the event on 26 October, 7.30pm, and featuring, as before, a top Brighton DJ and all those great bands of the 60s decade. You can dance to the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Supremes, Manfred Mann and all your favourites and help raise money for a wildlife charity (see below) at the same time. Tickets cost the same as the last two years, just £12, including light refreshments. A wellstocked bar will be available, but you can bring your own drinks if you prefer. As numbers are strictly limited, it is advisable to book your tickets early to avoid being disappointed, which unfortunately happens to some people every year due to the popularity of this event. Tickets are available from

editorial@sussexliving.com 1 August at Ditchling Post Office and Parkers in Ditchling High Street or by phoning 01273 845361. No tickets will be available on the door. The charity which will benefit is Fauna & Flora International (reg charity 1011102), backed by Sir David Attenborough and under the patronage of HM the Queen. Last year, we raised £2,800 to help the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas of East Africa. Only 780 of these gentle and charismatic apes remain and our funding last year has helped their continued survival. This year’s proceeds will again help threatened primates and more details of the project we’ve selected will be available soon.

Sussex Jazz and Blues Festival In October 2010, the Forest Row Jazz Club was born and on one

beautiful evening it was decided to arrange an all-day jazz festival in the front courtyard at the Brambletye Hotel. The July day featured ten acts from all over the UK and attracted over 200 people who were totally blown away by the talent on show. This all came to a head with a packed bar dancing the night away to the brilliant sounds of The Cuban Violets. With the success of the first festival day, we decided to do a second day, this time in June which tagged itself onto the Jubilee Celebrations held on Forester’s Green. There were nearly 300 people who enjoyed twelve different acts of the highest quality. And despite the weather, everybody had a fantastic time! Now things are going to change...Springhill Farm at Weirwood Reservoir have offered to host this year’s all weekend festival that will have non-stop

bands and solo performers back to back from Friday 30th August at 7pm right through to Sunday 1st September, finishing at around 7pm. There will be camping available on this exquisitely beautiful farm, food vendors all over the place and a range of beers to make your mind boggle! We have become the Sussex Beer and Jazz Fest for 2013 and will offer a range of real ales, ciders, wines and beers (as well as everything else) especially for the weekend, all sourced from many local producers and all delicious. The music will be out of this world with huge well-known acts that will make you dance, be amazed, be blown away, mesmerised or just totally relaxed; all in the most incredible surroundings under the sun (hopefully!). Wristbands for the weekend, day tickets and merchandise are available from sussexjazz.org (which will be up and running by the time this

Hurstpierpoint Parish Church’s last rebuilding project was completed in 1845 after the Victorians decided that the much smaller Norman church wasn’t ‘fit for purpose’ and hired Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Palace of Westminster, to design a new one. Bioresonance therapy has had so much positive press coverage recently i.e. Richard & Judy, BBC News 24 & The Telegraph that you are probably already aware of it. It has nothing to do with hypnosis but is a treatment method which has been used in Europe for over 26 years to treat many ailments including allergies, asthma, skin problems, muscular relief, heart disease, drug addiction, weight control and much more. Since then it has been modified and has now been found to be extremely effective in the treatment of nicotine addiction. In fact, these modifications have lead to 90 per cent of people becoming free of their addiction after just one treatment.

How does it compare with other smoking cessation treatments? • Richard and Judy quoted a 7% success rate with nicotine patches and gum • Acupuncture and hypnosis have been known to produce a 30% success rate • Smoking cessation clinics have shown a 15% success rate • Going “cold turkey” has about a 3% success rate

LOCAL Standen Needs You!

With major restoration projects underway and an increase in opening days and hours this year, Standen is now on the lookout for even more volunteers to join their friendly team. From being a Room Guide in the house, to visitor services, running kids events and tour guiding, there are many different opportunities for

For instance, Standen’s outdoor volunteer team is playing a crucial role in the garden restoration work and there are opportunities to get involved in the Kitchen Garden, garden maintenance (yes weeding too!) or even as a garden guide, to share its story with visitors. You can mix and match the roles available from gardening to tour guide to visitor experience assistant. Volunteering your time is a great way to learn new skills, develop your CV, get work experience, meet new people and expand your horizons. It is the people that make the place come to life and Standen wants to hear from you if you are passionate about heritage and conservation. “I love to be able to give my time to other people and in such wonderful surroundings,” says Keith Hodgson, Room Guide

Hurstpierpoint Singers After enjoying a successful season with our new Musical Director, Paul Simpson, we’re looking forward to the 2013/14 programme, which includes yet another Village Christmas Extravaganza and, in the spring, Handel’s Messiah. If you enjoy singing, come along and join

us. We’re a small friendly group, who meet every Monday at 7.30pm in the the Methodist Church, Cuckfield Road, Hurstpierpoint. Rehearsals commence on 9th September. All voices welcome (especially tenors). This year, for the first time, we are holding an open rehearsal on Monday, 23rd September, as part of The Hurst Festival. We hope all will come and enjoy the experience and, if you sing, this will offer the opportunity to “try before you buy”. You might surprise yourself and us! Making music can be fun.

LOCAL a cast of what seemed to be thousands we have a cast of just four for Ronald Harwood’s play ‘Quartet’ to be directed by Jill Hewer. The play was first produced at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford in July 1999 and subsequently transferred to the Albery Theatre in the West End. There are four excellent parts – two female and two male, all of retirement age. Reggie, a real gentleman; Wilf, a bit of an old devil and plain speaking! and Cissy, sometimes away with the fairies and rather ‘forgetful’. Into their cosy world comes a newcomer – Jean, who also happens to be Reggie’s exwife, which causes all sorts of problems. During the play we find out about the lives of each of them, which is in turn both poignant and humorous. Jill is very enthusiastic about bringing this play to the Ditchling stage and auditions

ODT SOLICITORS:

Serving Mid Sussex ODT Solicitors LLP is based in Hurstpierpoint and Brighton and serves private and business clients throughout Sussex and the South East. Harvey Osler co-founded the firm in 1998, and opened its Hurstpierpoint office in 2005, bringing a fresh approach to the local legal world.

Previously known as Osler Donegan Taylor, the firm incorporated in 2011 and provides high-end specialist legal services within the framework of a modern, technologically-adept practice. Harvey (pictured right) explains: “I find it surprising that, even today, many firms have no proper website, no individual email facilities, no document scanning facilities, no voicemail facilities, have strict 9am to 5pm opening hours and close at lunchtime, charge hidden extras on the costs they are quoting, or provide important legal services through unqualified staff. But these very weaknesses have enabled our firm to gain a substantial market share in a relatively short period of time.” Priding itself on being approachable, efficient, digitally and technology literate, providing full and clear information regarding costs, and being flexible to client needs, ODT has made a significant impact in the Mid Sussex area over the past 8 years and, despite the difficult economic times, looks forward to a period of sustained growth and prosperity as Mid Sussex recovers from recession. “Since December last year, we have seen a significant increase in new enquiries and instructions, and have the definite feeling that the general mood is improving locally and that the ‘feelgood factor’ is beginning to return.” Harvey developed his expertise as a property and civil litigation lawyer in the 80s and 90s, before resigning from his former partnership to set up his own practice, and then teaming up with Rupert Taylor,

30

SuSSex Living August 2013

Jeremy Donegan and Paul Barnes as a leading property practice. Rupert oversees the commercial and residential conveyancing in Brighton, Jeremy now dispenses justice as a judge, and Paul heads up the litigation department in Brighton. The firm has developed and recruited some of the leading property lawyers in Sussex in the shape of partners Lawrence Gibbons, Tim Morgan and Phil Rowland and is regarded as the leading firm in the highly specialist field of leasehold enfranchisement (freehold acquisitions, lease extensions, formation of right to manage companies, landlord & tenant disputes). Additionally, partner Charles Fuente provides a wealth of experience and expertise in business and company law, in which he is an authority, contributing to the leading text books in the field. In 2005, Harvey opened the current office in Hurstpierpoint, the village where he lived for many years, developing excellent relations with local estate agents, independent financial advisers, accountants and others, to establish a permanent and growing presence in Mid Sussex. Harry Tuke (pictured far right) joined the practice in 2010 as an experienced, qualified conveyancing solicitor and has established himself as one of the leading property lawyers in Mid Sussex, now handling a large part of the conveyancing work. Harry discusses ODT’s position in the market: “Having worked for other practices in Sussex, ODT stands out as

mixing modern technology with established principles of client care, and protecting their best interests. Although most conveyancing matters thankfully run smoothly, inevitably there are ‘problem properties’ with technical legal problems (for example regarding access/ easements/covenants/planning). As an experienced and trained solicitor, I can identify these at any early stage, resolve those that are capable of being resolved, and warn clients of those that cannot. Our charges reflect the personal and customised service we provide with a qualified solicitor personally in charge of every stage of the transaction, which we think represents excellent value. All too often, clients tell us of previous experiences of law firms through gritted teeth – as first time buyers who shopped around for the very cheapest they could find, then learnt that many of these practices (often based away from the South East) offer a ‘factory line production’ service via numerous unqualified personnel, who can each deal perfectly well with the specific routine task allocated to them, but who do not see the whole, and cannot spot and resolve issues with ‘problem properties’. These clients tell me that in circumstances where, for example, they agree to purchase a property for over £500,000, and incur a liability to the government for over £20,000 on stamp duty land tax, it is a false economy to have unqualified staff handling one of the most important transactions in their lifetime.” Lindsay Keith joined the practice as a consultant solicitor in 2011 to provide specialist wills and probate services, having previously been the principal of a local practice, and he continues to serve the local community where he is well known and respected. Lindsay offers free home visits to local clients. Harriet Hamilton-Orr (pictured right) is a paralegal and splits her time between the Hurstpierpoint and Brighton offices, assisting behind the scenes and keeping the office running smoothly.

Treasure Hunt for the

digital age

geocaching is the global treasure hunting game

that’s taking the uK by storm. All you need is a spare afternoon, a smartphone or other gPS device and a natural curiosity for the great outdoors.

My teenage cousin Hebe is kneeling beside a gate on the leafy fringes of Balcombe, rummaging excitedly in the grass. “It’s here!” she calls triumphantly. “I’ve found it.” Guy and I both lean in closer. She’s holding an old 35mm film capsule covered in a layer of dirt and grit. To most people, it would look like just another piece of rubbish discarded by a careless passer-by – but we know better. Because, according to our GPS, that little black plastic cylinder is a geocache, and it’s just one among hundreds of similar treasure stashes that are scattered around the Mid Sussex area. If you’ve never heard of geocaching, then the term bears some explanation. The game began in America around 13 years ago, when GPS enthusiast Dave Ulmer decided to test the accuracy of satellite navigation by hiding a prize container in the woods near his home and encouraging his Internet pals to track it down. The resulting hunt was the beginning of a craze that would spread worldwide and draw in millions of participants across the globe. There are now almost 70,000 geocaches in the UK alone, and they can be anything from a piece of notepaper rolled up in a film capsule to something truly valuable. All are recorded and logged on the free, open community website www.geocaching.com. Mid Sussex is particularly rich in geocaches. There are cache trails following lanes and footpaths around Plumpton, East Chiltington, Burgess Hill, Wivelsfield and East Grinstead – in fact, no matter where you live in the area, there’s bound to be secret stashes within a few miles of your home. The game is fun, free and easy to take part in. All you need is a handheld GPS or a smartphone, and sharp eyes for spying out hidden treasure. continued on next page

Shrieks of excitement as we find the cache in the tangled branches of

My partner Guy and I are both a little deficient in that last area, which is why we’ve commandeered the help of my 14-yearold cousin Hebe for the day. Also part of our geocaching team is Albus, the golden retriever puppy, who sadly seems more interested in chasing his ball than assisting with the hunt. We start at Balcombe station, and soon we’re scouring the village outskirts for a series of caches known as the ‘Balcombe Boundaries’. Like most sports, geocaching encompasses a series of levels. Some caches are much trickier to find than others, and if you’re just starting out, then it’s best to opt for treasure boxes marked with a difficulty rating of 1. Our first find is a cache secreted away beside a gate on Oldlands Avenue and was described by the person who had hidden it as a ‘micro-cache’. Predictably, Hebe is the first to spot the little film box tucked away beneath a flat stone. Inside is a roll of paper signed by dozens of previous geocachers. There’s no treasure as such, but the thrill of discovering that first cache gives us all the beginnings of the geocaching bug. There are shrieks of excitement as we find the second Oldlands Avenue cache in the tangled branches of a tree, and soon we’re romping down a footpath on the east side of Balcombe looking for the third micro-cache of the series.

Finding micro-caches – tiny boxes containing nothing but a logbook, so that treasure hunters can record their names for posterity – is great fun, but the real excitement comes from tracking down the larger caches. These fall under several categories, and are generally Tupperware boxes filled with small, exchangeable items. One of the first rules of geocaching is never to take anything without replacing it with something else, so it’s a good idea to carry a few low-value items along with you on a hunt. These could be anything from key rings or sticker packs to pretty stones and shells – some well-to-do geocachers have even been known to leave money, so you never know what you might find. For your first geocaching adventure, look for caches marked ‘large’ – that way, you’ll have a choice of treasure to take home with you. Quite apart from the thrill of uncovering hidden booty, geocaching is a great way to get the whole family out and exploring the countryside. Most trails are laid in scenic areas along well-established walks, and many can be linked to create a walking circuit of any size you choose. Our route ran along the edge of Ardingly Reservoir, following the ‘Reservoir Rambles’ series laid by the geocacher Flatcoat Walker. It made for the perfect summer day out and even managed to keep a walking-phobic teenager happily entertained. This is a game for all ages – and it’s one that I’ll certainly be playing again.

Getting started Anybody can be a geocacher – all you need is a GPS device or a phone with GPS capabilities. Find cache coordinates at www.geocaching.com and log them on your GPS. Now simply follow your sat nav as it leads you straight to the geocache of your choice. Don’t forget to leave at least one item for any that you take away. Afterwards, you can share your photos and experiences with thousands of other geocachers on the online community.

Burgess Hill Town Football Club

was formed in 1882. getting off to a flying start, the team beat Cuckfield 12-1 in their opening fixture.

Burgess Hill’s

beautiful game Top left: Stuart Tuck in action. Top Right: Burgess Hill Town Football Club then and now.

Now, 131 years later, the club is still at the heart of Burgess Hill and offers local people the opportunity to watch the best semi-professional football in Sussex. This year, they finished eighth in the Ryman League South and with ex-Brighton and Hove Albion player Ian Chapman as their manager, they have serious ambitions to go much higher. The Under-18 Youth team won the divisional title for the third year in succession and the 2013/14 season will see the introduction of an Under-21 side to carry on the momentum and help to transition youth players into the senior side. But the current success of the club is only part of the story, because the club’s path from the late 19th century to now is as much a record of the local community as that of a football club.

Peter Strange is the Life President of Burgess Hill Football Club and its official historian. Having been involved as a player, manager and administrator for some 56 years, he’s actually lived much of that history and has compiled the ‘Burgess Hill Football Club Story’. It is an incredibly detailed account through which the researcher can track wars and social change, alongside the ups and downs of a football club managed and run by volunteers. It reveals evolving manners, values and customs as much as football results. Sir C. Aubrey Smith, the famous cricketer and Hollywood film star, played for the club in the 1890s, and when Tottenham Hotspur visited for a friendly match in 1904, we find that ‘on the way down they continued on next page SuSSex Living August 2013

stopped for a hot luncheon at the Station Hotel, Haywards Heath’. Burgess Hill provided players for the Titanic Disaster Fund match in 1912 and, of course, the entire playing strength ‘joined up’ during the First World War. Great events appear, almost in passing alongside the everyday minutiae of football. The record shows that in the four years leading up to1944, 200 incendiaries and 14 high explosive bombs had been dropped on Burgess Hill, but at the same time it notes the death of ‘Tich’ Wickens, sometime goalkeeper to the club who took up grave digging in his 74th year ‘to give himself something to do’. An ongoing problem from the very earliest days was finding permanent headquarters for Burgess Hill FC with a decent, enclosed pitch and some changing facilities. And by the time the club finally settled into their home at Leylands Park in 1971, they’d had more grounds than you would find in a coffee jar. I counted nine, but there could be more, and they included, Burgess Hill Park, Fir Toft, the Fairfield Road recreation ground, the meadow at Highlands, the golf field on Junction Road, the Victoria Pleasure Gardens, Janes Lane and so on. They were virtually nomadic, even if their journeys simply took them on a tour of Burgess Hill. It’s not a new problem for amateur sports clubs. Throughout the long history of Burgess Hill FC, there are issues which any club sportsman will immediately recognise: complaints about players not paying their ‘subs’; secretaries resigning

because nobody appreciated them; furious debates about the merits of joining up with other clubs (they did join together with the World’s End Football Club); disciplinary issues on and off the field; and votes of thanks for the selfless hard graft of unpaid volunteers. And that is an area where the club has always been particularly wellserved by people like Peter Strange and John Buck. John was recently presented with the Football Association’s long service medal for his 64 years of service with Burgess Hill Town FC, during which time he has fulfilled almost every role from player to washer-upper, groundsman to team manager. Roger Puttick and Alan Turpin are just two more of the club’s hard-working stalwarts, without whom it simply could not function. Richard Strange took up the post of General Manager last year and his energy and enthusiasm for the role are immediately apparent. He won’t tell you, of course, but he holds the record as the youngest player ever to play for the senior team when he appeared at the age of 15. Now, many years later, he is driving the whole enterprise forward. “It’s important to run this club, which offers semi-professional standard football but is staffed by unpaid amateurs, as professionally as possible,” says Richard. “There’s a huge amount of goodwill for the club in Burgess Hill and area and we need to harness that by making sure that everybody who comes here has a really good experience. We’re getting it right on the pitch. Now we’re going to get it right off-field too.” There are plenty of clues that Richard means what he says, judging by recent events, such as mascots from local clubs and schools appearing before the game; a beer festival; closer links with Southdown FC, free entry for under 18s to all games, and the expansion of the club’s catering services and growing demand for its hospitality room, which is free for community events, private parties, weddings, christenings etc, provided the bar is hired – in fact all events which mark community life. As the next season is about to start, I’m looking forward to watching a match or two over a beer at Burgess Hill Football Club.

Hassocks Eyecare Centre

Take a look! Outstanding customer care, an extensive range of stylish frames, the latest in new technology and a centre village location – isn’t it time you took a closer look at Hassocks eyecare Centre?

It’s exciting times for Vicki Macken, as she celebrates her first year as owner of Hassocks’ independent opticians. “I’m very excited about my practice,” she tells me. “It was something I had always dreamed about and it’s great to finally have this opportunity.” Having grown up in Burgess Hill, Vicki knew from a very young age that she wanted to be an optician. “I got my first pair of glasses when I was eight years old, but I rapidly became increasingly short sighted. Then, at the age of 14, they gave me contact lenses and sent me out into the world, and I thought: how cool is that! These tiny pieces of plastic gave me an incredible sharpness of vision and sense of freedom. I wanted to know how to do that.” A year later, Vicki worked as a receptionist at her local practice where dispensing optician, Anne Sales, taught her how to measure and fit glasses. After studying at City University and Exeter Eye Hospital, Vicki qualified as an optician. She then briefly returned to work at the practice, before spending the next 18 years at a Brighton practice. With her children now older, Vicki felt in a position to realise her second ambition, which was to have her own practice and, last year, she bought the Hassocks Eyecare Centre from Peter and Marlene Holter. Marlene still works there on a part-time basis and Vicki has also been reunited with Anne (both pictured right), who now works alongside her as the dispensing optician. “I love nothing more than seeing someone leave with a pair of glasses they love, or solving someone’s problem with gritty eyes, or getting someone free

of glasses with contact lenses,” says Vicki. Indeed, customer care is hugely important at Hassocks Eyecare Centre. The small and friendly team make sure that you’re always served by the same familiar faces, so that they can really get to know you. Building these personal relationships means you benefit from eye care and advice that is not only of the highest standards, but is also exactly right for you and your eyes. When it comes to frames, being an independent optician gives Vicki the professional freedom to deal with a range of suppliers. And while there’s a comprehensive range to choose from, including brands such as Elle, SuperDry, Ted Baker, Gant and Guess, the emphasis is on modern stylish frames for those looking for quality, comfort and detail. “We dispense a lot of William Morris frames which are contemporary and on trend, with an understated attention to detail in terms of design and colour,” says Vicki. “They are also extremely well made and great value for money. I don’t think our customers feel a need to define themselves with high-end labels; they just want to look good in their glasses.” Vicki and her team are also excited by new contact lens products now available. Dailies Total 1 is a groundbreaking daily disposable contact lens, which is both breathable and actually stays moist through the day. Not only does the lens offer allday comfortable wear, but as eyes tend to dry out as we age, it also means that you can happily wear contact lenses to an older age than was possible before. “Patients who have taken them away have

absolutely loved them; they can tell it’s a different breed of contact lens,” Vicki tells me. As a dispensing optician, measuring and fitting for lenses and advising on the best lens products for patients, Anne is particularly excited by the newest varifocal lenses from Essilor. The Varilux S Series, which has won Lens Product of the Year 2013, gives patients the closest thing to natural vision available in a spectacle lens, maximising fields of vision and giving more visual stability and balance while moving around. As patient care is at the heart of everything they do, the Hassocks Eyecare Centre has recently invested in the very latest Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanning technology. While retinal cameras can photograph the back of the eye, an OCT scan can see under the retina to parts unable to be seen by an ordinary examination. This can highlight any hidden problems such as glaucoma, early diabetic changes or macular degeneration. The team are also proud to be part of the Acute Community Eye Service (ACES), which provides GP-referred patients with a free assessment of their Hassocks Eyecare Centre eye condition. What’s more, the practice can also offer coloured 17 Keymer Road, Hassocks, West Sussex BN6 8AD overlay assessments for children Tel. 01273 843946 with dyslexia. www.hassockseyecare.co.uk With such impressive credentials, services, products Mention this article or bring in a copy of and keen prices on offer, the Sussex Living when you have an eye test, and village is lucky to have such a collect your FREE box of lens and screen wipes. local service at its fingertips. Summer

Holiday? Go freestyle! getting ready for your trip to the summer sun is a state of mind. embrace that holiday vibe from the moment you start packing.

We’ve all seen the fashion features: ‘10 key items to take on holiday’, ‘5 must-have beach buys’, ‘What Kate Moss packs in her summer suitcase’ – cleverly targeted advertising telling us that holiday perfection depends on what’s in our suitcase. Straight away, we go into ‘list mode’, planning and worrying about getting our summer look just right. I, on the other hand, have decided to take this uplifting piece of advice, which comes from The Guardian fashion pages: ‘Don’t have a holiday wardrobe, have a holiday style philosophy instead.’ I like that idea. Speaking from personal experience, items bought specifically for a trip abroad invariably don’t see the light of day again once they’ve been put back into the wardrobe at home. And that’s assuming they did actually get worn on holiday, never a certainty with new purchases. Then there’s the expense. OMG, have I ever overspent on lastminute must-have holiday buys in the past – stuff that’s too cold and inappropriate to wear at home but, somehow, seemed essential to pack. Not that I am a stranger to investment buying, but isn’t it far

more sensible to buy garments you really love and will keep wearing any time, anywhere, especially if there is a price tag to be justified? Of course, when it comes to travel packing, less is more. And you don’t need a glossy magazine to tell you that you should pack enough underwear and that a maxi dress can seamlessly take you from beach to bar, when teamed with a little clutch and some sparkly heels. Two items, incidentally, that will never ever make it into my holiday suitcase, on account of being totally useless for chilling out. I mean, who has ever really relaxed in heels anyway? So, my holiday style philosophy comes down to this: Wear what makes you feel good. I like simple T-shirts and floaty skirts; you may prefer to flash your legs in shorts. It’s all good. Layer up. Scarves, wraps, sarongs, cardies, pashminas – anything you can just throw on for sun protection, for keeping warm after dark (or while travelling), to show respect for local customs, or just for effect. Easy. And I could KISS the inventor of the jersey maxi dress – one garment, job done, bliss! Swimwear is the only summer clothing I would not hesitate to splash out on. But when you’re stripping down to bare essentials and feeling at your most valuable, a well-constructed confidenceboosting swimsuit or bikini will be worth every penny. Move over, Beyoncé. Life’s a beach.

Anita Hayman has worked in the beauty industry for over 25 years and her energy and enthusiasm for the business knows no bounds. A local girl, she trained as a beauty therapist and, in 1988, set up her own beauty salon in Hassocks. Anita now owns and runs the Tamarind Treatment Rooms in Burgess Hill. Five years ago, she decided to launch the Sussex Beauty Training School. “I was frustrated by the challenge of finding well-trained staff and decided to set up a fully accredited beauty school to offer quality professional training of the highest standard to those looking for a beauty career,” Anita explains. “We take absolute beginners and, this year, our students ranged from 18 to 65 years old. Many are mums looking for a new direction.” Courses are part-time, ranging from 5 to 30 hours a week, with a 9.30am-2.30pm day, and offer an intense eight months of training. Accredited by CIBTAC (The Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology), the qualifications are recognised worldwide and prepare students to walk straight into a job.

Class sizes are small to ensure personal attention for every student. The Class of 2013 performed so well in their final exams that CIBTAC contacted Anita to say how impressed they were. All of the students now have jobs, in both spas and salons. “The students benefit from work experience at the Tamarind Treatment Rooms and are trained using quality salon brands such as Eve Taylor, Tisserand Aromatherapy and LCN Nailcare and Guinot,” Anita tells me. “Also, the whole philosophy of our beauty salon is based on holistic treatments. Whether it’s a facial or a massage, the ethos is to think, diagnose and treat the whole person. This not only benefits our beauty clients, but also helps to develop our students’ skills.” Anita is full of praise for her teaching colleagues Sarah and Sam, as well as Karen and Claire, therapists at the Tamarind Treatment Rooms. As part of their ongoing training, the teaching team are also studying for a degree in Clinical Massage to enhance both the depth of their teaching and their salon treatments. “I love people and I’m passionate about teaching,” says

John Broomfield’s

big day out

Ditchling Cricket Club has played host

to some famous charity events over the years; this year will be no exception. Sunday 1st September is the date for the MnDA

(Motor neurone Disease Association) fundraiser, and it will be a family day to remember.

John Broomfield with granddaughter Isla on Brighton seafront.

In addition to some highly entertaining and, hopefully, heavily sponsored cricket, there will be a wide range of other events. We are promised a Punch & Judy show, face painting, a charity auction, a barbecue, teas, cakes and sticky buns and who knows what else? There may even be stoolball. The fun and games will begin around 11am with the cricket starting at 12.30pm, when Ditchling Cricket Club will play ‘John Broomfield’s Rascals’. The teams will compete for a mystery ‘purse’, donated by the Broomfield family, which the winning captain will present to the MNDA representative on the day. If Ditchling’s reputation for hospitality is any guide, it should be a brilliant day out. And it is the brainchild of a well-known, respected and much liked local man.

On 7th March 2013, John was diagnosed with MND.

“It wasn’t just me falling over; my world turned upside down.”

On 7th March this year, John Broomfield was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. In previous months, he’d been having increasing problems with walking and balance, and he’d fallen over more than once, but the diagnosis was still a terrible shock. “It wasn’t just me falling over,” said John, “my world turned upside down.” MND is progressive and incurable. It soon became apparent that John had a particularly aggressive variety, and he rapidly lost the physical ability to perform quite simple, everyday functions. The speed at which the disease took hold was simply bewildering, and not just for John, of course, but also for his family and his many friends. He fell into a ‘dark place’ as he came to terms with what was happening to him and its inevitable consequences. Which of us would not? But it was not the first time in his life that he’d had to face ill-fortune and, after a short time, he reacted with the courage and vigour that he’d displayed 15 years earlier when his family business crashed. A successful pig farmer with a large and thriving farm between Ditchling and Streat, John, at the continued on next page

insistence of a major supermarket chain, was forced to invest an enormous sum of money into ‘uprating’ his pig-rearing facilities. No sooner had this modernisation taken effect, than the same company decided that pigs could be bought much cheaper in Eastern Europe and withdrew all their custom. To his great distress, John did not only lose his business, but had to sell some of the farmland that had been in his family for generations. He was left with no business, no income but a wife and four young children to support; it would break many people, but it didn’t break John Broomfield. Almost his sole asset was now a van, so, after a bit of thought, he started a removals business. Well you would, wouldn’t you? That inauspicious

backs-to-the-wall beginning was the start of a long road, which led to today’s highly successful John Broomfield Storage & Removals Ltd, currently run by son Joe and wife Liz. John is fond of saying “You don’t know someone until you see them when the chips are down...” – and how right he is. In rebuilding his life, John will tell you he was fortunate in having the support of his really strong, loving family and of Liz, his wife, who has always been the rock on which their foundations are built. They, of course, have thrown themselves into organising, energising and helping to run the Family Fun Cricket Day fundraiser. Margaret, John’s elder sister, is at the centre of the day’s planning, while Sue, John’s younger sister, is in charge of not just

Matthew Searle of Ditchling Cricket Club has been a fantastic supporter in helping to put on the event. But behind it all is John’s willpower and his determination to make a difference, if he can, and that is why the day is in support of the MNDA. They really do make a difference because everything they do is focused on the needs of people living with MND. This is their mission statement: “To fund and promote research to bring about an end to MND. Until then, we will do all that we can to enable everyone with MND to receive the best care and achieve the highest quality of life possible. We will also do all that we can to support the families and carers of people with MND.”

The local MNDA support group have been there for the family throughout John’s ordeal and, according to Liz, “they’ve been superb and their care and help have been invaluable.” The Motor Neurone Disease Association is the sole charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that funds research into the disease. A membership organisation with nearly 8,000 members and some 3,000 volunteers, MNDA has a very helpful and informative website where you can find out much more, or perhaps even become a volunteer yourself. But in the short term, you can contribute most to John Broomfield’s big day out by bringing all the family to Ditchling Recreation Ground on Sunday 1st September. See you there.

Sayers Common Walk A 4-mile walk through peaceful, largely arable farmland around Sayers Common, this route also takes in

Hickstead equestrian Showground.

From Sayers Common Church in Oakhurst (parallel to the B2118, formerly the A23), find a narrow path through the trees and cross the B2118, then go through a driveway between two stone pillars and a lodge on your right. On reaching a T-junction, turn right. Carry on along a tarmac drive and, at the entrance to LVS Hassocks, bear right and then left around buildings on an unsurfaced track, leading to a metal gate. Go through this gate and follow the obvious path ahead, which bears right and then left to Stuccles Farm. At the farm, carry on ahead, with a pond on your left, and follow the concrete track out to Twineham Lane. On reaching the lane, turn right and, after about 150 yards, look for a stile and signpost on your left just before a telegraph post. Go over the stile and follow down a left-hand field edge to another stile. Go over this stile and a small footbridge, aiming just to the right of a large oak tree in the field ahead. Bear slightly to your right to the next signpost, and follow alongside a line of trees. At the end of the tree line, a field appears on your right and, at the next signpost, go over a footbridge and into the next field. (At the time of this walk, the footbridge was very overgrown, so you might prefer to sidestep to your left and go through a gap in the field boundary). Carry on ahead on a wide cart track and, on reaching a rough area of ground on your left, look for a signed path on your right and go over the stile

and footbridge into a large field. Bear left and keep just to the right of a young oak tree. Soon, the next stile becomes visible in the paddock fencing ahead. Go over this stile and cross the paddock to the corner of a tennis court, then go over two stiles and out to the driveway leading to Great Wapses Farm. Turn right along the drive, bearing left in front of the house to pass through a stabling area, then right on a signed bridleway around a pond, then sharp right along an obvious track heading in an easterly direction, with a fence on your right. The bridleway eventually becomes an attractive tree-lined glade (Gattons Lane) – and you should follow this out to Twineham Lane close to Herrings Farm. On reaching Twineham Lane, turn right, ignoring the turning to the Old Farm House and, in about 150 yards, turn left on a track signed to New House Farm. Pass through the farm buildings and carry on ahead on a rough track. Just after a pond on your right and a dwelling on your left, go

right over a very high stile and into a long meadow. Walk up this meadow, keeping close to the righthand field edge to go over a couple of stiles at the far end. Go through a strip of woodland and, at the far end, keep right to follow the field edge through a succession of small fenced paddocks (there are hand

grips in the fencing to allow access). Pass through a rough wooded area and out to the B2118, where you should turn right for Sayers Common Church and your car.

The place to meet

in Haywards Heath The Birch has been a landmark hotel in Haywards Heath since 1851. While it has retained most of its beautiful Victorian features, the stylish new bar and free WiFi has brought the hotel straight into the

Newly appointed General Manager, Neil Wheeler, has over 25 years’ experience in the hotel industry. And he’s a local boy, raised in Uckfield. “I remember regular family journeys to Haywards Heath. As soon as we reached The Birch, I knew we’d arrived,” he tells me. “It was my landmark and it’s really good to have returned full circle.” Neil began his career at Horsted Place Hotel in Uckfield, before moving to a Forte hotel based at Gatwick, where he benefited from a comprehensive management training scheme, giving him both the knowledge and experience to really launch his career. After stints in New York, Los Angeles and Berlin, Neil returned to the UK where he carved out a niche as a trouble shooter in the hotel industry. The move to The Birch is something of a change of direction for him. “I’m lucky because The Birch is already a successful hotel. My aim is to make it a beacon for the local community: a place where people meet for a coffee, a drink, a meal, or enjoy a relaxed business meeting,” he explains. “We are the only hotel in Haywards Heath and we need to ensure that our local residents also come and enjoy our hospitality and everything that’s on offer.” Whether you’re planning to meet friends for morning coffee, a meal or afternoon tea, you can choose from the attractive, wood-panelled lounge, the stylish new bar area or the light and airy restaurant. Talented Head Chef, Gary Lloyd, ensures that all the food is freshly made to order from local produce, even down to the sauces. And since arriving at The Birch, Gary has developed a new menu, moving away from classic hotel fare to a contemporary European menu, which has proved incredibly popular. His signature style is hot stone cooking, a fun and interactive way of cooking meat or fish, brought sizzling to your table on a 400 degree stone ‘hot plate,’ so it’s cooked exactly how you like it and the dish stays hot right until the last mouthful.

Cool, contemporary new bar – a great place for

pre-dinner cocktails or after-work drinks .

The Birch is also proud of its cool and contemporary new bar, with its modern design really complementing the more historic parts of the building. With its own entrance and ample convenient parking, it makes a great place for pre-dinner cocktails or after-work drinks. “We’re keen to address popular held misconceptions that hotels are expensive. While that might perhaps be true for London or Gatwick, all of our prices are competitive,” explains Neil. “A pint of bitter is £2.95. Afternoon tea is £8. And if you need a room for family or friends, just call for our best rates.” Visitors can also enjoy free wifi throughout the hotel, with a 40Mb download speed, making it faster than most domestic connections – very handy for meetings away from the office, perhaps over coffee or a bite to eat. What’s more, The Birch offers a range of private meeting rooms, including the impressive Oval Room, encircled by a wood panelled library. The newly launched Danny’s Comedy Club, with shows on the last Friday of every month, is also proving popular. Showcasing new and exciting comedy talent, over 18s can enjoy a great night out for an entry fee of just £5, along with discounts and special offers on both food and drink prices.

“My aim is to make The Birch a beacon for the local community: a place where people can relax socially or for business.” Above: General Manager Neil Wheeler (right) with his Deputy Lainné José and Head Chef Gary Lloyd

“We’re not just a hotel with a bar, restaurant and bedrooms,” says Neil. “Alongside the comedy club, we also offer tribute nights, so we’ve got Abba coming up in November. We do Christmas joiner party nights, which means that whatever size your group is, you can enjoy the festive celebrations, and we’re also planning a series of Quiz Nights.” The warm and relaxed ambience of the hotel makes it a popular choice as a wedding venue, and The Birch will be hosting a Wedding Fair on 22nd September, with 40 exhibitors and the opportunity to win a wedding! All these developments make this an exciting time for The Birch, but perhaps Neil’s most heartfelt project is the new management training scheme. “I want four trainees to benefit from the type of training I received, so they get a thorough grounding in the trade and, after two years, become a manager. There’s nothing as satisfying as seeing your team develop and mature. This is the hotel where I plan to settle.”

Sunshine Drinks

Mixing your own drinks

will add a personal touch to any garden party or summer picnic. Much healthier than commercially produced beverages, these summer sips take minutes to make and taste fantastic.

Iced Mint Green Tea serves 4 It is said that tea is the most refreshing drink. Step it up with this natural thirst quencher.

10g fresh mint leaves 3 green tea bags 2 tbsp honey (optional)

750ml boiling water 1 large handful of ice cubes 1 lemon

Put mint, tea and honey (if using) into a heatproof jug and cover with boiling water. Remove tea bags after 5 minutes and put the tea in the fridge until well chilled. Pour over ice cubes into a glass jug and serve with lemon slices.

Very Pink Lemonade serves 8 The essence of summer in a glass: Watermelon, strawberry and a burst of lemon.

1 watermelon 150g ripe strawberries 100ml freshly squeezed lemon juice

100g caster sugar 700ml water

Cube the melon and remove the seeds. Hull the strawberries. Put the fruit into a blender with the lemon juice, sugar and water and blitz until smooth. Serve over ice.

Cucumber Cooler serves 4 Keep cool all summer long with this green power punch. Swap the sugar for a little grated ginger, if you dare!

3 cucumbers, peeled and cubed 200ml water pinch of salt lots of ice

1 bunch of fresh mint or basil (keep some leaves for decoration) 2 limes Caster sugar to taste

Blend the cucumber, water and salt until smooth. Add ice cubes, mint/basil and blend until nice and slushy. Add the juice of one lime and sweeten to taste. Serve in individual glasses with a herb sprig and a slice of lime.

Virgin Sangria serves 4 Pretend you’re on the Spanish Costa with this zesty summer classic.

2 apples 5 oranges 2 limes 2 lemons

1.5 litres of red grape juice 100g caster sugar (optional, especially if you’re using sweetened grape juice) Lots of ice

Chop up the apples and two of the oranges and put into a 2.5l jug or bowl. Add sugar and grape juice, then juice the remainder of the fruit and stir into the jug. Chill well and add ice cubes when ready to serve.

SuSSex Living August 2013

An Italian family who are visiting Hurstpierpoint this summer asked me to write them some notes on how to get the most out of their stay. I enjoy living here so much that I thought it would be a simple task, until I realised how much insider knowledge you need to really appreciate the area. For example, they are very keen to visit London, but while I could reassure them about the excellent train links, I couldn’t explain the fare structure – well, nobody can, to be honest! Better, I thought, to concentrate on the little known gems, the off-the-beaten-path joys of Mid Sussex. “You’ll enjoy the church bells,’ I wrote. ‘As luck would have it, on one Saturday during your stay, the bells in the church next door to where you’re staying will be rung continuously for three hours. So try not to miss that. And the following day,’ I went on, ‘you might like to join the local tradition of going to a car boot sale after church. There are any number in the county,’ I said, ‘and lively affairs they are too, if not exactly rustic.’ I told them about our market towns, about walking on the Downs and strolling by our rivers, about gardens, country houses and castles to visit. I guided them to my favourite pubs and offered them thoughts on the surprisingly comprehensive range of items to be purchased in our garden centres. I wrote of beaches and cliffs, the more eccentric parts of Brighton and their even more eccentric inhabitants. Finally, I realised that I might have made it all seem a bit action-packed, so I told them where to watch some village cricket as an antidote to all the excitement. I like to think that, on their return to Italy, they will tell their disbelieving friends of a game where both teams wear the same uniform and the players stop for tea at half-time. www.sussexliving.com

Dear Sussex Living… … Within a year of advertising with Sussex Living magazine, we have had an increase of 50% of new customers. Thank you Sussex Living! Barry Williams Clayton & Keymer Royal British Legion, Hassocks … Many thanks for the article about Hurstwood Park in the July issue – it was very good. Please pass on my personal thanks to Roger Linn and your team. Brian Gubbin, League of Friends of Hurstwood Park … On behalf of the committee and everyone at St Peter & St Paul, thank you. I know that your advert was invaluable to the success of our fete held at the beginning of June, and we are very grateful. Vicky Pugin St Peter & St Paul Old Town Church Fete, Lingfield … Thanks for your article in Sussex Living reviewing my book ‘Old West Hoathly’, which gave me such good publicity last October. Although sales have exceeded expectations, copies are still available. I am now well in profit and £1,000 has already been donated to the Priest House Museum in West Hoathly. The book has led to many contacts, which have resulted in much new local history material. Thanks again for your excellent magazine and keep up the good work. Dr John Ralph, West Hoathly …We have benefited enormously by having our event included in Sussex Living. The church had over 500 visitors, many of whom said that they had seen it advertised in the magazine. We did have posters around the town but nothing so in depth as your report. Also, at our monthly meeting, we had three new members, and I always ask them where they heard about us, and two of them said through your magazine. Audrey Todd, Burgess Hill Flower Club

The

last

word

In July, we were treated to a visit to Plumpton College, organised in association with the Burgess Hill Business Parks Association. The event took place on a glorious summer evening and included a tour of the extensive estate, the surrounding countryside (with stunning views!) and some welcome hospitality, including some delicious Plumpton College wine and cheese. A thoroughly enjoyable networking event, we felt, though perhaps the visit to the cowshed at the end of a hot summery day was a little hard on the senses. We also recently attended the Haywards Heath Town Team Briefing and were impressed with the enthusiasm and positive news coming through, which seems to be giving the town a real surge of confidence. Nuffield Health’s Andrew Lennox reported his Board’s commitment to continued investment in the town, and they recently bought a £64,000 image intensifier to expand the hospitals’ pain management and spinal surgery practices. What’s more, Andrew has been asked to review the possibility of offering more diagnostic and other potential new services in the town. On the retail front, we’re told that the first phase of The Orchards Shopping Centre redevelopment is to be completed by the end of the year, with many prospective tenants waiting in the wings. All of this sounds like great news for Haywards Heath, and we’ll be bringing you more news as we get it next month. But the highlight of the month was undoubtedly Peter André and Katherine Jenkins performing on consecutive nights at Victoria Park, Haywards Heath. Many thanks to Tim French of It’s Magic Events for putting on a fanatastic show for the local community, and for being so wonderfully generous with his tickets! It was lovely to catch up with Gill Cronin, the outgoing Head of Fundraising at St Peter & St James Hospice, who had her leaving drinks at The Cock Inn, Wivelsfield. We wish her the best of luck for the future. Talking of leaving, we say goodbye to our very own Suzi Reeve who will be taking up a post at Sussex Police. Over the last 4 1/2 years, Suzi has worked in our sales, distribution and editorial departments, and has matured into an astute online and offline communications professional whose contribution to Sussex Living will be sorely missed! We wish her every success in her new career.
