Editor’s comment Welcome to the August issue of Sussex Living. With the weather continuing to bring us warm, sunny days, there’s a definite holiday vibe in the air – and very nice it is too. Of course, not everyone is in a position to take a break from normal life and enjoy a change of scenery, which is why charities such as CCHF–All About Kids are so important. Lisa de Silva went to see them at Stafford House, Keymer, and found out why and how they provide much needed holidays for disadvantaged children. And if you can help in any way with donations of needed items or indeed your time, you can be sure of a warm welcome. Pages 46-47 have all the details. Homes and gardens are important to us all – but what about the wider implications of how we run our homes? In a bid to discover how to make our houses more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable, we take a look at two families in Mid Sussex who have done just that – and with spectacular results (pages 6-11). Check out the cutest guinea pigs you ever saw on pages 31-34. If you think you might like one (or two? They’re very social little creatures!) as a family pet, I urge you to find out as much as you can about these furry funsters to make sure they’re right for you before you commit. Rescue charities such as Palace Piggie Rescue and Pooh Piglet Corner provide lots of free advice and should be your first port of call.
As we commemorate World War One, Ruth Lawrence visited Cuckfield Museum’s current exhibition ‘Small Town at War’. If ever you needed a reminder of the life-changing impact this global conflict had on a human scale, read pages 5052. Then take a few moments for quiet reflection, perhaps lighting a candle in remembrance. And while we’re on the subject of history, why not refresh your knowledge of what happened in the early part of the 20th century and pit your wits against our Poppyfield Quiz (pages 55-56)? As always, there are three prizes to be won, courtesy of our generous advertisers. On a personal note, I would like to thank all Sussex Living supporters for making this magazine such a pleasure to put together every month. I hope you will continue to enjoy all that Mid Sussex has to offer – and keep reading all about it in Sussex Living magazine!

Two local family homes have taken home improvements to a higher level.
Give your home a
new energy
boost!
You’ve read the statistics, seen advertisements for solar panels and ground source heat pumps, but what’s the reality of making your home more energy efficient? In a bid to dramatically reduce their carbon footprint, two Mid Sussex home owners took the plunge and retro-fitted their homes. Peter and Brenda Martin decided to buy ‘Northfields’ in Chailey because of its two-acre garden and sense of potential. They had taken master classes in rainwater harvesting and ground source heating, so were well prepared for the fiveyear plan to realise their eco-home dream.

SuSSex Living August 2014
The couple carried out most of the work themselves, hiring someone with a 3-tonne digger to carve out the meter-deep trenches required to sink nearly half a mile of pipe under the earth. That process took three weeks but by the following year, the reseeded lawn had grown to cover the entire disturbance. It cost £2,000 plus 20 tonnes of sand costing £500. The heat exchanger itself requires a shed-sized space and cost £11,000 plus £5,000 for plumbing. This is obviously a long-term investment but, already, the benefits are noticeable. continued on page 8

“The temperature is always a steady 21 degrees, converted from just 4 degrees of ground heat,” Peter told me. “It can’t be switched off and, whether summer or winter, it always feels just right.” They installed a woodburning stove, mainly for the cosy appearance on grey days but found they’ve only used it a handful of times. The only cost now is the electricity to run the system and the payback time is estimated to be seven years, which is impressive. Being able to use rainwater was a prime objective for Peter and Brenda. They decided to install a 3,300-litre tank under the lawn to collect rainwater from the house and garage. It’s used for flushing toilets and filling the washing machine, while all showers, the dishwasher and drinking water still comes from the mains supply. Rainwater, being soft, doesn’t cause hard water build-up or staining on ceramic surfaces. Solar panels were the next big decision. Two sets of panels – 28 in total – provide much of the couple’s electricity needs. The new set of 8 panels on the garage has its own converter and is more efficient than the others. LED low-voltage lights complete the

eco-credentials of Peter and Brenda’s home. A recent EPC rating gave Northfields an ‘A’ rating with an almost perfect 98% efficiency. Having started life as a mid-1960’s bungalow, this is a spectacular result. The original Crittall metal-framed windows were replaced by double-glazing, while underfloor insulation added to the overall efficiency. The garden, which is all Brenda’s work, carries on the self-sufficient ideal. A reinstated orchard, vegetable plot and berries galore provide much of Peter and Brenda’s fruit and vegetable needs. Herb and flower gardens that appeal to bees as much as the eye and an intimate circular ‘room’ garden give a beautiful and restful impression, concealing the labyrinth of pipework that runs underground. I asked Peter if he’d do it all again and he nodded. “Definitely. It’s a big commitment but it’s the best heating I’ve ever had.” Peter and Brenda’s refitted home is ultra-efficient, beautiful and a pleasure to inhabit. What more could anyone ask of a home? Their garden will be open for charity at the end of next May, so make a date in your diary. continued on page 10

In 2007, Chris and Hilary Handel (pictured right) moved down from London and bought a tired 1920s bungalow in Hassocks. It was leaky, cold and poorly insulated and they’d bought it primarily for the view and large garden. The house provided the perfect project for Chris to demonstrate his interest in the effects of climate change and how we can all reduce our emissions to collectively make a real difference. Within six months of moving and aided by an architect, the couple had decided to drastically improve their existing home instead of having to find the funds to demolish it and rebuild. Chris and Hilary spent £20,000 to make ‘Hillcrest’ super insulated, energy efficient and airtight, converting the loft using Celotex, which was also installed under the downstairs floor to make massive savings in energy bills. Solar thermal hot water heating tubes were fitted to the roof and they built an innovative canopy in the garden, incorporating 12 solar panels, which produce 50% more electricity than the family needs. A smart meter tells them how much energy is produced and makes the benefits visible throughout the year. A 6kW woodburning stove provides winter heat and a stunning focal point in the living room, while LED lights throughout reduce energy consumption even further. An ‘A’-rated boiler and timers that control devices on standby help cut both consumption and emissions. Chris has learned that greening your home doesn’t involve self-sacrifice. On the contrary, “it makes your home far nicer to live in while improving your quality of life,” he told me.

Chris has become heavily involved in the ethos of the Energy Saving Trust; his home is one of 180 homes nationwide who qualify as ‘superhomes’ because of their exceptionally low carbon footprint and energy efficiency. The Trust gives advice, support, a forum and links to local groups and open houses; you can even arrange an appointment to visit ‘Hillcrest’ and other participating houses through the site (www. superhomes.org.uk). After seeing the bursting fruit and veg beds, the happily foraging hens, plentiful orchard and stunning wildflower meadow in the back garden, it was obvious that the Handels relish their more selfsufficient life and the links it has brought them in the community. Chris is involved with HKD Energy, a local initiative which promotes renewable energy wherever possible. As for return on investment, Chris and Hilary have saved over a thousand pounds in the first 6 months of this year alone – which goes to show how quickly the benefits can add up once you’ve decided to go green. Saving money is often the prime motivation that inspires people to begin their journey towards energy efficiency. However, the long-term benefits reach immeasurably further, creating homes that are also warmer, quieter, more beautiful and simply better.

Tips for a greener home Boost your eco-credentials and bolster your bank account by thinking green.
Saving money, cutting your carbon footprint, increasing the value of your home, improving your health, leading a healthier lifestyle – there are plenty of reasons to make your home more environmentally friendly. A commitment to renewable energy resources, such as installing solar panels, ground source heating or a rainwater collection system, can generate longterm financial returns, but even small changes can pay big dividends. Going green is often just a case of picking up some positive habits.
Make the cut
The first step towards a greener home is simply to use less energy. Turning lights off when you leave a room, taking a shower instead of a bath and turning the thermostat down just a few degrees are all small changes that can have a big impact on your utility bills. Try to avoid leaving appliances on standby and wherever possible use cooler, shorter settings on your dishwasher and washing machine. Even doing your washing up in a bowl rather than leaving the tap running can save you money – more than £30 per year, according to the Energy Saving Trust! continued on page 14

Fill those gaps
Nobody wants to live in a freezing house, but heating bills are a major cost for many households. Stay snug without a thermostat hike by getting your DIY hat on and insulating doors and windows. Sealing your skirting boards with silicone sealant can help too, as can fitting a chimney draught excluder or sealed fireguards. If you’re happy to take on a bigger project, then adding cavity wall and loft insulation to your home could save you a significant amount on your heating bills.
Turn the thermostat down a few degrees ; use cooler, shorter settings on your washing machine Go-go-gadgets
There are plenty of products out there designed to help you live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. One of the best (and least costly) investments you can make is a box of energy-saving light bulbs. Recent technological innovations mean that flickering, slowto-glow bulbs are a thing of the past. Nowadays, eco bulbs are virtually indistinguishable from their energy-guzzling counterparts. Plug-in energy monitors cost less than £50, and studies have shown that they can help households cut their energy usage by up to 15%.
Recycle your waste
Recycling used waste is one of the best ways to do your bit for the environment, but sometimes it can seem like more hassle than it’s worth. Fortunately, Mid Sussex has a straightforward and very successful recycling operation. Around 45% of waste collected from residents around the area is recycled, and every household is entitled to a blue-lidded wheelie bin that is emptied every two weeks. Larger items can be recycled at Household Waste Recycling Sites in East Grinstead, Horsham, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath. For a small annual subscription, the council even offers a green bin – a kerbside collection service for garden waste. Going green at home may be the best thing you’ve ever done. Not only will you be saving money by making your home more sustainable, you’ll be feeling good about saving the planet too.

Save on bills and bring stylish design into your home with Bolney Stoves. With their impeccable service and installation, the hardest part is choosing.
Paul Labus founded Bolney Stoves Ltd 27 years ago because he thought wood-burning stoves were beautiful, practical and, if he’s being perfectly honest, he’ll tell you that he just loved the idea of them. Now he is the owner of a highly successful business, selling and installing a vast range of wood, multi-fuel and gas stoves. He is an acknowledged expert in all things stove-related. When I interviewed Paul, I had to confess that having purchased a wood-burning stove from him 15 years ago, I had become completely converted to the idea. It looks good, the burning logs smell great and, best of all, it is so warm that I can turn off my central heating. Bolney Stoves acts as a main dealer for most of the top manufacturers, with the marketleading Scandanavian Jøtul and Morsø brands, both of whom have been making stoves for around 160 years, prominently featured amongst others in the showrooms in Goddards Green. There, you’ll be amazed at the variety and range of environmentally friendly stoves on offer, from small, traditional cast-iron wood-burners, to very large free-standing stoves of great elegance. There are colour choices, timeless designs and outdoor ovens that seem to owe something to the space programme. In fact, there appears to be a stove

After the site visit, the customer receives a quote for the stove and its installation. Stoves can be delivered on a ‘supply only’ basis, but if Bolney Stoves carries out the installing work, their work is of course guaranteed.
It looks good, the burning logs smell great – best of all, I can turn off my central heating! what are they going to burn, is it going to be about lifestyle or is it purely as a heat source, do they want it to burn 24/7 throughout the winter, how big is the available space? If we’re going to offer the best advice, then we really need to know this stuff.” Having obtained all the information required to narrow the choice down, one of Paul’s team will survey the site to ensure that technically the product is the right one for the job. “This is really important,” Paul stressed. “In fact, we’ve looked at every single job we’ve ever done.”
The company provides full back-up and aftersales support and it’s easy to see why Paul is so proud of his company’s hardwon reputation for customer service.

A magical
woodland trail
A dozen butterflies rose into the warm summer air as i walked through a young wildflower meadow to discover the beautiful nature trail at Chelwood gate. The National Cat Centre is a wellknown charity and their grounds at Chelwood Gate are extensive. But did you know that there is also a 2km trail that winds through a magical setting of woodland, heath and lake, benefiting a host of native wildlife? I began by the water; a small lake surrounded by trees, inhabited by a family of Canada geese and Mallard ducks with a tiny jewel of an island in the centre. A path wrapping round the lake passes by a gate leading directly onto the Ashdown Forest, a haven for walkers, birdwatchers and families. The trail leads through mixed woodland; oak, providing habitat for hundreds of species, silver birch and scots pine. Tranquil sounds of birds and rustling leaves accompany the scurry of squirrels or foraging rabbits as I passed under the canopy of dappled shade – the perfect place to cool down on a hot summer day. The path turns over a brook which supplies the lake and crosses through deer territory; it’s possible to catch a glimpse of roe or fallow deer in this more hidden part of the trail. If you are lucky you may even spot an adder. This shy species is unusual in that the females do not lay eggs like other snakes but give birth to live snakes, perfect miniature replicas of their parents. The woodland floor was covered in the seed heads of bluebells at the time of my visit; the entire place must have been awash with colour in the spring. Where the path opens out onto heath, common spotted orchids stand amid the long grasses, instantly recognisable by their pale, delicately coloured

heads. As the sun blazed overhead, I dipped back into the shade and stumbled upon the ruins of the old reptile house; all that remains is the low wall of an unusually shaped building, long disused and abandoned to time and weather. An ancient yew stood beside a clearing equipped with seating for children, making an ideal space for a spot of storytelling. Moving on, I came to a recently established wildflower meadow. I’ve rarely seen so many butterflies in one place; a sure indication of a healthy habitat and fascinating for youngsters to watch as they rise up out of the grasses, always just out of reach. Bumble bees seem plentiful too; they drift from flower to flower, collecting pollen before returning to their colony where they make enough honey to feed their young. My walk was accompanied by squirrels overhead inadvertently helping to spread the woodland by their method of ‘scatter hoarding’. They bury seeds

for future consumption but as they always bury more than they need, many seedlings germinate during summer. Some bird species such as jays do this too and as they forget where they bury some of their cache, they indirectly plant more trees. You may hear the drum of a great spotted woodpecker emerging from the canopy; it’s a loud, unmistakeable sound that identifies them to other woodpeckers and defines their territory. If you hear a cackling laugh instead, it could be a green woodpecker, or ‘yaffle’, its colloquial name giving a clue as to its distinctive call. As I made my way back to the car park, I noticed a small herd of dark brown sheep with down turned horns; these are Hebridean sheep that belong to the conservators of Ashdown Forest to nibble the short turf and prevent it reverting to scrub. The nature trail is a series of ecosystems in miniature; wetland, water, woodland, meadow and heath, all coexisting in one wildlife rich habitat. The ideal place to wander, picnic or watch out for native creatures, it’s a place I’ll definitely revisit to watch the changing seasons and the evolution of a small piece of paradise.

Craft a Rustic Oak Bench Make a lasting piece of
After a day spent toiling in the garden, one of the most rewarding moments is when you sit back and admire the result of your efforts; the slow unwinding of aching muscles and a tangible reward in front of your eyes. If you find yourself sitting on a rickety old bench, perhaps inherited from the previous occupants and slowly succumbing to rot, maybe it’s time to turn your attention to your seating. Garden benches seem to be mostly of a traditional

something natural, simple and practical with minimal skills. design that hasn’t altered much in decades while the alternative is often prohibitively expensive, so why not make your own? This can be simple, affordable and completely unique. After my ancient bench had finally snapped in one too many places, I decided to construct something robust and lasting. Oak seems the ideal wood, it’s beautiful and blends seamlessly into its surroundings, particularly if sited under a sheltering tree. I found a long wavy edged piece of oak in a wood yard, about six feet long, with the bark edge

garden furniture, then sit back and have a well-earned rest.
still visible along each side. Personally, I like to see wood that still has its ‘skin’ showing; it fits in with surrounding trees and gives it a natural appearance. I also selected an oak block; heavy enough to act as a support and the right height for a seat. It was cut square, which saved having to trim it later. With these two pieces of wood, all I had to do was cut the long piece to leave enough for a second support at the other end to the block. That done, I just placed the wavy edged piece on the block and fixed it down with three long brass screws, leaving a few inches protruding over each edge. Then, I attached the remainder of the long piece to act as the second leg of the bench. Either you can screw this directly to the seat or use brackets underneath as I did, so that the fixings are invisible from above. This very basic but workable design can be applied to virtually any plank/support combination. A discarded stump could act as support; an old house beam found on a skip could be the seat. It’s really about using the materials that are available to make something natural, simple and practical with minimal skills. Then, after an afternoon’s labour in the garden, you can sit back for a well-earned rest on your very own individual handmade bench. www.sussexliving.com

LOCAL Ditchling Players The autumn production for the Ditchling Players will be ‘The Nightingales’, a show business comedy by Peter Quilter on 5-8th November 2014. Set in the 1950’s in the home of a cabaret star, Jack (40/50’s), the rhythm of his comfortable life is disturbed by the unexpected arrival of his parents, Charlie (60/70’s) and Beatrice (60/70’s), old Music Hall stars who announce they can only stay until Christmas and it’s January 7th! Beatrice then disappears and the underlying tale of Charlie and Beatrice gradually unfolds. Jack has not recognised true love, so into this charming glimpse of life with an eccentric family is woven the ‘will–they– won’t–they’ path of Jack and his stage partner, Maggie (40/50’s) which will, hopefully, have a happy ending.

people are currently waiting for an organ transplant to save or radically improve their lives, and many more require tissue transplants. With people living longer than ever before and continuous medical advances, the need for transplants is set to rise even higher over the next few years. Without increased awareness, education and research more and more people will needlessly die waiting. The aim of the charity Live Life then Give Life is to save and improve the lives of people waiting on the transplant list. It helps to improve awareness and education of organ donation and funds projects that increase the amount of successful transplants in the UK. The event is being held at Mid Sussex Golf Club, Ditchling on 24th August, from 7pm. Tickets are £30 each. For more information please contact redhotlifegiving2014@gmail. com. Defibrillator for Hurstpierpoint Hurstpierpoint Bowls Club has recently arranged for a defibrillator to be installed at the club. This was possible as a result of the generosity of members donating around £1,500. The cabinet housing the defibrillator has been sited outside the Bowls Club in South Avenue, thus enabling its availability to the general public and the Ambulance Service. Gill Welsh, a former Responder and current member of the Bowls club, has been instrumental in arranging for the defibrillator to be provided through the South East Ambulance Service. This Service also provided several excellent training sessions which were
led by Derek Middlehurst and Dan Harvey (both pictured with Gill Welsh and John Wilkinson, Chairman of Hurstpierpoint Parish Council). The Ambulance Service will be responsible for maintenance which includes replacement of items such as batteries and pads whenever necessary. The Bowls Club will provide the electrical power to the cabinet to keep the equipment at a working temperature throughout the year.

OPiniOn
I’m not a very ‘horsey’ person, but I do enjoy Hickstead, especially when I can use the free entry pass kindly offered to all readers of Sussex Living. I think it’s because I love enthusiasts and the Hickstead meeting is so packed with them, it’s as though everybody you meet has just received some unexpectedly good, or odd, news. I mean, where else on Earth can you overhear one side of a mobile phone conversation which contains the phrase “she goes just as well off either leg”? The place is simply buzzing with activity and the cheerful milling crowds have an exotic, if rural mix. There are giggling girls going through the simplymad-for-ponies stage, perspiring gentlemen wearing tweed suits thick enough to stop a bullet, superstars of the show jumping world, harassed grooms and ice-cream eating families. Of course, there are horses of every sort – from statuesque, haughty beasts who know their worth, to matching pairs of ponies small enough to use as bookends. The Shopping Village offers opportunities that don’t come along every day. Where else would someone offer you a deal on something that sounded like an ‘electronic equine fetlock indicator’? As I have no idea what such a thing is or could do, I don’t know whether it was a bargain or not, so I didn’t buy one. I was, however, more than tempted by what is, in my view, the ultimate product of the 21st century: zip-up Wellington boots! Regular readers of this column will know that I’ve had difficulties with rubberised footwear in the past, so these revolutionary wellies will change my life. No more pulled calf muscles trying to remove them, and no more abruptly sitting down because one has bent in the middle when I’m trying to put it on. Now step in, zip up and go. Amidst all this excitement, I almost forgot to mention the breathtaking events in the main show jumping arena where you can watch horses and riders in such perfect harmony as to seem like a single animal. Their race against time over fences demands courage, skill and the seeming ability to defy gravity. Awesome!

August is a sleepy month in the garden
making it an ideal time to plan for the future.
Let’s get cutting!
Blooming Times On the veg patch, What to do in the garden now? It’s a funny time of year: too late for summer bedding, too early to consider autumn pansies and suchlike. However (elderly maiden aunts put down your ear trumpets and look away now), August is a brilliant month for reproduction. I am, of course, talking about cuttings. In August there is little variation between day and night time temperatures – this provides ideal growing conditions. Many perennials, including dianthus, hebes, fuchsias, penstemons and shrubby herbs such as thyme, lavender, rosemary and sage can be propagated by cuttings now. Your cuttings need to be made from non-flowering shoots. The shoots should be young, but not soft and sappy. Cut just below a leaf joint, making cuttings approximately 6-10cm in length. Pull off the lower leaves and insert the cuttings halfway into pots of gritty compost. Water well and stand them in a warm but not too sunny position. They will root quickly and can soon be potted on individually. Spring flowering shrubs such as rhododendrons, magnolias and camellias can be propagated using a ‘layering’ method. The method is easy but success depends on choosing the right plant material. Select a low-growing stem that is mature but shows a good amount of new growth (the paler green/brown growing tip will indicate this) and is sufficiently bendy to touch the ground. Use bricks, stones or
28
SuSSex Living August 2014
check strawberries for potential new plants. utilise a wire coat hanger bent into ‘hairpins’ to secure the stem along the ground and water well. A mulch of leaf mould is useful; the aim is to keep the surrounding soil moist at all times. Check every month or so, even in the depths of winter, for a secure stem and moist soil. After a year has passed (I only said it was easy, not quick!), pull gently at the stem to check if it’s rooted. If so, it can be carefully dug up and cut away from the parent plant. Some varieties are more suited to layering in August, others will prefer April or May. Keep experimenting and you are bound to be successful. On the veg patch, check strawberries for potential new plants. After fruiting, mature strawberry plants produce ‘runners’ – tiny plantlets growing on long stems. As before, use stones or hairpins to secure them to the ground. They will root quickly. Within a month you should be able to lift them and separate ‘mother’ and ‘baby’, replacing old tired plants with vigorous offspring. They will continue growing throughout the autumn, making strong plants that will crop well for you next year.

This little piggy went...
all the way home Small and cuddly, fluffy and squeaky – guinea pigs can make ideal first pets.
Guinea pigs are adorable little creatures. No wonder, then, that they are popular pets for children and adults alike. But researching this Peruvian native species brought me into contact with people on the front line of guinea pig rescue, unfortunately a much needed service. Lack of information is the reason why rescue centres are full to capacity. Guinea pigs, or cavies, are worryingly easy to buy, often in an irresponsible way from sellers more concerned with money than the welfare of this surprisingly delicate animal. I visited Pauline Dutton from Pooh Piglet Corner in Haywards Heath to meet 120 guinea pigs abandoned by their initially well-meaning owners. “People buy a pair from a pet shop without knowing the sex or whether they will bond,” Pauline told me as I stroked an irresistible youngster. It’s this universal appeal which causes such problems: children fall in love with a cute little face or a pleasing colour and unsuitable animals are forced to live together, often
resulting in unwanted litters or fighting. Females can remain constantly pregnant if left with an unneutered male; they produce 3-4 babies in one litter and can become pregnant at four weeks old, when they can be damaged by giving birth. Males make surprisingly good foster ‘uncles’, nurturing rescued babies while mentoring them; this gives a clue to the sensitive nature of the breed. Bonded males can live together happily as can groups of carefully introduced girls, although a neutered male can work wonders at stopping fighting between a pack of girls. They all prefer company, but it must be thoughtfully introduced as the wrong companion will be just as damaging as two humans who don’t get along. Pauline confided that guinea pigs sometimes become the unwitting victims to animal hoarders; she has dealt with rescues where over 200 have been liberated from a single, overwhelmed owner. continued on page 32

Pauline won’t re-home a guinea pig unless she feels certain that a responsible adult will care for it over its lifespan, which can be more than 5 years. Children may convince a parent they will look after their pet diligently but, ultimately, an adult will always end up having to take responsibility and this is the main reason why so many animals are abandoned. Pauline set up the rescue centre 15 years ago; she gives free advice and offers a 6-month care package with all re-homed guinea pigs. As we talked, we were surrounded by the gentle vocalisations of these communicative animals. Guinea pigs have a wide range of calls, indicating contentment, fear, happiness, aggression and greeting. They love to feast on chicory, cucumber and special mixes of seeds, grasses and pellets.

“People often think guinea pigs can share food and space with rabbits,” Pauline told me, “but they have very different diets and social needs.” Unlike rabbits, they can’t live outside without a secure, warm shelter as they have hair instead of insulating fur. They must not go out on wet grass; and in winter must be brought into a house or shed. Pauline’s dedication means that she incurs large overheads in caring for other people’s abandoned guinea pigs and she welcomes donations of money, specific foods, cages, towels and wood shavings for bedding. Her love for the rescued guinea pigs is obvious. As she handed me a captivating little female, I realised how the qualities that make them such a popular fi rst pet also make them highly vulnerable to abandonment. It’s a sad reflection that another two guinea pig rescue centres are based in nearby Crawley.
I visited Palace Piggie Rescue to meet Lynn Coulbeck and Liz Hopper who are both opposed to breeding when so many rescue animals are waiting for loving homes. Keen to assure potential adopters that they are never on their own, Lynn and Liz dispense advice throughout the guinea pig’s life, in stark contrast to some pet shops who may simply want to sell an animal to an adoring child. “A guinea pig is not a toy or a gimmick,” Lynn said. “They have lives and enjoy interaction, company and plenty of safe space.” Cages should be continued on page 34

at least 4 by 2 feet in size for a pair of guinea pigs and extra animals require another square foot each. The centre’s most elderly resident, ‘Old Codger’, is still going strong at 10 years of age. “We get attached to individuals,” admitted Liz, “they squeak when they hear their owner’s voice”. If your child wants a guinea pig, make sure that an adult will commit to its care and welfare for the duration of its life. Take advantage of the support offered by a rescue centre and give an abandoned animal a fresh start. You can take a bonded pair of youngsters who will remain close and affectionate with each other, secure in the knowledge that you are, in Lynn’s words, “part of the solution, by adopting and not buying.”

Palace Piggie Rescue always welcomes donations, newspapers for bedding and the great essential: bin liners. Guinea pig rescue on this scale requires serious funds, time, energy and dedication. Giving a pet a new home is a deeply rewarding experience and potential adopters can be reassured that they will have access to support along the journey. The guinea pigs I met at Pooh Piglet Corner and Palace Piggie Rescue are the lucky ones – the vocal squeaks and chatter communicate their contentment as they wait to find their forever homes.

When the time comes
Vets2Home’s 24/7 geriatric and palliative home care service helps owners make the right decision at the right time for themselves and for their ailing pet by Susan Gregersen, Senior Vet & Founder, Vets2Home Veterinary Service
Kono, 8, collapsed at home.
Kono, the handsome wolf hybrid in his prime.
When a pet is diagnosed with a terminal illness, or when age begins to affect its body and mind, owners have difficult decisions to make. Like people, sick animals need a lot of care and attention if they are not to suffer before they die naturally or are put to sleep. Kono, a large wolf hybrid, was imported by his owners, Robin and Dona RocheTarry, when they moved from the USA to Brighton in 2004. He was probably the only “part wolf-part dog’ pet at the time. Many years later, when he was getting older, Kono suddenly became severely lame, so one Saturday they contacted Susan Gregersen, founder of Vets2Home, to come out and see him at home. A few weeks of treatment and pain relief resulted in little improvement but then referral to a local practice for tests and X-rays revealed he had terminal bone cancer. Realising Kono was going to need special veterinary care and good pain relief, the Roche-Tarry’s decided to use Vets2Home’s end-of-life support service and later, when he was no longer comfortable on heavy pain relief, their gentle in-home euthanasia. Kono was much loved, and various members of the family flew in from the States and Spain to say goodbye. Late one evening, before he was in too much pain, Susan sedated Kono and he was quietly put to sleep in his own home. As it happened, the gathered family celebrated his memorable character and life with glasses of champagne. ‘Kono was a part of our family and a unique and special animal,’ says Dona Roche-Tarry. ‘He was shy and not used
to being around people, so taking him to a vet was an anxious experience for us all. Because of the service provided by Vets2Home we were able to treat him and keep him calm and happy in his last few months. The decision to put a dog down is extremely difficult, especially when you have to take him to a hospital-type environment. We were able to say our private goodbyes and stay with him until the end. ‘Vets2Home also provided help with the special cremation, which was really important to us. Vets2Home is a great service and the professionalism and care the staff provide is exceptional.’ Vets2Home’s Chief Vet, Susan Gregersen, recently brought the idea of animal home geriatric and hospice care from the USA to Britain. ‘We’re here to help animals at all hours of the day and night throughout Sussex and on the Kent/Surrey borders,’ says Susan. ‘We’ll tailor-make a care plan for your special furry family member, so he or she can be pain-free through to a natural or much more often, a peaceful assisted end. This is more than possible at home and the best way to give a pet individual treatment in a comfortable setting and familiar environment. Owners such as Kono’s play an important part in a pet hospice situation, and care focuses on pain control and comfort for the animal as well as on 24-hour advice and support for the family when the end is approaching.’ Susan says she has had too many requests to put down a pet that clearly still enjoys life
Susan Gregersen DVM, MBA, MRCVS – with Spud, her 8 year old rescue cat
and is not yet suffering, but the owner simply can’t bear the unknown. ‘Fear is the number one reason people choose euthanasia too early,’ she says. ‘If owners make this choice because they don’t know what to expect or how to deal with the situation, they may miss out on the intimate and often emotionally healing process of final-stage care for their pets. Gentle home euthanasia is available at any stage, as long as the owner feels prepared and is ready for it. The gratitude of my clients that the death of their much-loved pet could take place so peacefully without pain and hurry, in their own home, speaks for itself.’ The price for an unhurried geriatric home vet consultation (day, evening and weekends) is £125 and advice by telephone is given 24/7 at no charge. For further information contact www.vets2home.co.uk, email contact@vets2home.co.uk or ring for an informal chat 07962 423567.

Scaynes Hill Walk
Join us on this short walk through Weald countryside around Scaynes Hill.
From the small car park at Scaynes Hill Common, return to the A272 and cross to the Inn on the Green opposite. Keep the pond to your left and almost at the entrance to the pub, turn right on a signed path. Follow this path between houses, crossing two estate roads. Ignore the path off to your right. On reaching a junction of tracks, take the one signed to Ham Lane Farm. Follow this tarmac track, which drops slightly downhill, and just past the entrance to Awbrook Park Farm, take a signed path on your left, surfaced with wood chippings. The path climbs uphill to cross a track coming in from your right, and you should carry on ahead on a grassy path. At the top of the field, pass through a small dell and a kissing gate. The path follows along a left-hand field edge, going over two stiles to join a tarmac drive by a gate and a stile. Turn left and follow this drive out
to join the A272. On reaching the A272, turn left for about 200 yards, then cross the road with great care to the signed path opposite. When doing the survey for this walk, the entrance to the path was extremely muddy so please be prepared! Go through a gate and follow the path around a clump of trees then bear right on an obvious path towards distant buildings. On reaching the dwelling at Pellingbridge Farm, turn left in front of a large barn to the clearly signed path ahead. Follow this path along a left-hand field edge to bear slightly right to a stile. Go over this, then immediately left through a gap in the hedge and follow up a left-hand field edge towards Great Wood. At the top of the field, go over a rather awkward stile and fork immediately right into Great Wood continued on page 40 SuSSex Living August 2014

and follow the narrow path that meanders through the wood. On reaching a junction of paths, bear left downhill and at the bottom, go right along the valley and, at the next signpost, go left uphill to join a track at Hammond’s Farm. The path you are following between Great Wood and Hammond’s Farm is not as shown on the Ordnance Survey map, but it is the signed and used route that has been in existence for many years. Once on the tarmac track by Hammond’s Farm, go left and follow Clearwater Lane for a little under a mile to the A272 opposite the Inn on the Green. Turn right and then right again into Church Lane for the car park on Scaynes Hill Common. DISTANCE:

Summer is made for flat shoes.
Flip flops, espadrilles, sandals… effortless
beach chic simply doesn’t happen in stilettos.
MIRROR MIRROR MIRROR on the wall...
When was the last time you spent any length of time in high heels? Daytime at the office? A night out with the girls? A hot date perhaps? You may have looked hot to trot but, if you’re anything like me, I bet you were nursing your aching feet when you got home. Which begs the question: how far would you push your boundaries in the name of fashion? It’s a huge question and one that, luckily, we don’t have to answer today because: flats are back! The high street is now awash with low (or no-) heeled footwear of every style and material imaginable. Going shoe shopping recently, I felt like a kid in a sweet shop: colour popping pumps and plimsoles, bejewelled Fit Flops, pointy loafers, leather trainers, pastel brogues, ankle strap sandals, playful jelly shoes…. the choice of pretty, wearable shoes on offer this summer is simply staggering. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that flats should be popular during the holiday season. A relaxed, outdoorsy summer vibe – can you even do that in heels? Walking along the beach, exploring the countryside, cycling, sightseeing… I can’t imagine that any of these would be particularly enjoyable (or even doable!) tottering along in 4-inch heels. It’s not often that style and wearability come together in the world of haute couture when, normally, never the twain shall meet. Blahnik vs Birkenstock, Louboutin vs Doc Martens – you see the problem.

Goodbye to Monroestyle shimmying and hello to effortless cool in shoes that don’t restrict who we can be.
So the fact that footwear fashion is moving away from dizzy heights and arriving at ground control is surely something to be celebrated. Goodbye to Monroe-style shimmying and all the outdated imagery that goes with it. Hello to effortless cool in shoes that don’t restrict who we can be. This summer, you can wear flats anywhere, with anything and without apology – and look bang on trend: Team with skirts of any length, rolled up jeans, cropped trousers, summer dresses. Give a modern edge to officewear, partywear, homewear. Hop, jump and skip for joy – because you can!

New Smiles Ahead
With a new surgery, outreach programme and full dental services now on offer, Martin and Janet ellis are diversifying their business. But rest assured, the friendly reputation of the Denture Care Centre is here to stay.
Janet welcomes me into their Crawley Down practice, soon to be renamed the Crawley Down Dental Care Centre. With coowner and husband Martin, they’re keen to show me their new surgery. “It’s the next logical step,” Janet tells me. “We started out as a dental laboratory, then took on private denture care and now we’ll be offering a full dentistry service.” The enthusiasm of Mr Harper, one of the Dental Surgeons on their team, encouraged Martin and Janet to make this move. “He is keen for the business to evolve,” she says as we step into the new, bright surgery. Fitted out to a high specification with all the latest digital equipment, it looks light and fresh - a very comfortable place to come for dental treatment. “We are very pleased with the surgery,” Janet smiles. A fully trained dental nurse will be joining their small team to assist with the new procedures on offer. They’re also aiming to keep costs down, close to NHS prices, to give patients even more choice. Along with their new surgery and spruced up practice, Martin
and Janet are now offering a new outreach programme to Nursing Homes. Martin already does home visits, with a chaperone if required, but this new programme will give a fuller service offering denture care, full dentistry and oral health checks to older patients. This is a vital service, as many older people miss the opportunity for regular dental checks and treatment. The results of this can be shocking. Janet explains that “the patient’s chance of avoiding getting caries [cavities] is only 8% because, being older, they just don’t get the care. We are out to change that. Everyone should have the choice of treatment.” The service they offer involves a comprehensive exam with particular emphasis on oral health screening to ensure continued patient health. These checks can pick up potential problems or health issues that may otherwise go unnoticed. For ease, simple treatments
can be carried out at the home by a member of their friendly team, but if needed patients can come into the practice, which has full disabled access. Many patients who come to Martin and Janet may not have seen a dentist for a long time. The reasons for this can vary, from dental phobia, to disability or travel problems and fi nance. However, with their relaxed and friendly approach to dentistry, everyone is put at ease. The whole Denture Care Centre team is keen to maintain the trust they have built with existing patients, and new patients are very welcome.

Happy Holidays for
Kids CCHF All About Kids are helping disadvantaged children enjoy a holiday, have fun and make friends.
Summer months have long been associated with holidays, trips abroad, and fun days out at the beach or in the countryside. Yet, for many vulnerable children with challenging backgrounds, these sorts of treats rarely feature in their lives. Sadly, this state of affairs is nothing new and in 1884 prompted the founding of the charity, The Children’s Country Holiday Fund (CCHF). Their aim was to help disadvantaged children escape the stresses of extreme poverty and overcrowding in the London slums.
Kids thrive here!
Even the most timid grow in confidence

Having helped over 2 million children, the charity, now known as CCHF All About Kids, is as vital now as it was in 1884. Back then the children were sent on holiday to country cottages, but over the years the charity has evolved to offer a range of residential camps, many of which take place at Stafford House in Hassocks. Today, CCHF All About Kids helps disadvantaged children of primary school age who have been referred by schools, health and social services. The children come from a variety of backgrounds, including those living in poverty or inadequate housing, those caring for a parent and those who may have experienced emotional and physical abuse or neglect. Unfortunately, crime, violence and drugs often surround them. “Our aim is to give the children some fun time in a safe place and show them that there is another world outside of the difficult one they’re living in,” explains Tracy True, Head of Finance. There are 47 breaks a year at Stafford House, which sleeps 36 children and 12 volunteers. There are cosy bedrooms with bunk beds, an activity room with table tennis and arts and crafts, a fantastic garden dotted with trampolines and an inviting dining room decorated with the children’s artwork. “Some of the children will not stand on the grass when they fi rst arrive because they’ve never stood on grass before,” says Tracy. Eating is an important part of the day. “Many of the children don’t get meals at home and during the holidays lose the chance for their free school lunch. We have our own chef and all our food is nutritious and home cooked, with fruit always on the table,” explains Trust Fundraiser, Georgie Goddard. www.sussexliving.com
A typical stay at Stafford House might include a beach day, a local farm visit, swimming at the Triangle and a day enjoying arts and crafts in the garden. “They love the farm visits and talk a lot about the animals they’ve seen,” says Georgie.
We give the children a

This impact continues after the breaks, producing positive benefits both at home and school. The charity receives no funding, relying on donations and volunteers to sustain the valuable work it does. It costs £330 for each child to have a break. CCHF are celebrating their 130th anniversary with a big fundraising push so if you would like to help you can make a donation, play the charity lottery, sponsor a child, or personally fundraise. Volunteers are always needed. If you are over 18 years, with the energy and enthusiasm to make a short break fun and interesting for the children, do apply. Mini-bus drivers are also needed, so anyone living locally who would like to help would be welcome. In terms of other donations, new or good condition swimwear for 7-11 year olds is needed,
along with beach towels, new bedding and mattresses, toiletries, sun cream, wet weather gear and travel sickness tablets. And if anyone has a pedal go-kart in good working order, you can be sure it will be going to a good home. Letting kids be kids again is what this charity does best. As one happy parent says, “thank you from the bottom of our hearts, keep up the good work and well done to you all!” If you want to find out about events and services on offer, make a donation or wish to volunteer, please contact 01273 847770. www.cchf-allaboutkids.org.uk (Charity No. 206958)

Cuckfield Museum’s current exhibition
brings us closer to understanding the full impact of World War i on our homes and families.
When
war came
The scale of World War I is difficult to comprehend. Harsh statistics tell one story, yet it is individual, local experiences that show, at human scale, what happened over those four long years. Cuckfield Museum has gathered together a telling collection of deeply personal belongings that provide a microcosm of Britain at war and how it affected everyone, regardless of age, class or gender. Through everyday objects, photos and diaries, we can understand the fears, struggles and victories of people like ourselves, thrown into a situation beyond their control. A plain drawstring bag, labelled by the Red Cross wishing “Best wishes for a speedy recovery” and signed with a soldier’s name, contains memories of a young man who survived to tell his story. Fred Manvell enlisted in the Royal Sussex Pioneer Regiment aged just 17, so he could fight alongside his elder brother Ernest. Wounded three times, Fred’s regimental badges and buttons were placed with notebooks containing diary entries into the bag, popularly known as a ‘Dorothy Bag’ during his time in hospital. The bag was labelled and tied around his neck to prevent it being lost. Fred kept it intact after the war with postcards, sent by himself and Ernest,

who did not survive the conflict. Fred’s notebooks are on display and I could imagine him, so young, keeping the vital connection with home and his hoped for future by recording his experiences of daily life as a soldier. One photo of a man holding a horse gives little clue as to his life and yet next to it lay his sketchbooks, fi lled with detailed ink drawings of his time in the Royal Field Artillery. Geoffrey Squires had completed one year’s art training at Regent Street Polytechnic when he volunteered, at the age of 19, for the 2/3rd London Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. He noted that “this little book endured a lot of wear and tear during those years of war.” His lively drawings show the humour that probably got him and his mates through the grinding experiences of life on the front line. One cartoon shows round after round of ammunition falling about two soldiers, one wounded. He quips that it wasn’t shrapnel but a piece of “Xmas pudden from ‘ome” that hit him. Geoffrey completed his training after the war and became a successful illustrator and Punch cartoonist. A small purse spilling with large old copper pennies tells of how people at home could do their bit for the war effort. Called a ‘Self-Denial Purse’, it carries an explanation from the Parish Magazine from March 1916: “The Vicar has procured a number of little purses…and may be taken by any who care to do so….each purse will have a number and the contents acknowledged by the number…. the purses should be returned at Easter.” The money collected was sent to wartime charities. It gives an idea of the numerous small acts that pulled people together to help in any way possible. Even the upper classes were not exempt. An advert appeals to their sense of responsibility while
www.sussexliving.com
speaking volumes about the rigid social structures that still prevailed. “Have you a man preserving your game who should be helping to preserve your country?” it asks pointedly, under the title, “5 questions to those who employ male servants.” It’s often forgotten that many men did return. A photo taken in 1920 shows a group of regulars from The Talbot pub in Cuckfield, in fancy dress and false beards enjoying a day’s fishing. Many of the men in the photo were recorded as having returned ‘comparatively unscathed’ from war service. They sit picnicking in top hats and long coats, obviously enjoying peacetime to the full. Temporary hospitals were set up throughout the war, bringing wounded into communities from foreign fields. Queen’s Hall in Cuckfield was used as a Red Cross hospital. Initially, a dozen Belgian patients were received, followed by four more and after their discharge, the Hall was needed for troops. In July 1915, the hospital reopened with 20 beds and never closed until 18th December 1918. 1,295 patients had been treated there and photos show groups sitting with nurses, being healed in tranquil continued on page 52

While serving abroad, morale had to be boosted by connections with home and postcards were produced with messages, customised for individual towns and villages. One depicts a wife, dreaming of her husband hopefully marching to victory with the words “I am thinking of you at Cuckfield” printed above her. Another paints a wife and two young children, outlined by hearth light, titled “keeping the home fires burning”. It is testament to the reverence in which these postcards were held that so many stay intact to this day, complete with lovingly written messages from wives trying to disguise their own
lucky charms and letters show us more about the internal landscape of people in WWI than any war report or official account. From these items and words we can piece together the myriad ways in which people dealt with experiences that, hopefully, none of us will have to endure as they did. Leaving the exhibition, I returned to the world they fought to preserve. Cuckfield’s experience holds stories we should all listen to, so that we might understand and never forget.

Food Glorious Food
in the heat of summer a fresh, crisp salad hits the spot every time. Where you can, choose local seasonal ingredients to make your meals really sing! Apparently, no great story ever started with someone eating salad, as the saying goes. But don’t let that put you off – here are two super, simple and seductive summer salads.
Tomato & Basil Salad The fact that we can buy tomatoes of all shapes and sizes all year round is a pity. We very easily get used to the mediocre, and quite forget what the real thing actually tastes like. So forget the imports from afar and go for the ripest, most local you can fi nd. You’ll also need fresh basil, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a little Maldon sea salt. Quantities of these will vary depending on the number of tomatoes, which in turn will depend on the number of tomato loving people you are going to feed, how hungry they are, and what else is on the menu. For a plate of thinly sliced tomato, a tablespoon of olive oil, a dessertspoon of balsamic vinegar and a handful of torn basil with a couple of pinches of salt ought to do more than the trick. Just a word of warning when buying basil: I recently bought some with leaves as big as twopound coins and it was completely tasteless. Little and punchy will sweeten your plate. To go with this you might remember the late Frank Muir’s defi nition of the difference between wisdom and knowledge:
Knowledge tells you that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom stops
you from putting it in the fruit salad. 58

Avocado, Trout & Horseradish Salad Until recently, though I love avocados, I was very conservative about how to eat them. Avocado Vinaigrette was as far as I’d venture. Then I came across Salade Aliénor, which may or may not have been named after Eleanor of Aquitaine. Rich and powerful she may have been, but she certainly never had an avocado! As a hearty starter, you’ll need one smoked trout per person (trimmed, skinned, de-boned and shredded), 2 tablespoons of grated horseradish, at least 2 tablespoons of double cream, most of the inside of an iceberg lettuce, a good sized ripe avocado and some lemon juice. To make this simple yet tasty salad, 1. Arrange a bed of torn or finely chopped lettuce on your plate(s). 2. Skin, stone and thinly slice the avocado and arrange it on the lettuce. Sprinkle the avocado with lemon juice, not only enhancing the taste but preventing it from browning as well. 3. Distribute the trout evenly between the plates, then pour or dollop your horseradish and cream mixture on top and enjoy.

Peace of mind is something we’d all like. Luckily, the security of a
high quality alarm system
is more affordable than one might think.
Your home
in safe hands Security is something that Ian and Maureen Holt know inside out. Childhood sweethearts, they both worked for Chubb for years before setting up Holt Security Systems in 1986. Family-run and priding itself on the personal touch, Holt specialise in wirefree intruder alarm systems that create no disruption during fitting and are surprisingly cost effective. Ian ran through the benefits of the wire-free system for me: “It protects you, then phones you to say exactly where the alarm has been triggered or it informs a manned monitoring station which then calls the police.” Sound expensive? I was amazed to discover that a police call system costs from just £650 while a CCTV set-up can be installed for as little as £600. “People don’t realise how reasonable it can be,” said Maureen before adding that there is no pulling up of carpets required and no need for redecoration afterwards. “Our engineers even carry Hoovers!” Ian takes care of the free ‘no obligation’ site survey. The system can be fitted within as little as four hours, depending on urgency. If a service contract is taken out, the system is guaranteed for life. Holt Security Systems also offer maintenance contracts for existing alarm systems and carry out private and commercial work. Covering Sussex, Surrey, South London and parts of Kent, Berkshire and Hampshire, Holt adhere to their philosophy of ‘have wheels will travel’. Members of the SSAIB (Security Systems and Alarm Inspection Board) since 1994, they supply a certificate on completion that could provide discounts with insurers and proof of quality. Holt Security Systems are police recognised installers. The Quantum 70 from HKC is a superb allround system that offers perimeter and/or trap protection using contact sensors, motion detectors and shock sensors, being easily set while inside the premises. A digital communicator allows text or voice messages to a mobile phone, giving you the ability to switch the system on and off remotely. The Ezy CCTV System is named well – it is

High-definition cameras offer better quality than TV, and infrared invisible lighting offers protection up to a 30-metre range. Customers find Holt Security Systems’ attention to detail a real advantage. One lady wrote how the engineer “arrived in good time, was polite and informative, did a good job with no fuss and was a credit to the company”. Installers receive ongoing training to keep pace with new technology and give system demonstrations to their clients. Aftercare is exemplary, offering 24-hour service, maintenance and phone help included with a yearly maintenance check. Ian and Maureen Holt are Holt Security Systems extremely helpful and easy to 24 Royal George Road talk to. More than halfway into its
business tO business
10th year,
Burgess Hill Business Parks Association (BHBPA) has never been in better shape.
onwards upwards
&
With an ever-growing attendance for its networking events and membership continuing to expand, BHBPA is thriving. In May, it moved to the much larger Kings Centre for its fi fth Burgess Hill Means Business event and recorded its highest level of visitors. More than 70 exhibitors showcased their businesses, with some from as far away as Burgess Hill’s twin German town of Schmallenberg displaying everything from wine to windows, food to photography and hotels to HR. The continued success of Burgess Hill Means Business reflects BHBPA’s steady momentum – and it boasts a uniquely high retention rate. The coordinators’ popular weekly e-newsletter is an excellent vehicle for keeping everyone in touch with news and views. The Association continues to offer some of the best networking events in Mid Sussex, with further opportunities already lined up for later this year. One such chance to network over the summer is at Plumpton College – a rural centre of excellence in our community. Members have the opportunity to enjoy spectacular views from the top of the Sussex Downs, courtesy of a ride in the College minibuses, and see the latest in modern milking technology while chatting about enterprise. Of course, there’s always the delightful wine tasting after a tour of the winery – and the chance to make a purchase or two to enjoy at home. For the fi rst time in a few years, St Paul’s Catholic College will host an event later this year. The school, which moved to new premises in 2004, has been a valued member of the Association for many years and has developed close links with member companies who look to it to provide many of Burgess Hill’s future employees. BHBPA Coordinator Peter Liddell said: “As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we are delighted to see local companies succeed. The BHBPA has thrived in 2014, and I’m confident that the support

we saw for this year’s Burgess Hill Means Business will continue with our other events. “The increase in visitors mirrors a growing appetite for local commerce as people appreciate the tangible benefits of doing business locally. BHBPA remains dedicated to continuing to nurture commerce and encourage the creation of more and more meaningful relationships between local businesses.” Behind BHBPA is a dedicated Steering Group comprising key figures from in and around the town with a small board, comprising Stephen Pitt as chairman and Susan Fleet, Nicky Loutit and David Shore as Directors. Already on the cards for 2015 is the next Burgess Hill Means Business and lots more opportunities to hear about business innovations in the community as well as plenty of interesting meetings. It’s all very well minding your own business, but BHBPA has proved time and again that it’s worth getting involved in other people’s! To find out more about the Burgess Hill Business Parks Association (BHBPA), please contact Peter Liddell on tel. 07903 984 366, peter.liddell@bhbpa.co.uk www.bhbpa.co.uk

Dear Sussex Living… …I am just reading through a copy of your July issue which has a great picture of a Kingfisher on the front cover. Earlier this year, I took a picture of a dormouse in my back garden which I thought you might like and possibly consider as front cover picture of a future issue. Gareth Thomas … I have been collecting Les Campbell’s walks out of Sussex Living Magazine since October 2011 and now have a goodly collection! My rambling associates and I have done several of the walks and have always found them to be really well explained and passing through interesting and varied landscapes. Please pass my congratulations and admiration to Mr. Campbell for a job extremely well done. His walks are providing hours of pleasure to quite a few people. Alan Whyte, East Grinstead … Thank you so very much for your wonderfully positive support with publicity for our concert in Henfield Hall last Saturday 5th July. I am delighted to be able to let you know that with your support the concert was attended by over 180 people, and after Hall charges, the evening raised over 2,000 for the Macmillan Nurses Charity. A great result, and a wonderful evening enjoyed by all, with fabulous music from our guest harpist Heather Wrighton. Geoffrey James
last WORD The
With the summer holidays in full swing we hope you have a great time whatever you do this August. And of course fi ngers crossed the sun continues to shine! After many years with us we wished Nicole Tata a fond farewell on 11th July as she heads off to do a nutritional course at college in September. We wish her all the very best, and good luck! Taking over Nicole’s role as assistant editor is Sara Harman-Clarke, who we wish a very warm welcome to. She is excited to be taking on this role and already loves the Sussex Living way of life. Making the most of the sunshine, and for a very good cause, Diane enjoyed a day out at Livability, celebrating choices for disabled people. The garden party was held at the beautiful Latchetts Garden, near Dane Hill in East Sussex. There was plenty on offer with live music from three bands, lectures from leading horticulturalist, a garden quiz and plant stall, plus loads of home-made goodies to eat! With a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere it was a pleasure to wander around this large garden, which was quite breathtaking. Charlotte P has had a busy but fun month attending the Mid-Summer market in East Grinstead. The High Street was buzzing, full of stalls offering lots of tasty delights to keep the bustling crowds happy. There was entertainment for the children and adults alike, including a French singer and flashmob which got everyone, including Charlotte, dancing in the street! Keeping busy, Charlotte also attended a two day Customer Service Course which she found very informative and beneficial. We hope you all enjoy our Poppyfield Quiz this month, and want to say an enormous thank you to Rushfields Plant Centre, Ockenden Manor & Rusden’s for kindly providing the wonderful prizes. Good luck one and all! We hope that everyone who took advantage of the Hickstead free ticket offer had a really good day out and enjoyed the show jumping, along with everything else on offer there. Maybe you even got your posh hats out! Our writer Roger certainly enjoyed his day out – see his View from the Downs on page 26. Finally, on our last visit to Mum’s in early July we had the misfortune of being caught up in the French Air Traffic Control strike – what a long journey that proved to be! It was more than worth it however to see how well Mum is recovering, quite remarkable. Of course we also went to visit Banksy (the kitten) who is slowly making his way over at the moment via Portugal & France. Never was a kitten better travelled… As always, thank you to all our loyal advertisers and readers. We always appreciate your kind feedback and hope you have a lovely, sunny August.
