Welcome to the start of a brand new year, still all shiny and new and full of promise. What will you make of 2014 and, most importantly, how will you ensure this year is going to be a happy one for you? Hopefully, we might be able to give you the first nudge in the right direction, with our ‘Happiness in 2014’ feature on pages 43-45. Take just a few minutes to assess where you are now, so you’re in the frame of mind to set clear intentions for the year ahead. We sent Ruth Lawrence to investigate the history of clockmaking in the local area. She found some wonderful examples of antique clocks in Cuckfield, East Grinstead and many other villages in Mid Sussex, most of them on public display (pages 9-15). We are grateful to clockmakers John Carpenter and Sam Orr, as well as Cuckfield and East Grinstead Museums, for providing some truly fascinating information. Meanwhile, Roger Linn was curious to find out about the Mid Sussex Older People’s Council (MSOPC) and went to talk to their charismatic Chair, Barbara Baldwin. Set up in 2004 by a group of dedicated and experienced volunteers, the MSOPC acts as a powerful local

voice for and by older people, promoting and advising on a wide range of issues that affect the over-60s (pages 63-64). Hanna Lindon has been learning about the ancient art of hedgelaying (pages 35-38), a traditional craft that, apparently, anyone can have a go at. If you’re itching to get involved, do contact the South of England Hedgelaying Society who will be only pleased to advise. Closer to home, January is a great time to take stock of your immediate surroundings. For ideas on how to maximise your living space in your home and garden, see pages 24-29. Wishing you all much health and happiness for the coming year!

Andy Walters has run Lindfield’s Fine Furnishings’s for over 25 years, and he explained to me how his team hand-makes every sofa to each customer’s specifications. Uniquely, this utterly bespoke customer service, instead of costing the earth, is entirely free. “It’s our unique selling point, which helps us beat our competitors on the high street,” Andy told me. Each design has numerous permutations and literally thousands of fabric options. Find a sofa that appeals visually, then fine-tune it: add a couple of inches to the legs, choose a cushion filling (feather, foam or a combination), make the seat wider or the arms narrower, then choose the perfect

fabric. Instead of having to select from a small swatch book, Andy can usually request a large piece of fabric to be sent, so you can drape it in situ and see how it works in your room. After so long in business, Andy has a range on show of his most successful designs, which can be further tweaked for individuality. “Many customers wonder whether to re-cover their existing suite or buy a new one,” said Andy. He can advise during a personal visit if a sofa is worth recovering or more economical to replace. Some customers choose a new sofa but have an existing chair covered in matching fabric – a great way to recycle favourite pieces of furniture.

Searching for the

perfect sofa

can feel like a quest for the Holy grail. You find one with the right fabric, another is more comfortable but won’t fit in your lounge, a third has great styling… What to do?

Andy also stocks high quality Somnus and Staples pocketed beds. “We are the largest stockist in Mid Sussex. These beds have been produced for over 100 years,” he told me, adding that the beds offer the same exceptional quality as his sofas. As Andy’s showroom is located above the workshop, customers can actually see their sofa being made. There’s a comforting honesty about watching a craftsman hand-stitch a sofa that has a 10-year guarantee of construction and is built to last generations rather than years. “We encourage people to take their time; you can’t rush something as personal as a sofa.” I watched Andy advise some of his customers, encouraging the couple to find out exactly which design worked best for them. If you are pondering your options for re-covering or replacing your existing sofa, get exactly what you want at this unique workshop. The right sofa can be pure joy and will never disappoint.

Long before watches were readily available, even small villages had their own clockmaker, and Cuckfield was an established centre for clockmaking. I visited Cuckfield Museum, marvelling at an imposing case clock and wondering why it had only a single hand. The clock (shown overleaf) was the usual product of the 17th-century clockmaker; the space between numbers was divided into quarters to signify 15-minute segments rather than the five-minute divisions of two-handed clocks made after the mid-18th century. The example I was looking at was made by Edward Gatling, one of Cuckfield’s most renowned clockmakers who followed in the footsteps of his father, John. In an article on the Cuckfield clockmakers, author and member of local clockmaking family Hubert Bates mentions that he owns a John Gatland clock that “has not had a single new wheel or pinion, and beyond minor repairs, is just as he turned it out nearly 200 years ago.” Edward’s work was even

more advanced than his father’s and Bates notes that he owned an example with “a cleverly designed arrangement for repeating the hours which I have never found in another 30 hour clock.” Bates remarks that it was usual to find a Gatling clock in “most of the farmhouses and some of the cottages in Cuckfield.” Compare this with today when virtually nothing, let alone something as complex as a clock, is made in the village where it will spend its life! Sussex was the centre of the iron industry, and dense forests were being cut down to provide fuel to smelt the ore. When the industry collapsed due to fuel shortage, the county became poorer. Clocks would still have been made in quantity in more prosperous market towns, while smaller villages would still have had enough local customers to support at least one clockmaker. Isaac Leney was the first clockmaker known in Cuckfield; the remains of his church clock still hangs in the belfry and bears the date 1667. When working, the clock was wound every other day with a kind of windlass and had the usual single hand. It continued working for 200 years, finally stopping in 1867, and Hubert Bates remembered a gruesome story recalled by his father who wound the clock as a boy: One day, he had been delayed and went to wind the clock at dusk, only to discover the sexton, Dick Hart, hanging from a bell rope. Bates remembered him saying that he “never again, as long as I lived,

Smith was best known for his ‘Act of Parliament’ clock which was originally made for the Talbot Hotel to time the coaches that thundered through Cuckfield, and it ended up in the Kings Head when the owners moved. continued on next page

“If clocks or watches you would buy,

Fowle and Palmer can supply ”

continued from previous page

Cuckfield Museum has a late 18th-century 30-hour longcase clock by Smith; the mechanism had been displayed on its own for years until 2009, when a mahogany case was acquired so that it would look as it did 200 years ago. Its style and quality indicates that it would have been owned by a prosperous local tradesman or farmer. The museum also holds a rare silver fob watch by Edward Gatland; it’s scarce because many were melted down with the advent of wristwatches. The craft of clockmaking tended to be passed from father to son. One of the most prolific families in Sussex were the Fowles of East Grinstead who first appeared in town records in 1700. Thomas Fowle was born in Uckfield but moved to East Grinstead in 1769, fathering several sons in the family house in Middle Row. A directory of 1799 encourages potential customers that “if clocks or watches you would buy, Fowle and Palmer can supply.” Thomas’

12

SuSSex Living January 2014

son Richard has his name inscribed on the church clock at St Swithun’s which indicates the importance of the family business within the town. The first reference to a clockmaker in East Grinstead was Richard Cornish who was given a 10-year contract to repair the church clock in 1693. Because most people did not own a clock, it was vital that the church clock was reliable. Although Richard was known as a blacksmith, he could make clocks due to his skill in metalsmithing. At this time, it was common for men to combine occupations, depending on how easily their skills transferred to other trades. Richard appeared to be in great demand; he is also recorded as working in Edenbridge and travelling as far as Battle to provide his clockmaking services. The gap between rich and poor in the 18th century was wide; most country-made clocks in Sussex were made of home-grown oak; being 30hour clocks, they needed to be wound every day. Wealthy people could afford an 8-day clock which only needed to be wound every week. These were made in expensive, imported mahogany and local clockmakers would travel around to regularly maintain clocks in large country houses. continued on next page

Although clockmaking has a long history in England, prior to 1600, it was undertaken almost exclusively by continental tradesmen. Many tower or church clocks were made in situ by these men, while smaller items such as table clocks would have been imported into Britain. Religious persecutions during the 16th century resulted in an influx of refugees who included clockmakers and, from the early 17th century, Englishmen began learning the craft from these men. There is a record of a Peter Sommelier in Rye as early as 1571, and the great clock at Rye Church was made by Lewis Billiard, a protestant from Gascony in 1552. The village of Bolney was home to clockmaker Cornelious Muzzell, a Huguenot refugee and his son who carried on his father’s craft. The most important English clockmaker was Thomas Tompion, prolific in the early 1700s and clockmaker to the Crown. He is believed to have owned a factory in Aldgate, London, where ‘rough’ movements were made to be finished to individual customers’ requirements. Mechanical clocks were first used in monasteries to regulate the prayers of monks; the clock’s purpose was to strike a bell every hour to serve this purpose. It was the chiming bell that gave clocks their name; the Latin clocca (bell) demonstrates how important the bell was to mark the time of day. The rural church clock would have been heard across the landscape, tolling the hours while farm workers toiled in fields around the village. The church clock was symbolic of village cohesion; it called the hours and acted as regulator for the working day. As industry began to take over from agriculture and village trades, clocks needed to be ever more accurate as their role was primarily to keep time for the worker. Regulator clocks were precision-made to provide as accurate a measurement as possible to which other clocks www.sussexliving.com

could be regulated from. An example in Cuckfield Museum was made by Edward Bates in the early 19th century and it can be seen in a photo of ‘Fluff ’ Newham’s clock shop on Cuckfield High Street. Clock restoration and repair is a highly skilled craft that continues to be in strong demand. John Carpenter of East Grinstead showed me round his workshop, where beautiful painted dials and disassembled movements wait to be restored to their former glory. One example, made in Crawley, had a detailed painting of a rural scene, complete with windmill sweeps that mark the seconds as they turn. Hurstpierpoint restorer Sam Orr showed me how craftsmen would embellish dials with engraved details that encompassed moving depictions of the sun and moon. The golden age of clockmaking may be long gone, but Sussex is home to legions of survivors from previous centuries and many are on permanent display in museums and houses that are open to the public. Church clocks and town hall clocks are often glanced at but rarely studied, yet provide a window to an age before watches made time portable. The church clock is perhaps symbolic of community while the watch denotes independence from that place of belonging. This could explain why the chime of a clock tolling the hours across open fields seems so comforting. It was the familiar sound our ancestors would have lived their lives to, regular and reassuring at the centre of a changing world.

Welcoming me to

Clark & Company’s new offices

Haywards Heath, Mitch Clark smiled, as he always does.

On the money Mitch Clark is a highly qualified tax specialist, but that doesn’t prevent him from having a wonderfully warm and friendly personality. On the contrary, it may be part of his business success! Mitch confirmed that the move to larger premises was at least in part due to Clark & Company’s continuing growth, as well as a strategy to make the best use of its financial resources and improve his tax position. “As an Association of Taxation Technicians Fellow, it would be a bit silly of me not to be taking my own advice,” he laughed. The growing client list include an eclectic range of individuals and companies, all of whom find that having the support of Clark & Company is not only reassuring but extremely valuable. “We provide services that include handling the personal tax affairs of individuals, right up to being embedded as Management Accountants at board level in companies turning over millions of pounds,” he explained. The corporate side of the business is assisted by four offsite bookkeepers and Mitch is currently looking for a fifth to help manage services such as Accounts Preparation, Corporation Tax Compliance, Bookkeeping and Payroll assistance. Clark & Co also provide Business Management Consultancy – particularly useful for start-up companies, helping

Here is a man who strongly believes in the value of personal relationships in a world of numbers. them to develop growth strategies and financial management systems, as well as ensuring they comply with tax and VAT legislation. As far as tax is concerned, Mitch is adamant. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re a private individual or a company, the tax rules that affect you change all the time. They’re a constantly moving target, so it’s vital to have a specialist on your side. Remember that HM Revenue & Customs are not infallible, so it may well be worth challenging them if you think you have a case. That’s where a good tax adviser comes in – it’s my job to make sure that my clients don’t pay any more than they need to.” The Clark & Co approach to the provision of accountancy and

tax services certainly seems to be working, with some 45 new clients joining the practice in the last 12 months alone. Mitch is particularly proud that the quality of his company’s work stands comparison with much bigger multi-partner firms. With smaller overheads to carry, Clark & Co’s client fees can often be substantially less than these larger, less personal practices. Mitch Clark is a man who believes very strongly in the value of personal relationships in a world of numbers.

New website launched making it easier for you to instruct a Barrister directly

Need legal help? Confused by the court process? www.barristerforme.com may have the answer you’re looking for. Going through a court process can be confusing, stressful and costly. But new options are now available to support you. A group of experienced barristers based in Brighton have just launched a new website www. barristerforme.com which has been designed to make it as simple as possible for a member of the public to obtain the services of a barrister direct. Traditionally, the only option was to instruct a solicitor who would, in turn, appoint a barrister to represent you in Court, but you now have a choice as to how you run your case. There are three main options available:

The new website www. barristerforme.com explains how you can instruct a barrister. It lists the barristers available to help you together with their full professional CVs. All of them are very experienced and practise from a highly regarded Chambers in Brighton whose friendly staff will talk you through the process and agree the cost with you. All involved have a wealth of experience and knowledge of the Courts in Sussex and in other areas along the South Coast.

If you have a problem in one of these areas do not hesitate to visit www.barristerforme.com to see whether, and if so, how their barristers might be able to help.

www.barristerforme.com T 01273 81 00 11 E email@barristerforme.com

Advice and advocacy services can be provided in relation to a broad range of areas of law including family, criminal and civil matters which are described in detail on the website.

1. Solicitor and Barrister: If you need a comprehensive legal service, then specialist solicitors will represent you throughout the process. Solicitors may instruct a barrister to represent you at court - or they may do this themselves. The traditional route of using both a solicitor and barrister (both of whom will need paying) can be expensive and it is not always the case that you will be able to recover your legal costs in this process.

2. Go it alone: You may feel sufficiently confident to represent yourself conducting all the preliminary proceedings and representing yourself in the Court Room. This can be extremely daunting for those who do not have an understanding of the law and the legal system and could put you at a disadvantage, especially if the other side have legal representation.

3. Instruct a Barrister Direct: Direct public access means that you can instruct a barrister (without going through a solicitor) to represent you for court hearings. Barristers will not be able to ‘conduct the litigation’, ie process correspondence, for you leading up to the Court Hearing, but they can give you guidance, if you want it, and then represent you at Court or in a Tribunal. You control how much assistance you want the barrister to provide.

LOCAL Ditchling Players By the time you read this, our autumn production of ‘Quartet’ is a distant memory and everyone involved will be taking a well earned rest (in particular the 4 actors who had such a lot to learn). Instead, we›re already thinking of our Spring 2014 production ‘The Chalk Garden’ by Enid Bagnold, to be directed by Tom Dufty. The story revolves around the eccentric Mrs St Maugham who has engaged the enigmatic Miss Madrigal to be governess to her granddaughter at her country manor house in Sussex. The house has a garden with a difficult chalky soil; equally difficult to manage is the girl, a precocious liar who fabricates stories about her childhood. The household is mystified by Miss Madrigal, who has a secret past herself which helps her relate to the granddaughter.

Burgess Hill Runners Picture this in your mind if you can: a Wednesday night stuck in front of the television or a chance to socialise, make new friends and exercise. What else could you ask for? When I joined Burgess Hill Runners last August, I never would have believed I would still be running and, more to the point, enjoying my Wednesday nights as much as I do. Whether you are a nonrunner, someone who just wants to get fit, or someone who is taking up running after injury etc., then this could be the place for you. No abilities are turned away – all are welcome and that means everybody. The Wednesday 6:30pm group meets at Burgess Hill School for Girls and focuses on beginners and improvers. An hour – come rain, hail or shine – of superbly led training by great coaches who really motivate you to do well and achieve more for yourself. The only targets you have are the ones you set yourself. No one is left behind on a run; everyone’s needs are catered for. For all those of you out there who think ‘I can’t do it’, you can. Come along to a session, no commitment to sign up if you don’t enjoy it – but you will! I

wasn’t sure I would, but I did and still do. Once you have the running bug, Wednesday nights or Tuesday mornings (our other beginners group who meet at The Triangle) will never be the same again. They will have been changed for the better. Why not give it a try? Make it your New Year’s resolution! Before you know it you will be signing yourself up for one of the West Sussex Fun Run League races and then you’ll really know that the running bug has well and truly bitten you!! Come and join the Burgess Hill Runners on Tuesdays, 9.45am at The Triangle or Wednesdays, 6.30pm at Burgess Hill School. www.bhrunners.co.uk (Elaine Scott)

Burgess Hill Fairtrade and Freedom Festival Burgess Hill Fairtrade has announced its Festival programme for March 2014 and reveals the details of its prime sponsor with a significant involvement by Freedom Leisure. Robert Eggleston (Chair Burgess Hill Town Fairtrade) said: “The Martlets in Burgess Hill is an important venue for the Fairtrade Festival and the team at The Martlets has been terrific supporters over the years. When Michael McGinley (Freedom Leisure’s Manager at the Martlets) said that Freedom Leisure would like to do more to promote the Festival, we just felt that this was

a natural progression for us. To acknowledge their support, the 2014 festival will be the Burgess Hill Fairtrade and Freedom Festival.” Michael McGinley said: “We have always been impressed with the range of events put on by Burgess Hill Fairtrade and our support in 2014 is a way of putting something back into the community and helping to support Fairtrade in Burgess Hill.” The Burgess Hill Fairtrade and Freedom Festival starts on Friday 7th March and runs to Sunday 16th March. The grand opening is at The Martlets and is kicked off by Rock Choir from Sussex, Hereward Kaye (ex Flying Pickets) and his band, and BAFTA award winning scriptwriter turned stand up Paul Kerensa (Miranda, Not Going Out and The Now Show). It continues at The Martlets on Saturday 8th March with The Dublin Legends (formerly of The Dubliners) who continue the tradition of the legendary Irish folk band. Other events include a showing of Amazing Grace, which deals with the abolition of the slave trade. The final of the Mid Sussex Battle of the Bands becomes part of the Festival as Rock for Fairtrade. New Museum of Crawley Crawley Borough Council, in partnership with Crawley Museum Society, has been awarded £1.15m by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to provide a new museum in the town centre. Work on the new museum, which will be located in The Tree and The Tree Annexe with a glass link between the two, is expected to start in April 2015 and take around 18 months to complete. The successful HLF bid will see The Tree restored, renovated and fitted out as a new museum space. The project will see new specialist display facilities and equipment in The Tree and The Tree Annexe,

educational material developed and lots of exciting opportunities ahead for volunteers and the public to get involved. The Tree has great potential to improve heritage in Crawley, with its central location, architectural quality and greater size than the current museum in Goffs Park House. The Tree is a Grade II listed building and well worth preserving, originating around 1280. Crawley Museum Society will operate the new service with financial support from the council. The total cost of the project is £1.95m. Crawley Borough Council had already agreed to spend £763,000 to refurbish The Tree and bring it up to standard. Helen Poole, Curator of Crawley Museum, said: “This news is a great Christmas present – we’re absolutely delighted to hear the news. The HLF’s financial commitment, on top of Crawley

Borough Council’s support and input, will enable us to expand the museum service to take account of all the rich diversity and heritage of Crawley in a fine setting. Councillor Duncan Crow, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news. We’ve been working closely with Crawley Museum Society to develop our bid over the past few years and are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has approved this. “The new museum will provide a massive boost to the regeneration and heritage in the town, giving the museum a much more central location from which to inform, educate and entertain. “I would like to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund, volunteers and staff of the Crawley Museum Society, officers and staff of Crawley Borough Council and councillors who have supported us.”

Happy together! There is currently a shortage of foster carers who can take groups of siblings into their homes. West Sussex County Council are actively looking for people to help. To be taken into care, away from everything and everyone you know, can be a frightening and confusing time for a child. This is why it is so important for siblings to remain together during their time with a foster family. “Some people might think fostering siblings means double trouble, but in our experience that hasn’t been the case,” explains foster carer Lorna Barrow. “We’ve found that the support siblings give each other emotionally and physically helps them cope with the time away from their families.” Remaining together gives siblings the chance to bond with each other, learn how to care, share and look after each other. These are all skills that help them resettle more easily back into their own family network. What’s more, having the opportunity to become part of an extended family during their fostering experience gives these children a much needed sense of belonging and stability that may

have been missing in their lives. “Many of the children haven’t had the opportunity to make proper attachments to anyone before,” says Lorna. “But once they feel nurtured and cared for, the emotional rewards are

It’s a joy to watch them develop a relationship with each other and enjoy being

part of family life. huge in terms of their affection, their chatter, their play and their laughter. I know that whatever we give to them as a family we get double back – and it’s a joy to watch them develop a relationship with each other and enjoy being part of family life.” For anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer, there is an endless supply of help and support available. This can range

from formal training courses, to invites to shared activities and parties, along with the chance to swap tips and advice with other foster carers. “You meet some lovely people, “ Lorna tells me, “and we’ve made some really special friends.” While caring for siblings can be a rewarding experience, carers need to consider the practical issues involved. The children may need more than one bedroom, depending on their age and gender, and if you already have a busy family life with young children of your own, juggling at least two more, in terms of school runs and activities, may not always be practical. It can also be hard when the children move on, but as Lorna says, “we try to cushion the time the children are in care and if we can make this a positive experience for them, we know we have helped to make a difference to their lives.”

If you are considering becoming a foster carer, please contact the Fostering Recruitment Team on 0330 222 7775, or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fostering

Space – the final frontier In most households, there comes a time when your living space becomes a bit of a squeeze. Maybe you have growing children who show no signs of wanting to leave the nest, perhaps you’ve taken in an elderly relative to care for, or maybe you have a growing business which you run from home. Whatever the case, we are often left with the dilemma of whether to move or improve. Moving home is one of the most stressful things you can do; it is also one of the most expensive, and it may not always be the best option. If you’re emotionally attached to your house, love the neighbourhood, or if money is an issue, it can make better sense to make the most of your current space. There are many cost effective ways to increase the size of your living space. And by spending the money you’ve saved by not moving house, it may be possible to create your dream home from your current one. What’s more, in many cases these improvements will increase the value of your home by more than your initial outlay, so they are worthy of serious consideration.

if your home is getting too small but you have no intention of moving – what are your options?

Building an extension Need a larger kitchen or living room? More bedrooms or perhaps a utility room? Make your home bigger and get exactly what you want by adding an extension. Whether the prospect of a domestic building project fills you with excitement or dread, it’s important to keep a cool head and plan thoroughly. Get advice from local architects and develop your ideas for the design and use of space together. Work out budgets and talk to local building contractors, so you know exactly what they can do for you. Most building work is subject to Building Regulations, but the need for planning permission has recently been relaxed, so you may find you don’t need to apply. Do check with the Planning Department of your local council to make sure. If it’s done well, an extension should add more value to your home than the initial costs. Here are some points you may wish to consider: continued on next page

Pay attention to size, scale and proportions. No-one ever seems to wish for their extension to be smaller, but don’t let it dominate the rest of the house either. Don’t skimp on the design and don’t underestimate the importance of aesthetics. Get a professional designer to advise you on how to connect the old and the new to either achieve a unified look or perhaps an exciting visual contrast. Think about how you will use the extra space and consider lighting, heating, storage, position of windows, doors, radiators etc.

Keymer Double Glazing

Turning a dusty storage space into a new room may involve less work than a full-scale extension, and often you don’t even need planning permission. But before you get too excited about the prospect of adding value to your home in this way, ask yourself: Is the loft suitable? Go up there armed with a tape measure and a critical eye and think about the roof pitch, headroom, possible position of stairs and windows. Dormer windows extend out of the original roof and can help add useable space. Ask a professional about size and design issues. Work with what you have. Many loft conversions have issues with space and awkward angles – and clever planning is key. Work out where a bed/desk/ storage unit would go and use built-in solutions where possible.

Creating a Basement Room Not as crazy as it sounds, basement conversions are now all the rage in central London, where space is at a premium. If you already have a basement, perhaps used for storage, it shouldn’t be a difficult job to convert it; planning permission is rarely needed here. Just think: once watertight and damp-proofed, you could create a new office, playroom, personal gym or even home cinema! Talk to a reputable building firm to find out what is possible.

Adding a Conservatory An obvious way to extend your living space and provide a welcome connection between your home and garden is to add a conservatory. These come under the permitted development category and planning permission is rarely required. What’s more, there are so many styles to choose from – from ornate Victorian orangery to traditional conservatory to super modern glass box – that everyone should be able to satisfy their personal taste and find something to complement the style of their home. Conservatories can give you pleasure all year round while adding that wow factor to your home without costing the earth. If you speak to specialist conservatory installers, they will tell you about advances in glazing technology to provide a high degree of thermal insulation, meaning you can keep temperatures cool in the summer but warm in the winter.

It is a fact that many older style homes now have garages that are too small for the average car. So why not use the space for improving your home? Garage conversions are ideal for kitchen extensions, adding a utility area or playroom, or as a home office. As long as the work is internal and does not involve enlarging the garage, planning permission shouldn’t be required. However, if you want to link your free-standing garage to your house, you will need to contact your local planning department to discuss whether your project needs approval. Bear in mind that by converting your garage from a storage zone to a living space you’ll have some serious dejunking to do….

There is something uplifting about a quality kitchen, planned to maximise space and social interaction. Not only does it make cooking a pleasure but it provides a place where the family can gather. Talking to David Otway, owner of Woodborne Kitchens in Albourne, and Head of Sales & Marketing, Chris Tonkinson, I realised how much expertise goes into planning and building the perfect kitchen. Not only do Woodborne craft one of the largest ranges of traditional solid wood kitchens in the country, it does so at prices below those found on the high street. Chris explained how the new style of ‘1909’ traditional kitchens is incorporated into the Woodborne Designer Kitchens range. They combine up-to-theminute styling with competitive pricing without compromising on the quality that the awardwinning kitchens are known for. “Woodborne will be on the client’s journey every step of the way,” said Chris, “from architects’ drawings and building regulations to construction, colour schemes

and choosing accessories to complement the kitchen.” Having been awarded the Media Today Award for ‘Wooden Kitchen Specialist of the Year 2012’ and being featured in an upcoming Channel 4 show by Sarah Beeny for a house renovation in Saltdean near Brighton, Woodborne continues to gather attention for its absolute commitment to customer satisfaction.

Media Today Award for ‘Wooden Kitchen Specialist of the Year 2012’ No chipboard or MDF is used in a Woodborne Solid Wood Kitchen range. While most kitchen doors tend to be a standard 1822mm thickness, Woodborne use 32mm of solid tulipwood. This wood is virtually knot-free, making it resilient to dents, which is good news for parents of young children learning to navigate the kitchen.

Soft-closing drawers make irritating sticking a thing of the past and the range of colours is as unlimited as the client’s imagination. Built in a local workshop, there are over 300 standard unit sizes, any of which can be modified to fit an awkward corner or an unusual dimension. Carcasses are constructed from 26mm solid pine board with a reassuring strength; these kitchens are built to last and have the look and touch that shout longevity and timeless style. An initial consultation with Woodborne is completely free and without obligation; once a decision has been reached, a drawing and costing are prepared. The ARTicad drawing system gives a realistic impression of how the completed kitchen will look in your home. Another consultation precedes the details and in 8 weeks (or 4 weeks for the Designer Kitchen range) the kitchen will be built, installed and finished. Worktops are available in granite, wood, quartz or Corian; customers can even choose their own slab of granite from the original piece. I viewed a beautiful section of granite, flecked with details that make each piece utterly unique. Units are handpainted in any colour, with popular hues increasingly chosen from Farrow & Ball and the Little Green Paint Company. In a few years, should you require a change of colour, they can simply be repainted to suit your individual tastes. Woodborne can incorporate appliances into the finished design. As agents for Bosch, Miele, Neff and DeDietrich, they can supply top quality products, including the entire range of French Lacanche cookers. These absolutely stunning kitchen ranges are individually built to clients’ specifications and can be completely customised (a full catalogue is available on request).

Colours sift through an extensive palette including a classic Delft Blue, a sizzling Provence Yellow and a retro Light Olive. From a neat 90cm-wide range cooker to a multi-functional range where every family member can cook independently, this brand lives up to its trademark of “serious cookers for serious cooks.” As the heart for a busy, stylish kitchen, a Lacanche range would be hard to beat. They exude quality and the colours have the potential to create a head-turning centrepiece in the social hub of the house. Woodborne can keep prices to their clients down, thanks to having a showroom away from the costly high street. Customers are welcome to make an appointment to view examples from across their range or even visit the Mid Sussex workshop to see their kitchen being built. Wherever possible, FSC certified timber is obtained from sustainable sources and all hinges on the units are made from solid brass or stainless steel. Glass splashbacks can be provided in a matching or complementary

Before I left the showroom, a handpainted sign caught my eye. “That’s the Woodborne ‘Recipe for Success’,” David told me. “A pint of trust, a dash of respect, a cup of understanding, a handful of care and a bag of fun!” Woodborne is in the business of designing dreams that appeal to the whole family – they have found success by listening intently to clients’ wishes and translating them into working, inspiring designs that provide timeless functionality and beauty.

Bargains galore! The January Sales have become a fixture in our annual shopping diary. Has it always been like this?

The tradition began in 1878, when US department store owner, John Wanamaker, reduced the price of his white linens.

S u ss e x L i v i n g January 2014

For well over 100 years, crowds of bargain hunters have been setting their alarms, sharpening their elbows and joining lengthy queues for the Boxing Day sales bonanza. Whether you’re looking to stock up on Christmas goods for next year, or snap up a much wanted and reduced handbag, the January Sales have become one of our yearly traditions. Originally, these post-Christmas sales were known as January White Sales, as the tradition began in Philadelphia in 1878, when department store owner, John Wanamaker, reduced the price of his white linens. An inspired retailer, Wanamaker decided to discount the price of white bed linen for a short period of time after Christmas, to try to increase sales at what was a slow time of year. It wasn’t until the late 1950s that coloured sheets and prints were included in White Sales, but Wanamaker had started something. Soon, January Sales extended to almost every market sector, including fashion, food, furniture and electrical goods. Over the years, people have often queued for days, forsaking their Christmas turkey for a chance to bag a bargain. While this may seem extreme, it is usually worth it as shoppers needing to buy ‘big ticket’ items – fridges, washing machines, bathroom suites, kitchens etc – can often save significant amounts at this time of year. If you’re really organised, you can also save money in the January Sales by buying presents to give throughout the year, and it certainly makes sense to buy summer items such as sunglasses and swimwear during January, when prices are at their lowest. But do exercise some discipline and good old common sense: Those white leather laced trousers may have an 80% discount, but do you really need them? As someone once said, often ‘a bargain is something you don’t need at a price you can’t resist’. While the potential for savings may be huge, one of the rules of successful sales shopping is to ignore the discount and only consider the actual price. Another good idea is to make a list of the things you actually need, so you don’t end up (like me, ahem) with two pairs of designer heels you will never wear. However, times are changing and it seems that the traditional January sales scramble could become a thing of the past. Since the beginning of the credit crunch in 2008, retailers have faced tough trading conditions as people struggle to cope financially and, in an attempt to boost sales figures, many shops now start discounting in the weeks running up to Christmas. Even Harrods now has reductions and sale preview discounts available before their official sale begins. Retailers have become more agile at monitoring demand and altering prices accordingly. And with online discounts, vouchers, flash sales, daily deals and all-year round deals and promotions, the savvy consumer has never had it so good. www.sussexliving.com

The ancient art of

hedgelaying

Once the only means of securing crops and livestock, hedgelaying in Sussex is currently enjoying a

renaissance.

On a non-descript roadside verge, just a short drive east from the village of South Chailey, a fierce competition is taking place. Around a dozen hedgelayers are attacking the unruly line of vegetation that divides the road from a neighbouring field, stripping out blackberry brambles from its roots and cutting the stems of the hedge to create a neat series of diagonal contours. It looks hardgoing: the competitors have only been working for an hour when I arrive on the scene, but already their clothes are damp with perspiration and interlacing cuts cover their arms. “This is one of the best hedges we’ve ‘ad,” says Des Whitington, veteran hedgelayer and judge of this

long-running Laughton & District competition. Des has the kind of rich Sussex accent that you hardly ever hear these days, and he’s been laying hedges now for more than 50 years. As I follow him along the line of the hedge, watching the contestants work, he explains the criteria that he’s judging them on. “First is the quality of the pleach, which is the cut they make before they bend the branch over. Then you’ve got the stakes, which they have to get in at the right intervals, and the binders along the top. It’s got to be stockproof for the farmer’s side of it – no big ‘oles in the bottom where the sheep can get through. The height has got to be finished at four feet, and the continued on next page

last point is general appearance. It’s a mark out of 100 at the end of the day, but there’s a prize for best year’s growth, which we’ll check in 12 months’ time.” Hedgelaying is an ancient agricultural skill, dating from a time when the only way to secure your land and prevent your livestock from straying was to lay a hedge. The practice declined after World War II, as farmers increasingly turned to cheaper options such as hedge-cutting machines and wire fences, but the past few years have seen a revival of interest in this old craft. When he first started out, Des tells me, there were only six people laying hedges in Sussex, above and beyond agricultural workers. Now, the South of England Hedgelaying Society has somewhere in the region of 170 members.

A craft that anybody can have a crack at Also watching the competition is President of the South of England Hedgelaying Society, Ron Mouland. Illness has prevented Ron from joining the competitors, making this the first year since 1982 that he hasn’t taken part in the event. The Society now runs regular training days for would-be hedgelayers, Ron explains. But, like Des, he learned the unofficial way. “My father worked on a farm all his life, and this was the only competition going in the area then,” he explains. “He said he wanted a three-generation hedgelaying team – that was my continued on next page

brother’s son, myself and him – and I kept putting it off. Then in 1982, he said ‘this is the last time I’m going to ask you, boy’, and I finally agreed. He took me to his allotment, showed me how to do it, and that was it. I enjoyed it so much, I regretted not getting into it before!” In 1985, Ron formed the South of England Hedgelaying Society along with a few old friends. The Society now runs four training days every year, as well as a ‘President’s and Chairman’s’ team event, a charity competition in aid of Chailey Heritage, and several other competitions around the area. One of the biggest competitions of the year takes place at Hurstpierpoint, right in the heart of the Mid Sussex area, and the next event will be in February at Colburns Farm in Laughton. Complete novices are welcome – although it might be a good idea to attend one of the training days first, to avoid being too obviously trounced. When we finish chatting to Ron, the hedge is already beginning to take shape. It’s easy now to tell the more experienced competitors from the novices, and we’re also beginning to get a feel for the process. The first step is to clear brambles, nettles and wire from the base of the hedge, before untangling a stem and creating a ‘pleach’ by cutting through around 90% of the base. Next, the stem is bent over and the process repeated on a second branch. Finally, stakes are added along the centre of the new hedge and binders added to the top of the stakes. While the skilled hedgelayers are working

38

S u ss e x L i v i n g January 2014

faster and more gracefully than the beginners, it’s clear that this is a craft that anybody can have a crack at. But why bother? “Plenty of reasons,” says Ron. “It makes the hedge look nice – and this one should now be good for the next 16 or so years, as long as it’s kept trimmed. It creates a stockproof barrier, it’s good for wildlife, and it’s satisfying too. Plenty of people who give it a try at our training days want to carry on doing more for themselves.” Sadly, it’s unlikely that hedgelaying will ever replace cutting machines and wire fences again on a widespread scale; it’s simply too expensive. Mr Beaney, who has donated his hedge for today’s competition, is getting an excellent deal, but if the hedge were being laid privately it would cost anything from £15 to £20 per yard. The future of the craft, then, lies in passionate individuals like Des and Ron, who are promoting it as an enjoyable hobby as well as a way to preserve our rural heritage. If you’re looking for a way to reconnect with Mid Sussex’s ancient past, then this is the perfect skill to engage with.

Gardening

Blooming Times Don’t get into a rut and repeat the same reliable format year after year.

Gardens thrive on change.

New Year’s resolutions: a shipful of promises and good intentions, dashed on the rocks of doom by the second week of January. Yes, we will walk instead of taking the car, we will lock away the biscuit barrel and we will visit Granny more often. Earnest hopes, honestly meant, but real life always intervenes and, within a few weeks, we find ourselves back in the old routine, saying “February already? What’s the point?” Horticultural resolutions, however, are different things entirely. You may lapse in January but there’s plenty of opportunity to pick up the pieces at any time throughout the year. The notion of ‘putting the garden to bed for winter’ is nonsense. Gardens never sleep – there’s always something useful to be getting on with. Pre-planning may be a dull phrase, but overlook it at your peril – it’s one of the best resolutions you can make. Tidying up the greenhouse before embarking on a major potting and sowing session will improve both your work rate and temper. Simple things, such as having a good supply of clean flowerpots and premixed compost close to hand, make all the difference. Put a wintery afternoon to good use by sorting through tools, sharpening and oiling them as necessary. Most of us are undisciplined when it comes to labelling. Faced with a fiddly seed packet and muddy,

frozen fingers, our inclination is to do without the label, thinking we’ll remember what we’ve planted. 20 identical-looking seed trays later, I guarantee you’ll have forgotten entirely. The secret is to write labels beforehand. Make a cuppa and sit in comfort whilst sorting seed packets, writing labels as you go. This makes a tedious activity a pleasurable one and, if you keep everything together in a discarded Christmas sweetie tin, you’ll have a stock of prepared labels ready for planting time. Every gardener’s New Year’s resolution should be ‘do something different’. Sow a new variety, try a different planting combination, buy a plant you’ve never heard of before, or grow a familiar old favourite in a different way. Last year, I discovered that cosmos does incredibly well in a north facing border – who’d have thought it? Lilies too will take a good deal of shade and their sumptuous flowers last for ages in cooler conditions. The ubiquitous houseplant, Chlorophytum, (spider plant), forgotten and unloved in offices throughout the land, becomes a cascade of exotic elegance when planted outside in a hanging basket; your visitors will gasp and inwardly curse themselves for not thinking of doing it. Make 2014 a year of experiment and change – there is so much to discover.

The notion of ‘putting the garden to bed for winter’ is nonsense.

Gardens never sleep.

Happiness in 2014 Have you made any new Year’s resolutions yet? Why not step back and take

a good look at your overall personal happiness first, before deciding on a specific plan of action.

New year, new you? January is always a good time to take stock of how life has been going and what improvements you feel you’d like to make for the year to come. Sometimes, the answer seems obvious; it might be weight loss, a job change or perhaps a relationship issue that you need to work on. But what if you’re not quite so sure where to focus your energies? This is where the Wheel of Life can help. A useful tool routinely employed by counsellors and life coaches, it encourages you to consider each key area of happiness in turn. How satisfied are you in your work? How healthy do you feel? What about love, and money? Marking each ‘slice’ of your overall happiness ‘pie’ on a scale of 1 (not at all happy) to 10 (extremely happy) will lead you to create an individual map – a visual presentation of your current state of personal contentment. If you’ve never done this simple yet effective exercise before, do have a go by marking up the chart above. All it takes is an open mind and a few minutes to spare. To help you get started, there’s a brief explanation of each of the 10 areas overleaf, as well as an example of what a completed chart might look like.

When you’ve finished, take a look at the map you’ve created. Are you satisfied with the amount of happiness in your life overall? Which areas are strongest? Weakest? Are you appreciating your good fortune in the segments with the highest scores? Which areas do you want to improve? Armed with clear information, you’re now ready to devise a positive plan. Whether you decide to join a choir or take up yoga, resolve to declutter your home or reassess your spending patterns, or carry out a wholesale review with the help of a life coach – the important thing is that you’re pursuing your individual goals, so that 2014 will turn out to be a truly happy new year. continued on next page SuSSex Living January 2014

health & Fitness Take a long, honest look at your physical wellbeing and ask yourself some important questions: How fit and healthy are you feeling right now? Think about your general energy levels, sleep patterns, ability to manage stress. Where are you with regard to regular exercise and a healthy diet? Do you have any medical conditions that need addressing? Feeling good in your body is a key indicator of overall happiness.

career We can’t all be brain surgeons or Hollywood actors, but shouldn’t we aim to be fulfilled in our chosen careers? Do you love what you do for a living? Consider to what extent your job is meaningful to you and suited to your particular skills and interests. Do you feel valued, supported and properly remunerated by your employer for the contribution you make to the organisation you work for?

Friends The English poet John Donne is credited with the phrase ‘No Man is an Island’. We all need strong social networks and positive friendships to feel in balance and come alive. How well do you connect with the people around you? Do you have supportive mates, friends or neighbours that make you feel good and that you can share things with?

44

SuSSex Living January 2014

Physical environment How’s your personal organisation? The clutter in your home, chaos on your desk, mess in your car etc is a reflection on what goes on in your inner world. Is there space in your life for new things or are you holding on to the old for longer than is good for you? Now widen your perspective. Do you feel a sense of connectedness with the community you live in; are you helping to look after our planet?

Finances Don’t make the mistake of measuring your financial happiness by comparing yourself to Richard Branson! Instead, consider how well you are managing your money. Are you in control of your expenditure and can you live well within your means? What about saving for the future and adequate insurance to protect yourself and your loved ones?

Fun & Recreation Reconnecting with your inner child now and again is a foolproof shortcut to your happiness centre. How often do you laugh, dream, play, be daring, silly, for no other reason than that it makes you feel good?

Family Of course, no-one has a perfect family – but do you love yours and look forward to being with them? How close is your relationship with your children, parents, other relatives? Do you freely give them your time and attention? Do you feel accepted within the family or are there issues?

Personal Development Think about how much you exercise and expand your mind, not because you have to but because it makes you feel alive! Perhaps you love to read for pleasure, or sing, paint, take an interest in current affairs? If you stay curious, engaged and open to new ideas or pursuits, your mental wellness will soar.

Inner World Take a look at the beliefs, values and ethics that help guide your life. Are you at peace with yourself ? True to yourself ? Do you feel connected to a higher power or inner optimism that keeps you grounded?

Love & Romance Are you happy in your relationship status? Do you feel close to your partner and enjoy being in a loving and supportive relationship with shared values? If you’re not in a relationship, how much does that bother you? Are you quite happy being single or on the lookout for a soulmate?

Can you stay off the booze for 31 days? Feel Better. Save Money. Make a Difference.

New Year, New Challenge

FREE TRIAL They say that many hands make light work but can the same be said for feet? It can if your goal is to complete a marathon with a little help from your friends. The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend returns in May and Mid Sussex District Council’s Wellbeing team is keen to help local residents take part, especially those who haven’t exercised in a while. A marathon is a stern test for just one athlete, but the Mid Sussex Marathon is a unique event that’s perfect for beginners because runners can share the work. The event takes place over three days and can be run as part of a team, with each runner covering a small section of the distance. Groups can tackle the marathon as a relay, with runners completing around 3.3 miles before handing over to the next member of the team. The Mid Sussex Wellbeing service is looking for people who would like to get back into exercise to join their team, by either running a leg of the marathon or taking part in the Mid Sussex Mile. The Wellbeing service is working in partnership with Haywards Heath Harriers and Burgess Hill Runners to provide dedicated running groups to help beginners learn to run. Learn to Run courses start in February in Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath. Daytime and evening sessions are available and are open to anyone keen to start running. For £1.50 a week, sessions are aimed at helping people progress from a walk to being able to complete a 3.3 mile run in 10 weeks. The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend starts in East Grinstead with a 10-mile race on Saturday 3 May, moves to Haywards Heath for another 10-mile race on Sunday 4 May and finishes with a 10km race in Burgess Hill on Monday 5 May. Together, the three races combine to add up to the classic marathon distance of 26.2 miles. There’s also an opportunity for individuals to take on the Mid Sussex Mile, a shorter event that will be run before the start of each race.

Kickstart your metabolism

and shed those extra pounds once and for all, with Fit For Moore’s unique bite-sized fitness classes.

Change your life

in 30 minutes If you’re looking to get in shape this year but feel hamstrung by a hectic schedule, Lisa Moore has the answer. Founder of Fit For Moore, a Sussex-based fitness operation, Lisa and her team offer unique 30-minute classes that promise to help you lose weight, shape up and improve your health – all within an impressively tight timeframe. “People juggling busy lifestyles often don’t have hours to spend working in the gym,” she explains. “With these classes, they can achieve the same results in half the time it would take normally.” Lisa was one of the first personal trainers in the UK to offer the ’30 Minute Metabolic Effect’ – a restbased workout that encourages the body to continue burning fat for up to 48 hours after exercising. Through alternating periods of intense activity with periods of rest, the classes aim to kickstart sluggish metabolisms and burn fat fast. Each person sets their own pace, making it ideal for anybody worried about falling behind the group. “Unlike High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), where you are told when and how long to work at high intensity, this class allows you to work at your own level of intensity and then you choose when and how long to rest; once recovered, you join back in with the class,” says Lisa. “It’s simple, and it doesn’t matter how fit you are – it’s open to everyone.” The Fit For Moore studio in the centre of Haywards Heath offers morning, lunchtime and evening sessions, making it easy to squeeze a workout into even the most packed schedule. Best of all, you’ll continue to burn fat all day long! Lisa has a holistic approach to health that focuses on overhauling the metabolism, altering the body’s hormones to overcome the impact of stress and a hectic lifestyle. There is a particular emphasis on nutrition – one of Fit For Moore’s newest and most inventive initiatives is to offer a balanced packed lunch to anybody

who attends the lunchtime classes, taking the hassle out of eating healthily during the week. “As a personal trainer, it’s all about helping my clients get results,” Lisa explains. “Most people sign up to a 3-month, 6-month or 12-month programme, and that involves educating them about health and nutrition as well as regular classes.” Soon, Fit For Moor are planning to offer a Small Group Training programme with up to four people per class for maximum attention. Lisa also hopes to offer early-morning classes for those who want to fit in a fat-blitzing exercise session before hitting the office. I’ve always thought that the middle of winter is a silly time to start anything new, let alone a completely new year. There’s not really much incentive to reinvigorate, rethink, revitalise or re-anything when the daylight is so short and the weather is so awful that staying in bed often seems the best option. It’s the time of year when the sunlit uplands of the cricket season seem impossibly distant. How much more sensible it would be if we threw ourselves into new things in the spring, when we would have the energy and the optimism to think that in the next 12 months we would keep to diets, write a novel or learn to speak Italian, even if our past experience would suggest otherwise. However, we must put our best feet forward and advance into 2014 with hopefulness and high hearts, assuming we all recover from our New Year’s Eve celebrations. I may have some difficulty in recalling all the resolutions I’ve made at the turning of the year, but I can always remember where I was when I made them – some more fondly than others. Like being stranded with a warm Coke in the transit lounge of Mumbai airport or dining with friends waiting for the ‘Millennium Bug’ to trigger the end of the world or, more recently, in a not very jolly pub in rural Norfolk. Counting my wife Liz and me, there were only eight of us in the bar where we’d thought there would be a party. At ten to twelve, the landlady came over and said: “Are you going to be here at midnight then?” When we said yes, she gave us each a single party popper and a paper hat. I just loved the spontaneous enthusiasm of it all.

opinion

How much more sensible it would be if we threw ourselves into

new things in the spring In my native Scotland, of course, there is rather more exuberance at Hogmanay, though I was never entirely sure whether we were celebrating the start of a new year or exhibiting profound relief at having successfully survived the old one. And what will the good folk of Mid Sussex wish for in this shiny new year? The more fanciful ones will be hoping that we can reach the end of 2014 with some countryside left that hasn’t been earmarked for property development. The more pragmatic will be happy with fine days for our village festivals, good health and companionship for our older generations and joyful days for our children. Happy New Year to all of you. www.sussexliving.com

MIRROR MIRROR MIRROR on the wall...

The great thing about winter is that you can wear woolly jumpers all day long.

Winter Warmers Knitwear is not only a functionally practical clothes choice, in the sense that it keeps you warm and toasty through the colder months. When it comes to fashion, woollies are a winter wardrobe wonder worker! Take fine knit tops, for example. Great for layering, or instead of jersey, they can also be worn under tailored jackets or in place of a blouse to the office. Alternatively, wear oversized, slouchy and asymmetrical, perhaps with leggings, for a more off-duty look. Getting ready for winter is easy with knitted garments. I was pleasantly surprised to read recently that polo necks are ‘back with a bang’. Not that I’d realised they’d ever gone away… If your budget stretches, find a style you like and then buy in a selection of uplifting colours: fuchsia, emerald, rose, spice, tumeric are all guaranteed to put a smile on your face when it’s drab and freezing outside. When it comes to woolly fabrics, I firmly believe that lambswool is lovely but cashmere is king! That said, there are so many man-made fibres available that often it’s hard to tell the difference. So go

by what feels good and what you can afford. Not even a to-die-for designer cashmere knit is worth bankrupting yourself over. There are knits for all styles, shapes and sizes. Emphasise your waist with a smart, knitted wrap dress (try midnight blue – a smart daytime choice that’s easy to glam up for afterwork socialising) or hide too many mince pies with a comfy floaty tunic. Chunky Fair Isle jumpers have always been a favourite winter staple, while cosy cardies are a useful throw-over for any outfit. This winter, look out for boho ponchos and chic capes – they’re everywhere. If you’re still not convinced that a knit is it, here comes the clincher: knit gives! It’s soft and stretchy – and I bet there isn’t a woman in the land who hasn’t at some point snuggled into a favourite jumper, relieved that an extra pound here or there is shown to be precisely that: neither here nor there. Whether you’re feeling confident or in need of a hug, knits somehow seem to provide just the right amount of support. Let your sartorial conundrums be guided by what makes you feel good and be a knit girl! www.sussexliving.com

Hair is our crowning glory and when it looks and feels good, so do we. But what if there’s a problem?

Good hair days! It’s comforting to know that if we experience hair loss or develop a scalp condition, Sussex Trichology is on hand to resolve the problem. Shuna Hammocks, a qualified member of the Institute of Trichologists, with over 14 years’ experience working at the famous Philip Kingsley Clinic in London, established Sussex Trichology in Sussex two years ago. “I love my job. I’m passionate about it,” she tells me. “There are so many rewards, particularly the relief on people’s faces when they know they are not going to lose all their hair!” Both hair loss and scalp conditions can be emotionally distressing and Shuna’s philosophy centres on treating each person as an individual. With both the time and expertise to make an accurate diagnosis and devise bespoke treatments, there are few hair or scalp conditions Shuna cannot treat. Working alongside Shuna is trichotherapist Kelly McMahon. Together they treat a wide range of people, including children with hair loss patches, men with genetic thinning (it can be improved!) and women experiencing shedding and hair loss. So what exactly happens when you go to see a trichologist? I am lucky to be invited for a consultation and any apprehension I might have felt is immediately dispelled by the warm and nurturing atmosphere of the Clinic, based in the beautiful Priory in Haywards Heath. Shuna takes a holistic approach to diagnosis, and as both physical and emotional factors can affect our scalp and hair health, we spend an hour or so discussing my general health, nutrition and lifestyle. Hair and scalp problems can arise for a variety of reasons, including hormonal imbalance, iron deficiency and thyroid problems. In certain cases, a blood test may be needed for further investigation. As a qualified phlebotomist, Shuna can do this privately or it can be done through your GP, if the patient prefers.

With the expertise to make an accurate diagnosis and devise bespoke treatments, there are

few hair or scalp conditions Shuna cannot treat Above: Trichology hair consultation with Shuna Hammocks.

Once Shuna has examined my scalp and hair under a magnifying light, we go through to the clinic, a lovely room with classical music and a pampering vibe. A treatment is applied to my scalp and a deep conditioner to my hair. Then a steamer is used to help with product absorption, making it a warm and relaxing experience. Shuna uses the Philip Kingsley products; once they have done their job, she massages my head before rinsing them off. Patients would then be advised on an appropriate programme of treatment and follow-up appointments, and both Shuna and Kelly emphasise that their support is always available. “Everyone needs a trichologist on speed dial,” laughs Shuna. I leave with my scalp, hair and soul feeling nourished and refreshed and would urge anyone with hair or scalp problems not to suffer in silence, but to call Shuna today.

Do you have a problem with dry eyes? Hassocks eyecare Centre is there to help.

The eyes have it! Vicki Macken has been the proud owner of the Hassocks Eyecare Centre for 18 months; she has created a practice where patient care is paramount and where everybody receives a uniformly excellent standard of treatment. Personal relationships are valued and Vicki’s warm, thoughtful personality is evident in everything they do. “I called the practice ‘Eyecare’ instead of ‘Opticians’, because of the extended range of testing and examinations we do,” she says. One very good example is a new service called the ‘Dry Eye Clinic’. Itchy, scratchy and even watery eyes can all be symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome. And although it is more common amongst older people and affects more women than men, it can occur in anybody. It happens when the eyes do not make enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly because the oil glands are blocked or abnormal. This leads to the eyes drying out and becoming inflamed and irritated. As well as just occurring naturally, it can also be caused by contact lenses or by staring at a computer screen, as so many of us do these days. It can even be associated with use of certain medicines, such as antihistamines. While most people just use eye drops to relieve the symptoms, they are not a good long-term solution. An examination is usually needed to establish what the cause might be and to determine proper treatment. “I’ve been seeing patients with Dry Eye for 20 years now,” Vicki explained. “When I see someone in their 80s with

damaged eyelids and sore eyes, it is heartbreaking to think that early treatment might have helped. It really is worth getting it sorted out.” Anyone who feels they may have the condition can pop into Hassocks Eyecare Centre and pick up a self-completion questionnaire, which will reveal the likelihood or otherwise of them having Dry Eye. When you enrol in the Dry Eye Clinic, you’ll receive a specialist examination of your tears and

Now offering a Dry Eye Clinic, with bespoke three-month care and treatment plan and follow-up checks. Right: Vicki Macken.

You will then be given a bespoke treatment plan, including products to get you started and a lesson on how to use them. About a month later, a further follow-up appointment ensures symptoms have improved. The full Dry Eye Clinic Package will cost up to £120, depending on your needs – a small price to pay for something as precious as your eyes.”.

Help and advice for

Bowel Problems Haywards Heath Hospital The medical team at Nuffield Health Haywards Heath understands the pain and distress that bowel conditions can cause. Their priority is to make an accurate diagnosis, so patients can receive the right treatment and return to normal life as quickly as possible.

S

ome medical problems can be more difficult to discuss than others – and bowel disorders are one such area. With numbers of sufferers on the increase, it is important not to be embarrassed about seeking medical advice. Consultant Gastroenterologist, Dr Neil Jackson, explains: “Many patients who come to see me are highly anxious and are in a lot of pain and discomfort. Not only are their symptoms impacting on the quality of their lives, but they are frightened that they may have a serious disease.” Symptoms can include abdominal pain, chronic diarrhoea or constipation, bloating, wind, anaemia, rectal bleeding and weight loss, or any combination of these. In order to make an accurate diagnosis, a medical history and examination is supported, where necessary, by blood tests, a stool test and in some cases, endoscopy, a procedure that involves examining the body internally using a visual imaging device. “An endoscope is a long flexible tube with a light source and a video camera at one end, which can show us exactly what is going on in a patient’s bowel. Over recent years, the technology and imaging has greatly improved in quality and the detail we can see is amazing,” explains Dr Jackson. “We can also take biopsies of the bowel wall and, if we find a small lesion, like a polyp, we can remove it there and then.” Clearly, the key to successful treatment is making a definitive and effective diagnosis, since any of the symptoms above could mean a patient may be suffering from one of four major diseases: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS); Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD); Coeliac Disease or Colon Rectal (Bowel) Cancer. Depending on the diagnosis, most treatments will involve a variety of different medication, alongside changes in diet and lifestyle. “We are lucky here,” Dr Jackson tells me. “Patients are looked after in an environment where we can rapidly provide all the treatments they require: the blood tests, endoscopy and support from our dieticians.”

58

SuSSex Living January 2014

Whatever the diagnosis, Dr Jackson emphasises the need to personalise each patient and look at what can be done on an individual basis to improve the quality of a patient’s life. “In many cases, these are long-term conditions, meaning we will be looking after the patient’s bowels for 50+ years. Our priority, therefore, is to develop a clear management plan for each individual, to get them back to an entirely normal lifestyle. Many of our patients come to us believing they just have to live with their condition as best they can, but we can support them with medication, diet and lifestyle advice to effectively manage their problems.” Have you been suffering from any of these symptoms for three months or longer? Abdominal pain and cramps; bloating and/or wind; chronic constipation or diarrhoea; fever; tiredness; anaemia; weight loss or rectal bleeding. If the answer is yes, it is important to be checked by a medical professional, as so much can be done to alleviate the symptoms and help you to manage your particular condition. “I’m lucky that my job is very rewarding,” says Dr Jackson. “I particularly enjoy the human side, helping my patients’ to manage the ebbs and flows of life’s journey and helping to improve their quality of life.” Nuffield Health Haywards Heath have been delivering outstanding healthcare to the local community for over 20 years. With leading specialists in their fields, the latest technology and committed staff, it’s not surprising that patient satisfaction levels are high. Patients can be treated at Nuffield Health Haywards Heath under private medical insurance or on a self-pay basis. As a charity, the hospital is accessible to all, with healthcare services being more affordable than you might think.

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)

Dr Nick Parnell

IBS is on the increase, and while around 25% of the population are said to be suffering from this condition, it is estimated that most people do not seek medical attention. While there is no known cause or definitive cure for IBS, once an accurate diagnosis has been made, usually from blood and stool tests, the condition can be managed using a variety of medications, together with diet and lifestyle changes.

Dr Mark Austin

INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE (IBD) Around 400 people in every 100,000 suffer from IBD, a condition in which the bowel has become inflamed. There is often a genetic predisposition and diagnosis will usually involve endoscopy and biopsies, before medication is prescribed to bring the inflammation under control. There are two main types of IBD: Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Dr Keith Hine

NUFFIELD HEALTH HAYWARDS HEATH HOSPITAL

COELIAC DISEASE It is estimated that around 1 in 100 people suffer from Coeliac Disease, which involves the digestive system having an adverse reaction to gluten. It can be effectively managed by changing to a gluten-free diet.

COLON RECTAL CANCER While most patients are understandably terrified that their symptoms indicate cancer, this is usually not the case. However, where this is the diagnosis, early detection can result in a complete cure and so it is vital to get any worrying symptoms checked by a medical professional as soon as possible.

Sitting from left to right: Pauline Wadsworth (Treasurer), Barbara Baldwin (Chair) and Elisabeth Willett (Secretary), with some Committee members and supporters.

A voice for older people There are over 27,000 people over the age of 60 living in Mid Sussex. The Mid Sussex Older People’s Council (MSOPC) is a charity dedicated to representing and advising them.

Founded in 2004, the MSOPC promotes and publicises the needs of older people across a wide range of issues and is associated with a number of other local and national bodies. Although that sounds very serious and heavyweight, it also tries to create opportunities to allow older people to enjoy life a bit more – to have fun!. Members of the Council’s committee have close ties with organisations ranging from Healthwatch, the new consumer champion network, to local councils, and from Age UK to Affinity Sutton, the housing association. The Chairman and other committee members meet with the councillors and officials at Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC), West Sussex County Council (WSCC) and the NHS, whenever it is appropriate to do so. And if MSOPC’s purpose in dealing with such an extensive network of disparate groups seems hard to grasp, it

all becomes clear when you talk to Barbara Baldwin, the Council’s articulate and positive Chairman. “Our role,” she tells me, “is to communicate with the decision makers in all of these organisations, both locally and nationally, and put over the views of older people as we discover them from our research. For people to understand the needs of older people, they need to ask an older person rather than listening to the views, however well-meaning, of some younger person in an office looking at statistics and demographics.” These views are discovered by MSOPC by listening to what older people say, and sometimes through specific research, carried out in collaboration with others, including WSCC’s Public Health Department. MSOPC’s funding for all its activities comes from a variety of sources: grants from local councils, charity continued on next page S u ss e x L i v i n g January 2014

foundations and from donations made by generous individuals. The initiative which triggered the founding of the MSOPC came from Anne Jones, an MSDC Councillor who, feeling that some of the needs of old people were not being met by the existing services, put a notice in the newspapers asking if anybody would be interested in forming a group to tackle the issue. Nine good-hearted people came forward including Barbara Baldwin and the now 80-year-old Council Secretary Elizabeth Willett – and MSOPC was born. Almost its first decision was that it would be strictly non- party political and that membership would be free. Initially, laughed Barbara, its total assets were a ream of paper and a box of envelopes. “We were all retired folk and we simply felt there was a communications gap and that the health authorities and the government were about 25 years out of date – as though they thought the older section of the population just sat about just knitting or something!” As well as gathering and disseminating information about the real, practical needs of the

aging population, MSOPC also arranges one-off events which are free to the public and which are usually a mix of entertainment, refreshments and useful information with titles like ‘Paying for Care’ or ‘Pensions and Benefits’ and ‘Warm Homes, Healthy People’. Sometimes an event will be paid for by funds specifically raised by MSOPC for the purpose and sometimes it will be held in conjunction with other bodies like the WSCC or the Health Service. Details of these meetings can be found on the MSOPC website or in their Newsletter. In addition to running their own meetings, the MSOPC is very pro-active in taking their messages out into the community, and that is the job of Development Officer Anita Wright, the only paid member of the charity’s management team. A specialist in the voluntary and public sectors with a focus on older people, Anita is extremely knowledgeable on the subject and carries out her role with real energy and enthusiasm. “I talk a lot at coffee mornings, over 60s groups, Age Concern meetings, WI – you name it. If a group with an interest in or membership composed of older people, would like me to come along, all they have to do is ring up and ask. I’m more than happy to go and give a talk on subjects like health or welfare for example, or the current hot topic in Mid Sussex: loneliness and isolation. Of course, I can always bring in a specialist, if it’s a technical subject like Pensions or Benefit Entitlements.” Anita explains how the MSOPC is dedicated to improving the lives of older people. “It’s not just about existence. Life should be about having fun, mixing with the community, pursuing your hobbies, meeting your friends. You don’t stop needing all these things when you start to draw your pension.” Then there’s the MSOPC Helpline, a very useful resource because the Council is effectively a hub of people from widely different backgrounds and experiences and they can usually provide answers to the questions that trouble older people. The older people’s champions, MSOPC fulfil a much needed and much admired role in improving all our lives because, as someone reminded me: with any luck, we will all be old one day. Food Glorious

Food

While regretting the passing of the season of (mists and) mellow fruitfulness and wishing there were more fresh things to cook in January, remember what Anton Checkov said: ‘People don’t notice whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy.’ So, to the kitchen, where winter vegetables await. Broccoli is a personal favourite, but the problem with cooked broccoli is that it gets cold very quickly. But then I discovered Sweet ‘n’ Spicy Chicken & Broccoli Stir Fry where, for some reason I can’t explain, it doesn’t.

Sweet ‘n’ Spicy Chicken & Broccoli Stir Fry serves 4

1 medium head of broccoli, cut into florets 1 tablespoon of olive oil 2 skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into 1 inch strips 5 spring onions, sliced 1 tablespoon of Hoisin sauce 4 cloves of garlic, peeled, crushed and thinly sliced

1 tablespoon of Hoisin sauce 1 dessertspoon of chilli paste 1 tablespoon of dark soy sauce ½ a teaspoon of ground ginger ½ a teaspoon of black pepper 1 dessertspoon of concentrated chicken stock

1. Steam the broccoli for about 5 minutes until tender but still firm.

2. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and

sauté the chicken, spring onions and garlic until the chicken is no longer pink and the juices run clear.

3. Stir in the Hoisin sauce, chilli paste and soy sauce. Season with ginger and pepper.

4. Stir in the chicken stock, add a small glass or two of boiling water and simmer for a couple of minutes.

5. Mix in the broccoli until it is coated with the sauce, and serve.

Parsnips are a much underrated root vegetable, especially this side of Christmas, but they are exceedingly good in January. Parsnips Molly Parkin was invented by the late Denis Curtis after he and Molly Parkin were reminiscing about their childhood likes and dislikes and Molly said that she had always absolutely loathed parsnips. Denis’s recipe changed her mind.

Parsnips Molly Parkin serves 6

1kg of peeled and sliced parsnips 500g of skinned and sliced tomatoes 5 tablespoons of vegetable oil 75g of butter 3 level tablespoons of soft brown sugar

175g of grated Gruyère or Parmesan cheese 300ml of double cream 4 round tablespoons of fresh white breadcrumbs Salt and pepper

1. Prepare the parsnips by peeling, topping and tailing, then

slicing very thinly using a vegetable peeler rather than a knife. Slice along the length of the parsnips, not horizontally. You will eventually come to the hard inner core of the parsnips; discard these.

2. Gently sauté the parsnips for 4 minutes in the oil. 3. Grease a 1-litre casserole dish with half the butter, then layer about 1cm of parsnip slices over the base.

4. Sprinkle with a little sugar, salt and pepper, then add a little cream.

5. Cover with a layer of tomatoes and spread some cheese over. 6. Repeat these layers until all the ingredients are used up,

finishing off with cream and cheese. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs on top and dot with the remaining butter.

7. Cook for 40 minutes in the centre of the oven preheated to 180ºC/ 350ºF/ Gas Mark 4, but do check after 30 minutes.

Devil’s Dyke This Downland walk heads southwards from Devil’s Dyke towards the distant environs of Brighton & Hove and the sea.

From the car park, take the signed

footpath westwards following an obvious path, keeping to the right of a ruined brick building. According to popular legend, the Devil was furious at the conversion of the Wealden people to Christianity, so he decided to dig a dyke through the Downs so that the sea could flow in and drown all their villages. He dug the dyke over a single night so that his efforts would not be discovered until it was too late. His efforts woke an old woman who lit a candle which woke her cockerel who started to crow. Seeing the light from the candle and hearing the cockerel crow fooled the Devil into believing it was dawn. He hastily departed, leaving his work unfinished and so the Weald was saved! At a path junction by Fulking Escarpment, turn sharp left (almost doubling back) and follow alongside a fence line and out to the road on a left-hand bend. Almost immediately, take the signed bridleway on your right which heads due south. The buildings to your left are Devil’s Dyke Farm; at one time this was the terminus for the railway from

Walk

Hove. It opened in 1887 and left the Coastway West line at Aldrington. It left passengers with a steep climb up to the Devil’s Dyke itself, and when Southdown Buses introduced a service, which took passengers directly to their destination, this hastened the railways demise. It closed in 1938. To continue the walk, the path is initially open on your right but, on reaching a gate, it becomes fenced on both sides. On reaching a crossing track, turn left. This next section of the walk is part of the Monarch’s Way, a long distance walk of 610 miles, and follows the escape route of King Charles II after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. He escaped to France by boat from Shoreham. The track descends into Benfield Valley and then rises to the buildings of the Brighton & Hove Golf Club headquarters. Go through a squeeze stile and on to a tarmac track at the club buildings. The track coming in from your right is the course of the old railway and will take you down to Hangleton where there are buses to Brighton and Hove. continued on next page SuSSex Living January 2014

continued from previous page

On the crest of the hill, turn left and follow a straight tarmac track out to Devil’s Dyke Road. Cross this road and turn left to follow a wide track parallel to the road. At a signed path, turn right and follow the striped marker posts across the Devil’s Dyke Golf Course to join the road from Saddlescombe at Summer Down. Cross the road and turn left on a wide track and walk parallel with the road. On reaching another road, turn right and follow a raised path alongside the road back to the car park.

2012. 115 mins. Set in a small lower class community in rural Denmark, Lucas, the only male assistant in a kindergarten school is charged by the police of abusing the five year old daughter of Theo, one of his best friends. Although depicted as innocent from the start of the film, as a result of the allegation, Lucas is sacked and finds himself a pariah in this tightly knit community. This taut drama is set against a background of deer hunts which bind men together in a macho culture which may of course brutally cast out someone who seems to have broken a taboo. hurst village cinema: to be or not to be (u) Players Theatre, High Street, Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex Director: Ernst Lubitsch, 1942, 99 mins. A Polish theatre troupe is targeted by Nazi invaders during World War II and forced to perform certain plays. However, the actors manage to put their theatrical skills to good use to outwit and befuddle the German soldiers. There’s taste, and there’s this fabulously funny and original wartime comedy from director Ernst Lubitsch, which transcends taste. Witty and cleverly satirical by turns, this movie avoids giving offence by its magnificent casting, with Jack Benny as “that great, great actor Joseph Tura” and the wonderful comedienne Carole Lombard, in her final

film, released after her untimely death in a plane crash. Don’t miss the opening, a hysterical gag concerning Hitler. There’s poignancy, too, and a terrific running joke involving Lombard’s admirer, played by the young Robert Stack.Tickets £4 (£6 non-members) from Mishon Mackay, online or on the door. Making time to

read and share The Hassocks Book Club is celebrating 10 years of friendship and a shared love of reading, showing that far from books being ‘back’, they never went away. When I suggested a book club to a couple of friends

at the school gate, back in 2004 on a frosty January morning, who could have known that 10 years later, not only would we still be together but that, collectively, we would have shared, argued, debated and discussed over 120 books. Apart from our shared enjoyment of reading, I think our longevity can be attributed to several key things: gossip, Pinot Grigio, Merlot and crisps – probably in that order. As a band of women of mature years – our current mantra: 50 is the new 40! – we have shared the many rites of passage, trials and tribulations frequently associated with this age. We know each other’s taste in books so well that we can frequently predict who will choose what, who will like it and who will hate it. 10 years down the line, we also know that the person who sits quietly listening to the discussion, nodding and looking intelligent is the one who hasn’t read the book! Back in 2004, we started with The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Over the years, we have read many titles that are loved by book clubs the world over – The Great Gatsby, The Kite Runner, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, to name but a few. We have read classics such as Lady Chatterleys Lover, Love in a Cold Climate and Jamaica Inn. We’ve travelled the fictional globe and read novels set all over the world, from The Glass Palace set in India, to Nigeria for Half of a Yellow Sun and over to the

American Deep South for The Help. Sadly, we have also read some absolute dross; Russell Brand’s My Bookie Wook wins this category hands down. We’ve been chilled by creepy Swedish thrillers, reduced to tears by Purple Hibiscus and My Sister’s Keeper and crossed our legs through Call the Midwife. We’ve also absorbed an eclectic mix of useful information along the way. We’ve learned about police procedure from our favourite local author Peter James; we know everything worth knowing about Vermeer, thanks to The Girl with the Pearl Earring and we now have a thorough understanding of the life cycle of migratory salmon as set out in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. If you enjoy reading and you’re not in a book club – what are you waiting for? As the great Mark Twain once said: ‘’Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.’’ I couldn’t have put it better myself. Here’s to the next 10 years!

“Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.” (Mark Twain)

business to business

Mid Sussex business –

What’s in store for 2014? haywards heath

Burgess hill The new year will bring renewed optimism for

Sussex, as Burgess Hill Business Parks Association (BHBPA) has a packed programme planned to boost business. David Shore, the Managing Director of Time 24 and a Director of the BHBPA, is poised to be the first speaker of the year at a business breakfast taking place on 23rd January at Icon Live. He will outline the ups and downs of one of Europe’s largest electromechanical engineering firms. In addition to a range of topical meetings for members throughout the year, more light-hearted events include a Charity Quiz Night. Central to the calendar is the now wellestablished Burgess Hill Means Business exhibition. Now in its sixth year, the event takes over the impressive King’s Centre in Victoria Road on 9th May and offers increased space for the waiting list of exhibitors eager to showcase their work at this key networking event. Plans are also underway for a special summer charity event in June to raise funds for local hospices – details will be announced shortly. Looking to the future, the Association continues to work closely with Central Sussex College on an apprentice initiative to develop young minds as executives for the next generation. Since the start of last year, membership has increased by 25% as more businesses realise the benefits of good, local communication and networking opportunities for future growth.

2014 is looking to be an exciting year for the Haywards Heath & District Business Association (HHDBA). We already have a full year of events planned, including Expert Seminars, Skills Workshops, our popular Action Learning Professional Services Group, plus Welcome Meetings where a member showcases their facilities and services. 2014 is also going to be the year of the HHDBA Conference. Scheduled for 7th March, the event will discuss the latest issues in business spanning four main topics: people, money, operations and markets. Members will be

able to mingle with like-minded professionals while listening to the very best speakers from across the district and beyond, and be challenged to take action in their business to improve and prosper. HHDBA can help you connect and do business with other members, help you develop and grow your businesses.

www.hhdba.com

east grinstead After a momentous 2013 will the next twelve months be an anticlimax? Certainly NOT! Looming large in many residents’ minds is airport expansion – should Gatwick have an additional runway? The EGBA will be working closely with local businesses to establish and promulgate their views. The much talked about McIndoe Memorial Statue will be unveiled, probably in June. Judging by media attention so far, this will be a big moment for East Grinstead – an event in which the people of the town will be able to participate in.

The McIndoe Bluebell Pullman, a one-off event, will run on 22nd February. See www.bluebell-railway.co.uk for more information. Our new Meridian Line song and video will be ‘published’ and the inaugural East Grinstead Business Lecture will take place in 2014. Following the successful Meet & Greet trials carried out by the EGBA and East Grinstead Town Council (EGTC) with the help of Waitrose volunteers, the service will be developed into a regular feature. Those interested in helping are asked to contact stuart.scholes@egba.co.uk.

last WORD The

Another year has whizzed past and we’re as busy as ever.

Does anyone still have time to go on holiday these days? At the time of writing, we’re both looking forward to a nice few days’ break over Christmas and the New Year. We are always delighted to be out and about meeting people in the local community, and are lucky to have received quite a few invitations recently. Maycroft Manor Nursing Home in Patcham held its official opening on 21st November, with special guest Gloria Hunniford doing the honours. We would like to thank Hanna for the kind invitation and fascinating tour of the amazing new building. Hurstpierpoint’s late night Christmas shopping event on 5th December was a huge success, when it could so easily have been a washout. But the weather settled, the turnout was fantastic and the generous hospitality by our friendly retailers was much appreciated! More festive cheer was organised by Peter Liddell of the Burgess Hill Business Park Association. We had a very enjoyable evening at Hickstead Hotel on 9th December, complete with carol singing, mince pies and bubbly – thank you, Peter. Finally, we’re delighted to say that our ‘12 Days of Christmas Quiz’ was a huge success. Look out for our February issue where the three lucky winners will be announced. Thanks again to the New Inn (Hurstpierpoint), Inn on the Green (Scaynes Hill) and Tottington Manor (Edburton) for their generous support. We sincerely hope that 2014 will be a happy and prosperous year for everyone in business. Please remember that Sussex Living has your best interests at heart – and we’re here to lend a helping hand to encourage your business to grow, through next year and beyond. Happy New Year to you all.

Dear Sussex Living… Thanks to all the team at Sussex Living for their creative help in putting together our advertorial. We had a great response and really positive comments from our clients about the information on our expansion and new staff members. It really is one of the best ways for us to keep new and existing clients up to date on our salon and all we have to offer. Laura Coppard, Salon Manager, Anna Emilia Hairdressers, Hurstpierpoint It is now a full year since we started advertising our business, Find Your Feet Podiatry & Chiropody, with Sussex Living. We have found it to be one of the strongest elements in our advertising profile for several reasons: it targets our demographic perfectly, the publication is free and available on the street and at many outlets across Sussex, the mix of advertising formats is extensive, and the help and support given by Sussex Living is second to none. We have increased our advertising portfolio with Sussex Living for 2014 because it has been so successful. Zoe Hugman, Find Your Feet Podiatry & Chiropody, Haywards Heath I have been advertising with Sussex Living since 2007 and am a big fan of the magazine. The adverts are always well put together, and I am pleased that the team go the extra mile for clients such as myself. The articles are always interesting, well written and often about history that I had no idea existed! As I have a Sussex Living distribution box outside the shop, I can see for myself how quickly the magazine gets picked up every month. Anne Graham-Evans, Feathers of Hurstpierpoint Thank you for the advertorial in the November issue. The article by Roger Linn was a great success; it was well written and well received by our customers. We have had some fantastic feedback and I would encourage any business looking to improve their customer profile to consider an advertorial in Sussex Living magazine.
