Editor’s comment Hello and a warm and sunny welcome to the July issue of Sussex Living. If the weather doesn’t suddenly play tricks on us again, this month should be all about enjoying the outdoors. There’s certainly no shortage of places to go and things to do in Mid Sussex – just take a look at our Diary Dates on p.53-61. At home, you may well be in the mood to make the most of your patio and garden areas, so you can relax and enjoy the summer in style. For inspiration on ‘taking the inside out’, see our Home & Garden feature (pages 13-18). Can you imagine spring and summer without the buzz of bees in your garden? Not as farfetched as it might sound, the world seems to have woken up to the plight of our bees. Ruth Lawrence discovers that there’s plenty we can all do to help (p.21-25). For our history fans, Hanna Lindon is back with her third and final instalment on Roman history in Mid Sussex and the

Weald – this time focusing on industry – on p.7-10. Roger Linn profiles a hugely impressive man: Brian Gubbin, Chairman of the League of Friends, the charity which directly supports the work of Hurstwood Park Hospital, a national centre of excellence for neurological conditions. Read about Brian’s dedication to the service to others on p. 39-42 and be inspired! Finally, don’t forget our health & beauty, food & drink, local walk and all the other goodies you’ve come to expect from Sussex Living every month. Enjoy!

Scattered around this wellused highway was a constellation of farmhouses, upmarket mansio and bathhouses, backed by the bucolic beauty of the South Downs. We know that many of the Roman residents of Sussex were rich enough to use the best Samian pottery and to install underfloor heating in their villas. We know they could afford to invest in beautiful mosaics and build stylish homes set back from the busy road. But this is far from a complete depiction of ancient life in the area. One thing underpinned

the peaceful agricultural communities of these wealthy Downs dwellers: iron. They needed it for cartwheels, for nails, for farming implements. It was essential for weapons and even for various domestic activities. Every business

needs a Bentley There has never been a time when small businesses, whether they are partnerships, limited companies or sole traders, have needed financial guidance more. In these uncertain economic times, it sometimes seems that the best plan is simply to do nothing new – to stand still for fear of rocking the boat. And yet we know that no business can afford to stagnate. In such circumstances and just to continue the nautical metaphor, it is vital that a business has a competent skipper to steer it through the choppy waters of austerity. That’s where Steve Bentley comes in. Bentley’s, the accountancy practice he founded in Haywards Heath some six years ago, has made something of a speciality of delivering the kind of sound, insightful – but above all practical – advice that helps businesses move forward. And with many such enterprises from right across the spectrum of industries in Sussex as his clients, Steve is hugely experienced in the problems faced by small business. He brings a unique perspective to the management of company finance and taxation, and because he runs a successful business himself, he understands the issues. I met Steve the day after all our personal tax returns had to have been filed, so it seemed appropriate to discuss tax issues. “There’s no doubt,” Steve observed, “that the Inland Revenue has become much more industrious in pursuing things like late submission of tax returns. And the

4

SuSSex Living July 2013

penalties these days are much more severe. There was a time when you couldn’t be penalised for more money than you owed in tax – not any more. Now you will be fined for a late submission, even if you don’t owe the Revenue anything in tax!” The fines available to the tax authorities are quite scary. For an individual, the rates are £100 for being a day late, followed by £10 a day after 3 months, a further £300 after six months and so on. Ultimately, sending in your tax return six months late could cost you at least £1,300 and if you are in a partnership, each partner has to pay the penalty. For Limited Companies, being six months late in filing your Financial Statements with Companies House costs £ 1,500. VAT return’s also have high penalties for late payments and submissions. If you are paying tax, then the case for having a focused and proactive tax specialist like Steve Bentley in your corner is inescapable, especially when you consider that there are a number of schemes like the VAT Flat Rate Scheme designed specifically to help small businesses pay their tax. It’s the sort of knowledge that Steve has at his fingertips. As he points out, “it’s hard enough trying to make a profit without always having to worry about the tax position. I let my clients get on with doing what they do best, which is running their businesses, while I obtain the best possible tax position for them.” The role of advising businesses rather than simply doing their accounts is a key part of the Bentley’s service. In fact, although Steve is always available to offer his specialist and experienced advice to clients as and when it is required – he’ll “always take the call,” as he puts it – all clients www.sussexliving.com

advice to help businesses move forward. get a Business Review and a Taxation Review with their annual financial statements. His assessment of the company’s position, its resources, its weaknesses and its prospects for growth can make a significant contribution to the planning of company strategy going forward. All this is available to Bentley’s’ clients as part of their fixed fee agreement which ensures that clients don’t have to worry about being charged for every phone call or meeting. There are no surprises about costs. Steve is passionate about what his practice does as much as the standards they set themselves in performance delivery. “We are genuinely independent,” he says, “and totally focused on what we know and do best: accountancy and taxation services. When I visit a client, he knows that I’m going to talk about the areas of his business where I am qualified to help. But if the client needs advice on HR, Marketing, Health & Safety or Legal Services, then I have the contacts that I am happy to refer the client to.” A good example of this single minded focus is the Start-Up Business Package. With so many people finding it difficult to gain employed work or being laid off in the current uncertain economic climate, more and more people are taking to working freelance or setting up their own businesses. Now, with Steve’s help and the Start-Up Package, they can concentrate on running their new business without worrying about legislation or accountancy issues. “This is a very stressful time for anybody in business,” says Steve. “So now, more than ever, it’s important that we give the very best advice possible at the sort of price people can afford.” To this end, Bentley’s offers a free initial consultation to establish exactly what a company needs and they will, in turn, without charge, produce a fully costed written proposal tailored to the potential client’s circumstances. So there’s nothing to be lost in simply enquiring. As I said once before in this magazine, I believe all small and medium sized businesses need a Steve Bentley.

flocks up from the Downs to graze around the Weald, but others were organised industrial powerhouses of huge importance to the country as a whole. At Cansiron near East Grinstead, the years of intensive Roman iron ore mining, roasting and smelting have left the soil black with ancient charcoal. And it’s here, with archaeologist and author Jeremy Hodgkinson as my guide, that I begin my third and final walk in the footsteps of the Roman. “Now, you have to imagine the stream on our right to be much wider than it is today,” says Jeremy as we ramble past woodland towards an open area of pasture. I can already see the humps and banks in the field ahead that are all that remains on the surface of a once thriving industry. “Only half of this field was used for iron working, and we think that was because the stream would have run through the other half. A survey indicated the presence of a possible jetty, and it’s possible that the finished product would have been transported out of here by boat.” I’ve been shown so many Roman sites where the only sign of ancient activity is a vague bump in the ground that it’s exciting to come across remains that I can actually see and touch. An obliging mole has left a trail of earth piles across the field, and every single one of them is riddled with warped chunks of iron slag. There are pieces of orange pottery too, mixed up in the charcoal-blackened earth, and crumbling handfuls of Roman roof tile. These weren’t just an industrial workings – it was a settlement. “Cansiron is one of the largest sites in the area,” explains Jeremy, banging his probe against

the ground with a satisfying metallic noise. “The Romans would have had a big interest here, probably employing locals to mine and smelt the ore. Up there, on the hill, was the digging site. Once it was out of the ground, the ore would have been roasted to make it easier to reduce in the furnace and then smelted in a small furnace called a bloomery.” Ready for working, the iron ‘blooms’ would have been loaded up onto boats or carts and transported to where they were needed. It’s no coincidence that two of the most important north-to-south Roman roads – the London to Lewes Way and the London to Brighton Way – ran through the Wealden area. Both roads converge on Southwark in South London, then a cluster of river islands and, significantly, one of the biggest centres of

metalworking in Roman Britain. This was where much of the smelted iron would have been sent, but the waste products of the process remained in Sussex for an entirely different purpose. “There’s an exposed section of the London to Lewes Way down here,” says Jeremy, as our walk takes us past Holtye and down a footpath marked as the property of the Sussex Archaeological Society. “Rumour has it that it was originally discovered when lightning struck this field and burned away a line of the crop because there was so much iron slag in the road below. The Romans used the waste from the industry around here to create a hard, durable surface that runs for about 20 miles through the area – it’s an innovative thing to do with an otherwise useless product.” A 250-metre section of the road was exposed in the 1930s, but nowadays much of it has been re-turfed to protect against weathering. Even so,

you can still see the edges of the metalled Roman surface and, if you look closely, the wheel marks left by ancient carriages. There are other areas in Mid Sussex where you can spot signs of Roman roads – including an agger off the A22 near Felbridge and at Roman Road car park in the Ashdown Forest – but nowhere is the surface so visible and well preserved as it is here. Our walk, we take a short trip down the road to a fascinating site in the Ashdown Forest where the Wealden Iron Research Group has established an experimental bloomery. The idea is to replicate the bloomery smelting process used in the Weald during the Roman occupation. Experiments have shown it to be a timeconsuming and laborious procedure that yields relatively impure iron. Nevertheless, this was the industry that underpinned the economy in this area from prehistoric times until the end of the medieval period. The iron workings, established on an industrial scale by the Romans, shaped the landscape through deforestation and construction and helped to create the Sussex that you see today. And that has to make them one of the most important things that the Romans ever did for us. With many thanks to Jeremy Hodgkinson for giving his time and knowledge so freely. His book, The Wealden Iron Industry, is a mine of information about Roman industrial sites across the Weald. Find it at www.thehistorypress.co.uk

HoMe & garden

Fancy a bit of sunshine in your life? enjoy the summer while it’s here and make the most of your outdoor spaces at home.

Taking the inside out

Chill-Out Zones Does your patio and garden promote relaxation? How much quality time do you spend in it? It doesn’t take much to make a few improvements that can make a world of difference to the feelgood vibe of your outdoor spaces. The first thing to tackle is any garden untidiness – mow and edge the lawn, give your patio a power wash, refresh your tubs and beds. Patios tend to lead naturally from the home, so make sure the transition from indoor to outdoor happens with minimal effort.

Accentuate colour and décor themes from your home – this could be floral shapes, vintage, natural elements or architectural structure. You could paint trellises in bold colours, hang mirrors or weatherproof pictures, invest in a patio heater, chiminea or firepit, decorate fences or lawn areas with solar lights and highlight plants, bushes or trees with solar up-lighters…. making your garden a homely, cosy place to spend time in. From your patio, create links

to other areas of the garden. A flowing path down the edge of the lawn helps highlight plants and flowers. Place stepping stones which draw your eye to a pergola or sun trap – with well positioned sunloungers to top up your tan! You can easily create different ‘zones’ by screening areas with large planters, willow screens or pots – this means that if you want a switch around, it’s easy to do. Bamboo works well as a backdrop or screen – tall stems give you privacy, but still allow light through. continued on page 16 SuSSex Living July 2013

Outdoor Kitchen If your patio is large enough, you may decide to have an outdoor cooking area, to really make the most of alfresco dining. There’s a vast choice of appliances and gadgets on offer – built-in or woodfired ovens, free-standing ranges, grill stations, or the good old barbecue. From grill to plate with minimum delay – you could almost be on holiday!

Dining Out Treat your outdoor dining table as you would inside and accessorise accordingly. Brightly coloured crockery to reflect your personal style, a summery tablecloth, candles, flowers or little pots of herbs, lanterns for ambience... the choice is yours. If you want to make your guests really feel at home, garden furniture that looks tired and past it may not be suitable. Instead, look around for patio furniture that is built to last, that will maintain its looks for years to come, that stays attractive despite exposure to the elements, and is easy to look after. And don’t forget to dress your outdoor furniture to reflect your personal style. Plush cushions in designer hues evoke the same comfort and style as fine upholstered furniture indoors. Just add your outdoor cooked food, a little wine and music, then sit back and enjoy the summer. continued on next page

Take the Plunge

A garden room can be whatever

you wish it to be: A calm retreat, a play house or teenage den, a home office or creative studio.

There’s nothing like water to relax and soothe body and mind. A swimming pool may be a status symbol for many, but look beyond keeping up with the Joneses and you may find that the affordable luxury of being able to soak and swim your worries away is just what you’ve always wanted! If you have the space, there are various options: above-ground pools, semi-sunken ones or pools that are flush with the ground, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Contact a reputable pool company for expert advice on what might work best for you. If space is an issue, why not consider a spa or plunge pool? You will still get the therapeutic and refreshment benefits at a fraction of the price. Hot tubs are another popular choice. An affordable option for many, the warm water means all-round use, and they’re perfect for socialising! Taking it one step further, how about splashing out on an outdoor shower? No longer the preserve of exotic beach clubs, garden showers have really come into their own, both poolside and as a fun garden accessory on their own.

Garden Rooms Wouldn’t it be lovely to have more space, without the bother of a home extension? A summer house or garden room could be the answer. Depending on the size and height of the structure, you may not even need planning permission. A garden room can be whatever you wish it to be. A calm retreat to get away from the kids? A play house or teenage den to keep the darlings out of the house? Perhaps a home office or creative studio is what you really need? Or how about a sauna and/or spa to really boost your wellbeing? Garden structures can be designed in many styles, ranging from contemporary cool to quaint cottage delight. Make sure you have power, light and heating installed for all-year-round appeal. Look at your garden, patio and outdoor spaces with fresh eyes; a few small changes can make a big difference to how you live in your home. With a little bit of creativity and versatility, your garden can be everything you want it to be.

gardening

What’s the difference between a

good gardener and one that is truly great?

Left: Claude Monet’s garden and pond in Giverny, France.

Blooming Times

There are three things that truly great gardeners possess: the most obvious being excellent practical gardening skills, combined with a broad knowledge of plants. Much can be learnt from books, but the single attribute that separates mere mortals from the pantheon of horticultural deities such as Beth Chatto, Fergus Garrett and Roy Strong cannot be taught: vision. Born with poor eyesight, Gertrude Jekyll abandoned ideas of becoming a professional painter, choosing instead to ‘paint with plants’ – her chronic short-sightedness mattering far less when given a canvas of several acres to play with. Her naturalistic planting schemes with their soft colour combinations remind me of Monet’s later paintings – an old man, plagued by cataracts, yet still painting his beloved garden as his vision retreated into hazy fluidity. Bizarrely, his failing eyesight shrunk his painterly world whilst simultaneously adding another dimension to it. If your garden in July and August displeases, never mind – it’s probably not your fault. Any fool can make a garden look good in spring, but only elite gardeners can use the boiling, dusty days of high summer to maximum advantage. Great gardens never pause for breath, using these tricky months to mount a campaign of domination to take them into September and October. Their herbaceous borders,

already tall and lush in June, are hurtling skyward now, with colours building towards an explosion of autumnal brilliance. Great artists and gardeners share a comprehensive understanding of light: Rembrandt, depicting the different play of light on a velvet cloak or a pewter mug; or a Turner landscape, showing a chilly dawn or warm sunset. Great gardeners know that a flower at 8am looks completely different when backlit at 8pm and they plan accordingly for it. If you can’t bear to look at your own garden in high summer, I suggest you visit some great gardens to see how they do it. Don’t go thinking this is a leisure activity; serious garden visiting is hard work. Wear your comfiest shoes; take a notebook and pencil but leave your preconceptions at home. Look carefully at plants you think you don’t like: “Wisdom means overcoming prejudice,” said Christopher Lloyd. Walk slowly, concentrate and look – I mean really look. Don’t casually waft by and don’t take anything for granted. My eyesight is probably just as bad as Jekyll’s was, but I’m lucky to be living in an age of advanced optometry – access to multifocal lenses and titanium frames would have surely sent Jekyll into raptures. Despite these technological advances, I have a nasty suspicion that I will forever be stumbling around in the fog, whereas those Titans of Colour show us that myopia need not be a barrier to great vision.

To Bee or not to Bee‌ everyone knows that our bees are in trouble, but how much do we really know about these crucial pollinators that have lived beside us for every step of our long evolution?

A female honeybee sets out from her hive beneath the Downs to forage. She follows landmarks, including roads and woodlands, heading slowly north in search of a patch of suitable flowers. She travels across vast fields, empty of forage and devoid of hedgerow. Finding nothing, she flies on, searching for openpetalled flowers that signal with colour or markings, acting like landing strips to guide her to their sweet centre. Eventually, she finds a row of colourful gardens and begins gathering nectar while picking up and depositing pollen as she brushes flower against flower. Finally, she is full, having gathered half her weight in nectar, her main energy source, or pollen, which provides her with protein and minerals. She makes a slow flight back to the hive and, once there, decides that the flower patch she discovered earlier was so productive that her sisters must be told of its whereabouts. She begins to dance, vibrating her abdomen from side to side; several older bees and an underemployed forager or two find the exact direction and distance of the flowers from her movements. She adjusts the angle of her body according to the time of day to accommodate the changing height of the sun. The pollen she collected has an overall brown colour indicating a swathe of clover. Had it been pale yellow, it would be evidence of a foray into a rape field, which are increasingly common across the Sussex landscape. From this one fictional flight of a single bee we can learn a few of the problems bees have to face in their daily lives. With the destruction of hedgerow, insecticide use and the proliferation of monoculture, plant diversity has plummeted, leaving bees to cope continued on next page SuSSex Living July 2013

with a bland semi-desert comprising a few crops with none of the colourful abundance provided by traditional wildflower meadows. Imagine going to the supermarket to find row upon row of pasta – no fish, no vegetables, a few pieces of fruit here and there, a slice of cheese and a single shelf of olives, if you’re lucky. But wait; the olives are covered in poison and yet they look so tempting… Considered this way, it seems obvious that plentiful, varied, pesticide-free forage of the right kind is what our bees desperately need, and this is where we, as individuals and collectively, can really help. Researchers at the Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects at the University of Sussex are not only breeding disease-resistant hygienic bees who remove infected individuals from their colony, they’re also decoding bee dances and researching which garden plants are chosen by bees and where the bees are finding them. The role of the gardener is becoming increasingly important as bees depend more and more on the variety provided by intensively cultivated gardens across urban and rural areas of England. I spoke to bee researcher Karin Alton, who recommends going to a local garden centre, nature reserve or even a neighbour’s garden to

observe which flowers are attracting the most bees. Single, open flowers are best – in fact, anything that is easy for a bee to reach. Many multi-headed, showy flowers in our public parks are useless to bees as they cannot negotiate the complex petal arrangement. Karin recommends planting for the longest possible growing season, since bees will forage from February until the end of autumn. Research has shown that late summer is when bees have to travel furthest to forage, so try to plant plenty of flowers that bloom during July, August and September and remember that bee-friendly plants are not more expensive or less attractive than other varieties. It’s best to avoid overhybridised versions and stick to original species where possible. Bees thrive on traditional cottage gardens, stuffed with variety and seasonal species. Bees will travel up to 12km from the hive in search of suitable forage, so the more varied your ‘bee larder’, the more likely they will return to feed once they have found you. A pond is a real help to visiting bees. They alight on an edge to drink; it’s best to have gently sloping edges or pieces of wood leading into the water, so the bees can haul themselves out, should they topple

in. If you still want a lawn, a clover lawn is a good compromise and bees love it. Leave dandelions, buttercups, daisies and other wildflowers that spring up to grow among the grass. Ivy is a particularly important source of late season winter food. Herbs are useful to bees and ourselves, fruit trees, hazel for early catkins, open-flowered roses, hawthorn, sedums, knapweeds, sunflowers, poppies…..any list is always going to be incomplete. A much better idea is to incorporate as many types of long-blooming, easy-to-reach flowers that spread across three seasons as you can find. If you are sowing a wildflower mix, use between 3-5g per square metre, but reduce the mix to 1g per square metre if you’re choosing a single type of seed instead. We can go further than simply providing nectarrich species. By buying organic food, we refuse to support neonicitinoid pesticides, which block specific neural pathways in insects’ central nervous systems. Bees are particularly vulnerable, as these pesticides impair their communication, homing and foraging ability, flight activity and their ability to discriminate by smell, as well as affecting their immune systems. Honey bees have a higher number of neurological receptors than other insects, and the use of these insecticides is thought to thwart the bees’ ability to communicate and function collectively. Community projects are becoming increasingly important to impart awareness, particularly to urban youngsters. Members of the East Grinstead in Bloom committee have established a new wildflower meadow on a partly steep site adjoining East Grinstead train station, which will be seen by all

railway users. In an effort to attract bees and wildlife, local wildflower specialist and botanist Steve Alton has supplied a special seed mix he calls the ‘Flower Power’ mix. It contains familiar garden plants that have been tested over 20 years for bee-attractant qualities. California poppies, flax, cornflower, borage, marigold and clarkia are just some of the seeds in the varied mix of over 40 wildflower species. Passers-by have already commented positively on the project – an indication of the supportive public response that usually accompanies verge or ‘wasteland’ wildflower planting by groups or councils. Should you decide to investigate keeping your own hive, there are local courses you can take, including those at Plumpton College. The Brighton and Lewes Beekeepers offer advice and practical help while meeting regularly throughout the year, and the Natural Beekeeper Association and the British Beekeepers Association operate throughout the UK. Even though this year we’ve lost just over a third of our honey bees, with increased public awareness and government intervention we should be able to avoid the situation that has developed in parts of China, where people are having to hand-pollinate pear and apple orchards due to the mysterious loss of essential pollinators. We can all do something for bees; we depend on them for pollinating our food crops, and surely it is our responsibility to provide forage for them to continue their invaluable part in the environment we share.

Those who are familiar with the village of Lingfield, will no doubt have visited the 15th-century church of St Peter and St Paul. If you don’t live in the village, you may not be aware that as well as the churchyard which surrounds the building and which is home to a great many ancient graves and headstones, there is a much larger area on the eastern side of the church, over the road near the Star Inn. This piece of land, which is approximately two and a half acres, is known as the Lower Churchyard and has been used for burials since it was bought by the parish more than 100 years ago. It is a beautiful area, enclosed in hazel and holly hedges with a winding path, which will take you from Church Road to halfway down Baker’s Lane and on to Station Road. It is a great wildlife sanctuary and habitat for toads, frogs, woodpeckers, field mice and other small creatures. On the first Saturday morning of each month, a group of volunteers congregate here at 9.30 with strimmers, rakes, clippers and wheelbarrows and

It is hard work but very enjoyable, and the volunteers often stop to talk to passing dog walkers or those who come to tend the graves. There is a break for coffee and biscuits under the big fir tree and then, at 12.30, everybody heads to the pub for a pint or two. The grass never seems to stop growing or the hedges

Hilarious outdoor theatre

The brilliant Rude Mechanical Theatre Company will perform their delightful and hilarious new play ‘Harlequin Goes to the Moon’ in Ditchling and Wivelsfield this summer. These white-faced clown-like travelling players were described in The Guardian as ‘a crucial part of our theatre ecology’ and in The Independent on Sunday as ‘consistently captivating’; they should not be missed. All the actors are experienced full time professional actor / musicians working regularly on television and in theatres around the country and perform in a very physical style combining mime and traditional movements dating back to the Italian Renaissance. The play, like all this company’s work, is brand new and has a new score performed live by the actors, who are multipleinstrumentalists. “Catalina, the daughter of the great astronomer Il Dottore Pazzo, is

madly, desperately, in love with the delicious Federico, the son inconveniently of Il Magnifico Buco del Culo, a Florentine banker who has reinvented the meaning of ‘mean’. No banker before, nor since, was meaner, more spiteful, more greedy, more inexplicably nastier than he! In fact, he has forbidden them to touch even their little fingers – and to ensure this does not happen he has threatened his servant, Harlequin, and his wife’s maid, Colombina, with ‘death by stretching’ if they should allow it to happen. No way will Federico marry the daughter of an astronomer who is so poor his pants are as ragged as a halfplucked chicken! Harlequin, of course, is terrified - Who wouldn’t be? – so, decides to steal Pazzo’s moon ship, a contraption of rotating cogs and wheels, levers, paddles and sails, and fly to the moon where he will no longer be kicked around, but will set up his own government, become Emperor and make the rules. The stable boy, Paglia, who spends most of his time gazing at the moon like a smitten hare, takes little persuading to go with him.” Hilarious antics follow. The play will be performed in Ditchling on the Village Green on Wednesday, 3 July and in Wivelsfield at the Recreation Ground on Sunday 4 August. Both performances will start at 7.30pm (but open from 6pm for picnics). Seats are not provided, so bring your own chairs or rugs. The play is aimed at adults but will be enjoyed by more mature children.

The six charity volunteers organise a number of local fundraising activities every year and have clocked up more than 115 years’ support between them. But they are not resting on their laurels; on receiving their certificates committee Chair Jill Thomas said they had lots planned for the future and would love to attract some new recruits to help! Money raised by the committee members helps fund vital medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Among the events they organise is the annual Peter James Golf Classic, supported by the Sussex-based crime novelist, which last year raised £11,000. This year’s event will be held at Haywards Heath Golf Club on 11

September and the committee is currently looking for sponsorship and raffle prizes for the day. Other events in the pipeline include a lunch and a flower arranging demonstration. The longest serving member Hazel Gubbin has been raising money for 37 years, while Hedvig Bodley has clocked up 32 years. Sarah Baldock, a past committee chair, has been involved for 26 years and Jill has 13 years under her belt. Meanwhile, Janet Pickett and Paula Richardson are relative newcomers, having so far served five and two years respectively with the committee. Sarah Stevenson, the charity’s Community Fundraising Manager for the South East, said: “We’re very proud to present the committee with their awards in recognition of their exceptional commitment and dedication over so many years. It is thanks to the extraordinary hard work of volunteers like them that the

charity has been able to establish such a long and distinguished track record of funding lifechanging research to help babies and children.” For further information on the charity please visit www.action. org.uk. LOCAL St Lawrence Fair

This year the St Lawrence Fair in Hurstpierpoint, on 6th July, will be 700 years old. Since the 14th century, the village has celebrated the feast of its patron saint with this event, making it one of the oldest in the United Kingdom. King Edward II granted a charter which allowed this one fair a year to be held. The fair takes the form of a traditional summer fete, with a procession through the High Street and arena events, which take place on South Avenue recreation ground in the centre of the village. Harris Brothers Funfair has been an attraction since the early years of the last century and is pitched in the village for a week before. The 700th anniversary was seen as an opportunity to place a permanent marker, which has been created by local artist Sylvia Thornhill. The work ‘Children of the Fair’ shows a circular ring of children, each one dressed in a costume representing a century of the Fair’s existence. The sculpture will be unveiled on 29th June.

Arthritis Care Arthritis Care (Haywards Heath & District) will be pleased to welcome back Vanessa Forbes to their meeting on 22nd July for a Chairobics session. Vanessa takes a number of classes in rhythmic movement and chairobics at various venues in Mid Sussex. The classes are suitable for all ages. Chairobics may be defined as an innovative sit-down exercise class, providing a mix of low-impact aerobic routines customised to meet the needs of those taking part. It may include gentle stretches and isometric types of movements, all of which are performed with background music while sitting down. It is

can beneficial to those suffering from all forms of arthritis. The Haywards Heath and District group of Arthritis Care is open to anyone in the Mid Sussex area suffering from any form of arthritis and/or wishing to support the charity’s work. Group meetings are usually held every 4th Monday of the month at 7pm at The Yews, Boltro Road, Haywards Heath, and include a variety of talks covering medical and general interest topics. Other social events, including monthly tea afternoons, are arranged throughout the year. 777 is a fundraising organisation from Henfield, formed last year primarily to help raise funds for a charity called CLIC Sargent, who provides fantastic support and services for children with cancer. It helps the children and their families through the treatment and aftercare and, sadly, in some cases bereavement. 777 got involved with the charity because of a little boy called Ashton, who was being treated for leukaemia, and his family were receiving invaluable support from CLIC Sargent, but like so many things this was dependent upon the generosity of others. Last year, 777 raised over £28,000 by running, swimming, sky diving and almost any crazy thing that we could do to raise awareness and money. The fantastic news is that on Friday 14th June Ashton got the all clear and, for the first time in his life, he has no hospital appointments scheduled. Sadly, there will always be another Ashton who will need

the same support and hopefully get the same results, so 777 are continuing their efforts to raise funds and awareness. This year, some of the team have already completed the Mad Mudder, and now we are preparing for 3 cycle rides: the first is a 60-mile night ride from London to Brighton (13th July), the second is the Prudential London-Surrey 100-mile ride (4th August) and the third one is a 75-mile off-road LondonBrighton (21st September) ride. We will give half the money raised from the first and last ride to the British Heart Foundation, but all the funds raised from the big 100-mile ride go to CLIC Sargent. Tracey Prescott and Adrian Hillman are doing all 3 of the rides and training is going well at the moment. If you would like to support our efforts, log onto www.777fundraising.com and follow the links via the ‘donate’ button to the Virgin Giving page, or call into Rushfields Plant Centre in Poynings and take part in our silent auction, or just make a donation – every little helps.

Pyecombe Grant Awarded The Fundraising Committee for The Pyecombe Building Fund are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a £20,000 grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust. Dr Caroline Currer, Vicar at Pyecombe Church, said, “We are delighted that The Veolia Environmental Trust has awarded this grant which will enable us to make the church more accessible and comfortable for the whole community.”

The grant awarded to the church means that we are now in sight of the £138,000 building target. This is fantastic news for the fund and we are looking forward to working with the Veolia projects team to develop our final plans and start to get the project off the ground. We now need the support of the local community and council to help us bring this much-needed extension to completion.

Brin, a four-legged war hero, will be the main attraction at The Mewes Veterinary Clinic’s Open Day on 13th July.

One of the finalists in the Crufts ‘Friends for Life’ competition this year, Brin, and his owner Sally Baldwin, will be telling the remarkable story of how a stray Afghan street dog came to find a loving home in Mid Sussex. Found abandoned, starving and wandering on a road in Helmand by the Coldstream Guards, Brin alerted two soldiers to the fact that they were about to step on a hidden bomb that would have killed them both. He became a loyal patrol dog and friend to the unit, but was captured by the Taliban. It was only during a daring mission by Afghanistan Special Forces later that year that he was found alive. When his unit was due to return home, he faced being killed and a worldwide campaign was launched to save him. He was rescued by the charity Nowzad, and he and Sally now tour the UK to raise much-needed funds for them. “Having survived being captured by the Taliban, he has made the most loving pet. He is one in a million,” said Sally. Nowzad relieves the suffering of animals in Afghanistan, including companion animals, working equines, abandoned dogs and cats and other animals in need of care and attention. The charity provides rescue, education and rehabilitation facilities for the care and treatment of these animals, who would otherwise have no way out. For a small donation to Nowzad visitors can experience a guided tour behind the scenes at the Mewes Veterinary Clinic and meet Brin and Sally. They can also win £200 worth of pet food, as well as Brin memorabilia and signed books in the Big Raffle, take part in a ‘Name the Mewes Mascot’ competition, and have their pet’s portrait taken by an animal portrait photographer (proceeds to Nowzad). ALSAR Search Dogs Sussex and the Haywards Heath and District Canine Society will be giving demonstrations. Local charities Pets as Therapy and WRAP Wildlife Rescue and Protection will be on paw to promote their services, as will local charity The Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare. The Clinic will be giving

guided tours of the premises, including demonstrations of their new orthopaedic and ultrasound equipment. The newly refurbished lab and dental facilities will be open to view, and cake stalls will provide some welcome sustenance throughout the afternoon. The Mewes Veterinary Clinic has always focused on the animals’ needs, with their ‘one pet, one vet’ system and generous 15-minute appointment slots. Currently, clients who recommend a friend to the Clinic get 50% off a cat, rabbit or dog vaccine. The Open Day is a great opportunity to talk to the team, meet a very special dog and discover what positive work is being done by and for animals throughout Sussex, whilst raising funds for JustGiving charity of the year, Nowzad.

Here comes the sun MIRROR MIRROR MIRROR on the wall...

The sun is shining and the holidays are fast approaching, so what do we do? Make a start on our suntan, of course.

A bit of colour gives our pasty European complexion a healthy glow and our whole body a huge confidence lift. Suddenly, the little pastel top that looked so cute in the shop actually complements your skin tone, while white, the undisputed colour of summer, only looks good on tanned skin. And when was the last time your eye colour really popped? Bet it was on last year’s beach holiday when you were a relaxed shade of latte. So what’s the best way to achieve that cherished sun-kissed look? The old guard will get the sun lounger out, slap on some SPF8 for the first few days’ sun-soaking ‘to get the skin used to the sun’, soon dropping down to SPF2 to take full advantage of the impact of every ray. Oh yes, they still exist. Can you believe that some even hold on to the myth that you have to burn before you tan! Obviously, sunshine is a wonderful thing – the world smiles when the sun comes out. It helps our bodies synthesize valuable Vitamin D, it’s helpful for acne and a range of dermatological conditions and, of course, it makes us look and feel healthy. Relaxing in the sun, perhaps with a good book or

34

SuSSex Living July 2013

some music, is one of the great joys of summer, just as slapping on some sun block and wearing a hat is one’s of summer’s non-negotiables. Should you need it, Cancer Research UK have a very useful website, www.sunsmart.org.uk, for invaluable – potentially life-saving! – advice on sun protection. Even when you’re not purposefully tanning, it’s important to watch your sun exposure, so it’s good to know that most reputable skin care and make-up products now have added SPF protection. But if you’re after a proper tan, it’s safest to go the self-tan route. Whether you prefer lotions, creams or sprays, the formulations are getting better all the time, meaning fewer Tango tans and – oh joy – reliable, streak-free results. If the mess and bother of self-tanning at home doesn’t appeal, check out local beauty and tanning salons to tan you up before you go abroad. A spray tan takes minutes to apply and lasts for up to 10 days, fading gradually. And it doesn’t break the bank. Tan-tastic!

Brian gubbin is Chairman of The League of Friends of Hurstwood Park, and a more committed fundraiser you’d be hard pressed to find.

Vital support for Hurstwood Park

Hurstwood Park Hospital in Haywards Heath is a centre of excellence for neurology and neurological surgery. Officially called the Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre, it meets the needs of patients suffering disorders of the brain and nervous system, and it has a nationwide reputation for the quality of its care. In the last year alone, Hurstwood Park provided around 13,000 outpatient appointments and conducted over 1,200 operations. Its presence in Sussex has saved literally thousands of lives since it was evacuated from London to Haywards Heath during the war – yet we came very close to losing it. In spite of the fact that it is now, and was then, the only operating hospital for brain injuries in southeast England, in 1994 it was proposed that the centre should close and its skills and facilities be transferred back to London. However, Virginia Bottomley, the then Secretary of State for Health, had reckoned without the people of Sussex, supported by Headway (the national head injuries charity) and the League of Friends of Hurstwood Park, the local charity which directly supports the hospital’s work. Chairman of the League of Friends then was Brian Gubbin, and it is a position he still holds.

In September 1996, it was announced to widespread jubilation that Hurstwood Park was saved . It was one of

the proudest moments of his life. SuSSex Living July 2013

Brian had been asked to join the committee of the Friends in 1992 and became Chairman in 1994, just in time to face the crisis that was developing over the hospital’s future. He was, quite simply, the right man in the right place at the right time. Brian became one of the spearheads of the Save Our Surgery (SOS) campaign, and he triggered a huge groundswell of public outrage over the proposal. The Evening Argus set up a ‘Hurstwood Park Hotline’; the Mid Sussex Times printed a petition and asked readers to collect signatures and send them in. Everybody who was anybody, including MPs in the South East and celebrities such as Spike Milligan, Karen Pickering, Carla Lane and Sir Patrick Moore, publicly spoke out. If Virginia Bottomley hadn’t heard the old adage ‘we’m from Sussex and we won’t be druv’, she certainly found out when, in July 1995, Brian Gubbin and a deputation of SOS supporters went to Downing Street to present a petition with over 200,000 signatures. When I asked how the meeting with Virginia Bottomley went, Brian laughed and replied: “She said ‘You can’t talk to me like that’ but, of course, I just had, because she needed to know.” The fight went on for some 18 months until, in September 1996, it was announced to widespread jubilation that the campaigners had won and Hurstwood Park was saved. Brian says it was one of the proudest moments of his life.

By the end of his first year, they had raised £22,000 for purchasing

equipment for the hospital and improving facilities for staff, patients and visitors. A large genial gentleman with a personality to match, there is no disguising the fact that Brian’s life has been one of service to others. When he was invited to become Chairman of the League, he began to devote his considerable energy to taking the League of Friends “onwards and upwards.” as he had promised. There was, as he described it, a “minimal” amount in the charity’s coffers when he took over, but by the end of his first year, they had raised £22,000, all of which was devoted to purchasing equipment for the hospital and improving facilities for staff, patients and visitors. In 2013, they passed the £2,250,000 mark! To have helped in raising 2 1/4 million pounds in direct support of the vital resource that is Hurstwood Park Hospital is, I believe, a fantastic achievement. Brian, however, is swift to praise the hard work put in by the Friends, previous patients, continued on next page

their relatives and, of course, the amazingly generous public contributions. Donations come from an astonishingly diverse range of sources including grateful individuals, fundraising groups, charitable trusts, Wills and estates, and they can be as modest as a couple of hundred pounds, or as generous as tens of thousands of pounds. The money is spent on an extraordinary range

of facilities and equipment. Reading the list on the Friends notice board inside the hospital, I was struck not only by how many different groups of people benefit from the fund, but the strange, almost exotic miscellany of items that appear on the list: A paper shredder costing £134; an image intensifier costing £69,500; patients’ Xmas presents; a sixslice toaster, and so it goes on. On the list are chairs for the waiting room; a refurbished rest room for relatives; a neuro-navigation system; gardens and a conservatory; a microscope… I’m sure there must be a cuddly toy in there somewhere! I was lucky enough to spend some time chatting to Angela Jenkinson, Matron of Neurosurgery. She runs the three-monthly meetings at which all the heads of departments bid for items they would like. Once Angela has balanced and moderated their requests, she liaises with Brian to see if the League of Friends can help. It is his proud boast that he has never yet said ‘no’. On 1st June 2011, Brian Gubbin was awarded the prestigious Order of Mercy by Lord Lingfield, President of The League of Mercy. He received it on the recommendation of the Charity and Hospital staff. In presenting the award, Lord Lingfield said: “Mr Brian Gubbin has done extraordinary work in the service of others. He is a marvellous example of someone who has given wonderful service to his community.” His words are echoed by everybody involved with Hurstwood Park Hospital, The League of Friends and Brian’s legion of friends and admirers throughout the county.

Small Dole Walk A peaceful walk through

low-lying meadows, this route takes us along a stretch of the Downs Link and the River Adur, near Henfield and Small Dole. From the car park at Woods Mill on the A2037, turn left onto the main road for a few yards and, just before a bridge and ‘30 mph’ sign, turn right through a kissing gate to follow a wide grassy track. Where this track ends, ignore the path off to your right and carry on ahead with a stream on your left through low-lying meadows. Eventually, go over a stile beside a gate to join the Downs Link path. Turn left to follow the Downs Link and, just before the bridge which crosses the river, go left over a stile to follow the east bank of the River Adur. The Adur begins life as two separate branches: the Eastern Adur rises on Ditchling Common, and the Western Adur rises at Slinfold to the west Horsham. They combine at Betley Bridge just west of Henfield. At one time, the river was navigable for large boats up as far as Steyning where there was a large port but, over time, the river valley became silted up and the port was re-established in the deeper waters at Shoreham-by-Sea. The imposing building away to your left is Stretham Manor, a Grade II listed building in the parish of Henfield.

To continue the walk, carry on along the east bank of the river, ignoring a signed path off to your left. At the point where the river bends sharp right, go left over a stile just before a metal gate. Follow along a right-hand field edge to go over another stile to join a gravel track where you should carry on ahead before going right to cross a field and into Horton Wood. On emerging from the wood, turn right and follow alongside the wood. Go through a metal kissing gate and cross the next field diagonally on a faintly visible path to a gap in the hedge. Cross the next field to join the A2037 at Small Dole near the Post Office. Cross the A2037 to the pavement opposite, turn right, then left into Sands Lane. Just before the entrance to Sands Farm, turn left on a narrow fenced path. At the top of the rise, the path bears right and is squeezed between a large unsightly barn and a fence. The path widens slightly and continued on next page SuSSex Living July 2013

passes through two metal gates. After the second gate, turn left through a further metal gate and walk downhill to cross a footbridge. Just before a second footbridge, turn left on a permissive path (courtesy of the Sussex Wildlife Trust) and follow this alongside the millstream to cross the Weir Bridge and back into the car park at Woods Mill. Alternatively, you can cross the second footbridge and follow the path out to Oreham Common, turning left along Horn Lane to the car park at Woods Mill.

Worryingly, I appear to be wearing out quicker that anybody I know. For example, last week I wanted to buy a knee bandage. The pharmacy had a number of different kinds, so I selected the one on special offer. When I got to the front of the queue, the nice lady behind the counter said in a whispered, sympathetic tone of voice: “I think that one’s more for… you know... athletes?” “And how do you know that I’m not an athlete?” I enquired. The question seemed to cause some ill-mannered sniggering amongst the people standing behind me, but sadly I’m getting used to that sort of behaviour. Recently, the online banking system, in one of its periodic fits of grumpiness, pretended that I was putting in the wrong letters from my secret password and refused to let me into my own account. When I called the helpdesk and explained the problem, the lady sounded a lot like the one in the pharmacy and spoke to me as though I was a seven year old. But it was only when she asked me to write down my secret word and then said: “Starting at the left, write 1 above the first letter, 2 above the second, now 3 above...” that I realised that she thought I was either an imbecile or so old that I’d forgotten how to count. We had a short conversation about today’s educational standards and then, amazingly, my account started working again. Last week, when I pulled into a filling station on the A23, I had barely got out of the car before a very pleasant young man magically appeared at my elbow and enquired politely if I needed help with anything. I thanked him for the offer, but explained that I only wanted to put petrol in and that I was still quite capable of performing that simple task. Come to think of it, I can’t remember the last time anybody asked for proof that I was entitled to an age-related discount on anything from a ski pass to a cinema ticket. I’d really like someone to say ‘You must be joking, Sir. I’ll need to see some ID.’ Sadly, it seems they’re more likely to offer me a chair.

Having just celebrated their 3rd anniversary, and named Hall & Woodhouse regional winners for best pub, the picturesque Snowdrop inn continues to go from strength to strength.

Team p o r d w o n S e c i v r e s r u o y t a

While landlady Sally Jarrett is understandably proud of what they achieved, she is at pains to emphasise that The Snowdrop’s chief asset is her staff. “We are Team Snowdrop,” she tells me. “The pub had been closed for months when we took over. We’ve come up from nothing, and that’s all down to my wonderful team, some of whom have been with me since we opened three years ago.” The Snowdrop has a reputation for delicious homemade food. Head Chef Ryan Haffenden has been part of Team Snowdrop for two years. “Ryan loves the pub as much as I do and, along with training up his kitchen staff, he also supports me on the managerial side, learning how to run the business,” explains Sally. Working alongside Ryan is Sous Chef Oscar and Assistant Charlee, all ably assisted by Charlee’s brother Harry. Ryan’s mum Shirley and his sister Chaz are also on hand to help out, while Paul, Caroline, Jan, Shaun and Alex work front of house. The warm and friendly atmosphere that customers like so much is reflected in the fact that Team Snowdrop is a real family affair. Or perhaps the female touch has something to do with it? Sally has traced the history of the Snowdrop back to at least 1760, discovering that the pub has a history of female landlords! Sally and her team hope to build on their success with

Dear Sussex Living… … On behalf of the Management Committee for the Lingfield Nature Reserves, I am writing to thank you for the article in the April issue. This has created a very positive response of complimentary comments from local residents on an excellent article which promotes both the history of the Reserves and its current activities. It is good to know that Sussex Living is supporting projects such as our Nature Reserves, as it makes people aware of the importance of actively working together to protect these precious green spaces. Julie Hearn, Lingfield Nature Reserves …I received a fair response to the advertorial in April; it was definitely worth the effort. I shall be looking at doing something next year for the spring. Stephen Kinnard, Statues and Ornaments, Handcross … I was particularly interested in your article ‘Secret Sussex Army’ in the June issue. I am glad you were able to access Stewart Angell’s book. Of special local interest is the Operational Base of the Staplefield Patrol which was (and is) located in a wood between Ansty and Bolney and, at least in 1994, was still partially equipped, and Stewart Angell includes some photos of it. The existence of this group was unknown to its parent Home Guard unit despite the fact that at least three men were members of both, including its Leader, Frank Masefield-Baker, later Mayor of Brighton. The Home Guard unit itself performed a useful function in guarding the Balcombe Viaduct, which it is reputed to have done at least in part from the back bar of the recently demolished ‘Fountain Inn’ at Handcross, some four miles away. Peter C Benner, Warninglid @CARTPress @sussexliving @Britresistarch The piece looks fantastic! Thanks very much – hope your readers enjoying hearing more about the #auxunits #ww2 @St Peter & St James A huge thank you to @sussexliving for its great coverage on pages 52 &53 in the June mag. @NikkiSalsa #FF @sussexliving A fantastic local magazine bursting with local events & charities :) xx The magazine with a big heart x

The

last word

Not that we ever doubted it, but June has shown us all that the community spirit is alive and well. When our June distribution nearly didn’t happen due to Phil’s van breaking down just at the crucial time, it wasn’t the ‘knights of the road’ who came to our rescue, but our local garage, Station Road Garage in Hassocks. A big thank you to Chris Bere and the team for helping us out! Frank Salvat, aka Cider Frank, was a well-known Hurst character who passed away recently. What many people didn’t know was that he was also an Olympic athlete back in 1960! It was touching to see the local community coming together to raise funds for giving Frank a good send-off, and some generous donations from people (that includes you, Bruce Stewart!) who had never even met him. If you feel able to make a contribution towards the remaining cost of the wake, do please get in touch. Thanks to our generous clients, Tanis and Carla went to see the ‘fruity humour’ of Cornish comedian Jethro at the Martlets Hall. Thank you to Clare Whitlock of Freedom Leisure for allowing us to broaden our horizons! Lee would like to thank Fiona Malcolm for the tickets to the South of England Show. A great time was had by all. To say that we’re delighted to have Sonya Clare back in the office after her broken foot saga would be an understatement. The office is now buzzing again with her friendly telephone chatter, and her clients can look forward to hearing from her very soon. Finally, we’re going digital! Our new online sales service will launch soon and we are thrilled to welcome Charlotte Stevens to help us make this a success. We want to build on the strength of Sussex Living as the magazine for Mid Sussex – the continued support of our advertisers and readers means everything to us. Thank you.
