Editor’s comment

Is summer on its way? It should be – but if this year has taught us anything so far, it’s to take nothing for granted. While you’re waiting for the sun to shine, why not open the June issue of Sussex Living where you’ll find that we’re being very predictable indeed, bringing you yet more informative and entertaining content, same as we do every month! Amore are a stunning classical vocal quartet that you may well have seen and heard before. They were thrilled to have been asked to sing on the royal barge at last year’s Diamond Jubilee river pageant, so much so that even the terrible weather didn’t put a stop to their performance. Since then, there’s been lots of media attention, and this July they’re coming to Haywards Heath! Lisa de Silva caught up with them, and tells their story on pages 7-12. Everybody loves a secret. So when we were told of a hidden army operating in Sussex, we sent our very own ex-Royal Marine Roger Linn on a reconnaissance mission. Sure enough, he came back with a story of wartime subterfuge and hidden tunnels that’s safe to tell now and, we hope you’ll agree, well worth sharing (pages 55-58). Back in 2013, we’re taking a look at how to blur the boundaries between house and garden in this month’s Home & Garden section. For some easy tips on how to bring the outside in, turn to pages 15-21. The Hurstpierpoint Players are a true village institution. Formed in 1937, they’ve been bringing drama, comedy and panto to their Players Theatre on the High Street year after year. Suzi Reeve talked to Chairman Richard Coney to find out more about them (pages 70-71). The Charity Open Garden season is now in full bloom, and what better way to spend an afternoon in a beautiful garden where someone else has done all the hard work? See pages 25-26 for ideas on where to visit locally. And don’t forget to check our Diary Dates for all those Mid Sussex events you don’t want to miss. Finally, may I take this opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’ to you all for your continued support of Sussex Living. We love producing the magazine for you – do please tell us if you think we’re doing a good job (or not, as the case may be!), by emailing editorial@ sussexliving.com

vocal quartet Amore will be supporting Katherine Jenkins in Haywards Heath in July. But wait: Haven’t we seen them somewhere before?

Amore: Music is the

food of love

Last June, classical quartet Amore made headlines around the world for continuing their Diamond Jubilee performance despite torrential rain. Drenched, cold and with unreadable song sheets, their rousing rendition of Land of Hope and Glory was an iconic moment of the celebrations and a wonderful display of the ‘Great British Spirit’. Performing with the Royal College of Music Chamber Choir, Peter Brathwaite, David Webb, Victoria Gray and Monica McGhee, who make up Amore, were part of the river pageant and nothing, not even atrocious weather conditions, was going to stop them from performing for the Royal Family.

Having discarded their cagoules and umbrellas and resigned themselves to getting very wet, nobody will ever forget their gutsy performance. “When we were first approached by the organisers to be part of the Jubilee celebrations, I remember thinking: it’ll be June, we’ll be on a boat, we can have some cocktails. How wrong was I?” laughs Monica. In fact, when Monica was finally helped off of the boat, she had to be treated by paramedics. Despite this, she still claims that it was one of the most memorable days of her life, a sentiment echoed by the rest of the group. continued on next page SuSSex Living June 2013

“There will be nothing like it in my life ever again,” Peter tells me. “We knew that it would be a prestigious occasion, but seeing the crowds that turned out, and with so much passion, was overwhelming.” The ‘singing in the rain’ image appears to be burnt into the collective consciousness. “Even now, almost a year later, whenever people find out that you were one of the people singing on the boat, you get a spontaneous round of applause,” says David. Yet, Amore are the first to acknowledge that the downpour helped to put them on the map. “We never expected it to be as huge as it was,” explains Victoria. “It was an honour to be singing on a boat which was part of the pageant, but we had no idea the weather would play such a large part in it.” The media loved the story of these singers powering on despite the horrendous weather, and Amore ended up on BBC America and CNN. As Monica remarks, “if it had been sunny, nobody would have remembered us.” The event adds to the sense of destiny that these four young continued on next page

BUILDERS WHO CARE? WHERE’S THE CATCH?

WITH NUTSHELL THERE ISN’T ONE. There’s so often a catch with builders - either they don’t turn up, or they overcharge, or they’re messy and not very pleasant to have around. Welcome to Nutshell’s world. A world without a catch. Sure, we are builders, but unlike any others you might have dealt with. We go about our business in an entirely different way. We’re customer focused for a start. Our aim is to take the stress out of what can be the rather traumatic process of construction. We keep a firm control on budgets and insist on regular meetings with our clients - result - no uncomfortable financial surprises at the end of a project. Then there’s our minute attention to detail - the observation, the cleanliness, the management, the skill and the common courtesies ingrained in all our workforce. people were somehow meant to be, which is also reflected in the fateful way that Amore came to be formed, involving a chance encounter at Starbucks. Having popped in for a coffee, one of Peter’s friends, a tutor at the Royal College of Music, overheard a couple of A&R executives from Warner Brothers Records discussing their quest to find fresh young singers for a British classical group. He reported back to the students, and Victoria saw an opportunity to form such a group with three of her closest friends. “I thought: this is perfect. I already have three friends to make a quartet and as we all know each other. It’s an organic, as opposed to a manufactured, group,” she explains. The friends auditioned, and the Warner team were so impressed by their talent, passion and charisma that Amore were immediately signed to

from similar backgrounds, and there’s something deeper between us than just having a technique a six-album deal. That was just 18 months ago, and with their debut album Stand Together and a string of professional appearances, including the unforgettable Jubilee performance, things are really taking off for the quartet. While Amore love to sing classical music, they did not have the start in life you would normally associate with a love of opera. In fact, their individual stories offer a fascinating insight into how raw talent and hard work, whatever your background, can change your life. When I talk to tenor David Webb, he is not just recovering from running the London Marathon, but also from a 300-mile charity bike ride which he completed the weekend before. 29-year-old David is an avid supporter of charities that can help to change children’s lives through their involvement in music. “Music changed my life. I had a very humble start, growing up in Devon. We had no money, but Exeter Cathedral School did an outreach programme with my primary school. My brother had a beautiful voice, and he auditioned and got in.” Inspired by his brother’s success, David auditioned at the age of 7, but was unsuccessful until two years later, when he was accepted as a chorister. Choral scholarships followed to Plymouth College and Truro Cathedral, where he enjoyed three great years of singing, surfing and playing rugby. From here, David moved to London to the Royal College of Music, where he spent four years training as an undergraduate and two years at the Opera School. “When I auditioned, they stopped me before I’d finished,” he tells me. “I thought: Oh no, I’m rubbish, I’m not going to get in, but they offered me a scholarship on the spot. It was amazing.” Peter Brathwaite, the group’s 29-yearold baritone, first met David 11 years ago when they were both choral scholars at Truro Cathedral. Originally from Manchester, Peter was encouraged to join a choir by his mum to give him more discipline, but his talent shone through and, after Truro, he went to continued on next page

Newcastle University before joining the Royal College as a postgraduate at the Opera School. “At first, singing was just a hobby, like swimming or Kung Fu, but I loved it and didn’t see it as work. I guess I started taking it seriously from the age of 15, when I started having singing lessons.” “I was just a noisy, musical child and, luckily for me, it was something my parents encouraged,” says 25-year-old soprano Monica McGhee. From a small town in Scotland, at the age of seven, Monica started piano lessons and credits her teacher with changing her life. Singing competitions and trumpet playing followed, and Monica attended the Junior Conservatoire of Music in Glasgow, before joining the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) as an undergraduate. It was at her audition to do a Masters in Vocal Performance at the Royal College that she first met Victoria, who is now one of her closest friends. The once painfully shy mezzo soprano, Victoria Gray, used her voice to help find her identity, and she credits the support from her Nottinghamshire school and the Cantamus Girls Choir in encouraging her to take her singing seriously. A lover of musical theatre, 26-year-old Victoria had never even seen an opera until she was 15, when a teacher recognised that her voice would be suited to classical music and suggested she went to a performance. “I went to see Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and from the minute the orchestra started to play, I was captivated. Until then, I’d never even heard a live orchestra play and that was emotional enough, but when they started singing, even though I didn’t understand any Italian, I felt every word they sang. It was like they were doing acrobatics with their voices, and I knew that was what I wanted to do.” Victoria went on to win a scholarship to the Royal College, studying music for four years, followed by a Masters in Vocal Performance. Since forming Amore, the friends have been part of a whirlwind of activity, which has produced an album and a whole series of performances, playing venues as diverse as the Royal Albert Hall, The FA Cup Final at Wembley and the 100 Club on London’s Oxford Street. “The minute we all sang together, we knew that it just worked,” says

Victoria. “We’re all great friends from similar backgrounds, and there’s something deeper between us than just having a technique.” All four maintain successful individual careers alongside Amore and have performed in opera houses all over the world. Performing outside of the group is important as it brings an extra dimension. “Because we’ve all had to look after ourselves as individual performers in the classical world, we can all bring that discipline to Amore. So, at any one time, one of us is pushing or supporting the others to improve the performance and work harder,” explains David.

We hope to ignite something in the audience that makes them want to

listen and explore more opera The quartet also hopes to build on the success of artists such as Katherine Jenkins and Russell Watson in bringing opera to a wider audience. “Many people wouldn’t want to go to an opera house because they think it’s too expensive or intimidating,” explains Peter. “But we hope to ignite something in audiences that makes them want to listen and explore more opera.” As Monica says, “the dream would be to perform an opera where we all take the lead roles, so people who have heard us sing would be encouraged to come along and experience the passion and the magic of an opera for themselves.” Amore will be joining Katherine Jenkins and the National Symphony Orchestra at Victoria Park, Haywards Heath on Saturday 20 July (For tickets: www.itsmagic.org.uk). You can be sure, come rain, wind or hail, they will give it their all. That’s Amore! www.sussexliving.com

During the summer months when days are longer, why not replace heavier curtains with voile or sheer fabrics to make the most of the light and blur the boundaries between inside and out? And don’t forget to throw open your patio doors and feel the summer breeze…

A big wooden kitchen or dining table, natural wood flooring, wicker chairs, sisal rug, bamboo blinds… whatever takes your fancy. Try banning the plastic and go for eco-friendly instead, and see how the ambiance changes. You can also add natural accents to your interior décor. Think bare tree branches, driftwood or forest finds to decorate bare corners of a room or to use as a feature display. colour Harmony Green reminds us of earth and plants, blues of the sky and mellow yellows of the sun and warmth. Take these colours and choose floral wallpaper to give you that summer feeling all year round. There are plenty of botanical prints to choose; from the exotic and intense, to the pretty and delicate or just out-and-out flamboyant. Botanicals, along with insect and butterfly prints, are a big interior trend this year, so you’re bound to find the perfect style for you. It’s an easy way to bring the outside in and achieve that in-harmony-with-nature look. Neutral tones such as whites, beiges and browns make your interior feel fresh and clean. Create moody depth by using wallpaper featuring branches or sculptural looking trees for an enchanted forest feel. They also make an excellent backdrop for furniture made from natural materials including wood and leather. Add an accent of bright blue or green to really make your room pop. If it’s a fresher, neutral look you’re after, stick to paler tones, which will work fabulously with lighter furniture for a modern minimalist look – continue the organic outside theme by incorporating flashes of colour using floral brights on cushions or throws.

Finishing Touches Creating that outdoor feeling need not be difficult or expensive; it can be achieved with the smallest of touches. Carefully positioned rocks and pebbles in bowls or jars, dried seed heads or gorgeous flowers in earthy vases, even large feathers positioned well, hint at the outside world. How about seashells displayed on your sideboard or chest of drawers – the bigger the better – they make a wonderful sculptural statement all of their own. Photo frames made out of natural wood, mother of pearl or stone delicately hint at nature, and pictures of scenery or landscapes symbolise what awaits us in the outside world. Stimulate the senses with incense and essential oil burners or room diffusers. Sounds of beach, raindrops or a gentle breeze are routinely used in luxury spas to promote a feeling of relaxation and feel in tune with nature. Why not try it at home? Our environment has a huge impact on how we think and feel. If you want your surroundings to help you relax, rest and refocus, take inspiration from Mother Nature; she is hard to beat!

To help expand the ambitions for De Novo Flowers further, Ryma is pleased to announce the promotion of Caite Cameron-Bond. Initially, Caite was taken on as Saturday/ have been really busy Part-Time Girl while studying developing the business, for NVQ Levels 2 & 3 at Plumpton College. Caite was awarded second place – a tremendous result! The prestigious event took Caite around the world to participate in various heats of the competition. She took part in exclusive floristry designs classes with esteemed floral S u ss e x L i v i n g June 2013

designers such as Gregor Lersch, and through this gained the highest level of qualification for a florist – a Level 4 NVQ. Now back on home turf, Caite has returned to De Novo Flowers where Ryma and her team are delighted to have Caite’s skill and personality back in the shop. De Novo customers are loving the creative injection that Caite has brought to De Novo, and Ryma is able to continue to build upon the strong design and imaginative element that has always been De Novo’s driving force. Ryma’s keen sense for quality and freshness in all aspects of her flower work and for the highest level of customer service have seen her build De Novo’s reputation as one of the leading florists in Sussex. She is now introducing three new services to the business: www.sussexliving.com

By popular demand: New De Novo Design Flower School Ryma has secured the attractive setting of a Victorian glasshouse on the beautiful Borde Hill Estate to hold her first class for the Design School on Saturday 15th June, 10.30-12.00. This class will focus on table centre design techniques, and wedding table centres in particular. The cost (£47.50 per person) includes flowers and tools needed to complete the table design that Ryma will be teaching. She will also be on hand to provide advice for vases or other containers that you are unsure how to arrange flowers in.

New improved De Novo website and webshop Through denovoflowers.co.uk, you can order flowers online, view weekly special deals and browse galleries of the different types of flower designs that De Novo have already completed.

New reminder service: De Novo Dates Spurred on by a rather high proportion of gentlemen who call/turn up on the days of their anniversaries, desperate to make sure the flowers get delivered urgently so as not to get in trouble with their wives, Ryma decided to set up De Novo Dates. All you have to do is give the De Novo team your important dates (birthdays, anniversaries etc) and they will remind you 7 days and 2 days in advance by email and/or text message to let you know that your flowers are available for collection or delivery. The De Novo team will be able to tell you what flowers you ordered last time, what your card message was and check to see if you would like to repeat or amend your order. “We are trying to deliver a local and personal service nationally,” says Ryma. “The customer is king, and we realise that the personal touch and being able to get hold of us by email or phone is important when using an online service.”

The next class is scheduled for Saturday 19th October, in time for Christmas, and will show techniques for making your own wreaths and swags. Class sizes will be kept small, so call or email to register. Further dates will be advertised and will feature Caite teaching some of the many skills she has learnt. More news! Together with landscaper Andrew Bunt, Ryma has formed De Novo Designs, a sister company specialising in private and corporate landscaping, office plant maintenance, flowers and living walls. Visit denovodesigns.co.uk for more information.

Looking for a stylish alternative to fresh flowers? Ask Ryma about permanent flower and plant installations – beautifully restored pieces of wood, mounted by metal designer Paul Badham and minimally decorated with silk flowers or plants. T

Open Gardens

for St Catherine’s Hospice This month, garden gates in Crawley Down and Hurstpierpoint are being thrown open for the public to come and visit, with all proceeds going to charity. St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, providing valuable end-of-life care and support to patients, families, friends and carers. I took a look at just four of the many private gardens participating in this wonderful fundraising initiative, while discovering some stunning local gems in the process. Sarah Furey is well known to readers of Sussex Living for her Herbs for Health column, so I imagined her garden in Hurstpierpoint to be an alchemist’s paradise, bursting with herbs and concoctions. This proved an accurate description: She transformed her garden three years ago from grass and bramble towards an impressive array of over 40 herbs and medicinal plants, a particular challenge on the heavy clay soil. Plants in Sarah’s garden possess healing properties: Elecampane is a lung expectorant, Wild Lettuce is good for sleep, Motherwort and Valerian are calming. Wood Betony helps migraines and Goats Rue balances blood sugar. Visitors can discover dozens of medicinal uses for the plants they see before them on Sarah’s ‘herb hunt’; kitchen herbs fill the front garden while healing plants blend into wild areas at the rear of the house. Fruit trees dating from when the house was built in the 1950s overlook swathes of useful plants, which Sarah blends and bottles in her therapy studio. Once visitors have learned how herbs can treat illness and encourage health, they can relax in Sarah’s sun room to enjoy teas and gluten-free cakes and even buy herbs for their own natural medicine chest. A short walk away, inspiration awaits in Alison Truelove’s expansive cottage garden. Now 2/3 of an acre, the original garden was half the size when the 1820s cottage was purchased 27 years ago. Alison

loves flowers of every season, keeping interest alive throughout the year. Swathes of snowdrops give way to hellebores, followed by numerous coloured poppies and old-fashioned rose varieties. Gaps are filled with delicate woodruff, with its delicious scent like mown hay, while ox-eye daisies, Lady’s Smock, primrose, wood anemones and clematis bring colour and contrast to the garden. A wild area where cowslips and buttercups grow among fritillaries is mown just once a year, and a formal cutting garden sits among neat box ball topiary. Alison’s husband Richard has built

several productive compost bays to provide free year-round nourishment for the entire garden. Tall beech hedging acts as a windbreak around and within the garden, and a group of tall silver birches lend scale and movement to the intimate planting underneath. There is even a stately sequoia in the garden’s far corner, giving a darker contrast to the shimmering birches, while plum, greengage and apple trees provide a plentiful crop of fruit. Wendy and Bruce Ogilvy’s house in Crawley Down offers spectacular raised views of their colourful garden, flanked by tall larches overlooking a wellstocked pond. The couple moved

here 28 years ago when the garden consisted of bare lawn and a few shrubs. “It’s evolved over the years. I’ve changed things so many times,” said Wendy, adding that she’s gained inspiration from different places, without having a defined plan. I could hear birdsong surrounding us from the tree canopy, and Bruce told me that green and greater spotted woodpeckers, jays and herons regularly visit the garden. Fuchsias, pink azaleas and camellias provide hot colour to this north-facing site, and there is a real sense of peace and privacy in all areas of the garden. Fruit grown under netting include raspberries, gooseberries and the delicious giant fruits of a thornless blackberry. Visitors will find plenty to fire their imagination here; Bruce and Wendy are enthusiastic hosts who have gleaned lots of knowledge from nearly three decades of nurturing their garden. Nearby, Brenda and Gerry Law bought their house 40 years ago when it was newly built and the garden was just bare earth – literally no more than a blank canvas. Wendy’s inspiration was her father, who was a keen gardener and first began work on the couple’s plot. There are no straight lines in this delightful garden; natural curved borders snake around the pond and divide the garden into three ‘rooms’. A large vegetable patch is Gerry’s domain while Brenda loves the plentiful forget-me-nots and flowering cherry that provide rich colour to the overall view. A towering eucalyptus overlooks the lawn, balancing the twisting paths and gnarled apple tree white with blossom. The garden is a haven for birds, and Brenda told me that blackbirds will come to be fed without flying away when people appear.

warmer weather here, it’s time to spring With the

into action in the

vegetable garden.

Blooming Times

Assemble a group of gardeners in a room and I guarantee that within three minutes they’ll be commiserating about the weather. Three minutes after that, a ‘Worst Weather’ competition will have reared its ugly head: “Uncle Frank was never the same after he froze his nethers to the crossbar in the winter of ‘63” and “Call that flooding? Pah! I’ll show you flooding!” as mobile phone footage is brandished, showing a rising tide of mud lapping at a greenhouse door. Bad weather is always the lazy gardener’s convenient excuse, but the exceptional climate of recent months means even the most diligent and experienced gardeners are rushing to play catch-up, after a spring that finally arrived one morning in late April. It was as if Mother Nature, tired of waiting, decided to get the whole thing over with in a day: narcissi scenting the air at breakfast time, forget-me-nots in full bloom by noon and the last of the cherry blossom falling at dusk, shrivelled by the heat of the sun. I missed the crocus this year – I was having a bath at the time. About now, it seems everything needs your immediate attention, as you run about ‘headless chicken’ style, cursing and thinking of the seeds you meant to sow but didn’t. Fear not! June days are long and the soil is warm, making the ideal requirements for germination. And seedlings can appear, literally, overnight. Like James Dean, salad crops live fast and die young, so make sowings of lettuce, radish, spring onions and beetroot. ‘Cut-and-come-again’ lettuce seed is super-speedy to germinate, producing delicious leaves at a fraction of the price of bagged supermarket salads. Small, ball-rooted carrots, such as ‘Parmex’ are quick and easy. Try planting them in a patio pot or use them to edge a border; the feathery foliage is the perfect complement to flowers. If earlier attempts with beans and peas were disappointing, make further sowings now. Provided

Cut-and-come-again lettuce seed is super-speedy to germinate and produces delicious leaves we have decent weather, you’ll be cropping well into September. Garden centres stock an increasing range of vegetable plants. As well as the old favourites such as tomatoes and courgettes, you’ll find sweet corn, peppers, aubergine and many varieties of pumpkin and squash. Looking further ahead, Brussels sprouts and purple winter broccoli plants can be purchased now. Their succulent, fleshy leaves are loved by pigeons, so it’s essential to use a barrier of netting and do keep the plants regularly watered; they do not appreciate a drought. And there you were, thinking you’d left it too late… Oh, by the way, what’s the collective noun for gardeners? An ‘enthusiasm’, of course! www.sussexliving.com

Fletching Garden Trail The Fletching Village Garden Trail will be celebrating its 21st birthday on Sunday 16th June 2013, 11am-5pm. The annual event in the picturesque East Sussex village has become an integral part of the Sussex Open Gardens Calendar. From the children’s school vegetable plot to the stunning Clinton Lodge, there is something for everyone in over 20 private gardens. Highly acclaimed local artist Lorna Holdcroft will be capturing the mood of Garden Trail with a specially commissioned picture, which will be raffled at the end of the day. There will be a wide variety of activities on offer throughout the day. Children will once again be able to hone their tracking skills on the now famous duck

trail around the gardens, and visit the friendly alpacas at Spring Farm. Experts will be on hand on the plant stall to advise on all aspects of vegetable growing, including advice on ways to combat common pests and avoid disease. The 12th-century Church of St Andrew and St Mary the Virgin will be open to visitors and a selection of local businesses will have stalls in the Village Hall. The Garden Trail was set up in 1992 as a means to raise funds for Fletching CoE Primary School. Headteacher Lorraine Kirkwood commented: “Every year, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community and do so enjoy the enormous diversity that so many gardens offer. As a direct result, our PTA are able

Burgess Hill Flower Festival The Burgess Hill Flower Club is delighted to have been asked to arrange a flower festival in the Church of St. John the Evangelist at Burgess Hill to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the church’s dedication. The Festival will be staged by club members, church members, demonstrators for the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies and various churches from the area. We are also fortunate enough to have three local florists taking part. The themes include, appropriately this year, the opening of the London Underground in 1863. Also the opening of Tower Bridge in 1894, the conquering of Everest in 1953 and a very large arrangement at the back of the church dedicated to the church, which will be done

by members of the Flower Club. Over 30 large arrangements will be complemented by 35 further arrangements, making 71 in all. The church and club will be delighted to welcome as many of you as possible to come and visit and see this beautiful church full of flowers. the Festival takes place on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th June (10.00-17.00) and on Sunday 16th June (11.30-17.00). Entrance is free but donations towards the organ restoration fund will be most welcome. Our club meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the Cyprus Road Hall, Cyprus Road, Burgess Hill at 2pm and we invite anyone interested in learning about the fun and pleasure of flower arranging to come and visit us for the demonstrations and workshops.

Last year I became involved in organising the Armed Forces Flag Raising event at Haywards Heath. I was very surprised to find there were no additional events held in Mid Sussex. With that in mind, and being an exRoyal Military Policeman and a member of Burgess Hill District Lions, thinking caps were put on. This year’s Armed Forces Day will take place on Sunday 30th June – special events and activities take place each year to raise awareness of the Armed Forces community and celebrate the outstanding contribution it makes to our country, as well as forge closer links between the Armed Forces and young people. It also gives the nation an opportunity to show its support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets. You don’t need any special skills or be an ‘expert’, and you don’t have to be observing for all 24 hours. You can observe at different times of the day, write down what you see, and take lots of photos. If you can identify some of the things you see, so much

the better, but there will be a community of people on hand to help. Post your pictures to the iSpot website (www.ispot.org.uk), and chances are that someone will tell you what it is within minutes. the All Party Parliamentary Group on ME/CFS at Westminster, as is reMEmber. Mr Burrows has given very generous support to reMEmber by allowing us to use Danny House for fundraising activities. Danny House has many historical links, the main one being in 1918, when it was rented for three months for Prime Minister David Lloyd George. At that time, Winston Churchill stayed at Danny House on several occasions. Lloyd George held regular conferences in the Great Hall, where on 13 October 1918 they agreed the preliminary terms of the Armistice to be offered to Germany at the end of the Great War, which was to become documented as the Treaty of Versailles. Janice Kent, Director of reMEmber, said: ‘This promises to be a landmark evening in the history of Danny and reMEmber. Doctor Willy Weir will also give a short address on behalf reMEmber. PRInT PaRTIeS alSO avaIlable. becOme a HOST TOday! 07825092621 On 16th June 1910, an American woman called Sonora Dodd invented Father’s Day. I think she put the apostrophe in the wrong place, but maybe she just intended it to be for her own father, in which case she must be pretty amazed by what happened to her idea. I had always believed that Father’s Day was invented by the greetings card industry, but then I’m a cynic. However it began, you may judge how significant it is nowadays by simply putting “Father’s Day Gifts” into Google. I tried this – purely in the name of research, you understand – and got nearly 3 million results. I have passed this information on to my children, lest they should be short of ideas. And there are some crackers. I already have the Star Wars Jedi bath robe, but the novelty Golf Ball Finder Glasses might come in handy in the unlikely event that I ever hit the ball far enough to lose sight of it. Actually, I hope none of my children buy wacky presents because, like most dads, I’d prefer just to have their good wishes and perhaps a book or a day’s fishing, although the latter doesn’t have good track record. Last year, I spent the day being ‘recovered’ by roadside assistance while my son fished. The previous year, he wanted me to take him to hospital because he’d suddenly become hot and feverish. I pointed out to him that his new car had a heated driver’s seat, which he had inadvertently switched on. Whatever present I end up with, it is unlikely to mean more to me than the card I received from my daughter many years ago and which is still pinned to the wall of my office. On it is a slightly deranged looking figure made out of felt and stuck to the card. He is wearing a blue felt top and white felt shorts; they complement his orange felt face and yellow, tufted wool hair. A small plastic trophy is stuck to his right arm, above which is written ‘Calcutta Cup’ to celebrate a Scotland win over England at rugby – yes, I did say it was a long time ago. Inside, a childish hand had written ‘Happy Fathers Day xx’. That’ll do me.

Having a part of your body pierced ‘for fun and fashion’ shouldn’t be a big deal. Or should it?

Lend me your ears… Long ago, when I was 15 years old, my mother agreed that I could have my ears pierced. I remember it clearly, not because it was a major event or anything, but because it defined a rite of passage into womanhood, like discovering make-up, high heels and boys. I felt grown up with my piercings (please note: one per ear), and it wasn’t until my 20s that I felt the need to add another, and then another, as I experimented with fashion and the impact of my appearance on the world around me. Body art has come a long way since my teenage years. These days, anything is possible, making my experience seem quaintly naïve, if not ludicrously out of date. As any self-respecting youngster will tell you, body piercings are just one of many available and perfectly acceptable forms of creative selfexpression, and certainly no biggie. And I agree, up to a point. A diamond nose stud can look very cute on the right face, and a navel piercing can do much to show off the toned midriff of the piercee. I can’t quite understand why anyone would want their tongue pierced, frankly, but hey – each to their own. That said, there’s a clear threshold between pleasing and off-putting, even for liberal types like me. When that line has been crossed, my aesthetic sensibilities are offended. Flesh tunnels, anyone? The term alone makes my skin crawl, and the sight of someone deliberately stretching their earlobes to create a 50p coin-sized hole is, in my humble view, bordering on body mutilation. If they’re meant to shock, it’s working. As for body piercings I don’t

know where, the current teenage vernacular has the most appropriate riposte: hell to the no! Of course, the good thing about piercings is that you can take them out when you’ve grown tired of them. Fashion is a fickle friend, and people are likely to change their views and preferences over the years. It may take a while for the hole to close up, but no lasting damage is done (bar flesh tunnels, which will be with you long-term). My extra ear piercings have long disappeared and I’m back to one in each ear, no longer feeling the need to rebel. As things come full circle, I can now take my 15-year-old daughter shopping for earrings. She currently has three piercings and is hoping for more soon… www.sussexliving.com

ack pain in its many forms can strike at any time, bringing both discomfort and misery to sufferers and seriously affecting their quality of life. With back pain the second most common cause of long-term sickness in the UK (after stress), getting a correct diagnosis, treatment and aftercare is important. By finding ways to reduce the stresses and strains on the spine during our daily activities, the risk of developing back pain can be lessened. We should always be aware of good posture, both at home and at work, to help prevent back pain becoming a serious problem.

Herbs for Health Local herbalist Sarah Furey on how to brighten and protect your

skin and hair.

Face Toner or Hair rinse 4 parts lemon balm 4 parts german chamomile flowers 4 parts rose petals 3 parts marigold flowers 1 part rosemary leaves 1 part lemon or orange peel Organic wine vinegar or vodka to cover A few drops of lavender or frankincense essential oil 1. Crush all the leaves and flowers (use fresh or dried) 2. 3. 4. 5.

and slice the citrus. Place in a preserving jar and cover with the liquid. Shake once a day for 2 weeks. Strain and add the essential oils. Store in a cool dark place.

We’ve waited a long time for the sun (and that Vitamin D) to arrive. While enjoying the sun’s healing benefits, why not think about how you can look after your skin and hair at the same time? We all know the sun can be very drying. To combat this, I always use an infused oil on my skin and a different, more oil-based hair conditioner in the summer months. Chamomile and rosemary oils both have antiinflammatory properties and are very nourishing. They work on all but the most greasy hair. Rosemary is also a lovely conditioner – it will make the hair shiny and encourage growth. I infuse the herbs in almond oil, which is kind to the scalp, but coconut oil is a good alternative. Nettles are also an excellent hair tonic. Use a couple of fresh nettle tops for each cup of boiling water, infuse for 15 minutes and use as a hair rinse to promote hair growth. Or try the tonic recipe below. I was recently given a recipe for a wonderful body scrub. It stimulates the blood supply to the skin which, in turn, promotes healing and will make your skin silky smooth. Bring on summer!

Body Scrub 50g fresh mint leaves 50g rosemary leaves 50g chamomile flowers Peel of 2 lemons 300ml olive oil 400g fine sea salt 4 tsp Vitamin C powder 1. Infuse the finely chopped herbs and lemon peel in

the olive oil at a medium heat for about 5 minutes, then allow to cool and squeeze all the oil out of the herbs, using a muslin cloth. 2. Mix the sea salt and Vitamin C powder into the oil. Put into a sterilised jar and label. 3. Apply to wet skin in the bath or shower. Scrub and rinse off well with warm water.

She was asked what she enjoyed about her home with Sussex Health Care and she replied that she loved how well the staff looked after her. They could not do enough for her and made her feel ‘happy’ and completely at home. This glowing testament shows just how well thoughtof the staff at Sussex Health Care really are and also provides families with the wonderful knowledge that their loved ones are being compassionately looked after. Walk

Littleworth Walk © www.flickr.com/people/seadipper/

A flat walk through mixed farmland and a short stretch of woodland, this route passes by the imposing monastery at Parkminster, near Cowfold.

From the Windmill pub at Littleworth, walk south towards Partridge Green to cross Mill Lane and, after about 200 yards, look for a signed path to your right, opposite Oakfield. On reaching a junction of paths by a playing field, turn right on an indistinct path which meanders through a strip of woodland before becoming enclosed alongside an allotment. On reaching Mill Lane, cross to the path opposite and go over a stile beside a pair of iron gates. Follow a narrow path beside buildings, go over a stile and follow up a lefthand field edge to a threeway path junction. Sidestep to your left and follow down a right-hand field edge. Go through a metal gate and maintain direction ahead to a three-way path junction, and go over a stile beside a metal gate. Just before the house and outbuildings of Chucks Farm, go left over a stile and turn sharp right to walk uphill alongside the property. At the top of the rise, go through a gap beside a stile and turn sharp right along a right-hand field edge, then left at the next field corner to go

over a stile and on to a road. This will be your first view of the majestic buildings of St Hugh’s Charterhouse (Cowfold Monastery). Turn left along the road for about 50 yards, then right through a blue gate on a signed path. Walk downhill beside a post and rail fence and go through a gate at the bottom of the field. Cross the next field, aiming for a stile a little to the right of a pair of oak trees. Go over the stile and maintain direction along a fence line which divides two large fields. Ignore a four-way path junction to shortly go right up a slope and walk in front of Mockford, currently under renovation. On joining a gravel track, turn right with the Monastery now immediately in front. St Hugh’s Charterhouse at Parkminster was founded in 1873 and the buildings are in a French Gothic Revival style. It is the only postReformation Carthusian monastery in the country and occupies a 240-acre site. The unusually tall spire, which can be seen from the South Downs, is 203 feet (62 metres) tall! Keep right at the next path junction, where the track swings left alongside a large barn to curve round a pond out to a gravel track. Follow this track out to the A281. continued on next page S u ss e x L i v i n g June 2013

On reaching the A281, turn right for about 300 yards, then right on a bridleway signed to Greentree Farm. Follow this surfaced track to the farm, then take the left of two tracks and follow this wide track through Waymarks Wood, ignoring all turnings off to the left and right. Go through a gate and follow a path slightly uphill to join a drive close to a house. Cross to the signpost opposite and curve right around a post and rail fence to a gate. Go left, ignore a crossing path and follow this track (Reeds Lane) out to the road. Turn right for your car and a well-earned pint!

Life is precious at St Peter & St James Hospice

The hospice movement seeks to allow people with terminal illnesses to live their lives as positively as they can for as long as they can. But for me, the word ‘hospice’ used to conjure up images of silent corridors and whispered conversations, subdued lighting and solemn faces. That was before my introduction to St Peter & St James Hospice & Continuing Care Centre last year, when all my preconceived ideas about hospices went out of the window. On this, my second visit, I was at least prepared for the cheerful, friendly ‘buzz’ of the place when I arrived to interview Chief Executive Colin Burgess. His enthusiasm for the work of the hospice is so infectious that it would not be possible to be anything other than

52

SuSSex Living June 2013

optimistic in his company, and it has communicated itself to everybody who works there, from the newest volunteer to the most senior clinician. On one of the first beautiful, sunlit days of spring, St Peter & St James, set in acres of woods and gardens, was a bright and energetic place to be. And if that sounds superficial, here is Colin’s thought on the work of the hospice: “We never lose sight of our primary purpose – to provide specialist care, love and support for those living with life-limiting illnesses or approaching the end of their lives.” I think the really extraordinary thing about this statement is that it contains the word ‘love’ – not a sentiment you’d find expressed by many health professionals in these days of targets and tight budgets.

Above: Just some of the St Peter & St James team. Below: Colin Burgess, Chief Executive.

Yet budgets loom large in the everyday life of the hospice. Although all care is free at the point of delivery, currently St Peter & St James costs around £2.2 million a year to run, but only 16% of that is funded by the Government. The remainder has to come from voluntary contributions, legacies and charitable giving, much of which is raised by individuals, businesses and organisations from the local area. Just think of having to find £6,000 a day, every day. Gill Cronin is Head of Fundraising, and although she is very experienced and hugely competent, I suspect it keeps her awake at night. It would me. What does it pay for? Some simple statistics might help us understand the scale of the invaluable contribution that the hospice makes to our community. Over the course of a year, some 560 people and their families received the incredible care and support of the hospice team. The great majority www.sussexliving.com

of these patients were cared for in their own homes, with over 200 being looked after at any one time. They were in addition to the patients cared for in the eight in-house beds and one respite bed throughout the period. In 2011/12, the community team of seven Clinical Nurse Specialists who provide the home support travelled around 21,000 miles and dealt with over 13,000 phone calls. They made over 3,000 home visits. There are other interesting numbers which reveal the extent of our involvement in the life and funding of St Peter & St James, such as the 1,100 marathon miles run by people raising money and nearly 7,000 volunteer sessions in the hospice, which amongst many other tasks included serving 19,600 cups of tea! This is clearly a complex, vibrant and ambitious organisation with some exciting plans for the near future. The Day Hospice is used to offer patients who are cared for at home the opportunity to come in for activities, including complementary therapies, group physiotherapy, socialising, art therapy or simply the chance to get out of the home and relax with other patients in a friendly environment. For many patients, this is an invaluable resource, and yet the limitations of space mean that not enough patients are able to benefit from the facility. And as it is a single communal space, it doesn’t much appeal to the younger adult patients. Equally, only a limited amount of clinical and social activity can take place side by side. For these reasons and because the existing facility has now become dated in comparison to the new state-of-the-art inpatient centre, plans are well advanced to replace the Day Hospice with a brand spanking new Community Patient Support Centre. “We aim to create a modern, integrated centre that increases our patients’ sense of wellbeing and adds life to their days,” says Colin. “I want more of our patients, and particularly the younger adults, to get added value from their time with us.” At the heart of the new Community Patient Support Centre is going to be a social hub and café for the enjoyment of patients, family members, carers, staff, volunteers and visitors. It will be a lively, informal meeting

We aim to create a modern, integrated centre that increases our patients’ sense of wellbeing and adds life to their days place and will set the tone of friendliness and mutual support, which is so central to the hospice philosophy. The adjacent large social room will be re-modelled to offer different usage ‘zones’, such as an internet café style area, and there will be facilities for video creation and editing to help users make ‘memory boxes’ for family and friends. There will be an arts & crafts area, a physiotherapy area with exercise equipment and a Nintendo Wii console as well as a comfortable seating section for simply relaxing. A new extension will accommodate new rooms of different shapes and sizes for patient and family use, and the Clinical Nurse Specialists will have a space in a setting where they are more easily accessible to patients and central to everything that’s going on. A great deal of careful, creative thought has gone into the planning of the new Patient

Support Centre, which Colin assured me will open next year. It is going to cost £460,000 but, to the team’s great delight, official Government approval for the project came with a grant of £360,000 from the Department of Health, so planning for the work has started straight away – even if that leaves the Hospice to find another £100,000! If you would like to help them in this endeavour, or would like to volunteer or help in any other way with the vital work of St Peter & St James, simply visit the website where you’ll find everything you need to know.

Sussex Army Tottington Manor is a delightful hotel

and restaurant nestled at the foot of the South Downs near Henfield – but were you aware of its wartime secret?

Once upon a time, this charming hostelry was the headquarters of a secret Sussex army of ‘saboteurs’, whose job it would have been to attack the Germans if they had succeeded in invading this country. Few, if any, of today’s hotel guests are aware that, as they enjoy their meal in the pretty dining room, deep below their feet lies an underground bunker complex designed to accommodate the men who ran our own Sussex ‘resistance movement’. They were responsible for a county-wide network of trained resistance fighters formed into discrete sub-units called patrols, each with its own secret hideout and resources. Originally, in 1940 when a German invasion seemed all too likely, this secret force was raised from members of the Home Guard and, to disguise it, it was given the deliberately misleading title of ‘Auxiliary Units’. Initially, training in the dark arts of sabotage, the use and handling of high explosives, ambush techniques, night movement, unarmed combat and much more was given at Coleshill House in Wiltshire, where group members were sent on weekend courses. Further training by regular army instructors took place locally and the patrols carried out many dummy night attacks on key buildings, petrol dumps and army camps around the county.

When I began to discover something of their history, I was puzzled as to why this high risk, extremely difficult role should have been given to the ‘part timers’ of the Home Guard, rather than more battle-hardened veterans of the British army. The reason was simple: The patrol members had to have an intimate familiarity with their area, so they could operate effectively at night and remain undetected for as long as possible – hence the decision to recruit and train local men. The ideal candidates would have been people who lived and worked in the countryside – farmers, gamekeepers and the like. The men were all volunteers; they were required to sign the Official Secrets Act, which is why, like the code breakers who worked at Bletchley Park, very little was known about their activities until many years after the war was over. Although Tottington was the regional headquarters, there were 20 or so patrols in Sussex, distributed throughout the county from Arundel in the west to Herstmonceux in the east. Hurstpierpoint, Idem, Hellingly, Ditchling and many other small villages each had their auxiliary units, all composed of these ordinary local men who were prepared to face real hardship and terrible danger

should they ever be called into action. Everybody was aware that their chances of survival were very poor; indeed one estimate from the ‘higher ups’ gave them only weeks before being killed in action, or discovered and put to death by firing squad. Most patrols comprised six to eight men and had a dedicated, specially constructed hideout called the Operational Base (OB), which was skilfully concealed below ground and typically could store their food, water, ammunition and explosives. Foldaway bunk beds and a chemical toilet completed these necessarily cramped and Spartan conditions. Living in the hideout for any length of time would have been an immensely stressful and claustrophobic experience, especially since the men would have been actively and energetically hunted by the forces of occupation. Luckily, a thoughtful War Office provided patrol leaders with useful rules for maintaining efficiency, discipline and morale under these enormously trying conditions. They included a suggested daily programme which, as their deadly work would of necessity be carried out at night, commenced with ‘reveille’ at 2.30 in the afternoon and ‘lights out’ at 7.30 in the morning. There were other useful tips like ‘beware of pessimism and despondency’ – I’ll say! And ‘smoking MUST be controlled. 10-15 minutes in each hour must be sufficient’. Can you imagine the atmosphere after six chaps had been smoking in an underground hideout for 15 minutes… One of the army personnel who was intimately involved with the Sussex Auxiliary Units continued on next page

Caring Companions (UK) Ltd can provide that alternative by placing live-in Companions/Carers with our clients, thus enabling people to live in the comfort and security of their own homes with all their beloved memories and treasured items surrounding them. throughout the war was Sergeant Frank Mayston of the Royal Engineers. Francis George Mayston, as his family knew him, was a well-known local man, born and brought up in Ditchling and therefore well acquainted with the Mid Sussex countryside. He was one of the very few people who knew the exact whereabouts of all the Sussex patrol OBs because he had overseen the construction of most of them. Many years later, he became President of Henfield Cricket Club but according to his niece, Susie Harrison, and despite the fact that Frank personally constructed many of the patrol hideouts, that he was a central figure at the Tottington headquarters and played a significant role in the training of the units, he, like the men under his command, never spoke about this secret war.

Sergeant Francis George Mayston, Royal Engineers.

Unlike other, occupied nations, we had the advantage of setting up an effective resistance organisation before an invasion It was the mid 1990s before the extended Mayston family discovered anything about his aspect of his history. Frank recruited the Ditchling Patrol and, according to George Thomas, a local farmer who became the patrol leader, Frank gave him his initial training in his living room. How successful would they have been? It is well known that small, but highly trained and determined groups of men can cause disruption and damage quite out of proportion to their numbers. And there’s no doubt that with 20+ patrols in Sussex alone, the auxiliary units would certainly have made their presence felt. In their role as observers, they might even have been able to provide valuable intelligence information on the enemy’s movements, but the Weald of Sussex is gently wooded farmland and that makes ongoing concealment very difficult. There are no deep forests in which to hide and the South Downs aren’t exactly the gruelling mountainous terrain which hinders the movement of searching troops. Brutal retaliatory measures would certainly have been taken against the civilian population and these, of course, would have increased the intolerable psychological pressure on the men of the Auxiliary Units, whose activities would have been the cause. However, unlike other, occupied nations, we at least had the advantage of setting up an effective resistance organisation before any invasion could take place, so perhaps the network might have proved itself to be more robust than the original planners anticipated. Certainly, there was no lack of commitment from the volunteers. The Auxiliary Units were disbanded in November 1944 as discreetly as they had been raised. The regular army staff rejoined their regiments, stores were returned and the men resumed their ordinary, everyday lives. They each received a ‘thank you’ letter; were reminded of the need for secrecy and what was to become one of the best kept secrets of the war was over.

David Hampson is the proud new owner of the New Inn, Hurstpierpoint’s beautiful 600-year-old village pub. Having lived in Hurstpierpoint nearly all his life, David is looking forward to making a real contribution to the vibrant social life of the village. “I am excited to have the chance to work with the great team here at the New Inn,” he says. “Hurst is a big, lively village with a bustling high street. The New Inn is right at the heart of the village, and we will do everything we can make that heart beat loudly – for everyone!” With a wealth of experience in hospitality and catering provided by the management team, including Melanie Dobson (Manager) and Peter Hampson (Assistant Manager), the New Inn couldn’t be in better hands. So what are David’s plans for his new pub? “The inside of the pub is beautiful and steeped in history – I don’t want to change that. We’ll be making sure each of the bar/dining areas has a distinct look and feel, giving our customers a real choice on how they wish to socialise. We’ll also be adding a family area.” In the kitchen, both the menu and opening times will be extended, providing greater flexibility and choice. “Do look out for Weekend Brunches, which should go down a storm with all customers,” says David. With summer just around the corner, the New Inn’s pretty garden is well worth discovering. “It’s a wonderful place to relax,” says David. “We’re planning more outside catering and events to really make the most of this wonderful facility. The large walled garden is totally enclosed and

safe for children, and we’ll be putting in a children’s play area to make it even more family friendly.” The New Inn is well known for its large and varied events programme, something David is very keen to build on. Check the website for regular Quiz Nights, Comedy Nights and Music Nights and look out for new events too. “I’m looking at BBQs, open air music, plays and even some opera,” smiles David. With a clear idea of what today’s customers are looking for in a village pub, David takes his new role very seriously. “The New Inn has been around a long time before me and will be here a long time after. It’s changed and evolved over the centuries and we will make sure it continues to move with the times, so that future generations can enjoy it too.” Isn’t it time you discovered this jewel on Hurstpierpoint’s high street?

There are many local amateur dramatic societies in Mid Sussex, but only a few who are lucky enough to

own a theatre.

The Players Theatre on Hurstpierpoint’s pretty high street is home to the Hurstpierpoint Players. I met with two very active and long-standing members of the theatre group, Chairman Richard Coney (pictured above) and veteran Player Alan Needham, to learn more about their fascinating journey. The Hurstpierpoint Players were originally formed in 1937. Initially, they had no home, but performed in whatever venues were available. During the summer months, they used to set up marquees in local gardens for their performances, including Shakespeare’s As You Like It in 1964 and Love’s Labour’s Lost in 1966. In 1976, the Players were able to purchase their own premises on the high street. The building dates back to the 1820s and, through the years, had variously been a non-conformist Chapel, a school and, latterly, Graveley’s General Stores. The Players and their friends quickly embarked on pulling together to create a theatre in which they were able to put on their first performance in early 1977: Bird in Hand, a comedy by John Drinkwater. Importantly, it is this ethos that has enabled and sustained the Players Theatre’s existence. All the members of Hurst Players play a full part in the community of the Theatre – not just in character on stage, SuSSex Living June 2013

but in the endless work, upkeep and maintenance that goes on behind the scenes. One of the Players, carpenter Mike Amiet, was busy working on the set of this year’s April performance (The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild by Paul Zindel) during my visit, and smiled poignantly: “The only thing that’s amateur about us is that we don’t get paid.” And if anyone should doubt their commitment to their craft and the local community, Alan put my mind at rest with a lively retelling of what happened in 1987. In the Great Gale of October 1987, the Players Theatre lost half of its roof. It was a Friday and the Hurst Players were due to perform the following Monday – the show must go on, as the saying goes. So, the whole group pulled together, secured tarpaulin and carried on. Although water leaked through the ceiling, the Theatre did have power and, as they were one of the only places in the village that did, they had a full house every night! John Chapman and Anthony Marriott’s hilarious comedy Shut Your Eyes and Think of England went down a storm (!) and the whole community had great fun. Since 1937, the Hurst Players have put on more that 250 performances, which means at least three shows a year: typically, there’s a spring, summer and www.sussexliving.com

behind the scenes.

autumn performance, and then a Pantomime over Christmas and New Year. Sales of tickets go a long way to help with the costs but, so often, it’s not quite enough to keep going. The Hurstpierpoint Players are a registered charity, and fundraising and donations are essential to raise the necessary sums required to maintain the period building and the high quality of shows into the future. The Players Theatre seats 85 people and has all the technology, audio, lighting, costumes and whatever else is needed to put on professional performances. As a community hub, the Theatre can also be hired for corporate events. Touring companies regularly use the Theatre, as do local community groups such as the Hurstpierpoint Film Society and the youth theatre group Centre Stage. The Players Theatre is a valuable local resource for the whole community, and the early Victorian building is a well-known landmark on the village

high street which deserves to be supported, now and in the future. What’s more, it’s easy to get in on the act. Whether you fancy joining the Hurstpierpoint Players as an actor or off-stage helper, or perhaps you just enjoy seeing great theatre on a high street near you, everyone is welcome.

HHDBA – it’s all about growth! So said Maureen Scholefield, Chair of the Haywards Heath & District Business Association: “It’s all about growth – for HHDBA, for our members and for the community of Haywards Heath.”

Driving Growth With membership racing past 141, members say the key to its success is that it truly offers variety – from networking business events to business skills-building activities. The ‘Planning for Profit’ workshops, designed to help members with their business planning, have been a big hit, while the breakfast seminars on key business techniques proved very popular. The Action Learning Group has been equally successful, having already helped many members through the sticky minefield of business problems.

74

S u ss e x L i v i n g June 2013

HHDBA is also a lead player in the Haywards Heath Town Team, which has the ambition of providing one job for each home in the area and is working hard to attract inward investment and help our home-grown companies succeed. The HHDBA intern programme, introduced last autumn, has been so successful that all four interns now have full-time jobs and two new interns have been appointed: Emily Miller is on her placement with Cullen Scholefield, while Joe Coltherd is working at St Peter & St James Hospice. Work experience is gained with HHDBA itself, helping to promote the organisation, as well as gaining experience with member companies, while work-readiness training is provided by people consultancy Cullen Scholefield and HR specialist Assessment4Potential. The committee now has several newcomers, including Neil Tomlinson of AquaPax, John Berry of Timeless Time, Karim Mohammed of Mayo Wynne Baxter, Peter Cogle of Suffuse Solutions and Hannah Simcoe-Read of NVH Technology – and they’re all raring to go to drive that growth! www.sussexliving.com

Growing a Social Side HHDBA set up the inter-business association quiz across Mid Sussex and is looking forward to the next round, hosted by the East Grinstead Business Association on 4th June. Also under careful wraps is an event in early July, aimed at members and their families. Rumours say it will be a hybrid between a traditional school sports day and ‘It’s a Knock Out’ – so watch this space! Already an established success, the third Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride this April saw more than 900 riders setting off, with numbers swelled by family, friends and well-wishers. Cyclists were sent on their way by UK discus champ Jade Lally, accompanied by the Haywards Heath Town Band. The teams from Haywards Heath’s ‘twins’, Bondues in France and Traunstein in Germany, joined in the event too, welcomed by bunting along The Broadway and national anthems from the Band. To welcome the riders home, Vivace Choir gave a magnificent performance. With nearly £16,500 raised, the event looks set to reach its target for buying defibrillators for the area – another truly fantastic community day!

Dear business community, I am a local trader in Hurstpierpoint, helping small businesses expand and become more profitable with strategic marketing services, web development and design. About 5 years ago, my wife Andrea was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis), which affects her ability to walk any kind of distance, and it has got a little bit worse over the years. About 6 years ago, I got the bug to do different events and work with different charities, including the MS Society and the British Heart Foundation, with cycle and abseiling events. On 8th June, I will be skydiving (for the first time ever!) from Headcorn airfield near Maidstone in Kent from 10,000ft with a tandem jump. I’ve already raised £325 for the MS Society and am looking for more donations through my website. Photos of the jump will be posted on my website in July. If you are a business and you are donating, you will get a free business link on my site for the rest of the year. Thank you so much! Sonny Cutting www.y365.co.uk/company/charitywork

Summer is here. I think. In terms of motoring, a bit of sunshine can go a long way to making us feel we’re King of the Road. Out come the sunglasses, down goes the soft top, with the Beach Boys’ Good Vibrations pumping that holiday vibe. Reality is a suspended for blissful moments of self-delusion. Actually, self-delusion helps enormously in getting psyched up for The Big Road Trip. This is something I know only too well. I blame my parents’ refusal to embrace package holidays when I was a kid, and instead inflict all manner of absurd perambulations around the nation – usually with a caravan and mostly before the motorway network had extended to its present coverage. Suffice to say that many of my childhood holiday memories consist of mindnumbingly boring, never-ending road trips. You would think I’d learnt from the experience. Unfortunately, I belong to that demographic who migrated from all points north of the Watford Gap, meaning return trips for hatches, matches and dispatches become a periodic necessity. So, last Bank Holiday, I set off once more, with kids in tow, another push northwards to see the folks. A relaxing drive it could have been. Getting stressed on the M25 on a choc-a-bloc Friday afternoon, I was jolted out of my delusions. Had I not vowed never to be so careless again, and avoid ‘the world’s largest car park’ at all cost? And surely, surely, technology could be deployed to eliminate the hour of unnecessary grief queuing at the tollbooths to cross the Thames. Could Automatic Number Plate Recognition not be used to keep traffic free flowing, instead of paying cash to a man who breathes fumes for a living?! On we drove, counting yellow cars, then Minis, then Punch Buggies (that’s VW Beetles, for those over 25), to keep up the kids’ spirits and my sanity. Time, speed and distance merged and blurred dreamlike as we trekked further north, punctuated only by the occasional “are we nearly there yet?” from the youngsters. I momentarily hallucinated about an ice-chilled lager greeting my arrival, forgetting that after 30 years in the South, I was now back in Tetley country, where real men drink proper beer: Bitter. Now that’s worth driving 300 miles in a day for! www.sussexliving.com

The

last word

May has been a busy month, both in and out of the office. We were delighted to be sponsoring the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend again – and didn’t the weather make a huge difference! From the feedback we’ve received from Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and East Grinstead, a great time was had by all. We’re extremely proud that our very own Steve Ramsey completed the 10-mile Haywards Heath race in 1 hour 29 minutes – well done! Just a shame we missed him on the finishing line; either he sped past us too fast for the eye to see or we were distracted by Colin Buxton selling Union Jack tea towels! Also in May’s calendar was Burgess Hill Means Business – a brilliant local networking event, which was again well attended, with 60 businesses taking part. Make sure you don’t miss the next one. The Sussex Living Online newsletter is gaining momentum. This month, we’re featuring exclusive offers from some of our advertisers which are only available to readers of our newletter. If you haven’t signed up already, do please take advantage. Just go to www.sussexliving.com and click on the Newsletter button. Like the magazine, it’s free too! Finally, we’re curious to hear how you got on with our local dialect quiz. For answers to last month, and some new questions, see below.

TANIS BANHAM & Carla Faulks Co-Directors. Sussex Living Ltd

Sussex Dialect Quiz: Can you guess the correct meaning of these interesting words? 1 tantaddlings a) small jam tarts b) downy particles which accumulate under furniture from the negligence of housemaids c) freckles 2 paddle a) to walk around indoors with muddy shoes b) a turnstile c) to flick a marble with finger and thumb 3 stranger a) a single ear of corn b) any customer that fails to leave a tip c) a single tea-leaf floating in a cup of tea

Dear Sussex Living… … We enjoy your magazine, and particularly the recent walks, e.g. Scaynes Hill and the Balcombe railway viaduct. However, could you provide details in future from the perspective of using the train, rather than proposing we should drive a car to go for a walk! In Switzerland, where I lived for five years, walkers and hikers invariably use public transport or cycle. Wouldn’t it be a good thing to encourage this behaviour in Sussex too? Meanwhile, thank you again for your excellent publication and the contribution you are making to the quality of life in Sussex. David Butter, Horsham We do, where possible, include public transport links to get to the start point of our walks, as we are fully aware that not everyone has access to a car. However, the beauty of many of our local walks lies in the fact that they are often remote – giving the walker the opportunity to explore areas previously unknown – and thus not served well by public transport, meaning driving there is the only feasible way. (Ed)

… Seeing the picture of Mr Marc Patterson in Sussex Living magazine reminds me of 22 years ago when I first met a very young looking Mr Patterson. He performed operations on both my hips. Since then (touching wood!) I have been able to live a normal, happy life. I am now 90 years old and, on the whole, a little worse for wear, but the hips are, I think, still OK. Thank you, Mr Patterson, and thank you, Sussex Living, for the magazine. Renée Hill, Burgess Hill

From Adam Jacot de Boinod’s book: The Meaning of Tingo Answers to last month’s questions: 1 goitering = b) loud feminine laughter 2 spannel = c) to make dirty foot marks on a clean floor 3 scrumping = c) stealing fruit from trees
