Editor’s comment A warm and sunny welcome to the June issue of Sussex Living magazine. This month, we are paying tribute to a true star. Brenda Bennett (1914-2014) was a principal D’Oyly Carte soprano in the 1930s, enchanting light opera audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with her charming performances. Roger Linn would have loved to meet her in person at her home near East Grinstead. Instead, the family allowed us access to their archives containing a wealth of personal mementoes, to give us a glimpse into Brenda’s remarkable life. Turn to pp. 55-58 for the full life story. Girlguiding’s Brownies (for 7-10 yearold girls) are celebrating their 100-year Big Brownie Birthday this year, and they are more popular than ever before. We sent Hanna Lindon to find out how it all started (pp. 7-12). In the Home & Garden, we turn our attention to bathrooms. See pages 15-21 for some great ideas on how to create an oasis of calm and relaxation and a sanctuary for the senses. This June, all eyes are on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Sussex Living magazine’s contribution to honouring the sacrifices made by ordinary people during World War II is
to remember the life of one local man: Eric Plank was an RAF flight engineer who spent most of his peacetime years in Hurstpierpoint. His family were unaware of his wartime duties until they discovered an atticful of memorabilia – and history came tumbling out. Ruth Lawrence went to take a look (pp. 68-70). With summer on the doorstep, the charity open garden season is now in full swing. We went to preview some of the wonderful private gardens in Mid Sussex (pp. 37-42) and there are many more to be found in our Diary Dates section. Why not set aside an afternoon to be inspired by a fabulous local garden while supporting a worthy cause? Finally, don’t forget to spoil the men in your life on Father’s Day, Sunday 15th June, and acknowledge the wonders of our planet on 21st June, the Summer Solstice.

Brownies, the girlguiding section
for girls aged 7-10, are celebrating 100 years since their formation.
This month, Brownies from Sussex Central County will converge on the Amex Stadium in Falmer for a special event in their history. The Brownies turn 100 this year, and this anniversary is the cue for a big celebration. “To commemorate this very special occasion, we are celebrating The Big Brownie Birthday,” explains Diann Johnson, Haywards Heath Division Commissioner. “Various events will be taking place across the country and in local groups – and Sussex Central is holding an event at the Amex Stadium. Over 900 Brownies and nearly 200 Leaders as well as many adult volunteers will be taking part, with a variety of activities ranging from crafts to physical challenges, including a sleepover at the stadium. It is an exciting adventure for the girls and Leaders.” The original Girl Guides Association was formed in 1910, shortly after a Boy Scout Rally at Crystal Palace was gatecrashed by a group of girls demanding their own youth organisation. Their wish was granted by Agnes Baden-Powell, sister of the Scout Association founder Robert Baden-Powell, and by 1914 Guiding had grown continued on next page SuSSex Living June 2014

so popular that hundreds of younger girls were clamouring to take part. The ‘Rosebuds’ were formed as a result, however the name was not popular and after asking for suggestions, the name Brownies was chosen in 1915. The fi rst Rosebuds made a ‘Promise’ to do their duty to God and the King and to do a ‘Good Turn’ for someone every day. They had no official programme, but typical activities involved learning how to tie knots and collecting clothing and supporting the First World War effort, while the older Girl Guides were acting as messengers of confidential information for the Marconi Wireless Telegraph. By the end of the war, new Brownies were able to work towards a number of tests and badges. An older Brownie would be expected to be knowledgeable across a broad range of platforms – she should be able to clean cutlery and boots, make doll’s clothes and knit a pair of socks, apply a triangular bandage and make a milk pudding. While these tasks evolved with the times, some things have remained unchanged. “Brownies were and still are organised into Sixes, with each Six having their own name: Sprite, Imp, Pixie etc,” says Diann. “Each Six is led by the Sixer, who is helped by her second. “Special songs and rhymes were also sung to begin and end each meeting. This tradition continues, with ‘Brownie Bells’ being the favourite to end the night’s meeting.” The Girl Guides have always been organised into regional areas. Sussex was all one Guiding county until continued on next page

1965, when it divided into Sussex East and Sussex West. But it wasn’t until 1979 that Sussex Central – covering Hurstpierpoint, Hassocks, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Horsham, Henfield, Crawley, Worth, East Grinstead and the surrounding villages – came into being. Now, the area has nearly 3,500 girls and 1,000 adult volunteers. “We have 1,739 Brownies, with many more on waiting lists,” explains Deborah Phillips, Sussex Central County Commissioner. “Brownies are aged between seven and ten, and we also have Rainbows (aged five to seven), Guides (aged 10-14) and the Senior Section for girls and young women aged 14-25, many of whom are Young Leaders helping at units or working towards their Leader qualifications.
Sussex Central now has nearly 3,500 girls and 1,000 adult volunteers. There are 1,739 Brownies, with more girls on waiting list. “Guiding is a wonderful opportunity for girls – they can learn new skills, try new activities, challenge themselves and make a difference to their community and at the same time have fun. All this is made possible by the dedicated adult volunteers we are lucky to have in our county.” Today, Brownies enjoy everything from sleepovers and adventure activities to camping, continued on next page

day trips and new hobbies. They can also work towards a number of badges, including badges in computing and the environment and disability awareness. To celebrate The Big Brownie Birthday this year, everyone in Guiding from Rainbows through to Trefoil can work on The Big Brownie Birthday Challenge badge, which celebrates key milestones from the Brownies’ 100-year history. “It’s a chance for everyone to challenge themselves and try new activities,” says Deborah. While the uniforms, the Promise and the badges may have changed, Girlguiding today still gives girls a space where they can be themselves, have fun, build friendships and make a positive difference both to their own lives and to others. As local Brownie Izzy said after attending a recent Big Brownie Birthday event, “it doesn’t get better than that!”

What could be more soothing after a busy day than to unwind in warm, luxurious, sensuous surroundings? Let your bathroom be your sanctuary.
&
Soap
The first records of bathing date back more than 3,000 years. Whether your aim is to purify body and soul, or simply relax and rejuvenate, the cleansing and reviving power of water has helped to make the bathroom one of the most important rooms in the house. If your bathroom is not quite up to the job of reviving your body and mind, you might think about improving or renewing it, so you and your family can reap the benefits for years to come.
Glory Is your bathroom up to the job of
reviving your
body and mind?
Think Bubbles
Everything starts with a plan and there are always some pertinent questions that need addressing: How will the bathroom be used? Are you looking to update the family bathroom or perhaps creating an ensuite? Is there anything you wish to keep in your current bathroom? Do you want both a shower and a bath? Does a wet room appeal to you? Does your current heating system provide enough hot water and is there enough pressure? Last but by no means least, what is your budget for the makeover? It’s important to remember that when designing a layout, there may be practical constraints in terms of where pipes and drains are located. Draw a plan to the scale of the room to help you on how to arrange sanitaryware and furniture. Good bathroom showrooms will help you with the layout design, so you can visualise how the finished room will look.
Suite Temptation
From slipper baths with claw feet to angular clean lines, bathroom suites now offer an incredible choice of styles and designs. And while it all comes down to personal choice in the end, don’t forget to take the age and style of your house into account. Would you prefer your Victorian semi to have a bathroom in keeping with the period? Or create a striking contrast by going for that über-contemporary look? It’s up to you. Simple, clean lines are good for avoiding dust traps, and if your bathroom is on the small side, wall-hung sanitaryware will give the illusion of more space because you’ll see more of the floor. continued on next page SuSSex Living June 2014

For those looking for eco-friendly products, digitally controlled showers can be set not to go above a certain temperature and to stop after a certain amount of time, saving you water. New bath designs also feature water saving features, such as internal shelves to cut the amount of water needed to fill the bath and variable heights for the overflow, so you use less water. Make sure you do your research – go and visit some local bathroom showrooms for inspirations and talk your options through with professional bathroom designers.
Call the Professionals
With bathroom makeovers, you really do need professional advice. Bathroom designers will have seen every type of bathroom on the planet, and it’s their job to provide advice on anything from aerated shower heads to light zones – so make sure you use them to help you design to your individual requirements. Then there’s the plumber, tiler, electrician… without whose expertise your dream bathroom plans may not come together as intended. Bathroom showrooms, plumbers merchants, local advertising and word of mouth are all great sources for recommendations.

colour, use spotlights, position mirrors to reflect the light and give the appearance of spaciousness…. and there are many more tricks of the trade that any interior designer will know only too well. Look for sleek, modern and compact fittings, where pipes can be hidden away. Perhaps consider corner sinks and toilets – now included in many bathroom ranges. If there is not enough room for both a shower and a bath, how about a shower over the bath? If you do have space for a shower enclosure, there are now many options in terms of corner units, bi-fold or sliding doors that won’t obstruct the rest of the room. Your bathroom designer is likely to have many more ideas on how to maximise the available space.

Fitted bathroom furniture can be a style statement and offer fantastic storage space, all at the same time. Check out bathtubs with side/end panel storage and, when it comes to bijoux bathrooms, think ‘multifunctional’ for everything: heated towel rails that double up as radiators, stools with underseat storage… you get the general idea. If your new bathroom is generously proportioned, you can go all out for space. Freestanding cupboards for towels can look stylish and open shelving can be an attractive feature to house toiletries or linens. You may even have the space for an armchair, dressing table or large mirror, so the room becomes somewhere you will love to really relax in.

– vinyl, lino, rubber, bamboo to mention just a few. Our advice is to go see an expert flooring supplier and literally let them walk you through all the possibilities.
Switch it on!
Do you want your bathroom to feel cosy and intimate or clean and bright? Whatever your preference, it will influence the type of lighting you choose. Variable mood lighting is available so you can adjust the brightness according to your levels of serenity. In terms of heating, a heated towel rail may be all your bathroom needs, but if you’re changing the flooring you might find that underfloor heating is just the thing to add cosy warmth underfoot. If you haven’t updated your bathroom for a while, you’ll find that technology has come a long way, creeping into every aspect of our lives, including bathrooms! Just think, you can even get bluetooth mirrors, with demisting and lighting features, enabling you to relax with your favourite music or radio station while soaking away your troubles... Once your new bathroom is ready installed for use, all that remains is those little finishing touches to personalise the space and make it your own. Add a pop of colour with new towels and bath mats, and perhaps splash out on some stylish accessories to make your new bathroom all it could possibly be.
You may have space for an armchair, dressing table or large mirror, so the bathroom becomes somewhere you will love to relax in.

Dreaming of a new
bathroom?
HPS Heating Plumbing Supplies have been making a splash in Haywards Heath since July 2006. This year, they’re celebrating their 8th birthday with a BBQ lunch to thank all their loyal customers. The South’s leading Independent Merchant HPS offer a wide range of bathroom products to suit all budgets and lifestyles. But it’s their reputation for outstanding customer service, and their enthusiastic and experienced staff that sets the company apart from the competition. Choosing a new bathroom can be an exciting time for any homeowner but it does involve careful planning and a large number of decisions. This is where Lauren, bathroom designer at HPS (pictured above), comes in. With her extensive design experience and product knowledge, she is a valuable ally. “There are so many options out there,’ she says, “so it can be very useful to have one of our staff help navigate through what’s available, so you get to choose the right products and design for your individual needs.” The showroom gives customers the opportunity to explore different styles of bathroom design – from traditional to contemporary. During this process, Lauren offers guidance and advice, along with relevant brochures to take away. An appointment is then set up to refine the proposed design from which HPS can produce a computer aided design (CAD) drawing, using the measurements of your bathroom as well as the products you’ve chosen. “The main point of the CAD system is to help our customers visualise what the new bathroom design will actually look like,” Lauren explains. Unlike many bathroom retailers, HPS is an independent merchant and can access a large number of suppliers, ensuring that customers can get the exact products and look they want to achieve.
The company also works closely with a small number of trusted and respected plumbers they are happy to recommend. In terms of trends, square, clean lines remain popular, as does fitted furniture, which can be used for storage and also act as a style feature. “We sell a lot of Montrose fitted furniture,” says Lauren. “It offers a fabulous range, quality and value and as it’s manufactured in Essex, we can get the products easily.” New technology and eco-friendly products are also making their way into our bathrooms and I am seriously excited by the possibilities. There are digital showers that enable you to get the water running before you step into the shower, set the temperature, the flow and even the length of shower time – all features which make showering more water efficient and safer. Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man, has signed one of his T-shirts and donated it to reMEmber, the Hurstpierpoint/Hassocks based charity for people who suffer from ME and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Bill Kent, Secretary of reMEmber, is shown here wearing the shirt.

editorial@sussexliving.com Bill says: “We are tremendously grateful to Usain. We will auction his shirt later this year to help local children who have ME. You can also help this good cause by joining me in a sponsored walk from Clayton Windmills to Ditchling Beacon and back on Sunday 29 June (start 10.30 am).” reMEmber has another big event at the Sheldrake Suite, Martlets Hall, Burgess Hill on Friday 13th June, 2pm. Professor Stephen Holgate (Chairman, CFS/ME Research Collaborative) will discuss the Human Genome Project and Personalised Medicine. This is about the exciting future for medicine in which every patient will receive individually tailored treatment; “one treatment for one illness” will no longer apply. And Dr Charles Shepherd, Medical Adviser to the ME Association, will discuss a range of ‘hot topics’ including medical research and benefits. Admission by ticket only: £3 to members, £5 to non-members.
Martlets Midnight Walk The biggest fundraising girl’s night out of the year is back. Put Friday 13th June in your diary and join the hundreds of women who come together to have fun, get fit and walk through the streets of Brighton and Hove at midnight to raise money for Martlets Hospice. Now in its eighth year the Martlets Midnight Walk has raised in excess of a million pounds. This has paid for more than 2,500 days of care on the In-Patient unit. These days the Hospice looks after more patients in the comfort of their own homes rather than in the Hospice itself. This kind of care costs just £138 per patient per day. So, it’s easy for every single walker to make a difference to the number of local people the Hospice can care for. The Martlets Midnight Walk really is something that anyone can do. Last year the walk spanned
every generation with walkers aged from 13 to 99! There is always a great atmosphere as women take to the streets of Brighton complete with flashing bunny ears, fancy dress and face paint. You can choose either a 6 or 13 mile walk. Both walks start at midnight from Brighton Racecourse and snake through Brighton & Hove. Marshals are on hand to ensure no one gets lost and the walk ends with a tasty breakfast. Antonia Shepherd, who organises the event, said: “It’s absolutely not about how quickly you can finish the walk, this isn’t a race. For most Midnight Walkers it’s all about dressing up and spending a night walking through Brighton with friends. It’s a girls’ night out really, supporting a local charity. A lot of the women who take part in the walk are doing it in memory of someone who has died. Others may not have used

Coro Nuovo Coro Nuovo is an exciting new project based in Mid Sussex. It is a choir consisting of top singers from top choirs, led by the international opera singer Andrew Rees whose home is in Sussex. What makes Coro Nuovo different from other choirs is that it comprises experienced singers who do very little note bashing but concentrate on the theatre and subtlety of performance, giving the audience a very uplifting experience. Having a Music Director who is a full-time international performer giving tips and coaching is beyond jewels. Andrew brings great enthusiasm, energy and drama to rehearsals and performance. The choir’s President is Dame Josephine Barstow, the soprano, who also lives in Sussex! Another important aim of the choir is that it actively supports and encourages emerging musicians who have a Sussex connection; enabling them to perform with the choir and giving them valuable exposure. Getting a career in music is cut-throat; PR and connections are everything. An opportunity to play with a top choir and have the additional support and valuable advice from an international performer like Andrew is a huge help. Coro Nuovo’s next concert is on 20th July at St Wilfrid’s Church, Haywards Heath, 7.30pm. The theme is ‘Best of British’ and will be saluting 500 years of British music from Tallis to the Beatles. The evening will be celebratory with lots of flag-waving! Kieran Carter a young,
gifted cellist from Sussex will be featuring in the concert. In addition, we welcome Nick Houghton, organist, and Gareth Hancock, répétiteur at Glyndebourne, to accompany. Tickets are £15 or £12.50 concession from the website: www.coronuovo.org.uk or from Kate on 07740 946276.
Carnival comes to Hurstpierpoint Carnival will come to Hurstpierpoint on 5th July with the annual St Lawrence Fair. Building on 700 years of history celebrated in 2013, this year’s Fair will be the familiar mixture of events for children and all village residents. In addition to the procession through the village, there will be a pet show and a treasure hunt. On Friday 4th July in the afternoon, a Teddy Bear’s picnic will take place on South Avenue followed by a children’s disco and family entertainment in the evening. Other events are being added as we speak, so make sure you don’t miss this major event. www. stlawrencefair.org.uk
East Grinstead Art Society The East Grinstead Art society was founded in 1983 by a group of enthusiastic amateur painters to promote art in East Grinstead, bringing together artists of various standards for mutual benefit. Horsted Cahagnes 50 visitors from the Normandy hamlet of Cahagnes have visited Sussex as guests of the villagers of Horsted Keynes. The two communities can trace their joint heritage back to the Norman Conquest when William de Cahaignes, who had fought with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings was given the parish of Horsted. This became Horsted de Cahaignes and, in time, Horsted Keynes. They were formally twinned in 1971, and there have been yearly exchange visits ever since. The Horsted Cahagnes Society (horstedcahagnes.org) promotes cultural and social links. A Garden Party at Broadhurst Manor in May was the highlight of a busy and memorable weekend. The house is built on land settled by the Saxons. The estate’s seizure by the Cahaignes family soon after the Norman Conquest is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Tucked away in a fold of the Sussex countryside, just north of Horsted Keynes, the house and grounds had fallen into severe dilapidation and neglect. Paul and Nicole Calkin, who made it their home four years ago, are painstakingly restoring and conserving the manor and the important and unique Elizabethan garden, which includes a quartered ‘herber’.
26 - 29 June 2014
Guests from both villages explored the grounds with its 16th century fish stews, raised walks and terraces and a newly completed garden. Mr Calkin told visitors something of the long history of the estate, the rare siege door fortifications in the main house, and buried treasure. Farm labourers digging a drain in 1929 uncovered a pot containing 64 gold coins.

Sussex Polo Club Supporting Autism Autism Spectrum Partners (ASP), part of The Disabilities Trust, are delighted to have been selected as the charity being supported by The Comtec Challenge Cup at The Sussex Polo Club in Rowfant on Sunday 13th July. Money raised from the day will specifically go towards equine therapy training for service users of ASP. Equine therapy is development through physical, occupational, and emotional growth through the involvement of horses. It challenges beliefs, values, attitudes and ethics. As prey animals, by their very nature horses have to be able to ‘read’ others immediately in order to stay safe. They do this at an energetic level, understanding in an instant what others are feeling and bringing to the situation. The International Foundation of Equine Assisted Learning state that it is an established fact that our internal thinking, beliefs patterns of behaviour produce an energy that manifests in many ways, including body language,

It is this often unconscious energetic message, or body language, that others respond to more than our actual words or actions. This is what the horse responds to in the moment. These are just some of many ways that equine therapy can help people with autism: developing effective communication, understanding body language, offering honesty and openness, improved understanding, building confidence, empower, engage and support, improving listening skills, understanding boundaries, improve outcomes, collate data for research, raise awareness, responsibility and building relationships. LOCAL Hurstpierpoint Singers
The chairman and committee took the opportunity of the choir’s AGM. on 12th May to welcome Suzanne Norris and thank her for her very generous donation, in memory of her late husband Philip. This had covered the cost of a new electronic piano for the choir. Philip had been a much loved and enthusiastic member of the choir for many years and is still sorely missed after his untimely death in June 2013. Suzanne spoke of his long association with the choir and his enjoyment in participating in its musical activities. Latterly he had acted as membership secretary and had also taken on responsibility for publicity. She felt that the piano was a very fitting tribute to him, the purchase of which he would have wholeheartedly approved. Pam Graham, a former chairperson, presented Suzanne with a bouquet on behalf of the members and Paul Simpson the musical director, gave a short impromptu demonstration of the piano for Suzanne’s benefit. (photo) Everyone then retired for a cup of coffee and slice of celebration cake, to mark the occasion, before returning to the business of the AGM. The Singers reconvene on 8th September to begin rehearsals for the Village Christmas Concert and spring performance of Fauré’s Requiem. Singers are welcome in all parts, anyone interested please ring Joan Denley for details on 01273 834534.

Meet the event mascot, Charlie Rabbit, who will get the rides underway from The Hassocks pub by the railway station between 10.30am and 11.00am (registration from 9.30am). There will also be the chance to win great prizes including a child’s mountain bike and a month’s subscription to Hassocks Freedom Leisure sports centre. Newly refurbished with the help of locally based companies wherever possible, the new office is managed by Kirsty Perryman-Best. “As a vibrant commuter town, Haywards Heath attracts both national and independent local companies,” says Kirsty. “I’ve rarely come across an area where so many local companies are flourishing, particularly in recent years. In the last 6 months, business confidence seems to have had a real boost, with many new businesses opening up. There is a definite local feel to the other professionals I am dealing with and it is a real pleasure to be acting for people in relation to properties that are so local to the ODT office.” While the initial focus of ODT’s Haywards Heath office is on Commercial & Residential Property, the firm also specialises in Business Law, Litigation and Wills & Probate and

When is the right time to
say goodbye?
Susan Gregersen DVM, MBA, MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon & Founder Vets2Home Veterinary Service
When is the right time to say goodbye to a pet? With 15 years’ experience as a vet, this is still one of the most difficult questions to answer. But one thing is certain: a good life deserves a respectful and gentle departure at the end, paving the way for happy memories.
Because we are experts in this field, Vets2Home now specialises in helping families have time for a peaceful goodbye with their pet – in the comfort of their own home. Many animal-loving people (and even vet colleagues) have very different definitions of what makes a “happy” pet and what a good pet life should or shouldn’t include at the end. Having started Vets2Home Veterinary Service in Sussex nine years ago, treating pets in their own home, I know for a fact that one major “happy factor” for any animal is to stay pain and stress-free, for as long as possible. So when should you give your pet a peaceful and dignified end, free of stress and pain? Although we often hear pet owners express the secret wish that their pet will go quietly in his or her sleep this almost never happens, or usually not without some degree of suffering first something we allow to happen to humans but which we can spare our animals.
Having visited and helped thousands of pets at home, I strongly believe the right time may be approaching soon when both your pet and you lose the joy in your life together, whether this is due to old age or unmanageable illness. The reasons are many – from not eating, or eating excessively but with severe weight loss, poor mobility, hidden pain, vocalising, hiding, not interacting, soiling inappropriately, and sleeping a lot – or not at all. Some of which could be indications of
what I call “petzheimers” which makes your elderly pet a completely different “person”. When deciding when and how to intervene – with investigations or at-home hospice care – it is vital to remember why we have these loyal loving creatures in our lives. They give us such joy, loyalty, companionship and much more, and in return we give them our love, food and shelter – and often even our bed! That is why I strongly believe the one last gesture of love we can show our pets is a calm, respectful end – without stress, pain or suffering, when it is most needed and not before. That goodbye should ideally be at home, surrounded by loved ones, familiar smells and sounds, pain-free and in that favourite spot. At Vets2Home we are devoted to finding out what joy and quality of life really means to your pet and to you by giving you advice by phone, email or on a home visit. As life is unpredictable, we are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for end-of-life support consultations, guidance, medical treatment and home visits. As a real animal-lover and a vet, I want to leave owners with only happy memories of a much-loved pet. I actually feel honoured to be able to give our patients a dignified and gentle, pain-free departure, and have been humbled and grateful to receive many kind words from so many appreciative clients afterwards. If you would like to hear more about how we can help you and your pet please visit www.vets2home.co.uk, email us on contact@vets2home.co.uk or ring us on 01273 842115 for an informal chat. Blooming Times
Blossom end Rot may
Blossom End Rot mostly affects tomatoes, aubergines and peppers. Novice gardeners are rendered bemused by this condition: The plant grows reasonably well but produces fruits with unsightly black blotches – what has gone wrong? Calcium deficiency, bought on by erratic watering, is the cause. Garden soils and composts contain essential minerals but plants cannot absorb them if the soil is waterlogged or dry. This lack of nutrient makes plant cells distort and collapse. The cells furthest away from the roots are under the most stress, hence the deformity appearing at the ‘Blossom End’. Airborne mould spores swiftly take advantage of the ‘wound’ and rot sets in. Look out for this condition and take action at the first sign.
Most greenhouse crops will require daily watering – twice in really hot weather. Head in the sun, damp at the roots is the key. Most greenhouse crops will require daily watering – twice in really hot weather. They need a good drench directly onto the soil; sprinkling the leaves is not nearly enough. In any case, peppers, tomatoes and aubergines hate getting their foliage wet. Head in the sun, damp at the roots is the key. I have never liked grow bags as I don’t think they contain enough soil to prevent drying out. I grow

sound like a punch line from a Les Dawson joke, but it can be a serious problem in the greenhouse. one tomato plant per 12 inch pot, aubergines and peppers in individual 10 inch pots. If you have great success with grow bags, I salute your exemplary watering regime! A general tomato fertiliser will also suit aubergines and peppers. Use strong canes to provide support – the plants make rapid, heavy growth. Whitefly love greenhouse crops, infesting plants as soon as your back is turned. Modern systemic insecticides are more user-friendly than their old counterparts but check the instructions carefully; some do not recommend the harvesting of crops for several days after the chemical has been applied. Sticky paper whitefly traps are effective but nonspecific, trapping all insects in their path, including useful pollinating bees and hoverflies. Instead of keeping a trap randomly dangling on a string, target individual plants by holding a trap in one hand, horizontally above the plant, sticky side down. Now brush the leaves with the other hand. Like helicopters, whiteflies take off vertically and will stick to the underside of the trap. Keep inquisitive pets well away from sticky traps. I once had to take a furious Birman cat to the ‘hairdressers’. She didn’t speak to me for weeks … Although Blossom End Rot looks awful, it’s not fatal. The ‘good’ news is that it’s a disorder, not a disease. You don’t want mould spores affecting other plants, so pick off the damaged fruits – they can be safely composted. Concentrate on perfecting your watering skills and the problem will disappear. www.sussexliving.com

in June, much of the village’s creative talent will be on display to the public at the Henfield Festival of Gardens and Arts. Entry is free. I visited two of the organisers, Ellen and David Hayes, to discover what’s in store on 14-15th June and found an eclectic choice of art, music, performance and activity from Saturday morning to Sunday evening. Visitors can use the maze of ‘twittens’ and footpaths to explore the village, and the Henfield Community Minibus is offering a dial-a ride service for anyone wishing to be collected or taken home. 27 venues are showing gardens or arts & crafts and most are serving teas in anticipation of high attendances. This is the event’s 15th year and local charities will benefit. This year’s main beneficiary is the 1st Henfield Scout group, the oldest existing Scout group in the world, founded in 1907. The group’s hut is in dire need of replacement and funds are needed to ensure the continuation of a meeting place to serve the youth of the village. A selection of local artists’ work will be showing at Cat Brown’s house and garden at 7 Northcroft, where Victoria Lovell sculpts beautiful outdoor ceramic animals and Paul Cox, who received a Henry Moore scholarship for his work, will be showing his garden sculptures and smaller decorative pieces. Katherine Lawrie will have her beautiful silver jewellery, impressed with leaves and precious stones along with more than 20 other artists working in ceramics, paint and mixed media. Anne Garmston will be opening her garden as a backdrop for the Henfield Spinners and Weavers, of which she is an active member. Anne is hoping to have two orphaned lambs in attendance to show continued on next page SuSSex Living June 2014

There will be two whole fleeces waiting to be transformed and visitors can gain an insight into this reviving craft while following a trail through the garden past chickens, fruit trees and vegetables. No.1-6 Park Road is a fine example of Edwardian terrace front gardens and The Golden Hen in Golden Square has a great old-fashioned cottage garden, bursting with roses, pinks, honeysuckle and foxgloves, while cards and glass painting are on sale among the flowers. A 2 1/2 acre garden awaits next to the Downslink Path at Rushmear House in Sandy Lane. Herbaceous flower beds, a water feature and pond complement the newly established allotments and local artists are showing sculptures in the meadow. Woodturned items will be on sale at 4 Myrtle Terrace and nearby, at 14 Southview Terrace, a scent garden has been recently designed, filled with jasmine, roses and honeysuckle.

Members of Henfield Art Club will be showing at the Scout Hut in Tanyard and Maidment Court will be exhibiting a wonderful miniature display created by the ladies of the Henfield Dolls House Project Group, entitled ‘Messing Around on the River’. No.5 Benson Road is showing photography, bespoke canvases and textiles from local artists and cakes and savouries will be available while you browse. The Festival is not only about art and gardens. A comprehensive choice of music, dance and song will entertain throughout the weekend: Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men will be performing and holding a workshop on Saturday; the Soho Village Jazz Band will be playing in the garden of the White Hart, St Peter’s Church is hosting a ukulele workshop and a barbershop style quartet of ladies will be performing at The Free Church. Dyke
Farm House Charity Open Garden On Sunday 29th June, there will be a rare opportunity to explore one of the most interesting and vibrant gardens in Mid Sussex. Ngaire ‘Nigs’ Digby will open her Dyke Farm House garden at Poynings to visitors in the afternoon. All the money donated will go to the Martlets Hospice, so it is one of those happy occasions when you can be charitable and self-indulgent at the same time. The house and its 2 acres of garden are tucked under the lee of the Downs below Devil’s Dyke. It’s an idyllic setting perfectly complemented by the ancient 17th century farmhouse with its pale rose brickwork and leaded windows. The garden is a ‘new’ one in the sense that at only five years old it is still developing under the dynamic management of its owner. When the Digbys arrived, they found that the land had been largely uncared for. “We took down 50 conifers and the whole place was seriously overgrown,” Nigs told me. “Clearly, we needed a plan.” They called in help from a local gardener and from a talented landscape garden designer who described his vision for the garden as being like its owner: colourful and exuberant. “Nigs has bags of energy and is a very keen gardener, so I made sure that plants, and plenty of them, were included. The kitchen garden is a potager which Nigs has planted up with a mixture of veg and flowers. And

the borders have been designed for successional planting to give colour from spring through to autumn, including some bulbs that phase in and out of flower.” Ngaire’s enthusiastic, generous nature has clearly had a big influence on the garden design. “In the entrance border, we’ve used rich pinks and purples, punctuated with acid green to create an almost ‘overblown’ effect contained within box hedging. In contrast to this exuberance, the lawn borders have been planted with Cornus, Miscanthus and a range of herbaceous perennials to provide a strong, rhythmic design.” If the garden sounds busy and dense, it is not, for there is an elegant lawn and gentle pathways, a pool and a hazel walk, and central to everything is a truly vast chestnut tree. The spectacular view from the lawn is unimpeded all the way to the Surrey Hills and to the west, the faint purple line on the horizon could even be Hampshire.

Make something am
Beachcombing is lots of fun – but if you can make something from your finds, you will have a totally unique piece to enjoy in your home.
I love to beachcomb. I cannot resist old weathered bits of wood cast up by a receding tide and my pockets will always return full after a day by the sea. The only problem is that individual bits of flotsam eventually make a pile of unused wood after a summer season of beach walking – what to do with all those treasures? I dug around my collection of driftwood to find my favourite pieces, then arranged them this way and that until I discovered which worked well together. If you have pieces of unused wood lying around, this is an ideal way to spark an idea to utilise them. I decided to make a frame that would show off each plank’s unique qualities without altering any individual piece. First, I cut a piece of plywood, found in a skip, to the dimensions about a centimetre smaller than the finished frame – this can be as large or small as you choose. I wanted to
I love to beachco mb. make a pinboard to frame with driftwood, so I painted the plywood on one side with a good quality white emulsion, although any muted colour would suit the bleached quality of the driftwood. I then screwed two D ring fixings to the back and attached string between them so that I could hang the finished frame on the wall. Next, I arranged roughly similar width pieces of driftwood around the edges. You could vary this by using lots of layers of smaller pieces depending
on the shape of the wood you are using. Once I’d found a pleasing combination that looked neither too ordered nor too random, I glued the pieces around the edge of the plywood using strong builders’ adhesive. It’s best to arrange the wood so the plywood edge doesn’t show from the front – that way, the weathered quality of the driftwood is retained rather than the too straight lines of the ply. Once the glue has set, the pinboard can be used to display messages, reminders, photos or anything you wish. Alternatively, replace the plywood with a favourite painting, photograph or mirror and create a focal point for your home that is all your own. SuSSex Living June 2014

My name is Nicole and I am a green juicer. There, I’m out of the closet. No more denial – I am ready to come clean. Most days, you’ll fi nd me clutching a large plastic sports bottle containing what looks like murky pond dredgings – typically kale, apple, celery, cucumber, ginger, all freshly pressed that morning. Why? Well, why not? Who can argue with the health and beauty benefits of a nutrient dense cocktail in one easy drink? You certainly wouldn’t eat a whole bag of kale, several apples, a few stalks of celery, half a cucumber, a chunk of lemon and an inch of ginger in one sitting. The beauty of juicing is that you’re not only guaranteed to get your five a day – you’ll be getting 15, or 25! Healthwise, this is bound to have some seriously positive effects. Kickstart your metabolism
and shed those extra pounds once and for all, with Fit For Moore’s unique bite-sized fitness classes.
Change your body
in 30 minutes Looking to get in shape for the summer but feel hamstrung by a hectic schedule? Lisa Moore has the answer. Founder of Fit For Moore, Lisa and her team offer unique 30-minute classes that promise to help you lose weight, shape up and improve your health – all within an impressively tight timeframe. “People juggling busy lifestyles don’t have hours to spend working in the gym,” she explains. “With these classes, they can achieve the same results in half the time.” Lisa was one of the first personal trainers in the UK to offer the ’30 Minute Metabolic Effect’ – a restbased workout that encourages the body to continue burning fat for up to 48 hours after exercising. Through alternating periods of intense activity and rest, the classes aim to kickstart sluggish metabolisms and burn fat fast. Each person sets their own pace, making it ideal for anybody worried about falling behind the group. “Unlike High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), where you’re told when and how long to work at high intensity, this class allows you to work at your own level of intensity, then choose when and how long to rest, then join back in when recovered,” says Lisa. “It’s simple, and it doesn’t matter how fit you are – it’s open to everyone.” The Fit For Moore studio in Haywards Heath offers morning, lunchtime and evening sessions, making it easy to squeeze a workout into even the most packed schedule. Best of all, you’ll continue to burn fat all day long! In addition, a new 60+ active class for ladies started in April and there are now two classes running on a Monday and Thursday. Lisa has a holistic approach to health that focuses on overhauling the metabolism, altering the body’s hormones to overcome the impact of stress and a hectic lifestyle. There is a particular emphasis on nutrition – Fit For Moore offer a balanced
packed lunch to anybody who attends the lunchtime classes, taking the hassle out of eating healthily during the week. “As a personal trainer, it’s all about helping my clients get results,” Lisa says. “Most people sign up to a 3, 6 or 12-month programme, and that involves education about health and nutrition as well as regular classes.” Fit for Moore have been training small groups of private clients for many years – the oldest group has been going for 20 years! – and this option is now available in Haywards Heath. Small Group Training (for up to 4) uses the principles of Metabolic Effect training and is tailored to both individual and group goals. Lisa focuses on all areas of health and fitness, including nutrition and other relevant training methods to enhance core strength, flexibility and stamina. Fit for Moore recognise the importance of mind/ body balance. A new yoga-based training programme will be introduced very soon to help you achieve physical equiplibrium while calming the mind.

MIND BODY SOUL Holistic perspectives and complementary approaches to health & wellbeing
Reflexology is a deeply relaxing holistic therapy suitable for all. gentle, non-invasive and drug-free, it encourages the body to balance and heal itself.
Eager to find out more about this popular complementary treatment, I spoke to Matt Campbell, a qualified reflexologist and member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists, who was kind enough to explain the theory and practice, as well as the therapeutic benefits. “Reflexology involves applying compression techniques with the fi nger or thumbs to specific points (‘reflexes’) on the feet, and sometimes hands too. These points form a mini map of the entire body, and the application of pressure here can encourage healing in other parts of the body. We believe the human body is a dynamic energy system in a constant state of change and that energy flows through the body in specific channels or pathways. If there is a blockage or congestion in this flow of energy, then the body will be in a state of ‘dis-ease’. Pressure
upon any part of a particular zone can have an effect on another part in the same zone. Reflexologists are skilled at decongesting the body, by working with the body’s energy lines or zones and by manipulating the feet’s ‘reflexes’, helping the body (and mind) to return to a state of health. Reflexology has been known to bring about relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, including anxiety/stress, back and nervous problems, digestive disorders, migraines, insomnia, sinusitis and many more. Reflexology is particularly beneficial when dealing with stress related conditions and an increasing number of people are using this safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonising the body in the stressful world we live in today. It is only when the body is relaxed that healing can take place.”

Brenda Bennett Stapleton 1914-2014
Lover of
&

opera
it is an honour to be paying tribute to the
remarkable life of a lady who i’d love to
have met in person.
Local teenager Alex Broadley knew exactly what he wanted to do for his school’s ‘Make A Difference Day’. He cooked lunch for a very charming old lady before treating her to a musical solo performance of voice and trumpet. Alex’ mother, Olwen Broadley, thought we should meet her too. The lady’s name was Brenda Stapleton. She passed away on 7th April at St Catherine’s Hospice, Crawley, two weeks short of her 100th birthday. It was probably the only curtain call she had ever missed and was particularly sad, because if anyone ever deserved to take a bow after a long and inspiring life, it was Brenda. Under her maiden name, Brenda Bennett, she was a huge star of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in the 1930s, enchanting Gilbert & Sullivan audiences around the world. And yet, although she was a leading light in these most English of English light operas, Brenda was not English, had received no formal training in an English academy and did not, as was traditional, serve her time in the chorus of the company before climbing her way up to the principal roles.
Brenda Bennett was born on 21st April 1914 on the other side of the Atlantic in Winnipeg, Canada. Winnipeg is the capital of Ontario, one of the great prairie states, and pretty much in the centre of Canada. In those days, it would have seemed a very long way indeed from the bright lights of London’s Savoy Theatre, the home of the D’Oyly Carte. continued on next page SuSSex Living June 2014

Brenda began her stage career as a ballet dancer before taking singing lessons and discovering that she had a natural talent for musical comedy. Aged 19 she appeared in a number of starring roles with the Winnipeg Light Opera and in the same year appeared as a dancer in local revues, before again taking the title role in Madame Sherry with the Little Theatre Company. It was probably while performing in this show that Brenda was ‘talent spotted’ by a Broadway talent scout on the lookout, apparently, for a dancer who could sing to take over the lead role in The Belle of New York.
Brenda Bennett was a star at the
D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in the 1930s, enchanting Gilbert & Sullivan audiences around the world. Like many other aspiring young actresses before her, Brenda went to New York and worked on Broadway for six months. There she saved up enough money for a passage to England where she hoped to gain entry to the Royal Academy of Music. At the age of 21, she duly took the audition and passed – but there was a snag: she couldn’t afford the fees. So, with only ten pounds in her pocket, she tried out for the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company hoping, I imagine, that she would be picked for the chorus. Amazingly, she was unsuccessful in that ambition because, in a complete break with tradition, she was immediately hired as a Principal, with the only proviso that she lose her Canadian accent forthwith! www.sussexliving.com

She developed a taste for champagne and was engaged to be married four times. In the somewhat stilted language of the age, The Tatler reported in its April 1936 edition under the heading A New Savoyard that “Miss Brenda Bennett, who hails from Canada is to share the leading soprano roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan Operas...” Our girl from the Canadian heartland had come a very long way in a very short time. Then began a whirlwind of touring with the company, staying in fi ne hotels, being lauded as a superstar and receiving any number of marriage proposals. She developed a taste for champagne and was engaged to be married four times. Her opening night in the New York she had left only 18 months earlier when she played Yum Yum in The Mikado, was regarded as a ‘triumph’ by the critics, and when she made a brief fl ying visit to Winnipeg she was mobbed at the airport. How much Brenda’s life had changed is, I think, shown by a single telegram amongst the many that she kept. It says simply ‘CAN YOU HAVE TEA THEN COCKTAIL PARTY LADY REDESDALE TUESDAY?’ It is signed ‘Jumbo’. Brenda met John Stapleton when he was home on leave from his post as a senior colonial administrator in Nigeria. He was immediately smitten. When he came to visit Brenda in The Savoy where she was being cared for having temporarily lost her voice through a minor illness, she miraculously regained it and decided that John was the one for her. It is a strange irony that her

After they married in 1940, Brenda never sang professionally again. Instead, she trained as a stenographer so that she could go out to Nigeria to join John.
future husband should have helped her recover her voice, because after they married in 1940, incredibly, she never sang professionally again. Instead, determined to share her husband’s life, she trained as a stenographer at Canada House so that she could go out to Nigeria and join him. Of course, the nation was at war, so simply getting on an aeroplane and flying out to Nigeria was not an option, so instead she went by ship as part of a convoy to West Africa. Although this could be a perilous journey, Brenda remembered it primarily for the very jolly parties they had on board. Over the succeeding years, she raised three children, returning to England for the birth of each one and, in 1956, she and John built a beautiful home in Ashurst Wood. Brenda became a much loved, energetic and bubbly member of the community, tireless in her support for good causes and village activities. She sang occasionally on a purely amateur basis and never ever lost her taste for champagne. A truly extraordinary person, she was a great beauty and maintained a fitness regime which included practising yoga in the nude. This she did until quite late in life on the discreet terrace of the rear of the house which had been built to overlook a stunning view of the Sussex Weald.
Having walked away from the most glittering of careers, she never went back – that is until 2011, 72 years after she left The Savoy, when she returned as a guest for one night. They made a great fuss of the old lady. The pianist in the Piano Bar played selections from the Savoy Operas. Staff queued to have their photographs taken with her and the Manager wrote to her saying: “Thank you for choosing The Savoy as your London home again.” Brenda drank champagne with her friends two days before she died. Accompanied by his mother, Alex Broadly went to visit her at the Hospice. He sang for her again and she replied in a tiny trembly voice with a word-perfect rendition of ‘Three Little Maids From School Are We’. Over 200 people came to Brenda’s funeral where her coffi n, at her insistence, was shocking pink with purple flowers and, after the service, the mourners drank a great deal of fi zz. What a lady. What a life! In compiling this brief biography, I received very great help from Gloria Pienaar, Brenda’s constant and caring companion for 10 years, and from Anna Stapleton, her loving daughter. Putting ‘Brenda Bennett D’Oyly Carte’ into Google will take you to websites where you can hear her perform at the height of her fame.

Let’s hear it for Dad As Father’s Day approaches, it’s good to remind ourselves how the role of fathers has changed over the decades. Dads are more important than ever before. When Father’s Day was first inaugurated in the US during the early 20th century, you wouldn’t catch the average dad changing a nappy. He was a patriarchal figure who worked long hours, hid behind a newspaper at breakfast and left the bedtime story and the school run to his long-suffering wife. Perhaps that’s why the original US national holiday aimed at dads took so long to get off the ground. Father’s Day was initially proposed in 1910 by Washington resident Sonora Smart Dodd, whose own father lovingly raised his six children as a single parent. Unlike Mother’s Day, which became an official national holiday just six years after its foundation, the celebration was only signed into law by President Nixon in 1972. It took another two decades to really catch on in the UK - and even today, we spend an average
60
SuSSex Living June 2014
of 75% more on Mother’s Day than we do on the paternal equivalent. Mums can traditionally expect bouquets, breakfast in bed and jewellery. Dads are lucky if they get a humorous fart card and an awkward hug. But things are changing. Statistics released last year by the Modern Fatherhood Project show that mothers and fathers are sharing parenting duties more equally than ever before. During the noughties, the average weekly working hours of fathers in two-parent households fell from 47 to 45 hours. The proportion of households with two full-time earners increased from 26% in 2001 to 29% in 2011, and only a fifth of families now operate under the traditional male breadwinner model. “This new data based on modern fatherhood gives a fascinating insight into men’s work and activities with children,” said Svetlana Speight, Research Director at NatCen Social Research. “As families change and evolve, it is clear that fathers’ involvement and responsibilities are extending beyond the financial sphere.” Another fascinating development is the sharp www.sussexliving.com
rise in the numbers of stay-at-home dads. Men now make up nearly 10% of those who care for children while their partner goes out to work. At the end of 2012, there were 227,000 men staying at home to look after family – a rise of 19,000 from the previous year. A study by Aviva suggests that there are 10 times as many stay-at-home dads today than there were a decade ago, and more than a quarter of dads give up work or reduce their working hours after the birth of their children. Heartwarmingly, around half of full-time dads say that they feel ‘lucky’ to have the opportunity to spend more time with their kids.
Children with actively involved fathers have stronger verbal skills, fewer behavioural problems, get better grades and show an increase in problem solving capacity.

Quality & Style, Classics & Fashions We’re also just now beginning to understand how important the father-child relationship really is. Hundreds of independent studies have shown that a father’s love is one of the greatest influences on personality development – possibly even more important than the love of a mother. Children with actively involved fathers have stronger verbal skills, display fewer behavioural problems at school, get better grades and show an increase in problem solving capacity. Not only are the nation’s dads more involved in their children’s upbringing than ever before, they are also playing a far more crucial role. In other words: dads are great. This Father’s Day on Sunday 15th June, why not skip the fart card and surprise your dad with an unexpected treat. It could be an adventure – think yachting, hang gliding, rock climbing, geocaching or a fishing trip – or perhaps something a little gentler: a day at the races, a country pub lunch or just an afternoon of rambling around the Mid Sussex countryside. You needn’t blow the budget, just make sure your dad knows how special he really is.

I have nothing against Peru or Mexico, but however wonderful Peruvian asparagus may taste in Lima or Cuzco and however delicious Mexican asparagus may be in Guadalajara or Mexico City, it doesn’t travel at all well to England. As far as asparagus goes, there’s no question about it: English is best. And now is the time for it. To intensify its already undoubted deliciousness, roast it rather than boil it; I promise you’ll never boil asparagus again. Broad beans are another long awaited delight now at their very best. If you look them up in Larousse Gastronomique, you’ll find a subtle dig at the English: What’s the difference between broad beans à l’anglaise and broad beans à la française? The French skin the beans, the English don’t.
Food
Glorious It’s a chore I know, but however young and tender, broad beans are much better if, after getting them out of their pods, you skin them (making sure you first steam them or soak them in boiling water for a couple of minutes.) With peeling and skinning, there is a huge loss of weight. When I last did the weighing, 1kg of beans produced 158 podded beans weighing 280g. Skinned, this went down to 175g. And were they delicious and well worth the effort? Oh yes, indeed. The end of June sees the Isle of Man Queenie Festival, so if you are fond of baby scallops, that’s where you need to go. While there, you might take in the somewhat unlikely Manx Kipper Museum. You could, of course, stay at home and make Huntingdon Fried Scallops. I found the recipe in Fish by Sophie Grigson and William Black. They found it in British Cookery by Lizzie Boyd. Neither Grigson, Black, Boyd or I could find out where the Huntingdon comes from – but if perchance you know, please let me know.
Food
Huntingdon Fried Scallops INGREDIENTS:
1 tbsp olive oil 1 lemon, juiced 1 tbsp chopped parsley 8-12 scallops 75g ham, very finely chopped 75g white breadcrumbs
30g freshly grated parmesan cheese Seasoned plain flour 1 egg, beaten Vegetable oil (not olive) for deep frying Salt and pepper Lemon slices or wedges for serving
1. Mix the olive oil with the lemon juice, parsley and some salt and pepper. Stir in the scallops and leave them to marinate for a good half hour. 2. Mix the ham with the parmesan and breadcrumbs. 3. Drain the scallops and coat them in seasoned flour, then dip them in the egg. Now coat them with the ham/ cheese/breadcrumb mixture, pressing it on firmly. Put in the fridge and leave to set for at least 30 mins. 4. Deep fry the scallops until they are brown and crisp. Drain on kitchen paper and serve with lemon slices.
eton mess Eton’s best known holiday takes place on the so-called Fourth of June, a celebration of the birthday in 1798 of Eton’s greatest patron, King George III. Rather in the way that at Cambridge, May Week happens in June, at Eton the 4th of June is no longer celebrated on 4th June but on the Wednesday before the first weekend in June. Obviously a different kind of Eton Mess! So, lots of strawberries, lots of whipped double cream and one or two ready-made meringues, broken into chewable chunks. Hull the strawberries, cut them up, mix everything together. Open the champagne!

Recycling tips for summer trips Summer is finally here but parties, picnics, and barbecues can create a small mountain of rubbish, so could we recycle more? In West Sussex your glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles - including sun cream lotions, cans, paper and card can be recycled at home provided they are dry, clean and loose - not wet, dirty or tied in plastic bags. If you having a gathering this summer, why not provide a container for people to place their empty drinks cans, bottles and juice cartons in? With packets of burgers or sausages, the outer cardboard can be recycled but not the plastic inner containing the food. Please pop plastic trays and tubs such as meat trays and coleslaw tubs in your rubbish bin. Remember only plastic bottles can be placed in your recycling bin. Avoid wasting food by only cooking enough for those attending, not the whole street! Any leftover food that doesn’t get used up can be placed in your rubbish bin. Tin foil and foil packaging can be recycled as long as there is no food or leftovers on it. If you use a disposable aluminium BBQ the used tray must not be placed in your recycling bin, wait until the ash is cold and put it in your rubbish bin. Used camping gas canisters should never be put in a recycling or rubbish bin because they are explosive. Instead take them to your local Household Waste Recycling Site. To find your nearest site please visit www.recycleforwestsussex.gov.uk . Use re-usable containers for picnics instead of wrapping food in plastic film or foil. The plastic film can’t be recycled and the foil can only be recycled if it is clean. Consider using plates and cutlery that can be washed and reused rather than disposable products that cannot be recycled. Any leftover waste should of course be taken home and binned. Summertime… and both the weather and recycling are easy! So here’s to another Great British Summer from all at Recycle for West Sussex.

Local Walk
Dormansland
Walk
At the end of Ford Manor Road by the entrance to the drive signed to Greathed Manor, take the signed path on your left. Follow along a left-hand field edge to join the B2018. Please note that at the time of surveying the walk, the line of the path was blocked by a fallen tree at the point where it meets the B2018. This can be overcome by side stepping a few paces to your right. On reaching the road, turn right along the pavement for about 200 metres; where the pavement ends, cross to the signed footpath opposite. Ignore a path off to your left and maintain direction ahead along a left-hand field edge. At the bottom of the field, go through a metal gate and over a stile. Ignore paths off to your right and left and follow a righthand field edge through a succession of stiles and small footbridges to the northern tip of Margaret’s Wood. Go through a wooden gate and over a footbridge and veer half left, slightly uphill, to the distant buildings of Starborough Farm. On reaching the buildings, join a grassy track which leads out to a gravel track. Turn right for a few yards, then look for a stile in the hedge on your left and go over this to join a surfaced track. Turn right along this track and follow it out to join an unclassified road. Cross the road and carry on ahead along a drive signed to the Coach House. Before reaching a pair of metal gates, look for a

Go over this and follow round the periphery of the buildings of Starborough Castle along a left-hand field edge. The original castle dates from 1341 and was destroyed on the instructions of Oliver Cromwell in 1648. Now only the moat survives. The current building occupying the site of the castle was built in 1754 and is Grade II listed. It operates as a luxury B&B establishment. To resume the walk, halfway down the field, look for a stile on your left and go over this and on to a drive. Turn right along this pleasant tree-lined drive and out to join the B2028. Turn right and after about 100 metres, turn left along a signed bridleway opposite Starborough Road. Follow the obvious path ahead which eventually becomes a sunken way, dipping downhill to a metal gate. off to your left. Follow the sandy track past the isolated Little Worth Cottage to enter woodland. Shortly after passing a house on your right, the path joins a gravel track where you should carry on ahead. The track bears left towards the buildings of Home Farm before bearing right uphill on a signed bridleway along a surfaced track. Stay on this track, passing through a pair of brick pillars and ignore crossing paths, to arrive back at the end of Ford Manor Road and the start of the walk.

Getting better never stops With outstanding results placing St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School among the top 250 in the country, the school provides a safe and happy environment in which every child can flourish. The high level of attainment at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School comes from high expectations, an ethos of achievement for all and, most importantly, team effort. “I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved, but our success is based on a partnership between talented staff, supportive parents and eager children, all signing up to a culture of high standards of work and behaviour,” explains Head Teacher, Catherine Walker. As OFSTED noted, “the Head Teacher and staff have built a highly harmonious learning community” and this is clearly appreciated and valued by parents, as 100% would recommend St Joseph’s. The St Joseph’s Pledge is also integral to the school. It promotes the school’s values of behaviour and community, setting out expectations and creating firm but fair boundaries. Since joining the school in January 2013, Catherine Walker has overseen a period of growth and expansion to ensure the school’s buildings and facilities reflect the high standards of learning and achievement. This has included building a stateof-the-art Early Years Block, additional classrooms, a new basketball court, outdoor table tennis facilities, along with considerable investment in IT equipment. St Joseph’s also enjoys wonderful grounds, having both woodland, used for environmental studies and artwork – and playing fields, used for a wide variety of team sports and physical activities, at its disposal. The school has strong links with Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club who are regular visitors. Along with extracurricular football, there is a weekly
running club, athletics coaching and cross-country and netball clubs. Music is enjoyed throughout the school, with specialist teaching and opportunities for peripatetic music lessons available. With a long tradition of choral and liturgical music, the children also get plenty of opportunity to sing. “We have strong links to the church next door where the acoustics are incredible. When I first heard the children sing there, it was a spine-tingling moment,” says Catherine Walker. There is specialist teaching in Modern Languages, and Spanish is taught throughout the school. An Early Bird Breakfast Club will start from September at 7.30am, giving the children a chance to enjoy a sociable breakfast before learning

And while we’re proud of our achievements, we’re great believers in the Olympic motto: Getting Better Never Stops,” smiles the Head.

History
Susan Pope had never really known what happened to her father during World War II. Like most men who experienced those years he never talked about it, preferring to change the subject when curious family members enquired. Even Susan’s husband John, who had served in the army, had no luck fi nding out about those intense, anxious times. When Susan (pictured overleaf ) cleared out the attic and discovered boxes from Eric’s past, it felt as though she had stumbled upon a 70-year-old time capsule. She found out that her father had been a RAF fl ight engineer on Stirling bombers, serving in England, then Algeria, North Africa and Italy. She was astounded to fi nd his log book, fl ight helmet, dozens of photographs and numerous day-to-day items that would have served him during missions here and overseas. I was able to take a close look at Eric’s belongings at Wings Museum near Balcombe where they are honoured with a permanent display, thanks to Susan’s donation. It was
Remembering
World War II humbling to read the messages written on the back of his squadron group photograph. “We’ve been through hell together, We have weathered the storm, Good luck Eric…” said one. Another wrote: “Keep ‘em flying”. Keep ‘em flying, he did. I picked up Eric’s aircraft tyre gauge, turned pages of his copious notes painstakingly illustrated with pencil diagrams. This was life-anddeath work – pilots and crew depended on his expertise and he made certain he gave his all to the job. Picking up Eric’s oxygen mask, nearly disintegrated with time, I was struck by how difficult it would have been

for men who experienced those days to share their memories with anyone who hadn’t been there. It was as though he’d packed up that period of his life and kept it safe and untouched. Perhaps he occasionally opened the boxes, but I’m guessing that his memories probably remained as sharp as they were private throughout his life. Eric married his sweetheart Audrey in 1944 in Tooting, South London. Several days later he was called to serve abroad and didn’t see his new bride for what must have felt like an eternity. Susan found her mum’s letters to Eric; I could imagine her anxiety of not knowing what would happen to him, so soon after their wedding. When Susan was born in 1945, Eric was in Africa and received a telegram from Susan’s grandmother telling him he’d just become a dad. It wasn’t until 1947 that he was discharged and could become a family man. He eventually settled in Hurstpierpoint where his family lived for over 50 years. Eric served on fl ights; it was his job to keep planes in the air. I saw his escape map and spread it out to see where he might have potentially had to bail out in an emergency. These maps, printed on silk, were often used as scarves by pilots because they took the scratch out of their jacket collars www.sussexliving.com

when they had to keep turning their head looking for the enemy. Eric’s flying helmet looked as supple as the day he’d packed it away – the headset fallen silent where once it would have bristled with instructions and co-ordinates. It was easy to imagine the tension in the cabin. Bomber crews had a low life expectancy, the odds of survival falling with the number of missions. Eric would have lost close friends, which must have made it doubly important to keep their memories alive in his belongings. His dog tags etched with his name lay next to his blue cap – that particular shade of RAF blue associated forever in the consciousness of a nation with those six crucial years of confl ict. I found a small but poignant reminder of the risks of being posted in Algeria: a small folded paper, printed with translations of Arabic phrases to be used if captured. Their basic gist was that a captive would be worth more alive than dead. The phrase ‘Take me to the English and you will be rewarded’ may have made the continued on nex t page SuS Se x Li v i ng June 2014

difference between ending up shot in a foreign desert and being reunited with friends and, ultimately, family. ‘Much money’ and ‘Friend’ were other indispensable words translated into English interpretations of a wholly incomprehensible language. Sifting through Eric’s belongings is akin to being offered a looking glass to a not so very distant past. His everyday items are catalogued in laborious handwriting – ‘three vests, three pairs of drawers, a torch, a sweater…’. He even kept the pencil he used to make his diagrams of the Stirling hydraulic system. The pencil’s point is blunted; the last time it was used was likely to have been Eric meticulously recording observations in one of his many notebooks. It is history like this where a comprehensive, accessible museum run by true enthusiasts is invaluable. Wings Museum can teach the next generation of the sacrifice made by their ancestors so that we may live in peace. A curious child or teenager can see the things Eric left in his attic and be shown the connection with their own freedoms and advantages. It is vitally important to remember; these were the people who saved our home and made it safe for us to live in.

Above: Sue Pope with Daniel Hunt, Wings Museum curator (right) and Tony Hibling, RAFA representative (left).
Wings Museum is hosting a ‘Bomber Boys’ event in August where veterans will be on hand to chat, do signings and share their experiences. The museum is always keen to accept donations of wartime memorabilia, which will be displayed, cherished and honoured rather than being hidden away and forgotten about. The Museum is always looking for volunteers to help in any way with restoration or staffi ng duties. Ideally, they would love to fi nd large premises to store and work on restorations – planes are large objects to display and photographs need wall space to be seen. I think Eric would have been proud to know that his memories are being kept alive. Perhaps, with hindsight, we can adapt Churchill’s famous words to suggest that “never was so much owed to so many.”

One weekend this month, I’ll be working with a group of serving and former Royal Marines who will be trying to walk, or ‘yomp’ as they’d say, a distance of 166.4 kilometres in 36 hours along the South Downs Way. Their route will take them from Winchester to Eastbourne and they’ll have the great pleasure of meeting me up at Devil’s Dyke. I say pleasure because I’ll be helping to hand out food and drink. Obviously, I won’t be doing any of the actual ‘yomping’, simply passing out the ‘wets’ and offering uplifting if misleading advice like “well done lads – it’s nearly all downhill from here.” Of course, most of them are far too experienced to even think of falling for that one. They are undertaking this massive effort for an excellent RM charity and the clue is in the distance to be hiked: The Royal Marines were founded 350 years ago in 1664 and the trek is part of the birthday celebrations. How difficult will it be? Well, to fi nish in the target time, all you have to do is say to yourself: All I have to do is walk 3 miles in the next hour; anybody can do that. The trick is that you have to say it every hour for 36 hours, without stopping, uphill and downhill. I mention this worthy cause only to illustrate the sort of activity that is increasingly making this part of rural Sussex such a busy, energetic and fun place to live. No sooner will our ‘yompers’ have passed along their way, than they’ll be replaced by bikers, joggers, horse riders, paragliders… If the weather is fi ne, there will also be the more gentle and traditional sight of picnicking families. On my way back from checking the route, I was musing on all this happy activity when I found myself surrounded by a crowd of antique motorcyclists having a recreational day out. Actually, only the bikes were antique, many of the riders were not. They were, like everyone else it seemed, just enjoying their day and life in Sussex.

My early memories of the summer solstice are
all about the news coverage and the confusing pictured it painted year on year. Reports would show a gathering of druids at Stonehenge trying to perform some ancient ritual I did not understand. Nearby would be crowds of hippies and what later became known as New Age travellers, possibly trying to join in, as well as a few well-organised anarchists whose agenda was unclear. Opposing them would be the Wiltshire Constabulary, doing their best to let the druids do their thing at dawn while preventing anyone else from getting near the stones… I had no knowledge of what was behind the annual pilgrimage, and what is a solstice anyway? Fortunately, I am now much better informed. The solstice occurs when the tilt of the Earths’ axis is at its maximum of 23 degrees, away from the celestial equator. Looking up from the ground, it is the point in the year when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. In 2014, the solstice will occur on Saturday
is Pagan in origin. For the Pagans, the solstice marked the beginning of the end of summer and the arrival of the first harvest, which would be celebrated with feasting and jollity. The druids were the priestly class of the Celts; Druidism is an ancient Pagan religion based on the spiritual relationship between the people and the land. The most powerful druid deities are the forces of nature: earth, water and sky. There is a reverence for nature, the spirits of places and for life itself. The Pagans would light fires in honour of the sun and the life it brings to growing crops. In early Christian Britain, midsummer was celebrated with the festivals of St John’s Eve on 23rd June and St Peter’s Eve on 28th June. Bonfires would be lit on high ground to ward off evil spirits. Some would be constructed entirely of bones, giving us the term bonnefyre. Others would be constructed entirely of wood and called wakefyre, because the men would stay awake all night watching over them. In most of the country, these festivals petered out over time, but some are

Madness? 21st June, at exactly 11:51 British Summer Time. After the solstice, the Earth will start to tilt back towards its celestial equator. 21st June will also be the longest day of the year. In the lead up to the summer solstice, the days get longer; afterwards they get shorter. But on the solstice day, as Latin tells us, the sun (sol) stands still (sistere). There are two solstices each year, with the second occurring in December. The winter solstice coincides with the shortest day of the year when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky. Stonehenge was built in three stages during the Neolithic period, starting around 3,000 years ago, although the original reason for its construction remains open to debate. The stones are aligned, so at the dawn of the summer solstice the sun rises above the ‘Heel (meaning ‘sun’, derived from the Greek helios) Stone’ for a single time each year. It would signal the arrival of midsummer and the change of the season. In the UK, the association with midsummer

still celebrated with bonfires in parts of Cornwall and the Scottish Borders. These days, Stonehenge is maintained by English Heritage; as the solstice approaches again this year, they instigate a process of managed open access. There is a solstice car park, although the use of public transport is preferred. There are campsites nearby and the event is marshalled and managed with a festival atmosphere – complete with catering, toilets, recycling points and rubbish bins. Ceremony, celebration, tolerance and mutual peaceful respect are all encouraged, as everyone is welcome to greet the rising sun.
The solstice marks the beginning of the end of summer and the arrival of the first harvest , to be celebrated with feasting and jollity.

ditchling film society: the moo man Ditchling Village Hall, 18 Lewes Road, Ditchling BN6 8TT
Directors: Andy Heathcote, Heike Bachelier. UK 2012. 97 mins. A remarkable documentary about Steve Hook, a maverick farmer running a small family dairy farm in East Sussex. Turning his back on cost cutting practices, Hook sells his unpasteurised milk via farmers’ markets and doorstep deliveries instead of supermarkets, as the latter are not prepared to pay the going rate. Apart from being a fascinating insight into the way in which the agricultural world works, it is a particularly moving and satisfying portrait of a compassionate, decent man who loves his animals. Doors open at 7.30pm. Refreshments and parking. Guests and temporary members

ditchling film society: in the House (15) Village Hall, 18 Lewes Road, Ditchling
Francois Ozon, France 2012, 105 mins. A high school French teacher gets increasingly drawn into a precocious student’s story about his relationship with a friend’s family. The teacher’s eagerness to sharpen up his pupils’ writing tell us about his own stalled creativity, his petty prejudices and marriage to an art gallery manager, played beautifully by Kristin Scott Thomas. The stories play up to an unhealthy curiosity about the lives of others. Made by the same director as La Potiche, the film is a naughty, insightpacked provocation which never takes its seriousness too seriously. Doors open 7.30pm. Refreshments and parking. Guests and temporary members are welcome for a small charge.

McIndoe Memorial
busine ss to busine ss
The Mcindoe Memorial Steering group was formed in 2011 to turn the concept of a statue to east grinstead’s greatest adopted son, Sir Archibald Mcindoe, into reality. Three years of work are about to come to fruition.
for East Grinstead The statue should encourage visitors into town via our historic High Street and Sackville College will be a marvellous backdrop to what we believe will be
a nationally
recognised piece of art.
Why outside Sackville college? Why a statue? Initially, the idea behind a statue was to create another attraction for East Grinstead to help attract more visitors to the destination town – it was a commercial concept! It soon became apparent that Sir Archibald’s work in East Grinstead and the major part played by the people of the town was such an important story that the desire to create a lasting memorial became the driving force. The full sized clay (approx. 2.25m high) was completed by the sculptor Martin Jennings (www. martinjennings.com) early this January and moved to the foundry where it has been cast in bronze and prepared for installation. Planning permission to install the statue on public land to the south of Sackville College was granted later in January by Mid Sussex District Council. To ensure that the statue and its surrounding stone plinth are securely fi xed, a substantial concrete base was required. Holes were then drilled into the base and the rock below to accommodate steel rods protruding from the base of the statue.

SuS Se x Li v i ng June 2014
A number of possible locations within East Grinstead were initially considered for the statue but the public land outside Sackville College was fi nally selected as being most suitable, particularly as it is the town’s southern gateway. It is also on the route taken daily by Sir Archibald to the hospital. The statue should encourage visitors into town via our historic High Street and the College itself will be a marvellous backdrop to what we believe will be a nationally recognised piece of art. We are hoping that Monday 9th June will be nice and sunny because it is the big day – the day when the statue will be unveiled by HRH The Princess Royal! Following the unveiling, the statue will be given to the people of East Grinstead and cared for on their behalf by East Grinstead Town Council. For details about the Sir Archibald McIndoe Memorial Statue and to make a donation towards it, please visit www.mcindoememorial.com.

last WORD The
May seems to have gone by so quickly – there’s clearly truth in the old adage that time flies when (you’re busy and) having fun. First, some great news: Our Eggciting Easter Quiz was hugely popular and we’re delighted to announce our three winners: Barbara Evans wins a Sunday Lunch for two at The Fig Tree, Hurstpierpoint. Sue Newton gets a family ticket to the South of England Show, and James Steadman will receive two VIP tickets to Coro Nuovo and the Best of British Choral Concert in Haywards Heath. Congratulations to all three winners, well done to everyone who took part and a big thank you to the companies who donated the prizes. And in case you were stuck on a particular question, you can find all the answers right here on this page. Our very own Diane and Charlotte took their family and friends to the Spring Garden & Leisure Show at Ardingly at the beginning of May, with tickets kindly provided by Izzy of Natural PR. Needless to say, they absolutely loved their day out! Undoubtedly, the highlight of the month was Burgess Hill Means Business on 9th May – a great local networking event that has gone from strength to strength, thanks largely to the enormous amount of effort put in by Peter Liddell. Sussex Living has been one of the main event sponsors for some years now, and we always take a stand too. In addition to meeting lots of local businesses, we were lucky this year to win the raffle prize from St Peter & St James Hospice: a big cuddly teddy bear. Charlotte (pictured), in particular, could barely contain her excitement, and Ted now takes pride of place in the passenger seat of her car! Finally, we’re pleased to report that Mum is improving by the day; we look forward to flying out to Spain to see her again soon. And we may well bring back a very special someone... called Banksy! Wishing you all many long, sunny and happy days in June.

“If you found me near a busy Spanish road, what would you do with me?” No question. We named him Banksy and once the vet has given him the all clear, he’s coming home with us to Hurstpierpoint!

Dear Sussex Living… …On behalf of the Balcombe Village Craft, Gift & Local Produce Market, I’d like to say a big thank you to your magazine for all your help in advertising our bi-monthly events in your Diary Dates. 26th April was our first market this year, with the Royal British Legion being our charity. It was a such great success, with lots of people who came. It really was tremendous! Glenda Thomson Balcombe Village Market …Thank you to Sussex Living for your most generous sponsorship of the Burgess Hill Means Business exhibition last Friday. I hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did, and that you felt you got something out of it for your business. Thanks, too, for being so unerringly pleasant and helpful, and for helping to make occasions like that one such fun to take part in. I think we have a very good crowd of decent, sociable people involved, which seems to work well together, and long may this continue. Peter Liddell, Burgess Hill Business Parks Association …A friend passed me a copy of Sussex Living with an article on Pyecombe. A photograph attached to the article is of my great-grandfather, Charles Mitchell (1846-1941) at the anvil of Pyecombe forge and his two sons, Bill and Ernest, and not George Miller as the text implies. Bill and Ernest carried on the business together after their father died, and were certainly there in the 1940s. They were succeeded by Sean Black. The last time the family was at the forge, then a tearoom, was 2002 to celebrate the 90th birthday of Charles Mitchell’s youngest grandson, Ronald Hubbard. My father owned a Pyecombe hook, which we gave to the Sussex Archaeological Museum in Lewes, and a depiction of one can be seen in the murals painted by members of the Bloomsbury Group in Berwick church. The article was quite correct in saying gun barrels were used to make the hooks. Experiments were tried with brass from the Brighton engine works, but the metal was not suitable.
