Editor’s comment To say that the recent weather has been terrible would be a massive understatement. And while Sussex Living can’t do much about the seemingly relentless rain and wind, I really hope that the magazine can go some way to inject a welcome ray of spring sunshine into your life. Please enjoy our March issue with our compliments. Our main feature (pp. 6-12) this month focuses on a son of the Ditchling arts community: Edward Johnston, famous typographer and arguably the father of modern calligraphy, is probably best known for his iconic London Underground typeface. Ruth Lawrence went to the Edward Johnston Foundation in Wivelsfield Green, where Gerald Fleuss and Patricia Gidney were happy to share their knowledge. Our thanks to them both. The Sussex Kidney Trust was formed in 1967 by the Sussex Area of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies. An odd alliance, you might think, but one that has raised considerable funds to benefit kidney patients throughout the county. Read the full story on pages 55-56. This month’s Home & Garden section features floors (pp. 14-19). From fluffy

rugs to polished concrete, the choices available for your home are as broad as they’re long, and our handy guide might just be the thing to help you decide. St Mary’s in Bramber, near Steyning, is a beautiful, fully restored medieval house with magnificent gardens and a fascinating history. Read Paul Davis’ article on page 30-31and do go and visit in the spring, when St Mary’s House and Garden will be open to the public (check times!) – no doubt a glorious sight. We also take a closer look at Education this month (pp. 62-69), while Roger Linn investigates local opportunities for youngsters with the Army Cadet Force (pp. 39-40). Finally, a friendly reminder not to forget the flipping pancakes on 4th March, nor Mother’s Day on Sunday 30th.

E Man of l Edward Johnston

Several million people pass his work each day, yet most are probably unaware of his name:

edward Johnston, one of the most globally influential typographers and calligraphers of the 20th century.

Walk past any London Underground station and within the iconic red circle lie the unmistakeable white letters of the station name on a dark blue background. This typeface is Johnston’s most visible legacy, a timeless symbol of the city, designed during his years in Ditchling during World War I. In order to discover more about the unseen scribe of the Underground, I visited the Edward Johnston Foundation in Wivelsfield Green, where a world renowned research centre for calligraphy and the lettering arts has been established. Johnston could have inherited his strength of character from his remarkable grandparents. Priscilla Buxton and Andrew Johnston refused to marry until slavery was abolished and, thanks to the untiring campaigning by Priscilla’s father, Thomas Buxton, the Abolition Act of August 1st 1834 meant that they could finally tie the knot and start a family. Although Priscilla died many years before Edward Johnston was born, she may have unwittingly influenced his vocation: an entry in her teenage diary reads: “The three things I most wish for are to draw beautifully, to write beautifully… and to mend pens charmingly.” Edward’s father, Buxton Johnston, emigrated to South America to start a ranch. There he married Alice Douglas and Edward was born in 1872, inheriting his father’s unconventionality and his mother’s devotion to family. When Edward was almost three the family returned to England for good. As a child, he had recurrent dreams, one of which seems strangely prescient of his work for the Underground. He dreamed of leading a band of men across a limitless plain, the leader carrying a great disc on a pole. Could the ‘great disc’ symbolise the red circle of the stations and the ‘band of men’ be the followers who today carry on the values and traditions which he championed in his own work?

Pictured right: Edward Johnston in 1903. Letter R from the inscription at the base of the Trajan column in Rome c.112 AD.

Edward never attended school but was home educated and from an early age copied illuminations and words painstakingly onto parchment. He wrote and illuminated ‘The Magnificat’ for his Aunt Buxton, which was shown to a specialist who praised it, reassuring Edward that “it is worth ten shillings.” This must have been a turning point for the youngster – an entry into the adult world, a sense of worth and recognition. Edward lost the two most important women in his life before he turned 15: his sister Ada died aged just 14, followed by his mother only two years later. This could have explained his exceptional devotion to his wife Greta and their children – he flourished from the loving support of family life and their togetherness allowed him to achieve his finest work. Edward had begun to study and copy manuscripts at the British Museum. His talent was remarked upon by Harry Cowlishaw, whose work Edward had admired in ‘The Artist.’ Encouraged by Cowlishaw, Edward began to extend his calligraphy, an art that at the time was considered dead and forgotten. William Morris, father of the Arts and Crafts movement, had experimented with it but had many other strings

Cowlishaw, who was attempting to rediscover some of the lost techniques, was already a full-time architect but he introduced Edward to WR Lethaby, a distinguished architect and principal of the newly formed Central School of Arts and Crafts. After showing Lethaby examples of his work over a period of time, Edward was to be offered a life-changing opportunity: thinking of enrolling in a new ‘illuminating class’ at Central School, Edward was instead offered the post of tutor by Lethaby. This opened the door to his blossoming talent. Lethaby introduced him to Sydney Cockerell, an authority on ancient manuscripts and advised him to study the 10th century Winchester Psalter. Edward gained particular knowledge from the equally ancient Ramsey Psalter continued on next page

which helped form the basis of his Foundational Hand and he used his studies to inspire his pupils. Edward’s students felt themselves to be pioneers taking part in an exciting experiment. He told them they were explorers in an unknown country and although he was their leader, he felt as apprenticed as them. He sought to establish the craft rather than himself; a former pupil, Noel Rooke, remembered how “the clearness and vigour of his mind came as a shock and a delight.”

in 1906, Johnston published writing and illuminating, and lettering, the classic textbook on the subJect. Another early student was Eric Gill, destined for fame and notoriety. He later recorded of watching Edward write: “It was no mere dexterity that thus transported me; it was though a secret of heaven were being revealed.” Edward was soon offered a second teaching post at Camberwell School of Art and his reputation for perfectionism and utter dedication to his craft quickly grew. One unexpected pupil was an older man, T.J. Cobden-Sanderson of the Doves Bindery in Hammersmith who had plans to create the Doves Press. Edward was quickly captivated by the idea of starting up his own press. It was around this time that a visit to the North of England with relatives brought continued on next page

Greta Grieg into his life – after just half a dozen meetings they became engaged and later married, remaining soulmates until Greta’s death in 1936. 1901 saw Edward begin teaching at the Royal College of Art; his classes proved so popular that numbers kept increasing. One of his best students, Anna Simons, was eventually to disseminate his teaching throughout Germany where it gained an enormous following. Five years later, Edward finally published a book that has remained in print ever since. Writing and Illuminating, and Lettering was to become the classic textbook on the subject. I managed to find a dishevelled copy from the late 1940s. Running to over 400 pages and crammed with examples and illustrations, it’s a work that brought him international renown. The meticulous attention to even the tiniest detail combined with an unquestioning passion give the book a dense sense of gravitas that has stood the test of time. The birth of a third child led Edward and Greta to seek a house in the country. Eric Gill encouraged them to search out a property in Ditchling, where he had a house in the High Street. They eventually found a red brick villa on the outskirts of the village, embellished with the kind of Art Nouveau

so that when years later, the Monotype Corporation made virtually the same alphabet available under the name Gill Sans, Eric Gill made it clear that Edward Johnston and not himself had been the originator of the letter design. Edward continued to work for the Underground for nearly 20 years, designing a compressed form for use on buses to replace the virtually illegible alphabet in use. Edward remained in Ditchling for the rest of his life. After his beloved Greta died, he lived on for another eight years, finally resting beside her in Ditchling Churchyard under a headstone carved by Eric Gill’s first apprentice, Joseph Cribb. The Edward Johnston Foundation contains a huge archive of calligraphy, lettering and related disciplines influenced by his understanding of the use of the broad edged pen. Trustee Sumner Stone set up the font department at Adobe and carried type into the computer age. Courses are taught and there is an annual seminar, taking place this year in April, called Pen to Printer. Founders Gerald Fleuss and Patricia Gidney showed me beautiful, timeless examples of their own calligraphic work and that of others who continue to extend the resurrected craft of penmanship and illumination. A new floor covering can provide the finishing touch to your interior décor scheme. And when it comes to decision making,

you will be spoilt for choice.

Pick the perfect floor Forget the simple choice between carpet, wood or laminate - nowadays, choosing the best type of flooring to fit your home is a little like picking a colour from a paint chart. Despite the burgeoning number of available options, however, home decorators remain a relatively traditional bunch. One major flooring retailer recently discovered through a research study that 69% of consumers who invested in a new floor over the past year chose carpet, while 25% opted for laminate, leaving just a tiny percentage experimenting with other types of flooring. Whether you’re open to new trends or simply want to find a stylish twist on a traditional floor, our guide will help you weigh up the alternatives.

Practically perfect As many homeowners have discovered to their cost, choosing style above substance is a bad idea when it comes to flooring. You might love the appearance of that whitewashed Scandinavian wood floor – but imagine what it’s going to look like after several months of cavalier treatments from pets and kids. Similarly, stone seems endlessly stylish but can make a home feel several degrees colder during the winter months, unless you have underfloor heating. The two rooms that are most subject to practical considerations are the kitchen and bathroom. For these spaces, it’s vital to opt for a floor that is easily cleaned, won’t stain and can undergo both regular wettings and plenty of hard use without suffering ill consequences. Linoleum, once considered wildly unfashionable, is making a triumphant comeback in kitchens. It’s cheap, long lasting, comfortable to walk on and resistant to dirt, scratches and scuffs. It’s also surprisingly environmentally friendly, being made entirely from natural, biodegradable materials. Many homeowners opt for ceramic tiles, which are available in a similarly large range of designs and will last for the life of your home if well maintained. Not suitable for a subfloor that has structural movement (the tiles will crack!) and slippery when wet, ceramic tiles are nevertheless beautiful as well as practical. Combined with underfloor heating, they can be downright cosy!

If you’re after a warmer and slightly softer feel, you might want to give a thought to wood. Hardwood can bestow a warm and welcoming feel on a room and will withstand heavy traffic. It’s also reasonably easy – if time-consuming – to install yourself, and reclaimed floors can be very well priced. If you opt for wood in a kitchen or bathroom, do make sure to protect the floor from spillages with a polyurethane lacquer finish and remember that your lovely wood floor will need regular care and periodic re-sanding to remain at its best. continued on next page SuSSex Living March 2014

Easy living Outside the kitchen and bathroom, there is arguably far more scope to put your personal style stamp on a floor. Wood and linoleum can still provide the basis for an elegant living space, while stone – particularly limestone, slate and granite – really comes into its own with the addition of a snuggly rug. Carpet, of course, is an ever-popular option. It might be tricky to keep clean, but its insulative properties will bring down your heating bills and give an undeniably cosy feel to any room. If you decide to have carpet in your living space then give some thought to the choice between synthetic and natural materials. Synthetic is an old favourite, thanks to its high level of stain-resistance and the lower price, but wool carpets are increasingly fashionable. Far more durable and generally better quality than synthetic alternatives, wool is environmentally friendly and free from chemicals - making it an ideal material to lay in children’s bedrooms and other areas of the house where the kids spend a good deal of time. When it comes to considering the perfect carpet for your living space, don’t forget the underlay. Choosing a cheap foundation layer will shorten the life of your carpet as well as undermining your green credentials. Instead, listen to your carpet supplier who will always advise you to go for the best you can afford. Opt for an underlay made from recycled rubber and recycled carpet fibres, such as crumbwool.

When it comes to considering the perfect carpet for your living space,

Letting yourself be led by current interior design trends can be dangerous, and you may regret your choices sooner rather than later. That said, there’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from fashion. One trend that’s surely here to stay is natural fibre floor coverings. Materials such as seagrass, jute, sisal and coir are fantastic alternatives to traditional carpet, and their ‘shabby-chic’ look combined with minimal environmental impact reflects the ecoconscious zeitgeist. The trend for natural materials has also extended to kitchens and bathrooms. Cork – warm, springy, durable and watertight - is making a comeback, and bamboo is replacing wood and vinyl in many homes. But it isn’t just green considerations that are driving current flooring fashions. The industrial look is in, with workplace-style carpet tiles being favoured over traditional fitted carpets, and polished concrete floors giving stone a run for its money. Retro materials such as parquet are also enjoying a surge in popularity, and today’s obsession with bygone eras is reflected in a resurgence of textured brick, terracotta and reclaimed stone.

Unusual options such as glass tiles, rubber, coloured quartz and even leather are allowing homeowners to stand out from the crowd. Don’t be afraid to opt for bold colours. Rich red, chocolate brown and daring patterns, multicoloured stripes and even tartan aren’t just fashionable – they are also fantastic at disguising marks and wear. Twist pile, ribbed, woven and otherwise textured carpets can also add both style and interest to your flooring. While current fashion can provide a style guide, remember to go with your own tastes and gut instincts first and foremost. A good floor can last for the lifetime of your home – so be sure to make the right decision. www.sussexliving.com

The audition for the Ditchling Players Spring 2014 production was a great success and the director, Tom Dufty, has been able to cast all of the roles with the exception of one small part. So, it’s full steam ahead for everyone involved and we are pleased to welcome some new faces to the Players not only on the stage but also behind the scenes too. ‘The Chalk Garden’ by Enid Bagnold revolves around the eccentric Mrs St Maugham and her granddaughter who live in a country manor house in Sussex. The house has a garden with a difficult chalky soil and equally difficult to manage is the girl, a precocious liar who fabricates stories about her childhood. So Miss Madrigal, an enigmatic woman who has a secret past herself, is employed to look after the granddaughter. But what happens when the girl’s mother arrives and how will this effect the household? The production dates are the 14-17th May. Tickets for this production are £7 (Wednesday) and £8 (Thursday to Saturday) and will be available from Clifford Dann, High Street, Ditchling (01273 843344) from Monday 21st April. St Georges Millennium Garden is a quiet and tranquil place tucked away behind the Hassocks Road in Hurstpierpoint. Its footpath makes a most pleasant diversion away from the traffic-laden highway for those who wish to traverse on foot between the High Street and all places east. The Garden is a small part of what was originally the large and beautiful garden of St George’s House, which was sold for development in 2000. However, 1.7 acres was saved by donations from the public and The Millennium Garden Trust was formed. The area had been

untended for many years and had become a ‘wild garden’. The ongoing strategy of the Trust has been to maintain the ‘garden’ as a natural place where wildlife will thrive but with sufficient intervention to ensure that it is a safe and uplifting place to visit and walk through. To this aim, regular work is carried out by a small group of volunteers. If you with to help or find out more, please contact Sheila Mcneill on 01273 832756. This year’s Millennium Garden Grust AGM will take place on Wednesday 5th March, 7pm, at the Bowls Club Pavilion in South Avenue, Hurstpierpoint. It is followed by an illustrated talk by Ian Everest, with a 16mm cinefilm recording of a year in the life of a downland farm in the 1950s, concluding with drinks and nibbles. Admission is free. Dream ground for Sussex cricketers Sunshine and blue skies come and go, but, happily, Britain’s most popular summer sport continues to attract players and spectators of all ages. At the last count, in England alone, an amazing 15,000 amateur cricket clubs were listed. Some of these have sprung up in recent years, for the most part playing matches on local village greens and parkland. Others, like St. James’s Montefiore (SJM), go back as far as 1898, and have their own magnificent grounds in beautiful rural settings. A mere two minutes from Ditchling or Keymer, 10 minutes

from Brighton on the B2116, the two SJM cricket grounds are among the most splendid in the country – tranquil and secluded, hidden from the road by hedgerows, with the Sussex Downs as a backdrop. If a match is being played as you’re passing, you’re more than welcome to come in and watch, or stroll round, or enjoy a drink in our Clubhouse/Pavilion bar. The Club attracts members from all across East and West Sussex: at the last count there were over 200 playing and nonplaying members and five teams www.sussexliving.com

made up of men, women, girls and boys. Regular coaching is available for the youngsters. Nets are accessible throughout the week. Women’s cricket has flourished in recent years, and England players – Sarah Taylor, Holly Colvin, Arran Brindle – have all played at the ground in the last two years. At the last count, there were over 50 playing members. The First X1 are currently in Division Two of the Sussex League, the premier league in the county – which may sound daunting for anyone wishing to join and play for the Club, but no one who plays cricket, or wants to play cricket, should consider themselves unsuitable; new players are always in demand. With two grounds and five teams, the Club can accommodate male and female players of all standards, and help them to reach their full sporting potential. The best way to join, as a Playing or Non-playing Member,

is to come along on a Saturday afternoon, see the facilities and standard of play, absorb the friendly atmosphere and chat to one of the senior members of the Club. Take a look at our website too: www.stjamescricket. com. Sunshine or not, it could be the beginning of a thrilling and rewarding summer.

JOHN LLOYD

LEARN A NEW SKILL OR PLANNING A NEW CAREER. INTENSIVE COURSES IN:

Ardingly Choral Society Spring Concert Bach’s dramatic St John Passion will be presented in the impressive setting of Ardingly College Chapel on Passion Sunday 6th April at 7.30pm. It is 11 years since this extraordinary and most moving work has been performed there. With its concise and vivid outbursts and delicate chorales from the chorus, contrasting with the emotional arias of the soloists, this great work sums up the essential story of the Christian gospel and evokes the spirit of the coming Eastertide. The narrative will be taken by our evangelist Lawrence Olsworth-Peter (pictured left), who has had such a great start to his career as has our soprano Eloise Irving, both of whom are wellknown locally. The other soloists all live locally: Jane Haughton

(alto) and Andrew Sinclair (tenor) often sing for the Society and it is especially pleasing to mention the return of Bob Davies who will sing the vital part of Jesus while also undertaking the bass arias. The Society is enjoying working hard as always to give a powerful rendering of this most significant work of the Christian tradition. The Mid-Sussex Sinfonia with Richard Toms (organ continuo) will be providing the orchestral support, continuing a history built over many years. Tickets are £14 (concessions £12) and can be bought from Carousel Music and from Mrs Shirley Ventham (01273 831264).

Love shopping?

Love Lindfield

Made up of an eclectic mix of independent shops and small businesses Lindfield is a unique village with free parking where you can find that special little something. There is water work taking place in the village, but this is well away from the shopping area and has indirectly created an environment of calm and therefore, the perfect place to shop. The water work is taking place along upper High Street and Ardingly Road between All Saints Church and Park Lane but all car parks and shops are open as normal, just enter from the southern end of the High Street near Lindfield pond. Further information regarding South East Water’s work can be found at southeastwater.co.uk

Spend time weaving in and out of the small boutiques, toy shops and home stores along the tree-lined High Street before stopping off at one of the village’s tea rooms, restaurants or pubs for a drink and a bite to eat. If it’s a bit of pampering you’re after, there are a number of beauty and hair salons to choose from so you can properly prepare ahead of any special event. With buildings in the village dating back to the 14th Century and having won the Best Kept Village Award three times, there really is nowhere better to spend a day.

Wolstonbury Hill, which is mainly owned by the National Trust, commands a northerly outpost on the South Downs and lies within the South Downs National Park. Some seven years ago, a small group of enthusiasts – ‘Friends of Wolstonbury’ – were formed in conjunction with the National Trust to assist with conservation work. This group of volunteers meets two days each month and undertake a wide range of activities with the aim of improving the ecology of this chalk-land hill. Of principal interest is the preservation of the chalk grassland and in so doing maintain and improve the habitat for rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. The major activity throughout the winter months is the removal of small trees and scrub to halt the encroachment of woodland on the hill. In the spring and summer, the group organizes public walks around the hill with appropriate experts to show the diversity of bird life, wild flowers, butterflies, orchids and general

woodland management. If we have stimulated your interest, please come and visit our group on Wolstonbury Hill. Our working days and spring programme of walks are advertised at www.wolstonbury. com. If you would like to give us a helping hand, then the necessary tools and tea will be provided.

The Dublin Legends (formerly of The Dubliners) perform at the Martlets on Saturday 8th March. Continuing the tradition of the legendary Irish folk band, this show is fast selling out already and is certainly not an opportunity to miss as the band is unlikely to tour this way again. Other events include a showing of Amazing Grace on Monday 10th March at St Andrew’s Church. Amazing Grace is the story of Wilberforce’s campaign against the slave trade, a very relevant subject event today. Food has a high profile next year with a ‘Touch of Spice’ restaurant night at The Woolpack (Wednesday 12th March) and Fairtrade Pudding Night (Thursday 13th March). Between these two delights for foodies Sophi Tranchell MBE, the Managing Director of Divine Chocolate, will be delivering a keynote speech to an invited audience. Rock for Fairtrade on Friday 14th March is the final of The

One, a talent show for young bands and singers. Applications from across Mid Sussex have been received for this bands and singers competition which was relaunched in 2013. It is sure to be a great night with some excellent young bands and singers on show. The popular Festival Ceilidh returns with Festival band The Watch (staged in association with Meltdown English Ceilidhs) and there is an innovative dance production ‘Dance the World’ at the Martlets on Saturday 15th March. The Festival is brought to an end on Sunday 16th March at The King’s Church with Celtic, Classics & Cakes. This features virtuoso Celtic guitarist Tony McManus and members of the Burgess Hill Symphony Orchestra. Pods for piggies Sussex designer Matthew White has invented the piggypod, an innovative new hutch for guinea pigs.

xyxyxyyxyyyy yxyy yxy yxyy yyxy yxy

Fluffy, child-friendly and undeniably adorable, guinea pigs make the perfect family pet; there are now over a million of these cute little critters in the UK. They might be low-maintenance compared to, say, a dog or a pony, but guinea pigs (or ‘cavies’ as they are more properly known) still need plenty of love and attention as well as a cosy place to call home. That’s where the piggypod comes in. The brainchild of local product designer Matthew White, this colourful, tactile hutch was inspired by Matthew’s experience as a rabbit owner. He noticed that traditional wooden hutches were a nightmare to construct, difficult to clean and began to deteriorate within just a few months of use. “My wife and I had taken on my sister’s rabbit and found the wooden hutch we were using quickly began to look dirty and drab,” he explains. “At the time, I was working with a doubleskinned plastic that was incredibly robust. I realised that it could be used to make a great hutch, experimented with the idea a little, and finally put it into production.” One of the first hutches made with this innovative new technique was tested by a rabbit owner who also bred guinea pigs. She told Matt that its size, easy-to-clean design and cute appearance made it the ideal home for piggies – and so the piggypod was born. The new product has just emerged from a period of testing with rave reviews and is now available to buy online.

Easy to clip together and far more hygienic

than a traditional hutch, the piggypod makes life better for everyone.

Easy to clip together and far more hygienic than a traditional hutch, the piggypod makes life easier for both humans and piggies. Its curved shape has the ‘wow’ factor and also represents a more natural environment for guinea pigs. Two animals can fit comfortably in the hutch, which is incredibly robust, warm (thanks to that doubleskinned plastic) and uses galvanised metal parts for increased longevity. It’s a good idea to learn about keeping guinea pigs before making a purchase, and Matthew recommends visiting local rescue

centres Palace Piggie Rescue, Crawley or Pooh Piglet Guinea Pig Rescue, Haywards Heath. Customers Martin and Wendy have been using a piggypod since last September for their two guinea pigs, and they are thrilled. “The removable top and no-corners design makes it so easy to keep clean, and we’ve used it outdoors too. With the rain cover, it has proved to be up to the worst the winter has thrown at it. We wouldn’t switch back to the old hutch.”

by Paul E.H. Davis

Variously described by the author Sir Simon Jenkins as being “a shrine to medieval Sussex” and “eccentric and delightful” in his book England’s Thousand Best Houses, the real St Mary’s House and Garden does not disappoint. But it is far more extraordinary than that – the mere survival of St Mary’s is a story in itself. The Grade I listed house was built about 1470 and became a monastic inn catering for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. The house was named after the chapel of St Mary’s which stood on the Great Bridge of Bramber. The medieval house, as seen today, stands on the foundations of an older Knights Templar building of about 1150, built to be near the river – Bramber, now five miles from the coast, was then an inland port.

history

Unlike many historic houses in Sussex, St Mary’s has had numerous owners reflecting the changing times including the De Braose family, who arrived with the Norman invasion, William Waynflete (Bishop of Winchester and founder of Magdalen College, Oxford), and the Hon. Algernon and Gwendolen Bourke, who found literary immortality in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. But perhaps the two most significant years in St Mary’s 600 year history were 1944 and 1984. In the penultimate year of the World War II, Miss Dorothy Ellis saved the house from demolition by a local builder who wanted it for its timbers. She ran St Mary’s as a guest house and, some years later, opened it to the public. She had to sell the Victorian part of the building (created by the Bourkes in

the 1890s) – and much of the land – in order to maintain the original house. After a rocky post-war existence, the house and gardens were in a parlous state by the time they were put up for sale in 1984; in fact, St Mary’s was on the ‘at risk’ register. Peter Thorogood and Roger Linton, now owner and Curator respectively, ignoring all pessimistic opinions and the enormity of the task, committed themselves to saving St Mary’s. The house has now been sympathetically and beautifully conserved, and is no longer ‘at risk’. The result is a magical, timeless place, which is both peaceful and fascinating. The Painted Room – unique and decorated for the intended visit of Elizabeth I – is particularly breathtaking. Charles II

is also believed to have waited at St Mary’s on his way to Shoreham. The romantic setting of St Mary’s, just below the towering wall of Bramber Castle, is enhanced by its grounds that have been reclaimed and brought back to life. Apart from formal gardens, there is a rose garden, a descendent of the Boscobel oak, and even a secret, walled garden with pineapple pits. Wandering through the gardens in summer, the scent from the flowers, mingled with gentle birdsong, is both intoxicating and restorative, and offers a muchneeded break from our modern hectic lives. www.stmarysbramber.co.uk

Blooming Times March is the time to plant onions, new potatoes and broad beans.

There is much that can be done in the garden now but, beware – March is a fickle mistress. You may fall for her seductive charms on the first warm day of spring, but do not trust her contrary personality – sunshine today may herald snow tomorrow. Onions also have a reputation for fickleness. The novice gardener, staring at a crop of tiny onions, is puzzled. Why so small? They seemed to be growing so well? This outcome usually indicates they were planted too late – onions have a peculiar two-stage growing cycle you ignore at your peril. If you’ve never grown them before, those mesh bags containing miniature onions known as ‘sets’ are the easiest way to start. Plant them pointy end up with their ‘nose’ just visible above the soil, 15cms apart and in rows 30cms apart. Curious birds find them irresistible and will pull them out of the soil, so use netting or crisscrossed sticks as a deterrent. The first part of the cycle commences with the onions growing almost entirely from the top – the underground bulbous parts will hardly move at all. After about six weeks, the system is reversed. All leafy growth halts as the bulbs start into rapid growth. By the end of June, onions will be into their final ‘ripening’ stage and nothing will induce them to grow larger. Late-planted onions will always disappoint as they simply run out of time to complete the cycle, so get them planted now. New potatoes are always worth the effort. On a small plot they take up a lot of space, so try growing them in bags – recycled 80 litre size compost bags

32

SuSSex Living March 2014

Onions have a peculiar two-stage growing cycle you ignore at your peril. are ideal. Push a fork through the bottom of the bag to create plenty of drainage holes and roll the bag down to half-way. Fill the bag with approx 20cms of soil and bury a single tuber in the middle. Water regularly – they are thirsty crops. When the foliage reaches the top of the bag, gently add more soil, (known as ‘earthing-up’), and unfurl the bag a little more. Repeat the process several times until the bag is completely unrolled – you can expect a harvest from mid-June. Potatoes become green and poisonous if grown too close to the soil surface. Earthing-up helps prevent this and also increases the root system; the greater the roots, the greater the crop. Despite their succulent-looking foliage, broad beans are one of the hardiest of vegetables and can be planted now. Slugs adore them and will make short work of seedlings, so use a slug deterrent. Listen out for the weather forecast, check your greenhouse heater and keep protective fleece covers at hand. Remember, March is a diva in disguise … www.sussexliving.com

At this time of year, I begin to consider what might need doing in the garden come the spring. Not that I’m actually going to do it, of course, but it’s always nice to know if someone asks ‘How’s your garden coming along?’ and it helps me keep up with what my wife is doing outside. Normally, even in February I do have an outside space that passes for a garden. It has all the usual stuff like grass, flower beds, a tree, some bushes and a shed, but at the moment I look out on what appears to be a particularly arduous obstacle course. It’s like something you might build if you were in training for the ‘Iron Man’ cross-country event. Where once there was a lawn, there is now an expanse of greenish mud in which are marooned an interesting variety of garden and leisure equipment. The garden swing, which is so heavy it requires two strong men to move it, has under the pressure of continuing gales all winter been steadily waddling across the mud, leaving two tank-like tracks behind it. Currently, its passage is blocked by the apple tree, but I expect it will get blown round that in due course. An upside-down wheelbarrow, some chicken netting, an enormous plant pot, a garden seat and a large, complicated bird feeding station are distributed, apparently randomly, between the flower beds and across the swampy former lawn. It is a source of continuing interest to my neighbour who secretly wonders why the paraphernalia change their positions from time to time and why, frankly, I’m not just a bit tidier with my property. He doesn’t know about the dog. You see, if left to his own devices, Archie will run backwards and forwards over exactly the same path from the back door to the bottom fence until he has created a deep, never-to-be-repaired trench through what used to be the lawn. We try to prevent this by placing obstacles in his path; he makes a new track. We move the obstacles; he makes a new track. We move the... I think you get the picture. Maybe in some distant time when the sun shines again, I’ll get my garden back. Meanwhile, I have a dog who could win prizes for agility. www.sussexliving.com

The Army Cadet Force is a national voluntary, uniformed youth organisation sponsored by the army, but not part of the army. Its stated aims are to inspire young people to achieve success in life and develop in them the qualities of good citizens.

Army Cadet Force

Service with a big smile Originally founded as a training organisation alongside the nascent Territorial Army, the Army Cadet Force (ACF) today has much wider scope. Life skills and community service are important aspects of cadet training, alongside the essential military requirements of drill, fieldcraft, turnout and selfdiscipline. And, nowadays, around a third of the cadets are girls. Although the ACF provides an excellent starting point for young people who want to join the Armed Services, supplying a steady stream of recruits for the army now seems much less important than turning out self-confident, capable and responsible young men and women. Colonel Anthony Lamb is the outgoing Commandant of Sussex ACF. A distinguished

Territorial soldier, he has been their leader for the past three years and is very proud of his cadets and passionate about the role the ACF plays in the community. He told me, “when you read about riots and where youth is going wrong and all that, you could think this young generation is pretty poor, and yet we think our young people are a huge untapped resource. When you see how enthusiastically and quickly the kids respond to the positive challenges and experiences we offer them, you’d be amazed.” It was to be a recurring theme with everybody I spoke to. When I asked Sergeant Instructor Mark Golding of the Hurstpierpoint detachment what he most enjoyed about teaching his cadets, he said: “I like continued on next page S u ss e x L i v i n g March 2014

teaching them the big skills they’ll need in life. I get a lot of pleasure from seeing the difference in some of them, between joining as young potential tearaways and leaving as young adults with good leadership potential.” Cadets of both sexes, of all abilities and backgrounds can join from as young as 12 and stay in the ACF until they are 18, after which some of them will go on to train as volunteer instructors and progress upwards through the ACF rank structure. During their time in the Cadets, they have the opportunity to take part in a huge range of exciting, challenging and fun activities as well as making some lifelong friends. In fact, a very large percentage of new joiners give ‘making friends’ as the main reason they joined. Unsurprisingly, 73% of cadets talk about Adventurous Training such as abseiling, canoeing, caving and climbing as one of the activities they enjoy most. Of course, all of these activities are delivered alongside the more ordinary but no less important aspects of life in a disciplined and uniformed organisation, where drill, turnout, self-discipline and the value of teamwork are highly valued. This combination of military activities with citizenship training offers the cadets a unique opportunity for personal development. Their community involvement project fits in well with the Duke of Edinburgh Award’s service section, and many cadets undertake this nationwide scheme. Nationally, there are around 46,000 cadets in the ACF, 1,200 of whom are in the 27 Sussex detachments, including those in Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and Hurstpierpoint.

Top left: Colonel Anthony Lamb talking to cadets. Top right: ‘Camming up’ in preparation for a night exercise.

Talking to Sergeant Major Instructor Peter Bateup, the detachment’s commander at Hurstpierpoint, I discovered he had been a cadet in Hurstpierpoint in 1968, before going on to serve for 13 years in the army. When he rejoined civilian life, he became a Cadet volunteer instructor and has been giving his time and energy to the cause for 28 years now. When I asked if it was necessary for adult volunteers to have a military background, he replied: “No, we have volunteers from every walk of life. All they need is to be reasonably fit, keen to learn and like working with kids. We provide all the training. They’ll need to be committed, of course,” he went on, “because with two parade evenings a week, it is quite time demanding. But it’s tremendously rewarding, even if sometimes I’m not sure if I’m an agony aunt or an instructor,” he laughed. I reassured the Sergeant Major that he looked nothing like an agony aunt.

Life skills and community service are important aspects of cadet training Left: Senior cadets on final parade, saluting the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex.

The highlight of the cadets’ year is always the annual camp where they have the opportunity to try adventurous and challenging activities, as well as pursuing military training in the company of cadets from all over the county. Living outdoors, skill at arms, and learning small unit tactics whilst generally getting wet and muddy, are all part of annual camp, which takes place for one or two weeks during school holidays. As important as the training is, the instructors will tell you that the bonds of comradeship formed at camp are equally valuable and appreciated by the cadets – boys and girls alike. It is a time when many lifelong friendships are forged; when some young men and women discover their natural potential as leaders; when laughter is the most common sound around and when the cadets gain immeasurably in self-confidence.

Mid Sussex

Marathon The Mid Sussex Marathon returns on

3, 4 and 5 May 2014

and event organisers are encouraging runners to consider collecting sponsorship for a local charity.

Many charities rely on the goodwill and generosity of the local community to fund their services and the Mid Sussex Marathon represents an excellent opportunity for runners to raise some money for a good cause. 17-year-old Thomas Chitty from Burgess Hill took part in the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend last year. Tom’s Great Nan, Muriel Richens, sadly passed away last year and the excellent care she received from St Peter & St James Hospice inspired him to run on behalf of the charity. “Local charities like St Peter & St James rely on donations and are in desperate need of our support, so if we can help them by collecting some sponsorship money then I think we should,” said Tom. “Last year’s Marathon Weekend was the first time I had taken part in an organised run and I didn’t think there was any point in doing it unless it was for charity – otherwise you may as well just go for a run in the park. “I ran with my mate Kieran Buxton and I would definitely recommend the Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend to other first timers. It’s a real challenge but, because the races are different distances and you can pick which one to take part in, you know you can make it round.” Tom completed the 10-kilometre Burgess Hill leg of the Mid Sussex Marathon in 54 minutes 30 seconds and raised £235 for St Peter & St James Hospice. “We are so grateful for the fantastic support from fundraisers like Thomas who make all the difference to St Peter & St James,” said Sue Adams, Director of

42

Fundraising and Marketing at St Peter & St James Hospice. “This year alone we need to raise £2.2m due to the increasing need from our community for the services that the Hospice offers. Without this type of support, we simply could not continue to provide it all.” The Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend starts in East Grinstead with a 10-mile race on Saturday 3 May, moves to Haywards Heath for another 10-mile race on Sunday 4 May and finishes with a 10km race in Burgess Hill on Monday 5 May. Together, these three races combine to add up to the classic marathon distance of 26.2 miles. There’s also an opportunity for individuals to take on the Mid Sussex Mile, a shorter event that will be run before the start of each race.

The way to a mum’s heart There can be few things in life as rewarding as being a mother.

M-O-T-h-e-r ‘M’ is for the million things she gave me, ‘O’ means only that she’s growing old, ‘T’ is for the tears she shed to save me, ‘H’ is for her heart of purest gold; ‘E’ is for her eyes, with love-light shining, ‘R’ means right, and right she’ll always be, Put them all together, they spell ‘MOTHER’, A word that means the world to me. by Howard Johnson

SuSSex Living March 2014

While it’s wonderful being a mum, it can also be overwhelming, energy depleting and unrelenting hard work – which is why celebrating Mother’s Day is such a big deal. Obviously, mums all over the world should be appreciated on a daily basis for all the love and care they willingly give every day – but it’s nice to have a special ‘Thank You’ day to make a big fuss all the same. So make sure you remember the day in whatever way works best for you: send a thoughtful card, give her a beautiful bouquet of flowers, call her on the phone or, better still, pay her a visit. With mums, it’s always the thought that counts. If you want to go one better, how about preparing a special meal? Breakfast in bed is the time-honoured tradition, and you don’t need to be masterchef to pull this one off with aplomb. Hot buttered croissants or scrambled eggs on toast or yogurt & fruit salad, served with a cuppa and a smile – how hard can it be?! Of course, if food is your thing, don’t hold back: spoil your mum with a full-on brunch, Sunday Roast, Afternoon Tea, or bake her a special cake. Just so long as it’s relaxing for her (and not too stressful for you), your efforts are bound to be appreciated. I have yet to meet a mum who is not always busy –

MIRROR MIRROR MIRROR on the wall... so help her! Whether you offer your services for the whole day or give her a voucher for a specific job that needs doing (oven cleaning, anyone?) or – shock horror – promise to give her more regular support throughout the year, she will love you for it. Mother’s Day should be all about her receiving your love, and not as a matter of course but as an extra-special effort – so feel free to push the boat out.

With mums, it’s always the thought that counts. There are a hundred ways you can make an effort. From home-made gifts and in-house entertainment to expensive lunches and luxury spa days, from family get-togethers to West End tickets, day trips or designer presents – whatever you think she might enjoy most will be the right thing to do. Bear all this in mind and you can’t go far wrong. One last thing: Give her a big hug and tell her that you love her. That should do it. www.sussexliving.com

We can achieve this by suggesting clever and creative options in terms of both cut and colour,” explains salon owner, Katy Jenkins. Changing your hair colour, whether a subtle enhancement or a fashionable new look, is an easy and non-invasive way to enhance and improve your appearance and essensuals is excited to be part of a new global initiative to partner with REDKEN

hair colour. “REDKEN colour products are fantastic,” says Katy. “They colour beautifully and do not fade as rapidly as some products, so our clients can go for longer before having to refresh their colour. REDKEN products are ammonia-free and the conditioning benefits are incredible!” Whether you want full coverage or high/lowlights to add depth, texture and volume, a professional colour application will leave you looking revitalised, glossy and more vibrant. Breast Reduction: The lighter side of life Haywards Heath Hospital Female breasts have long been associated with femininity, fertility and sexuality, which in our Western culture has led to a ‘the bigger, the better’ mentality. But for most women, the reality of living with large and heavy breasts is anything but fun and sexy.

T

he media has a tacky excitement with big breasts, but for many women they are a massive encumbrance, affecting their health and happiness. In terms of wellbeing, a breast reduction operation is one of the most life-changing and life-enhancing operations that you can do for someone, explains Nick Parkhouse, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Haywards Heath (pictured above). Many large-breasted women suffer from poor posture. Nick’s colleague, Ley Finlayson, Physiotherapy Manager, explains. “The sheer weight of the breasts pulls the woman forward, putting a strain on the neck and lower back and causing muscular pain. In addition, as many of these women are hugely self-conscious about their breasts, they develop a stoop in an attempt to conceal them.” When you factor in chafing and soreness, unwanted male attention and difficulty in exercising, it’s easy to understand the problems of living with large and heavy breasts. While many years ago, women had to put up with these problems, breast reduction surgery has now been a viable option for some time. However, with NHS budgets tightening, it is now very difficult to get a breast reduction operation on the NHS; most women will need to have the operation privately. Nick has worked at Nuffield Health Haywards Heath since 1994, where he has been performing breast reductions for 20 years. Patients can benefit from his extensive skill, experience and dedicated continuity of care. Patients also have access to top class physiotherapists, such as Ley, who can aid their recovery and rehabilitation. This is a marked contrast to the lack of before and after care of many cosmetic surgery clinics, and a good part of Nick’s work involves putting right the mistakes of others.

50

SuSSex Living March 2014

As breast reduction surgery is elective, patients can come forward in a variety of ways, either from a GP or physiotherapist referral, or simply via self-referral. “I see lots of patients through word of mouth, who simply ring the hospital and make an appointment to come and have a chat with me,” says Nick. So, what might you expect from an initial consultation? Nick will listen to your concerns, examine you, with a chaperone present, and make recommendations. He will explain the likely benefits together with the potential pitfalls and complications which can sometimes occur. Patients also need to be made aware that they will be left with permanent visible scarring, although everyone has a different rate of healing and, over time, many of these scars will diminish. There is also a loss of sensitivity of the nipple and breast feeding will no longer be possible after the operation. After the initial meeting, you take home a copy of the consultation notes to consider your options. If you decide to proceed, there’s a second consultation with Nick to prepare for the surgical procedure. During the actual operation, breast tissue is reduced and the nipples are lifted upwards using sculptural artistry. The nipples remain attached to the underlying tissue and are lifted upwards to a more normal position. A carefully pre-planned area of breast tissue and the overlying skin below the nipple is removed, followed by careful stitching with hidden dissolving sutures. A light adhesive tape dressing is then applied, covered by an elasticated support. All patients are given antibiotics to minimise the risk of infection. After a period of two weeks, the dressing is removed. Several post-operative follow-up appointments are scheduled as part of the treatment plan, at which Nick can give advice and address any concerns. www.sussexliving.com

Patients also benefit from a session with a physiotherapist, who can prescribe a series of exercises to help improve posture. Most women will be back driving within a week to 10 days and, on average, will be back at work within three weeks. “You can never have a physical issue without an emotional impact and this is a life-changing operation,” confides Ley. “A whole new world of exercise, swimming, shopping for clothes (which don’t have to disguise large breasts!) and improved self-confidence opens up for these women.” Nick agrees, explaining that most women walk back in at least an inch and a half taller. “As a plastic surgeon, it’s one of the most remarkable things you can do for someone. You’re getting rid of the pain, the chafing and the soreness. You’re getting rid of the encumbrance of heavy breasts and at the same time you’re giving them huge amounts of self-confidence. Everybody I’ve ever operated on has said they wish they had done it years ago,” he smiles. If you are interested in breast reduction surgery, Nuffield Health Haywards Heath has put together a fixed price package, of £5,499, subject to an initial consultation.

Word of mouth “Having a new denture can be as good as having a facelift,”

laughs Martin Ellis. And he should know as, together with his wife Janet, they run Crawley Down’s successful Denture Care Centre. Janet and Martin, a fully qualified Clinical Dental Technician, work alongside a dedicated team whose sole business is to fit and repair dentures. The company is committed to ongoing training and all the staff are highly knowledgeable, experienced and passionate about what they do. Well fitting dentures are an important part of day-to-day wellbeing for everyone, so the Denture Care team are pleased to offer their services to both private and NHS patients. Many people don’t realise that there is no need to qualify for NHS dentures, they are available to anybody who wants them and, for those who don’t pay for dental treatment, they are free of charge! There’s also no need to worry about a ‘mouthful of white tombstones’ as Janet explains: “You can now get a great set of teeth on the NHS in the right colour for you.” Clients always see the same team and, with the advantage of having both technicians and a dentist on site, the Denture Care Centre can offer a fast and seamless service with any repairs usually mended on the spot.

There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy your lovely smile with dentures. Without the pressures and formality of a conventional dentist’s surgery, the clinic enjoys a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The experience and level of expertise here means there is very little in the way of problems that the team haven’t seen before and client satisfaction is extremely high. Oral health is another passion they all share and yearly check-ups are recommended, even for those with no natural teeth, so any trouble signs, particularly oral cancers, can be detected early. With time to both listen and develop relationships with clients, the team are very proud of the fact that many new clients come through word of mouth.

Flower Power Kidney dialysis and flower arranging seem an unlikely combination. I discovered how artfully designed

blooms have raised over a million pounds for three renal units in Sussex hospitals.

Jenny Coxhead, Chairwoman of the Sussex Kidney Trust (pictured right), invited me to her home to reveal the story of how ladies across Sussex have raised money to save and enhance lives across the region. In 1967, the Sussex Area Flower Arranging Group (formed by members of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies or NAFAS) decided to form a charity to help fund a dialysis machine for the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. One of the founding members knew a surgeon in the renal unit and realised how necessary dialysis is to a patient waiting for a kidney transplant. Declared a charity a year later, the Sussex Kidney Trust is the only registered charity in NAFAS and has purchased £1,111,866 worth of equipment over the last 45 years. Dialysis can function for kidneys that have failed until they recover or it can help a patient for the rest of their lives or until a transplant is found. A patient typically uses a machine for three days a week while some people can use a home dialysis machine. Carers often feel they have to go through as much adjustment as the patient and they receive comprehensive training at the hospital to equip them to cope. A dialysis machine costs about £12,500 and the Trust also buys other essential equipment. They supply the renal units at NHS Trust hospitals in Brighton, Worthing and Bexhill. The renal unit at Brighton is the main provider for renal services in Sussex, with a catchment population of 1.2 million. The Sussex Kidney Trust bought £75,000 worth of equipment when it opened the new purpose-built unit at the Royal Sussex County in 2004, and there are now 40 beds and haemodialysis stations. The Trust is completely voluntary and raises funds through Flower Club events, demonstrations, coffee mornings and Flower Fesivals, as well as through

donations and legacies. There are around 50 clubs in Sussex with almost 2,000 members. Clubs are spread throughout the county, with regular meetings and an active social calendar. Speakers often give talks with slides, while flower arranging demonstrations are given by qualified demonstrators. In addition, there are qualified teachers and judges in the area for other events. Courses are a regular feature; there’s certainly no shortage of inspiration in NAFAS’ floral design magazine The Flower Arranger. Leafing through the pages of a recent copy, I found sculptural arrangements that would not look out of place in an art exhibition. Push aside any preconceived ideas about flower arranging from your youth – these displays are in a different league. There are competitions to enter, inspirational photo continued on next page S u ss e x L i v i n g March 2014

demonstrations and even a feature on costumes made entirely of leaves and moss! Arrangements can be used to decorate a home, given as gifts, sold or used to enhance a workspace or public place. With the availability of flowers from every region of the world, there is no need to be confined to local or seasonal blooms; the beauty of flower arranging is that combinations never seen together in nature are immediately possible. Desert flowers can twist among woodland branches and summer colours can enliven frosty winter backdrops to create strong visual statements for any occasion or setting. The Sussex area NAFAS has held Flower Festivals across the county. The first kidney machine was purchased from the proceeds of a festival at Arundel Castle. The Horsham Branch recently held a church festival in addition to their monthly meetings on the fourth Friday of every month. Formed in 1991, they take their name – the Forest Horsham Flower Club – from their meeting premises at the Forest School. The festivals are an important way of not only informing people about the work for the Sussex Kidney Trust, but also show what beautiful displays can be created by combining flowers with a bold imagination. After one exhibition, the Head of Brighton College wrote: “I cannot imagine a more beautiful exhibition,” and Jenny has albums of photos from past events confirming his comments. Patients are often unaware of who supplies equipment for their treatment; the Sussex Kidney Trust provides all the peripheral items in addition to expensive, life-enhancing dialysis machines. Comfy chairs are purchased for patients having treatment as are the all-important water softeners that are linked to every machine. Jenny mentioned that “people know where every penny goes as everything

is completely voluntary. Last year, our The expenses were just £78!” Joining one of the many local flower Sussex Kidney clubs couldn’t be easier and new can be certain of a warm Trust bought £75,000 members welcome. This year’s Sussex Kidney AGM will be held at the worth of equipment when Trust Henfield Hall on 2nd April, 2.15pm, by an inspiring talk. A it opened the new purpose- followed World Flower Arranging Show is held every three years; Dublin built renal unit in Brighton. will be the host for 2014 and many Sussex members will be attending. I can’t think of

many ways to combine a hobby with a means of raising money for a vitally needed service, but the Sussex Kidney Trust and the Sussex Area NAFAS seem to have succeeded beyond measure. Countless people have benefited from an extended or dramatically improved life due to their committed volunteering and many more will continue to do so far into the future. www.sussexareanafas.org.uk

Burgess Hill

Green Circle Walk This is an easy walk along tracks and field paths and uses parts of the green Circle network, recently upgraded to bridleway standard.

The Green Circle Network is a series of wildlife sites around Burgess Hill to which local residents are allowed access. The sites are connected by traffic-free routes, most of which are recognised public rights of way. From the car park at the entrance to the Burgess Hill Burial Ground off Jane Murray Way (A273), turn left along a signed path and walk in a southerly direction. At a path junction keep left and, at the subsequent path junction, bear left. At the next path junction, turn right and go over a stile by a large barn. Pass through the buildings of Maltings Farm, bearing right, then left to a pair of large gates. Follow the track ahead to a T-junction and turn right along a track to join Malthouse Lane. Turn left and walk downhill and, in 200 yards, go right over a stile. Keep right and follow a meandering path mostly through woodland to go over a stile and into a field. Follow along a righthand field edge and at the next stile, veer half-left across a field to go through a gate beside a barn with a house on your left. This takes you out to Danworth Lane.

60

SuSSex Living March 2014

Turn right along the lane for a few yards, then go left up some steps to a stile and into a field. Follow the obvious path ahead through two fields and out to Cuckfield Road. Cross this busy road and go over the stile opposite. Bear right to use a slightly raised path alongside the millrace connecting Hammond’s Mill, Ruckford Mill and Cobbs Mill. Go over a bridge crossing an attractive weir, then go immediately right over another bridge and cross the field half-left to a large tree by the buildings of Newhouse Farm. On reaching the buildings, turn right along a concrete road. Follow this access road which later becomes tarmacked to Pickhams Cottages. At Pickhams Cottages, turn squarely left and follow an unsurfaced track out to Pomper Lane. Turn right along this quiet lane and cross Cuckfield Road and stay on Pomper Lane to its junction with Danworth/High Hatch Lane. Turn left along High Hatch Lane and after approximately 200 yards look www.sussexliving.com

Make more

music!

education

Should you learn an instrument? When there are so many other demands on your (child’s) time, what are the benefits of a

musical education?

Music is more than a means of self-expression;

You might be surprised to hear that learning to play music, far from being just another extracurricular activity, is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself, or introduce your child to. As Plato put it, “music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” There’s no reason to disbelieve the great man, of course, but wouldn’t it be more convincing to consult someone a little more contemporary, an expert in the field? I spoke to Mike Wood BEM, Head of Music at Oakmeeds Community College in Burgess Hill and Musical Director of the Burgess Hill Choral Society and the Burgess Hill Symphony Orchestra, as well as a founding member of local band Wilbury Jam. “The benefits of learning a musical instrument are huge,” he enthused. “It teaches you so many valuable life skills – self-discipline, perseverance, time-management… for starters.” In terms of personal development, music can be a wonderful means of self-expression but it is more than that: music teaches the importance of delayed gratification. Just think of the sense of achievement

that comes from perfecting (or even performing!) a musical piece, and the resulting surge in self-esteem. Mike (pictured above left with the Burgess Hill musicians) went on to explain about the effects of music on intellectual development. “Many studies have been carried out to prove that a musical education improves memory, sharpens concentration, improves reading skills, builds better physical coordination and increases your IQ.” Indeed, research has shown that children who are actively involved in music or play an instrument do better at school. The calming and stress-busting qualities that come from playing music should not be underestimated either. A bit like meditation, playing an instrument can allow you to switch off from the daily grind and recharge your batteries as you literally lose yourself in the music. Socially too, there are benefits of making music in terms of sharing time and passion with likeminded people in bands, orchestras or choirs. In addition to the sheer pleasure this brings, it enhances team skills and widens our cultural horizons.

it teaches you so many valuable life skills.

Sadly, many schools are not able to focus on making musical education a top priority. Also, the instrument take-up rate among school children has inevitably suffered. So, how do you turn children on to learning an instrument? Mike seemed the perfect person to ask. His own musical education, largely self-taught and anything but traditional, is a story of love, grit and determination – all qualities that music can not only ignite but encourage to burn brightly too. Mike came to music relatively late. Discovering successively the accordion, guitar, recorder, violin and conducting, and many, many other instruments since, he explained how he gradually but inexorably “fell in love with music”. Perhaps it’s the fact that he was able to discover his passion for music without preconceived ideas, regular lessons or parental pressure that now gives him an

empathy and insight to see things from the learner’s point of view. His advice to instrumental students? “You need to find the right music to suit the person,” he smiled. “If you like the music, you’re more likely to keep playing.” In the end, it’s all about creating positive associations between music and the happiness it brings. Play for the sheer fun of it, but also know that the more you practise, the better you will sound and the more enjoyment you will derive from it. “Music was my first love…. and it will be my last,” John Miles crooned convincingly back in the 1970s. With a bit of application, we can all experience the benefits of how that must feel.

Languages: Tools for international communication Learning a foreign language – what’s the big deal?

From September 2014, learning a foreign

With English the most widely spoken language in the world, it has been easy to lapse into a false sense of complacency, where speaking loudly and gesticulating at foreigners was enough to communicate our needs. But in an increasingly competitive world, where business is now just as likely to be conducted in Arabic, Mandarin or Japanese, we need to sharpen up our linguistic skills if we’re to continue to make our voices heard on an international level. The Department of Education has recognised the importance of this and from September 2014, learning a foreign (or classical) language, will be compulsory at Key Stage 2 for all pupils aged 7 upwards. Hopefully, this will address the downward trend in students studying a language to GCSE level, which fell to 44% in 2010, down from 61% in 2005. What’s more, the introduction of the English Baccalaureate, which demands pupils achieve GCSEs in five key subjects, including a language, will be used when compiling school league tables, which is also expected to improve the situation.

In the modern world, learning a foreign language is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Many degree courses and MBA programmes demand at least one other language and many UK students are missing out on the Erasmus scheme, which encourages study abroad as part of a degree course. French, German and Spanish students are three times more likely to take advantage of this opportunity than their British counterparts. In November 2013, the British Council published Languages For The Future, a report calling on policymakers to introduce a much wider range of languages into education, and warning that the UK risks losing out both economically and culturally in the international arena. They identified 10 languages as the most important to the UK over the next 20 years. These were Spanish, Arabic, French, Mandarin Chinese, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Japanese. Sadly, they concluded that the UK had ‘an alarming’ shortage of people able to speak any of these languages fluently, or even enough to hold a conversation.

your attempts at communicating show a respect to others and it builds trust more quickly. Years ago when I was learning French, we only really had the use of dictionaries, phrase books, cassette tapes and a few newspapers and magazines to help us. How times have changed; the learning resources fuelled by audiovisual, computer and internet advances – software, apps, Skype, YouTube etc – are just fantastic. And whether you prefer watching films in the original language, listen to radio stations abroad or take advantage of low-cost air travel, there has really never been an easier way to immerse yourself in your chosen language.

Communicating in another language shows respect to others; and it builds trust. continued from previous page

Thankfully, schools and colleges are only too aware of the problem. Alongside French, Spanish and German, many now offer the chance to learn Mandarin or Japanese. There is also a trend towards reintroducing classical languages, such as Latin and Greek, as it is believed that these can improve written and spoken English, helping pupils to understand and interpret difficult English words. Having studied A-Level French myself, I know that learning another language takes a lot of practice and hard work. Yet, all those hours memorising vocabulary, learning how to conjugate verbs and reading L’Express have been worth it in so many ways. Whether on a personal or business level, however well or badly you speak another language,

Being part of a loving family help children grow up feeling loved,

valued and nurtured.

Happy families

come in all shapes and sizes

Unfortunately, not all children have such a great start in life and there is a real need in West Sussex for adoptive parents, who can give these children the unconditional love, support and attention they need. There are many lingering myths about who can and can’t adopt, but the truth is there are very few barriers to adopting. As long as you are willing and able to make a lifelong commitment to raising a child, and you meet the relevant criteria, you may be able to adopt. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have been adopting children as individuals for many years, but it is only relatively recently that unmarried couples, including same sex couples, have been able to adopt on a joint basis. The West Sussex Adoption Team welcome applications from those in the LGBT community. Usually coming to adoption as a first choice, their love, energy and enthusiasm makes members of this community great adoptive parents. Martin and Ian have been the parents of two little boys for just over a year and they have enjoyed every minute of it. “They’re amazing and have become such lovely children,” Martin tells me. “But when we first started the adoption ball rolling about five years ago, we didn’t know

LGBT is not so unusual and people need not fear discrimination. any other gay parents who had adopted. One of our biggest concerns was how big a barrier our sexuality would be. We knew in theory that it shouldn’t be, but even if there was no deliberate prejudice, we thought we might encounter unconscious prejudice.” As it turned out, the adoption process was not as difficult as they had initially thought and Martin was full of praise for the support offered by their adoption workers. Thankfully, as the stigma around LGBT reduces, any issues that do arise are being dealt with. As social worker Amy Cook explains, “Things have moved on very quickly and, over the last five years as LGBT adoption is becoming more common, the whole process has really loosened up. It’s not so unusual and people need not fear discrimination.”

Martin’s main advice to prospective adopters would be to research as much as you can and talk to those who have been through the process. Your adoption agency should be able to put you in touch with others, and the New Family Social is a fantastic support network for gay and lesbian adopters looking for advice. “I’d definitely recommend adopting,” says Martin. “You can have so much love; it’s very powerful and there is nothing as rewarding as nurturing these two happy little boys.” If you are considering becoming adoptive parents, please get in touch. Food, glorious

food!

There aren’t a great many dishes that seem perfectly right at any meal. Bacon, sausages, eggs in various guises, and kedgeree. Just as appetising early, late, or for lunch.

Kedgeree (or occasionally, if you must, kitcherie, kitchari, kedgaree, kidgeree or kitchiri) is thought to have originated with an Indian rice and bean (or lentil) dish traced back to at least 1340. It’s widely believed that Kedgeree was brought to the UK in Victorian times by returning British colonials who had enjoyed it in India. Another very different view is that Kedgeree originated in Scotland, and was taken to India by Scottish troops during the British Raj, where it was adapted and adopted as part of Indian cuisine. The National Trust for Scotland’s book The Scottish Kitchen by Christopher Trotter (Lomond Books, Edinburgh, 1998) traces the origins of the Kedgeree recipe to books dating back to 1790. It’s one of many breakfast dishes that, in the days before refrigeration, converted yesterday’s leftovers into a hearty and appealing breakfast dish, of which Bubble & Squeak is probably the best known.

If you taught English as a foreign language, which I did for over 10 years, you’d become very familiar with English irregular verbs. One of these is to shrive (shrive, shrove, shriven), meaning ‘to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of confession and doing penance before the start of Lent’, on Ash Wednesday. In preparation for the 40-day Lent Fast, people would use up their fatty foods to at least start Lent well nourished with eggs, milk and butter. What can you make with eggs, milk and butter? Pancakes, of course. Shrove Tuesday was once known as a ‘half-holiday’ in Britain, starting at 11am with the ringing of a church bell. The tradition of pancake races on Shrove Tuesday is said to have originated in 1445 when a housewife from Olney in Buckinghamshire was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time. Then, when she heard the church bell ringing for the service, she raced out of her house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake. The pancake race remains a relatively common festive tradition in England even today. Participants with frying pans race through the streets tossing pancakes into the air and catching them in the pan while running. Foreign equivalents of our Pancake Day, though perhaps slightly more exuberant in their execution, are the carnivals in Rio de Janeiro and Venice or New Orleans’ Mardi Gras. Like the word shrove, the word carnival originated with the idea of using (or giving) up goodies, coming from either carne levare, (Latin, to remove meat) or carne vale (Latin, goodbye meat).

Lakeside House

Ecuras, Charente

Village le Chat. 142 Rue des Narcisses. 16220 Ecuras

£65,000 Also available for rent

Summary • Type: Lakeside house • Bedrooms: 2 • Bathrooms: 1

• Year Built: 1980 • Lot dimensions: 400 sq m • Floor area: 70 sq m

This lakeside house is situated in a private village between Angouleme and Limoges in the beautiful department of the Charente. Nestling in a shallow wooded valley, this village of about 200 dwellings has a lake central to its position. There are about 20 houses that border the lake and this is one of them. The house was refurbished in 2009 with upgraded electrics, a new quality kitchen, new lounge furniture, new bedroom furniture and heaters. All but one small window is double glazed. The ground floor is open plan with a lounge, diner and kitchen. Stairs lead up to the first floor where there are 2 bedrooms, a bathroom and a storage cupboard. The village itself has a reception centre, restaurant/bar, laundrette and shop. Other facilities include a large heated outdoor pool, a children’s pool (with attendants in the summer months), tennis, table tennis, mini golf, fishing and a football pitch. Fishing in the lake is available for owners, their friends and tenants of the property. There are many more activities locally, too numerous to mention. The village can look after the property for you if you wish, including interior cleaning, repairs, gardening and turnaround days if renting. This village is totally safe for children and pets, as the max. speed limit is 15kph/9mph. The public park areas are always kept neat and tidy. The house is located about 1hr from the Atlantic coastal town of Royan and 1 1/4hrs from the beautiful port of La Rochelle, being situated only 30 min east of Angouleme and 40 min west of Limoges, both with airports. Motorway links are within 20km of the property. The village has 2 entrance/exits and has its own unobtrusive security patrols. Peace of mind when you cannot be there is everything. This house is set in a plot of about 400 sq metres of easily managed garden in the most gorgeous setting. Tranquility and peace for only £65,000 ONO. This property is also available for rent. The Future of Business

Small businesses in Mid Sussex, having survived the economic downturn, are looking to grow. The good news is that they have an ally to help them do just that.

The Haywards Heath and District Business Association (HHDBA) has for years worked tirelessly, innovatively and successfully to support local businesses. Now, it has taken another step forward by organising its very first conference for senior managers and business owners. Called The Future of Business, the half-day conference will be held at Haywards Heath’s Clair Hall on Friday, 7th March from 8.30am until 1pm. Delegates will hear from business leaders how to boost sales and expand markets, even how to trade internationally. They will also get advice on how to protect their businesses and get the most out of their people. Maureen Scholefield, chair of the HHDBA, explained that she is delighted that the Association is in the position to offer this opportunity to its members. She said: “This conference will tackle issues that will help make sure individual businesses have an opportunity to grow in a sustainable way.” The reasons for holding the conference, she believes, are clear. “Our members are the community’s lifeblood,” she said. “They generate wealth and employment and their success encourages local investment. Indeed, with more than half of all private sector workers employed by small businesses, they are the engine room of the British economy. “I believe it is the role of the HHDBA to offer its members specifically, and business people generally, information, guidance and a bit of fun, especially as economic conditions improve.” Throughout the downturn, the HHDBA has supported its members by offering a range of opportunities designed to help them access advice on development, connect with local businesses and

84

SuSSex Living March 2014

learn from local experts, so that they are able to grow and prosper. “The conference will, I hope, encourage local businesses to plan and develop in a realistic and sustainable way,” Maureen said. “That’s the route to success.”

The conference will tackle issues that will help individual

businesses to grow in a sustainable way.

Maureen believes the overall message from the event to the business community is that, in the HHDBA, there is an organisation that will be there when you need it. “The HHDBA has a network of members with a vast range of skills, so should any member of the HHDBA need advice or guidance, there is likely to be another in a position to offer support. “The conference promises to be an enlightening experience,” said Maureen, “one that drains neither the wallet nor delegates’ patience!”

Dear Sussex Living… …I would like to thank the team at Sussex Living for the help and support they have provided me and my business with since our launch last year. They have shown real enthusiasm for my business and what we offer. Their flexibility and ability to adapt to a change of requirements is much appreciated! The quality and area distribution of the publication is ideal for connecting with my target audience too. The high quality articles make the publication not only enjoyable to read, but a valuable source of reference for our local area. I have received excellent feedback from clients with each issue, and look forward to receiving many more! Lena Touqan Wagging Tails, West Hoathly …V. impressed with @sussexliving magazine - their editorial, quality of production, happy advertisers. Enjoyed training the team #sussexhour Liz Barnes @EnvocaUK …I am getting new patients in from all over, as a result of the ‘dry eye’ article in Sussex Living! Vicki Macken Hassocks Eyecare Centre, Hassocks ...I have been really pleased with the response I had from my advert in January with Sussex Living and the enquiries are still coming in even now. Sonya explained the whole process very clearly and all I had to do was be there for the photographer and have an interview with the copywriter over a coffee - simple and easy Lisa Moore Fit For Moore, Haywards Heath ... Thank you for the ‘Old Folk Songs of Sussex’ article in your February edition. Thanks particularly for the great effort your team went to in producing an accurate account of our local heritage of traditional folk song collectors and singers. It’s a massive topic that covers the past 170 years, yet your article encapsulated it perfectly. Mak Norman English Folk Song Historian (amateur)

Exciting news this month: We have teamed up with Park Cameras of Burgess Hill for our first ever photo competition! The theme is ‘Springtime in Mid Sussex’ and we’re looking forward to a visual feast of your wonderful entries. Full details on how to take part can be found on page 22. Do look out for the winning pictures in our May issue. On 30th January, we went along to the Haywards Heath Town Team Update at the Birch Hotel – a very well attended and informative event about lots of business and community ventures in the town. A big thank you to Patrick Wall, General Manager at The Birch, for his hospitality and time. Sussex Living is always happy to help with extra publicity for local community events – please feel free to email us with details, so we can put them on our website www.sussexliving.com. The website is also the place to get your FREE tickets to the Luxury Wedding Fayre at Ashdown Hotel & Country Club on 23rd March. And, of course, check out our cuddly Dog and Cat of the week, courtesy of the Dogs Trust (Shoreham) and Cats Protection (Chelwood Gate). Back in the office, we say a fond farewell to Margarita, our Assistant Graphic Designer, who has moved to a full-time job in Brighton. We wish her every success in her new post. You will be missed, Marga! As business owners ourselves, we are fully aware that many entrepreneurs have not had an easy time these past few years. It always amazes us just how much determination and positivity our local businesses have shown and we wish them all much commercial success in the months and years to come. Well done, everyone! Finally, as always, a big thank you goes to our advertisers and readers. Do please let us know how we’re doing – feedback is always appreciated.
