May is marathon time – Sussex Living Marathon Weekend time, to be precise. If you’re in Haywards Heath, East Grinstead or Burgess Hill between 4th6th May, do come and join in the action. It’s going to be a lot of fun for everyone, whether you’re a runner or spectator, and the weather can’t possibly be as unfriendly as last year, now can it? Also this month, we’ve got a feature on butterflies for you. Michael Blencowe is a local expert on these beautiful little creatures – it’s easy to see why they’re called ‘flying petals’ – and he tells us all about them and where you can find them in Mid Sussex, on pages 7-12. If you would like to contribute to the Sussex Butterfly project, you can help by recording your sightings in the local area. See www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk for details. Mick Botting caught the collecting bug early in life. He is now the proud owner of 120 old enamel advertising signs (including the stunning lightbulb advert on the left), which he displays all over his home in Haywards Heath. Ruth Lawrence went to see Mick’s private collection and talked to the man who has spent much of his life pursuing his passion for nostalgia (pages 61-64). Have you ever wondered where the Ansty cross comes from? Michael Pavey did – and he spent considerable time satisfying his curiosity, which took him to Cuckfield and beyond. Did he solve the mystery? Read pages 51-53 to find out. May is spring bank holiday time. After last year’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, we’re now back to having two long weekends in May. And what’s the best way to spend all that free time? Enjoying our homes and gardens, of course. Our Bank Holiday Projects feature (pages 15-22) may just give you some fresh ideas on how to make your living spaces even more homely. As always, we hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much as we enjoy producing it. Feedback is always hugely appreciated, so please drop us a line at editorial@sussexliving.com.

nothing sums up a Sussex summer more than watching our beautiful butterflies while they dance over the Downs, wander through our woods or circle us while we sunbathe in our gardens.

We’re very lucky here in Mid Sussex, as we are surrounded by some great countryside and, in this part of England, you don’t have to travel too far to find some fantastic butterfly habitats. The diversity of habitats here – woodlands, fields, heathland and downland – means you could encounter 40 different species of butterfly throughout the year. We all learnt the butterfly’s life cycle back in primary school – egg, caterpillar, pupa, adult. Different species of butterfly are at different life cycle stages at different times of the year, which means the Sussex butterfly calendar changes from month to month.

The first butterflies you’ll see in the early part of the year will be the ones which have spent the winter as adults hidden in garden sheds or tucked away under ivy and holly. In the early spring, you may have seen Small Tortoiseshells, Commas, Peacocks and Red Admirals, having awoken from their slumbers and visited your gardens to top up on nectar. For me, the first sign of spring is the stunning male Brimstone wandering through the countryside. This bright yellow butterfly is the granddaddy of them all – it stays in the adult stage of its life cycle continued on next page SuSSex Living May 2013

for up to 10 months (although, admittedly, it spends most of this time hibernating in the undergrowth through the winter). Despite snoozing through months of rain and snow, Brimstones always look perfect when they make their entrance in the spring – they must be made of tough stuff. Look out for them in May as you walk around Mid Sussex. This month, you’ll also see the male Orange Tip patrolling the roadsides. A white butterfly with, as its name suggests, distinctive orange tips on its wings. Orange Tips will lay their tiny rugby ball-shaped orange eggs on their favourite food plants (Cuckoo Flower and Garlic Mustard) and then, after a week or two of flying, they’ll die. These eggs will provide us with the Orange Tips we’ll see in the spring of 2014. As we head into the summer, the number of different butterfly species you can see in mid Sussex increases. Woodlands may not be ideal habitats for butterflies – they’re too shady and dark – but along open, sunny woodland paths in June and July, you may be lucky enough to encounter the two-tone White Admiral or the Silver-Washed Fritillary. The Fritillary is a large orange butterfly that gracefully glides along woodland rides and frequently stops to nectar on brambles. If you’re lucky, you’ll see their amazing display flight – the male frantically flying in loops around the female in order to impress his potential partner.

In July, it’s time to bow down to butterfly royalty: the Purple Emperor is about to ascend to the throne. For many, the Emperor is our most impressive species and we’re lucky to have this rare beauty living in woodland canopies around Mid Sussex. The male, resplendent in his iridescent purple wings, is our biggest butterfly. His female empress lacks the glamour but is still a stately, albeit understated, beauty. Considering the male Purple Emperor’s flashy robes, he is still notoriously hard to see. He chooses to spend almost all of his time high in the treetops where, if you’re lucky, you can observe him defending his territory and taking part in some amazing aerial combat with other butterflies. They’ve even been known to chase Sparrowhawks and Grey Herons! Yet, despite his upper-class breeding, His Imperial Majesty has some extraordinarily dirty habits and, in a quest for salts, will descend from the treetops and can be found with his curly proboscis stuck in all manner of foulsmelling muck. Dead animals, dog mess and sweaty feet are just some of the examples I have heard of. By Midsummer, the chalk Downlands come alive. Head to Wolstonbury Hill or Newtimber Hill to enjoy a daily Blues festival – complete with plenty of singing and drinking. Here, the grazed grassland provides ideal habitats for a wide diversity of plants including

Kidney Vetch, Horseshoe Vetch and Bird’s Foot Trefoil. The leaves of these flowers are on the menu for the caterpillars of the blue butterflies: Common Blue, Small Blue, Chalkhill Blue and, the most sought after of them all, the incredible Adonis Blue. Believe me – you’ve never really seen the colour blue until you’ve seen a male Adonis Blue opening its wings in the Sussex summer sunshine.

The Blues’ caterpillars have a very peculiar and intimate relationship with ants. The caterpillars provide the ants with a sugary secretion from their bodies and, amazingly, even ‘sing’ to the ants by vibrating an organ on the back of their head. In return for a drink and a song, they get a 24/7 security service from the ants. Should other insects try to attack, the caterpillar’s bodyguards will bravely defend them.

Of course, we don’t have to travel to woodland or downland to see butterflies. Our gardens are fantastic mini nature reserves and, if you’ve planted plenty of nectar-rich flowers, you’ll have the pleasure of watching butterflies dancing across your patio throughout the year. Most of these will be Sussex butterflies, but some will have migrated across the English Channel to put in an appearance on your Buddleia. continued on next page

The most famous migrant is the Painted Lady. Each year, it (she?) devises a plan for world domination from its headquarters 1344 miles away in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. In most years, the Ladies can’t muster enough troops and only a few trickle into Sussex, but in some years, a whole airborne army of Ladies heads north and descend on southern Europe to lay their eggs. Their offspring then continue the invasion and set their sights on England. In May 2009, millions of Painted Ladies flew in to Sussex and delighted us in gardens from Haywards Heath to Hickstead and from Wineham to Worth. Will 2013 be another ‘Painted Lady year’? Despite the great variety of butterflies found in Mid Sussex, many of these species are actually very rare. Many butterflies need precise conditions in order to survive and sadly, over the past decades, development and neglect have meant that these habitats and the butterflies they support have vanished from the Sussex countryside. Thanks to the work of the Sussex branch of Butterfly Conservation, some of our resident species have not only been saved from extinction in Sussex but are making a comeback. Important conservation work on our own nature reserves and with conservation partners and landowners is making a real difference to our butterflies and their habitats.

Sussex Butterfly Conservation is currently surveying butterflies across the county for the Sussex Butterfly Atlas project, producing an illustrated book with the results in 2016. If you’d like to help by recording butterflies in your garden or local area, please get in touch and receive a personalised recording form. You can send your sightings to www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk where you’ll also find details of guided butterfly walks in the area.

10 great

bank holiday projects Do you have a few hours, a day or the whole weekend to spend on improving your home and garden? We’ve put together some tips and ideas on how to max out that cosy feelgood vibe – after you’ve done the work, of course.

With two May bank holidays coming up, how about giving your home some extra TLC?

1. Plan your perfect home Long weekends are an ideal time to start planning more ambitious projects, such as extensions, conversions or major refurbishments. Take a close look and decide how your living and outdoor spaces could really work for you and your family. Make drawings, a list of your key objectives and set a realistic budget, then seek professional advice. Depending on the scope of the work, you may only need a plumber or electrician, then again an interior designer or an architect may be useful allies. continued on page 18

2. Brighten up a room A lick of paint can bring a room to life, whether with serene creams or a colour pop accent wall. Or think statement wallpaper to add interest and texture. Play with colours and textures – transforming the mood and ambience doesn’t need to be expensive and a feature wall may be all you need to add some fresh oomph.

3. create a picture gallery Group together small mirrors or pictures in interesting frames to create a wall display. It’s an easy way to add a personal touch to your home and show off your favourite fun times or family mementoes. Try local vintage shops or antique markets for quirky finds – it’s the eclectic mix of seemingly random groupings that makes this look work so well. If your style is more minimalist, you could try ready-made multiframes, widely available on the high street, to display your treasured photos. Hang your frames in a grid design, and lead the eye along transitional spaces, such as in the hallway or staircase.

Group together small mirrors or pictures in interesting frames 4. invest in a piece of art

Replace your prints and posters with real art. This may not be as expensive as you think, especially if you buy direct from the artist. Mid Sussex has many local art festivals, ‘open house’ events and weekend sales, where you will find unique, bespoke pieces that will enhance your home and only your home, creating a natural focal point of interest. continued over the page

5.Be creative with fabric It’s time to rediscover your sewing machine and make some soft furnishings – a fun and economical way to refresh any room. Start with an easy piece, such as cushion covers to update a chair, sofa or bed. Match the fabric to your existing décor or go bold with a contrast or clashing print, colour or texture for a real statement. If you’re feeling confident, how about making your own curtains? Choose a fabric you really love, and join a sewing class if you need extra help. If you’re not into doing it yourself, don’t despair. Find your favourite fabric and enlist the help of a local curtain maker or interiors specialist to make your vision for you.

6. Textiles to dye for Transform natural fibres (cotton is best) with inexpensive dye, available at any good hardware shop. Try towels – an easy way to update your bathroom colour scheme, which can make a real impact. Or dye bedlinen to achieve a fresh look without the expense of a new set. And vintage crochet throws look ultra chic when dyed a cool new shade. The possibilities are endless…

7. Green up your home House plants look lovely in any home, and they’ll help to improve air quality too. Perhaps add a fresh herb garden on the kitchen window sill. Parsley, rosemary, thyme, mint, chives will all live happily inside – both functional and attractive. Or add pot plants as a focal point in your living room, bedroom, anywhere you like. Whether you prefer sumptuous florals or leafy palms, your home will breathe easy.

8. add kerb appeal First impressions are all-important, so take a long look at the outside of your home. Perhaps the beds need digging over and might benefit from some new planting? How about an eyecatching hanging basket by the front door, or some well placed tubs. Take inspiration from one of the many local garden centres and specialist nurseries. And do ask them for advice; they know their stuff. Next, check your front door – could it do with a coat of paint? What about fences and gates? Paths and driveways may need pressure washing to revive them. Ultimately, you want to feel happy with how your home looks, from the moment you set eyes on the building!

10. Upcycle your furniture Transform an old or tired piece of furniture into something unique. You can pick up unloved pieces easily enough from local shops or fairs, if you don’t have anything suitable at home. Try painting or papering all or part of it, or how about special techniques to get that ‘antique’ look? Take a look around vintage shops to get ideas on how it’s done. You may want to take a course in furniture restoration to help with skills. Of course, if you’re not keen on rolling up your sleeves, there’s an easy solution: buy a ready-made piece and place it in your home – then sit back and admire!

9. Spruce up your shed Do you have an underloved shed? Clear it out, clean it up and paint it a funky colour! Not only will you have added another useable storage area (can one ever have enough storage?) but it will look great in the garden too. And while you’re outside, what about a summerhouse, arbour, pergola, play area for the kids... once you start thinking, there might be no stopping you!

Specialists in Household Linens Established 1935

As I write this, although we are now officially in British Summer Time, the view from the Downs is slightly obscured by falling snow and the outside temperature would only be regarded as normal in Spitsbergen. Luckily, I am not one of the hardy souls who have to work outside in all weathers, although the downside is that I am confronted on a daily basis with all the repair jobs that I’ve been ignoring all winter. Sadly, my track record as a handyman is not good. For me, the phrase ‘planned maintenance’ means I plan to employ a man who knows what he’s doing. There was the collapsible garden table that I built, which sank with all hands during its maiden lunch. A number of guests were trapped in the wreckage, but fortunately there were no serious casualties and the party was rescued by the judicious use of wood glue and nails. When I erected a set of wall cupboards, I started by dropping one of them on my foot, so Liz took the children away for 24 hours. When she returned, the cupboards were proudly in place, but on opening the doors, all the china inside immediately started to waddle forward as if making for the exit. She said it was an unnerving experience. The cat flap, which I attempted to cut into the back door, ended up big enough to accommodate a passing leopard, though my dog liked it, and my attempt to improve the drainage in the upstairs bathroom provided a welcome job for the emergency plumber. I am not alone in my ineptitude, however. I have an over-ambitious friend who tried to improve his TV reception by altering the position of his Sky dish. This meant clinging precariously to the roof, while he simultaneously fiddled with the dish and watched his telly through the downstairs window. When he had a perfect picture, he came down, put all his tools and ladder away and then discovered that his new picture was accompanied by sound – in Dutch. Come on the summer!

Spring Open Gardens We’ve handpicked three highly individual gardens that will be opening their gates to the public in aid of the National Gardens Scheme.

Stonehealed Farm Streat Lane, Streat, East Sussex BN6 8SA Open Days: Sunday 26 May and Sunday 16 June, 2-5pm Fiona and Lance Smith’s 17th-century house overlooks a garden that encompasses exceptional diversity of form and function while enjoying superb downland views. Areas nearest the house have a formal layout with relaxed unrestrained planting. Fiona readily admits that “I don’t like to look out on bare soil” and the brightest colours are to be found closest to the house. A ‘hot’ corner comprises reds, yellows and oranges contrasting with dark foliage while a series of ‘rooms’ lead the visitor across a curving natural pond into a lime walk and walnut grove, before resting under a hornbeam arbour. A winding staircase wrapped around an ancient oak leads to a high platform offering an owl’s eye view of the garden as it melts into the landscape beyond.

Legsheath Farm

Sparrow Hatch

nr Forest Row, East Sussex RH19 4JN Open Days: Sunday 19 May, 2-5.30pm Legsheath Farm has been in Michael Neal’s family for four generations. The 10-acre garden, with its sweeping views of Weirwood Reservoir, is home to some spectacular specimens. One of the first Davidia planted in this country towers over azure Himalayan poppies with their handsized flowers, while wild orchids wrestle for attention with the numerous species of meconopsis, helibores and cyclamen. A series of ponds and a stream-corralled island lead past a round folly before heading back past trees selected to reflect the diversity of the planet. Visitors inspired by the scale and variety of unusual specimens can purchase reasonably priced home-grown examples from a vast selection available on the day.

Cornwell’s Bank, nr Newick, East Sussex BN8 4RD Open Days: Wednesday 22 – Thursday 23 May, Wednesday 26 – Thursday 27 June, 2-5pm The garden at Tony and Jane Welfare’s brush tree with tiny, round deep-purple home is a plantswoman’s labour of leaves, and a Poncirus with huge spikes love – a third of an acre teeming with which are modified leaves. life that everyone can relate to and find Two ponds, a woodland walk, inspiration from. stream’, where it remains active for several hours. Early garden insecticides had a tendency to kill everything in sight, but there are now plenty of bee and hover fly-friendly products available. Some pests can be dealt with by using physical barriers. Copper wire wrapped around a flower pot really does seem to inhibit the progress of slugs and snails and, on the veg patch, a tent of horticultural fleece gives good protection from carrot fly, for these are the ‘nervous flyers’ of the insect world, reluctant to fly more than a couple of feet above the ground. Lily beetles are immune from just about everything, apart from the gardeners’ boot or a high pressure blast from a hosepipe. Would-be predatory birds ignore them; the beetle’s smart designer coat spells ‘red for danger’. Appearing in summer

Military historians are an argumentative lot, but one thing they all seem to agree on is the brilliance of Alexander the Great. A tough warrior and masterful tactician, he understood the value of knowing your enemy, and this attitude is essential when dealing with garden pests. Random spraying, using old chemicals found at the back of the shed, is a waste of time and potentially dangerous. Hold back and give birds and beneficial insects a chance. They are opportunistic feeders and will rush in to ‘clean up’, often before we notice the problem. However, sometimes a pest arrives in such numbers and the predators are clearly busy elsewhere, eating something more delicious, that we resort to spraying. Sprays can be a valuable weapon in the gardening arsenal, provided you carefully choose the right product for the right application. ‘Systemic’ products are designed to attack specific sap-sucking pests, such as greenfly and blackfly. The insecticide is absorbed into the plant’s ‘blood

as insignificant orange grubs, they spend winter underground, often burrowing into the soft earth of a patio pot, emerging as adult beetles in spring. They wreak havoc with all members of the lily family, including fritillaries, so check your plants regularly. Of course, what we regard as a pest is often breakfast for wildlife, and a healthy garden thrives on diversity. Feeding your soil with organic matter will produce robust plants that are less susceptible to pest and disease. After years away from home, Alexander’s army finally mutinied in India. After discussion with his generals, Alexander showed his pragmatic side, turned and headed north. You can’t win every battle. Or kill every greenfly. www.sussexliving.com

Never work with animals or small children – isn’t that what they say in show business? It applies to driving too. And while you can deal with children in the car fairly easily these days – strap them in securely, entertain them with toys or electronic gadgetry, drown out the sound of crying by turning up the hi-fi ... – animals are an altogether more challenging proposition. Have you ever driven off not realising that the family cat had snuck into the back seat or hatchback? Cats don’t travel well at the best of times, but the ensuing hoo-ha of finding Tiddles mid-journey is the sort of stress test I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Dogs, of course, are an entirely different matter, and many really enjoy their trips in the car. I know a number of tradesmen whose canine friends accompany them during working hours in the van, partly for company and partly as a useful tool guard. And when you see a passing car with a dog happily sticking its head out of a car window into the oncoming wind – doesn’t it make you break into a broad grin? But it’s the unpredictability of animals that is surely the hardest to handle. Take wildlife, for example. I vividly recall a blokey neighbour being in total shellshock the day after he’d hit a deer in the Ashdown Forest, writing off his van. Hitting half a ton at any speed is a huge impact, and as deer run out from the dark, avoiding them isn’t easy: there were more than 500 deer strikes in the Ashdown Forest last year. I recently narrowly missed a glorious bird of prey that dropped out of the sky to dine on some roadkill. The up-close look at this magnificent predator was a sight to behold, but my well-developed profanity reflex was also accompanied by a silent prayer of thanks that my brakes had only recently been serviced… All this to ram home an age-old point: You never know what’s round the corner. And as much as we can count ourselves lucky to be living in such a beautiful part of the UK, driving in Sussex, as elsewhere, requires a dollop of extra vigilance to ensure that all God’s creatures get a fair crack at longevity. www.sussexliving.com

Parkers MOT, Tyre and Service Centre enjoy a solid, unblemished local reputation. Here’s why.

MOTs and much more Owner Jonathan Barbara believes that complete transparency and straightforward honesty is the way to gain a customer’s trust. “We are totally truthful. If it doesn’t need doing, we won’t do it,” he told me before outlining the company’s very reasonable service price structure. At only £60 for an Inspection Service, to just £160 for a Full Standard Service, many customers have decided to have their car maintained or repaired at Parkers as a result of having their MOT done there. With offers and reductions for taxi drivers and a 10% discount for NHS workers, Jonathan (pictured right) also has the welfare of the larger community in mind. Elderly customers can have their car picked up from home, and workers can be driven to the train station or office while their car is being serviced. A Goodyear supplier, Parkers can fit these premium tyres at a very competitive price. Of course, they also stock budget tyres but, very often, the Goodyear tyres work out around the same cost. Parts including wipers, batteries and bulbs can either be purchased or ordered, and windscreens can be replaced for free if your insurer is one that Parkers work with.

The MOT side of the business includes free retests and reminders – there’s nothing worse than suddenly realising you have been driving without an MOT because the renewal date had slipped your mind. With advance booking, the test can be carried out while you wait, and customers are invited to watch their car being worked on. This openness is what has given Parkers the edge. I popped over to the business across the road for a glowing testimonial from one of their staff: “I’d recommend Parkers to anyone. They give good, friendly service; they’re all lovely and willing to go the extra mile.” With customer praise like that, it’s no wonder that Parkers have built up a loyal client base. “We’ve had customers who were told by another garage that they need new parts, and we’ve had a look and found there’s nothing that needs replacing,” said receptionist Hayley Bridgewater before adding, “nearly two thirds of local garages choose Parkers to carry out their MOTs.” With six MOT technicians, two qualified mechanics and an apprentice, customers can relax, safe in the knowledge that honesty and integrity are and always will be standard practice at Parkers.

Over the first weekend in June, Ditchling Morris will be hosts to traditional dance group ‘Les Polletais’ from Dieppe.

French visitors for Ditchling Morris Les Polletais aim to relive the past of the Dieppe fishing quarter known as Le Pollet by telling stories through dance about its fishing history and lifestyle. They wear the traditional costume of the fishing community, mainly from the 17th century, performing regularly in their home town of Dieppe and throughout the local region. Their style contrasts with the traditional Cotswold style of Ditchling Morris, who dance to live music using sticks or hankies with bells attached to their legs.

A weekend of French and English traditional dancing

Above: Les Polletais and Ditchling Morris in Dieppe 2010 Left: Ditchling Morris

Ditchling Morris visited Les Polletais in August 2007 and August 2010. Both groups danced in and around Dieppe where the locals enjoyed the two very different styles of dancing. Les Polletais have visited Sussex before, dancing with Ditchling Morris in November 2008. Ditchling were keen for Les Polletais to have the opportunity to visit places in Sussex of historical interest. As there are no windmills in Dieppe, it seemed appropriate to visit two of our very local and special landmarks. Oldland Mill in Keymer and Jill Mill in Clayton, both run entirely by volunteers, will be opened especially for this occasion, for which we are very grateful. We do hope that you are able to come to see the two groups performing. Ditchling Morris and Les Polletais will be dancing during the weekend of 1st and 2nd June, including at the following venues: Saturday 1 June, 14:00 Oldland Mill, Mill Lane, Keymer, Hassocks BN6 8ND No parking at the windmill, access on foot via Mill Lane, Keymer or Lodge Hill Lane, Ditchling Saturday 1 June, 15:00 Jill Windmill, Mill Lane, Clayton, Hassocks BN6 9PG www.ditchlingmorris.co.uk

LOCAL La Traviata Verdi’s opera La Traviata, based on Alexandre Dumas the Younger’s La Dame aux Camélias, is the story of a famous courtesan who gives up her hedonistic lifestyle for an ardent young suitor and then gives him up for the sake of his family’s honour. The lovers’ reconciliation in the final act will stir even the hardest of hearts. Heber Opera’s new production of this much-loved opera will be colourful and exciting, but the emphasis will be on the story and the characters at its heart, encouraging the audience to look beneath the superficial glamour of its setting. LOCAL Ditchling Players Rehearsals for the Ditchling Players spring production are moving at a good pace and things are taking shape, both on and off stage, for what will be another excellent effort. ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’, adapted by Mark Healy from the novel by Thomas Hardy, will be performed from 15-18 May. The Players are pleased to welcome a new director, Steve Thurley, for this production, as well as some new faces among the cast. There are also other breaks with our usual productions. We have a central aisle, so that the cast can move through the audience (don’t worry, no audience participation is planned), as well as live music from a local folk band. It will certainly be an exciting production and one not to be missed. As Steve

McIndoe Statue Sir Archibald McIndoe, the pioneering plastic surgeon and perhaps East Grinstead’s most famous adopted son, is to be commemorated with a bronze statue in the town. The design for the statue has been unveiled and a formal fundraising appeal has been launched. Sir Archibald, whose exceptional achievements in the treatment of badly burned Allied aircrew – famously called his ‘Guinea Pigs’ – led to worldwide

acclaim, lived and worked in East Grinstead from 1939 until his death, aged 59, in 1960. The project by the Blond McIndoe Research Foundation is in collaboration with the East Grinstead Business Association and East Grinstead Town Council, and has already received support from a number of organisations and individuals including: Mid Sussex District Council, Queen Victoria Hospital, the McIndoe Surgical Centre, the McIndoe family and local MP Nicholas Soames. The statue is being commissioned from renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings, whose statue of Sir John Betjeman at St Pancras station is now a celebrated London landmark. Indeed, Martin’s own father, Michael, was badly burned when a shell hit his tank in 1944, and he was treated by Sir Archibald in East Grinstead.

The cost of the statue is estimated to be around £170,000. A number of donations have already been received and any businesses or individuals who would like to make a contribution are warmly encouraged to do so, by visiting www.mcindoememorial.com.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Warninglid Young Wives entertained the local Over 60s Club at their annual Christmas Party, organising bingo and quiz nights, musical and carol evenings. In 1982, Young WIves Chairwoman Margaret Stoffel suggested they perform a short play as the Christmas entertainment. ‘Orange Blossom’ was chosen, a comedy made even funnier by Young Wives playing the male characters. This was so well received that they were asked to perform it again for the rest of the village the following week! As a result of this success and enthusiasm, in 1983 The Warninglid Players was founded

under its first Chairperson, Janet Cherry. We started with two oneact plays and, nearly 30 years later, we are still going strong. We take on challenges with new plays which are interspersed with classics and comedy. We are very proud of what we achieve with our set designs (for which we have won several awards) and the number of participating actors on such a small stage! We have even acted with talented pooches! New members are always welcome – and we do have a lot of fun! The support we receive from our audiences is tremendous and we hope this will continue as we go forward. Check the Diary Dates for details of our next production on 8-11 May.

Burgess Hill Bike Ride On Sunday 2nd June, The Burgess Hill Bike Ride will once again play host to hundreds of cyclists as they set off on a tour of the Sussex countryside in the name of charity. Organised by Burgess Hill Haywards Heath and District Round Table and Burgess Hill District Lions Club, with the main beneficiary being St Peter & St James Hospice & Continuing Care Centre, the event has raised almost £175,000 for local good causes since 2000. Steve Cronin, Chairman of the Burgess Hill Bike Ride Committee said: “The ride remains popular for a number of reasons; primarily,

I believe, because cyclists enjoy the way in which the event is organised. We welcome families, Sunday cyclists and the more experienced rider warming up for the London to Brighton Bike Ride. “All routes start and finish at Oakmeeds Community College and, this year, the 40-mile route goes west to Henfield with views of the South Downs. Then, riders head east through Hurstpierpoint, Ditchling and Plumpton before returning to Oakmeeds via St Peter & St James Hospice. Everything cyclists need to know about the Burgess Hill Bike Ride can be found at www. burgesshillbikeride.co.uk.

This picture: Warden Park Academy students with Headmaster Steve Johnson (left) and Tim French, Director at Solar Resources (right). Below: Solar PV roof installation.

is it worth putting solar panels on your premises’ roof? According to

Warden Park Academy, it’s the best decision they’ve made.

Lessons in

sun sense Colin Granlund, Business & Finance Director at Cuckfield’s Warden Park Academy, proudly showed me the school’s massive solar PV installation and reeled off some impressive numbers. “Since the system was installed in June 2012, we’ve generated over 31,000kW and received payment of over £5,000. In addition, we’ve saved around £2,500 on our electricity bill, giving a net gain for the 9 months of approximately £7,500.” For the future, Warden Park will be significantly protected from increased energy costs, meaning that any savings made can be ploughed back into the academy. The contract to deliver the whopping 50kWp Cuckfield system went to Sussex-based company Solar Resources – specialist installers of solar PV systems on commercial premises, agricultural, industrial and community buildings. With numerous successful business projects under their belt, they know that largescale installations are where the real savings are to be made. Project Manager Mark Marchant explained: “By using high quality components, Phono Solar panels and our careful system design, Solar Resources have been able to provide a photovoltaic system that exceeds the expectations of Warden Park Academy. Despite a terrible summer and long winter, the arrays are providing 25% more power than estimated.” With the business case taken care of and smiley faces all around, Warden Park has turned its attention to core teaching and learning objectives. As a result, real-time data on their own solar energy generation is now prominently displayed on a monitor in the dining hall for all to see. What’s more, the data has been incorporated into many areas of the curriculum, putting Warden Park’s solar energy initiative right

at the heart of education. “Students can see firsthand how solar panels are transforming sunlight to power and electricity, and we’re doing all we can to encourage them to become champions and future stewards of our environment,” Colin said. PV solar panel provider Phono Solar were also hugely supportive. “We believe that this type of project brings many advantages, especially from an educational aspect, to show and teach the young generation about the many benefits of green technologies,” said Mariana Hall. Of course, it’s not just school children who need to learn about of the importance of renewable energy; we can all play a part in creating a sustainable future. Large-scale solar PV installations may well provide part of the solution, while making good business sense. Solar Resources are fully MCS accredited, with an experienced professional team of surveyors, project managers and solar installers at their disposal. Owner Tim French is keen to build on the company’s success: “We are committed to delivering your project with great care and efficiency, from first contact through to completion. Your business couldn’t be in better hands to take advantage of the sun.”

Large-scale PV installations is where the

real savings are to be made.

Five-foot cake to kickstart third leg of Sussex Living Marathon

steve Ramsey:

On the

run Make a run for Mid Sussex

2013

The Martlets Shopping Centre is bringing its own slice of achievement to Burgess Hill in the form of a five-foot trainer-shaped cake to celebrate the Sussex Living Marathon weekend on 4-6 May. The ‘running shoe’ cake was commissioned by The Martlets to recharge exhausted runners after the gruelling race and to raise vital funds for charity. The shopping centre will reveal the cake on the last leg of the weekend (Monday 6th May), as the run comes home to Burgess Hill. Taking pride of place at the start and finish point by the Bandstand, well wishers and spectators will be able to guess the weight of the cake for only £1. A host of prizes will be up for grabs, with all proceeds going to charity. The cake will later be sliced for all participants to help refuel and celebrate their achievements. Ian Goodridge, The Martlets Shopping Centre Regional Manager, commented: “When we heard that the course was coming to Burgess Hill, we knew that we had to go that extra mile too! “The giant trainer cake is a big pat on the back for all those who have given up their bank holiday weekend to participate in a wonderful community event. What’s more, by running the cake competition, we’re able to give something back to charity.”

You know that line in ‘Girl’ by the Beatles: ‘Was she told when she was young that pain would lead to pleasure?’ Generally, painful things don’t lead to pleasure: stubbing your toe, smashing a concrete block against your forehead, listening to Slipknot, etc. But running is different. Runner’s high is real. And to get it properly, you do have to run till it hurts. In my case, till you’re hunched over, grimacing, going barely fast enough to overtake walkers, and at least one of your joints wants you to stop but you can’t stop because you’re nowhere near your house. Usually credited to endorphins, some research has linked the high to endocannabinoids, a type of chemical which works like marijuana. (Scientists have not yet found any connection between the runner’s high and an enthusiasm for Pink Floyd.) Even dogs get a high after exercise, though ferrets don’t. That was the conclusion of a 2012 study which put humans, dogs and ferrets on treadmills and measured the levels of endocannabinoids in their brain. The lead author, Dr David Raichlen, suggested ferrets didn’t get an evolutionary benefit from being good runners, as their hunting technique involved sneaking up on unsuspecting creatures. Humans and dogs did need better stamina, partly because our food was in the habit of running away. So, unlike ferrets, we have evolved to enjoy jogging. That seems to be the theory, anyway. It does explain why I got a big high from last year’s Sussex Living Marathon, even though I wasn’t chasing a tasty-looking woolly mammoth, but trying to keep up with Lee, our graphic designer. About a month ago, I rediscovered the runner’s high. I’ve been doing six-mile runs pretty regularly since then – and enjoying them! I even forced myself to do eight miles the other day. To make sure I didn’t bail out halfway, I left the house with no money, cards or phone, and ran four miles in pretty much a straight line. Only one way back… Yes, it was a stupid idea; yes, it hurt; and yes, I felt good afterwards. That’s how I went from dreading this year’s Sussex Living Marathon to looking forward to it. Bring it on! Steve will be running the Haywards Heath 10-mile race on Sunday 5th May. He’ll be wearing a Sussex Living T-Shirt and will run even faster if you cheer him on!

The weekend starts with a 10-mile race on Saturday 4th May at East Grinstead Sports Club, with extra activities laid on for all, starting with a junior 1-mile race before the main event. Richard Leman, a member of the British Olympic Association who was part of the Olympic Gold Medal winning hockey squad in 1988, will be starting the race. Race competitors will be able to take advantage of some great offers after the event in East Grinstead town centre. On Sunday 5th May, the event moves to Haywards Heath for the second 10-mile run of the weekend. Most of the extra activities for this race will be held in Victoria Park, where you’ll find a range of activities for all ages, for everyone to get involved in. There’ll be plenty of space for spectators to see the runners who will pass through the park on their way around the course. The final race, held on Monday 6th May in Burgess Hill, starts and finishes in the town centre, where most of the fun will be taking place around the bandstand on Church Walk. Cheer the runners on as they pass, or get into the marathon spirit by visiting some of the many local businesses offering special deals on the day! Each day, junior races start around 9.45am, with the main race starting at 10.30am, so there’ll be plenty to see and do throughout the Bank Holiday Weekend. See you there!

Happy

feet

To be honest, I’m not loving my feet at the moment. Hidden away in thick socks and winter boots for far too long, receiving only minimal maintenance purely to stay functional, they are not top of my list. But, with spring and summer round the corner, needs must. I’m using this opportunity to take a long look downwards and give my lowest extremities (over)due consideration. After all, they’re what I stand on, providing the foundations for the rest of my physical being. They do an admirable job carrying my

Our feet are literally the furthest thing from our mind – no wonder they get little attention. i think it’s high time we put feet first.

body weight from A to B every day, often under arduous conditions, with uncomfortable shoes or on towering heels. My feet are unsung heroes indeed. So if anything qualifies for some pampering attention, feet must surely be it. Luckily, a wide range of foot care and beauty treatments is on offer at pretty much all beauty salons, so there’s a real chance that, come summer, my feet may be fit for public viewing again. And it may well take that long. Because let’s be real: Gone are the days of innocence and youth when toes were naturally dainty and feet delectable and sweet. Success, as they say, is 90% preparation and, these days, this is likely to involve sanding on an industrial scale. I recently decided to invest in an electric nail file for some heavy-duty assistance – and an excellent purchase it turned out to be. If you’re less DIY-inclined, or just don’t fancy the task, I recommend going to see a chiropodist. The unglamorous end of the foot care profession, these specialists know what a healthy foot is supposed to look like, and they do so much more than treat calluses and sort out your ingrown toenails! Find a good one and book an appointment every couple of months or so – your feet will thank you every step of the way. Next comes the fun part. Foot bath, buff and polish? Massage and reflexology? Deluxe pedi with heated booties and/or chocolate paraffin wax dip for extra softness? Or how about the recent fish pedicure craze? There’s a treatment out there for every conceivable taste and requirement. Get yourself some foot pampering and feel your worries float away. Finally, top it all off with the nail colour of your choice and you’ll be ready to tiptoe through the tulips in strappy sandals, feeling polished and pretty again. www.sussexliving.com

Journey back to health Haywards Heath Hospital Nuffield Health Haywards Heath Hospital prides itself on high standards of patient care coupled with very high standards of customer care. Boasting 97% overall satisfaction rates, according to the March 2013 Patient Satisfaction Survey, the hospital (once known as ‘The Ashdown’) is now in its 20th year and is going from strength to strength.

A

s a leading healthcare charity, Nuffield Health has no shareholders and invests any financial surplus back into developing services in its hospitals and wellbeing centres. The team at Haywards Heath Hospital work closely with their consultants to employ modern techniques that reduce the complexity of operations and minimise length of stay, helping patients get back to health as quickly as possible. For any orthopaedic health issues, whether you’ve injured your ankle through sport, need a hip replacement, or want painful bunions removed, whether through private medical insurance or by paying for yourself, you can simply ask your GP to refer you to Nuffield. Some procedures are also available through the NHS Choose and Book service. The experienced consultants are all members of both the British Orthopaedic Association and the Royal College of Surgeons, and are all experts in their fields.

Mr Chris Williams Chris has an interest in hand, wrist and elbow surgery, especially joint replacement and nerve compression syndromes. He has been practising in orthopaedics for over 20 years and holds consulting positions at the Royal Sussex County and Princess Royal Hospitals, as well as at Nuffield Haywards Health and Brighton hospitals. Chris carries out procedures including those dealing with Tennis elbow, Trigger Finger and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

A common cause of wrist and hand pain is Carpal tunnel syndrome, which can happen at any age, and mostly to women. Symptoms can include pins and needles in your hand, pain, difficulty gripping, and aching that can extend up the arm. The syndrome is quickly diagnosed with a nerve conduction test, which can then be treated using splints, steroid injections or surgery under local anaesthetic.

Osteoarthritis or injury can cause the surfaces on the hip joint to wear away, making joints stiff and inflamed and causing pain. Treatment for Osteoarthritis includes pain relief medications, anti-inflammatories and short term use of steroids. Hip replacements are also successful at reducing pain by replacing the damaged hip with an artificial joint so it can move more smoothly.

Damage to the knee can be caused by injury or Osteoarthritis, meaning the lining of the joints wears away. A knee replacement will reduce pain, increase mobility and improve overall quality of life. A knee replacement removes the damaged knee joint and replaces it with a prosthesis made out of plastic and metal. Nuffield Health carried out nearly 4,000 knee replacements last year.

Mr Stephen Bendall Stephen Bendall was appointed as an Othopaedic Consultant in 1997 at the Princess Royal Hospital. Mr Bendall’s interests include all aspects of foot and ankle surgery. He is involved in training and research and has recently become an examiner for the Inter-Collegiate Board and is the Chairman of the BOFAS Education Committee.

The shoulder is the most flexible joint in the body, meaning injuries can happen easily. Symptoms of shoulder problems can include pain when reaching, lack of movement in the shoulder, a dull ache and weakness, making everyday activities like getting dressed difficult. Treatment can help, such as pain relief medication, physiotherapy and an arthroscopy (keyhole surgery).

“We will design a treatment plan with you, for you, to suit your lifestyle, so that you can get back to health as soon as possible.”

Mr David Ricketts David has over 25 years’ experience in orthopaedics, specialising in surgery of the shoulder, elbow and hand. He has a keen interest in research and has published a wealth of papers and case reports. David is a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee which supervises orthopaedic training across Britain and Ireland. Procedures undertaken by David include arthroscopic shoulder surgery, Osteoarthritis and Tendonitis.

Mr James Gibbs After completing his training as an orthopaedic surgeon, James has continued to practise a wide range of procedures, but is specialising in hip surgery. Procedures carried out by James include hip and knee replacement and repairing ligament injuries.

When we overwork muscles (especially ones that are not used to it!), we can get all sorts of aches and pains from a build-up of lactic acid to painful joints. Sadly, we seem to have lost the ‘art’ of making compresses and poultices to put on aching or inflamed limbs. Granted, they take a bit of time to make, but they’re a very effective form of treatment. Two of the best ones I know are cabbage and comfrey. Cabbage leaves make an excellent poultice as they are both soothing and cooling. Cabbage will draw toxins and heat (and even splinters!) from an infected area. I know nursing mothers who have successfully treated mastitis by putting a fresh Savoy cabbage leaf into the bra cup! Infused oils are perhaps easier to apply. Comfrey (Symphytum officinalis) is easy to make and a wonderful standby remedy for

Local herbalist Sarah Furey on how to soothe sore muscles and ease

aching joints.

Herbs for Health cabbage Poultice 1. Take enough fresh cabbage leaves to make a

the first-aid cabinet. It was called knitbone in ‘the old days’, and you can see why. I use it to treat arthritis, sore muscles, torn tendons and injured joints. Painful, aching, often arthritic joints are common in our cold, damp climate, but they can also be caused by a build-up of toxins in the body. Think of gout – the inability of the kidneys to convert and excrete uric acid, which then ends up as an extremely painful inflammation in our joints or connective tissue. Where there is an ongoing or chronic condition, I always look for the causes, and a toxic load is very common. So think of increasing your water intake and perhaps support the liver with pure milk thistle seed powder.

comfrey infused Oil 1. Chop 4 tablespoonfuls of fresh comfrey leaves into very small pieces.

2. Pour 250 ml of mild olive oil into a small saucepan or double burner and add the chopped leaves.

3. Heat gently until the comfrey has a crisp appearance. 4. Cool, strain and put into a sterilised, labelled bottle. The infused oil will be a beautiful dark green colour. It will last for a couple of years.

caUTiOn: always consult a qualified health care professional if you are unsure of any medical symptoms.

intrigued about the origin of the Ansty cross, Phil Pavey went off to do some research and found more than he

bargained for.

The Mystery of the Ansty Cross The hamlet of Ansty lies pretty well in the middle of Sussex, amongst the woods and farmland of the Weald. Until 2011, its most noticeable feature was its pub, the Ansty Cross, and in particular the pub’s very striking sign, showing a white cross on a black background. The cross had equal length arms, each ending in a three-pronged ‘fleur-de-lys, and was surrounded by a circle, so that it looked a bit like a Celtic cross. I was intrigued by this and wondered if it could be possible that Ansty had its own design of cross, like Canterbury or St Albans. However, unlike these towns, Ansty is obviously not a centre of pilgrimage, and I guessed it was more down to the pub’s position: although it lies on a T-junction of the eastwest A272 and a road going southwards to Burgess Hill, there is a small lane northwards a short way away, and the spot could arguably be referred to as a crossroads. The situation was complicated by the existence of a similar, but not identical, cross on the pub’s gable. The main difference was that it lacked a circle and (it later turned out significantly) was coloured green. So, when I was on a ramble in the area, I called in for a drink (please note: the Ansty Cross pub has now ceased trading) and asked the staff if anyone knew where either the cross design or the pub’s name came from, but nobody knew. I concluded that the crossroads explanation was the most likely, and that the cross designs were just chosen by chance to illustrate the word. On the other hand, the designs were similar and quite unusual,

and I felt pulled to dig some more. I learnt that Ansty was in the parish of Cuckfield, so while on another ramble, I visited the church to see if its guide made any reference. It did not, but I noticed that the church tower featured a metal cross, in fact a ‘wall tie plate’ to support the structure, of once again a similar but slightly different design. This cross had arms of equal length but only two prongs at the end of each arm. I was even more struck to notice that a building at the other end of the village, once a free church chapel, had two metal wall tie plates on its front wall of exactly the same design. It was beginning to get very confusing. Was there a Cuckfield cross similar to the Ansty one, were they variants from one origin, or was it all just coincidence? It occurred to me that the crosses could be heraldic rather than ecclesiastical, i.e. a motif drawn from a landed family’s coat of arms. The most likely candidates could be those who had owned estates throughout the county, like the Fitzalans, Howards, Nevills or Pelhams – or, judging from the memorials in the church, local ‘big fish’: the Burrell, Sergison, Hendley or Bowyer families. A search on the internet found the arms of all these families, but none of them featured crosses like the ones at Ansty or Cuckfield. On the other hand, it turned out that the cross on the pub gable in Ansty and the one in Cuckfield were indeed ones used in heraldry, known as a cross patonce and a cross moline.

Ansty is not a centre of pilgrimage, and I guessed the cross design was to do with the pub’s position at a crossroads .

By now, I was getting a bit obsessive! I was also planning a book on mysteries in the history of Sussex, and thought this might be one. So, I wrote to the pub manager in Ansty, but received no reply and soon after found the pub had closed down. I also wrote to the College of Arms in London asking if they could suggest who might have a cross patonce or moline in their coat of arms, but was told (in polite terms) that I was more or less asking them to look for a needle in a haystack. However, another email had gone to the vicar at Cuckfield, and the parish archivist there kindly replied that the Cuckfield crosses were essentially structural and probably just the personal design of a local blacksmith; though the Ansty cross – green as on the pub gable – came from a local coat of arms, possibly the Hendleys. Sadly, though, I knew from my earlier research that it wasn’t the Hendleys. I found a row of houses in Ansty called Green Cross cottages, which suggested that the cross was a sort of landlord’s emblem, and soon after the local history section of Brighton public library came to the rescue. A century-old book, History of the Parish of Cuckfield, said a green cross was the heraldic sign of the Hussey family, who served as Sussex MPs from 1289 to 1558, but seemed to have disappeared after 1621. ‘Armed’ with the name Hussey, I wrote again to the College of Arms and they kindly confirmed that a plain green cross on a gold background was used by several Hussey families, and may have become patonce just by ornamentation. By complete coincidence, I also came across the arms of the Ward family, once of Bolnore Manor near Cuckfield, whose arms featured a blue cross patonce. So, my best guess was that the Hussey

green cross had ‘morphed’ from plain to patonce, either just as elaboration or by some association or confusion with their neighbours, the Wards. Two more things happened: A village sign went up in 2011 showing the green cross patonce. The artist, when contacted via the Parish Council, said he too was informed that it came from the Husseys. Secondly, by another startling coincidence, when on a ramble at Amberley near Arundel, I saw the same metal cross on a cottage as at Cuckfield. So it couldn’t be by a local blacksmith, and could be from the arms of a family with widespread land holdings. However, I decided that was an even bigger quest and one that for my part could remain a mystery for many more years to come…

A green cross was the heraldic sign of the Hussey family, who served as Sussex MPs from 1289 to 1558.

Help for those who give their all s, For nearly 130 year SSAFA has been providing vital assistance to Armed Forces families. Talk ! about unsung heroes

Over the last few years, there has been a spectacular rise in the public’s awareness of the need to support the men and women of our Armed Forces and their dependants. The need, of course, was always there, but the current upsurge in public sympathy was stirred by events first in Iraq and then Afghanistan. It has resulted in the formation of at least one new charitable organisation in ‘Help For Heroes’, and in charity work connected with the Armed Forces gaining a much higher profile than ever before. But underneath all the publicity, the new-found enthusiasm and public generosity, the oldest Service charity dealing with those serving and retired, together with their families, in the country has been quietly getting on with the vital work it has been doing since the 19th century. That charity, held in great affection throughout our Armed Forces, is the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, more commonly called SSAFA. Originally set up to look after the families of the men who embarked with the ‘Second Egypt Expeditionary Force’ in 1885, SSAFA now provides financial, practical and emotional assistance to anyone currently serving, or who has ever served, in the Army, Navy or RAF, as well as their families. The range and extent of that help is truly awe-inspiring and beyond the scope of this short article but, for example, at one level, it includes ‘homes from home’ for families and friends of seriously injured service personnel, allowing them to stay close by their loved ones whilst they are treated at the military medical centres at Selly Oak, Birmingham and Headley Court, Surrey.

54

S u ss e x L i v i n g May 2013

One day’s service – a lifetime of SSAFA support At another level, SSAFA’s volunteer caseworkers try to help solve problems for veterans, their dependents and families, and as the criterion to be eligible for help is only one day’s service, that’s a lot of people. In Sussex alone, it is estimated that some 250,000 people are eligible, and currently there are around 80 SSAFA caseworkers in the county. They assess the applicants’ needs and then set about providing for them by drawing in assistance from the many benevolent and charitable organisations that exist in the UK. SSAFA’s highly trained caseworkers in Sussex deal with some 800 cases a year and, in that time, they will raise the necessary funds to provide assistance amounting to half a million pounds. The problems they face can be as simple as finding a new washing machine, or as complex as debt or homelessness. If you’d like to know more about SSAFA’s brilliant work, or find out about how you can help, in ways ranging from simple fundraising, to training as a caseworker, then please make contact. Your help will be very welcome. You can email SSAFA in Sussex at sussexsec@ssafa.me.uk www.ssafa.org.uk

Jack & Jill From the famous windmills at Clayton, head along the South Downs Way towards Ditchling Beacon and back via Lower Standean.

From the car park by Clayton Windmills, return to Mill Lane and turn left to follow a flint track uphill. Jack and Jill Windmills must surely be the best known landmark on the South Downs. Jill, nearest to the car park, is a post mill. It’s a little-known fact that Jill was moved to her present site from Brighton by a team of oxen in 1852! Jill is open to the public on most Sundays and Bank Holidays during the summer. Jack is a tower mill, built in 1866 to replace an earlier post mill. Jack is privately owned and urgently in need of repair. It is hoped that this can be achieved in conjunction with the current owner and the South Downs National Park Authority. At a fork in about 200 metres, keep left and follow the South Downs Way eastwards along the ridge for approximately 2 miles, almost as far as Ditchling Beacon. Ditchling Beacon is the third highest point on the South Downs at 248 metres (814 feet). On a clear day, the ridge of the North Downs can

be seen as well as Ashdown Forest. Immediately to the south are the environs of Brighton and, on a sunny day, the sea sparkles in the distance. Shortly before reaching the Beacon itself, turn right through a gate signed ‘Heathy Brow’ on a bridleway. The bridleway descends gradually, then more steeply (ignore a bridleway coming in from your left) to a gate at a junction of paths. Take

the right-hand path, following it as it curves down through North Bottom. Go through a way-marked gate, and continue beside the fence to walk down through this dry valley. Dry valleys are found in chalk and limestone country. As the rock is porous, water seeps through it instead of forming streams. Eventually, sidestep to your right over a stile, maintain direction and, at a path junction, take the right fork. The track climbs gently to begin with, then more steeply and bears to the right, to go through a pair of gates before descending to the farm track at Lower Standean. Turn right onto this track and follow it uphill past a barn to a pair of continued on next page

gates. Go through the gates and turn left, then right along a field edge to a junction of paths. At the path junction, turn right and follow an obvious path across a large field. At the next gate, continue ahead across open downland to join the South Downs Way a little to the west of Keymer Post. There are superb views to your left of Wolstonbury and Newtimber Hills, with the village of Pyecombe nestling snugly between them. To return to the start of the walk, turn left along the ridge for a little under a mile to the start of the walk.

1 red or green pepper, chopped and seeded 4 tomatoes, peeled and chopped 350g long grain rice 1.3l chicken stock 100g peas (frozen are fine) A little saffron and seasoning

1. Shell most of the mussels and peel most of the prawns (if using fresh), leaving a few for decoration later.

2. Remove the cooked lobster meat from the shell and dice, keeping the claws for decoration later.

3. Put the oil in a large paella dish or frying pan and sauté

Lemon Summer Pudding serves 6-8

INGREDIENTS: Packet of trifle sponges 100g unsalted butter (room temperature) 150g caster sugar

4 eggs, separated 2 large lemons (juice and grated rinds) 250ml double cream

1. Cream the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. 2. Mix the egg yolks together, beating them a little at a time

into the butter and sugar mixture. Add the grated lemon rinds and then the lemon juice. 3. Whisk the egg whites in a separate clean bowl until soft peaks form. Using a metal spoon, carefully and gently fold the egg whites into the creamed mixture. 4. Split the sponges in half lengthways, then place a layer in the base of a 1-litre soufflé or pudding dish, followed by a layer of the mixture. Build up layer by layer, finishing with a layer of sponge. 5. Cover with tinfoil and put a plate on top, then leave in the fridge (or freezer) until needed. 6. To serve: Loosen the pudding with a palette knife and turn onto a serving plate. Cover with whipped cream and lemon slices or just serve with cream or ice cream, as above.

the garlic, onion and pepper for 5 minutes until soft but not browned. 4. Add the chopped tomatoes and the diced meat and lightly brown the meat. 5. Stir in the rice and most of the stock, leaving a little to blend the saffron powder before adding to the mixture. Season to your taste (if you use stock cubes, then little salt will be needed). 6. Bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce and simmer for approx. 20 minutes, until the rice is just cooked and the meat tender. 7. Stir in the mussels, peeled prawns, lobster meat and peas and simmer for a further 8-10 minutes. 8. Serve the paella with a few strips of raw red/green pepper and the lobster claw, and scatter a few whole cooked prawns and cooked mussels in their shells over the top. 9. Serve indoors or alfresco, with a mixed salad and perhaps some garlic bread.

SIGNS

of the

times

Mick Botting’s vast collection of enamelled advertising signs in and around his Haywards Heath home has to be seen to be believed.

When Mick Botting was a boy, he rode a delivery bike for Dixons Chemists in Haywards Heath. Decades later, he chanced upon a well-preserved navy blue enamel sign advertising the very same shop. By this time, he’d already caught the collecting bug. Mick obtained his first sign advertising Brooke Bond tea, in unmistakeable vivid orange, in the 1970s. He now owns about 120 of the evocative enamel signs. With his wife Val, he lives among reminders of the bright optimism that once brought colour and promise to Britain’s drab streets. The first signs were produced in Birmingham by a sheet metal manufacturer called Benjamin Baugh. He applied for several patents after an inspirational trip to Germany in 1857 and took orders from railway stations and museums for decorative enamel panels. By the 1870s, he’d expanded into advertising signage and floated the company, which later ran from a large factory, the Patent Enamel Company Limited. Expansion of the railways signalled a boom for enamelled signs. Orders for a hundred thousand were commonplace

and, up to World War I, vast numbers were exported. Their heyday was comparatively short – steel rationing during World War II brought about their decline, and from the 1950s, large Americanstyle hoardings took over, partially because their size could cover up bomb damage. Mick’s collection has been built up from some unlikely sources. A beautiful Hudsons Cycles sign was rescued from an allotment where it had been part of an old shed. “I used to pick them up in Brighton for a fiver, but they can cost hundreds now,” Mick told me before showing me an evocative taxi sign given to him by a retired signwriter from Cuckfield. He was once bequeathed a Blue Cross tea sign after admiring it on a garage wall while working as a postman. “The man’s wife had dug the sign up in the garden and, before she died, she’d asked her husband to give it to me,” Mick recalled. His enthusiasm for these reminders of bygone England is easy to understand – the colours have subliminal appeal, reminders of times when objects were built to last, instead of the built-in obsolescence of today. Muted greens and classic duck-egg blues seem to hint at a permanence that is all too rare in our age of perpetual change; the optimistic advertising claims revel in an era free from the censorship of the Trade Description Act, 1968. ‘Craven A’ cigarettes will, apparently, “not affect your throat” and “a small www.sussexliving.com

spoonful of Brooke Bonds’ Tea is stronger and better than a big spoonful of other tea”. Although most signs concentrated their message in bold lettering, incorporating contrasting fonts, many had complex imagery to accompany the slogans. Mick has a striking advert for ‘Royal Ediswan’ light bulbs – the bulb held firmly between the jaws of a realistic lion – and a ‘Fry’s Chocolate’ sign depicts five expressions on a little boy’s face. This last sign is an example of how monochrome or sepia photographs could be reproduced on vitreous enamel. The process was invented at the turn of the last century although most advertising involved stencilling or etching onto a stone plate. Early signs used iron as a base but, in the 1920s, sheet steel began to be used after a breakthrough discovery that cobalt incorporated into the enamel helped adhesion between the steel and the enamel. The fact that signs are still bright after 100 years demonstrates the longevity and weather resistance of these processes. Many of Mick’s signs have retained their rich colour despite a century of exposure to the British climate. Railway stations were the first sites where enamel signage could be exploited – a captive audience and vast rail network made them an obvious choice. Trams and omnibuses were soon emblazoned with advertising, and commercial vehicles followed close behind. Signs sprung up wherever people were there to view them: garages continued on next page

Sheffield Park and Horsted Keynes Stations are

converted from smithies or stables used them to advertise their modernity, and shops soon had them fixed above and below windows. In rural areas, signs were fixed to barns and farmhouses, advertising products such as pig food and specialist agricultural products. Slogans were indicative of changing social values, and many were instructive. “Virol – Delicate children need it” or “Fry’s Cocoa – there is no better food.” Others appealed to class values: “Simpson’s Whisky – as supplied to the House of Lords” or “Hudson’s Soap – used in all the Happy Homes of England.” Mick has a Rinso washing powder sign that appeals to the eco-conscious householder when concernss about global warming was half a century away, by proclaiming “save coal every wash day.” Before the NHS, there was a great demand for health tonics. Mick has a bold sign for ‘Goddards famous White Horse Oils, the Magic

Embrocation’ in strident black, white and red. A wonderful advert emblazoned with a twin-steepled church proclaim: “Two Steeples Underwear Will Not Shrink.” The size and shape of many signs were curtailed by their location. Most were placed under shop windows or around doorways and conformed to simple rectangular shape, though Mick has a notable exception: a simple ‘Nectar Tea’ sign cut out as a cup and saucer containing a strong brew. Shops often provided chairs for customers and advertisers began issuing their own, with a builtin sign set into the back. The age of ubiquitous advertising was fast gaining momentum. Mick’s complete collection is pictured on his website (www.spanglefish.com/ oldenameladvertisingsigns), and he recommends Sheffield Park and Horsted Keynes Stations as good places to see enamel signs in situ. There are also examples in museums at Battle and Eastbourne. Further afield, the Old Victorian Village at Ironbridge (Shropshire) has many examples. If you’re keen to start your own collection, antique fairs may be a starting point. Modern reproductions are cheaply available, but Mick estimates they would only last a few months outside, being only really suitable for indoor use. Driving home from Mick and Val’s house, I gazed up at the vast photographic adverts that confronted me at every major junction. Somehow, they seemed a poor substitute for the charm of those classic pre-war signs, still cherished by avid collectors around the world.

Kate Bennett joined the East Grinstead Business Assocation in January 2011 as their Business Manager. Working closely with Stuart Scholes, Chief Executive, and Caroll Everest, Administrator (both pictured above with Kate, left), Kate’s role is to maintain contact with the many existing individual and corporate members, as well as recruiting new ones. Since she joined, EGBA’s membership has been steadily rising. She brings with her a wealth of first-hand business experience, gained as a Partner and Sales & Marketing Manager at a direct mail company, with many prestigious high-profile clients including BAA and the Financial Times. Kate is a true local girl. Married with two daughters, she has lived in the East Grinstead area all her life. Kate is keen to continue to forge valuable links with other local business associations, such as the Burgess Hill Business Parks Association (BHBPA) and Haywards Heath & District Business Association (HHDBA). Recent quiz nights organised by the other associations have proved to be very popular, and it’s EGBA’s turn to host the next one. Look out for details nearer the time. EGBA members benefit from two networking meetings a month, as well as a monthly newsletter. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. If you would like to find out more about EGBA membership, please contact Kate Bennett directly. Tel. 07801 082755 kate.bennett@egba.co.uk www.egba.co.uk

Letters Dear Sussex Living… …I just wanted to say a big thank you to the person who designs the covers of the Sussex Living magazine. It always looks exquisite and sharp. The styling of the images and photos chosen always gives you a vision of something very different and unique. So hats off to you for doing a fantastic job. As an advertiser in the magazine, I always look forward to receiving my copy to read about the latest events and the wonderful articles written by the Sussex Living team. Sonny Cutting Y365 Design, Hurstpierpoint … I have been away over Easter but was welcomed back with the enjoyable task of being able to sit and enjoy the article about Lingfield Nature Reserves in the April Sussex Living. I have already had two very complimentary messages saying what a terrific article this is. There is always an open coffee morning on Saturdays in the Community Centre where the magazine will be available, and start circulating around the villages. Thank you very much for all your help with this project and I can only hope your readers will be sufficiently interested (or curious!) to come along to see the Reserves for themselves and want to volunteer. Julie Hearn Lingfield Nature Reserves … Thank you for the great article you published about Downlands in the March issue of Sussex Living. It was a pleasure to host your writers and we have had many positive comments as a result of the publication. We are proud of our young people and extremely grateful to our dedicated staff, and it was good to see their efforts shared with the community. Rose Hetherton Downlands Community School, Hassocks

I passed a towering hollow oak by the village pond on my way to meet Lingfield Nature Reserves’ volunteers, little realising the ancient tree’s part in their colourful history. Publicity Officer Julie Hearn greeted me with a welcome flask of coffee, while Anne Richards introduced me to several volunteers already busy clearing and cutting, seemingly impervious to the bitter February wind. The Reserves are a triumph of local cohesion. Having secured the land from development by invoking the Allotment Act and following a two-year battle, two Nature Reserves have been created over the last 18 years. 12,000 trees have been planted, including a ring of English oaks, grown from acorns belonging to the 400-year-old oak by the village pond. “The first volunteers were goats called Bronwen and Salome,” laughed Anne. It was 7am. I had volunteered to spend a day as a pupil at Downlands Community School in Hassocks and it was time to face the bright red pullover that lay, full of expctation and slightly too short in the arm, next to my bed. As the school bell rang, I marched through swathes of uniformed teenagers who were all surely wondering what this middle-aged schoolgirl was doing in their midst. My own memories of school consist of excruciatingly dull lessons. I would spend almost the entire day gazing out of the window, honing my already vivid imagination and developing a worrying aptitude for tuning out my surroundings. No chance of that happening today. German was the first lesson and I was addressed as ‘the new girl’. Feeling more like the old girl, I noticed that gone was the blackboard and rubber of yesteryear – a screen projection board enabled the teacher to pull sections of virtual text from one place to another with her hand. It was more akin to a scene from The Matrix than endless lines of grammar in crumbling chalk. I could see how their attention was held; I never looked out of the window once. English was taken in the library, surrounded by books, with mini laptops replacing the inky jotters of

400-year-old oak by the pond.

my schooldays. Try doodling in the margins of a laptop and you can see why today’s technology is far more teacher-friendly and second nature to tech savvy kids. In the canteen, although I noticed that Jamie Oliver hasn’t entirely altered school dinners to include mung beans and locally caught trout, gone is the stodgy fare of my youth. Lunches now include healthy options (including vegetarian) and a wide variety of snacks and salads. Personally, I thought the Blackberry Crumble & Custard was hard to beat and a million miles from the endless semolina and jam I was forced to endure as a teenager. My next lesson was Sex Education, cunningly renamed as Personal Development Curriculum. Unbelievably, there was scarcely a sniggering 14-year-old boy in sight, just receptive young men continued on next page SuSSex Living March 2013

Brick and tile manufacturing played a major part in the history of Burgess Hill. The industry was responsible for transforming an underpopulated village into a thriving town. Until the early 19th century, Burgess Hill was dominated by a huge field known as St John’s Common, with small farms and buildings dotted around it. The field was public land, controlled by a local aristocrat, the Lord of the Manor. Anyone could use it for grazing farm animals, or recreation. The soil on the Common was rich in good quality clay, the ideal raw material for brickmaking. Unfortunately, you couldn’t take it from the Common. “In one case, somebody did, and he

Brickmaking in Burgess Hill had started much earlier, around 1480. There are two farm buildings on the outskirts of town dating from around then, which are made of locally manufactured bricks. By the late 18th century, there were several brick and tile works, but the industry couldn’t really take off until the common land was ‘enclosed’ – portioned out to local residents for private use. This happened to St John’s Common in two stages, in 1828 and 1855.

Burgess Hill’s clay-rich soil wasn’t much good for farming. It was great for brickmaking. was fined by the Lord of the Manor, and made to demolish his house and his kiln,” says Burgess Hill’s brickmaking historian, Fred Avery. In 1764, William Taylor, a local brickmaker, was running out of clay on his own property. Instead of just taking clay from the Common, he applied for permission, and got it. For the privilege, he paid an annual tax of 25 shillings, “to be laid out in the purchase of a warm coat for the oldest poor man of the parish not receiving the alms of the parish”.

At this point, Burgess Hill might still have become a farming town. However, the clay-rich soil wasn’t much good for farming. It was great for brickmaking, though, and the industry expanded hugely during the 19th century. Fred Avery writes: “From 1830 onwards, the most familiar sights to residents of Burgess Hill must have been the many rows of long narrow drying sheds, kilns, large mounds of clay left to weather, continued on next page

… I hope you will be able to include the information about our competition at Sussex Minerals. We have been most impressed by the entries in the past, and would be grateful to be included again. Helena Carter Sussex Mineral and Lapidary Society … In the 1960s, my family moved to Ditchling. During this time, I explored the many markets in Brighton and I bought two plant pots at £1.50 each, obviously very old and terracotta. They were constructed around the smallest plant pots, having leaves and fruit of the chestnut tree. Many of my friends and relatives have remarked about them over the years – there were those who wondered why they had pride of place: the sun room. They are the again in 2010, one with a pink hyacinth, and one with blue. Thank you for sharing the problem of their origin in ‘Building Blocks of Burgess Hill’ (March 2013). The

last word

We are pleased to be celebrating the first anniversary of our move to 128 High Street, Hurstpierpoint, in May. And while the current economic climate won’t quite allow champagne corks to be popping, at least spring has finally put in an appearance. This month, the Sussex Living Marathon is here again, and we hope to see as many supporters as possible on 4-6th May in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and East Grinstead. Building on last year’s success, the event is promising to be another great family weekend. If you’re thinking of sponsoring the marathon, it’s not too late. The Burgess Hill race is still looking for commercial sponsors and prizes. Please contact Lucie Venables (lucie.venables@ midsussex.gov.uk) if you can help in any way at all. Sussex Living is also a media sponsor of Burgess Hill Means Business, which takes place on Friday 10th May at the Martlets Hall. Always a great networking event for local businesses, we’ve been supporting BHMB for many years – do pop along to our stand and say hello. Back in the office, there’s good and bad news on Sonya’s broken foot: she’s had to have an operation, and we’re sending our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Come back soon, Sonya! Finally, we hope you like our little Sussex Dialect Quiz below. Do have a go and feel fere to email your suggestions to info@sussexliving.com. Answers next month!
