Editor’s comment Welcome to the May issue of Sussex Living, which we are delighted to celebrate with the results of our first ever photo competition, in association with Park Cameras. Springtime in Mid Sussex’ was the theme – and the best entries are featured in all their technicolour glory on pp. 7-11. We sent Roger Linn to Maidenbower to discover what lies behind the modern façade of this vibrant community. We are indebted to local historian David Palmer who very kindly agreed to share his extensive research on the subject with us (pp. 63-64). Over in East Grinstead, the town is celebrating its first Townscape (pp. 88-89), an exciting contemporary art trail which will run for 6 months, bringing the work of 10 local artists right to the heart of the community. This month’s Home & Garden feature (pp.12-17) is all about what to do with the spare room, should you be lucky enough to have one. Home office? Guest room? Home gym? The possibilities are endless… Lisa de Silva went to meet Pamela Parsons MBE, founder of Burgess Hill based charity Midwives And Parents Support (MAPS). Seeing a gaping hole in the provision of emotional and practical assistance for those who have lost a baby, midwife Pamela has dedicated herself to helping bereaved parents. Read her moving and inspirational story on pp. 55-57. Chantry Farm in Poynings (pp. 32-34) is one of those places that seems to have always been there, adapting to the
surrounding community through the centuries. Ruth Lawrence spoke to owner Beki Adams and was given the guided tour of the glorious countryside. Also this month, we are introducing two new columns: ‘Trash to Treasure’ (p. 47) sees Ruth making something amazing out of nothing special every month, reflecting the popular trend to re-use, upcycle and conserve natural resources. ‘Mind Body Soul’ (p. 58) takes a look at holistic perspectives and complementary approaches to wellbeing. We hope you enjoy them both. May, of course, wouldn’t be complete without an appreciation of the great outdoors, and where better to do this than in a Charity Open Garden? Every year throughout spring and summer, hundreds of private gardens take part in this wonderful initiative, and we always try to feature as many as we can in the magazine. This month, it’s Chelwood Gate and West Hoathly’s turn (pp. 444-45). Here’s hoping for more sunshine and flowers!

Photo Competition
Springtime in Mid Sussex
This spring, readers of Sussex Living and customers of Park Cameras had the chance to win a Canon PowerShot Sx50 HS, worth over £500, with our latest photo competition. We wanted you to get creative with your cameras, and you certainly didn’t disappoint – entries to the photo competition were many and varied! Not only is it obvious from all the glorious images you sent in how beautiful spring is in this part of Sussex, it was also fascinating to discover how different people interpreted the theme. We would like to thank all those who took part in the competition – as you can see from these pages, the standard was extremely high, meaning choosing a winner was no easy task!

Congratulations to Carole Baker whose photo of a bee collecting nectar charmed us all. Carole should feel very proud to be winning first prize, a Canon PowerShot SX50 HS, courtesy of Park Cameras. What we loved about this photo was the colours and detail that had been captured, along with the patience that it must have taken to get the shot. Carole used the caption ‘Lunch Time! Next flower please....’

In second place was Jon Ashe with his image ‘The Great Spring Flood’. The floods affected so many people, not only in Mid Sussex but across the UK. Whilst the sky is grey and overcast, there is still a lot of light and detail in the photo, with the bright green grass and reflection of the tree. There is even a rainbow appearing in the background. Just wonderful.
Jon and Peter win either a 20”x16” canvas print or a photographic training course held at Park Cameras – all they have to do is choose.

Third place was awarded to Peter Holy with his image ‘Sheep on Devil’s Dyke’, taken on a cold spring morning. We liked how the sheep seemed to be in an orderly circle in the fields, and how it was shot, with the photo leading the eye mysteriously across the fields, waiting for the viewer to explore more of Mid Sussex. continued on next page

Do you have a spare room that’s a bit, well, spare? Lucky you, because there are many new ways you can
make good use of extra space in your home.
Work that spare room! If your children have flown the nest, you’ve had an extension built, moved home recently or are simply reassessing your needs for space, you may be looking for inspiration on how best to use your spare room. How about these ideas for a little inspiration?
Home Office
Working from home is a reality for many of us, and the spare room can make a great home office. At first blush, you might think you don’t need much: a desk, chair, some shelving – how hard can it be? However, if the room is a multi-functional space, your mantra ought to be ‘storage, storage, storage’. No-one wants to see piles of files on the floor or desk, and being surrounded by clutter is not conducive to a calm, efficient mind. Built-in
cupboards, shelving and drawers can work wonders for hiding paperwork and general mess, making the room look pleasant and tidy when the office is closed. If the room is small, consider a glass desk to give the impression of spaciousness, and do invest in a really good office chair if you spend a lot of time sitting at the desk – your back will thank you. continued on next page S u ss e x L i v i n g May 2014

Dressing Room
Many of us dream of how amazing we could look if all our clothes, shoes and jewellery were organised and accessible. A dressing room is what we need! Storage is key here, so streamline the look with fitted and hanging cupboards along one wall for easy access to everything in your wardrobe. Keep colours light and neutral and perhaps invest in a full-lenth mirror, so you can get dressed in comfort and style, confident of your appearance before you step out. If the room doubles up as a guest bedroom, a convertible chair bed is a good option, as is a cheval mirror that can be moved elsewhere if necessary.

Do you have friends or family to stay a lot? Having a guest bedroom definitely takes the strain out of sofa surfing in the living room! Make it a proper room, giving the same attention to style and decor as you would your other bedrooms, but perhaps keeping to a slightly more neutral colour palette. If the room is not that spacious, try to fit a (small) double bed in all the same. Alternatively, you might want to consider bunk beds – particularly useful for children and teenagers – or a space saving sofa bed.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a room where all is calm – a sanctuary from the daily hustle and bustle, a place where you could go to lose yourself in a book, for quiet contemplation or perhaps yoga practice? A dedicated reading room would be my personal idea of heaven. Obviously, you will need to consider the amount of books to be housed and maybe find a good carpenter to fit bespoke bookcases. Floor-toceiling bookshelves can look fantastic, and a whole wall of books will give you that genuine library vibe. Lighting will be important, and comfort too. A daybed or sofabed could double up as a guest bed, and don’t forget the scatter cushions! Think of having bright directional light for reading, which can be dimmed or switched off altogether when you want to relax completely.

Hobby Room
Whether your passion is sewing, painting, photography or furniture making, a room specifically set aside for you to enjoy your hobby is a fantastic resource. No need to set up or clear away, you can simply indulge your interests whenever you feel like it. Depending on your chosen activity, it’s important to think about the practicalities here – hardwearing flooring, blackout blinds, a large worktop, special equipment – and plenty of storage is essential.
Media Room continued from previous page
Home Gym
Encourage the whole family to keep fit by exercising at home! But wait: gym equipment can clutter up even the tidiest of homes, and just where do you store your Swiss ball, free weights, kettle bells….? Whichever way you look at it, an exercise bike or rowing machine in the front room is not a great look, so why not have a separate space where you can be properly set up – complete with TV, sound system, Wii Fit and all the storage you need?

The shop that comes to you!
Perhaps you’ve always dreamed of dedicating a room to audiovisual enjoyment – so how about a large-screen TV, mini-cinema, surround sound system or even recording/editing suite? Sound quality (and insulation!) and media storage are your watchwords here, so you may need professional advice on how to maximise your enjoyment while keeping it private from the neighbours. A home should provide enough space for all your needs – not just sleeping, eating and socialising. Discover the fun in adapting the space in your home to your particular needs and make the concept of a ‘spare’ room a thing of the past.

How to WOW
The Kitchen People are proud
to be celebrating their 7th year of trading in Lindfield High Street.
Take a fresh look at The Kitchen People’s showroom – there are new kitchen displays, new suppliers and products and the return of designer Sarah Lee, back from maternity leave. With an intuitive sense of design and style, Sarah has always taken a great deal of pride in her work. After the recent birth of baby Daisy, Sarah has now returned to The Kitchen People with fresh focus, ready to help clients achieve the kitchen of their dreams. “I really enjoy getting to know our clients, understanding their needs, getting the design

right for their lifestyle and space, along with choosing the right materials and colours. But best of all, I love seeing them thrilled with their new kitchen.” The Kitchen People have always enjoyed an enviable reputation; owner Paul Edwards and Sarah both work hard to deliver outstanding customer service in all aspects of kitchen design and installation. Recently, they have made a conscious decision to broaden their selection of suppliers so that a wide range of kitchen styles – from traditional Shaker to sleek ultramodern – are now available across all budgets. The remodelled showroom
displays provide plenty of inspiration for those who are not yet decided on a particular look. “The trend at the moment is for a modern, contemporary style,” explains Sarah. “We’ve redesigned the showroom to show clients the type of look that can be achieved with handleless units, finished in either high gloss or matt, along with the latest in designer appliances and accessories.” These include a stunning designer extractor fan (which wouldn’t look out of place in the Tate Modern!) and printed glass splashback. Whereas the trend has been to paint the back of the glass in an accent colour, with advances

in digital printing clients can now choose to print anything, such as a favourite location, faux brickwork or even a picture of the family, on the back of the glass. Also new are midi towers for housing appliances. Less intrusive than full height towers, “midi towers are great for softening the impact of the kitchen. As many kitchens are now multi-zone rooms, with dining and lounging areas, they help the kitchen area interact with the rest of the room without overpowering it,” explains Sarah. “If you’re thinking of a new kitchen, the best advice is to come in, have a look round and have a chat with us,” says Paul. “We both have a huge amount of experience and can help inform your decision making. Over the years, I’ve seen every shape, colour and style of kitchen in every type of house from
“Our kitchen was very central to the design of our new home. We wanted it to be contemporary but we needed to embrace the warehouse space the house offered. The Kitchen People came up with some amazing ideas to work with our steel and glass and we are thrilled with the result. They were extremely professional and made the whole experience a lot of fun.” studio flats to windmills, so I’ve got a good idea of any potential pitfalls, and more importantly, how to get around them!” It’s this time spent planning and the attention to detail that makes the service offered by The Kitchen People stand out. Once you have an idea of the type of kitchen you would like, Paul will make an initial site survey and ask you for a ‘wish list’. Then it’s over to Sarah who will
create a computer-aided design incorporating these elements within the budget and give everyone a photo-quality 3D tour of the new kitchen. To ensure a top quality and stress-free installation service, The Kitchen People always use the same fitters, whom they know and trust, while in-house project management means there is complete peace of mind. They take care of all electrics, plumbing, plastering, decorating and can also complete any building or extension work needed, so clients don’t need to co-ordinate or organise anything at all. Regardless of whether you’re simply replacing an old kitchen or planning a larger project to remodel your kitchen space and give it the wow factor, everyone benefits from the same high level of service. What’s more, having a presence on the High Street means clients can call in any time to discuss changes or concerns. “We love being on the High Street,” Sarah tells me. “We have clients who had kitchens three or four years ago who still call in to say hello.” While the majority of the company’s work is local, personal referrals have recently seen The Kitchen People extending their reach to the wider parts of the county, working in Arundel, Worthing and West Wittering. “We always say to people:, don’t assume you can’t afford to shop for a kitchen locally,” says Paul. “Come and talk to us, because once you’ve taken into account the quality of the fitting and the service we offer, you’ll find we are competitively priced.”

Today I saw a mink. It sauntered across the road in front of me without the slightest concern for the cars whizzing back and forth across its path. It is not the first time I’ve encountered a mink and, as in our previous meeting, it was just as cheeky. I had promised to provide a couple of fresh trout for the supper we were giving and although my wife was somewhat dubious about my claim that “it wouldn’t be a problem”, I set off with a high heart to fish in a local stocked trout pond. After some hours, I had caught one smallish fish and had gone from fishing with tiny delicate artificial flies, to using a lure roughly the same size and colouring of a traffic warden. At the very end of the day, hot, bothered and trying to think of excuses for my failure to provide sufficient food for our guests, I hooked another fish. This one was very large. After 10 minutes of serious struggle, I became aware that an angler in a rowing boat was waving and shouting in an effort to attract my attention. I couldn’t imagine what he was doing because he must have seen that I was otherwise engaged, but he persisted and even took off his hat and waved it at me whilst he simultaneously pointed at my feet and shouted in true pantomime fashion: “Look behind you!” When I did, I found that a mink was watching me calmly, fully aware that I could do nothing about it while I was busy trying to land my trout. The mink held my first fish – the hope of our dinner party – in its mouth and, as I watched in horror, calmly dragged our supper away into the undergrowth. At about this time, the large fish I was trying to catch took the opportunity to break my line and escape. I had to order a curry on the way home. I’m not very keen on mink.

I went along to find out just what makes this independent garage stand out from the competition. Staffed by Craig, Steve and David, Ditchling MOT’s Limited get to know the vehicle and the customer, so that their treasured vehicle becomes familiar to the staff throughout its life. As well as Class 4 and 7, the garage now also offers Class 5 MOTs. Class 4 covers cars, light vans, ambulances and passenger vehicle up to 12 seats. Class 5 is vehicles with 13+ seats and Motor Caravans, while Class 7 covers vehicles over 3,000kg up to and including 3,500kg. It’s good news for owners of motor homes needed for those long summer holidays; even if you’ve forgotten to renew your MOT, same-day appointments are usually available – which could make the difference between a great trip and a postponed holiday. Local is what Ditchling MOT’s Limited are all about, building solid foundations with customers who appreciate honesty and good, reliable service. Customers working nearby can drop their car off en route to work and find their vehicle fixed, tested and ready to drive home by the end of the day. Open Monday to Saturday from a useful 8am until 5.30pm (until 12 noon Saturday), there is ample time to have your car serviced or tested while you are busy elsewhere. The garage is easy to find, has plentiful
parking and enough room for the largest vehicle, something that is often lacking at other garages. Most customers have arrived through word of mouth, which implies the highest level of recommendation. It is not unknown for the staff to receive homemade cakes as a personal ‘thank you’ from delighted clients! Prices are kept competitive

Strictly Gardening Strictly Gardening, Haywards Heath’s community gardening show, is certainly growing in reputation, with The Telegraph’s Helen Yemm and our new High Sheriff of West Sussex, Jonathan Lucas, both taking part this year. The event, which takes place in The Orchard’s Shopping Centre on Saturday 10th May, 10am4pm, will provide the very best of advice, ideas and inspiration for gardeners – both green-fingered or just green – as well as lots of stalls and entertainment. The very popular celebrity panel will also be there to answer your questions, chaired by Jean Griffin of BBC Radio Sussex, and anything goes as far as the questions are concerned – the more intriguing, the better! Meanwhile, the whole community will be involved with the schools’ painting competition ‘Over the Rainbow’, a Scarecrow Procession and Award and a quite beautiful sculptured bird table prize for the best mosaic from our Care and Nursing Homes. And, with the help of a West Sussex County Council grant, all these homes have been given the plants to create their own Sensory Garden. There will be a vibrant display of exhibitors and stalls, selling everything conceivable for your garden and, of course, fun quizzes for our visitors, with prizes from The Gardener’s Arms in Ardingly and Borde Hill Garden, not to mention our local school choirs and Pom Pom girls who’ll be entertaining us, and an ‘idiot’s guide’ to arranging flowers by de Novo Flowers. Hosting the Show, Orchards Manager Nicola Bird, is very excited: “The best thing about Strictly is that it involves the whole of our community,” she says. “Also, I’m getting married this year, so it’s pretty fantastic for me as we move into our own home, that I’ll be getting all the gardening help I’m going to need!” For more information and to get involved, please contact Nicola Bird on 01444 410 620 (NBird@fandcreit.com) or Ruth de Mierre on 01444 453 399 (ruth@i-dmc.co.uk).

Burgess Hill Bike Ride The 22nd annual Burgess Hill Bike Ride takes place on Sunday 8th June. For the first time, this local popular event is being organised by the Lions Club and Rotary Club of Burgess Hill and District. There will be some key changes under the ‘new management’, although most of the event will be familiar to regular participants. Cyclists will still have a choice of 10-mile, 20-mile and 40mile circular routes, all starting and finishing at Oakmeeds Community College in the town centre. All courses pass through the beautiful Sussex countryside around our town, including the South Downs at Fulking and views over parts of East Sussex. Entrants will be asked to pay their entrance fee but will not be asked to collect any sponsorship monies. In a new departure this year, only fees will be used to provide funds for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance and other local charities. Open Days will be held at the Market Place on Saturdays 3rd and 17th May and at the South Downs Nurseries on Sundays 11th and 18th May. Members of Lions or Rotary clubs will be in attendance. Entrance fees are £15 for adults and £5 for children aged 10 to 15, who must be accompanied by an adult. As an incentive to families, organisers are also offering a family ticket for up to two adults and two children, priced at a bargain £30. So the kids go free! “I am delighted that the Lions Club and Bike Ride Chairman Malcolm Stephens invited us to jointly organise this important local event. I am sure it will be just the start of a major collaboration, and I believe, a whole new
chapter for the Burgess Hill Bike Ride,” said President of the Rotary Club of Burgess Hill and District, Annemarie Allen. The famous Burgess Hill Bike Ride T-shirt, which is of a different design every year, will again be given away free to all advance bookers whilst stocks last. T-shirts will also be on sale to entrants on the day for just £5. All proceeds will go to the designated charities.
Balcombe History Society ‘Treasures from our Archive’ is the title of the Society’s Exhibition on Saturday 3rd May, 10am-4pm at the Victory Hall. A wide range of interesting exhibits will be on view, many of them new to us and never been shown before. Everyone will be welcome. Entry price is £1 and children are free. More than 40 archive items and local pictures will be available for all to enjoy. Many of the albums are from records kindly donated by Joan Dutton and put into presentation format by Tony Perkins. Some of the medieval coins and the 14th century bronze water jug found in Balcombe in 1897 – ‘The Balcombe Find’ – will be on display. Some of the groats, half groats and pennies minted in the reigns of Edwards I, II and III and Richard II (on loan from a private collection) will be exhibited and this will be a rare opportunity to see these items. A history of this discovery will be available and on display. The Coroner’s Inquest jury at the Half Moon Inn declared that the 12 gold coins and 742 silver coins were Treasure Trove. We shall have pictures of these gold Nobles – now held by the British Museum, on view. ‘Balcombe at War 19141918’ is a new Balcombe History Society book and will be on sale at the Exhibition at £5. This book describes the experiences of Balcombe families and is based mainly on the names on the War Memorial at the Victory Hall. It has been written and edited by Roy Bliss, Jasmine Waters and Richard Davison. Michael Noble designed
the evocative cover. These three busy people, our World War I study group, set out to research some of the effects the war had on life in Balcombe and on its people. Their work of the last five years results in this book. They will be at the Exhibition to tell you how they set about it. Over 200 men from Balcombe families served in the War. The total of those killed is not completely clear but 39 of them who did not return are named on the War Memorial at St. Mary’s Church. As much information as available about each of the men who fell in the War, including extracts from the War Diary, is provided in the central chapter of the book. The story includes “Life on the Home Front’ and the work of the VAD hospital in Stockcroft Road, as well as village events in the war years. This is a comprehensive study of special interest to Balcombe families and is a fitting tribute to all those who gave their lives for this country.
Little Horsted Fun Run Organisers of the Little Horsted Fun Run are delighted that a sponsor has stepped forward to pay for the promotion of the event along with the medals this year. Over the last four years, Little Horsted on the outskirts of Uckfield have staged a series of Charity Fun Runs. The runs have now established themselves to become an annual event, with over 250 runners taking part. This year, the organisers were very keen that everyone who participates should receive a medal. Unfortunately, due to a change of circumstance, the usual sponsor was unable to support the run this year and a plea went out in February to www.sussexliving.com

LOCAL find a new one. This has left organisers short of time and there was some doubt whether the run would be able to go ahead. Thanks to the support of the local media, we have been overwhelmed by offers of support and now three sponsors have come forward. McDonalds of Bell Farm Lane, Uckfield and Blackdown Services, Maresfield have come forward as the major sponsor. Godfreys Golf and Turf and RW Green Limited have now also pledged their support. The Village Schools Association has also shown interest in sending school teams to join in and raise funds for their own schools or charities. The local college UCTC have also agreed to participate to raise funds for their All Weather Pitch. Organiser Nigel Woods said: “The Little Horsted Fun Runs have really gathered momentum over the last three years and

editorial@sussexliving.com we are delighted to have so much support from the local community. We now expect to be able to hold the biggest and best event to date.” The runs will be taking place on Sunday 11th May at 10am, starting and finishing at Isfield Recreation Ground. There will be three runs to cater for all ages and abilities, a 1K, 5K and 10K, and everyone who crosses the finish line will receive a medal. Last year there were 250 runners and we hope for even more this year. Organisers are preparing for both spectators and hungry runners with refreshments, such as bacon butties and even cakes as well as some healthy options to keep spectators sustained and to replenish the runners after their runs. Further information about the runs along with application forms can be found at www. littlehorstedfunrun.co.uk.
The Cemetery Club A Review by Jean-Pierre and Joan Pirault of the recent production: Director Sheila Nye and the Henfield Theatre Company team have delivered a very professional and engaging rendering of Ivan Menchell’s ‘The Cemetery Club’, a successful Broadway Play and a 1990s American film. The story is a poignant comedy and parody of the bereavement of four very different Jewish widows Ida, Doris, Lucille and Mildred. The first three ladies are ostensibly friends and share the post husband experience, but each have their own mantra and manner of coping. The scenes move smoothly between Ida’s comfortable upper middle class living room in Forest Hills, New York, to a corner in a Jewish cemetery with the Brooklyn skyline as a backdrop. Ida, Doris and Lucille meet monthly in these two locations,
swapping memories and searching for a way forward. The arrival of Sam, an uncomplicated widowed Jewish butcher, who also comes to honour his dead wife, in the cemetery, quickly leads to deceit, refined squabbling, teasing and highs and lows of the three widows, revealing their inner desires and truths. He is simply the match that lights the fire for the subsequent story of emotions, although he too is wary of new relationships. Sam is cajoled into chauffeuring the trio, who are bridesmaids, plus Mildred, his latest ladyfriend, to another Jewish widow’s wedding.

LOCAL The preparation for the departure to the wedding, particularly with the unexpected arrival of Mildred, and the subsequent inebriated return from the wedding, sets the seal on the next stage of their lives… Although the plot is simple, it quickly and accurately reflects the realities of life after bereavement, which is clearly relevant to a mature audience, some of whom will have had similar experiences. How long should one continue to mourn, and should one move on with life and relationships? With a cast of only five, this is a story with irony, light comedy and human empathy. The acting, accents, timings, stage sets, window view and lighting are top class, almost faultless. American lexicon and clarity of speech are perfect. Both sets are atmospheric. Each of the ladies are dressed and coiffed to match their individual characters. Their

editorial@sussexliving.com idiosyncrasies are well portrayed by the actors Angela Reid, Di Norman and Sarona Key-Barry. Although the subject matter is international, the production authentically captures the Jewish American culture and one imagines oneself in the cosiness of a Forest Hills home and in the loneliness and isolation of a Jewish cemetery. This is West End material and quality, available in the Henfield Hall. Well done Henfield Theatre Company!

Can you remember how much you drank last night? Did you have an alcoholic drink last night? Did it start out as one glass of wine, but end up as two or three? Let’s be honest, you wouldn’t be the only one! Many people enjoy a drink, but what do you do when you find yourself drinking a bit too much a little too often? A new Alcohol Advice Line has been launched in West Sussex. Whether you want to know more about units and what the recommended limits are for lower-risk drinking, or if you are concerned you might be drinking a bit too much, the Alcohol Advice Line can help – just call 01243 642181 for guidance and information. There are lots of reasons why we should all have a think about our levels of drinking. The average wine drinker in
England takes in around 2,000 kcal from alcohol every month. While drinking five pints of lager a week adds up to 44,200 kcal over a year – equivalent to eating 221 doughnuts. Isn’t that food for thought? There are simple steps we can all take to reduce our alcohol intake. Why not keep a drinks diary to track your drinking? You might be surprised to see how many alcoholic drinks you actually have over a week. Have a smaller glass instead of a larger one. Or have a lowerstrength drink - there are lots of lower alcohol options
Did you know a standard glass of wine contains approximately 126 calories, and a pint of lager around 170 calories?
available these days. Have a glass of water between alcoholic drinks. It sounds like such a simple thing to do, but will keep you hydrated and help to avoid a sore head! You’ll be pleased to hear there are some immediate benefits if you cut down on your alcohol intake: l Feeling better in the mornings l Being less tired during the day l Your skin may start to look better l You’ll start to feel fitter l You may stop gaining weight Regularly consuming more than the equivalent of one large (250ml) glass of wine on five nights of the week for women or two pints of beer over the same period for men puts you at risk of developing health problems. It’s easy to go home after a
long day at work and reward ourselves with an alcoholic drink, but we might not be aware of the long-term health issues this can cause. That’s why it’s so important to talk more openly about alcohol and to find out what we can do to lead healthier lives. So call the Alcohol Advice Line on 01243 642181 for guidance and information. You can find out whether your alcohol intake qualifies as ‘risky’ drinking, get advice and support on how to reduce your intake and you can choose to receive followup calls from the service, providing moral support when you need it. The Line can help to direct people to relevant services if required. And if you’re concerned about a friend or relative’s drinking, the Line can direct you to a service that can offer advice.

LOCAL diary: Sunday 18th May. And this year, we want to make sure that even the SMALLEST riders can take part so, while making sure that we provide a challenging ride for the Bradley Wiggins impersonators amongst you, there’s a free Mini Bike Ride for your little ones too! Once the main Ride has begun, The Broadway will be transformed into a safe cycling track for Under Four’s and Over Four’s to have their very own Bike Ride track. We’d like as many children as possible to take part, so bring the family out for the day and don’t forget: there will be medals for all finishers! To make sure that everyone stays safe, Anna James and her team from Robin’s Nest Nursery are busy planning the very best zig-zags and chicanes for the older ones, while large coloured rubber markers and cones will keep the little ones happy as they zoom around the track.

Lindfield Motors is 40 years
old this year and the company has never been busier or more successful.
Left: Owners Alan and Nicola Yule
Driven
by success The motoring industry is a highly competitive marketplace, so for an independent garage like Lindfield Motors to be celebrating its 40th anniversary is a superb achievement. Not only does it mean that they’ve been doing many things right all these years, but they’ve been able to embrace the huge changes that have occurred over that time – changes in car ownership, changes in the economy and, perhaps most of all, changes in technology. Lindfield Motors has always been a family business. Founded by Jim and Janette Yule, these days the garage business is run by their son Alan and his wife Nicola – and what a team they make! Alan is the technical expert and runs all the electronic and mechanical side of the business, ably supported by four highly qualified mechanics. Nicola’s front-of-house expertise is a hit with the customers and, together with two colleagues, she is in charge of all admin functions. Lindfield Motors provide a full range of garage services including MOTs and servicing, but also offer more sophisticated facilities such as engine and vehicle diagnostics for virtually any modern car. “We have always invested in technology and we have the skills and the software necessary to diagnose and fix even the most complex vehicle systems in house,” Alan said. “Customers can bring in any car and we can work on it without in any way endangering the manufacturer’s warranty, as long as we use approved replacement parts.”

Gone are the days of simply getting under the bonnet with a spanner because, as Alan explained, computers run pretty much all the car’s systems now, with some vehicles having as many as 40 separate control units. “So when you’re at Lindfield Motors and you see a mechanic sitting in the front seat of your car with a laptop, remember he’s not watching telly but simply doing his job,” Nicola laughed. Circumstances may have changed a lot over the last 40 years, but at the heart of the company’s success has always been a genuine care for their many, many customers. “And while we’re not ‘bargain basement’,” Nicola went on, “we don’t charge a premium on labour rates like main dealers who need to pay for swish showrooms and smart waiting areas. You’ll find a fish tank and a big smile in our reception area.” But Lindfield Motors has much more than that: an enviable reputation built up over 40 years for being a friendly, highly competent and good value local business.

Chantry Farm:
In the lands of time… Beki Adam had a dream
about a long sloping field leading down to a building on land wide open to big skies. In 2010, she crested the hill to Chantry Farm, just up for sale with a local agent, and suddenly recognised the place she had ‘seen’ 7 years earlier.
As Beki’s story unfolded, I realised that her premonition could have arisen from her remarkable connection to land and spirituality. She was a Buddhist nun for 17 years in Scotland and travelled widely in Tibet and Nepal where she developed a deep reverence for the Earth and sustainable practice. Together with her partner Karl, she has slowly begun to repurpose an ancient farm with roots that go back to the 14th century, when the land was connected with the chantry at Poynings. People are known to have lived here during the Bronze Age (2000-700 BC) where hill ceremonies took place on ridge constructions; a round barrow tops the summit near the farm and closer still is a rare, well preserved platform barrow. This would have been a funerary monument, a low, flat-topped mound of earth surrounded by a shallow ditch, material from which would have been used to construct the barrow. Standing on the hill overlooking the farm, I could imagine someone gazing out over this landscape 4,000 years ago. Close to an orchard of fruit trees that Beki and Karl have recently planted is a feature that suggests territorial land division in the middle Bronze Age, marking out space within communities. Called a cross dyke, a long ditch runs parallel to banks. Walking through this ancient monument connects us to the lives that lived, farmed and worshipped in this area. A round barrow lies near the top of the cross dyke; this was a rubble funerary mound around 18m in diameter and a meter high. The relationship between the two features
32

points to a connection between land division and burial practices. Was land ownership a Bronze Age concept that secured burial in a specific place within that land? Chantry Farm disappeared when Henry VIII seized all chantries for the Crown. It reappeared in records in the 1600s when it was part of the Danny Estate. Beki discovered a chunk of Tudor glass from the late 17th century while turning over the manure pile. Listed by Lewes Museum as the kick-bottom of a wine bottle, it still gleams with a gold patina from 400 years under the soil. Pyecombe Village suffered so severely from outbreaks of Plague that, in 1603, people moved away and there are not many visible remains of the original village today. Human habitation was far more fluid then, vulnerable to the ravages of disease and liable to upheaval. www.sussexliving.com

So severe that Chantry Barn was requisitioned as a makeshift hospital, the writer describes “its situation is one of the most commanding and beautiful and salubrious in the kingdom.” He paints a terrifying contrast between the landscape surrounding the barn and the horrors within: “the country presented a picture of health, vigour, prosperity and happiness. Within lay sixteen poor men, women and children, at the gate of death by a dreadful disease.” After use as a temporary ward, Chantry Farm returned to normal. Beki and Karl researched local characters that worked nearby and discovered some interesting links with George Miller, a blacksmith continued on next page

who worked in Pyecombe forge, now a private house. eBay eventually brought up a ‘Pyecombe Hook’, a shepherd’s crook with a superbly forged hook, made by George himself. The hook was forged from an old gun barrel and was used by the shepherd to grab a sheep by the hind leg, not the neck as is commonly thought. Made in the 1940s, it’s a reminder of how land use has changed over such a comparatively short time. Although Swaledale sheep graze Chantry pasture, its main income is now as a low impact, sustainable campsite, complete with shepherds huts which now shelter campers instead of shepherds. Beki and an industrious team of volunteers and friends are reintroducing small scale food production, which has not been done here since the Black Death decimated the population. Land use was altered irrevocably when people who had grown cereals, rye and oats were no longer there and the sight of a single man and his flock was quickly to dominate the downland scene. The campers now help to fund farm restoration and make sustainable food production viable once again. It’s a successful process. One visitor commented: “I knew it was going to be
spectacular, but I didn’t know it would be this good.” Beki believes low-tech living is a respectful nod to such an ancient setting; it echoes the way of life that would have been the norm for countless generations who have lived and worked at Chantry Farm since those early Bronze Age peoples. The cross dyke now acts as a convenient place to gently net birds so that they can be ringed before migration; it’s an example of how a landscape continues to be re-imagined by new generations. Birds are netted by local bird ringing charity, the British Ornithological Trust, delighting campers who might just catch more than a glimpse of feather here and there. Wildlife research is now of prime importance as the threat of human disease is no longer an issue. The local Woodland Flora and Fauna group have placed an owl box on a specific site at Chantry and I was lucky enough to see two Barn Owls emerge as the box was checked. Flying pale and silent from the trees, they are another reminder of how people’s connection to wildlife is changing. Barn Owls used to be persecuted as harbingers of death but now enjoy concentrated efforts to conserve them, even though their habitat is still dwindling. Beki’s determination to leave the tussocky grass alone has resulted in the owl’s favourite hunting ground being plentiful. Patches of long grass where voles wander ensure well-fed owl chicks and delighted campers who get to see the large birds quartering the fields at dusk. From prescient dream to fully functioning reality, Chantry Farm is very much about the future, having travelled full circle through millennia, returning to simpler, sustainable ways to live.
A ‘Pyecombe Hook’, used by the shepherd to grab a sheep by the hind leg, was made by local blacksmith George Miller.

Carving words in stone Stone carving and lettering
is a labour of love, dedication and application. Chris Elsey takes commissions for memorials, tributes and much more. Chris Elsey shares The Stone Carving and Lettering Studio at Wivelsfield Green with Geoffry Aldred and their apprentice, Tom Sargeant. It’s a wonderfully welcoming place – tools and working drawings lying beside beautifully considered letters carved onto tactile slabs of indigenous stone. After training in lettering at Reigate School of Art & Design and completing his degree in calligraphy at Roehampton Institute London, Chris worked for himself for 11 years. In 2009, he decided to set up the studio with Geoff, who trained in Weymouth before working on Hereford and Salisbury Cathedrals. Tom began his apprenticeship last year. The son of a letter carver, he has an innate passion for his chosen craft. All three are presently exhibiting in an important group show, ‘Masters and Apprentices’, in Suffolk until the end of June. Chris was first introduced to lettering by master letter carver Tom Perkins. They became good friends and with Tom’s encouragement and tuition, Chris found his true vocation. Talking about the process of commissioning a memorial, Chris stressed the importance of partnership. “We decipher what the person was about. Everything we design is bespoke and we open the client’s eyes to what is possible.” A potential customer would usually visit the workshop in
Wivelsfield Green to discuss their ideas and the person they are commemorating. As Chris remarked, “it’s the complete opposite of choosing from a catalogue. It’s a consistent process between us and the client and we endeavour to achieve the best from every commission.” Many memorials require relief carving of an image or symbol of particular relevance. Chris explained the importance of the design as a whole and the way it sits with the letters in the chosen piece of stone. The type of stone is crucial. Cumbrian or Welsh slates may complement an entirely different letter style to the local Horsham stone, used since Roman times for its suitability for carving. Ripples on its surface denote the fossil remains of an inland Jurassic lake. It’s humbling to realise how deep time can become such an integral part of a contemporary craftwork, which itself will last for countless generations. Commissions are also taken for house names, book covers, calligraphy and illustrations and anything relating to hand lettering and relief carving. The same level of attention and purpose is applied
Many memorials require relief carving of an image or symbol of particular relevance. to every design, whatever the scale or medium. It’s this thoughtful, meticulous approach that achieves such memorable results. The pieces I saw at the workshop were so individual that I could begin to feel the presence of the commemorated person lift from between the letters. This is the Arts and Crafts philosophy of ‘truth to materials’ imperceptibly at work. The subtle tilt of a letter, the ‘rightness’ of a particular piece of stone and, ultimately, the satisfaction of having designed and made a fitting tribute for a beloved friend or relative.

Take advantage of the May Bank Holidays and go shopping for your garden.
Blooming Times When planning for a succession of colour and interest in your garden, the month of May can be a stumbling block. Most spring blooms have faded, whilst many that herald summer are yet to appear. Why not make an expedition to your favourite garden centre and discover some plants to fill the gaps. You can never have too many fritillaries. Some years ago, inspired by a visit to the fritillary meadows at Magdalen College, Oxford, I determined to grow my own ‘meadow’. Alright, I confess it’s only a 6ft x 8ft patch but, nevertheless, it is looking pretty good, with about 100 flowers that have self-seeded from the original dozen bulbs. Dampness is what fritillaries crave. Mine spent much of last winter under floodwater, but they didn’t care a bit and have come up stronger than ever this year. You’ll find pots of them for sale now. Sit the pot on a patio table to enjoy the mysterious flowers close up. Plant them out when the blooms have faded. Surprisingly perhaps, they also make splendid cut flowers. On the subject of cut flowers, euphorbia is one of those plants known as ‘the flower arranger’s friend’, making an acid green foamy backdrop to other blooms. Wear gloves when handling euphorbia; the stems produce a skin-irritating sap. Euphorbia ‘Craigieburn’, with its beetroot-red foliage, looks fabulous planted with orange tulips. Most varieties like a dry, sunny spot. The vigorous ‘robbiae’ is the exception to the rule and loves it cool and shady. I wouldn’t be without it, but it has the propensity to run riot, so keep it under control.
In the 1980s, herbaceous poppies dropped off horticulture’s fickle fashion catwalk but they’re now making a welcome return to favour. Like operatic divas, they stand in the spotlight, clothed in sumptuous costumes holding their audience in raptures – and then abruptly flounce offstage. Their flowering performance may be fleeting, but they still give good value throughout spring as their emerging foliage beautifully compliments other flowers. Plant them in a sunny position; they enjoy rich living. Good varieties to try include ‘Goliath’ (fiery red), ‘Royal Wedding’ (pure white) and ‘Mrs Perry’– launched as a new variety in 1903, it’s still one of the best pink forms. No-one can deny the beauty of forget-me-nots, but they become invasive thugs if you’re not careful. Instead, try Brunnera macrophylla, a well-behaved hardy perennial which bears dainty forget-menot-type flowers and interesting marbled leaves that, unlike forget-me-nots, remain mildew-free. Some varieties produce blue flowers, others pure white. The variety, ‘Jack Frost’ makes a neat clump of silvery foliage that lasts all summer long. A stunning plant for a shady border, Brunnera is a real class act – add it to your shopping list!…

Charity gardens to grow your
imagination A new season of charity
gardens is opening to the public, with some truly magical places just waiting to be discovered. Deirdre and Keith Birchell had a daunting task on their hands when they moved to Holly House in Chelwood Gate, back in 1971. There was no garden except a tangled scrub of spindly trees that obliterated the entire house, making it invisible from the street. Deirdre and Keith’s first task was to fell 150 trees, packed so close together that it was impossible to walk between them. They did, however, manage to find some hidden gems among the chaos; Deidre planted a twig they found beneath a shading rhododendron which eventually grew into a magnificent tulip tree. With two young children, their initial need was for a play area, so
42
SuSSex Living May 2014
much of the new garden became lawn, but as their needs changed, the garden evolved with them. Holly House was turned into a residential school for children with learning difficulties and Deidre took lessons in the garden; the children grew alongside the trees and flowers and many still write to fondly recollect their magical time at the house. Now, bed & breakfast guests get to wake in what must be one of the most tranquil settings imaginable: foxes, badgers, slow worms and toads are regular visitors, leading to some wonderful photo opportunities. Birds are attracted to the multitude of berries and insects in the garden, while red polls, siskins, nuthatches and woodpeckers are seen in season, and a pair of jackdaws roost in the chimney. Deidre’s favourites are the fuchsias and roses but she has a soft spot for the Liquid Amber tree which displays deep red leaves in the autumn. Keith’s speciality is ponds; the larger pond at the bottom level of the garden has newts and I spotted a large frog basking among the carp in the cottage pond. www.sussexliving.com
A toad has taken lodgings in a hole in the swimming pool wall and herons frequently visit, perhaps fooled by the large lead heron that Deidre bought from Chelsea Flower Show. An unusual feature is a stunning spiral sunken garden constructed by Deidre and Keith’s son. It leads into a gravel base corralled by a low sweeping wall – an excellent space for contemplating the surrounding trees. This peaceful acre is a perfect place to unwind and wander. Teas will be served. Tucked away behind a high hedge on the outskirts of West Hoathly is a rambling ex-alehouse with three acres of glorious gardens. Diana Hill has lived here at Duckyls Holt since her husband carried her over the threshold in 1968. Over the years, Diana and her daughter Sophie have poured oodles of love, care and creative attention into the grounds. The result is a series of enchanting landscaped spaces, each with its own very distinct character. “When I first arrived, there were just a few shrubs here and an awful lot of lawn,” says Diana, as she leads me along a groomed gravel walk away from the house. It’s early spring and the beds on either side of us are looking a little sparse, but by the time Duckyls Holt opens to the public at the end of this month the place will be a riot of blooming colour. “I can’t claim to be a landscape gardener,” Diana adds modestly. “The garden just evolved. We started by planting a lot of rhododendrons over the big expanse of lawn at the back, and it really just went from there.”
Duckyls Holt has the kind of garden you can quite happily get lost in. At the back of the house is a long lawn, fringed by flowerbeds and dominated by a flourishing magnolia tree. Follow a path up to a second level – once a field that was incorporated into the garden - and you eventually end up at a glasscovered swimming pool and a collection of wellstocked greenhouses. “If I had to have a favourite part of the garden, it would be my greenhouses,” Diana says. When Duckyls Holt opens for charity at the end of May, visitors will be able to retreat to this part of the grounds and enjoy the view from a comfortable chair. Alternatively, they can nab a table outside the kitchen and order tea with scrumptious homemade cakes, served by a team of volunteer helpers. Finally, hidden away behind the gravel parking area is the most spectacular rose garden. A fountain provides a soothing background soundtrack and wisteria rambles above a shady gravel walk. I could linger here for hours…

Time to
Compost With longer days and a stronger sun now is the best time to start composting. It’s fun, it’s free and it’s an easy way to help the environment and give your garden a natural boost. Everything that once lived will eventually rot and produce vital nutrients that can be returned to the soil. Composting is a way of speeding up this process by creating the ideal conditions for microscopic organisms to work their wonders. By composting at home you can recycle your green waste and produce your own, free soil conditioner. You can learn the right balance of what to put in your compost by experience but a rough guide is to use equal amounts of ‘greens’ and ‘browns’. ‘Greens’ such as fruit and vegetable peelings, apple cores, and fresh grass clippings should be combined with the same amount of ‘browns’ such as woody prunings, cardboard torn into small pieces, wood shavings or sawdust. Mix and match is the key. The ‘greens’ will rot quickly and act as ‘activators’, but on their own they will just decay into a smelly mess. ‘Browns’ are carbon rich and slower to rot. It’s all about getting the right balance. There are dozens of household items you can include – like cardboard, egg shells, even envelopes – but some things are best avoided like meat, grease, butter, oil, dairy and cooked food. Earthworms can also play an important part in the process. Worms help distribute air and water more evenly throughout the compost. They also help to break it down so that the micro-organisms can work more efficiently. If your compost bin sits directly on the ground drilling a few small holes in the bottom will allow excess water to drain out and earthworms to wriggle in. You will know your compost is working when it starts to shrink and the contents become crumbly, dark and smell like earth. This usually takes between six and nine months. Spread the resulting compost on your garden soil to give it a welcome boost, one that might be needed after a long spell of wet winter weather when many of the essential nutrients are washed away. Your flowers and plants will never have looked lovelier.

to make a home there. Here’s how to make one for nothing.
Home for spring Spring is here and the morning air is full of birdsong; nests are being built and territories claimed. Although it’s easy to attract songbirds with food, it’s harder to persuade them to make a home in your garden. They need to nest in the middle of a fruitful place which will provide enough food for the hungry nestlings and the hardworking adult pair. While building a simple nest box from scrap wood will not guarantee an occupant, it’s an easy project that gives birds another option; site it well and you could be rewarded with the appearance of a healthy brood. I used an old pine plank pulled from a skip. Any untreated wood can be used as long as it has a minimum width of 15cm (6 inches). I tried a basic design that can be cut from a single 150cm (5 foot) length of timber. Mark out the lines according to the measurements below and cut with a jigsaw, or handsaw if you’re feeling energetic. Once you have the pieces cut, drill pilot holes for screws in the places shown and join together, leaving the roof separate. Next, drill the entrance hole using a 2.5cm (1 inch) drill bit if you want to exclude house sparrows and larger birds. It’s important
not to have a wider entrance than needed – you really don’t want squirrels to gain access and eat the eggs within! Drill a hole under the entrance to push in a sturdy twig or short length of dowel for a perch. The roof needs to lift so that you can clear out old nesting material; it’s best to make a hinge which covers the join of roof and back. This can simply be a length of rubber, roofing felt or even a leather strip from an old belt. I used a spare piece of self-adhesive roof flashing, with drawing pins as added strength on either side of the join. You can then either secure the roof against lifting (by Herculean squirrels) with a single removable screw or attach a small hook and eye. The final task is to drill a couple of holes on the backplate to attach to a suitable tree. Site the box away from the prevailing wind at least
2m (6 foot) above the ground in a shaded place, reasonably hidden but accessible to a prospective user. Hopefully the box will become occupied if the birds consider there is enough regular food for their growing brood nearby. Once you’ve mastered a basic design like this, you can build larger or more elaborate boxes. Guidelines for more box dimensions and entrance holes suitable for different bird species can be found on the RSPB website www.rspb.org.uk. Happy building!

Smart Shopping
heaLth beaut y st yLe
MIRROR MIRROR MIRROR on the wall...
is shopping an art or a science? Pleasure or pain? Your favourite pastime or just hard work? The vast majority of women I know have a complicated relationship with shopping, and especially when it comes to buying clothes. This contrasts sharply with the men in my life who, on the whole, try their best to avoid anything that smacks of a ‘retail experience’. For us girls, going shopping has become so much more than just buying stuff. It’s a glimpse into the glamorous world of youth and beauty, of fashion and style, where self-confidence is tied up with how we look, what we wear, how we present. Of course, the fashion industry is only too keen to encourage us to spend some ‘me time’ indulging in ‘retail therapy’ because ‘we’re worth it’. While this may work for Paris Hilton et al, those of us with more down-to-earth lifestyles and budgets can’t afford to get carried away. So, how do you shop smart?
Make a plan. Start with a wardrobe review to see what you already have and take inspiration from the world of fashion etc, then make a list of items to buy – some will be ‘need to have’ and some ‘nice to have’. Armed with your list of gorgeous things, you’ll be able to shop with focus, not aimlessly wandering around the mall hoping for something to catch your eye, wasting time and money in the process.

do your research.
The internet can be a wonderful place, so use it to check for garments, outlets, locations, price comparisons – all before you hit the shops. Obviously, you can buy online too, though I personally prefer to touch, feel and try on every piece before I’m ready to commit to a purchase.
set a budget. Much, much easier said than done but do try – it’s the best antidote to expensive impulse buys you could easily regret later. Have a ballpark figure for each item and stick to it. Better still, leave your credit cards at home and only take cash. Not only does it make overspending impossible, it helps you to connect with the money you’re paying out, making the transaction much more meaningful.
Fatigue and stress do not for good shopping decisions make!
set a timeframe. Don’t shop all day and don’t shop til you drop. Fatigue and stress, especially in airless shopping malls, do not for good shopping decisions make!
Beware The sales. Why is a garment suddenly more covetable just because it’s cheaper? Don’t be fooled by the psychology and don’t be seduced by cut-price bargains. Take refuge in your shopping list: if an item is not on the list, step away.
Know your own mind.
Feel positive. It’s never a
I always shop alone, not because I don’t have anyone to take with me but because I prefer not to be swayed by someone else’s opinion, however well meant. Believe me, many wardrobe mistakes have been made that way. That said, a trusted shopping buddy may work wonders for you.
good idea to go shopping when you’re not quite yourself. Feeling hungry, bored, tired, upset… these are all emotional states that can skew your view of what looks good or what you actually need. Back to health With Rupert Pusey joining the family practice AG Pusey Associates, Mid Sussex can look forward to another 30 years of outstanding osteopathic care.
Perhaps it was written in the stars, but with both parents working as osteopaths, Rupert Pusey (pictured above) always knew osteopathy was his vocation. “I grew up with osteopathy,” he tells me, “and so had first-hand experience of the benefits it offers. At school, I played a lot of rugby and would often end a game smashed up. Luckily, my parents were brilliant at patching me up and Dad even taught me some basic manipulations.” This informal training was soon built upon when Rupert went to study at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine. Rupert’s four years of training also involved studying naturopathy, meaning he is also qualified to give nutritional advice to supplement any osteopathic therapy. Although osteopathy is often thought to be just for back and neck pain, this gentle but effective treatment can help treat a wide range of conditions, from headaches to sleep problems and sports injuries. What’s more, as 21st century lifestyles often include
high stress factors and long hours sitting in front of computer screens, a monthly session of osteopathy can be used as a preventative measure to straighten us out, boost wellbeing and ensure our bodies are working at their optimum level. As a large group practice, AG Pusey Associates’ patients benefit from a team of professionals with differing specialities, along with commuter-friendly hours from 8am to 8pm weekdays and from 9am to 6pm on Saturdays. For those unable to visit the clinic, home visits can be arranged. For those visiting Awbrook Lodge, a treat is in store: patients can enjoy the beautiful tranquil setting, ample parking and such a warm and friendly reception, it feels like you’re visiting an old friend. Having joined the practice last year, Rupert loves his new job. “There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a patient hobble in and then literally jump off the couch after being treated. When I’ve helped someone who’s been in a lot of pain, I thank my lucky stars that I do this job – it’s so rewarding!”
There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a patient hobble in and
literally jump off the couch after treatment. Rupert also feels fortunate to be working alongside his mother, Julia Brooks. “I’m working with her, not for her, and that’s the key,” he explains. “There’s so much to learn and she has so much to give in terms of experience, that it works brilliantly.”

Be breast aware – at any age! Breast cancer is often associated with younger women, yet around 1,300 women aged 70+ are diagnosed across Kent, Surrey and Sussex each year. Survival rates are lower in this age group compared to the under 70s.
Dr Tina George, lead GP for cancer at NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), is heading up a campaign to increase awareness of the disease in older women. Awareness of symptoms is as important as attending mammograms and regularly checking your breast area. Dr George said: “The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the higher the chance of survival. More than 90% of all women diagnosed with the earliest stage survive for at least fi ve years, compared to 15% of women diagnosed at a late stage.” Signs and symptoms of breast cancer include: › a lump in the breast
› a nipple that’s turned in (inverted)
› a change in the size or shape of the breast
› a rash (like eczema) on the nipple
› dimpling of the skin or thickening in the breast tissue
› swelling or a lump in the armpit
› discharge from the nipple
Mother-of-two Sharon Botting from Cuckfield was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. She said: “I felt pins and needles in my chest area. I went to see my GP who examined me and found a lump.” Because of the hidden location of the lump deep within the breast tissue, Sharon had a series of mammograms (x-ray pictures) and then a biopsy (taking a small sample of tissue to examine under a microscope).
Sharon was diagnosed w ith a n aggressive form of breast cancer and began treatment with surgery, then chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She recalled: “When they said it was cancer, I was in total shock. I just wasn’t ready for that. I was scared. I had moments when I questioned if I could get through this, but I dealt with everything that was thrown at me. Walking away from the last of my regular appointments was a fantastic feeling – an incredible relief.” Sharon said: “If there is anything of concern – get it checked out. Don’t hesitate, don’t be afraid. Had I ignored the early symptoms, I don’t know if I would still be here. You have to take responsibility and be aware of the signs. Please – don’t put off going to see your GP.”
Joan Brown, 81, cancer survivor
1 in 3 women who get breast cancer are over 70, so don’t assume you’re past it. A lump isn’t the only sign of breast cancer. If you’re worried about any changes to your breasts, tell your doctor straight away. Finding it early makes it more treatable and could save your life.

There can be little comfort for those who have lost a baby, but sharing
support, experiences and advice
with others can be an important part of the grieving process.
Remembering our angel babies The Midwives And Parents Support (MAPS) charity was established by midwife, Pamela Parsons in 1991, to offer both emotional and practical support to those who have suffered stillbirth, late miscarriage, termination due to foetal abnormalities, stillbirth or cot death. As a midwife, Pam was deeply affected by the distress and sadness bereaved parents suffer. One night in 1988, when Pam was working nights at the old Cuckfield Hospital, she cared for a young mother in early labour with her second child. Sadly, her baby boy was stillborn. Shocked and upset, Pam mourned with her and her husband over the loss of their beautiful baby. “Sharing in their loss created a bond between us and after she went home, she would phone me at the hospital whenever I was on night duty to talk. She would also come into the hospital and just sit at the top of the stairs in a daze. As much as I wanted to talk with her, I was in charge of a busy maternity unit and couldn’t give her the time she needed. It set me thinking that there must be so many other people in the same situation and that’s where I got the idea to start a support group,” explains Pam.
angel of my Tears How do you love a person who never got to be, or try to envision a face you never got to see? How do you mourn the death of one who never got to live. When there’s nothing to feel good about and nothing to forgive? I love you, my little baby, my companion of the night. Wandering through my lonely hours, beautiful and bright. What does it mean to die before you ever were born, to live the lovely night of life and never see the dawn? Ah! My little baby, you lived like anyone! Life’s a burst of joy and pain. And then like yours, it’s done. I love you, my little baby, just as if you’d lived for years. No more, no less, I think of you, the Angel of my tears. (Author Unknown)

and then trying to help them with whatever needs they have. continued from previous page
With financial help from her husband, who gave her his Christmas bonus of £100, Pam set up MAPS. Their first meeting was in July 1991. “I didn’t know what to expect,” confides Pam. “It was very emotional, but I’ve always believed in listening to bereaved parents and then trying to help them with whatever needs they have.” To improve her ability to help, Pam self-funded three counselling courses, including a bereavement course, and undertook a scanning course, so she could help reassure mothers during subsequent pregnancies. Support group meetings are held on the first Friday of every month in a room at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath, 7.30-9pm. “It helps people to realise that they do not have to cope alone. By sharing support and experiences they appreciate that some of their more uncomfortable feelings are part of the grieving process,” says Pam. “Also, when you share your loss with others who have been through the same experience, it can offer a degree of comfort and hope.” As men can sometimes bottle up their feelings, MAPS For Men has a dedicated place on the website, for men to share and offload their thoughts and feelings, anonymously if they choose. There is also help for siblings who may be unable to say what they feel, so MAPS provides diagrams and drawings to help them express their emotions. As these babies are important and deserve to be honoured and remembered, however short their lives, MAPS holds a Memorial Service once a year, usually in November, to remember the life of each baby. This Family Service of Remembrance includes readings and poems and Pam decorates a named candle for each baby. The candles are lit and each name is read out. “We had over 150 people last year,” Pam tells me. “One girl said: it’s the one time I can take time out to just sit and cry.” There is also a Book of Remembrance, kept in the Chapel at the Hospital. Each baby has a page with their name and family members can write their messages and thoughts on it. The pain of losing a child never goes away and Pam will also try to trace babies for those with a past loss. She recently traced a baby born in 1963, and the family attended the Memorial Service to finally have the funeral they had always wanted and needed to experience. The charity also provides memory boxes for those who come in to hospital and lose their baby. “They are in total shock and don’t have anything with them,” explains Pam. “We provide them with a memory box which includes a blanket, tiny babygros or, if the baby is really small, a knitted angel pouch, an appropriately-sized teddy, a camera, photograph album and a candle.” www.sussexliving.com
Right: Pamela Parsons MBE. Below: Annual Family Services of Remembrance, with a decorated name candle for each baby.
There are also support materials kept in Casualty for hand and footprints of babies who have been lost to cot death, and notification cards to tell family and friends the sad news. MAPS can also support bereaved parents with information on hospital procedures, post-mortems and funerals for their babies. Pam is now retired and can devote herself to her charity full-time, visiting people at home. She is always on call and can be contacted at any time, either by the hospital or directly by bereaved parents themselves. In 2007, Pam was awarded an MBE having been nominated by six different couples that she helped. However, her biggest reward was delivering live babies to previously bereaved parents. “There’s nothing like that after you’ve been there when a baby has died. It was absolutely lovely.” Contact Pamela Parsons by telephone 07979 014120 or email pparsonsmaps@yahoo.co.uk You do not have to be in the area for Pam to help, or indeed have suffered your loss in recent years. www.midwivesandparentssupport.co.uk

MIND BODY SOUL Holistic perspectives and complementary approaches to health & wellbeing
Mindfulness is the experience of being ‘in the moment’.
A practising Buddhist, Suzanne Lockwood explains how being mindful can help.
It is always the space that makes sense of things: the white page between words, the silence between sounds, and so it is with allowing and training your mind to be still.
“Everywhere you look, you see information on Mindfulness. It has become the focus of scientific studies, with proven benefits: relieving stress, anxiety, depression and many other mental issues. Equally, those interested in wellbeing, happiness and creativity have adopted it as a core technique. Mindfulness has, at its roots, an ancient Buddhist practice of meditation. It has relevance for the lives of all people seeking to escape, for whatever motivation, from the fast-paced technological, materialistic world we live in. Mindfulness meditation is a technique that allows you to observe yourself moment to moment, meeting the moment as it is and becoming ‘aware’. As you develop more awareness, it is not always the reality you expect. In fact, you can find that your
58
SuSSex Living May 2014
habits of mind are undermining your happiness and contributing to your state of unhappiness. The good news is that meditation is about transformation, and with awareness you see that you have choices and can change. In closing your eyes, far from escaping or shutting off from life, you can, in that moment, come right up to face yourself. What seems like a way of avoiding is, in fact, the opposite and can have the effect of making you feel more alive and expansive than ever before. It gives you a taste of freedom. With this awareness, you are able to be with the rawness of your life, and realise so much time is spent trying to pursue and cling on to desires and push away fears. The mindfulness practice helps us to let go of this automatic habitual reaction, this cruise control set to cling to pleasure and
avoid pain. This awareness that we don’t need to react helps us in our ability to deal with discomfort and difficult times that come our way. The mindfulness practice creates space in our busy lives. It is always the space that makes sense of things: the white page between words, the silence between sounds, and so it is with allowing and training your mind to be still. From this stillness will come a creativity to take into your life. Mindfulness may start by sitting quietly on a cushion, but it is a way of being that helps everywhere – in traffic jams, dealing with fractious kids or after a stressful day at the office. You can find out for yourself what having that space could do for you. Find a quiet spot, sit still, close your eyes for one minute and see how you feel.” www.sussexliving.com

If you or a family member is in need of home care services, Everycare can help. When David Dimelow needed help caring for his elderly parents who lived over 200 miles away, he found a local care provider through the internet. Sadly, he was not happy with the quality of care received, and the experience helped him to decide on a career change. David left the IT industry, where he had worked for 35 years, to embark on a new challenge of providing high quality, friendly and professional care, which would enable people to carry on living independently in their own homes. “It is now exactly a year ago that I decided to quit IT and join the Everycare organisation. Having done a lot of research into the care industry, it soon became apparent that the reputation enjoyed by Everycare and the emphasis placed on high quality care services made it a company I wanted to be part of,” says David. Everycare provides all the care services needed to keep clients living independently in their own homes for as long as possible. That means providing everything from help with getting up and going to bed, meal preparation, assistance with medication, laundry, cleaning and shopping. It can also include sleepover services
Home is where the heart is for those leaving hospital or needing extra comfort during the night. Drawing on his own experience, David appreciates that the most important elements of the service are providing companionship, warmth, empathy and continuity of care. David now owns the Everycare franchise for Mid Sussex. In keeping with his ethos of offering the highest quality of care possible, he has initially decided to concentrate his efforts around Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and the surrounding villages. “In time, I will expand and hope to open offices in East Grinstead, Horsham and the Steyning area, but at the moment I’m keeping it small, because I can’t expect my carers to travel such long distances,” he explains. Having started the business at the end of May last year, the first member of staff was soon appointed: Katie Manville, Registered Care Manager. With 20 years’ experience in the care
60

industry, Katie was instrumental in helping with the compliance necessary to achieve Care Quality Commission accreditation. It was all in place by last October and Everycare welcomed their first client in November. With the growth of the business, the latest addition to the office team is Keighly O’Reilly who works as co-ordinator and administrator in the office; it’s her job to organise the carers’ rota. The carers are the heart of the business. Everycare firmly believe that one of the best ways to offer a better quality service is by looking after their own top quality staff; loyalty is rewarded. Carers receive good rates of pay, mileage allowance and holiday pay, ensuring that service users can be confident they receive the continuity of care other providers often struggle to provide. “We look for people with the right attitude and aptitude. Once on board, we give them thorough training in all our policies and procedures,” says Katie. www.sussexliving.com

service for the individual.
All carers undergo an enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) check and are fully insured. As you would expect, the industry is heavily regulated and the carers are all helped and supervised by Katie to ensure that high standards are maintained and everything is done to a client’s specific wishes. Once a client or family member has made contact with Everycare, Katie will visit to make an initial assessment of their specific needs, often with the help of a relative. “Everything we do is built around the individual,” she explains. “We want to know everything – from how they like to be addressed, how they take their tea and coffee, where they like to eat their meals, how they like their sandwiches made and what medication they need to take and when. When someone is living at home, it’s completely different to being in hospital or a care home. We are very aware that our carers go into clients’ private home and are

Not only are they surrounded by all their personal belongings, with perhaps a garden to enjoy and neighbours and friends close by, but it’s maintaining a degree of independence that contributes to an enormous sense of wellbeing. While David has found the transition from working for large corporations to working for himself challenging at times, what drives him is his desire to deliver the type of high quality care that his own parents would have benefited from. “I put in more hours than I ever did before, but I don’t mind because I’m building a business based on values and standards that I believe in.”

Maidenbower
Modern living country style Maidenbower,
a neighbourhood near Crawley, was
built around 20 years ago – but its origins date back much further.
I was wrong. For 20 years or so I’ve been driving up and down the M23, passing and thinking of the Maidenbower development just south of Crawley as yet another crowded blot of huddled houses on our Sussex landscape. Then I spent a little time there researching the place, and I now know that Maidenbower is in fact a thriving community built around green fields and open spaces. There are modest houses and substantial homes, mature trees and quiet streets. In Maidenbower Park, there are sporting and recreational facilities for every age group including a social club and an airy, bright indoor/outdoor café. So how did this thoroughly successful new ‘village’ come about? ‘Modern Living Country Style’ was the slogan created to describe what life would be like as a resident of the proposed large housing development to the south east of Crawley. Today we know it as Maidenbower, but it can be difficult to remember that this bustling 3,700 household strong community where close to 10,000 people live was only begun in the late 1980s.
In 1986, Crawley Borough Council published their new local plan stating that the principal area for future housing development would be the parcel of land formed by the triangle defined by the M23 to the east, the London to Brighton railway line to the west and the area around Pound Hill to the north. Then, as now, there was a strong demand for new housing. It was driven by Crawley’s economic growth and the continuing expansion and success of Gatwick airport, but the plans met with strong and organised protest, largely by the residents of Pound Hill and Three Bridges. However, their opposition came to nothing, perhaps because the proposal was not for simply another housing estate, but for a ‘village’ with all its own amenities and infrastructure continued on next page
Top: Balcombe Road looking towards Street Hill, c1905. Bottom: Little Blackwater Farm, Three Bridges.
The name Maidenbower first appears on maps in the 1700s when the land was part of
the Crabbet Park Estate.

such as schools, a neighbourhood centre and medical facilities. This new community was to be known as Maidenbower, which was quite lucky for today’s residents because the other name that could have been used to describe the area was Frogshole. One thinks that houses might not have sold quite so easily on Frogshole estate. Maidenbower and Frogshole were the two principal farms in the area selected by the planners. The latter, though not chosen as the title of the new development, has become a well-frequented local hostelry: Frogshole Farm pub. Sadly, much of the old 16thcentury building was destroyed by fire in 2008 but a number of the original features such as the large inglenook fireplace remain. Situated in the heart of the community, the now rebuilt pub with its beautiful half-timbered front is extremely popular and recently its pub garden was voted the best in Crawley. From top: The old Frogshole Farm; Frogshole Farm 1969; Railway Line Worth; Worth Rectory Lodge 1908.
Maidenbower as a name first appears on maps in the 1700s when the land was part of the Crabbet Park Estate. It was owned by the apparently delightfully eccentric Lady Wentworth, who had inherited it from her father, Sir Wilfred Scawen Blunt, who had brought the first Arabian horses to England. Lady Wentworth was passionate about two things: her Arabian horse stud and Real Tennis, and in 1916 she employed one Geoffrey Covey as stud manager and tennis coach. He was world champion at the sport and, in fact, went on to win the world title three more times after coming to Crabbet. Part of his duties there involved two hours of coaching a day for Lady Wentworth in the specially built Real Tennis court. She styled herself as ladies’ Real Tennis champion; during coaching sessions, nobody was allowed into the spectators’ gallery. Lady Wentworth ultimately rewarded her stud manager and coach with the gift of Maidenbower Farm, which included the derelict Frogshole farm buildings. It was a modest enough gift because the quality of the farmland was poor. However, when the land was compulsorily purchased in 1986, three grandchildren of Geoffrey Covey who were now the owners, received what is thought to be a substantial amount of money for their property. Not a bad reward for a few tennis lessons! One measure of how successful the Maidenbower development has been is given by the growth of the school population. Maidenbower First School opened its doors to only 13 pupils in January 1992; now there are at least 2,000 children attending Maidenbower’s infant, primary, junior and senior schools. Maidenbower’s construction was completed largely on schedule by the turn of the century. Now, 26 years after the first sod was turned, the low-lying pasture land which was once ancient woodland where iron was forged, has been transformed into today’s dynamic, modern community.
In writing about Maidenbower and its history, I drew heavily on ‘A Brief History of Maidenbower’, the historical research conducted by David Palmer, which can be found at www.maidenbower.org.uk, and on conversations with several of Maidenbower’s friendly residents.

Crawley Down Walk Discover the countryside around
Crawley Down on this easy walk
along tracks and field paths.
This walk starts from the centre of Crawley Down by the small parade of shops in Old Station Close. The parade of shops marks the site of Grange Road Station, one of two stops on the former Three Bridges to East Grinstead railway. From Old Station Close, turn right, and walk ahead up Sandhill Lane. Where Sandhill Lane swings right, carry on ahead along Burleigh Lane. At the entrance gates to Burleigh House, sidestep to your left to go over a stile and into a field. Follow the wide track ahead; where the track finishes carry on ahead on a right-hand field edge. On reaching a junction of paths, turn right along the obvious path towards Fen Place Mill. At the corner of a wood, go through a gate and bear left. Follow the wide track ahead which bears right and then left around a pond, and carry on along the meandering track which eventually swings right to follow alongside a stream. The stretch of water away to your right is the mill pond at Fen Place Mill. The path bears left. In a few yards, go sharp left over a stile and a small footbridge. Walk uphill and when you have reached the top, go over a stile to drop slightly downhill, then bear right along the left-hand edge of a long narrow field.
After about 300 yards, look for a plank bridge on your left, cross this and walk uphill on the signed path. At the top of the hill, follow a right-hand field edge to a crossing path. Turn right and walk through an open field, with farm buildings on your right. Opposite the farm buildings, turn left on a signed path and follow the obvious track ahead. Pass through a gap in the trees and maintain direction, ignoring the track that bears away to your right. Pass through another gap in the trees to shortly join the Worth Way. Once on the Worth Way, you might like to turn right for just a few yards to look through the trees to Gulledge. Gulledge is a magniďŹ cent Grade II listed building, a timber-framed property with a three-gabled carved Jacobean front that replaced an earlier exterior. To return to the walk, turn left along the Worth Way all the way back to Crawley Down. continued on next page SuSSex Living May 2014

continued from previous page
The Worth Way is a 7-mile shared user route between Crawley and East Grinstead and mostly follows the course of the former railway between Three Bridges and East Grinstead that was closed in 1967. Shortly after passing Crawley Down Pond on your right, the Way enters a residential area and you should follow the Worth Way signs back towards the start of the walk. At the end of Hazel Way, ignore the Worth Way sign pointing right, and cross the road and go along a tarmac path with a post in the middle. This leads into Copse Close and on reaching a T-junction, turn left to arrive at the centre of Crawley Down.

Could you be a foster carer? This May, Foster Care Fortnight, highlights the need for more foster carers. West Sussex County Council urgently needs carers for children aged over 7 years. On any given day, there are over 62,000 children living with foster families in the UK. Yet it is estimated that another 9,000 foster carers are needed to provide nurturing and supportive homes for children in need. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the main criterion for becoming a foster carer is that you can meet the needs of the child. Age, sexuality, marital status, religious beliefs, whether you’re a home owner or tenant, whether you are working or claiming benefits – none of these will ever be a barrier as long as you have the skills and qualities to meet the needs of the child. Obviously, all potential foster carers will need to go through an in-depth assessment to become a foster carer and they will need to provide the foster child with their own bedroom. There is a huge demand for foster homes for older children. Speaking to experienced foster carers Jane and Peter, it is clear that while there can be challenging behaviour, nothing is insurmountable. “Once you’ve set down the house rules and given them the time, patience and encouragement they need, looking after older children can be very fulfilling,” says Peter. Jane agrees. “By the age of seven to nine, children are beginning to get a sense of who they are, and they’re developing their own interests which you can nurture. You can really see the difference you’re making and that is very rewarding.” Jane and Peter also feel that it’s important to keep an open mind when reading about prospective foster children. “What one carer may find difficult may not bother you, so keep a sense of perspective when filtering out what would and wouldn’t work for your situation,” explains Peter. The couple run a family business from home and so are fortunate to have the flexibility in their working lives that foster caring often requires. While many people do both work and foster, it’s important to realise that fostering may include doing the school run and there will be meetings and training to attend, so a flexible or part-time job may be more suitable. “There’s nothing more rewarding than helping families in difficulties. Given the space to resolve their problems, it’s a fantastic feeling to see families reunite and children return home where they belong.” smiles Jane.
Age, sexuality, marital status, religious beliefs, home owner or tenant, working or on benefits –
none of these will ever be a barrier to fostering, as long as you have the skills to meet the needs of the child. If you are interested in becoming a Foster Carer, please contact the Fostering Recruitment Team on 0330 222 7775, or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fostering As part of Foster Care Fortnight, the West Sussex County Council Fostering Recruitment Team will be holding two events where you can find out more about becoming a foster carer: Saturday 17 May, 10am-4pm Crawley Library, Southgate Avenue, Crawley RH10 6HG Thursday 22 May, 10am-4pm Shoreham Library, St Mary’s Road, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 5ZA

Food Glorious Food Hail bounteous May, when crab, asparagus and Jersey Royals are all in season. What more could you possibly want? Roast Asparagus My favourite way to prepare asparagus is to roast it, which seems to intensify the flavour. This is ridiculously easy to do: Cut off the stem ends. Oil a roasting dish with olive oil and sprinkle on a little sea salt. Add the asparagus spears and a little more oil to coat the spears. Roast them for 10-20 minutes. Serve with lots of melted, unsalted butter. Utterly delicious!
Watercress & Jersey Royal Soup serves 4
The watercress season runs from April until mid-November; the Jersey Royal season is April, May, and the first half of June. This soup’s season, therefore, has to be April to mid-June, in other words: May. Incidentally, you may be interested to know that watercress is said to be a good cure for a hangover and was once thought to be a remedy for baldness too! INGREDIENTS: 2 bunches of watercress 200g small Jersey Royal new potatoes, sliced finely 50g butter
1 litre vegetable stock 2 echalion shallots, peeled and finely sliced
1. Put the shallots, butter and sliced potatoes in a heavy based saucepan and cook over a medium heat for 9 minutes.

PRB Accountants are committed to providing
the best possible service to personal and commercial customers alike.
The Accountants you can count on
PRB Accountants LLP are a substantial firm of accountants and business development specialists in Haywards Heath with a complete range of tax and accountancy services aimed at both private individuals and commercial clients. Business clients can choose from a very extensive menu of corporate services – from routine financial and accounting operations, to the much more sophisticated business of planning strategies for growth and succession. And if all that makes the firm sound quite scary and heavyweight, that’s not at all the impression I gained when I visited their offices recently. Chris Whitley-Jones, PRB’s personable Managing Partner, made me feel very welcome when he took me round their bright, open-plan offices and introduced me to their cheery, friendly staff. “I hope,” said Chris, “that you’ll think we are good communicators who have a genuine commitment to our clients, because that is very much our operating style. We are so much more than just number crunchers.” He went on to tell me that, as a company, they are essentially proactive in their approach, seeking always to help clients improve their profitability or their tax position, and always responding quickly to client requests. “We try to look after our smallest personal tax client in the same way and with as much care as a big commercial client, because you never know what may develop. From little acorns... as they say,” he laughed. “We are very proud of our reputation as a team of dynamic and approachable professionals.”
With four partners and 15 other staff, PRB Accountants are not a small enterprise – in fact, they’re probably the pre-eminent accountancy firm in the Haywards Heath area, with some 2,000 clients on their books and a roughly equal balance of commercial and personal customers. The company’s steady growth over many years has been driven almost exclusively by word-of-mouth recommendation from happy clients and from involvement in networking forums, where PRB’s openness and experience has proved invaluable to members of the business community. As Chris says, “this is a people business and it’s very exciting to deliver a result for them, whether it’s getting a tax refund from HMRC, mitigating a tax position or helping to set up a new business.” What’s more, PRB’s computer technology and clever software allows them to model many different business scenarios and options for their clients, continually asking ‘what if ?’ to obtain the optimum strategy for moving forward. With a wide range of technical as well as professional skills in house and a genuine desire to help, PRB are highly motivated to provide the maximum support, help and peace of mind for their many personal and commercial clients.
We are proud of our reputation as a team of dynamic and approachable professionals. We’re
more than just number crunchers!

every private landlord is hoping for long-term, profitable and trouble-free tenancies. That’s exactly where Martin & Co can help.
No more fretting about letting! If you have property to let, you’ll know that employing the right Letting Agent is absolutely essential. You need the reassurance of a company that is thoroughly professional and takes care of your property as if it was their own; a company that really cares about their landlords and gets to know their tenants; a company with the experience and commitment to ensure that your rents are paid promptly, your property is maintained to the highest standards and your tenants and potential tenants are carefully vetted. In short, if your property is in Mid Sussex, you need Martin & Co.
98% of their landlords rate Martin & Co’s service as ‘excellent’ Bob and Sandra Reeves own the franchise and run it as a family business, with offices based in Burgess Hill. In talking to them about their business, I was struck by their enthusiasm and their passion for excellence in everything they do. Their success may be because they brought to their letting agency all the skills and experience gained in a lifetime of business. Bob retired as Chairman of a highly successful printing group some years ago. After a welldeserved break seeing the world, he and Sandra decided to go into the property business. That was in 2006. In 2012, only six years later, they won the Gold Award for Best Letting Agent in the South East and – are you sitting down? – Gold Award for Best Letting Agent in the UK. These awards are the ‘Oscars’ of the Estate and Letting
Agents industry and are voted for by landlords – so Bob and Sandra’s achievement was remarkable by any standards, particularly when you consider that 98% of their landlords rated their service as ‘excellent’. So, what are they doing that sets Martin & Co apart in such a competitive industry? They will tell you that their success is down to personal service and attention to detail. “We understand that property owners are putting their trust in us,” said Sandra, and Bob told me “that’s why we communicate with our clients regularly, advise them and try to maximise their income by, for example, ensuring that they’re charging the right rental amount and that they have continuous occupancy without void periods.” Of the 350 or so clients on their books, over two thirds have

fully managed letting agreements, so Bob, Sandra and their team of five experienced and enthusiastic staff get to know the tenants really well. “The better we understand our tenants’ lifestyles and future plans, the less chance there is of our landlords getting nasty surprises,” laughed Bob. Backed by Martin & Co’s nationwide network and able to draw on their deep reservoir of experience, the company is ideally placed to deliver troublefree, profitable tenancies to private landlords all over Mid Sussex.

With the growth in sales turnover and their successful rental business also getting busier, the company has taken the opportunity to move to 151 High Street, directly opposite South Avenue in the village. ‘Be the Business’
Budding entrepreneurs as well as existing and new companies will be able to bid for support grants again this year, when West Sussex County Council (WSCC) launches its second wave of ‘Be the Business’ funding. Businesses across West Sussex were boosted to the tune of more than half a million pounds last year thanks to the support programme from the County Council and its partners. More than 100 new, start-up and existing companies applied in a bid to unlock funding of up to £30,000. Projects had to be 50% match funded. A total of 38 bids were successful, with £653,705 being awarded in the first round of funding. The County Council has set aside a further £500,000 this year to run the programme again. Louise Goldsmith, West Sussex County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for the Economy, said: “I’m delighted we are in a position to be able to run our ‘Be the Business’ programme again this year. We were hugely oversubscribed with bids last year, so to be able to offer people the chance to have another go is great. “A key priority for West Sussex County Council is the economy, promoting West Sussex as a great place to come and do business and helping our existing businesses to grow and thrive. “Our county has so much potential. These additional funds can help unlock that potential

Businesses are given a second chance to apply for funding from WSCC.
by allowing people to perhaps have the confidence to take that step to become an entrepreneur and start up their own business. And, of course, the funding that has been awarded to our established companies is just as important in these hard economic times.” Of the businesses that received funding last year, 41% were companies that had been trading for less than three years and 59% were established organisations that had been trading for more than 3 years. Successful applications came from a variety of industries, including construction, manufacturing, retail, education, child and youth services, food manufacturing and production, tourism and leisure, engineering and IT from across West Sussex. As well as an opportunity to bid for funding, the ‘Be the Business’ programme offers all businesses and companies across the county one-to-one support as well as peer-to-peer business networking sessions, workshops and events. Details about how people can apply for funding will be announced over the coming weeks.
These additional funds can help unlock potential by allowing people to take that step and start up their own business.

Celebrate contemporary art and discover east
Welcoming visitors for over 1,000 years, East Grinstead has a rich history, enjoying an attractive architectural grinstead through an heritage and a thriving community spirit. This spring, exciting new art trail. the town welcomes an exciting new initiative, Townscape 2014, a contemporary art trail, which was the brainchild of Example, a group of local artists. “The idea was to find a way to bring art to a community that doesn’t have access to big museums and art galleries, giving local people and children a chance to experience contemporary art,” explains artist, Hannah Buckley. To make the art trail possible, Hannah put together a successful bid for £25,000 from the Arts Council. “I think we were successful because not much funding comes this way, which probably helped,” confides Hannah. The trail will run for six months, from 30th May to 30th November and artwork from 10 local artists will be showcased at 14 sites throughout the town. In addition, Standen, the National Trust property,
art
will also host a display. The project includes work from the seven artists who make up Example as well as three others, who responded to an open call for artists with strong links to East Grinstead. All of the art on display has a link to the town in some capacity. Visitors can enjoy exhibits that include portraits of well-known faces around town, an artist in residence in a High Street bookshop, a quilt composed of children’s drawings and textiles based on medieval maps of East Grinstead. “Townscape is a community project for everyone to enjoy, so it was important that access was free and that the sites were easy to visit. We’re planning to have two trails for people to follow, but as the art will be on display for six months, we are hoping that people will just dip in and out as it suits them,” Hannah tells me. As well as discovering art, Townscape also encourages visitors to discover spaces in their town that they may not previously have visited or appreciated. The project has been well received by the local community and all the cafés and venues involved are very excited to be part of the project. The Bluebell Railway Station is one of the sites and

at 14 sites throughout East Grinstead.
Townscape will be a great introduction to the town for passengers arriving at East Grinstead. “We’ve got a beautiful town,” says Hannah. “The trail will be a great way for people to discover more of what it has to offer.” While all the artworks will be on display for six months, one piece, Route 22, will be a huge permanent art installation in the town subway. Created by Example artists and pupils at Sackville School, the piece incorporates handmade ceramics and sprayed stencils. Suggested by the town’s youth council to refresh what was a scruffy space, supported by art teacher Mr Andrews and funded by the Mid Sussex and Community Initiative Fund, Route 22 has transformed a once unloved part of the town. “Overall, we’re hoping that Townscape will get the community switched on to visual art as well as encouraging people to become an artist for the day, either taking photographs or bringing along their sketch pads. We’re also looking to incorporate The
Big Draw during October half term, giving visitors the chance to experiment drawing in different art mediums,” explains Hannah. The launch event is open to all, so if you’d like the opportunity to meet the artists involved in Townscape, do go along to the Greenstede Gallery, Chequer Mead Theatre, on Friday 30th May, 6-9pm and get inspired.

last WORD The
It’s springtime in Mid Sussex and we are delighted to be featuring our first ever photo competition, in association with Park Cameras. We were wowed by the quality of the entries and really wish we had enough pages to show them all! Congratulations to the three winners: Carole Baker, Jon Ashe and Peter Holy. And, of course, many thanks to Andy Steel of Park Cameras for working with us! And talking of competitions, our Eggciting Easter Quiz in the April issue was very popular with our readers too. Winners will be announced in our June issue, so you will need to be patient for a little while longer please. Our newest team member, Charlotte Parvin, has been a busy bee this month. She thoroughly enjoyed the very well attended Luxury Wedding Show at Ashdown Park Hotel on 23rd March. She also got her first opportunity to meet everyone at the East Grinstead Business Association meeting on 14th April – an evening full of useful conversations and happy socialising all round. We are shuttling back to Spain at the beginning of May to visit Mum, who is recovering well from her recent operation. On our return, we are really looking forward to attending the Open For Business event on 9th May in Burgess Hill, which is always a great opportunity to catch up with local businesses. We hope this year’s event will again be a mixture of business and pleasure. Finally, don’t forget the Mid Sussex Marathon – now in its third year – which is taking place on 3rd, 4th and 5th May in East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill. Best of luck to all those taking part and every success to the organisers. Wishing all our readers and advertisers an enjoyable May.
