Stargazing

Before Dementia, Milly always enjoyed her weekly manicure.

She still does. At Maycroft Manor, industry-leading residential, nursing and dementia care are just the beginning. We really get to know our residents too - it’s how we help them to enjoy all the little things that make a big difference to their day. Here, residents living with dementia can still enjoy the experience of a visit to the hair salon, the delicious taste of fresh coffee and homemade biscuits in the café, or even just the sense of fulfilment that comes from helping out with the gardening. It’s all about living life to the full. To see for yourself what makes Maycroft Manor a care home with a difference, go to hallmarkcarehomes.co.uk, call our Customer Relationship Manager Melinda on 01273 799622, or drop by for a visit at 2-8 Carden Avenue, Brighton BN1 8NA.

Editor’s comment Welcome to Sussex Living’s November issue, which we hope will bring some welcome light to what can often be a dark and gloomy month. Look up to the sky at night and what do you see? A load of pretty, twinkly stars? Not really sure? If you had a powerful telescope, or even a decent pair of binoculars, you’d be amazed at the depth and detail that can be seen. We sent Ruth Lawrence to talk to astronomy enthusiasts to open up the night sky for us (pages 8-12). A big thank you goes to local photographer Les Hunt who took our stunning November cover photo: the Perseid meteor shower, as seen from Birling Gap near Eastbourne, this summer. Also this month, we are keen to dispel the myth that moths are dull and destructive creatures. According to Michael Blencowe, our expert in the field, there is actually no clear distinction between butterflies and moths, except that the latter suffer from bad PR! Take a look at pages 23-25 and discover for yourself that moths are, in fact, fascinating and beautiful little stunners.

Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK, with over 40,000 new diagnoses per year. And while that’s a shocking fact, it’s good to know that there are support groups out there offering real emotional and practical help. We spoke to Jenny Stanger who runs the Haywards Heath group (pages 57-58) to find out what happens there. Finally, have you started thinking about Christmas? Are the children counting the number of sleeps til Santa yet? How many shopping days until Christmas Day? I’m sure many families are already in full negotiations over who is spending Christmas where... We’ve put together some tempting tips and inspiring ideas to get you in the mood for the festive season. Go on, have a mince pie on us!

As darkness falls, most people are drawing their curtains and switching on lights. But for astronomers, night is the perfect time to

fling open the doors and look up to the skies.

To Infinity and beyond Densely populated Sussex has more than its fair share of light pollution, yet astronomers are in abundance. Having just purchased my first ‘serious’ telescope, I wanted to discover the basics of successful stargazing and went to meet Brian and Jan Halls of Worthing Astronomers, a thriving club for enthusiasts. With 250 members, no fees and an ethos of practicality, the group has no committee and is run by mutual consensus. “We are run by members for members,” said Brian. “We have technical workshops and everything is very hands on.” Jan suggested that one of the best ways to begin is to buy or borrow a good pair of binoculars and a simple night sky guide from the library. Although there are now star map apps, enabling you to fling your phone at the sky and see what lies where, it’s more satisfying to be able to navigate your own way around the sky.

With binoculars trained on the cratered edge of a waxing or waning moon, you can see plenty of detail. With a modest telescope and a decent eyepiece, the sight is compelling. For my own scope, I decided to splash out on dual eyepieces rather than squinting through one eye; it gives a natural three-dimensional sight and isn’t quite so tiring for long viewing. The first time I saw craters spring out in sharply focused detail, I began to understand why astronomy can become so absorbing: the skies literally begin to open up the further you can see. As light has to travel from each star to reach our eyes, the vast distances involved mean that we are looking back in time to the moment the light left that particular star. Considering some stars are many thousands of light years away, we are looking at something that sent out that light from the remote past and could potentially no longer exist! I had a lesson in visual time travel when Brian pointed out Arcturus, a red giant star that emitted the light that represents it today in 1976, a year that was memorable for a long and burning summer. Arcturas is in the constellation

Bootes, part of which contains novae called the ‘Blaze Star’, which is visible with a small telescope. The light we see from this ‘star’ left it 1,800 years ago, when the Roman Empire was in decline. Brian and Jan house their main telescope in an observatory they built from a simple galvanised shed. “With a bit of imagination, you can set up quite cheaply,” advised Brian. With a small heater and a low light source the observatory was snug, with plenty of space to swing the floor-mounted telescope. Smaller portable scopes can be carried or driven to darker skies far from streetlights or the orange glow that rises above towns. Brian’s group has observation sessions on Worthing seafront or the darker skies above Goring Gap, where people can try scopes belonging to group members and get a feel for what may suit them best. continued on next page

One of Brian’s passions is solar viewing and photography; highly specialised filters can be fitted to the telescope to enjoy safe views of the sun’s surface. Looking at some of the stunning images utilising filters and more specialised solar telescopes, the sun can be seen in staggering detail – gigantic sunspots 20,000 miles across and solar prominences shooting from the surface as matter becomes caught in magnetic fields. Although the novice astronomer is likely to start with moon watching, it’s possible to reach out into our solar system with a modest ‘scope and view the rings of Saturn, Jupiter with its four moons, and Venus, which has clearly visible moonlike phases. Brian’s most memorable astronomical sights have included four solar eclipses and a rare sighting of the Aurora Borealis (or Northern Lights) from Sussex. He travelled to China, Libya and Zimbabwe to catch the eclipses and described the moon’s shadow racing across the earth before the sun was momentarily obliterated by our tiny satellite.

should outshine anything in the night sky At the end of November into December, Comet Ison should outshine anything in the night sky. I remember sitting mesmerised on a plane returning from the US in 1997 as Comet Hale Bopp appeared like a bright white jewel, tail streaming behind it like a rocket. Witnessing such sights is a reminder that we live in a constantly changing, evolving corner of the galaxy, and astronomy is a way of connecting with our place in the universe. Astrophotography is gaining in popularity since the arrival of low-cost digital SLR cameras. The chairman of the Adur Astronomical Society, Robin Durant, uses multiple exposures to create incredibly detailed photos of nebulae, galaxies and the moon. As a water colour artist, he has a strong appreciation of colour and wanted to show friends the colours visible by using a camera that appear monotone when viewed through a scope. Adaptors can physically screw the camera onto the telescope and some surprisingly clear results can be obtained. I tried photographing the moon by this method; detail is sharp but I found the best result came from creating a short film showing the moon skimming across the telescope’s view as earth rotates. With manual settings engaged, exposure times can be set from seconds to minutes, making sure that enough light is there to capture the image. Robin’s multiple exposures, stacked by computer software create rich, detailed images that open up normally invisible parts of the universe. It’s important to keep vibration to a minimum; even a slight wind can cause movement to a normally sturdy tripod, and the effect is magnified because of the reach of the telescope. Using the self-timer button helps to eliminate vibration but continued on next page

traffic, trains and breeze all contribute to a softer image. Robin uses a RAW format to capture his images which, although memory hungry, provides the best data for processing. Sussex is spoilt for choice when it comes to astronomy groups. Worthing Astronomers and the nearby Worthing Astronomical Society are joined by groups in Crawley, Shoreham, and Horsham. Crawley Astronomical Society has been active for 50 years and the late Sir Patrick Moore was one of the founder members. Enthusiasm for astronomy is obviously not in short supply in our part of the world and there is plenty of support for the curious novice or simply someone who wants to dip a toe by going to an observation night. Astronomers like to share the beauty in the night sky and will give invaluable advice when choosing and using a first telescope. Just sometimes, the skies throw open a complete surprise when you least expect it. On holiday in Wales last week, I saw a meteor so bright I felt I could reach out and touch it, hanging for seconds, long tail streaking out behind a searing white body. Open the door and look up to the night sky this autumn, you may be surprised at what you will see.

Lindfield Arts Festival The Lindfield Arts Festival today revealed that big plans are already underway for the fifth Festival in 2014, which sees three local friends teaming up to take over as the Arts Festival Directors. Marian Cameron, Esther Featherstone and Lorna Falkner, inspired by their passion for the local community, have chosen the theme of Quintessential Lindfield which will focus on portraying Lindfield life by time travelling from the past through to the future. The widely anticipated programme of arts events will also move from May to 12-14 September 2014 in response to residents’ feedback. The theme will be split over the three days with a different period of time inspiring the exhibitions and activities: Friday will focus on life in the village over the past; Saturday on the present day life in the village; Sunday on what the future life will potentially look like Life in Lindfield during each time period will be explored through inspirational art and craft exhibitions, workshops and unique activities ranging from classic cars and motorbikes, musical extravaganzas, theatrical productions, sensational dance performances and more! National Gardens Scheme We have been promoting gardens opening for the National Gardens Scheme in Mid Sussex this summer and now, as the season draws to a close for 2013, the NGS would like to thank their many visitors, who have ventured out in all weathers to see the gardens. East & Mid Sussex NGS have had a great year with good visitor numbers across the many and varied gardens. This, despite the poor weather in June – historically the busiest garden visiting month! It looks likely that £120,000 will be raised, with some monies still to come in for the season. As a taste of anticipation for 2014, there will be 28 new and 12 revived gardens opening in the 2014 line-up. Nine brand new, single opening gardens, and 19 new ones opening as

part of an existing group or in a brand new group! So there will be plenty of new venues to see next year in addition to your old favourites! Remember they can all be found in the Yellow Book which can be pre-ordered now. Check www.ngs.org.uk for details.

Award-winning local cinema Building on the success of being named Best New Film Society 2012 by the British Federation of Film Societies (BFFS), the Hurstpierpoint Film Society is celebrating more awards this year, in recognition of their contribution to the local community. They gained a Distinction for Film Programming and a Commendation for Marketing & Publicity in the 2013 BFFS awards in September, held at the British Film Institute in London. Chairman David Saitch said: “We are delighted to have been recognised for our efforts once again. The British Federation of Film Societies is the umbrella organisation for the Community Cinema initiative, with over 600 member groups, some of which have been in operation for decades, and to have received awards, particularly the Distinction

LOCAL for our Film Programming, while still a comparatively fledgling organisation, is fantastic achievement on which we hope to build.” The Hurstpierpoint Film Society burst onto the local entertainment scene in September 2011 with an exciting mix of quality films for the whole community. Films are shown on the big screen, with full surround sound, at the purposebuilt Players Theatre, offering the real cinema experience at sensible prices. Together with a licenced bar, low cost refreshments and homemade cakes, it’s an unbeatable way to spend an evening right here on the village high street. Night Stop Do you have a spare room? Would you help a local 16/17 year old? Jay, 17, had been homeless for three months, ‘hiding’ in the park at night and sofa surfing when he could. He is an intelligent, well-mannered, shy young man, always eager to please, which can sometimes mean that knowing what he really needs is not obvious. Sussex Nightstop is a local charity providing emergency and temporary accommodation for 16/17 year olds at risk of homelessness. The scheme relies

entirely on the support of local people who no longer see their spare room as just a room, but as somewhere that a young person can sleep safely. Volunteers provide a secure private room, an evening meal, breakfast, a homely environment and a listening ear or quiet space. In exchange for this they are fully trained, reference checked and offered 24-hour support. All young people using the service complete a full personal and risk assessment. Nightstop covers volunteers’ expenses in the short term and organises a rental payment for longer placements. After his first few nights with Nightstop, Ben told me that his mates had asked him what he was doing that evening – he told them he was going home! Zumba Dance Off! On Saturday 2nd November, Jigsaw (South East) will be holding a sponsored zumbathon to raise much-needed funds to support grieving families and those facing the loss of a loved one through serious illness. The event, organised by volunteer fundraiser and Friend of Jigsaw Laura McTaggart, will take place at Chequer Mead Arts Centre, East Grinstead, and is open to all. No previous experience necessary and children and young people are all invited. Janey Treharne, Jigsaw (South East) Business & Development Manager said: “We are a local charity and, as with most small charities, we do not receive any statutory funding and are

dependent on grants, donations and fundraising. “Our service provides support to children who have lost a close family member and those who have a family member with a serious illness. It can be a very confusing and emotionally difficult time for children, they are often bewildered and frightened and find it difficult to talk to adults who may also be having a difficult time. We provide these families with support and guidance and a safe place to talk about their emotions and encourage them to make memories whilst meeting others in the same situation.” The event is held from 10am to 1pm, with a half-hour warmup and introduction, at The Wagg Studio, Chequer Mead Arts Centre. Dressing up is encouraged, though not essential. The cost is £10 per team to enter. Contact 01342 313895 or visit www.jigsawsoutheast.org.uk.

Cuckfield Pet & Country Store is an

independently owned family business. Formerly known as Sparks Farm Shop, the store specialises in all that’s good about country living.

All your country needs There was a friendly buzz in the shop when I visited. Owners Peter and Sally Trump and their son James were busily advising customers, carrying purchases to the car and bantering with regulars, proving that family business means committed personal service. I asked them about their secret, their advantage over larger competitors. “When I go to a shop, I expect first-class service, so that’s what we provide, without question,” Peter didn’t hesitate to answer. Having always lived locally and traded from their premises near Whitemans Green for 10 years, the family has a strong connection to the area. “We’re small enough to care but large enough to cope,” his wife Sally added. “We go the extra mile, deliver free locally and have a loyalty scheme. If something isn’t on the shelf, we’ll order it for the next day.” Contrary to popular opinion, pet food isn’t always cheaper at the supermarket. “We get deals not available to the bigger chains and that makes us very competitive indeed,” says Sally. Cuckfield Pet & Country Store stocks its own premium range of top quality dog and cat food alongside many other brands. There’s also horse feed

and a huge range of wild bird food including 25kg sacks of peanuts and feeders of all shapes and sizes. The store has everything you could possibly wish for to keep our beloved pets happy, fed and comfortable, including Englishmade and machine washable dog and cat beds, blankets, treats, toys and collars. The Natural Instincts range of raw frozen pet food is proving exceptionally popular with clients who want the best for their animals. Sally, Peter and James are keen supporters of the wider community too. At their recent Big Dogs’ Breakfast fundraising event held at the store, nearly £1,000 was raised with dog grooming, portrait pictures, quizzes and a raffle, in addition to serving 200 breakfasts. All proceeds went to Dogs for the Disabled, the national charity which trains young dogs for people with physical disabilities. Of course, it’s not just pets who are provided for. “We sell free-range eggs, honey and locally baked cakes, all popular with customers looking to reduce their food miles,” smiled James.

The Trump family has a keen understanding of country living and how requirements change with the seasons. As Peter explained, “we have compost in the summer and plants and pots for the growing season. For the winter, we stock coal, logs and gas.” Attractive, economical indoor Calor Gas heaters are popular for quick, easy heat while barbeques and patio heaters are ideal for cooler autumn temperatures, extending the outdoor season long past the summer. Christmas trees will be available from the first week in December. With easy parking off the main Staplefield Road, it’s far easier than struggling on a yellow line in town. And since Peter and James insist on carrying everything to your car, shopping at the Cuckfield Pet & Country Store couldn’t be more convenient.

Moths:

Elephant Hawk Moth

Come into the light Next time you see a moth, don’t squish it! Instead, take time to appreciate its uniqueness and learn more about the species. Beautiful. Amazing. Romantic. Many people will find it hard to use these words to describe the brown, drab insects that repeatedly batter themselves against our kitchen windows on warm evenings. But take time to learn more about our moths and you’ll find that they’re far from dull – they’re just butterflies with an image problem. There isn’t any real difference between butterflies and moths. Butterflies come out in the day – but so do some moths. Butterflies have blobby antennae – but so do some moths. No matter what difference you try and find between them, there’s always a moth to prove you wrong. The truth is that butterflies are moths and moths are butterflies. They are all part of the same insect order (Lepidoptera) and it is only us that have imposed a difference. Sussex is a great place to find these amazing insects. We are blessed with a variety of habitats: heaths, woodland, coasts, downland, fields and gardens. The caterpillars of each moth species feeds on specific plants, and the great diversity of plant life found in Sussex has given rise to a great diversity of wonderful moths.

Throughout history, the moths of Sussex have beguiled and entranced us. Victorians were obsessed with collecting them and men travelled to Sussex from across Britain to hunt moths. Armed with gas-powered lanterns, nets and extravagant moustaches, they descended on Sussex in hordes, capturing moths and pinning them in serried ranks in polished oak cabinets. These days, people are content to enjoy our wildlife in its natural habitat, and those who study moths use moth traps. These traps are basically a big bucket, a funnel and an extremely bright light to attract the moths, which are then studied and released unharmed. The reason moths are attracted to light is a mystery and, despite many theories, we’ve never got to the bottom of it. Nevertheless, a bright moth trap in a dark woodland on a warm summer evening can attract hundreds of moths. And in my experience, it can also attract the Police, ravers looking for a party or strange people searching for a crashed UFO!

Not all of our moths come out in the evening. Many of our most beautiful species fly in the sunshine. If you walk over the South Downs on a summer’s day, you will see the red and black Burnet moths or, if you’re lucky, the metallic green Foresters. In your garden, a nectar-rich flower bed may be buzzed by a Hummingbird Hawk moth, a migrant visitor from the continent that looks exactly like its tiny, tropical namesake. One of the greatest misconceptions about our moths is that they are all rather dull. Admittedly, a lot of them are brown, but even these moths have intricate patterns on their wings. Yet many others are incredibly colourful insects that give our finest looking butterflies a run for their money. Our

Many moths are incredibly colourful and give our finest butterflies a run for their money. predecessors’ admiration for these insects lives on in their evocative, romantic names. Moth names read like poetry: True-Lovers Knot, Merveille du Jour, Flame Brocade, Peach Blossom, Ruby Tiger, Flame Shoulder, Heart and Dart, Autumnal Rustic, Feathered Gothic, Marbled Coronet, Satin Lutestring, Pretty Chalk Carpet... One of the most colourful of our moths is the day-glo Elephant Hawk moth. It’s an incredible bright pink moth, which would look more at home in Hawaii than Hassocks. It’s not at all rare, and I guarantee that in the summer you’ll all have these pink elephants zipping around your gardens. The Emperor Moth is one of our largest and most impressive species. The female Emperor Moth emits a strong perfume, which literally wafts across Sussex. Any male Emperors in the area – and they could be as far as five miles from the female – can pick up www.sussexliving.com

this scent on their feathered antennae and follow the pheromone to locate her. It’s incredible to think that a female Emperor Moth at Devil’s Dyke could lure in a male Emperor from Burgess Hill train station! And these are just some of 2,500 species living in Britain – I could go on and on about the others. The Burnished Brass has shining, metallic wings. The Mother Shipton has the face of a witch on its wings. The Waved Umber has the face of Des Lynam on its wings! The Buff-Tip looks like a birch twig. Ghost Moths gather to dance in groups in the moonlight. The Lappet looks like a cross between a Cornish pasty and a shrew. And don’t get me started on the Lobster moth! Of these 2,500 species, only about five species have caterpillars that will munch a hole in your cardigan. Moths are important pollinators for plants in our gardens and in the countryside; they form an important link in the food chain. Moths themselves support our bat population and moth caterpillars are vital food for young birds. But it is loss of their habitats that has really had an effect on our moths. These wonderful creatures are in decline, the overall number of moths having decreased by 40% since 1968. 60 species became extinct in Britain in the 20th century. Among these were some moths that Sussex should be proud of. The Lewes Wave was lost in 1961, the Brighton Wainscot vanished more recently. And don’t mention the Sussex Emerald – it’s now only found in Kent!

There are two seasons associated with tree

and shrub planting:

spring and late autumn.

gaRdening

To us humans, spring seems the nicest planting time. There’s an overwhelming temptation to rush to the garden centre on the first sunny day in April and purchase a carload of plants, then spend the afternoon in a frenzy of digging, before possibly spending the evening at the local hospital, having ice packs applied by an overworked and unsympathetic A&E nurse. However, spring is a dangerous time for a young plant. Transplanted into dry-ish soil, just as it’s bursting into leaf, it must also cope with wildly fluctuating temperatures, perhaps going from a light frost at dawn to 20°C by mid-afternoon. Warmer, longer days trigger the plant’s natural inclination to grow quickly, but shortage of moisture and insufficient roots induce plant stress. That’s why so many spring plantings succumb.

Blooming Times

November may seem dank and dreary to you, but

to trees and shrubs, it’s the season of opportunity.

26

SuSSex Living november 2013

November may seem dank and dreary to you, but to trees and shrubs, it’s the season of opportunity. The soil is moist from autumnal rain. Cooler, more consistent temperatures mean less stress, and the ground hasn’t frozen yet, allowing roots to spread into enticing damp soil before going dormant. The main rule of planting anything is: ‘First Choose Your Site’. We’ve all done it, trailing a bare-rooted thing around the garden all morning, stopping only to make three cups of coffee and pop out for the Sunday papers. By lunchtime, that expensive plant that once bore multiple stems and roots now resembles a desiccated three-pronged fork. The trick is to make the plant think it hasn’t been transplanted at all. Decide on the planting position beforehand and dig a proper hole. There is much to be written about digging holes; suffice to say that, if done properly, it’s an art form. Many trees and shrubs will outlive us, so give them a proper start in life – a casual scrape in the ground using a coal shovel is not remotely good enough. Plants are highly sensitive to changes in soil level, so make sure you re-plant at the correct depth. If in doubt, examine a stem carefully and see where it changes colour: green indicates exposure to light. A sudden darkening of the stem shows the point at which it dived underground. When making a hole, roughen up the sides and bottom. Heavy clay has a tendency to form a smooth, watertight ‘sump’. Backfill the hole with garden soil mixed with compost and a handful of general purpose fertiliser, making sure you tread the soil in well around the roots. Then water, water, water – even if it’s raining. A thick mulch of organic material will help lock in moisture and a handful of snowdrops added to the top few inches of soil will make an early display that’ll look better with every passing year.

Perhaps more surprisingly, however, are the gifts and toys including films, music, greetings cards, candles and hand creams. Now, there are also Christmas crackers, cards and wrapping paper. at your service Duncan ellis founded ellis Motors on his own in 2004. nine years later, the company has three

technicians, an apprentice and a receptionist; their premises are twice the size and include a brand new specialist MOT bay.

Against the background of an exceptionally competitive industry and through a deep recession, the company has grown very steadily, so I asked Duncan where all the customers were coming from. “We started with friends, and friends of friends,” he grinned “but then I found that genuinely talking to the clients about their vehicles – properly explaining what needed doing, if you like – brought more and more customers. Especially since we’ve always been fair and reasonable with our costs.” This made perfect sense to me, particularly now that cars have become so complicated, but I think the fact that Duncan was an AA patrolman before setting out on his own might also have had something to do with it. Certainly, I can’t think of anyone I’d trust more with my car. Ellis Motors deal with most popular makes and models and offer both interim servicing and full regular services, repairs,

diagnostic fault finding and, of course, MOTs in their new purpose-built bay. When Duncan took me for a stroll round the workshops I commented that it was so neat and tidy that the new bay looked more like A&E than MOT. He laughed and said, “well, we’re hoping it’s going to do a lot of business, especially with our introductory special offer of MOTs for only £30. You can get a voucher on our website.” With free car collection and drop-off available for those customers who need it, and with servicing costs from as little as £79.95, this certainly seems to be ‘a garage run with its customers in mind’, as one happy client wrote on the web. And the happiness seems to extend to the entire team at Ellis Motors who include Lizzie Nokes, the busy receptionist, bookkeeper and general factotum, and the technicians Matthew, Rob and Amy (yes, a girl who loves working with cars!).

A garage run with its customers in mind Air-conditioning, tyres and exhausts as well as manufacturerspecific servicing and highly professional repair work – there’s very little that isn’t covered at Ellis Motors. And if anybody still needs convincing, go to www. ellismotors.co.uk and watch Duncan explain it all on video: the mysteries of servicing, repairs and getting value for your money.

The story behind

nothing says ‘Christmas’ quite like a family visit to the local Santa’s grotto. it’s a tradition that can trace its roots all the way back to victorian england.

For most kids, the festive season wouldn’t be the same without a trip to see Father Christmas. The traditional ‘Santa’s Grotto’ experience is as central to our celebration of Yuletide as roast chestnuts and mulled wine - but how did it all begin? Thanks to family festive films like Miracle on 34th Street, most people assume that the ‘department store Santa’ is an American import. In fact, the world’s very first Christmas grotto opened in Liverpool during the winter of 1879. It was the centrepiece of a 10,000-square-feet ‘Christmas Fairyland’ display within Lewis’s Bon Marche department store, and featured a jolly Father Christmas who handed out presents to visiting children. It was around this time that Christmas began to become an important commercial event, announcing itself through the transformation of store windows and shopping streets. The Lady’s Pictorial of 1881 describes it as: “Christmas cards in almost every window, in the companionship of the attractions of the toy-seller, the wares of the draper, the irresistible temptations of the milliner, and of their more legitimate comrades in the show-cases of the stationer – from everywhere have these pretty little tokens of goodwill and kindly thoughts been peering out and seeking the attention of the passer-by.”

Every year, around 750,000 letters are posted to Santa Claus at his official address: Santa’s Grotto, Reindeerland XM4 5HQ Opening a ‘Santa’s Grotto’ was the perfect way for stores to attract more festive shoppers, and the idea quickly caught on. The year after the establishment of the Liverpool grotto, several more UK department stores hosted their own festive experiences. In 1890, a grotto opened in Brockton, Massachusetts, and by 1896 the tradition had spread as far as Australia - records show the first ‘Magic Cave’ Christmas experience opening that year on Rundle Street in Adelaide. Stores and public bodies were now competing to host the most magical grotto. Elves, animatronic continued on next page SuSSex Living november 2013

characters and even real reindeer all became commonplace adornments. Of course, all Santa’s grottos ultimately stem from the notion of an Arctic workshop, where Father Christmas and his elves spend their year making toys for children. Thanks to 19th-century artist and self-styled Santa Claus specialist Thomas Nast, this mythical place has an actual location: the magnetic North Pole. It even boasts a modern-day Canadian postcode - H0H 0H0 - and a US Postal Service ZIP code that puts it somewhere in Alaska. Every year in the UK, around 750,000 letters are posted to Santa Claus at his official Royal Mail address: Santa’s Grotto, Reindeerland, XM4 5HQ. If you include a stamped, addressed envelope with your missive and mail it before 6th December, then you should even receive a reply from Santa himself ! Of course, most kids want to do more than write to Santa - the highlight of the Christmas experience is getting the chance to sit on Father Christmas’ knee and tell him exactly what you want in your stocking come Christmas morning. There are plenty of places across Mid Sussex where you can meet Santa, from garden centres and shopping malls to farm shops, high street shops and even railway carriages. Whether you’re treating your family with a visit to Lapland this Christmas or taking them to visit your local Santa’s grotto, get ready to face that timeless question: “Mummy, Daddy - is this the real Santa?”

Super need a little help with your Christmas shopping? These bright ideas are sure to provide bags of festive inspiration… At Christmas, the world divides into people who are easy to buy gifts for and those who simply seem to have everything. Most of us will spend at least a few hours every year wandering aimlessly around the shops, trying to find inspiration for that final, impossible present. This season, though, things can be different: we’ve scoured the local area for great gift ideas, so that you don’t have to.

1. Read All About It Books make perfect stocking-fillers for all ages - but instead of picking up the latest generic page-turner, choose a topic that will tickle the receiver’s interests. Sport-obsessives will adore local author Ann Waterhouse’s selection of sporting titles. Sue Porter’s Guide to Cricket and Sue Porter’s Guide to Rugby have both been recently updated by Ann and her illustrator friend Amanda Stiby to take account of recent updates in the sports, and are locally available at The Mint House bookshop in Hurstpierpoint as well as online at www.sueportersguides.com. Tracking down a title that traces the history and heritage of your local area is another way to give a truly personalised present. For kids, of course, the timeless Winnie-the-Pooh books are based in the Ashdown Forest; and most of the stories about Pooh and his cuddly friends can be linked to real places in and around the Mid Sussex area.

2. Get Crafty Feeling the pinch this Christmas? There’s no need to spend a fortune on pre-packaged gifts – instead, why not consider making your own? Homemade cosmetics are simple to put together and smell delicious. For the ultimate Lavender Bath Bomb, mix three parts sodium bicarbonate with one part citric acid and one part Epsom salts, mixing the ingredients until powdery. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil, sweet almond oil and violet colouring, then take a bath bomb mould and line it with dried lavender. Fill the mould with the sodium bicarbonate mixture, leave it to dry for 24 hours on greaseproof paper and voilà – the perfect gift for girls young and old. If you’re keen to create something a little more lasting, then there are plenty of easy knitting patterns on the internet that even complete beginners can attempt. Snoods are one of the simplest garments to knit and make a luxurious gift if based on silk, cashmere or alpaca wool. For men, try your hand at a classic scarf, or hone your sewing skills by whipping up a simple beanbag in pretty fabric. Kids will adore these as well.

3. A Kiss and a Promise Happiness comes not from things but from experiences, according to a series of studies conducted by Cornell University. Researchers found that experiences continue to provide happiness through memories, while the initial joy of acquiring a new object fades quickly. With that in mind, vouchers make ideal Christmas gifts. From extreme sport experiences such as skydiving, hang-gliding and surfing through to singing lessons, photography workshops and paintballing sessions, this versatile present can cater to literally any interest. Many of Mid Sussex’s most upmarket hotels offer vouchers for overnight stays, dinner, afternoon teas and spa treatments. History buffs will appreciate a membership to an archaeological society or heritage trust - and for kids, zoo visits, Laser Quest days, horseriding lessons and kayaking experiences are all great options. Or why not use some of the leftover materials from your craft project, and make your own fun vouchers? A promise to take your teenage daughter clothes shopping, treat your other half to a romantic dinner or arrange a weekend break with mum is sure to light up their faces come Christmas morning.

4. Let me entertain you… If you’re keen to enjoy a lie-in on Christmas morning, there are gifts out there guaranteed to keep the kids entertained for hours. DVDs, game consoles and video games are always high on most children’s Christmas lists - but you might be surprised at how successful more traditional presents can be. Adding a craft kit, activities book, a drawing kit, Etch-a-Sketch screen or build-your-own toy pack to stockings should buy you an extra few minutes in bed. Even better, keep both kids and adults entertained with a day of festive, family-friendly fun. Look out for theatre productions and pantomimes coming to your local theatre; arrange a visit to see Santa and his reindeer; or make present opening even more exciting by organising your own Christmas treasure hunt. Other great things to do with your family over the festive period might include a trip to the ice rink, a Christmas carol singalong, a steam train ride or attending a family fun day at one of the area’s many open country houses.

5. Food, glorious food Wondering what to get the person who has everything? Everybody loves a treat for the taste buds and, fortunately, Mid Sussex is a gourmet paradise at Christmas. Most farm shops offer scrumptious hampers packed with local produce, from cheese, chutneys and cured meats to wine, beer and cider. Even better, why not individualise a hamper? With a little forward planning, it’s easy to make your own sloe gin, elderflower wine, autumn pickles and Christmas cake – add dried flowers and home-decorated candles for a truly personal touch. Gourmet experiences also make an ideal present for discerning foodies. There are plenty of cookery courses to choose from in the Mid Sussex area, and both restaurants and gastro pubs offer dinner vouchers around the Christmas period. Better still, why not treat a special someone to a wine tasting tour, and discover our delicious local vintages? Here’s to a great Christmas! SuSSex Living november 2013

David and Nicola McCarthy opened Big Life Organics in Haywards Heath six months ago, and they seem to have tapped into something we can all agree on: we want to feel good about ourselves. “Everything we sell is for a natural, long, happy, healthy life,” says David. Inside the store, you’ll find shelves packed with wholefood groceries, many from Brighton’s Infinity Foods cooperative, alongside superfresh and tasty fruit & vegetables supplied daily by Laines Organic Farm in

Cuckfield. There’s an enticing baked goods section, including delicious sourdough bread from Flint Owl Bakery in Lewes. “It’s bread like you’ve never tasted before,” says Nicola. “It’s just amazing.” Chocolate lovers like myself will be delighted to see a large choice of guilt-free treats, including the extremely delicious Booja-Booja organic chocs, Montezuma’s of Brighton, raw

vegan Conscious Chocolate from Forest Row and Henfield’s Raw Chocolate Company. The store also stocks a wide selection of organic wines and beers, with wine tastings taking place every Saturday. So far, so tempting! David tells me that Big Life Organics offer a huge range of foodstuffs to cater for most diets and eating preferences, including gluten-free and sugar-free, and everything in the shop is dairy-

free. “When you’ve eaten a plate of food, you should feel fantastic and full of energy, not bloated and tired,” he says. “That’s where we come in.” The business is founded on macrobiotic principles, which I’m told is not so much a diet but a whole way of life. It’s all about achieving balance, an inner equilibrium that enables us to live life to the full. Understanding what food we, as individuals, need to eat to feel good is an integral part of the process. David goes on to explain that “on the most basic level, it’s about local foods our ancestors would have eaten, and there’s a strong seasonal element too. For example, there’s no way people would have had meat three times a day. Nor would they have had strawberries at Christmas; and it’s not the best way for our bodies to be nourished.” www.sussexliving.com

It occurred to me that if one were to advertise the benefits of macrobiotics, Nicola would surely be the perfect poster girl. Full of energy, clearly happy with her life and positively glowing with health and natural beauty, she is living proof of what feeling good is all about. A large section of the store is dedicated to personal care and the home. Homoeopathic remedies and Viridian nutritional supplements are popular too. Big natural beauty brands such as Dr Hauschka and REN sit alongside innovative Australian organic make-up ranges Inika and Zuii. I spotted Neal’s Yard skincare, Lavera, Faith in Nature, Green People and many others on the shelves – all wonderful natural products that you will love to put on your skin. Further along, there are useful and attractive household items including top quality German cookware from WMF and beautiful Japanese ceramics. And, as Nicola tells me, those colourful and funky BPA-free Bobble Bottles for hot and cold drinks are just flying off the shelves. “You don’t even have to be interested in food to find something you like at Big Life Organics!” she laughs. I, for one, will certainly be tempted to do a large chunk of my Christmas shopping here. With gift boxes starting from only £10 and a wide range of instantly covetable feel-good products that would make wonderful gifts, there’s something for all budgets. I’ve got my eye on a NeOM luxury organic aromatherapy candle (Moroccan Blush Rose please, in case anyone’s asking) – and they do room diffusers and handcreams too “and are sooooo popular,” smiles Nicola. Over in the corner, a large glass display case full of gorgeous silver and real crystal jewellery has caught my eye. I might have to come back another time for a closer look… “People often comment on the lovely atmosphere in the shop,” says Nicola. Indeed, the sales staff are friendly and know their stuff, not least because three of them are qualified pharmacists who have chosen to work with David and Nicola. David has a solid scientific background and is a trained pharmacist himself – which is how his personal journey towards macrobiotics began.

Instantly covetable

that would make wonderful gifts It’s a fascinating and powerful story about love, life and death, and one which he never tires of telling. “David has so much to give and he is driven by a desire to help people,” says Nicola. No wonder that David’s regular free talks on ‘How Food Can Affect Your Health’ get booked up very quickly. An experienced macrobiotic counsellor, he also offers personalised health, lifestyle and dietary consultations. Nicola’s practical cooking classes are also proving popular. This month, she’ll be giving workshops on what to do with pumpkin, how to make pickles, and she is starting another 5-week course on macrobiotic cooking.

If you’re curious to find out more about Big Life Organics, there’s a special Open Day on Saturday 16th November where everyone who is interested in healthy living will receive a very warm welcome. That’s a reason to feel good, right there!

Relax & take five

heaLth beaut y st yLe

MIRROR MIRROR MIRROR on the wall...

Slow down, relax,

breathe. it need only take a few minutes but can work wonders to restore your wellbeing.

Most women I know are accomplished multi-taskers who juggle the daily demands of career, family and housework with astonishing aplomb. But look behind the polished façade, and we’re all feeling increasingly stressed, depressed and guilty about not achieving enough. Even if you’re perfectly happy and fulfilled in your roles at work and home, do you ever make a point of just stopping? You may or may not be into yoga, mindfulness, meditation, tai chi or any number of related disciplines that are so popular now – it doesn’t really matter. Everyone has the ability to switch off from the daily hustle and bustle, and we all benefit hugely from shifting our focus to the here and now every now and then. So, where to start? If you like the idea of professional guidance, there are many classes, workshops and teachers in Mid Sussex that will help you find inner calm. Or maybe you prefer to keep it simple and just need a few effective ways to build stress relief into your daily routine? Here are five rebalancing tips you can try right now.

We all benefit from shifting our focus to the here and now every now and then. 48

SuSSex Living november 2013

Zen Zone Create your own sanctuary, a special place for relaxation. It doesn’t have to be a whole room – perhaps just an armchair by the window. Add scented candles or soothing music and just be.

Power Nap Snuggle up with a soft blanket, close your eyes and drift away. As little as 15 minutes will leave you feeling refreshed and re-energised for the rest of the day.

Just Breathe Sit up straight with your eyes closed and slowly inhale through your nose. Feel the breath rising from your belly all the way to the top of your head. Breathe out slowly through your mouth. Repeat for a few minutes to clear any tension.

Passive Yoga Lie on the floor with your bottom against the wall and your legs resting straight up. Feel the delicious stretch in your body while you let go of your mind.

Nature’s child Go outside, sit on a bench and just observe. What do you hear, see, smell? Let the wind, birdsong, flowers, leaves, trees etc wash over you while you become one with the natural world around you. To describe relaxation as the art of doing nothing is a bit of misnomer, in my view. After all, you are doing something very worthwhile indeed: you’re reconnecting with your body and mind. You’re coming home to yourself. You’re renewing your energy and finding the strength to go back out there and be the best you can be.

ANNA EMILIA HAIRDRESSERS introducing the new nail & beauty studio and Mamma Rosa Coffee Shop

Feel a million dollars... I gasped as I walked through the door. The main salon has had a refit and major refurb and no expense has been spared to create a sumptuous and sophisticated space that’s perfect for pampering. After 7 years in the business, owner Anna Emilia certainly knows what it takes to stay at the forefront of fashion, keeping everything innovative and fresh. To manage the expanding business, Laura Coppard has recently come on board as Salon Manager, with over 25 years’ experience in the hair & beauty industry. Introducing new ranges, including Moroccanoil products and Nano Keratin Blow Drying, Laura wants to build on Anna Emilia’s reputation as a fashion-conscious business, and one of the few salons offering L’Oreal INOA hair colour. Anna Emilia is thrilled to be welcoming two new members to her professional team. Senior Art Director Stephen George Webb from Toni & Guy London Kensington and Dubai specialises in men’s cutting and women’s styling and colour, as well as Nano Keratin Blow Drying. He has recently been on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch and is a regular on the Gogglebox series. Senior Art Director Emma Taylor, formerly of Toni & Guy,

brings with her a wealth of cut & blowdry experience as well as great creative energy for new styles and hair-up for weddings and parties. The new nail & beauty studio has just opened upstairs, offering a range of treatments including regular and gel OPI manicures, pedicures, foot massage and Indian head massage, as well as make-up and much more. You can even have you hair and nails done at the same time, if you wish, and bespoke packages for all occasions can always be arranged.

Tucked away at the back of Anna Emilia Hairdressers is Mamma Rosa coffee shop. Open to the public as well as clients, it serves a full range of coffees – all fairtrade and hand-roasted, of course – alongside a selection of locally hand-baked cakes. There’s even a small conservatory and walled courtyard, complete with wisteria climbing over old brick walls, where you can sit in the sunshine, or with a fleece blanket when it’s a bit colder. Why not pop in and meet the friendly team of professional hair & beauty stylists for a free consultation?

Get the Nuffield treatment Haywards Heath Hospital The public’s perception of a modern private hospital is often driven by images in the media. Recent headlines about abnormal profits in some private healthcare organisations have caused patients to think more about where they want to be treated. One private hospital provider that has set themselves apart in this marketplace is Nuffield Health.

N

uffield Health is the largest UK health charity with a network of over 200 facilities across the country including 31 private hospitals. With no shareholders or investors, they are free to invest any surplus generated back in to improving the health and wellbeing facilities available to customers. Nuffield Health is also helping to drive price transparency for self-pay patients by taking an active role in the Private Hospital Information Network (PHIN). Nuffield Healths’ hospital in Haywards Heath is now approaching its 21st birthday, and over the past 12 months has seen increasing levels of investment as the hospital continues to grow. The Hospital Director, Andrew Lennox, has been able to share why he believes that the hospital has continued to be successful in difficult economic times.

The Nursing Team “There are several elements that contribute to the success of a hospital, but to me a key factor is the positive engagement of both staff and consultants. In the Nuffield Health 2013 staff survey, the team at Haywards Heath Hospital recorded the highest engagement score in Nuffield Health Hospitals, and it is this high level of engagement that our patients continually experience and comment upon in our patient satisfaction surveys. But engagement starts with effective leaders, and I am fortunate that I have an excellent clinical leader in my team. Everyone knows that matrons make hospitals run efficiently and, above all, hygienically – and unlike other institutions, Nuffield Health has never lost sight of this. Central to our approach is our Matron, Sharon Pargeter, who is responsible for the governance processes that are at the heart of all nursing care we deliver. Sharon leads a clinical team that is passionate about the health of others and who have the energy, dedication and commitment to

54

SuSSex Living november 2013

help our customers regain their health. But our work is more than just a job to the people that work at Nuffield Health. The team is warm and empathetic towards our customers whilst focusing on their individual needs, and Sharon promotes an emphasis on patient dignity along with patient involvement in all decision making. All of this makes a real difference to the service we offer. ”

Expert Consultants Without an engaged consultant body, a hospital cannot hope to succeed. At Haywards Heath Hospital, senior consultants sit on the Medical Advisory Committee to advise Andrew on issues the hospital faces and provide a clinical review function to support Matron. “We try to work very closely with our consultants, and it is a little known fact that many of the consultants who work at the hospital are internationally recognised and leaders in their fields. For instance, Mr Jan Nawrocki (Urologist) represents the UK on the European Board of Urology; Mr Stephen Bendall (Foot and Ankle surgeon) is the President of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society; Mr Carl Hardwidge (Neurosurgeon) is the President of the European Skull Base Society; and Dr Stephen Ward (Pain Management) has recently been appointed as the Chairman of the National Institute of Clinical Evidence (NICE) group reviewing pain management guidelines. Many others have served on the exam boards for the Royal Colleges including Dr Thikra Bashir (Gynaecologist); Mr David Ricketts (Shoulder surgeon); Mr Giles Critchley (Spinal); Mr Marc Patterson (Hips and Knees); and Dr Paul Hughes (Neurology) to name but a few. All have published widely in medical journals. Many consultants such as Mr James Gibbs (hips and knees) are using improved techniques including the Enhanced Recovery programmes for Hip and Knee replacement surgery which enables patients to mobilise much more quickly after their operation.” www.sussexliving.com

Looking to the Future “2014 is set to be an exciting year for the hospital” says Andrew, “being part of the largest UK healthcare charity does enable us to focus on developing services and events that help improve outcomes and wellbeing rather than just driving commercial gain. We hope to expand our GP education programme further in 2014 and are already starting to book consultants to provide talks for GP groups. We are also looking to expand the services we offer to include kidney stone surgery. Our Private GP service is also growing, which allows the public to gain advice and examinations at the hospital in the evenings at a time more convenient to themselves. We are only a 5-7min walk from the train station, and hope to attract more commuters to the hospital – but we need to raise awareness that they can be treated locally to their home rather than relying on centres closer to their place of work.”

Education

The Patients’ Verdict

But engagement does not stop at the hospital doors; numerous consultants are actively involved with the education of consumers. For example, Mr Paul Banwell (Plastic Surgeon) and Dr Russell Emerson (Dermatologist) were speakers at the 2013 Clinical Cosmetic & Reconstructive Expo held at Olympia in October. Over the past 12 months the hospital has also run 18 education events for GP’s. The focus of these events has been to provide GP’s with tools and knowledge that can be used in the GP surgery to help them provide patients with better treatment plans and improved direction of onward referrals. Going forward into 2014, the hospital is planning public information events for a variety of topics including men’s and women’s health, the importance of skin, hip & knee replacements, and cosmetics.

These elements have combined together to provide patients with a superb experience that is reflected in the patient satisfaction scores of the hospital. These are published every month and the most recent patient survey (September 2013) shows that 100% of patients thought that their experience was “Very Good” or “Excellent” and that 100% would “Recommend” or “Strongly Recommend” the hospital to friends and family. With such a positive experience in healthcare ask your GP for a referral to Nuffield Health Haywards Heath Hospital, and get the Nuffield Treatment.

Technology The hospital has maintained its commitment to providing leading edge technologies which includes a 3.0T MRI scanner for improved prostate and spinal imaging. In 2013 to date, Nuffield Health has invested £390,000 into Haywards Heath Hospital. Purchases include radiology equipment for better spinal pain diagnosis, and camera systems for minimally invasive surgery. In our outpatient department we are in the process of installing new ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and have recently replaced our main ultrasound scanners and ECG machine. The investment does not stop at clinical equipment. The infrastructure of the hospital is being continually revised, with new boilers a recent addition that has helped to reduce the energy performance rating of the hospital from 103 down to 94. It’s good to talk Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK, with over

40,000 new diagnoses made every year. If you or someone close

to you is affected, it may help to talk to others in the same situation.

First, some hard data: It is a well known fact that about one in eight men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Older men and those with a family history of prostate cancer are more at risk. The average age for men to be diagnosed is between 70 and 74 years, but younger men can be affected too. When Jenny Stanger’s husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years ago, she found information and advice very hard to come by, with the nearest support group some distance away. It was her determination to set up a Prostate Cancer Support Group in Haywards Heath that was the driving force behind the formation of the group last year. Its first meeting in July 2012 was attended by 47 people, and any fears that nobody might come are now well and truly laid to rest. Jenny told me, “I wanted to provide a meeting place or a forum, where men affected by prostate cancer and their wives or partners could come along and exchange information and experiences. It’s really good to

be able to talk with people who are in the same situation.” And she made the obvious point that anybody who is affected in any way at all by prostate cancer is welcome to come along to the group’s regular meetings. Ian Cooper was diagnosed with prostate cancer 11 years ago and is now having intermittent treatment as required. Coincidentally, he found himself in the same Pilates group as Jenny, and when he heard about her intention to form the support group, he offered to chair it. “That first meeting really showed us that there was a need for the group,” he told me. “Many of the men came with their wives, and two women came along on their own to find out as much as they could because their partners simply wouldn’t discuss the issue.” Apparently, this is a very

common phenomenon and means that partners who want to support their loved ones can be deprived of the information they need because, generally, men won’t talk about illness and especially not about prostate problems. At the moment, the Prostate Cancer Support Group meets three times a year at the Dolphins Practice in Haywards Heath. There is one meeting in March to coincide with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month; one in the summer and one in November to go along with ‘Movember’ when men are sponsored to grow moustaches in support of Prostate Cancer UK. Guest speakers, such as the distinguished oncologist, Dr David Bloomfield, are regularly invited to attend meetings, and at the upcoming 7th November continued on next page

meeting, Dawn Hughes, a specialist nurse, will take about clinical trials. I asked Jenny how willing people were to talk about their experiences and to ask questions. “Once they realise that everything said is confidential and never leaves the room, people are quite happy to open up,” she replied. “And Ian manages the Q&A session brilliantly, so that everybody gets the opportunity to contribute.” The Support Group isn’t qualified to offer medical advice to individuals, but it does provide shared experience, reassurance and encouragement to all its members.

Hi, I’m Tom Briggs and I’m supporting Movember because it’s a great way of raising awareness of an important issue and raising funds to aid research in the fight against cancer. I actually had a bit of a scare a few years ago. I was fine, thankfully, but the tests and waiting for the results were frightening – so I am not abashed about looking silly in the name of charity or talking about the cause behind it. This will be my third year and, despite the inevitable itching that will occur from Week 3 onwards, I’m really looking forward to participating again. This year, I’m captaining a team of dad bloggers, the Love All Dads Podcast Mo Bros. We do a weekly podcast together and have decided to take on the challenge as, together, we think we can achieve more. Here’s hoping!

Do you believe that all children deserve to be nurtured, feel valued and benefit from the continuous commitment and sense of belonging that comes from being part of a family? Perhaps you could be an adoptive parent.

A family to call home What support, including financial, is available? All adopters are supported throughout the adoption process, and there is support available from a skilled and experienced team of professionals who are there for you until the child reaches the age of 18. Financial support is available for some children and families according to need. The Government is introducing an Adoption Passport to highlight any extra benefits adopters may be eligible for.

Unlike many years ago when children were ‘given up’ for adoption, nowadays adoption is used as an intervention for children in the care system. All too often, these children may have suffered neglect or abuse and need lots of love and attention. The Adoption Team at West Sussex County Council is always looking for those able to give adopted children a loving and secure family home. There is a particular need for those who might consider adopting older children, sibling groups or children with special needs. To help you understand how the process works and to dispel many misconceptions about adoption, we’ve put together some frequently asked questions.

How does the matching process work? Adoptive parents have some control over the gender, age and ethnicity of the child they wish to adopt. Where a match is available, parents are then given background information on the child and meet all those involved in the child’s life, before meeting the child and gradually taking over their care.

How does adoption differ from fostering? When a child is adopted, they lose all legal ties to their birth family; the new family takes full legal responsibility for the child. Fostered children remain the responsibility of the local authority. Who is eligible to adopt? West Sussex has an open and inclusive approach to adoptive parents. Adoption Social Worker, Ben Albery explains: “There are few barriers to adopting a child. For example, you need to pass an enhanced CRB check and be able to provide a child with their own bedroom.” How long does the assessment and approval process take? The Government has recently introduced new legislation to speed up the approval process, with a target time of six months (unless there are exceptional circumstances). Once you have registered an interest in adoption you will be contacted by the Adoption Team to explore your enquiry. The process is designed to check your suitability and help you decide if adoption is right for you. If you decide to formally apply, you will start Stage 1 of the process, which involves preparation and training, homework and an agreement to start checks and references. Following this, a decision will be made as to whether you can proceed to Stage 2, which involves home study visits and completion of a report which will be presented to the West Sussex County Council adoption panel.

Is there continued contact with the birth family? “There is usually some form of contact with the birth family,” says Ben. “This could be indirect or direct, but it will have been decided in a court of law, according to the best interests of the child.”

are you eligible to be an adoptive parent? most people are. The main thing is your desire to make a lifelong commitment to raising a child within your family. Other than that, YOU CAN BE: YOU DO NEED TO: any age

have a spare bedroom

any religion

be in good health

any ethnicity

be checked by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS, formerly CRB) – individual circumstances are considered regarding past offences

heterosexual, gay, lesbian, transgender unemployed

YOU DON’T HAVE TO: own your own home have children of your own be married or in a relationship

be able to take 12 months’ adoption leave to bond with your child – this is a statutory right with 9 months paid and 3 unpaid leave

If you are considering adoption, please contact the Adoption Team on 0330 2227775 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/adoption for information. Alternatively, why not attend one of the monthly Adoption Surgeries being held throughout the county?

The best start in life

If you’re looking for a small and friendly school, which will nourish and nurture your child with fantastic opportunities and an excellent quality of education, look no further than Tavistock & Summerhill.

As you might expect at a school with small class sizes, where every child has his or her individual learning style analysed and a personal learning plan put in place, the quality of education at Tavistock & Summerhill is exceptional. “We’re a small school and get to know all the children really well,” smiles Head Teacher, Andy Giles. As a non-selective school, Tavistock & Summerhill can accommodate children with varying educational needs. Recently the school introduced a rigorous programme of extension activities, but can also cater for those who may need additional learning help. A year on from my last visit, it is clear that the children and staff are thriving at this friendly and down-to-earth school, which really does feel like one big happy family. This has been helped by a number of new initiatives and developments, designed to further improve the learning experience of the children. “At this age, we want to expose the children to all sorts of opportunities to help them find and develop interests and talents which make for rounder human beings,” Andy tells me. “So often, it can

be these extra curricular activities that inform and improve their performance in core subjects.” This holistic approach means that all children do Art, Games, Drama, ICT and Design & Technology and every child is involved in school plays. Music is also very important; children in Year 3 get the opportunity to play a selection of different instruments each term. Andy is thrilled with their progress. “I’d like every child in the school to play an instrument and our music programme has fired the enthusiasm of many of our children to take up something they want to learn to play on a more formal basis.” The upper years also benefit from Life Skills, taught on Friday afternoons, and this has been extremely popular. Each half of a term focuses on an activity, climbing being the current one; children are taught the basics of climbing, along with an understanding of the safety aspects and the importance of leadership and teamwork. These opportunities are not just the preserve of the main

school. Children at The Walled Garden Nursery take part in onsite Swimming, Music, French, Cookery and PE lessons, along with the chance to mix with those from the Lower School. In fact, mixing across year groups is something that all pupils

We want to expose the children to all sorts of opportunities to help them develop into rounded human beings. enjoy and the benefits in terms of their overall development and confidence are clear to see. If you’re choosing a school for your child, you are warmly invited to come and experience Tavistock & Summerhill School for yourself. Open Mornings are held throughout the year but visitors are welcomed at any time.

Ditchling

Walk

Starting from the centre of the village, don’t be put off by the steep climb up to Ditchling Beacon. Once you reach the South Downs Way, you’ll be rewarded with glorious views of the Sussex Weald.

From the car park, return to Lewes Road and turn right, shortly bearing left along The Fieldway. At the end of the track, follow a narrow path out to East End Lane where you should turn right to rejoin Lewes Road. Cross the road to Nye Lane opposite and follow this ancient track for a little over a mile to Underhill Lane, ignoring all turnings off to your left and right. On reaching the lane, turn left and, after about 150 metres, turn right on a signed bridleway, to Wick Farm Bostal. The word ‘Bostal’ refers to a steep path, particularly over the Downs, and occurs elsewhere in the area. Follow the obvious track steeply uphill, stopping to pause now and again to admire the superb views northwards across the Sussex Weald that begin to open up on your left. The path eventually joins the South Downs Way opposite the car park at Ditchling Beacon. Cross the road and keep to the right of the car park and follow the South Downs Way westwards. This is a lovely ridge walk with extensive views both to the north and south, and the prominent hill in front of you is Wolstonbury, visited on a previous walk.

In about a mile, you will pass Burnt House Pond on your right, which is a restored Dew Pond. Dew Ponds are artificial and are normally sited on hilltops for the purpose of providing water for livestock. Go through a gate and carry on, and before reaching the next gate, look for a gate on your right. Leave the main track to go through it and on to open downland. Head for a cluster of gorse bushes, and pick up the obvious track ahead which contours downhill to the valley below. This track is known as Burnthouse Bostal, and is so named after a house situated at the bottom, which was destroyed by fire many years ago, before any of us were born. At the bottom, the track passes between fields to join Underhill Lane. Turn right along this lane, and after about 200 metres, go left over a stile on a signed path. Follow along a left-hand field edge to go through a pair of metal gates with farm buildings continued on next page SuSSex Living november 2013

on your right. Cross the field to another gate, which you should go through and walk alongside a righthand field edge. After the curiously named Molehilly Shaw, ignore the path off to your right and cross the middle of the large field ahead to pass through a gap in the hedgerow. Bear slightly right towards a housing estate and go over a stile and footbridge and follow a narrow path between houses out to Neville Flats. Turn left and, at Neville Bungalows, follow a narrow path indicated by a ‘No Cycling’ sign to a crossroads at the junction of Clayton Road and Beacon Road. Walk up South Street to the crossroads in the centre of Ditchling village, turning right into Lewes Road to return to the village hall car park.

Celebrate Christmas in style this year! Local hostelries have begun sending me emails about the approach of Christmas. Apparently, the demand for food, drink, funny hats and crackers is such that if I do not book my table(s) immediately, then it is likely that I will be disappointed. From the urgency of their communications, it would appear that festive eating out begins about six weeks before Christmas Day. Funnily enough, this used to be completely true if you worked in an advertising agency, but I suspect no more. Even so, the traditional office party is still a big occasion and, if you can stand in the background, it is a much neglected spectator sport. Nobody’s career has ever been enhanced by going to the Office Christmas Party. Halfway through the evening, it can seem important to have a friendly word with the boss and tell him where he’s going wrong. This is rarely well received. Commit some minor indiscretion, like proposing marriage to the tea lady, and it will be common knowledge amongst all your colleagues by the time you get to work the following day. And getting home used to be tricky, because very jolly Christmas parties would arise spontaneously in the buffet cars of the evening commuter trains from Victoria. Normally staid city types would be found drinking champagne and singing carols as they blasted through Redhill at 80 miles an hour. This party season ran for the best part of a week, and it was often responsible for wives receiving pathetic late-night phone calls from husbands marooned in Cooden Beach, when they should have got off at Haywards Heath. Family celebrations are much safer and more joyful occasions, if only because the potential hazards can be anticipated from previous experience. For example, a quiz between courses sets an even pace for Christmas Dinner. It reduces indigestion and allows the cooks time to enjoy the meal with everybody else. The trick is to stop it becoming too competitive. Children can eat separately on wallpapering tables, under which you’ve placed industrial grade polythene to protect the carpet. That way, the adults get to have conversation and the kids get to have noisy, messy chaos. It’s a win-win, as they say.

Choose from a range of festive lunch, dinner, party and afternoon tea menus from £20.50 For Christmas parties of 10+ the organiser dines free.

Food Glorious Food The American writer, Minister and inventor of ‘positive thinking’, norman vincent Peale, put it beautifully: ‘Christmas waves a magic

wand over the world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.’ But it doesn’t just happen by itself.

Christmas Pudding Traditionally, Christmas Pudding is made on Stir up Sunday, the last Sunday before Advent, which this year falls on 24th November. An essential British tradition, it is said to have been introduced by Queen Victoria’s (German) husband Albert. The term comes from the opening words of the collect

for the day in the Book of Common Prayer of 1549: Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Everyone in the family helps to stir the pudding mixture, and while they are doing it, they must make a wish. The stirring is done ‘from East to West’ in honour of the Three Wise Men. There are 13 ingredients in the pudding (to represent Jesus and his apostles), and in go a silver coin (or an old fashioned threepenny bit), a ring and a thimble. On Christmas Day, whoever finds the coin will have wealth, the finder of the ring will soon be married, and good luck will come to whoever finds the thimble. The flaming brandy poured over a Christmas Pudding is symbolic of Christ’s Passion.

Nuts

Stir the Christmas pudding mixture ‘from East to West’,

in honour of the Three Wise Men.

Nuts are something else you can sort out early. An old friend of mine had the idea that nobody actually really eats nuts; they just like having them around to play with at Christmas. “Just buy some this year and when no one has eaten them by the end of December, put them away until next Christmas,” he said. It’s a plausible idea but as long as you choose your nuts carefully and provide enough efficient nutcrackers, they will, I assure you, go like hot cakes. Remember that peanuts aren’t actually nuts at all, so forget them. Instead, go nuts for cashews, cobnuts, brazils, macademias, walnuts, almonds and pecan nuts! Incidentally, in my view, nuts don’t go with raisins. Or in salads. continued on next page

Mince Pies Festive celebrations, including having Mince Pies and Christmas Puddings, were reportedly banned by Oliver Cromwell as part of his efforts to tackle gluttony. It has been claimed that eating a mince pie on Christmas Day is still illegal in England. And that’s not the only myth. Eat as many mince pies as you can, starting on Christmas Eve. Apparently, the number you manage to consume will determine just how much luck you will have next year. And remember, whatever you do, don’t cut them with a knife as this will cut your luck. Instead, simply bite into them or break them with your fingers.

4 green (under ripe) mangoes, peeled, pit removed and cut into strips

1 teaspoon of cumin seed

1 (3cm) piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and chopped

4 cardamom seeds

3 cloves of garlic, peeled

5 cloves

500g of caster sugar

250ml of cider vinegar

1 teaspoon of salt

5 black peppercorns, crushed

2 cardamom pods 1 (7cm) cinnamon stick

½ a teaspoon of dried red chilli flakes 1. Using a pestle and mortar, crush the ginger and garlic until they’ve become a smooth paste.

2. Stir the mixture into a large saucepan with the mangoes.

Mango Chutney One seemingly inevitable consequence of Christmas eating is the huge amount of leftover food. So bring on the pickle! Bring on the chutney! It could be my faulty memory of happy childhood curries with my parents, and my father’s stories about being brought up in India, but I reckon that since my childhood the mango bits in shop-bought chutney have got noticeably smaller and fewer. Luckily, there’s an easy, home made solution: If you make chutney at home, you can be sure about how many pieces of mango there are, and of their size. It also makes an excellent and unusual Christmas present, perhaps for unexpected guests or people who at the last moment, you remember you’ve forgotten.

3. Add the sugar, salt, chilli flakes, cumin seed,

cardamom pods and seeds, cinnamon stick and cloves.

4. Stir to blend, then cover the pot and leave it out overnight at room temperature.

5. Next day, put the saucepan over a medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture begins to thicken in about half an hour.

6. Stir in the vinegar and peppercorns and cook for another minute.

7. Cool and serve.

sewing for hospices Made and Making, The Workroom, Unit 3 Turner Dumbrells, Dumbrell Court Road, Ditchling, BN6 8GT Come and join us to sew for hospices. We are providing simple sewn bags to St Catherines Hospice in Crawley and St Michaels Hospice in Hastings. The bags are given to patients for a variety of reasons: some help with the continual administering of drugs and others help store emergency supplies. This will be a great way to do something to help someone. There’s no money involved, just a little time. Each bag will be finished with a nametag saying that you made it and hopefully a little message from you too. Machines and materials will be supplied on the day together with tea, coffee and biscuits to keep the energy levels high and the machines busy. (If you do have any spare fabrics from a stash at home that you may be prepared to donate please do bring that along too, it will be very welcome). The first target is to provide 100 bags to each hospice. Contact Sarah@madeandmaking, 07967 819540 www.facebook.com/ madeandmaking or visit www. madeandmaking.co.uk/sewingforhospices.

talking heads by alan bennett Players Theatre, 147 High Street, Hurstpierpoint, BN6 9PU Hurstpierpoint Players present Talking Heads by Alan Bennett. Alan Bennett is well known for the delightful way he combines a deep understanding of human emotions with some of the funniest lines ever written. These stories are no exception, the suburban normality of the world his characters inhabit belies their lives of secrets, revelations, fears, crimes and passions. They tell their stories, and in doing so reveal more than they know of the humour, passion and sadness of their lives.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, RUSH portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed--handsome English playboy, Hunt, and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. business to business

A united commercial voice for Burgess Hill

Trade associations have never been busier and that’s certainly the case with the Burgess Hill Business Parks Association (BHBPA). Every Sussex business can benefit

from a helping hand, no matter whether they’re a multinational or a sole trader. With figures showing that around 90% of businesses will not reach their tenth anniversary – that’s if they even survive the first 12 months – it’s good to know that together they can assist each other in this tough economic climate. The BHBPA is gaining new members all the time, as directors and proprietors realise the benefits of sharing problems with those who have been through them before and presenting their concerns as one, unified voice. At a recent breakfast meeting, members heard from a leading business coach who said that most entrepreneurs base business decisions on gut feeling and habitual patterns of behaviour. “Often, they are wrong,” warned Paul Hannam of Ardingly. The former Oxford University lecturer now runs an online business coaching team, which he founded with Olympians Steve Backley

and Roger Black. The company bosses were advised to take a leaf out of the athletes’ book to learn how professional sportsmen succeed in their chosen discipline. Using the Olympics analogy, Paul came up with a plan that would consistently put dedicated entrepreneurs in the running for a gold medal. However, just as with athletes, dedication requires the right mental attitude as much as natural ability. The BHBPA, which represents more than 150 firms in and around Burgess Hill, already has a busy calendar arranged for 2014, with more events being organised all the time. Always keen to remember the importance of export and overseas links, the Association is set to welcome a business contingent from its twinned town of Schmallenberg, Germany. The visitors from the well-known textile manufacturer FALKE will be in Sussex for a high-speed English course and, during their stay, will visit several firms in Burgess Hill.

It’s good to know that together we can assist each other in this tough economic climate. The annual Burgess Hill Means Business exhibition has become a commercial landmark and, in 2014, is set to be bigger and better than ever, as it moves to a new venue. “The Kings Church building in Victoria Road provides all the space and easy access that we need,” explains the BHBPA’s Peter Liddell. As before, it will bring together the depth and variety of businesses operating in and around the town and provide wonderful networking opportunities for everyone with an interest in commerce.” for events and membership details, visit www.bhbpa.co.uk

The Last Word There can be no doubt that the Autumn Show & Game Fair at Ardingly last month was a real treat for all who visited. The weather was glorious and the whole weekend was a joy to experience. So many shows and displays to watch, so many tempting local foods, crafts, gifts ‌ For us, the highlight was the terrier racing on Sunday. We took our nephews James and Wills, and a great day out was had by all. As media sponsors of the Fair, we were delighted to see that the event was such a success Back in July, Lauren Humphrey joined us from Oakmeeds School in Burgess Hill for a week’s work experience. Proving that she has great creative potential, she wowed us with some fabulous hand drawings of autumn produce (see below). We really hope she enjoyed her first time in an office environment. A warm welcome goes to our new team member, Diane Clark. Having proved herself as an astute proofreader with the magazine over the past few months, she is now joining us here in the office. Sussex Living Online is the name of our new all-singing-all-dancing website, which will be launching in January 2014 and offer an exciting online advertising platform for businesses large and small, complementing the printed magazine. Do give us a call on 01273 835355 if you think this might be of interest to your business. And watch this space for more details soon. With Christmas and the New Year just around the corner, Sussex Living magazine is putting together some festive and fun editorial to support all our advertisers during this important trading period. Do please remember to book early to take full advantage. As always, we want to thank all our readers and advertisers for your valued support. Do please send your feedback too.

Dear Sussex Living… …I just wanted to thank you for the excellent article on Burgess Hill Town Football Club in your August edition. It was great to have a spotlight on the club in its 132nd year and the volunteers who spend countless hours running it. Your article coincided with the beginning of our season and we have had a good start with strong performances on the pitch and attendances at first team matches up 43%. I’m sure that your article increased awareness of the club and perhaps tempted a few old fans back to Leylands Park. Richard Strange General Manager Burgess Hill Town FC …We have been delighted with the effect our advert in Sussex Living has had on our business on Lindfield High Street. We have seen a significant increase in the number of customers coming through the door and simply have never been busier! Andrew Blackburn Field + Forest …Many thanks for publicising the Hurst Macmillan Coffee Morning in your September issue. We had wonderful support from the people in and around Hurst and I would like to say thank you to as many as possible. Margaret Bishop Hurstpierpoint Bowls Club …Thank you so much for featuring our group Mid Sussex RDA in the September issue of Sussex Living. The article was so positive; Ruth Lawrence clearly recognised the pleasure our riders gain from their sessions. We were all pleased that she enjoyed her morning with us. So many of our riders and their carers were thrilled to see the group in print. We’ve had a couple of potential volunteers approach us recently, and our waiting list of riders is ever expanding. Jackie Bass Mid Sussex Riding for the Disabled …Thanks to all the team at Sussex Living. Whenever we use the magazine, we always get the best responses from your adverts.
