Editor’s comment Suddenly, autumn is here, no doubt about it. And isn’t it great?! Cosy nights in front of an open fire, woolly jumpers, a nice glass of red white – it’s definitely my favourite time of year. Sussex Living is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month this year with a very pink and gorgeous October cover. We also got in touch with three breast cancer survivors in Mid Sussex, whose inspirational journeys and stories are nothing short of humbling. See pages 41-46 for the full story. Better still, give Breast Cancer Awareness your support by joining in one of the many local events in the area. Think pink this October! Lisa de Silva went to her local library to discover what’s on offer to the Mid Sussex community, in addition to traditional book lending (pages 7-10). I warmly recommend that we all do the same – and discover just how useful and enjoyable a local resource the library can be. Books, it turns out, are merely the beginning… Ruth got the chance to meet a very interesting local man: Allan Course is a leading authority on flintknapping. In addition to his practical work, Allan has been asked to help with demonstrations and exhibitions, even working on

television. Turn to pages 13-16 to find out more. No doubt you’ll have heard of the ‘Beeching Axe’. But did you know that Dr Beeching – the 1960s government minister widely (dis)credited with making swingeing cuts to our railway system – lived in East Grinstead? Steve Ramsey did some research (pages 69-71). Our October Walk on pages 35-36 goes past Brambletye House and Weirwood Reservoir near Forest Row. Finally, for those planning to tie the knot in the near feature, there’s a Wedding Feature this month (pages 57-63), with plenty of help and advice to plan your Big Day. And if all that isn’t enough to keep you going through October, how about a trip to the Autumn Show & Game Fair on 5th and 6th October at Ardingly? Supported again by Sussex Living, this wonderful countryside event is everything autumn should be. See you there.

Once upon a time,

public libraries were all about reading books. now, that’s only the beginning. visit your local library and discover

a world of wisdom and wonder.

More than just books… Getting my first library card was one of the cornerstones of my life. A little pocket of green card with my name on, which housed the brown index cards of my borrowed books, it was a passport to other worlds and other lives, fuelling my ambition and sparking my dreams. Having always loved books, the library was my oasis of calm, full of wisdom, comfort and ideas. When growing up got challenging, the library was where I went to escape the world. I returned to the library on a regular basis many years later with my own children, and do you know what? I still get that feeling of wonder and excitement at the opportunities to discover, explore and learn, whenever I visit.

All 36 libraries in West Sussex now offer free WiFi Today, like many other things, my library card is digitised and computer friendly. It’s just one way in which our libraries have adapted to our changing world. The borrowing and returning process has now gone self-service. “There was a bit of suspicion about the new book checking in and out system when we first introduced it,” explains Roger Myall, manager of Haywards Heath library. “But most people got to grips with it pretty easily and there are always staff on hand to help anyone struggling.” The main benefit of the new system is

that staff can give more time and advice to people with queries, those wanting book recommendations or needing some research and anyone with IT enquiries. Of course, today’s public libraries offer more than just books to read. They’re valuable information points and access stations to help with anything from application forms to zodiac signs. At Haywards Heath there are nine PCs available for public use. Users can either pay an annual subscription of £30 for full internet access, or use them on a pay-ascontinued on next page

you-go basis at £2.50 an hour or £1.25 for 30 minutes. There is no need to book and you can also print for 10p a page, which makes booking online tickets an easy process. There is also an A4 and A3 photocopier, enabling you to scan documents to a memory stick, as well as a fax service. And if you’re not a confident computer user, they’ve thought of that too. “One of our most popular services is the Computer Buddy programme,” Roger tells me. “Those with no or little experience of computing are paired up with an experienced and patient volunteer, who is there to help and guide them.” All 36 libraries in West Sussex now offer free WiFi, which means you can take in your own laptop or tablet and work at one of the desks there.

While the internet is often a first port of call when conducting research, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of information available. Helping people navigate the sheer mountain of data is a valuable part of the work of today’s librarian. If it’s family or local history you’re interested in, Worthing has a local studies library and Crawley offers a large reference library as well as a business information library. Both have experienced and helpful staff. So, whether you want to trace your family tree or research new business prospects and generate a mailing list, help is at hand. Despite the importance of IT, books still remain the library’s stock in trade. “But no library stands alone,” explains Roger. “We are part of a network, so

we can order books from other libraries in West Sussex, or further a field if necessary. That means if people can’t find what they want, we can usually get it for them pretty quickly.” West Sussex also offer a Book Group service and, interestingly, Haywards Heath library has the largest number of groups in the county, with around 60 regularly using its services. The library also has two book groups for members to enjoy, one in the afternoon and another in the evening. I went to explore the audiovisual section – offering DVDs, CDs, stories on cassette and videos – and was intrigued by the PlayAways. These are mini MP3 devices pre-loaded with a book. You simply pop in a battery, plug in headphones, press play and you’re away. There’s a range of titles aimed at children and adults. I’m currently listening to a thriller as an incentive to accompany my exercise efforts. Then there’s the wide variety of author events, talks of local interest, literary quizzes and drop-in community sessions on offer. Prescription scheme, where health professionals recommend a self-help book to those suffering from mild depression or anxiety, which can then be borrowed from a local library. Without a doubt, some of the most important and popular library services are those for children. Children’s issues account for around a quarter of all activity in Haywards Heath. “We have lots of free activities,” says Roger. “We do a Baby Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, and a Saturday Singalong aimed at dads coming along with their children. Summer activities include the popular Summer Reading Game, which involves reading six books over the holidays, to keep children interested in reading.” Whether from a book or a screen, reading will entertain, educate, bring you strength, give you comfort and open your eyes and your heart to other worlds. But in today’s digital world of fast changing multimedia consumption, we expect our libraries to deliver much more – and they do.

if you should see a very tall figure striding purposefully across ploughed fields near Hurstpierpoint, it could be

Allan Course, one of the uK’s most skilled flint knappers.

Ancient tools for survival

Allan first started flint knapping over 30 years ago, during a course in Oxford on the prehistory of Britain. Straight out of university in his twenties, he found an immediate affinity for the technique and the patience it required to master. Brought up on the western edge of Dartmoor, Allan found a role model in his grandfather, who “turned his hand to anything on his smallholding: woodcraft, tree felling…whatever it was, he had to be able to use his hands, and he instilled in me a love of history and archaeology.” With the abundance of ancient sites where Allan grew up, he acquired a natural love for past crafts that helped him connect to his ancestors and the land around him. And he explained to me that the theory of flint knapping is straightforward: deliver a blow at the right angle with the correct force and in the right place, combined with hand-

eye coordination and patience. I watched him demonstrate and, as a lethal arrowhead began to materialise, I could imagine someone 5,000 years ago doing the same thing because they had to hunt and eat; this was a craft people needed to stay alive, to feed families, to defend and fight. Allan describes flint knapping as “high skill and low labour” meaning that the craft takes a long time to learn but, once mastered, it is relatively quick to produce objects. In the past, crafts needing a high degree of skill, such as making flint heads, would have been carried out by a few specialists, while easier objects, such as handles, would have been made by many, while women and children would have woven fibres from stinging nettles into twine to bind pieces together. continued on next page

In this way, a community worked as one to produce the tools and weapons necessary for survival. Flint had to be mined. In Sussex, depressions in the ground at Cissbury have been found at 8 metres deep, as flint on the surface tends to shatter with frost fractures during freezing conditions. The ground would have been dug with antlers, and the shoulder blades of oxen would have been used to make shovels. Rubble would have been carried in reed baskets and shafts would have been dug to follow the seams of flint. Although Allan can make a piece indistinguishable from its Neolithic counterpart, he cautions that flint knappers have a duty of social responsibility. In the 1880s, a character called ‘Flint Jack’ made replicas of ancient artefacts and sold them as genuine items; Allan has often been asked to verify the authenticity of a piece. As one of the top five flint knappers in the country at a similar level of expertise, Allan has made reproductions for films, exhibitions and museums. Although he does some demonstrations, lack of suitable quantities of easily accessible flints means that he cannot teach workshops. He has, however, coached 200 people during his 30 years of flint knapping and several of his former ‘students’ are now also coaching, ensuring that the skill is not lost. This particular branch of experimental archaeology helps us to connect with our ancestors

through the processes they would have used. It allows us to understand some of the hurdles they would have faced in a time of complete self reliance. Theirs was a world of perpetual danger, challenge and uncertainty and their hand-made tools were the only thing that stood between them and starvation, cold and attack. Allan observed that much can only be speculation, but using techniques from our deep past can ignite other theories about how our ancestors may have lived. He commented how flints will ‘ring’ differently when struck and whether this may have been the precursor of percussive instruments – perhaps flint may have created the first musical notes? Allan showed me implements from the late Neolithic period, from 3,500 to 2,000 years ago. It’s humbling to think of the hands that made these items in a world so utterly different from our own and yet subject to the same emotions, drives and fears that still reside in us.

A natural love for past crafts helps him

connect to his ancestors and the land around him.

Allan refers to himself as the curator of his collection rather than its owner. Having experienced such a perspective on the deep past, he sees history as a living, continuous process, rather than something gone or passed. Not only does he reproduce authentic tools using ancient processes, he crafts contemporary items that bring new life to recycled materials. He showed me a wealth of his hand-crafted knives, each one with an individual character, the blades fashioned from old farm implements, the handles made from abandoned oak beams, church pews or timbers. A leather sheath held each one, specifically made for it alone, stitched with flax cord and rubbed with beeswax. Each one will eventually find its owner, becoming as much a part of history as a flint arrowhead, unearthed in a local field. Allan is a great believer in necessity being the best teacher. “If you haven’t got a tool, try and make it”, he suggests. This was how the ancients would have learned, implement by implement, gradually evolving into the technology we know today. Not every region contains flint. Here in Sussex, we have plenty but hunter gatherer societies would have continued longer in the shale landscapes of the north and west of the country. The best place to find Neolithic flints is a ploughed field in the right area. Allan is certain that, with a good eye, it’s possible to find several pieces, turned up by the plough. Much will be waste flakes from making something else, or pieces that went wrong and were discarded. Some

had to hunt and eat.

Hand-crafted knives with individual character. A leather sheath holds each one, stitched with flax cord and rubbed with beeswax.

arrowheads would have had transverse heads for the purpose of killing smaller animals or birds so as not to spill their innards; with practice it’s possible to see the purpose a particular tool was made for and conjure up its makers in your imagination. Allan’s lifelong passion for creating implements that our ancestors would have used has seen him act as a consultant on Channel 4’s ‘Time Team’ programme and in numerous demonstrations and exhibitions. Rather than confine himself to studying the past, he has made it relevant, not only by mastering ancient techniques but by creating timeless pieces of his own design. His teachers, over 5,000 years old, have helped him show other people the ancient skills that still reside within our hands, released by flint and firelight.

Happy 10th Birthday Chestnut Mid Sussex Sinfonia Tree House John Broomfield’s Big Day Out Very soon after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease earlier this year, Ditchling’s John Broomfield (pictured above with Matthew Searle, Ditchling Cricket Club on the left, and Dennis Bass, East Sussex MNDA, on his right), knew exactly what he wanted to do: stage a big fundraising game of cricket and get the whole community involved. John Broomfield’s Big Day Out, on 1st September, was an even bigger success than John and many others could ever have dreamed. Months of planning went into the Big Day. John wanted the cricket to be competitive and of a good standard, but most of all it had to be FUN! John raised a quality XI from friends and team mates with whom he had played cricket and other sports over the years. You can imagine the surprise when he unveiled a current Middlesex county player just at the point when the teams filed onto the field to play! Paul Brinkhurst captained John’s side on the pitch. The opposition was a Ditchling Cricket Club XI raised by Matthew Searle. One of many special moments of the day was when John’s son Jack, who had bowled the first six overs up the hill, had to leave the field of play to rush back to his RAF squadron to serve a tour of duty in the Falklands. Jack received a standing ovation. John had placed a large sum of prize money in an envelope for the victorious skipper to forward to MNDA. And the match proved to be just as planned: good, competitive stuff, but all played with great humour.

Just as important to John was the amazing array of entertainments for all the family at Ditchling Rec: bouncy castle, Punch & Judy show, ice cream van and a giant inflatable stoolball net, not to mention the fantastic BBQ. The bar was open all day and the tableloads of cakes for tea had to be seen to be believed! As the sun shone brightly, the number of people who came out to enjoy the day was something that Ditchling has rarely seen. John is so well-loved and respected around these parts that perhaps we shouldn’t have been surprised, but it did take our breath away to see how many people wanted to be there and show their support for this special man and his wonderful wife, Liz. Everyone dug deep raise funds for MNDA. John’s target for the day had been £3,000. So when his sister Sue announced at the final presentation ceremony that the figure raised was going to be a little over £14,000, John was lost for words. A truly amazing result! This included the sums donated on the justgiving site (www. justgiving.com/johnbroomfield1), which is still open for those who still want to show their support. All-in-all, it was a wonderful day: a day for cricket lovers and all the local community; a day enjoyed by so many people; a day fighting back against this terrible disease; a day made and relished by John Broomfield. Oh, and the result of the cricket? John’s side won by 3 wickets chasing Ditchling’s score of 219. But then, it couldn’t really have been any other way, could it?

Performing around Haywards Heath for more than 40 years, the Mid Sussex Sinfonia orchestra is busy preparing for the new season ahead. A chance meeting of two violinists travelling to London from Haywards Heath train station to play in a concert sowed the seed to form a local orchestra all those years ago – indeed, there are still players from those early days amongst the ranks, together with instrumentalists from all parts of Sussex and beyond. Professional violinist Martin Palmer has led the orchestra for several years now and together with their relatively new conductor, Peter Fender, they continue to present concerts to the community. In recent years, the orchestra has been invited to accompany the Ardingly Choral Society, conducted by Robert Hammersley, best known for their marvellous Remembrance Concerts held each year at the Dolphin Centre. This year, it will feature the Mozart Requiem, Verdi Choruses, and Borodin Polotsvian Dances on 10th November. To open their 2013/14 season, and with grateful thanks to the school for their generous support, MSS will be performing at Great Walstead School, Lindfield on 12th October. The main focus of the concert will be Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor played by the superb pianist, Nathan Williamson (pictured above), who was at the school as a boy, and is a former BBC Young Musician Finalist www.nathanwilliamson.co.uk . Nathan is one of the country’s talented young musicians and as well as performing internationally, he is a composer and stages a series of acclaimed concerts each year in Southwold, Suffolk.

Everyone at Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice would like to invite people across the county to come and see for themselves what a wonderful place it is and learn about the specialist care we provide for children and young people with life-limiting and lifethreatening illnesses. On Friday 4 and Saturday 5 October 2013, we will be throwing open our doors and everybody is welcome. There will be tours of the House, taking in the youngsters’ favourites like the hydrotherapy pool and multi-sensory room, plus a chance to meet the nurses and care workers who do such a wonderful job looking after the children and families. This year, the Open Days are extra special because we are celebrating our 10th birthday. When we first opened in November 2003, we were caring for just 30 children. Now, we expect to be caring for around 300 children in our 10th birthday year. During our first decade, we have seen a tremendous increase in demand for our care and have introduced our Oncology and Neonatal services. We have also expanded our Community Team and now have nurses providing care in the families’ own homes across East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire. However, for every child currently being cared for, there is another child somewhere in our locality that we are not yet reaching due to lack of funding. Families are never charged for their care but this specialist service costs almost £3 million each year and the hospice receives hardly any government funding. SuSSex Living October 2013

The League receives legacies and donations for which we are always grateful and we organize fund-raising events during the year. However, the income from our Coffee Shop in the hospital reception area is our major source of income, greatly helped by the fact that our overheads are minimal as our volunteers and trustees all give their time freely. We are, however, always seeking volunteers to help in the Coffee Shop which is based on the ground floor of Princess Royal Hospital. Many volunteers come in every week for a shift of 2-3 hours, whilst others help once or twice a month. They enjoy the camaraderie and company of other volunteers and provide a valuable and useful 7-day service to visitors and staff alike. The Trust provides parking permits for volunteers working in the Coffee Shop. The League of Friends, a registered charity, provides equipment and amenities at the PRH for the benefit of patients, staff and visitors. In the last year we have provided 10 new beds in the Intensive Care Unit, at a cost of £100,000. We have also funded the refurbishment and equipping of the former fracture clinic amounting to £73,000, as a Rapid Access Medical Unit. This is for mainly older patients who have been referred by their GP, thus creating more capacity in A&E and avoiding unnecessary emergency admissions - the unit is open 7 days a week. In addition to these 2 major items we have provided many less costly but much needed items throughout the hospital at a further cost of £171,000. The Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Hayward’s Heath serves the whole of Mid-Sussex from East Grinstead to the Downs.

The walk/run on Sunday 6th October is open to all comers. There is a choice of 2 local walks, a 6.5 mile walk on muddy rural footpaths or a 1 mile walk mainly on roads. The routes are signed and follow public footpaths. Dogs are welcome but must be under control as livestock maybe present along the walk. This year it will also be possible to run the 6.5-mile route, which follows the same route as the walkers. Registration will take place online OR on the day at Staplefield Village Hall , RH17 6ET and will start from 9am for walkers and 10am for runners. Haywards Heath Music Society Haywards Heath Music Society continues its 72nd season of professional chamber music concerts on Saturday 19th October at St Wilfrid’s Church, when award-winning violinist Adelia Myslov, accompanied by pianist Craig White, will be playing in a programme featuring music by Bach, Brahms and others. Adelia has received many favourable reviews for her performances, and an impressive and entertaining evening is in prospect. Top-quality performances are assured for the rest of the season as well. On 9th November, pianist Samson Tsoy, described as having ‘brilliant virtuosity and poetic soul’, will give a recital which includes Mussorgsky’s famous ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’. The Society’s first evening of 2014, on 15th February, will feature an illustrated lecture by

Janet Canetty-Clarke on Mozart, Salzburg and Vienna: a tale of two musical cities. This is followed on 5th April by a song recital on the theme of Travels through Europe, given by Amanda Buckland (soprano) and Jane Haughton (mezzo). For the final concert on 3rd May, they welcome the renowned English Piano Trio who will play Beethoven’s well-known Archduke Trio. The concerts are open to non-members, and tickets, priced at £12 adults, £11 seniors and £3 students (with reductions for members), are available from Carousel Music or on the door. To encourage parents to bring their family along, up to two adults accompanied by an under-18 will be admitted for half price.

Ditchling Players Our Autumn production on 6-9 November is ‘Quartet’ by Ronald Harwood.

Reggie, Wilf and Cissy are residents in a genteel retirement home for opera singers where all is well. Suddenly, into their cosy little world comes a newcomer, Jean, who also happens to be Reggie’s ex-wife. During the course of Ronald Harwood’s play we find out more about the lives of the four characters – sometimes poignant and sometimes humorous – while they plan to celebrate Verdi’s birthday. Everything reaching a crescendo (if you’ll excuse the musical pun) with the opening night. Following a very successful audition in August, the play is fully cast and rehearsals are well under way with some familiar faces to the Ditchling stage. You may have seen the film, which was released earlier this year, and think why bother to come along and see it on the stage, but I’m assured by the director, Jill Hewer, that the play does differ

BUILDERS WHO CARE? WHERE’S THE CATCH?

WITH NUTSHELL THERE ISN’T ONE. There’s so often a catch with builders - either they don’t turn up, or they overcharge, or they’re messy and not very pleasant to have around. Welcome to Nutshell’s world. A world without a catch. Sure, we are builders, but unlike any others you might have dealt with. We go about our business in an entirely different way. We’re customer focused for a start. Our aim is to take the stress out of what can be the rather traumatic process of construction. We keep a firm control on budgets and insist on regular meetings with our clients - result - no uncomfortable financial surprises at the end of a project. Every day hundreds of trains hurtle under this Gothic folly whose imposing castellated towers protect the old tunnel keeper’s cottage. For most people this secluded building remains a mystery. What are its historical origins? What lies behind the commanding battlements? What is it like having trains running right beneath your living room? Well, first of all, can I say that I know that what you call ‘hang-gliders’ are in fact, dog-eating vultures. This means that walking on Devil’s Dyke can be very stressful for me, even on days when the skies are clear, because you never know when one might appear, forcing me to run all the way back to the car, no matter how much Roger shouts. I’m not keen on kites either. All that diving and swooping and loop-the-looping – it’s just not natural and actually quite scary. Possibly, they grow up to be hang-gliders, but I haven’t made my mind up about that yet. Luckily, living where we do, there are plenty of other places to go, each one with its own dog interest and offering different doggy challenges. The river walk at Henfield is probably my favourite because I get to go swimming as well as running and stick-chasing. I’m trying to make friends with the swans but, so far, they seem quite hostile to the idea. We walk in the woods when it’s raining. They provide any number of interesting smelling opportunities and some squirrelchasing exercise, but very little stick throwing as the stick can’t go very far. I’ve discovered the secret places where the badgers and the foxes are, but I’m keeping them to myself. The fields on the edge of the National Park are good for meeting and chatting to my mates, and I love it when we go up onto the high ground over Ditchling Beacon, or Wolstonbury, or the Jack and Jill windmills. As well as having endless room to run, I can sometimes catch the strange and foreign scents brought in by the wind from far off places. By and large, it’s a pretty good dog’s life in this part of Sussex, although we’d probably enjoy it even more if you got rid of all the sheep – just a thought. I think I’d better take him out after all that.

Worried about how your pet will cope with the fireworks season?

The Mewes veterinary Clinic has some helpful advice.

Prepare your pets for

whizz, bang, pop

As Bonfire Night approaches, it’s a good idea to consider the impact of the fireworks season on our furry friends. I spoke to Julia Mewes of the Mewes Veterinary Clinic in Haywards Heath who explained that noise made by rockets and bangers can have a traumatic effect on dogs, cats and other pets. “Fireworks season can be very distressing for animals. In many cases, the fear builds year by year, so it’s important to deal with it before it becomes a real problem.” Julia has organised a talk, aimed at helping pets cope with the fear of loud noises, at the Birch Hotel, Haywards Heath, on Wednesday 16th October, 7.30pm. “The talk will address preventative tactics and look at coping with your pet’s first ever Bonfire Night,” she explains. This is an issue that many pet lovers will face during autumn. In fact, a whopping 73% of owners claim to have at least one animal with a fireworks phobia. Dogs and cats tend to be particularly vulnerable to anxiety, and their reactions can include hiding behind the sofa, soiling the house and digging up the carpet. Julia warns that in some cases the

problem can build to dangerous proportions. “Loud noises can drive animals truly frantic,” she says. “We’ve seen some serious cases of anxiety at the Clinic. Sometimes we even have to sedate pets. For guide dogs, this can be a particular problem as they can’t work for 24 hours after sedation.” The Mewes Veterinary Clinic has a history of going above and beyond to give animals a truly personalised level of care. Unlike many other vets in the area, the Mewes Veterinary Clinic offers extended 15-minute appointments and never double-books slots. In addition, there’s a ‘One-Pet-OneVet’ policy, meaning that vets can build up a personal relationship with the owners and pets registered with the Clinic. This month’s talk at the Birch Hotel will focus mainly on dogs and cats and should be particularly helpful for owners with puppies or dogs new to the area. Those with smaller animals can employ a few simple tactics to help keep them calm. Provide plenty of bedding for hamsters, mice and gerbils so they have something to burrow in. Partly cover outside cages,

The talk on 16th October will address preventative tactics and look at coping with your pet’s first ever Bonfire Night. pens and aviaries with blankets to help soundproof the area. And do make extra sure that any bonfire is a safe distance away from the homes of outside animals. Don’t forget our local wildlife either – hedgehogs often try to hibernate in the foundations of bonfires, so always check for stray critters before lighting your fire. Ensuring that your pets are safe and happy will leave you free to enjoy the magic of a Sussex Bonfire Night.

‘Not last night but the night before Three wee witches came to my door. One had a fiddle and one had a drum And one had a pancake strapped to her bum.’ (Anon)

No I don’t know what it means either, but in Scotland we used to chant it as children on Halloween. Nobody really knows who or what started the practice of strange goings-on on 31st October, the eve of All Hallows Day, or Halloween, as it is now known, but rather than dying out as the years have gone by, the occasion has become more and more popular. What was once a Pagan, Celtic ‘end of harvest’ celebration, became increasingly influenced by the belief that it was also the date when ghosts and devils were most likely to visit the human world. However, a time of fear and scary, unexplained events has now become party time. The bonfires, lanterns and fierce costumes designed to frighten away evil spirits have evolved into children in fancy dress playing ‘trick or treat’. This is a somewhat controversial American import and has gradually taken over from the more traditional ‘guising’ – from the word ‘disguising’ – when children would perform a song or a poem, hoping to be rewarded with sweets.

Some even believe that the custom follows an ancient Christian tradition where poor people would go from house to house on this night, begging for food in return for prayers for the dead. That’s quite a long way from our annual (and less than bloodcurdling) experience of opening the door to several small Princesses, one Lady Gaga, a Batman and some Pirates, all demanding chocolate and wanting to use the bathroom. The costumes are so complex these days that this last operation can take some time, but fortunately they are always accompanied by their parents. As a family celebration, Halloween is now more popular than Guy Fawkes’ Night or even Easter, and comes second only to Christmas as a retail bonanza. One family in three will have some form of Halloween party and we will spend around £300 million on the festival this year. This is a fair distance away from the $8 billion Americans will spend, but is still a fair chunk of change to spend on fancy dress, confectionery, pumpkins and party food. And to think the highlights of my Halloween as a child were scooping out a turnip to make a lantern, colouring my face with burnt cork and dunking for apples.

Blooming Times

As summer is drawing to a close, it’s time to think about planting for next year.

Bulbs, anyone?

Go gently with supplementary feed;

plants grow slowly at this time of year and their dietary requirements are modest.

Sussex clay is a force to be reckoned with – ask my builder, as his brand new ‘Neverbend’ spade broke after 20 minutes! After much swearing (by him), I went off to bake a comforting cake while he went off to hire a Kanga hammer... Some of you benefit from a crumblier, gravelly loam, but most people reading this will be gardening on heavy clay and the thought of digging hundreds of bulb-planting holes is wearisome to say the least. But remember: bulbs do brilliantly in pots. Don’t faff about with small quantities of potting soil; you’ll need far more than you reckoned. Using two wheelbarrows side by side, or a large board on the ground, empty out an 80 litre bag of peat-free potting compost. Then mix in 10 spadefuls of leaf mould and 5 spadefuls of horticultural grit. The leaf mould will act like a moisture-retaining sponge – important when warm spring days arrive. Grit will quickly drain away excess water – good for the plants and for protecting pots against frost damage. It also adds weight to containers, making them less likely to blow over in winter gales. There’s no need to add additional food in the way of bonemeal or fertiliser granules; bulbs

32

SuSSex Living October 2013

cleverly pre-store all the energy they need to flower. Although if you’re planting up a mixed container, then a fine sprinkling around pansies, polyanthus, etc will help ensure winter bedding plants get all the sustenance they need. Go gently with supplementary feed; plants grow slowly at this time of year and their dietary requirements are modest. If you’re overgenerous and we have a mild start to winter, too much food will encourage plants to produce soft new growth which will be damaged at the first frost. Small pots are best planted using a single variety of bulb. The advantage of small containers is their easy portability. Keep your patio looking good by re-arranging the display, removing pots with fading flowers into a quiet corner. Big pots seem expensive at the time of purchase, but if you choose good quality ones in the largest size you can accommodate, they’ll last for years and make outstanding garden features. With very large pots, layering is the key. Use several types of bulbs, say, aconites, snowdrops and crocus in the top few inches of soil, daffodils and hyacinths at about 6 inches deep, finishing with longstemmed late-flowering tulips, who will happily cope with being buried 10 inches or more. Carefully select bulbs according to colour, height and flowering time, add a summer flowering shrub, which will be coming into leaf and adding interest just as many bulbs are dying back, enhance the lot with seasonal bedding plants and you’ll have a container that looks good throughout the year. www.sussexliving.com

This autumn walk will take you through farmland and established tracks, past the dam at the end of Weirwood Reservoir and the remains of Brambletye House.

walk

From the car park, cross to Station Road and bear left along Lower Road, which runs parallel to Hartfield Road. On reaching the A22, turn left to the Chequers Hotel, and cross the road to the signed path opposite which passes between and underneath buildings and into a courtyard. Follow the pebbled path ahead alongside a stream to a footbridge, cross the bridge and walk uphill to a stile at the top of the field. Follow the waymarked path around Burnthouse Farm, go over a couple of stiles, then bear right down a short section of track to a stile and gate. Cross the field ahead to a stile, then carry on ahead to another stile to reach a bridleway. Away to the right is your ďŹ rst glimpse of the remains of Brambletye House which we will pass towards the end of the walk. Cross the bridleway and follow the wide path ahead through new woodland. Cross a bridge, then bear slightly left to follow a right-hand field edge out to the access road leading to Weirwood Reservoir. Turn right and, at the entrance to the reservoir, sidestep to your right and follow a narrow

path which runs parallel to the access road. Go through a metal gate and carry on ahead on a left-hand field edge to cross a footbridge and into another field. Carry on ahead alongside the perimeter fence and go over a stile beside a pylon. Once over the stile, go uphill and, shortly before reaching Botley Wood and at the entrance to the Millennium Walk, turn squarely right, and cross to a gateway, then walk downhill on a thinly defined path to go over a stile and footbridge into the next field. Follow the path alongside a stream, turning right on a bridleway to the buildings at Horseshoe Farm. On reaching the buildings, turn right on a gravel track. At the entrance gates to Horseshoe Farm, sidestep to your left to join a very narrow enclosed path. Follow this meandering path to a large open field. Cross this field to a barely visible gap about 10 yards up from the bottom right-hand field corner (at the time of surveying, the path was not signed at this point). Follow the pleasant grassy continued on next page SuSSex Living October 2013

path ahead, with an orchard on your left, to reach Brambletye Fruit Farm. From here, follow the meandering track past dwellings, with the ruins of Brambletye House coming into view on your right (pictured overleaf). The ruins of Brambletye House are Grade II listed. The house was built in the reign of James I and consists of three towers and three storeys, standing unattached to each other. From the remains of Brambletye House, follow the road uphill until you reach Brambletye Crossing, then turn right along the Forest Way. The Forest Way follows the line of the former East Grinstead to Tunbridge Wells railway which was closed by Dr Beeching in 1966. Keep going until you are back in the centre of Forest Row.

Introducing the Lyric – 100% invisible extended-wear hearing aid Sussex Audiology Centre, based at Woodingdean’s Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital, are pleased to announce that they are one of only 30 hearing aid centres across the UK chosen to fit the new industry standard in hearing aids, and we would like to offer everyone a chance to trial this magnificent new hearing aid.

that no-one will be able to see how well you can hear, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Perfect for mild to moderate hearing loss, the Lyric hearing aid is completely invisible and is the world’s first hearing aid that can be worn for extended periods of time. This means

The Lyric device is placed deep within the ear canal at our practice; it is just 12mm long and sits just 4mm from your ear drum, using the natural properties of your ear’s anatomy so you hear the way your ears are designed to. Also, because it can be worn all day and night, it lets you live your life without constraints. In fact, people who wear Lyric say it feels like they are no longer wearing a hearing aid!

Ben Tranter and Rosanne Westcott will be running free trials of this revolutionary product at our Woodingdean Centre in Brighton on 8th-10th and 22nd-24th October, with a free 30-day trial period, so that you can hear for yourselves how fantastic this new hearing aid is. Having completed the comprehensive Training and Fitting process for Lyric (which included fitting each other with the Lyric hearing aid!), Ben and Rosanne not only know how good this product is but also how great it sounds, feels and looks. There really is no other hearing aid around that sounds this good, is so well hidden, is all but invisible and lets you forget about your hearing ailment for months at a time. No other hearing aid lets you wake up hearing, wear your hearing aid in the shower or at the gym and not worry about having spare batteries to hand. You may have tried a digital hearing aid with some success, or perhaps you’ve tried a hearing aid and not got on well; or you may have a hearing loss but refuse to do anything about it due to the stigma attached to conventional hearing aids. If any of these apply to you, the LYRIC could be for you because it really is unlike any hearing aid that has gone before.

Surviving breast cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and there can be

few people whose lives have not been touched by this disease in some way.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK; around 1 in 8 women will develop it during their lifetime. Every year, almost 55,000 people are diagnosed in the UK, which equates to 150 people each day, or one person every 10 minutes. While a small number of men get breast cancer, the biggest risk factor is being female. Our risk increases with age: 81% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. Perhaps surprisingly, less than 10% of all breast cancers run in families. Most cancers seem to happen by chance. That said, better breast awareness, screening programmes, earlier detection and more targeted

treatments means that survival rates are improving. Today, over 75% of sufferers survive breast cancer beyond 10 years and, although a diagnosis can feel like the end of the world, there is still a good life to be had on the other side of treatment. I recently met three local women who have all managed to turn their experience of the disease into something that has ultimately had a positive effect on the way they live their lives and, in one case, giving rise to a whole new career. All agreed that being breast aware is the key to fighting the disease. “Get to know what’s normal for continued on next page S u ss e x L i v i n g October 2013

you and your breasts,” urges Ann Winny (pictured far left), owner of Columbines Beauty & Wellbeing Salon in Hurstpierpoint. “I found a dent in my breast, not a lump. Any lump, dent, swelling, changes to the skin surface or the size and shape of the breast or nipple, should be checked out.” In fact, Ann is so passionate about breast awareness that, since her recovery, she has become a volunteer and media spokesperson for the

charity Breast Cancer Care. As part of this role, she gives talks to groups of local women, sharing her experience of the disease and educating them in breast awareness. “Early detection and screening are so important,” she explains. “The earlier the disease is caught, the less treatment you will need. I was lucky in that I avoided having chemo.” Dhillie Tighe (pictured bottom left) from East Grinstead was not so lucky. Three years ago, she

felt a hot tender lump on her upper chest. Her nursing experience told her it was mastitis, but she saw a GP and was seen under the two-week rule, which means that anyone with cause for concern is referred within 14 days. Despite being given a clean bill of health, Dhillie’s lump grew larger; eight months later, she was referred to a surgeon for a lumpectomy. After a late night phone call asking her to come in to see a consultant, she knew it was bad news. “In fact, the consultant told me that I’d saved my own life by coming back so promptly,” she says. “So, although I was diagnosed with the worst type of cancer, he said my outlook was still good.” Amy Bath (pictured left) of Haywards Heath had a vivid dream one night, which prompted her to check her breasts. “While one felt slightly thicker, it was nothing that I would have noticed,” she tells me. “After two weeks with no change, I went to see my GP who referred me for a mammogram and scans and, eventually, I was diagnosed. It sounds bizarre, but that dream helped save my life!” An initial diagnosis can be devastating, but once the initial shock has worn off there is a tremendous amount of information and support out there for you. “Ask lots of questions,” urges Ann. “Get as much information as you can because you have to make lots of decisions about your treatment. Breast Cancer Care have a fantastic website (www.breastcancercare.org.uk) and forum where you can talk to those who have already been through it.” Dhillie suggests always taking a partner or friend to your consultations. “Sometimes you don’t

When Amy was given the news that she needed a mastectomy, there was a real fear of the unknown. important to see that you can still have a beautiful body without a breast,” she says. Building a support network is also important. However independent you are, appreciate the fact that people want to help you and ask them for specific things, such as cooked meals, lifts to hospital, childcare, dog walks or whatever help you need. If you can also improve your wellbeing with good food, light exercise, proper rest, pampering and some complementary medicine, it will all aid your recovery. While they admit to having dark days, Ann, Amy and Dhillie, all feel the experience has instigated full and richer lives. “I relish every day now,” says Dhillie. “I’m more sociable, I no longer live to work and my life is richer for it.” “You have to think of yourself as a survivor, not a victim. I love the chance to spread the word on breast awareness, giving talks and chatting to clients,” explains Ann. “I recently helped out at Car Fest – an event that combines classic cars, live music and food while raising money for BBC Children in Need. We had a pink Rolls Royce; it was great fun and a chance to give something back.” The changes to Amy’s life have been somewhat more radical. Unhappy at the lack of pretty and feminine post-operative lingerie and swimwear, she launched her business About The Girl (www. aboutthegirl.co.uk), which sells a range of attractive post-mastectomy underwear and swimwear. Amy specialises in sourcing mainstream brands, such as Seafolly, that she adapts with a pocket and one of her beanie bags. “On holiday, women want to wear normal swimwear and not to stand out,” she says.

The beanies come in different sizes and are filled with tiny polystyrene balls which makes them really light. As they don’t absorb water, they dry out really quickly too. In fact, Amy has started supplying them to hospitals, as they are so comfortable to wear. They also work really well in strapless bras. What’s more, Amy is starting a charity to recycle unwanted prosthetics to help women in countries where they are hard to get hold of.

“Having breast cancer is really tough but you can get through it and you can still have a wonderful life. I’ve taken up dancing. I’m now passionate about what I do and I love everything about my life,” she smiles. Talking to Ann, Amy and Dhillie was both humbling and inspiring and reinforced the importance of breast cancer awareness. Learn to love the water Have you discovered THE SUSSEX SWIM SCHOOL’S beautiful, clean, warm pool in Lower Beeding? It’s the perfect place for children to learn.

My name is Hilary Silverman and I am the Principal of The Sussex Swim School. Being the youngest of four children, my father would take us swimming every Sunday morning. We always had so much fun and would play many imaginative games. By the time I was six years old, I was swimming for Brent, in North London. I have continued swimming all my life. Now, my 15-year-old son Jonny swims competitively for Mid Sussex Marlins Swim Club and I am very proud of him. Before Jonny was born, I studied to become a Swimming Teacher and I have never looked back; it is a fantastic career. It is incredibly fulfilling to take on a new pupil who is frightened or a total beginner, or someone who has special needs, and watch as their confidence and ability grows. Swimming is one of the most important life skills a child can learn. Without the ability to swim, a child will be held back throughout life, unable to participate in water activities such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, fishing, fun splash parties or even beach holidays. Many parents believe their children will be

48

SuSSex Living October 2013

taught to swim once they go to school, but often this is simply not the case. In Sussex, a 7-yearold child might receive one term (12 weeks) of swimming lessons at primary school. Speaking from experience, that’s unlikely to be enough time for any child to learn to swim. The Sussex Swim School specialises in teaching children between the ages of 6 months up to competition level. We offer a natural progression from infant water safety programmes like Little Dippers and welcome children who have had little experience of the water. Not only do we teach children to swim, but we also show them how to enjoy and respect the water. We train them to swim effectively while building water confidence and incorporating important water safety skills. Most of our children attain independence in the water at around 3 years old, but we have had quite a few outstanding 2-year-olds swim 30 metres! We believe in placing children in a class to match their individual aquatic ability as opposed

incredibly

It’s frightened or a total to their age. Children joining us will be invited to a trial lesson in order that we can assess their ability and place them in the most suitable class. With a maximum of 6 children in each class, spaces are in demand. But, importantly, small class sizes ensure more individual attention and less mainstreaming of ability than typically found at this age. Lessons are structured and the children learn to swim through fun activities. Each term, the children are assessed by their swimming teacher. Once they have achieved the skills outlined in the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) National Teaching Plan, they will be awarded the ASA Badge and certificate and moved up to the next relevant stage class. Our Pre-School lessons follow the ASA Duckling stages 1 to 5. Once pupils have achieved Duckling 5, they then switch to the ASA National Teaching Plan Stage 1 to 7, which is aimed at school-aged children. Each summer, The Sussex Swim School runs two intensive crash course programmes over four consecutive days. Crash courses are excellent for boosting children’s confidence, ability, strength

fulfilling to take on a new pupil who is beginner, and watch their confidence and ability grow. and stamina and are great fun too. In conjunction with the ASA and the Royal Life Saving Society, we also incorporate ‘Get Safe’ into our lessons. All teachers at The Sussex Swim School are fully ASA qualified, hold the Royal Life Saving Societies Rescue Certificate, are first aid trained, fully insured and police checked and approved to work with children. As our teaching programme is unique to The Sussex Swim School, our teachers spend an additional 6 months training with us before they take their own classes. We are proud to be an ASA Member Swim School. Set in 45 acres of glorious Sussex countryside, our pool is beautiful and exclusively used by us. It measures 12 metres by 7 metres and has a deep end of 2.5 metres, perfect for teaching children to dive. We keep the water at a steady 31.5C degrees, so it’s lovely and warm. Gently and regularly chlorinated, the pool and surrounding areas are always kept meticulously clean and fresh. Mums (and dads!) are invited to come and watch their children learn to swim in a calm and

peaceful atmosphere. Lloyd Loom settees and chairs are available poolside for parents to sit and relax. We also have two playpens with lots of lovely toys and books to keep younger siblings entertained. Our experienced teachers are parents themselves; they have great empathy and understanding of the many phases children go through – crucial in helping and understanding your child’s development in the water. Please feel free to call me for advice on swimming lessons for your child, and to book a free trial class. I look forward to hearing from you.

Let it rock! Don’t underestimate the power of a good leather jacket to see you through many

a wardrobe dilemma.

I bought my first leather jacket when I was 16. It was black and biker style with studs and zips, and I wore it to look cute yet rebellious, obviously. I guess the love affair must have started then; over the years I’ve owned a great many leather jackets, all of them coveted, adored and worn until virtually threadbare. As investment buys go, they’re far and away the best money I’ve ever spent fashion-wise. Once you look past the grungy biker stereotype, you’ll be surprised to discover how versatile these jackets can be. There are now so many different styles, types of leather and choice of colours available that The Leather Jacket has arrived as a staple in many a discerning woman’s wardrobe. I have a dark greige toned-down biker jacket. It’s the one I always wear because it goes with everything. Sling it on over a tea dress to toughen up an otherwise too-girly look, dress down a formal skirt/blouse combo, or just wear over jeans and t-shirt for something more casual. My rusty brown jacket was an impulse buy last year. A softer and more grown-up look, it’s been my trusty go-to cover-up for many occasions (including formal events!), oozing cool confidence and sophistication, or so I’d like to think. And then there’s the supersoft bottle green fitted jacket I fell head over heels for this summer. It was a bargain, but I would have probably bought it at three times the price. The colour is fantastic: classic yet on-trend enough to lift my entire autumn wardrobe. And spring, come to think of it. Less mumsy than a cardie, but just as useful and very easy to wear, leather jackets can add a contemporary edge to any outfit. Suddenly, girly florals are possible again for the over 35s – just team with a bit of timeless leather for a stylish take that’s totally mutton-free. Not as stiff as a tailored blazer (and infinitely more weather-proof !), leather can soften your look and bring your image bang up to date.

Less mumsy than a cardie,

but just as useful, leather jackets can add a contemporary edge to any outfit. Finally, there’s no getting away from the fact that leather is just, well, cool. I can’t say that about too many of my other garments… And with youth being ever elusive and my attempts to hang on to it with aplomb increasingly fraught with difficulty, the leather jacket does the job beautifully. Rock on! www.sussexliving.com

head for hats?

A

A wedding invitation is a great excuse to buy a new hat. But do guests these days still wear them?

Hats get you noticed, just ask Princess Eugenie. Who can forget her stand-out headpiece at the Royal Wedding, resembling a doorknocker framed by an octopus? In fact, the whole parade of hats on display at William and Kate’s wedding can only be described as head turning, with many head dresses likened to flying saucers, upturned buckets, flowerpots, lampshades and abstract art. At the top end of British society, no special occasion – and particularly a wedding – is complete without a hat, with Samantha Cameron’s decision not to wear one to the royal nuptials described as ‘disrespectful.’ In fact, back in the day, it would have been disgraceful to venture out of the house without a hat on any occasion, as only beggars went bare-headed. As with many of our traditions, the custom for wearing wedding hats has its origins in religion and dates back to when the Anglican Church required females to keep their heads covered when in church. While this rule has now been relaxed, many of us still enjoy the sense of occasion, fun and opportunity to make a fashion statement by wearing a hat. Headpieces not only draw attention, they can also provide a flattering frame for the face, even though styles have, of course, changed over the years. The early 20th century fashion was for very formal hats, from the wide-brimmed chapeau worn by Audrey Hepburn, to the sophisticated pillboxes of Jackie Onassis and the neat, often veiled, cocktail hats favoured in the 1950s. However, during the Swinging Sixties, formal hat wearing began to decline as people felt it was too old-fashioned and conformist, and it’s been left to the modern day fascinator to revive the trend for wedding hats. continued on next page

A fascinator is less formal than a hat, it doesn’t ruin your hairstyle, is light to wear and can be as glamorous or modest as you like. continued from previous page

Fascinators consist either of a comb, hairclip or headband, embellished with feathers, beading, lace and flowers or, more creatively and flamboyantly, with small replica gardens, animals and fruit, as modelled by various celebrities. Even The Duchess of Cambridge likes them. The success of the fascinator is that it is less formal than a full coverage hat, it doesn’t ruin your hairstyle, it is light to wear and can be as bold, glamorous or modest as you like. Today, even brides themselves are choosing bridal fascinators over tiaras or wedding hats. What’s more, wearing a fascinator means you don’t need to be mindful of wedding hat etiquette that requires ladies wait to remove their headwear until the mother of the bride removes hers. More importantly, there is no need to worry about helmet head hair, or the problem of where to put your hat once it’s removed. Hats are fun, flattering and can transform your wedding outfit from stylish to stunning. So, Ladies, if you want to get ahead, get a hat!

Jennifleur are celebrating 10 years of bringing their

special brand of floral magic to people all over Sussex.

Hearts and flowers “I often say we’re more than just a florist,” owner Jennifer Harris smiles warmly as she invites me to have a look around her shop. Intrigued to see vintage bicycles, hat boxes and other quirky accessories displayed here and there among gorgeous blooms and truly stunning and unusual floral designs, I get the distinct feeling that this isn’t your average florist. I go through to the garden area – beautifully dressed to shabby chic perfection and complete with a stylish summerhouse used for floristry workshops – where I’m offered a cup of tea, like many of Jenny’s customers. “It’s important to get to know our customers, and if they want to have a cuppa and a chat, it helps us understand them, so we can create something they’ll love,” she explains. Jenny and her team – daughter Holly and assistant Stef – are all professionally qualified in floral design and it is their passion for floristry that allows their creativity to flow through. Flowers aren’t

“Thanks a bunch to

all our friends and just arranged, but designed using expert knowledge customers who have and experience of colour, texture, design and scent supported us over the past 10 years!” from the to create something really special. No surprise then Jennifleur team (top), that Jennifleur have gained a loyal group of regular from left: Stef, Dolly the customers over the years who just love their designs. Cocker Spaniel, Jenny and Holly. Jennifleur are happy to create floral designs of any type, but specialise mainly in rustic and vintage styling, whether that’s Hollywood glamour, country charm or shabby chic. To promote their distinctive style, they recently acquired a French vintage van, which they use to take their flowers to the people by attending vintage fairs. Genius idea! You can hire this unique vintage van for weddings or photo shoots – fully decorated to add to the atmosphere. The van has been customised inside, lending itself to a variety of uses, from a mobile florist to an alfresco café/bar. Floristry can be an emotional business, whether people are celebrating a wedding, grieving the loss of a loved one or marking any sort of occasion. What makes Jennifleur more than just a florist is their personal touch, along with a wonderfully caring attitude. The team treats everyone as a friend, listening to their needs, sharing their advice and knowledge, sourcing anything unusual that may be requested – and always going that extra mile. “I once took a bouquet into Burgess Hill and waited for the number 42 bus, so I could deliver it to the bus driver,” laughs Stef. Together with local workshops (ask about wreath-making for Christmas), community and charity involvement, Jennifleur are a business based on hearts as well as flowers.

wedding faux pas

Easy on the drink Your wedding day should be the best day of your life, an occasion to

be remembered for all the right reasons. Here’s a quick reminder of what nOT to do.

What not to wear It is never a good idea to wear white or in any way try to upstage the bride. Come to think of it, denim, tracksuits and any clothing that might make people feel uncomfortable (basques, micro shorts etc.) should also be avoided. And brides, if you’re a stress eater, please think twice before you opt for a fitted dress. I once had to help two other bridesmaids try and lace one weeping bride into a dress that had become at least two sizes too small.

Two words of advice: Pace yourself. Free booze and no food until late afternoon can be a recipe for disaster. Nobody wants to watch the happy couple slurring their vows, being sick or even fainting during the ceremony. The same applies to wedding guests. Thou shalt not get wasted and start acting up, bad mouthing or hitting on other guests. Also, ‘performing’ with the band is probably best left to the professionals.

Never work with animals It’s a lovely idea to give the congregation envelopes filled with real live butterflies to release at the end of the service. Only be warned the heat and confinement will mean most of them won’t make it. Similarly, releasing doves can be enchanting, until they decide to dispense some dollops of ‘luck’ all over the wedding party. continued on next page

Total turn-off Mobile phones must switched off or at least on silent during the ceremony – surely this goes without saying. Also, don’t think you can get away with sending surreptitious texts or check the football scores – you will probably get caught on the wedding video. Do try and refrain from taking photographs by holding mobiles up above peoples’ heads. You will block everyone’s view of the ceremony, especially if you’re using an iPad! If you do take pictures, don’t immediately post them on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, as the bride and groom might like to exercise some quality control.

I once saw an elderly relative knocked off her feet by a swathe of lilies. Unaccustomed to public speaking as I am Under no circumstances should you give a microphone to anyone even slightly inebriated. At best, you will get long rambling nonsense and at worst, stories about old flames and how much they approve of the bride’s recent boob job. Also, make sure that you don’t give away the fact that the bride is already pregnant when not even her parents know yet. I witnessed this twice. Awkward. And do try and avoid too much emphasis on those who have passed away and are not able to share the occasion. This can be really upsetting, not to mention ruining the bride’s make-up. Life-size cardboard cut outs of the missing person are also not a good idea (don’t laugh – it happens!), just sad and a little bit creepy. Aside from these big issues, there are the obvious ones: don’t be late, don’t spill food or drink on the bride and groom, do control young children and, finally, a word of caution to all your brides: When throwing your bouquet, do so gently. I once saw an elderly relative knocked off her feet by a swathe of lilies.

Melt-in-the-mouth ingredients

and a menu overflowing with creative combinations make The Cat inn a food lover’s dream destination.

It isn’t often you find a pub that combines old-world country charm with exquisite food, but The Cat in West Hoathly is one of those rare rural gems. The ancient inglenook fireplace, cosy bar area and postcard-ready village surroundings could have been lifted straight out of the 16th century. Take a glance at the menu, though, and you’ll find a line-up of elegant dishes that wouldn’t look out of place in a top London restaurant. The responsibility for this seamless blend of traditional and modern lies with The Cat’s landlord, Andrew Russell. When we rolled up at the inn on a sunny weekday lunchtime, he was already dancing around the dining room greeting the first customers of the day. Regulars get a kiss on the cheek and quick gossip; newbies like me are treated to a friendly greeting and a run-down of the day’s specials. On the day of our visit, the blackboard was overflowing with fresh, seasonal goodies. My mum, an out-and-out carnivore, dithered over the Duke of Berkshire Pork, Apricot & Pistachio Terrine, Toast & Chutney and the Homemade Scotch Duck Egg & Piccalilli Potato Salad before finally opting for a starter from the main menu: Braised Ham Hock Salad,

Country pub

purrfection Broad Beans, Sugar Snaps, Samphire & Boiled ‘Muscovy’ Duck Egg. I chose the Honey Roasted Figs, Parma Ham, Goat’s Cheese & Balsamic Glaze – a heaven-sent amalgamation of all my favourite ingredients. Having already heard The Cat’s praises sung by the folks at the Sussex Living office, I was expecting something good – what we got, though, was pure meltin-the-mouth excellence. The real winner here was the flavour combinations. The sweetness of the figs melded perfectly with the soft, ripe goat’s cheese and the salty subtlety of the parma ham. My mum described her dish as ‘perfectly put together and perfectly cooked’, with ham hock that was divinely tender. The Cat prides itself on its creative Vegetarian food, and for my main I went for a scrumptiously sounding veggie special: Tempura of Ricotta Stuffed Courtlands Courgette Flower, Salad of Chargrilled Courgette, Basil, Hazelnut & Twineham Grange. This prettily presented dish turned me from a courgette sceptic into a complete convert. It was rich without being overpowering, and each mouthful was packed with a full spectrum of flavour. Mum’s Lamb Rump, Ratatouille, Pistou, Tapenade and

Salad arrived looking Michelin-star-ready – her comments centred around the tenderness of the meat and the harmonious contrast between the locally-sourced lamb and the tapenade. Our desserts, a Blackcurrant & Rosemary Cheesecake and a classic Sticky Toffee Pudding were the perfect sweet finale – not a note of flavour out of place. With food this consistently good, it’s no surprise that The Cat Inn won Best Sussex Eating Experience at the 2012/2013 Sussex Food and Drink Awards and is once again a finalist this year. Add four luxuriously appointed rooms and an autumn line-up of elegant Wine Dinners into the mix (check the website for dates), and you might just have a recipe for the purrfect country pub. .

Food & dRinK

My great friend Jonathan said I was being ridiculous when I asked him what he thought was a reasonable number of lengths to swim in the local pool. “Don’t be daft,” he said. “You might as well want to know what’s a reasonable length for a piece of string.” Yes. But I do think there’s a reasonable length for a piece of string, just as I think there’s a reasonable size for a courgette. It depends on your experience in the kitchen, your appetite, liking for courgettes, the number of people you are catering for, and indeed the look and feel of the courgettes. Here’s a recipe for a well-cooked and buttery vegetable when nowadays more or less everything is al dente.

Food, glorious food! When the courgette chunks have begun to break up, binding everything together,

check the seasoning and serve. Mushy Courgettes (serves 4)

800g courgettes, 100g of butter 4 garlic cloves, peeled and very finely chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. Top and tail the courgettes, then cut them in half

horizontally, then into four vertically, and finally cut them up into equal sized chunks. Your average reasonably sized courgette should produce about 48 chunks.

2. On a gentle heat, melt the butter

and sweat the garlic (making sure that it doesn’t brown or burn). Add the courgettes, season carefully, and toss them in the garlicky butter. Cover and continue cooking gently.

3. Cook for about 20 minutes,

checking and stirring every 5 minutes or so. When some of the courgette chunks have begun to break up, binding everything together, check the seasoning and serve.

richard Beeching:

axeman from East Grinstead The

A household name in the early 1960s, rail cuts across the country. “Resign!” opposition MPs shouted, in “a mounting storm of indignation,” when Transport Secretary Ernest Marples announced the appointment. Richard Beeching, a physicist with little railway experience, would be head of British Rail, with a salary of £24,000, more than double that of the Prime Minister. One MP asked: Was the high wage to make up for Beeching having to “carry out the very unpopular task of cutting British Railways services by 20 per cent?” It was well known the government was planning cuts to the railway, as it was losing huge amounts of money. “Prime Minister Harold Macmillan was determined the situation must alter,” Ian Hislop said in a recent BBC documentary. “He wanted the railways to run like a business, and pay for themselves.” Marples agreed and brought in Beeching, who was also in favour of cuts. Known as Dick to his friends, Richard Beeching was a portly 6’2”, with a relaxed manner, and a face which gave “no signs of worry or pressure or of searing ambition,” biographer Richard Hardy says. Beeching enjoyed detective novels, golf, gardening, painting, and cooking. “He smoked incessantly, and if there was a drink he liked better than a gin and water, it was a gin and gin,” Hardy says. Beeching rarely exercised, “except when Ernest Marples marched him off into the Sussex countryside.” The pair were good friends, and “would walk together in the country, deep in conversation,” Hardy says. continued on next page

Beeching moved to East Grinstead in 1958, living with his wife Ella on Lewes Road for the rest of his life. (He died in the town hospital in 1985). On work days, Beeching would drive to East Grinstead station to catch the 8.35 to Victoria, returning on the 6.10. Another commuter, Norman Sherry, remembers Beeching as “not a very sociable sort of fellow. He sat sort of hunched up in his coat and stayed there.”

abstract, not in any sense in a domineering or callous way, but almost as if they were machines.” However, Beeching did have a great sense of humour. Once, in a station toilet, he saw some graffiti: “Beeching is a prat!” He wrote underneath: “No I’m not.” He also “loved cartoons about himself,” Hardy writes. “The walls of his study were lined with framed copies.” Once, sitting by a little-used

stations and 5,000 miles of track. Born in 1913, Beeching obtained a PhD in Physics from Imperial College, worked in the Ministry of Supply during World War II, then moved to chemical company ICI, “where he had a role in the early years of the development of man-made fibres,” The Times says. He rose quickly within ICI, and “was considered one of the most brilliant business brains in the country,” Hislop said. Though a gifted analyst, Beeching struggled to understand human behaviour and motivations. Hardy notes he “seemed to regard men in the

railway line with his chauffeur, Beeching said: “I know you don’t agree with my policies on closures, but let’s wait and see the next train and I’ll bet you a shilling there are no more than five passengers on the train.” Hardy writes: “Charles immediately took him up, the train came by and eagerly, like children, the two men leaning against the fence looked for – and counted – the solitary passenger. Charles lost his bet and Beeching, grinning from ear to ear, picked up the shilling.’” Beeching spent two years preparing his report on rail cuts,

which was based on a sevenday study of railway traffic. It showed that one half of the network carried 19 times as many passengers as the other half, and the less-used half didn’t come close to covering its costs. “Beeching now felt he had the evidence to justify the policy that he and Marples had intended to implement from the start: mass closure,” Hislop said. On 26th March 1963, Beeching released his report, telling journalists: “There is a great emotional upsurge every time we propose to close a service. A week afterwards, it has all died away.” However, “this time, he added with a smile, it might take a little longer,” The Times said. Beeching recommended closing 2,100 stations and 5,000 miles of track. Sparsely populated areas were the worst hit, particularly Wales, Scotland, the North East, Cornwall and Devon. Cuts in Sussex included the line between Three Bridges and Groombridge via East Grinstead, with stations lost at Rowfant, Forest Row, and Hartfield. The line from East Grinstead to Groombridge has become a footpath, while part of the route towards Forest Row is now a road called Beeching Way. “Local legend has it that only at the last minute was [the name] changed from Beeching Cut,” The Times says. www.sussexliving.com

Beeching cut the line from Shoreham to Christ’s Hospital, closing stations at Steyning, Partridge Green, and West Grinstead. He also axed the line from Haywards Heath to Horsted Keynes via Ardingly, and one from Eridge to Polegate. Local opinion of the cuts was much the same as the rest of the country: “people weren’t pleased about it,” Norman Sherry says. Some admired Beeching as “a living symbol of thrusting New Britain. In the early sixties, to ‘do a Beeching’ became flattering shorthand for ruthless management efficiency,” Andrew Marr writes. In early 1969, the Beatles’ company, Apple, was losing vast amounts of money, and they approached Dr Beeching to sort things out. Beatles biographer Philip Norman says Beeching “listened sympathetically to the tales of chaos and then offered one wise – and prophetic – recommendation: ‘Get back to making records.’” Though he had his admirers, Beeching was not a popular figure and will forever be “enshrined in British folklore as a mad axeman”, says Hislop. That said, Beeching had no actual power to close any passenger line: he could only recommend closure to ministers. As Marples said: “Beeching’s job was, very strictly, to identify the financial case for closure, and leave it to politicians to decide whether there was a social case for keeping a station open.” British Rail’s ‘mad axeman’ was only doing his job.

business to business

A partnership of business groups, residents’ associations, large employers and councils, Haywards Heath Town Team aims to bring the community together, stimulate the retail economy, attract inward investment and provide one job for every home in the town.

Haywards Heath Town Team LIVE Typical of the positive vibes the Town Team is creating is the news that the largest UK healthcare charity, Nuffield, is committed to invest in the town. This has resulted in the purchase of a £64,000 image intensifier, expanding the hospitals’ pain management and spinal surgery practices. The management team is also reviewing the possibility of expanding diagnostic services at the site (including MRI), and is conducting a review of potential new services, ranging from holmium laser treatments for kidney stones to the introduction of new cancer services, all of which could result in significant investment, providing roles for clinical and scientific professionals. Plans for a £7.5 million redevelopment at The Orchards are underway, with the first phase due to start at the beginning of 2014, to modernise shop fronts to meet current retailer requirements. There’s already news of prospective tenants, including prestigious High Street names, lining up to move in. Getting the message across that Haywards Heath is great has been helped by the just-launched Local Loyalty promotional card, sponsored by The Birch Hotel, to attract new shoppers to the Town. News of available investment opportunities, as well as jobs, are

Retailers and businesses want to move here, people want to live here, so

help us to help YOU – let’s make our town great!

now featured on the website – along with a system for advanced website booking of events, a ‘oneclick’ service to the community, as well as retail ‘special offers’ where customers print out a voucher and visit the participating store. The next Gavel-it, our LIVE community street auction, is on 5th October, and don’t forget our Christmas Festival Weekend on 23rd and 24th November, with day-long entertainment with bands, singers, dancers, school choirs and our Town Mayor switching on the Christmas lights – with Father Christmas and his

real reindeer! On Sunday, South Road will be closed and an Italian Market will join local stalls – with more entertainment to get us all into the right festive mood. Finally, a community interest company (CIC) has been set up, under which all the Town Team activities and town events will function. This will add to the weight of the Town Team, ensuring complete transparency and inclusivity for everyone.

The next all-town Update Briefing is on Thursday 17th October, so come and join YOUR Town Team. Contact Ruth de Mierre on 01444 453399, ruth@i-dmc.co.uk www.hhlive.org.uk

Dear Sussex Living… … Thanks to all the team at Sussex Living for putting together my advertorial in the August issue. The response has been amazing from clients old and new. Even long-term clients have said they have found it informative and interesting and have learnt more about what we offer. I have had such positive feedback and it has boosted all aspects of my business. Anita Hayman Tamarind Beauty Treatment Rooms & Sussex Beauty Training School, Burgess Hill … Today we presented a cheque to the East Sussex MNDA (Motor Neurone Disease Association) for the proceeds raised from John Broomfield Big Day Out fundraiser. I am delighted to say that we raised a magnificent sum of £14,671.41. Thanks to all at Sussex Living for your support – we couldn’t have done it without you. Sue Marshall (John Broomfield’s sister) … I’m really pleased with the latest advertorial (August 2013), and have had an enthusiastic response to it from all sorts of people! Lee took some lovely photos, and it was a pleasure to talk to Nicole and show her around the shop and workrooms. We really felt that she was genuinely interested in us and what we do. I will certainly continue to advertise with (and read) Sussex Living every month. Sarah Tampion-Lacey Sarah Lacey Dry Cleaning, Haywards Heath …Thank you for listing the Rotary Club of Burgess Hill and District’s Car Boot Sale at Oakmeeds School on August Bank Holiday Monday, and contributing to our success. £1,400 was raised which will assist the Rotary Club in its local and international projects. Annemarie Allen President, Rotary Club Burgess Hill and District

last word The

October is here and businesses in Mid Sussex as elsewhere are starting to focus on the Christmas trade. Just as well we managed to squeeze in a lovely mini-break in Cornwall before things get really busy! Talking of holidays, we recently had a little visitor at the Sussex Living office. While his owner took a week’s break, Buster, a cute little Yorkshire terrier (pictured above), charmed his way into everyone’s affections here, though it did seem to take him a few days to stop growling at Sonny… We were thrilled that Sussex Living was able to promote John Broomfield’s Big Day Out, which took place on Sunday 1st September. What a wonderful day for John and his family, the hundreds of local supporters who joined in and, of course, for cricket lovers. Over £14,000 was raised for MNDA (Motor Neurone Disease Association) – a truly staggering amount. Thanks to a kind invitation from Zero 51’s Roy Stannard, Tanis got to spend a very enjoyable afternoon at Plumpton Racecourse, in the glorious setting at the foot of the South Downs, on 10th September. Meeting Michael Malone, the new Chief Executive, seeing the new parade ring and sampling some great food and drink, including Hepworth & Co’s local beers, she had a very nice time. Wednesday 18th September saw us networking with over 40 local businesses, many of them new ones, at Open 4 Business in Haywards Heath, which is always a great event. It’s such a buzz to meet people we may only ever have spoken to on the phone, putting faces to names. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to catch up with what’s happening in the local business community. We can’t wait for the next event! Sussex Living magazine will be very Christmassy again this year – we’re working on our November and December issues now. Tanis is always available for a chat, so do please get in touch to find out how we can promote your business over the festive season.

beckyjoewells @sussexliving Thank you for the tweet about my show at the Chequer Mead Theatre in East Grinstead. Great magazine again this month as always.
