HAIR REPLACEMENT FOR HAIR LOSS Is your confidence affected by Alopecia, Baldness, Thinning Hair and Trichollotimania? Regain your confidence – Hair Loss doesn’t have to be a problem! Testimonial: “Thinning hair is no joke, as anyone who has suffered this confidence-buster will confirm – it is demeaning, plays havoc with your self-esteem and costs a fortune in ‘remedies’ that are full of promises but fail to deliver. I was in despair until I found a specialist in London who offered a hair-replacement solution which didn’t require a lottery-win to make it affordable. So, I signed up and within a couple of months began to experience a return to my former self. But, after a while my husband, who did the driving, began to shed a few hairs himself as he braved the M25 and south London for my monthly ‘fix’ – we then moved to Eastbourne, and I soon realised that the increased distance was to be the kiss of death for my solution. Driving through Eastbourne town last year, my husband exclaimed excitedly, “There’s a Hair Replacement Studio!” He stopped the car, I took the phone number, and wasted no time in making the call. I’ve never looked back. After a comprehensive consultation, Oscar set me up with my first appointment at which all my problems disappeared. I now have a full head of totally undetectable real hair which Oscar ‘doctors’ every six weeks or so, I did not have to win the lottery to pay for it, and I can drive myself there as it’s so local. My husband is ecstatic, my confidence is For a full consultation on how Oscars Hair and Beauty can help call: restored and my hair looks lovely (even if I say so myself!) a serious fire in 2014. The pier provides the setting for the annual four-day ‘Airbourne’ event – the world’s biggest seafront air show. A four-mile shingle beach, overlooked by picturesque Victorian hotels, runs from Sovereign Harbour in the east to Beachy Head in the west. The seafront also features the Napoleonic era Redoubt Fortress and military museum. Situated between the pier and the Wish Martello Tower, the 1930s bandstand is the busiest in Britain; with fireworks and proms every Wednesday – featuring everything from tribute acts to military bands.
Shopping in Eastbourne covers the spectrum – high street outlets in the Arndale Centre and quaint Victorian shopping streets in Little Chelsea, boutiques at the Enterprise Centre and designer shops around the harbour. The 4,000 acre Eastbourne Downland Estate provides a spectacular backdrop to the town and includes the Seven Sisters Country Park and the legendary chalk cliffs of Beachy Head with its 1902 Belle Tout lighthouse. No wonder Eastbourne is known as ‘the Empress of Watering Places’. l www.visiteastbourne.com

LOCAL WALK
SEAFORD TO
EASTBOURNE
WALK
With summer 2018 seemingly one of endless blue skies, it felt like a walk of grandiose proportions was required for August. We teamed Robert Veitch up with Seven Sisters fan, Beth Gumbrell, and sent them on a day long coastal epic
W
e departed Lewes Station beneath layers of thin cloud punctuated by polka dots of bright blue. Detraining at Bishoptone station, walk down the steps at the end of the platform, turning left on to Marine Parade. The long left hand curve straightens as it passes the former Buckle Inn and the imposing spectacle of Seaford Head fills the horizon. Wander along the promenade for 1½ miles, past Salts Recreation Ground and the Martello Tower, all the way to Splash Point. The Shoal is a meandering, community bench under-looking Seaford Head. Memorial plaques in the shape of sprats, sardines, herrings and mackerel adorn the furniture. Time to pause and absorb the surroundings. There’s no escaping the truth, the only way is up and the loose path swiftly evolves into downland grass.
After passing the golf course the path levels off at the 86m (271ft), summit. On the left is Seaford Head Air Navigation Beacon. It’s a pleasant stroll, with wonderful views of the journey ahead and the route already travelled. Beyond the ‘Buckle Church Burrowers’ sign the path enters a shallow valley on the run down to Hope Gap. On the day we visited, the area was inundated with people. After enquiring we discovered they were making a film, called Hope Gap. Beyond Hope Gap, the path arcs left around the headland, culminating in our county’s postcard to the globe. The view across Coastguard Cottages to the Seven Sisters and the distant Belle Tout is one of the finest panoramas in the UK; epic, cinematic, timeless and very English. There’s a bench by the path, and it’s worth resting the legs for a moment, to absorb the grandeur.
The view across Coastguard Cottages to the Seven Sisters and the distant Belle Tout is one of the finest panoramas Beyond the cottages, the path gives way to the shingle beach. Some tank traps from WWII remain in position. There’s no sensible way across the river so turn left and head inland. The path runs alongside The Cut, a navigation channel dug in 1846 to reduce flooding across Cuckmere Haven. Around 25 minutes later a gate opens into a car park, leading to the
A259. Cross the road, the bridge, then back across the road and through another gate. The path sits atop the levee and it’s just over a mile back to the beach. Our walk was punctuated with glances to the heavens as a Spitfire practiced aerial manoeuvres. Turning left as the sea appears over the shingle berm, walk amongst sea kale towards the base of Haven Brow. A white staircase rises through the chalk, steep steps that rapidly gain altitude. “A little slippery in places, even in the dry,” remarked Beth as she made her way up. Breathe deep and keep going as far as the stile, then beyond, to the summit of Haven Brow. According to Beth, “it’s as hard as it looks, but well worth it.” At 77m (253ft) it’s the highest of the sisters.

towards the sea, downhill to the RAF Bomber Command Memorial. The path veers left and downhill beside the memorial. Steep at first, “we could have abseiled down this,” claimed Beth. The gradient eases, veering left as the cliff edge approaches. The route strikes a line between summer flowers. After Whitebread Hole playing field, turn right on to the tarmac of Foyle Way, flanked by overgrown, black railings.
A great way to walk eleven hills in a day, and be rewarded with a palpable sense of achievement
The rollercoaster that follows is manna from heaven all the way. Haven Brow leads to Short Bottom, Short Brow, Limekiln Bottom, Rough Brow, Rough Bottom and Brass Point - names that fall off the page like characters in a Victorian novella. Climbs become easier as the body adjusts to the continual gradient change. “Don’t lose momentum on the ups, take smaller steps,” Beth advised. Brass Point leads to Gap Bottom, then Flagstaff Point, the Sarsen Stone and Flagstaff Bottom. Then comes the intruder, Flat Hill, the eighth sister is emerging as the landscape retreats at about 70cm a year. Flathill Bottom leads to Baily’s Hill, then Michel Dean and Went Hill Brow. Beyond Malcolm’s Gate, it’s downhill, past the houses to the car park at Birling Gap. In 1878 there were a dozen cottages here, several metres from the cliff edge. Today four remain. With 60% of the walk completed we stopped for tea and cake in the café. The ascent of Belle Tout begins by the red telephone box. It’s ¾ mile to the former lighthouse, built in 1832. Moved 17m (56ft) back from the precipice in 1999, it seems precariously close once again. “That edge is freaking me out,” exclaimed Beth, sensibly keeping well away from it. It’s downhill from Belle Tout, before the 1½ mile ascent of Beachy Head begins. The appearance of alpine bends indicates the summit of 162m (531ft) is close. Beyond the octagonal memorial is the trig point and south of that is The Compass Rose. From the Rose, walk
Arriving at the suburban fringe of Eastbourne, turn right onto the red brick of Dukes Drive. After 350m bear right by the brown sign, following Holywell Drive down to the Promenade. From here it’s a mile to the Wish Tower, past thatched shelters and multitudes of benches. After that, the bandstand is halfway to the pier and a whimsical, fairy tale journeys end. Hop up the steps to Grand Parade, turn left and walk 150m, past the Carpet Gardens. Cross the road at the pelican crossing and stroll along Terminus Road. Continue along Terminus Road in differing forms for half a mile, until the Victorian clock
tower of Eastbourne station is close enough to tell the time. Boarding the 16:38 from platform 1, we arrived back in Lewes, elated, a whisker after 5pm. “I love walking the Seven Sisters, it’s so scenic, so special,” reflected Beth. “Completing it this way is a great way to climb eleven hills in a day, and be rewarded with a palpable sense of achievement.” l We are very grateful to Robert Veitch for bringing us new and exciting local walks every month. Robert insists on testing all routes personally, making sure they are suitable for walking. Wondering how to entertain the family this weekend? Hanna Prince says have a go at bikepacking – the new trend sweeping Britain
I
magine all the excitement and thrill of backpacking without a heavy rucksack to worry about. That, in a nutshell, is bikepacking – a fusion of bike touring and backpacking currently taking the UK by storm. The wonderful thing about this brand new sport is that anybody can take part. All you need is a pair of wheels, panniers packed with lightweight camping gear and a sense of adventure. OFF THE BEATEN TRACK The secret to a good bikepacking adventure is to go wild. Avoid big roads and plan a route that follows bridleways, dirt tracks and country lanes. The South Downs Way is perfect bikepacking territory, but if you’re feeling intrepid then you can head further afield to explore the pebble beaches of East Devon, the forested shores of Lake Windermere or even the old estate paths on Scotland’s Isle of Mull. Hard-core bikepackers insist that wild camping (pitching your tent in a remote, free-of-charge spot) is essential to the experience – but wild camping has the disadvantage of being illegal everywhere in England apart from Dartmoor. There’s nothing wrong with cheating a little and cycling between campsites, particularly if you have the kids in tow and fancy a spot of overnight luxury. From coastal havens to secluded forest glens, there are plenty
HAVE BIKE, WILL TRAVEL of sites in Sussex and beyond that will give you that ‘off the beaten track’ feeling. LIGHTWEIGHT LIVING You don’t have to invest in specific bikepacking gear, but there are a few things that will make your life more
The wonderful thing about this brand new sport is that anybody can take part comfortable on an overnight trip. Take a couple of dry bags strapped to your bike, packed with essential equipment such as a lightweight tent or bivvy bag, sleeping bag, bike tools, sleeping mat and cooking kit. Warm, waterproof
outdoor clothing is a must, even if you’re planning a summer adventure – and don’t forget to take plenty of water. Try a practice ride with your kit strapped to your bike to check the balance and see how the extra weight affects the carrying of the bike. FAMILY FEELING With the right planning, bikepacking can be an adventure for the entire family. A child seat will be incompatible with the extra load on your bike, so younger kids will need a trailer. Make sure older children are comfortable with riding the distances you plan to cover, and pack plenty of extra warm gear and snacks to keep everyone happy. Keep your first adventure on the short side and incorporate plenty of play breaks. Fill that first trip with fun, and it could be the beginning of a hobby that will last a lifetime. l

In a dramatic lifestyle change, Ingrid Gottschalk left London for the beauty and calm of Greece. Finding her dream location on Ithaca overlooking the Ionian Sea, Ingrid built a seven-bedroom contemporary Greek villa, complete with mountain backdrop and stunning sea views

HOME TRUTHS PROPERTY New build stone seaside villa LOCATION Ithaca, Greece. “Living in Greek sunlight, you can get away with dazzling colours, which I love, especially the Indian silks I brought back from my travels.” ROOMS Hall, sitting room, two kitchen/ dining rooms, one alfresco, outdoor sitting room, seven bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, study and two large terraces. Ingrid’s favourite room? “I really like to watch passing boats from the upstairs sitting room and it is a peaceful room in which to read, cool in summer and cosy in winter.” BUILT 2013 PREVIOUS PROPERTY “We lived in a terrace house in West London,” says Ingrid.

The sound of goats’ bells, bird song and crickets enhance the soporific atmosphere surrounding the home and yoga retreat, built by Ingrid Gottschalk on Ithaca. Surrounded by olive groves, overlooking the azure blue sea and the mountains of Kefalonia, her contemporary style Greek home is set high above hidden beaches nestling far below. “It has been an eventful one and a half year project,” she says with a smile, explaining how even just finding the right location was a mission. Having been born and bred in Basel, Ingrid poured over the map of Europe and researched options in Asia and Italy, but finally decided to make her home in Greece. “Ithaca has a lot in its favour. It is still comparatively unspoilt and only accessible by ferry or boat taxi.” Finding a site with building permission is not for the faint hearted, but Ingrid is clearly a woman with determination.

KITCHEN The main kitchen is a blend of high tech chrome surfaces and some antique pieces like the teak Indian cupboard mixed with quirky bits like the pendent fitting. The table base was made from the carpenter’s bench he left behind, with a thick glass top added
Her exacting brief to the local agent was to find her “a site by the sea, not in a village but in an isolated spot with a breathtaking view. I had no desire to renovate an old building,” she explains, “so when the agent rang to say he had found me the right site with planning permission miles from anywhere, it was my best day ever.” Slightly concerned about a huge rock sitting in the middle of the site, she sought out the advice of a local engineer. “Happily he assured me we could break up the rock and use the stones to build the house, which to me sounded like a great ecological solution.” Pooling ideas, Ingrid and her engineer designed the house as two separate entities, both angled to enjoy the dazzling sea view. One part houses Ingrid’s bedroom and the indoor kitchen cum dining room and the other is a guest wing with a yoga room on the ground floor and a colourful sitting room on the floor above, which opens onto a spacious terrace. The two are linked by paved terraces at different levels shaded by a bamboo awning, which also provides shade for the alfresco kitchen and sitting room. “In summer the Greeks live outside,” Ingrid says, “and this is where I do most of my entertaining.”

Ingrid fell in love with Greece, and yoga, after attending a spa weekend there –a birthday present from a friend. “After unpacking, I sauntered into the gym and joined a stretch class, which was surprisingly peaceful and invigorating. Only after leaving the class did I realise I had just attended a Hatha Yoga class.” Ingrid smiles a peaceful smile, which has become the hallmark of the atmosphere surrounding her new home. “Building a house in Greece, I decided to adhere to the local style which is fairly rustic and always includes lots of courtyards, balconies and terraces. Beamed wooden ceilings in dark cedar are a typical feature of the old Greek vernacular, which I used outside, but for a lighter more contemporary look inside, I chose to lime wash all the interior wood with a light chalky grey.”
DINING ROOM The dining room has an arched ceiling which keeps the room cool. Bespoke box storage was made locally with doors painted alternatively in bright colours. The lanterns came from Athens

“Greeks also like to use free flowing sculptured concrete shapes, painted white, so for some features, like the staircase balustrade and the outdoor kitchen we copied them,” says Ingrid. “Some floors were left as natural cement, polished to look like stone, another Greek tradition.” The interiors are a refreshing blend of monochrome colour schemes brought to life with pops of bright colour. Several rooms are filled with modern art collected by Ingrid and some favourite furniture pieces including the sofas, came from her London home. Other rooms positively dazzle with

Often visited by her family, including her three daughters, Rebecca, Helen and Maximiliane, Ingrid loves hosting guests in her home at all times of the year. Far from looking weary, she clearly enjoys her abundant change of lifestyle. It is a far cry from her stressful days in the city. “We often party and play card games in the evening,” Ingrid’s sun bronzed face shines with health and wholesomeness. “The food here is organic, which is one reason we all feel so energetic,” she suggests. “Many of my guests say it is not possible to stay here and not leave feeling refreshed. That gives me a sense of real satisfaction.” l Photos: Robert Sanderson / Narratives Styling & Writing: Maggie Colvin/Narratives © narratives.co.uk

BOOK REVIEW
Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest
BONE MUSIC
MY NAME IS LEON
THIS IS GOING TO HURT
This weaves together the scant historical information we have about the young Genghis Khan, and a thirteenth century text. The culture and beliefs of the people of Mongolia of this time is very different to the way we view the world, and it is generally accepted that shape-shifting is fact, shamans have real powers, and killing people is normal. Nevertheless, this is the story of two boys’ obsession with the same girl, and the havoc it creates. His father arranged his marriage to the
Leon has an inadequate mother who simply can’t cope with parenthood. When she has a second child, Jake, by a different father, it all becomes too much. Nine-year-old Leon manages as best he can for some time, but eventually the neglect becomes all too apparent and the two boys are taken into care. They go to a motherly woman called Maureen, but as time goes by and it’s clear Leon’s mother isn’t coming back any time soon, Jake is put up for adoption. The trouble is,
A wonderful book about the life and times of a junior obstetric doctor, full of dark humour that will make you laugh out loud. The sheer exhaustion of the job comes across very clearly. It’s a career full of catastrophes and miracles, with a lot of sheer grind in between. Nevertheless, it is one of the funniest books I have ever read. For instance; “Down in A&E around 11pm to review a patient, and thumbing through Twitter while I work up the strength to see her. There’s a big news story
by Katherine Roberts
This is the story of two boys’ obsession with the same girl, and the havoc it creates beautiful Bortë, but he was poisoned by the Tartars. His friendship with his blood-brother Jamukha turns sour, and the two become enemies raising huge armies. The book is written from three different viewpoints – Khan’s, his wife Bortë’s, and Jamukha’s. Although this might sound repetitive it isn’t, because all three have distinct characters and see things very differently. The music of the Mongolian people is still important to this day, haunting and atmospheric, and the fiddle that Bortë makes from the skull of her beloved pet deer has strange powers. An intriguing and unusual read for young adults.
by Kit de Waal
Leon is a bright boy, and his observations of the people around him are perceptive and moving Jake is white and a baby, and Leon is black and nine years old. This is the 1980s, and no one wants Leon. And then Maureen is taken ill, and Leon has to go and stay with Sylvia. Eventually he finds friends among the elderly allotment holders, who introduce him to gardening. Leon is a bright boy, and his observations of the people around him are perceptive and moving. All the characters are rounded and complex, this imbues the book with an authenticity that makes it compulsive reading. Funny, heart-rending and sad, it was short-listed for several awards.
by Adam Kay
It is one of the funniest books I have ever read breaking. ‘Oh Christ,’ I gasp. ‘Michael Jackson’s dead!’ One of the nurses sighs and stands up. ‘Which cubicle?” It’s not a book for the faint-hearted, as there are plenty of graphic descriptions of medical procedures. And just as you’re coming to the end of it, and wishing you weren’t because your ribs are aching from laughing, the title of the book becomes a reality. You find out why Adam Kay decided to leave the medical profession altogether, and it isn’t a feel-good story. This is a book with a kick in the tail, which makes it a worthy winner of the many awards it has received. The best book I’ve read in a long time.

PETS
It’s a Dog’s Life This month, Rolo the Border Terrier ponders how dogs can all be cut from the same cloth, but be so different!
N
ow I might be a dog of limited understanding, but it seems to me that a lot of trouble is caused in this world by perceived differences between people, which is a bit odd. Consider dogs. Bearing in mind we are all descended from a common ancestor who spent a lot of time howling at the moon, we are quite a diverse bunch. This is perfectly illustrated if you happen to have a Chihuahua and a Great Dane in the same room. One is a feisty, independent, free thinker, and the other is affectionate, gentle and loves people, although probably not as convenient if they want to sit on your lap. Then there’s me and my apprentice, Teddy. We are both Border Terriers but we don’t even look alike. Teds is about a third bigger and is quite sturdy. It’s a bit like having my own bodyguard, which has its uses. Teds has got the traditional Border Terrier otter shaped head, although why he needs that when
he’s a dog and not an otter, is quite frankly beyond me. My nose is quite long and pointy, which, to quote a rather sinister canine from folk tales, is ‘all the better to sniff you with my dear’! It’s also handy for sticking through small gaps and getting into the corner of popcorn packets which just demonstrates my high level of evolution.
We are both Border Terriers but we don’t even look alike Even our behaviour is different. I’m definitely my own dog. I see the petty rules and restrictions imposed by ‘Them Indoors’ as a framework around which to manoeuvre and I don’t really care if they get cross – what’s the worst they can do? Teddy, on the other hand,
is a people pleaser and cannot cope if he is not in favour. He gets so stressed by my disobedience that sometimes he obeys commands that he knows are intended for me. He is also a dog who likes a lie-in and needs to be coaxed out of his bed in stages. It takes him about half an hour to get downstairs in the morning, which is only marginally quicker than ‘Her Indoors’. Honestly, you’d never guess I was the dog that was ten years older. My attitude to other dog breeds has nothing to do with difference but is shaped by one simple criteria, whether I like them or not. I know this is a bit subjective and might be influenced by things like the way they look at me or their smell, but I apply it across the board; big, small, flat faced, long ears, male, female, young or old. And if it all gets out of hand in the doggy diplomacy department then there’s always ‘Her Indoors’ to sort it out. I don’t even discriminate between species; I apply the universal rule of ‘what can they offer me?’ across the board. I’m a great champion of diversity! l

NATURAL LIVING
THE
RIPPLES OF TIME
Escaping the rush of modern life, Ruth Lawrence found a moment of peace, along with some surprising history at Friston Pond
S
earching for a quiet spot to recharge after being immersed in crowds of tourists at Birling Gap, I pulled over at Friston Pond, which soon revealed a surprising history and a story of determined restoration. The pond predates Domesday. Villagers watered their livestock from its shallow depths a thousand years ago and it would have been a gathering place for village gossip and worshippers spilling from the adjacent church on Sundays. In continued use for centuries, a photo of the pond from a 1960s edition of an environmental magazine shows it in a still healthy state, ringed by reeds, a light breeze rippling its weed-clear surface. Fast forward four decades to find the pond in a sorrier state; like village ponds across the country, it was contaminated with intrusive weeds, in this case, Australian Stone Crop, which out-competes native species and reduces light levels in the water. After an extensive assessment, the pond was awarded a grant from the Sustainable Communities Fund of the South Downs National Park Authority and work began on its rejuvenation. During the
last three weeks of 2012, the pond was pumped out, de-silted and fitted with new gullies. Aquatic samples were reinstated and wildlife that had been temporarily housed in holding tanks was returned home. It is the first pond in the country to be made an historic monument; a title which speaks of its relationship with people over the centuries. Although villagers may no longer need to water horses or wash sheep within its confines, the pond now has a different role to play with its human visitors. With interpretation boards and a dipping platform, the pond is a restful haven for walkers and those simply wanting
Dragonflies colour the air and luxuriant marsh plants attract insects, in turn encouraging birds and bats to visit
to escape the car for half an hour to sit under the towering willow by the bank. Knowing the age and history of the pond lent another dimension to our visit; although traffic zipped past, it was easy to imagine the generations of villagers who would have lingered in exactly the same spot, horses tethered nearby or sheep drinking from the still waters. Now, dragonflies colour the air and luxuriant marsh plants attract insects, in turn encouraging birds and bats to visit. The pond has turned full circle since its creation a millennia ago, from centrepiece of a community to dereliction and now regenerated as a thriving ecosystem, it attracts life once again. These small, rich habitats are increasingly necessary for the wellbeing of living creatures, ourselves included. Friston Pond’s designation as an historic monument was a timely reminder of its continued importance in a changing world. l

THE MONTH OF AUGUST Long, lazy summer days with picnics, tall drinks to while away the warm evenings sitting outside and stargazing; Michelle Brett details all that August has to offer
T
he idea of August is mesmerising, but whilst temperatures are dependably warm, the energy of the heat and humidity can often lead to thunder, lightning and torrential rain. The word August comes from the Latin word augustus, meaning ‘consecrated’ or ‘venerable’. In 8 BC, the Roman Senate honoured Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, by changing the name of the month to ‘Augustus’.
In the Garden Now is the time to be collecting the seed pods for plants that you’re planning to reseed, and of course – those that you don’t want to reseed! Harvesting is the main job in the vegetable plot; gather regularly and frequently to benefit from enjoying the sweetest and most tender of the crop before it over-ripens. Once the lavender has finished flowering, trim it back to stop it growing leggy. Cut back and mow any wild flowering meadows but leave the clippings to reseed. It may seem early, but now’s the time to plan and order your spring flowering bulbs – they may not be available later in the season!
In the Kitchen Make the most of the summer produce sweetcorn, tomatoes, beetroot, peppers are all in season along with French and runner beans. Plums are at their best in August and the first figs and melons start to ripen along with berries, apricots and peaches. A veritable feast for the eyes, taste buds and stomach! From the hedgerows, pick wild blackberries for they have the complexity of flavour that is completely lacking in cultivated types. Look for berries with a fat, black shine to get a blast of fully ripe sweetness! Cobnuts are also ready to be picked – as well as elderberries. From the sea, fish in season include plaice, mackerel,
sardines and there is plenty of seafood being caught along our coast including squid, crab, lobster and scallops.
Facts and Figures The August days are drawing in more as the month continues, and by the end of the month we’ll have lost another one hour and forty-six minutes, to make the daylight thirteen hours and thirty-eight minutes. But for the swimmers amongst us, the sea temperature in Sussex continues on its rise and this month can reach 16.9°. Make the most of it, as after next month it will start to drop again! The birth flower of August is the Gladiolus (from Latin, the diminutive of gladius, a
sword - plural gladioli), and the birth stone is Peridot. A lime green stone believed to bring power and influence to its wearer. If you’ve an August birthday, then you’ll have been born under either the Leo or Virgo zodiac sign, and share the month with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Barack Obama (who were both born on the 4th), Sean Connery (25th), Roger Federer (8th) and Stephen Fry (24th) to name a few!
Have a wonderful August!

THE INTERVIEW
H
usband and wife partnership Charles Thomson and Yolanda Beer are a serendipitous example of how two distinctly different art forms can live and work side by side in harmony. For the past thirty years, furniture maker Charles and ceramic artist Yolanda have designed and crafted beautiful and innovative creations at their workshop and studio near Mayfield. Born into a tea-growing family in Ceylon, Charles spent his childhood in South East England. He soon developed an interest in woodwork and his burgeoning talent received encouragement from a sympathetic woodwork teacher. He then spent a year at college in London followed by further study in High Wycombe – a hotbed of furniture production. After dabbling in sculpture, theatre set-making and exhibition work with the Institute of Contemporary Arts, he moved to Brighton and became involved in boat building. While there, he fell in with a group of Antipodeans who had bought an old Norwegian cargo ship which they planned to

PARTNERSHIP renovate, sail to Australia and set up as a conference centre. “Sadly, the boat only got as far as Portsmouth,” says Charles. “But I decided to go to Australia anyway, followed by New Zealand and then three years in Japan.” In 1981 he returned to Sussex and spent the next four years renovating and converting a derelict barn into what is now both their home and workplace. Having initially set up as a picture framer, he subsequently switched to furniture making.
I have always loved trees and wood, especially walnut, ash, cherry and oak. One day I plan to make a full cabinet in solid walnut 52 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2018
“My most satisfying work is creating tree-like cluster chairs, tables and lamp standards; using a single piece of wood split and splayed to create an elegant but very strong design – which is now registered. I have always loved trees and wood, especially walnut, ash, cherry and oak. One day I plan to make a full cabinet in solid walnut.” For her part, Yolande has always loved drawing. Having grown up within a passionately artistic family in Newick, she did a degree course in 3D Design - originally to study jewellery. “I became frustrated that it took so long to reach the end product,” says Yolande. “So, I switched to ceramics, where I found a suitable medium to apply my figure drawing.” After graduating, Yolanda received a scholarship to work in Japan – a country that
has great respect for ceramics. There she acquired a working knowledge of Japanese and a taste for their fluid style of decoration. Her specialisation is in brightly-coloured earthenware, blue and white stoneware and carved figurative pieces. Japan proved to be the catalyst that brought Yolanda and Charles together. “Malcolm Rose, a mutual friend and local harpsichord maker, first introduced us – as we had both spent time in Japan.” Yolanda explains, “We married in 1988 and, after working under the stairs for a while, Charles built me a studio in the garden.” In tandem with her making, Yolande has always taught ceramics; both at schools and through private lessons – until she finally decided to retire from teaching two years ago to concentrate on her own work. Rooted in the natural world of wood and clay, they both draw inspiration from the Sussex countryside all around them. l

BLOOMING TIMES
Water wise
Nothing is more essential to life than water! By collecting rainwater and re-cycling household water, Flo Whitaker tells us how gardeners can help to conserve this precious resource
I
f all the water on earth could be poured into a 4 litre container, the amount available for immediate human consumption would only fill a tablespoon. Most of the world’s water is salty or frozen. The global population has now reached 7.6 billion, but there is no more water now than there was when our planet was formed. Water has never been in such demand – we gardeners can help with its conservation. Plants wilt for many reasons, so don’t automatically reach for the hosepipe if a plant has flopped. Used incorrectly, pest and disease sprays makes foliage shrivel and wilt. An infestation of aphids, slugs or vine weevil grubs will also cause a plant to collapse spectacularly. Perversely, overwatered plants exhibit symptoms similar to under-watered ones. If a potted plant looks unhappy, turn it out of the container and check the soil before you water. Drainage holes in patio pots sometimes get blocked,
54 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2018
the compost surface may appear dry, but if you dig down 10 cms it may be foul-smelling and wringing wet. Border plants can also become waterlogged. A leaking downpipe that went undetected during winter, slowly turned one of my flowerbeds into a bog. Rainwater butts are the obvious way to conserve water. In a cottage garden setting, a collection of vintage watering cans arranged around a traditional barrel-shaped water butt is both practical and ornamental. Modern-style rainwater tanks look boringly functional but they’re cleverly designed to be used in awkward spaces where barrels won’t fit. Some can be attached vertically to a wall; their super-slim In a cottage garden setting, design means they a collection of vintage won’t encroach over watering cans arranged a path or driveway. Remember, it’s easy around a traditional barrelto underestimate shaped water butt is both the weight of water! practical and ornamental Unless you are competent at DIY, (my father reckoned that DIY meant ‘Don’t Involve Yourself’) it’s best to ask a tradesperson to install rainwater tanks, especially if sturdy fixings or changes to guttering and pipework are required. Some household wastewater can be recycled in the garden. Well-established trees and shrubs will tolerate small quantities of detergent; the occasional drench of bath, shower or washing-up water will cause no harm. However, only use clean water on seedlings, young plants or leafy vegetables, (e.g. lettuce, cabbage, spinach) and never use dishwasher water to irrigate plants – it’s far too salty. Houseplants love the pure, room temperature water from dehumidifiers and (cooled!) excess boiled water from a kettle. Summer-planted containers usually require daily watering. For border plants, watering little and often is not advisable as this will only dampen the soil surface. Roots, sensing the moisture, will migrate upwards into the hotter top layer of soil, making them vulnerable to drought. Better to generously water fortnightly – the water will soak down to the roots where it will do real good. l

PLANTING PHILANTHROPY In 2016 award-winning garden designer, TV presenter and planting expert, Juliet Sargeant, won her biggest accolade yet: gold at the Chelsea Flower Show. Kathy Brown caught up with her to find out about life after Chelsea and the inspiration behind her amazing work
G
rowing up in leafy Surrey and being allowed to roam and play freely in the countryside with her friends, as well as being given a corner of the family garden to look after, Juliet’s love of the outdoors was sown from a young age, “I made a very early connection with the landscape and have always associated it with fun, freedom and relaxation.” With a strong interest in the wider social benefits of gardening and landscape, in 2016 Juliet exhibited a social campaign garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, in the hope of inspiring conversation and action around modern day slavery. Its bright front doors and illustrative planting was representative of the streets where we all live, but there was a darker metaphorical centre to the garden which hinted at a hidden reality – people still being kept in captivity. 56 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2018
You’d think that such an impactful project, which brought national attention to a prevalent social issue, would have been stressful, but Juliet took it all in her stride. “I can honestly say that it was an amazing experience throughout and that is thanks to the
I love seeing them becoming less nervous about plants and starting to connect with their gardens and with nature fantastic team that supported the Modern Slavery Project. Doing any Chelsea Garden is the dream for most garden designers, but to have such an interesting challenge to undertake with dedicated people was wonderful.” Now two years on from her Chelsea win and with a green-fingered career
in full blossom, Juliet is involved in multiple projects and looking forward to the coming months. “I’m working with the ‘Chelsea 2020 Forest Garden’ team, who want to introduce people to the idea of growing their food in a natural and sustainable way. I’m also opening a new office in Hurstpierpoint, and my eyes have been opened to the lovely landscape of Sussex. I don’t think I’ll ever stop designing gardens: it’s what I love most about my job. Every client has different requirements and I love seeing them becoming less nervous about plants and starting to connect with their gardens and with nature.” Juliet also continues to teach about plants at her garden school; and will be joining the panel on the popular BBC Radio Sussex gardening show, Digit. “It will be a brilliant opportunity to demystify gardening and encourage more people to get involved.” On 21st September, Juliet will be giving a talk at South Downs Nurseries in support of much-loved local charity, St Peter & St James Hospice. You can hear more of her inspiring story and how she planted her way to gold, as well as her tips and tricks for creating your dream garden. Book your place at www.stpjhospice.org. l

200 miles from Chichester in the west to St Leonards in the east and reaches as far north as Horsham. There are also coastal stages through Worthing, Brighton & Hove and Eastbourne. The 26 fully described and mapped walks, ranging from 4 to 11 miles long, link the areas covered by the 12 hospices supporting people in Sussex. Before the event each team leader must download the iFootpath app and also download their chosen walk. On the day, teams will leave their start
point at 9am and follow the route on the app. Medals will be awarded to everyone who finishes their section. Kathy Gore OBE, Chair of Friends of Sussex Hospices, said, “Our hospices provide crucial support to families at extremely challenging times but they all rely on support from their local communities and so we’ve established the trail to help raise funds and awareness of their vital work.” Sue Korman, who devised the trail said: “The walks can create a real sense of camaraderie and goodwill and we’re delighted to be able to leave the trail as a permanent legacy of the work of Friends of Sussex Hospices.” The event will raise money for: Chestnut Tree House, Demelza Hospice Care for Children, St Barnabas, St Catherine’s, Hospice in the Weald, Martlets, Leo House at Home, St Michael’s, St Peter & St James, The Sussex Snowdrop Trust, St Wilfrid’s (Eastbourne) and St Wilfrid’s (Chichester) l To register for Walk The Hospice Trail visit: www.hospicestrail.co.uk/walk-the-trail-2018/ @hospicestrail #walkthetrail2018

PUZZLE PAGE
PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU
A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.
KAKURO
Kakuro puzzles resemble crosswords which use numbers instead of words. The aim of the game is to fill all the blank squares in the grid with only the numbers 1-9 so that the numbers you enter add up to the corresponding clues. When the grid is filled, the puzzle is complete.

CROSS CODE
Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

HOLIDAY HEALTH After our glorious summer here in the UK, many of us will be well-versed in looking after ourselves in the warmer weather. Sasha Kanal explores how we can stay fit and healthy this holiday

travelling companions as they are light – adding hardly any weight to your baggage allowance. They are a great and painless way to stretch in your villa or hotel room each morning. Using them is quick and convenient. Keep on walking. Who doesn’t 4 want to explore their surroundings on holiday? Wherever you are in the
world, discovering new vistas is a joy and essential for relaxation in my humble opinion. Pack some trainers or shoes that are easy to walk in and explore the old town, or castle or market. You’ll soon rack up your 10,000 steps and you won’t even notice!
Who doesn’t want to explore their surroundings on holiday?

Mini bar snacks. This is not an opportunity to raid the (usually extortionately expensive hotel mini bar) but a chance to use the cool fridge to refrigerate any healthy snacks you may have brought with you or you find on your travels. Fresh and unusual fruits from local markets are a better alternative to salty crisps and nuts any day!
New adventures. If you’re naturally 5 the adventurous kind, use your holiday as an opportunity to try new
activities and sports. Whether you’re in Greece or Guernsey, there will be water sports and activities such as horse riding on offer somewhere near you. Break out of your comfort zone (safely of course) and challenge yourself to learn a new skill. And you never know - far from a fleeting holiday romance, it could be something you continue once you’re back home. Safe and happy holidays from Body Buzz! l

But what about exercising safely in this hot weather and getting enough movement into your day to stay healthy whilst you’re on holiday? A holiday is just that and there should be no pressure to exercise unless you really want to. It’s about recuperating both physically and mentally. Unless you want to go hell for leather with your running, the key is to incorporate movement, exercise and healthy-ish ways naturally into your days. Here are a few ways to do just this:

WEDDINGS
Ring in the season of autumn weddings with Amy Newson’s handy guide to all you need to know about these special symbols of love
Rings that say... R
I LOVE YOU
ings, glorious rings… engagement, wedding and eternity – these rings all have one thing in common, love. Find out more about their stories, trends and meaning here. Engagements are usually sealed with a ring and in the past 100 years or so, that would have typically been with a diamond solitaire. Nowadays it’s becoming more and more popular to suit individual style and choose something that’s more unique and personal to the wearer. This important piece of jewellery symbolises love, commitment and your forthcoming union, and as you will most likely be wearing it for the rest of your life, it needs to be something you not just like, but love.
The romantic notion of these intertwined bands represent the soon-to-be husband and wife being forever ‘entangled in love’ It’s not just the world of clothes that changes from season to season, jewellery does too. For engagement rings this season, there is an abundance to choose from and while the classics, like the solitaire, are likely to always remain in style there’s no reason why
66 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2018
you can’t explore other options and find something that is really ‘you’. With engagement rings no longer being confined to clear diamonds, different gemstones with exciting colour accents can be explored. Opals are a dreamy alternative to diamonds, their mystical qualities and play with rainbow hues make them a beautiful, but less durable choice. Another stone to consider is the romantic red ruby, also known as ‘the gem of the heart’. This symbolises passion and adds a vintage sensibility and antique appeal to any look. Black diamonds have become hugely popular and add a real edge to your ensemble, which is why so many non-traditional brides are drawn to this dark stone. Vintage rings have also emerged as an engagement favourite. Edwardianinspired rings give a lovely intricacy and femininity. Explore navette shapes in white gold and platinum, with diamonds and coloured gems for a charming touch. Handcrafted antiques and vintage-inspired designs alike are easy to come across.

Traditionally, wedding rings are often a band of precious metal. The first example of this was found in Ancient Egypt, where braided rings of hemp, reeds, silver or gold where exchanged between wedded couples. This was worn on the third finger of the left hand, which many believed was directly connected to the heart by the ‘vena amoris’. For many the wedding band is an afterthought of the engagement ring, into which a lot of time and consideration is put. Until recently the material and style of the wedding band would be dictated by what the engagement ring was made from and what it looked like. For centuries yellow gold was the traditional metal that was used, for both men and women’s wedding bands. But over the past decade or so, white gold and rose gold as well as platinum have become more contemporary and popular choices of material. Today it’s all down to personal taste and style. You no longer have to match your wedding band to your engagement ring, it’s fine to mix and match as you like. There are some lovely rings that interlock with your engagement ring instead of being worn alongside it. The romantic notion of these intertwined
bands represent the soon-to-be husband and wife being forever ‘entangled in love’ – this on-trend design is symbolic and stunning. Men’s bands are perhaps not considered as much as women’s. They were never as intricate or stunning, but traditionally simple, gold bands. This style is slowly becoming less and less popular and ‘the one fits all’ idea is no longer applicable. Platinum is now becoming an increasingly popular choice, especially with a subdued matte finish. Rose gold is also a favourite and other more unusual combinations, such as cobalt and wood are making their way onto
many-a groom’s hand. The other significant ring in the world of love and commitment is the eternity ring. This ring is usually given by the husband to his wife to mark a significant anniversary and to symbolise never-ending love. Traditionally the stones go all the way around the band, but half-eternity rings are also popular as they provide a more comfortable wear. So there you have our guide to the world of rings, symbolising eternal love. It’s an important choice to make, so take your time to explore the wealth of rings on offer – and to find the perfect ones for you both. l

Wedding Angels
I
It’s not always easy to know what to do with little children at weddings, so Amy Newson explains how getting them involved in the ceremony is a perfect way to keep them happy. Plus, the adorable wedding photos will get everyone talking
t’s a lovely tradition to get children involved in wedding ceremonies. Not only will it keep them occupied and happy but will bring many a laugh when looking through the wedding photos over the years to come. When thinking about who to choose, the children of friends and family are the usual choice for filling the roles of pageboys, flower girls and bridesmaids. Traditionally pageboys are young male attendants at formal weddings, whose role is to carry the bride’s train (especially if it is a very long one). Though they are less and less common at modern weddings (as are bridal trains), it’s a lovely way to get young children involved in your wedding and to make them feel an important part of your special day. Being a ring bearer would be another task for a young boy and, being a ‘special’ page, he would carry the wedding rings for the bridal party and present them to the couple at the exchange of the rings part of the ceremony. A symbolic way to approach
72 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2018
this is for the boy to carry a satin cushion embroidered with rings, while the actual rings are kept for safekeeping with the best man, who, at most modern weddings has taken on the the ring bearer’s duties. Although pageboys and ring bearers are not often part of wedding ceremonies these days, flower girls still play a large role. Traditionally, and to this day, flower girls walk in front of the bride and carry a basket of flower petals, which they spread on
the floor in front of her. This tradition originates from Ancient Rome, where a young virgin would carry sheaths of wheat before the bride, a gesture that was supposed to bring wellbeing to the newlyweds. Wheat gave way to flowers over the course of time, though not before young girls carried garlic for the bride in the Middle Ages. When going through your list of friends and family’s children, it’s worth thinking about a couple of things before
For less formal weddings, it has recently become the norm to dress children down, so that they can comfortably enjoy the wedding day celebrations

SECTION SUBJECT asking them to take on the role. Age is an important factor, as very young children will find it difficult to manage some of the tasks. For flower girls, children over five should be suitable to carry out (and enjoy) the task of scattering the flower petals. As for pageboys, depending on the length and weight of the train, seven years or older should make them capable of the task – though older bridesmaids are now more often than not stepping in to do this. Older children can also help with seating guests and other last minute jobs that may occur. Once you have the ‘who’, it’s time to think about what to dress them in. This mainly depends on the formality of the wedding. For traditional weddings boys usually wear classic knickerbockers with cummerbunds and double-breasted shirts. Girls don full-skirted dresses complete with a sash and bow while frills decorate the collar and sleeves of their dress. Both girls and boys wear pale shoes with white socks or tights. For less formal weddings, it has recently become the norm to dress children down, so that they can comfortably enjoy the wedding day celebrations. Girls can be dressed in beautiful net, tulle or lace detailed skirts to make them fit for the perfect fairy tale wedding, while boys can be dressed down in handsome chinos with a crisp shirt and bow tie. Neutral pumps or even trainers are a popular choice for little pageboys, flower girls and bridesmaids, as these can be reused after the wedding and allows for comfortable playtime. Don’t think scruffy plimsolls but a light coloured shoe that complements their ensemble – and looks on trend too! Finally, a challenge you might face is if your bridesmaids are mixed ages. Find dresses that complement each other rather than matching entirely. Chic and simple designs are perfect for this occasion and will look lovely grouped together. Flower hair circlets also look stunning on all ages, such as floral head dresses made out of large blooms or even a dainty hair vine for a sophisticated touch. l

Mexican Sopa de Mariscos Experience the taste and flavour of Mexican cuisine with our seafood soup. Prepare in advance, to make it the perfect accompaniment for the last of the lazy, hazy summer evenings INGREDIENTS 3 whole sea bream scaled and gutted 24 cleaned mussels 5 tbsp olive oil 3 large banana shallots chopped 8 cloves garlic chopped 5 stalks celery chopped – use any leaves too 800g red and orange tomatoes chopped 2 fat red chillies chopped 4 large sprigs oregano 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp sea salt flakes 15g bunch fresh coriander (stalks removed) 2 small cooked brown crabs cleaned and cut into 4 pieces (ask the fishmonger to do this task) 18 whole raw prawns Use sustainable prawns, brown crab, mussels and gilt head bream or tilapia or other non-oily sustainable whole fish. TIP The soup can be prepared in advance to the point where all the seafood is added. Rather than making your own fish stock, you could buy 1 litre of stock from a good fishmonger and use fish fillets instead. METHOD 1 Take the heads off the fish and remove the fillets. small bones and cut each fillet in half across, cover and put in the fridge. 2 Put all the fish bones, carcass and heads in a large pan and cover with 1.25 litres of cold water and add a teaspoon of salt. Bring slowly to the boil then turn right down to barely a simmer for 30 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it settle for 20 minutes. Sit a sieve over a bowl, strain the stock and discard the bits caught in the sieve. 3 Wash the large pan and add the oil, heat gently and add the shallots, celery, garlic, tomatoes, chillies, oregano, half the coriander and season with pepper. SautĂŠ for 10 minutes without colouring.

5 Put the stock for the mussels on to boil and add them to the pan, put on the lid and cook for about 4 minutes or until they have all opened (discard any stubborn ones). Sit the sieve back over the bowl and strain the mussels, put them in a clean bowl and cover until serving.
7 When ready to serve, heat the mixture and add the crab and prawns for 3 minutes. Add the fish pieces and give another 3 minutes. Finally add the mussels and cook for another minute before folding in remaining coriander leaves. l

CHANGES TO TAX LAW Friday 6 July saw the publication of the draft finance bill for 2018/2019 which is expected to be enacted in the autumn. There are a few things that are quite interesting for certain tax payers in some circumstances. Melanie Richards explains further ALLOWING ENTREPRENEURS’ RELIEF (ER) ON GAINS MADE BEFORE DILUTION Until now, anyone who held more than 5% of the issued share capital of a company (and who met other qualifying conditions) was entitled to claim ER on the sale of those shares. This allowed them to pay capital gains tax at 10% on the disposal of those shares. At the point where a shareholder held less than 5% of the shares, that individual would lose the right to ER and this can be expensive. For a start-up or a company with quite a few investors, this could be a problem, as most companies raise funds by issuing shares. Diluting their investors’ shareholdings below 5% is not attractive to the investors or the company and therefore limits what the company might be able to do to raise funds. Now from 6 April 2019, individuals who are diluted below the 5% threshold after a fundraising which is carried out after 6 April 2019, will be able to elect for their Entrepreneurs’ relief to be crystallised at the point of dilution. These individuals will also be allowed to defer any tax due until they realise their investment on sale or exit. This could be a worthwhile election to make. STAMP DUTY LAND TAX (SDLT) Historically, the transfer document and the related SDLT on the purchase of a property was payable to HMRC within 30 days of the transaction. This deadline is now being reduced to 14 days and it will apply to transactions in England and Northern Ireland with a completion date of 1 March 2019 onwards. PENALTIES AND INTEREST ON TAX PAID LATE The draft legislation includes changes to the interest payable on late payments by tax payers and repayments of tax from
HMRC. There will also be a new penalty regime for the late payment of tax, which until now has mainly attracted interest only. Interest on VAT will be brought broadly into line with interest on income tax and capital gains tax. There will be special rules to prevent repayment interest from being paid in respect of tax returns which are under enquiry and where taxpayers have returns that are late being filed, and a new late payment penalty regime will be introduced for income tax, capital gains tax, corporation tax and VAT. There will be two elements: • A penalty payable on tax that is more than 15 days late then, • A second penalty if any tax remains after 30 days. There is no information at the moment on what the penalties will be or how they will be levied, but we will no doubt hear more on this in the next few weeks. MAKING TAX DIGITAL (MTD) On 13 July, HMRC issued more guidance to businesses on MTD. The updated guidance can be found at www.gov. uk/government/publications/vat-notice-70022-makingtax-digital-for-vat. As part of MTD from 1 April 2019, businesses registered for VAT with a taxable turnover above the VAT registration threshold of £85,000 will need to keep VAT records digitally and file their VAT returns using MTD compatible software. This will start from their first VAT period starting on or after 1 April 2019. Many business owners are not aware of the deadline and it is likely that a lot of people will be caught out. There are a significant number of business owners still using manual records and the changeover to a digital accounts package is going to be challenging. There are various packages available online which can get you started. PC Mag carried out a review of online packages which you can find here uk.pcmag.com/software/32761/guide/the-bestsmall-business-accounting-software-of-2018 It will take time for users to get a hang of new software packages and we will wait to see how it goes, but I can’t imagine that HMRC will be able to cope initially – there is going to be lots of swearing across the UK as people try to file their new computerised VAT return online! l Money Matters is written by Melanie Richardson - Managing Partner Swindells LLP Chartered Accountants & Chartered Tax Advisers Tel: 01825 763366 As individual circumstances vary considerably from person to person, the views expressed in this article are meant only as a general guide, and any specific advice required should be sought from your own professional adviser or by contacting the writer at her place of work.
