Where has 2017 gone? It’s behind you! We’re officially allowed to say that Christmas is in full swing and with pantomime being such an integral part of the festivities now, we looked into where it all began. From page 36, Robert Veitch explores panto origins and how we ended up with amongst other things a gent as a dame and a leading man who is really a leading lady. Sticking with the festive theme, this issue is packed full of interesting historical facts about Christmas traditions from Advent calendars to Medieval feasts, decorations and Boxing Day. Listed from page 12 we also have a variety of local church services and Carol concerts. In the office we’ve been having a right old carry on researching Talbot Rothwell, a Sussex resident who penned 20 of the iconic Carry On films. On page 74 we tell his story from being a prisoner of war to the end of his long and prolific career in Worthing. This is also the time of year when our thoughts turn to supporting those in need. The West Sussex North branch of the MND Association tell us how they are assisting with care of local people and are raising funds to support research. Turn to page 72 to read more and see if you are able to help. A chance discovery led Joy Madgwick to a fascinating new hobby of pen collecting. Ruth Lawrence pays a visit to see the collection for herself If you need to jot down a list or write a note chances are you’ll grab a throwaway plastic biro, something cheap, convenient and readily available. Joy Madgwick is a lady who never has to hunt for something to write with; she has a collection of over a hundred pens and she shared some of their fascinating histories with me. Joy’s collection began with the discovery of a pen in a bureau when her aunt passed away in 1990; it probably
belonged to her uncle and was a Canadian Parker Victory Mark II from the mid 1940s. She had the pen repaired by an enthusiast and dealer in Essex who later sold his entire collection at an eagerly awaited auction in London. Although Joy didn’t purchase any at the sale, she’d

caught the collecting bug and her job working in a local pen department fed her passion for stylish writing instruments of every description. One of her rarest pens is a 1955 Conway Stewart no.22 floral, in which flowers were printed onto a type of parchment, which was laminated onto the casing. Only 200 were made which now means these pens are highly collectable. Another pen by the same maker from the late 1940s features a cracked ice design and demonstrates how manufacturers had to constantly come up with new variations to feed an ever growing market. Prices for a top quality pen could be enormously expensive; the equivalent of many hundreds of pounds in today’s money. Pens were promoted as luxurious gift items and advertising accentuated the unique qualities of every new design. Churchill used a Conway Stewart pen throughout the war years and the Queen was presented with two in gold to commemorate her Golden wedding anniversary. Pen nibs always used to be made from gold but now are usually steel or gold plate and a company called Eversharp used to make adjustable nibs which could be slid up or down to increase the width of the nib edge. Eversharp’s best selling pen, the Skyline was designed by Henry Dreyfus, a famous industrial designer and would not leak even at high altitudes as it incorporated a breather tube. Although fountain pens have been around since the 1880s, prior to this, nibs were simply dipped in ink; there is record of Samuel Pepys reservoir ink pen in 1663. Joy’s enthusiasm for her collection has evolved into a series of talks she presents for WI, Rotary and Probus groups and she belongs to the Writing Equipment Society (www. wesonline.org.uk) that produces a members’ journal and host a large show on the first Sunday in October in London. There’s something inherently satisfying about writing with a well designed ink pen; Joy’s collection certainly reignites the style that words can conjure when so beautifully written. Christmas Charity Raffle We have in our Christmas display an amazing rocking horse that is worth £1000 and we have decided to raffle it to raise money for the Rocking Horse Charity based in Brighton. I am sure you are aware that they raise money for additional resources to treat sick children and babies. The tickets will be on sale from November 1st and the draw will take place on 18th December this will mean that the lucky winner will have the rocking horse in time for Christmas. There is also a second prize of a £50 hamper from our award winning farm shop. Tickets are just £1 each from Rushfields Plant Centre in Poynings and every penny will go to the charity.

Ditchling Film Society Our Christmas film on Thursday 7 December 2017, is entitled Hidden Figures which is based on the unbelievably true-life stories of three brilliant AfricanAmerican female mathematicians at NASA. They served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history - the launch of astronaut, John Glenn, into orbit whilst also guaranteeing his safe return! Perhaps the fact that they are African American women explains the reason why this amazing story has remained untold until now. This stunning achievement restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanised the world. The genius of the film lies not in the originality of the script but in the novelty of the story and the liveliness of the performances. Director: Theodore Melfi, England, 2016, 127 mins, PG Cert. We shall be serving our traditional offering of mince pies together with mulled wine in readiness for the festive season. The film will be shown in Ditchling Village Hall. Doors open at 7.30 pm, the film starts at 8.00 pm. Free coffee and biscuits beforehand and wine can be purchased by the glass. There is ample free parking behind the hall. Good Neighbours Plumpton and East Chiltington Good Neighbours are a local group of volunteers willing to help anyone in need in our community. Burgess Hill Shed – Helping the Community The Men’s Shed movement encourages retired men to come together, share interests and pursue craft activities. Burgess Hill Shed was one of the first to open in Mid Sussex, and has just completed its first year and now has over 50 members. Oldland Mill would like to thank you all for your support throughout 2017. Whether you are a volunteer or a visitor it gives us all such encouragement to see that you appreciate our efforts to maintain and run this iconic feature of our village. We had over 1,400 visitors to the mill, spread over our public Open Days. Several organised group visits also took place including Guide and Scout groups. We are thrilled that children are taking an interest in their local history and indeed we have also seen an increase in attendance from the younger generation at our Open Days, with the Animal School proving very popular. Looking to 2018, we are planning to remove two sweeps to meet our seven-year refurbishment cycle. We will be calling for volunteer painters to assist us when these sweeps are on the ground - probably during May and June; you’d be amazed how much bigger they seem when they are brought down to ground level. We always welcome new volunteers so if you are interested in getting more involved please visit our website; www. oldlandwindmill.co.uk. Mustard Seed Café St Edwards Church, Burgess Hill
St Edwards, on the corner of West Street and Royal George Road in Burgess Hill opened the Mustard Seed Community Café run by volunteers in order to provide a place to meet and enjoy very reasonably priced home cooking in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The café is run by volunteers and is currently open three days a week. As the café gets established, we hope to increase our opening hours and host a range of dropin events for various organisations and local service providers. The menu includes full English breakfast (served from 10am-12noon) bagels, paninis, toasties and jacket potatoes. Cakes and pastries are also available. A range of Seedling’s Lunches (for children of course!) are just £2. The Café is open every week on Thursdays - Fridays 10.00 am – 4.00 pm and Saturdays 10.00 am – 2.00 pm. The Café is always looking for volunteers but if volunteering isn’t for you please do come in and enjoy a true community café where all profits are channelled back to help the church ‘s work in the community. Over £1200 has been donated to local charities and good causes in the last few months. Don’t you love waking up the day after Christmas, realising that there’s another day of festivities ahead? Boxing Day is celebrated as a national holiday on the 26 December in the UK and Ireland, while its naming dates back to the Victorian era. On this day, staff working in the houses of the wealthy would be given time off to visit their family as they would’ve spent Christmas Day serving dinner and looking after their employers’ needs, and they would be given a box of gifts and leftover food to take with them as a special present. For the wealthy family, activities on this day would include horse racing and fox hunting. Boxing Day is also known as the feast of Saint Stephen, the patron saint of horses, so sports involving horses were abundant. Nowadays, Boxing Day has developed into a day to spend some quality time with family and is often a day where people continue their Christmas celebrations by venturing out for a walk in the crisp air or to enjoy some form of entertainment. Think of a drink in your favourite local pub by the fire or watching a play or pantomime. If you’re feeling brave enough, you could always join in the tradition of swimming in the icy cold English Channel, participate in a fun run or a charity event. Alternatively, just relaxing in front of the TV for a family film and a glass of wine is more than acceptable – I know which one I’d choose!

Advent calendars are as much a part of Christmas as crackers and stockings, but it hasn’t always been this way. In fact they are a relatively new seasonal tradition, with the very first one reputed to have been produced in Bavaria, Southern Germany in 1908. This is the Advent calendar as we now know it; a way to count down the days until Christmas in paper form. Their gorgeous, mysterious little doors beckoning us to peel them back to reveal illustrations (sometimes biblical) and small toys or chocolate. A delight for children and adults alike! One of the precursors to the Advent calendar originated in 1700s Scandinavia in the Lutheran Church, where the tradition is to mark the first 24 days of December with candles ( Julkalendar) or cross the days off on a chalkboard. According to records, the Advent wreath came next, something we still see across Europe today. The idea of the Advent calendar spread from Scandinavia and Germany to the rest of Europe and the USA in the post war period, becoming hugely popular in families as a

way of marking the beginning of the festive season and helping children countdown to Christmas Day. In the UK, the first Advent calendars containing chocolate was produced in 1958. The Halls! Christmas decorations aren’t just about tinsel and glitter – their religious and cultural significance goes back thousands of years When you’re battling the supermarket crowds as you select your Christmas tree and holly wreath, spare a kind thought for your ancient ancestors. They had to venture into the dangerous wild wood in order to fetch their Yule greenery. The custom of decorating ye olde hearth and home goes back thousands of years. Ancient Romans celebrated the festival of Saturnalia in December with feasting and presentgiving as they adorned their houses and temples with evergreen garlands. Sounds familiar? As early Christian civilisation advanced across Europe it’s easy to see how the old beliefs and Christian themes became intertwined. Ancient cultures in the northern hemisphere recognised the importance of the winter solstice. Offerings were made in the hope that daylight would return. Germanic countries held a 12 day festival called ‘Yul’ - the origin of our Twelve Days of Christmas, perhaps? Nordic regions celebrated ‘Yohl’ and St Bede, writing in 8th century Northumbria, mentions ‘Yule Tide’.
Cosseted by electric light and central heating, we can take a casual attitude to the approach of winter, but it’s easy to understand how our ancestors were perturbed by the changing landscape and why they showed reverence towards plants that miraculously remained alive throughout winter. Over

The Present Conundrum Is the tension and torment of purchasing presents an annual purgatory to be endured with the thinnest of smiles? Or are you organised and planning for Christmas 2018? Are you the type of person who has thought of, purchased, wrapped and gift-tagged all the Christmas gifts you’ll be giving this year while the trees were still green, Cliff was recording his festive single and your neighbours were maxingout their barbecue under Indian summer skies? If you are, then congratulations for you are quite clearly a ‘Jolly Holly.’ You should read no further, unless you enjoy witnessing the purgatory that the rest of us fearfully trudge through with leaden feet on an annual basis. The rest of us, that’s you and I dear reader, we are the silent majority. We are those who know the task of finding Christmas gifts for our nearest, our dearest, our extended family and favoured friends to be something of a soul shattering process, almost emotional persecution. Just what to get for him, for her, for them, for those, for the others, and how much to tip the paperboy are fretful questions. Increasing tension and torment that seem to lead, as Christmas gets closer, down an ever-narrowing, mostly harrowing pathway, to a last
minute dash on Christmas Eve. Will my recipient like what I purchase? Will they pretend to like it if they don’t? Will it be useful? Will it

Gift me a meal in a pub or restaurant for Christmas and I am smiling like the Cheshire Cat by a warm winter fire. It’s a wonderful gift if you’ve never thought of giving it. I finally saw the light last year; it may have been a bright star moving east on a cloudless night. It was shining down on the street, illuminating a copy of our magazine, lying open on the ground, resting on some straw, outside a shop. There it was, open at ‘The Christmas Gift Guide’ and my problems were solved… well most of them were. Not quite ‘Jolly Holly’ I admit, but an improvement on previous times. Knowing all I need to do this year is study the contents page, there’s even a whiff of inner peace in the air. And with that, with the clock running down, I better do a little shopping myself or my nearest and dearest will become a little less close and a little more expensive to please in future!

merriment Christmas Dinner has always been a meal synonymous with luxury and indulgence. While this is no surprise, what might surprise you is that what we consider a traditional Christmas dinner is not so traditional after all Today, the classic celebratory dinner might start with smoked salmon, followed by turkey and Christmas pudding, yet this is a world away from what was eaten during Medieval times. In fact, turkeys only arrived in Europe from the Americas during the late 15th century and certainly wouldn’t have been on anyone’s Christmas menu. So, just what was served up during the season of goodwill? The first thing to appreciate is that during Medieval times the Christmas period was preceded by a month of fasting throughout the season of Advent. The four weeks before Christmas Day was a time to prepare for God’s coming into the world through Jesus and this involved both repentance and fasting. Once the big day

itself arrived, people were free to indulge with a hearty meal. Yet the Medieval version of fasting was somewhat different to our own. In strict terms it meant giving up meat and dairy products, but the rich, reluctant to abandon their mid-winter feasting, found ways around this. While they could still eat fish and seafood, such as oysters and
eels, they also allowed beaver tail, justified because beavers lived in water like fish. Similarly, the mythical Barnacle Goose was a product of the ocean and so goose was not restricted either (the myth claimed the geese dropped into the ocean from tree barnacles). An anonymous 14th century poem describes a Knight’s Advent meal as including, “several soups or stews, two helpings of each… various sorts of fish: baked in bread; grilled; boiled; stewed and continued on page 30

spiced; and all with sauce.” And that was considered fasting! In terms of the agricultural cycle, Christmas was the perfect time to hold a feast as the crops had been harvested and if animals were not to be kept during the winter months, it was a good time for slaughter. This meant there was usually a rich bounty of food available for the big day itself. However, what was eaten largely depended on your level of wealth. For royalty and the very wealthy, the boar’s head would take pride of place during the feast and was usually brought into the great hall with huge ceremony, to the sound of trumpets playing, or the singing of a special carol. Other popular meats included venison, beef, mutton, partridge, goose and with the king’s permission, swan. In 1213, King John held a Christmas feast that included 200 head of pork, 1,000 hens, 100lbs of almonds and 10,000 salt eels. With similar extravagance, Richard II served up 28 oxen and 300 sheep in 1377. Gallons of wine, often mulled

with honey and spices, was consumed and there were many sweet offerings, including fruit pies, tarts, custards, sugarplums, figs, dried fruits and sweet egg puddings. Although our foodstuffs are largely different, both Medieval and contemporary tables would still have groaned under the weight of the rich and extravagant fare on offer.
Our custom of hiding a coin in the Christmas pudding may come from the Medieval game of the Bean King
men. However, unlike today, these pies were originally made with shredded meat, spices and fruit. It wasn’t until the Victorian era that the meat was removed. Gingerbread, also still enjoyed today, was another popular delicacy and was made using expensive and exotic spices. Christmas puddings consisted of a spicy porridge known as ‘frumenty,’ filled with currents and dried fruit. The addition of egg yolks, cinnamon and nutmeg made this a real treat. Our custom of hiding a coin in the Christmas
One tradition that has endured is the eating of mince pies. In Medieval times, these were baked in small rectangular cases to represent the baby Jesus’ crib. The addition of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg symbolised the gifts given by the Three Wise

pudding may come from the Medieval game of the Bean King. This involved a loaf of bread or cake, which had been baked with a small bean inside it. Whoever got the portion with the bean, was proclaimed the Bean King and got to rule over the festivities. Thankfully, Christmas was also a time for sharing and often the local lord would supply his tenants and servants with special food for the celebrations. In 1547, a wealthy gentleman from the Midlands gave his tenants beef, mutton, 10 geese, 9 pigs, 6 capon, a swan, 16 rabbits, 3 hens, 2 woodcocks and 16 venison pies, not to mention all the beer they could drink. In the spirit of Christmas, the local lord might also donate the unwanted offal from his festive deer. This was known as the ‘umbles.’ To make it go further it was often mixed with other ingredients to make a pie, meaning the poor would eat ‘umble pie’. This is the source of the saying we still use today, to refer to someone who has fallen from grace.
For the poor with less generous benefactors, sausages, bacon, bread, cheese and salted fish would have been served up, accompanied by stored apples, peas, beans, onions, leeks, garlic and maybe some honey. For those that could afford it, the Church sold ready cooked geese

Christmas Gammon Ingredients:
2kg unsmoked boneless gammon joint 5 tbsp black treacle 1 tsp whole black mustard seeds 2tsp allspice berries Pinch of whole mace 2 fresh bay leaves 1 tsp black peppercorns Pared zest of 1 orange 500ml bottle of stout Handful of whole cloves 2 tbsp ginger preserve or orange marmalade 2 tbsp demerara
Method
1 Place the gammon, skin side down in a large saucepan. Add 4 tbsp of the treacle and the mustard seeds, allspice, mace, bay leaves, peppercorns and orange zest. Pour over all but 2 tbsp of the stout, and then add enough cold water to cover the meat completely. Bring to a gentle simmer over a medium heat. Skim off any scum from the surface, then cover and simmer gently for 1 ½ hours. Remove from the heat and
leave to stand in the liquid for 30 minutes. 2 Preheat the oven to 200 ºC, gas mark 6. Lift the ham out of the liquid, then carefully cut off the skin, leaving as much fat beneath as possible. Score this in a diamond pattern and stud with cloves at each

Family Fun Oh yes, it is that time of year when your local theatre is in full pantomime mode. Robert Veitch looks into the history of Cinders, Aladdin and Jack and recalls a few childhood memories of his own As Widow Twankey waltzed onto stage and asked the rhetorical, “where’s my career?” Wishee Washee bundled into the foreground, and encouraged the audience into a loud and spontaneous, “it’s behind you!” That line could have come from 2016, 1986 or 1956, because in panto-land, some conventions never change. It’s esoterically British, as quintessential as The Archers, Morris Dancing and watching the Eurovision Song Contest with a bemused smile. Modern pantomime is a musical comedy designed for the whole family to enjoy, but its’ history is a rich and varied tapestry of theatre.
It’s behind you… a potted history
The etymology of pantomime is Greek, meaning ‘panto’ (all) ‘mimos’ (dancer), essentially a dancer performing all the roles. During the Roman era, these Greek tragedies were embellished with myth and legend. This evolved into the Italian Commedia Dell ’Arte that were touring shows with a little comedy added to the performance. From the dawn of the 17th century until the
end of the 19th this form of entertainment became popular in the UK and was known as The Harlequinade. It involved five regular characters and revolved around a comic incident. Originally silent, a little dialogue was gradually introduced. In the early 19th century, fables, folk stories and fairy tales gradually superseded the classical stories. These originated from the silent Mummers Plays that were performed around the UK at Christmastime. Humour, staged fights, gender role reversal and good triumphing over evil became the order of the day. The fairy tale pantomimes used dialogue, song and comedy, gaining ascendancy over the harlequinade to such an extent that by the end of Queen Victoria’s reign the harlequinade
was reduced to an addendum of the main event. The harlequinade’s journey towards extinction was under way and the last known performance was at the Lyceum in 1939. After that, pantomime swiftly transmogrified to become what it is today. Most modern spectacles are based on fables, folklore and fairy tales from the likes of the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen. Others have crept in over the years and sometimes two stories are welded into one. Pantomime is an entity with a flexible format allowing it to be topical, contemporary and relevant as well as historic and traditional. Plot lines are often adapted to suit topical

events of the day, the cast, or the need to get in a good joke at the expense of a neighbouring town or village! Professional pantomime tends to play in larger theatres and utilise a bigger budget to produce a more lavish, indulgent experience with a celebrity of the day taking a leading role. But woe betide the celeb that doesn’t throw their heart and soul
into their performance or is ill equipped as a stage performer. Meanwhile in the commonwealth of amateur panto, it’s routine to see the same actors playing the same or similar characters year after year. Despite the smaller budgets and smaller venues, for many amdram performers it’s the highlight of their year and the only time they’ll play to a packed house.
Pantomime has come a long way and yet some things are pretty much guaranteed to be the same – a girl acting as a boy, pursuing a girl, with a cross dressing man for a mother. Pantomimes are rarely set during Christmastime; it’s usual to see them play out in a neverland of indeterminate space and time. A young woman usually plays the principal boy as a ‘breeches role’ wearing tight fitting garments. This began in Victorian times and served three purposes. Firstly, twentysomething female actors could come across as young boys on stage quite easily. Secondly, in continued on page 38

less permissive, polite Victorian society it was seen as an acceptable way to view a nice pair of ladies legs. Thirdly, tight fitting garments are just so much better for thigh slapping. The principal boy always takes the moral high ground and has a kind heart – after all, good must triumph over evil and there must be a wedding with a heroine for the fi nale. The dame is usually played by an older chap in a dress. She’s often overly made up and generally outrageously dressed, with a ridiculous frock to end them all, kept for the fi nale. The fairy godmother always enters stage right; the villain always enters stage left, harking back to the sides of heaven and hell in those medieval plays. There will be dancing from the chorus from time to time. It’s all that remains from the harlequinade. There will be an animal played by two thespians that might prefer to be performing Hamlet at the RSC. Spare a

thought for the rear end, as that poor actor must surely need to visit an osteopath by the end of the run. The dame and the comic will at some point end up sitting on a bench, singing a song to cheer themselves up, while the villain of the piece creeps on stage behind them. There is comedy, be it slapstick, buffoonery, subtle
I had never heard such a noise, never witnessed such unadulterated excitement and laughter innuendo, puns, topical gags and jokes at the expense of the audience. Some of it will be deliberately awful, while some of it will be subtle and close to genius. Occasional doubleentendre will fly over the heads
of the children as innocently as the fairy godmother, only to land with a wink and a nod on the funny bones of the adults. A handful of children are invited on stage to be interviewed by the comic towards the end of the show. A seat of the pants moment for the comic that tends to reveal his speed of thought to be far faster than the fool he has been playing. And of course…audience participation is key; the audience has to partake to make the magic work, to make good triumph over evil. Pantomime memories
My hazy memory recalls seeing a first pantomime as the dog days of the 1970’s reached their denouement. Anthea Askey was starring as Peter Pan in Worthing. Alas, I remember nothing but the sprightly Anthea performing heroically as the boy that never grew up. A Christmas or two later, my Aunt took me to see Basil Brush in Eastbourne. I fail to remember the name of the panto or role
played by the faux fox. All I have is a faint recollection of queuing afterwards with my Aunt to get deskbound Basil’s autograph. I don’t remember how he signed his moniker. I witnessed the true magic of pantomime in the amateur productions I saw at the onset of my teenage years. Our grandparents took the family to the (now demolished and much missed) Victoria Hall in Southborough to see a troupe with the motto ‘Children first and

If you’ve read this far you’ve probably witnessed that same blissful experience somewhere else, some other time. Like me, you’re keen to do it all again… all that’s left to do is to find a pantomime and get booked up. Otherwise it will soon be the middle of January, and like the old dames career, panto season will be behind you.

A browse round the shops reveals a refreshing mix of everything you need for day to day living alongside the

Tempting antiques, up to the minute clothes and charity shops for vintage upcycling sit side by side with friendly café’s, excellent local food and restaurants. Over six hundred businesses operate in and around Henfield and it boasts a leisure centre, playing fields, tennis courts and a skate park. Outdoor and indoor sports are catered for with cricket, snooker and bowls being popular activities throughout the year. Residents are never short of something to do; over 120 clubs and groups exist for every conceivable interest including book discussions, art, gardening, line dancing, calligraphy, chess, woodcraft and

A quick glance at the events of the week reveal a talk on the lifecycle of bees, a Christmas Fair, quiz night and two concerts; clearly the residents of Henfield are a proactive community who love to get together and share experiences. After visiting the Haven some months ago, I was struck by how important a role it plays in the social fabric of the village; it’s somewhere you can guarantee a warm welcome and a place to share conversation and community events. Set within rural surroundings, the village makes a wonderful centre for enjoying the Downs and opportunities for country walks are abundant whatever the season. South of the village lies the 47 acre Woods Mill Nature Reserve, headquarters of the Sussex Wildlife Trust and an environmental education centre. It’s a wonderful place to visit; children love the ponds and twisty paths that open up opportunities to spot wildlife amid tranquil surroundings of ancient woodland and wild flower meadows. Wizard of the Weald
Renowned fossil hunter Gideon Mantell put Sussex on the palaeontological map. Hanna Lindon looks back at his remarkable life When Gideon Mantell first began collecting fossils in the early 19th century, nobody had yet coined the word ‘dinosaur’. There were endless explanations for the huge bone fragments that had been uncovered across the country, but a race of gigantic prehistoric reptiles wasn’t among them. Mantell was set to help change all of that. Born on February 3rd 1790, in a Lewes street then called St Mary’s Lane but later renamed Station Street, he was the fifth child of shoemaker and radical Whig Thomas Mantell. By the age of 13 he was already passionately interested in history and archaeology, collecting ammonite fossils and bringing back pieces of pot and stone from the ruins of Lewes Priory.

With the science of geology still in its infancy, Mantell was obliged to get a proper job. He trained as a surgeon and midwife, returning to Lewes in 1811 to establish a busy country medical practice. Doctoring filled most of his time. According to his biographer, Dennis Dean, he “attended between two and three hundred cases of midwifery every year and was often up for six or seven nights in a row, his only sleep being an occasional nap in his clothes.” When he did manage to snatch a few moments from his medical work, Mantell could be found collecting or documenting fossils. His most celebrated discovery came relatively early on in his career. Legend has it that his wife, Mary Ann Mantell, spotted a gigantic tooth by the roadside while she was accompanying her husband on a medical visit. Mantell was convinced that he had discovered a new type of herbivorous reptile, which he dubbed the Iguanadon. It was only the second dinosaur to be identified and named, and its discovery cemented the doctor’s reputation as one of the era’s foremost scientific minds. Mantell’s contribution to palaeontology didn’t stop there. He discovered seven dinosaurs in total and published twelve books about fossils. The incredible finds he collected from Cuckfield, Tilgate Forest and other Wealden sites earned him the nickname Wizard of the Weald. It may have been Mantell’s arch-rival Richard Owen who actually coined the term dinosaur, but Dean argues,
“no other individual contributed so much to our early knowledge of prehistoric saurians.” Sadly, Mantell’s life took a downturn after he moved his family from Lewes to Brighton. An attempt to open a fossil museum drained his finances, his daughter died, he separated from his wife and was crippled in a carriage accident. He finally died from an opium overdose in 1852 – but nowadays his achievements are celebrated in exhibitions spanning the world, from Cuckfield Museum to New Zealand’s Alexander Turnbull Library. Mantell’s legacy as a palaeontological wizard and allround Sussex legend lives on. www.sussexliving.com

Feast Your Eyes There’s nothing nicer than a floral arrangement to lift the winter gloom and if you supplement shop-bought flowers with foraged material from your garden, it won’t cost the earth either. Be sure to condition your materials before arranging. Remove the bottom third of foliage, cut a few centimetres off the stems, then stand your flowers in deep water overnight to enable them to take up plenty of moisture. In a warm environment, bacteria can quickly build up in the vase water. A teaspoon, (no more!) of bleach added to the water will deter bacteria and prolong the life of your arrangement. For a classic Christmas combination that’s hard to beat, arrange deep red carnations with evergreen foliage. Spray chrysanthemums are back in vogue - and rightly so. They last for ages in a vase and come in warm wintery shades. Mix them with golden foliage to make their colours glow. Long-stemmed white freesias look elegant and smell divine. Add silver fir and white hypericum berries for a cool, sophisticated arrangement. I’m a recent convert to artificial flowers. Gone are the waxy plastic monstrosities of the past artificial blooms are so cleverly made nowadays. I often use a

A simple arrangement of fresh flowers will always bring cheer – and a little bit of fakery can help too damage furnishings. Real amaryllis and hellebore flowers are expensive and often hard to find. Good quality artificial versions aren’t cheap either, but will last for years, assuming the cat doesn’t wage war on your decorations. Speaking of cats - they are seriously allergic to lily pollen. Silk lilies arranged with natural foliage will solve the problem. They look (almost!) as good as the real thing. Also, not everyone enjoys lily’s heady fragrance another reason why faux flowers can sometimes be a good choice. Zero flower arranging skills? Float some pansy flowers, ivy leaves and tealights in a shallow dish of water to make a perfect table centrepiece in less than 5 minutes! If you have a real Christmas tree, its care requirements are much the same as for flowers. Freshly-cut trees have plump needles and springy branches. A tree that appears dry or is shedding large quantities of needles should be avoided however temptingly cheap. Saw 5 - 10 cms off the trunk and stand the tree in a bucket of
cool water for 24 hours before bringing indoors and securing in a container - ideally a purposemade stand that has a reservoir for water. Position the tree away from direct heat, check the water reservoir daily and your tree will survive the festive period - felines permitting.

Lisa de Silva gives us six easy pointers to insulate your abode during the winter months If your energy bills are sky high, installing double-glazing, upgrading your boiler, or insulating your loft will save money and reduce your energy bills in the long run. If you are planning these improvements but are currently unable to budget for them, we’ve gone down the DIY route with six inexpensive ways to keep you warm and cosy during those cold winter months. 1 USE YOUR CURTAINS Ensure you open all curtains and blinds during daylight hours. This will make the most of any free heat from winter sunshine. Then as soon as dusk falls, close them to keep in the heat. Curtains and blinds act as a form of window insulation, so during the winter months ensure they are as thick as possible. If you don’t want to buy new curtains, why not try putting in a temporary thermal lining, using material like cheap fleece or a woollen blanket, to keep the cold out and the warmth in. 2 RADIATE THE HEAT Unfortunately radiators on external walls often end up warming the wall and not the room. A quick and easy

solution to this is to use heat reflective aluminium foil behind the radiator. This helps to reflect the heat back into the room. You can buy insulating foil

Another tip is to ensure that there is nothing blocking the heat from radiating, so if you have a sofa in front of a radiator, move it out of the way during the coldest months. For those with high ceilings, a shelf placed above the radiator can also help to channel the warmth into the room. 3 EXCLUDE THE DRAFTS Sometimes even the smallest draught can produce a big chill; so avoid this by fi lling any gaps and cracks in doors, windows and floorboards. ‘Sausage dog’ draught excluders can be easily made to measure to floorboards, cover any areas with large gaps between the boards with a rug or blanket. It will make a massive difference to keeping your feet warm and toastie. 4 BLOCK THE CHIMNEY If your fi replace is purely decorative ensure that heat is not lost up the chimney by placing a special chimney

balloon into the hole. This is inflated so it shuts out incoming cold air, whilst keeping in the warm air. Another option is to insert a woollen chimney insulator. Just remember that if you do decide to light the fire, to remove any insulation beforehand. 5 HEAT EFFICIENTLY Any unused rooms in the house should be shut off, along with the radiator. It’s also a good idea to check the efficiency of your radiators. If they are only warm at the bottom, they may need bleeding to get rid of any trapped air in the system. This can be done easily with a radiator bleed key, used to open the small valve at the top of the radiator to release the air. It’s also a great idea to insulate hot water pipes by lagging them with foam tubes. Pipe lagging, which can be easily obtained from your local DIY shop, will increase the efficiency of your heating system. The same goes for your hot water tank. A properly lagged tank will keep the water warmer for longer and the Energy Community claim it can save up to £150 a year. The most efficient way to heat your home is to run your heating on

This is more efficient than waiting until you’re freezing and then turning up the thermostat to heat up the house as quickly as possible. It is recommended that insulation is 25cm thick. Rolls of foam or mineral wool insulation are relatively cheap to buy and if your loft is easy to access with no damp issues, insulating the loft can be a DIY job. First lay the insulation between the joists and then add a further layer at right angles to cover the joists and bring the depth of the insulation up to the required standards. But don’t forget to check the loft hatch and insulate any gaps with the same selfadhesive strips used for windows.

Whilst taking a stroll recently, Ruth Lawrence chanced upon a rare yet amazing sight. An osprey diving and plunging into the water hunting for fish before its migration to Africa Walking round Ardingly Reservoir in mid October I saw a large bird circling the water; too pale for a buzzard, too large to mistake for a gull, it drifted closer. Although I’d never seen one before, it wasn’t long before I recognised it as an osprey, an incredibly lucky and rare sight in Sussex. Once made extinct in England as a breeding bird in 1840, it then only visited these shores as a passing migrant. By 1954 it began to naturally recolonise and a pair has nested successfully almost every year at the RSPB’s Loch Garten in Scotland. Early numbers were small, probably because of pesticides in the food chain and the continued efforts of
egg collectors and by 1976 there were only 14 pairs. Fifteen years later, the number had risen to 71 pairs and 2001 saw the first successful nesting of ospreys in England for 160 years. The osprey I saw would have been stocking up on fish before heading out on its migration route to Africa where it will spend winter before flying back to this country in the Spring.
After hitting the water, it rose, wide winged, from the surface, a colossal effort for such a large bird I watched it carry out its spectacular hunting technique, which involved a near vertical fast plunge dive with wings half folded and feet thrown forward at the last moment. Although the catch wasn’t successful, ospreys apparently dive to a maximum depth of a metre, holding the fish head first when they emerge to carry their quarry to a perch. the toes help to hold a struggling fish and the bird is able to close its nostrils to prevent water entering its nose during a dive. Another name for an osprey is ‘fish hawk’ although is not a true hawk and has its own taxonomic genus and family. Osprey has a connection with the Latin word ossifragus meaning bone breaker referring to the immense grip of its talons. They are long lived birds if they survive to maturity; averaging an eight year lifespan although the oldest known wild osprey lived for 32 years. They are largely monogamous and remain faithful to mate and nest site; some nests have been in use for 20 years with new material being added every year until it reaches a depth of almost two metres. I watched the osprey circle and return several times over the course of the morning; it was an unforgettable sight and a potent reminder of the resilience of nature. That the osprey has returned after being almost eradicated by man is a hopeful sign that more enlightened attitudes can reverse the mistakes of the past and allow this spectacular bird to hunt our waters in increasing numbers. www.rspb.co.uk

hasn’t always been easy. The activewear evolution was triggered back in the 19th century, starting with bathing and cycling costumes that needed shorter skirts and bloomers to ensure enough mobility to take part effectively in these sports. One of the first couturiers to specialise in women’s sportswear was British designer John Redfern, who in the 1870s began making specific clothing for women who rode horses, played tennis and enjoyed other sporting activities. After that, it wasn’t until the 1920s that Parisian designers started to produce activewear with a fashionable twist. These garments became wearable for both daywear fashion and sporting activities. From then on activewear became a sort of fashion statement to be made (except the leotard and leggings combination of the 80s, I’m sure you’ll agree), a trend which continues to this day. www.sussexliving.com

RENTAL IN RETIREMENT Is your New Year resolution to live a more exciting life? In the past four years the number of older people moving into rented accommodation has increased by 13%. This could be for many reasons and may be due to homeowners still having a mortgage in retirement and therefore they are without the means to pay off the debt. However, it could be due to older people wishing to offload the cumbersome family home with a desire to seize enjoyment out of everything that life has to offer. Whilst not necessarily shades of Shirley Valentine – however if the cap fits! Disposable income is essential if you wish to pursue expensive hobbies or travel the world, but to sell your property is a major decision as a home is usually your biggest asset, and before you sell you need to take into careful consideration a number of factors.
You could live to be a hundred or more so your money has to last a long time. Whilst you may not be travelling the world by then, you could well be in need of a nursing home and want to have one offering a high level of care and comfort. When moving into rented, the fi rst

The word oyster is defi ned in the dictionary as being “something from which advantage, delight or profit may be derived” The world could be your oyster but ensure that you keep a pearl or two for a rainy day!
Before making such a major decision, do ensure that you have money to fall back on should it be needed thing people realise is that they have more disposable income. Without a mortgage and with release of equity the chance of achieving your ‘wish list’ becomes a reality. You could go cruising the world for months, shop ‘til you drop, buy the car of your dreams, give money to your children and grandchildren, the opportunities are endless. With no maintenance outgoings and no garden to weed, you are free of a great deal of worries and have time on your hands. Also, should your family move out of the area, if you are living in rented, it is easier to move and locate nearer your loved ones.

After a reed lined inlet the path enters Sandhole Wood, where it gets a little steeper as the road approaches. Beyond the kissing gate, turn right onto Balcombe Lane and walk uphill. It’s a quiet road, but even so, walkers should be on the right, looking out for oncoming traffic. Around 200m later and a fraction beyond a yew tree on the left, there will be an obscured fi ngerpost on the right. The path heads down a bank so beware of it being slippery underfoot. Follow the path (over the fallen silver birch if it’s still there) through the trees and along to the conjoined sleeper bridges that cross the brook.

Blow away the festive cobwebs and get set for 2018 with a bracing walk based at Ardingly reservoir
The entrance to Ardingly Reservoir is on College Road, ⅓ of a mile south of the entrance to the adjacent school. Entry to the car park is half a mile from the road. From College Road, the access gently arcs around to the right, then after a short section of one way it turns sharp left and heads downhill. At the end, turn right and keep going until the car park appears on the right. The car park lies behind the green expanse of the dam. Be suitably attired for this time of year, with boots being the footwear of choice in preference to trainers. From the far side of the car park walk north-easterly uphill, following the hedge line. The path snakes past three picnic benches on its way. At the top, the vast body of water that is Ardingly Reservoir will appear. Ardingly Reservoir was created in

1978 after the Shell Brook that used to run through this valley was dammed. When full the 17 metre high dam holds back 5 million litres of water. The reservoir covers 198 acres and drains into the River Ouse. There are hides for the birders, an activity centre for water sports enthusiasts, and ‘monsters’ lurking beneath the surface for the anglers. Pass through the kissing gate on the right by the sign for the Kingfisher Trail and follow the path around to the left and through the Fullingmill Wood. Beyond the wood, the path levels out and it’s reasonably solid underfoot, staying parallel to the waters edge along the way. For walkers with flasks there are places to stop and sup. Those blowing out seasonal cobwebs can keep pumping the legs, retain a good tempo and suck in the festive air.
The abundance of pine needles on the other side is an obvious sign that there are no deciduous trees above, for the time being. The next section is the steepest climb of any Sussex Living walk this year. It’s 20-25% but only extends for about 100m, so just hook up the oxygen tanks and get on with it. Towards the top, tree roots criss-cross the path, making it something of an organic staircase. At the top the climb flattens and eases left, out of the pine trees. Beyond a square post on the left, the path turns right and squeezes between the back gardens of Ardingly suburbia. At paths end, turn right on to the tarmac of Church Lane. After 350m the road peters out in a farmyard, with two large barns nearby. A fi ngerpost on the left offers three routes south. Take the middle option that enters a field, in which there are remnants of harvested maize. Odd decaying stalks here and there struggle to stand to attention in the breeze. Look straight ahead across the reservoir, and if the boats of the activity centre are visible on the far bank,

this is the correct path. Head downhill, with a shimmy left and right here and there, walking between what would have been tall green lines of ripening maize at the end of summer. At the bottom of the field cross the new stile and turn left and head back through Fullingmill Wood. Indulge in a view of most of the reservoir by following the path across the dam towards the activity centre. There’s a café here, that’s usually open at weekends. After a last look at the water, wander downhill back to the car. Driving home, hopefully feeling refreshed, maybe its time to contemplate a New Year’s resolution. Whilst Les Campbell is recuperating from an accident, Robert Veitch has taken on the role of being Les’ legs. We hope that Les will be back out and walking again soon and wish him all the best with his recovery. Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. MND is a progressive neurological disease which currently has no cure. It takes away your ability to use your arms, walk, talk, swallow and, ultimately, to breathe. A third of individuals diagnosed pass away within a year and 50% within two years and while the median age of onset is in the mid 50s, it also affects younger people often with growing families. The West Sussex North branch of the MND Association is always seeking new recruits to help in the fight against the disease – however much (or little) time they are able to offer! At the heart of what the branch does for local families hit by this devastating condition is its Association Visitors. Full training is offered for these highly rewarding roles for individuals wishing to help families at a very difficult time in their lives. Chris Sheridan is Vice Chair of the branch as well as an Association Visitor. “It is a vital, challenging and rewarding role, providing volunteers with benefits such as self-development and the opportunity to make a difference in peoples’ lives,” she said. “I meet some amazing people and never cease to be in awe of their determination. It is inspirational and puts life into perspective.” Another current requirement is for a

SUPPORT The West Sussex North branch of the MND Association is run by a small team of enthusiastic volunteers who aim to support the care of local people living with Motor Neurone Disease and to raise funds to support research
volunteer to keep the branch’s WordPress website updated which might take up to a couple of hours per month. Very importantly, however, the branch is also keen to build a roster of people to call on just once or twice in the year. For example, to help out with teas at the branch socials and fundraising events, with a collection at a local supermarket or undertaking a challenge such as a
run or cycle ride. Local companies are also invited to support the branch. Perhaps by sponsoring a branch event or organising activities for the office, such as a dress down day, a quiz night or a cake bake. Did you know the ma n that made a nation laugh across the generations wrote ma ny of the Ca rr y On fi lms at his Sussex home? Neither did we!
Kenneth Williams need only mutter the words “Oooh Matron” and it’s easy to recall Hattie Jacques, a picture of lusty desire, looking adoringly across the hospital ward towards her beau that will never be. Talbot Rothwell, once a resident of Fulking and Worthing, scripted that scene and countless others across twenty consecutive Carry On fi lms. Talbot was born on 12th November 1916 in Bromley and spent his early working life as a town clerk in Brighton and then as a Police Officer before becoming an RAF pilot. During WWII he was shot down over Norway, sometime after 1942 and kept prisoner at the infamous Stalag Luft III, close to the current German – Polish border. Stalag Luft III was the location of The Great Escape and it was here he first met Carry On stalwart Peter Butterworth. Along with others, they began to entertain the allied prisoners. Tolly as he liked to be called, recounted on Peter Butterworth’s This Is Your Life in 1975, “I think we had one production about every 7-10 days and each ran for 4-5 days… let’s face it we had a captive audience.” The noise from the entertainment helped mask the sounds underground in tunnels Tom, Dick and Harry. Ironically Peter Butterworth later auditioned for The Great Escape but was rejected because he didn’t look heroic or athletic enough. Post-war, Talbot became a full time

scriptwriter, penning lines for the Crazy Gang, Arthur Askey, Terry Thomas and Ted Ray. In 1963 the door was left ajar at the Rank Organisation after Norman Hurdis, the writer of the first six Carry On fi lms departed for America. Talbot’s first effort was Carry on Cabby and he would write screenplays for a further nineteen fi lms until his retirement. His style differed from Hurdis, being bawdy seaside humour
Let’s face it we had a captive audience with double entendres and puns. Talbot called it music hall humour in the style of Max Miller. But there was an undercurrent of morality to it. There was no swearing, and nobody succeeded in getting anybody else into bed. Often the men were portrayed as idiots and the women enjoyed being on top. Talbot wrote many of the fi lms at his Fulking home, nestled at the foot of the South Downs beneath Devil’s Dyke. Legend has it he would visit the local pub and buy anyone a pint for telling an original joke that made him laugh.
It cost him several drinks, but provided plenty of material. From time to time cast members from the fi lms would come and visit. Somewhere along the line, we’ve all laughed at a Carry On and the canon contains classics of British cinema in Carry On Cleo, Carry On Doctor and Carry On Up The Khyber – all of which were penned by Talbot Rothwell. The fi lms reached a creative peak at the end of the 1960s. Since then, the fi lms have reached new generations of viewers thanks to constant repeats on television. In 2007 Talbot’s, “infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me” performed by Kenneth Williams was voted the greatest one-liner in cinematic history for a movie poll. It beat off some serious competition including, “he’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy” and “don’t call me Shirley,” as well as “Bond, James Bond.” But thereby hangs another tale. The infamy line was actually written by Frank Muir and Dennis Norden for their radio show Take It From Here. Talbot borrowed it with their permission. As a wide-eyed ten year old, watching Carry on Cleo on TV, the infamy line washed over me. But then my young eyes were fully focused on the very alluring, endlessly captivating, Amanda Barrie! Talbot Rothwell retired after Carry On Dick in 1974. He moved over the South Downs to Worthing, living quietly on the coast with gradually deteriorating health. After his retirement, the quality of the later Carry On fi lms went downhill. Society became more permissive, as did the fi lms, losing their raison d’etre. The final reel on a career that fi lled a nation with laughter came to an end in February 1981. Talbot’s work lives on in the fi lms. Carry on Laughing? Just turn on the TV, there may be one on now.

ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND MUSICAL For over forty years Mid Downs Radio has been wishing people well, and now it’s easy to listen in thanks to our bright new website ‘Variety is our strength’ is one of our catchphrases and it applies as much to our presenters who range from 18 to 80, as it does to the range of entertainment we broadcast. Take Luis Santos, for example, or Luis F, his DJ name. Luis was brought up in a small village near Oporto in Portugal where he played drums and keyboard in his cousin’s band. At the age of 14 he travelled alone to England to join his parents. He didn’t speak a word of English but in typical Luis fashion soon set about learning it so he could help his parents. Working in the Princess Royal Hospital one day he saw the door to our studio open and went in to find out what was going on. A few months later under the mentorship of Poppa Roy Randall, he passed his presenter training and launched his own show ‘In the Mix Sessions’, a blend of all kinds of music.
