SPORT
As Ben Stiles seeks to make his mark in the fiercely competitive world of motor sport, he found the time to pull into the pits to talk to Peter d’Aguilar about racing and his hometown of Bexhill-on-Sea
At Levels Raceway (Timaru, near Christhcurch in New Zealand)
BEN STILES
FROM BEXHILL TO BRANDS HATCH
B
en Stiles has three factors working in his favour. First of all, his father Trevor is himself a former Formula Ford champion. Secondly, Ben hails from Bexhill-on-Sea – the fabled birthplace of British motor racing. And thirdly, the fact that he is an outstanding driver also helps. Twenty-four-year-old Ben has already made an impact on the winner’s podium by clinching victory in the 2019 Universal Racing Series Classic Formula Ford 2000 National Championship, winning eight out of eleven starts at iconic venues such as Donington Park, Silverstone and Brands Hatch and recording the fastest laps at five of the six circuits he competed at.
“I’ve always dreamt of winning a motor racing championship but, until recently, the cost involved has always been an obstacle,” says Ben. “To
win in my first season, after only two years racing, is a dream come true.” As well as winning championships, Trevor also managed his own Formula Ford team. Having taken a twenty-year break from the sport, he is now heavily involved in his son’s burgeoning career. “It all started when dad went out to New Zealand on holiday and found himself near a racetrack, and they offered him a drive,” Ben explains. “I was just finishing my degree in Motorsport Engineering at Bath University. Dad suggested I joined him out there and then I got the chance to drive in the New Zealand National Formula Ford Championship.” Ben and Trevor now divide their time between New Zealand and England, working together on Ben’s racing car – a real father and son team. Ben’s success in the UK championship has given them both great satisfaction. “It wasn’t easy,” he noted, “due to a lack of finance, we often had to use second hand tyres.” Ben won his first race, in Anglesey, and he followed it up by passing the chequered flag first in seven of his next ten races. This year he is hoping to graduate to the European Championship in his Van Diemen RF82, or take a step up to Classic Formula Three, for which he’ll need finance for a specialist car. “Ultimately I’d love to get into historic Formula One, but at 24, I may already be too old to be scouted,” says a wistful Ben. Great drivers from the seventies, eighties and nineties – James Hunt, Niki Lauda and Ayrton Senna (who also started out in Formula Ford driving a Van Diemen) are where Ben draws his inspiration. “Racing in those days was tough and risky. The drivers showed great commitment and courage. The cars we drive in classic Formula Ford are from that era. While the circuits nowadays have better safety features, our cars are just as dangerous.” What makes a good racing driver? Ben believes it’s an instinctive ability, because everything happens too fast for conscious thought. To be successful, both car and driver need to be in perfect working order, and in perfect harmony. The fact that their car is highly competitive – despite their limited financial resources is due to Ben’s

engineering studies combined with his father’s experience and know-how. Another aspect of Ben’s busy life is his support for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice in Eastbourne where his mother is a patron. To help hospice fundraising Ben donated a day out at Brands Hatch for a party of six – including a visit to the pits, lunch and watching the race. It raised £3,600 at auction. “I also took my racing car to the successful bidders summer party. Both the children and their parents were mad keen to sit in it.” Ben is proud of being born and bred in Bexhill-on-Sea, and he’s a passionate flag bearer for the town’s historic motor racing tradition. Bexhill-on-Sea Mayor Kathy Harmer, whom Ben met recently, commented, “I would like to congratulate Ben on his outstanding achievement. We are so proud of him as a local lad from our wonderful town – the home of British Motor Racing. I know Ben is keen to help promote Bexhill-on-Sea as a jewel in the South East. I’m look forward to working with him. Go Ben!” “Motor racing has a wonderful family atmosphere,” enthuses Ben. “There’s no buzz quite like driving a high-performance car. Winning trophies is the icing on the cake.”
Adrian Langridge (Classic F3 Champion) with Ben at the Historic Sports Car Club Awards
Ben believes a racing driver needs instinctive ability, because everything happens too fast for conscious thought BEXHILL – AT THE DAWN OF BRITISH MOTOR RACING Ben’s hometown of Bexhill-on-Sea played a part in the early history of British motor racing. At the turn of the 20th century the 8th Earl De La Warr, Major Gilbert Sackville, had ambitions to turn the town into a resort to rival Monte Carlo. An eminent and
wealthy local landowner, politician and sportsman, De La Warr’s seafront Bicycle Boulevard along the De La Warr Parade between Galley Hill and the family’s Sackville Hotel was converted into a one kilometre motor racing strip. With support from the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland, De La Warr set up the Great Whitsuntide Motor Races of 1902, over four days. Being on private land, the 12mph national speed limit didn’t apply. Cars raced side by side like drag racers and were timed over the length of the course. French driver Leon Serpollet was the World Land Speed Record Holder of the time (75mph), set in his steam powered car, Easter Egg. Serpollet won the event, reaching an average speed over the kilometre of 54mph. He defeated more than 200 other competitors and claimed the British Land Speed Record in the process. The event attracted a crowd of curious spectators, several thousand in number, most of whom had never seen cars travelling at such fantastic speeds. Plans to build a permanent motor racing circuit were scuppered by a property owner on De La Warr

(competition of elegance car show) on De La Warr Parade. In 1936 the concours was held in the newly opened De La Warr Pavilion. Jubilee Speed Trials took place in 1954, celebrating Bexhill’s motoring heritage, and focusing on historic rather than contemporary vehicles for the first time. The Bexhill 100 Festival of Motoring ran along the seafront from 1990 – 2002, celebrating the town’s motor racing history. The final festival commemorated the centenary of the original races. In 1999 the Bexhill 100 Motoring
Club was launched and each year it organises The Bexhill 100 Motoring Club Classic Car Show on the August Bank Holiday Monday at the town’s Polegrove Recreation Ground. The Technology Collection at Bexhill Museum celebrates the town’s role in British motor racing with three vehicles representing different stages in its evolution; a reproduction of Serpollet’s Easter Egg, a 1958 Mk III Elva racing car and the 1993 world record breaking Volta electric car. Coincidentally… the museum carried out the restoration work on the Elva in a barn on Ben and Trevor’s farm. l

Parade, who took out an injunction banning motor car racing. Brooklands, the first purpose built motor racing circuit opened in 1907, and in America the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (1909) was the second. But it wasn’t the end of Bexhill’s connection with cars. In 1922 and 1923 speed trials were held on West Parade. 1934 and 1935 witnessed a Concours d’Elegance

EDUCATION
An outdoor education
Teaching kids outside can boost everything from their grades to their wellbeing. Here’s how to embrace outdoors learning, says Hanna Prince
I
t’s official: our kids need to get out more. Research shows that modern children spend half the time playing outside in comparison to their parents. Scarily, 75% of UK kids get out less than prisoners. The good news is that the outdoor education movement is booming. From schools and nurseries to afterschool clubs, an increasing number of organisations now recognise the benefits of nature-inspired learning. Getting out of the classroom can have a transformative effect on young lives, boosting confidence, increasing selfesteem and even improving grades. So how can your kids get involved? Forest School nurseries You’re never too young to begin learning outdoors. That’s the philosophy of the nurseries embracing a more natural approach to
childcare. Some take it to the extreme – such as the Dorset ‘woodland nursery’ with no running water or electricity where toddlers cook over open fires and saw wood – but plenty of local nursery schools treat tots to outdoor time. There is currently no official forest school certification, so ask nurseries how much time
Scarily, 75% of UK kids get out less than prisoners kids spend outdoors, what activities they take part in and whether they are encouraged to take risks within the context of a safe, supervised environment. Beyond the classroom The forest school label doesn’t just apply to nurseries. Schools often
have outdoor education programmes, which offer pupils the chance to get to grips with maths, science and other subjects in a natural environment. You can encourage your kids’ school to get involved by making them aware of outdoor learning projects, such as Outdoor Classroom Day (www. outdoorclassroomday.org. uk) or Learning through Landscapes (www.ltl.org.uk). Holiday clubs Concerned your kids are spending too much time in the classroom? A holiday club could provide some much-needed vitamin D top up. National charity Forest School Camps runs camping-themed trips for school age kids, but there are local holiday clubs offering children the chance to get their hands and boots dirty too. Some schools across the area even host after school clubs with an outdoors theme.
Nature sessions Look out for events that promote learning outdoors. A number of local charities host free or low-cost sessions for kids, including the Sussex Wildlife Trust, the National Trust, the Lewes Railway Land Wildlife Trust and the Ashdown Forest Foundation. Many events take place during holidays, but there are woodland toddler groups on offer around the area all year round. Outdoor movements Some organisations were promoting outdoor education for kids long before ‘forest school’ became a buzz term. Girl Guides, the Scout Association and the Woodcraft Folk have all given generations of kids a passion for the nature. If you’re keen to wean your kids from their screens, it could be time to sign them up. l

efore their first daughter Alice was born, Bridget and Michael Rendall decided to move from West Hampstead to Kent mainly to be nearer to Bridget’s twin sister and her family. “Tunbridge Wells has always appealed to us as a town,” says Bridget. “It has kept its own distinctive individual character unspoilt by large supermarkets or chain stores. Also working in the city of London, it is an easy commute for us.” When their second daughter Olivia was born, they grew out of their Victorian semi overlooking the common outside Tunbridge Wells, and looked for a bigger house in a much sort after village nearer to the girls’ schools. Finding a converted oast house on the market was our idea of a dream,” Bridget smiles listing additional plusses; “the building was not listed and has interesting features like the round rooms and the cowell which turns in the wind. We believe it was converted in the 1960s by an upmarket developer who invested it
“You can overdo any style; having a good mix makes a house feel like a home rather than a showroom,” says Bridget

So we inherited lovely floor tiles, a super-efficient wood burning stove and a square staircase and large square hall.” The couple began by taking down the wall between the narrow galley kitchen and a rather cramped elongated breakfast room. “This has given us one big open plan space where we all gather. We had a window seat built in which improved the room’s long thin proportions and created a focal point.” The only furniture brought with them from their previous home was a wedding present, a rectangular cherry wood dining room table and chairs. The rest of what they owned, Bridget insists, was on its last legs. “When the girls were

Furnishing the round rooms was a novelty and a challenge because unlike square rooms they lack an obvious feature wall, as Bridget discovered. “You have to create your own focal point,” she explains. “For instance the sideboard became the pivotal statement piece in the dining room,

painted or wallpapered, which gives you more design options. Geometric tiles are still very in and create a timeless, classic elegance – unfussy but edgy at the same time. Tiles come in pretty much every colour you could think of now, from a classic white to a bold and striking black and everything in between. Metro tiles are a great all-rounder shape and you can switch up their style by experimenting with different layouts; try a herringbone, vertical, or basket weave style. Marble tiles or marbleised wallpaper is on trend for 2020 and looks very impressive when it is book-matched and will add a high-end feel to any bathroom. When it comes to flooring most of the above applies; tiles look fabulous, are easy to look after and the design choices are endless, just make sure you go for specific floor tiles which are more durable and grippy. Slate or other natural stone looks wonderful but can be a bit pricy, a more cost effective option is vinyl or laminate which come in a huge array of designs. If you are looking to go more sustainable then try bamboo or cork. Underfloor heating is a good idea to take the chill out of cold floors, and of course a fluffy bathmat is a cosy place to stand out of the shower or bath. FIXTURES AND FITTINGS To keep your bathroom looking up to date you can simply switch around fixtures and fittings instead of going for a complete overhaul. Brass coloured plumbing fixtures are having a moment in the limelight, as are matt black ones, and both look really stunning against either light or dark colour schemes. Lush plants look great in the bathroom and inject an instant natural vibe. In fact botanical wallpaper is right on trend at the moment and could be added in just a small amount to make a big statement. Even a simple set of coloured towels can inject a fresh look to any bathroom, a small change can make a big difference. l

BLOOMING TIMES
Sowing
SUCCESS Garden centres are gearing up for the great seed-sowing season, but there are so many different types of seeds to choose from. What to buy? Flo Whitaker explains
W
ho can resist buying seeds? Not me. Confronted by 100s of seed packets, each one bearing a more beguiling picture than the last, I always come home with far more than I intended. To the novice gardener, unfamiliar phrases and odd symbols on seed packets can seem like an unfathomable Tolkienesque language, but persevere – the small print gives you all the information you need. Pay particular attention to the conditions the plant requires, (sun or shade?). Its height/width potential is also important. Seeds are not an indication of eventual size – big plants can start out as tiny seeds! And what about that mysterious coding; HA, HHA and so on? Here’s a brief guide: An ‘annual’ is a plant that quickly grows to maturity, produces seed, then dies, all within one growing season/ year. Annuals are spilt into two groups. Hardy Annuals, (labelled ‘HA’ on seed packets) are tough characters and are an excellent choice for inexperienced 38 SUSSEX LIVING | February 2020
gardeners. In the natural environment, seed from (say) a poppy, falls into the soil and remains dormant throughout winter as it waits for spring to arrive. However, in a mild autumn, the seed may start to grow. Plants are clever; hardy annual seedlings will gamble a few degrees of frost for the greater reward of having a head start in spring. You can sow hardy annuals directly into the border without having to faff about with seed trays and compost. Reliable old favourites that can be sown
To the novice gardener, unfamiliar phrases and odd symbols on seed packets can seem like an unfathomable Tolkien-esque language this way include calendula, poppies, gypsophila, nigella and Salvia viridis. Half-hardy annuals, (‘HHA’) have the same annual lifespan but demand a little more care. Best sown in seed trays, they require some indoor warmth and can be planted outdoors in May when all danger of frosty weather has passed. The half-hardy brigade includes
beauties such as cosmos, nasturtium, ipomoea and nicotiana. Biennials, (‘B’) take two seasons to develop. Sown outdoors in trays during July-August, wallflowers, sweet William, ammi, lunaria and foxgloves will make strong-rooted plants that can be planted into the borders in October. Come spring, they’ll grow away at a tremendous rate; quickly becoming mature, flowering plants that will set seed from mid-late summer and start the biennial life cycle all over again. Don’t assume that perennial (‘P’) means ‘lives forever’. Technically-speaking, a perennial plant is only required to live longer than a biennial. Lupins and delphiniums are notoriously short-lived perennials and have a tendency to wear themselves out after just a few years. At the other extreme, a tree peony seedling may go on to live for 100 years. Seed sowing is a highly addictive business. You’ll start by growing a humble saucer of cress and before you know it, you’ll be germinating orchids in the airing cupboard. You have been warned! l

jet set, meaning far away places like Paris, Rome, Vienna or Venice became attainable romantic destinations. In my parent’s day, the bride and groom would depart before the end of the wedding reception, driving away with a cluster of tin cans tied to the underside of the rear bumper, bouncing along the road behind. A banana stuffed in the exhaust pipe was an occasional parting gesture from a mischievous best man. It should be remembered, it wasn’t that long ago ‘living in sin’ was a term used in hushed tones behind twitching net curtains. In more recent years the phrase has faded from public consciousness; these days, more couples live together before they marry. And yet the concept of what a honeymoon is and the desire to have one remains strong. It’s still an integral part of the post-wedding period. For my generation, just as stag and hen parties have become elaborate weekends away, the mini-moon has emerged as an entity in itself. It’s a quick weekend break immediately after the wedding, or a day or two later. Essentially, it’s just a short period of rest and relaxation after the modern stress of a modern wedding, before heading back to reality. Sometimes it’s
a precursor to the ‘real honeymoon’ that follows on the first anniversary, the YOLO – the ‘You Only Live Once’ trip of a lifetime… Traditionally the groom booked the honeymoon, and he kept the destination a surprise for his bride – a bit of a ‘don’t forget your toothbrush’ moment. Clearly, a smart groom would
Apocryphal myths would have you believe newlyweds were supplied with a month’s worth of mead have paid attention to the hints his fiancée had been dropping during their engagement. Not all grooms are smart. In these days of equality honeymoons are generally a joint effort. We toyed with the idea of Gibraltar, Dubai, Amsterdam and Rapid City. We toyed with the idea of no honeymoon at all. But in the end we
opted for a place in Nevada called The Meadows. In Spanish, that translates as Las Vegas. We both chose it, but I organised it: a nod to modernity and a nod to tradition. A rare but current trend is the unimoon or solo-moon, where bride and groom take separate trips, because they just can’t agree on where to go. How that bodes for the marriage is anyone’s guess. So where to go and what to do? Do as you please, do what makes you happy, make plans for great memories, it’s your honeymoon and nobody intends to have more than one! l

The Real Bread Campaign’s annual, international celebration of additive-free loaves and people who make them returns for its 11th year, running from 22 February to 1 March, as Chris Young tells us
GET INVOLVED Each year, bakeries, baking schools, mills, schools, care homes, youth and other community groups around the world organise Real Bread events and activities including classes, baketogethers and open days. Everyone is encouraged to bake Real Bread with and for their families, colleagues, neighbours and other friends. Please share a #WeAreRealBread photo of yourself with your loaf on social media. RISING UP A particular focus of this year’s celebrations are the enterprises and projects in the UK and beyond that help people to benefit from the therapeutic, social and employment opportunities of baking, particularly Real Bread. They include campaign supporters Stoneham Bakehouse in Hove, Nutley Hall in Uckfield and Lewes Community Kitchen. FIND LOAF ONLINE Visit the Real Bread Campaign’s website for some of the places to buy additive free loaves, flour from independent mills, equipment, as well as baking school locations, although check with your local bakery and delicatessen too. The website includes the Real Bread Week (and yearround) events calendar; details of The Real Bread Loaf Mark, your at-a-glance assurance; recipes and details of how to support the charity’s work by joining the Real Bread Campaign. www.realbreadcampaign.org 50 SUSSEX LIVING | February 2020
SIMIT
By Chris Young Simit are the definitive Turkish street food, traditionally eaten very fresh with a glass of black tea. Having spent a week travelling by train from London to Istanbul, I witnessed sunrise as we pulled into the station. Within minutes, I was eating my breakfast, fresh from the street cart of one of the city’s 1,400 registered simitçi.
METHOD Mix the dough ingredients together thoroughly. Cover and leave to rest for 10 minutes. Knead until smooth. Place in a large bowl, cover and leave to prove at room temperature for 30 minutes, then transfer to the fridge and leave overnight to continue proving. Mix the pekmez (or alternative) and water together in a bowl and put the sesame seeds on a plate. Press the dough out on a lightly floured work surface, to de-gas (that is, to get rid of the largest bubbles), so the finished product has an even texture. Divide the dough into 8–10 equalsize pieces, rolling each one into a strand about 70–80cm/28–32in long. You might need to do this in two stages with a 5–10-minute rest in between. Hold the two ends of a strand together in one hand, and the middle in your other hand and twist the dough a couple of times to entwine the strands. Pinch the ends of the twisted dough together to make a ring, then roll the join back and forth on a work surface a few times to seal together. Repeat with the remaining strands of dough. Dunk each simit into the diluted pekmez (or alternative), then drain and dip into the sesame seeds to coat fully. Lay them out on two or three baking sheets, cover and leave to prove at room temperature for 30–45 minutes. Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/425°F/gas 7. Bake the simit for 10–15 minutes until reddish brown. Baker’s Tip Pekmez is a molasses-like syrup made by boiling down grape must. It can be bought from Turkish and Mediterranean shops, specialist delicatessens and online. l

PETS
February has got Teddy the Border Terrier leaping about all over the place, alongside his trainer, and translator, Helen Stockton
It’s a Dog’s Life F
ebruary is a strange month. It’s shorter than all the others, then it has some odd notions like Valentine’s day and Shrove Tuesday. What are they all about? This year however, things are a bit different: it’s also a leap year. Now I’m a dog of limited understanding, so to me a leap is a big jump. I’m quite a large Border Terrier and I’m steady when up on my back paws so an upward leap, with sufficient motivation, is quite achievable. Added to that, ‘Her Indoors’, for reasons best known to herself, has been training me to jump over hurdles. When I was first confronted with these obstacles, I did what any self-respecting dog would do and went around them, and even, quite commendably if you view it in the right light, under them, but apparently this wasn’t correct. We’ve been practising and it’s quite amusing to have ‘Her Indoors’ puffing alongside me, yelling encouragement. Now, with sufficient incentivising by much waving of treats, I can also go over them with impressive leaps of my own. I’m not sure ‘Her Indoors’ could keep this up all year though. 52 SUSSEX LIVING | February 2020
However, having done a bit of research, I’ve discovered that this isn’t what a leap year is all about, it’s something to do with the Gregorian calendar and keeping the year synchronised over time. Maths isn’t my strong point, after all, we dogs only have four paws to count with, but all I know is that once every
I’d give favourable consideration to any declarations of intent that may come my way four years, February is longer by a day. ‘Her Indoors’ sister has a birthday on 29th February. The odds of being born on this day are 1 in 1,161 so she’s a rare bird. As well as getting the choice over whether she celebrates on the 28th February or the 1st March in the other three years when her birthday goes missing, she also gets the opportunity for a major celebration every fourth
anniversary. I don’t want to let the dog out of the bag, but this year she’s fourteen. She’ll soon be old enough to take her GCSEs for the second time, lucky her! According to legend, on a leap year, women are empowered to propose should they wish to do so, although why they shouldn’t do that any year is beyond me. I don’t actually have a lady friend, although there is a rather nice female Border Terrier in our village, but I don’t imagine she is about to produce a ring and ask for my paw in matrimony somehow. Still, if there are any attractive lady furs out there, who don’t mind sharing their toys and food with me, I’d give favourable consideration to any declarations of intent that may come my way. I’m house-trained, walk to heel and sleep most of the day, so I’m the ideal long-term companion. I’m not really sure what use it is, as I don’t think they do a Grand National for dogs, but I can also leap over hurdles too. Any offers? l

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

THIS MONTH FLO WHITAKER IS FEEDING THE BIRDS… ALL THE BIRDS, AND WAGING WAR AGAINST DELINQUENT SQUIRRELS. WATCH OUT!
On a chilly morning, as I watched the birds from the kitchen window and wondered if three crumpets for breakfast would be overdoing it, a question popped into my mind: Why aren’t blue tits obese? From dawn to dusk, it’s a constant food-fest out there – they should be as big as turkeys. Many birds visit my garden. Some live here, others ‘commute’; flitting back and forth from the fields nearby. I assume they’re all active on social media, (Twitter, presumably?) and tell their friends about this convenient 24 hour fast food joint. In 2017, a report by the British Trust for Ornithology estimated that the UK market for wild bird food was worth £200 million per year. Totting up my annual bill for 75 kilos of peanuts, 300 fat balls, seeds, mealworms and much else besides, I can easily believe it. Tuppence a bag? Ha! Mary Poppins would be reaching for the smelling salts. By the way, squirrel-proof bird feeders are about as mythical as a certain train company’s timetable. Squirrel-resistant, maybe, but nothing is fully squirrel proof. Just when you’re feeling the warm glow of success that accompanies the shelling out of twenty quid for yet another “guaranteed squirrel-proof” feeder, a delinquent squirrel from the Wrong Side Of Town, armed with a pair of bolt cutters and a bad attitude, manages to break in within 30 seconds. Never mind about the Sussex Puma – there’s a beast out there called the Sussex Squirrel that eats steel weld mesh for breakfast. Now that’s scary…

LOCAL WALK
WESTHAM TO COODEN
WALK
For February, Robert Veitch looked south for inspiration; taking a train to Pevensey and Westham, discovering a wonderful trek through history, across shingle and railway lines to journeys end in Cooden
F
rom Pevensey and Westham Station, walk north along Eastbourne Road to the mini-roundabout. Turn right into High Street and wander past knapped flint walls, zebra crossings and Tudor framed buildings. Amble over herringbone block paving past The Parish Church of St. Mary to the west gate of Pevensey Castle. Once through the gate, a thin stripe of tarmac bisects this impressive historical fortification once occupied by Romans, the Normans and more recently the Home Guard. Follow the path out through the east gate and under the arch, turning right into the car park. At the far end of the car park, once through the wooden gate, veer right and plod through the squelchy surface to the four-way fingerpost. Bear left, then left again between the ditches. Turn right, past the decapitated oak, striking 58 SUSSEX LIVING | February 2020
out across Anderita Park towards the electricity poles in the distant southwest corner. The stile leads to the railway line, which must be crossed with great care, then another stile. Wander across the meadow towards the gap in the hedge and distant spire. There may be sheep along the way. Please treat livestock with due care and respect. Beyond the wooden post continue across the second meadow in the same general direction.
Once occupied by Romans, the Normans and more recently the Home Guard
Turn right at the next finger post, then cross the metal bridge and follow the Langney Sewer for 350m, before crossing over via the wooden bridge. Trek straight on, towards the sound of traffic, arriving at the A259 a few minutes later after passing through a kissing gate. Cross carefully to the service road opposite then turn right into Timberlaine Road. 200m later turn left into Millward Road. Then turn right beside the 200 year old Martello Tower No.61, and walk across the piazza then up the steps to the beach. Turn left and let the shingle beach exfoliate any remaining mud on your walking boots. All being well, you’ll have the prevailing southwesterly wind at your back and not the brutal northeasterly headwind your correspondent endured. There’s no escaping the fact that it’s just over 2 miles to Martello Tower No.55 or the best part of an hour. A pair of glacé cherry coloured outfall indicators will appear a whisker before half way. 100m beyond Martello Tower No.55 turn left and amble down to the relative tranquility of the concrete road. Turn right and follow the road, over the level crossing at Normans Bay Station to the t-junction. Turn right onto Sluice Road, and remember to walk on the right hand side towards the traffic. After almost half a mile and 25m beyond the second of two brick bridges, a pair of stiles on the left lead uphill. It’s the first and only climb of the day, and very gentle at that. Once over the brow, follow the fence line down to a stile at the end of the field, then onto Hooe Level. Across the adjacent meadow a bridge awaits, then another meadow and another bridge. Turn sharp right and walk through the gate 100m to the east, then across another meadow and through another gate. Stay parallel to the reed filled ditch, following its meanders for a few minutes, underneath the power lines to a bridge. There’s a stile on the far side of the bridge, which leads through the undergrowth to the golf course. Follow the path along the periphery of the 6th fairway, then behind the tee and across the 5th fairway to a gap in the undergrowth. Emerging at the 4th hole, cross the fairway towards a small wooden post that leads into scrub, emerging at the 2nd fairway. Across the other side of this fairway, a stile

leads to a track, which continues east to Clavering Walk. At the end of Clavering Walk, turn right and amble south along Cooden Sea Road towards the railway bridge, before arriving at the 114 year old Cooden Beach Station. Journeys end has arrived. Maybe it’s time to take the train home and put those weary feet up. On the other hand it could be time for tea and cake, or something more rewarding and more indulgent. FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2 Calling all fighters for fairness! From 24 February to 8 March Fairtrade Fortnight will be back, bringing change to the masses. Sara Whatley finds out more about this national campaign
T
his year Fairtrade Fortnight will be focusing on cocoa production, and the special role women farmers play in the journey to living incomes.
Almost all cocoa farmers in West Africa live in poverty, but for the women the situation is even worse. They may plant and harvest crops, look after children, carry water, collect wood, cook and clean for the family, and transport the cocoa beans to market but often with fewer rights than men. This is why Fairtrade are campaigning for a living income to become a reality for cocoa farmers in West Africa. Fairtrade want to work with governments, chocolate companies and retailers to make the necessary commitments and policies, to make it happen.
020
Helping to support cocoa farmers can be as simple as to consider purchasing Fairtrade chocolate next time one gets the munchies. Retaining a constant demand for Fairtrade chocolate helps famers keep their incomes stable. Fairtrade is about local sustainability, fair trading terms for workers and farmers in the developing world, satisfactory working conditions and fair pay. To put it simply, Fairtrade is a way to improve the lives of people who produce some of the things we love in the UK. l

WELLBEING
In the first part of her guide, Lisa de Silva concentrates on the definition, importance and benefits of emotional wellbeing, including a precursory self-assessment ahead of part two in March
Be emotionally
well
What is Emotional Wellbeing? Emotional wellbeing is all about how effectively we process and express our feelings, both positive and negative. It does not mean feeling constantly happy and upbeat, simply that you are aware of your emotions and know how to deal with them. A person with strong emotional wellbeing will still feel the whole range of human emotions including anger, sadness and anxiety, but will know how to express and manage these difficult feelings in a healthy way. Why is Emotional Wellbeing Important? Feeling uncomfortable with our emotions and repressing or ignoring our feelings can lead to negative patterns of behaviour. This can cause us to make poor decisions regarding
Good emotional wellbeing will not insulate you from life’s challenges but it will help you to stay resilient our relationships, friendships and career choices, limiting our potential and enjoyment of life. Many of us fear being overwhelmed by difficult emotions and worry about getting stuck in them. For example, we may fear feeling sad, in case we 62 SUSSEX LIVING | February 2020
end up perpetually sad. Similarly, we may worry about expressing emotions, like anger because they conflict with our self-image. In the case of positive emotions like happiness, we may even feel we don’t deserve to feel such joy. Consequently, many of us repress how we feel by distracting ourselves with drink, food and drugs or we adopt a fake cheeriness to pretend to the outside world that we’re fine. But ultimately, repressing our emotions is not healthy – depress how you feel and you will end up depressed.
What are the Benefits of Good Emotional Wellbeing? Good emotional wellbeing will not insulate you from life’s challenges but it will help you to stay resilient, balanced, to keep a sense of perspective and make good life choices. While society upholds wealth, fame and power as the mark of a successful and fulfilled life, the real prize is good emotional wellbeing which is your greatest ally on your journey through life, helping you to tackle challenges with ease. l
How Healthy is Your Emotional Wellbeing? To assess where you may need to focus your attention in building strong emotional wellbeing, it is helpful to consider the following questions: • Can you let insults and humiliations go easily or do you brood on them? • How much does criticism and disapproval affect you? • Do you compare yourself to others often judging yourself to be inferior? • Can you admit mistakes and apologise when at fault? • Do you have a well-balanced
view of your own worth? • Can you ask for rewards that are due to you? • Are you a people pleaser? • Can you express hurt and pain without getting enraged or overly upset? • Do you fear leaving a relationship or job you are not happy in? Next month we’ll consider ways to improve our emotional wellbeing

CARE
FUNDING LONG-TERM CARE If it is time to start thinking about funding long-term care for yourself or a loved one, Lisa de Silva has compiled some options here
A
s an ageing population, many of us will need extra care and support as we grow older. Although pensions cover the cost of living during retirement, funding long-term care can be extremely expensive. Here we explore the current funding options. NHS Continuing Healthcare Funding (CHC) The NHS is responsible for funding ‘health needs’ and those suffering with a disability or complex medical problem may qualify for free NHS Continuing Healthcare Funding. Unfortunately, this is a grey area and there is no definitive or clear-cut list of the conditions and illnesses it covers. To determine whether you or a loved one qualify, an initial screening is conducted before a full assessment is carried out to decide on eligibility. CHC covers all personal and healthcare costs
64 SUSSEX LIVING | February 2020
for those that qualify and is not meanstested. If you are not eligible you can appeal the result and continue to have the situation reviewed every six months. NHS Funded Nursing Care If you are assessed as needing care from a registered nurse and live in a nursing home that provides registered nursing care, the NHS will pay a contribution towards your nursing needs. This is non-means tested and is paid directly to the care home and will reduce the amount of fees.
CHC covers all personal and healthcare costs for those that qualify and is not means-tested Local Authority Funding In some cases, your local authority may help with the cost of long-term care by funding or part-funding care home costs or the cost of specialist carers, equipment and services to stay in your own home. Both a care and financial assessment are carried out and any funding is dependent on individual
circumstances. If you are awarded funding the care services are either arranged by the local authority or you can choose to receive direct payments and organise the care yourself. Self-funding Options Those not qualifying for NHS or local authority funding need to consider how to cover their ongoing care costs. Firstly, do explore any benefits you may be entitled to, including Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit, Council Tax discounts and Winter Fuel payments. To stay in your own home an equity release plan can act as a loan secured against your property (do take professional advice before considering this option) or downsizing to a cheaper more suitable property can free up money for care. For those moving into a local authority care home but who don’t want to have to sell their home straight away, it might be possible to have a deferred payment scheme. In this instance, the local authority pay for care until the home is sold. Alternatively, those with a lump sum can buy a care annuity which is an insurance policy providing a regular income to cover care costs. The amount you pay is based on your health and life expectancy. l
Is your loved one coping this winter? Here at Sussex Housing & Care we know that winter can be the hardest time of year for the older generation, with longer nights, the colder weather and loneliness all setting in. We want to help people over 65 stay healthy and safe. Book now to get one week* free respite care. Post tax RETURNS Robin Stevenson is enjoying the post tax return slow down after the crazy January last minute rush, now the question is, could you get yours in earlier?
A
nother January has might be trading accounts, come and gone and or statements from banks and accountancy firms other financial institutions. up and down the Whilst the UK institutions country are taking a wellgenerally recognise that earned breather after working their customers might need flat out on self-assessment tax the information for their tax returns since Christmas. returns and so release it in Each year we try to avoid good time, this isn’t always the the seven day a week slog case and sometime there are by asking clients to bring in lengthy delays with us chasing their tax papers earlier in the up the information with an eye year but every year since the on the 31 January deadline introduction of self-assessment getting closer and closer. we’ve found ourselves with a Another problem is that a lot mountain of work to carry out of different countries base their in the month leading up to the taxes on a calendar year, that filing deadline of 31 January. is January to December, so Why do people leave it so me asking perhaps a US bank late to file their tax returns? for interest paid between 6th I think that it’s the result of a number of April and the following 5th April can throw their I relish the chance to different factors. reporting systems a curveball. talk through a tax Firstly, we are all busy people, busy Thirdly, some people don’t see the incentive in working to deadlines both in our work and return before it is filed, filing their tax returns early and will deliberately personal life. Whilst the intention is to get leave it until the last minute. This is a shame not just to check the everything done in good time, modern life because I think tax returns give us, the taxpayer details but to also simply doesn’t let this happen. The frantic and tax adviser, a wonderful opportunity to get last-minute shopping in the run up to together and focus on the tax being paid and how look ahead Christmas is another example. I usually start it has arisen. I relish the chance to talk through thinking about Christmas shopping a few months before but a tax return before it is filed, not just to check the details but to never find the time until the last possible moment. It’s exactly the also look ahead. Tax returns are merely a statement of what has same with tax returns, everybody knows that online tax returns happened during any particular tax year, and because they are have to be filed by 31 January which means there’s time to get a filed after the end of the tax year, that tax year has been and lot of other things done before then, and the tax return simply gone and we have little opportunity to change history. Instead, has to wait. by preparing the tax return early we have the time to discuss Secondly, some people’s tax return depends on information the coming year, how we think our income and finances might being made available in good time. The other information change, how the taxes are changing (remember new CGT rules from April 2020), and how we can make adjustments to help keep your tax under control. Sometimes, a simple adjustment to your finances at the right time can avoid you paying more tax than you should be. Much like driving a car, you might be driving in a straight line but you are constantly making small steering adjustments. It’s that same opportunity we have when preparing tax returns early, we can look ahead and maybe spot a pothole, then steer around it rather than driving over it! l Money Matters is written by Robin Stevenson CTA ATT TEP, Head of Taxation & Private Clients, Swindells LLP Chartered Accountants & Chartered Tax Advisers Tel: 01825 763366 As individual circumstances vary considerably from person to person, the views expressed in this article are meant only as a general guide, and any specific advice required should be sought from your own professional adviser or by contacting the writer at his place of work.
