BODY BUZZ

JUST ADD WATER Aside from swimming, water sports in general have been overlooked somewhat here on Body Buzz. Sasha Kanal says no more!

WHAT’S SUP? First practiced in Hawaii and now hugely popular across the globe, SUP is the world’s fastest growing water sport. Contrary to belief, a stand up paddle board varies from a surfboard in that you have a paddle (as the name suggests!) and its usually crafted differently from a surfboard. But more of that later! GET UP, STAND UP – SUP FOR FITNESS The beauty of SUP is that the activity isn’t confined to the beach and you don’t require waves to do it. In fact, many water sports centres around Sussex offer lessons and courses for adults and kids alike in reservoirs, lakes, rivers and coastal lagoons. 8 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2018

SUP FOR THE MIND There are clear benefits to be had for your mind and general wellbeing too from SUP. The freedom and peace to be gained from gliding at your own pace through water cannot be understated. Being near water is naturally calming plus you’re fully immersing yourself in nature and all whilst exploring your surroundings.

The freedom and peace to be gained from gliding at your own pace through water cannot be understated It’s great for your overall fitness too. SUP is a brilliant all body workout as you tend to use your mid back, shoulders, arms (triceps and biceps) a lot. Plus, the art of keeping yourself balanced and centred while you glide

ALL THE GEAR Stand up paddle boards come as either rigid boards or an inflatable watercraft. So now all you need is the gear. Most water sports clubs where you choose to go will provide you with the kit when you take a lesson. If you plan to do the sport regularly what you choose will depend on your budget, storage space and how far you live from the water you’re choosing to paddle board on. Any good water sports shop will help you find the right board for your size. Don’t forget to check what’s included - some come with paddles, straps and pumps as standard. So, what are you waiting for? Get out of your comfort zone and try a watersport today. l

CAUTION: If you have any long-standing health concerns, always consult your GP if you’re starting a new exercise.

H

ere in our beautiful corner of the world, we have access to kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, waterskiing, jet skiing and kite surfing, whether on one of the many beautiful Sussex beaches or inland at a reservoir or river. This month however, we look at the joys of Stand Up Paddle boarding or SUP as it’s known in water sports circles.

is a wonderful way of working every muscle group, strengthening your legs and maintaining your core balance. A bonus is that it’s a low impact activity but you can burn up to 430 calories per hour leisurely paddling at a casual pace (about twice that of walking).

HAIR REPLACEMENT FOR HAIR LOSS Is your confidence affected by Alopecia, Baldness, Thinning Hair and Trichollotimania? Regain your confidence – Hair Loss doesn’t have to be a problem! Testimonial: “Thinning hair is no joke, as anyone who has suffered this confidence-buster will confirm – it is demeaning, plays havoc with your self-esteem and costs a fortune in ‘remedies’ that are full of promises but fail to deliver. I was in despair until I found a specialist in London who offered a hair-replacement solution which didn’t require a lottery-win to make it affordable. So, I signed up and within a couple of months began to experience a return to my former self. But, after a while my husband, who did the driving, began to shed a few hairs himself as he braved the M25 and south London for my monthly ‘fix’ – we then moved to Eastbourne, and I soon realised that the increased distance was to be the kiss of death for my solution. Driving through Eastbourne town last year, my husband exclaimed excitedly, “There’s a Hair Replacement Studio! He stopped the car, I took the phone number, and wasted no time in making the call. I’ve never looked back. After a comprehensive consultation, Oscar set me up with my first appointment at which all my problems disappeared. I now have a full head of totally undetectable real hair which Oscar ‘doctors’ every six weeks or so, I did not have to win the lottery to pay for it, and I can drive myself there as it’s so local. My husband is ecstatic, my confidence is For a full consultation on how Oscars Hair and Beauty can help call: restored and my hair looks lovely (even if I say so myself!) holiday activities Wondering how to keep the children entertained for six full weeks? Hanna Prince and Sara Whatley come to the rescue with these family-friendly activities to make this summer holiday their best one yet

MUSEUMS, THEATRES, ARTS AND SCIENCE

Whether your children are history buffs, science fanatics or tractor obsessives, there’s an endless list of museums, theatres, arts and science centres in the Sussex area to tickle their fancy. Many museums are free to visit (although making a donation is always

appreciated), and others run activities and craft days during the summer holidays – but book early to ensure a place. Sussex boasts some fantastic art galleries showcasing both local talent and acclaimed artists, many of which are also free to visit. There are numerous National Trust properties in Sussex, many of which have beautiful gardens to enjoy in the summer.

BEACH DAYS, ROCK POOLING AND HUNTING FOR FOSSILS A day at the seaside is a must for every family this summer – swimming costume, beach ball, good book and off you go! Pack a picnic or have a treat of fish and chips on the beach, and don’t forget to indulge in an ice cream too. We are lucky in Sussex to have a

ACTIVITIES

NATURE TRAILS, WILDLIFE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

If you’re keen to get the children outdoors, don’t call it a walk – call it a nature trail. Try the Ashdown Forest for fascinating free trails of various lengths, or head to one of the area’s historic houses for more family-friendly outdoor trails. Nature reserves are also a great place to enjoy the coast or countryside and specially to see wildlife. Pack some binoculars and see what birds, butterflies and bugs you can spot. This is also an ideal activity for budding photographers. Macro photography can be practiced on flowers and insects or capture the rich beauty of Sussex with its abundant land and seascape opportunities.

seaside can be fun; turn detective and go fossil hunting! Search for echinoids around the Seven Sisters and dinosaur footprints at Hastings. Visit https:// ukfossils.co.uk for a free online guide to locations and fossil types.

for special cards or pictures. And all those photographs could be made into a holiday memory collage. Why not explore the holiday activities at local arts and crafts clubs too?

FAMILY SPORTS

OPEN FARMS AND HORSE RIDING

Nestled in the Sussex countryside you can find many lovely open farms to visit. Great for both sunny and rainy days, lots have indoor and outdoor play areas, cafes and of course a variety of animals to see. Find out about feeding times before you go for the best animal experience. If you fancy a more hands on approach then why not give horse riding a go? Look out for offers at local riding schools during the school holidays. Some local centres offer care days, where children can spend the day learning to look after a pony as well as enjoying several riding lessons.

GET CRAFTY

On rainy days, combat cabin fever with craft time. Try making your own play dough, creating a Very Hungry Caterpillar from coloured paper or decorating origami finger puppets. Large shells collected from your beach days could be threaded to make jewellery or hanging charms,

Try making your own play dough or decorating origami finger puppets and small shells make fun decorations glued onto everyday items – an old plate, toy or even a pair of shoes could be transformed into surreal shell art! Pressing flowers is another pleasing craft activity, and once they are done can be mounted or framed 12 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2018

Use up some of that excess energy by taking the whole family on a fun cycling or scooting adventure. Stick to easy, relatively flat trails with plenty of pit stops, such as the Cuckoo Trail or the seafront promenade between Brighton Marina and Saltdean. Swimming is another winner, and can be enjoyed both indoor at leisure centres and outdoor in lidos or the sea. A friends and family game of rounders or cricket is great fun and can be finished off with a celebratory tea party or BBQ.

ACTIVITIES

ANIMAL SANCTUARIES AND RESCUE CENTRES

Support a good cause and keep the nippers entertained at the same time with a trip to your local animal sanctuary or rescue centre. Plenty welcome visitors and many lay on childfriendly activities during the holidays such as family fun days and fairs or challenges to get involved with. Have a look round at all the animals then stop for tea and cake in many of the cafes on offer.

OUTDOOR PLAYGROUNDS

When the local playground starts to pall, pile into the car and head somewhere a little more exciting. Tilgate Park has everything from a maze to themed gardens, while Friston Forest is packed with dens and play trails. Some local woodlands also have outdoor fitness circuits and treetop adventure facilities. Outdoor activity centres are widely available in Sussex where you can have a go at anything from mountain biking to kayaking and zip wires to climbing walls and bouldering.

If you’re keen to get the children outdoors, don’t call it a walk – call it a nature trail

CAMPING

A night under the stars is an adventure at any age but is particularly magical when you are a child. For an easy option set up camp in the garden. As you are so close to home there is no problem with lugging out bundles of blankets, pillows and even rugs to make it an extra cosy affair, and a few strategically placed nightlights in glass jars will transform the garden into a magical fairyland. Or venture further afield! There are plenty of great campsites in Sussex from the basic ones to the all-out glamping options. The choice, as they say, is yours! l

LEARN A NEW SKILL

This summer holiday, give your children the chance to learn something new. It could be anything from flying a kite to juggling – or you could splash out for an intensive few days of training in tennis, martial arts, climbing or musical theatre. Summer schools run in various capacities in Sussex, from those aimed at older children offering courses in subjects such as STEM or Humanities, to summer schools in dance, music and drama sometimes culminating in a performance. This is one surefire way of building your child’s confidence.

OWNERS Louisa is a designer and Charlie Nicholls a property developer. They live with Phoebe their seven-year-old daughter and a cat called Spike. They moved in eleven years ago. What do they think makes a house a home? “The open fire crackling in the grate on a cold winters day whilst we are huddled on the sofa listening to the rain beating against the window panes.” BATHROOM The antique enamel bath in the family bathroom was painted in a fresh blue and sits on dark flooring tiles

Louisa Nicholls does not use the word ‘wreck’ lightly when she describes the cottage she and her husband Charlie bought eleven years ago. “It was rotting from the roof to the floorboards. In some places you could put your fingers through gaps above the windows. It had been so neglected nobody else wanted it. We were the only bidders. Even the property developers were put off by its run down state and to make matters worse, it was listed.” When they first drove up the drive late one night Louisa says it looked so spooky she refused to get out of the car. It was definitely not love at first sight. But on the allotted viewing date, their hearts skipped a beat and as Louisa admits, “we did a U turn and being the impetuous couple that we are, we decided we had to have it, especially as only that morning we had agreed we could not spend another day living in our modern box.” Set in a remote and beautiful spot surrounded by meadows on the edge of a natural pond shaded over by a huge old willow tree, it had charm, character and a lot of potential, and as Louisa remembers, “the facade

HOUSE A sixteenth century grade two listed cottage with an ugly 1970s extension – replaced three years ago by a new, but madeto-look-old, clapper board extension. What the family love most about this house: “The creaking floor boards which remind us of its 400 year history; it has always been a family home and has a very cosy, welcoming safe feel. We always wanted to live in an old house.” ROOMS Hall, lobby, sitting rooms for winter and summer, study, kitchen/dining room, four bedrooms and one bathroom and two en suite shower rooms.

Louisa’s nifty money saving ideas left a generous budget for fabrics and pretty sofas. “As an interior designer, fabrics for me are so important. In fact they are my passion,” she smiles and points to a huge pile of fabric samples tucked into the corner of her study. “Every now and then I rummage through the pile for a remnant to reupholster a chair which Spike our cat has eaten a chunk out of or I make up another cushion to ring the changes.” Finding quirky bits and things you like, “takes a life time of collecting so I keep collecting,” says Louisa. “I hate to throw pretty things away just because I am running out of space.” Living in a house which is already intrinsically eccentric, Louisa claims, gave her license to incorporate some crazy theatrical touches, which she celebrates in what she describes as “her little vignettes. The Roman busts which hopefully look like marble are just plastic painted to look otherwise.” She smiles. The giant size spoon and

fork hanging on the wall of the dining room stimulates lots of dinner party conversations, and ever since Louisa spotted them on an American website, they went to the top of her must-have list. Eventually tracked down in Florida, Charlie and Louisa wrapped them in bubble wrap and persuaded the airline to allow them on board. “I am sure if we had a knife as well, they would have been confiscated.” Louisa’s final analysis has an eternal ring of truth voiced by many owners of old properties. “This house is an on going project and I am not sure when or if we shall ever finish it. We have become super tolerant of its foibles. Everything creaks including the floorboards, there are no straight walls and every doorframe is too low, but in our eyes, all that just adds to its charm. We love it, creaks and all.” l

COMMUNITY

With a rich history and plenty of things to keep its residents entertained, Peter d’Aguilar tells us more about the market town of Heathfield

HELLO HEATHFIELD

T

he small East Sussex market town of Heathfield lies equidistant between Eastbourne to the south and Tunbridge Wells to the north, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. While there is some evidence of local Stone Age settlement, Heathfield’s modern origins stem from the granting of a Market Charter in 1316. Over the centuries Heathfield - or Heffle as it was originally called - has achieved fame as the place where Jack Cade was killed after trying to overthrow King Henry VI. It is also the

38 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2018

birthplace of Robert Hunt, the first Protestant minister to preach in America. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Heathfield became an important centre of the iron industry. With the arrival of the railway in 1880, known locally as the Cuckoo Line, the centre of Heathfield moved from the picturesque village now known as Old Heathfield to its present location – hence its Victorian and Edwardian architectural characteristics. In 1968 the branch line closed and has now become the Cuckoo Trail; part of the National Cycle Network and popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Each year Heathfield welcomes the start of spring by hosting the Heffle Cuckoo Fair, a celebration dating back to the 14th century. For over 70 years the Heathfield and District Agricultural Show has taken place on the second May Bank Holiday and is now one of the largest oneday agricultural shows in the country. Since 1997 Heathfield has held the Le Marche Anglo/French market on August Bank Holiday Monday. The event is free and features market stalls from French and English traders, as well as live music and a magic show. On the last Saturday in November local organisations hold a Christmas Family Fun Day to mark the switching-on of the Christmas lights.
Heathfield parish church is dedicated to All Saints and has an example of a Harmer terracotta decorated gravestone

Since 1997 Heathfield has held the Le Marche Anglo/French market on August Bank Holiday Monday in the churchyard. The nearby mansion of Heathfield Park dates from the seventeenth century. In a corner of the estate stands a memorial named the Gibraltar Tower. On the edge of the parish to the north-east, Braylsham Castle is a modern house built in imitation of a moated medieval manor house - complete with working drawbridge. Heathfield has thriving cricket and rugby teams, badminton and bridge clubs, a choral society and a drama club, a branch of the Rotary Club and a silver band. THE INTERVIEW

GERARD & JONICA FOX WINEMAKERS

Sussex wine continues to be big news with growing conditions rivaling those in Champagne. Wine lovers, Gerard and Jonica Fox, shared their enthusiasm with Peter d’Aguilar

I

t would be an understatement to say that Gerard and Jonica Fox are passionate about sparkling wine. After pursuing careers in finance and marketing, they moved to a house called Hobdens on the southern outskirts of Mayfield which came with a five acre, south facing, gently-sloping plot of land that had previously been used for growing hops and grazing sheep. They had both always loved champagne, so it seemed only logical to plant their own vineyard. “Jonica has always had a special talent for growing things,” says Gerard. “She also has an exceptional palate.” They planted their first vines in 2004 and harvested their first vintage in 2009. “We use a combination of lower-yielding Burgundy clones and

Champagne clones for structure to create wines with enticing fruit flavours, aroma and complexity,” says Jonica. “With our limited-edition cuveés, we mix traditional winemaking skills with contemporary innovation to make limited quantities of top quality English Fizz. We like to reflect our High Weald surroundings - its soils, topography and microclimates. Our emphasis is on thoughtful, highly skilled work in the vineyard and minimal, light manipulation in the winery.”

Our emphasis is on thoughtful, highly skilled work in the vineyard and minimal, light manipulation in the winery A new plot planted out next to the winery is showing the first signs of early growth. Looking after the surrounding environment to offset the monoculture of the vines is also important to the Foxes. They use sympathetic noninvasive management of the field margins, hedgerows, ponds and copses to encourage flora and fauna. In the springtime, the vineyard is flanked by a carpet of bluebells. “Sussex is blessed with a similar climate and soil types to Champagne, in our case the clays mixed with Sussex greensands,” explains Gerard. “The rest is up to us. Producing top quality grapes is a labour-intensive process. Attention to detail is essential. We do most of the work by hand. Grapes are probably the most complex and misunderstood fruit, and good wine depends on good grapes

– so it’s essential to get the fruit right. Through constant monitoring, we can ameliorate some of the destructive effects of bad weather.” Sparkling wine will always be associated with celebration but the Foxes see it as becoming more democratised. They are not fans of exclusivity and are on a crusade to take the mystery and hyperbole out of winespeak. Matching the right wine with the right food is another of their goals, as it can make a huge difference to people’s enjoyment. They also welcome the resurgence of local produce, as an alternative to homogenised supermarket fare. Together the Foxes make a powerful team. While Jonica is the creative force and Gerard the numbers man, their roles overlap and complement each other – Gerard drives the tractor, but it is Jonica that mends it when it breaks down. Above all else, they are genuine wine lovers; evangelical in their shared enthusiasm and quest for perfection and innovation. “Our aim is to make delicious, lifeenhancing bubbly,” says Jonica, bubbling over with enthusiasm. “I just want people to go ‘whoa, this is lovely!” l

LOCAL WALK

Inspired by a recent Sussex Living article on the benefits of walking, our former colleague, Lucy Sayers, ventured to Chanctonbury Ring with our resident rambler, Robert Veitch for a breath of fresh, downland air

T

urn left out of the car park at the southern end of Chanctonbury Ring Road, walking south for 100m before turning right for the bridleway. A metal 7-bar gate that needs navigating some 50m later is evidence this is the correct path. The wooded glades may be moist underfoot, but generally it’s pleasant. “A good ramble along the contours, through the downland microclimate” according to Lucy.

CHANCTONBURY RING Just past an overgrown disused quarry on the left, is the rusty red corrugated structure of Owlscroft Barn on the right. Beyond the barn the path turns left and uphill, before turning right by two decaying tree trunks, after which it hugs the contour lines a little longer. Bear left when the path splits in two, turning left again at the T-junction that follows. From here it’s 400m to the summit. There’s no escaping the feeling this is the north face of the Eiger; your heart will be thumping, your lungs gasping, and your brow glowing. Ascending above the tree line the panorama north of the downs is to be commended, utterly glorious whatever the weather. We paused at the gate, the ‘rest and be thankful gate’ as Lucy called it, catching her breath, “that’s quite a climb, but well worth the effort.” From here it’s less than 100m to the top gate and summit. The path skirts around Chanctonbury

Ring, it’s history buried beneath arboreal shadows. In another era this was an Iron Age fort, subsequently inhabited by Romans. Trees were first planted in 1760 when Charles Goring (from Wiston) decided to beautify the hilltop. Most were blown down in the Great Storm of 1987, and they’ve since been replanted. The route follows the South Downs Way, sweeping to the right and downhill, two lines of gravel in the grass. Beyond the cattle grid, the path widens and gradually arcs left. At the four-way fingerpost, keep going, along the straight flat path ahead, with the greenery of Lion’s Bank on the left. Walk between crops towards the horizon, and then beyond. Almost 1km over the horizon a trig point will appear in the field on the right. Steyning should be visible to the east and Cissbury Ring to the south. A five-way fingerpost is 250m beyond the trig point. At the Walter Longmead memorial turn right onto the Monarch’s Way and follow the cinder path between the fences. The Monarch’s Way is the estimated 615 mile escape route of Charles I after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in

The path skirts around Chanctonbury Ring, it’s history buried beneath arboreal shadows 1651. The path rises over a brow and then heads downhill. Tarmac underfoot indicates this path once served another role, and a solitary cats eye confirms it. The hollow at the bottom of the hill is known as No Man’s Land although we wondered whether it really belonged to Norman! A chalky flint track leads up the other side of the hollow, but it’s easier on the feet trekking the grassy central reservation. The gradient eases off, after which it’s easy walking. Off to the left Cissbury Ring feels close enough to reach out and touch. Several paths coalesce at a junction. Turn right, almost back on oneself, and begin the hike back to the car park.

The walk gains altitude, but only gradually. Veer right at the split and keep going, past a couple of pine trees and the woods at Stump Barn (the barn is no longer there). Over the hilltop, the path drops down to the four-way fingerpost. Beyond that, the ground falls away as the path enters Chalkpit Wood, descending the steep scarp slope of the downs via Wiston Bostal. It might be a little slippery in places when damp. There’s a wooden teepee about half way down, and a metal gate marks the bottom. Beyond this it’s just a short distance back to the car park. Lucy beamed, “I feel I’ve been on a real adventure, that I’ve done something rewarding with my day and earned the right to put my feet up tonight. This makes me appreciate the landscape we have here in Sussex, and inspires me to go walking more often.” l We are very grateful to Robert Veitch for bringing us new and exciting local walks every month. Robert insists on testing all routes personally, making sure they are suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest

A STORY LIKE THE WIND

THE FALL GUY

THE LAST TUDOR by Philippa Gregory

by Gill Lewis

This starts very slowly, but it is well worth sticking with, as the first part is a series of clues about the psychology of the narrator, Matthew. Nothing is obvious, and the plot doesn’t really take off until two thirds of the way through. The setting is just too perfect, so you know something will go wrong with the triangular relationship of Matthew, his cousin Charlie and Charlie’s wife Chloe. As Matthew is a failed chef, there’s a lot of detail about the food he cooks, but it isn’t boring

This is written in the three very different voices of the Grey sisters, granddaughters of Henry VII. Lady Jane Grey is the familiar one – Protestant queen for only nine days after the death of fifteenyear-old Edward VI, and beheaded by Mary, who brought back the Catholic religion. Jane was the academic one, one of the most learned young women of her day despite being only seventeen at the time of her death. The next sister, Katherine, is the most ignorant and gullible, who will bend with the

This tale of refugees adrift in an inflatable boat is endorsed by Amnesty International. Each person offers some of what they have to the others – bread, lemonade, a shawl. But Rami, the narrator, has only brought his violin with him, so he refuses to take anything. All he has to offer is music, and stories. The story he tells is of the origin of the violin as a descendant of the horsehead fiddle, which is debatable but doesn’t really matter because he’s a good storyteller. The setting is

by James Lasdun

Before long, you’re screaming at Matthew to do the obvious thing and I learned a lot. Before long, you’re screaming at Matthew to do the obvious thing and tackle the right person about his suspicions. But he’s oh so good at avoiding the issue, and it all comes home to roost in the end. It’s hard to review this without giving away any spoilers. The writing is of a high standard, and all the characters are flawed in one way or another. The background detail that explains some of the events comes rather late in the tale, but it’s enough to make the damaged teenager that Matthew used to be behave the way he does. It’s not a long read, but it becomes more compulsive towards the end.

The girls are pawns in the political life of the times prevailing religion and thinks more of dresses and jewels than theology. The youngest sister, Mary, is described as very small with a twisted spine, but is probably the most realistic of the three. The girls are pawns in the political life of the times, and after Queen Mary dies and Elizabeth succeeds to the throne Katherine and Mary are next in line. Consequently, they cannot marry without the queen’s permission, and when they both do so they are imprisoned and treated very cruelly. It’s a long book but a fascinating one. None of the girls are particularly likeable but their motivations and actions are believable and well described.

The story he tells is of the origin of the violin Mongolia, where wild horses run free on the steppe. I’ve been there, and listened to traditional musicians. It’s a haunting sound, and the story of the rescued horse and the tail-hairs used for the bow suit the situation, at sea, miles from anywhere. I’m not really sure what age-group this is aimed at, as the language can be very sophisticated and the story doesn’t really have a beginning or an end – it’s an episode in the life of a group of refugees which could represent any set of displaced persons. The illustrations by Jo Weaver, however, are wonderful, and the hardback book itself is beautifully made and a delight to hold.

Rolo the Border Terrier finds summer months the perfect time to forage for extra snacks, and his apprentice Teddy is catching on quickly!

It’s a Dog’s Life O

ne of the things I enjoy about this time of year is the summer food. Now I think it’s fair to say that I have a fairly eclectic taste when it comes to edibles, and, to be honest, the not quite edible, as I don’t want to risk missing something good. After all, if it turns out that something I’ve consumed isn’t really digestible, it usually finds its own way out, one end or the other, and I’ve always got staff on hand to help in the clearing up department. I do, however, have some dietary preferences that are well served by the summer months. Take soft fruit. I try to at every opportunity! ‘Her Indoors’ grows strawberries and blueberries in the veg plot and little Alpine strawberries free range in the side border which are absolutely perfect for a small dog with a good sense of smell. I wonder if my apprentice, Teddy, knows how to ‘pick your own’? If not, he soon will do. When Teddy first came to us, he was

a slow and frankly picky eater. I soon trained him out of that nonsense. Once I had finished my own food, unless ‘Her Indoors’ spoilt the fun by feeding us separately, I immediately went over to Teddy’s bowl and finished his off too. This has made him much quicker at eating his food, in fact, he often finishes before me now which just shows how effective my instruction has been.

What could be nicer than a picnic blanket with an array of food laid out Another summer edible that I enjoy is ice cream. They make special ice cream for dogs, but, if I’m entirely honest, I prefer the human kind. It’s not that I’m specifically given any, it’s just that people seem incapable of eating one without dribbling or dropping some and I’m very good at clearing up. In

addition, I’m not above a bit of timely theft if someone is foolish enough to sit down on the grass and start waving an ice cream or lolly around. I might be senior but it’s amazing how high I can jump with a little incentivising. And that brings me on to the happy topic of picnics. What could be nicer than a picnic blanket with an array of food laid out. You don’t even have to jump – perfect! ‘Her Indoors’ took Teddy and myself recently, on a Border Terrier walk with a picnic lunch for the people. She had to try and eat a packed lunch whilst sitting on the floor with both Teds and I in close proximity. I have to say her reflexes are pretty good for a woman of her age! Still, if you can’t get at your own picnic, there’s always someone else’s, and ‘Her Indoors’ is also good at dragging me off other people’s food and apologising profusely. I don’t know what her problem is. Summer eating is all about alfresco dining and sharing with others… l

NATURAL LIVING

Ruth Lawrences describes how the brilliantly bright plumage of the kingfisher looks almost exotic in comparison to the modest hues of many birds native to Britain

King of the River I

f you spend enough time by the water this summer, you might be lucky enough to catch a flash of deep metallic blue, too fast to focus upon as it speeds past. The kingfisher is one of our most spectacular and elusive birds, that once seen is never forgotten. After glimpsing one or two during childhood, I lost sight of these startling birds until I came to live in Sussex. Since then I’ve seen them hurtle over slow moving rivers, dart across Ardingly reservoir and most surprisingly, watch one dash between trees in Brighton Cemetery. Their flight is so rapid that they are difficult to see and most sightings are simply an impression of vivid colour, then they are

The kingfisher must eat its own body weight in fish each day. Hunting is a full time occupation, particularly during breeding season

gone. They fly low, which again makes them harder to see against reflections in water where they hunt for fish and aquatic insects. Territory is extremely important for kingfishers. Each bird tends to cover about a kilometre of river but may extend to five times this distance. They start to contest territories by mid September and a breeding pair will often divide their summer territory between them. Slow moving, shallow rivers and streams clean enough to supply abundant small fish are their ideal hunting grounds and overhanging branches are essential as perches from which to watch for prey. The water needs to be as still as possible to make viewing clear. Once the bird has located

its prey and assessed the water’s depth, it dives in pursuit. At the point of entry into the water, the beak is open and the eyes closed by a third eyelid; this is why pinpoint accuracy is essential as the bird is effectively sightless as it enters the water. After returning to the perch with its catch, the kingfisher strikes the fish against the branch to kill it. They seem to prefer fish just over an inch long but can deal with something much larger. The kingfisher must eat its own bodyweight in fish each day. Hunting is a full time occupation, particularly during breeding season. The nest is dug into a vertical, vegetation free riverbank and lies at the end of a tunnel two to three feet long. Two or three broods are raised in swift succession and each chick can consume up to 18 fish a day. Once they leave the nest they are only fed for four days before the adults drive them out of the territory to start the next brood. Kingfishers are surprisingly short lived and few live longer than a single breeding season. Perhaps this explains their velocity, as though they are trying to cram in a longer life in such a short time. It makes a sighting of one of these elusive and notoriously shy birds doubly precious, a rare jewel darting by in sunlight. l www.rspb.org.uk

Tour a Méridien

BIKE RIDE

With the Tour de France beginning on the 7th July, here’s Robert Veitch’s mini grand tour of the rolling landscape, north of the South Downs. But do you have the Va Va Froome to wear the maillot jaune?

G

rab your bike, helmet and drink, then join the route at the point that suits you best. We arrived by train at Plumpton Station, riding clockwise, crossing the Prime Meridian twice along the way. From the station, cycle north through Plumpton Green, gently uphill to the very end of Station Road. Turn right, heading southeast for almost one mile, before turning left into Honeypot Lane. Continue to the junction with the A275 in South Chailey one mile further on. Turn left remembering this is a main road. After ¾ mile turn right into Markstakes Lane, enjoying the quiet solitude that now accompanies the route. Passing Markstakes Farm on the left, the ride drifts from the western hemisphere into the eastern. It’s not marked, but is pleasing all the same. Shortly after, swing right on to Town Littleworth Road and cycle for almost another two miles, eventually reaching the gradual incline at the bottom of Deadmantree Hill. Turn left where the signpost indicates ‘Barcombe 1m’. ¾ mile further on, turn right at the fingerpost for Hamsey Road and after ½ mile bear right and south towards the Downs. Turn right at the

We named the climb ‘Le petit pic méridien’ next junction and continue south. The wooded crest of Mount Harry can be seen off to the right, a couple of miles distant as the crow flies. One mile further on, turn right where the fingerpost indicates Cooksbridge. The road is narrow and eases uphill. To honour its limited stature we named the climb ‘Le petit pic méridien!’ As the hedges fade away a rough lay-by appears on the left. The panorama is a little slice of heaven in good weather that’s well worth stopping for. Malling Hill, Cliffe Hill and the Glynde wind turbine are to the east with Mount Harry and Blackcap to the south. Eagle eyed riders will notice the Meridian marker on the right-hand side of the road. Pedalling from the eastern hemisphere, back to the western, follow the lane to the end, back to the A275.

Turn left, heading south over the level crossing at Cooksbridge Station. Take the right-hand turn (B2116) towards Plumpton and Ditchling. Follow this road, along the foot of the Downs for a couple of miles or so, before turning right into Plumpton Lane, by a brown sign for the racecourse. From here, it’s two breezy miles back to Plumpton Station. Approaching the level crossing, the racecourse is on the left. Back at the station the ‘vue panoramique’ of the Downs is well earned and hopefully the train will be on time. ‘Chapeau au cycliste’ enjoy your maillot jaune! l

BLOOMING TIMES

Focus on

FRUIT The crops are coming in! Flo Whitaker explains how to harvest your fruit and veg regularly and make the most of summer’s bounty!

If it’s a persistent problem, try planting some mildewresistant varieties. Keeping foliage dry by watering the soil, not the leaves, helps, as does having good air circulation around the plants. Bear that in mind when pruning out old stems in spring - leave plenty of space and air flow for new growth. t’s all go on the fruit and veg patch in July. Pests and diseases seldom trouble rhubarb, Regular harvesting and inspection of but it is known for being a ‘Goldilocks’ plant. crops, (daily, if possible) is the key. Far Rhubarb is ultra-sensitive to environmental better to pick small-size produce, conditions and dislikes being too wet, too dry, rather than delay for a few days and be too hot or too cold - like Goldilocks, it wants faced with unappetising bullet-hard peas everything to be ‘just right’. You should stop and over-ripe fruit. You’ll also be able to picking rhubarb by mid-July, but if you have quickly spot any problems as they arise. vigorous plants, you can continue with some Blackcurrants, raspberries and gentle harvesting, although the stems will gooseberries are reliable croppers that eventually become woody and unpalatable. are relatively easy to grow, but they Rhubarb is a ‘Goldilocks’ After using so much energy during spring, can suffer from mildew, (a white/grey plant that dislikes being rhubarb needs moisture to bulk up its mould.) The too hot, too cold, too the driest months, you can help by giving microscopic spores easily spread and the wet or too dry - it wants the surrounding soil a really good soaking, condition is often weather-related; bad in everything to be ‘just right’ followed by a thick mulch of compost or some years, absent in others. leaf mould. Rhubarb sometimes produces curious-looking flower shoots. If left, they will rob energy from the plant, so cut them off at the base. Strawberry plants produce ‘runners’ in high summer; long, non-fruiting stems with ‘nodes’ - specially adapted joints that root when they touch soil. Runners should be removed, unless you want to make more plants for free! Strawberry plants run out of steam after a few years so it’s always useful to have some vigorous replacements in reserve. Cut stiff wire into 10 cm lengths and bend them to make ‘U’ shaped pins. Fill small pots (approx. 8 cms diameter) with gritty compost, lay a runner across a pot, press the node area gently into the surface of the compost and secure it in place with a pin - you may get several new plants from each runner. Keep the compost damp until the new plants are well-developed, (4-6 weeks), then cut away the nowredundant runners to make individual potted plants that can be easily transplanted. They will happily overwinter and crop for you next summer. l

GARDENING

CHARITY GARDEN TRAIL

Geoff Stonebanks tells us about the garden trails in July raising money for Macmillian Cancer Support and the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton

Coastguard Cottage

T

he 28th and 29th July sees the 7th annual garden trail staged by Driftwood Fundraising Group, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton. The centre has been designed with input from people affected by cancer to make it the best place to offer the support and services that people in Sussex need. It is also one of the venues open over the weekend, as it too has a small garden terrace, so visitors can see where the money they are donating is being spent. However, the trail will be officially opened in my own garden, Driftwood, 4 Marine Drive, in Seaford , BN25 2RS at 11am on the 28th by TV Gardener, Jim Buttress, of BBC2’s Big Allotment fame! The garden has featured on BBC Gardeners’ World and won several awards for national gardening competitions. More importantly, since it first opened in 2009, I have raised a staggering £100,000 for various charities, over half of that for Macmillan Cancer Support. Enjoy home-made tea and cakes served on vintage china on trays in the garden overlooking the sea. In Newhaven, Gill Weaver will be opening her amazing coastal garden at 5 Old Coastguard Cottages, off Geneva Road. This is a very steep terraced gravel garden combining strong landscaping with much lush eclectic planting and some very unusual found objects, marine and otherwise. It is truly a vibrant and intriguing place to visit.

Another garden in Seaford is Steve and Christina’s, Lavender Cottage at 69 Steyne Road. This has a flint walled front garden with cottage, coastal and kitchen gardens and plenty of places to enjoy a cream tea. The back garden has a terraced bank planted up with trees, shrubs and lavenders. Climb the steps up to the balcony and enjoy the iconic view of Seaford Head. Don’t miss The Seaford Sunshine Strummers Ukulele Band playing here during their Sunday opening! This year there are 23 gardens opening their gates across the weekend, with 3 on Sunday only, 4 on Saturday only and 16 opening both dates. 6 of the gardens are opening for the trail for the very first time in 2018. Many of the gardens will be serving delicious home-made teas and cakes and some selling garden art. Make sure you check the web site before you plan your day. Full details of all Driftwood the gardens, location maps and directions can be found at www. macmillangardentrail. co.uk or by calling Geoff on 01323 899296. Tickets can be purchased in the first garden visited and cost £2 per garden or buy a day saver ticket for £6 on each day which gives access to all gardens. Dogs on leads are allowed in many gardens too, look out for the doggy head on the website. l

CHARITY

IT’S ALL ABOUT CHARITY Celebrating 20 Years Children with Cancer Fund will be 20 years old this July. The Trustees and Team cannot believe how far the Charity has come in this time. Children with Cancer Fund began in 1998 around the kitchen table when four family members agreed they wanted to help others. In the last couple of years CWCF has gone from strength to strength; they now have an office, three paid staff and a team of Volunteers who help in the office and at outside events and functions. In 2015 CWCF received a Queens Award for Voluntary Service (the equivalent to an MBE for the Charity) something they are extremely proud of despite not quite believing it at the time! They currently have 122 families who they care for by offering wishes, days out and treats every now and again. These are not just for the children but for their immediate family as well, as this horrible

disease affects entire families. CWCF hope to bring smiles to families faces in East Sussex and make lasting memories for them that they will cherish forever. CWCF very much relies on the generosity of those who fundraise for us, whether this is by hosting an event, day out, cinema screening, or a raffle and they wouldn’t be able to provide the service without them or the help of the amazing Volunteers. Let’s see what another 20 years brings… For more information on donating or volunteering for Children with Cancer Fund visit: www.childrenwithcancerfund.org.uk

Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Book a talk about this life-saving work The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance is inviting local groups, clubs, societies and other organisations to book a talk (free of charge) to find out more about the work of the charity. By inviting one of their volunteer speakers to your group, you will be helping to raise awareness of their life-saving work and therefore ensuring it can be there for those who need it, now and in the future. For more information or to book a talk, please contact: 01622 833 833 talks@kssairambulance.org.uk

Cycling Without Age - Seaford Chapter Cycling Without Age - Seaford Chapter is a group of local volunteers and ‘pilots’, led by Pete Tattam. They are dedicated to taking local elders and care home residents out on ‘trishaw’ cycle rides to feel the wind in their hair. They want to bring generations closer together using special trishaws - threewheel cycles with a passenger cab out front. They have electrical power assist, so you don’t need to be super-sporty to be a volunteer cycle pilot. The rides will be comfortable, fun and free.

On Yer Bike! Dust off the Lycra, put on a helmet and take to the road in a 54-mile challenge from London to Brighton in aid of The Disabilities Trust. You can raise funds for people with acquired brain injury, complex physical or learning disabilities and adults and children with autism by riding down to Sussex’s picturesque villages and the beautiful South Downs on September 16th, 2018. You can join as a team or individually. They offer riders a free lunch, mechanical support and finishers’ mementos, so what are you waiting for? Get on your bike and fill in a registration form now: www.thedtgroup.org/get-involved/ fundraising-events/london-to-brighton-bike-ride or call 01444 237286 email fundraising@thedtgroup.org

Raising £8,000 to Buy and Run a Trishaw for Seaford

Passengers will experience the town and nature close-up from the trishaw. It also provides opportunities for elders to regain social connection and for people to tell their story in the environment where they have lived their lives. The work is intended to build bridges between generations and reinforce trust, respect and the social glue of society. Both cycle pilots and passengers alike will enjoy the physical and emotional well-being benefits. The joy of riding in the trishaw cab will stimulate spirits to fly and stories to flow!

Care for Couples at The Laurels

A

significant number of elderly people who need to go into a care home are currently living with their spouse and very often the thought of being separated from their partner can be heart breaking. Frequently a partner is remaining in the family home and perhaps feeling guilty that they can no longer provide the care their companion needs. Sometimes both partners are in need of care and yet their needs are very different, again leading to them being separated at this time. In order to address the issue of couples with different care needs, The Laurels Nursing Home in Hastings aims to specifically support couples who want to stay together. The home has now introduced a new luxury suite alongside its 50 bedrooms in a homely environment. The suite provides every home comfort including smart TV with video

stream and modern music system with the added benefit of 24 hour care. The spacious room offers a seating area with views to the garden through a Juliette balcony, an en-suite and, most importantly, the opportunity for couples to be together. “This valued addition to our accommodation can be adapted to support single or double occupation either for respite care or on a permanent basis,” Sally Bossom from The Laurels told us. “We welcome visitors and would love to show you what we have to offer at The Laurels.” From landscaped gardens with a soothing water feature to tastefully decorated rooms, a cinema room and the all-important home cooked meals, The Laurels is certainly worth visiting if you are thinking of the next stage in life for yourself or your loved ones. Why not contact them for further information or to arrange a viewing?

child of sussex awards

Our Amazing

CHILDREN Returning for its 8th annual awards ceremony, The More Radio, Child of Sussex Awards is again celebrating the amazing achievements of children in Sussex. Sara Whatley tells us more

W

hat is our county’s most important asset? Our children, of course! Celebrating this in a glitzy black tie awards ceremony at the Brighton Hilton Metropole on 12th October 2018, The More Radio, Child of Sussex Awards is an event not to be missed. Children are our future, after all, so let’s celebrate them! This is a really special event and is always an emotional and uplifting celebration of the brilliant children we have in Sussex. Nick Osborne, More Radio breakfast presenter says, “This is the eighth year that we have held the awards, they are full of amazing and inspirational stories. Please help us to find this year’s winners by making a nomination today.” And it couldn’t be easier to do just that. If you think you have an amazing child, or know of a child who deserves to be recognised for something amazing they have done, all you have to do is visit www.childofsussex.co.uk and nominate them. The closing date for nominations is Friday 3rd August 2018. Kieran Davenport won the Courage Award in 2017. In chronic pain all day

and all night, Kieran’s joints dislocate or sublux all the time, with his record being 70 dislocations in 24 hours. At one point he was in such pain that showering took three days to recover from. However, Kieran didn’t let this hold him back. He persevered and

worked his way through it, managing against all odds to gain two A grades and a C in his GCSEs, keeping his incredible sense of humour and fun and even managing to be kind, caring and supportive to all his friends, some of whom are severely disabled. Kieran was attending 6th Form College, but due to his health problems he is now doing his A levels online. Another winner from the 2017 awards was Jessica Batchelor for the Community Award. Jessica witnessed the death of a friend’s mother at a netball match, who could potentially have been helped by a defibrillator. Since then Jessica has ceaselessly been campaigning for more public access defibrillators. As the Young Mayor for Seaford, Jessica was in a position to give speeches and approach local businesses to help raise money. She also used the UK Youth Parliament to spread the message to places further afield, as she

If you think you have an amazing child all you have to do to is visit www.childofsussex.co.uk and nominate them felt the cause was too important to just be kept local. The final piece of Jessica’s campaign fell into place following work experience with her local MP where Jessica wrote her own Bill – to get legislation that defibrillators have to be in schools, sports centres and other public places – which was accepted with no opposition in Parliament. These are just two out of the hundreds of incredible achievements made by the children of Sussex every year. The 2018 event looks set to be equally as wonderful, all that’s needed is your nominations. Sussex Living is proudly supporting the awards as a media partner, and we wish all the entries the best of luck. l

BEAUTY

Cool

SUMMER

Having fun in the sun is great, and what holidays are made of, but to help keep you cool, comfortable and healthy in the heat, Amy Newson is here to give you some tips and tricks

A

s temperatures rise with summer finally heating up, make sure you know how to keep cool and safe in the sun. It isn’t just about comfort – dangerously high temperatures can result in heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Follow these easy tips to make the most of the hot summer days ahead: Wear lightweight, light-coloured cotton or linen clothes. Heat is trapped by synthetic material, but cotton absorbs perspiration and its evaporation helps you feel cooler. The light colour reflects the heat and sunlight better than anything dark. Shorts and skirts paired with tops made of loose, airy material increase ventilation and help regulate your body temperature. Don’t forget to use sun cream on any exposed skin, with a minimum 15 SPF to avoid sunburn, which can lead to quicker aging of the skin and serious skin health problems. Flipflops and sandals allow the feet to breathe; there’s nothing worse on a hot day than wearing

closed shoes with no air circulation. Too much makeup can prevent sweating, making you feel hotter. Try to loosely brush on some matt powder for oil control during the day and for the evening, when it starts to cool down, a light foundation is good for better coverage. Tying up your long hair and keeping it off your face and neck is a wise choice in scorching temperatures. Run your wrists under a cold tap for 30 seconds each, every couple of

hours. Major veins pass through this area, so it helps to cool the blood. Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the fridge for a quick, refreshing spray of cool water after being outdoors. Try taking tepid baths or showers just below body temperature, especially before going to bed. Cold showers may seem more tempting, but your body will generate heat afterwards to compensate for the heat loss. Drink plenty of water! Keep plastic bottles of water in the freezer: the ice will melt in the heat leaving you with amazing icy cold water to sip on the go. As an alternative, try drinking chrysanthemum tea, which is said to be a cooling herbal remedy, but do check you are safe to drink it before consuming. Avoid drinking alcohol and caffeine as these are dehydrating. Eat small meals and more often! A larger meal increases the metabolic heat your body creates to break down the food. Try eating salads, raw food and fresh fruit and vegetables to avoid cooking – standing over the stove isn’t what you want on a hot day! Enjoy the sun and remember the hottest part of the day is between 11am and 3pm, so when out and about avoid the direct sun as much as you can and stay cool and beautiful in the shade. l

FOOD & DRINK

Summer Party Go all out and impress your friends and family with Gillian Reay-Young’s classic Spanish dish to share, topped off with a frozen fruity dessert, and wait for the compliments to pour in

PARTY PAELLA

Ingredients 8 mussels 100g peeled prawns A small cooked lobster 600g diced chicken breasts (pork, or a mixture of pork and chicken works well too) 4 tbsp olive oil 2 cloves of garlic, chopped 1 onion, chopped 1 red or green pepper, chopped and seeded 4 tomatoes, peeled and chopped 350g long grain rice 1.3l chicken stock 100g peas (frozen are fine) A little saffron and seasoning

1 Shell most of the mussels and peel most of the prawns (if using fresh), leaving a few for decoration later. 2 Remove the cooked lobster meat from the shell and dice, keeping the claws for decoration later 3 Put the oil in a large paella dish or frying pan and sauté the garlic, onion and pepper for 5 minutes until soft but not browned. 4 Add the chopped tomatoes and the diced meat and lightly brown the meat. 5 Stir in the rice and most of the stock, leaving a little to blend the saffron powder before adding to the mixture. Season to your taste (if you use stock cubes, then a

little salt will be needed) 6 Bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce and simmer for approx. 20 minutes, until the rice is just cooked and the meat tender. 7 Stir in the mussels, peeled prawns, lobster meat and peas and simmer for a further 8-10 minutes.

8 Serve the paella with a few strips of raw red/green pepper and the lobster claw, and scatter a few whole cooked prawns and cooked mussels in their shells over the top. 9 Serve inside or alfresco, with a mixed salad and perhaps some garlic bread.

RED WINE & RASPBERRY SORBET Ingredients 200g sugar 200g raspberries 200ml red wine 150ml water 1 Pour the water and wine into a saucepan and add the sugar. 2 Bring to the boil for one minute, then take off the heat and add the raspberries. Fresh ones are nicest but you can use frozen raspberries when they’re out of season.

3 Leave for one hour, then sieve to remove the raspberry seeds. 4 Put the mixture into a freezer container and pop into the freezer. 5 When frozen, take out of the container and beat the mixture until it goes creamy in texture, then return to the freezer until you’re ready to serve. 6 Serve in a glass Please note: This is a dessert for adults.

EVENTS

THE MONTH OF JULY

J

uly was named in honour of Julius Caesar after his death in 44 BC, this being the month of his birth. Before it was renamed, the month was known as Quintilis (borrowed into English as Quintile), which means ‘fifth’. July was originally the fifth month in the ancient Roman ten-month calendar. July (or certainly part of it) is the traditional period known as ‘fence month’, the closed season for deer in England. Closed seasons for deer vary by species. This practice dates back to medieval times, and commonly lasted from June 9 to July 9, though the actual dates varied.

Facts and Figures

In the Kitchen Fruits burst into our homes this month: apricots, peaches, cherries and blueberries as well as raspberries and strawberries which are still in season and the garden veg is bounteous. Sea Bass and crab are also plentiful. If you’ve planted courgettes, you should have a glut of them this month! Their flowers are edible delicacies, with a sweet crunch to them, and pick tiny

courgettes which also have a sweeter flavour. They can be eaten raw or lightly fried in butter – or how about trying courgette fritters? Grate a couple into a tea towel and squeeze out the moisture. Put into a bowl and mix with half a packet of feta, a beaten egg and two tablespoons of plain flour, then fry spoonfuls of the mixture in hot oil.

In the Garden Water your plants at dusk, when water droplets on the foliage are less likely to cause damage by heating the leaves. If you’re using terracotta pots, they’re prone to evaporation so dampen the pot too, to keep the plant roots cool and damp. To encourage new flowers in the hanging baskets, keep dead heading and be sure to feed well after doing so. Now’s the time to sow the late summer vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, rocket and spring onions, and autumn vegetables including cabbage, winter carrots

The length of the day this month, decreases by 1 hour and 6 minutes (London) although the sea temperature continues to rise to 15.4°. A full lunar eclipse, more common than the solar eclipse, happens this month on the night of the 27th. Only one in three lunar eclipses are a full eclipse. They’re also sometimes known as a ‘blood moon’ due to the shades of red and orange. Julys birthstone, the Ruby, is considered the king of gems and represents love, health and wisdom. It’s one of the most valuable gemstones and its value increases based on its colour and quality. The Delphinium (or Larkspur) is the birth flower of July; with its simple form, feelings of open heart and ardent attachment are attributed to it. The Zodiac signs for July are Cancer and Leo. Famous birthdays include Ringo Starr (7th), Patrick Stewart (13th), Helen Mirren (26th), Tom Hanks (9th), Benedict Cumberbatch (19th) to name a few! Happy ‘World Chocolate Day’ on the 7th!

and turnips. Houseplants can be moved outdoors this month for the summer. Give the leaves a dust and a shower, and the roots a feed and a good soaking, and it’ll really cheer them up!

MONEY MATTERS

KNOW YOUR From CIS to selling your company or business property, Melanie Richards guides us through the tricky world of tax TAX ENQUIRIES AND CIS We have noticed an increase in the number of ‘compliance reviews’ carried out by HMRC recently, particularly focussing on the operation of the Construction Industry Scheme. Clients are facing a visit from HMRC inspectors who then ask for reams of information that takes days and weeks to collate. HMRC is then taking weeks to respond to the information, making the whole process stressful to the business owner, who despite having operated the CIS system to the best of their ability, is worrying that they have made an expensive mistake. The CIS system is so complicated that it is virtually impossible to get every single bit right, especially if you are running a business employing subcontractors. HMRC are then raising letters informing the client that they have to pay tax because they haven’t operated the system correctly. What the client isn’t told is that often the contractor at the other end of the transaction has already paid over tax which is then doubled up. You can ask HMRC to net the two amounts off, but unless you ask it won’t happen, leaving you out of pocket. It’s always good advice to ask an accountant to help you deal with tax visits or enquiries. SELLING YOUR BUSINESS Lots of people are selling (or buying) businesses at the moment. It’s great to see business owners finally getting some reward for all of their hard work over the years. Structuring the sale of a business is key to ensuring that you pay as little tax as possible once you have the money in your bank account. If you are running a business as a sole trader or partnership, then you will be selling your goodwill and customer book

usually. If you are selling a limited company though, you would expect to sell the shares in your company. There are times when this isn’t the best plan. Say for example that you had a bit of a worry over the employment status of a subcontractor. He or she has been with you a few years and while you are confident that they are definitely a subbie, the purchaser of your business is a bit wary of taking over the company because of it. One way they will deal with this is to ask you to indemnify them against any future tax liabilities relating to that subcontractor. This could mean you having to pay up a large sum of money, years later, because the purchaser didn’t bother to argue the case properly, knowing you were sitting in the wings. It might be sensible in that circumstance, for the company to sell the trade and assets to the purchaser, and for you as the company owner to retain your shares. You can then get the company liquidated following the sale, assuming that the liquidator also agrees with your position. SELLING PROPERTY Conversely sometimes, selling a property (usually commercial property) wrapped up in a company can be a benefit. Stamp duty on the sale of shares is half a percent, while Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) can be considerably more. Buyers are then likely to be happier to increase their offer a little, knowing that there is an SDLT saving. Sometimes however, it can be a disadvantage having a property in a company, particularly if the company has owned the property for a long time. Until recently, a company didn’t have to show the tax effect of selling the property in its accounts. This meant that if the company had owned the property for a while and then sold it, the profit it made was substantially reduced by the tax due on the profit. Buying a company which owns a property without doing sufficient research into the date it was purchased and the records that have been kept since can be a really expensive mistake if you later sell the property out of the company. In summary, it really pays to stop and ask some questions, before you sign on the dotted line. Even just a quick chat over the phone with your accountant can help you avoid a costly error. l
