CAMPING

CARRY ON…

Camping! N

othing beats relaxing around the campfire, sleeping out under the stars and waking up to birdsong, so it’s no surprise to learn that over 15 million camping and caravanning trips were made in the UK last year (Mintel). Whether it’s the sense of freedom and adventure or the chance to unplug from the digital world and embrace the countryside, there is a growing trend for this type of holiday. Camping gear has been given a stylish makeover by some top designers; retro camper vans are commanding huge prices, while popular music festivals, along with camping celebrities including Kate Moss and Sienna Miller are driving the luxury glamping end of the market. Here we’ve outlined both the information and inspiration to help you get the most out of a camping or camper van trip this summer.

It’s time to dust down the canvas, polish up the chrome and head out under the stars! Whether you like to wild camp or glamp it, read on for some camping and camper van inspiration from Lisa de Silva CAMPING Offering superb value for money, a chance to discover the great British countryside and make new friends, camping is an excellent pastime for families and couples alike. Campers can be as active or relaxed as they wish, enjoy the fun of cooking outdoors and watch the sunrise and set amid beautiful surroundings. The community spirit among fellow

campers is legendary and children love the freedom to explore and play with new pals. For those who associate a camping holiday with roughing it, think again. New products and upgraded camping sites can ensure you stay clean, comfortable and well-catered for in all weather conditions. While for some the attraction of ‘wild’ camping is to enjoy as natural experience as possible, for those looking for high-end facilities many campsites now offer deluxe shower blocks, electrical hook ups, Wi-Fi, play areas and restaurants. Think about the type of experience you’d most enjoy and research suitable sites but do book well in advance as the most popular campsites book up fast. CHOOSING A TENT Camping does not need lots of expensive equipment and a basic starter tent, sleeping bag and portable

and take proper bedding for a great night’s sleep, while solar powered fairy lights and candle-lit lanterns will add atmosphere and charm. Inside the tent a small bedside table, inflatable chairs, a solar-powered portable speaker and a large mirror will all add style and comfort. Outside, set up table and chairs, an outdoor rug and portable hammock to create that deluxe feel. Another idea is to take indulgent food and premium snacks and if you love your morning coffee, a cafetiere is definitely worth packing.

cooking stove is all you really need. When choosing a tent think about head height and the space needed for both sleeping and living. As a rule of thumb 4-berth tents work well for couples, while larger tents with separate sleeping compartments will suit families. Size does matter as the larger the tent, the heavier and more difficult it can be to erect and larger tents can incur increased pitch fees. So consider getting an extension in the form of a canopy which can double the size of a tent and create a useful shady space for cooking and relaxing. When it comes to tent shapes, there is an enormous choice including dome, tunnel, bell and tipi, while many of the largest tents have a central living area with several sleeping pods radiating off the main room. For head height, a tunnel tent offers good vertical space and for fast pitching opt for an instant pitch tent, although these are not

particularly robust and best used for festivals and children’s play tents. FROM CAMPING TO GLAMPING Once you’ve chosen a tent, it is easy to add a few indulgent extras to elevate your camping trip to more luxurious glamping. Invest in air mattresses

FOLDING CAMPERS AND TRAILER TENTS Cheaper than a camper van, but easier to tow than a caravan, folding campers and tent trailers can offer a good alternative for those looking to bridge the gap between the fun of canvas and the home comforts of a camper van. A folding camper is a trailer that offers a caravan-style layout once erected. All the accommodation is off the ground, they are quick and easy to erect and usually offer a higher standard of equipment than a trailer tent. While they are more expensive than a trailer tent, they are just as easy to tow and store when not in use. Alternatively, a trailer tent can best be described as a tent that pulls out from a trailer which is pegged into the ground around it, with the trailer forming an off the ground bedroom area. Typically, they are smaller and lighter than a folding camper. Factors to consider if you are researching either of these options are whether your car is capable of towing

Consider getting an extension in the form of a canopy which can double the size of a tent

Consider how often you will use a van; six weeks or less it’s probably more cost effective to rent one

the trailer, where you will keep it when not in use and the need for maintenance. On the plus side, neither incur an additional road tax or require a special driving license, although ferry crossings will cost more with a trailer. When buying, make a list of both essential and desirable equipment and do try pitching and taking down the unit yourself. If buying second hand, check the tyre condition, hitching apparatus, brakes, lighting and any damage to hinges, locks and bodywork. You will also need an illuminated number plate to match your registration number and to inform both your insurance company and breakdown recovery service that you will be towing a trailer. CAMPER VANS & MOTORHOMES If you enjoy the freedom of the open road and love the idea of jumping in a vehicle set up with all your home comforts for endless adventures, a camper van or motorhome could be for you. A brilliant way to stretch out your weekends and help achieve a great work/life balance, a camper van saves you time and money and can be adapted to meet your specific needs with comfortable beds, lighting, cooking and en suite facilities. Fun

to drive, they are also much easier to park than trailers and towing caravans. What’s more, you will find you develop an easy bond with other owners and become part of a community of kindred spirits keen to swap tips and advice. Before searching for a suitable vehicle to buy or convert yourself, consider how often you will use a van, as if it amounts to around six weeks a year or less, it is probably more cost effective to rent one. In terms of size the smaller the van, the easier it is to

The community spirit among fellow campers is legendary and children love the freedom to explore drive and park, not to mention cheaper fuel costs. Also consider head height. If you will be making long trips, a hightop van will feel more spacious but can cause height barrier issues in certain car parks and may mean it does not fit into your garage for safe storage. An alternative is a pop-top which is easy to put up and saves money on fuel consumption.

Other factors to consider include whether you require a toilet and shower which would necessitate a water tank and heating system; whether there is a rear rack and awning for storing bikes; whether you want pull-out or fixed beds and the type and size of the kitchen facilities. If buying second hand, do have a habitation check by an approved specialist to check the water and gas systems, pumps and filters, seals, ventilation and fire safety equipment. Expect to pay a premium for an iconic retro camper van, which not only look cool but hold their value and can even increase in value over time. It may even earn its own keep with many owners renting theirs out for weddings, films and photographic shoots. If you like the idea of a camper van but want a real home from home, a motorhome or RV will appeal. These vehicles have a separate driving cab and large self-contained living quarters offering high-spec lounge areas with TVs and sound systems, contemporarystyle kitchens and dining areas, deluxe bathrooms and modern bedrooms. Many can also tow or accommodate a small car. In fact, a well-equipped motorhome can make a practical home and on the road office for those who enjoy living life on the road. l

LOCATION

EASTBOURNE HAMLETS This month Peter d’Aguilar visits the locations of Meads Village and Old Town in Eastbourne, unearthing two leafy and historic hamlets attracting many visitors, including Tommy Cooper and Charles Dickens!

A

t the western end of the vibrant south coast town of Eastbourne lie the leafy and historic hamlets of Meads Village and Old Town. Meads extends along the coastline from Birling Gap almost as far as Eastbourne Pier and includes the famous Beachy Head cliffs. As its name suggests, Old Town is Eastbourne’s oldest village; tracing its origins back to Saxon times. Both have the gently rolling hills of the South Downs National Park on their westerly doorsteps. Back in the early 19th century, the area covered today by Meads’ shops and houses was all farmland; with just a few isolated agricultural buildings. Old Town was originally known as Bourne after the stream – or bourne – that rises in what is now Motcombe Gardens and previously provided the surrounding area with its water supply. Gradually, under the patronage of

the eminent Victorian landowner and politician William Cavendish, later the 7th Duke of Devonshire, Meads and Old Town became part of Eastbourne – which at the time was evolving into a popular Victorian seaside resort, driven by the advent of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. St Mary the Virgin in Old Town, near to the source of Bourne Stream, was the initial heart of Eastbourne. After its destruction by German bombers in World War II, construction of a striking new church was completed in 1954 on a hilltop close to Hampden Park – one of England’s few post-war buildings to receive a Grade II listing. In 1859 the Duke of Devonshire instructed his agent Henry Currey to draw up plans for the development of Eastbourne; specifically introducing substantial houses, impressive gardens and tree-lined streets onto what had previously been Meads’ fertile

agricultural land. The area soon became known as ‘the unrivalled Belgravia of a salubrious and flourishing health resort’, attracting affluent new residents from military, commercial and professional backgrounds. In 1869, the consecration of a parish church dedicated to St John the Evangelist provided for the inhabitants’ spiritual needs. In 1894 a small square of artisan dwellings was added to cater for working class occupation. Originally called Wallis’s Cottages, the square subsequently

became known as The Village – and is now a popular attraction with its colourful miniature cottage gardens, flint walls and rustic arches. All Saints Hospital, which opened in Meads in 1869 on land donated by the Duke of Devonshire, was Britain’s first purpose-built seaside convalescent sanatorium. The hospital closed in 2004 and the buildings were converted into luxury homes. The hospital’s listed chapel, which dates back to 1874, was previously a place of contemplation for patients and relatives and is now a popular venue for weddings and dinners. During the 1950s, the Reverend Hubert Brasier served as chaplain for All Saints Hospital and its chapel. His daughter, who was herself born in Eastbourne,

During World War II, business was brisk at both the surviving pubs; particularly due to the many Canadian servicemen stationed in the area. The Canadians received a warm welcome from the local community – some even returned home with brides from Meads. In May 1942 St John the Evangelist, the Upper Meads parish church, was seriously damaged in a German bombing raid; as were several houses in Meads Street in March 1943. Meads now has a population of over ten thousand. As the area has developed, the section on higher

schools sprang up in Meads during the Victorian era. Today there are four well-known independent schools in the area. St. John’s Meads, a C of E Primary School with over two hundred pupils, has been located on its present site for over a century. The Meads Community Association was set up in 1990 to preserve the unique character of the area and to resist any unsympathetic new developments. Visitors to Old Town should look out for St Mary the Virgin, Pilgrims House – possibly the oldest inhabited private residence in England and opposite it a well-known 13th century public house. “This wasn’t the perfect house when we found it; the décor hadn’t been updated since the 1980s so it was very tired, the layout didn’t flow and the space was too small but I could see just how lovely it could be, and the location was perfect,” says Sue Marino. At the time the couple were living in a nearby village. “We were keen to start a family and were looking for a home we could grow into,” she says. Then two things happened which had a big impact on the Marinos. Interest rates rocketed and Sue’s mother died. “On one hand my father was struggling with living on his own rattling around in a house which was larger than he needed, and on the other our potential sum to buy had shrunk.”

LESSONS LEARNED

“Our renovations went surprisingly smoothly because we were constantly on hand to make decisions and changes as they were called for. We soon realised it was helpful to do our homework and prepare every night for what needed doing the following day, even drawing up plans for where lights should be placed. This gave the builders a clear direction for tasks to be done on a daily basis.

CONSERVATORY

Upcycled furniture and Sue’s collection of pretty china make this a great spot for summer meals

“We soon discovered that building dust gets into everything even though everything was triple sealed. We had to wash the contents of our airing cupboard at least three times despite our best efforts to keep the dust out! If we were to undergo such extensive renovations again while living on-site we would hire a storage container to protect our possessions.”

After several discussions Sue and her father decided it would be a good idea to sell their respective homes, pool their resources and buy something that could be developed to suit everyone’s needs. It was the perfect solution; first priority was to build an extension to accommodate Sue’s father. “We took one third of the existing house and extended it to create a self-contained home with its own entrance, spacious sitting room and kitchen on the ground floor with two bedrooms and bathroom above.” The project was completed in 1996 with Nick undertaking much of the work himself. “Once we knew my dad was comfortable we could proceed with our

own part of the house,” says Sue. By then the couple’s daughter had been born and they realised they needed more living space, as apart from a small drawing room they had nowhere to really sit and relax as a family. “We were looking for a quick solution and hit upon the idea of a conservatory,” says Sue. “I wanted more of a garden room so we hunted on the internet until we found a conservatory that was in our price range which could adapt to the style of room I wanted.” The couple did most of the work themselves with Nick working in the evenings and at weekends to complete the project. “We were fortunate that we found the only Edwardian style kit on the market which we could adapt, the company were very flexible and even made adhesive wood frames to suit the Gothic style I wanted.” Fifteen years later Sue’s father suffered a stroke and became less mobile so the family built garages with a

DECORATING TIP

“Every room needs a focal point: we like to include several points of interest in a room, almost as if you were composing little individual scenes around the room. For instance, an empty corner will benefit from a pretty chair and cushion. These smaller more intimate snapshots keep a room, or indeed a garden, appealing wherever you look.”

self-contained living space for him on one level. They were then ready for the next renovation project: this time they planned to reconfigure the layout. Work included repositioning the front door giving the house a proper entrance hallway and moving walls so that rooms flowed into each other. Extending the house into Sue’s father’s area gave the couple a light, spacious drawing room with double doors opening onto the hallway. The original kitchen became a study, conveniently tucked behind the drawing room. Along with new wiring, windows and central heating the Marinos extended the house sideways, doubling the size. Replacing an exterior wall with ceiling to floor glass doors transformed the

BEST BUY STAIRCASE

“I wanted to create maximum impact in the entrance hall so we asked a local craftsmen to design a bespoke stairway and added the round table in black”

“The round black table in the hallway was definitely our best purchase. We were browsing in a local antique shop when we glimpsed the edge of the table buried under some chairs, we asked the proprietor to pull it out for us and knew immediately it was perfect. We assumed it would be very expensive but it turned out to be incredibly reasonable and looks fabulous in its new home.”

layout of the new kitchen-cum-family living area creating a more relaxed open-plan style of living. “It was very exciting,” says Sue. “I had always dreamed of a painted shaker kitchen so most of the budget went on bespoke solid wood cabinetry, but we saved money by shopping around massively for light fittings, building materials and appliances.” When it came to the décor, Sue and son Marco shared the decision making. “Marco has a great eye for colour and we share similar tastes opting for pared down simplicity in soft shades of grey with white.” When furnishing most of the rooms Sue worked around pieces she had collected over the years, but the kitchen family area was a blank canvas. “We started

avina has long been a supporter of charity. You’ll probably know her work with Sport Relief; the fighting spirit she showed during ‘Davina – Beyond the Breaking Point’ in 2014 still resonates with many as the then 46-year-old spent a week running, swimming and cycling across the UK. Perhaps less well-known is her longrunning support for children’s charity Action Medical Research which is based in Horsham, West Sussex. The UK-wide organisation raises funds for medical research into a wide variety of illnesses and conditions that affect babies and children. Founded in 1952, it has played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs, starting with the development of the first polio vaccines in the UK, later helping to develop the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and the rubella vaccine. More recently, Action launched its ‘BORN TOO SOON’ campaign which shines a spotlight on premature birth; the devastation caused by premature birth and the complications that can follow and for which Davina is a proud ambassador. Established in London, the charity moved its headquarters from Vincent Square to West Sussex in 1972 and has held a number of local events over the years including the ‘Trek The Night: South Downs Way’ fundraiser which saw supporters hiking their way from Devil’s Dyke to Beachy Head. “Action is an absolutely amazing charity,” confides the TV star. “I’ve been supporting them ever since my dear Pippy introduced me to them

Big Sussex Bike Ride has been running for nine years and has so far raised around £320,000 when I was just a little girl.” Jean ‘Pippy’ McCall - who sadly passed away in June 2018 aged 98 – was a chairwoman of a local committee for Action Medical Research in the 1960s. Davina would have been nine years old when she was brought along to her

first fundraising event for the charity. Knowing her granddaughter’s fame would help raise the charity’s profile, Davina was brought back into the fold by Pippy again in 2001. “As a mum myself it’s a cause very dear to my heart and I’m so proud to host two annual events here in the south which help raise lots of money for vital research.” ‘Dine with Davina’ is a ladies’ lunch which has been held in Southampton since 2007. Hundreds of guests are given the opportunity to meet Davina before she regales them with anecdotes from the past year. With live music and an auction hosted by Bargain Hunt’s John Cameron, there’s plenty of fun to be had. This year’s event is being held at St Mary’s stadium on Friday 7 November. Closer to home, ‘Davina’s Big Sussex Bike Ride’ returns every June (this year’s event is on Sunday 16th). The fundraiser has been running for nine years and has so far raised around £320,000. There are three circular routes to choose from which all start and finish near Uckfield in East Sussex. They take in a number of picturesque towns and villages including Golden Cross, Horam, Battle and Laughton. Davina says there’s always a really fun atmosphere: “It’s a very inclusive bike ride with people of all ages and abilities taking part. If you’re new to cycling, there’s the 21 mile route. Then there’s either the 40 or 68 mile ones to choose from. “I just love the fact that it’s a fun fundraiser for all the family. It’s a chance to get out in the beautiful Sussex countryside, do something active and help raise money for Action.” Davina is no stranger to fitness of course, having presented a number of hugely successful workout DVDs over the last couple of decades. Since having her three children (Holly, Tilly and Chester) it’s an area of her life which she enjoys focusing on. Later this year she hopes to complete her qualifications to become a personal trainer. “For me it’s so much more about my own personal health rather than a vanity project. I’m at the stage of my life where I’m thinking about things like heart disease, cholesterol, blood pressure… I enjoy keeping active but I enjoy the benefits more and that’s why it’s fab to host an event like the Big Sussex Bike Ride for Action.” l

Davina’s Big Sussex Bike Ride will be held on Sunday 16 June 2019. Riders will be able to register online until midnight on Wednesday 12 June. There will also be the opportunity to register on the day. Find out more action.org.uk/events/ cycling/davina-ride-100 44 SUSSEX LIVING | June 2019

PETS

It’s a Dog’s Life Teddy is having some deep thoughts for a Border Terrier this month as he ponders the meaning of doggy sayings, writes Helen Stockton, the pen behind the paw

T

he other day I was lying in the sunlight, reflecting on the meaning of life, when it struck me how many expressions there are in the English language that include dogs. This is obviously because we are so important. For example, there’s ‘give a dog a bad name….’. Now this could be a reference to the unfortunate business of saddling some poor pooch with an ill-considered epithet such as ‘TiddlyPom’ or ‘Fluffy-Wuffy’, but even if owners are suitably restrained in the naming department, there’s always the additional worry, for pedigree dogs, of kennel names. Mine isn’t too bad; it’s ‘My Teddy Edwards’ which I think has a certain ring to it. It’s sometimes

abbreviated to ‘Teddy Eddie’ by ‘Her Indoors’ which is also pleasingly affectionate. However, you don’t have to look far through my pedigree to find names of dubious merit. I’m not sure ‘Plushcourt Gasp’ was a very healthy dog or that ‘Brumberhill Be Solo’ was

‘Her Indoors’ sometimes impersonates my barking and growling, usually when playing a vigorous game of tug o’ war

My Teddy Edwards

48 SUSSEX LIVING | June 2019

very sociable, and perhaps we ought to draw a veil over the moral integrity of a female relative called ‘Party Game Girl’. However, my Grandfather’s name of ‘Bob Bob Bobbin’ fits neatly with the official name of Rolo, my recently departed boss and mentor. His was ‘Janlane Red Robbin’. And I really can’t complain about having a mother called ‘Always Dotty’ – perfect! Still, I don’t think the expression, ‘give a dog a bad name..’ is actually a reflection of the quality of their title, but more a comment on the burden imposed by the loss of good reputation. This never troubled the Boss who relished his near mythical status as one of the world’s most naughty canines, and went to some trouble, on a regular basis, to maintain it. Then there are expressions such as ‘why keep a dog and bark yourself’ which comments on our domestic usefulness. ‘Her Indoors’ sometimes impersonates my barking and growling, usually when playing a vigorous game of tug o’ war. She’s no idea what she’s saying, bless her, and I can only think the Boss must have taught her some of that language as it certainly didn’t come from me, but she clearly doesn’t adhere to that particular expression. There are others that are pleasing such as ‘like a dog with two tails’. This isn’t a comment on some bizarre mutation, but more a suggestion of such an ecstasy of wagging that one tail blurs into many. I am certainly capable of this when ‘Her Indoors’ has the cheek to leave me, and then, just as I’ve given up hope and considered myself duly abandoned, returns. There are other expressions, with less fortunate associations, involving dogs, for example, ‘he’s gone to see a man about a dog’. Why bring us into the unsavoury business? However, there are some that demonstrate our equality too, so, if you’ll forgive me, I’m going back to where I started, abandoning my typing duties and lying in the sun, because, as it is well known, ‘only mad dogs and Englishmen…’ That’s okay then! l

BLOOMING TIMES

Rooted Gardening makeovers are nothing new. Topiary, hot tubs and patios were all the rage during the Roman Empire, says Flo Whitaker

IN THE PAST

I

f your neighbours drove you nuts over the bank holiday weekend as they enthusiastically set about their latest DIY garden project, remember – it could have been worse. In a previous incarnation, you might have suffered from even noisier neighbours because the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Persians and Romans were devotees of horticultural bling and were always getting the builders in. Fancy a mirrored pool with a fountain and gilded statures? No problem. Pergola? Easy-peasy. Hot tub? All the rage. Patio lighting? Yep. Blue-painted decking? Ok … so I made up the last bit - we probably have Mr Titchmarsh to thank for that one, but you get the idea. Horticulture was big business in the ancient world. A sunny weekend visit to a garden centre will confirm that precious little has changed. ‘Topiary’ comes from the Latin, ‘topia’, meaning an ornamental garden.

The topia was the domain of the ‘topiarius’, someone we would nowadays refer to as the Head Gardener; a skilled artisan who was also schooled in design and construction methods and could advise the garden owner on topics such as landscaping and decorative features. If a client’s

Horticulture was big business in the ancient world. A sunny weekend visit to a garden centre will confirm that precious little has changed garden required extensive remodelling, the topiarius took on the role of project manager; directing a team of labourers and under-gardeners. And you thought that garden makeovers were a new idea? Topiary, (literally!) grew from the evolution of the hedge. The first manmade hedges in Europe probably date from the Neolithic age. Over time, their

50 SUSSEX LIVING | June 2019

function subtly changed. No longer just a simple agricultural stockade, a well-maintained hedge became an indication of wealth and social rank; defining territory and showing that the landowner could afford to employ others to keep his estate in order. The first high-density human settlements were created by old-world empires, long before the birth of Christ. Those new city-dwellers put great value on private outdoor spaces. They were places to relax and entertain, away from the hurly-burly of the bustling streets and markets. Garden styles that are so familiar to us today originated in those ancient worlds. Cloister gardens, secret gardens, parterres, knot gardens, water features, mazes and herb gardens are rooted in ancient Greek, Roman, Islamic, Egyptian and Indian cultures. Throughout the Middle Ages, Italy and France were considered to be world centres of horticultural excellence. International trade bought exciting new plants to European shores and the Medici’s, (the ASBO family from hell – imagine living next door to that lot!) were gardening obsessives; constructing ever-more lavish gardens that featured thousands of topiary specimens. The two great stalwart topiary plants are box, (Buxus) and yew,

(Taxus). Their densely-packed foliage allows for intricate designs that will retain crisp outlines throughout winter. Privet, (Ligustrum) and the micro-leaved evergreen honeysuckle, (Lonicera nitida) are also good choices and are resistant to box blight disease. Bay, (Laurus) holly, (Ilex) and hornbeam, (Carpinus) are excellent for topiary work, although they cannot be clipped so closely. Spheres and

Give topiary an annual feed with slow-release fertiliser in spring simple geometric shapes are easiest to maintain and can be cut ‘by eye’. For more complicated shapes, wirework frames, designed to be permanently fixed over plant(s) can be purchased. The plant is allowed to grow until the frame is completely obscured, then clipped regularly to keep its shape. If starting from scratch seems daunting, ready-made topiary specimens are widely available. Don’t

scream at the prices; remember, someone has spent years doing all the work for you. The Victorians and Edwardians adored topiary and the gloriously-named London nurseryman, Mr Herbert Cutbush, was renowned for his potted topiary specimens. A pioneer of ‘grab it and go’ shopping, Herbert’s customers could select a plant and take it home straight away. This was

a revolutionary notion at a time when plants were grown in open ground in fields. Customers had to potentially wait for months until the correct time for the lifting and transplanting of their purchases. Hedges and topiary require a little care to keep them growing happily. Containerised topiary is especially prone to drought or lack of nutrients

and can also suffer from wind-rock, so think carefully about the type of container you use. A large lollipopheaded specimen will probably need a half barrel to keep it upright and stable. Give topiary an annual feed with slowrelease fertiliser in spring. A mulch of leaf mould, old potting soil or chipped bark will help retain moisture during the summer months. Containerised topiary may need watering every day in really hot weather and newly-planted hedges can suffer. If you planted a run of hedging this spring, consider purchasing a seep hose – a relatively inexpensive bit of kit that uses water efficiently, dripping it gently to the roots where it will do most good. Trimming and pruning of topiary is best done in May/June. A dry, overcast day puts less stress on the plants, and you; it can be hot, dusty work. Whatever you use; electric trimmers, shears or specialist topiary

tools, ensure the cutting blades are sharp. You want ‘clean’ cuts, not jagged ones where infection may take hold. Scrub the blades with hot soapy water before and after use, especially if you’ve previously loaned cutting tools to someone else. Disease pathogens quickly spread from plant to plant via

infected sap; basic hygiene is a sensible precaution. Another ‘tidy-up’ trim in early autumn may be required, but only do this in mild conditions, as frosty air will disfigure soft, recently-cut foliage, something those perfectionist, blingtastic Medici’s would simply not have tolerated. l

CENTENARIANS

THE SECRET TO In 1985 just 0.006% of the UK population lived to 100 years of age. By 2015 that figure had risen to 0.2% – that’s over 14,500 people. Lisa de Silva and Robert Veitch recently met four local centenarians

DAME VERA LYNN Born in East Ham, London in 1917, forces’ sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn celebrated her 102nd birthday in March. Famous for giving outdoor concerts to the troops during the Second World War singing songs that included, We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover, she has enjoyed a long and illustrious musical career. In 2009, aged 92 years Dame Vera become the oldest living artist to reach the top of the UK Albums Chart. She released an album in her centennial year that

longevity

reached number three, making her the first centenarian to have a chart album. Dame Vera has lived in Ditchling since the 1960s. She is still held in much affection by the war veterans she sang for and remains involved in her extensive charity work. In 2001, she established the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity in Cuckfield to support under 5s with motor learning impairments, including cerebral palsy and at 102 years old remains a passionate President. I asked for her advice on leading a long and happy life: “I have said it many times before, but ‘keep smiling through’.

Whatever life brings, it is so important to remain positive and persevere no matter what. It was that fighting spirit that got us through the War, and I think it applies to everyday life just as much.” As a young woman Dame Vera relished the opportunity to travel to war zones to entertain the troops. “Our brave boys were out there fighting for our freedom and going to entertain them and bring a piece of home to the front line was really the least that I could do.” Even today she receives letters from some of the veterans she sang to and is always thrilled to hear their news.

Over her 102-year lifespan Dame Vera has seen many changes and while she acknowledges the benefits of modern technology, she feels many people have lost sight of the simple pleasures in life, such as spending time in the community. It was the desire to live within a closeknit community that prompted her move to Ditchling, “I was attracted by the small village life. There is a real sense of community spirit and camaraderie.” While her performing days are over, singing along to music is still a source of great joy. Her top tips for maintaining a positive outlook? “I think it’s always important to count your blessings, and I am always mindful that I have a lot to be grateful for. I also enjoy looking out at the nature in my garden and reading a good book.” SYLVIA MITCHELL-CORDELL Born in May 1914 just before the start of the First World War, Sylvia Mitchell-Cordell has just celebrated her 105th birthday. Remarkably she lived independently in Haywards Heath until last January, when she moved to a care home in the same town. On first meeting Sylvia and her son Jerry, I was immediately struck by her delightful spirit and charm. “I’m mostly happy. I like seeing people enjoying themselves and I very much love the garden,” she tells me.

exercises every morning. That was a good thing,” she laughs. Family, community and taking pleasure in nature, hobbies and the simple life has clearly helped Sylvia to reach such an impressive age and long may it continue.

Sylvia grew up in East London with four sisters. The family shared holidays and Sunday lunches with extended family who all lived nearby and perhaps it was this sense of community that laid the foundations for Sylvia’s long and happy life. “We had such good parents that looked after us,” she smiles. Married life saw a move down to Brighton where Sylvia and husband Ron brought up their two children. Son Jerry believes her longevity has been helped by leading a simple stress-free life. “She was a stay at home mum who didn’t drive and loved dress-making, knitting and nature, particularly feeding the birds,” he explains. Sylvia, or Ginge as she was known on account of her auburn hair, also kept herself in shape and could still touch her toes in her 90s, “I did my

After the war he went back with friends to set up a transport company. They converted a landing craft and set out across the Mediterranean. In the Bay of Biscay they hit a storm, their boat started taking on water, broke up and sank. A ship came to their rescue but sadly some friends drowned. Robbie returned to England and worked at Blackbushe Airport, where he met his wife Rosemary. He remained in the airline industry until retirement. The family settled in Sandhurst, Berkshire and his children are regular visitors to his care home. When asked the secret to a long and happy life, Robbie’s humour shines through when he tells me it’s all down to “lots of travel, good food, and red wine!”

HERTA STANTON 102-year old Herta Stanton greeted me with a smile when I met her at her care home in Crowborough. “I was born in 1917, in Vienna, into a Jewish family with two brothers and a sister,” she tells me. It was a normal family life, until the Anschluss in March 1938, and Kristallnacht in November 1938. Herta escaped on the first Kindertransport train from Vienna on 10th December 1938. “My suitcase contained all my worldly goods. I wore a straw hat with a velvet ribbon. I fled Hitler,” she recalled with a stoic firmness in her voice reliving the pain of separation. “I travelled to Crawley and became an au pair, but I didn’t like it. I learnt English in four months, then left. I moved to Pembroke Crescent in Hove.” “I met my Chessi at a dance in Croydon, he was a humble Polish soldier. Chessi had escaped three times from a Dutch POW camp, eventually arriving in England. He joined the British 8th Army, and fought at Monte Cassino.” Post War, Chessi anglicised his surname, and the newlyweds settled in Croydon. “I taught dressmaking and German. We had a son, Martin.” “I returned to Vienna in 1964.” Ironically it was by train. “It really was quite something to go back. I’ve been

back several times since. I was invited to the Kindertransport 60th anniversary celebration at Clarence House and met Prince Charles and Camilla.”

People, who forget history, tend to repeat it “We were married for 64 years, until Chessi died in 2012. I live in Crowborough now. My carers do a very special job, talking, singing, listening and helping.” “I like talking to people, that’s my secret to a long life. Its nice to be important, but it’s important to be nice.” And most prophetically, “People, who forget history, tend to repeat it.”l

COMMUNITY highlight the importance of carers, raise awareness of the challenges they face and recognise the huge contribution they make to individuals, families and communities throughout the UK. This year the emphasis of Carers Week is getting carers connected with their community. Although it can be highly rewarding caring can be hard, and often carers own health falls by the wayside. But, get connected to support, advice, other carers, services, friends and family, and technology and it’s the first step to overcoming this. Visit www.carersweek.org to find out more.

LONELINESS AWARENESS WEEK 17-21st JUNE Only three years ago the Marmalade Trust started this national campaign to raise awareness of loneliness amongst everyone in the UK, and already in 2018 they supported over 250 events. This year’s theme is #LetsTalkLoneliness, and is about trying to reduce the stigma around the loneliness conversation and make it OK to speak about it openly and normally. Loneliness will affect most people at some point in their lives and can touch anyone from young school children, to new parents, and the elderly. Help beat loneliness by getting involved with this year’s campaign and build some new friendships in your community. Find out more by visiting marmaladetrust.org

CHILDREN’S HOSPICE WEEK 17-23rd JUNE Supporting the 49,000 children in the UK living with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, and their families, Children’s Hospice Week is this year focusing on ‘Moments that matter’. This theme shines a light on significant moments and memories in a family’s life and the services that can help them get there. It might be a first family swim in a specially designed pool or an outing to see some animals – whatever the moment or memory it can be shared to help raise awareness for this campaign, and in turn help support the 54 children’s hospice services in the UK. SHINEWATER COURT CELEBRATES ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY

After decades in the town, the Hastings, St. Leonard’s and Bexhill branch of the Workers Educational Association is still going strong. The new season offers courses as diverse as macramé and politics and current affairs. The watercolour class based in Little Common is always popular, as is the Literature group which meets fortnightly in Hastings. They also offer an art history course based in the newly re-named Hastings Contemporary Gallery, formerly the Jerwood. As a registered charity the WEA is able to offer free courses to anyone in receipt of a means tested benefit, with some classes working in

partnership with community projects in the town. Visit them at their free Centenary celebrations on Friday 12th July and celebrate their contribution to wellbeing and education over 100 years, at the White Rock Hotel. A day of demo’s and exhibits of student’s creative work. Meet students and tutors who can invite you to explore the new booklet showing courses and David Alfred will also be giving a talk at 12 midday on social change and education. SUPPORTING CARERS ALL YEAR ROUND Carers Week happens every year in June and serves to raise awareness of the many issues faced by unpaid carers, and what communities can do to support them. But support is needed all year round. The figures are startling. In the UK, one in eight adults is caring for a lovedone, which totals around 6.5 million people. There are estimations that by 2037, the number of unpaid carers in the UK will increase to around 9 million. There is an ever-increasing financial strain on Adult Social Care funding, with demand rising for services coupled with reductions in funds towards these services. The work of charities is more crucial than ever. The Association of Carers provides year-round, free, volunteer led services to unpaid carers throughout East Sussex. This includes providing regular breaks from their caring role; supportive telephone calls; help with learning how to use IT equipment in their own home; help identifying care homes; help attending medical appointments; driving services; carer lunches and more. To receive support from the Association of Carers, or to volunteer to help them, please call 01424 722309 visit www.associationofcarers.org.uk or email info@associationofcarers.org.uk

The Life Changing Impact of Arthritis Arthritis affects one in six people in the UK, and can impact people at any age. In fact, around 15,000 children and young people in the UK have arthritis. Think of the people in your life: mum, dad, friends and colleagues… how many do you think have arthritis? How many talk about it? It’s the pain in the knees as you walk down the stairs, or in your fingers as you try and hold a spoon to stir your tea. You can ignore it to a point as it’s within your pain threshold, but there comes a point when it starts to affect your daily life. You no longer take the stairs but the lift… and the pain gets progressively worse. What do you do then?

later, we are continuing our tradition of helping people with arthritis enjoy a more active life with less pain. We are the only UK charity that gives hands-on, practical help: we offer healthy eating and nutritional advice; access to clinical appointments with our network of osteopaths, physiotherapists, and acupuncturists; exercise tips; and pain management techniques. Although over 10 million people have arthritis in the UK, we know that everyone is unique in the way they manage their symptoms. This is why we tailor our self-management approach to meet individual needs.

A Holistic Approach to Dealing with Arthritis

The legacy our supporters choose to give is one of hope. One of empowerment, knowledge and choice – to try new things that might be out of their comfort zone and to make the most of the time they have, despite the pain. Denise Gilden, arthritis patient and member of Arthritis Action, says: “There isn’t a magic wand to cure arthritis, so it is so important to have a positive

Traditional treatment extends to painkillers that deal with the effects, but they don’t address the causes. Arthritis Action (formerly the Arthritic Association) was founded in 1942 by Charles de Coti-Marsh, who developed a self-help programme based on a combination of diet and therapy. Now, nearly 80 years

determined mind set in making your life as active and as interesting as possible, however hard this may be. It is very comforting to know Arthritis Action are there to help and advise when you need it. Their support is what’s needed to keep your body and mind stimulated as much as possible.”

The Importance of Gifts in Wills It’s difficult to see loved ones in pain, going about their everyday lives, knowing that you may well face the same future. The gifts in Wills we receive allow us to give people the tools to manage their arthritis and lead positive lives. That is our tradition and hope for the future.

Chaseley Made a Difference to Jason’s Life

Seafaring runs in Jason Osborne’s blood. He joined the Royal Navy and was promoted to the rank of petty officer. He served his country and at the age of 27 saw action in the First Gulf War in 1990-1991. Despite putting his life on the line on a regular basis during the war, he came out unscathed. It was 10 years later, while being driven in a car, that fate was to deal him a terrible blow. The car skidded on ice and crashed. Jason sustained a severe brain injury, which left him with multiple complex physical injuries, problems with speech and language, visual impairment and challenging behavioural issues. For the next 16 years, Jason was in and out of unsuitable care homes. His mother Ann described Jason as an orchestra without a conductor. In 2016, Ann discovered the Chaseley Trust in Eastbourne and Jason was welcomed in as a new resident. The nursing care and rehabilitation work is starting to pay dividends. In the last year, Jason’s behaviour has dramatically improved. Ann credits this improvement in Jason’s behaviour to the high quality and the dedication of staff in enabling residents like Jason to achieve their maximum potential. Ann said: “He is calmer and has an increased sense of belonging. I feel that, at last, Jason has found his conductor.”

THE CHASELEY TRUST The Chaseley Trust was established in Eastbourne in 1945 by Dr Luttwig Guttmann to care for soldiers returning from the Second World War with spinal injuries. Today, the charity provides care and rehabilitation services for all adults over the age of 18 who have significant physical disabilities. It is currently rated Outstanding for its quality of care by the Care Quality Commission. The 55-bed home specialises in long-term nursing, respite and day care for people with complex disabilities. The multi-disciplinary approach to care and

rehabilitation includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social and recreational activities ensuring that people have independence and control over their lives and are treated with dignity and respect at all times. The ethos of the charity remains the same as when first founded over seventy years ago, to enable people with disabilities to lead a full and active life in spite of their disabilities.

URGENT FUNDRAISING APPEAL Our residents love the peace and tranquility of Chaseley. But the building is feeling its years. It would be wonderful if Sussex Living readers could help us bring the building into the 21st Century. Every penny makes a big difference to our shopping list, which includes: A total refurbishment of the five shower rooms and installation of two new bathrooms at a cost of £120,000

A Rehabilitation Kitchen for the preparation of residents moving on to independent living, and the occupational therapy of those re-learning lost skills at a cost of £60,000 to £80,000 A new sensory room, offering the most up to date facilities and assistive technologies at a cost of £25,000

To donate, or to find out more about how you could support us at the Chaseley Trust, please email us at fundraising@chaseleytrust.org or visit us at www.chaseley.org.uk

PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU

A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.

Place a different arithmetical sign (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in each circle so that the total of each line across and down is the same. Perform the first calculation in each line first and ignore the mathematical law which says you should always perform division and multiplication before addition and subtraction.

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

MONEY MATTERS

Warning! SCAM ALERT

£

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is… Robin Stevenson tells a tale of warning for scam tax refund emails. You have been warned!

I

recently received an email seemingly from HMRC, of these unsolicited emails is for you to click on the link and telling me that I am due a tax refund and giving me enter your bank account details, or to unwittingly download a link to click on to claim it. And I’ll admit it carried a virus program onto your computer to gather your personal HMRC’s logo, used HMRC’s green colour scheme and information so it can be used by fraudsters to access your money. the amount it said I was due wasn’t unbelievable – in all the With all scams like this, it’s the fraudsters who will be email looked genuine. But of course, I know my tax position, I receiving money, not you! And it will be your money! know whether I am owed a tax liability or not, so I immediately Due credit to HMRC, they are trying to prevent such emails knew something was wrong. and I am sure a lot of HMRC resource is being used to close Closer inspection spotted a spelling mistake, hovering these emails down, but of course as soon as one is closed down over the link to take me to the refund page another one is opened up. showed a different address to HMRC, two Best advice if you receive one of these different fonts were used, the green colour emails is to delete it. The overall insecurity With all scams like this, it’s scheme was slightly too light, and other than of the internet and email means that HMRC the fraudsters who will be the name attached to my email account there will not contact you by this method, I mean receiving money, not you! wasn’t anything in the email to identify me where did they get your email address from? like I would expect from HMRC. Not that I doubt you have ever given it to them. HMRC would have emailed me without my If you are unsure of your tax position express permission anyway. and the temptation of that email offering a tax refund is just too But that is the problem, to the untrained eye the email much then always, but always, telephone HMRC first. Don’t use looks authentic, unless you are really up to date with your the telephone number shown in the email, use the internet to own taxes, and most people aren’t, then a tax refund is usually find HMRC’s telephone number (it’s 0300 200 3300) and speak something other people receive so when the chance comes to an HMRC officer. Making that telephone call instead of along for an unexpected but welcome windfall then it is mighty clicking on the email might very well save you a lot of money. tempting and difficult to ignore. But of course, the sole purpose In other news… we are busy preparing P11d’s for our clients. These are the forms that inform HMRC of any taxable benefits that employees have received in the year over and above their salary. HMRC will use this information to adjust the PAYE code you see on payslips which in turn deducts the appropriate amount of tax taken from your salary. Employers will be aware that these P11d forms need to be filed with HMRC by 6th July. If you employ people and aren’t sure about the P11d form or have any questions, then do get in touch.
