ADVENTURE

Taking on what seems to be a colossal challenge, Mike Scholes and Deborah Day are planning a record breaking Atlantic balloon flight in aid of Blind Veterans UK. Ruth Lawrence paid this inspirational couple a visit to find out more

Up, up & away I

f you’ve crossed the Atlantic, chances are you’ve taken off, eaten lunch and had a snooze in the air before landing a few hours later, ready to face the day ahead. Imagine then, taking up to ten days, piloting your own craft, being open to the elements 24/7 and confined, with another person in a basket with smaller dimensions than a double bed. This will be the challenge facing Deborah Day and Mike Scholes from Lindfield, when they attempt their world record breaking Atlantic balloon crossing while promoting Blind Veterans UK this summer. Mike lost 85% of his sight in 2007 due to a rare genetic condition; before this he was a pilot in the Royal Navy and flew gliders before taking up ballooning. He gained his ballooning Commercial Pilots Licence in 1993 and nine years later won the Great British Long Jump (GBLJ) by flying from 8 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2019

Caernarfon to Wattisham, a distance of 231 miles. He was running a successful hot air balloon business when his sight began to fail but a year later ran his first marathon, determined not to diminish his love of adventure and challenge. In 2006 he piloted a balloon up to 32,000 feet using a builders bag instead of a basket to save weight, joining just six other pilots who have flown over 31,000 feet and the same year set five records for British hot air balloon duration flights. He was awarded the Royal Aero Club Bronze Medal by HRH Duke of York a year later and again won the GBLJ record using a home built basket. Not one to take things easy, Mike trekked across the Arctic to the geographic North Pole in 2010 to raise funds for Blind Veterans UK, who provide blind and partially sighted ex-service men and women with rehabilitation, emotional support, training and practical advice.

Mike’s partner, Deborah Day is equally committed to adventure; she was an elite marathon runner and successful triathlete, competing in 29 races and then gained her pilot’s licence in 2013. The same year, she took part in the Queen’s Cup Air Race and won the Counties Challenge Trophy and the year 10 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2019

after won the Addams Sparks Trophy for balloon pilot of the year. She won the GBLJ that year with a distance of 212 miles and in 2016, her GBLJ entry took her along the south coast from Eastbourne to near Crediton in Devon in an ambitious flight that took her south of Brighton and over Selsey Bill. She gained her Commercial Pilot Licence in 2017 and the same year won the GBLJ flying from Selkirk, Scotland to Woburn in Bedfordshire, a distance of 264 miles. Deborah and Mike’s long history of endurance training and achievement on ground and air will stand them in good stead for the ambitious challenge they face this summer. They will have to train for gas ballooning, distance running, swimming, altitude and low temperature acclimatisation and ocean survival, where they will acclimatise against cold water shock in case they have to land in the sea. Although their basket will have a cover to keep them dry, temperatures could plummet at night so they are going to test sleeping in the basket in the Alps for three days to acclimatise themselves to cold. Strangely, one of the most challenging aspects of the flight will be to remain still in such a confined space for such a length of time; with an approximate average speed of 30 knots per hour, the flight could take anything up to ten days depending on wind speed. The balloon is a Roziere, which will be filled with 85% helium and 15% warm air; it can take a couple of hours to fully inflate to its 85ft height. Depending on weather, the couple will fly at altitudes between 500 and 16,000 feet. Although they won’t be utilising the jet stream during their flight, it does drag a lower air stream underneath and it’s a steady westerly that they will need to take them across the Atlantic. They are intending to take off from Quebec City in Canada and if the wind direction is favourable, they may head to Eastern Europe but they don’t know where they’ll land. Ballooning is entirely dependent on the wind direction; the only control is over altitude and this is what makes it such an interesting way to fly. With no light pollution over the Atlantic, the night skies should make an extraordinary spectacle, with shooting stars aplenty; Debbie will be using a drone and lightweight adventure camera to capture footage of the flight as they travel. Mike and Deborah will be attempting several records during the flight; the ladies pilot duration record will be broken after 75 hours and Deborah aims to capture the ladies distance record as well. She will be the first lady to captain such a flight and Mike will be the first registered blind person to crew on a flight like this. If they reach an altitude of 23,000 feet,

SECTION SUBJECT they will also achieve the altitude record for that size of balloon. There is little chance of carrying out trials for this flight; the helium alone will cost £18,000 and they have to ship or air freight the balloon over to Canada for the launch. They are seeking sponsors for this and future flights, all to help Blind Veterans UK and businesses will benefit from a huge amount of publicity from the flight and opportunities including signed individual photos from Mike and Deborah. People will be able to track the couple’s progress on the website they will be setting up and presently all info is on their Facebook page and via

Ballooning is entirely dependent on the wind direction; the only control is over altitude and this is what makes it such an interesting way to fly Twitter. Because they don’t know where they’ll be landing, they are dependent on people to retrieve them and the balloon on the ground and already have friends in Ireland and the UK to help if they land there or on the mainland. Mike and Deborah will be taking six 80L tanks of helium and the equivalent weight in sandbags so they can jettison environmentally friendly sand when each tank empties instead of the polluting tanks. They will drop nothing that isn’t biodegradable and solar panels will be used to power and charge equipment. From sunrise to mid afternoon the solar effect will be enough to keep the helium at the right temperature and they aim to travel mainly around 3 to 5,000ft altitude. During the flight, Deborah will aim to sleep after sunrise when Mike will take over, monitoring the flight with a specially designed talking computer. Add to that a life raft, distress beacons and flares and there will be little room to move once they are in the air. It’s rare to meet a couple who have achieved so much as individuals before joining forces to take on such an immense challenge and meeting them was a humbling experience. Both possess an unquenchable passion for challenge and they make an unbeatable team both on the ground and in the air. l Gofundme/transatlantic-balloon-challenge @BalloonthePond on Twitter www.blindveterans.org.uk

LOCATION

Bordered by the South Downs, the picturesque and peaceful village of Pevensey lies two miles inland from the sea at the south western tip of 1066 Country. Peter d’Aguilar discovers more

PICTURE BOOK

PEVENSEY

B

ack in Roman times, Pevensey stood on an outcrop of land forming a peninsula bordered by a tidal lagoon. Over the centuries, the village has gradually become cut off from the sea; due to shingle imported by longshore drift. At the heart of the village sit the imposing ruins of Pevensey Castle, a rare medieval shore fort that traces its origins back to the first century AD. Pevensey Bay, one mile to the south-east, was the point where William the Conqueror landed to launch the Norman Invasion – taking advantage of a rare gap in the south coast’s line of cliffs. To the north east, Pevensey Levels comprises fifty square miles of marshland, a nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Pevensey Bay is an ancient fishing village founded in the seventeenth century as Wallsend, marking the end of the sea wall that stretches back to Eastbourne. Completely under water at the time of the Norman Invasion, the constant erosion of nearby Beachy Head has created the popular pebbly beach of today. During the sixteenth century, Pevensey became a noncorporate limb of the Cinque Ports and later a convenient landing place for smuggling – climaxing in a violent clash between smugglers and customs men in 1833. The Martello Towers at Pevensey Bay were part of the south coast network of defences built to counter the threat of a Napoleonic invasion in the 14 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2019

early nineteenth century. In the early 1900s the village began to evolve into a holiday resort, with the development of the coastline gathering momentum in the 1930s. Today the seafront at Pevensey Bay is an attractive if eclectic mixture of Edwardian town houses, bungalows, shacks and caravan parks. The whole of the Pevensey area has a

strong community atmosphere and is well served with local clubs and societies. Together, Natural England and Sussex Wildlife Trust jointly own Pevensey Levels and manage its conservation programme. The marshland area is home to many nationally rare plants and invertebrates, including the fen raft spider, and provides a natural haven for wild birds, flowers and animals. Due to its fragility, the site is not open to the public. Pevensey Castle dates back to AD 300 and was originally named Anderitum or Anterida. The oldest surviving stone is from the Roman period and, originally, the sea surrounded the fort on three sides. Having been stormed by a succession of Jutes, Saxons and Normans, William the Conqueror presented the castle to his brother Robert; who set about restoring the stonework. It somehow managed to survive several medieval sieges, as well as demolition orders issued by Queen Elizabeth I and Oliver Cromwell. JMW Turner made several paintings and sketches of the castle in the early part of the nineteenth century. During World War II the castle, which is now in the care English Heritage, became a lookout post over the channel for German aircraft. Spread out below the castle, Pevensey village offers a harmonious mix of weatherboard, tile-hung, flint and stone cottages, antique shops, traditional pubs and cafes. The

Pevensey Castle

Pevensey Court House Museum in the High Street dates back to the thirteenth century. Until 1886, the building was used as the local jail and the smallest town hall in England. The court room with dock, cells and exercise yard are still intact and the museum has an interesting selection of local history displays. The fourteenth century Old Mint House, replete with myth and legend, has recently passed into new ownership for renovation. Pevensey marks the starting point of the 1066 Country Walk, a thirty-mile footpath

which passes through a number of historical sites including Herstmonceux and Battle, as well as some beautiful countryside, before finishing up in Rye. Pevensey’s places of worship include the Anglican parish church of St Nicolas and the Wesleyan Methodist church. Pevensey Bay offers a choice between the Holy Rood Catholic church, the Free Church and St Wilfrid’s. Unsurprisingly, given its nautical history, Pevensey Bay is a haven for sailors. The thriving sailing club offers several classes of boat and has a full

hamlet to the west of Pevensey Castle. The parish occupies a ridge at the western end of the Pevensey Levels. The eleventh century St Mary’s

church at Westham is believed to be the oldest Norman church in England, and was painted many times by Victorian landscape artist Lewis Pinhorn Wood. St Luke’s parish church at Stone Cross fell into disrepair during the 1970s and was refurbished and reopened in 1988. The Grade II* listed windmill at Stone Cross was completed in 1876 and is the last of its type to be built in Sussex. Although it ceased commercial operation in 1937, it has since been refurbished and is now open to the public. l

Embarking on a self-build project can never be taken lightly. Factor in wet weather, heavy soil and a densely forested plot of land in the remote part of a forest, and even the most committed budding project manager will be tested to the limit. This was the case for Anna Gregorek and her husband Andy who constructed a holiday home in beautiful woodland. The couple first discussed building the property back in 2010, before their two children, Aurelia and Athena, had arrived. But it would be a long and challenging journey before their dream became a reality. They spent a lot of time travelling back and forth to visit Anna’s parents just down the road from the site. Anna was keen that she and Andy had a place to escape to, “we both work full time in London, and there was plenty of travelling toand-fro to see my parents,” says Anna. “After a lot of discussion we decided to take the plunge and build a property nearby.”

LIVING ROOM

The open-plan living space is minimal and unfussy with muted colours, timber flooring and an inset wood burner

Gifted with a piece of her parents’ land, Anna and Andy made plans for their new home. The pair enlisted a local architect and family friend to design an eco-friendly house that would blend into its surroundings. “Eco elements were a key part of the brief,” comments Anna. The couple both felt strongly that the house should be as energy-efficient as possible, particularly as securing planning permission to clear and build in the middle of the forest depended on it. As a result, the eco-friendly features include an air source heat pump, a borehole for fresh water, solar panels, photovoltaic panels, a sedum moss roof and wood-burning stove, which means that the underfloor heating rarely needs to be turned on. Almost every aspect of the house was designed with a nod to nature – even the way it looks. “The rather spiky edge appearance of the building’s jagged, mono-pitched roof picks up the silhouette of the pine trees,” says the architect. “This project was about reflecting the forest around us, not taking away from it,” Anna elaborates. On the ground floor, a bedroom, shower room and open-plan living space have just the right amount of luxe detailing to be comfortable and airy. Floor-to-ceiling windows and southfacing bi-fold doors lead out to a covered terrace, creating an inside-outside feeling in the summer. The two bedrooms upstairs cantilever outward, with windows that provide a great view of the wildlife among the trees. After planning permission was granted in late

2012, Andy and a friend spent the majority of the summer of 2013 readying the site for the build, which officially started in May 2014. “The clearing is down a small, private road and it was necessary to create a separate track to access it,” explains Anna. Living 250 miles away during construction meant that Anna and Andy had to rely on the architect and family to check in on site. The couple travelled down as much as possible but with new babies arriving and jobs to hold down, it was less than they would have liked. Construction was slow at first, with bad weather seriously hindering progress.

BEDROOM

Long horizontal windows in the bedrooms are reminiscent of a wildlife hide.

The trickiest part came when trying to lay the concrete foundations. “On digging into the ground we came up against dense yellow clay, says the architect. “There is very little topsoil so drainage is poor, and we had to go down about 2.5m in places with reinforced concrete, which was quite a task for such a small site. Another big job was laying cable to provide electricity, which proved difficult because it was bird-nesting season, so Anna and Andy had no choice but to wait it out. Once the foundations were in place, everything went smoothly – the timber frame was erected and the house was constructed quickly. Anna ordered the fixtures and fittings without having seen the house, as she was due to give birth imminently. The furnishings and palette are purposefully neutral to keep the focus on the surroundings,

and engineered oak floors, a bespoke oak staircase and odd accents of colour make for a pared-back, welcoming bolt-hole. In total Anna and Andy spent around 15 per cent more than they had originally budgeted for. “My advice is to get the project thoroughly quantified and costed before you get under way,” says the architect . Be that as it may, the couple are overjoyed with their self-build venture. “We hope to retire to our forest house someday,” she says. ‘It’s a wonderful retreat in the woods.’ l Photos: Kristy Noble/Narratives Styling: Harriet Lorraine Smith/Narratives Writing: Elizabeth Choppin/Narratives

PETS

It’s a Dog’s Life The long winter months brought new creative hobbies in the Rolo household, where they were met with varying degrees of approval

O

ne of the features of seasons that commonly produce poor weather is that ‘Them Indoors’ divert their attentions to indoor activities such as making things. On the plus side, if they take up new crafts, they tend to seek out specialist classes to upskill them in their chosen art form and this can have unexpected benefits. ‘Him Indoors’ has recently decided to learn drawing, and his teacher happens to do rather lovely pet portraits. He got ‘Her Indoors’ a great oil painting of my apprentice, Teddy, for Christmas, and a second portrait, of yours truly, has been commissioned for her birthday. What nicer thing could they chose to spend their money on? ‘Her Indoors’, on the other hand, has dabbled in stained glass, and when she decided to do a round window for the bathroom, I had high hopes that I would be immortalised, like a deity, gazing down in all my translucent glory on the family ablutions, but in an act of not inconsiderable treachery, she decided to portray swallows skimming the summer fields instead. What’s that all about? Things improved however, when she did a workshop on needle-felting,

32 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2019

and there is a very handsome Border Terrier adorning the bookshelves in the dining room. It took her ages to make so I’m guessing we won’t be seeing the addition of a miniature Teddy any time soon.

She thought I could do with a nice jumper. I was a bit doubtful about the effect on my street credibility When the Juniors were little, ‘Her Indoors’ devoted her creative efforts to making things for them. ‘Junior Him’ reckons that hand-knitted jumpers have given him a life-long aversion to woollies, making him come over all itchy before he’s even put them on. However, now that the younger family members have been suitably scarred for life and have left home to carry their traumas into the wider world, ‘Her Indoors’ has turned her attention to me and Teddy. He has so far escaped with

a hand knitted bandana; red with a fetching beige paw print design. Recently however, she thought I could do with a nice jumper. I was a bit doubtful about the effect on my street credibility, but, in fairness, she came up trumps with a fetching little number in brightly coloured stripes. It’s ideal for chilly morning buggy rides, although best avoided in wet weather as it suffers from the sagging problems previously associated with hand-knitted swimwear, for those old enough to remember this affront to humanity. However, my buggy illustrated how practical skills can be dubiously employed. When we first had it, I kept trying to stage my own exits, and ‘Her Indoors’ had to act swiftly to catch me, which was all good training for her reflexes. Anyway, ‘Them Indoors’ combined their efforts to come up with a fiendish securing device so I can’t escape, although it’s probably an infringement of my civil liberties. Still, now that March is upon us, things will soon be picking up in the garden with attention diverted elsewhere, meaning Teds and I will be safe for a bit. Roll on the good weather! l

BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest Lucy’s childhood was one of extreme poverty in rural Illinois when she often went hungry and was ostracised because of it by the other children at school. She was cold, too, and used to stay on at school to do her homework just to be in the warm. Perhaps her parents were unaware that they were not bringing up their three children in a way that would let them function properly in the wider world, perhaps not, and there are suggestions of physical abuse. Lucy eventually goes to college, and doesn’t find it easy, although in the end she becomes a writer. She only sees her mother one more time, nine years later, after the time in the hospital. This is delicately written, in a series of both critical and sympathetic snapshots, and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

MY NAME IS LUCY BARTON

by Elizabeth Strout (Penguin Random House) This is quite a short book. The narrator finds herself in hospital for several weeks after a minor operation goes wrong in some unspecified way. She has a husband and two children at home, about whom she worries, but one day she wakes to find her estranged mother sitting at the end of the bed. What follows is a tentative re-engagement.

Lucy’s childhood was one of extreme poverty in Illinois when she often went hungry

It was once believed that willow trees could uproot themselves and walk about at night

A HISTORY OF TREES

by Simon Wills (White Owl) Many years ago I illustrated a book on trees, so I have looked at this with a particularly critical eye. My verdict? Superb! Twenty-eight different trees are listed, and the facts about them are unusual and intriguing. It was once believed that willow trees could uproot themselves and walk about at night, that rowan trees protected you from lightning, and that sleeping under a yew tree could make you so ill that you could even die. Monkey puzzle trees have been around since dinosaurs stalked the land, although they were only introduced here in 1795, and the sycamore is not a native either and arrived in the fifteenth or

THE TIDDLER STICKER ACTIVITY BOOK

by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler (Alison Green Books) This is aimed at 3 – 7 year olds (although some sections will need the help of someone older). It’s based on the Tiddler book, by the author of The Gruffalo. Tiddler is the smallest fish in the shoal, who is always late for everything. But despite being little, he has a big imagination and an awful lot of cheek, and he comes up with the most outrageous excuses for his tardiness. Tiddler manages to be original with extraordinary regularity, until something dramatic really does happen… What I love about the pictures is the way each animal has a different expression.

sixteenth century. The best ink used to be made from the galls on oak trees, it takes 40 litres of Canadian maple sap to produce 1 litre of maple syrup, and small chips of hazel wood were used to purify wine. The book is wellwritten, and beautifully presented with some delightful photographs taken by the author. Simon Wills is a history journalist and genealogist, and has appeared on the TV programme Who Do You Think You Are?

A good buy for a rainy day or a car journey and would make an excellent companion piece for the original book. I’ve never reviewed a sticker book before, but this is great fun with lots of different activities. There’s colouring in, dot-joining to make a picture, copying a drawing from a grid, a wordsearch, odd ones out and other games. The stickers themselves are charming and used to provide answers to some of the puzzles. The solutions to all the sections are at the back; a good buy for a rainy day or a car journey, and would make an excellent companion piece for the original book.

BLOOMING TIMES

So often just a dumping ground for junk, balconies are seriously under-utilised spaces with great gardening potential, argues Flo Whitaker

The High Life T

here’s nothing sadder than the sight of an abandoned balcony; empty, apart from a rusted clothes airer and a forgotten bicycle. In this hectic world, the benefits of a soothing outdoor space cannot be over-emphasised. If you have a balcony, however small, you can create your own little oasis of calm. Firstly, make sure there are no restrictions to prevent you from making a

garden. This applies regardless of whether you rent, or are an owner-occupier, live in a single dwelling or a multi-occupancy building. Consult your lease, rental agreement or property deeds. If in doubt, seek advice from the property management company or a solicitor. If your plans are modest; for instance, a few pots and simple garden furniture, then weight loading is unlikely to be an issue. More ambitious schemes may require advice from a structural engineer, (never, ever underestimate the weight of soil!) Next, think about barrier/screening plants. Balconies can be windy places. Faced with a tall, impenetrable barrier, even the lightest breeze will create turbulence as it seeks an escape Violas, impatiens, route around a building. A nicotiana and windbreak made from living many spring bulbs plants or trellis panels will filter the air and reduce wind enjoy light shade speed. Windbreak plants can be grown in individual pots, but, if possible, construct a wooden trough to the length required and make it approximately 30 x 30 cms in width and height. This will give a good depth of soil for plants to thrive. A trellis or woven wicker panel screwed to the back of the trough is an excellent idea as it will serve as a windbreak and privacy screen. Yew and box are classic evergreen hedging

plants that, once established, require minimal care. An annual trim and feed will keep them happy. In open ground, hornbeam and hawthorn make large hedging plants. However, container planting will restrict their vigour, allowing them to be kept to a manageable size. Small, young plants establish faster than mature specimens – and they’re cheaper too! If the area is really breezy, protect plants with windbreak netting for the first year. A few permanent shrubs will give year-round colour and interest. Viburnums are tough and reliable – many varieties produce scented flowers from autumn to spring. Cornus is virtually indestructible and has good-looking foliage in

summer and vivid, colourful bare stems in winter. Unless you can offer sheltered, cool conditions, forget about acers as their delicate foliage is quickly damaged by sun and wind. Resilient sambucus has acer-like leaves and will cope where acers won’t. A trellis panel, firmly secured to a wall, gives scope for vertical gardening. Walls absorb heat during the day and slowly release it at night, so use this to your advantage. Climbing summer annuals such as rhodochiton, cobaea and ipomoea will quickly cover a wall, giving an exotic feel. Bulbs and bedding plants give blasts of colour for little effort. Summer bedding plants mostly prefer a sunny outlook, but violas, impatiens, nicotiana and many spring bulbs enjoy light shade. Experiment to see what works in your space and don’t be disheartened by the occasional disaster. If the site is sheltered, it’s possible to grow a few vegetables too. Use a large pot for climbing beans as they do better with a deeper root run. Tomatoes will enjoy the reflected heat from a wall. ‘Cut-and-come-again’ lettuce takes moments to sow and will keep on producing fresh leaves for months. Baby carrots, spring onions and radishes are perfect for containers. Sun-loving thyme, basil, sage and rosemary do well in pots. Some herbs are cooler customers. Parsley and chives quickly run to seed in hot locations – a lightly shaded spot will extend their lifespan. Mint comes in many different varieties. All types have aromatic, ornamental foliage and most will thrive in dappled shade.

Garden furniture is an expensive outlay so think carefully before you buy. Balcony furniture has to remain in situ all year round, so a good-looking design is imperative. How do you envisage using your balcony space – just for recreational sitting out, or are you planning some serious gardening too? If the latter, choose a table that will be large enough to also use as a work surface. A protective table cover costs a few pounds and will transform a dining table into a potting bench within moments. The best modular-type furniture combines contemporary styling with clever space-saving features, with seating that stows neatly underneath the table when not required. Some garden benches have lift-off seats, providing useful storage underneath and lightweight folding furniture is ideal where space is limited. An exterior power supply gives scope for permanent outdoor lighting that will increase the year-

round usability of a balcony. A small, electrically-powered water feature will provide a relaxing backdrop and increase humidity – something your plants will appreciate, especially in hot weather. Water adds an exciting element to any garden – birds may even stop off to drink and bathe. Balconies come with challenging gardening conditions but there are plus points too. Marauding foxes and badgers won’t dig up your flowerbeds. Many aphids are low-level fliers who avoid venturing above a few metres. Pests and diseases are easier to control. Harmful moulds and mildews lurking in my neighbour’s garden today will invariably turn up in my garden tomorrow, but this scarcely troubles the balcony owner, who can smugly gaze down upon the hapless terra-firma gardener wrestling with potato blight. Balcony gardens are uniquely special places – personal little Eden’s suspended in the sky. l

EDUCATION

A recent meeting with retired teacher Bob Chambers saw Sasha Kanal transported back to her school days where they discussed life, the universe and all things physics

IT’S ALL

Relative T

here’s no one more enthusiastic about science and the teaching of it than retired teacher Bob Chambers. And I should know. I in fact had the pleasure of being taught by this kindly, patient, knowledgeable man as a student in the late 80s. Back then, Bob’s passion for the subject and aim to make it fun for all his pupils shone through. It seems then that not much has changed, when I meet him to discuss his thoughts on physics and education in today’s world. Although officially retired in 2001, Bob has since tutored GCSE pupils in maths and physics to great success. “The best thing to witness as a teacher is when the penny drops for a student and they finally understand a concept they may have been struggling with. It’s the most wonderful feeling in the world for me and for them hopefully!” He smiles. Originally from the Midlands, Bob’s career started in the RAF as a radar fitter while doing National Service. After the RAF, Bob became a computer programmer and then systems analyst and moved to Sussex with his wife and two sons. It was then that he decided to study for a degree in Physics and Astronomy at Sussex University followed by a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education), so he could go on and teach it. Why physics? I ask Bob. “I

wanted to study something that existed naturally and wasn’t ‘manmade’ so to speak. Physics has existed since the universe’s creation and its application a firm part of our lives on this planet,” says Bob. In fact Bob places great emphasis on relaying the importance of physics in everyday life to his pupils. “I always try to fire them up about the kind of jobs and careers they can do if they study physics. This puts the subject in context for them. It’s a simple premise but one that’s sometimes overlooked when teaching.”

The best thing to witness as a teacher is when the penny drops for a student The teaching of physics has changed a lot since the 1980s and Bob himself witnessed the shifts across the decades. “When I first taught, it was all about learning a law such as Newton’s Law and then experimentation to prove it. You built your knowledge on a Law of Physics and then used it. In the 90s this changed to more project-based teaching, where both social and scientific aspects of a topic such as ‘energy’ were examined.” And how to make a subject like Physics fun for young people today?

“The Royal Institution in London hosts fantastic, hands-on lectures for children aged 11-18 and the way they’re presented is just brilliant,” says Bob. “They are funny, practical and involving - the best way to teach science really.” “Not forgetting the wonderful physicists such as Einstein we can tell today’s kids about,” he continues. “Albert Einstein turned the world of science on its head and had such a colossal impact on physics – we can inspire children today with great thinkers and mavericks such as him.” And for a moment I’m transported back to a lesson in the science lab at my old school and want to learn those Laws again. Thank you Mr Chambers. l

A Fresh Approach

TO SHOPPING On a recent visit to the Orchards Shopping Centre in Haywards Heath, Lisa de Silva discovered more about this busy, vibrant community minded retail centre

W

hile the past decade has been a challenging time for much of the country’s retail industry, the Orchards Shopping Centre in Haywards Heath continues to buck the trend. With a strong mix of retailers, a bustling market and full calendar of community events, it is no surprise that the Orchards achieved close to a 5.5 million footfall in 2018. “I believe our success is down to the fact that we are so much more than just a shopping centre,” explains Centre Manager, Nicola Bird. “We run more community events here than any other known shopping centre in the country and they are all free of charge. It’s a great way to bring people in so they can see what a fantastic range of retailers we have, both in terms of national brands, like Marks and Spencer and Fat Face, as well as independents like Calliope and Locks & Cobblers.” The variety of retailers is impressive; from clothing, jewellers, and hairdressers to homeware, gift shops, beauty salons and eateries, such as the everpopular Bay Tree Cafe, serving the best Sussex has to offer. Another big hit with customers is the thriving weekly market which runs every Thursday to Saturday. “Our market continues to go from strength to strength,” Nicola tells me. “We’ve got two new street food stalls, Italian and Thai which are really popular and complement our other regulars selling cakes, bread, jewellery and rare plants, but the backbone of the market is Quality Fruits.” Quality Fruits was previously on the Broadway in Haywards Heath but can now be found selling fruit and veg every Wednesday to Saturday in the Orchards and on Saturdays customers can enjoy

a vitamin C boost with a drink from their fresh orange juice machine. Nicola is passionate about bringing the community together and making the Orchards a social hub where people can meet up and make new friends and has developed a full calendar of exciting events for 2019. “There is no charge for any of our events and our aim is to get people socialising and enjoy being part of the community,” she says. The calendar kicks off with a Mother’s Day Workshop on Saturday 30th March. Last year over 100 children came to the event and made or decorated a gift to give to their mums on Mother’s Day. A similar event is planned for Saturday 13th April, with

an Easter Workshop where children can enjoy festive crafting, before the big Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday 20th April. Always a popular event, the Easter eggs are hidden in retailers’ windows and the children have to see how many they can spot. The Orchards also has a strong commitment to good causes and is a proud sponsor of Haywards Heath Rugby Club Minis, and is proud to support health and well-being in the community at large. What’s more, over the past five years the Orchards has raised over £20,000 for the Great Ormand Street Hospital charity. “We love raising money for good causes and from this year we’ve decided to change our charity on an annual basis. As 2019 is the centenary of Save the Children, we’ve chosen to hold

a fundraiser as part of the centre’s Transforming Tomorrow campaign,” says Nicola. This exciting event will take place on Saturday 18th May with live entertainment on the green, pony rides, a disco dome, workshops, Spanish dancing and a Zumba-thon. The warmer summer months are a great opportunity to enjoy some local outdoor activities and this year the Orchards has a great range of events on offer. From 4-9pm on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd June the centre is hosting the Power of Music weekend, featuring professional artists performing a vast array of music. Or for a more family-orientated day out, put Saturday 13th July in your diary for the annual Strictly Fun day, with an assault course and arcade games. Another date to add is 3rd August when Adur Concert Band will be performing. Another new and charitable event the Orchards are proud to be hosting this year is the Music Against Cancer celebration. Professional local singer Tania Rodd asked the centre to be the southeast venue for this national event which will include professional bands from all over the country coming along to sing. Music Against Cancer is on Sunday 18th August and all money raised on the day will be donated to St Peter & St James Hospice in Chailey. Orchard’s Beach Week marks its fifth year in 2019 and runs from Thursday

22nd to Saturday 24th August featuring large sandpits, Marco the Magician, Punch and Judy show, plate-spinning, magic tricks, large inflatable and a fun photo booth. “Marco is phenomenal,” laughs Nicola. “We couldn’t do it

We run more community events than any other known shopping centre in the country and they are all free of charge

without him. He makes it such great fun for everyone.” The last event in the calendar is the Orchards Christmas Festival on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th November. It is a two day spectacular with back to back entertainment and the big Christmas lights switch on at 5pm. And if all of that wasn’t enough, Nicola has arranged some Spanish dancing from the local Spanish dance company, Alegria. The dancers will be flamenco dancing as well as showcasing Flamenco Fitness and everyone is welcome to join in the fun and bring a touch of Spanish passion into their lives. Alegria will be in the Orchards from 11am to 1pm on Saturday 27th April, 15th June and 14th September. “I wanted to bring in something a little bit different,” says Nicola, “to put a smile on people’s faces.” With the Orchards Centre Management team at the helm, and a new app in the pipeline, designed to highlight the best of the retailers offers, promotions and community events, the future is looking bright for the Orchards. l The Orchards Shopping Centre 10 St Wilfrid’s Way, Haywards Heath RH16 3QH 01444 410620 nicola.bird@midsussex.gov.uk www.theorchardsshopping.com

SLIP ON IN

BEAUTY & FASHION

For Sara Whatley there is never a bad time to don a slipper – a cure all and comfort blanket, slippers bring her year-round joy

The Slipper Boot

Best reserved for the colder months of the year. Slipper boots can be anything from knitted with a thin sole to a full-on fur lined indoor boot which could be lightly worn outside.

F

or me, there is no slipper season. In fact, it’s permanently slipper season. Spring, summer, autumn, winter, they always find a place in my heart… and on my feet. You may have guessed, I am a big slipper fan. As soon as I’m through the door I kick off the shoes, slip on the slippers and feel myself instantly relax. They are a hug for the feet, a signifier that you’re home and safe and of course, they help to prolong the vacuuming duties! Of course, I presume that the rest of human kind is equally in love with slippers as I am, but if for some strange

reason there are still a few who need converting let me wow you with the immense array of slipper choice there is to behold.

Evening Slippers

For the ultimate in sophistication. Must be monogrammed and preferably in either animal print or velvet with a small clip-cloppy heal. Perhaps more fashion statement than comfort.

Fluffy Mules

Saucy, fun and frisky, these little numbers are not the most practical slippers but spice up special occasions no end. To my mind should definitely be adorned with diamante sparkles.

Let me wow you with the immense array of slipper choice there is to behold

Moccasins & Leather Slippers

Backless Slippers & Flip Flops I think of these as more of a warm weather slipper or something easy to travel with. Rollable or able to pack very flat, this type of footwear can go with you everywhere!

Timeless, classic and hard wearing. The leather wears beautifully with age and the sheep skin moulds to the shape of your feet – heavenly. My main slipper of choice.

Practical Indoor Shoes

For the sensible multi tasker. Are you always popping in and out the house? Then this is the slipper for you! A soft and cosy top with a sturdy waterproof sole. Why ever take them off?

BODY BUZZ

Walk the

Court!

WHAT IS IT EXACTLY? Walking netball is a slower version of a normal netball game. Netball literally done at a walking pace, designed to be open to all, regardless of fitness levels or age. The rules are clear and so are the health benefits! Walking netball uses a regular netball court as well as the official seven aside netball positions. A player must never have both feet off the ground at once, meaning no running or jumping allowed! Once a player receives the ball, they can only take one or two steps with the ball in their hands before they pass to their teammate or shoot

Walking netball uses a regular netball court as well as the official seven aside netball positions

Do you have fond memories of playing netball? If you’d like to try the sport again, but at a gentler pace, Sasha Kanal may just have the game for you

N

etball is thriving across the UK with record numbers of participants playing the game according to England Netball. The British national team is now ranked as one of the top two teams in the world, which has of course helped the sport’s popularity no end. Mainly a sport for women, men too are now taking up the mantel with their version of the game called ‘nets’,

also fast gaining recognition. Many of you lovely Sussex Living readers will remember playing netball at school with those all too familiar positions of goal defence and goal attack and not forgetting the excitement and pace of a really satisfying match. So what about those who are older, less fit and have a medical condition or perhaps some sort of physical impediment that stops them from running around a netball court with ease? Step in walking netball! Having evolved from a growing demand and trend for walking sports here in the UK, walking netball is now being offered across Sussex at sports clubs and leisure centres.

for a goal. Similarly, a player may only keep the ball in their possession for up to 4 seconds before they must pass it on or shoot again. BENEFITS As well as being a stepping-stone back into the regular game of netball after a long hiatus, the health benefits are not to be overlooked despite it being a slower pursuit. Although you only ‘walk’, it’s the pace of the walk that really reaps rewards and stacks up movement on your activity counter. Continually moving and stretching your limbs, as well as the mental agility and tactics required to try and win make it a great all rounder. Many players, especially those who wouldn’t normally partake in a team sport due to its perceived faster pace, find the social aspect the most beneficial thing about it. Walking through the door to greet your team, a good warm up and then playing a game and communicating to each other, not to mention the rush of endorphins and you have a ‘match’ made in heaven! l

up tennis or returning to the gym after a break. The rotator cuff tendons suffer a minor injury and become inflamed, as does the overlying bursa. The swollen tissue is compressed beneath the acromion bone causing pain.

SHOULDER

Tendonitis

Because we use our arms continuously throughout the day, shoulder pain is something that is near impossible to ignore. One of the common causes of such pain is tendonitis, as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Cameron Hatrick explains WHAT IS TENDONITIS? The term ‘tendonitis’ means inflammation of a tendon, usually as the result of an injury or a period of overuse. ‘Tendinosis’ means chronic degeneration of a tendon, usually as the result of repeated minor injuries failing to heal properly. Tendons are strong cords of tissue that attach muscle to bone and they help to move the joints when the muscles contract. In the shoulder the four main tendons attaching to the head of the humerus (the arm bone) are collectively known as the rotator cuff. They are covered with a bursa which helps the tendons to glide beneath the overlying acromion bone. This is why, in the shoulder, rotator cuff

The main symptom of shoulder tendonitis is pain, particularly when lifting the arm away from the side or when lying on it at night

tendonitis is also known as subacromial bursitis. As the pain is caused by ‘pinching’ of the inflamed bursa and tendon beneath the acromion it may also be called ‘impingement’. (Repeated episodes of tendonitis may lead to chronic damage and tendinosis or even tearing of the degenerate tendon.) WHAT CAUSES TENDONITIS? Tendonitis typically occurs after an injury to the shoulder, such as a fall, or after a period of overuse such as taking

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE TENDONITIS? The main symptom of shoulder tendonitis is pain, particularly when lifting the arm away from the side or when lying on it at night. Typically, you will have difficulty with activities such as putting on a jacket or removing a sweater. Some patients feel the pain when their arm is lifted a certain height and it reduces again when the arm is fully elevated. This is known as a ‘painful arc’.

HOW DO I TREAT TENDONITIS? Rest and activity modification are the first line of treatment. Avoid the activity which caused the pain and try to avoid those which trigger the pain, although this is not so easy when it’s your shoulder! Taking painkillers like paracetemol or ibuprofen also helps, as well as applying an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas to the affected area. Appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises will allow the inflammation to settle whilst maintaining the strength of the rotator cuff. Treatments such as physiotherapy or, occasionally, a steroid injection can be used to treat more persistent cases of tendonitis. Surgery is usually only recommended, after several months, if nothing else has worked. PREVENTING TENDONITIS Warming up correctly before regular sports or exercise will make your body ready for more vigorous activity, and also help to avoid injury. Cooling down and stretching after you finish will also help. If tendonitis is something you have suffered with in the past as a result of exercising or playing sport, you may be able to prevent it from recurring by using different equipment or asking the opinion of a coach about changing your technique. l

CHARITY

IT’S ALL ABOUT CHARITY East Sussex Carers Launch Free Films and Workbook Local charity Care for the Carers, which supports unpaid carers across East Sussex, has launched its free Creative Writing workbook, designed for use by carers groups across the country, and also reveals a collection of short films featuring local carers reflecting on their experiences as carers.

East Sussex carers’ stories

The resources were produced as part of a project to capture the voices of this generation of carers, in a project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Including poetry from local carers and writing exercises, the Creative Writing workbook was produced in collaboration with Care for the Carers’ Writer in Residence, Evlynn Sharp, who has been running workshops to support unpaid carers in the county to voice and share their stories through creative writing.

Care To Win for Chestnut Tree House Chestnut Tree House is the children’s hospice for Sussex and collectively their Lottery players pay for one in four days of their hospice care services. Mrs R from Pevensey has been playing since 2012 and won the £1,000 prize in January 2019. She said, “I was absolutely knocked out, it was such a surprise to get the £1,000 cheque.” “I support the charity because of the fantastic work they do and the wonderful support given to patients’ families. I’ve lost two husbands that were both cared for by a hospice so I know how important hospices are. Thank you and I’ll keep on supporting you.” Join the Lottery and you will help to provide life changing hospice care for local children, week after week. You could also win a top prize of £1,000 every single week. Join today for just £1 a week at www.chestnutlottery.org.uk or call 01903 871842.

The short films contain many different experiences of caring, including Seerche, a former young carer, Hazel, who cares for her neighbour, and Chris, who has been a carer for more than 30 years, his entire adult life. The participants of the films were interviewed by unpaid carer volunteers, who received training from Heritage Eastbourne. Care for the Carers Director of Services, Jo Egan, says, “We hope that through sharing these stories more people will become aware of the number of unpaid carers out there, and people may be able to identify themselves as carers and seek support from us. We are excited to launch the workbook and films, so that other groups can benefit from the power of creative writing.” Thanks to generous funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, ExPat and Eastbourne Borough Council the workbook and films are free to access and use. The films and the workbook are available on Care for the Carers website now www.cftc.org.uk/blog/carers-launchcreative-writing-resources

LOCAL WALK SECTION SUBJECT

HEATHFIELD

WALK

Robert Veitch and his cousin Louise Prieto set out to explore the hinterland of Heathfield. Join them on their ramble over the old railway line and across field and woodland

F

rom Newnham Way car park head south along the Cuckoo Trail. Ever so slightly downhill, it’s easy walking along this former railway line. There’s a pair of metal gates at the junction with Harley Lane and safety barriers precede the crossing of Old Ghyll Road. Shortly after is a nod to the past, a tip of the station master’s hat to the Cuckoo Trail’s previous incarnation. ‘Frenches Halt’ is definitely worth pausing for. “So impressive,” noted Louise, “I love the signal.” It’s easy to imagine how things might have been a century ago; puffs of steam and squealing brakes as the 5:15pm from Waldron and Horeham Road slowed in readiness to stop at Heathfield station. At the next junction, cross Ghyll Road using the Pelican Crossing, rejoining the trail on the corner of Treetops Way. A milepost marker precedes the crossing of Runts Farm Bridge. Then it’s under the bridge at West Street Lane. 250m later peel off to the left, before the bridge over Tubwell Lane. Walk up the hill to the junction with the B2203.

Fallen trunks and multitudes of exposed roots precede the intersection known locally as ‘five ways’ Cross the main road carefully, ambling downhill into Sicklehatch Lane, all the way to the bridge over Waldron Gill. 75m beyond the bridge turn sharp left into Sapperton Wood. Once past the metal gate bear right at the fork, and follow the path north, hugging the barbed wire on the right, heading in the same general northerly direction at the fingerpost. It’s a little soft in places amongst the chestnut trees, but it firms up as holly supersedes the chestnut. Fallen trunks and multitudes

of exposed roots precede the intersection known locally as ‘five ways.’ Head north, indicated by the ‘Wealden Walks’ sign, over the fallen silver birch towards a pair of stiles, 100m apart. A short jaunt uphill leads to a wooden 5-bar gate. Beyond the gate and a wooden shed, is a stile on the right. Over this, the path leads downhill diagonally across the field into the hedge and a stile. Keep right in the next field, wandering downhill to yet another stile. Once over this, turn left, then right, following the track across the dam, keeping Old Mill Pond on the left. Turn right at the bird box by the wooden gate, then across the field towards the drive. Follow the drive uphill, turning left onto Nettlesworth Lane, then 30m later crossing the stile on the right. In the distance is the spire of All Saints Church, Old Heathfield. A glorious sight whatever the weather. “That’s so beautiful,” eulogised Louise. “I’m so glad I’ve come out on this walk.” There’s a rather wobbly stile to clamber over, but overall, it’s a lovely uphill jaunt to the kissing gate in the iron fence. Turn left and amble to the end of the drive, to the junction with Church Street. Turn left and walk downhill, on the right of the road towards any oncoming traffic. After 200m bear right into Weaversbrook Lane keeping the sandstone perimeter wall of Heathfield Park on the right. Where the road turns sharp right, the path heads into the woods by the black and white chevron. After the stile the going underfoot may be squelchy and sticky along the left side of the field all the way to the next stile. Keep left in

the next field, all the way to the following stile, then downhill to the bridge. Once up the steps created by exposed tree roots keep going to the broken, disused stile. Turn right onto the tarmac drive and follow it for almost half a mile to the junction with Sandy Cross Lane. Turn left and walk to the main road. Cross carefully and trot down the steps. Then wander downhill to rejoin the Cuckoo Trail at the Old Ghyll Road junction, hopefully looking reassuringly familiar. Turn right and head north. Suburbia returns suddenly as the back gardens of Heathfield populate all views. Back at the car park it was time to reflect… “This was time well spent, such lovely surroundings, I found a new kind of love,” smiled Louise, “…walking around Heathfield!” l

Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. ADVERTISING FEATURE

The Heathfield Tavern recently opened under the new ownership of local family run pub group Ridley Inns. Adele Trathan paid them a visit to find out more about this exciting new venture

THE HEART OF

Heathfield U

nless you are an ostrich and have your head in the sand, it won’t surprise anyone to hear that most public houses up and down the country haven’t had an easy time of things for many years. So, it’s always great to hear some good news regarding local pubs! Well, you heard it here, The Heathfield Tavern has been taken on by the thriving local family run business - Ridley Inns. The Ridley family established themselves at The Cock near Ringmer, and have built an enviable reputation for quality food and drink that attracts people from all around the area. Then nearly five years ago they took on a second pub and became proud owners of The Highlands Inn in Uckfield. This landmark pub had closed after years of unreliable management but after substantial investment they breathed new life into the establishment. Family run and family friendly, the menu offers traditional pub food with seasonal specials menu and is renowned for consistently delivering excellent food at affordable prices. Along with Harvey’s beers, guest ales and lagers, customers can also enjoy a wide range of gins, spirits and highly drinkable fine wines. Now they are embracing the winning formula they have built, and have expanded again by taking on another local pub that had sadly closed its doors last year. The Heathfield

Tavern (formerly known as The Prince of Wales) is the only public house near the centre of the lovely market town of Heathfield and they want to bring it alive again for locals and visitors alike. Using their skills of management and giving the same attention to detail, by providing good quality food and delivering consistent service, it is sure to be a success. When I visited on the first weekend of opening I found a warm and welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff and an inviting bar and restaurant. A central wood burning stove separates the bar and restaurant areas and the kitchen is open view to the restaurant which means you know your food is being freshly prepared and cooked – right in front of you! As with the sister pubs, the menu offers delicious, high quality food to suit all tastes and dietary requirements, all home-made and locally sourced. Whilst I was there some very tasty looking ‘pies of the day’ were being

prepared and other offerings on the menu include favourites such as ‘Sussex smokie’ and beer battered fish and chips as well as the specials menu which changes regularly to offer seasonal variety. The grill menu tempts you with a selection of steaks and burgers including a ‘Funky Fungi’ with portabello mushroom and stilton or ‘Texan’ with Monterey jack cheese, BBQ sauce and onion rings. Sunday of course, is all about the classic roasts which Ridley Inns are well known for, succulent meats with all the trimmings and seasonal vegetables and at £12.50 great value too for such quality food. Although of course, they do offer a variety of other options for all diners including vegetarian and vegan. This winning family formula has bucked the national trend by proving success and growth is possible in the pub industry by focussing on delivering what customers want. Why not pop along and enjoy a warm welcome, great hospitality and delicious food in one of Ridley Inns? l The Heathfield Tavern, Station road, Heathfield TN21 8DR

PERSIAN

Jewelled Rice

Dramatic in its brilliant colours from saffron, barberries and pistachios, this elegant Persian jewelled rice can be served as a main course with a simple roast chicken, or served as a side dish. Barberries, once used in cooking in medieval England, are available from Iranian food shops, where they are sold dried and known as zereshk. They have a very tart flavour and need de-stemming and rinsing before using. This dish can also be served cold SERVES

10

INGREDIENTS 75g (10oz) basmati rice 18 -20 saffron threads 1 tblsp boiling water 1 rounded tsp cardamom pods 1 rounded tsp coriander seeds 40mls (1 1/2 floz) olive oil 25g (1oz) barberries 50g (2oz) dried cranberries 100g (4oz) raisins 50g (2oz) pistachio nuts, peeled Salt & freshly ground black pepper

METHOD Wash the rice in several changes of cold water and drain well. Mix the saffron with the boiling water and leave to stand for 10 minutes.

1

Add the rice to a large pan of salted 2 boiling water with the cardamom and coriander. Bring it back to the boil

and boil for 8-10 minutes, when the rice should be soft on the outside but still firm in the centre. Drain in a colander.

Put the oil in a pan, add the 3 barberries, cranberries, raisins and pistachios over a medium heat and

saute for 1 minute to plump up the fruits. Stir in the rice along with the saffon liquid, season well and mix until piping hot. Serve. Advance preparation: only if serving cold, make the jewelled rice up to 1 day before, cover and chill. Do not reheat cooked rice or freeze.

MONEY MATTERS

Surviving Tax Return January Robin Stevenson and his fellow accountants have survived tax return January, but who will heed their advice and get theirs in early next year?

A

s with most accountancy firms we have emerged from an extremely busy January. The reason January is so very busy is that since the introduction of self-assessment in 1996/97 the deadline for submitting tax returns to HMRC is 31 January, meaning long hours in the office and a rush to get everything finished and filed on time. Of course, we are prepared and fully expect a large volume of work in that period and we were almost all finished before deadline, which is somewhat better than some of the stories I’ve heard from other accountants. The worse of which seems to have been an accountant driving through the snow at 10pm on deadline day in order for the client to approve their tax return so it can be filed before midnight. I’m reminded of the football stories of desperate scrambles to get player transfers processed in time before the transfer window closes – mind you, I should imagine football agents get paid considerably more than tax accountants, so my sympathy only goes so far! Being accountants, we’re interested in numbers and I always look forward to HMRC releasing the tax return

filing figures. This year’s didn’t disappoint. Seemingly a record high of 93.68% of tax returns were filed before the deadline ended, with 700,000 being filed on the last day just beating the deadline. We contributed 139 to that figure which may seem a lot but maybe not when you consider that we accepted 18 new tax return clients on that last day and managed to prepare and file their tax returns before our tax team finally celebrated filing the last tax return and calling it a night at 7:45pm on 31 January. In previous years I’ve kept my own self assessment tax return back and made sure it was the last return we filed each year, a kind of signing off gesture if you like, but this year was different as I followed my own advice and filed it earlier in the week. My advice is not to wait until the last week, but actually file the return as soon as possible; not only does this help ease the pressure on the poor accountant in January but it could also prevent you paying too much tax. There were a number of tax return clients who provided their information in January and were due a tax refund, if we had received that information earlier then we could have claimed back that refund earlier and maybe even prevented too much tax being paid in the first place! Nevertheless, we accept that most people aren’t like us tax accountants, their world doesn’t revolve around tax legislation and tax returns like ours does. So, whilst we get excited about a new development in income tax or capital gains tax, normal people see their tax return as a chore and human nature will tend for chores to be dealt with at the last possible moment. This means that while we may ask, and sometimes badger, for information earlier in the year we know January will be ‘Tax Return January’ and we look forward to that moment when the last tax return is filed, we receive back HMRC’s acknowledgement, switch off the computer and lock the door before driving home with the satisfaction of a job well done. l
