HAIR REPLACEMENT FOR HAIR LOSS Is your confidence affected by Alopecia, Baldness, Thinning Hair and Trichollotimania? Regain your confidence – Hair Loss doesn’t have to be a problem! Testimonial: “Thinning hair is no joke, as anyone who has suffered this confidence-buster will confirm – it is demeaning, plays havoc with your self-esteem and costs a fortune in ‘remedies’ that are full of promises but fail to deliver. I was in despair until I found a specialist in London who offered a hair-replacement solution which didn’t require a lottery-win to make it affordable. So, I signed up and within a couple of months began to experience a return to my former self. But, after a while my husband, who did the driving, began to shed a few hairs himself as he braved the M25 and south London for my monthly ‘fix’ – we then moved to Eastbourne, and I soon realised that the increased distance was to be the kiss of death for my solution. Driving through Eastbourne town last year, my husband exclaimed excitedly, “There’s a Hair Replacement Studio!” He stopped the car, I took the phone number, and wasted no time in making the call. I’ve never looked back. After a comprehensive consultation, Oscar set me up with my first appointment at which all my problems disappeared. I now have a full head of totally undetectable real hair which Oscar ‘doctors’ every six weeks or so, I did not have to win the lottery to pay for it, and I can drive myself there as it’s so local. My husband is ecstatic, my confidence is For a full consultation on how Oscars Hair and Beauty can help call: restored and my hair looks lovely (even if I say so myself!) 1066 PART 2 BATTLE

With significant historical importance the charming market town of Battle is a captivating place to visit for holiday goers and locals alike

T

he picturesque East Sussex town of Battle will for ever be associated with the defeat of Saxon King Harold by William the Conqueror in 1066. At its heart sits Battle Abbey, erected by William I in 1070 both as a commemoration of his victory and as a penance ordered by Pope Alexander II for the heavy loss of life during the Norman Invasion. Battle has subsequently spread beyond the Abbey walls and today offers a diverse mix of attractions. The Abbey still forms the centrepiece of a bustling market town and popular tourist destination – featuring both Georgian and medieval cottages intermingled with a variety of interesting galleries, shops, restaurants,

historic pubs and tea-rooms designed to blend in with the town’s traditional architecture. Nestled within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Battle is also the centre point of the thirty-mile 1066 Country Walk between Pevensey Castle and the ancient town of Rye. The local Battel Bonfire Boyes is believed to be the oldest of the Sussex Bonfire Societies. In the seventeenth century Battle developed a reputation for the production of high quality gunpowder. The town’s first gunpowder mill was built in 1676 on land owned by the

The heavily-wooded countryside round Battle provided timber for Navy shipyards such as Portsmouth and Chatham, as well as fuel for the production of cannons, cannonballs and gunpowder. THE EXTERIOR

The warm wooden exterior made from Russian Larch and floor to ceiling glass blends in beautifully within the spectacular landscape and lake. Looking across the lake you can see a whole variety of trees and wildlife such as swans, geese, heron and coot. Wooden decking runs the whole length of the balcony. It is slightly cooler in tone to the house itself and the pattern is laid in a plank like fashion so there is subtle differences to both sections of the house. A generously shaped all-weather lounger in a straw colored rattan is a simple yet luxurious finish to the look.

C

Caroline and Robert Diamond had always wanted a country escape. “Life in London was starting to feel so rushed,” says Caroline. “Both of us have quite demanding jobs and felt we never seemed to have enough quality time with the children or time to ourselves.” So, when two friends of theirs recommended that they take a look at the 850 acre Claydon Pike estate in Gloucestershire in 2013, they instantly fell in love with its freshwater lakes, woodland and stunning beauty. The fact that it was only ninety minutes out of London felt so accessible that they

Use of texture for me is just as critical as colour. I’ve added areas of tactile wallpaper to break up the expanse of wall, especially in the living space

snapped up the opportunity to buy a plot in an instant. The houses there are made predominantly from glass and sustainable Russian Larch, which ages naturally over years. The project developers working on the estate have kept the look of each house similar in appearance and structure so they blend within the environment and lakes. Trees and shrubs are so well placed that each house has complete privacy and uninterrupted views across the lake. And as the houses are only built on one side of each lake there is a great sense of privacy for each property. “It was very appealing for us to be able to choose a plot of land beside one of the four lakes and work with the team of architects and designers. We customised the plans so they suited our family lifestyle,” says Caroline. “I wanted our retreat to feel very different in shape and size

A palette of mellow grey and brown is mixed with matt black to give the living area a sophisticated appearance. Caroline has added splashes of yellow and turquoise in the accessories to warm up the greys and a few key pieces of furniture in off-white add freshness and prevent it looking too dark. Caroline’s playfulness with textures and colour is really prominent in the seating area of the living space. The combination of warm tones in the wallpaper, bold golden yellow in the chair and the dynamic matt black wood burner all work so well together because of the contrasting elements. Caroline has kept the wood theme running throughout the house; a solid wood chair made from a whole tree trunk sits next to the generously sized wood burner filled with neatly stacked logs around its base. Both the logs and the chair give off a rich warm glow against the backdrop of mellow grey and brown walls. A shelving unit backed with mirrors adds yet another wonderful texture to the room scheme. A display of personal as well as quirky accessories dotted amongst the shelves adds character and personality. The bottom of the unit is fitted with doors to store family clutter out of sight. The family room runs the whole length of the ground floor and is divided into three sections, each of which has been subtly divided up into designated areas. The sofa layout is used as a division to the living room, tongue and groove flooring divides the dining section and a food prep and breakfast bar and island designates the kitchen area. The cool grey walls bind the whole room together and keep the continuity of the overall look.

to our Richmond house, which has smaller rooms and traditional Victorian features,” says Caroline. With this in mind the spaces in the retreat were opened up to give the rooms a more sociable feel and also to showcase the incredible view. Creating an open-plan living space down stairs meant the Diamonds could be in one room together doing things independently or interacting together as a family. Caroline also added an extra floor for the master bedroom with en suite bathroom, which almost feels like a private apartment separate from the main house. Balconies the whole length of the house were also added on the ground and upper floor so

FAMILY ROOM - DINING AREA

The dark blue wall and seating area as well as the giant wire lamp anchor the whole dining section together in the living space. A modern handmade solid oak wood table has been placed across the width of the room giving plenty of room to move around the table and traditional country style chairs add a modern country twist to the look.

FAMILY ROOM – KITCHEN AREA Caroline has kept her self designed kitchen layout very simple in style and free of clutter as it’s on show to the rest of the large living area. A streamlined wall of cupboards house tableware, linen and food. The long breakfast bar has seating at the front and a food prep and cooking section at the back making it a very practical and sociable space. Although the kitchen design is simple, Caroline has added tactile work surfaces and reflective tiles to give the streamlined cupboards and work areas substance and interest. The breakfast bar and cooking area means that cooking can be done while socialising with family and friends. Cupboards are designed to fit various pots and pans and there’s a good-sized work surface, which makes everything very easy and convenient to prep and cook.

you can walk right out over the lake. The whole build took seven months in total to complete, assembled in a factory in Slovenia and then brought over to the UK to be completed. Caroline used her interior design expertise to create different zones in the larger open-plan rooms, such as the master bedroom and en suite bathroom, by using richly patterned feature wallpaper. She also used well-planed furniture layouts and units to divide up each section of the living space. Some key furniture pieces with unusual features have been added throughout her home to create character and personality, although on the whole the look is pared back, simple and elegant. For Caroline less is more. “I never like to over clutter a home with lots of soft furnishings and furniture as it gives no space to breath, and with my four children running around it’s just not practical. I love well designed furniture and soft furnishings but in smaller amounts so you can enjoy them and allow them to shine in their own right.” FAMILY ROOM A beautiful one-off circular table sits alongside the expanse of windows facing out onto the lake. Caroline likes to buy a few key furniture pieces for each room to break up the simple lines of the living space as well as allowing each piece to be a focal point in the room.

MASTER BEDROOM

The bedroom is minimally designed but decorative and special in its look. An elegant turquoise velvet bed and delicate cloud wallpaper are the key focal points of the room with everything else blending harmoniously within the room. The bedroom feels like an apartment in its own right set on the top floor with its own decked balcony.

The en suite bedroom on the top floor is my favourite room. Its windows have incredible far reaching views across the lakes

ENSUITE BATHROOM An eye catching tree wallpaper has been hung on one wall in the bathroom to give the room a unique appearance. It gives the modern bath and sink unit an organic finish and prevents it looking too clinical. The large mirror above the sink unit reflects the elegant tree wallpaper on the opposite wall and also adds gleam and shine to the room. The freestanding double sink unit is neat and compact, the sinks echoing the shape of the bath and the grey storage unit below is functional and minimal in style. A large frosted glass window with a tree image is set next to the bath for privacy.

MASTER BEDROOM

Texture binds the whole look together to make her home feel relaxed and comfortable. Now the work is predominantly finished the family like to spend as much time as possible in their country home. “It’s the best thing we’ve ever done buying this house. We wanted a place in the country where our four children, Max, Joel, Zac and Skyla could play freely in a ‘Swallows and Amazons’ style,” says Caroline. It’s such a safe environment Caroline lets

Caroline’s created a cosy seating area in the master bedroom with modular seating running across the back of the room. The back wall is covered in limed oak planking which gives a lovely warm feel to the room and she’s added a shaggy grey rug for extra comfort. Plum and turquoise velvet cushions and sheepskins make the seating area feel warm and inviting especially in the colder months.

And unlike in their rushed and busy London life, Caroline and Robert get time to exercise or use the luxurious estate facilities such as the newly open spa or simply chill out on the decked balcony. “Living by the lake is so special,” says Caroline. “Waking up to the mist in the morning, feeding the swans and the ducks at breakfast, watching the fish jump out of the water during the day and the sun set over the lake in the evening – what more could you ask for?” l Photos: Polly Eltes/Narratives Text: Sian Williams/Narratives

GUEST BEDROOM Caroline’s keen eye for unique furniture such as the retro look writing desk gives the guest bedroom an interesting focal point. The chair she’s chosen is influenced by a similar era to the desks design; the rush seat tying in with the colour of the wooden desk.

HEATING

All Fired

Up

From the luxury of our centrally heated homes it is hard to imagine how our ancestors managed to keep warm and cosy during the cold winter months. Lisa de Silva takes a look at past methods used to keep us warm, along with their influence on modern day trends

I

nterestingly the Latin word for hearth is ‘focus’ because in days of old, a fire was the central feature of any home. In fact, long before language had evolved, a fire for warmth and cooking was essential to man’s survival. This basic heat source was given a sophisticated spin by the Romans who developed hypocaust-heating systems. This method pumped heated air into open spaces beneath buildings, acting as an early version of underfloor heating, which is still a fashionable choice for contemporary homes today. Yet when the Romans left our shores in AD 410, we reverted back to living in smoky mud huts. Living amidst the grime and smoke must have been awful, despite the addition of a central hole in the roof for the smog to escape. Still, life continued like this for

hundreds of years until the Normans conceived the chimney. This development finally meant that in 14th century Europe the hearth no longer had to occupy the centre of the

room, but could be moved against a wall with a chimney stack above it. Having said that, it still took around 200 years for the chimney to catch on, but by the 16th century they were more commonplace, as was the use of coal as a source of heat energy. The next major development came in the 18th century with the invention of stove heating. In 1742, in colonial America, Benjamin Franklin created a metal-lined fireplace, The Franklin Stove, which stood in the middle of the room. This provided more heat and produced less smoke than an open fireplace. What’s more it used less wood, with the cast iron furnace

radiating heat throughout the room long after the fire itself had gone out. Say hello to the increasingly popular modern day wood burning stove. However, it wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that central heating became a practical reality. With steam power heralded as the miracle of the age, fires were replaced by boilers which pushed steam or hot water through a series of enormous pipes which radiated heat. The pipes

took up an enormous amount of space, but in 1857, the first radiator was invented in Russia, a development which helped this type of hot water heating system to flourish. Shortly after this in 1883, Thomas Edison invented the first electric heater. So, we now had a choice of open fires, stove heating, hot water central heating or electric heating. Despite this, uptake was slow, possibly owing to the huge costs involved in setting up a heating system. In fact, modern day central heating really only became a ‘must have’ as recently as the 1970s and today only around 7% of UK homes no longer have it.

Modern day central heating really only became a ‘must have’ as recently as the 1970s Although the initial trend was to block up the old Georgian and Victorian fireplaces, this has since been reversed, with many homes reviving these beauties, to once again become the focal point of the room. Today, environmental concerns have led to more renewable heat sources being used to power our heating systems, such

as solar, air and ground source heat pumps, alongside the more usual heat sources of oil, gas and electricity. Moreover, advances in technology have led to the development of smart heating allowing us to be both energy and cost efficient when heating our homes. Smart radiator valves can be controlled from a mobile phone to turn heat on and off in individual rooms, while smart thermostats learn temperature preferences and adapt to your lifestyle, switching off heat when you leave for work and creating the ideal temperature for your return. Weekly profiles of heat consumption can be monitored to maximise energy savings and cost efficiency. What would our ancestors think? l

LOCAL WALK

As the season starts to turn, Robert Veitch set out from Ringmer on a walk to explore the countryside and contours south of the village

RINGMER WALK

S

etting sail from the Anchor Field car park turn left towards the shops and walk to the end of the road. Turn left into Springett Avenue and walk south towards the distant Cliffe Hill. Fifty metres beyond Mill Road turn right into Sadlers Way. It’s a pleasant meander through the suburbs of Ringmer. Turn right into Middleham Close and aim for the hammerhead, where a short path on the left leads to Gote Lane. Turn right and walk carefully for 50m because there is no pavement. At the end of Gote Lane, cross at the junction, to the cycleway opposite. Follow the cycleway for just over half a mile. It’s a joyous, traffic free walk along a decent, safe surface, with lovely views of the countryside. The only downside is the constant drone of passing vehicles. Ever so slightly, the route gains height, a foretaste of what’s to come. Just past the lay-by is a wooden five-bar gate and after that, a small kissing gate. Once through the kissing gate, bear right, and then right again at the Malling Down Nature Reserve information board. The path opens up and continues for about 350m before there’s a sharp left hand bend (under

The child in me half expected to see Camberwick Green’s modern day equivalent of Windy Miller emerge from the small door the powerlines), the walk turning 180° on itself. There’s a stock proof fence alongside, on the right. After almost 200m pass through the gate on the right, after which the gradient ramps up significantly. Once through the narrow gully keep left, and let the path guide you uphill. Inexorably, it finds the easiest route to the summit via small steps in the chalk. The rusted barbed wire fence to the left is more a

symbolic than physical barrier to the dangers of the steep-sided Bridgwick Pit. All paths coalesce at the same summit, at the same small gate, at the top of Malling Down. Walk towards the golf course, the path following the perimeter of the fence. Terraces line the contours of the Downs, remnants of the farming that took place here millennia ago. Once through a short section of hawthorn and blackberry the view to the east opens up. As the path leaves the golf course boundary there’s a bench away to the left. It’s worthwhile sitting down to pause for a few moments, to take in the views from ‘John Craig’s Bench’ – the Heathfield transmitters, Mayfield, Crowborough and Ashdown Forest being high points on the northern horizon. Back on the path, it leads to a metal five-bar gate and shortly after to a fingerpost. Bear left here, passing behind and above a small wood, mostly populated by hawthorn and sycamore. The path drops away downhill towards a concrete lined dew pond and a stile just after. The stile is marked ‘Monday Group’ and over the other side is the

rough surface of Week Lane. Follow Week Lane all the way to the road. Cross safely, by-passing the redundant ivy covered stile. The path emerges onto Mill Plain at the base of what is ‘the elephant in the room’ throughout this walk… The 70m high Glyndebourne wind turbine. The child in me half expected to see Camberwick Green’s modern day equivalent of Windy Miller emerge from the small door at the base, supping from a bottle of cider. The remains of the Ringmer Postmill (which collapsed in 1925) are adjacent to the path. Once through the kissing gate on the left, follow the field perimeter, downhill and around the boundary, then downhill more steeply between the parallel lines of fencing to another kissing gate. The route passes under power lines, between posts, through a pair of kissing gates kissing, then across a flat paddock to another kissing gate and a little bridge. Wander towards the homes and the Union Jack (if the flag is flying), arriving back in Magnet.pdf suburbia by a red telephone box. Turn right and follow the path for just over 300m before turning left into Shepherds Way. Then take the third left into Anchor Field. From here it’s 200m back to the car park, from whence you set sail almost two hours previously. l

Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. PETS

It’s a Dog’s Life Rolo the Boarder Terrier tries out some new transport this month – a royal blue convertible no less!

I

might be a dog, but transport issues concern me too. We’ve got road works locally and it took ‘Her Indoors’ fifteen minutes to get out of our village to take me for a check-up at the Vet’s yesterday. As well as the moaning, I also had to put up with her taste in music as she whiled away the time. It’s just as well I suffer from senior deafness, that’s all I’m saying, particularly when she starts singing along.

And just don’t get me started on pot holes… The reliable running of the trains is also a concern as both my Juniors are in London and come home for visits. It’s been a difficult time on the railways and I know ‘Her Indoors’ braces herself and

packs supplies, when she occasionally has to use the train for work. I’ve always favoured four legs myself and although it’s not quick over long distances, it has always been dependable. However, as with all forms of transport, age hinders reliability. I suffer from arthritis, which is better during the hot weather, but which starts to trouble me when the temperature drops. This basically means that I cannot manage long walks any more, and, if the weather isn’t favourable, I just give ‘Her Indoors’ my best ‘you’ve got to be kidding’ look, and stay at home in the warm and dry.

It is great and means I have visited parts of the village I haven’t seen for years ‘Her Indoors’, who probably engages with social media more than is good for her, discovered a kind of doggy back pack, a bit like a rucksack, for carrying small dogs, and she bought one for me. I love it. I have a great view and, even better, ‘Her Indoors’ can’t see what I’m up to. When we went on a walk with a group of fellow Border Terriers and their owners, she didn’t realise, at the time, how many people were giving me treats. She thought the reason I was feeling heavier was due to tiredness on her behalf, until she was enlightened by the photographic evidence posted on-line later. Anyway, the latest transport innovation for me is a Border buggy. Strictly speaking, these are available for any small or medium dog who is very young, ill, injured, elderly or otherwise incapacitated. It is like a pushchair and mine is in a rather fetching shade of royal blue. This is the same colour as ‘Her Indoors’ Mini, and mine is also a convertible so I can have the wind blowing through my ears too. To be honest, my buggy’s a bit under-powered and occasionally intermittent, when ‘Her Indoors’ stops to chat, but it is otherwise great and means I have visited parts of the village I haven’t seen for years. It also means that I can supervise the apprentice, Teddy, when he is out on his longer walks, and give him helpful tips on who to bark at. ENVIRONMENT

The skies are a buzz this time of year with stunning spectacles of swallows migrating, and murmurations of starlings making magnificent patterns high above. Ruth Lawrence reveals their wandering ways

SAFE JOURNEY T

his summer, I’ve watched swallows soar and hunt from high on the downs, alongside rivers to the fields outside the window almost every day and now that they’ve gone I feel their absence keenly. Nothing marks the start of Autumn more than their disappearance to warmer climates; their time in this country has seen them raise at least one brood, sometimes two and perhaps even a third. Watching them dive and wheel in early evening has been one of summer’s greatest pleasures and now I imagine them halfway to their winter grounds in South Africa and Namibia. It takes them three weeks to cover about two hundred miles a day; they fly in daylight and roost in huge flocks in regular stopover spots in reed beds. They fly low and hunt on the wing; I picture those same individuals I saw swooping after their prey now diving across a very different landscape, following the sun. One species escape is another

species destination; starlings are now appearing after their summer spent breeding in Eastern Europe, although this bird is known as a partial migrant. The starlings that breed in this country tend to stay here and so the extra ones we see here in winter have come here to avoid that freezing Eastern European weather. They mostly travel at night,

taking advantage of the cooler air and so they lose less energy from flapping and less water through evaporation. Predators are also less likely after dark. Passage migrants such as black terns use the UK like a service station, stopping off here on a long journey south or north, taking a few weeks in spring and autumn to rest and eat before moving on. While the swallows consider our winters too cold, fieldfares, redwings and Bewicks and Whooper swans find our winters mild and migrate here from the north and east in search of easier food and better weather. Even some robins migrate; although most don’t move more than a few kilometres, some, mostly females, leave the UK for as far afield as Spain or Portugal before winter arrives. Although winter sees the disappearance and arrival of different species, it helps to maintain a connection with absent birds to know where they go during the darker months. It’s simple to keep track of any species using information online; I recently discovered a site based in South Africa which details the gathering flocks of swallows that winter there, perhaps containing some of the very same birds that filled my summer with the whirring of small blue black wings in sunlight. l

BLOOMING TIMES

W

ild tulips occur over a vast range that stretches all the way from Afghanistan to Russia. Medieval explorers reported home to incredulous wide-eyed Europeans of the astonishing flowers they had seen in the mountains of Turkey, Iran and Iraq, and when tulips first arrived on Dutch shores in the 1590s, they created a sensation. Tulip addicts gambled away fortunes. A few became rich – most did not. Overcome by greed and a mania for those musthave blooms, they lost their homes, businesses and reputations. Tulip bulbs tolerate the cold – what kills them is waterlogging. All garden tulips originate from those wild ‘species’ forms that are found in alpine meadows and mountainous regions; where winters are harsh but relatively dry. Come spring, the moisture from melting snow triggers the plants into growth. The meltwater nourishes the bulbs, but quickly drains away through gravelly soil. Our Wealden clay does the

exact opposite; holding rainwater and becoming ever-more sodden throughout winter. This is why many garden tulips never appear in spring – the bulbs have simply rotted away. You could easily be excused for giving up on tulips and I sometimes wonder if it would be cheaper to bury £20 notes, but there are a few tips that make the life of a tulip maniac a little more bearable. Firstly, don’t even consider planting tulips into soil that you know to be wringing wet in winter. You can’t change the situation, so don’t attempt the impossible – it’ll only make you miserable! Rockeries, also flower beds situated Tulips can be You could easily be excused close to a building planted late. As for giving up on tulips and I or wall will be drier long as you store sometimes wonder if it would them in cool, (masonry absorbs moisture from soil), be cheaper to bury £20 notes dry conditions, and tulips will enjoy delaying planting these conditions until November, or better. A layer of grit added to planting even December will be fine. Patio pots, holes will help prevent rainwater from with their free-draining soil are perfect ‘pooling’ around precious bulbs. for tulips and wallflowers enjoy drier soil too, so combine them for stunning, fragrant displays. Some species of tulips are forgiving of our climate and can make extremely long-lived colonies. They are early risers, flowering from mid-February onwards and their nectar-rich blooms provide a welcome breakfast for emerging bees. If you visit a stately home in springtime and find yourself marvelling at a vast swathe of mauve crocus-shaped little tulips toughing it out in rough grass, they’re probably ‘bakeri’ – a species that positively thrives in the UK. There’s no need to Only a lunatic would plant tulips in heavy Wealden clay. sell off your chattels and await the call to the debtors prison. BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest

THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ

NO SECOND CHANCE

ARK ANGEL

This is the true story of a Slovakian Jew, Lale, incarcerated in Birkenau and Auschwitz, and what he has to do to survive. Those who helped the Nazis in any way were regarded as collaborators, even if they had little choice about what they did, so you have no idea what will happen to Lale if he manages to survive. He is the man who tattoos newcomers, after an inmate has been tattooed the guards only identify internees by their numbers, not their names. It’s a dehumanising process. Lale is kept

Dr Marc Siedman wakes up in hospital, having been in a coma for ten days, only to discover that his wife has been murdered and his baby daughter Tara has been kidnapped. Suspecting the husband/father is always the first line of enquiry, but gradually other suspects emerge and Marc starts to investigate what actually happened, and whether Tara is indeed still alive. Has she been kidnapped or trafficked – then murdered as well? When a ransom demand comes, four million dollars of

This is the sixth in the 11-book series about Alex Rider, a teenage boy who is employed by MI6, the CIA and other spy organisations to reach the parts adults can’t. In this book, Alex – recovering in a private hospital from a bullet-wound, finds himself in the next room to another boy, Paul, who is the son of a very wealthy man with a dubious past. Before long Paul is the target of a kidnap attempt and Alex is in the thick of it, dodging bullets, scuba diving, living on his wits, his

Continual exposure to the unthinkable hardens some people for good apart from the rest, and he tries to use his privileged position to buy food and medicines for those in need. He falls in love with a young woman, Gita, and their relationship develops throughout the book. Some appalling incidents and ghastly atrocities are described, but in a sensitive way. Every so often your heart is in your mouth and little humanity is shown by the guards, even when they are dealing with children. It is a good example of how continual exposure to the unthinkable hardens some people for good, whilst others retain their principles There are a lot of good books about the Holocaust, and this is one of them. 54 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2018

by Harlan Coben

Other suspects emerge and Marc starts to investigate what actually happened Marc’s ex father-in-law’s money are spent in attempting to get Tara back. Rachel, Marc’s former girlfriend and ex-FBI agent, also becomes involved as, after all, Marc is an ordinary guy with no special ops training! I had no idea how this was going to end, and it’s so well-written and fast-paced that you keep turning the pages until you get to the end – which isn’t what you expect, with twists galore. The plot is excellent, and doesn’t lose you in reams of infuriating detail. Some of the characters are truly terrifying with backgrounds to explain their behaviour. A very engrossing read.

by Anthony Horowitz

Alex is in the thick of it, dodging bullets, scuba diving and living on his wits remarkably robust constitution and delivering dry one-liners. He can’t keep away from trouble, and although seems reluctant now and again he always acquiesces in the end. It’s good escapist stuff, very well-written, and will appeal to those who like a fast-paced read. It’s all totally impossible, but every so often Alex dredges up a piece of useful information he’s picked up in a physics lesson, so there are hints that perhaps it’s best to pay attention in class. Some of the detail is fairly gruesome, but in an age when zombie books are regulation reading for teenagers, it’s comparatively mild.

Care for Couples at The Laurels

A

significant number of elderly people who need to go into a care home are currently living with their spouse and very often the thought of being separated from their partner can be heart breaking. Frequently a partner is remaining in the family home and perhaps feeling guilty that they can no longer provide the care their companion needs. Sometimes both partners are in need of care and yet their needs are very different, again leading to them being separated at this time. In order to address the issue of couples with different care needs, The Laurels Nursing Home in Hastings aims to specifically support couples who want to stay together. The home has now introduced a new luxury suite alongside its 50 bedrooms in a homely environment. The suite provides every home comfort including smart TV with video

stream and modern music system with the added benefit of 24 hour care. The spacious room offers a seating area with views to the garden through a Juliette balcony, an en-suite and, most importantly, the opportunity for couples to be together. “This valued addition to our accommodation can be adapted to support single or double occupation either for respite care or on a permanent basis,” Sally Bossom from The Laurels told us. “We welcome visitors and would love to show you what we have to offer at The Laurels.” From landscaped gardens with a soothing water feature to tastefully decorated rooms, a cinema room and the all-important home cooked meals, The Laurels is certainly worth visiting if you are thinking of the next stage in life for yourself or your loved ones. October sees a whole month of events to enjoy in celebration of Older People’s Day. Sara Whatley gives you an overview of the events available, taken from the fully packed ‘Full of Life’ events programme

O

nce again, in 2018, East Sussex Seniors along with East Sussex County Council and Public Health will be celebrating Older People’s Day across East Sussex, with events held throughout October. This will be the 11th year that we have marked and recognised publicly the achievements and contributions that older people make to society.

60 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2018

As in previous years, a wide variety of events are being organised and hosted by older volunteers, many of which are free or very low cost for you to take part in. Feel free to bring along family and friends, everyone is welcome. Don’t worry about going to events on your own as you will often meet up with new people and the event holders are ready to welcome you. Events are held all over East Sussex in the areas of Lewes, Wealden and Rother and you can find a huge range of activities to get involved in. Fancy getting sporty? Try some walking

oleen currently works for the Joint Community Rehabilitation Service, sometimes referred to as JCR. The service, provided jointly by East Sussex County Council and the NHS, is a short-term re-ablement service designed with the aim of reducing dependency and promoting independence. The service is available to clients for up to six weeks and most often clients regain their independence in less time than this. A normal day for most support workers consists of a series of appointments with different clients over the course of a six-hour shift, starting either at 7am or 4pm. Clients are enrolled on to this free service via referrals from a hospital or their GP. Clients might have suffered a stroke, had a hip replacement, be recovering from pneumonia, amongst many other types of referral. CARE MONTH

Would You Care

TO VOLUNTEER?

A Hastings-based charity which supports unpaid carers throughout East Sussex is looking for people to join their team of volunteers

T

he aim of the Association of Carers is to give carers some time to themselves, while a volunteer keeps a loved one company in their home. Volunteers might spend their time chatting over tea, playing games, or reading with their charge, or they may simply sit with a person who is asleep, ensuring they are kept safe. Volunteers can also teach carers basic computer skills, enabling them to do online shopping or banking, or keep in touch with family. Seemingly simple tasks that can make a carers life a bit easier. The charity also offers telephone support services, giving carers the chance to discuss their caring role in confidence with a supportive listener. This role is carried out from a volunteer’s own home. The level of need is fully assessed by the charity and, in advance of a volunteer taking on a new role, they would visit the carer and the caredfor person with one of the charity’s representatives, to ensure a perfect match. A full induction is offered to volunteers, and there is on-going support and training opportunities, such as Safeguarding, First Aid, Listening Skills and more. Jane Caley, who works for the charity, says that volunteers would ideally

64 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2018

commit regular time for a minimum of one year. This enables carers, volunteers and the person being cared for the chance to settle into a routine and build strong relationships. However, even if you couldn’t commit for this long, they would still love to hear from you. Jane said, “Anyone over 18 is invited to volunteer with us. A lot of our volunteers are slightly older. Many are retired, or people who have themselves been in caring roles. It would be fantastic to recruit some younger people, and provide an opportunity to build

rewarding intergenerational relationships.” The weekly time commitment is fairly low level – as little as 30 minutes a week – and it is possible to be flexible and work around people’s lives. “We totally understand that work and family life can make finding time to volunteer difficult,” Jane says, “but perhaps people who work part-time would be interested, or parents whose children are at school during the day.” Many of the people being cared for have varying degrees of progression through disease, others might have dementia. All of them find the experience of spending time with their regular volunteer an enriching one, and the support makes a huge difference to carers. Volunteers are not required to carry out any personal care, such as toileting tasks for example - it is simply about providing company and keeping the cared-for person safe. Carers who need support are either referred by professionals or are able to approach the charity directly. If you are interested in volunteering or to find out more information you can learn more at www.associationofcarers. org.uk or call 01424 722309. l

Lions members do whatever is needed to help their local communities. They make friends everywhere and help children who are in need, people who don’t have enough to eat and others that they may never meet. Leading projects, networking and having fun; you can do all of this and more as a Lions Club member. The members perform volunteer work to improve their community and to also help others around the world. There are many Lions Clubs to choose from in East Sussex including Adur East, Battle Villages, Brighton, Crowborough, Hastings, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford to name but a few. Graham Parish a Lions Club member for over 30 years said, “You see the joy in people’s hearts and they say thank you and the smile of a child. It’s those things that make you realise you’ve done something for your community”. We welcome new members from all walks of life - why not have a new interest; one that you can enjoy and involve other members of your family? BODY BUZZ

SOME LIKE IT Join Sasha Kanal on the mat as she looks at the restorative practice of Hot Yoga, the perfect warming exercise for body and soul as autumn sets in

ot Yoga has become something of a trend in the UK over the past 10-15 years. While the jury is still out on whether the high temperatures are of any real benefit, there’s no denying that yoga in general offers real, sustained health benefits to those partaking. The 5,000 year old tradition has come a long way from its sacred origins in India and now in 2018, every town and gym in Britain has a yoga studio with varying types on offer from beginners to advanced classes. Developed in the 1970s, Hot Yoga is an umbrella term for

There’s no denying that yoga in general offers real, sustained health benefits any type of yoga practiced in a heated atmosphere. Ideally for it to be called ‘Hot Yoga’ it should be practised in a room with a temperature of between 32-40 degrees centigrade and a humid atmosphere, making it a different experience to your normal workout. A word of warning however; there may be a risk of heat intolerance and over stretching muscles for those that are unfit or beginners. Make the teacher aware if you are new or have any health concerns or existing injuries. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Heart Health Your heart benefits a great deal from practising yoga of any kind, although scientific evidence is limited in this research. However, the combination of gentle exercise,

1

68 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2018

which strengthens muscles, breathing deeply and de-stressing with relaxation and meditation are all winners for maintaining a healthy heart.

2

Feel The Burn Yoga is known to burn

calories just like any other exercise, and like many other exercises has a whole host of other health benefits as well; from improving your flexibility and balance, helping you to sleep and even helping fight stress, anxiety and depression. Anecdotally, many people I know who practise Hot Yoga, tell me that the extra heat helps to warm their muscles up and gives a boost to their stretches and feels particularly good on a cold winter’s day!

3

Sweat it Out Although

there is no scientific evidence to say that Hot Yoga actually detoxifies through profuse sweating, (that’s the job of your liver and kidneys!), the feeling of perspiring is a welcome one for many fans of the practice. Says Rachael, a mum and Hot Yoga devotee from Sussex, “I’m a big fan of Hot Yoga as I find it really invigorating. Not only does the heat allow my muscles to stretch that bit further, I love the way that perspiring lots helps you feel purged and cleansed both mentally and physically!” The day before you practice and on the day itself, stay hydrated in anticipation of the heat. Bring a spare towel and change of clothes to keep you fresh after the session. Enjoy! l

CAUTION: If you have any long-standing health concerns, always consult your GP if you’re starting a new exercise.

BEAUTY & FASHION

Primed & Ready Primer can make or break makeup. Get on board with this hidden gem and turn your look from zero to hero in one fell swoop, as Sara Whatley found out

P

rimer? Pah! Who needs to add yet another bottle to the makeup bag? And yet more time to an already rushed morning routine? Not me, I thought, I’m fine without. In fact, I thought I was better without – less products on my skin, a cleaner fresher look, surely? Wrong! Oh how wrong I was. But never fear, all was not lost. I discovered primer and it rocked my makeup world. I used to go straight from moisturiser to foundation and for a while I dabbled in BB creams, but then when I got married and undertook the task of doing my own makeup (crazy? Yes, but I learned a lot) I did lots of tuitions and tests and my eyes were opened to the wonder of primer. No more creases or cracks, a smooth even coverage and dare I say it, even an amateur like me could make my makeup look half decent.

Primer is the behind the scenes star of the makeup palette Essentially, primer is a base coat – akin to plastering a wall before painting it – which smooths out the appearance of lines, fills in open pores and helps the rest of your makeup last longer and work harder. It’s amazing how a little thing can change so much; like a well pencilled eyebrow can lift an entire face, primer can transform a look without ever actually being seen. It is the behind the scenes star of the makeup palette. The world of primers is fast growing with way more than just your basic face primer on the market nowadays. 70 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2018

There are primers for eyes, lashes, lips, nails and even hair, all working hard to improve the look and lasting power of what you put on top of them. They are becoming more specialised as well, with properties of

anti-aging, super hydration, blemish and dark spot correction and SPF all on offer. Let’s not mention the whole host of other in-between lotions and potions on offer – smoothing creams, tinted moisturisers and lightening creams to name a few. Personally, I still like to keep it as simple as I can, but make sure I use the best products I can. Investing in a quality moisturiser, primer and foundation makes my makeup routine less Jackson Pollock and more Mona Lisa ( just got to work on the smile now). l

LIFESTYLE

THE MONTH OF OCTOBER Misty mornings and chilly nights greet us as October comes around, but it is a plentiful month for harvest. Michelle Brett tells us the facts and figures

O

ctober: much cooler nights, clocks changing, morning mists, even the odd possible frost towards the end of the month. The countryside is ripening, every hedgerow glistening with bright red hips and purple elderberries – every tree a different shade, with hazelnuts, walnuts and sweet chestnuts. The Anglo-Saxons called this month Winterfylleth composed of ‘winter’ and ‘full moon’, they believed that winter began at October’s full moon, falling this year on the 24th. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and World Blindness Awareness month.

Facts and Figures

In the Garden Give your lawn a helping hand to get over the summer. With the heat of the sun still deep in the ground and the recent wetter weather, the grass seed will germinate easily. Whilst the colder weather will stop the growth, the roots will keep on growing and spreading creating a strong base for when the warmer weather returns next spring, creating a lush green carpet. Now’s the time to plant the spring bulbs and collect up any fallen leaves and compost them (water and forget, and in

a couple of years you’ll have crumbly leaf mould). Put away any of the tender plants before the first frost. If you don’t have a greenhouse, use the porch or a cool spare room.

In the Kitchen October is the month that all the hearty vegetable and fruit begin to come into season: butternut squash, swede, parsnips, horseradish, pears, apples and quince. Goose, guinea fowl, hare, partridge and venison as we head into the game season whilst from the sea - oysters, turbot and crab are plentiful. Wild mushrooms such as cepes, morels and oyster are full of flavour and at the height of their season. With around 15,000 types of wild fungi in the UK, why not sign up for a foraging course? 74 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2018

Our day length continues to shorten and by the end of the month we’ll have lost another one hour and 54 minutes, giving us less than 10 hours of daylight. The sea temperature will begin to drop this month too, averaging 16.3°. October is the month when winter suddenly feels upon us, with the changing of the clocks. The ending of British Summer Time occurs in the early hours of the 28th – don’t forget to put your clocks back an hour. British Summer Time was introduced in 1916, but before that, time didn’t always stand still. It wasn’t until 1800 that the unified standard time for Great Britain (GMT) was made law. Previous to this, time was what the sun said it was and solar noon moved across the country. Town clocks all displayed their own time, with Norwich being several minutes ahead of London, Leeds six minutes behind, Bristol ten and so on. With the advent of the railways, and their quick travel throughout the UK, the potential for problems was, as you can well imagine, huge! Throughout the 1800s each railway town started to adopt London time as we know it now. If you’re born in October, you’ll be under either the Libra (up until the 22nd) or the Scorpio star sign and have two birthstones to choose from: Tourmaline and Opal. The birth flower for October is Marigold, exemplifying elegance and devotion. Famous birthdays this month include Sacha Baron Cohen (13th), Wayne Rooney (24th), Kate Winslet (5th), Julie Andrews (1st) and Hillary Clinton (26th) to name a few!

MONEY MATTERS

Explaining the ins and outs of some current tax matters, Melanie Richardson also reminds us to get our tax returns in before the deadline

MATTERS OF TAX TAX RETURNS We are slowly building up to the tax season and trying to get ready for the rush. Last year, clients were still sending us information at 5.45pm on 31 January and this year we are trying to get a bit ahead! There will always be those last-minute clients, but we can do a better job if we get the information a bit sooner. Who knows, with a bit of notice, we might even be able to do some planning and save you some tax!

BENEFIT IN KIND One of our clients has been giving their employees access to Perkbox. Perkbox provides staff with discounts and access to various deals which the employer pays for. It costs a relatively small amount per head and this client’s employees made good use if it. Unfortunately, giving employees access to Perkbox is classed as a benefit in kind and therefore the employees are treated as if they had received extra salary by HMRC. They end up paying additional income tax, which was completely not what the client had intended. In this case we were able to help and we wrote to HMRC explaining the situation and asking for a PAYE Settlement Agreement. This means that HMRC will allow the employer to pay the tax instead of the employees on an annual basis. Once agreed, this arrangement continues until it is cancelled by the employer. All they have to do now is to remember to pay the tax!

LEASE PREMIUMS A rather small piece of legislation came in quite handy for another of our clients this week. The client had taken over a lease from another tenant of the property. The lease had been reassigned to our client. Our client had paid a lease premium of £20,000 but this was not allowable for deduction against the company’s profits. Instead, a rather obscure piece of law means that we could take over the original tenant’s tax relief on a proportional basis and this can be offset against the company’s tax bill. Unfortunately, at the moment the company is loss making, and so can’t make use of the relief, but as corporation tax losses can be carried forward indefinitely, they will get the benefit of this at some point in the future. CHANGING ACCOUNTANTS Most businesses will at some point want to change banks or professional advisors. As Chartered Accountants, we have to comply with the regulations set out by our Institute. This means that when a client decides to move elsewhere, we are obliged to provide the necessary information to the new advisors and all in a reasonable time frame. Failure to do this will result in censure from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) which has the ability to fine and discipline firms. Dealing with a registered firm means that clients have these protections and more. However, unlike the term lawyer which is legally protected, anyone can call themselves an accountant and set up a business. We came across this recently when we started to act for a new client, who had trouble getting their information from their old accountants. In this instance, the accountants weren’t registered with a professional body and the client had no real way of getting what they needed. Luckily, we managed to file the accounts in time, but it is always a good idea to make sure your accountants are registered with the relevant regulatory body. l Money Matters is written by Melanie Richardson - Managing Partner Swindells LLP Chartered Accountants & Chartered Tax Advisers Tel: 01825 763366 As individual circumstances vary considerably from person to person, the views expressed in this article are meant only as a general guide, and any specific advice required should be sought from your own professional adviser or by contacting the writer at her place of work.
