he vibrant seaside town of Hastings has a rich maritime, historical and cultural heritage. Set in the heart of 1066 Country, Hastings is made up of three distinctly different areas connected by a shared promenade. In the east, between the East and West Hills, lies the preserved Old Town with its shingle beach, fishing boats, museums, festivals and distinctive narrow alleyways – known locally as twittens. In the west, St Leonards features the classical elegance of James Burton’s architecture and the antique shops and vintage galleries of Norman Road – recently described as the new ‘Portobello Road-on-Sea’. Sandwiched between them is the Town Centre, with Priory Meadow Shopping Centres’ eclectic mix of retail outlets, cafes and restaurants. The May Day Bank Holiday weekend features a Jack-inthe-Green festival and the May Day Run, when thousands of motorcyclists descend on Hastings via the A21. The yearly carnival during Old Town Week takes place every August, followed by a month-long arts festival and a two-day food and drink festival. During Hastings Week in mid-October, the Hastings Bonfire Society stages a traditional Sussex Bonfire Night; with a torchlight procession through the streets, a beach bonfire and firework display. Hastings also holds a celebrated Hastings also holds Pirate Day each July - and a celebrated Pirate is currently the world record holder for most Day each July pirates assembled in one place. The town has three cinemas, two theatres and a thriving arts venue and also holds popular annual beer and music festivals. The White Rock Theatre is renowned as a venue for live music, stand-up comedy, circus, panto and community events. Located in the Stade area in the heart of the fishing quarter, The Jerwood Gallery houses an important collection of 20th and 21st century British art never previously on public display. The Hastings Museum and Art Gallery concentrates mostly on local history. As fishing plays an integral part in Hastings’ past and present, the Shipwreck Museum and the Fishermen’s Museum recall old seafaring days and famous local shipwrecks. Next to the museums are the impressive tall black net huts, with a fish market offering fresh environmentally-caught fish, seafood restaurants and cafes.

William the Conqueror built Hastings Castle in 1070, four years after the Norman invasion. In 1287 a storm hit the southern coast of England, causing the cliff and half the castle to fall into the sea. Today, its Grade I listed remains overlook the town centre and the English Channel from West Hill. Hastings Pier is visible from all along the seafront. In 2010, a major fire burned down most of the buildings on the pier and damaged its infrastructure. After a £14m refurbishment, the pier reopened in 2016. Built in the 1930s, the double decker promenade runs from the pier beyond Marine Court with a break at Warrior Square. Hastings has two funicular railways - the West Hill Lift and the East Hill Lift, which is the steepest in Britain. The recently-restored Hastings Miniature Railway chugs along
the beach from Rock-a-Nore to Marine Parade. National Cycle Network route NCR2 passes through the town, on its way along the south coast between Dover in Kent and St Austell in Cornwall. Since 1984, Hastings has hosted a Half Marathon; starting and finishing by the West Marina Gardens in St Leonards. The Hastings International Chess Congress has attracted many world champions since its inception in 1911. The World Crazy Golf Championship has been held on Hasting seafront since 2003. Famous Hastings residents include the inventor of television John Logie Baird, novelist Robert Tressell, computer scientist Alan Turing, comedienne Jo Brand, Madness frontman Suggs and England footballer Gareth Barry. l

Di Overton and Harvey Roll were living in Newcastle when they first came across their Northumberland cottage, and although having a weekend retreat was his dream rather than hers, Di was keen to be involved too. “As we pulled up outside,” she remembers, “I said, “This is tiny! Shall we even bother looking?” But the owner was standing waiting; we couldn’t just turn around. So we went in, climbed upstairs, saw the bedroom and the views, looked at each other, and that was it. We both said, “Yes!”.’ Reinvention is what Di does best. Her current role is a designer taking vintage pieces and creating something
new – but her past career includes time as a knitwear designer, ad agency partner, and founder of a shopping website. Unsurprisingly, the couple’s cottage, too, has been imaginatively re-worked for each stage of their ownership, from its early days as the family’s weekend bolthole to, most significantly, its latest as their full-time home. When they bought it, the cottage had been a holiday let, fully booked and popular, given its attractive location tucked into a hillside with country views, yet lacking in character. “The fireplace had a fantastic electric fire in it – it looked medieval – and the

FUN DETAILS Bertha the mannequin has been with Di since her days as a knitwear designer in the 1980s. Di’s son, Gary gave her the easel and the picture frame was a bargain buy at a French brocante fair

bathroom was avocado and only had a shower,” says Di. Their first task was to make the small space a cosy escape for themselves and their now grown-up children. Over time they improved the interior with a new kitchen, bathroom, and full redecoration. It was only in 2006, when they decided to sell their large townhouse and move to Northumberland, that they decided to extend. With the help of a planner friend, they drew up a design to almost double their original floorspace, creating a large open plan kitchen and living area, and above it, moving the bathroom from the back of the original cottage, to the side, and adding a large master bedroom. “Our friend told us to apply for 18ft and expect to receive 14ft,” says Di. ‘He told us they always knocked four feet off. But this time they didn’t.”
Before the builders could get to work an archaeologist had to visit the site. “On the first dig they unearthed the floor of a byre next to it,” says Di, which comes from the Old English word for cow shed. “It must have been taken down and used to build the dry stone wall around the cottage. We only found one builder who would actually use those stones to rebuild, but that was important to us. The rest kept saying they’d get new stone, and we knew that would have looked like an extension. Really we have put back on what used to be there. It doesn’t look like it’s new. It looks like it’s been there forever.” Living in the cottage while the work was carried out was difficult; without room to work outside, the joiner had to use the living area as his workshop. “We had fantastic builders, but it was a nightmare,” Di admits. “Most of our

BATHROOM The bath is made from recyclable polyethylene and has interior lighting to give a relaxing glow
DI SHARES HER DECORATING TIPS It’s a misconception that small spaces need small pieces of furniture. A large statement piece can cheat the eye and huge mirrors can magically open up spaces and reflect light, if placed opposite a window. If you have a dark room with a lighter room next door, as we did in our bathroom, place an opaque window on the shared wall to bring light in from one room to the other. Furniture can still be placed in front of the window, which again tricks the eye. A mix of old and new, shabby and pristine, or large and small, creates an eclectic and interesting home. The main comment from visitors to our cottage is that there is always something to look at. Be brave and experiment – it will be well worth it.
SPIRAL STAIRCASE A staircase winds up to the bedrooms and bathroom. The marble-topped table came from a depot vente near Paris; Di kept its original brass edging and handles and painted the rest. Di gave Harvey the ebony tantalus with mother of pearl and brass inlay as a birthday present

stuff had to go into storage and it was like living in a stone caravan.” Once complete, however, and with the luxury of space, they were free to section off a generous kitchen-dining area, leaving plenty of room for a sitting room and study space for each of them. “It is one of the biggest rooms in the valley, but then,” Harvey jokes, “most people have more than one room.” Upstairs, the changes have been equally significant. “What has been done is really clever,” says Di. “I kept thinking we would hit our heads on a low ceiling, but the plans managed to create a passageway in the middle where there is enough head height for us, and make room for a laundry too.” Where possible, they have used salvaged materials. Stained glass from a Parisian apartment building stairwell has been built into the bathroom wall; kitchen cabinets made for a photo shoot have been re-fitted and painted. “I am not an eco warrior by any stretch of the imagination,” says Di, “but I do hate to see things being thrown away.” Aged and worn items work well
with the cottage’s relaxed interior style. “I looked for reclaimed flooring,” says Di, “but it was a ludicrous price for boards so thick that they would reduce the head height here, so we just put normal floorboards in and bashed them with chains. When the builders were working here, I was saying, ‘Scrape things over them…’ They couldn’t believe it.” Work continued as they added a new chimney ready for a woodburner, and addressed the serious issue of damp. Despite its stout walls, the cottage was scarcely weatherproof. “It’s the first stop between Newfoundland and here, so the weather hits us with force,” Di points out. “The cottage is so old that it was built without any gap in the wall, and there seemed to be so many pathways for water to enter. We were getting torrents coming through.” Dealing with the damp is a long term prospect. “I asked them to rough render the wall,” she says. “Any water trapped in the walls will eventually come out and calcify, and I can just

paint over it. It will take years to dry out completely.” The biggest challenge has been to introduce more light. Di is philosophical: “It’s a cottage and cottages are dark. You can’t get round it: you have got low ceilings and windows that are set back into really thick walls.” Painting the walls in a subtle cream and window returns in bright white both help, but Di clearly found some of their darker furniture difficult to place, including the carved oak dining table left to them by Harvey’s parents. She admits she hesitated, then, “One day I said to Harvey, ‘Would you mind if I painted your heirloom?’ and he said: ‘No’. It took me two weeks to get the bottle up to do it. I used to look at that end of the room and always think: ‘Oh no, it’s so dark!’ Then finally I painted it.” Gradually, she says, she has learned to trust her instincts. “At first we had our bed in the middle of the bedroom, and I kept saying, “I want it in the corner to create more space.” Everybody said it wouldn’t work, but one day we did it, and it does. It works really well.”

The colours change with the seasons, and the landscape is not rugged here, it’s pretty. “We have no regrets about moving here, none at all. Life’s a HOOT
With over fifty years of experience, Reg Lanaway certainly is an expert in the field of bird ringing. Peter d’Aguilar spoke to him about his lifelong love of animals and birds

The war broke of Shorthorn, British Friesian and out when he was six, but life went on Holstein cattle - spread across a 2000pretty much as normal; though local acre estate and its outstations. We were told not to pick anything up in case it blew our hand off. The whole thing was a bit of an adventure, really.” After school and National Service as a radar operator in the RAF, Reg returned to his first love – animal husbandry. He had worked with animals on local farms during the school holidays and he himself had pedigree, as his great grandfather had won a claret jug for champion livestock beast back in 1896. Aged twenty one,
that Reg developed an interest in birds. “Back then I used to find all sorts of birds’ nests – snipe, lapwing, redshank.” Reg explains. “Nowadays you just don’t see them. It was through these discoveries that I first became interested in bird ringing.” In 1968 Reg applied for a bird ringing permit and, fifty years on, he has caught, ringed, released and monitored thousands of birds of every species. As well as this, he became a member of the teaching faculty at an agricultural college, after taking a Cert Ed at university. As well as his daytime teaching duties he also gave evening classes to adults on Wildlife of Sussex. He finally retired from formal teaching in 1999 when he reached sixty-five, but continues to give talks and lead walks - particularly to show parties of schoolchildren where their food really comes from. Bird-ringing dates back as far as Roman times. It involves the

and holler and hammer your fingers with their beaks. I’ve ringed every kind of warbler and all sizes of bird from the smallest goldcrest to the largest sparrowhawk. They are attracted to the maize crops close by my garden.” Owls are also regular visitors. Reg has ringed barn owls, tawny owls and little owls. “Owl numbers tell you a lot about wildlife in general. We had four chicks last year, none in 2016 and twenty-two in 2015. It all depends on the local vole population, which is their food of choice. Since the introduction of field margins, the quantity of voles has increased - which in turn results in more barn owls.” Generally, the attachment of a small metal or plastic tag Owl numbers tell you a lot owls make use of the triangular nest to the leg or wing about wildlife in general boxes a couple of of a wild bird to fields away from enable individual Reg’s garden, but he recalls finding a identification. This helps in keeping nest full of young barn owls in a tunnel track of the bird’s movements - as inside a stack of hay bales - which well as its life history. During capture provided a perfect habitat. If the chicks for ringing, it is common to take survive their first winter they can live measurements and examine conditions of feather moult, subcutaneous fat, age for ten to twelve years. Once they have indications and gender. The subsequent left the nest in the autumn, they need recapture or recovery of the bird can provide information on migration, longevity, mortality, population, territoriality, feeding behaviour and other ornithological data. “We catch the birds in mist nets, which can only be bought with a licence – as ringing is strictly controlled,” says Reg. “We then attach a ring with a unique serial number and the address of the British Museum to the bird’s leg, having made a note of the date and location. The rings come in several different sizes. Surprisingly perhaps, some nestlings need larger ones than their parents - as they have fatter legs.” Reg has ringed over fifty different species of bird in his garden in Streat. The rarest include grasshopper warblers, pied flycatchers and one black redstart – which is rare in England but the equivalent of a robin in certain parts of mainland Europe. “The trickiest to deal with are sparrowhawks, which have fearsome talons, and great spotted woodpeckers, which scream
to find a safe territory to roost with a plentiful food supply and not too much competition from other owls. “One of the young owls I ringed turned up in Sevenoaks, over forty miles away,” recalls Reg. “Generally, owls don’t travel more than ten to fifteen miles. I once ringed a swallow that was found between Switzerland and Italy – which made it the first one properly authenticated, as I saw it in the nest as an egg.” Reg now works with one of his sons, who is also a dairy farmer. Together they ring about three thousand birds each year – though Reg is currently nursing an arthritic finger which is keeping him on the sidelines at present. “I’ve no regrets about any part of my life,” says Reg. “I’ve always loved animals and birds, and have enjoyed passing on my knowledge and enthusiasm to others.” l

It’s a Dog’s Life Keeping cool is hard work for a hot dog! Rolo the Border Terrier explains how he managed to navigate the recent heatwave
W
ell, oddly enough for a country whose summers are normally marked by over-optimistic anticipation drowned in disappointing realism, we’ve actually had a spell of hot weather! This has been attended by the usual chorus of, “I like it warm, but not this warm,” and everyone rushing to buy fans and air conditioning units. We dogs are not exempt from this concern about the weather. After all, we have to wear fur coats regardless. My apprentice, Teddy, has a heavy, double coat, whereas I have a lighter, silver version, which conveniently reflects the sun. What can I tell you, I’m a highly evolved canine. Teddy, on the other hand, has had to undergo hand-striping, which is not a dubious dance in a night-club with blacked out windows, but a process that involves pulling all the dead fur out, revealing a slim-line profile beneath.
Anyway, he’s looking rather dapper and is better suited to the prevailing climate, which is a blessing.
You can also get doggy bandanas in absorbent material that you soak in water and which cool you down by evaporation You can help heat-suffering canines by buying cooling mats for them to lie on, but ‘Her Indoors’ reckons our cold, tiled kitchen floor does the same job without any extra expenditure. I think she’s just being cheap-skate so Teddy and I got our revenge by lying in front of the fan so she didn’t benefit from any of the cooling air. That’ll teach her. I did think of attaching a paper fan to Teddy’s tail and then getting
‘Her Indoors’ to repeatedly tell him that he’s a good boy, but in the end the electric version seemed less effort. You can also get doggy bandanas in absorbent material that you soak in water and which cool you down by evaporation. There have been some shameful examples on social media of people buying them for their dogs and then wearing them themselves, but by the time ‘Her Indoors’ had finally got around to buying us one each, it was raining. Typical! However, ‘Her Indoors’ was glad to get a temporary break from lugging cans of water around the garden for the plants. I don’t know why she’s complaining; it’s cheaper than the gym and at her age, is a good way of avoiding bingo wings, so she should be grateful. Still, with the children heading back to school in their new winter uniforms, we’re bound to have another hot spell and we shall ensure we deploy ourselves strategically in the sun until we’re hot enough to fry an egg on, then retire to the shade, panting vigorously. I don’t know who halitosis is, but he seems to get a regular mention on such occasions and he doesn’t seem very popular. Still, you’ve got to make the most of it whilst you can, it’s a long time winter! l

NATURAL LIVING
Bee business A
Witnessing a natural marvel in her very own back garden, Ruth Lawrence takes a close look at the truly amazing world of bee swarms on the move
bout to pick a crop of apples from the laden tree in our garden, I found the ultimate gift to mark the end of summer; a swarm of bees has set up a temporary home on one of the gnarled branches. Bees form a new colony when their present hive is full, nearly every cell holding nectar and honey, pollen or bee larvae. A signal goes out to the colony that its time to reproduce itself and the older bees leave their established location for the younger bees to inherit. The older bees, including the old Queen, swarm together to find a
new place to inhabit. A week before swarming, nursery bees prepare vertical combs to hold eggs that will develop into new queens, only one of whom will become the reproductive force for the colony. When these eggs are halfway developed, the bees realise its time to swarm. A signal tells each bee to take a drop of honey and they pour from the hive by the thousand. Their only intention is to protect the Queen during flight as she flies in their midst; early this summer I walked through a swarm in flight on the downs and the air was filled with
deep humming as they passed. The Queen’s fertility is apparently restored by this flight when she at last leaves the darkness and flies in sunlight – this happens throughout her natural life. The swarm settles on a branch or other suitable resting place. This is where they will stay for a few hours or days while scout bees go out looking for a more permanent location for the colony. When the scouts return, they communicate the direction and distance of the potential location to other bees by a special dance that may convince other scouts to go and check it out for themselves. The scout conveys her enthusiasm for the new location in her dance and gradually a selection process occurs. Eventually when 80% of the scouts have agreed on the most suitable nest site, the swarm departs once more. They may fly a kilometre to a new nest site, which must be just right. It must be large enough to accommodate the swarm, be well protected from the elements and receive a certain amount of warmth from the sun.
When 80% of the scouts have agreed on the most suitable nest site, the swarm departs once more I have been able to view the swarm at close quarters. The bees are gentle and avoid me even when I’ve been taking photographs nearby. I’ve seen the scouts dancing to convey the potential new nest site; they turn and waggle their bodies while the others ‘listen’. In a day or so they’ll have flown on so I’m keeping a close eye on them, hoping to witness their flight together to a more permanent home. l 36 SUSSEX LIVING | September 2018

hen you think of the traditional student gap year, all sorts of options spring to mind. Backpacking with friends in South East Asia, travelling around Australia or interrailing across Europe to name a few. There are also numerous charitable options that young people can access to gain life and work experience in some of the worlds’ poorest communities. This is what Will Kemp, 18, from Sussex did when he was looking to fill part of his gap year in 2017. Will chose to go with International Citizen Service (ICS) – a UK Government funded programme providing volunteering
placements to 18-25 year olds and team leader placements to 23-35 year olds. “I always planned to do a gap year and trying to get on a placement with ICS felt like a great way of filling part of it in a meaningful way. I opted for ICS because of the gravitas associated with this organisation and the projects they undertake in developing countries,” says Will. ICS is run by respected development organisations and funded by the UK Government’s Department for International Development. Their projects are carefully designed to help end poverty in a socially sustainable way. So, in October 2017, Will spent 10 weeks in rural

Nepal, staying with a Nepalese host family and fully immersing himself in their way of life. According to Will, this was one of the highlights of his trip with ICS. He explains, “Experiencing family life in the small village of Tiltar was amazing. My host family were wonderful and couldn’t have been more welcoming towards me. They were literally the happiest people I’ve ever met. In terms of Western culture, they have very little in the way of material things, so their life as a close-knit loving family is everything.” Part of Will’s project in Nepal was to teach in two local schools. “I taught lessons on culture, careers and because I was so immersed in the culture, I picked up quite a bit of Nepalese by the end of my trip,” says Will. And what were the challenges to being away from home and in an entirely different culture for 10 weeks? “Oh, there were lots!” laughs Will. “As a young person, having no WiFi and therefore little access to social media was a real challenge for me! But in the end, it was actually brilliant to detox from it all. Where I stayed was really geography for 7-11 year olds and to older kids of about 15,” says Will. “It was really interesting as many of the children said they wanted to be pilots when they grew up. They had a real thirst to travel.” Much of the other work he undertook was infrastructure and agriculture-based with a particular focus on climate change. “We helped to build poly-tunnels, plastic ponds, vegetable gardens and even worked with the local blacksmith. After the 2015 earthquake, the country is still recovering to a certain extent.” How did Will find the language barrier? “There were four ‘in-country’ Nepali volunteers in our group who would help to translate into English. Plus,
part of the festival offerings - there was no getting out of it! Plus, Nepal is a stunning country. We went on so many wonderful treks and I had plenty of time to self-reflect.” Will also came face to face with his arachnophobia when a friend planted a giant spider on his shoulders. “Well I got over that phobia and fast!” Aside from facing his fears, Will also grew in confidence on his trip. “I used to be a relatively shy person,” he says, “but I’ve gained so much in terms of confidence and ability to meet new people and challenges. The beauty of an ICS scheme is that’s it’s structured and you receive plenty of training and
My host family were literally the happiest people I’ve ever met
remote and very rural and it took a while to acclimatise. Also eating the same meal of rice and beans each day with little variation took some getting used to. But this really makes you appreciate other people’s way of life compared to your own.” Similarly, the highlights for Will were multifold. “I met so many great people. There were 12 of us in the team and I’ve made some lifelong friends out of it. When you’re forced out of your comfort zone with others, you tend to bond. A good example is our participation in a Buddhist and Hindi five day festival where we had to dance every night in the village as
support. Two out of the ten weeks you are given the role of Team Leader which means you have to organise everyone’s daily timetable and oversee your team. It gives you invaluable insights to take back to your own life and career.” Indeed because of ICS’ focus on climate change, Will’s experiences in Nepal fit perfectly with his career goals and he plans to study Natural Sciences at Leeds University in October. “Applying to do ICS is one of the best decisions I ever made,” says Will. “Plus, the way it is structured enables you to get on with the process of working hard and challenging yourself. The Government funds 90% of your trip and as a volunteer you fund 10% yourself – usually around £800. Your visas, flights, travel and medical insurance, medication, vaccines, food and accommodation are all included.” So, for anyone thinking of taking a gap year, consider ICS – it could be one of the best decisions you ever made. l For more information on ICS, go to www.volunteerics.org

This novel is the story of a rock band at a formative time in musical history - inspired by the great '60s and '70s supergroups, and of the tales brought back from the front line by the alchemists and enablers - when America was opening its doors to English music and huge amounts of money and selfgratification were there for the taking. Rock and Roll is Life is a worm's-eye view of British pop music's golden age and a bittersweet personal journey, with cameo appearances from everyone from Elvis and the Queen Mother to Andy Warhol.

BOOK REVIEW
Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest
ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE by Gail Honeyman
And so, obviously, she’s not fine at all. It becomes clear straight away that she has an OCD/Aspergers personality, so her days are rigidly structured and she has no friends. She doesn’t regard this as a problem – it’s the rest of the world that’s out of step. And then, after an incident involving the collapse of an elderly man, she starts to develop a rather prickly relationship with Raymond, who works in her office where she holds an administrative job well below her capabilities. Gradually, the reader begins
She is a very engaging character in her own oddball way to discover things about Eleanor’s past and her insane and dominating mother. The one thing I’d like to have known was a bit more about the mother’s past, and how she became the multi-faceted and sadistic individual she was. There is a twist in the plot, which I guessed before the reveal, but not so much in advance that it spoilt anything. She is a very engaging character in her own oddball way, and I loved every minute of the book. One of those novels that you’re disappointed to finish – I felt it could have been a lot longer, as it’s original, well-written, and juggles comedy and tragedy with style.
DARK PLACES by Gillian Flynn
THE BAD BUNNIES’ MAGIC SHOW
This novel was written before Gone Girl. It alternates between the present and 1985, when seven-year-old Libby’s family was massacred and she was instrumental in having her older brother convicted. Psychologically damaged by the event, Libby has drifted in an aimless way, living off donations from well-wishers and the proceeds of a book about the murder of her mother and two sisters. The money isn’t going to last forever, and as she looks for a way, to generate some
This is a pre-school book for little ones, with several clever devices for concealing pictures on the page such as a stage curtain that folds back to reveal Mr Abra and Mr Cadabra. These are the two bad bunnies who put on a magic show in place of the real magician, who has unaccountably disappeared. The two bad bunnies have the sole intention of stealing all the jewellery worn by members of the audience by hypnotising them to put everything they own into a sack – a

income, she is contacted by the Kill Club, a voyeuristic group of people obsessed with murder who disagree with the verdict that Libby’s brother Ben received, and want to investigate it. Ben has led a blameless life in prison for twenty-five years, and as the club can’t contact the people involved themselves Libby is drawn in, and rather unwillingly starts to play the detective. There are some upsetting descriptions of violence along the way, and your opinion on who is actually guilty of the crime changes from chapter to chapter. The plot unravels in some surprising ways, and I did not guess the outcome.

real disappearing act! There are all the usual turns – knife-throwing and sawing someone in half and escapology. I would have found this a bit worrying for young children, but for the final few pages when the real magician arrives and fires the two miscreants from a cannon to teach them a lesson. Author and illustrator Mini Grey has produced an attractive book that would make good bedtime reading, particularly for those parents who like putting a bit of expression into their reading – most of the punch lines end in O, and rhyme, so there’s lots of scope for kids who know what’s coming to join in.

LEGAL MATTERS
Simply
LEGAL Understanding the law surrounding the three key issues of pensions, inheritance tax and will making can be tricky at best. Here, Lisa de Silva puts it into simple, jargon free terms
T
he UK legal system has evolved over hundreds of years to keep pace with our ever-changing society, to ensure that it remains as civilised, fair and protective of citizens as possible. As such, it is one of the most important institutions in the land. But how well do you know your legal rights when it comes to long-term financial planning? Long-term financial planning is important in maintaining a good quality of life and the earlier you start the better. To help you understand how legal issues can impact financial planning, both positively and negatively, we’ve taken a closer look at the law around pensions, inheritance tax and will making. Hopefully, some of the issues raised will help set you on the road to creating and maintaining a quality lifestyle for you and your heirs, but we would strongly advise you seek the professional services of a solicitor or accountant to advise you on your individual circumstances. HOW THE LAW HAS RECENTLY CHANGED AROUND PENSIONS The issue of pensions is a vast and complex area, so we have chosen to focus on how the law has recently changed to affect pensions. Automatic Enrolment Schemes In April 2017, it became a legal requirement for employers to enrol staff in a workplace pension under the automatic enrolment scheme. All employees are eligible for automatic enrolment as long as they meet the following criteria:
• they are not already in a workplace pension • they are aged 22 years or older • they are under State Pension age • they earn more than £10,000 p.a. • they work in the UK Employees can opt out, but as employers have to contribute to the scheme as well as the employee, it is a good idea to join. What’s more, employees get tax relief on their contributions to the scheme. ‘Pensions Flexibility’ Rules The law has also changed since April 2015, when new ‘pensions flexibility’ rules were introduced to allow people over the age of 55 years to access as much of their savings from a defined contributions pension scheme as they
Long-term financial planning is important in maintaining a good quality of life wish, with 25% of the sum being tax-free. The money can then be used in three main ways: • t o buy a lifetime annuity but with the option to take a tax free lump sum of up to 25% of your pension pot • t o put the funds into drawdown with no limit on the amount you can take each year, again you can take a tax free lump sum of up to 25% of the pot at the same time • t o take the money as a lump sum payment, with 25% being tax free. This is called an ‘uncrystallised funds pension lump sum’ (UFPLS) PLANNING FOR INHERITANCE TAX Inheritance tax (IHT) is a tax levied on the property and assets you have at the time of death and anything you have given away during the previous seven years. Generally, there is no IHT to pay if the total estate is valued below £325,000, or you leave everything to a spouse, civil partner, charity or community amateur sports club. The standard level of IHT is 40% and it is only charged on the part of your

value needs to be reported to HMRC even if it is under the £325,000 threshold. In recent years the law has changed around IHT to include Transferable Main Residence Allowance (TMRA) to help people pass property onto descendants. This means that if you leave your home to your children or grandchildren, the tax threshold increases to £450,000. For married couples and those in a civil partnership, the unused threshold can be added to your partner’s threshold giving a total estate value of £900,000 before any IHT is due. This figure is set to rise
HOW TO REDUCE INHERITANCE TAX
Early planning is key to minimising the amount of IHT payable. Firstly, do ensure you have made a will to protect your decisions on how your assets are distributed after your death and to ensure that your affairs are dealt with tax efficiently. One way to reduce the tax is to reduce the value of your estate before you die. However, do be aware that any money or property given away will be liable for IHT if you die within seven years and it is strongly recommended that you invest in professional legal advice before embarking on this course of action as this is a complicated area.
THE MAIN WAYS TO HELP REDUCE IHT INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: give up to £3,000 away each year and pay no tax if unused this tax-exempt allowance can be carried over to the following year to £6,000 gifts of up to £250 a year to any one recipient are excluded from IHT, so this small amount can be given annually to a large number of relatives give a wedding gift up to £5,000 to a child and £2,500 to a grandchild tax-free. As the allowance is per person, couples can give up to £10,000 downsize your home and spend the capital leave 10% of your estate to charity and under Legacy10 legislation, the level of IHT on the rest of your estate reduces to 36% set up a Discretionary Trust which could help to reduce the rate of IHT put money into specialist tax-efficient investments, loan and bonds plans and flexible revisionary interest trusts use a ‘gift inter-vivos’ or whole life assurance policy to generate the money to pay for IHT a trading business can be wholly or partially exempt from IHT agricultural land that is let out or farmed can be exempt from IHT if death was caused by an injury or wound sustained from active service against a state enemy exemption can apply

to £500,000 for individuals and £1 million for couples by 2021. THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING A WILL It is important to make a will to ensure that your estate is distributed in accordance with your wishes after your death. A will gives you the opportunity to specify which family members, friends and charities receive your assets. It is particularly important for those with children under 18 years to make a will in order to name those they wish to become legal guardians in the event of both parents’ deaths. You can also use a will to give instructions about your funeral. Once you have written a will do make sure family members know where it is kept, or any details of a solicitor it is lodged with. If you die with no will, or your will is deemed to be legally invalid, your estate is divided up under the rules of intestacy. Under the rules of intestacy only married, civil partners or other close relatives can inherit. So, making a will is vital for unmarried couples as if one dies intestate, it will cause serious problems for the remaining partner. Upon death, the executor(s) of the will makes a valuation of the estate that is submitted to HMRC. They can then apply to the Probate Registry for a Grant of Probate. Once any inheritance tax has been paid and an oath has been sworn in court, the Grant of Probate is given which allows the executor(s) to close accounts, transfer assets, deal with property and pay any debts. All debts must be settled before the assets are distributed. This process can be completed by a solicitor if required. As this is just a snapshot of the impact the law can have over your long term financial planning, we would strongly recommend you take professional advice from a solicitor or accountant to ensure your individual circumstances are accounted for. l

CROSS CODE
Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

BLOOMING TIMES
Get Spruced Up! Don’t believe the myth conifers aren’t boring! Easy to grow, architectural, they have much to offer your garden, says Flo Whitaker
M
ost shrubs will survive an injudicious pruning attack. Like a bad haircut, they’ll eventually ‘grow out of it’ but when it comes to conifers, put those secateurs down! Most conifers do not take kindly to pruning. They don’t usually regenerate from old wood so choose the site for new plantings carefully, or be prepared to remove a plant if it outgrows its allotted space. Conifers come in every colour, size and shape; adding much to the garden but asking for little in return. Keep them well irrigated in their first year, give them a feed every spring and they’ll probably last for donkey’s years. Don’t be fooled by plant labels that read dwarf conifer. Few conifers are ‘dwarf’ in habit - it’s more accurate to say that some are very slow-growing indeed and take a long time to reach full size. Many Juniper varieties are ideal for rockeries or gravel gardens. Juniperus procumbens ‘Nana’ is a perfect evergreen ground cover plant that reaches the dizzying height of 30 cms. Well-behaved Juniper compressa grows

approximately 3 cms per year and will eventually makes a neat and slender shrub 60-90 cms high. Calocedrus decurrens, the ‘Incense Cedar’ is a huge forest tree. The wood is used to make pencils - that’s why they have that distinctive aroma when you sharpen them. There are several garden-suitable varieties of Calocedrus,
including ‘Berrima Gold’, whose bright golden foliage takes on additional fiery orange hues during the winter. Berrima Gold will eventually reach 3 metres in height, but takes 20 years or more to do so; a good example of ‘slow’, not ‘dwarf’. The mature bark often becomes golden in colour too, making it a real show-stopper for a winter border. Pinus mugo used to be called ‘The Mountain Pine’. Nowadays it should probably be re-named ‘The Car Park Pine’, such is its prevalence in dreary urban landscaping. It has stiff bottlebrushtype branches, grows 2-3 metres tall and, along with the seemingly indestructible yew, is one of the few conifers you can successfully prune. It is unbelievably tough; copes with boiling sunshine, snow, rubbishy soil, road salt and survives where nothing else will. It should be better appreciated. The fabulously architectural Korean fir, (Abies koreana) eventually attains 10 metres, but takes ages getting there, so don’t rule it out. It bears upright cones in astonishing shades of inky purple and violet. Abies ‘Silberlocke’ is even slower and may be content to reach 2 metres in height. Imagine a Korean fir, festooned with cones and planted in a large terracotta pot in a wintery garden setting. What an irresistible idea! It’s enough to make you grab your coat and credit card and head for your favourite garden centre. I’ll see you there! l

LIME CROSS NURSERY
SPECIALISTS IN THE PRODUCTION OF PREMIER CONIFERS
Lime Cross Nursery is now in the third generation of the Tate family, with sisters Helen and Vicky at the helm of this truly independent family enterprise. Their grandparents Alan and Olive purchased the land in Herstmonceux in the early 1940s and after trying pig rearing and tobacco farming they settled on growing wall flowers which they did successfully up until the 1960s.
Jon and Vicky Tate In the 60s their son Jonathon joined the business, who by this time was a well-known and highly respected plants man specialising in the propagation of conifers. He was a founding member of the British Conifer Society, and discovered several new varieties as well as rescuing others from the brink of extinction. Selling container grown conifers, trees and shrubs to the wholesale market both in the UK and internationally the business expanded during the 1970s with the rise in popularity of conifers. As the conifer market started to go out of fashion during the 90s the business continued to specialise in
conifers and despite the hard times started to diversify as the new millennium arrived. By the middle of the 2000s Lime Cross Nursery had built a new shop with a café and then daughter Vicky joined in 2008 to help run the business after studying fine art and working at The Auckland Botanical Garden. Six years later, Jon’s other daughter also joined the business having studied Viticulture at University and travelled the world working in the wine industry. During this period, unfortunately and very sadly Jon had become ill with cancer and after 7 years of treatment he passed away in 2014. However, his spirit and legacy lives on in his daughters and the trees that he propagated as they now combine their knowledge, experience, energy and passion into Lime Cross Nursery. In the last couple of years, Vicky and Helen have been helping to revive the interest and popularity of conifers by attending major shows such as Grow London, Wisley, Chatsworth and by
special invitation only to Great Dixter by head gardener Fergus Garrett. With conifers coming back into fashion Lime Cross Nursery has been working with eminent gardeners such as Matt Pottage, the Curator at Wisley, who is also passionate about the revival of conifers and have supplied specimens of conifers to the new Exotic Gardens at Wisley. Many Garden Designers are going to Lime Cross for their expertise and knowledge of conifers. As they are recognising the uniqueness, robustness, structure and forms that conifers offer with vibrant greens and blues mixing beautifully with other plant groups like grasses, tropical specimens and acers. 2018 has been an incredible year for the sisters and the team at Lime Cross Nursery. Winning a Gold medal at Hampton Court and a Silver Gilt at RHS Chatsworth Plant Show for their display themed ‘well-being, wildness and escapism’ and appearing on BBC Gardeners World and next year they will be applying for Chelsea so watch this space! Helen and Vicky have worked hard to preserve the essence of what their father and grandparents created. So typically, rather than expand the retail element and become another big garden centre driven by profit and margins, they have diversified the lake area with a new stunning modular and mirrored building known as the ÖÖD House, distributed in the UK by Round Wood of Mayfield. This calm and relaxing space has classes for yoga, meditation, massage and times for wild swimming in the lake to create a real retreat area. Whilst times have changed, it’s refreshing that this family business is still thriving on the passion and substance that created it many years ago. But it is now being driven by the energy and enthusiasm of another generation that keep to the principles on which it was founded. How uplifting! Lime Cross Nursery, Herstmonceux BN27 4RS

BODY BUZZ
JUMP
FOR JOY!
Thought trampolining was just a lively leap? Well think again, Sasha Kanal explains the science behind the bounce
MORE OUNCE FOR YOUR BOUNCE So, what’s so special about rebounding and how you can practice the activity in the safest way possible?
1
FEEL THE FORCE! Trampolining is a low impact activity compared to jogging or other aerobic activities that use a hard surface. The impact from the bounce is naturally absorbed by the trampoline, in turn reducing the risk of injury to your muscles and joints. When you jump in the air on a trampoline, you experience
According to data collected by NASA, rebounding exercise or trampolining is 68% more efficient than jogging a momentary state of weightlessness at the top of the jump. Yet, when you reach the bottom of your jump and land, your body will experience as much as 4Gs of gravitational force, twice the force of gravity! It’s this shift in gravity that is super beneficial to
2
IMMUNE BOOSTER The
lymphatic system is a key part of the immune system as lymph contains a high number of the white blood cells responsible for fighting infections in the body. Trampolining causes the valves in the lymphatic system to open and close which can increase lymphatic flow and therefore white blood cells up to 15 times - now that’s a boost!
3
CELLULITE FREE The fact that trampolining works every cell in your body means a unique calorie burning opportunity is created. But there’s more. Anecdotal research has shown that it activates the thyroid gland in a particular way. Because more blood is pumped through the thyroid, it stimulates the gland to clean itself and our system of stored fat, in this case potentially the stubborn fat associated with lifestyle factors such as cellulite.
4
PLAY IT SAFE If you really want to minimise risk, it’s probably better not to use the garden trampoline, but rather buy yourself a small rebounder or mini trampoline (available at any good sports shop). Here the emphasis is not on jumping as high as possible, but to make smaller movements with the lower body and all whilst maximising upon the fact that you are working against gravity. l
CAUTION: If you have any long-standing health concerns, always consult your GP if you’re starting a new exercise.
W
e’ve all been there, bouncing on the garden trampoline with our children, grandchildren or family members, or simply watching the spectacle from afar. The sound of laughter piercing the air and a feeling of weightlessness and being ever so slightly out of control once you land! Trampolines dot many a back garden in Sussex and are synonymous with childhood and fun. But if you think bouncing is purely the reserve of youngsters or a quick 2-minute go on a summer evening with little ones, then think again! According to data collected by NASA, rebounding exercise or trampolining is 68% more efficient than jogging when it comes to burning calories and supporting a healthy metabolism, not to mention the whole host of other benefits it brings.
every muscle and cell in our body as it helps kick start the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is responsible for detoxifying the body and removing waste products, bacteria and damaged cells.

LOCAL WALK
WADHURST
WALK
With summer holidays nearing their end and autumn term fast approaching Robert Veitch and his nephew Joe packed a rucksack and went off to explore the foothills of Wadhurst
L
eaving the car park, walk to the end of Greyhound Lane then cross the road to Blacksmith’s Lane opposite. Between the pretty tile hung homes the newly surfaced road falls away downhill, bordered on either side by neatly trimmed hedges. After 300m take the entrance to Little Pell Farm that’s straight ahead, where the road turns left. Along the track there are hops, farmhouses and two barns. Keep left of the farthest barn, following the unmade track to the pair of metal gates. Cross the stile by the gate on the left and continue downhill into the glade, passing a pond on the way. When the unmade track ends, keep going, straight on, into another glade. The path narrows down as it approaches a stile with a dog flap. Beyond the stile, keep to the left, passing a decaying tree trunk on the way to the bottom of the field where a gate and stile co-habit in the corner. Turn right and join the ‘Bewl Water Route,’ which encapsulates the reservoir. It’s firm underfoot as this is a path well used by walkers and cyclists. The path twists and turns through the trees, gently undulating… A genteel woodland bobsleigh track as Joe and I noted. Leaving the trees behind the scenery
expands into the wonderfully rich vista of Bewl Water… possibly accompanied by the sound of honking geese. The route runs parallel to the waterside for a while, mostly level, following the contour lines through the meadows, flowers and colours of late summer. It all comes abruptly to an end by two posts and a brown sign marked ‘Bewl Water Route.’ Walk uphill for 100m, before turning 90° left. head height, about 100m before the junction with the road? Turn right at the road, then after 50m turn left at the fingerpost, walking down the concrete drive towards Bryant’s Farm. Turn right at the gate by the ‘Private Property’ sign, down the flight of steps where it says ‘¼ mile to Hook Hill.’ The path turns sharp left and the reservoir can be seen once again, through low-lying branches that caress the rippling surface of the water. “It’s a perfect place for crocodiles to lie in wait, ready to ambush a passer by,” according to Joe. Alan Hatton’s bench is a nice place to pause for a moment or two and absorb the scenery. Just beyond his bench is an old road (most of which is now submerged). Turn right towards the pair of wooden gates, and walk uphill to the junction. At the junction, turn right onto the resurfaced Ward’s Lane. It’s just under ¾ mile to the entrance to Chesson’s Farm, and almost 200m after that bear right at the gate marked ‘Lambing Season Notice’ not forgetting to close it behind you. Keep to the right side of the field, walking downhill between the two large oaks, turning left immediately after and heading into the gulley that leads to

a bridge and pair of wooden gates. Beyond the gates, the path follows the curve of the land as it gains altitude gently, leveling off, straightening and then ending at a gate by a telegraph pole. Turn left onto the drive and after ⅓ mile take the steps on the right, down to the iron kissing gate and into the field. After 50m bear left, diagonally downhill across the field towards the distant metal gate. Entering the woods, follow the path around to the left, over the bridge and the iron coloured stream beneath. The route hugs the left side of the field populated with wheat and maize, joining Foxhole Lane at the top. Over the stile on the other side of the road, walk southwest across the field until ‘John Jefferson’s’ stile is encountered. Beyond this, turn right and head back to Wadhurst for whatever refreshments you think you deserve! CHARITY
IT’S ALL ABOUT CHARITY Chestnut Tree House – See it for yourself Chestnut Tree House, the children’s hospice for Sussex and South East Hampshire, is opening its doors and inviting everyone to see the hospice for themselves. The charity cares for around 300 children with life-shortening conditions and their families, helping them live for the now. From providing a few hours respite from the round-the-clock responsibilities of
caring for a sick child to supporting families through their toughest moments, Chestnut Tree House provides care at their purposebuilt hospice near Arundel and in families’ own homes. On Friday 5 and Saturday 6 October the hospice building will be taking a break from caring for children and families and instead opening its doors to the public. “This is a rare opportunity to explore the house and grounds,” says Janet Parsons from Chestnut Tree House. “People are often surprised at what a homely, comfortable and fun place the hospice is, and we would love to show it off to as many people as possible.” The hospice can be found on Dover Lane, just off of the A27 at Poling. It will be open from 10 until 4 on both days, there is no need to book and parking and refreshments will be available. For more information call 01323 725095

Snailspace Brighton 2018 - #BeMoreSnail Fifty giant snail sculptures, each uniquely decorated by an artist, will sneak their way onto the streets of Brighton & Hove from Saturday 15 September until Sunday 18 November 2018. The colourful creatures will be on show for nine weeks, encouraging locals to be tourists in their own city and generating a giant snail sized ‘feel-good’ factor. The giant gastropods will be joined by a host of smaller snails as part of the Junior Snailway. More than 50 nurseries, schools and youth groups will decorate their own snails, which will be displayed in accessible locations across the city. At the end of the trail there will be a celebratory Farewell Event; a chance to see the snail sculptures together. Finally, the giant gastropods will be auctioned to raise money for Martlets and its life-changing hospice care. For more information visit: www.snailspacebrighton.co.uk @snailspacebh #BeMoreSnail

BEAUTY in these recent years. Bundle up in a bright faux fur jacket to make a statement or indulge in the animal print trend. Word on the street is dare to pair – go top to toe animal print! Faux fur collars and cuffs also look great on most outerwear and bring an element of snow queen glamour to your look.
It’s time to talk coats. Sara Whatley takes a look at some of the key trends coming your way this autumn and winter
Button up I
t may be hard to imagine wrapping yourself up in a coat what with all this glorious sunshine, but guess what? Autumn is just around the corner. Get ahead of the game and sort your winter coat out now; you’ll be thankful when faced with a suddenly chilly morning or a late evening stroll when a pully doesn’t quite cut it. Think carefully before investing in a new coat – it’s an integral part of your autumn/winter wardrobe and one that will be worn day in, day out, so make sure you are 100% happy with it. There are a few key trends to look out for this year, including some old favourite classics and some exciting new looks: DRESSING GOWN COATS Like you never left your bed, snuggle into a deep collar and belt up. These super cosy coats will keep you toasty warm inside and out, just don’t forget to take your slippers off.
LONG WOOLLEN COATS A bit like the grown-up version of the dressing gown coat but can be worn fitted – giving you a long elegant silhouette – or oversized – guaranteed to fit over bulky jumpers. Patterns adorn this style of coat, from tartan and windowpane checks to houndstooth plaid and gingham or if you fancy something a little simpler try one of the many single colour options in trend. Just make sure it’s bright – pink was a big look on many of the runways! FAUX FUR AND ANIMAL PRINT COATS The faux fur trend has catapulted into popularity
SKI JACKETS Heading down from the slopes, ski jackets have made their way to street style. A more relaxed style of coat which embraces the sportswear trend, you can still dress them up with a fur collar and a feminine pretty pastel colour. Best paired over casual separates like jeans, joggers and hoodies. SHEARLING COATS The shearling coat has been embraced by designers this season with both faux or real shearling readily available. Something that makes this coat so special is that you can wear it in so many different ways, for example: • Full length in a knee grazing cocoon • Cosy lining in an aviator jacket • Shearling trim • Classic biker VINYL COATS The fabric, once the preserve of flooring, has taken a leap into the fashion world. A big hit in 2017, vinyl coats are back again this season to add a daring edge to your wardrobe. Go all out with a trench or take a baby step with a short vinyl jacket. Black or red look particularly striking with this trend. l

FOOD & DRINK
Use up the glut of ripe fruits in this juicy jam for a late summer treat. Berry flavours naturally complement each other, particularly when blended with the juniper berries, which lend a gentle and subtle taste of gin to the jam
Summer Berry Juniper Jam &
Makes about 1.3kg of jam to pot. Raspberries and blackberries are used in the recipe below but any ripe summer berries can be added. INGREDIENTS 700g fresh raspberries 700g fresh blackberries 2 teaspoons of juniper berries (crushed) 300ml water 1.3kg granulated sugar (warmed) Juice of 2 lemons METHOD 1 Put the juniper berries in a mortar and gently crush
with a pestle to release their flavour. 2 Wash the fresh whole raspberries and blackberries and put them, with the crushed juniper berries, in a large heavy pan with the water. 3 Set over a low heat, cover with a lid, and cook gently for about 15 minutes, or until the juices from the fruit begin to run and the berries start to break down. 4 Add the granulated sugar and lemon juice to
the pan, and cook over a low heat, stirring frequently, until the sugar has dissolved. Be careful not to break up the summer berries too much as you stir.
5 Bring up to the boil and cook for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the jam reaches the setting point (105°C/220°F). 6 Remove the pan from the heat and skim off any scum and impurities from the surface using a slotted spoon. 7 Leave to cool for about 5 minutes, then stir gently, and pour into warmed sterilized jars. Seal and label, then store in a cool, dark place. Recipe and photographer Fiona Kennedy/Narratives

LIFESTYLE
THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER As September begins, we start to notice the shorter days and beautiful autumnal colours appearing, Michelle Brett tells us what to expect from this transitional month
S
eptember, (from the Latin septem, seven) was originally the seventh month on the Roman calendar. Heralding the start of meteorological autumn, the days will noticeably get shorter after the 23rd, the autumnal equinox. Generally, September can put summer to shame with less rain and storms as the temperatures drop, but this year… who knows? Expect mists to form overnight, especially towards the end of the month and we may see what remains of any hurricanes that cross the Atlantic. The 29th of the month, Michaelmas Day, is the date when the Lord Mayor of London is elected and used to be an informal administrative new year: annual rents due, annual employment terms expired, local courts held, and new school terms began after the harvest was completed.
In the Kitchen
In the Garden Most hyacinths need around ten weeks in the cool and dark and then three in the light – so now’s the time to plant the bulbs if you want them ready for Christmas flowering! Bring them out of the gloom when the shoots are an inch or so tall. If you have any potatoes left out, now’s the time
to dig them up before the slugs get to them. Put netting over any ponds to catch the leaves as they fall and plant the spring bulbs along with any new perennials: the soil is still warm, but there’s generally more rainfall. Don’t forget to keep deadheading annuals and perennials – they’ve still got time to flower! To help with the development of buds for next year, keep the rhododendrons and camellias watered well.
Eating goose on Michaelmas Day was as common as turkey is now to Christmas. As fewer people became linked to the harvest collections with the advent of machinery, goose on the 29th also became rarer – although in recent years it’s seen a rise in the tradition again. Why not treat yourselves on the last Saturday of the month? Arriving in huge quantities this month will be the damsons. Rich and sour and plum like, they’ll appear all at once in the hedgerows. Ensure that you get them preserved quickly though, as they spoil after a couple of days. Damson jam is a well known commodity, but why not also try some damson cheese? Slowly simmer 2kg damsons with a splash of water until they’re completely soft, then rub through a sieve to remove the skins and stones. For every 500ml of puree add 350g of sugar and simmer, stirring regularly for up to an hour until it’s thick enough to draw a line in the bottom of the pan. Pour into oiled plastic containers to set and then slice and serve with cheeses.
Facts and Figures We lose another one hour and fifty-three minutes this month, making the day length less than twelve hours and on the equinox, the day and night are the same length. The sun will rise precisely due east and set due west. Allegedly the average sea temperature should still be rising at 17.3°, but this year has proved well above average, with the south coast being particularly pleasant. September’s birth flower is both the Forget-Me-Not [Myositis] and Aster: patience, daintiness and
remembrance. The birthstone is the Sapphire. Present in almost every colour, it’s most desirable in a rich blue colour. It represents loyalty and trust. Those born in September will either be a Virgo or Libra, and will share their birthday month with HRH The Duke of Sussex (15th), Idris Elba (6th), Serena Williams (26th), Hugh Grant (9th) and Catherine ZetaJones (25th).
Have a wonderful September!

MONEY MATTERS
Melanie Richardson highlights how changes to tax could affect you and your finances, including Capital Gains Tax Payment on Account and the introduction of Making Tax Digital
LET’S TALK TAX
T
ax is often used as a tool by the government to influence and change our habits. Take the recent extra duty on sugar based soft drinks as an example. The medical profession advised that sugar based soft drinks were contributing towards child obesity and so the Government imposed an 18p/24p levy on these drinks, effectively giving a win win situation – the increased cost would perhaps stop so many sugar drinks being bought and if it didn’t then the money raised would help pay for breakfast and sports clubs for the children to increase exercise. Well that was the general idea anyway, whereas what appears to have happened is that some drinks manufacturers have reduced the amount of sugar in the drinks to avoid their products attracting the levy! A similar levy to stop us buying so many plastic bags also seems to have been quite a success, certainly in my house we now try to remember to take bags with us when we go shopping. But tax is changing in other ways as well, and possibly the biggest upheaval since the introduction of self assessment in 1996 is the introduction of Making Tax Digital – a part of which is coming in without a lot of fanfare and could come as an unexpected shock to the unprepared. Capital Gains Tax Payment on Account legislation will affect those selling residential property from April 2020. At the moment, Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is payable on
the 31 January after the end of the tax year. So, if you sold an asset on say 6 April 2018, the tax arising on the gain on that sale, would not be due for payment until 31 January 2020 – a full 20 months after you have received the money. If however, you sold an asset on 5 April 2018 , you would pay your capital gains tax on 31 January 2019 just ten months after the sale. To the government, it means a substantial delay in the receipt of what are probably significant tax receipts, as most people will try to maximise the length of time they have to pay. From April 2020, the new legislation will require those people selling residential property to estimate and pay their CGT within 30 days after the sale has completed. It remains to be seen whether lawyers will be required to deduct this from completion proceeds! The main problem however, apart from a cashflow issue is that capital gains tax is an annual tax and is payable at different rates depending on that individual’s actual annual income. This means that you may not be able to estimate your CGT liability accurately before the tax year has ended. In addition, many people will make several disposals in a year, so the situation could easily arise whereby a capital gains tax payment on account is paid at the beginning of the year, only for the taxpayer to dispose of assets later in the year at a capital loss. As you can offset any capital gains against similar losses, some taxpayers will find that they have overpaid their tax liability for the year and then will have to wait to get a refund until after their tax return has been prepared and processed. Making Tax Digital is going to be applied to all parts of the tax system eventually, and everyone will be required to account for their tax on a quarterly basis – seems like a pretty good money spinner for the Treasury! As ever, if you have any queries on tax or accounting matters, please get in touch. l Money Matters is written by Melanie Richardson - Managing Partner Swindells LLP Chartered Accountants & Chartered Tax Advisers Tel: 01825 763366 As individual circumstances vary considerably from person to person, the views expressed in this article are meant only as a general guide, and any specific advice required should be sought from your own professional adviser or by contacting the writer at her place of work.
