Editor’s Comment
We hope you enjoy this special Remembrance issue. With so many local Remembrance Day services unable to take place in their usual format, we wanted to pay our respects. Tony Snelling has shared his incredible experiences of Artic and Atlantic Convoys and D-Day. Bob Marchant recalls working with Archibald McIndoe, the pioneering burns surgeon. We also highlight the amazing roles of some animals during wartime. Finally... dare I say it? Christmas is creeping up on us, so we have ideas for decorations and gifts to get you in the mood. Sit back, relax and enjoy!

U-BOATS, CONVOYS & D-DAY Ever heard the story about the man who was at D-Day, on the Arctic Convoys, Atlantic Convoys, and helped thwart the challenge of the U-Boats? This is it; this is Tony Snelling’s story, as told to a fascinated Robert Veitch
“I
really wanted to be in the Fleet Air Arm,” revealed 97 year old Tony Snelling as we sat in the garden of his Horsham home. Born in Twickenham on All Fool’s Day 1923, he was a twin. “Dad’s brother didn’t survive childbirth,” his daughter Sue Holmes revealed, “Dad lived a life for both of them.” Aged 18, Tony was conscripted in 1942, undertaking six weeks training at HMS Ganges in Essex, before transferring to Chatham to await drafting. “The food in Chatham was pretty appalling, with so many to feed they would start cooking the day before.”
Goose under Captain Walker. It was brand new, still in dry dock when I arrived. She looked terribly small.” She was a convoy defence vessel, a hunter-killer of U-boats. “Antisubmarine training
took place in the Inner Hebrides, under the tutelage of a Vice-Admiral nicknamed the “Terror of Tobermory.” Active service began on Atlantic Convoy HX 236 in May 1943, escorting merchant vessels sailing from New York. Similar support roles would continue throughout the summer “We slept in hammocks,” Tony recalled. “The weather could be terrible. It was scary at times.” HMS Wild Goose escorted landing craft at the Italian landings of September 1943. “The Mediterranean seemed so warm after the north. The Italians seemed short of soap so we exchanged Cameo. I got one for my mother

in One’ mission that sunk six U-boats. On return to Liverpool the crew welcomed King George VI on board. Tony ‘s final deployment on HMS Wild Goose was Arctic Convoy JW 58. Arctic Convoys sailed to Soviet ports; primarily Murmansk in the Barents Sea, and Arkhangelsk in the White Sea. 78 took place, involving 1,400 merchant ships. 85 merchant vessels and 16 Royal Navy ships were lost. In summer when ice floes permitted convoys ran north of Jan Mayen Island and Bear Island in the Greenland Sea. Winter routes were south of the islands in the Norwegian Sea, but closer to waters under Nazi control. Arctic Convoy JW 58 left Liverpool on March 27th with 47 merchant vessels. “We were led by an icebreaker after fuelling at Reykjavik. Apart from some air attacks it was fairly quiet,” he remembered. “It was very cold. On deck you dare not touch the boat without

and for my sister, but that was after things had quietened down.” In November 1943, HMS Wild Goose provided escort cover across the Bay of Biscay for Convoy SL 140, which had departed from Freetown in Sierra Leone and was met at Gibraltar. The Nazis had U-boat bases in Western France at Saint Nazaire, Lorient, La Rochelle, and Bordeaux, “so we tried to stop them getting out to the convoys.”
“It was rough in the Bay of Biscay but the worst weather ever was off Cape Wrath in Scotland. On a small ship in a large storm, unless it was absolutely essential you kept off deck. It was virtually awash; you were almost guaranteed to go over the side. The screws of the ship emerged from the water, into the troughs of the greatest waves.” In January 1944 HMS Wild Goose helped escort Convoy SL 147 across the Atlantic and became involved in the ‘Six Arctic ice floes

gloves for fear of freezing to it.” Ice formations on the foredeck could affect stability. With a lot of ice, the ship could become top heavy. “To abandon ship in the Arctic was a death sentence.” “Arriving in Murmansk on April 4th, we spent two or three days ashore, they were friendly people but the language was a bit difficult.” The return convoy RA 58 sailed to Loch Ewe, near Ullapool. JW58 / RA58 was hailed as a very successful expedition and the last for many months, as Naval eyes turned south, towards the beaches of Normandy. “I judge myself lucky to have survived,” he recalls with a calm eloquence, “I saw ships sink.” It seemed he was revisiting the inner turmoil in his mind while he talked. “I was relieved when it was all over.” Winston Churchill described the Arctic Convoys as ‘the worst journey in the world.’

the invasion, but he got the tides wrong and they were stranded. Tony recalled D-day, “We sailed to Normandy early on June 6th 1944, to Arromanches (Gold Beach), escorting landing craft. I won’t say it was hell, but there was flack everywhere, in the direction of the major ships and the return from the German turrets. We could see landing craft going in. We didn’t judge the return journey times correctly, and had to borrow bicycles to get back for embarkation. We left the bicycles outside the Police Station.” After the war in November 1945, Tony crewed HMS Tyler to the naval shipyard in Philadelphia, returning her to her owners. He remembered, “The Americans were exceedingly kind, I have some very happy memories of the way we were treated.” LIFE AFTER 1945 Tony left the Royal Navy to join Southern Railway. “We lived in Kingston-Upon-Thames, then Catford, moving to Horsham in 1968. ”I ended On an Arctic Convoy

Wednesday 2nd December at 7.00pm
We recognise that those people who have been bereaved while funerals have been subject to restrictions have often found those limitations difficult and so we feel it is more important than ever to join together to honour and commemorate with those who have lost loved ones. Equally, in this most difficult of years, a time for reflection for all of us seems especially important. Part of the service will be interactive and we will be sending out a free pack to those who would like to join and take part in our Ceremony of Remembrance from the comfort of their own home. up on the board of British Rail and received free lifetime first class travel – which has proved useful with post-war reunions.” In 2013, 120,000 members of the Arctic Convoys (or their next of kin) received Arctic Star medals from the Ministry of Defence, which were presented with the white beret Tony delights in wearing. In June 2014 Tony met Prince Charles and Camilla on the Normandy beaches for the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. That summer he also met the Queen at a Buckingham Palace WWII Veterans Garden Party. Also in 2014 Tony received the Russian Ushakov Medal, awarded ‘for courage and bravery’ in defence of the Soviet Union in maritime theatres. “I received it at the Russian Embassy Arromanches
She was a convoy defence vessel, a hunter-killer of U-boats from the ambassador. Plenty of vodka was drunk!” He then attended the unveiling of the Arctic Convoy Memorial in St. Petersburg. After former President François Hollande pledged to honour all surviving British veterans who had helped liberate France; Tony received the Légion d’honneur at the French Ambassador’s residence in Kensington in 2015. In November 2015 Tony caught pneumonia in Moscow, during a visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and
eternal flame. After hospital treatment he stayed at the British Embassy before repatriation. A London based Russian banker paid the medical bill which was several thousand pounds. “Arctic Convoy crews are fêted in Russia and we were ever so grateful,” his daughter Sue remembers. On the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, Tony attended the National Commemorative Event at Southsea before departing for Dunkirk onboard a cruise liner. “As we departed Portsmouth we passed aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. Her crew and Prime Minister Teresa May were on the flight deck, saluting us. It was very moving.” At Arromanches, “The most moving thing was the red Poppies on Gold Beach.” His daughter Sue noted, “President Macron shook Dad’s hand and thanked him.” On the way back the cruise liner diverted to Dover because of storms although Tony quite enjoyed it, “Even now, I love the rough seas.” Tony reflected on Remembrance Sunday trips to the Cenotaph, “I used to go but you don’t see so many white berets these days.” Is there really a girl in every port? “Yes” he laughed “but you didn’t get much time. Liverpool and Belfast could be great after six weeks at sea!“ he chortled with a twinkle in his eye. l

MST honours Remembrance Day by releasing archives of RD Waters’ WWII diaries
To honour this very important month, Sussex based timber merchant, Mid-Sussex Timber (MST) is sharing some of its history, with diaries of their founder, R.D Waters (AKA “Tiny” during his time as a POW) from WWII, alongside press cuttings and telegrams in aid of The Poppy Appeal. As RDW was already a member of the Territorial Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in The Royal Sussex Regiment, he was called to serve in 1939 in the British Expeditionary Force in France. After the battle of Dunkirk, RDW was reported missing and was believed to be injured. However, on August 17th, 1940 (seen in some of the clippings), he was officially reported as a prisoner of war by The Red Cross. He then became POW number 892 and spent the next five years as a POW being marched from camp to camp in very poor conditions. Fortunately, RDW was one of the lucky POW’s who was able to return home, returning in 1945. He returned to work and continued to run the company for many years, inspiring future generations, with his sons and grandchildren becoming part of the business. In aid of remembrance month and in honour of their Grandfather’s story, all the company’s lorries will be decorated with poppies and all staff will be wearing a poppy for the month of November. There will also be collection boxes for the Royal British Legion in each of the four branches. The company is encouraging people to head over to our website to find out more information about the history of Mid-Sussex Timber, and see images, diary entries and newspaper cuttings about R.D. Waters’ journey of survival through WWII.

oving house is a challenge and Gloria Stewart, garden designer and dealer in French brocante and textiles, has a talent for it. She anticipates where furniture will be placed in new rooms and where lamps, pictures and china will be hung or displayed. Within days of moving, her house looks like home and she is thinking about what to do with the garden. This foresight has been honed by the experience of restoring a number of period houses in France with her musician husband, Eric. They lived in France for 30 years, and when they decided to return to England in 2014, they rented while they looked for somewhere more permanent. “We agreed it had to be a period property with views,” Gloria says, “and this area on the borders of Kent and Sussex where we’d lived before moving to France, had the additional appeal for me in its proximity to the great gardens I love to visit.”

❄ The instinct which directs where pieces will be placed in each room is often about connections
The coach house they found in the summer of 2015 is down a quiet lane and, as Gloria describes it, “is sandwiched between two glorious houses in an enclave of Tudor architecture.” As their children are adult, downsizing had crossed their minds, but in France they had had the luxury of space in houses they had restored and realised how much they appreciate having rooms with different functions, for sitting, reading, watching television, a study for Eric and, high on Gloria’s wish list, a separate laundry room.
Truffle, the family’s terrier/Jack Russell cross, prepares to take over a sitting room chair. Its colours and design are echoed in the flower paintings above that Gloria found rolled up at an antiques fair

The coach house, enlarged some years ago by incorporating the gardener’s cottage next door, has it all. With five bedrooms, inner hall, sitting room, study and a well-planned galley kitchen, the house had been refurbished with an appealing simplicity, leaving the Stewarts with the unusual prospect of no immediate refurbishment to plan. But it was the large conservatory that sealed the deal for them. “It’s the link between the coach house and the rooms in the old

cottage,” Gloria explains, “but most of all it’s light and looks out onto the garden. There is underfloor heating so it’s warm all through winter and it’s a great asset at Christmas. We use it as a dining room and it’s high so, at last, somewhere to fit our tall French Directoire painted cabinet that had been in store since we’d moved back from France. It’s where I put collections of china and glassware.” Gloria’s other collections extend from antique teddy bears and miniature furniture to paintings and textiles, and they provide the backdrop she needs. The familiarity of the pieces she loves is almost more important to her, she concedes, than the architecture of a place. “What I have enjoyed most about having an English house again has been collecting English china, embroideries and paintings to combine with our French and Swedish furniture.” The instinct which directs where pieces will be placed in each room is often about connections. Against the brick wall in the conservatory she has hung only flower paintings, and she loves finding

fabric for a chair that coincides in some way with paintings on the wall above. Sometimes it is nothing more than the curl of a stem or a similar flowerhead shared between the two. Symmetry is crucial too, with early plates hung on the walls, often in relation to pictures with a shared theme. “Otherwise,” Gloria observes, “these special plates would be stacked in cupboards and noone would see them.” Their extendable French oak table is a perfect fit for the conservatory and is in its element at Christmas. Gloria always lays it beautifully before the family arrives to share the celebration. It is a task she finds too enjoyable to hurry. napkin for each place setting. French blue and white nineteenth century bowls for hors d’oeuvres sit on top of eighteenth-century white pearl-edged china plates. “If I see little plants such as hellebores, I’ll put them on the table, otherwise it will be sprays of bay, fir and berries with candles.” The height of the conservatory also allows Gloria to have a tall Christmas tree and her decorations are the traditional blend of green, red and white with a few new baubles added each year. “Everything has to look natural,” she says, “and decorations in the rest of the house tend to follow through what I’ve put on the Christmas table. I use greenery I find in the garden and the woods to drape over paintings, there’s never anything gaudy.”

The family observes an established routine on Christmas Day, coming down for tea and toast to open presents in turn while listening to carols. After a good walk, lunch is smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and a glass of champagne. “Then I begin cooking,” Gloria says. “We stop to listen to the Queen and have the big festive meal around 5 o’clock.” Evening traditions include games, especially charades if their grandson is with them. “As the day winds down we often watch ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ an old black and white film with James Stewart – no relation. It’s so sad but has a happy ending and we all cry! Don’t worry,” Gloria adds, laughing, “everyone dries their eyes and agrees it’s a great way to round off a perfect day.” l Photos: Narratives/Jody Stewart Text and Styling: Narratives/Celia Rufey

A Skip In
THE RIGHT DIRECTION We all have to deal with waste, it’s a fact of life, but what’s the environmentally friendly way to deal with those things that won’t fit in the kerbside bin? Allan Brown at KSD supplied Robert Veitch with the answers and revealed how easy it is to order a skip online
“W
e believe we have the cheapest skips in Sussex and cover the largest geographic area,” said a proud Allan Brown, Director of KSD Environmental Services. He’s not kidding, because the area that they cover extends from Eastbourne along the coast to Littlehampton, and inland as far north as Crawley and Horsham, stretching out to towns like Uckfield, Hailsham, Haywards Heath and everywhere in between. KSD maintain a network partnership across the UK, involving 140 other similar companies. The crux of this is a simple realisation; the rubble that needs removing from old Auntie Flo’s extension in Felixstowe can be booked through KSD here at home. The company has recently opened a new 3½ acre Waste Transfer Station and Recycling facility on North Quay Road
A mind-boggling 98.3% of waste is recycled
36 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2020
in Newhaven. A bigger, more efficient site than their old one means the landfill diversion rate has increased, and even more waste is being recycled. Currently a mind-boggling 98.3% of waste is recycled, and that number has been over 95% for several years now, but it’s not enough for Allan because “we strive for better.” The Newhaven site is home to 36 full time staff. As well as processing skips and arranging skip hire, the talented team also service the vehicles, maintain the equipment, drive the lorries and answer the phones. Skips are emptied out and processed at the Newhaven facility, sorted by a series of mobile and static mechanical plant. As well as conveyors, sensors and metal
detectors there are dedicated staff at picking stations, all looking to extract the recyclables. Little waste goes to landfill almost 99% is recycled. Wood, plastic, cardboard and paper are sorted out and moved on for secondary processing. That wardrobe unit you’re looking to replace may well have a second life as a chest of drawers. Inert waste like soil and hardcore can also be recycled. Processed soil will be recycled to become a key component of compost. Hardcore is crushed to become part of the building industry or transportation network; recycled into a second life as Type I or Type II aggregate or chippings. Bulky waste includes; beds, sofas, wardrobes, large TV’s, white goods, even the garden swing the children have long since outgrown. Bulky collections are done with a ‘man and a van’ approach and a pre-booked appointment. Whether it’s bulky waste, or home and garden
within a week. About 70% of the work undertaken is commercial collections from small to medium enterprises, but Allan is keen to increase the 30% share that’s currently taken by residential and private clients because hiring a skip is a straightforward process with KSD. Telephone the helpline or book online in a few simple steps; both are quick and user friendly. Book by midday and the skip should be with you during the next working day. Allan was keen to reveal “There are no rental fees with KSD, whether you have the skip for a week or a month, the price is the same.”KSD skips are available in a wide range of capacities from 4–16 cubic yard household skips to 20, 35 and 40 cubic yard roll-on roll-off (RORO) commercial containers. HOUSE & HOME
As the first frosts of winter bring a chill to the darkness, Robert Veitch takes a look at some ways to bring a little light into your life this season
WATT THE HECK!

or anyone who works regular office hours we’re entering that point in the year when we only see our home in daylight during the weekend. For shift workers, gardeners, builders, dog walkers, and parents at the school gates, it’s already obvious longer nights will be with us until the first glimmer and shimmer of lengthening days at the end of January. Bleak as it seems, it’s not all bad. It’s time to get some sparkles into your life, a little colour too. It’s time to shine! Thanks to advances in lighting technology, the rise of the LED offers lighting designers a range of creative possibilities throughout the house, and garden too. When I was young, exterior Christmas lighting was little more than a line or two of fairy lights strung around the porch, or nearest tree if the flex reached far enough. These days, they’re an exhibitionists dream, or an artist’s palette of delight – it really depends on how you view your ability to decorate your home. Consider opting for some subtle
solar spike lights in the garden, looking like a row of candles – a puritanical spartan minimalistic look, but good all the same. A row of curtain string lights brighten an internal window frame, chillax the vibe indoors and show seasonal solidarity to those outside. You could push that festive boat out a little further and really let loose. If you want the Frog Chorus in your garden, you’ll probably find an inflatable version somewhere online. The neighbours might not appreciate hearing Paul McCartney on constant rotation, but

hey it’s almost Christmas, so anything goes. Maybe. Solar fairy lights and solar lanterns add a little colour to your holly, camelia, azalea, or that onetime Christmas tree from 1987 that’s now grown to a prodigious height in the garden – Yes, the one the neighbour mentions from time to time in the same sentence as ‘dark’ and ‘lack of sunlight’ – brighten their life this season. JOHN BROOMFIELD When the family pig farm was no longer viable, John Broomfield got into his van and trusted his instinct to initiate another venture. We packed up Robert Veitch and sent him to meet the family, to find out more about John Broomfield Removals and what they’re up to now
I
t was an idyllic autumn day beneath glorious blue skies when I met mother and son, Liz and Will Broomfield in their home, at the foot of the South Downs, close to Ditchling. The Broomfield family farm was once a pig farm, handed down through generations of the family. But the pork market fell away, making it a sad day when the old business finally came to an end. Disappointed but unfazed, Liz’s husband, John Broomfield, began to deliver agricultural items for other local farmers. As a ‘man and a van’ he used a white long wheelbase transit and made a success of this new enterprise. John soon found himself moving the odd bit of furniture and the occasional student to university with the van full of belongings. Liz recalled, “The trouble was, John began to get good at moving things, then he became too good at moving things and the enterprise began to prosper.” John Broomfield Removals was established in 1998, the birth of a new business venturing into house removals full time. Since then the business has blossomed and they’ve been moving
42 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2020
things for over twenty years. When John Broomfield sadly passed away Liz and her eldest son Joe took on the business in 2014 and continued working in the same way that John had built it up, and of course, still with his name. After helping out at weekends and during school holidays Will came on board full time in 2017. John Broomfield Removals’ reputation in the industry is generated from the hard work of friendly, professional staff and their highquality service. “We have lots of repeat customers, which accounts for about 70% of our work,” noted Will. That original transit van is longgone; these days the company run a fleet of five 3½ tonne Luton vans. Each
He became too good at moving things and the enterprise began to prosper
has a capacity of around 550-600 cubic feet, with a payload of 1,000 – 1,200kg and a tail-lift. The vehicles are clean and well maintained. Will explained the company is far from local these days “We cover the entire county but go well beyond the boundary as well.” So, if you’re planning to leave beautiful Sussex and move to North Yorkshire, John Broomfield will get you there. Alternatively, if Great Uncle Felix is selling up and returning to Sussex from France, John Broomfield will bring his belongings home. John Broomfield has been offering a packing and unpacking service for over 10 years and with highly experienced staff they can keep your belongings safe door to door. Will explains “We try to recycle packaging as many times as we can. Bubble wrap may gradually lose its bubbles, but it remains a useful filler. Our cardboard boxes can be used time and again before being recycled.” Liz explained “We have a brilliant team, they’re hard-working, well presented, friendly and knowledgeable with a good set of customer service skills.” She was keen to point out a family atmosphere still prevails, at the core, “everyone is round the farmhouse table at breakfast time, having a tea or coffee to get the day going.” Working alongside Joe, is long serving Tom Dryer, who has just racked up a decade of service. “A large part of our success is down to his go-ahead approach and forward thinking,” said Will. “Tom and Joe are really admired by the rest of the team” as Will was keen to point out. “They both worked with my Dad and have the John Broomfield DNA, they helped lay down the foundations of what the business has become.”
Both Joe and Tom are well placed to advise on the transportation of delicate items like antiques, as well as bulky items like pianos, double-fronted fridgefreezers, ride-on lawn mowers, L-shape sofas or even grandfather clocks. The rest of the hard working team is made up of Eugene Sibanda, Adam May, Craig Cohen and Paul Dench who is affectionately known as Grandad. “Paul is really the ace up our sleeve” declared Will, “he has his own 7½ tonne van which we sometimes use.
Recently the company opened a twin-storage facility. The external element consists of very smart looking shipping containers, which are accessible to lessees 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The internal element is a new barn, which is populated with 35sq ft panelled wood secure storage containers. These are kept above ground level and are watertight. The barn itself is secured with shutters and lock-safe doors, watched over at all times by state of the art CCTV. The barn is open from 8am – 4:30pm Monday to Friday and from 8am – 2pm on Saturdays. Both facilities are available on weekly, monthly, or annual leases. The site is fully insured too. So far households, businesses, students at university, folk who are travelling long term, downsizers and homeowners undergoing renovation projects have used the facility. The company offer a house clearance service, linked to St Peter and St James Hospice, who take all the saleable furniture for resale in their
shops. It’s a charity close to the families heart “Dad, spent his final days there,” remembered Will poignantly. Liz enthused on the company link to the annual ‘Wrapping Up Brighton and Hove’ campaign each November. “Joe assists the charity, driving one of our vans, helping deliver second-hand coats to the homeless with fellow supporter Rob Griffiths.” Last year, over 2,000 coats were handed out.
There’s far less stress when it’s left to the best Being community minded, the Broomfield’s store equipment for Ditchling Village Fair and Hurstpierpoint St Lawrence Fair. They also sponsor Ditchling Scarecrows thanks to a family connection via John Broomfield’s sisters, Susie Marshall and Margaret Bovill. Proving local & independent shopping works! ROOM on the Row was started three years ago by husband and wife team in the heart of the bustling village of Forest Row. The couple’s aim was to bring stylish and contemporary lighting, furniture, home accessories and gifts to their customers, providing high-quality products at an affordable price. With influences from Scandinavia & Europe, mixed with home-grown talent from around the UK, Room on the Row is proud to support artisans who have originality and passion about what they do. Owners, Sarah and Gordon, offer a unique retail experience, matched with a friendly welcome and exceptional customer service. “Our customers often walk through the door and remark on the relaxed and calm atmosphere of the shop, arranged in such a way that it offers them ideas and inspiration on how they might enhance their own homes” explains Sarah. Whether you are looking for a special piece of furniture or you want to spend £20 on a gift, there is a wide range of products, including
jewellery, scented candles & diffusers, as well as cards and gift wrap making it an easy choice for shopping locally. Recently, the couple have expanded their business by creating ‘Interiors by Room on the Row’. Gordon’s 25 year experience in interior design and project management lends itself perfectly to working with clients to help create living spaces which reflect their own personalities and requirements, bringing to life their visions. Collaborating with a Sussex-based joinery company they are creating bespoke kitchens, bedrooms, living and work spaces – a taster of this can be seen in the shop. Gordon believes listening to the client’s brief, providing attention to detail and giving the time it deserves is fundamental for a successful outcome. So, whether you’re looking to enhance your home with some new furniture and home accessories or are looking for inspiration for a larger project to transform your living spaces then look no further than Room on the Row.

Thrifty Decorating Use a mix of random items to make a very personal festive table display. A Christmas tree cake decoration, patterned paper cups, cake cases and cones all look lovely with candlelight and a sprinkling of fake snow.

A Natural Twist with Baubles
Turn plain glass baubles into simple rustic decorations for the house
Get creative with natural twines and raffia and turn plain glass baubles into simple rustic decorations for the house. Tie small clippings of spruce or fir to green garden twine and attach them to the top of the baubles or, as an alternative, fix mini natural raffia wreaths made by using four to five strands twisted into a circle with a bow at the top. Attach them just above each bauble with a generous looped bow of twine. Finish by adding a light sprinkle of fake snow.

54 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2020
Candlesticks made from silver birch bark filled with moss make unusual natural candleholders for Christmas. Take one piece of silver birch bark and cut it to the required size with a strong pair of florist scissors or a craft knife. Roll it into a cylinder and secure it with coloured florist wire and natural ribbon tied in a double knot. Fill the centre with moss and place a church candle centrally, wrapped at the bottom with foil to stop the moss from burning. Finish it off with a spruce sprig with a wooden bead threaded through the bottom and poked into the ribbon tie.

Christmas Pots Give terracotta pots a quick festive makeover by wrapping spruce foliage around the outside of each pot. To fix in place, lie each pot on its side placing the first sprig and a length of strong garden twine on the underside of the pot. Add two more sprigs on each side then draw them together and tie the twine tightly around the pot. Once the sprigs are quite secure, fan them around so they are nice and even. Fill the centre with a chunky church candle, wrapping the base with foil to prevent burning the inside of the pot. Secure it centrally with moss. Place the pot on a table and add a sprinkle of fake snow and a pine cone or twiggy branch to finish.

Window Garlands Create a delicate spruce sprig and cone garland to hang at your window, made with cheery red and white bakers twine, wired cones and bunches of spruce sprigs. Tie bunches of spruce and wired cones together with fine florist wire. Then attach each sprig to a length of baker’s twine with about a 20-30cm gap between each sprig. Add a little bow with the twine at the end of each cone for an extra decorative touch.

A New Take on Wreaths
Make an unusual alternative to a traditional wreath
Use an old wire coat-hanger to make an unusual alternative to a traditional wreath. Cut small sprigs of fur or spruce foliage and using fine florist wire, wind the wire around the bottom of the first sprig and then attach it to top of the hanger. Then using the same process take another wired sprig and attach it next to the first sprig, overlapping slightly behind the first so the wire is disguised. Repeat the process until you’ve covered the whole hanger with foliage in a clockwise fashion. Tie three small cones together with the florist wire and attach to the neck of the hanger. Finish it off with a natural ribbon and twine tie for additional decoration.

BLOOMING TIMES
A selection of berried shrubs will bring colour to your garden during the dreariest time of year, writes Flo Whitaker
Berried TREASURE W
inter-berried shrubs quietly blend into the background during summer, but they steal the limelight at this time of year. The viburnum family is a large one, with both evergreen and deciduous forms. They carry attractive berries from autumn and some varieties also produce nectar-rich flowers during winter, providing wildlife with a source of high energy food when the going gets tough. Easy-going and unfussy; there are viburnums to suit all locations. Carefully research before you buy and give thought to the space you can offer as different varieties vary greatly in height, spread and vigour. They can be very long-lived and a mature viburnum that hasn’t been disfigured with frequent and frantic hacking back is a splendid sight. Varieties of viburnum opulus, (often called Guelder Rose or Snowball Bush) are, perhaps, the best of all; with showy, hydrangea-like blooms in spring, followed by glossy, magical fruits in autumn that look for all the world as if they’ve leapt out of the pages of a child’s fairy tale book.

Like viburnums, the holly family, (Ilex) is an extensive one, so choose your varieties carefully. Most hollies are dioecious; meaning that the male and female reproductive parts occur on separate plants, so plants of both
Cotoneaster, Berberis and Snow Berry are tough, dependable shrubs that have much to offer sexes are required in order to produce berries. An added complication is that no thought has gone in to the naming of varieties to reflect this important fact; for instance, Golden King is actually female, whereas Silver Queen is a male variety. However, there are a few ‘selffertile’ forms such as Pyramidalis and J. C. van Tol that will reliably produce a good crop of berries, so if you only have space for one plant, (or your brain cells have just melted), it’s probably simpler
to choose a self-fertile variety. Phew! Cotoneaster, berberis and symphoricarpos, (Snow Berry) are rather out of fashion these days, but they are tough, dependable shrubs that have much to offer. In spring, their tiny flowers are adored by pollinating insects - in autumn, their vibrant berries are a feast for many birds and animals. Symphoricarpos bears unusual pearlescent berries and will grow pretty much anywhere, including dry shade. You’ll either love or hate callicarpa; its mad, high-octane display greatly divides opinion. Refined gardeners with delicate dispositions regard callicarpa’s startling purple/mauve berries as “vulgar” and “plasticlooking”. Ouch. The aptly-named variety, Profusion, provides an autumnal bonus (or horror, depending on your point of view) of golden leaves highlighted with pink veining; a colour combination that’ll have members of the good taste brigade running for the hills. Birds, not having the benefit of sunglasses, usually give callicarpa a wide berth, so the berries often persist for months. I’ll leave you to decide if this is a good thing … l

NATURE appetite and development are slowed down while they rest in wall crevices or bug hotels until temperatures rise again. Amphibians become dormant over the winter; frogs and newts rest at the bottom of ponds whilst common toads tend to prefer a damp and dark residence under a pile of wet leaves. Activity levels in other animals such as badgers, rabbits, shrews and mice may enter a ‘torpor’ which is a state of inactivity but for shorter periods. The true hibernating mammals; hedgehogs, dormice and bats, tend to retreat to their boltholes during October and November. Hibernation involves extreme slowing of the heart rate, breathing and lowering of body temperature and metabolism to survive long periods without food. Sometimes these animals wake up for a toilet break or to find food, or to prevent freezing to death from ice crystals in the blood when the temperature gets dangerously low.
The only mammals that truly hibernate are hedgehogs, dormice and bats Colder weather and longer nights make Adele Trathan long to cosy up at home and shut the world away. Some animals don’t have quite the same luxury and must hibernate during winter. Adele suggests some ways we can help these creatures survive, to emerge again in the spring
Hedgehogs prepare for hibernation by overeating and generating fat reserves, before seeking a quiet spot to spend the winter. This could be a pile of logs, compost heap, or under a garden shed. Sometimes they build their own shelter known as a ‘hibernaculum’ from twigs, leaves and even feathers. Dormice eat so much towards the end

n the UK, the only mammals that truly hibernate are hedgehogs, dormice and bats. However, many reptiles, amphibians and some insects including certain species of bees and butterflies also have forms of hibernation. Reptiles including snakes are cold blooded and poikilothermic, relying on the sun to regulate their body temperature. To survive the winter, they go into a hibernation like state known as brumation. Insects can go into diapause, a state of stasis whereby

of summer they grow to twice their normal size but can lose half their body weight during hibernation. From November to April, bats will search for hollow trees, roofs, caves and bat boxes to overwinter, slowing their breathing down to as few as five breaths per minute in order to survive. HOW CAN WE HELP OUR HIBERNATORS? We can help by providing a designated haven in our gardens. A bug hotel

or a bat box can be placed in a quiet sheltered area. Stacked logs, branches, bricks, stones and piles of leaves become winter havens when left untouched until spring. Check bonfires thoroughly before lighting to be sure there are no animals sheltering within. Clear decaying plant matter from ponds to prevent poisonous levels of gas building up and use a floating ball to limit freezing over. If the pond
Did you know? Until the 1990s there was no word for baby hedgehogs. The word ‘hoglet’ or even ‘hedgehoglet” is now a colloquial term. The Irish word for hedgehog is ‘gainneog’, which means ‘ugly little thing.’ Now that’s just harsh!
does freeze over, shockwaves from smashing the ice can injure or kill the inhabitants, instead melt a small hole with the bottom of a hot pan. HEDGEHOG PRESERVATION According to The British Hedgehog Preservation Society the population in rural areas has halved since 2000 and needs all the help we can give. Perimeter fencing in residential gardens reduces free movement,
but holes of 13cm (6”) square at the bottom of fences allow hedgehogs to pass through on their nocturnal rambles. Lift any pea netting off the ground so they don’t get tangled up. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (www. britishhedgehogs.org.uk) can provide information on building a hedgehog home. In the run up to hibernation, this can provide safe accessible shelter; in the summer it may also become a nursery. If you choose to provide a supply of food to supplement their diet, meaty cat food, dog food or dry cat biscuits are ideal, and only ever serve water, never milk. l

WALK
EXCEAT WALK Though daylight hours might be shortening and early frosts might be upon us, there’s still time to explore and enjoy the landscape this November, so we sent Robert Veitch to Exceat and the Cuckmere Valley to marvel at the landscape… and get some exercise.
F
rom the car park entrance, turn left onto Litlington Road, arriving almost immediately at the junction with the A259. Cross with care to the pavement opposite, and walk west towards Exceat Bridge. Though noisy, it will not last for long. Across the bridge, follow the pavement for almost 200m, rising up above the rooftops of the cars, culminating at a gap in the hedge on the right. Across the stile, bear left, and follow the line of grassy green carpet around the contour, then alongside the fence, up and over the brow onto Ewe Down. If there are livestock about, please show them all necessary respect. As the drone of traffic becomes distant, the squawking chatter of cormorants, gulls, swans and canada geese inhabit the airspace instead. Follow the grassy green carpet alongside the meanders of the Cuckmere River as far as a pair of upright railway sleepers. Beyond the sleepers, keep right and hug the hawthorn on the dip down into Brock Hole Bottom, then continue up a small incline on the other side. Keep wandering northeast, the river and flood plain on the right and Brock Hole
Down on the left. A pair of gates precede the levee, which leads to another stile at the end of the field. Over the stile, turn left immediately and across the little bridge adorned with a pair of mini-stiles, then follow the ditch to the steps at

the base of the climb. The path up to High and Over looms like a weeping scar in the landscape, bleeding white chalk and impending suffering. It appears more alpine than downland, but will be worth the effort. Sixty-five steps populate the severest section of the ascent, after which it remains steep, but seems a little easier all the same. At the kissing gate, stop, turn, and admire the momentous grandeur of the surroundings. Behind the fence on the right is a geoglyph called the Litlington White Horse. First cut in 1836 it was remade in 1924. Up close, it’s less impressive than it will appear later, from across the valley. After the kissing gate, there are opportunities to rest at one of many memorial benches. The summit of High and Over at 97m (315 feet) is the highest point of the day; it’s marked by a sandstone octagon topped with a memorial to William Rees Jeffreys. Veer right where the path splits, then right at the next split and downhill to a gate onto pasture. Beyond a lonely metal gate, the path sweeps right to a third gate. From here, aim right towards the Cuckmere River to rejoin the levee. Wander upstream past a stile before arriving at the Frog Firle bridge. Across the bridge turn left, then after 50m turn right and follow the path into Litlington. Turn right and November 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 79

ramble along The Street between the pretty flint-walled properties. After 100m, turn left into Clapham Lane, following the tarmac uphill, bearing right onto concrete, which then becomes track. At the farm buildings and silage clamp, keep left. The track eases it’s way to a brow, then down into a hollow and up the other side before curving left towards a gate at the entrance to the rustic autumnal shades of Snap Hill and Friston Forest. Through what is mostly beech
woodland, the path continues downhill to a crossroads in the dry valley of Charleston Bottom. Turn right and amble past (or pick) the last sloe berries of autumn, to the gate. The path on the other side snakes diagonally uphill, past a rowan tree to a gate. Beyond this gate, continue downhill along the path between the trees to the asphalt. Follow the asphalt in the same
direction, bearing right after 250m where the asphalt heads left and uphill. Beyond the ‘Westdean’ fingerpost and the black gate, follow the driveway to the T-junction with the road at the hidden hamlet of Westdean. Turn right and walk past All Saints Church (some of which dates from Saxon times) around the left hand bend to the junction. Across the other side in the woods

Sloe Gin
November is just the right time of year to turn freshly picked sloe berries into a delicious batch of Sloe Gin, just in time for those long winter nights, writes Amy Shephard
I
t’s often said that it’s best to wait until after the first frost of autumn before picking sloe berries, just to ensure the skin of the berry is nice and pliable. But as long as they feel soft when gently squeezed, they can be picked. Pop them in the freezer overnight to help split the skins before you use them. INGREDIENTS 500g (1lb 2oz) of sloe berries 70cl (24fl oz) bottle of gin 250g (9oz) caster sugar
METHOD Pour the ingredients into a large jar. Pop the lid on and tighten to secure, then give it a really good shake.
1
Store in a fridge, or 6 a cool dark area, and consume within a month. Please drink responsibly.
Store and shake the gin 4 for up to three months, or as long you’re prepared to
wait. The longer you leave it, the richer the flavour will be.
Once happy with the 5 taste, strain the mixture through a clean cloth, into bottles.
Store the jar in a cool, 2 dark place, shaking twice a week to infuse the flavours. Taste the gin after four 3 weeks and add more sugar if necessary.

GLUTEN FREE
Carrot Cake This gluten free carrot cake recipe by Jane Freeman uses honey in both the cake mix and cream cheese topping. Why not choose locally produced honey as it supports the local producers and reduces food miles
CAKE INGREDIENTS 2 medium eggs 250g (9oz) coarsely grated carrots 75g (2.5oz) raisins Zest and juice of 1 small orange 35g (1.25oz) honey 125ml (4fl oz) sunflower oil 60g (2oz) soft brown sugar 40g (1.5oz) golden caster sugar 1 teaspoon gluten free baking powder 1½ teaspoon mixed spice 215g (7.5oz) gluten free self-raising flour TOPPING INGREDIENTS 300g (10.5oz) cream cheese 75g (2.5oz) icing sugar 50g (1.75oz) runny honey 20g (1oz) melted butter METHOD Preheat the oven to 180C fan/200C/Gas 6. and orange zest in the honey and orange juice. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and sugars until pale and light, add the oil and stir in the flour, baking powder and mixed spice. Gradually fold the carrot mix into the batter. Divide the mixture equally between the two prepared cake tins. Bake in the centre of the preheated oven for about 17 minutes or until golden and risen, the cake should be springy to touch and a metal skewer inserted in the middle should come out clean. Leave in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. Meanwhile, make the topping. In a bowl mix all the ingredients together and place in the fridge until ready to use. When the carrot cake is cold, use half the topping to sandwich the two cakes together, and the rest to decorate the top. The cake is best eaten on the day it is made.

HELP
FOR THE
HOMELESS Giving Back Crawley a local charity that helps those without a permanent home, has had to be flexible this year, adapting rapidly to changing times as Helen Stockton explains
T
his year has been a difficult one for everyone, but for homeless people it has presented additional
challenges. Giving Back Crawley originated as a charitable act over Ramadan and began with a few people wanting to do something positive and make a difference. Over time, this focused on helping homeless people by providing daily meals and other basic essentials such as clothing, bedding and toiletries. As well as the more visible rough sleepers, the charity also helps the temporarily housed and hidden homeless: those sofa surfing with friends who eventually run out of favours. The charity finds itself helping many younger, single men, but as statistics from Shelter, the national charity for the homeless reveal, one in three working families are only a pay cheque away from losing their homes. Homelessness is a big problem that can affect anyone. As Chairperson of Giving Back Crawley, Joe Dines, explained, in addition to practical help, the charity also offers a point of connection on a regular basis for those without many fixed points in their lives.
90 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2020
“We are a very gentle charity. We don’t demand a great deal from our guests,” said Joe. “We call them our guests, rather than service users, as they come to dinner!” When COVID-19 struck, the charity worked closely with Crawley Borough Council. “We couldn’t have groups
We are very blessed with the support we receive
of people congregating on the streets, and all homeless people were offered temporary accommodation, but many still didn’t have access to kitchens and needed help.” During lockdown, charity volunteers prepared and delivered three meals each day for up to 130 people, which made a total of some 45,000 meals. That’s a lot of cooking! Joe assisted with some of the meal preparations herself, but paid tribute to the efforts of Laura and Donald, both trustees, and a team of volunteers, who all stepped up to the mark. And this work continues to be needed, with the number of homeless people in Crawley rising rapidly. “We are desperate to get back outside and are working with the Council to try and do this safely,” said Joe. The charity has recently bought an eighteen-seater bus, with a view to converting it to provide a food delivery service. They would welcome some help with its conversion and are always pleased to receive donations of tinned or packet food at their collection point in a Crawley Town Centre supermarket. “We are very blessed with the support we receive,” explained Joe, but are always keen to hear from people who’d like to help make a difference too. l For drop off details or more information visit the website www.givingbackcrawley.org or telephone Joe on 07814 171796

GUINEA PIGS & MEMORIES The name Sir Archibald McIndoe may well be forever associated with East Grinstead and his pioneering surgery, though the number of people that worked with him grows ever smaller. Bob Marchant, the Secretary of the Guinea Pig Club looks back on his time with the trailblazer
94 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2020
ARCHIBALD MCINDOE AND THE GUINEA PIGS New Zealand born Archibald McIndoe began his work in East Grinstead, at the Queen Victoria Hospital, at the outbreak of WWII. He was knighted for his pioneering surgery in 1947. The Guinea Pig Club was established informally in 1941 as a support network and social club for those who had undergone reconstructive surgery after enduring burn injuries in the war. Initially with just 39 members, this had grown to 649 by the end of the war. McIndoe was a great endorser
of the Guinea Pig Club as he wanted to make patient’s lives as relaxed and sociable as possible following their surgery. His second wife Constance also supported him and his work with the Guinea Pig Club. The marriage proved a success and her presence at social functions was a great force for good. The advent of the National Health Service in 1948 caused McIndoe great apprehension as he thought it to be a threat to the Queen Victoria Hospital’s independence. Post war he continued to work at the Queen Victoria; as

well as returning to Harley Street to perform cosmetic, plastic surgery, later becoming known for the ‘McIndoe nose.’ Sir Archibald McIndoe attended the opening of ‘The Guinea Pig’ pub in 1957, which was built on the corner of Quarry Rise and Holtye Avenue. He was behind the bar to pour the first pint. Social gatherings finished half a century later in 2007 when there were less than 50 members remaining. Worldwide, just 7 members remain alive today. The pub closed in 2008 and was demolished the following year, but the sign still hangs in East Grinstead Museum. MEMORIES OF WORKING WITH SIR ARCHIBALD 1956-60 Bob Marchant started at the Queen Victoria Hospital, as an Operating Theatre Attendant in 1956. During his RAF medical training Bob had learnt of McIndoe’s work and felt privileged to be offered this role. When Bob arrived at the hospital McIndoe was at the peak of his powers and had a great influence that extended throughout the hospital. Sir Archibald was well built, looking fit and healthy despite his daily workload. He stood about 5’6” and spoke clearly and precisely, without an accent. His hands were broad, and Bob wondered how he could perform such
intricate, fine and delicate surgery. McIndoe’s primary day for operations was Monday, starting at 10am sharp in Theatre 1, which was one of four theatres in the American Wing. Each had a viewing gallery for medical visitors to study and learn from the surgery. There was a smaller theatre for Opthalmic Surgery and a central anaesthetic room, serving all the theatres. McIndoe’s office was at the entrance of the American Wing, close to the X-Ray Department and Out-Patients. It became the consulting room and all the plastic surgeons would meet on Saturday mornings before heading home for the weekend. One of his desks remains in the Surgeons’ Mess to this day. The plastic surgery team was always

ready to work but would grab a coffee in between the sessions of surgery, ward visits and consultations. Sir Archibald would walk down the corridor in his scrubs; a white singlet, black rubber apron, and white calf length wellingtons ready to start surgery, having checked everything was suitably prepared and ready to operate. He liked to utilise the same team; the Theatre Sister and Anaesthetist were a constant. Other consultants followed the same principle. For Bob, that meant he could not land a spot on McIndoe’s team until he was judged to
be ready and able, but luckily this did not take too long. In theatre Bob was always on his toes and alert, ready for anything. McIndoe expected the best from everyone, and after surgery he would thank everyone before leaving for home or his London apartment. Sir Archibald was always willing to pass on his knowledge, either during surgery or afterwards on the blackboard. He was a stickler for tidiness and expected everything to be put away neatly. In those days surgeon’s gloves were washed and baked in special ovens to sterilise them, ready for
use. Sir Archibald would turn a blind eye to the nurses who sometimes used the ovens to dry their own underwear at the weekend. McIndoe worked tirelessly for the hospital and also for the Guinea Pig Club. He made sure his ‘Boys’ in the club received the attention and rewards they deserved. The club has endured for 79 years now.

On 12th April 1960 mid-morning news filtered through to the hospital announcing that aged 59, McIndoe had died in his sleep the previous evening from a heart attack. Bob found it hard to believe he would not see this great surgeon at work again and felt like a black cloud was passing over all of them. The work at the hospital continued uninterrupted as they felt he would have wanted it to carry on. Bob continues to feel honoured to have worked with such a great surgeon and well-respected person, it is something he will never forget. l
How can I replace a gap in my smile? Unsightly gaps in your smile can be replaced by dentures, bridges or implants Practical Benefits of Implants include: • Enhanced Usability – dental implants offer ‘set and forget’ convenience (unlike removable dentures that must be removed/replaced each day) • Enhanced Levels of Oral Health – where necessary, the procedure involves building the surrounding bone and soft tissues (halting and reversing any deterioration) • Enhanced Speech Delivery – dental implants are embedded into the bone and do not move/slip when speaking (eliminating mumbled speech) • Enhanced Mastication (ease of chewing) – dental implants are fixed into the bone and do not slip or move around when eating food
Psychological Benefits of Implants include: • Enhanced Self-Esteem – dental implants can create a smile that results in greater self-confidence during personal interactions • Enhanced Visual Appearance – dental implants have the visual appearance of well looked after natural teeth (resulting in peace of mind that people will not realise the teeth are prosthetic) • Enhanced Comfort – dental implants do not agitate the gums (e.g. removable dentures may cause friction issues)
“O
ther dental practices have treated me as just another patient; that is not the case with Oakmead Dental Care. They have made me feel like a valued individual, with every visit being a welcoming experience. A huge step forward from dreading a visit to the dentist! Proposed treatment plans, including potential options, have been discussed with me as an educated adult, rather than being presented as a fait-accompli. All stages of treatment are fully explained during and after, which makes me feel involved in my own well-being. I am very reassured in their hands and am sure I will continue to be so for many years to come.”

REMEMBRANCE
GREAT & SMALL
On Remembrance Day we honour the lives lost and human sacrifice of war. Here, Ruth Lawrence discovers how animals also played their part working alongside soldiers and civilians
I
n remembering the colossal human cost of war, the vital role played by animals has been largely overlooked, yet horses, dogs and pigeons provided invaluable assistance alongside other combatants on the battlefield. Horses were heavily relied upon in WWI and casualties were enormous but by the Second World War, their use was limited to the Mediterranean theatre. Over 6,000 horses were present during 1942 along with mules and camels. Among British forces all mounted units other than the Household Cavalry had become motorised, sparing horses the horrific suffering and fate they endured between 1914-1918. In 1941, the War Office invited dog owners to lend their pets to the Army and within a fortnight, 7,000 offers were made by owners keen to help the war effort. Hertfordshire had a War Dogs Training School and many trained dogs were sent overseas on crucial missions. In 1944, a Welsh collie from Kent called Ricky was sent to the Netherlands to sniff out mines, aiding troops that were struggling to locate and clear them from canal towpaths and railway lines. Two weeks before Christmas Ricky was injured during an explosion that killed the section commander. Despite receiving a serious head wound Ricky went straight back to work and sniffed out more mines, saving more lives. Ricky was presented with the Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of the
98 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2020
Victoria Cross, for his actions. Several dogs played a part on D-Day, assisting airborne troops. Parachuted into occupied France under heavy anti-aircraft fire, their ability as sniffer dogs became paramount once on the ground. The phenomenal canine sense of smell was a boon for locating people under bomb flattened buildings. A lady called Margaret Griffin formed a team with her two German Shepherds, Irma and Psyche, during the Blitz on London. The trio successfully helped locate 233 people under the rubble, 21 of whom were still alive. A local avian war hero was Haywards Heath bred ‘Commando,’

a red chequer pigeon used by the British forces in WWII. In his role as a carrier pigeon Commando transported intelligence in 90 missions. He was awarded the Dickin Medal for three notable missions in 1942 when he flew crucial information to Britain from France, including the location of German troops, industrial sites and injured British soldiers. His owner, Sid Moon, was a pigeon fancier who had served with the Army Pigeon Service during WWI and volunteered his birds to the war effort in 1939. When fighting ceased, Commando gained celebrity status and participated in an exhibition of wartime homing pigeons. His efforts were all the more exceptional as fewer than one in eight pigeons returned from their missions, most falling prey to marksmen, falconers, predation, bad weather or sheer exhaustion. Commando’s medal was auctioned by Sid Moon’s grand daughter in 2004 and purchased by a British collector for £9,200. The importance of these animals to our nation during its darkest hours and darkest days shouldn’t be forgotten this Remembrance Day l

COMMUNITY
Wellbeing Enriching the quality of our daily lives, community wellbeing is all about building a vibrant and caring community in which we can all thrive and flourish writes Lisa de Silva
C
ommunity wellbeing is important for giving us a sense of belonging, developing intergenerational links and celebrating what we love most about our neighbourhood. Recognising the strong link between personal and community wellbeing, some local authorities have pioneered Wellbeing Hubs, running workshops to help improve the health and social connectivity of their residents. There are also many groups and projects set up by volunteers to help improve local green spaces, social networks and facilities. Giving of our time and energy to community wellbeing projects is rewarding and can give us
IDEAS FOR WELLBEING PROJECTS Green spaces have a proven positive impact on wellbeing and are good for both personal and public health. Community gardening, allotment projects, planting green walls to minimise pollution, as well as devising and implementing a park safety campaign, can all help to improve the local environment. Projects and activities that bring people together, particularly of different ages are also a vital component of a healthy community. Ideas can include walking groups, choirs, art and craft projects, dance classes, coffee and board game sessions, cookery workshops, affordable and accessible exercise sessions and potluck community lunches, where everyone brings a dish to sample and share. Or a real sense of purpose and achievement. For those interested in joining a project or setting one up, think about what you most value in your local community to help focus your efforts. A visit to your local library is a good place to research what projects and groups are available in the area. Most groups are delighted to welcome the enthusiasm and commitment of new members. CREATING A COMMUNITY WELLBEING GROUP Find something that inspires you or commit to starting up a new group. Chat to friends and neighbours about the things you care about to find like-minded people. Once you have a focus, share your ideas on social media and notice boards to broaden your catchment area and work on building a team who can encourage, support and inspire each other. Once you have defined your focus and objectives, it may even be possible to get a grant from the government, local council or charity to help set up and achieve your aims.
Some local authorities have pioneered Wellbeing Hubs simply start a social club for coffee, chats, talks from experts and local outings. Sharing your expertise or knowledge can also be an enjoyable way to benefit yourself and others. Could you run sessions on money management, health tips, DIY skills, cooking, sewing and knitting crafts? All of these valuable life skills can make a real difference to people’s wellbeing and help to build a stronger local community. l November 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 101
ENTERTAINMENT
Want to keep the kids entertained whatever the weather? Hanna Prince offers some suggestions with these family-friendly indoor activities
Rainy Day Fun B
ad weather doesn’t have to mean tears, tantrums and fights over the remote. Here’s how to beat the rainy-day blues and keep kids of all ages off the couch. BAKE FOR A BETTER WORLD The smell of rising cake wafting from the oven can brighten up even the gloomiest of days – and all that mixing, whisking, shaking and bowl-licking offers hours of entertainment as well. If you’re wondering what to do with the surplus cakes and biscuits, why not try baking for friends and family and asking for a donation to raise funds for your favourite charity? Alternatively, get involved with Free Cakes for Kids (www.freecakesforkids.org.uk), which pairs baking-mad volunteers with families unable to provide a birthday cake for their child. BRILLIANT BOARD GAMES There’s a reason why board games are the go-to option for rainy days with the family. If you’ve
Turn your kitchen into a science laboratory for the day and you’ll barely even notice the bad weather 102 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2020
worked your way through everything in the games cupboard, why not get creative and make your own? Simply choose a style, sketch it out, build the board out of old cardboard packaging and make the pieces from card, wood or modelling clay. If you want to get competitive about it, ask everybody in the family to design a game and vote on which is the most fun to play. BUILD A DEN When the woods are too wet for denbuilding, move the fun inside. Use a large blanket to transform space under a bunkbed or a table into an instant den, then have fun filling it with pillows, toys and other treasured items. Large cardboard boxes make perfect dens, particularly if you decorate
them first with paints or pens. Or why not built a pirate ship den? Up-end a cardboard box, use a long stick and a sheet for a sail, and make a paper pirate flag for decoration. The possibilities are endless… HUNT FOR HIDDEN TREASURE All kids love treasure hunts – particularly if there’s a treat waiting at the end. Give their brains and their legs a workout with a scavenger hunt that leads them around every corner of the house. Either list household items they have to locate to win a prize or create clues that lead to hidden treasure. Not in the mood for dreaming up endless clues? There are template scavenger hunt sheets online that you can print out for instant treasure trail fun. PLAY MAD SCIENTISTS Science experiments are the older kids’ equivalent of messy play. Try mixing liquids such as olive oil, syrup and fooddyed water to watch the layers develop, creating your own bubbles with different shaped homemade wire wands or exploring how salt crystals react with water by making patterns in wet paint. Turn your kitchen into a science laboratory for the day and you’ll barely even notice the bad weather. l

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Winter can be hard on skin, with cold winds and the drying effects of central heating leading to a dull and dehydrated complexion. Yet maintaining a healthy glow is possible with a few small changes to your skincare regime writes Lisa de Silva
Winter Skincare I
n a nutshell, our skin barrier is our primary defence against harsh winter weather and drying environments. So, during these colder months, our main objective is to protect this barrier as it helps to maintain hydration and the moisture necessary for a radiant complexion. To help you achieve this, we’ve outlined some easy adjustments to season-proof your skin. GENTLE CLEANSING Harsh cleansers can strip away your skin’s natural protective barrier, so if your skin feels tight after cleansing, swap to a gentler formulation. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid and hydrating ceramides which can help to repair, protect and hydrate the skin barrier.
Harsh cleansers can strip away your skin’s natural protective barrier INTENSE MOISTURISING Consider changing a lotion moisturiser to a rich cream if your skin is drying out. Again, products with hyaluronic acid and barrier-repairing ceramides will help to retain moisture. This is also the time to add a skin plumping 104 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2020
serum to your regime. Use on cleansed skin before your moisturiser and look for one with added vitamin C, to add brightness and a dewy glow. Facial oils can also help to fight dehydration. Simply apply to cleansed
skin or add a few drops to your day/ night cream. For a weekly treat, invest in an intense moisture mask for some home pampering. And do drink plenty of water, swapping caffeinated drinks for green and herbal teas. EXFOLIATION As dry skin is less able to shed dead cells, regular exfoliation can help this process but it needs to be gentle to prevent any damage to the skin barrier. There are two main types of exfoliator – grainy formulations massaged into the skin or chemical
products containing Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), which not only remove dead cells but also work as resurfacing agents by encouraging new cell generation. Experiment to see which type of exfoliation best suits your skin and always follow with a serum and moisturiser. PREVENTING CHAPPED LIPS & HANDS A lack of oil glands can cause lips to dry and chap, so always protect them with a good lip balm. Hands are also vulnerable during the winter, particularly with the extra hand washing necessitated by coronavirus. Try switching to a moisturising soap and applying a rich hand cream under cotton gloves for several nights. This will help the skin barrier to heal and make a noticeable difference. NOURISHING YOUR BODY Bath oils, body butters and exfoliating body scrubs all come into their own during the winter months, so stock up and enjoy some pampering for silky soft skin. l

IF YOU
ask me...
ANXIOUS? UNHAPPY? GOT SOMETHING ON YOUR MIND? TALK TO A DOG – IT’S CHEAPER THAN THERAPY, WRITES FLO WHITAKER
Dogs are wonderful. They’re unique in the animal world because they’d rather live with us than with their own kind. At some point during the evolutionary process, dogs decided, for better or worse, to throw in their lot with humans. Dogs are fiercely loyal, live for the moment and don’t judge by appearance. They can teach us so much, but we seem to be letting them down. Unfortunately, many owners are rewarding their pets by literally spoiling them to death. Vets are seeing more cases of canine obesity than ever before. At the other end of the scale, animal shelters are full of unwanted dogs, desperate for loving homes. Then there’s those so-called ‘adults’ who dress their dogs in absurd outfits, dye their fur and paint their claws. Enough! A dog is a noble, sentient being that deserves our respect - it’s not a dressing-up dolly or a fashion accessory. I sigh whenever I see a dog walker staring obsessively at their phone, ignoring their pet as it trundles faithfully alongside. Put that phone away! Dogs need to engage and interact with us –they make excellent listeners too. Tell your troubles to a dog and you can be certain of a confidential and sympathetic response. And don’t get me started on choke collars. If I was in charge, I’d make all manufacturers and users of those loathsome devices wear one for a day so they can discover just how it feels to be treated as ‘Man’s Best Friend.’

Peewees reach for the stars
D
espite the challenges of the last six months and the enforced closure of many businesses, Peewees made the decision to embrace the positives. So, during the closure, they took steps to make the salon the best possible experience for both the team and clients to return to. During lockdown, General Manager Tracey and her husband Steve spent five weeks redecorating, updating and improving the salon. The team and clients were delighted to return to a fresher, brighter environment when they reopened on 6th July. With the new Covid-19 regulations, the restart was hard for everyone to adjust to, but by pulling together it’s working really well. We have created a safe working environment and many clients have praised us in their reviews, noting how safe they feel in the salon. 2020 has been strange as normal salon celebrations that mark the individual achievements of the staff had to be cancelled. However long term service awards for Sinead Pendolino (5 years), Donna Hammond (20 years) and Tracey Prescott (25 years) took place and they were presented with gifts, although restrictions meant it wasn’t quite the same. But we’ve continued to feel an amazing level of pride within our team. For the past four years we have been awarded 5 stars for customer service by Salonspy.

Just imagine the explosion of excitement when we received recent news announcing our fifth 5 star Salon of Excellence award for customer service! These awards are given, based on the tracked and verified reviews from real customers – locating us within the top 15% of rated salons. It’s a wonderful achievement. To mark this award we plan to celebrate as well as we can and hope that 2021 allows us all to really celebrate the positives from 2020. Part of the Peewees culture involves supporting local and national charities. We feel this is a positive thing to do and to be involved with. Recently we were approached by a local mum. who asked us to support ‘Turn Burgess Hill Gold’ for a childhood cancer campaign – so we filled half of our salon window with gold balloons throughout September to help raise awareness. In October we promoted Breast Cancer Care alongside product supplier, ghd, who donated £10 for every limited edition pink product we sold. Peewees founder Lee Gold suffered a stroke in May 2019, which has limited the mobility on his left side. Sadly he has had to step away from cutting hair, but remains part of the business. This November we will be supporting the Stroke Association and towards the end of the month Lee will be letting some of the team loose for a fundraising full head shave! Currently, Lee has gone back to his rock and biker years, his flowing locks of hair almost stretching past his shoulders! It will be great to see as many people (as will be allowed) come along and show their support. Discover the time and date via our social media. Lee founded Peewees in 1986 and our culture has always involved having fun – among clients and among the team – alongside some fantastic and creative hair designing. Never more so has this culture needed to shine than right now – Just like our 5 stars! 25a Church Road, Burgess Hill RH15 9BB info@peewees.co.uk

I’m a dog, as you might have noticed, and dogs don’t have watches, but I am still able to tell the time using my own body clock, and that doesn’t hold with all this hour shuffling. As part of my canine duties, I offer an alarm call service for ‘Them Indoors’, which is something instigated by my predecessor, Rolo. The first thing ‘Him Indoors’ used to do when he got up during Rolo’s senior years, was to let him out, into the garden, and then reward his prompt return, when requested, with a biscuit. When I joined the family, whilst I didn’t require the garden, I did need the biscuit, and I started coming downstairs when Rolo was called inside, to join in with the

LEGAL
Seeking Legal Advice It can be a daunting but sometimes necessary task finding legal advice, Peter d’Aguilar offers some practical ways to help you find the right professional
I
n an ideal world, solicitors wouldn’t exist – everything would run smoothly, with harmonious agreement on all sides. Unfortunately, reality isn’t quite like that. Many of life’s most momentous and stressful events require the involvement of a legal professional to help achieve the best possible outcome. A good solicitor can be both a sound investment and an important ally when dealing with issues such as moving home, bereavement, business transactions, divorce, employment disputes or personal injury. For the layperson, the law is often rendered impenetrable by the use of complex jargon. A good lawyer should be able to untangle and interpret this without making the listener feel stupid. But how to select the right lawyer?
There are roughly 10,000 in Britain to choose from, so there’s a need to whittle them down. Here’s a few ideas. Ask around. Personal recommendation is a good starting point, but make sure the law firm in question has the right specialism for your needs. A hotshot conveyancer is not necessarily any good at litigation. Also, it doesn’t necessarily follow that
the biggest firms are the best. With modern technology making it easy to communicate remotely, geographic limitation need not be a restriction when appointing the right person, especially when good communication with a legal adviser is vital. On the other hand, someone on the doorstep might be the perfect solution. Avoid being fobbed off with an articled clerk or an unqualified paralegal, by insisting on an experienced and fully qualified member of staff. It may cost more initially but should pay dividends in the long run. Check online reviews, but also trust your instincts. Do they listen carefully and answer your initial questions clearly, empathetically and professionally? Don’t be afraid to ask about fees, and don’t let a third party foist their choice of solicitor on you. Hold out for the one you want. Visit the Law Society’s free Find a Solicitor database. Alternatively, consult your local Citizens Advice Bureau or the Government’s Community Legal Service. l

CARE
If the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions that followed have taught us anything, it’s the importance of human contact, writes Ken Oxley
KIND HEARTS AND THE BENEFITS S
ocial distancing guidelines reduced human contact and plunged hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people who rely on it into an unfamiliar and frightening world. It’s a challenge we’ve all had to come to terms with, but no group of people has been worse hit than those living with dementia. The statistics make shocking reading. As of mid-October, around 14,000 people with dementia had died from the virus, accounting for over a quarter of all coronavirus deaths in the UK at the time. But that only tells part of the story. A recent survey by Alzheimer’s Society, the UK’s leading dementia charity, revealed the devastating impact coronavirus has had on the mental health and wellbeing of not only those with the condition, but loved ones and carers too. It found almost a third (32%) of those affected by dementia reported apathy or a sense of ‘giving up’. Nearly half of respondents (45%) said lockdown had a ‘negative impact’ on their mental health, and around half of unpaid carers (46%) also reported that loved ones with dementia had experienced stress, anxiety and depression.
Data from Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Connect support line bolsters the disturbing findings, with the impact of coronavirus on mental health being the most prevalent issue, accounting for around 40% of all calls. A follow-up survey by the charity, this time focusing on the extra caring hours being put in by family and friends
You can never underestimate the power of social contact
of people living with dementia, threw up yet another surprising set of statistics. Alzheimer’s Society estimated family and friends spent an extra 92 million hours caring for loved ones with dementia from 23rd March to 29th September across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In the South East, where there are more than 134,000 people living with dementia, that equated to 13.6 million extra hours. The importance of social contact for people living with dementia cannot be overstated – the lack of it is the reason so many have found recent events so distressing. Chris Maddocks, from Eastbourne, who lives with dementia, said: “My mental health and state of mind has taken a hit because of coronavirus and I know I’m not alone. I have been much more depressed and anxious, which is why I reached out to Alzheimer’s Society. You can never underestimate the power of social contact and being around loved ones, particularly for people living with dementia. I hit a down point. It’s like a bereavement because it happened so quickly, and I felt like there were no alternatives.
November 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 115
You’re left without a routine and stuck in limbo. I can’t help but feel hopeless and helpless as I look to the future.” Chris, who is cared for by her partner, is typical of people with dementia across the UK who have found lockdown especially isolating. It is a problem Alzheimer’s Society has tried to address by proactively maintaining contact with those affected by dementia in a variety of ways after it was forced to temporarily suspend faceto-face services. Peer support groups that are regarded as a lifeline for many cannot take place at the moment. Home visits by Dementia Advisers have also, regrettably, been put on hold. However, the charity has responded by hosting some services online – utilising video conferencing technology, for example, to run its popular ‘Singing for the Brain’ sessions. And its Dementia Advisers have made more than 125,000 Welfare Calls to people affected by dementia who use our services to offer information and support, and remind them they are not alone. Furthermore, the charity’s Dementia Connect support line has never been busier. Dementia Advisers help those affected by the condition to navigate their way through myriad complex issues, such as gaining better access
This silent army of husbands, wives, sons and daughters to health, community, housing and care services, as well as providing crucial emotional support so people with dementia can take control of their condition and live the life they choose. It’s estimated there are 700,000 people in the UK who care for someone with dementia, who are mostly unpaid and collectively save the UK economy
£11.6 billion per year. This silent army of husbands, wives, sons and daughters prop up our health and social care system, typically spending 1.3 billion hours a year providing care. Without them, people living with dementia, and society as a whole, would be a great deal worse off. l Anyone affected by dementia can call Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Connect support line on 0333 150 3456. For up to date information, services and practical advice, visit alzheimers.org.uk. This is also where people can access the charity’s online support group Talking Point.

With approximately 1 in 15 people in the UK living with diabetes, Adele Trathan looks at the history of this complicated condition
became possible to avoid inevitable premature death from diabetes. In 1889 at the University of Strasbourg in France, it was discovered that removal of a dog’s pancreas induced diabetes. In the early 1900s, a German scientist injected pancreatic extract into patients suffering from diabetes to help control the disease. By 1916, the Boston Massachusetts based scientist Elliott Joslin had established himself as a world leading expert in diabetes. In his textbook The Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus he observed a fasting diet combined with regular exercise could significantly reduce the risk of death in diabetes patients. Today, some of his principles remain
A Brief History of Diabetes T he condition of, what is now known as, diabetes has been documented for thousands of years. Early diabetic symptoms were recorded as far back as 1552 BC in Egypt. An ancient physician noted frequent urination by some people also caused emaciation. Ancient healers noticed ants were attracted to the urine of people suffering this symptom. Around 150AD Greek physician Aretaeus made progress in the understanding of this condition. His vivid description of diabetes as ‘the melting down of flesh and limbs
The word “mellitus” which means honey was added to the name diabetes which means syphon into urine,’ provided physicians with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the condition. As centuries passed and knowledge increased, ‘water tasters’ sampled the urine of those who were symptomatic. Sweetness indicated diabetes to be present. The word diabetes, which means siphon derives from Greek and Latin. In 1675, another Greek word, ‘mellitus’ which means honey was appended to the name. It wasn’t until the 19th century that chemical tests were scientifically developed to detect the presence of sugar in urine. EARLY TREATMENTS An early treatment for diabetes was horseback riding, as it was supposed to relieve excessive urination. During the 118 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2020
18th and 19th centuries the first instances of dietary changes to help manage the symptoms occurred. Various diets were proposed and included eating only the meat and fat of animals, or alternatively, consuming large amounts of sugar. It was noted by French physician, Appollinaire Bouchardat, during the Franco-Prussian War in the 1870s, that war rationing of foods improved diabetic symptoms, so he prescribed diabetes diets for individual patients. By the early 1900s there were numerous fad diets created for sufferers including ‘potato therapy’ and the ‘oat cure.’ INSULIN Despite the earlier research, it wasn’t until the discovery of insulin that it SOME SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES INCLUDE:

relevant when educating patients about diabetes management. By the early 1920s, Frederick Banting from Ontario, Canada was trialling the treatment of insulin on animals. In 1923, Banting and his colleague, John James Rickard Macleod were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for successfully treating a diabetic patient with insulin. TODAY Diabetes remains a complicated condition to treat, as it exists in many forms. It’s a serious condition whereby the blood glucose level is too high, and the body doesn’t produce enough or any insulin. Anyone suspecting they have this condition should consult their doctor. l
