Editor’s Comment A warm welcome to a very special April issue. I mean, how often do you find not one, but two local nonagenarians who have been honoured for their truly inspirational achievements on a national scale? Dame Vera Lynn needs no introduction. A local girl and international star, she’s been capturing our hearts for many a decade. We caught up with her and daughter Virginia at home in Ditchling and feel very privileged that she made time to see us. Ruth Lawrence couldn’t believe her good fortune, when she was treated to tea and cakes as well as a fascinating interview (pages 8-12). Looking at Ruth’s photos, it’s hard to believe that Dame Vera has just celebrated her 96th birthday! May we take this opportunity to send our very best birthday wishes and many happy returns, from all of us here at Sussex Living. David Saunders is a remarkable man. A founding father of the Burgess Hill District Lions, he has dedicated most of his life to charity work, something which has earned him an MBE along with the admiration of many. Steve Ramsey went to see him (page 57). If springtime is here, then a visit to Lingfield Nature Reserves is a must. Walk amongst the 12,000 or so trees, admire the natural habitat of many insects and birds, or just enjoy the peace and tranquillity. It’s all volunteer maintained, and you can do your bit too – see pages 35-38 to find out more. Closer to home, spring is great time to take a closer look at all those jobs that need doing round the home and garden. This month’s Home & Garden feature (pages 16-27) is packed with ideas to help you get your home shipshape for spring. Education is not just for the young. The University of the 3rd Age is a locally organised co-operative, providing learning opportunities to the older generation on a wealth of subjects – and can you believe there are no entrance qualifications and no exams? A shared love of learning is all you need, as Roger Linn found out when he visited the recently formed Hassocks, Hurstpierpoint and Ditchling branch (pages 59-61). Preparations for the Sussex Living Marathon (4-6 May) are now in full swing, so if you’re thinking of getting involved, either as a runner, sponsor or supporter, don’t delay! Dame Vera at home in Mid i must have been about five when i first heard my father quietly hum “We’ll Meet Again” and now, over four decades later, i was about to meet the lady whose songs had accompanied those childhood memories.

Any trepidation I’d felt knocking on the door of Dame Vera Lynn’s home in Ditchling evaporated within seconds as I was handed tea and biscuits in reassuring, rose-painted 1950s china by her daughter Virginia. Now in her mid-nineties, Dame Vera could easily be mistaken for a lady in her late sixties. And I was thrilled to discover that she still possesses that indefinable quality that put her on the stage at the age of seven, back in the 1920s. Performing was always in her blood. Vera was first taken to a club by her parents at only 10 weeks old. She remembers pretending her granny’s garden was a stage – she would make her entrance and perform to an audience of gladioli with her friend Maudie. Soon, she was working to real applause and real money: 7 shillings and sixpence for singing three songs and an extra shilling and sixpence for an encore. Her sense of responsibility for others must have blossomed young, since all her earnings went to her family and she only got to keep a penny a week for pocket money, just enough for a chocolate bar. Vera’s long love affair with rural life began on the Surrey/Hampshire borders during long summer holidays spent at her Aunt Maggie’s house in the small village of Weybourne. The happy times nurtured there sustained her during arduous days. In 1944, during the draining, sticky heat of Burma, it was the memory of the cool tasting water from a well near Weybourne that reinforced her love for that particular corner of English countryside. Although she would continue to work in London,

Vera and her husband bought Clayton Holt, a large house at the foot of the South Downs , and it was here that her connection to Mid Sussex was born.

Vera and her husband Harry bought a large house in the village of Clayton, at the foot of the South Downs, with nearly 200 acres of land, before the end of the war. Clayton Holt was conveniently placed for swift trains to the capital and it was here that her connection to Mid Sussex was born. Although still in London for her TV and radio work, her performances in the USA, Australia and New Zealand meant that proximity to an airport became more important so she and Harry were able to spend more time down here. Their connection to Ditchling began with the purchase of Three Beams Cottage, a converted stable opposite the duck pond, and it was during a walk through the village that Vera came across a large apple orchard in North End. In 1972, the house next door came up for sale and they moved in. continued on next page

My visit coincided with some major works to the upstairs bedrooms. While furniture was being moved, I was curious to notice a heavy travelling trunk. Vera explained that it had accompanied her across the Atlantic on the QE1 after the war. Old labels, printed with evocative illustrations of glamorous ocean liners, covered the sides and I felt a tangible sense of how important the rural peace of Sussex must have been for Vera during her hectic life. She has always felt a strong emotional connection to her chosen home with its view of the Downs and the old droveway that ran behind the garden. Ancient history is a topic that has always interested Vera; she admitted that if she hadn’t taken to the stage, she might well have become

an archaeologist! I suspect her natural connection with people would have inevitably led her to the path she eventually trod, especially when she repeatedly spoke of being in the right place at the right time, one road leading seamlessly to another. Vera’s memories of a Ditchling of old are still vivid. She recalls collecting milk in a metal can from the farm buildings that now house the Turner Dumbrell craft workshops. She used to visit the Sandrock Pub for a Sunday roast, where they served vast Yorkshire puddings that became known as ‘the Vera Lynns’ and she remembers dining at Wild Goose Cottage, home of designerinventor Rowland Emett and his wife. I wondered if Vera, like many of her generation, might yearn for the simplicity of earlier times, but she lives emphatically in the here and now. She spoke of how progress brings new benefits and although she obviously cherishes the memories of her remarkable life, she refuses to be hampered by nostalgia. continued on next page

Harry passed away in 1998 after 57 years of their wonderful marriage. Now, Virginia and her husband live next door. Mother and daughter are exceptionally close and Virginia’s resemblance to Vera’s younger self is striking. Vera always felt happy that her daughter grew up in the Sussex countryside, with the same warm, nurturing memories she’d enjoyed during her breaks from London as a child. Vera showed me a personal book crammed with letters and photographs from troops and relatives of ‘her boys’ who she sang to and visited during her tours to Burma during the war. It was emotional to see the profound effect she had obviously had on morale during those difficult years. Vera has continued to visit wounded exservicemen in recovery units and nursing homes throughout her life. She talked to pilots with extensive burns at Sir Archibald McIndoe’s Research Unit in East Grinstead and, in 2009 opened a new burns research laboratory at the Queen Victoria Hospital in the town.

Having supported cerebral palsy charities since the 1950s, Vera eventually founded her own charity 12 years ago, The Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy, here in West Sussex (www.dvltrust.org.uk). At Ingfield Manor in Five Oaks, The Dame Vera Lynn School for Parents provides a specialised service for families of babies and children up to the age of five with cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties. The charity receives no government funding and has to raise £660,000 per year to meet running costs. A charity shop has recently opened in Southwater and volunteers are always needed for this and other fulfilling roles within the Trust. As my visit came to an end, I noticed numerous photos stretching back decades, now vying for space on Vera’s grand piano. Despite her success, accolades and appointment as Dame Commander of the British Empire, Vera Lynn was first and foremost a loving wife, then mother, supporter and inspiration to millions. It was her love of home and family that provided the bedrock that enabled her to touch the collective heart of this country. www.sussexliving.com

Current trends still favour neutrals accented with bright pops of colour other. The business was started way back in 1946, when Stephen’s grandfather ran the premises as a wood yard and market garden. Logs and kindling are still a year-round part of the business; customers can fill their vehicle up with seasoned logs or purchase a more manageable wheelbarrow load for a very reasonable £6.25. But the main reason why regular customers come here from as far afield as Edinburgh and Yorkshire is to take advantage of monumental savings on reconstituted stone garden statues. The ornaments and statues are half the retail price; they’re all seconds. Stephen (pictured right) explains that many people prefer the slight imperfections, as they blend nicely into the natural environment. The blemish is often no more than a tiny chip or crack and I, for one, found it hard to detect anything obvious as I walked amongst the statues, placed elegantly among the trees. A tall and slender Aphrodite, perfect to stand beside a pond or arching foliage, was on sale for just £250 instead of the £450+ demanded by garden centres. The most sought after statue is a Serene Buddha, calmly poised for only £135 instead of nearly £300 elsewhere. Customers instantly feel at home here; there are no fancy displays or glossy signage, and Stephen readily admits that “Dad is not a salesman. We’re a friendly, family-run business and we always offer advice to anyone who needs it.” There’s certainly no shortage of product choice. “We never know what we might get in next,” Stephen smiles, pointing out an unusual black Buddha statue which would look magnificent next to tall green bamboo or

NGS Open Garden:

Offham House An abundance of local horticultural history and many visual treats make Offham House gardens a must-see for ngS fans.

Snow from an unseasonable cold snap still lined the drive to Offham House, home to Miranda and Pontus Carminger, but even these lingering drifts did little to detract from the sweeping views from their nine-acre garden. Built in the Queen Anne style, the original house dates from 1676, with a flint façade added a century later. The gardens stretch back across a long slope that leads the eye to the open countryside beyond. Before the war, the Courage brewery family owned the house. It has been in Miranda’s family since 1975. Previous owners planted an arboretum of interesting specimen trees including Miranda’s favourite Paulownia. Rows of espaliered apple trees, believed to be 200 years old, stand like gnarled fairytale illustrations, as if waiting to reach out with their twisted branches. Half-century old ornamental cherry trees hold the promise of spring in their long-awaited blossom and a 350-year-old listed yew tree stands sentinel above a long, sloping herbaceous border. A tulip tree is expected to flower this year, an event that only occurs every 20 years; if it obliges, it promises to be a beautiful display. When the grounds open for two NGS Open Garden Days in April and June, visitors will be able to buy some unusual specimen plants and baby hardy perennials split from plants in the herbaceous border. Hanging baskets, pelargonium, fuchsias and freesias will also be on sale, along with homemade cakes and teas. Visitors can walk around the successful veg garden that keeps the family self-sufficient for much of the year, beetroot, broccoli, chard, spinach and

leek grow among staple crops like potatoes, beans, peas and sprouts. As well as three guinea fowl and a plethora of chickens, two pet pigs, Dolly and Angie, lend a trotter, acting as living composters by recycling all food scraps from the house. While I was chatting to Jo, the gardener, about the exuberant songbird population including Goldcrest, Redwing and Fieldfare, we heard the unmistakeable mew of a Buzzard. Not one, but three circled overhead and Jo commented how three species of owl also visit the garden, including the small and aptly named Little Owl. Moving on past the old glasshouses, where peach and nectarines are grown, I noticed that one wall in the Victorian walled garden had a distinctive snake-like wiggle. “It’s called a crinkle crankle wall,” Miranda explained before telling me how previous generations would have heated this south-facing wall with water pipes, so that fruit trees would flourish. your garden isn’t bigger than Sissinghurst , it just seems like it

In April, folk who are usually calm and sensible rush about scattering thousands of seeds in mad abandon. Why is it that a red mist descends, with siren voices telling us that our humble-sized plots are, in fact, bigger than Sissinghurst? The two things you need to remember about seeds are that they are either insanely expensive or ridiculously cheap. A super-new hybrid may set you back a fiver for a packet of ten seeds, whereas 500 seeds of an old variety can be bought for 50 pence. The expensive variety is usually difficult to grow. Most seedlings will perish and you’ll be left with three or four yellowing specimens that a passing slug will treat as a mouthwatering hors d’oeuvre. This has the psychological effect of making you want to ‘get your money back’ on the cheap old faithfuls and you sow entire packets of pansies, cosmos, runner beans and radishes. Before you know it, windowsills are crammed full with forests of seedlings, all in dire need of pricking out, and there’s enough lettuce to make a salad for every rabbit in Sussex. Harden your heart to this madness and sow in smaller amounts. Remember, your garden isn’t bigger than Sissinghurst, it just seems like it. Instead of using a seed tray, fill a 3-inch pot with soil and carefully scatter a modest ‘pinch’ of seed. This method will give you enough plants for your needs. Likewise, with vegetables, sow a ‘short’ row, wait a fortnight and then sow the other half of the row, thereby ensuring a welcome succession of crops. A glut of vegetables is seldom worth boasting about. And beetroot for breakfast soon loses its appeal – trust me…

Last week I took my courage in both hands and boldly opened the door of my garden shed. This is always a thrilling moment because it marks the real beginning of spring and because the door hasn’t been opened since I closed it last November. Since the interior of my shed seems to support a variety of plant, animal and insect life in a complete ecosystem of its own, I’m always anxious to see what changes have taken place over the winter. I live in the hope that in some of the darker corners there may even be life forms developing that are as yet unknown to science. I was pleased to be greeted by my twin concrete mini-statues standing guard just inside the door. In fact, they weren’t purchased as statues but small bags of ready-mix concrete of some sort. Alas, I neglected to seal either of them properly, and as the shed is not entirely damp proof, they became little statues wrapped in their own handy carrier bags. I’ve become quite fond of them. The shelves at the back of the shed still groaned under the weight of the 47 or so paint tins, which my wife has collected over the many years since we moved into this house. I believe some of them may even contain paint, though I shouldn’t care to open one to find out. They form a pleasing mural with the serried ranks of fertilisers, both granular and liquid, insecticides, turpentine, linseed oil (from when I used to have a cricket bat), white spirit, Jeyes fluid and barbecue fire starter fuel. Much of the grass seed box had been eaten by the field mice who take up residence every winter. They hadn’t eaten all the seed, however, and the first growth of a new lawn seemed to be developing on the floor underneath the shelf, where the ivy had forced its way in last autumn. The mice, who will eat anything which isn’t actually made of metal, have been pretty voracious this year. They’ve eaten the thumbs off Lizzie’s gardening gloves, and the grandchildren’s plastic paddling pond is now beyond the help of Elastoplast. As I gazed at the rest of the contents, including the lawnmower, mini tent, garden seat cushions, tools and grandchildren’s toys, I realised, as I do every year at this time, that I need a bigger shed.

Lingﬁeld’s treasures Discover Lingfield nature Reserves

where the local community comes together to look after nature’s

I passed a towering hollow oak by the village pond on my way to meet Lingfield Nature Reserves’ volunteers, little realising the ancient tree’s part in their colourful history. Publicity Officer Julie Hearn greeted me with a welcome flask of coffee, while Anne Richards introduced me to several volunteers already busy clearing and cutting, seemingly impervious to the bitter February wind. The Reserves are a triumph of local cohesion. Having secured the land from development by invoking the Allotment Act and following a two-year battle, two Nature Reserves have been created over the last 18 years. 12,000 trees have been planted, including a ring of English oaks, grown from acorns belonging to the 400-year-old oak by the village pond. “The first volunteers were goats called Bronwen and Salome,” laughed Anne. They helped clear scrub

from the 25-acre site, making room for the Herculean task of tree planting and hedge laying to ensure the Reserves will remain a bountiful wildlife haven. Lingfield Nature Reserves have the wellbeing of insects and birds at heart. The Butterfly Garden has a centre bed for nectar and a sheltering outer bed, incorporating a deep mixed hedge of 248 plants. Disabled access paths lead past an aromatic herb corner, and seating enables people to enjoy the sight of feasting butterflies. Last year, a rare Brown Hairstreak was spotted in the aptly named Quiet Garden, and Orange Tips and Common Blues are regular visitors. I heard the unmistakeable drum of a Greater Spotted Woodpecker, and Anne told me that most of the Reserves’ 23 bird boxes were in use. A nightingale was spotted in a corner of the orchard last year. This rare, melodious bird has an almost orchestral range of song. Also, earlier this year, the Reserves played host to a flock of rare and exotic waxwings (as pictured below). These beautiful birds are winter visitors to the UK from the harsher Scandinavian climate, and they never normally come further south than Scotland! To have two such special visitors must have felt like a true blessing. Anne pointed out a grand Wellingtonia tree. A Californian native with spongy fireproof bark, it was planted along with many others across the country in memory of the Duke of Wellington, and is around 150 years old. It forms part of the Tree Trail, a collection of 25 trees that take the visitor round the entire Wildlife Area and includes the Wild Service tree, whose fruits were once sold as a natural sweet in the Weald of Kent. Fruits from Quince and Medlar trees are used to make jellies and the Walnut, introduced by the Romans, holds the edible seed within a hard shell surrounded by a soft green fruit. Many trees have been planted specifically for birds – Hawthorn, Scots Pine, Ash, Oak, Bird Cherry and Wild Privet are important food sources for many species. A Community Orchard was planted from a neglected paddock, now home to 72 tree varieties including the assumed-to-be extinct Lingfield Forge Apple. A twig from a toppled specimen was grafted, and now a tree stands tall among Damsons, Plums, Crab Apples and Pears. Nut Corner is home to seed-grown Hazels, Walnuts, Kent Cob and an American Black Walnut which may one day reach a height of 40 metres.

The hedging is a particularly striking feature of the Reserves – two fine, inherited hedges made of native species complement the new 200-metre Bloomer’s Hedge which includes Blackthorn, Dog Rose, Hawthorn and Oak. Anne pointed out how trees are allowed to grow tall at intervals within the hedge to allow birds to perch, while gorse bays have been planted for Linnets to nest in. The hedge has been laid in the ‘South of England’ style which will eventually grow to 2m wide by 3m tall, forming an invaluable wildlife corridor for insects. Over 500 mixed native trees have been planted in a coppice including an open, sunny ‘ride’, a cleared corridor that faces east-west to encourage and shelter butterflies. Two ponds were dug from scratch – a bridge and viewing platforms overlook the water where the largest local population of Great Crested Newts have made their home. In summer, the platforms make a wonderful place to relax; visitors can even snack on the nearby fruiting hedge which includes Wild Pear, Plum and Crab Apple. An understorey of Gooseberry, Raspberry, Quince and Medlar is being planted beneath to encourage an unpruned, wild bounty for birds and humans. All work at Lingfield Nature Reserves has been carried out by local volunteers and the needs of the community have played a central role in the overall design. An amenity field has been kept open for community picnics while an enfolding circle of trees was planted to provide shade and shelter. A field shelter was built as a gathering point, and interpretation boards, seating, steps, kissing gates and a network of hardstanding paths make the Reserves feel incredibly welcoming and easy to negotiate. wheelchair access possible and interpretation boards explain the features of the Butterfly Garden and ponds. Regular events include pond days, mini beast hunts and youth activities, and volunteers are always sought for maintenance, planting, pruning and clearing – just check the website. The fact that so many turned up on the bitter cold Sunday of my visit proves how rewarding the work can be. The Reserves seem to be as complete an ecosystem as possible, catering for all species in the food chain. From the smallest insect to the wandering mammal, every visitor, whether winged, two-legged or rooted in earth seems to occupy its particular, specialised niche. This attention to biodiversity is taking effect: a thriving population of grass snakes and the sighting of a common lizard are recent rewards, and common frogs have completed their first breeding cycle with the emergence of froglets. Three new species of damselflies have been recorded and grasshoppers have been laying eggs on patches of sunny ground. Success stories like this are an inspiration of what can be achieved at local level with voluntary donations, perseverance, grants and hands-on volunteer support. Not only will countless numbers of wild creatures benefit from this far-reaching vision, but an entire community now has a wild, managed space they can delight in and share far into the future. The new lawn bowling season is fast approaching and all clubs in our area will be hoping for much better playing conditions than those experienced in 2012 when many ﬁxtures were lost to the weather. However, a new season brings fresh opportunities and, to this end, Colemans Hatch Bowling Club is holding two Open Days on 4th and 18th May with a view to encouraging new players into

this active but relaxing sport. These open days will provide an opportunity to visit the club at its picturesque location in the Ashdown Forest and enjoy an afternoon of lawn bowls. 8.30. As our curtain up is a little earlier we’ve decided to call the evening ‘Tonight at 7.30 – A Brief Encounter with Noël Coward’. The first play is called ‘Fumed Oak’, a very amusing story about a downtrodden man called Henry Gow and his somewhat overbearing family. A better title for this could be ‘The Worm that Turned’. The second play is called ‘Still Life’. It is about a couple who meet by chance in a station refreshment room one evening and charts their romance over the course of a year. Sound familiar? Quite possibly, because 10 years later the play was turned into the much loved film, Brief Encounter. In addition to the two plays, we will be serving a two-course supper, 1930s style. A group of local disabled artists, some of whom paint by mouth, is in urgent need of funds. If you’re thinking about running some or all of the Sussex Living Marathon (which will take place in Mid Sussex over the May Bank Holiday Weekend), and would like to raise some sponsorship for this worthy group, they would love to hear from you. The Sussex Community Day Centre is a registered charity and meets each week for a day of painting and socialising. Most of the group members are Burgess Hill residents. 1st Hurstpierpoint Scouts The 1st Hurstpierpoint Scouts HQ, in Brown Twins Road, was opened in 1994 following many years of hard work and dedicated fundraising by loyal supporters, particularly Harry and Stan Brown, the twins after whom the road is named. Since then, many hundreds of boys and girls have beneﬁted from these ﬁne facilities and the enthusiastic support of the Scout Leaders. Currently, there are about 150 young boys and girls involved in the Group and there’s a long waiting list to join. A team of 34 leaders and helpers give up their time entirely voluntarily and

the Scout HQ is used for Scout activities four evenings a week, with other community activities taking place at other times. In order to oﬀer even more rewarding opportunities to local youngsters, the Group has decided to extend the building, to incorporate a large activity room, an 8.5 metre traversing climbing wall, and additional storage. Planning consent has been obtained and about half of the funding has been raised. However, about £60,000 is still required to complete the project. The Group is actively looking for donors to support the project. “We would be extremely grateful for any level of support and would welcome the opportunity to meet with potential donors to discuss our plans in greater detail,” a spokesman said. The next planned fundraising event is a Horse Racing Evening at the Scout HQ on Saturday 20 April, 7pm. You can sponsor

Gilbert & Sullivan came to Hurstpierpoint Review by John Samson. There can surely be no better way to spend a cold, sleety evening than by attending a production by The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Sussex, in the warm, intimate Players’ Theatre in Hurstpierpoint. Undoubtedly, a special treat for Mothers’ Day! Opening with the rarely performed curtain-raiser ‘Cox and Box’, the company followed this with a varied selection of songs and duets from the celebrated comic-operas of Gilbert & Sullivan. The lively and enthusiastic ensemble was most ably shaped and directed by Susan Fleet, with musical direction in the safe hands of Christine Colbourne; and the evening was compered in a most engaging and assured

manner by Laurence Leng who shed his MC mantle from time-to-time and joined the melodious throng. Sadly, reasons of space prevent my naming all those I should wish to, but a few demand a salutation. William Colbourne, as the hatter Mr. Cox in ‘Cox & Box’, took possession of the stage like a sprightly, dapper antelope - and, with his keen awareness of the comic-opera genre, born of long experience, gave a most charming and amusing performance. Katharine Collett, a delicate and sensitive soprano, with the voice of a nightingale, seems to grow in stature on every hearing. Richard Nixon delivered the Mikado’s famous solo with impressive style and relish, only occasionally allowing the character’s psychopathic tendencies to explode in shrieks of sadistic laughter. Excellent! It was so good to hear again the silver voice of Marion Smith.

Haywards Heath Bike Ride is a date to put in your diary.

On your bike On 21 April, hundreds of keen cyclists will congregate in the centre of Haywards Heath for the town’s very own take on the Tour de France. The Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride is celebrating its third anniversary this year, and it’s set to be bigger and better than ever. The official line is that the bike ride was established by the Haywards Heath and District Business Association (HHDBA) with the aim of bringing the local community together and promoting the town as a commercial destination. But, as I learned when I met up with event organiser Ruth de Mierre, the reality was far more informal. “We were having a few drinks in the pub one night about four years ago,” she says, “and we all agreed that we wanted to do something that would put Haywards Heath on the map. Somebody suggested seeing if the London to Brighton Bike Ride would divert through the town, but that wasn’t possible.” A new event was born, and with great, almost immediate, success. Around 600 people took part in the first year, rising to 1,000 in 2012. This year, major local players like 1st Central Insurance Management, Nuffield Health and The Orchards Shopping Centre are sponsoring the ride, and Ruth expects that participant numbers will increase to 1,500 cyclists. So, who is the event aimed at? Could somebody like me – a local and casual cyclist, but certainly no

Bradley Wiggins, take part? “Oh, absolutely,” says Dan Thompson of sponsors 1st Central. “First and foremost, we set this up as a family event. As long as you’re old enough to ride a bike, you can join in. That’s why there are four routes of varying difficulty.” Beginners and families can tackle the Sergison Green Route, a gently rolling ride around Haywards Heath and Cuckfield. The next step up is the 21.5-mile Cavalier Blue Route, followed by the 41.6-mile Highwayman Red Route. Finally, the appropriately named Wiggins Way Black Route is 72.8 devilishly difficult miles of sharp ascents and descents that will challenge even professional cyclists. Unlike many similar events, you can take part without raising a minimum amount for your chosen charity – although the ride certainly has a charitable element. This year, all entry fees will go towards installing defibrillators around the town. Dan says, “the aim is to create a lasting legacy that will benefit the whole community.” The Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride is a communitywide celebration that everybody from the area can enjoy. With performances from the town band, Vivace Singers, visiting teams from Haywards Heath’s French and German twin towns, and an appearance by UK champion discus thrower Jade Nicholls, it’s set to be a highlight of the Mid Sussex spring calendar. Counting down to May… With just 5 weeks left until the start of the 2013 Sussex Living Marathon, race spaces are filling up fast! The races start on Saturday 4th May in East Grinstead with the same scenic 10-mile route as last year, starting at the Sports Club.

I’m still training for the Sussex Living Marathon. Sort of. Basically, I go running sometimes. I started months ago with a clear, simple exercise plan, but have routinely ignored it. A few weeks ago, I was meant to run five miles. I did it in 35 minutes; for me, a great five-mile time. Unfortunately, when I got home and measured the run, it was just over four miles. I’ve now completely stopped measuring distances and times, so am almost certainly not running for as long or as far as my plan tells me to. As a wise person once tweeted: “I have overthrown my exercise regime”. How to get back on track? As a student, I had no problems with motivation (at least for exercising), thanks to our favourite game: Man versus Bus. Bath Uni was on top of a big hill; the town centre was at the bottom. When I’d been in town with friends, I’d leave them waiting at the bus stop and try and make it back before them. As I didn’t walk around town in running gear, this challenge always involved me jogging in smart-casual clothes, carrying my tweed jacket over one arm. Because the buses took a while to arrive, it was a reasonably fair contest, and never dull. But, with no buses to race, boredom has been an issue recently. Some people might go running with friends, or promise themselves cheesecake on getting home. I decided to race David Bowie. Not the actual David Bowie, who’s in his late 60s and has better things to do. Instead, I put his classic ‘Station to Station’ album on in my home stereo, hit play, and rushed out the door, hoping to finish my usual route and get back before it finished. This gave me a reason, albeit a pathetic one, to run faster. And it worked: I kept up a noticeably quicker pace, getting home with a few minutes of the album left. Next time, I’ll run the same route against a slightly shorter Bowie album. Of course, if the real David Bowie does want a race, he can always write to me at Sussex Living, and I’m sure we can sort something out.

On Sunday 5th May, the 10-mile race moves to Haywards Heath and starts on South Road, taking in some beautiful woodland before finishing in Victoria Park. The Burgess Hill race on Monday 6th May starts and finishes in the heart of the town in Church Walk, whilst also taking in some spectacular views of the South Downs en route. As a community magazine, Sussex Living has always valued the importance of events that bring a community together, so when the opportunity arose to get involved with a Marathon uniting Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and East Grinstead – the three main towns in Mid Sussex (and our distribution area), how could we say no? Sussex Living magazine were first asked to be Gold Sponsors back in November 2011, and so started a dedication and commitment to being part of an event that would hopefully be the first of many. Tanis Banham and Carla Faulks – joint owners of Sussex Living – saw this event as a way of bringing together businesses, local councils, community groups, charities and individual members of the community to really put Mid Sussex on the map, as well as encouraging visitors – runners and spectators alike – to spread the word on what Mid Sussex has to offer. From day one, Sussex Living started to build valuable relationships within the community to help promote the Marathon Weekend in 2012, securing the foundations which have gone on to support what’s destined to be an even bigger and better event for 2013. In order to achieve maximum success for this event, Sussex Living have ongoing multi-media platforms to promote the Sussex Living Marathon. Each month, the magazine has covered and will continue to cover the marathon event in interesting

and informative ways to encourage more people to get involved – be they runners, marshals, spectators or sponsors. We have written inspiring stories on individuals, featured their supportive sponsors and designated space each month for updates. Alongside this, Sussex Living have a Twitter account (@livingmarathon) and Facebook page to keep our marathon followers’ fingers on the ‘Sussex Living Marathon pulse’, so to speak – which even includes tweeting at the events themselves! Last May, there were hundreds of supporters and runners who braved the wet and muddy conditions to show how proud they were to do their bit for Mid Sussex. Meridian Radio and Bright FM kept everyone’s spirits up with fabulous music and entertainment and at each event location, business set up pop-up stalls, offering raffles, food and well earned massages for the runners at the end of the race. Marathon Race Day Tips from Freedom Leisure “We’re delighted to be an official sponsor of the Sussex Living Marathon,” says Holly Sutcliffe, Sport Development Officer for Freedom Leisure. “Our fitness team has put together their top race day tips to help you ensure everything goes smoothly. Best of luck to all those taking part.” Get in a relaxed state and do some deep breathing about 15-20 minutes before the start. Lie on your back and breathe in and out very slowly. Visualize yourself running well and being totally fluid in your movement. Don’t wear any new kit on race day. You don’t want to risk it being uncomfortable or causing a blister and affecting your enjoyment of the event. If this is your first race, don’t put pressure on yourself to achieve a fast

time. Finishing the race and enjoying the experience are excellent goals for a first-timer. The race is not won in the first mile, however it can be lost. Stay relaxed during the first mile, even if something unexpected happens. There is plenty of opportunity to make up time during the rest of the race. Try and keep your running style fluid throughout. If you are tense you’ll run less efficiently. Pay attention to common tension sites (hands, jaw, forehead). Do a quick head-to-toe scan every 10 minutes, consciously trying to relax any tense areas, and stop to stretch if you need to. Tuck in a couple of metres behind runners of a similar pace to save energy. This technique (‘drafting’) can result in a

heart rate of up to 10 beats/min. lower than the runner you are following. If you’re struggling to maintain your race pace, pick out someone not too far ahead of you and try to catch up! Alternatively, grab the same old garb and get dressed with a cursory ‘sod it, that’ll do’ look in the mirror before heading out of the door to face another day feeling lacklustre and a bit blah. Most women I know will, if pressed, sheepishly admit to only wearing a fraction of the clothes they own. But there’s no point crying over (badly) spent money or suffering daily from past mistakes. Better to ditch the guilt, tackle that wardrobe and take a reality check. Ask yourself: What do my clothes say about me? Do they still fit and flatter, are they seasonal and up to date? Am I dressing in colours that suit me (beware: black is hardly ever the answer!) and do

I have the right things to wear for my lifestyle? What about those wardrobe mistakes or impulse buys that have never seen the light of day? If the current cost per wear of an item equals its original purchase price, it means you’ve only worn it once – and that’s not what I’d call value for money. Unlike our American sisters’ reputedly cavernous ‘closets’, space in the average British wardrobe is always at a premium, which is why a regular wardrobe edit is a great way to take stock, prioritise and keep current. You can make this task as easy or difficult as you like, and there’s no shortage of advice in the fashion press to help you along (or how about a swishing party?), but it basically boils down to this: Review each item of clothing, footwear and accessories and sort the contents of your wardrobe into various action piles. Personally, I find it quite liberating to get rid of items that no longer serve me. It’s empowering to ebay, gratifying to give to charity and, of course, a pleasure to replenish. You will be left with fewer clothes, but they’ll be things you really love and want to wear, with space for new and wellconsidered additions that make you feel and look great. The recent wintery weather may make us wish for summer, but with the appearance of the sun, most of us reach for the sun cream to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of the sun. But why do many of us only think of our skin when the sun comes out?

ost of us have the potential for healthy, vital skin. It is programmed into our DNA. But skin genetics are also heavily influenced by the environment. Sun, pollution and natural ageing play a part in damaging the skin’s genetic code, resulting in DNA replication errors that can lead to premature wrinkles, dryness and blotchy brown ‘age spots’. A good skincare regime can help create a positive ‘microclimate’ for your skin, protecting it from DNA damage and assisting in repairing skin cells. The difficulty lies in finding products and routines that actually work. This is where your plastic surgeon can help. Increasingly, savvy skincare consumers are turning to their doctor for advice on skincare and products. Mr Paul Banwell, a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at The Nuffield Health Haywards Health Hospital, has been an early adopter of medical-grade skincare products for his patients. “Skin is our presentation to the world and the first indicator of ageing. If you keep your skin in top condition, you look younger and fresher,” he says. “Good skincare is the logical first step in any antiageing regime. It isn’t difficult or complicated, but you need to use the right active ingredients at the correct concentrations.” Most doctors agree that the fundamentals of modern skincare involve protecting the skin during the day and repairing any damage at night. Underlying these principles is the awareness that your skin has its own immune system that needs to function optimally for skin to look healthy and glowing. The skin’s immune cells (the ‘Langerhans Cells’) can be overwhelmed by too much sun, leading to premature ageing and possibly skin cancer. Daily use of sunscreens is important, but medical experts are beginning to understand that this step alone may not be enough. In addition to a daily moisturiser containing sunscreen, most plastic surgeons and cosmetic doctors are now recommending the use of topical vitamins B3 (niacinamide) and vitamin C (serum). Paul Banwell agrees. “Topical niacinamide has been shown to protect the skin’s immune cells, which may help prevent premature

ageing and certain types of skin cancer. I recommend it to all my patients. I also prescribe topical vitamin C serum to be used every morning in conjunction with a sunscreen, as it helps prevent skin damage caused by free radicals.” At night, the ideal routine appears to be cleansing the skin with a gentle cleanser, followed by a vitamin A preparation to help repair damaged DNA. A mild exfoliant containing alpha and beta hydroxy acids is also helpful for removing dry, damaged skin cells. So which skincare products are best? “All medical skincare products are good, but some are put together more cleverly than others,” says Mr Banwell. “For my patients, I recommend a range from Australia called Rationale. Their understanding of sun damage is very advanced, and despite the harsh climate, I observed that women in Australia using these products looked considerably younger than their counterparts here in the UK.” It is not uncommon for patients to have concerns about rashes or blemishes on their skin, and we would recommend an initial discussion with your GP. 95-year-old David Saunders MBE can look back on a lifetime with the Burgess Hill District Lions, which he co-founded decades ago.

The longest serving Lion “It’s not about what I enjoy about Lions,” says David, gently correcting my question. “It’s what Lions do for the community. If they weren’t assisting the community, it would be a waste of time. Helping others is more important than just enjoying themselves.” David, the longest-serving Lion in Britain, founded the Burgess Hill club in 1955. “My neighbour was a member of the Brighton Lions Club. He took me down to Brighton, and I was initiated into what it was all about. Later, I thought ‘why bother coming down to Brighton when you can have a club at Burgess Hill?’ So I set one up.” David and a friend wrote to 30 locals, inviting them to a meeting that February. Only six made it, but there was enough interest to officially form the club a few weeks later. David moved to Burgess Hill, he says, on Christmas Day 1940. A local family used to invite strangers in every year for Christmas dinner. David, one of the strangers invited in 1940, ended up marrying the family’s daughter, and has lived here ever since. During World War II, “I was in the forces, the medical corps’ hygiene section. My job was not to make ill people better, but to create an environment to prevent people getting ill in the first place. So nobody noticed the job we were doing,” he says, chuckling. After the war, he became a Public Health Inspector and in 1967 took a full-time Lions job, as their International Representative, which involved helping people set up new Lions clubs. “When I became the International Representative, they had about 100 clubs, and when I left them they had 800,” David says. But his greatest success was probably helping bring the

Medic Alert ID system to the UK in 1964. “The amount of work involved in that was just phenomenal,” says his daughter Jill. “I remember Dad tearing his hair out, particularly over the prototype of the bracelets. “All the GPs in Britain and Ireland were mailed, the whole lot [26,000 doctors].” The Lions always kept David busy, his son Chris says. “Most weekends he’d be away doing things, collecting boxes, food and cans for distribution, stuff like that. He’d be out for hours on end. Once he was employed by the Lions, he did a huge amount of travelling, hundreds of thousands of miles. I think they wore out a car every year.”

Along with many awards for Lions work, David received an MBE in 2007 for services to charity. “Honours are more important to my family than to me,” he says humbly. “Obviously, I am grateful for the recognition, but I don’t do it for the sake of having an award.” David is still involved with the Lions. “He’s as active as he can be from his chair,” says Lions Secretary Tony Parris. “Basically, David guides us now. He still sees the minutes and newsletters, and we know that if we’re not doing things right, we will get a message from him, via Jill or Christopher, to say ‘what’s going on?’”

Local herbalist Sarah Furey on how to get your skin to glow using herbal remedies. The prospect of spring and sunny days makes April a good time to detox the body and cleanse our skin. Instead of looking in envy at youthful faces around you, there’s plenty you can do to regain that healthy glow. Let’s begin from the inside out. The skin is our largest organ of elimination, and if the kidneys and liver aren’t working properly, you will excrete more toxins through the skin. That’s why the importance of a healthy diet cannot be overstated. Antioxidants, vitamins and minerals found in fresh fruit & veg will help your skin to repair; essential fatty acids such as fish oil, flax seed oil or hempseed oil will help keep your skin supple. And, of course, drinking plenty of fresh water will help tone your skin. Toned facial skin means an increased blood supply which will help heal spots and blemishes faster. I give my patients a Witch Hazel and Calendula Cleansing Lotion. Apply morning and evening as an alternative to artificially made products – witch hazel is an excellent astringent which will encourage the blood flow, whilst calendula is a fantastic skin healer. The lotion is also great for teenage acne. I also have a recipe for Carrot Oil which helps rehydrate dry and chapped skin It is an old remedy for sunburn – in fact, carrot oil is found in plenty of commercially available skincare products and sun lotions.

Herbs for Health Witch hazel & Calendula Cleanser

1. Pick small twigs from a bush (witch hazel is grown a lot locally, check

your/your friends’ gardens), pare off a little bark and some young leaves, and weigh out 200g. 2. Put into a saucepan with 500ml of water and simmer gently until the water has reduced to a third. 3. Strain though some muslin or an old pair of tights on a sieve, and leave to cool. 4. Add 2 tablespoons of vodka to help preserve it. 5. Add 100ml a of calendula tincture (any good health food shop will stock this), then bottle and label. 6. Use with cotton wool twice a day.

Carrot Oil 1. Grate two carrots and weigh the grated amount. 2. Add the same weight of good quality Olive Oil or Coconut Oil. 3. Heat the two together gently until the carrots are soft and the oil has turned orange.

4. Strain and bottle. 5. Use sparingly as and when required.

Learning for pleasure with U3A When Martin Gadsden ﬁrst advanced the idea of starting a local branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A), he had absolutely no idea whether it would be successful. Now, some six months later, as Chairman of the Hurst, Hassocks and Ditchling U3A, he has nearly 300 members. “I was simply amazed at the enthusiasm with which the idea was taken up by the older section of the community,” he said to me. “At this rate the ‘grays’ could rule the world,” he chuckled. I was intrigued as to where all these serious academics had been hiding, but the more I discovered about U3A, the more I realised that academic qualifications have nothing to do with the organisation’s objectives. There are no entrance requirements and there is no lower age limit. Most members are in the ‘third’ age of their life, after parental responsibilities and full-time work. As Alan Simmonds, chairman of Haywards Heath U3A, put it: “The word University in our name has the original meaning of a gathering together of like-minded individuals. There are no exams and no qualifications are given.” The official definition of U3A branches says that they are ‘self-help, selfmanaged lifelong learning co-operatives, for older people no longer in full-time work.’ According to Margaret Carroll, chairman of Burgess Hill U3A which this year celebrates its 20th birthday, what this actually means is “those that teach also learn and those that learn also teach. We all learn from each other, support each other and, above all else, have fun doing it.” The ‘having fun’ element was emphasised to me by everybody I spoke to in U3A – a bunch of jolly people bent on learning for pleasure. Each U3A, of which there are 36 in Sussex alone, organises its own affairs as informally or formally as it wishes, devises its own programme and sets its own modest membership fee. Charities in their own right, the U3As are run by volunteers

We all learn from each other, support each other and, above all else, have fun doing it. under the general oversight of The Third Age Trust, the national body which supports almost 900 groups with around 300,000 members across the UK, although new branches are currently starting up at the rate of about 50 per year. All our local groups belong to the Sussex U3A Network (SUN), which organises study days, a summer school and other events. aspect of the South Downs National Park, from Social History to Geology, and each of the 36 U3Aâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Sussex has been invited to participate. The project will end with a major exhibition next summer. Simon Brown is Groups Secretary for the new Hurst, Hassocks and Ditchling U3A and I was keen to find out from him how topic groups are set up and what subjects are most popular. Around 25 groups are already flourishing in Hassocks with

four more in the process of forming up and no doubt many more waiting in the wings, though they have some way to go before they catch up with Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, each of whom run nearly 70 interest groups. The subjects studied range from those which require quite serious intellectual involvement, to simply shared and enjoyable pastimes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Computer Studies, Flower Arranging, Natural History and

Patchwork. And there’s real enthusiasm for a Current Affairs group, said Simon, if only he could find a group leader. All U3A members are welcome to attend activities organised by branches other than their own. Looking at the wider scope of U3A in Sussex, you will find activities ranging from Art to Yoga, from Country Dancing to German for Beginners and from Cookery to Scrabble. Games playing and physical activities too play popular roles in U3A, where learning is interpreted in the broadest possible sense. People pick up on subjects they haven’t looked at since school and others choose topics that they’ve always wanted to study but have never had the time. Generally the activities take place in people’s homes – though perhaps not Country Dancing or Rambling! – and each group has a volunteer leader. Although each special interest group works out its own format for meetings, Simon tells me that in History, Current Affairs or Art Appreciation groups, for example, the leader might typically ask each group member in turn to prepare a short presentation, to be followed by general discussion. Overlaid on the activities of the various groups are regular branch meetings with guest lecturers. And, of course, there’s a strong social side to U3A, with events such as Coffee Mornings and Summer and Christmas Concerts.

If you are now in your ‘third age’ and U3A sounds as though it might be just the thing to keep mind and body active, or even if you’d just like to spend some companionable time with like-minded people, you will have no problem finding a group near you. If it isn’t fun, it isn’t U3A.

4 whole red dried chillis 2 tbsp of fresh chopped parsley Salt and paprika to taste

1. Peel the prawns (keeping the heads to one side),

clean them and marinade in white wine for 2 hours. 2. Slice the chillis and garlic. Chop the parsley and have the salt and paprika in place. 3. When you are ready to eat, put the oil in a small pan along with the prawn heads and 4 tablespoons of the wine marinade. Put on a high heat for a couple of minutes and, with a fork, squeeze the juice from the heads to get all the flavour out. 4. Once the prawn heads are slightly brown, remove from the oil and discard. 5. Now add the sliced garlic and chopped chillies to the oil and cook on the high heat for ½ minute before adding the raw prawns. 6. As the prawns turn pink, remove from pan, sprinkle with paprika, a little salt and the parsley. Let them rest for ½ minute and then… 7. Eat immediately and straight from the pan, dipping slices of baguette into the piping hot oil. Muy delicioso!

Limes When Mike Morris and his wife Pat, a London-based chef, first moved to Sussex, they not only fell in love with the picturesque village of Lindfield, but also its bustling bistro, Limes. Seduced by its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, they were regular diners there and enjoyed the great food and service. So, when the restaurant recently came on to the market, they jumped at the chance to buy it. “We had been searching for a suitable restaurant for some time,” explains Mike. “As soon as Limes came up, we knew it was a great opportunity and exactly what we were looking for. Pat’s the chef, the talent behind the operation, and she is looking forward to bringing her own style of British cuisine to Lindfield.” Originally from Thailand, Pat came to London in 1997 to study and started working at the famous gastropub, The Engineer, in Primrose Hill. After graduation, she returned to Thailand, but her old boss had been so impressed by her inspiration and creativity in the kitchen that he persuaded her to come back. Subsequently, she has worked at many well-known London restaurants, developing her own twist on British cuisine. Since 2008, she has been a principal Chef at the award winning Great Queen Street restaurant in Covent Garden. Sometimes it takes an outsider to help you appreciate what otherwise might be taken for granted, and this is certainly true of Pat’s passion for British food. “I’ve always loved to cook British food. I love its simplicity and the fact that you can follow the seasons, and I plan to develop the menu along those lines. What I particularly enjoy is creating wonderful flavour combinations using local seasonal produce,” she tells me. “I like to prepare everything from scratch, even our preserves and cured meat and fish.” “We will be keeping the old favourites on the menu but we’re also developing it with new and interesting flavour combinations. The emphasis will definitely be on the great taste you can only get from truly fresh produce, delivered daily to the restaurant.”

We’re keeping the old favourites on the menu, but are also developing new and interesting flavour combinations . Along with a la carte dining, Limes will continue to offer its competitively priced Set Dinner Menu from Monday to Thursday. Customers can also pop in for Breakfast or Coffee & Cake up to 12pm, which is when the lunch service starts. “My aim is to create food that I would love to eat,” says Pat. “I’m always thinking: what can I make, so that when my diners take that first bite, it puts a big smile on their face?” The couple have a Twitter site up and running (@LimesLindfield) and will also shortly be launching Limes on Facebook. “Twitter and Facebook will allow us to provide sneak previews of the specials and seasonal dishes on offer,” says Mike. To top it all off, there are two stylish apartments upstairs available for bookings. Sleeping up to four people each, they offer a real home away from home, whether your stay is for business or pleasure.

We arrived at The Cat Inn on a dark and stormy Friday evening, in need of some serious hospitality. We left with full tummies and very big smiles, hours later.

Cat’s where it’s at The heavy 16th century oak door creaked open as I entered the traditional lounge bar, accompanied by my partner and daughter. A big open fire provided the backdrop to the cosy convivial vibe enveloping the room, which was busy buzzing with the friendly chatter of end-of-week locals. We’d come to the right place to relax. Landlord Andrew Russell greeted us warmly from behind the bar and took us through to the dining area – all wooden floors, beams and country charms – where we settled to have dinner. I knew from previous visits that the food at The Cat is superb. Perusing the menu of comforting pub classics and contemporary dishes created by award-winning Head Chef Max Leonard who insists on using only the best fresh, seasonal and, wherever possible, locally sourced ingredients, I told the others they were in for a real treat. For starters, I chose Rare Roast Beef & Potato Salad, and the playful flavour burst of capers, spring onion and horseradish really appealed to my continental roots. Jon enjoyed Seared Scallops, Soft Black Pudding & Crisp Pancetta, admiring Max’s skill in combining textures and flavours to achieve “a genius of a dish”. My health-conscious teenage daughter decided to skip the starter and go with Bahamian Chicken Breast with Mango & Avocado Salad, which came served on a

huge bowl of leaves. She was clearly impressed (and, believe me, that doesn’t happen very often!) with the juicy chicken and fresh, “dreamy salad” – a super healthy dish that didn’t compromise on anything. As you’d expect, The Cat loves fish, and my Rye Bay Skate Fillet, Potato Croquettes & Salad were fab and fresh as the sea. A special mention must go to the fluffiest, cheesiest and tastiest croquettes I’ve ever had the joy to eat. Dessert was a lovely thought but, in the end, we only had room for a mixed ice cream to share. Far from being a cop-out, Max’s wonderful, homemade honeycomb, pistachio and strawberry flavours left us smiling like Cheshire cats. Of course, The Cat is no stranger to rave food reviews. And as winners of the Sussex Food & Drinks Awards (Best Sussex Eating

Almost immediately, go left through a gate and keep left of farm buildings to go over a stile to cross a small paddock, then go over a footbridge into a large field. Follow the obvious path in an easterly direction and go over a footbridge in the field, aiming for the southern edge of woodland ahead. Go through the gate and turn left to pass under the Bluebell Railway, and follow a clear track uphill. On reaching a large open field, keep slightly right (the path is not defined) and aim for a clump of bushes which conceal a pond. Follow the signpost and look for another signpost at the entrance to Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wood. Follow the path through the wood, ignoring all crossing paths, to join Ketches Lane. Cross to the concrete track opposite, signed to Northland, and follow the track, passing farm buildings on your left, then follow the obvious signed path through Northland Wood. Go over a stile into a field and follow up alongside woodland to a junction of paths. Take the path going hard left and follow down a left-hand field edge. Cowstocks Wood to reach Freshfield Lane opposite Garden Cottage. Turn left along the lane and, in about 200 yards, turn left on a track signed to Kidborough. After about 200 yards, look for a signed path on your right, and follow this along a right-hand field edge, then through a copse and out to a field via a kissing gate. The large industrial complex away to your right is the Freshﬁeld Lane Brickworks. Brick making was at one time a major industry in this area. As well as the Keymer Brick & Tileworks at Burgess Hill, there were extensive brickyards at Southwater and Warnham near Horsham. Follow the path down through a large field alongside the Bluebell Vineyard and out to Ketches Lane, opposite Town Place. Turn right along Ketches Lane.

Apart from the obvious need to get from A to B, the main reason we pay premium rate to travel around in our own private, safe and warm boxes on wheels is that driving adds an extra dimension to the joy of life. Staggeringly, a recent AXA Annual Motoring Census showed little or no correlation between the money spent on cars and the happiness of the driver. Can you believe that only 57% of Ferrari drivers actually enjoy driving?! Since the badge on the bonnet seems to be making no substantial difference, perhaps we can all get over ourselves and concentrate on getting on with each other while on the road. Actually, no. Let’s go one better. How about we help each other out there in the traffic? As with most things, driving aggression, concentration or just sheer clumsiness are all a matter of degree. A little patience is our national way. And, like charity, consideration starts at home. Have you noticed lorry drivers’ very own esprit de corps? Some van drivers too, and taxis all help each other, don’t they? Maybe the rest of us can learn a small life lesson from the professional road users who weave a little gallantry into their road craft. Here’s a heart-warming example of how things should be: My other half got stuck in the snow on Clayton Hill, at night. Her little coupé was splayed across both lanes and she might have been stuck there for hours, running the risk of being hit by other cars. Help from a passing 4x4 (and the two good Samaritans inside, thank you, whoever you are) got her going again and she arrived home safely, to my huge relief. And here’s another: A neighbour recently ran out of petrol, with her two small children in the car. Nightmare? It could have been. Within minutes, two drivers had stopped to help, including a man with a van who usefully produced a fuel can. That neighbour came away from the experience much reassured about her faith in human nature and, of course, repaid the kindness with a box of chocolates. What goes around comes around, isn’t that how the saying goes? Now that’s the kind of happiness I’m talking about. www.sussexliving.com

… I was interested to read your article on Chailey Airfield in the November 2012 issue. I grew up practically alongside the aerodrome as it was being built. Although you show a photograph of the old Plough Inn, you do not mention that it and the cottages had to be pulled down to clear the end of the runway. Between the two buildings you can just see the old wooden WWI army hut that was also taken down and moved up to the new site at the Crossways, where it served as a pub before the present Plough was built. The side of the hill was excavated opposite the Plough, to form a steep bank, although it has now been levelled oﬀ. The bank can still be seen at the edge of the woods on the other runway. The runway was of formed a kind of giant wire netting, under which was laid rolls of hessian to simulate the line of hedges from the air. There was a small, arched corrugated iron hanger on the east side at the Chailey end of Bersford Lane (Bower Lane in those days). The brick remains of the petrol pump house can still be seen at the foot of Polecat Hill. The guard house with a pole across the road was set up outside our house and as children we rather annoyed the guards when we climbed our favourite tree on the wrong side of the barrier – ”but this is our garden.” We had a very suave oﬃcer, who claimed to be a Polish Count, billeted on us. We have since learned he never was a Count! After they left, it did become an emergency landing ground. I remember seeing a Wellington there once. A flying fortress blew up after the crew had managed to get out, and I once saw a ‘twin boomed’ Lightening up-ended in what is now the council dump. Later on, a Halifax crashed in the woods to the west of the North-South runway. You can still see bits of aluminium scattered about if you know where to look.

You ask why this upheaval did not leave more of a mark on the surrounding villages? You must remember that we lived in a restricted zone, which stretched approx. 10m inland along the South Coast and communication was limited. There was a police post outside the Fox and Hounds in Haywards Heath and the Birch Hotel, where all cars and buses were stopped and you had to show your identity card to prove you lived in the area. For us boys, they were exciting times without realising the greater implications. Rather like people playing war games on their computer, except this was for real. Ian Clayton, Hassocks
