Editor’s comment
Thank you for picking up the April issue of Sussex Living Magazine. The sight of spring lambs frolicking through the fields is enough to bring joy to anyone’s heart – I hope you like the little fellow on the front cover! Ruth Lawrence visited local farmer Donald Blake at his farm in Hurstpierpoint (p.69) where she heard the story of his farming life – a good life indeed. With another busy month behind us, we have a full and exciting issue for you. We celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday by taking a look at her many visits to Mid Sussex (p.6), and make sure you check your local town information to see if they have any celebrations in store. We get your home and garden spick and span with our spring cleaning feature starting on page 22, with handy tips and tricks from Lisa de Silva. As a double whammy turn to page 62 where you can see how to get the most health benefits out of your cleaning, with our new monthly fitness feature, Body Buzz. This April is National Mills Weekend on the 14th and 15th. From page 29 you can read about the mills and windmills in Mid Sussex which will be open to visit, although there are many more open all over the country which you can find on their website. Gardens are opening for the NGS Open Garden season, and we visited Banks Farm in Balcombe (p.34). There are many to visit and they make a wonderful day out for keen gardeners and nature lovers, and all raise money for charity. We wish all our readers and advertisers a happy month, and we will see you here next month!

This April sees the Queen celebrate her 90th Birthday, and to mark the occasion we take a look at her many visits to Mid Sussex
The
Queen Mid Sussex and The Queen have a long relationship, beginning in 1931, when 5 year old Princess Elizabeth was bridesmaid at a Society wedding in Balcombe. It was the fi rst of many visits. As Patron of the South of England Show (SEAS) The Queen has visited Ardingly three times, in 1974, 1984 and the Golden Jubilee year of 2002. Carole Hayward, Vice-Chairman at SEAS was “delighted and thrilled” to meet The Queen in 2002. Carole explained to the Queen how the use of Agriculture in the classroom was encouraged and remembers vividly “she was wearing wellington boots and asked one of the teachers if she had learned anything.” For many people in Mid Sussex it will be the visit to Burgess Hill on Friday 26th March 1999 that stands tall in the memory. On that day the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh arrived by helicopter in the grounds of a local school at 2:45pm, and were greeted by 1,000 enthusiastic pupils. From there The Queen progressed to the town centre and met some of the 5,000 people who had lined the
streets. She engaged in a walkabout on the way to the Help Point in Church Walk. Here she saw what the facility offered for local people. Town Council employee Liz Clark said at the time, “I was taken aback by how natural the Royal couple looked and came across.
It was, “A big day for the town and such a pleasure to have The Queen visit and perform the opening ceremony. It was absolutely splendid.” Fate had more in store for Anne and in 2003 The Queen presented her MBE at Buckingham Palace. Anne explained all recipients wait in an anteroom and then line up in a corridor until their turn comes. The Queen said to Anne as she attached the honour, “I hear you developed a credit union” (now the West Sussex Credit Union). Anne “thanked her Majesty,” telling me she was “ just a little bit stunned at the awesome experience.” She continued, “I backed off, curtsied and that was it. I’m still overwhelmed by it, even now.” Let’s hope The Queen has a wonderful 90th birthday on the 21st April, and that we get the chance to see her again in Mid Sussex. Happy Birthday Ma’am!

The atmosphere was electric and overwhelming.” Paul Homewood from the Mid Sussex Brass Band remembers clearly. “We were playing in Church Walk and the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh walked passed us as we were performing. The crowds were waving Union Jacks and St George’s flags. It’s a highlight that I and many other members of the band enjoy recalling.” The Queen and the Duke moved on to the Triangle Leisure Centre, which she opened and then toured. Anne Jones MBE, the current mayor of Burgess Hill was there that day and previously “had the pleasure of breaking ground on the development.”

Full of joy and the promise of spring, the song of the skylark is a welcome and delightful sound as they climb and swoop on high in search of a female companion
Songs on high I was out stretching my legs on the downs when the sky began to sing. It felt like the fi rst day of spring, warm enough to cast off layers and with a light so glaring I had to search out my winter-hidden shades. I had to squint against the sun to fi nd the singer in the sky, a fast receding skylark climbing towards the sun, trying to summon a female with his urgent music. A skylark’s song is fast, variable and complex, delivered within a narrow frequency range. He usually sings for around two minutes but a half hour song has been recorded before. Most climb to a height of 50m before levelling out but some fly above 200m, warbling continuously as they ascend. I watched him almost disappear with height and then, after a short period of gliding that followed the fluttering climb, saw his wings fold back, head point down and the steep, fast dive begin. Just when it looked as though he was about to crash at high speed, he levelled out and landed gently on the ground.

SUSSEX LIVING April 2016
A skylark’s song is fast, variable and complex, delivered within a narrow frequency range In April, the first brood appears, hopefully followed by two more in May and July. Skylarks nest on the ground in knee high vegetation, feeding their vulnerable chicks on spiders and insects for the first week of life. This bird is a specialist, reliant on farmland for breeding and feeding. Before the decline in skylark population in the 90s, skylarks were so plentiful that they were caught and eaten. At the end of the 19th century they were exported to Paris as a culinary delicacy. The trade was centred in Brighton as the London market was catered for in East Anglia. Birds were captured by dragging a net across fields at night and during the season, two hundredweight were sent to France every day, a total of 3,360 skylarks. The Victorians would also shoot skylarks for sport and capture males, confining them in cages for their song. Now there are around a million breeding pairs in the UK and targeted conservation is helping them recover from their steep decline. Although hard to detect on the ground – their mottled browns and buffs rendering them semivisible on chalky soils – they take centre stage in their song flight. More poems have been written about the skylark than any other bird and they often begin the dawn chorus, singing before first light. It’s a song of joy and the herald of warmer, lighter days; a harbinger of spring and new life. www.sussexliving.com

Sussex Living supports the local Mid Sussex community. Send us all your news and events, then read about them here. Volunteer for SusSAR Sussex Search & Rescue (SusSAR) is the primary volunteer resource used by Sussex Police to search for, and rescue, vulnerable missing people. SusSAR is on call 24 hours every day throughout the year. As a 100% volunteer organisation, members give their time free of charge and expect nothing in return but satisfaction from a job well done. SusSAR exists to serve the community of Sussex through the goodwill of its members and charitable donations. The unit can be called out by Sussex Police or by Search & Rescue Teams in other counties requesting our assistance at any time. Currently, SusSAR’s current two main focuses are finding an indoor base/HQ where they can store equipment, use it as an office and also for indoor
training purposes, ideally in central Sussex. As a self-funded unit with no government funding, Sussex Search and Rescue is continually on the lookout for funds in the form of donations and grants, as well as any opportunities to raise funds such as support for events, mainly in the form of marshalling at large sporting or community events. SusSAR also regularly partakes in ‘bucket shakes’ outside supermarkets, shops or in High Streets as an alternative means for raising funds.
Royal celebrations The 21st April sees East Grinstead joining with the whole Nation as we celebrate the 90th birthday of her majesty the Queen. The Town Council is hosting a beacon lighting ceremony at East Court. We are waiting for the announcement
from Buckingham Palace before we can give the exact timing, but it is likely to take place around 7pm. A choir will be singing a song from each of the nine decades and will conclude with rousing choruses of Happy Birthday and the National Anthem. Tea and coffee will be on offer. This is a free event and will be open to all who would like
to mark this special date. For further information on these and other events in the town visit the Tourist Information in the library or call 01342 410121. Please do let us know if you are having a Street Party or other celebration for the Queen’s Birthday, we would love to hear

With a welcoming new premises on Preston Road, Brighton, Bowley & Gallagher are an independent funeral service offering you exactly what you need to celebrate your loved one
The Bowley & Gallagher families are delighted to invite their friends, clients and associates old and new to the public opening of their new premises on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th April between 11.30am and 3.30pm. Join us to look around, catch up and enjoy some refreshments.
Bowley & Gallagher With a wealth of experience and excellent reputations for compassion and professionalism, it’s no surprise that two of our most respected and successful family-owned businesses, Bowley Funeral Service in Hassocks and P & S Gallagher in Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill have joined forces for an impressive new venture in Brighton. While both fi rms are keen to assure clients that their other local businesses will continue as normal, the two companies have long enjoyed a relationship as business partners and their new office located on Preston Road, Brighton is a natural extension of their continued success and growth. “We’ve got a mission with our new office,” explains Matthew Gallagher. “There are hardly any independent funeral directors left in Brighton and we wanted to reverse that and bring all the benefits of independence to the local community.” Paul Bowley grew up in Brighton, while Matthew studied and now lives there and this local knowledge, along with their personal and flexible service offers clients real advantages.
“We answer our own phones, we have no shareholders to please, or specified suppliers we have to use, so our prices are competitive. Our sole aim is to create the right funeral for the person who has died and the loved ones left behind,” says Matthew.
We aim to make everyone as welcome as possible, so they feel they can pop in and talk to us about their needs or to plan a funeral With over 35 years in the business, Paul has seen a remarkable change in attitudes to funeral services. “It’s now all about celebrating someone’s life,” he tells me. “It’s often no longer about wearing black and mourning and many people now choose to use Celebrants or Humanists to conduct ceremonies, over the more traditional and formal church services.” The new office in Brighton reflects this new openness with a bright and welcoming ambience. Along with state of the art facilities and equipment, the offices will

also act as a training centre for funeral directors across the South East, along with those working in the local caring community. Matthew is a national verifier for the Independent Funeral Directors College and relishes the opportunity to nurture new talent and raise standards within the profession. “We aim to make everyone as welcome as possible, so they feel they can pop in and talk to us about their needs or to plan a funeral,” says Paul. In fact, funeral planning is a fast growing area, as it inflation-proofs costs, reduces tax liabilities, offers the chance to choose the type of service you’d like and most importantly, lets loved ones know that you are having the send off that you wanted. Again, as independents the service is completely bespoke. “There’s no need to choose from package A or B,” assures Paul. “We can organise anything requested.” At what can often be a difficult and challenging time, it’s good to know that the personal touch offered by Bowley & Gallagher is there to support you.

Saturday mornings during the summer. Based on the concept used at the London Olympics the service aims to make visitors feel welcome and to encourage them to take the short walk into East Grinstead. Many have travelled a long way, often from as far afield as Australia, and are keen to know more about the town’s history and what it has to offer. The new Meet & Greet season starts this Easter and volunteers are needed to help on Saturdays between 10.00am and 12.30pm. Greeters meet passengers disembarking from Southern trains and also ride on the Bluebell Railway to talk to passengers. No experience is needed, just a preparedness to approach strangers most of whom are receptive and interested in the information available. Why not join the team? 75,000 and counting No, that is not the number of years CARE has been in action, but the number of jobs we have carried out in our thirty two years of helping in the community. To mark this milestone, Sujan Wickremaratchi, the Mayor of Haywards Heath, presented Marjorie Kinnie, our oldest client, with a flower filled Sussex trug. He was ably assisted by Marjorie’s regular volunteer, Dorothy Goss, and Helen Starnes, Chairman of CARE. Rev Vaughan Tong, founder of CARE and first Chairman, remarked: “The volunteers have done an amazing job over the years. It’s OK having ideas, especially if others end up doing the work. Do give our congratulations to the present team.”
East Grinstead Music & Arts Festival The Festival movement was established in the 1870s at a time of major educational developments and by 1904, 60 Festivals had been formed. A Federation of Festivals was established in 1920, which has since developed into the British and International Federation of Festivals with over 300 affiliated in the UK alone. It was decided in November

year. The first Festival took place in June and July 1968, incorporating Piano, Choral, Instrumental, Drama and Dancing. Different schools were used for each section for many years. Entries grew and other sections were introduced, such as OneAct-Plays, Brass, Organ, Arts & Crafts and Photography. 2007 saw the 40th Anniversary of the festival and this was celebrated with a garden party in November, and next year we plan to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. Sadly, 2007 also saw the end of both the Piano and Instrumental Sections, and we are now left with Singing, Speech and Drama and Dancing, our largest section. The festival is on from 16th April to 1st May. See egmaf.org.uk for further information.

Celebrating Shakespeare This April marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Across the country events will celebrate this much loved playwright and poet of English culture and, in the small downland church of St Botolph’s we too will join with them. Combining choral song, modern characterisation and physical theatre techniques, This is my Theatre will bring the epic tale of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet to life. This is the first time an event like this will have taken place in the church which has recently undergone major restoration to repair the roof, timbers and walls, funded by the Churches Conservation Trust. As further renovation and rejuvenation is needed, Sarah Slator, Director of This is my Theatre, is delighted to donate a proportion of money raised from the event to the Friends of St Botolph’s to support their work. 7.30pm Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd April Tickets cost £10 (£7 for
Friends of St Botolph’s) and can be purchased from local businesses, call Sarah Slator to find out where and for further information 07732 253311 or Valerie Booth for information about becoming a Friend of St Botolph’s valbooth16@hotmail. com
Can you help CCHF? Are you energetic, enthusiastic and reliable? Can you help disadvantaged children experience some fun and magic here in rural Sussex? If so, we need you to help on our weekend and/or 5 night residential activity breaks for disadvantaged
children as a volunteer and help bring some laughter into their lives. CCHF All About Kids, based in Hassocks, exists to improve the lives of disadvantaged children through residential and respite breaks and essentially your role is to provide each child with the chance to have fun and leave the worries and stresses of their everyday lives behind them. Of course, we also want you to have fun at the same time and you need to be willing to join in with whatever fun and games are happening on camp including visiting the local beach, going to farms and adventure parks. We also need minibus drivers. You will need to have a D1 classification and have at least 5 years driving experience with a clean licence but we will provide training. Volunteers must be aged 18+. Acceptance is subject to interview, two references, training and enhanced DBS check. Interested? Please call 01273 847770 or complete an application form via our website www.cchf-allaboutkids.org.uk
Book a talk Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance is appealing for local groups, clubs, societies and other organisations to book a talk about the life-saving work of the charity as it takes delivery of a new helicopter. The charity has launched a new presentation including information about how the helicopters are tasked, the aircraft, types of missions, the crew, blood transfusions and night flying. The talk by a volunteer will also cover running costs, survivor stories and how the air ambulance makes a difference to patient outcomes. The air ambulance has recently taken delivery of a new and faster AgustaWestland helicopter which boasts a larger cabin, giving the medical teams 360 degree access to the patient and allowing life-saving, timecritical interventions inside the aircraft, which isn’t currently possible. If you would like to book a talk, which is free of charge, please call Fundraising Support Assistant Lucy Waterson on 01622 833833.

“Much as it is a service we did not want, nor was it an easy one to deal with. It was kind, thoughtful, respectful, helpful and considerate. It is a hard decision to take when you are considering ending the life of a trusted and loved pet who is truly a member of the family. Nonetheless, it was a decision taken in order that our beloved Inca would not suffer or be frightened as her illness was set to mercilessly progress. We are so glad you were there to help her passing be warm, kind and gentle. It is comforting to know she was unaware of what was happening beyond being in her favourite place, with the ones she loved and trusted unconditionally.”

Roll up for the
Orchards!
Need a shopping centre with gifts, fashion, food and entertainment all in one stylish and accessible place? Welcome to the Orchards Shopping Centre in Haywards Heath This summer, Haywards Heath will benefit from an exciting programme of events taking place at the spectacularly successful Orchards Shopping Centre, which last year achieved an astonishing footfall of 5.75 million visitors. Manager Nicola Bird told me that now the fi rst phase of refurbishment has been completed, the stage is set for the fi rst event on the 2nd April when the ‘Entertainer’ arrives in town. The mayor will cut the ribbon for the grand opening of this fun toy shop and lots of giveaways will be up for grabs. National success ‘Roman’ has just opened a store in the centre and ‘Calliope’

who joined in September supplying gorgeous gifts, continues to be hugely popular. Their motto of “There is a gift for everyone” is apt; their store is bursting with desirable goodies for every age and taste. A pop up shop, ‘Something Else’ run by Suzy Hultquist has recently opened; after flourishing as a successful fashion market trader for many years, Suzy’s loyal customer base will be delighted that she now has her own shop. Superdrug has had an extensive refit and all those
essential items are now easier to fi nd and beautifully displayed. The Farmers Market on Thursdays continues to go from strength to strength with eight stalls include a cheesemonger, a bakery, fishmonger and pet supplier while the regular market on Saturday offers three local artists, clothing, accessories, plants and jewellery. Mid Sussex District Council has allotted an extra 34 parking spaces next to the Orchards making parking less of a squeeze, particularly on a Saturday. Being at the centre of the community, the Orchards continue to support good causes; this year they are sponsoring the Haywards Heath Lions Club Swimathon, Haywards Heath Rugby Club, Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, Haywards Heath Bike Ride, Bolney Pram Race and many more. One of the largest celebrations will be the 175th train anniversary celebration, www.sussexliving.com
honouring the fi rst train that pulled up in Haywards Heath, making it a town. The town’s wonderful community is taking part and First Central Insurance will be a major sponsor; one activity that promises to be popular will be ‘Lenny the Land Train’ which will travel from the train station to the Orchards. The town’s celebrations will be on the 17th and 18th September; roads will close and all businesses will be involved while a Victorian funfair will be providing old fashioned thrills in Victoria Park. The Haywards Heath Bike Ride takes place on April 10th and people can register the day before from 10am until 1pm. Over the years the Orchards, as well as many other sponsors and lots of town volunteers have raised thousands of pounds for local causes with this event and the target is to attract a thousand riders. Marshals are always required so do get in touch if you have a couple of hours to spare on the day. The 4th June will offer a full day of entertainment with ‘One Great Day’, including pony rides and a bouncy castle disco to fundraise for Great Ormond Street Hospital – last year the event raised over £4,000 thanks to the generosity of the customers. On the 2nd July the Orchards is holding ‘A Day to Remember’ where they are featuring a petting zoo, magic shows and music. Everyone is welcome, including vulnerable residents living with Alzheimers and Dementia. ‘A Day at the Beach’ returns to the Orchards from 24th to 27th August. You can expect to see Marco the Magician
entertaining every day and Punch and Judy thrilling audiences with traditional puppetry. There will be sand pits and a larger, musical bouncy castle to keep the kids happy.
One of the largest celebrations will be the 175th train anniversary, honouring the first train that pulled up in Haywards Heath

Due to the enormous success of previous years Christmas lights switch on celebrations, the Orchards will be maintaining the tradition on the 26th and 27th November. This year there will be alpaca as well as reindeer in the centre and the following three Saturdays will see the return of Santa and his elves, ready for photo opportunities. The photos only cost £1 and all proceeds go to Great Ormond Street Hospital. The footfall for the weekend reaches above 50,000 so it promises to be a runaway success yet again. The Orchards has been trading for 34 years and the refurbishment has opened up the centre to make it more modern and spacious. The events that Nicola is organising are certain to attract local residents and those from further afield to enjoy a stimulating, exciting range of activities and entertainment during the year ahead. With the cost of keeping children entertained, the Orchards has provided a much needed service to families in the community who can enjoy affordable, high quality fun throughout the year. Locals are loyal to retailers with the right products and Nicola explained that this was the reason that businesses have flourished here and gained a fi rm customer base in the area. The Orchards is a very special shopping centre, particularly with young families arriving as new homes are being built. Nicola has witnessed the community of Haywards Heath coming together in what is so much more than a place to shop. It is more about the experience of socialising and becoming part of the everyday life of a town and community. SUSSEX LIVING April 2016

HOME & GARDEN
BY LISA DE SILVA
Fling open those windows, turn up your favourite music and get your old joggers on, because it’s time to get spring cleaning! Follow these great tips and you will soon be enjoying a sparkling home, and a well deserved cuppa
Sparkle, Sparkle
spritz & blitz! Love it or hate it, spring cleaning is a great way to refresh and re-energise your home and garden. While some take pleasure in giving their homes a really deep clean, for others the pleasure is all in the end product - a clean and sparkling space. Whatever your personal feelings, here are our tips for a good old fashioned spring clean.
Getting Motivated
This can often be the hardest part of spring cleaning and if you need some motivation to get going why not open all the windows, put on some of your favourite music, burn a scented candle and make a schedule. One way of making the task less overwhelming is to allocate a specific amount of time each day until the task is complete, or tackle the job room by room committing to x number of rooms per day.
Decluttering
Any Japanese organising consultant worth their salt knows that to effect a really deep clean, it is necessary to declutter the space beforehand. If

possible clear everything from the room you are about to clean and see what the space feels like. Then consider all the ‘stuff’ and organise it into piles; things you need and use daily; things you love; things you need but rarely use; things you no longer want or need and fi nally, any paperwork. After the room has been thoroughly cleaned, you can then organise your ‘stuff’ so that things you use a lot are kept within reach; things you love are on display; rarely used objects are stored, paperwork is fi led and any discarded items are either sold, donated or thrown out.
Cleaning Equipment
Having the right tools for the trade will help in terms of efficiency. So, check your hoover is in tip top condition, gather scourers, sponges, microfibre cloths, floor mops, old toothbrushes and any cleaning products you’ll need. Micro-fibre cloths are great for cleaning as they are super absorbent, non-abrasive and you can simply use them with water for streak free cleaning and polishing. Old continued on page 24

toothbrushes are also great for cleaning grout as they’re the perfect size for scrubbing between tiles and getting into awkward crevices. If you use a duster, remember that real feathers hold the dirt far more effectively than synthetic ones.
Cleaning Products
There are now cleaning products for every occasion, but if you prefer natural products look no further than bicarbonate of soda, lemon juice and vinegar, as all have miraculous properties when it comes to cleaning. Bicarbonate of soda is a great deodoriser, simply dilute with water and use the solution to wipe down fridges and dishwashers, or soak objects like old thermos flasks or tupperware to refresh them. Its ability to cut through grease makes it a great cleaner for burnt pans, or by adding to boiling water it can even help to clean your drains. Lemons contain enough acid to kill most of the bacteria found in your home and is particularly useful for kitchen and bathroom cleaning. Use to sanitise a chopping board, disinfect a counter or mop the floor. It is also brilliant
Clear everything from the room you are about to clean and see what the space feels like at removing stains, just squeeze the juice over the stain to soak and leave for around 20 minutes before rinsing with water. If you need to brighten any fading whites, soak in a solution of lemon juice and water to create a mild bleach effect. White distilled vinegar is particularly useful in the garden and makes a great non-toxic weedkiller continued on page 26

when used neat. You can even dilute it to feed acid loving plants like azaleas and hydrangeas.
Creating a Cleaning System
Whether you are working to time or by room, if you perfect a cleaning system you will be more efficient and effective. So, once you’ve decluttered the space the best place to start is at the top, working downwards. Use your vacuum cleaner on ceilings and walls, dusting any light fittings and wiping down doors and woodwork. Ensure you remove everything from any shelves and after cleaning the shelf itself, wipe books and objects with a clean soft cloth before replacing. If you have carpets or rugs, either clean them yourself if you have the right equipment, or get the professionals in. Wooden floors may benefit from sanding, staining and waxing depending on the condition. Upholstered furnishings can usually be washed in your own machine, but if in doubt seek advice. Blinds can be wiped over and windows polished.
In the bedroom, turn the mattress, wash pillows and quilts and maybe replace your bedding with lighter options suitable for warmer weather. You can also sort through and discard any unwanted makeup and clear out your wardrobe. Bathroom grout may also require cleaning, so don’t forget your toothbrush. Mix thin bleach with bicarbonate of soda to make a paste using a toothbrush to apply to the grout. Leave for around two hours in a ventilated room before rinsing off to reveal revitalised looking grout. The garden will also benefit from similar treatment, so set too scrubbing decks and patios, weed your borders, wash, sand and treat your furniture, inspect any outdoor lights and have a general tidy up.
Cleaning by Room
Each room will benefit from the type of clean described above, but some rooms require additional work. So, in the kitchen you’ll need to defrost the freezer, clean the fridge and the oven. Again, if you don’t fancy using any of the excellent products available for oven cleaning, there are many local specialists available to step in.

The 14th and 15th May is National Mills Weekend, a celebration of our milling heritage and the opportunity for you and your family to visit some of the glorious examples of wind and water power still standing today
Milling Heritage This annual festival of our milling heritage provides a fantastic opportunity to visit mills, many of which are not usually open to the public. For the past few years the event has been given a theme for mill owners to follow and provide relevant displays and exhibits. The theme for 2016 is “Vintage Power.” Before the widespread use of fossil fuels and electricity, wind and watermills provided the only source of power for many different processes - from
making flour, paper and cloth to hammering metal and extracting oils. You can explore mills that produced, or still produce these products, some restored to working order, some derelict, some still working commercially. There are three main types of windmill in Sussex: the post mill, smock mill and tower mill. A post mill is so named because the timber body pivots round a central timber post so the sweeps can always face into the wind. The body containing

the machinery and millstones weighs over twenty tons and were often turned manually by the miller using a long timber pole projecting from the rear. Later post mills were fitted with fantails which harnessed the wind to turn the body automatically. Tower mills have a static tower of brick or stone topped by a timber cap which could revolve to allow the sweeps to face into the wind. and are said to have taken their name from a resemblance to an old farm worker’s smock garment. Sweeps are the term used in Sussex and Kent for the windmill’s sails. There are many mills to visit all over the country, but here is a taste of those situated in Mid Sussex:
Nutley Post Mill
Chailey Smock Mill
Chailey smock mill is situated on Chailey Common adjacent to a Yew Tree which is said to traditionally be the centre of Sussex. The Mill has stood on this site since 1864, having been moved by oxen cart from Newhaven. It ceased to grind corn in 1911. During the war the Windmill was used for sleeping quarters for the nurses from nearby Chailey Heritage, when it was camouflaged. The Friends of Chailey Windmill was formed in 1988 and a museum was created consisting of rural implements used by the likes of Blacksmiths,

Farriers and Woodworkers. Over the years the exhibits have become more varied and now include a fine collection of photographs depicting Chailey over the past 150 years and a record of the Village’s military history dating back to the eighteenth century. On National Mills Weekend the Downland Radio Group will be using the Mill to make contact with other Mills throughout the UK and
Nutley post mill is the oldest surviving windmill in Sussex although she has only stood at her present location since the 1830s. The central post has been dated to the mid sixteenth century by dendrology testing. It is also one of only five surviving open trestle post mills in England and is currently the only example in working order. Milling ceased in about 1908 and the mill remained semi-derelict until 1968 when a restoration project commenced which lasted for four years. Most of the work was undertaken by unpaid volunteers. The mill is open on Sundays from 10am to 5pm starting from 24th April, including on Sunday 15th May for the National Mills Weekend.
Jill Post Mill
Jill is a post mill in Clayton. The earliest reference to a windmill at Clayton is from September 1765 when an indenture was made between Viscount Montague and Edward Oram of Clayton:

“Lease all that part of ground near to Duncton Gate on which a windmill has been lately erected by the son of the said Viscount and contained in the whole by five rods every way for a term of 99 years.” John Young Lashmar had been working a Brighton post mill, built in 1821, which stood to the east of Dyke Road. Brighton was expanding rapidly with the coming of the railways and building work progressed back from the sea, taking away Mr. Lashmar’s wind. In 1852 Lashmar’s mill was sold then brought up to Clayton where it was re-erected to the west of Duncton. A tower mill was erected in 1866 next to the remains of Duncton. The windmills ceased commercial work around 1906. It was around ten years later that they acquired the names of Jack and Jill. Jill Mill was restored to full working order by a team of volunteers between 1978 and 1987. She will be open to visitors from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday 15th May only and a local group of morris dancers will be performing about 2pm.

Oldland Post Mill
Oldland post mill, Keymer is another example of an old post mill which was substantially modified with iron machinery during the latter half of the nineteenth century. This included installation of a steam engine drive to run the millstones when the wind failed to blow. Although auxiliary power was common in smock, tower and watermills,

Cobb’s watermill is situated in Hurstpierpoint. The site was occupied by a watermill as early as 1605 although the current weatherboard and brick building mainly dates from the 1860s. The known owners and occupiers included the Avery family, Lindfield family, Pickett family, Ede family, Packham family, Mr Ellins, Mr Weeks, Fred Sayers and Percy Trower. The present waterwheel was installed in 1868 and milling capacity was increased to four pairs of millstones around the same time. By the 1960s the mill was only used to grind animal feeds and the millstones turned for the last time on 6th January 1966. The building is now partially converted into a house but still retains the waterwheel, basic machinery, millstones and auxiliary engine. The mill

OPEN GARDENS
BY RUTH LAWRENCE
Banks Farm
Opening for the NGS Open Gardens, Banks Farm offers beautiful views and tranquil areas in its nine-acre grounds. Ruth Lawrence pays it a visit, and is loath to leave As I entered the long drive towards Banks Farm in Barcombe I knew I was about to fi nd something special; a long spreading view of the Downs began to unfold and the wide nine-acre garden soon lay open as a map in front of me. Gardener Geoff Holden has tended this land for 19 years, nurturing the original plan of the Warren family who created the garden in the 1950s. Last opened to the public ten years ago, a change of ownership has meant the gardens are to be shared once again for two NGS open days in April. The fi rst thing that hit me was the scale. Extensive lawns in front of the house lead the eye down to the land that dips into luscious foliage below the splendid views that curve far to the south from Blackcap
to Glynde. Sited on a small hill, the vista is an impressive introduction to the treasures that lie below; a small lake, sheltered and partly hidden has a tranquillity that draws the viewer in to sit on the banks, watching the Indian Runner ducks emerge from the undergrowth. Geoff told me how the purpose of the garden was always to provide a link to the landscape beyond and create the feeling that you are sitting in a wider environment. The original owner was very keen on trees and shrubs and there is a huge variety which has proved a rich food source for birds. A kingfisher hunts the water, a group of long tailed tits dart searching for food, tiny goldcrests are occasionally spotted and woodpeckers are frequent visitors. There is even a resident merlin, that one day dived under Geoff’s arm while he watched it chasing prey. Kestrels, sparrowhawks, buzzards and red kites are seen above the grounds and barn and tawny owls can be heard at night. There are an incredible number of specimen trees at Banks Farm, with fi fteen varieties of Oak and three different deciduous conifers including a Ginkgo. There is a splendid Dawn Redwood, named because it was once only known in fossil form until its discovery in China in 1941. There is a huge London Plane next to the house that was planted in the 50s. The species sheds its bark, which is why it was so suited to life in large polluted cities such as London. Three varieties of Eucalyptus provide an exotic feel while a Willow walkway leads the visitor through a bower which should be in leaf during the open garden days.
Banks Farm is a garden of contrasts; water, hidden corners and intimate planting coexist with space, large mature trees and all round views

Lots of trees were lost in the ‘87 gale although a Monterey Pine planted two years later now stands towering above its surroundings. An orchard lies sheltered behind a walled garden and a strip of acidic soil to one side of the lake is host to Rhododendrons and Camellias. There will be a wide variety of spring plants on display during the open days including Tulips and Californian Lilac. Banks Farm is a garden of contrasts; water, hidden corners and intimate planting coexist with space, large mature trees and all round views. “It’s a dynamic garden with a naturalistic feel,” said Geoff, adding that “you have to think on a big scale with a garden this size.” The new owners are looking forward to sharing their piece of paradise with people, and on the open days, Geoff will be on hand to give advice, chat and answer questions about the garden and its planting. “People will be free to wander about, if you become lost, just head uphill!” he joked before letting me stroll around on my own. I sat by the lake for a long time, watching reflections dance on the water and listening to a light breeze rustle the willow branches overhead. Visitors will be loathe to leave this garden. It exerts a hypnotic pull and just when you are about
to move on, another sight or sensation fastens you to the ground again to watch and listen. On the open days there will be home-made teas in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and plentiful parking. There is so much to draw the attention here that most people are likely to linger. It’s a wonderful and welcome addition to the NGS year; go and enjoy!

TREES OF
WORTH
Worth School holds an enviable position on the beautiful 500-acre Worth Estate which formerly belonged to Lord Cowdray. This April sees the Abbey and grounds open for the fi rst time as part of the National Gardens Scheme I met Dr Brian Doggett, former Head of Science at Worth School, to show me some of the stately specimen trees that frame magnificent views across wooded hills. His arboreal passion has prompted him, together with Grounds Manager Steve Turner, to label ninety of the spectacular trees in preparation for the two open garden days as he feels that “trees are things that everyone sees but few notice” and he aims to bring these tall treasures the attention they deserve. The Worth trees are mostly about a century old; the grounds were reworked in the 1890s by Edward Milner, who was the designer for Cowdray Park and the taller trees now stand noticeably higher than the original oaks that used to dominate Sussex. Brian’s love for the estate’s trees has inspired him to write a book about the most noteworthy specimens which will be available on the open days, and as well as signing copies he will be on hand to answer questions from curious gardeners and tree enthusiasts. One unusual discovery revealed that Lord Cowdray once moved the ten meter high Atlas Cedar to screen the laundry chimney from the main drive; today it stands 34m high, slightly shorter than the 39m Coast Redwood, the 36m Noble Fir and the 37m Black Pine that stand like sentinels near the school’s main building.
A spectacular Tulip Tree which was planted in the 1950s by the Abbot to celebrate the independence of the monastery should be in bloom on the open days. Other delights in the grounds include the Grade II listed Abbey Church, the compact Pinetum and the monks’ Quiet Garden, while extensive woodland beckons the more adventurous. Brian’s son attended the school which turned coed in 2008; he now teaches there and will carry on once his father retires this year to, amongst other things, travel to the natural habitat of the forest giants in California. Brian’s love of trees was ignited by his grandfather who would take him on long woodland walks and his enthusiasm inspires pupils to discover how, in his own words, “Trees make the landscape and add flavour to a place”. The open days support NGS charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Hospice UK, while proceeds from tea, coffee and cake will go to the charity Outreach Peru. The opening of Worth’s grounds promises to be an exciting addition to the NGS calendar and a rare chance to get close to forest giants and explore beautifully created gardens in tranquil Sussex countryside.

GARDENING
BY FLO WHITAKER
GARDEN Hoe-down
Flo Whitaker’s tool of choice? The mighty garden hoe – a sharp blade on a long stick which can be lethal for the pesky weed and handy in the afterlife. Now there’s a thing! The other day, I was reminded of a trip to Egypt. It was long-ago, but I can still vividly recall wall paintings in an ancient tomb depicting agricultural scenes. Despite the passing of four thousand years, the tools and methods were instantly recognisable. Whether you’re digging, sowing, watering or pruning, the basic principles of gardening haven’t changed much. But I digress… never mind ancient tombs, how’s your shed? You’re looking bewildered, so I’ll jog your memory. You remember… that wooden
building at the bottom of your garden. The place you haven’t visited since October. Yes, that’s it! Now, tell me honestly. Is your shed a temple of order and efficiency, or a chaotic mishmash that would fail to pass muster at the most disorganised jumble sale? Yep, me too. In spring, there are 1,001 gardening jobs to be done, all seemingly requiring our immediate attention.
Is your shed a temple of order and efficiency, or a chaotic mish-mash that would fail to pass muster at the most disorganised jumble sale? 40
SUSSEX LIVING April 2016
However, if you resist the urge to garden and spend an afternoon tidying up, you’ll really notice the benefits. An organised workbench, with tools and equipment properly sorted will save you hours in the long run. Be warned, you can’t do it all – standards have to slip somewhere. Remember: a tidy shed = a fi lthy house. Never mind. This year, weeds are one of the biggest challenges in the garden. After such a mild winter, seedlings that would have normally perished in the frosts will start into rapid growth the moment they feel the warmth of the sun. Now’s the time to deploy the most lethal weapon in the gardeners’ armoury – the hoe. It’s the most brilliant, yet overlooked tool of all. There’s probably one languishing in the darkest corner of your shed right now; blunt, rusty and dismissed as “useless”. Nothing could be more further from the truth. Known since ancient times, the hoe is, essentially, a sharp blade on a long stick. ‘Sharp’ is the key word. Most garden centres sell inexpensive sharpening stones; abrasive hard stones that can be used to quickly put an ‘edge’ on a gardening tool. Not just designed for hoes, they should also be used on spades and trowels. Pushing a blunt-edged implement through soil is hard work and counter-productive. Weeds are robust by nature; mangling with a blunt instrument will only wound, whereas a sharp blade quickly cuts them off at the base. Larger tap-rooted weeds require removal by hand, but even these, if caught young, will not survive an encounter with a well-sharpened hoe. Ancient Egyptians buried their dead with all manner of things, including food and clothing, as well as seeds and gardening tools. Such items were considered essential for life in the next world. I agree. If there are no potting sheds in heaven, I’m not going. www.sussexliving.com

Plant,
grow,
flourish Honesty, passion and integrity are at the core of Garden Sage, a newly opened nursery in Hassocks with a comprehensive range from seeds to established plants
Our gardens offer us so many benefits: tranquillity, retreat, beauty and connection with nature are but a few. I visited the recently opened nursery, Garden Sage, to discover a new and creatively presented gathering place for those who love their gardens and are curious to develop their full potential. Run by Hurstpierpoint residents Ed and Josie Nugent, Garden Sage is a family business with honesty, passion and integrity at its core combined with an eye for detail. Their strong yet subtle signage is a world away from brash commerciality – an etched bowler hat, as worn by Edwardian gardeners on a vintage moss green background speaks to those who hanker for good old-fashioned service with a contemporary twist. Ed has worked in horticulture in the UK and America from the age of 16 and Josie used to create gardens in London and work at the National Trust garden at Scotney Castle, which is where the pair eventually married. Ed and Josie are keen to pass on their love of gardening to their customers. A three-part evening course for novices is going to be launched by Josie, dealing with wilderness taming, maintenance and garden improvement. Ed will run talks and demonstrations from the restful garden lecture
room, a peaceful spot, complete with garden magazines to browse and informal handmade tables from which to enjoy a cup of tea. Landscape gardeners can bring in clients to view plants in situ rather than looking at photos and customers can benefit from Ed and Josie’s personal advice and experience.
The couple have a strong commitment to their community; Ed intends to host talks for local clubs and societies and their plants are mainly British grown. Ed has lived in this part of the world his entire life and has an unbreakable connection with the area, an advantage when advising customers about which plants will establish easily, preventing them wasting money
by purchasing unsuitable varieties. Garden Sage offer a comprehensive range of plants ranging from delicate ferns to established trees and hedging. I noticed a slow growing, evergreen Japanese White Oak and an unusual Helwingia Chinensis, with a flower that sits down the centre of its leaf. Customers can order specific plants or trees not already in stock and the couple intend to start supplying a small range of top quality tools, bulbs and traditional seed varieties. With many garden centres offering similar plants and declining choice, it’s refreshing to find a nursery that goes the extra mile to source that special plant that will add pleasure and interest to your cherished garden. Follow Garden Sage on Facebook or drop in for a chat and info on upcoming events. Like me, you will leave with a head full of ideas and possibilities for the fast approaching summer.

BY LINDA NIGHTINGALE
Retire
in Style
When the time comes to think about retirement housing, there are many options to consider. Linda Nightingale highlights some of them here Purpose built retirement villages are springing up everywhere providing a high level of service, care and comfort for the gently ageing. There are currently 14.9 million people in the UK aged 60 and above and this figure is expected to exceed the 20 million mark by 2030. Interestingly 3.5 million 65+ live alone and nearly 70% of these are women*.
Retirement villages Retirement “villages” often encompass many acres of landscaped gardens and provide a tranquil setting in which to live with other like-minded people. There is
42
SUSSEX LIVING April 2016
It is important to note the level of facilities and care as this can vary enormously. Some offer accommodation for a large number of residents whilst others are more intimate. Developments can offer virtually anything a retiree could need from sports and hobbies and social dining to more personal care as the need arises.
usually a wide choice of homes available to suit all needs and of course the care and facilities on offer can extend from the joy of an indoor heated pool, to convivial communal relaxation areas which are ideal for meeting people. In addition, there is the added benefit of security and knowing that there is also a high level of care available. Retirement Communities Beautiful Sussex also has a wide choice of wonderful conventional retirement homes where, in some cases, there is a choice of renting or buying. These too offer excellent facilities from safety and security to a live-in management team. Day to day living can be handled by the staff from home maintenance to cooking and many offer entertainment, dinner dances, book clubs, and a variety of social activities providing an utopia of living and an end to loneliness.
24 hour support is a comfort to many and some can even offer room service (hotel style) which include the delightful decadence of breakfast in bed!
Take a note The larger retirement villages usually have more facilities to offer but you may be daunted by numbers and prefer a more intimate arrangement. Make a note of exactly what is on offer and whether it suits your needs. Consider your personal space and whether you have a private garden or balcony, a pleasant view from your lounge window and often overlooked but very important, lots of cupboard space for the many loved trinkets you have collected over the years. Be cautious and factor into your financial budget the annual maintenance costs and clearly understand what is included. Look at the cost of the purchase and the likely value for your family in the future.

Bungalows versus modern retirement homes It was not that many years ago that those reaching a “certain age” looked to selling their family home and moving into a bungalow. However, there is a dwindling supply of bungalows to meet rising demand as many of these were built in the 1930s. Nowadays, many buyers seek a more modern, luxury lifestyle which can provide long term care and comfort and short term “lock up and leave” facilities allowing owners to travel the world and enjoy life to the full.

Selling Your Home this Spring? Steve Boyes Director of Martin & Co
The spring is a great time to sell your house or flat. The gardens are in bloom, there’s plenty of good light and hopefully mild weather! Properties look their best and the market is full with buyers. Many families are also looking to match their purchase with the end of the school year. With the onset of lighter evenings buyers are more
prepared to go house hunting. We are seeing a surge in demand for properties as people do want to move this time of year, but unfortunately there is a lack of good quality properties coming to the market. For further insight into the Mid Sussex property market have a look at my blog at http://midsussexproperty. blogspot.co.uk/. If you are considering a move or would like an idea of how much your home is worth, then give us a call. Mention this ad when you call and we will pay the VAT on our fees on any instruction up until April 30th 2016.

Moroccan Lamb Tagine
This dish is sweet, spicy and full of flavour. I prefer it on the sweeter and spicier side so I add extra fruit and chilli, but you can adapt it to your own taste. I would usually cook this dish the day before or in the morning then heat it up in the oven for half an hour before serving. Serve with tomato and roasted garlic couscous. SERVES 8
800g lamb (preferably shoulder), diced 2 tbsp olive oil 3 medium onions, chopped 6 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp paprika 2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp turmeric 2 tsp cayenne pepper 3 tsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground ginger Sprinkle of chilli flakes Salt Pepper 2 tbsp plain flour 500g passata or tomato juice 400g tin chopped tomatoes

cook for five minutes, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, toss the lamb with salt, pepper and flour and set aside. In a pestle and mortar mix all the dried spices, a drizzle of oil and the garlic to a paste. When the onions are transparent add the lamb and spice paste and brown for 10 or so minutes until the meat has colour. 2. Add passata, tomatoes, honey, chickpeas and stock. Bring to a simmer, add the apricots, dates and half the fresh coriander, stir and place lid on pan. Leave to rest for
10 minutes then place in the oven for 2-3 hours, taking out occasionally to stir. 3. For the couscous, measure out the dried couscous into a large bowl. Mix in two roasted cloves of garlic, or the equivalent garlic paste. Add the sun dried tomatoes, fresh parsley and mix well. Pour on boiling water just covering the couscous, cover with a plate and leave for five minutes. Serve with the tagine with the rest of the chopped coriander and crème fraîche on the side if you wish.

Purple power Purple Sprouting Broccoli is a powerhouse of goodness and deliciousness, plus it is pretty on the plate and mighty versatile – winner! Purple Sprouting Broccoli hails from the Brassica genus, which is derived from the Brassicaceae family that contain around 4,000 species. It’s a group including mustard, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and horseradish to name but a paltry few. Purple Sprouting Broccoli has much smaller florets than the common Calabrese Broccoli. These florets are closer in style to a cauliflower head. It also has a number of long thin stalks making it a more subtle plant altogether. It arrived in the UK with the Romans, after being cultivated around the Mediterranean for hundreds of years. Being trendy, it goes without saying that Purple Sprouting Broccoli contains ‘must have’ super-food qualities. Fans of this purple wonder stuff will know that among other things, it’s a good source of Vitamins A, C and K, folic acid, calcium

and fibre as well as being low in calories – what’s not to like? There’s no doubt that it’s best picked when the purple is most vivid. Years ago, it would be boiled into submission, a soggy school dinner from hell, cooling on the lip of the plate, the pool of moisture draining into other food. Steam it, par boil it, roast it, stir fry it, but don’t be disappointed when the purple reverts to a greenish tinge. Cook it tender, but retain a little crunch, allowing the delicate flavours to be released and enjoyed. It’s a little sweeter than Calabrese Broccoli, maybe a little nutty too. Like many foods, Purple Sprouting Broccoli is grown all year round, mostly flown in from China and India to make a date with your plate. But if you want it ‘In Season’ buy fresh, buy local and buy now.

St George’s Day often comes and goes without much recognition, so why not make this the year to celebrate the patron saint of England? This wholly traditional Victoria Sandwich Cake will complete your St George’s Day celebrations. If you’re not a purist (like I am) feel free to add some whipped cream or butter cream to the filling.
Ingredients 225g gluten free self-raising flour 225g caster sugar 225g salted butter 4 eggs 1tsp good quality vanilla extract 4tbsp good quality raspberry jam (seedless) icing sugar to dust 1 Pre-heat the oven to 180C, gas mark 4. 2 Grease and line two 8 inch cake tins with baking parchment. 3 Place the flour, sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla extract into a bowl and beat until combined. 4 Divide the mixture between the two tins. 5 Place on the middle shelf of the oven and bake for 25 minutes. Be sure not to open
the oven door in the first 20 minutes. 6 Check your cake is cooked through by inserting a metal skewer into the center at a slight angle. If the skewer comes out clean, the cake is cooked. If the skewer has some batter on it, place the tins back in the oven for a little longer. 7 Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in their tins for around 5 minutes. After this they can be removed from the tin and left to fully cool on a wire rack. 8 Once totally cool place one sponge cake, upside down, on a plate and spread the jam on the top. 9 Place the second sponge cake on top, the ‘right way up’ and dust with icing sugar.

Celebrating 10 years of Hair Obsession in Hurstpierpoint, this April receive 10% off all services in this family run and child friendly salon
Top of the Mops This month sees the 10th anniversary of family run hairdressing salon Hair Obsession on Hurstpierpoint High Street. Offering hairdressing services for all ages at competitive prices, its ten years of success have been overseen by dynamic mother-daughter duo Sally Slaney and Mandy Mantle. When starting up the business a decade ago, Mandy had a very clear vision of how they wanted their salon to be. “Having worked in other salons since the age of 16 and with 20 years in the hairdressing business,” says Mandy, “I was determined to open somewhere that was approachable and super friendly, so customers would feel welcomed and not intimidated when coming to have their hair done.” Clearly this attitude has worked and Hair Obsession has a loyal customer base from all over Sussex. “We’ve been busy since day one,” says Sally who oversees the business side of things. “In fact, my daughter Mandy has many of the

same clients she had since starting twenty years ago and has worked alongside our current hairdressing team for many years now, which I think speaks volumes.” Specialising in wedding and prom hair, Hair Obsession is also one of the only hairdressers in Hurst that welcomes children and toddlers (my own son had his very first haircut here!). “We love doing children’s hair,” says Mandy, a mother of two herself. “Because we have such a relaxed family atmosphere in the salon, mums, dads and their kids can feel comfortable and welcome. We are not put off by tears and tantrums!” she laughs. Recently refurbished in 2015, the salon is perfectly situated on Hurst High Street and is a fixture in the local community. “We absolutely love being on the High Street and are good friends with all the local businesses here in Hurst. Many of our clients just pop in for a chat or to pick up some products,” says Mandy.
We have such a relaxed family atmosphere in the salon, mums, dads and their kids feel comfortable and welcome
Professional product ranges on offer include Tigi, L’Oreal, GHD and Eco Kid – products that all the staff love and have tried and tested themselves. It’s this attitude that perfectly encapsulates Hair Obsession’s approach to their business. As Sally explains, “We know what we do and we do it really well. There’s no pressure on staff to sell products or push for targets and this is what makes for such a nice atmosphere here for our staff and clients alike.” To celebrate their 10th anniversary Hair Obsession are planning celebrations and competitions throughout the year – find them on Facebook for more information. For the month of April they are offering a 10% discount on all services in the salon. Just quote ‘Sussex Living’ when you book.

BEAUT Y FASHION ST YLE

In the season of delicate blossoms and pretty pastels fashion has followed suit and taken a romantic, feminine turn. Get involved with frills, ruffles and trims Are you ready for a spring fl ing? Frill is back in a big way and brings a much-needed burst of romance to your wardrobe. Ruffles and flounce are responsible for this season’s favourite pretty, feminine look: some frills are big, some are small, some dresses are made of all over cascading tulle, while others have just a bit of breezy trim. Now more wearable than ever, ruffles still evoke a certain feminine charm but also have a sense of drama and edginess that makes for the perfect evening look. The days of birthday party frocks are long gone – frilliness has grown up with us and a well-placed ruffle is the perfect decorative touch to your outfit this spring. Ruffles can be found everywhere this season; on dresses, sleeves and even trousers. Adding feminine softness to the tailoring and breathing life into the garment with the extra movement the adornments give, frills guarantee any look to be full of fun and charm. A maxi dress made out of flowing mille-feuille tulle in your favourite spring colour, paired with a stone washed denim jacket and classy boots is a fantastic weekend ensemble for some elegant adventures. Subtle frills on an otherwise neat and structured dress, especially around the

Dive right in and get covered in voluminous frills by donning ruffled skirts and shirts! Anything that is frilled or even fringed goes this spring because the season is all about movement – and flapping, swinging clothes are the best way to indulge this fun trend. Alternatively, those of you who only want to dip a toe into the frill-fi lled lake should consider a yoke blouse or ruffle trim shirt worn with boyfriend jeans or look for frill that just decorates collars and hemlines to say hello
to that feminine charm. If you want to incorporate the trend into your every-day work look, try pairing a breathtaking peplum top with a knee length pencil skirt or trousers. Cropped flared trousers and bell sleeves are other garments to keep an eye out for if you want to sneak a couple of ruffles into your outfit. To take it up a notch, opt for a structured or exaggerated flounce and just pull on a pair of tailored trousers – voilà! As for accessories there are two ways to go – sparkly and elegant jewellery and shoes round out the feminine look, while to grunge it up a bit just add some canvas sneakers to the mix. So whether you choose to go minimal with just a couple of trims or for head-to-toe structured tiers of lettuce-edged tulle, give your outfit a gamechanging and edgy flourish for the ultimate romantic spring look. www.sussexliving.com

Paul Cassidy BDS, DPDS Implant Surgeon
Andrew says, “ Dental implants have been a saviour for those patients with uncomfortable dentures and others that have lost teeth and are unable to chew properly. Modern materials are far more natural looking and numbing techniques virtually pain free. Paul has been a valuable addition both to the team here at Oakmead and also to the local community. Patients no longer have to travel to implant clinics further afield because we also accept referrals from other local surgeries. His surgical expertise at Oakmead has also meant patients don’t have to join long waiting lists for wisdom tooth removal and other surgical procedures.” Paul qualified from Queen’s University Belfast, and completed Postgraduate training in Oral Surgery and Sedation at The University of Bristol. He has worked in practices specializing in Implantology and Oral Surgery for 15 years, and has received training from leaders in Dental Implantology and bone-grafting. Implant treatments offered by Paul range from the replacement of a single missing tooth right through to fixed alternatives for denture wearers. On a more personal level, he is a keen musician and has played guitar in a number of bands, although it appears his music career is destined to remain purely amateur!

For timeless fashion cool don the sexiest jacket of the season and get engines revving with your leathers! The biker jacket is back in the spotlight – after always lurking in and out of sight since the 40s and quickly becoming an item worn equally by men and women – it is a must-have item this spring! Perfect for the changing April weather, with bouts of wind and rain, a leather motorcycle jacket will keep you warm, dry and oh so trendy. Leather jackets first became popularised by Hollywood films, where the clothes worn by the characters would convey their ‘status’ and attitudes – a leather jacket would automatically be an emblem for ‘cool’, like Johnny Strabler (Marlon Brando) in The Wild One. So it’s really no surprise that the trend caught on so quickly! Back in 2016, it’s time
to grab your own, reworked biker jacket and jump on a motorbike (or in the car) and show everyone how it’s done. There are many different styling methods to try, but this spring why not pair your biker jacket with a knee skimming skirt and chunky, tread sole boots or sandals? And for colder days, wide-legged trousers, a loose t-shirt and boots do the trick. Go the extra mile and finish off the look with smoky eyes and a natural lip. It won’t be a problem if you’re not a fan of real leather, many high street retailers will have faux leather garments to choose from, while vegan leather is also becoming more and more accessible, so there’s really nothing standing between you and this cool (and practical) trend!

Clean up
shape up! Body Buzz April’s here and if you
haven’t done your spring cleaning already, now’s the time to start. Why not kill (or better still clean!) two birds with one stone while you’re at it and use any household chores to get moving? We all know that the sense of achievement gained from spring cleaning has a positive effect on the mind, but can a good old spring clean and clearout be good for your body? The answer is a resounding ‘yes’! Doctors and fitness professionals have long extolled the benefits of adding extra movement into your lifestyle – from walking instead of driving to climbing stairs instead of taking the lift. Although wielding a feather duster is never going to burn as many calories as going for a jog or bike ride and isn’t a substitute for aerobic activity, it’s still possible to maximize upon these seemingly mundane movements and reap rewards for your body. So just how many calories can potentially be
burned doing household chores? This all depends on how long you spend doing these activities, as well as your existing fitness level and weight. As a guide, vacuuming can burn on average 120 calories, gardening almost 160 and general cleaning around 125. Aside from the stats, it’s also about capitalizing on the repetitious nature of
As a guide, vacuuming can burn on average 120 calories and general cleaning around 125 chores to build strength too. The key is to do it correctly to avoid strain and injury and in turn see the benefits. Activities such as washing the car and raking the lawn can also work
certain muscles groups and get the blood pumping plus it gets you out into the fresh air. When it comes to spring cleaning it also really pays to get the whole family
involved. Younger children are normally pleased to be given a task to do. It can help to give them a real sense of purpose, involving them in family life and away from too much screen time. So what are you waiting for? Don those yellow gloves, put on some uplifting music and get moving. You might just enjoy it.
Tips for turning housework into a workout l Lunge while you hoover. Keep your upper body straight with shoulders relaxed and back. With feet and toes pointed ahead, step one foot forward and lower your hips until both knees are at a 90-degree angle. Make sure that your front knee is directly above your ankle. Back up carefully to starting position again and repeat. l Widen your circle. When cleaning

windows, glass or mirrors, make big circular movements to work your arms and shoulders and do it fast for added value. Listening to music helps. l Reach for the top. Stretch up extra high to those pesky cobwebs in ceiling corners to really feel it in the muscles along your sides. l Save your back when bending down to clear out
cupboards. Bend your knees instead and you are halfway to a squat - a low impact exercise, that if done regularly can help tone thighs and buttocks and add core strength. l Do the twist. Squats Clearing out eyelevel cabinets? Face forward and twist to reach the cabinet or any other surfaces for that matter and give your waist muscles a workout.
CAUTION: If you are unsure of any new excercise regime please consult your GP before commencing.

Local WALK
Clayton Walk This lovely April walk affords stunning views and covers open downland – hopefully adorned with some wild flowers – Jack and Jill Windmills, pretty bridle paths and a Grade I listed church This 4 mile walk starts and finishes from the car park at Clayton Green. It initially climbs steeply up to Jack and Jill Windmills, and then follows the South Downs Way to Pyecombe before heading north to follow round the base of Wolstonbury Hill. After the climb up to Jack and Jill, there are no significant hills although there is a moderately steep descent into Wellcombe Bottom. Parts of the route were extremely muddy when surveyed in February 2016 so please be prepared! At the entrance to the car park, cross Underhill Lane and follow a bridleway uphill to a gate leading on to open downland. Turn right and climb steeply uphill to eventually reach the car park beside Jack and Jill Windmills. Go through the car park, and turn left gently uphill on a rough track, and where the track forks, turn right along the South Downs Way.
Pass through the buildings of New Barn Farm and in 100 yards at a cross paths, turn right downhill on an enclosed bridleway with Pyecombe Golf Course on your left. Pass to the right of the clubhouse and join the A273. Cross this road with care and turn left on a narrow enclosed path which runs parallel with the A273. Turn right into School Lane and follow this lane uphill towards the church. Just before the church, turn right into the Wyshe and follow this bridleway past houses and a play area. Pyecombe Church is a Grade I listed building and is known as the Shepherd’s Church. The Shepherd’s Crook known as the Pyecombe Hook was made in the former forge situated opposite the church. The church also has a Tapsel Gate which was the subject of a recent feature in this magazine! The bridleway narrows and becomes enclosed, and leads to a four way junction of paths on the flank of Wolstonbury Hill. Carry on ahead for a few yards, and then go left over a stile and on to open downland. Bear right towards another stile which gives access into woodland. Do not go over this stile, but go left on a chalk track going steeply downhill into Wellcombe Bottom with Wolstonbury Hill immediately in front. Ignore a bridleway coming in from your right and stay on the track and go through a bridle gate with a restored Dew Pond on your left. Dew Ponds were made by farmers in dry hilly places like the South Downs to ensure that their stock had enough water to drink. Wellcombe Bottom used to contain a rifle range but this has long since gone. continued on page 66 S u ss e x L i v i n g April 2016

Moving freely
Do you want to improve your flexibility, mobility, posture and breathing? The Feldenkrais Method may be your answer, especially if you are interested in enhancing the quality and richness of everyday life Although you may not have heard of the Feldenkrais Method, the benefits are wonderful. Using precise and gentle movement to explore the way we move, it can enable us to develop new and healthier patterns of action. It is a way of ‘rewiring’ the brain using movement, attention and awareness. The Method, developed by Moshe Feldenkrais uses the brain’s capacity to adjust to new challenges, to develop new skills, even to recover from injury. By using the Feldenkrais Method we are able to use our brain’s plasticity and create new neuronal connections. This leads to both physical and emotional improvements, opening a new world of ease in everyday movements. Garet Newell, the Educational Director of the Feldenkrais International Training Centre,
This gentle method is suitable for all ages and abilities, opening up a new world of movement studied with Moshe Feldenkrais, graduating in 1983. She has since been instrumental in bringing the Feldenkrais Method to a wide audience through her teaching in London, in the Sussex-based training programmes and as a Trainer throughout Europe, in Australia and in the US. “Feldenkrais is a wonderful method for those who want to improve their flexibility, mobility, posture and breathing. It can also help those recovering from injury or those with backache or chronic pain,” explains Garet, who is based in Hassocks.
This gentle method is suitable for all ages and abilities, opening up a new world of movement in work, relaxation and play. It is particularly popular with those working in the performing arts sector, as it opens them up to express themselves more fully and authentically, as the physical benefits of Feldenkrais spill into other areas of life. It is becoming well-known amongst professionals in the sporting world as a way to enhance skills as well as an effective aid to recovery. “The more flexibly you move, the more flexibly you think,” says Garet. “It promotes different solutions and ways of seeing and understanding. In this sense, it is not just about ‘fixing’ problems, but about increasing awareness and improving the quality and richness of daily life.” Garet’s main emphasis has been directing the four-year, part-time training courses which are based both in Lewes and in Ditchling and organized through the Feldenkrais International Training Centre, one of the first training centres established in Europe. Over 300 Feldenkrais teachers have graduated from the many trainings which have taken place in Sussex since 1991, travelling from all parts of the UK, Europe and as far afield as Australia, the US and Hong Kong. But in order for more people to be able to experience this incredible method, Garet has developed a new course, Feldenkrais For Your Future, which runs over a one year period and comprises eight weekends. It is held at the Adastra Hall in Hassocks, a short walk from Hassocks train station, and is designed for those interested in personal development. The next course begins at the end of April and there are introductory days this month, including one on 3rd April, for those wanting to experience the Feldenkrais Method before committing.

I visited Donald and Veronica Blake at Tott Farm in Hurstpierpoint where they have lived and worked for over half a century. Settling in with a cup of tea, I listened to their vivid descriptions of farming life during and after WWII. Donald, who was five when war broke out, remembers collecting rubbish for the war effort when he was at school in 1942. Then at the age of eight, when the school was closed so the pupils could help with food production duties, he would sit on the tractor and help with potato picking. Horses were an essential part of the farm before the war. Donald remembers his grandfather recalling how the horses who returned from the First World War would jump at any loud noise as it reminded them of the shelling they had endured. A photo taken in 1942 shows how labour intensive farming used to be; a threshing machine is handling twenty acres of winter wheat which would have been carted away by horse and wagon. Outside the peripheries of the photo Donald tells me there would have been two teams of Land Girls working alongside the men to load sheaves of wheat from the field to the stack. Two Land Girls would have supplied sheaves to the men on the thresher, one man cutting the bonds and another feeding the machine while the threshed straw went by an elevator to be stacked. The dustiest job went to a Land Girl who raked out the chaff and cavings

The farms would have been unable to keep running were it not for the Womens’ Land Army while two men bagged the wheat into two and a quarter hundredweight sacks to be loaded onto a trailer and taken to Cobbs Mill at Sayers Common. During the war, most of the male farm workers were in the ARP or Home Guard which subjected them to a long working day. Donald told me how the total workforce of fourteen included two farm workers who came out of retirement and the local baker and postman both of whom would have done an early shift in their own jobs. CHECK The farms would have been unable to keep running were it not for the Womens’ Land Army and many came to the country from London or Brighton, some staying and marrying in the area when war was over. Donald’s uncle married a Land Girl from London called Doris in 1946; she decided to make Sussex her home and Donald showed me the brooch that was eventually awarded to her sixty years after the war, when their monumental effort was fi nally recognised by the government.
Women also carried out timber work, being known as ‘lumberjills’ and belonged to the Timber Corps, managing forests, running sawmills and producing timber for aircraft and wood based minesweepers. They also collected alder and buckthorn bushes to produce the special charcoal used in high explosives. Land Girls gathering hay

Lady Trudie Denman, president of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes. By 1918 there were 23,000 Land Girls and when WWII broke out the Women’s Land Army was hastily reformed in September 1939. Lady Denman, with her experience of the previous war, was appointed Director and offered her home, Balcombe Place as HQ. She waged a recruitment campaign that declared “The Land Army fights in the fields of Britain where the most critical battle of the war may be fought and won.” Donald remembers a Land Girl who was billeted at the family farm during the war; the girls received a wage of 28 shillings a week plus living accommodation and were volunteers whose motivation ranged from patriotism to a preference for outdoor work over confi nement in a munitions factory. Lady Denman was apparently notorious for persuading girls to join the Land Army; some of her society friends dreaded her coming to their homes as the staff would leave to become Land Girls! The girls, who often came from the cities, were more open to new ideas than the old men who were left on the farms and unwilling to work with modern machinery. The girls learned how to fi x ploughshares and threshers and knew how to quickly rebuild a Fordson Standard tractor – one Kent farmer declared that the women worked harder, were cleaner and more conscientious than his male workers. Two thousand Land Girls were trained at a local agricultural college; the training lasted six weeks and girls were then sent to farms all over the country. Amazingly, it took until 2008 for surviving Land Girls to be awarded a veteran’s brooch in recognition of the supreme effort they made during the war. They were eventually invited to march past the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day in 2000 and it was due to strenuous campaigning that the women fi nally received the honour they were due. Women of the WI did much to help the war effort too. Donald described how they would make jam and bottled fruit from produce picked from the hedgerows and preserved using a portable canning machine with a large handle which was rotated to seal the cans. Blackberries and rosehips were collected, the latter earning three pence a
Lady Denman
pound so that the hips could be turned into syrup rich in vitamin C. Acorns were used as a coffee substitute or for feeding pigs, and if you had a pig you were obliged to surrender two ounces of bacon per week from your ration. Donald recalls how his family would kill one pig a year for extra sustenance and rabbits were a useful source of fresh meat, the pie being preferable to the stew. Agricultural workers were able to obtain meat pies on top of their rations in recognition of their hard manual work and it was apparently easier to obtain extra supplies by bartering instead of relying on coupons. Donald’s mother would invite Canadian troops over for afternoon tea and they would bring peanut butter and kidneys in return – there were always ways to supplement the meagre rations and nothing was ever wasted. Pubs however did tend to run dry as beer was fi rmly rationed. The war had a permanent effect on farming practices. Tractors took over from horses and mechanisation meant that the workforce diminished, taking people from the land and beginning the migration towards towns and cities. A man and horse would take a day to plough an acre whereas a tractor enabled the farmer to handle five or six acres in the same time; now it’s possible to plough two acres an hour. Milk and egg production increased from 200 eggs per year to one per day per hen. These changes were due partly to science and better preventative medicine for livestock. During the war, the War Agricultural Committee would force compulsory land use to plough more fields and hedges were ripped out to enable more efficient production. Now,

Suffolk Cross sheep at Tott Farm
continued from page 72
the policy has reversed and farmers can obtain payments from the Countryside Stewardship Scheme for turning part of their land over to encourage wildlife which has diminished from decades of habitat loss. Donald has planted several hundreds of yards of new hedges and described how it is easy to spot where ancient hedges would have stood by the presence of large trees in the middle of a field, following the line of the vanished hedge. On Tott Farm, Donald and Veronica gave up their dairy herd in the 1980s to concentrate on their flock of Suffolk Cross sheep. The ewes are noted for being good mothers and two Charollais rams can cover forty ewes each. The ewes begin
breeding at two years old and usually produce two lambs a year which are sold at six months when they weigh around 40kg. Maintaining the sheep and keeping them healthy is easier than it used to be with sheep dipping a thing of the past. Now, an injection does the same job and foot rot, which used to be a large problem, is now preventable with inoculation. Local farmers have managed to hold onto the life they love by diversifying; some are now into holiday accommodation while others offer DIY horse liveries or adapt agricultural buildings for small businesses. Donald has a vast storehouse of memories from the war years and despite the hardship, it seems that necessity encouraged people to be versatile and inventive. Parachutes were prized for the silk which was used to fashion clothing and underwear and energy was conserved by making hay box cookers where food was boiled and placed in a hay box to continue cooking. Cars were rare and everyone had bicycles or walked, while a combination of exercise and rationing meant that people were naturally fit and used to hard work and frugality. Some memories describe a world more closely linked to the natural world; Donald recalls the sight of thousands of spider webs stretching across furrows in a ploughed field and crows stealing straw from the top of freshly thatched haystacks. A lifetime of intimate contact with the land has provided Donald and Veronica with a memorable legacy passed down to children and grandchildren while their stories of a challenging yet richer world provide inspiration to those curious enough to reconnect with the land they inhabit.

Now that we enter the month of April there are some exciting events to look out for in East Grinstead. One big outdoor event not to be missed is the Vintage Bus Running Day, which takes place in the High Street on Sunday 10th April. It’s a firm favourite with residents, visitors, transport enthusiasts, parents and grandparents. On the day the town is filled with wonderful restored vintage single and double-decker buses; brightly painted in red and green with the distinctive sound of a chugging engine, it’s a sight not to be missed. The buses re-create the bus routes of yesteryear connecting the town with the surrounding villages. It’s a rare chance to travel by bus for free on roads that these days have no bus connections, and if you wish you can hop on and off the different routes as you please. Rest assured you will return to the High Street eventually! Travel is free throughout the day and timetables are available to purchase in the High Street. The annual event, taking place in East Grinstead for the 21st year, runs from 9.30 in the morning to around 4.00 in the afternoon. Sackville College will also be open to the public during the day for the first time this year and will be serving teas and coffees. This is an early opportunity to visit the College before the summer opening in mid-June to mid-September For further information on these and other events in the town visit the Tourist Information in East Grinstead Library or call 01342 410121. If you think of Mid Sussex you don’t automatically think of the sea, however within this region there are several branches supporting the RNLI, including the Hurstpierpoint and District Branch. First opened in 1962 by Anthony Oliver, who went on to become deputy head of fund raising in Poole (where the RNLI College is and home of training), Anthony was working for a Mr Allen who had a farm in Albourne, and Mr Allen became the fi rst Chairman of the branch. I met with the current Chaiman, Jo Kaddish to talk about the branch today. Jo joined the committee in 1991 after being approached by Chairman at the time, Gwen Stapleton. As a child Jo and her sister had collected for the RNLI in Eastbourne, where their father was a member. She enjoyed it then so thought, why not? Jo went on to become Chairman of the branch in 2004, and now does talks for the likes of the WI, Rotary and the Trefoil Guild. Gwen herself is a long standing member of the Hurst and District Branch, joining the committee in 1982. She was appointed Flag Day organiser in 1984, taking over from Jill Money,

and has been organising the annual House to House and Street collections ever since, even today as a nonagenarian! On average they raise £3,500 from these collections alone, amounting to £80,000 since 1982. Jo tells me after the collections they all
The RNLI do a marvellous job, saving at least 140,000 lives since the charity was founded in 1824 gather in Gwen’s kitchen and celebrate with tea and cake whilst counting their week’s takings. As well as the House to House and Street collections on the 1823rd April, the Hurst and District Branch have many fund raising events planned including a quiz on the 9th April, a lovely cream tea garden party on the 19th June in Jo’s garden
in Hassocks, a coffee morning on the 8th October, a dinner dance with a Big Band on the 26th November and various stands at fairs and Christmas markets throughout the year; to raise the 8-11,000 this branch does every year they know they have to keep busy. And it is all worth it; the RNLI do a marvellous job, almost all on a voluntary basis, saving at least 140,000 lives since the charity was founded in 1824. Training is arduous for the boat crews and lifeguards with weekly outings on the boat and practice sessions in a pool which can simulate extreme weather conditions, such as force 10 gales. They also have a flood rescue service with fully equipped Land Rovers, and international flood rescue specialists. Thanks to people like Jo and the hardworking committee of 12, and many others like them, the RNLI can carry on their 24 hour service, 365 days a year and continue to save lives.

Opera for All MUSIC & ARTS
BY JENNY LETTON & MICHAEL WITHERS
Think about ‘opera’. Are you thinking about expensive tickets, tuxedos and gilded theatres? Now think about opera in your local Village Hall. Impossible? Not a bit of it! Innovative local company Heber Opera has been bringing ‘grand’ opera into community spaces for two decades. Productions are always fully staged, sung in English and performed ‘in the round’. By bringing opera into Village Halls and churches the group has won over audiences in many places where it performs regularly and has a substantial mailing list of regular followers who have come to love this style of performance. The true magic of an ‘in the round’ production is the involvement of both cast and audience in the performance partnership. With no barriers between audience and performers, the singers’ expressions are clear to see, and the power of the music envelops and involves everyone in the story being unfolded. As an audience member, you could fi nd yourself holding a prop, the

person next to you might burst into song and become part of the action, someone may be sitting at your feet, or be singing right in front or behind you. Expect the unexpected in a Heber Opera production! So why isn’t more opera performed in the round? Heber Opera’s Musical Director Michael Withers explains: “Because it’s hard! You need soloists and chorus who understand this performing style and who will commit 100%.” Heber Opera uses local soloists, trained voices used to coping with having the audience on all sides. Heber Opera has found that the rewards of this approach are huge. With the audience so close to the drama and emotion they are carried along
The true magic of an ‘in the round’ production is the involvement of both cast and audience in the performance partnership with every twist and turn of the plot. Audience members have commented that they have never previously understood the plots in such detail. The quality of performance has regularly been praised by audiences – on one occasion an audience member said he had seen the very same opera at a London opera house a few weeks before (costing a lot of money) but for him Heber’s production was much better! Heber Opera hasn’t always performed in the round. When Roger Clow formed Heber Opera in 1989, it was with the idea of presenting some of the many English operas that have, for various reasons, been neglected. In the early days, most of the performances fell into this category, but as the company grew Heber Opera began to explore its own interpretations of the more mainstream repertoire. Since the www.sussexliving.com
Heber Opera performance will dispel that myth at a stroke. An opera is, after all, only musical theatre, and its stories of love, jealousy, magic and tragedy are not far different from today’s West End productions. Alongside bringing opera into the community, Heber Opera is proud to offer talented musicians and singers the opportunity to take part in operas generally considered too ambitious for most groups. Heber Opera’s Spring 2016 production is The Pearl Fishers by Georges Bizet. The most famous aria from this opera is the duet, sung by Nadir and Zurga, a musical theme that is echoed throughout the show. With Musical Director Michael Withers, and Dorothy Withers directing the action, Heber Opera is performing this musical gem in May. start, Michael Withers has trained the chorus and soloists as well as adapting and revising the orchestrations for chamber ensembles more suited to the style of performance and venue spaces. The very fi rst production was The Rape of Lucretia, performed at the now defunct Gardner Arts Centre in 1989. The next few productions were also played on traditional stages, but in 1995 Heber stepped out from behind the proscenium arch and produced its fi rst show in what has now become its trademark style – performance ‘in the round’. Once established, the in the round style liberated Heber Opera from performing in theatres, opening the way to staging opera in different sorts of venues. Nowadays, Heber Opera tends to favour using village halls like Uckfield, Hurstpierpoint and
Steyning (to name but a few) and churches such as St Peter’s in Henfield and St George’s, Kemp Town, but has also done its share of outdoor events. Over the 25 years of Heber’s existence, the cast has got used to coping with some ‘interesting’ performance challenges: The Beggars Opera was performed in pouring rain – the audiences had umbrellas, the orchestra was under cover but the cast just got wet! When performing Otello in Lewis the question arose of how can we get Otello to arrive by ship when we’re performing in a castle on a hill? And fi nally, sometimes the challenges of different venues cause hilarity, for example when choosing the wrong door means spending the rest of the act in a cupboard! Heber Opera is a selffunding group that believes opera should be open to all and not an inaccessible art form in another language. Sit down for breakfast,
Stand up for farmers Robert Eggleston is passionate about Fairtrade, and as the Chair of Burgess Hill Fairtrade he is excited about the Fairtrade Fortnight from 22nd-30th April
“B
urgess Hill is proud to be a Fairtrade town,” says Robert Eggleston, Chair of Burgess Hill Fairtrade. “So proud in fact that we celebrate each year with a Fairtrade Festival. This year’s Festival is especially significant as it marks the town’s tenth year as a Fairtrade town. So guess what – we’re holding a week long party to celebrate our tenth anniversary!” “Not everything in Burgess Hill is Fairtrade,” Robert continues. “We’re part of Fairtrade’s campaign movement, a family of 600 Fairtrade towns across the UK, raising awareness of the work that Fairtrade does in developing countries and promoting the purchase of Fairtrade products. Fairtrade brings producers and consumers together because by changing our buying habits we transform the lives of producers in developing countries. Fairtrade helps producers build sustainable communities. Fairtrade ensures that producers of coffee, tea, bananas, sugar, cocoa and other products get a fairer price for their hard work and get a premium to re-invest in the communities (schools, health centres, investing in transport or skills, training nurses, doctors or teachers). The guaranteed Fairtrade price helps communities plan for a better future.”

S u ss e x L i v i n g April 2016
Each year the Fairtrade Foundation runs a Fairtrade Fortnight campaign. This year’s it is called: ‘Sit down for breakfast; Stand up for farmers’, highlighting that in many developing countries there are “thin months”. These are times when families can’t put a meal on the table because their harvest didn’t generate enough income. Through the guaranteed price Fairtrade helps to get rid of these thin For more months. “It means,” says Robert, “that information contact when we sit down to breakfast with Robert Eggleston our cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee we snowdropmusic know that the farmers who produced it can also sit down to their breakfast as @talktalk.net well.” Burgess Hill Fairtrade held a “Big 0794 779 2033 Brunch” at a local store in Burgess Hill. The Burgess Hill Fairtrade Festival starts on Friday 22nd April with The Big Session and runs until Saturday 30th April with a concert with the London Community Gospel Choir. Burgess Hill
Means Business On Friday 6th May Burgess Hill Means Business will be holding their annual exhibition, giving local businesses an opportunity to meet, greet, network and have fun If you ask people where the commercial hubs are in West Sussex, most would say Gatwick followed by Brighton. But Burgess Hill? It probably wouldn’t register on their radar. And yet here in leafy Mid Sussex you’ll find the offices of some of the biggest names in the business world alongside hundreds of small and medium-sized firms leading the way in fields as diverse as stem cell storage and digital technology. Eight years ago a member of the Burgess Hill Business Parks Association (BHBPA), whose members generate around £2bn for the local economy, expressed concern that not only did people not realise the scale of commercial activity in Burgess Hill, but even businesses working in the town weren’t aware of what other companies were offering. He suggested the Association stage an event to encourage them to come together and learn about each other, and the Burgess Hill Means Business exhibition was born. That first year more than proved the event’s worth; in just one example, a large engineering firm that had been in the town for decades and was purchasing widgets from Wales discovered another local business produced identical components at a

lower price – and they were only a matter of metres away from their production unit. Well, they say it pays to shop locally! The exhibition, taking place this year on 6th May and sponsored by Sussex Living Magazine, is special in many ways. Over the years, it has helped to generate a real sense of community among businesses in Burgess Hill and those on outlying estates. The
The atmosphere is relaxed and productive and the organisers try hard to make what could be a boring, suited affair both fun and informative atmosphere is relaxed and productive and the organisers try hard to make what could be a boring, suited affair both fun and informative – this year, a harpist will provide calming background music and a close-up magician will be working the exhibition! Last year’s visitor feedback was unanimous in its praise, describing the exhibition as friendly, personal, buzzy and busy.
A seasoned stand holder even went so far as to say it was “one of the best exhibitions I’ve attended” – not bad for a rural town not on most people’s business map. “We are proud of the strength and diversity of the business sector in the town,” says BHBPA chairman Paul Shearing. “But why not take this opportunity to come along and find out for yourself – network with the vibrant business community, witness some individual success stories and find out what makes business in Burgess Hill special.”
Burgess Hill Means Business Friday 6th May, 10.00am – 3.00pm The King’s Centre Mid Sussex, Victoria Road, Burgess Hill RH15 9LR Free entry on production of a business card.
