HISTORY

BY ROGER LINN

The Last

Stones Standing

Since 1070 Bramber Castle has stood commanding over the picturesque village of Bramber. Today, virtually the last standing stones are the steepling Gatehouse tower, seemingly defying the laws of gravity and the power of nature

The tiny village of Bramber, which lies on the river Adur just below Steyning, must be amongst the prettiest in England, let alone Sussex. Part of its charm is the way in which the eye is lead along its narrow street, past the old pub and the floral displays outside the chocolate-box houses, to the towering stone structure which stands guard over the western entrance to the village. Stretching tall above its surrounding trees the tower beckons like a spindly, stony fi nger and begs the same questions of everybody who sees it for the fi rst time – how old is the structure and how could it have survived for so long without being brought down by one of our winter storms? The tower is in fact virtually all that remains of Bramber Castle and it was built only a few short years after William the Conqueror landed at Hastings in 1066. It was constructed by William de Braose, one of the French knights who had accompanied and fought alongside the Conqueror. For administrative purposes, Sussex was divided into great swathes of

land called ‘Rapes’ and for his reward, de Braose was created Lord of the Rape of Bramber, situated neatly between the Rape of Arundel and the Rape of Lewes. He was fortunate, because his land straddled the fertile valley of the river Adur which, in those days was wider and deeper than it is today and included the busy commercial inland port of Steyning, which lay just to the north of Bramber. The hill at the end of the village was the perfect place to construct the defensive position de Braose required, with its commanding views of the surrounding countryside. In fact, before the Normans appeared on the scene, it may have been a Saxon hill fort. continued on page 8 St Nicholas Church

As a campaigning soldier, William would have been very familiar with the techniques of taking control of the local population and his first priority would have been to create a fort from which his troops could operate. This would have consisted of digging a deep defensive ditch around the hill, inside which would have been a wooden wall protecting the central high earthen mound and living quarters. Today, only the massive ditch remains, but it is beautifully preserved and worth exploring for its abundant flora and wildlife.

After the situation had been stabilised, the invaders, for that is what they were, began the construction of the permanent castle. They built it in what is known as the classic ‘motte and bailey’ style, where the Motte is the great mound in the centre of the castle and the Bailey is the open space which surrounds it. Finally to protect everything, they built a curtain wall of stone where the old wooden one had been. All this work was completed sometime around 1070 but of course, more and more complex structures were added as time went by, including the steepling Gatehouse tower which, at around 80 feet tall, still stands guard over the ruins today. Also still standing the test of time is the tiny parish church of St Nicholas, which was originally built in 1075 as the chapel for the castle, and is the oldest parish church in Sussex. Today, a visitor strolling around the site – now a popular picnic spot – can find great, anonymous lumps of ancient masonry, some of which represent all that is left of the original curtain wall. These are composed largely of the poor quality infill stone, the better quality dressing stone having long since been filched by the locals for building projects of their own.

8

The permanent castle was built in what is known as the classic ‘motte and bailey’ style Not much of Bramber Castle’s later history is known, save that the de Boase family remained in control for the next 250 years or so, except for a short period when they fell out with King John and he confiscated the castle. In those days, Kings could do that sort of thing. We know that much further destruction took place during a local fight over the castle during the civil war, when the Roundheads positioned a canon in the transepts of the little church and blasted away at the castle from there. This did not do either the castle or the church much good, but the Victorians effected restoration work to the chapel and for those who care to look, St Nicholas still has a very beautiful Norman arch in the chancel. Soaring over the little church, the gatehouse tower of Bramber Castle still stands after almost a thousand years and one must wonder whether or not it may stand for a further millennium. www.sussexliving.com

his father took him along to East Grinstead rugby club, where he played for three years. He pushed on at Worth School, where he developed into more of an all rounder, playing cricket, athletics and football as well. Thoughts of a career in professional sport started to form. “Just when I was starting to think my rugby career would peak at Bristol University, I got a call from the England sevens management, they invited me in and I haven’t looked back.” Despite sell out crowds and global TV coverage, as a sport, rugby

“Fiji and New Zealand have great pedigree in sevens rugby and will be taking strong teams to Rio. The South Africans have a good side too,” says Cuckfeldborn Great Britain rugby sevens captain Tom Mitchell, “but we have a very high calibre squad of athletes, great coaches and a plan to get to the podium and challenge for gold. It’s all about being able to perform on the day. And we gain huge confidence from our skills and preparation.” Once upon a time, sevens rugby was part of the preparation for the fi fteen-a-side game: useful for fitness work pre-season, plus a jolly at the end of the season. How times change. Now, hundreds of elite athletes compete in front of sell out crowds at 10 tournaments across the world. The life of a sevens player is one of regimented nutrition, long haul travel and long bursts of entertainingly high octane effort, usually under huge pressure. “It’s brilliant to travel the world with the sevens and experience so many different cultures. It’s pretty intense too,” says Mitchell. “So it’s great to come home and I still have lots of connections in Sussex where I grew up.” Indeed, Mitchell’s rugby career started in rather more familiar surroundings. Aged 8,

Anyone who has ever dreamed of playing for their country, of pulling on that shirt, of winning, can imagine how exciting it is for us players sevens has yet to fully break into the mainstream. Could the exposure afforded by the Olympics be that catalyst? “At the highest level, sevens players are incredible athletes, the sport is played at great speed and has quick scoring. It’s a wonderful spectacle. It is also very simple compared to many other sports. Anyone can pick up a ball with a few friends and start playing it,” explains Mitchell. And Great Britain’s chances of a Gold medal? Mitchell’s impeccably polite manner betrays steel and determination. “Anyone who has ever dreamed of playing for their country, of pulling on that shirt, of winning, can imagine how exciting and motivating it is for us players. And this is the Olympics, the greatest stage of all.” Tom Mitchell’s journey here started like those of so many 8 year olds, but Team GB are well and truly ready and prepared for their moment in the spotlight and we’ll be there to witness it. The men’s rugby sevens kicks off on Tuesday 9th August in Rio. (The women’s competition starts on 6th). www.sussexliving.com

My first impression upon walking into The Manor Clinic, which is like a beautiful boutique hotel set in a stunning Georgian building, was what a healing and caring environment I was in. I was greeted by manager Jane Willett, who has worked at the clinic since it opened over 9 years ago. You could tell Jane is very proud of the clinic and the team, many of whom have been there since the beginning and have invested a lot of themselves into making it not only a treatment centre of excellence, but creating the ‘Manor family’, as they fondly call themselves. I was welcomed by the friendly team, all of whom had the ability to instantly put you at ease and make you feel safe. This is an important factor for most people walking through the doors of the clinic, as they will no doubt be feeling very nervous; this is the first step to confronting their addiction and starting the recovery process. A small 15 bedded facility, The Manor Clinic only specialises in the treatment of addictions and differs from most facilities that are normally found within large hospital environments. Whilst maintaining a warm ambience, talking to the team made me realise the real importance of why people come here and the seriousness of helping someone whose life has reached a critical point. Many of the team understand this very well as they have been through

The Manor

Clinic

The Manor Clinic is a private addiction rehabilitation centre surrounded by a large walled garden, set in the middle of the Hampshire countryside, promoting peace, healing and care in a homely, safe environment treatment themselves, then gone on to train as therapists. Jane told me their knowledge and experience is invaluable, as they are able to relate to the real problems people face not only whilst going through the initial detox period, but when they leave to pick up the aftermath that their addiction has left behind. What makes The Manor Clinic unique is their ‘lifetime’ aftercare

service offered to anyone who completes the 28 day detox programme. This weekly service is attended by people from all over the country, and overseas, plus there is family group therapy every other Saturday. An ‘intervention’ service is also available for those who are worried about a loved one in denial, to help them confront their problems and see the importance of getting treatment. There is also a 24

hour helpline, which is a real lifeline for people when they leave the clinic. To most visitors The Manor Clinic has become a second home and family offering support with whatever challenge they are facing; some return every week, some every month, and some go for longer periods. Most use it extensively for the first year, then as they get stronger their frequency lessens, but all those in recovery know they can use it as much or as little as they need. Addictions can have such a negative impact on all aspects of a person’s life, so if you are ready to take back control and change your life forever then give The Manor Clinic a call. Some of their patients have said it literally saved their lives, which is a very powerful statement and one that really stayed with me.

On the 17-18th September help celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the railway coming to Haywards Heath and making it the vibrant town it is today

Train of

EVENTS In 1837 Haywards Heath consisted of two Inns, eight farmhouses, a windmill and nine cottages. Today, it is one of the largest towns in West Sussex with a population of around 25,000 and it’s all thanks to the London to Brighton Railway, which will be celebrating its 175th Anniversary this September with a funfi lled weekend of historical celebrations. The original plans for the line took the railway through Cuckfield, but after objections from local residents, a route was finally approved in 1837, which ran through the area now known as Haywards Heath. “It was a brave

14

SUSSEX LIVING August 2016

decision,” explains local historian, Philip Ladd (pictured). “At the time Haywards Heath didn’t exist, but there was a belief that a railway would have a dramatic effect on settlement patterns and history has shown that to be true.” The line from London to Brighton was completed in July 1841, with the southern section built by railway contractor Joseph Flesher, who was responsible for Folly Hill Tunnel just south of the station. His great granddaughter, Gwyneth and great great granddaughter, Sue, tell me that Joseph’s signature is somewhere in the

tunnel but despite years of travelling through it, neither has been able to spot it to date. “I’m thrilled that Joseph’s work has had such an impact,” Gwyneth tells me, also mentioning that the spoil from the railway cutting was used to create the mound in Victoria Park. Once the line was fully opened on 21st September 1841, both residential and commercial development flourished on either side of the new station, which was known as Haywards Heath and Cuckfield and by 1887, Haywards Heath finally earned its description as a town. The electrification of the railway in the early 1930s, led to further growth, a trend which remains ongoing. To celebrate 175 years of the railway, the town is planning a weekend of Victorian themed celebrations on1718th September. Victoria Park will host a number of events, including a screening of The Railway Children, a Victorian rugby match, a display by Sussex Yeomanry, a Victorian

wheelbarrow race and the park will also be the final destination of a Grand Victorian Procession. The station forecourt will be transformed with stalls, a visit from Bluebell’s steam engine Stepney, an unveiling of a series of commemorative mosaics made by local schools and the Twinning Association and there will be the opportunity to ride a diesel train between Haywards Heath and Ardingly, a stretch of track rarely used. Added to this, Haywards Heath Horticultural Society, which is also celebrating its 125th Anniversary are creating a spectacular flower display of a railway carriage from 1891 on the roundabout at Commercial Square, masterminded by Sylvia Harris and the Dolphin Leisure Centre will have a model railway exhibition. Tim Briggs and Ruth de Mierre have been hugely instrumental in creating such an entertaining and action packed weekend and they would also like to extend huge thanks to all the local businesses, railway companies and organisations for their support. Super Saturday culminates in a 1980s party night at the Village Centre. There will be a free art exhibition in Holy Trinity Church, Battle of the Somme Centenary, and a screening in Hurst Library of UNESCO listed fi lm The Battle of the Somme, first shot and shown

Forest Row Festival

Friday 23rd-Sunday 25th September Each year towards the end of September, the village of Forest Row gets taken over for a weekend of live music, food, drink, craft and frolicking. It’s centred on the Village Green, but many shops, cafes and bars in the village tend to join in too, producing a remarkable weekend-long festival atmosphere. Organised by local volunteers, the festival is not a commercial event, just a lively gathering and celebration of how great it

is to live round here. The festival tries to make as much as possible free of charge, through grants and especially a village crowdfunding (this has not extended to the food and bar though!). A big event for the village and surrounding area, but open to anyone who wants to join in. Very family friendly, also with bands and bar performing until midnight.

Pete’s epic 1,000 mile bike ride I am 57 years old and at the end of August I will be cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats in aid of the Sussex Multiple Sclerosis Centre. This centre has supported my wife, Judith, since 2003 when she was diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS. Since retiring after a 30 year career in the police force, I now care for my wife in addition to volunteering at the centre. The people I have met

through the MS Centre have made me feel very humble about how lucky I am to have my fitness. I really admire how they deal with their adversities in life and this has really spurred me on whilst I have been training. I have signed up with Discover Adventure and am looking to complete the challenge in just 12 days from August 30th, cycling just under 1000 miles in the hope of raising as much money as possible. Kind regards, Pete. Pete can be sponsored at: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ peterbaker14 The Sussex MS Centre, which is a self-funding Charity, is looking for people to participate in a sponsored walk along the Adur or a sponsored abseil in September to raise funds for the Centre. Please call 01273 594484 or email info@mssussex.com for more details.

The Haywards Heath Society Founded in 1973 in response to a threat to the Heath, an area above the cricket pitch being the largest remaining area of the heathland which gave the town its name, the Society’s aim is to monitor and comment on proposed developments and changes to Haywards Heath. The Society combines this function with members’ meetings and outings together with hosting debates and lectures, open to members and the general public. As a result of initiatives by the Society, Haywards Heath Town Council was formed to represent local views. The Society also talks to local groups and runs stalls at various events such as Town Day and the Spring Festival, answering questions about the area and its ecology. The Haywards Heath Town Walk is a useful Society production which helps give an understanding of Haywards Heath as it is and was, including maps and a guide to points of interest.

George’s Millennium Garden A splendid feature of the Millennium Garden in Hurstpierpoint is a large Monterey Pine. As its name suggests this tree is endemic on the west coast of California particularly around the coastal town of Monterey, made famous by being the setting for John Steinbeck’s novel ‘Cannery Row’. This particular tree is some 150 years old and features in an old photo from the 1890s when it was in the garden of the house of the Hannington family, owners of the department store of that name that was in Brighton. Sadly this iconic and much loved tree has reached the end of its days, and following a detailed report from an Arborologist the Management Committee has had to decide to have it felled. This work will be carried out during the first week of August

Mark Hardy at the High Weald Dairy in East Sussex. This cheese is made just 20 metres from where the cows are milked and is suitable for vegetarians as the dairy only uses vegetable rennet. I couldn’t resist a sample of full flavoured Stinking Bishop, eaten with rind, then some Rosary Goat cheese, made in the New Forest with local milk by Chris and Clare Moody. An interesting looking cheese is the Cornish Yarg, wrapped in stinging nettles foraged from the farm while a Dorset Red is a sweet cheese, smoked over oak for a smooth, velvety taste. The Gorwydd Caerphilly is a traditionally crumbly, lemony cheese with a slate grey, rustic rind, historically eaten by miners.

A Taste of Sussex Visit the beautiful timber framed South Downs Heritage Centre and discover a world of arts, crafts and fine locally produced food and drink, including The Cheese Monger Paul Heasman Who better to introduce you to the best cheeses Sussex has to offer than World Cheese Award judge Paul Heasman? I visited Paul at The Sussex Food Hall in the wonderful oak beamed and light filled South Downs Heritage Centre in Hassocks. Paul knows all the cheese producers personally and after spending 30 years in the business, there is little he doesn’t know about the food product that 99% of households presently enjoy. Paul currently offers 35 artisan local and British cheeses, all produced by hand and he introduced me to a selection after explaining how peoples’ taste buds are as individual as finger prints. I tried the utterly delicious Winterdale Shaw, a nutty Kentish Cheddar, matured for 8-10 months in a chalk cave, allowing it to develop a beautiful rind and flavour. Handmade in a traditional vat by Carla and

Robin Betts, whose family have been farming in Kent for over 500 years, this cheese has a long tangy flavour with sweet notes. Next, I sampled some Sussex Brie, with a delightful taste that accumulates due to the rind (apparently much of the flavour is in the rind and Paul recommends putting hard rinds in stocks and soups too). Sussex Camembert was next; similar looking to the Brie but with a sweeter taste. Then came a Blue Shropshire from the Cropwell Bishop dairy, which has just won Supreme Champion at the British Cheese Awards. It isn’t difficult to see why; it has a delicious tangy piquancy, melting in the mouth with saltiness at the end. Sister Sarah is a mild, semisoft cheese made by Sarah and

Paul knows all the cheese producers personally and currently offers 35 artisan local and British cheeses, all produced by hand

With a selection as wide and flavoursome as this you’ll be pleased to discover that Paul offers cheese tastings every day and he will be bringing in seasonal and guest cheeses to sample. Should you wish to learn more, he hosts regular talks to explain why we should be championing these handmade cheeses; go along and meet the man who is forging focus and passion towards our delicious local cheeses.

Alfresco

BY LISA DE SILVA

HOME & GARDEN

LIVING

This is the season to live the alfresco life – from kicking back in the summerhouse, spending a romantic night in a shepherd’s hut or gathering around the BBQ in an all-weather cabin, viva la vida!

Igor Marx/Shutterstock.com

It is now a proven fact that spending time outdoors is good for our physical and emotional wellbeing. Mother Nature in all her glory provides a real treat for our senses, making us calmer and more creative. So, it’s no surprise that alfresco living is a hugely popular and growing trend. Al Fresco literally means ‘in the fresh air’ and with the variety of both permanent and temporary structures available for outdoor living, it seems us Brits can’t get enough of a chance to extend our living space outside. The benefits are extensive, from adding an extra room to your home without the disruption and cost of an extension, to creating a space where you can enjoy the garden in all weather. Here’s our guide to some of the options, both permanent and temporary, on offer.

28

SUMMERHOUSES

The summerhouse has a long history; for the ancient Chinese Mandarins it was a place to retreat and rejuvenate, for the Japanese it was a place to take tea and for the English it has been a place to enjoy the serenity of the garden. Today, the summerhouse is still part of the

English tradition, but it’s uses are expanding as space becomes ever more a premium and the costs of moving or extending, become ever more expensive. This means that in addition to being a haven in the garden where you can retreat and relax, a summerhouse can now act as a home office, guest accommodation, a teenage hangout, a home gym, a children’s playroom or a hobby and games room. What’s more, a summerhouse offers infi nite flexibility in terms of both size and shape and is a cost effective way to make the most of your plot. Many are built to accommodate lighting, telecommunications and heating to ensure they can be used all year round. Clearly, the decoration of your summerhouse will depend on its use, but it may offer you a chance to contrast with the decor in the main house. For example, you could go for a minimal contemporary style office to complement a Victorian house, or a chintzy floral style retreat to complement your garden.

BBQ HUTS

If you love barbecuing but get put off by the inclement British weather, a BBQ Hut might just solve all your problems. The BBQ continued on page 30 SUSSEX LIVING August 2016

During the late 19th century, the shepherd’s hut was introduced to allow shepherds to live out in the fields for extended periods of time and so doubled up as a kitchen, dining room, bedroom, sitting room and storeroom. There would be a corner stove for warmth and windows on either side, so the shepherd could watch his flock. A hinged stable door allowed him to hear his flock and the strong cast iron wheels enabled the hut to be moved to different locations when necessary. Today, shepherd’s huts, often built by traditional craftsmen, make a romantic alternative to more conventional al fresco structures and blend

Keep your garden and the refuse collectors happy by creating your own compost heap – layer up your green and brown waste material for the perfect nitrogen and carbon rich heap There’s something very satisfying about recycling all your food waste instead of flinging it into the kitchen bin where it lies, wasted and unused before being sent to landfill. Not only will you have a continuous free supply of top quality compost but worms, woodlice, toads and slow worms will benefit from your decision to turn waste into nutrient rich material for your garden. I’m constantly surprised at the rate at which worms will break down food and garden waste; lifting the lid of our large composter reveals hundreds busily turning our teabags, fruit skins and discarded cores and stems into rich, useable plant food. You can buy a large plastic drum composter with a lid and door from any garden centre but a satisfying alternative is to source four pallets and nail three into an open sided square and tie the other on the fourth side to act as a removable door. The

advantage of using a pallet is that wildlife can clamber in and out and compost is easier to remove once it’s ready to nourish your garden. The secret to good compost is to alternate green, nitrogen rich material and brown carbon rich material in thin layers. The green layer includes uncooked vegetable peelings and grass clippings while the brown layer includes sticks, dry grass, wood chippings and shredded paper. The second secret is to shred the material thinly as this makes it quicker to rot; once this happens, the temperature builds up, killing any weed seeds. If using an open compost heap, don’t include meat, dairy or cooked food as these may encourage rats. The heap needs to be kept moist but not sodden, so if it’s dry, you can water it and putting an old piece of carpet on top keeps in heat

and moisture. A lidded, plastic container doesn’t need to keep to these rules as the worms do their work and the heap inside remains warm, moist and rat free. Its not a good idea to turn the contents in an open compost heap as you run the risk of spiking slow worms, toads or even a hedgehog with your garden fork; the material will be ready to spread on the garden within a year without any disturbance. If you open the lid or pull back the carpet on your compost heap you’ll notice centipedes, numerous woodlice, leaping springtails and hordes of worms. It’s good to discover that 60% of household waste is organic and can be returned to the soil to enrich plants with the added benefit of keeping valuable food waste out of landfill and back where it belongs, in the garden. www.rspb.org.uk www.sussexliving.com

GARDENING

BY FLO WHITAKER

Time to

CU T BACK It may be high summer, but it’s time to cut back, clear up and harvest your veg. Why not follow Flo’s culinary footsteps for a fresh and delicious garden dinner? August means different things to different people. For many folk it’s most defi nitely high summer; the traditional holiday season. However, if you’re a farmer, then August signals the end of the growing year. I hate to mention it, but the nights are drawing in. You don’t have to be in charge of 100’s of acres to notice the turning of the seasons. Even if you only have a handkerchief-size plot, this is the time for clearing, tidying and harvesting. Many summer-flowering shrubs will have fi nished blooming now and can be gently pruned back. Trim lavenders with a very light touch; just enough to shear off the spent flower stems. If you cut too far into old growth, they’ll refuse to perform next year. However, neglected shrubs that have outgrown their positions can have entire stems removed at the base. Such hard pruning will weaken the plant so the process should be staggered over two, possibly three years. Never remove more than a third of offending branches at any one time – be patient and use those secateurs cautiously. Other characters, such as rambling roses, require fi rm treatment and can be reduced by half if necessary. Can’t fi nd the front door? You’re probably in an abusive relationship with your wisteria. Grab the pruning shears and break free! Your postman will thank you for it. On the veg patch, most strawberry plants will have

36

SUSSEX LIVING August 2016

fi nished fruiting and will be making ‘runners’; vigorous little offspring on long stems that will take root wherever they touch the ground. These can be cut away from the parent plant, transplanted into gaps, or potted up and given away. Pick your crops as soon as they’re ready. Don’t casually think, “Oh, I’ll leave it another day … or two …” otherwise vegetables quickly become tough and salads turn bitter as they run to seed. Unless you’re determined to grow the Largest Marrow in the World, (and you’ve left it far too late for this year), it’s better to pick produce when it’s small and tender. Regular harvesting will also encourage plants to produce more. I often make an ‘Allotment Omelette’ by boiling and dicing a couple of new potatoes, then throwing them into a frying pan with some olive oil, a few French beans and peas, a chopped

Can’t find the front door? You’re probably in an abusive relationship with your wisteria shallot or salad onion, a couple of beaten eggs, and a sprinkling of cheese. The ingredients and quantities vary according to availability, so you can never make the same thing twice, but it’s a useful dish for using up small amounts of this or that. Eaten outside on a balmy evening, (remember those?) it’s a meal that looks good and, if the ingredients were only picked half an hour previously, will surely do you good. www.sussexliving.com

Are you thinking of investing in a buy-to-let property? Read on for Linda Nightingale’s guide to the market Buy-to-let has been a highly popular and worthwhile investment over recent years with tax breaks making it an excellent platform for regular income and capital growth. It has also enabled individuals to purchase a property with a mortgage, knowing that in essence the rental income will pay off the loan, whilst the value of the property has risen year on year. However tax changes will be coming into force which will reduce the tax relief on mortgage interest for private landlords. This change will be both to double the annual tax bill for higher rate taxpayers and result in more investment homeowners being out of the basic tax rate bracket. Phased in over four years the new regulations will commence in the 2017-18 tax year when 25% of finance costs will be subject to the new rules, rising to 75% in 2019-20. New buyers taking out a mortgage to secure a rentable property should therefore seek advice as a high level of borrowing may result in difficulties in securing a net income profit. If you are buying the property with cash then you should be able to look forward to regular income and capital growth but note

Is buy to let still a sound

INVESTMENT? that there is now 3% (lowest) Stamp Duty payable for second homes.

SOUTH EAST PROPERTY PRICE RISES

Properties in the South East tend to increase in value year

on year which is good news for your capital investment. There is also a high demand from those seeking to let, so this should ensure that there are few void periods. Buy-to-let is therefore a viable proposition,

particularly if you are a cash buyer perhaps taking advantage of access to pension funds, but a thorough understanding of the costs involved and the returns expected need to be carefully considered.

➊ Pointers when considering becoming a landlord 1. Property values in the south east tend to rise year on year (but as with most investments there are no guarantees) 2. There is a vibrant letting market in the Home Counties. 3. Purchase a property which is easily rentable i.e. has good transport facilities, shops and entertainment nearby. 4. Ensure that your investment is structurally sound. 5. Consider using the services of a

38

S u ss e x L i v i n g August 2016

Letting Agent. 6. Remember that there could be additional outgoings throughout the year such as the need to employ a plumber/ replace a washing machine and property maintenance. 7. Be fully aware of the safety regulations and your liabilities as a landlord. 8. Do not get distracted when viewing a potential property for Buy-to-let. What suits you personally might not be ideal for

letting. You need easy to decorate rooms, a property in good condition throughout and white goods which work! 9. Consider the size of your investment. Look at the different returns you can achieve between a house and an apartment and whether two, one bedroom flats is a better investment than say, one large property. Factor in the rise in potential capital growth and the stamp duty payable when you come to sell.

East Clayton FARM What do donkeys, the South Downs and a care farm have in common? The answer can be found at East Clayton Farm in Washington, which provides health, social and educational care services for vulnerable, disabled and marginalised young people SUSSEX LIVING August 2016

43

It felt like I was in a scene from a vintage spaghetti western – I half expected Clint Eastwood to amble over the distant horizon, chewing a cigar and wearing a dusty poncho. The South Downs is perhaps not the place you’d expect to see four donkeys out on a walk but they are part of an innovative programme designed to help disabled and marginalised young people in West Sussex. The home of these donkeys is East Clayton Farm in Washington, which The Lorica Trust Charity leased from the National Trust 11 years ago and transformed it into a registered care farm with an ambitious vision to become a productive, thriving community. Care farms provide health, social or educational care services for vulnerable individuals, providing supervised and structured farming related activities. At East Clayton Farm the donkeys are a recent acquisition; their purpose is to provide residents and visitors from other charities with the unique experience of walking with them on the farm and

surrounding lanes. In the future, it is intended that the donkeys will be further engaged to carry packs for walkers on the South Downs Way which will help to raise much needed funds for the charity. Development Manager Jean Rolfe took me to meet the donkeys. They were waiting inside their large open stable set within their paddock, allowing them the choice of grazing or resting under shelter. Two sets of two brothers make up the little herd; pale brown Darren is the bossiest while his brother John is calmer and more laid back. And patchy grey coloured, curious Bobbin is brother to the cheeky, smaller, brown Bramble; all four of them are impossible to resist.

People instantly reach out to stroke them and their long ears always seem to be asking for a friendly scratch. We put on their headcollars and led them from the yard, one person per donkey. Donkeys have been long famed for their stubbornness but these four could not have been more enthusiastic. They walked briskly beside us, occasionally stopping to nibble a particularly tempting leaf. I could quickly see the appeal of walking beside them; smaller and easier to manage than a horse and taller than the largest dog, they seem to fit perfectly with a human stride and height, making them the perfect strolling companion. They can carry provisions, hence their appeal to long distance walkers and can safely be tethered outside a pub, which will be ideal for thirsty trekkers. These donkeys all came from a family run business in Guildford. The fact that they’ve always known one another and are middle aged makes them the ideal temperament for interacting with vulnerable people. Those

who have been marginalised often feel they are not valued and donkeys, which are perceived as being ‘beasts of burden’, seem to have a natural affinity for improving their confidence and self image. The ethos of self value is central to the work at East Clayton Farm; it informs all their plans for the future and has already manifested the first phase of the farm’s evolution.

into society. The foundations are now in place to really make the farm fulfi l its primary function in creating a space where people are valued and fi nd a productive role, which in turn increases their self esteem. The 120 acres of farmland is presently being grazed and will gradually be utilised for food production, conservation and outdoor activity in addition to the donkey walking. Volunteers will soon be needed to help sow wildflower seed to provide essential habitat for pollinators and small mammals that would benefit from the shelter of long grass and the insects who feed there. The second phase of development has at its heart the ambition to allow groups, other charities and visitors the opportunity to enjoy the facilities of the farm. A dilapidated building called Little George’s Barn is to be converted into a learning area, welcome room and disabled washroom so that groups from charities and schools can benefit from the farm. Fundraising for this phase is still ongoing but substantial sums were raised by the valiant efforts of Chairman Robin

46

SUSSEX LIVING August 2016

Hobson who ran the London Marathon last year in a pair of orange Wellingtons! Due to an administrative glitch, the London Marathon altered Robin’s charity place to the following year but as he figured he’d be “too old and tired” by then, he decided to run it a day early, starting at 5am and fi nishing in time for elevenses in Greenwich. Robin completed the arduous run, raising almost £60,000 and this year, Ben Jones, a friend of the farm, ran this year’s marathon to help raise funds for the donkeys. Jose Sayers, another friend and fundraiser will swim the Serpentine to help fund the donkeys and other farm projects.

Chairman Robin Hobson ran the London Marathon last year in a pair of red Wellingtons and raised almost £60,000 East Clayton Farm relies on volunteers to succeed in its invaluable work with supporting and raising the esteem of vulnerable people; some commit regular hours each week while others join volunteer teams when commitments allow. They are always actively seeking volunteers and those who decide to help can be certain that their efforts make a monumental difference to those who benefit from the farm. Communal garden areas need maintaining, seed needs sowing while chickens, lambs and donkeys all need looking after. Buildings require construction and maintenance as do fences, hedges and farmland. Fundraisers are always required at agricultural shows and farmers’ markets and there is always administrative work to be done in the office. animals as there have been groundbreaking studies showing that close connection with animals is incredibly rewarding and empowering for those who have spent their lives being undervalued and ignored. Interaction with donkeys has been found to increase a sense of achievement, confidence, motor skills and self esteem. The donkeys benefit too; they seem to appreciate the warmth and affection from vulnerable people so the therapy works both ways! Disabled children seem to adore donkeys as they are perhaps less intimidating than horses and their long fur and ears give them a cuteness factor, which is impossible to ignore. The donkeys are an important step because they give people a fundamental connection to an animal they can care for and accompany on walks. Donkeys are very calming to be around and seem, like horses, to instinctively know when people are vulnerable and they adjust to an individual’s needs. They do however differ fundamentally from horses in their metabolism, behaviour and nervous system and for this reason, volunteer donkey carers receive training from The Donkey Sanctuary, who have spent years pioneering research into every aspect of this engaging, often misunderstood animal. In the future the farm seeks to engage other therapeutic

moving with the donkeys. Donkeys, like other equines are intuitive and empathic animals, mirroring back and reacting to our inner feelings in the same way a therapist would do. They live in the moment which is ideal for humans, who tend to become lost in the past or future. Being with a donkey, during grooming, walking, or just being in their presence is a powerful way to focus, which in itself is a useful tool for being more effective in life. It can teach the youngster with attention issues or poor self esteem that the donkey responds to them, which in turn teaches them to give themselves the attention they need to blossom. Donkeys apparently respond to praise more strongly than horses which is another bonus for young people who have never learned to praise themselves as they can see the benefits on the donkeys, which in turn enables them to feel more self worth. The eventual aim of the farm is to provide facilities so that other charities can co-create ideas to benefit their own organisations.

It’s an ambitious target but one that is slowly happening and gaining momentum with every person helped. Living or working on the farm is an experience that will have profound and life changing effects; eventually, young people will be able to gain practical qualifications in conservation, agriculture and horticulture which are all skills they will learn by doing rather than simply being taught. If the donkeys can be trained to pull a plough, youngsters can work with them to produce food, surely the greatest test of independence. Volunteers can work alongside young people in educational training, giving them a cushioning introduction to the realities of the workplace while boosting their confidence and levels of self esteem. Back at the farm after our donkey walking session, the donkeys had their hooves picked, their coats groomed and generally made a fuss of; they seem to revel in attention and gathered round rather than wandering off which is what horses tend to do after

The farm’s outbuildings have been converted into Bradbury Court, eight independent living units for profoundly disabled young adults they are put back in their field. As we left them, one began to bray, gaining volume with every breath. “He always does that when we leave,” said Jean and it was easy to see how these animals work their way into the hearts of their human companions. Darren, John, Bramble and Bobbin slowly took themselves off to graze, blissfully unaware of how important they will be to the people who will interact with them. Their new role as hoofed therapists has only just begun and they will continue to play an essential role in the rehabilitation of vulnerable young people across Sussex. Ditchling

Walk

A lovely circular walk around the picturesque village of Ditching, enjoy the beautiful countryside on a warm summer’s day This circular walk starts and finishes at the car park behind the Village Hall just to the east of the crossroads in the centre of Ditchling. It explores the Low Weald area immediately to the north of the Downs and links the three churches of Ditchling, Westmeston and Streat. There are no hills and it is suitable for most people, although it can be muddy in places, particularly during the winter months! The walk is 4.6 miles long and you should allow just over two hours to complete the circuit. From the car park, walk up to the road and turn right towards Lewes. Take the signed footpath opposite ‘The Fieldway’, which leads to a grassy path, giving access into a field. Cross three fields on a stiled path, then follow up alongside a sunken path (The Nye) to emerge over a stile into a wooded area. (The stiles have been made and erected by the ‘Monday Group’, volunteer workers who carry out clearance and maintenance work.) Go ahead through the woodland, ignoring a right-hand fork, and just past the pond, bear left on a way-marked path (Wellcroft Lane). This takes you out on Underhill Lane, where you should turn left and follow the lane out to its junction with the B2116 opposite Westmeston Church. A previous owner of the house ‘Middleton Laine’

50

on your right, was Sir Stephen Demetriadi, one time High Sheriff of Sussex, who gave land at Ditchling Beacon to the National Trust in memory of his son shot down in wartime action. From the road junction, walk parallel to the B2116 on the ‘Westmeston 2002 Jubilee Pathway’ and just before the brow of the hill, look for a signed footpath on the opposite side of the road. Cross the road and veer half right across the field that leads to a stile and an enclosed section of path. The imposing house to your left is Westmeston Place. This path takes you out to a track where you should turn left for approximately 50 yards, and then turn right on another short section of enclosed path. On reaching the next track, turn left and follow this track northwards for half a mile to a signed junction of cross paths. The large house over to your right is ‘Middleton Manor’. During the last war, the house was occupied by German Officer POWs and they were known to visit nearby Ditchling to partake of afternoon tea. It is now a private residence. At the second cross path, go right over a stile, then left alongside an electric fence with the spire of Streat Church clearly visible. At the second stile, go right over a sleeper bridge on a defined path, bearing left on a wide track. Look for two electricity posts and aim for the gap on the left, which gives access to a metal kissing gate leading into a field. Bear half right across this field to another stile, and then walk uphill on a path to enter the graveyard at Streat Church via another kissing gate. It is worth turning right on the track by the Church for a short distance to admire the magnificently restored Streat Place. This ‘E’ shaped mansion has a monumental facade which probably belongs to the Jacobean era. Turn left along the track and just past Streat www.sussexliving.com

Cottage, go left over a stile and head downhill to another stile just to the left of the buildings at Hayleigh Farm. From the farm, follow the metalled track for just under a mile to Spatham Lane. Cross the lane and take the enclosed path opposite, which leads to Ditchling Recreation Ground and eventually out to East End Lane. Cross the lane and take the path opposite beside the delightfully named property ‘Pardons’. Pass through two kissing gates this leads into Fieldway, which in turn, joins the B2116, where you turn right for the car park and the centre of Ditchling. Please note this walk is a repeat, kindly re-walked and checked by the Ramblers for Les who is recovering from a walking accident. We wish him well for a speedy recovery. We are very grateful to Les Campbell for bringing us new and exciting local walks every month. A founder member and former Chairman of the Mid Sussex Ramblers, he is a very experienced and enthusiastic walker indeed. Les insists on testing all routes personally, making sure they are suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. If you would like to send your feedback about a local walk, please email editorial@sussexliving.com

Jump feet fi rst into the summer shoe trends this August, from block heels to flatforms, gladiator sandals to slippers, you are guaranteed to fi nd your perfect pair If you’re a shoe girl like I am, then this summer will be an exciting time for you. The sheer variety of footwear that you can choose from is not only fun but slightly overwhelming. So if you haven’t yet indulged in at least a couple of new pairs, now is the time. Whether they’re new sandals for a holiday or practical transitional summer-to-autumn styles that will see you through the next couple of months, it doesn’t matter: there are shoes for all kinds of weather and activities up for grabs. Just remember, no heel is too high and no décor is too loud! Block heels are not only super on-trend at the moment but they’re also incredibly comfortable – for a great summer look search for a pair of block heel peep-toe shoes. Mules are the perfect summer staple shoe that can be worn both day and night and are just right for easily slipping out of to enjoy the best of summer activities, such as strolling bare foot along a sandy beach. The flatform (a platform shoe with a flat sole) has remained an important shape this summer and is a must-have as it offers height without the discomfort. This August grab yourself a pair of intricately decorated flatform sandals or boots – plenty of pompoms, beading or ribbons should do the trick. Gladiator sandals are also still dominating the footwear scene. To

brighten up your day choose a pair of glittering, colourful ones and match them with your favourite sunglasses for a day of warm weather fun. If you prefer to add a little height, lace up heels are the accessory to wear to an August wedding or to snazz up a simple dress. Slippers and loafers fall in perfectly with the sleepwear-as-outdoor wear trend. These sassy shoes are ideal for a season that likes to emphasise anything colourful, textured and layered, so be sure to choose a pair that are bold and brazen. Anything from woven checkerboard patterns to pink lace is a winner.

Lace up heels are the accessory to wear to an August wedding or to snazz up a simple dress Surprisingly, footwear made out of Perspex or Lucite is becoming increasingly popular. Dubbed as the “nothing shoe”, this minimalist footwear trend is available in a huge variety of styles from open-toe mules to trainers. These clear shoes are not only fun but are great for drawing the attention away from your feet and focusing it on your outfit instead. So now you’re equipped with all the summer shoe knowledge you could possibly need, come rain or shine, you are guaranteed to have happy and incredibly fashion-forward feet. Focus on your feet this month and make sure to show them off whenever you get the chance, because before you know it they will be back in hiding in boots and wellies! SUSSEX LIVING August 2016

Paul Cassidy BDS, DPDS Implant Surgeon

Andrew says, “ Dental implants have been a saviour for those patients with uncomfortable dentures and others that have lost teeth and are unable to chew properly. Modern materials are far more natural looking and numbing techniques virtually pain free. Paul has been a valuable addition both to the team here at Oakmead and also to the local community. Patients no longer have to travel to implant clinics further afield because we also accept referrals from other local surgeries. His surgical expertise at Oakmead has also meant patients don’t have to join long waiting lists for wisdom tooth removal and other surgical procedures.” Paul qualified from Queen’s University Belfast, and completed Postgraduate training in Oral Surgery and Sedation at The University of Bristol. He has worked in practices specializing in Implantology and Oral Surgery for 15 years, and has received training from leaders in Dental Implantology and bone-grafting. Implant treatments offered by Paul range from the replacement of a single missing tooth right through to fixed alternatives for denture wearers. On a more personal level, he is a keen musician and has played guitar in a number of bands, although it appears his music career is destined to remain purely

Grab hold of the slip dress craze while the sun is still shining, and as it cools into autumn layer up for an on-trend take on the look The well-known lingerie-like slip dress fi rst became popular in the late 90s as part of the ‘underwear-as-outerwear’ trend. These sophisticated yet sexy garments were typically made from layered chiffon, polyester satins and charmeuse and some were even trimmed with lace – adding an extra nightgown appeal to the dress. Though looking like an undergarment was the aim, the slip dress was meant for street wear and by using these materials little was left to the imagination as to what lay underneath. It’s really no surprise then that

the slip dress was the centre of many a memorable outfit choice in fi lms, TV shows and red carpet appearances of the 90s. Though today’s slip dress is looking slinkier and sexier than ever, and pays homage to its 90s big sister through the use of satin and see-through chiffon, this season’s much coveted look is actually layering the slip dress over a T-shirt or on a chillier evening, over a thin, long-sleeved T-shirt. It’s easy to recreate a 90s nostalgic look wearing a slip dress but the added garments will help to make you feel less exposed. And while the 90s would have demanded such an outfit to be paired with a dainty pair of heels, you now have the liberty to choose from any style of footwear you feel most comfortable in – whether that is trainers or some chunky flatform sandals! www.sussexliving.com

flexibility, mobility, range of motion and posture – all the things that can make life easier. You are aiming to build muscle mass – something that deteriorates as we age. So, here are two exercises, which if done regularly can help to banish those bingo wings and gain that all-important upper arm strength as a result. PRESS UPS

Bingo wings – be gone! Body Buzz Let’s be honest, most of us could do

with an upper arm tone up, but help is here! Ban the bingo wings and gain arm confidence this summer Summer with its abundance of shortsleeved tops and sleeveless clothing in the shops, means it’s time to expose those upper arms to the elements… and the general public. Whether you find yourself at a social event or off for a dip in the sea or swimming pool on your holidays, your upper arms will almost definitely be on display at some point during the summer. But are they fit for purpose? I’m not just talking aesthetically here (which is a nice side effect) but physically too? Let’s start with the dreaded ‘bingo wings’ - the loose folds of fat on the underside of the arms, which so often put people off wearing garments that will reveal them. But who wants to hide their

58

S u ss e x L i v i n g August 2016

light under a sartorial bushel and restrict themselves this summer? From a physiological perspective, better upper body and arm strength is important especially as you get older,

From a physiological perspective, better upper body and arm strength is important especially as you get older because it affects your ability to do everyday activities such as reaching, pulling and lifting. Maintaining your strength up top can help to improve your

Place your hands palm down on the floor and underneath your shoulders, ensuring they are flat and your fingers are facing directly forwards. Your legs, back and hips should be aligned to form a straight line from head to toe. Slowly lower your body by bending your elbows out to the side until your chest is about two inches from the floor. Hold for the count of two and then repeat 10 times. For an easier version, do your press-ups with your knees on the floor. ARM CIRCLES

Targeting your biceps, triceps and shoulders, this exercise works best if you keep your abdominal muscles pulled in and tight. Start by standing with your back straight and your feet firmly and flat on the ground. Extend your arms out to the side so they are at a 90-degree angle to your body and begin to move them in small, fast circles forward. Do as many rotations as you can and then reverse the movement, doing as many circles as you can in the opposite direction. Take a short break to recover and repeat twice more. Before undertaking any of the above, always do a 5-minute warm up first with some gentle stretching in that area. When it comes to your arms, exercise is extremely effective and the muscles in the upper arm area respond fairly quickly to resistance exercise. However throwing some fat-burning cardio movement into the mix is also imperative as well as eating a good, healthy diet. Be a bingo winner! Caution: If you are unsure of any new exercise regime please consult your GP before commencing.

Let’s Eat...

Chicken Spezzatino We have a lot of Italian influence in our cooking and this Spezzatino is one of them. On a recent visit to our family in Italy we learned much more about their food and flavours, and this dish has been a staple ever since. You can use any meat, however I like to use either chicken or lamb, and it’s a great dish to use any vegetables you have to hand.

Chicken Spezzatino

8 pieces of chicken, thighs or legs
2 medium onions, chopped 2 red peppers, roughly chopped

2 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped
6 medium potatoes, peeled and quartered

 3-4 pints of chicken stock
 3 tbsp tomato puree
Handful of flat leafed parsley, roughly chopped 2 whole peperoncino (red chilli)
 Olive oil
1 tsp herbes de provence 1. On a medium to high heat, place the chicken in a frying pan and rub over herbes de provence with a little oil and salt and pepper. Fry until golden on both sides, leave to one side to cool slightly then remove the skin (if you wish).

On the 27th August it’s National Burger Day. Why an industry that sells around a gazillion units a year needs it’s own day devoted to motivating us to eat even more is beyond me. But, weather permitting I will be firing up the BBQ and gleefully joining in the celebration. Most claims to the creation of the hamburger emanated from the back end of the 19th Century. Deep down I do hope the hamburger emerged from Hamburg. Hamburg was founded as a port and had been part of the Hanseatic League. Trade was how the city made its money and I suspect the Hamburg Steak (a cooked minced beef patty served on a plate) evolved into the hamburger, and the concept caught on before being exported around the world. If that’s not the case then I doubt the provenance of

the sandwich and suspect it might have been the Earl of Jersey who first slapped some meat between two slices of bread; so he could carry on playing cards in preference to sitting down and dining more formally. These days the humble hamburger has many different forms, be it globalised fast food, a microwaveable mystery or a vegetarian bean feast. It can be served as a designer rustic art-house gourmet burger in artisan restaurants, or the local butcher can freshly make burgers for the BBQ. At parties I have been offered mini-burgers in the form of canapés, or can-apps as we jokingly call them in our house. In America, there is some aviation slang known as a $100 hamburger, whereby a pilot flies up to two hours to eat at a neighbouring airport restaurant, before flying back to base. From the fridge to the griddle will do for me. www.sussexliving.com

Dear Sussex Living... …Around 100 visitors attended the Open Day on 3rd July arranged by the Friends of Weir Wood Nature Reserve, and featured in the June edition of Sussex Living. Using our telescopes young Common Terns were seen on the rafts, Great Crested Grebes on nests and colourful Mandarin ducks swimming around. In the air were buzzards and ravens; in the trees goldfi nches, great spotted woodpeckers and marsh tits. Moths trapped overnight were on display prior to release. Beside meadow grass paths, flower and insect identification boards helped walkers to identify their sightings. In the reed beds the bird ringing gave visitors the opportunity to see birds close up. Eight species were caught but most impressive were three kingfishers. After measuring and ringing, all 26 birds were released. Grass snakes, slow worms and lizards were caught

and placed in a glass tank for viewing before release. Pond dipping is always popular with children and our platform provides a safe place to do this. Experts were on hand to identify the ‘harvest’ of species living in water. Check our website www.weirwood. me.uk for next year’s date and for current sightings and photographs. Kind regards, Peter Erridge

…Thank you so much for advertising our recent charity events for Action Medical Research for Children in Sussex Living. We recently held a very successful Open Garden event in Forest Row. Tea and homemade cakes were provided by the Dormansland Committee and Friends of the Horsham based charity, and pre-loved accessories, scarves, handbags and jewellery were on sale in the beautiful garden, along with plants and other garden accessories. The Committee were delighted that more than 100 people attended and £1,042 was raised for Action Medical Research for Children. The charity funds medical research to beat the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children, and has spent over £110m funding some amazing breakthroughs, More information can be found at www.action.org.uk Kind regards Audrey

Place of Worship Set in the picturesque village of Twineham, St Peter’s Church is a place of restful worship, and is steeped in hundreds of years of fascinating history St Peter’s Church in Twineham is located idyllically, hidden away at the end of Church Lane serving a village of around 300 inhabitants. Some of its history is recorded in the archives held by West Sussex Record Office in Chichester. Twineham sits between two arms of river: The Adur and the Herrings Stream. It was originally known as Betwyneham – which may sound like “Between Them” but actually means “the homestead between the streams.” A pamphlet suggests Thomas de Swaffham became the first Rector on 14th July 1287 while Edward I was King of England. The font that was installed in the original church has now been on site for around 800 years. During the 16th century Flemish immigrants came to the area and began to make bricks from the local clays. It was these bricks that were used for the new St. Peter’s when construction began during the

Tudor year of 1516, in the reign of Henry VIII. It is thought this is the oldest brick built church in Sussex. It’s feasible that the giant oak tree beside the gravel path in the churchyard predates the rebuilding of the church. JF Grayling from the Sussex

The church and churchyard is a charming contemplative place, somewhere to ponder amongst the tranquillity and beauty of the surroundings West sussex RecoRd office The West Sussex Record Office is always looking for new material, so do get in touch if you think you have something suitable. Archaeological Society noted in 1918,“The tower has diagonal buttresses and shingled broach spire commonly know as the Sussex Cap.” Five hundred years on, this geometry remains beguiling and distinctive. The parish records began in 1716, preceeded by the 1606 Bishops Transcripts. These list the first recorded wedding on Saturday 17th June that year, and this was between Thomas Gate and Anne Fyte. We can only hope it was under blue summer skies, with smiles all round, and confetti fluttering gently over the bride and groom. The Bishops Transcripts records the first burial as being that of Richard Person on September 16th that same year. Many more gravestones surround the church, each with a more personal story. Some are tilted at various angles from the vertical, adorned by lichens and ivy, eroding with time, while others remain upright and well tended. Since 1694 the Quakers have retained a burial ground in the churchyard. This is marked by four corner stones, which are domed, engraved and well weathered. The incumbent Rector Richard Killingbeck allowed this after his daughter had married a Quaker. Between 1694 and 1732, sixty interments took place in the burial ground. Every three years since, the peppercorn rent of a farthing is paid and the Quakers hold a meeting in the church, enjoying tea and cake afterwards. The church and churchyard is a charming contemplative place, somewhere to ponder amongst the tranquillity and beauty of the surroundings. But of course, as soon as my mind drifted away and got lost in the moment, the shouts, cries and laughter from the adjacent school playground brought me rushing back to reality, back from centuries past to the current twenty first. www.sussexliving.com

Are you looking to expand your business? With government grants available, this could be your helping hand to a business boom Small to medium-sized businesses are the life blood of the UK economy, and nowhere more so than here in predominately rural West Sussex. From countryside to coast, the county is home to a diverse number of trades and skills from farmers and foresters to retail, engineering, finance, and health and fitness to name a few. A number of local government grants, available to apply for through West Sussex County Council, are now available to help small businesses grow, develop and flourish. If your business is in agriculture and forestry, or you’re a small rural business, a LEADER grant could be right for you. The Central Sussex and Sussex Downs & Coastal Plain Local Action Groups, who award the funding, have a total of £2.5 million to support projects in rural West Sussex, Lewes District and Hayling Island. Small rural businesses, farmers, foresters and rural community groups can apply for LEADER grants of up to £50,000 to carry out projects that will create jobs, help businesses to grow and benefit the rural economy. develop and take on more staff. Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the funding are accepted exclusively from those businesses in the Coast to Capital region including; West Sussex, Brighton and Hove, Lewes, Croydon, Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead, Mole Valley and Tandridge. Since the programme’s launch last year, £1million has been allocated across 28 applications, creating 57 jobs to date. This number is expected to double and rise to 148.

Groups can apply for LEADER grants of up to £50,000 to carry out projects that will create jobs

FUTURE rounds of LEADER funding, a total of 141 jobs have already been created over the last five years. Applications for LEADER grants can be made through West Sussex County Council, the local administering body. More information about the grants, eligibility criteria, and details on how to apply can be obtained by visiting the website at www.businesswestsussex. co.uk/leadergrants. Alternatively, you can contact the LEADER Grants Team at West Sussex County Council on 0330 22 28001 or by emailing

rdpeleader @westsussex.gov.uk. If you are a dynamic entrepreneur considering ways to secure funding for your start-up or established business, planning on expanding your company by creating new jobs, then you could be eligible to apply to the Business Growth Grants programme for a grant of between £15,000-£100,000. The programme, managed by West Sussex County Council on behalf of Coast to Capital, is targeted at small and medium businesses, including social enterprises, seeking financial support to

Coast to Capital LEP has recognised the difficulty businesses face to raise funding for future activity and expansion plans by pledging £2.4million to boost their long-term fortunes. Although open to all sectors, the partnership is especially welcoming of businesses within advanced engineering, manufacturing, creative, digital and IT, environmental technologies, goods and services identified as key sectors in the Coast to Capital region. Eligible businesses can apply to the Business Growth Grants programme by submitting an EOI form. Early application is suggested before funding runs out. More information on eligibility and criteria can be found on the Business West Sussex website, where you can download the EOI form, www.businesswestsussex. co.uk/businessgrowthgrants. Take advantage of these funding opportunities that could help your business go places. Act now and be part of the West Sussex business boom. www.sussexliving.com
