It’s finally time to say it… Happy Christmas! Whoopee!
I absolutely love this time of year – smiling faces, cosy fi res, chilly walks, Christmas carols and of course, mince pies. We have gone Christmas crackers with our December issue, and hope you thoroughly enjoy it. From meeting some local bell-ringers (pages 28-30), feasting on some absolutely delicious festive food (from page 58) to our magnificent gift guides (starting page 19), you are guaranteed to get in the festive spirit. This is also the time of year for thinking about others. Someone who has tirelessly fundraised for charity, in particular Marie Curie, is Sir Ranulph Fiennes, with an amazing total of £18.2 million raised so far. Lisa de Silva spoke to this extraordinary man who, in his 72nd year, is still forging forward with new adventures and even greater fundraising goals. Read this fascinating story from page 49. We’ve got another great quiz for you this month, with the opportunity to win some generously donated prizes from our advertisers. Turn to page 26 to test your wits! And if you are in need of a very fun, family friendly project over the Christmas holidays, why not turn your hand to a little gingerbread baking? All the details are on page 62, and I must say I had lots of (sticky) fun making mine! We are all off to our Christmas party now, but wish all our readers, advertisers and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

An historic Lewes church is battling the elements this winter to make essential repairs before the worst of the weather hits. Find out how you can help
Holy Restorations St Thomas à Becket is the parish church of the Cliffe, once its own province but now part of the county town of East Sussex. The building is said to have been erected by direct order of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, as a chapel of the ease of the college of Malling. Sitting at the bottom of Cliffe High Street, St Thomas is a focal point in the community. Thanks to Phase One of a £60,000 restoration project its historic clock is chiming once again. A 17th century mechanism, attributed to Ditchling blacksmith James Looker in 1671, it was painstakingly restored by the world’s oldest clockmakers, who reside in Rottingdean, famed for maintenance of the famous clock at the Palace of Westminster. “To have the clock chiming again is magnificent,” says Trevor Butler, Churchwarden at St Thomas à Becket. “Without this timely intervention the entire mechanism was in danger of seizing completely.” Also completed is restoration work on the church’s west window, commemorating Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, with new stonework and repaired stained-glass. “This was essential work as parts of the windows might have fallen and could have injured passers-by,” adds Trevor. The church has raised some £40,000 of its target but still
has more work which needs to be done, not least eradication of a death-watch beetle infestation in the south aisle which is threatening the roof structure. “We also have a leak in the roof over the remembrance altar,” explains Trevor. “Every time it rains, water runs down the walls and we end up with a puddle. If it’s not dealt with, it will only get worse once the trapped rain freezes and the split gets bigger.” Everyone has rallied round to support the church, including the town’s MP and Lewes’ mayor. “We’ve received help from so many quarters, and are extremely grateful”, says Trevor. “Grants from the Cliffe Feoffees, Chalkhill Trust, and Alan Evans Memorial Trust were enormously welcome, as were the countless number of individual donations and invaluable support from many quarters including local businesses.” The church has been holding a series of fundraising activates, including coffee mornings, a summer fair, successful harvest flower festival and a Christmas Fair on 3rd December in Cliffe Hall. “We just need to pull out all the stops now to find the final £20,000 to complete the work to this historically important and Listed building, to preserve it for future generations.” If you’d like to help, visit the church’s website, st-thomas-lewes.org.uk where you can find details of how to support and donate.

The Cinnamon Trust in Worthing and beyond helps give pets and their owners piece of mind, love, care and safety. Entirely free and volunteer run, this charity is a lifeline for many The wag of a tail when you come in the door, a warm cuddle as your furry friend is curled in your lap and the loving, appreciative gaze as you put down their food – pets really are the most loving companions and for many, especially the elderly or terminally ill, are their reason for living. But what if circumstances change and the owner needs help looking after their pet? The Cinnamon Trust, with a branch in Worthing, provide help and assurance that the pet is well looked after, loved and cared for in the long or short term. The effect pet companionship can have is very positive; they are a constant companion; they are affectionate and totally nonjudgmental, not to mention a form of protection from intruders as well as the more subtle form of protection from loneliness and despair. Having a focus outside of oneself, caring for and stroking a pet is very relaxing and can help reduce stress and anxiety. And for dog owners, the extra benefits of gentle exercise and fresh air helps to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. This special bond between owner and pet enhances life considerably, but when the time comes to think about what will happen to their beloved animal should they fall ill, have to go into residential care or if they die, can cause a great amount of anxiety

FRIEND and distress. Thankfully, this is where The Cinnamon Trust can help. Set up in 1985 by Mrs Averil Jarvis, and named after her beloved Corgi, Cinnamon, The Cinnamon Trust specialises in relieving the anxieties and problems faced by the elderly and terminally ill people and their pets. The service they offer focuses on preserving the relationship between owners and their pets and working directly with the owners to ensure the best is put in place for the animals. There is a national network of some 18,000 community service volunteers available to provide practical help, for example dog walking for housebound dog owners. A national fostering service is available for longer-term animal care, for example if the owner has a spell in hospital, and The Cinnamon Trust can also arrange long-term care for when owners have died or moved into residential accommodation,
ensuring their pets will have a safe and happy future. June Murfet, a volunteer and long-term fosterer for the trust, has been caring for the Bassett family’s dog, Milo. She was able to take Milo into the hospital to visit his owners, and said, “I told Jack about how Freddie (my own dog) and Mr Tiggs (Tiggy) are looking after Milo and how they really enjoy him playing with them. I showed Jack the photos I had taken at Milo’s first birthday party, which made everyone laugh!” The family were becoming desperate and if The Cinnamon Trust had not stepped in they may have had to rehome Milo. Could you help The Cinnamon Trust? The Worthing branch are looking for dog walking volunteers and local homes willing to foster a pet and make a real difference to owners and pets lives. For further information contact 01736 758707 or appeals@cinnamon.org.uk www.sussexliving.com

The More Radio Toy Appeal is back for Christmas 2016! Do you have any gifts left over from last year or could you donate a present this festive season? Last year’s hugely popular initiative saw thousands of gifts donated via drop off points, to chosen charities helping children and young people living in poverty in Sussex. Chris Birks, a More Radio presenter on the Chris Birks at Breakfast show, which is leading the campaign, says, “Surprisingly there are many children and young people here in Sussex who live below the breadline and who won’t be getting any Christmas presents this year. The More Radio Toy Appeal was set up to help children and teenagers living in impoverished and difficult circumstances to celebrate Christmas in a way that every child deserves – with a gift.” Last year’s response from the people of Sussex was overwhelming, resulting in More Radio hiring extra storage space to contain all the donations. “We were thrilled with the wonderful generosity of More Radio listeners in 2015, but we want to make it even bigger this year!” says Chris. “In particular for 2016, we are asking for gifts for older children and teenagers as in previous years, there’s been a bit of a shortage of donations for these age groups.” Officially launched on 21st November and running throughout December all the way until Christmas, the Toy Appeal operates in conjunction with three of the most deserving local charities, (as nominated by More Radio) and who specialise

in helping children and young people in the area. More Radio would love to hear from any local charities that would like to be considered as part of the Toy Appeal this year. So how does it work? Listeners can drop their wrapped presents (indicating roughly which age group it’s suitable for) at special distribution points clearly marked with the More Radio Toy Appeal logo. Drop off locations in Mid Sussex this year include Tesco stores in Lewes and Burgess Hill, Rushfields Plant Centre in Poynings, Skinners Sheds at Wyevale Garden Centre in Kingston, Mountain Warehouse in Lewes and Haywards Heath and Upmarket22 in Burgess Hill. Past donations have included everything from dolls and puzzles to toiletries and even tricycles and ride-on cars. As Chris explains, “People have been amazing, but donations can also be something small, costing just a couple of pounds. From the kids in care who benefit to those teenagers visiting drop-in centres in the run up to Christmas to get away from their home life for a few hours, it’s just a lovely thing for them to be part of - to receive a gift.”
The Toy Appeal was set up to help children and teenagers celebrate Christmas in a way that every child deserves – with a gift Drop off points in Worthing: Tesco Extra in New Road, Durrington and The Holmbush Centre; Wimpy, Chapel Road; Starbucks, Broadwater High Street; Skinners Sheds, Wyevale Garden Centre; Arundel Wetland Centre. Plus Sussex Living office in Hurstpierpoint. For the latest information go to the More Radio website www.moreradio.online. And don’t forget to listen to Chris and Hayley on the Breakfast show for updates.

Every year the centre rescues, re-homes or provides sanctuary for more than 1,500 animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, horses and donkeys to name a few. Justine Crookall, who is running the Mid Sussex appeal now in its 4th year is asking for people to fill a box or bag with food, toys and treats for the animals to enjoy over the festive period. In past years the appeal was a huge success with over 200 boxes in 2015. For details of the Burgess Hill drop off point, please contact shoeboxappeal@yahoo. co.uk or call 07999 912147. Cuckfield Christmas Tree Festival Cuckfield is gearing up for its annual Christmas Tree Festival. Decorators have already signed up and are busy putting the final touches to their bespoke decorations. Cuckfield Youth’s Tree is expected to be a real talking point this year. This year the festival will support the work of the Mid Sussex Branch of Parkinson’s UK, whose choir, Good Vibrations will form part of the musical programme. Martin King, a member of their choir, Good Vibrations, explained how singing is a good way to maintain the tone of facial muscles. Those who live with Parkinson’s know how quickly it becomes hard to smile at the people they meet. To support the amazing ‘can do’ attitude of the Mid Sussex Branch of Parkinson’s UK join us at Holy Trinity Church in Cuckfield. Doors are open from 11.30-7.30pm on Friday 9th, 11.30-6.30pm on Saturday 10th and 11.30-5.00pm on Sunday 11th December. The festival closes with a Carol Service at 6.00pm. You are advised to allow approximately one hour to see the trees and listen to the music. If you wish, your visit can be extended by visiting the old school where very reasonably priced refreshments will be served, closing about 30 minutes before the end of the festival each day. Entry is £4.00 per adult, children under 16 are free accompanied by an adult.
Coro Nuovo Christmas concert Coro Nuovo, the acclaimed Sussex choir, will be staging a concert at St Peter’s Church, Chailey as part of a church fundraising Christmas programme. The concert takes place on Sunday 10th December at 7.00pm and will be a selection of secular and non-secular Christmas music, interspersed with seasonal poetry and prose readings. Music includes traditional choral pieces
such as In Dulci Jubilo, O Magnum Mysterium by Morten Lauridsen, Bogoroditseye Dyevo by Rachmaninov, to more modern recognisable renditions such as White Christmas and Jingle Bell Swing. It all promises to be an excellent evening’s entertainment up to Coro’s usual high standards, and will also raise money for a worthwhile cause. Refreshments will be served. Tickets cost £10 (accompanied children under 16 free) and will be available on the door or from Janet Barnes on 01825 722574 or friendsofstpeterschailey@ hotmail.co.uk

Pre-Diabetes Programme The Mid Sussex Wellbeing team has new course dates available for the successful Pre-Diabetes Programme to help people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This free half day course aims to show people how they can take control for themselves and reduce the risk of developing the condition. Some people are more at risk of developing type 2 diabetes than others. Those with a family history of type 2 diabetes, a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 25 and adults from ethnic minority backgrounds face a greater risk and are being encouraged to sign-up for the prevention programme. The free course looks at small and manageable steps that individuals can take to avoid developing type 2 diabetes, such as changes to diet, increasing activity levels and other lifestyle factors. For more information or to book your space now please call the Wellbeing team on 01444 477191 or email wellbeing@midsussex.gov.uk.

Ditchling Film Society On Thursday 1 December 2016 our film for Christmas will be Rams, a deadpan comedy which is not only captivating and continually surprising but also a master class in combining character and landscape. The film is about a curmudgeonly farmer and his estranged brother, who live side-by-side in a secluded valley in Iceland tending their award-winning flocks of sheep. Although they share the land, they have not spoken to one another for forty
years. When a lethal disease suddenly infects some of the sheep, threatening all the residents’ livelihoods, the feuding brothers band together. They are still family, which is the reason this uplifting drama of mending old hurts resonates so strongly as there is nothing more relatable than a family dispute. Director: Grimur Hakonarson. Icelandic, 2015. 93 mins, 15 Cert. We shall be serving our
seasonal mulled wine and mince pies to get the Christmas festivities off to a good start! The films will be shown in Ditchling Village Hall. Our films start at 8.00pm. Doors open at 7.30 pm. Free coffee and biscuits beforehand and wine can be purchased by the glass. There is ample free parking behind the hall. Guests and temporary members are welcome for the sum of £5.00 payable at the door.

“If my beautiful lurcher could say this she would, 'Thank you Susan (Vets2Home) for caring so much when I could not cope anymore, for being so kind and gentle, for the time I had with my head in my mums lap at the end, for the peace I felt surrounded by my family in my home and thank you for giving them support when they needed it'. Dear Sussex Living... …Thank you so much for sharing the important messages around mental health in your October issue. Around 60 young people attended our World Mental Health Day event in Horsham and learnt how important it is to talk about mental health issues. Hopefully we can continue to challenge the stigmas and support those who need it. For those who weren’t able to attend, that support is available through our Youth Emotional Support service with information on our website (www.westsussex.gov.uk). Kind regards, Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life …I am writing to thank Sussex Living for the publicity it has given The Mid Sussex Franco-British Society. I really enjoyed doing the quiz and found out so many interesting facts about the Olympics. My friend Gill and I have just had a wonderful lunch in the Community Cafe, Hurstpierpoint courtesy of the voucher I won in the competition. The cafe has a lovely atmosphere and tasty menu. We are already planning another visit. Kind regards, Viv Elsworth

COMMUNIT Y
BY RUTH LAWRENCE
I made my way up the narrow spiral staircase to the belfry of Hurstpierpoint Parish Church. It was dark outside but the sound of bells lightened the evening and as I pushed open the old wooden door I was greeted by eight bellringers at their regular Thursday night practice. Tower Captain John Norris introduced me to two brothers, Jonathan and Alex who both go to Downlands School in Hassocks with other young ringers, Josh, William and Rachel. Jonathan started ringing a year ago aged 10 and he is one of the new wave of young bell-ringers learning this ancient communal art. I sat and watched as ringers took turns to lead the ringing, by calling directions for the variations in the complex patterns of changes that ringers know as ‘methods’; it’s an incredibly intricate process and has its own language of unique terms. There are eight bells and two dumb bells, for which a computer generates the sound to allow learners to practice. The ropes rise high up through the tower to large wheels attached to the bells. As the rope is pulled the wheel and bell rotate first one way and then the other causing the clapper to strike the bell almost two seconds after the rope is pulled. It was clear from the concentration on everyone’s face that this requires skill and timing. Ringers act as one in the same way that a musician plays every note of their chosen instrument. It is energetic too; the bells nearly lift the lighter members off their

feet and you have to reach high to gain enough pull on the rope. Being in the belfry while the bells are ringing is a very visceral experience – creaking wood and the rumbling of pulleys liken the tower to a ship under sail. There’s a dynamic quality which is exciting not only to listen to but to watch, in that it’s very cohesive to see eight people working as one unit and hear the results pealing out across the village and surrounding countryside. After every piece
of ringing, the ends of the ropes are loosely knotted and at the end of the session all the bells are rung almost simultaneously to give a beautifully harmonious multilayered sound. One of the ringers, Sue, has been ringing for almost two decades and she explained that ringers in their 30s and 40s are in short supply; apparently youngsters and older people make up the majority of ringers these days and they are keen to continued on page 30

recruit more people in the mid range age bracket. Rachel is one young member who has done really well. Her grandfather used to be the Master of the County Association and she always aspired to ring. John has been ringing nearly sixty years and he’s written a comprehensive booklet on the church bells at Hurst. He discovered that the fi rst defi nite evidence of bells in the church dated from 1685. As an entry for “mending ye Bells” exists in the church records in 1686, it suggests that the bells were already far from new. When the original church was demolished in 1843, five new bells were supplied to complete the new octave in 1846, four being cast especially for Hurst with Latin inscriptions chosen by the Rector. Three bells have since been recast, the most recent in 1953 ready for ringing for the Queen’s Coronation. In the mid 80s all the bells were rehung on cast iron headstocks and an electronic simulator and two dumbbells have been added since then. John describes the bells as “rather a mixed lot” as the work of five different founders yet they work very well together. The inscription on the fourth bell perhaps sums up their effectiveness; the Latin reads “Ecce Quam Bonum Et Quam Iucundum Habitare Fratres In Unum.” Translated this reads “Behold, how good and joyful a thing it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” Being in the belfry, you are

At the end of the session all the bells are rung almost simultaneously to give a beautifully harmonious multilayered sound surrounded by reminders of past ringers; a photo of 1832 depicts three members of the Davey family including Richard Davey, who fought under Wellington and became the parish clerk. There are plaques inscribed with names of previous ringers and an interesting feature is the CCTV of the bell chamber where you can see the bells ringing above. Much of the language of bellringing seems incomprehensible to a newcomer so a handy chart has been written to explain some of the terms to the newly initiated. I learnt that the ‘sally’ is the woolly part of the rope and the ‘tail end’ is the rope’s end. To ‘set your bell’ is to rest it gently against the ‘stay’ which is a piece of wood attached to the bell which enables it to rest upside down in preparation for ringing. The ringing methods are described by diagrams and people apparently fi nd it easier to learn the complex information by breaking it down into chunks to make it more manageable. The next time I hear bells ringing across fields or city, I know I’ll have a greater
awareness of what goes into the harmonious sound patterns that seem so much a part of the landscape. Not only do the bells mark occasion and celebration, they act as social cohesion, bringing people together regardless of age, background or ability. This ancient skill is still part of everyday life, and although hidden in the belfry, the sound reaches out and briefly touches the lives of everyone. Bell-ringing practice takes place in Hurstpierpoint Parish Church every Thursday from 7-8:45pm, all visitors are most welcome. An Art Deco Make this festive period one to remember and embrace an Art Deco Christmas. Vintage décor, a Christmas Eve cocktail party and a traditional family roast tick all the boxes for the most magical time of the year Christmas has been celebrated for over two millennia with both religious and secular traditions, but it wasn’t until the Roaring Twenties and Thirties that our modern day Christmas conventions were refi ned and standardised. This period, commonly referred to as Art Deco, was often festive and decadent as a matter of course and nowhere was this more apparent than during the Christmas season. Many of our modern day Christmas customs emerged during the Art Deco years. In fact, the only real difference is that in those days Christmas was short and sweet, instead of the three month onslaught we face today. Here we take a closer look at how Christmas was celebrated during this time.
The custom of the Christmas tree was fi rst brought to the UK during the late 19th century, when Prince Albert imported the German tradition of the decorated tree. By the Art Deco period, artificial trees were all the rage and those who could afford it

would buy a feather tree. Originally made in Germany around 1845, these were made from green dyed goose feathers arranged into pine needles and attached to wire branches, which were secured to a central dowel, acting as the trunk. All the best department stores sold these modern trees in a range of sizes and colours. For those of lesser means, a chopped tree from the garden or local woods would be brought into the home for decoration. One of the most notable trends of this time was the introduction of electric lights for the Christmas tree, as an alternative to candles which had previously been used (despite the obvious fi re risk!). For many, the main continued on page 36 SUSSEX LIVING December 2016

tree decorations were paper chains, but glass ornaments imported from Germany were also popular among the more wealthy. However, the growth of Woolworths in the UK soon brought this style of decoration to the masses, by reducing the price from five shillings to just one old penny per bauble. It was during this period that the ‘finial bauble’ popularised by Woolworths, became a must-have item for the top of the tree. This was a colourful glass bauble that clipped over the top branch of the tree with a slot on top for a candle. Elaborate paper decorations which folded out to form bells, stars or trees were also fashionable and stores also sold tinsel by the length to help ramp up the festive spirit. During the 1930s, nativity sets made from hand painted and glazed chalkware were also in demand. These generally comprised of eight figurines and a plywood stable, with a full set costing the equivalent of £12.60 today. However, unlike today, the tree and decorations

were not normally put up until Christmas Eve, giving the children a magical surprise on Christmas morning. The first commercial Christmas card was devised by Sir Henry Cole in 1843 and by the 1880s, the Post Office was already advising people to ‘post early for Christmas.’ During the Art Deco period, hand-made cards were popular, made from foil and ribbon. Owing to their fragility and often unusual shapes and sizes, most were hand delivered often with a gift of Christmas cookies. The Christmas stocking tradition which really took hold in the early 20th century, was adapted from the Saint Nicolas Day custom of leaving out shoes in the hope of receiving gifts for good behaviour. The tradition evolved with children leaving stockings at the end of their beds and those who were lucky enough, would find a selection of gifts inside on Christmas morning, which might include an apple, an orange, a soft cuddly toy, sweets and nuts. For adults, the emphasis was on sensible gifts for the home. So, items such as cooking utensils, vacuum cleaners or a new rug, were favourite presents. continued on page 38

As one piece of advice urged, “Give a woman something serviceable to wear or something she can use in her home and you gladden her heart. Give a man something for his auto, or something he can wear besides neckties and you win his thanks.” Not sure how well a new saucepan as a gift would go down in the 21st century!
For modern young couples, there was a trend to throw an annual cocktail party on Christmas Eve to impress friends with an array of canapés, decorations and a fashionable artificial tree. For families, the emphasis was on the big day itself. Presents were opened in the morning and lunch put in the oven to cook, while the family went to church. The trend for Christmas turkey did not take hold until after the Second World War and those that could afford it, would eat goose or beef served with home grown vegetables, followed by plum pudding and mince pies. After lunch, there was an afternoon walk, a snooze for the parents, followed by a carol service. During the evening, party games were played, a particular favourite being Blind Man’s Buff and there was Christmas cake for tea. From 1932, the King began his Christmas broadcast and for those families with a wireless, this was an important part of the day, in a similar way that the Queen’s Speech is today. On Boxing Day, many families visited relatives, enjoying eating leftovers with a glass of sherry, another tradition which has not really changed all that much over the decades. So however you choose to spend the day, here’s to a vintage Christmas and a Happy New Year!

ENVIRONMENT
BY RUTH L AWRENCE
Ear to the ground Close your eyes and open your ears. There is a whole world of natural sounds to be discovered, which Ruth Lawrence did with the helping hand of modern technology Humans are visual creatures. We tend to fi ll our mental space with sight, sometimes to the detriment of our other senses and noticing natural sound is perhaps not something we focus upon. I’ve just returned from a wildlife sound recording course near the east coast and three days of being immersed in listening has opened up an entirely new dimension to the natural world. Armed with a portable sound recorder with integral microphones and a pair of headphones, I began to pick up noises I would have otherwise missed because I am usually looking rather than listening. Birdsong is the most obvious sound most of us associate with being outdoors, and I picked it up on a device called a parabolic dish reflector which focuses distant sound into the microphone positioned in the centre of the dish. I pointed it at a scolding wren hidden in shrubbery and it was as though the tiny bird was perched on my shoulder and a pair of crows high in the tree canopy sounded as though they were cawing right next to me. A pair of tiny stereo mics attached to a coat hanger proved an effective way to eavesdrop on timid creatures; it could be hung on a branch and listened to from a distance, revealing another world of scurrying, calling wildlife hidden from the eye. I tried contact mics which could be tied to reeds or leaves to reveal amplified sounds
that would normally be inaudible and hydrophones which can be dropped into ponds, rivers or puddles to open up underwater realms rich in aquatic life. As the rural soundscape tends to be dominated by distant traffic, farm machinery and noisy power tools such as lawnmowers, chainsaws and strimmers, it becomes increasingly difficult to locate purely natural sound. Early morning is always best, before traffic begins to impinge on nature; woodland seems particularly rich in birdsong and the rustling paws of hidden creatures. Wind sounds utterly different according to which tree it passes through while branches rub and clack together, giving a signature to each part of the wood. Recording sounds seems an immersive way to ignite memories of wild places – press ‘play’ and you are immediately transported to the place you made the recording. A photo can only reveal an image whereas a sound takes you back there, among the flock of starlings, the wood at dawn or the thunderstorm unravelling across distant hills. Recording equipment is relatively inexpensive at entry level and light enough to be portable even on a long walk. I’m certainly far more aware now of sounds that indicate another presence, be it by wingbeat, call or unidentified footfall. Focus on listening and numerous species will reveal themselves even if they remain invisible to the eye.

GARDENING

Mistletoe Magic Travel back in time to the ancient world of mistletoe. You won’t fi nd pots of it for sale in the garden centre – but you can always grow your own There cannot be a plant more shrouded in myth and magic than mistletoe. Its curious, slightly sinister appearance commands our attention and respect. Prehistoric mistletoe hails us from the dawn of time: “I have seen millennia pass by, whereas you, mere mortals, are just wafting through”. ‘Respect’ is the word to remember. All parts of the plant are poisonous, so wash your hands thoroughly if you’ve been decking the halls with it. Ancient druids were completely potty about mistletoe, especially when they found it growing on oak trees. These rare sightings were considered highly propitious and wondrous, as it much prefers the softer timbers of apple, poplar and lime. It’s also regularly found on alder, hawthorn, willow and rowan. The Victorians, with their love of ritual, costume and bling, reinvented Druidism, Christmas and much else besides. They

Ancient druids were completely potty about mistletoe, especially when they found it growing on oak trees re-popularised the custom of kissing under the mistletoe; a tradition which goes way back to ancient Norse legend. Other European cultures saw mistletoe
as a symbol of peace, purity or good luck. It’s possible to grow your own mistletoe, but patience is required. Folk will tell you this ‘parasitic’ plant will kill a tree – that’s not entirely true. Mistletoe can see off a tree, but usually an unhealthy specimen that probably would have died anyway. As to being parasitic, that’s not quite right either. To be pedantic, mistletoe is defined as a ‘semiparasite’ because it is capable of making its own chlorophyll, (food.) All it requires from its host is a high-rise home, some basic mineral salts and water. Most mistletoe sold in the UK comes from France - and there’s the problem. Fickle mistletoe is site specific. French mistletoe likes growing in France, Hereford mistletoe likes growing in Herefordshire, and so on. Your best chance of success is to fi nd a local source of berries – not now, but in February. That’s the other problem - berries in December are usually under-ripe and won’t germinate. Ripe berries are translucent, with their black seeds clearly visible. Take about 20 berries and simply rub them onto the sides or undersides of branches. The sticky pulp will ‘glue’ the seeds in place. Most of the seeds will be taken by birds, so keep repeating the experiment and wait… After about 2 years, (yes, really) you may see a few tiny stems and leaves emerging. The plants will be specifically male or female, which is why you need several in close proximity to cross-pollinate. Only female plants produce berries. After a slow start, mistletoe grows vigorously. Branches can distort and break under its substantial weight, so, should you be blessed with an abundance of the stuff, be sure to give it an annual prune. Strangely enough, Christmas is a good time to do it.

CHRISTMAS AT HOME
The festive season is nearly upon us, yet there is still time to secure a new home, put up a tree and deck your new halls with boughs of holly Christmas will soon be here with all the fun, festivities and family that are so familiar to us all. Moving into a lovely home is truly the icing on the cake and it is not too late to secure a property in time for the big day.
PROPERTY MARKET STILL ACTIVE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
You may be surprised to learn that the fi nal weeks coming up to the Christmas period are often very active in the property market. There are buyers and sellers who have been looking to move throughout the year and who now shuffle into position. Perhaps a vendor has marketed through the summer months and has now reduced the price to give the property the prospect of a quicker sale. Buyers who have quibbled, sometimes for months, over which home to purchase, are now mentally disposed into making a fi nal decision. Developers in particular often fi nd they are inundated with requests for a completion of the build on specific plots. Buyers may have committed to purchase some months in advance, so to acquire their brand new home
when they have time off work to enjoy their home is appealing. It is not unknown for several houses on a large new development to complete on the same day. Removal vans abound and it is a lovely time for new neighbours to meet up and become friends.
END OF YEAR MARKETING
If you have not yet sold do not despair. Traditionally many sales go through at this time of the year so even if you have been on the market for some months there are cash buyers who can still exchange and complete before the 25th December and the proximity of a two week festive season prompts them into making a fi nal decision and a purchase!
MAKE YOUR HOME WELCOMING
With dark afternoons and evenings remember to ensure your driveway is well lit and that your front door is wiped clean from the detritus of autumn. Turn on your bright kitchen lights to show viewers your sparkling work surfaces and look to lighting table lamps to create warm glowing nooks. Do remember to turn the heating on. A warm home is a welcoming home.
Bag your buyer with Yuletide flair It might be prudent to decorate your property a little before Christmas just to give potential purchasers an appreciation of how wonderful and welcoming your home can be. Older style houses immediately lend themselves to being dressed in a traditional manner; a festive wreath on a solid wooden front door is a classic, or a large beamed hallway and oak staircase is a magical place in which to place an imposing Christmas tree twinkling with lights. In any home the kitchen is the hub of the house and table decorations and scented candles give a relaxed ambiance. If you have one, light your open fire to create a cosy atmosphere. Modern homes with their sleek lines also offer a wide choice of ideas where Christmas trees of various hues can look trendy, enhanced with the use of fashionable blue and bright white lights which can add to the chic approach.

There cannot be many people in this world who have boldly gone where no man has gone before, but Sir Ranulph Fiennes is one of them. Hailed as the World’s Greatest Living Explorer by the Guinness Book of Records, Sir Ranulph is the only man alive to ever have circumnavigated the world on its polar axis using only surface transport. Even now at the grand age of 72 years, he continues to break world records, taking on the Global Reach Challenge to raise funds for the cancer charity, Marie Curie. This latest record setting challenge will see Sir Ranulph aim to become the first person to have crossed both polar ice caps as well as climb the highest mountain on every continent. For Sir Ranulph, the Global Reach Challenge will represent the culmination of a lifetime of exploration and death-defying challenges, motivated by his desire to raise money for Marie Curie. Having experienced at first hand the distress of watching his first wife Ginny, struggle with terminal illness, Sir Ranulph has tirelessly raised funds for charity and of the amazing £18.2m total raised so far, over £8m of that has gone to Marie Curie. So where did this incredible drive for epic adventures come from? Sir Ranulph suggests it was merely a force of circumstance. “All I ever really wanted to do was what my father did, which was to be the colonel of a great Scottish regiment.” Sadly, Sir Ranulph’s father was killed in action during the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1943, before his son was born the following year in Windsor. Initially, his mother took the family to live in South Africa, but
Sir Ranulph already had a taste of adventure in 1967, having led an expedition up the largest glacier in continental Europe they returned to settle in Lodsworth, West Sussex in 1956, when Ranulph was 12 years old. “Although essentially I grew up in West Sussex, my mother sent me to school in Wiltshire for a year where I lost my South African accent, thankfully in time for me to go to Eton, where you shouldn’t have an accent,” he laughs. “Unfortunately I wasn’t very academic and at the time you needed A Levels to get to Sandhurst, where I needed to go to follow in my father’s footsteps.” Despite failing his A Levels, Sir Ranulph decided he would still join the army, serving in the

Royal Scots Greys Regiment. “I served for eight years in total, all the time hoping they’d change the stupid A Level rules, but they never did. So despite becoming one of the youngest Captains in the British Army and completing a spell with the SAS, I left aged 24, to become a civilian with no money and no idea what to do next,” he confesses. Despite his lack of academic prowess, Sir Ranulph’s fortunes were much more successful in the romantic sphere. Ginny Pepper lived in the neighbouring Sussex village of River and had fi rst met Sir Ranulph when he moved to Lodsworth. He was 12 and she was 9, but the childhood sweethearts didn’t start dating until their teenage years. “Her father disapproved and we had trouble with him for many years,” explains Sir Ranulph. “But thankfully Ginny’s mother was on our side and we married when I left the army in 1970 and then had to face the reality of how we made a living.” By that time Sir Ranulph had already had a taste of adventure, having led an expedition up the largest glacier in continental Europe, the Jostedalsbreen, in Western Norway, in 1967. In places the glacier is almost a sheer wall of ice, but the team also completed the fi rst ever descent of the avalanche-ridden glacier in 1970. In between these two expeditions, Sir Ranulph, along with Ginny, led the Nile Hovercraft Expedition in 1969, ascending the longest river in the world. In addition to this, Sir Ranulph had worked as an adventure training officer during his time in the army. “It was during the Cold War and I’d taught groups of Scottish soldiers skiing and canoeing continued on page 52

in Germany, mainly to stop them beating each other up out of boredom, as the Soviet army never bothered to attack.” Building on this experience, Sir Ranulph and Ginny decided to try to make a living out of leading expeditions. However, starting out was difficult and the couple had to work in pubs at weekends to pay the bills. It also soon became clear that publicity was key to getting sponsorship for their expeditions and it seemed that at the time the British media were only interested in all things cold and icy. Given this, Sir Ranulph and Ginny quickly realised that polar expeditions were the way to go and the Transglobe Expedition, which was seven years in the planning, remains not just one of Sir Ranulph’s most epic journeys, but one of humankind’s most incredible achievements. The expedition involved circumnavigating the globe vertically, using only surface transport. The team covered 52,000 miles during 1979-82 and Sir Ranulph and his expedition partner, Charles Burton (who died in 2002), remain the only humans to have visited both North and South poles and to cross both the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans travelling only on the world’s surface. “Charlie was from East Sussex and we spent a large part of those three years arguing over whether East or West Sussex was best,” laughs Sir Ranulph. “The hardest part was crossing the Arctic Ocean, which is more lethal than crossing Antarctica, because Antarctica is ice sitting on land, whereas the Arctic ice is partially sitting on water.” It was after this expedition that the Guinness

Sir Ranulph and his expedition partner, Charles Burton remain the only humans to have visited both North and South poles travelling only on the world’s surface Book of Records called Sir Ranulph the World’s Greatest Living Explorer. “To be honest that expedition was what I would call proper exploring because when we did the 900 miles across the Antarctic, it was uncharted and we were mapping it for the first time ever. That was genuine exploration. Today that type of exploring has become impossible, owing to polar-orbiting satellites which make every corner of the world mappable,” he explains. “So nowadays, you get adventurers, not explorers.” Despite spending a lot of time at the Poles, Sir Ranulph prefers hot climates and along with Ginny spent 26 years searching on and off for the lost city of Ubar in the Arabian Desert. “We did eight search expeditions over 26 years and finally located it in 1992.” Yet, it is the polar expeditions for which Sir Ranulph is most famous, including the Arctic Solo Expedition in 2000. The aim was to walk solo and unsupported to the North Pole, continued on page 54

The pleasure of real wool and the luxury of cashmere are simply unbeatable. Discover a world of stylish, warm and cosy styles from the knitwear experts, WoolOvers
Wrapped in
LUXURY
Nothing can take the chill off winter days with as much style and warmth as pure wool. Luckily, Burgess Hill is home to the best comprehensive knitwear specialists who stock an unparalleled range of wool, cashmere and merino clothing. WoolOvers was established in 1989 and last year, Langholm Capital took the company to a new level with a major rebrand while expanding the factory shop to three times its original size. “People are bored of fast fashion,” explained Martin Francis as he showed me round the impressive new premises. “Our clothes are ageless and superb quality.” I have to agree, no one could fail to look great in these stylish reinterpretations of timeless classics
and contemporary ranges. I plunged my hand into a drift of 100% cashmere sweaters and could feel the warmth immediately – no need for bulky layers when cocooned in luxurious softness such as this. The colours are rich and subtle; dove grey, camel, teal and cream are the perfect natural palette to remind us of the world outside and the lambswool range offers an almost limitless choice of colour and shade. From vibrant turquoise and deep burgundy wine to dark kingfisher and tweed green, there is literally a hue for every season, occasion or taste. My particular favourites are the ponchos. Few items offer so much versatility and good looks. They can be thrown over a sweater or T-shirt or combined with a vintage frock for a funky, quirky alternative. From the simple cashmere-merino combination, the striped button front poncho and the latest Italian lambswool winter poncho it’s an item that should be a staple in any wardrobe. Ribbed sweater dresses, chunky cardigans, roll necks and throws also vie for attention in the beautifully photographed new winter catalogue, and at surprisingly reasonable prices starting from £25. Men have a superb collection of
durable wool and cashmere jerseys in rugged classic styles too, and boasting the same natural palettes for each season. With Christmas on the way, 100% cashmere scarves and gloves make excellent presents and merinocashmere mix socks are perfect for keeping out the cold. The factory shop is bursting with all the new ranges, now folded and easy to see off the hangers with numerous changing rooms and a lounge area to browse and make your selection. Although the shop is open seven days a week, WoolOvers’ dedicated call centre upstairs is on hand until 10pm on weekdays where you can talk to a real person and place an order over the phone. Whether you wish to revamp your wardrobe, replace your much loved favourites with new styles and colours or gift someone with the gorgeous feel of pure, natural fibres, WoolOvers has more choice, quality and luxury than ever. Treat yourself to wonderful clothes that will give you style, warmth and pleasure for years to come.

but he was forced to abandon the attempt after his sled fell through weak ice. Whilst trying to free the sled, Sir Ranulph’s hands got wet which led to severe frostbite. On returning home, doctors insisted the frostbitten fingers could not be removed for five months. Frustrated by the pain, Sir Ranulph removed them himself in his garden shed with the aid of an electric fretsaw. This incident highlights the sheer determination and levels of endurance Sir Ranulph has drawn

upon to overcome whatever obstacles stand in his way and his own health is included in that. In 2003, Sir Ranulph had a heart attack, spent three days in a coma and had double bypass surgery, but just four months later ran seven marathons in seven days on seven continents at 59 years old, when many are content to start drawing their pension. Indeed, age is clearly just another challenge to be conquered, as in 2015, aged 71, Sir Ranulph completed the Marathon des Sables, known as the ‘toughest footrace on earth,’ in aid of Marie

Curie. Covering 156 miles in the Saharan desert, temperatures over the six day marathon reach 50C, with competitors carrying all their own equipment. The toughest part of the challenge is the double marathon day, where two marathons are completed back to back in the searing heat and Sir Ranulph is the oldest Briton ever to complete this gruelling race. Now happily married to Louise and with a ten year old daughter, many septuagenarian world record holders would be happy to hang up their crampons, but not Sir Ranulph. Back in 2009, he completed the Grand Slam of exploration, of having climbed Everest and crossed both the North and South Polar icecaps, but challenges evolve and today, The Big One not only involves reaching both poles but also being the first to climb the highest mountain on every continent. This has been too hard to resist and despite now being 72 years old with a condition called Cheyne-Stokes which makes breathing difficult above 16,000 feet, being diabetic, having chronic back pain and having lost half of the fingers and the thumb on his left hand, Sir Ranulph has embraced the opportunity of the Global Reach Challenge. Having already crossed both polar ice caps and climbed Mount Everest (Asia), Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mount Kosciusko (Australasia) and Mount Elbrus (Europe), which he completed this July, Sir Ranulph still needs to climb Mount Carstensz (Australasia), Mount Vinson (Antartica), Aconcagua (South America) and Denali (North America), one of the world’s most dangerous and difficult mountains to climb. The first attempt to climb Denali was abandoned in May owing to chronic
back pain and this final mountain represents the most gruelling challenge of them all. “It’s all getting harder. Things are definitely getting worse health wise; I feel rather geriatric. You get to a certain age and there are going to be sight problems and deafness and the risk of Alzheimer’s. Climbing four further mountains in a short space of time is going to be a definite challenge, especially climbing Denali in Alaska which only had an 18 per cent success rate during this year’s season,” he said. “But, if it raises money for Marie Curie then I would really like to have a go.” Sir Ranulph is hoping this last great push will take the total amount of money he has raised for charity to £20m, which would be an almost superhuman achievement. And what life advice would this remarkable man offer us mere mortals? “Just remember that you do have the ability to control your thoughts and therefore your mood. You are what you think. It is difficult and you have to keep working at it, but if you make the decision to be happy or to be successful in your life, you can make it a reality.” Wise words from a man used to pushing himself to the limit, whose commitment and determination are second to none. All costs of the Global Reach Challenge have been met by sponsorship money. This means that all monies donated to Sir Ranulph’s attempts go straight to Marie Curie and if you would like to support the charity please go to www.justgiving. com/Ranulph. Chin-chin!
With Christmas just around the corner, stocking up on top quality drink for parties and presents is a must for the festive season. Time to head to The Wine Stand!
Colin Bates and his father Roy both worked for Threshers and when the firm collapsed, they decided to set up their own shop six years ago. Now The Wine Stand in Burgess Hill stocks one of the largest selections of wines, spirits and beers in Sussex. With 170 varieties of beer to choose from, there’s something for every taste and local ales are a speciality. Craft beers are very popular now; often made by hand in smaller quantities, they can contain exotic hops or unusual ingredients and come from all over the world.
A great selection of gins includes Colombian and Japanese gins and the smooth, mellow local Brighton Gin which is best enjoyed neat Recently Colin has noticed an increased demand for local wines. Here in Sussex we have the same chalky soil as the Champagne region of France and warmer summers are helping to make our award winning wines highly desirable. Court Garden wine from Ditchling, Plumpton College wines and
those from Biddenden in Kent are among those to enjoy this winter. There’s also a great range of ports and spirits including extremely rare 17-year old smoky flavoured Japanese whisky, which is not available outside London and Macallan, and an 18-year old Single malt Scottish whisky with a sobering price tag. A great selection of gins includes Colombian and Japanese

gins and the smooth, mellow local Brighton Gin which is best enjoyed neat. If you’re hosting a party, glass rental is available and Colin can obtain any drink you request. The Wine Stand also functions as a handy UPS postage drop-off station where you can leave parcels for delivery, and has plentiful off-road parking. Wine tasting sessions take place every month with details on the website and Colin told me that they “are the most inexpensive specialist wine stockists in Sussex.” Next summer, customers will be able to bring their own bottles to fill up with Italian wine from the barrel; prices are kept low because shipping charges are cheaper and Colin can offer a top quality product at a better price. “We enjoy being here, talking to customers and sampling products,” said Colin. It certainly seemed the ideal place to be on a chilly winter afternoon and customers are guaranteed a warm and knowledgeable welcome. With the shop open seven days a week from 11am to 10pm including Christmas Day, it looks set to be another busy season for Colin, Roy and assistants Mike, Simon and Aimee. Whether you enjoy fine local wine, flavoursome real ales or aged whiskies, there’s plenty to whet your taste buds in this brim-full shop with the friendliest of welcomes.

SUSSEX LIVING December 2016
Black olives Baby vine tomatoes 1 small bunch of flat parsley, chopped 40cm Paella pan
METHOD
1. Heat the oil over a medium heat in a paella pan, or wide, shallow non-stick sauté pan. 2. Season the chicken and gently fry for about 5 minutes, until lightly coloured. Add the chorizo and cook for 30 seconds, turning once, then spoon the meat into a bowl leaving the oil in the pan.
3. Add the onions to the pan and fry gently for 4-5 minutes until soft and very lightly browned. Add the peppers and green
beans/peas and cook for 2 minutes until they are beginning to soften. Stir in the garlic, smoked paprika, saffron, bay leaf and rice and cook for 1-2 minutes until the rice is glistening all over. 4. Return the chicken and chorizo to the pan, along with any juices. Stir well, then pour in the chicken stock and season with black pepper. Bring to a simmer over a medium heat. Cook for about 12 minutes, stirring occasionally. 5. Tip the mussels in and stir thoroughly, making sure they are well tucked into the hot rice and steaming liquid. Return to a simmer and cook for 3 minutes or until most of the mussels have opened, stirring occasionally. 6. Scatter the squid and prawns over the top of the paella and stir well once. Continue cooking for 4-5 minutes until the squid and prawns are cooked, the rice is tender and almost all the liquid has been absorbed. The prawns should be completely pink when cooked. 7. It is important not to keep stirring after the squid and prawns are added as you want the rice to become lightly browned and a bit sticky at the sides of the pan as this adds flavour. Add a little more water if the rice looks dry before it is ready.

be prepared nearer the time required, however crostinis will stay crisp for longer.
Christmas cheeseboard
To create the perfect cheeseboard this Christmas, I suggest you go for a balance of styles, types and textures of cheese. Usually three to five cheeses make a good selection. I chose Blue Shropshire which is a smooth blue cheese with a tangy flavour and creamy texture, a rich Brie made with double cream, Swiss Gruyere, nutty with a hint of caramel and a Goats Cheese Log. For those who enjoy a Cheddar just how it used to taste, try a local full flavoured variety which is tangy and powerful. To accompany this final course, grapes, celery, figs and olives are just right, and please don’t forget the biscuits – charcoal hand baked wafers make a change and perhaps a box of assorted crackers and of course, some port for the grown-ups!

Gingerbread HOUSE
Create your own winter wonderland with this gingerbread house recipe. It makes plenty of dough for a medium sized house and lots of trees. You can keep the decorations elegant and simple or go rather over the top if you wish, like I did! Whatever you do, it’s loads of fun for the whole family to get involved with over the Christmas break. Sussex
Ingredients
375g unsalted butter 300g dark muscovado sugar 150g golden syrup 900g plain white flour 1tbsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tbsp ground ginger ½ tsp nutmeg ½ tsp cinnamon
For the icing
2 egg whites 450g icing sugar, sifted 2 tsp lemon or orange juice Sweets to decorate (including hard boiled sweets for the stained glass windows)

SUSSEX LIVING December 2016
A cut out house template (roof 17x12.5cm; sides14.5x11.5cm with cut out windows; front and back 16x11.5cm with a triangular 9.5cm high elevation with windows, a door and star or heart shape cut out; chimney front and back 5x4cm; chimney sides 5x4cm with a 2cm triangle cut out the bottom to sit over apex of roof ) 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/ gas 6. Over a gentle heat, melt the butter, sugar and golden syrup together. 2. Sift the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl and make a well in the middle. Pour in the wet mixture and
mix, then kneed into a stiff dough. 3. Taking a section of dough, roll it out on greaseproof paper to about the depth of two pound coins. 4. Cut around all the templates and bake for about 7-8 mins,
until firm. For the stained glass windows, crush boiled sweets, sprinkle into the window holes and cook for a further 1-2 mins, until melted. Leave all to cool completely. 5. For the icing, whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until firm, then add sifted icing sugar a little at a time. Add lemon or orange juice and beat until very thick and peaked. 6. Now decorate the house sections, and when ready assemble the house on a board using the icing to stick all the pieces together. This is fiddly and easier with two people and some props! Decorate the trees and stick in blobs of icing on the board. Create snow using desiccated coconut or icing sugar. 7. Don’t forget to place either a tea light or an LED candle inside the house!

A
Christmas
PIE
Is there any better way to relax during the festive season than with a cup of tea and a warm mince pie? Robert Veitch fi lls us in on their origins Mincemeat, and let’s be clear this is not minced meat, has it roots in Middle Eastern culture where ancient pies consisted of meat with fruit and spices. In Tudor times shrid pies were made from shredded meat, suet and dried fruit. Cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg were added to the recipe, symbolically representing the Three Wise Men. These pies evolved into long rectangular affairs known as coffins. Elizabethans would call them minched pyes or Christmas pyes, when they first became associated with the festive period. Mutton, veal and ox tongue were popular ingredients back then. Over time a change in fashion saw the pies shrink in size and become rounded. The Victorians added raisins, currants, apples, lemons, oranges and brandy to the mixture, along with sugar from the Caribbean. With so many ingredients the meat content began to fall, and it fell further when the concoction began to be prepared and stored in jars in readiness for Christmas. These days, all that remains of the meat is the suet.
There are old wives tales aplenty associated with mince pies. One suggests mincemeat should only be stirred in a clockwise direction to avoid bringing bad luck upon oneself for the following year. Another tale recommends the eating of a mince pie in a different house on each of the twelve days of Christmas. In the UK we purchase 370,000,000 mince pies every Christmas, eating 295,000,000 of them at a rate of 10,000 every second, and possibly a few spilled crumbs for the dog. The rest end up high in the sky, fuelling reindeer and their master. So when you ogle at these diminutive pies on a plate, remember the antiquated history, and don’t forget to leave one outside on Christmas Eve for you know who…

local walk
by les campbell
The fairly short distance of this walk makes it ideal for darker December days and should afford you lovely views of the Ouse Valley Viaduct
Whiteman’s
Green Walk This walk is from the sports ground car park at Whitemans Green situated on the B2115 (Staplefield Road) north of Cuckfield. It passes close to Borde Hill gardens and some of the route follows the High Weald Landscape Trail, a long distance walkers’ route between Horsham and Rye. From the car park return to the road and turn right, crossing to the opposite pavement and turn left along a track signed to Blakeney House etc. Just before the entrance to Trolls Dell, turn left on a signed path and go through a metal gate and carry on ahead on an obvious path along the right-hand field edge. The path bears right downhill to another metal gate and bearing right passes through a wooded dell to emerge by a 3 fingered way mark sign. Take the left of two signed paths. After about 100 meters, pause here, and admire the lovely views northwards across the Ouse Valley. When the trees are not in full foliage, the magnificent Ouse Valley Viaduct carrying the London to Brighton mainline may be glimpsed, crossing the valley away to your right. The path drops downhill through a golf course and across the fairway – watching out for flying golf balls! Drop downhill aiming for a gap in the trees

between two small bridges which are there purely for the convenience of golfers! Cross the stream and carry on uphill on a wide green path which passes between bushes to another signpost and carry on downhill to a four-way junction of paths.
When the trees are not in full foliage, the magnificent Ouse Valley Viaduct may be glimpsed Turn right along the obvious track (Spark’s Lane) and follow this out to the B2036 at Brook Street. Cross this busy road with care, turn right and shortly turn left onto the track alongside Chapel Gallery, passing by the buildings of Tanyard Farm bearing left to a stile beside a metal gate. Go over this, and bear right uphill to a stile and signpost. Scramble up the bank and bear left along the field edge to eventually enter a wood in the corner of the field. At the end of the wood, go over another stile and uphill through pasture to cross a further 2 stiles and proceed alongside a plantation (The Tolls). www.sussexliving.com
Where this bears right, carry on uphill to a stile and maintain direction ahead across pasture to the distant corner of woodland. Exit via a gate and turn hard right along a tarmac track and stay on this track for a little under a mile, as it passes through Lullings Farm to reach Hanlye Lane. Cross Hanlye Lane to the pavement opposite, and turn right along the pavement which is initially separated from the road by a hedge. Just past the bus shelter, close to the former Cuckfield Hospital, cross the road and take the signed surfaced twitten which leads out to the mini roundabout by former The Ship Inn, now a convenience store. From here it is just a short walk back along the B2115 (Staplefield Road) to the starting point of the walk.

Please note this walk is a repeat, kindly re-walked and checked by the Ramblers for Les who is recovering from a walking accident. We wish him well for a speedy recovery. We are very grateful to Les Campbell for bringing us new and exciting local walks every month. A founder member and former Chairman of the Mid Sussex Ramblers, he is a very experienced and enthusiastic walker indeed. HEALTH & FITNESS

FESTIVE
With the right amount of exercise or activity, you shouldn’t be precluded from enjoying an extra mince pie or two It’s that time of year again – from charity Christmas cards, twinkling lights and nativity plays to ‘goodwill to all men’ and settling in to watch a great TV box set on the sofa. Whatever Christmas means to you, it also invariably signals a period of indulgence food and drink-wise, coupled with (potential!) bouts of inactivity. We all deserve a break from the regimen and the stresses and strains of our everyday life. This is certainly no killjoy column – after all there’s fun to be had in the ‘Eat, Drink and Be Merry’ approach. But for those of you who want to keep on top of things just a little over the holiday season and start the New Year a tad less glutted and guilty than in previous years, then read on.

FITNESS A WEIGHTY ISSUE
On average Britons will gain between 0.5 and 1kg in weight over Christmas. This doesn’t sound like much but the bad news is that according to research, this extra weight in people is hard to lose and they will still weigh more in February and March than they did in October the previous year. With the right amount of exercise or activity, you shouldn’t be precluded from enjoying an extra mince pie or two or sampling some deliciouslooking canapés at your neighbour’s’ drinks party. It’s all about sprinkling your festive period with little bouts of extra exercise and movement here and there. For those of you who prefer moderate intensity exercise – no guesses as to what’s effective and easy to incorporate into your everyday life. Walking everywhere will burn calories. Weave a good brisk
walk outside in the fresh air into your weekends in December and before a festive social event. Make sure you get a walk in before your Christmas dinner to raise your metabolism prior to the festivities. A 5k walk at an average pace can burn up to 186 calories (a mince pie has approximately 289 calories), and adding some intermittent running and fast power walking into that will obviously burn more. If at home, use the stairs or run up and down yours a few times while the sprouts are cooking to get your heart rate going. Actively playing with your children or grandchildren is also classed as a moderate form of exercise. So make the most of family gatherings and throw yourself on the floor and pretend to be a lion or play vigorous hide and seek around the house with the little ones – they’ll love you for it and you’ll burn some extra calories along the way! Happy Christmas!
Yuletide can come loaded with calories but with a little bit of extra work, you can have your Christmas cake and eat it…
CAUTION: If you are unsure of any new excercise regime please consult your GP before commencing.

Pamper Princess
Christmas is the time for giving, so why not give yourself a present this Christmas Eve and indulge in the ultimate pampering evening in? Bliss!
y u
BEAU TIFU L
Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year but let’s be honest, it’s hectic as well! Whether you are hosting or attending, all the planning, pressure, last minute food and present shopping is exhausting. So it’s no surprise that by the time Christmas Eve comes around we are all in dire need of a bit of relaxation and down time. While Christmas Eve for many is the time to go down the pub for a drink with friends, this year why not have an ultimate pamper evening in? Wake up for the big day feeling rested, refreshed and ready for that festive cheer. First of all, make yourself a big cup of tea and put on some Christmas music while setting up for your pampering session. As you begin to relax and get into the festive mood, light some scented candles. Anything seasonal, for example cinnamon or blackberry and bay will transform your home into a Christmas haven at once. Try to avoid overpoweringly strong candles though, as the last thing you want is a headache. Wipe the day away using micellar water on your face and put on a face mask before running a hot bath. Pick a bubble bath with an amazing wintery fragrance, such as apple or
berries with spices. Why not splash out on a bath pillow too, so you can completely relax and enjoy your tub time? Once you’re out of the bath, it’s time to give your skin some extra attention. It’s the perfect night to do this, especially as it’s winter and you want to look fresh and glowing for Christmas Day. Start by spraying on some toner water and moisturising your face before using a body butter that is packed with essential oils to help you unwind. No matter how old we are, it’s always challenging to fall asleep on Christmas Eve, so these essential oils will help you drift off easily. Now it’s time to grab your most comfortable pyjamas and put on your favourite Christmas fi lm. Treat yourself to a glass of bubbly or mulled wine and eat some delicious, warm canapés. And for the final step, there’s no better way to end such an indulgent evening than with a good manicure. Go for a festive shade, like something red or gold and glittery. Once you’re feeling sleepy, it’s time for a hot chocolate and some biscuits before heading to bed. If you feel like you’re missing out on socialising by not going to the pub, why not ask your mum, sister, daughter or friend to join you on your pampering evening? It’s a must this year; you deserve it after all that stressful build up to Christmas!
Wake up for the big day feeling rested, refreshed and ready for that festive cheer

What’s on your wish list?
What do you wear over the festive season? A jolly Christmas jumper of course! Go loud or go subtle but whatever you do, make sure you go Christmas fantastic
Love them or loath them, Christmas jumpers are an outfit choice of many around the festive season. TV made them popular in the 80s, when presenters wore them during holiday shows and singers wore them when appearing on Christmas specials. These mostly knitted jumpers would be Christmas themed with large pictures of Santa Claus, robins, Christmas puddings or reindeers stitched on the front. Often a hand-made Christmas present knitted by an elderly relative, these jumpers fell out of favour during the 90s and 00s. Seen more as a joke present, that period’s opinion of them is well reflected in the scene in Bridget Jones’s Diary when Bridget dismisses Mark Darcy for sporting a jumper with an enormous reindeer on the front.
Luckily we can now, if we want, express our Christmas spirits in less garish ways. There are tasteful winter jumpers aplenty that are festive in a more subtle way. Some jumpers are even stylishly decorated with small robin or reindeer patterns, if you still want a Christmas jumper of the more traditional variety. Cable knits, Fair Isle patterns, merino wool and cashmere jumpers can be worn all winter long and for Christmas can just be jazzed up with some sparkly earrings, a necklace and a Christmas cracker crown. A festive jumper is the perfect choice for both Christmas Day and Boxing Day as it will keep you warm and give you that extra bit of room to relax in after indulging in second helpings of Christmas dinner and pudding.

ARCHIVES
A PEEP INTO
THE KEEP
Take a trip back in time at The Keep and bring your own history to life. Christopher Whittick gives Robert Veitch the grand tour Entering The Keep at Falmer, one cannot help but walk in wonderment at the prospect of what lies within. My guide was Senior Archivist Christopher Whittick, who has worked at the East Sussex Record Office since 1977. As Christopher led me through the building he declared, “It’s currently the most up-to-date local record office in the UK.” But it wasn’t always like this. When the East Sussex Record Office first opened in 1949, it was at Pelham House in Lewes. And it was in Lewes, since 1981 at The Maltings, it would stay until 2003 when the National Archives declared that building to be unfit for storing archives. The tipping point came when the 900 yearold Battle Abbey Archives were offered to the Record Office. In 2007, five acres of land at Falmer were allocated for building. Six years and £15,000,000 later, the Queen opened The Keep on 31st October 2013. Both the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were very interested and interesting, Christopher assured me. The Keep has three partners;
East Sussex Record Office, University of Sussex Special Collections, and the Royal Pavilion and Museums. In total there are around 30 permanent and project staff and about 50 volunteers. The online catalogue contains 1.5 million documents, with this number increasing as more documents are digitally archived. A great deal of work at The Keep is spent extracting the contents, particularly names, from historical documents.
It’s currently the most up to date local record office in the UK The Keep is a living archive. The public can enter the Reference Room whenever it’s open, to study books and microfilm. Around 1,000 people do this each month. Between 250-300 visitors use the Reading Room each month, viewing over 1,000 documents between them. Documents vary from a single page to hundreds of pages. To see original documents in the Reading Room a reader’s
ticket is required. Mine took barely a couple of minutes to administer in a free and easy process. Just take two pieces of ID and be prepared to have your photo taken. Christopher mentioned that “homes and families, plus town and village histories are popular topics for study.” As well as local students and history groups, The Keep has welcomed visitors from far-flung outposts like Australia and New Zealand. Christopher’s own story began in Wolverhampton where his mother’s tales of heraldry, kings and queens influenced him. An interest in archaeology, then Egyptology, was followed by the allure of law, which he studied at Oxford. “I was seduced by legal history,” he said, adding with a wry smile “I have no history qualifications of any sort.” After further study at Liverpool University, Christopher qualified as an archivist in 1974. He told me, “Stints in Norwich and Cardiff preceded my arrival in Lewes,” and he’s been with the Record Office ever since. continued on page 76 SUSSEX LIVING December 2016

continued from page 75
Things have changed greatly in the last 30 years, notably with the way the archive is stored. The Keep became the fi rst Record Office to utilise barcodes as a way of managing, rather than just moving the archive. Despite having over six miles of documents, each can be located and retrieved swiftly. Christopher gave me a glimpse into one of three secure rooms in the Repository Block, an area not usually seen by the public. It is here that the archive is stored. Sensors are everywhere and this helps maintain a constant environment, something that’s as essential for safely storing those 12th century documents as it is for ensuring today’s documents can be studied in 3016. After Christopher wound back the racking system to

create a corridor, we strolled along a walkway then paused to chat. Looking to my right a relief model caught my eye. “Oh, that’s from Lewes in the 60s,” remarked Christopher. ‘It’s the Inner Relief Road… a frightening dual carriageway that was intended to plough through the centre of town.”
He continued, “Local opposition got it stopped in the end and all that was built was Phoenix Causeway. Eventually, it led to the Southern by-pass and the Cuilfail Tunnel.” With the clock winding down on our time, it had been a most entertaining and educational hour. Time with Christopher is well spent and the extent of his knowledge appears both prodigious and engrossing. I drove away wondering whether he should consider changing his name from Christopher Whittick, to Christopher Whittipedia.

are loans on offer such as funding for rural businesses, a £30 million boost for start up loans, a reduction in business rates for many companies and many free workshops and business events happening. It is well worth checking out the Business Associations in your area to see what your local business community is offering. West Sussex County Council’s core priorities are giving children the best start in life, helping support the local community and giving the elderly more independence. Here at Sussex Living Magazine we pride ourselves in supportingthe community and local businesses as much as possible with our sight and sound coverage – come in with us and you can enjoy promotion within our glossy pages, through our busy social media and across the airwaves too! Our magazine wouldn’t be what it is without the support of all our advertisers, readers, contributors and distribution points, so many thanks to each and every one of you. We do hope you continue to enjoy engaging with us, and hope to see you all in 2017, when we have many exciting features coming up, as well as all your favourite regulars.

Sussex Living Magazine distributes 17,000 copies through the Mid Sussex area every month of the year, and now we are reaching even further, into Lewes and Worthing as well. This is a fantastic part of the country to be based in, and is well worth celebrating! West Sussex covers an area of 768 square miles and stretches from Chichester, though Horsham, Crawley and right over to Haywards Heath and East Grinstead. On the south side it covers Arun, Worthing and Adur and reaches up to Burgess Hill. In 2013 it was estimated the population of West Sussex was 806,900, rising to 836,250 in 2015 and projected for the year 2024 at over 901,000! Being such a rural part of the country, it is unsurprising that an estimated 42% of people and more than half of all businesses are located in rural areas. The majority of the remaining population reside in the major towns of Chichester, Worthing, Crawley and Horsham. After the recent crash there has thankfully been a return to growth in the economy and business sector, and even better news for some Sussex companies is that there
