Editor’s COMMENT

Warm and sunny days have put a spring in my step this month – I just love the summertime (summer holidays help as well of course!). With the school holidays starting this month we have a super feature on kids’ activities from page 10. There will be no moans of “I’m boooard” with all these fun and exciting days out to keep your little ones entertained. And you never know, you parents might even enjoy a day go-karting as well! This July we are featuring a stunning Arts & Crafts mansion, Brook House (pages 23-28 have all the details). This residential property hails from humble beginnings as a hunting lodge, and has gradually been extended over the years by the Stephenson Clarke family. Lisa de Silva found the history fascinating as she was writing the piece, and I had the great pleasure of photographing the house and beautiful grounds – many thanks to our hosts. There have been some very fun summer events happening all over Mid Sussex recently, and there are loads more to come (p. 45). We all enjoyed the Village Street Party in Hurstpierpoint, which was a great success, and of course the St Lawrence Fair. Next month we have fairs galore in the magazine, so candy floss at the ready! Ruth Lawrence visited three lovely gardens in Cowfold this month for the NGS Open Gardens (p. 34). They are open on Sunday 31st July, and you can enjoy a sumptuous tea and cake in St Peter’s Church after your visit. Wishing all our readers and advertisers a happy, healthy and (fi ngers crossed) sunny July.

A favourite in the calendar, Light Up Hassocks is back again this year on the 25th November and they need your help – get involved and make it one to remember

SUSSEX LIVING July 2016

People have approached us with ideas for fundraising events that they can run – and we’re eager to hear more course, all of the various permits and permissions that we need to obtain (and all the signs etc. that have to be made to go with that). A few people have approached us with ideas for fundraising events that they can run – and we’re eager to hear more! The Hassocks Calendar is one of the keystones of our fundraising, and this will once

again be coming out in October. This year, it will come with its own envelope so you can send copies to former Hassocks residents to remind them what they’re missing! There are various practical ways in which you can help, apart from supporting the fundraising events: we’d like to run a Best Dressed Window Competition again this year if there’s someone who can coordinate it; we’d also like to involve the children with another Poster Competition – is that something you can help us with? Could you give us a hand organising Santa’s Grotto, either beforehand or on the day? Please email us with fundraising ideas or for more information on lightuphassocks@gmail.com Light Up Hassocks has been a way for our village to come together, and we look forward to working with everyone to make 2016’s event the best yet. For more details on Light Up Hassocks events, check our LightUpHassocks Facebook page or follow us on Twitter @lightuphassocks

It may seem odd to be reading about a Christmas fair at the start of July, but the Light Up Hassocks event on Friday 25th November will be upon us before we realise it. In fact the Light Up Hassocks committee has already had a couple of meetings since the open event in February, starting to sort out the logistics of the event that have to be put in place a long time ahead of the day itself. We are extremely pleased to announce that Hassocks Parish Council has very kindly taken on future responsibility for obtaining and putting up the lights (and taking them down!). However, that doesn’t mean that they are organising the event itself, and, as we saw last year when there was the possibility of it not happening, it’s something that a very large number of people enjoy. That means that the committee will now become the Light Up Hassocks Event Committee, focusing our attention on ensuring that everything goes smoothly, and, more importantly, safely on the evening of November 25th. We will still need to fundraise to cover the £3,500 or so that it costs to actually run the event: this includes the insurance cover; the professional marshals and first aiders; the hire of the stage and the sound system; the marching band’s fee; Same Sky, who provide the lanterns for the parade; and, of

Help is at hand for these prickly characters, as Ruth Lawrence explains how to make a feeding station and safe passage through our gardens

HOG WATCH Hedgehogs are declining at an alarming rate; do you remember how they were a relatively common sight three or four decades ago, trundling through gardens or spotted during an evening country stroll? The RSPB have published useful information on feeding and housing hogs that may be passing through your garden; these vulnerable creatures need all the aid they can get and you can begin helping them at any time of year, even when they are hibernating. The first stage is to make sure that hogs can get in and out of your garden. Check your boundaries and if you have hedges or wooden fences you can make doorways for hogs to enter and leave. Check with neighbours if it is their fence and with their permission you can cut one or two five inch square holes between your gardens at ground level, just large enough for hogs to pass through. Remember that cats may fit through the gap too,

8

S u ss e x L i v i n g July 2016

so again check that this is ok with your neighbour. To make a hog feeding station, find a plastic or wooden box with a removable lid, large enough for a hog but not a cat or fox and cut a five inch square in one side for a door. Finish the edges with a file or sandpaper so they are not sharp and line the box with newspaper and small

The best way to watch hedgehogs is very quietly at a distance while the sun is setting dry leaves such as birch, oak and hazel. Place a small dish of water inside and then decide upon the food you want to use. Suitable foods are sunflower hearts, dried mealworms, cooked potatoes, chopped unsalted nuts or minced meat. Crushed cat biscuits or wet cat or dog food (not beef or fish based) can be put out

but don’t leave out too much as leftovers can attract rats. Never use milk or bread for hedgehogs as they can’t digest them and it will give them an upset stomach. As the sun goes down, put the chosen food in a shallow dish and replace the box lid, weighting it with a couple of bricks to prevent a fox dragging it away. Clear away leftovers in the morning and refill the dishes every evening, but if you discover the food is uneaten or used by another creature, stop leaving the food out. With luck, you may be rewarded with a glimpse of these enchanting mammals; the best way to watch is very quietly at a distance while the sun is setting. Other ways to help hogs are to cover drains or deep holes, make sure there are exit routes out of ponds, check compost heaps before digging the fork in and move piles of rubbish to a new site before burning. Strimmers can cause potentially lethal injuries for hedgehogs so exercise great caution before cutting long grass as one could be resting among the stalks. Doing all these things will help create happy hogs for us to enjoy. www.rspb.org.uk/homes www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk

Kids’ Activities

by Lisa de Silva

School’s out, the holidays are stretching before us and it’s time to spoil the kids! Lisa de Silva has done the hard work for you, so all you have to do is read on, get inspired and have fun

It’s

Play Time! Gone are those halcyon days when children would dash out the door straight after breakfast, shouting a cheery, “I’ll be back in time for tea,” only to return eight hours later, ruddy cheeked and pleasantly tired from a day playing out with friends. Today, a combination of fears involving unspecified horrors and our young ones’ increasing addiction to screens, means the kind of Enid Blyton summers, complete with lashings of fresh air, new friends and ginger pop, are sadly no longer with us. Trying to respond creatively, gracefully and patiently, to that eternal question, “What are we going to do today?” is a challenge, so to help you out, here’s our summer activities guide to inspire you. While many of these activities will not be part and parcel of your usual routines, they are ways

10

S u ss e x L i v i n g July 2016

to treat your family to some special days out during the summer, enjoying time together and leaving you with some very happy memories. SPORTING ACTIVITIES It’s difficult to encourage our kids to be active, when we live in such a digital age, but getting out and burning off some energy can be both healthy and fun. Check out your local leisure centre for a whole host of sporting opportunities from swimming to tennis, to gymnastics or squash. As well as the chance to visit on an ad hoc basis, many leisure centres run specific holiday courses that might appeal.

For those with Lewis Hamilton ambitions, go-karting will guarantee an adrenalin filled afternoon at the track Water babies may also enjoy a visit to one of the many local activity centres specialising in sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and paddle sports. A two hour taster session is a good way to dip your toe in the water and if it appeals, there are ample opportunities to sign up for more formal training. Those preferring more land based activities like cycling are well catered for in Sussex at one of our wonderful country parks, where dedicated cycle trails can encourage even the most www.sussexliving.com

nervous of cyclists to build their confidence. Horse riding is also increasingly popular and even if your children do not already ride, many stables offer pony mornings during the holidays, where the children get to look after, groom and ride their ‘own’ pony. All stables cater for novice riders and an hour’s hack along the Downs can be a real treat to savour. Some of our local golf courses can also provide inspiration for an interesting morning or afternoon learning or practising your shots and for those with Lewis Hamilton ambitions, go-karting will guarantee an adrenalin filled afternoon at the track. PERFORMING ARTS Many performing arts, music and dance schools run summer programmes where your children can learn or improve their skills across a wide range of activities from acting, to singing, to dancing and story telling. Away from the academic pressures of the school year, it’s a great opportunity for children to experiment and try their hand at a range of activities.

Many stables offer pony mornings during the holidays, where children get to look after, groom and ride their ‘own’ pony FARMS, WETLANDS, AQUARIUMS & ZOOS For those children who love animals, trips to a local farm, wetland, aquarium or zoo,

THEME PARKS The summer holidays are also a great time for a day out at a theme park. Supermarket vouchers can often be used to make this a value for money day trip. The sheer joy of leaving the real world behind for a day and indulging in all the amusement and entertainment the parks have to offer, can feel like a mini holiday in itself. A trip to a theme park is pure unadulterated fun, so make sure to schedule one on your summer calendar.

brings endless delights of animal magic. Many of these venues have planned activities with an educational slant for those who enjoy that sort of thing and if not, feeding time is always a hoot. HISTORIC ATTRACTIONS & MUSEUMS If you want to add a cultural dimension over the summer holidays, why not visit a castle, historic house or local museum. Long gone are the days of ‘look but don’t touch’ with exhibits hidden behind dusty glass cabinets. Many of these places are now very hands on, with interactive displays, role playing guides and user friendly audio commentaries.

off the day with fish and chips on the beach. What’s more, a day at the seaside will tire even the most energetic of children. THEATRE TRIPS For a really special event during the holidays, why not book tickets to a show? Both our West End and regional theatres offer a wealth of variety and there’s something to suit all tastes and age groups. For young children used to viewing life through a screen, the intimate joys of the theatre can be a real treat. The lights, costumes and

THE SEASIDE As we are lucky enough to live by the coast, a day at the seaside is a brilliant activity during the holidays. Opening its freshly painted doors just last month, Community Coffee on Hurstpierpoint High Street is a café with a conscience, not to mention delicious food and drink

What do you get when you combine top-notch, locally sourced food with a business model that focuses on improving young people’s life chances and creating a hub for the local community? The answer: Community Coffee right in the heart of Hurstpierpoint High Street. Recently opened in June, Community Coffee is a ‘Social Enterprise’ café – a new breed of business that offers young people and those with learning disabilities a stepping-stone into the workplace and employment. Ian Jury owner of Community Café and Hurst resident explains further, “We employ young people who have found it hard to engage with education perhaps due to learning disabilities and who have been disenchanted with the world of work and the traditional routes into it. Our aim is to help those who prefer a more vocational style of learning become key members of the workforce and in turn build their confidence by helping them find their strengths”. And it works. Ian and his partner Richard Barker have four other thriving cafes and diners in London already, as well as

an event catering business that uses the social enterprise model with great success. “We focus on people’s abilities not disabilities. It’s amazing to see these young people’s confidence and self-esteem grow when they are given a chance. To see them succeed in the community as well as at high end catering

start and all served up in a chic and cosy interior. Using local produce, the café offers homebaked pastries and croissants for breakfast each morning and a lunch menu that consists of rustic homemade quiches and salad, fresh soups and bread, and jacket potatoes with a variety of fillings. Speciality teas from a nearby Sussex tea company and fair trade organic coffees are also firmly on the menu as well as child-friendly offerings and organic ice-creams. Ian and Richard plan to host regular OAP afternoons with tea and cakes and introduce a loyalty card for their customers in the near future. The cafe also gives all local traders a 10% discount on their coffee – community coffee indeed.

Our aim is to help those who prefer a more vocational style of learning become key members of the workforce events for corporate and public sector clients is just inspiring.” Ian’s background in both care and hospitality means he is well placed to combine the two in business and make them work. “I worked with children with special needs and challenging behaviour for five years and also trained as a chef in the hospitality industry. Food and care go remarkably well together, because catering is a great platform to get young people involved and see tangible results.” So what can we expect from Community Coffee in Hurstpierpoint? There’s lots of delicious food and drink for a

Sussex Living supports the local Mid Sussex community. Send us all your news and events, then read about them here. Dragon Boat Festival St Catherine’s Hospice is gearing up for their fourteenth Dragon Boat Festival and there’s still time for local businesses to sign up for one of the hospice’s busiest and biggest fundraisers. Taking place on Sunday 4th September from 10am to 4pm at Tilgate Park, the festival attracts thousands of spectators to cheer on teams as they race 40ft traditional Chinese Dragon Boats. St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival is a great branding, team building, and networking day out and many businesses return to take part year after year. Last year, a new record for fastest finishing time in thirteen years of Dragon Boats was created. Could it be your team setting a new record and lifting the prestigious trophy this summer? As well as being a fantastic chance for businesses to support

their local hospice, the Dragon Boat Festival is a fantastic day out on dry land with activities, entertainment and delicious food and drink. The Dragon Boat Festival is aiming to raise £50,000 for hospice care. Each day it costs St Catherine’s more than £17,000 to provide their care so every penny raised will have an impact. Sarah Achucarro, Corporate Development Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “It’s brilliant that so many local companies have already signed up to support this year’s Dragon Boat Festival. We love seeing teams from so many different industries but there’s still room for others to jump aboard!” To find out more about Dragon Boats, email Sarah Achucarro, on: sarahachuccaro@stch.org.uk, call: 01293 447357 or visit: www.stch.org.uk

Summer of Sport appeal Rockinghorse Children’s Charity is looking for supporters to get involved in their Summer of Sport appeal. The appeal is raising money to provide local young people suffering from mental health problems with leisure opportunities, to support their recovery and create positive experiences as part of their treatment. Following the fantastic success of a pilot scheme funded by Rockinghorse at Chalkhill Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit in Haywards Heath last year, Rockinghorse want to continue to provide funding for a range of therapeutic activities for young people aged 8-18 who are being cared for on the unit. Chalkhill is the only inpatient hospital for children

and young people in Sussex with complex mental health problems and research has shown that leisure activities are vital for recovery. The introduction of the Rockinghorse Activities Programme has allowed young people at Chalkhill to engage in activities such as horse riding, dancing and cookery classes, and facilitated a partnership with Plumpton College, which will specialise in education and training sessions. Supporters can help raise funds for the appeal by taking part in a sporting challenge. Find out more by visiting www. rockinghorse.org.uk/get-involved.

Sayers Common Community Shop We are now 2 years old! For most small villages the local shop is a vital lifeline and for some people, especially those without transport, it is an important connection with the world beyond their front door. It is a meeting place, communication centre and an important lynchpin of village life.

Let us do the thinking

The Sayers Common Community Shop, owned by the community and staffed entirely by volunteers was opened in April 2014. It has now been running for just over two years and is going from strength to strength and, because of this, there is always a need for more volunteer helpers. You don’t have to live in Sayers Common to be a volunteer, there are people from Albourne, Twineham and even Hurstpierpoint, helping with the running of the shop. Not all the volunteers have to work behind the counter. There are many jobs that need doing behind the scenes. If you have an hour or two to spare and would like to join the happy band that give their time to this valuable community asset, just pop into the shop any time and offer what time you can. At a public meeting in the Village Hall, in 2011, there was significant support for the setting up of a community shop. Following this meeting an Action Group was formed to progress the idea. One of the first steps of the Action Group was to survey

the village residents. Over 60% of the residents responded to this survey with 90% of these saying a community shop would be important to the village. Part of the remit of the shop is to help the community and to this end any surplus profits, after running costs and contingency funds for equipment replacement, are given back to the community in the form of cash grants. So far we have helped get a Defribillator installed outside the Village Hall and given grants to local groups, including the Sayers Common Boules Club and the local Scouts.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

We’ve gone up in the world! Present Company is a jewel of ethically traded gifts and homewares nestled on the upper level of The Market Place Shopping Centre in Burgess Hill. Come on up! Nearly 3 years ago, Burgess Hill’s favourite home and gift shop, Present Company, moved upstairs to its new home in the Market Place Shopping Centre. Next year will see Present Company’s 30th anniversary. We are still very much alive and trading and thank our loyal customers for their support over the years. Many of them recall our early days and recount fond memories of visiting us at our original store in Station Road. Our youngest fans visited with their parents and grandparents in tow. These children grew up with us and have gone on to have families of their own - we reckon we’re now onto our 4th generation of customers! We soon grew out of the tiny Station Road premises and, after a few years, relocated to a large store in the Martlets Centre. We’re often asked why we left our home of 20 years to move into a first floor unit in The Market Place Centre. We reply, only slightly tongue in cheek, that we’ve come here to reinvent ourselves for the challenges of the 21st century, as a growing proportion of our business now comes from the internet.

Many enthuse over our unusual ranges of goods from India and Southeast Asia, which we source ourselves However, for those who prefer to see our goods for real we still have our shop. Situated right in the centre of Burgess Hill close to Waitrose and Wilkinsons, we can be found upstairs above Greggs where we have a large, bright and airy premises full of our home and gift treasures.

It seems there are many different impressions of Present Company. People try to describe our store but soon come to realize that we defy description. We are known for our wide range of gifts, greetings cards, fragrances and toiletries. Many enthuse over our unusual ranges of goods from India and Southeast Asia which we source ourselves. And then there is our extensive and exclusive range of furniture and home accessories. So many items that you won’t fi nd anywhere else - and so fairly priced. And you really do get the personal touch with Present Company. For larger items we usually deliver locally ourselves… for free! But what we’re best known for is our friendly customer service. At the very heart of Present Company is our ethical policy. We believe that business should be fair, ethical and beneficial for all. We pay our taxes in the United Kingdom and we are a Living Wage Foundation employer. All of our imported goods are fairly traded. We are committed to minimizing Present Company’s environmental impact and we reuse materials whenever possible. And we financially support Elephant Family, a small charity dedicated to saving the Asian elephant. Come up and see us soon!

The Day

Sussex Died

Last month Robert Veitch recounted part 1 of the story of Boar’s Head. The troops went over the top, a fierce battle ensued and we left Nelson Carter writing one last letter home to his wife Kitty Nelson Victor Carter would be killed during the retreat, but not before capturing a German machine gun, providing covering fi re and then retrieving several wounded comrades from No Man’s Land. Nelson’s body is buried in the Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard in Laventie, some 5½ miles southwest of Armentieres. The attack was a disaster although military bosses viewed it as a success. Lasting barely five hours it had cost 366 lives, with over 1,000 wounded or taken prisoner. 70% were from Sussex, including 12 pairs of brothers. Most of the fallen were buried nearby. Mrs. Carter learnt of her husband’s fate in a letter dated 2nd July 1916… 2nd July 1916

Dear Mrs. Carter,

I am greatly grieved to inform you that your husband – Company – Sergeant – Major Carter was killed in action on the 30th June whilst gallantly performing his duty to King and Country… Your husband was a man beloved by all, a splendid soldier and it is a little consoling to know that He did his duty even to the last moment… May it somewhat help you to bear your burden to know that your husband’s

and machine gun fi re, he captured a machine gun slot and shot the gunner with his revolver. Finally, after carrying several wounded men into safety, he himself was mortally wounded, and died in a few minutes. His conduct throughout the day was magnificent. The irony of course is that by taking the German machine gun Nelson Victor Carter had killed a man in the process, wreaking upon that man’s family, the same grief his own family was also to endure. In 1986 Nelson’s only daughter, Jessie, went to visit her father’s grave for the fi rst time. She lived until 2001. The Royal Sussex Regiment was consolidated into other regiments in 1966 and the name disappeared. There is no memorial to the Battle of Boars Head in Sussex.

BROOK HOUSE The sun is shining as I turn into Brook House’s stately drive and my first view of this wonderful old house, glowing in the sunlight, is breathtaking. Located on the outskirts of Ardingly, today the house comprises 12 apartments and 17 communal acres and I’m there to meet with some of the residents, along with former owner, Eleni Stephenson Clarke, to help piece together the history of the house and its gardens. Minutes later, I am sitting on the terrace with my hosts, enjoying the view of the magnificent gardens and ponds, drinking tea with cake and listening to the whistle of the Bluebell Railway. The whole scene feels like we have gone back in time, enjoying an Edwardian moment from a bygone era. Stories and anecdotes come thick and fast and huge thanks to Sarah, Ian, Helen, Paul, John and Eleni for their help and enthusiasm in sharing their tales and showing me around. My hosts believe there was originally an old shooting lodge on the site which could be the dwelling mentioned in the will of yeoman, William Hamlin in 1741. In his will, Hamlin leaves, ‘messuage, farm &c.

Once branded a white elephant by its owner, the wonderful Arts & Crafts Brook House has been a refuge for wartime evacuees, a prisoner of war camp and possibly the site of the second Ashes test match. Greatly extended by the Stephenson Clarke family in the late 1800s, we take a closer look at the history of this impressive home and gardens (building, farm and others) called Brookhouse, in West Hoathly, to wife Anne for life, and after her death to Oliver Stidulph.’ Around 100 years later we start to find evidence of the Stephenson Clarkes visiting the area for shooting parties and in 1850, the family were recorded as guests at nearby Lyoth Farm.

Originally from Northumberland, the Stephenson Clarke family can be traced back to 1530, moving to North Shields 100 years later, where they developed a business as coal brokers, buying from the collier masters, then selling and shipping to coal merchants in London and the south coast ports. During the early half of the 19th century, the family made the move south to Tooting, London and as demand for coal from the gas companies and later the electricity companies soared, so did their business. By 1928, Stephenson Clarke was the largest distributor of British coal in the world, with a large fleet of ships and the biggest fleet of privately owned railway wagons in the country. Attracted by the location, and from before 1850 by the continued on page 24

shooting on oer, the family started to buy up land in the area and in 1877, bought the modest shooting lodge, Brook House, and the surrounding land initially using it as a country retreat for sport and not as his permanent residence until 1891. However, from 1879, Stephenson Clarke began to enlarge the house in a programme of works which saw the lodge rebuilt and over the following decade, the addition of the north wing. The period from 1880 to 1910 was the heyday of the Arts and Crafts movement and Brook House is a wonderful example of its architecture. Developed as a reaction to the excesses of Victorian industrialisation, the movement grew from a desire to return to simpler building forms using natural materials

and traditional craftsmanship sourced from the local area. Given this, it seems reasonable to speculate that Brook House was constructed from the clay tiles and terracotta bricks produced by the Keymer Brick and Tile Company, along with Wealden Sussex Sandstone, quarried in West Hoathly. As the movement discouraged the use of building machinery, homes were built using methods similar to those of Medieval and Tudor times, which means many Arts and Crafts houses share some of their features. This is reected in Brook House, which has the large feature chimneys and stone mullion windows popular in the 17th century. The

main construction of the house would have involved creating an oak framework, all cut by hand, which was infilled with brick. At Brook House this has been made into a feature, with the rendered gables celebrating the black and white timber framing that characterised the Tudor period. Whether the cricket pitch was already in existence when the renovations were taking place is unclear, but the pitch at Brook House is one of the oldest cricket grounds in Sussex. Legend has it that when the cricket pitch at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge was refurbished in 1906, Stephenson Clarke had it dug up and brought back to Brook House to be laid on his own pitch. What’s more, the first time the Australian cricket team came on tour to the UK in 1884, they played their second ever match on British soil at Brook House (the first being played just down the road), leading some to claim that the pitch was the site of the second ever Ashes test. Throughout the early years of the 20th century, the staff at Brook House would use the pitch to play against the staff of other

Stephenson Clarke died at the age of 66 years and his widow, Agnes Maria Clarke decided to leave London and move permanently to Brook House. The couple had fourteen children born between 1862 and 1891 and thirteen of them moved with her. However, their eldest son and heir, Stephenson Robert Clarke continued to buy land around Brook House and in 1893, purchased the Borde Hill Estate, which he made the family seat and his permanent home, going on to create the garden and arboretum. Given this, during the early years of the 20th century, Agnes added the southern wing and tower to accommodate them all. She also enlarged and improved the gardens and continued to live in the house until her death in 1921. It is likely that the house was converted into apartments for

The gardens were painted by Beatrice Parsons, one of the leading garden painters in Edwardian England extended family to both live in and visit for holidays, after her death. The Second World War brought more guests to Brook House, both prisoners of war and evacuees. and one in particular was a handy centre forward. There is also evidence of their stay on the front wall as you enter the main drive, where some of the POWs have carved their names and dates into the stone. Some of the current residents have embarked on a major clearing and restoration programme of the grounds and recently discovered the foundations of the Nissen huts used to accommodate the POWs, along with evidence of electricity and water connections. From their initial clearing work, there appear to have been four huts, three toilets and there is even evidence of their meals, with huge clumps of solidified cooking fat uncovered at the site. It was also during this time that Brook House became home to evacuees seeking refuge from London. This came to light a few years ago when an elderly gentleman turned up to revisit where he’d spent several years during the war. He recalled wonderful times and being well looked after and

even though the evacuees had to go to school and work, coming from London to live amidst the beauty of Brook House was a real treat. Although it wasn’t always plain sailing, as he related an incident involving a lagoon which used to be at the bottom of the hill between the house and Ardingly. Apparently, the family had brought a gondola over from Venice (which seems incredibly decadent), which was moored there and one day some of the evacuees opened the sluice

gates and all the water escaped, smashing the gondola onto the bank. Not surprisingly, those involved were grounded and given extra duties as punishment. Ralph’s death in 1970, bought the property from the Borde Hill Estate and moved back, making the north wing her home. During that time some of the flats were rented to private individuals and after her death in 1986, the family decided to sell all of the apartments, along with the freehold. With that, the Stephenson Clarke connection ended, although to be fair the family never made the house their main residence and Ralph’s son Robert, went as far as to call the building a ‘white elephant’. After the Second World War, there were even plans to knock down part of the extension as the extended families shrank in size and the house became too big to be practical.

One historical source of information about the house and gardens are the paintings that survive. In 1947, Colonel Sir Ralph Stephenson Clarke became joint Master of the Burstow Hunt, a position he held until his death and the beautiful teardrop drive at Brook House often played host to the hunt’s meets, which is the subject of a painting in Highbrook Village Hall. What’s more, the gardens were painted by Beatrice Parsons, one of the leading garden painters in Edwardian England. Eleni, who married Andrew Stephenson Clarke, Robert’s son, still has some of the original paintings at Borde Hill where the couple live and copies hang in the entrance hall of Brook House. These watercolours have been a particular inspiration to the

current residents in their quest to restore the grounds and it seems that restoring the garden is not only an ongoing labour of love, but also an exercise in garden archeology. Not only have the foundations for the Nissen huts been uncovered, but as the brambles and nettles have been cleared, a series of ten interconnected ponds have been revealed which help with drainage from the fields above the house. There are feature stone bridges, along with all the original Victorian clay pipes and drains and it’s clearly still in good working order, because since it’s been uncovered the garden has stopped flooding. The enthusiasm and love for the house of the current residents is clear from the moment I meet them and while it may have taken Brook House a while to have found its ‘family’ that is certainly not an issue any longer. As one resident said to me, “How could you ever leave here?”

HOME & GARDEN

BY LISA DE SILVA

Summertime and the living is easy? Well not always, as when temperatures soar your home can feel more like a greenhouse, than a cool and calming sanctuary. Luckily, expensive air conditioning units are not the only way to chill out this summer. So here are our top cooling tips for taking the heat out of your home during those scorching summer months. COVER UP The less heat entering our homes, the cooler we will be. So close windows and window coverings

in the morning before the day heats up and open in the evening to let the cooler air in. You can also reduce the heat gain from windows, roof lights and glass doors by applying solar control window fi lm, which can be brought cheaply and fitted easily, allowing the heat to be reflected away from your home. Interior and external shutters can also reduce heat gain, allowing you to control the level of heat entering the house. Once the air temperature has started to cool down, maximum ventilation can be achieved

by opening both low and high windows, as the low windows pull the cool air into the house and the higher windows release any hot air which has built up. To create cross ventilation open windows on opposite sides of the house for a through breeze. IN THE SHADE Smart shading can also help to keep you cool. Awnings on south and west facing windows can reduce heat gain and you could even improvise your own using strategically placed garden parasols. For a more permanent solution, a pergola attached to the house and covered with climbing plants gives a lovely dappled shade and offers some cooling respite in the heat of the day. Deciduous trees and shrubbery can also be planted to act as the ultimate sunblock, although you’ll need to be patient if landscaping from scratch. OUTSIDE COOKING Try not to cook inside as ovens give off huge amounts of heat and if your house is already too warm for comfort, adding an extra 200 degrees will not help. But on the upside, it’s a great excuse to get the BBQ out and brush up your grilling skills. What could be nicer than sitting outside as the www.sussexliving.com

positioning it at an angle in front of a large fan. This adds to the chill of the moving air. SWITCH OFF As electrical items along with general lighting both generate heat, turn off all appliances and lights when not in use. With appliances, it is recommended that you actually unplug any electronic equipment not in use as they can continue to generate heat even in the ‘off’ mode. Another tip is to change to LED lighting, which can keep you cooler and save you money on your electricity bills, as incandescent bulbs waste up to 90% of their energy in wasted heat.

heat of the day cools, relaxing with a long iced drink, with dinner warming on the grill. COOL BREEZE If you decide to use a portable fan, it’s wise to remember that fans cool people and not spaces, so be sure to position it so you are in the path of the moving air and don’t leave one running in an unoccupied room. The air motion over human skin helps to evaporate sweat, whisking away body heat and reducing temperature. Another tip is to create your own air conditioning unit, by filling a mixing bowl with ice, or a frozen ice pack and

temperature starts to drop, close off any rooms you are not using, so the cooler air isn’t wasted chilling vacant areas of the house. It’s also a good idea to wear cotton or other natural fabrics like linen or silk, which allow your body to breathe. Swap any heavy bedding for cotton sheets and during really hot spells, fill a hot water bottle, place in the freezer and leave it in your bed to help cool you down at night.

Only use the dishwasher, washing machine and iron during the coolest part of the day LIVING COOL Try to ensure you only use the dishwasher, washing machine and iron during the coolest part of the day and once the

OPEN GARDENS

BY RUTH LAWRENCE

Make a grand day out at Cowfold Open Gardens on Sunday 31st July where you will be able to visit three beautiful gardens and have tea in ancient St Peter’s Church

Cowfold Gardens

34

SUSSEX LIVING July 2016

The last day of July will welcome three contrasting open gardens in Cowfold along with the chance to visit the fascinating 13th century St Peters Church, where home-made teas will be served. Wendy and Don Fuller started their garden at 5 Alley Groves just three years ago; they brought an entire truck full of plants from their previous home and let the garden evolve, focusing on colour and variety. There are plenty of geraniums and about thirty clematis, most of which should be in bloom for the open day. Don’s favourite plant is the useful evergreen fi ller, Heuchera which provides plenty of contrasting colour throughout the year. A large Californian Lilac with stunning blue flowers, forest pansy, mock orange and acers are other fi rm favourites, for, as Don commented, “Gardens are for the owner”. Visitors will be able to share in the garden’s bounty as there will be around 200 plants for sale, including foxgloves, delphiniums, hostas and lupins. Mature oaks overlook this garden and as a result Don and Wendy have many songbirds visiting including wrens, tits, nuthatch, thrushes and blackbirds. It’s a peaceful, compact garden and Don, who used to work in horticulture, will be on hand to offer advice during the open afternoon. Coopers Cottage is a long, 1/3acre garden tended by Judy and Geoff Penhaligon who began planting five years ago. “The borders kept getting bigger and the lawn became smaller,” said Judy as she showed me the contrasting areas of the garden, which open up different views. There is a strong watery theme including a newt inhabited pond, a ditch and a stream running at the garden’s lower border. “We plant with wildlife in mind by growing flowers for bees and insects,” said Judy, adding that she has learned

www.sussexliving.com

which plants rabbits tend to avoid as they have a large population. She likes ferns, which rabbits ignore, grasses and primulas, but her favourites are hydrangeas and hellebores. “I try and let things seed,” she commented. “I don’t mind weeds such as honesty and thistle, I find that nature looks after itself.” With a woodland area, the garden gets plenty of wildlife including pheasants, foxes and the occasional mink. A stumpery makes an unusual feature, providing homes for various insects while lending a sculptural quality to one area of the garden.

Judy tends to “borrow the landscape” by utilising the natural stream and hedges that border one side of the garden from an adjacent field, providing a show of wild roses. Judy will be giving advice on the day; her hard won knowledge of which plants rabbits tend to avoid will be invaluable to those with a similar problem. The garden has an enchanting quality about it that encourages exploration; the gently curving pathways that lead the visitor through different zones, the borrowing of natural features and the hidden surprises that lure eye and imagination. There will be plants for sale here too; all proceeds from plant and tea sales during the day will go to St Peters Church in Cowfold. Eileen and David Precious have a productive, relaxed garden at the rear of 8 Thornden with well-established

formal topiary in the front garden. The couple cultivate for year round interest; their greenhouse includes a vine and they grow their own vegetables and have recently taken on some chickens. St Peters Church, founded in 1232 has a wealth of history; it houses a life size brass of Thomas Nelond, Prior of the great 15th century monastery at Lewes and an impressive array of stained glass dating from the 1860s.

GARDENING

BY FLO WHITAKER

Turn your wilting July boarders into an abundance of blooms – just grab your sharpest shears and get doing the Hampton Hack

Doing the

Hampton Hack If July was a person, you would say she suffered from anger management issues and low self-esteem. She is a troublesome child. July is the furious ugly sister to her serene siblings, May and June. July desperately wants to be like them but knows she cannot. May and June dance about in party frocks made from roses, poppies and peonies. At her worst, July can only offer faded blooms, dusty foliage, black spot, mildew and rust. The ‘Chelsea Chop’ is a clever pruning trick designed to extend the flowering season of herbaceous plants. It’s done around the time of the Chelsea Flower Show in May - hence the name. Timing is critical, so it’s too late for this year, but you can rejuvenate parched and tired July borders now by employing the ‘Hampton Hack’- a method that coincides, (surprise, surprise) with the Hampton Court Flower Show. In spring, many plants grow away at an extraordinary rate, then flop, exhausted and unable to support themselves. We tolerate this while there are flowers on show, but the moment the display fades, we are left

with a collapsing chaos. Worse still, the once pristine foliage is now looking distinctly tatty. Disheartened? Don’t be. Arm yourself with sharp shears and secateurs and do the Hampton Hack. Keep deadheading your roses – the more you deadhead, the more new blooms you’ll get. After they’ve finished flowering, chop lupins and delphiniums down to about 30 cms in height and apply a mulch and a generous drink of water. They’ll start into growth again and may produce additional flowers in August.

The flowers will be smaller than before and on shorter stems, but, who cares? Even if no flowers are forthcoming, you’ll have smart new foliage to look at instead of a yellowing mess. Herbaceous geraniums respond brilliantly to a severe haircut. Sheer off the leaves to about 10 cms in height, add the magic mulch and water combination and they’ll spring back into growth, making lots more flowers. Clumps of autumn-flowering phlox, sedum and helenium can be judiciously pruned now. Hold your nerve and cut a third of the stems down by 50%. These cut stems will have their flowering delayed by a month or more, stretching the display well into October, possibly November. Be sure to catch alchemilla and euphorbia before they set seed all over the place. I love alchemilla so much and used to think you can’t have enough; reader, you can. They can be cut down almost to ground level, (take care - euphorbia sap is nasty stuff, so wear gloves) and they’ll soon kick into vibrant new growth. July will always be a jealous sister, but, with your help, she can still go to the ball.

Keep deadheading your roses – the more you deadhead, the more new blooms you’ll get

A useful guide into understanding the wonderful benefits of owning a home in the glorious Sussex commuter belt, a perfect location in which to live and invest

SUSSEX

COMMUTER BELT The breathtaking South Downs National Park (628 sq miles) became fully operational in 2011, and stretches throughout the counties of east and west Sussex providing huge swathes of breathtaking, unspoilt, open countryside. With access to stunning beaches, historic towns and quaint villages, together with superb road and rail networks providing exceptional commuter facilities, the Sussex counties are a jewel in the crown of the Home Counties.

LOOKING FOR AN INVESTMENT PROPERTY IN SUSSEX?

Latest figures from the Land Registry* show an annual change in house price of 9.4% for East Sussex and 9.3% for West Sussex. Evaluated against London which shows an annual change of 13.9%, the South East region shows a healthy 10.3% which makes Sussex a good long term investment. If you are giving up life in the metropolis you need to be sure that

country living suits you. Ensure that you have within easy access the services which are important, such as nearby shops, a choice of good restaurants, a village pub or good schools for the children. You need to calculate the cost of petrol or a season rail ticket together with station parking. Consider the length of time of the train journey and factor in the time/cost taken to get to the station.

With access to stunning beaches, historic towns and quaint villages, the Sussex counties are a jewel in the crown of the Home Counties COST OF HOMES IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO A COMMUTER STATION OR MOTORWAY

Homes invariably cost more if they are within walking distance of a rail station or offer easy motorway access, however, it is possible to fi nd an attractive home say, 10-15 minutes drive out of the suburban hub which offers you a good sized garden and value for money.

GLORIOUS SUSSEX

The commuter belt for the region includes major towns such as Haywards Heath, Horsham, Burgess Hill

and Lewes and beautiful country villages and hamlets, many with the quintessential village green, cricket pitch, pub and parish church. The area abounds with numerous sports facilities and golf courses, theatres, cinemas, historic buildings and museums.

TRAVEL TIME TO LONDON

Haywards Heath is a prime commuter hub with a journey time to Victoria of 44 minutes. Horsham is another much sought after location particularly as property prices are lower than in nearby Surrey. The journey time is 56 minutes to Victoria. Dotted throughout the region are local commuter stations with many stations providing access to London Bridge. The M23 and A23 provide excellent road links stretching from Brighton to Gatwick and the M25. The A27 and A272 link east and west. * Land registry https://www.gov.uk/ government/uploads/system/uploads/ attachment_data/file/511386/Land-RegistryMarch-HPI-2016.pdf www.sussexliving.com

Strut your stuff in oversized frames and retro round glasses this summer in a throwback to the 60s and 70s Sunglasses are an essential accessory in the glorious sunshine as they not only protect your eyes from those harmful UV rays but provide you with the perfect finishing touch to your look. This summer we pay homage to the 60s and 70s style sunglasses which have made a tremendous comeback. The hippie years were a real turning point for sunnies, as new developments in producing plastic lenses made it much easier to make lightweight designs. The shape and size of frames also evolved dramatically. The well-known tinted lensed round hippie glasses were made famous by some of the most iconic rockers of the 60s; John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin regularly sported these accessories, so they became a must-have for the flower

power generation. Over on the disco dance floor, the oversized square retro frames ruled the party scene and were mostly found in shades of gold and bronze with gradient-tinted lenses. Today, to spice up the summer months, round hippie glasses and oversized retro frames are very much back in the game! Designers have given the tinted lenses a miss and have made sure to bring these designs into the modern day by making them chic and chunky. These full-rim round frames and fantastically oversized retro frames will add a touch of 70s disco to your wardrobe and turn you straight into a boho beach goddess on those sweltering summer days. Look no further – peace, love and sunglasses will make you rock the hippie look all summer long! www.sussexliving.com

With shouldergrazing earrings, statement chokers and newage headpieces, make sure you are adorned this summer Jewellery usually comes as an afterthought – when you’ve already chosen your outfit, you just opt for that trusty necklace or pair of earrings that look good with everything. This summer, however, welcomes such exciting new additions to the jewellery range that it is well worth switching your routine up a bit to try them out! So rather than putting outfits first, why not give jewellery a bit of attention? Put those plain studs and tired necklaces back in the jewellery box for the summer and ready yourself with some of these fantastic pieces instead. Shoulder-grazing earrings not only make your neck look longer and more feminine, they’re also one of the easiest new season styles to try at home before launching head first into the jewellery craze. Mismatch these earrings for a great look – just get hold of two pairs that clash slightly but still complement each other. You can make a statement with generously sized earrings by pairing them with your new Bardot neckline and shoulder silhouette tops – the mesmerising swaying motion of long earrings ensures that your overall look gets all the

IMPRESS attention it deserves. This festival season, ditch the flower crown and replace it with a new-age headpiece instead: hair jewellery adds a really summery vibe to your outfit and is something you can have a lot of fun with.

If you want to add an extra edge to your look, alongside jewelled, delicately feminine tiaras, there are also grungeinspired collections that are perfect for a fun evening out. Urban warrior styles or ornate headbands are perfect for a BBQ on the beach with family and friends. Chic chokers are the must-have necklace style of the summer. If the tattoo inspired choker of the 90s is what

springs to mind – think again: this season’s chokers are heavy, oversized necklaces in all shapes and sizes. Ranging from glorious metallic pieces made of chunky gold chains (reimagined into wavy chokers and close fitting necklaces) to ones constructed of pearls that have overthrown any prim and proper associations and are instead arranged in multiple layers draped choker-style around the neck. Bold brooches that come in quirky colours, textures, patterns and prints are a great way to brighten up your work outfit. Pin one on the neck of a high buttonedup shirt to make an elegant and exciting statement and your look is instantly transformed. There’s no denying that summer is the best season to showcase your jewellery, with less clothes to have to layer up, it’s easy to draw attention to these complementing accessories. Now all that’s left to do is to have fun trying out all the new and enticing jewellery styles! www.sussexliving.com

Happy, Healthy

Holidays! Body Buzz To keep you feeling fit and fantastic

while on your holidays, a few gentle exercises are just the ticket. Sasha Kanal explains how July is the time when our thoughts traditionally turn to summer holidays. Wherever your destination, there’s no excuse not to keep (relatively!) active when away, whilst simultaneously reaping the benefits of being in a relaxed and unhurried state of mind. It also means any hard work put in prior to your break doesn’t go to waste. IN TRANSIT The journey itself is a good place to start. Long or short haul flights, lengthy ferry and car journeys are stretches of time that can be filled and utilized to your advantage. Sitting down doesn’t always mean sitting still: exercises to strengthen the gluteus maximus (buttock muscles) are a brilliant way to get your body moving, albeit discreetly. ‘Butt crunches’ or ‘squeezes’ can be done with minimal fuss – perfect for long, seated journeys. Aim for ten squeezes to start with, holding them for about 30 seconds each if you can. No one will know. Need I say more? Chair dips can help to tone your core and arms and are another great option for sedentary journeys. They really work on planes (I have tried these out myself and they were a total godsend for restless legs and a numb posterior). Just make sure the chairs are strong enough

local pavements. For those who prefer a more sedate (and sometimes equally effective) approach, hiking or walking in your new found environs are the perfect way to get moving and shake off some of that travel lethargy. The city break is where this method comes into its own. In fact, there’s an art to it. Getting lost in an old town and stumbling across some local gems (all whilst having burned a couple of hundred calories along the way), is surely one of life’s great pleasures? Another obvious fitness option is swimming in the hotel or villa pool. Repetition is key

to bear your body weight. Place your hands, palm down on the seat either side of your hips, engage your tummy muscles, then press down to raise your body off the chair until your arms are straight. Repeat for 30 seconds or so. ON LOCATION You’ve arrived at your destination and this is where the fun begins. Let’s start with good old-fashioned running. Sling on those trusty trainers and get out exploring. I’ve discovered the backstreets of San Francisco and the dusty lanes of the Languedoc alike, all whilst pounding the

here – get a good few lengths under your belt daily to really see some benefits. Or check out what your resort or surrounding area has to offer in the way of activities, such as tai chi, watersports or even horse riding.

Hiking or walking in your new found environs are the perfect way to get moving and shake off some of that travel lethargy This opens up so many worlds of movement and the chance to try something new – variety is the spice of life after all and can help you avoid getting stuck in a rut when it comes to fitness. But most importantly, remind yourself that holidays are all about rejuvenation too. So take it easy, do things in your own time and above all, enjoy. Caution: If you are unsure of any new exercise regime please consult your GP before commencing.

Cambodia Challenge! A local Mum wanting to fundraise for Chestnut Tree House is taking on the trip of a lifetime – a trek through Cambodia! Help her raise funds in memory of her son Local resident Sarah Collier lives with her daughter Becky, 20, and son Matthew, 18. She has signed up to complete a 9 day trek in Cambodia in November 2017 for Chestnut Tree House, the children’s hospice for Sussex and South East Hampshire. Sarah is taking on this personal challenge in memory of her son James who passed away at Chestnut Tree House in July 2011, just 10 days before his 12th birthday. Sarah has already smashed her original fundraising target of £3,000 and is hoping to continue raising even more in the run up to the trek. James was sadly diagnosed with a brain tumour in April 2010. Mum Sarah said, “I really can’t fault the care James received from the day he fell ill. The Chestnut Tree House Community Nurses visited our

home towards the end of James’ life, and two and a half weeks before he passed away we were able to move into the House as a family. During this time of great sadness, being at Chestnut Tree House allowed us to feel so safe and supported.” Sarah’s other children Becky and Matthew also received a great deal of support and Sarah feels that Chestnut Tree House helped them to have closure after losing James. “The bereavement services at the House gave us a real sense of having the choice, freedom and time to really say goodbye to James in our individual way,” said Sarah. “We still visit the House today and still feel very much a part of the Chestnut family. This sense of belonging has been invaluable

The Cambodia Challenge will be a very special way to remember my son in his 18th year to me and my children. I often visit the Reflections room or the beautiful gardens. Staff still remember us, and I have such a sense of peace and warmth whenever I go there. During their stay with James at the House, Sarah remembers that nothing was ever too much trouble for the staff, from a compassionate and listening ear at 3am, to a delicious snack

prepared by the wonderful kitchen staff. After James died the family did some fundraising through Worthing Rugby Club. “It was a lovely occasion,” Sarah said. “My daughter made and sold friendship bracelets and we did some fundraising activities. I have always wanted to do something big for Chestnut Tree House to say thank you. When I heard about the Cambodia Challenge it felt the right time for me.” As a Mum Sarah is often putting others fi rst, but this challenge is going to be just for her and will be a very special way to remember her son in his 18th year. “I can never repay the care and support that Chestnut Tree House provided to my family,” said Sarah, “but I hope that the funds I raise will help this amazing charity to continue to support children and families in need for years to come.” To dontate visit www.justgiving. com/fundraising/JamesWilliam-Collier or if you would like to join Sarah to take on Chestnut’s Cambodia Challenge, please visit www.chestnut-treehouse.org.uk/cambodia or call 01903 706354 to speak to a member of our Events Team. www.sussexliving.com

North Chailey

Walk

Enjoy this lovely 5 mile walk in North Chailey, taking in many different types of landscape along the way This 5 mile walk starts from Red House Common car park on Chailey Common, which is situated off Warrs Hill Road (Warrs Hill Lane on O/S maps!) off the A275. The walk includes woodland, field and riverside paths and two short stretches of Red House Common. The walk takes you close to the Bluebell Railway. From the southern edge of the car park, go through a barrier and follow the obvious path parallel with Warrs Hill Road. At the bottom left hand corner, go through a gate and turn right down the road to the A275. Cross the A275 and take the signed tarmac track to Grassington Farm. The track passes between buildings, and at a pair of gates side step to your right, and go through a pedestrian gate. Follow the track downhill through a chicken farm, and at the bottom, go over a stream then left on a signed path with houses on your right. The path bears

right to go through a barrier and at a signpost go left through a gate beside a chalet bungalow. Pass through a stabling area and go through a pair of gates and follow a fenced path towards distant farm buildings. Note the letters GMT on the footpath sign. This denotes that you are on the Greenwich Meridian Trail which is a 275 mile long-distance walk from Peacehaven in East Sussex to Sand le Mere in East Yorkshire, following the line of the Prime Meridian.

local walk

At the farm buildings, turn left on a signed bridleway. Follow this attractive bridleway for just over ½ mile to the North Chailey-to-Fletching road. Turn right along this road for a similar distance, and just past the road junction, walk a few yards along Mill Lane, and take a signed path on your left between two houses. Follow this path downhill through Rotherfield Wood, ignoring all turnings off to your left and right. At the bottom of the wood, bear left through a boggy area and go over a stile. The route ahead is through low lying meadows close to the River Ouse. The path is a little indistinct in places. After the second gate, veer slightly away from the wood and go through the right of two gates to a stile and a flight of steps to the A275 at Sheffield Bridge. Opposite is the entrance to Sheffield Park Station which is the southern terminus of the Bluebell Railway. If not visiting this attraction turn left along the A275 and just past the entrance to the Bluebell Business Estate, cross the road, go up a bank, then left to walk parallel with the road. On reaching a surfaced track, turn right and follow this to Wapsbourne Farm. Turn left in front of the main house then left by a static caravan and right to join a wide track which becomes continued on page 56

an attractive tree lined avenue. Ignore the path off to your left. At the end of the track, go through a gate and walk alongside a wood aiming for the right hand corner of protruding wood to your right. Walk alongside Warr’s Wood and ignore crossing paths to a stile at the end of the wood. Go over this and follow a track uphill to Banks Road. Turn right along this road and at the road junction, go left uphill. Opposite the road, New Heritage Way, turn right onto a track signed to Broadwater House. Almost immediately, turn left through a gate and walk parallel with the road to the car park at the start of the walk. We are very grateful to Les Campbell for bringing us new and exciting local walks every month. A founder member and former Chairman of the Mid Sussex Ramblers, he is a very experienced and enthusiastic walker indeed. Les insists on testing all routes personally, making sure they are suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. Let’s Eat...

BBQ Belly Pork With light and warm evenings, it’s classic BBQ time. As a family we love to get the barbie out – Matt’s on the meat and me and the kids are on the salads.
This dish has an American style which makes a nice change to the conventional British BBQ and adds a bit of a twist. And it’s very yummy too, clean plates guaranteed!
 SERVES 6

For the pork

12 belly pork chops
For the marinade 2 tbsp soy sauce 3 cloves of garlic, roughly chopped
 Juice of half an orange
 1 tbsp honey
1 tsp five spice 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp BBQ sauce
 Salt & pepper
2 spring onions, sliced for garnish

For the mac ’n’ cheese

700g pasta of your choice 350g cheddar cheese, grated
50g parmesan cheese, grated 2 tbsp whole grain or Dijon mustard 2 pints milk
2 tbsp plain flour Large knob butter
 Pepper

58

S u ss e x L i v i n g July 2016

PREP TIME 24 hrs

COOK TIME 1

hour

For the purple apple slaw 1/2 red cabbage, sliced 1/2 red onion, sliced 2 green apples, cubed
2 tbsp mayonnaise Salt & pepper

1. The day before or in the morning put all the marinade ingredients into a large bowl or tray along with the pork belly, cover and place in the fridge to marinate. 2. On a medium high heat in a large saucepan start to make a roux with butter and flour. Stirring into a firm paste, slowly start adding the milk a little at a time, making sure you stir all the lumps out each time and continue until you have a thick sauce. Add most of the cheddar and half the parmesan, stir in the mustard. The trick to cheese sauce is to never stop stirring! 3. Cook the pasta for 10 minute or until cooked but not overdone. Leave to

drain and cool. Mix the cooled pasta into the cheese sauce, transfer into a large ovenproof dish and sprinkle on the remainder of the cheese. Put under the grill for 5/10 minutes or until golden and crispy.
 4. On the BBQ, place your belly pork, turning occasionally and basting until cooked. Scatter the spring onions over to garnish.
Meanwhile, place the sliced red cabbage, onion and apple into a large serving dish, stir in the mayonnaise and pepper and mix together well.

Picnic perfect Swiss roll is loved by everyone and loathed by none. I fi ll mine with vanilla buttercream, but any jam, buttercream or whipped cream works well. It may take a couple of goes to get a perfectly tight roll, but hey – it will never go to waste as it’s delicious however it’s served!

INGREDIENTS 4 medium eggs 100g caster sugar 100g gluten free self-raising flour Filling 5 tbsp jam, raspberry, strawberry or apricot Buttercream or fresh whipped cream 1. Preheat oven to 220C, gas mark 7. Grease and line with baking paper a 13x9 inch Swiss roll tin. Whisk eggs and sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy and the whisk leaves a trail. 2. Sift the flour into the mixture and carefully fold in. Do not over mix as it will knock the air out. 3. Pour the mix into the prepared tin and spread evenly into all the corners. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until the sponge is golden brown and begins to shrink from the

60

edges of the tin. 5. Meanwhile, place a piece of baking paper slightly bigger than the cake onto the work surface and sprinkle with caster sugar. 6. Invert the cooked cake onto the sugared baking paper. Working quickly, loose the paper on the cake and peel it off. Trim the edges with a sharp knife and mark a score 1 inch from the shorter edge of the cake, being careful not to cut through. 7. Using the score to start, roll the Swiss roll tightly still with the baking paper attached and leave to cool. 8. Carefully unroll the cake and spread with your chosen filling, leaving half an inch from the edge of the cake, then gently re-roll. Top Tip: Only score, don’t cut the sponge before rolling it and make sure it’s rolled while hot!

Call us for details

Super fruit Served with cream, dipped in chocolate, sprinkled with sugar or a grind of black pepper, however you like your strawberries now is the time to enjoy them One thing a strawberry will never be is a berry. Berries have seeds on the inside. Strawberries have seeds, which are actually ovaries of the flower, on the outside. They’re what are known as, an aggregate accessory fruit, and a good fruit at that, high in Vitamin C and manganese. It was the French who developed the Garden Strawberry that’s most common today. They did this in Brittany, late in the 18th century, through selective cultivation and crossbreeding of the Virginia and Chilean strawberry plants. The fruit the French produced was larger and more succulent than our native wild strawberry. Before long the wild strawberry was relegated to second fiddle, although it remains a joy to find them alongside gravel footpaths, on embankments and in garden rockeries. Once picked no strawberry will ripen further so they’re best

eaten within a couple of days, waved under a tap just before use. At this time of year strawberries and cream is a popular dessert and credit for this goes to Thomas Wolsey who created it for Henry VIII. During the Wimbledon fortnight, over 28,000kg are served up at a rate of 8,600 punnets a day, each of which will set you back around £2.50 for ten of the best and a generous dollop of cream. Strawberries also came to be associated with ice cream, jam, milkshakes, smoothies and yoghurts. The miscellany goes on and who can resist strawberries in a flan, a trifle, Eton mess, pavlova or cheesecake. These days they’re also popular dipped in chocolate and can even be glazed, skewered with marshmallows and served as kebabs. May there be fields of strawberries forever, which written more astutely might be - Let It Be, Strawberry Fields Forever.

BY KENNETH AVERILL

This July East Grinstead Town Twinning Association celebrates its 50th Anniversary, and they have many exciting activities planned…

“We are celebrating our 50th Anniversary over the weekend of 22-25th July and are eagerly looking forward to the delegations and youth groups arriving in East Grinstead from all our twin towns,” says Ken Averill, Chairman of the East Grinstead Town Twinning Association. The fi rst known “twinning” was in 1920 just after the First World War and was instigated by a British soldier returning from Northern France. Today there are more than 1,700 twinnings, emphasising the continued and growing desire to broaden mutual understanding of the cultural, recreational, educational and commercial activities of our continental neighbours. The East Grinstead Association was formed in 1962, twinning officially with the town of Bourg-de-Peage in France in 1966. Over the years Mindelheim (Germany), Sant Feliu de Guixols (Spain), Schwaz (Austria) and Verbania (Italy) have joined the group. On 26th August 1985

such was the appreciation and recognition of the work carried out by the Association that it was honoured by the presentation of the European flag by MEP from Belgium In 1976 East Grinstead introduced “It’s a Knockout”, now known as “Youth in Europe”, and the event has subsequently been held every year in turn in each of the six towns, with teams of youngsters from each town. Over the years East Grinstead’s teams have involved more than 500 young people, many of whom still have happy memories of the experience. In addition many more friendships have lasted from school exchanges, musical events, sports club exchanges, etc. Our current activities include work experience for local students, and e.communication between primary schools in the twin towns. “We have a busy schedule for our guests,” added Ken, “and as the theme for the youngsters this year is ‘Conservation and the

MUSIC

BY ROBERT VEITCH

The

Heart of the Band Paul Homewood has been marching with the beat of the Mid Sussex Brass Band and its predesessors since 1969, who this year celebrate their 30th Anniversary with a special concert

When I sat down recently with Paul Homewood from the Mid Sussex Brass Band, a long and winding musical odyssey was revealed before my eyes and ears. Late in the 19th century the fi rst brass bands emerged in the Mid Sussex area. The Brotherhood Band was formed in Haywards Heath, reforming in 1922 after the Great War as the Haywards Heath Town Prize Silver Band. A few miles away in 1932, the Burgess Hill Brass Band was born. Both bands were successful, although membership ebbed and flowed over the decades with changing times and fashions. Paul learnt to play trombone at Warden Park Academy, although when he was a pupil it was still the newly built Cuckfield County Secondary School. He recalls, “I loved listening to military bands, along with the top brass bands.” After leaving school Paul became a postman but in 1969 fate changed his musical life. Lawrence Burtenshaw, Band Secretary at the time, lived on Paul’s round and had a letter published in a local newspaper appealing for players. Paul bumped into him in his front garden and applied, while handing over the post.

Paul looks back fondly to when Sir Vivian Dunn spent a short time conducting the band Paul was invited to practice the following Wednesday and turned up nervously, borrowed a trombone, but needn’t have worried. Four days later he was marching in the Remembrance Sunday parade; “Left foot forward to the beat of the drum” he was told, “And play what you know, then mime the rest” he remembers with a smile. While other players looked resplendent in their natty uniforms, Paul “had nothing but a Mac with a bright blue lining” flung over his regular clothes. But as it poured with rain that day, he ended up driest of all and smitten with the experience. In 1978 Paul became Secretary and the band changed its name to Haywards Heath Town Band. In 1986 with

dwindling numbers, a decision was taken to merge with the Burgess Hill Brass Band. It proved a good decision and just three years later they qualified for the National Brass Band Championship. These days, along with Paul, there are still a few musicians from one or other parent bands still playing. Paul is passionate about the Mid Sussex Brass Band and it shines through in all he says, with tale after tale cheerfully cascading from his memory like the Floral Dance melody flows from the stave in a bubbling torrent of notes. Having been Secretary of the Mid Sussex Brass Band since 2001 Paul can recall a thing or two, “It’s always good to get to know the wives of fellow musicians,” he says, “as it’s often the wives that allow their husbands to come out and play.” He looks back fondly to when Sir Vivian Dunn spent a short time conducting the band. He also recalls the times that Howard Blake, OBE, of Snowman fame would travel from his Highbridge Mill home on the A272 to sit in on rehearsals. The band currently rehearses on Thursdays at Manor Field Primary School in Burgess Hill. New members are warmly welcomed and rehearsal costs £1.75 a week. The band also loans

Paul’s own trombone has a fabulous much loved golden glow about it, despite looking well weathered and well used instruments to new players, which is a good way to learn. “Our band is quite a family affair,” Paul says. “Children of some senior members play in the Youth Band.” The days of the band being an all male institution are now long gone, it’s egalitarian now. Paul told me that a decent secondhand tuba can cost £4,000 or more, whilst a new top notch cornet can cost over £1,000. Paul’s own trombone has a fabulous much loved golden glow about it, despite looking well weathered and well used. This year the Mid Sussex Brass Band reaches a milestone and turns thirty. A 30th Anniversary concert is scheduled for July 16th at St Andrew’s Church in Junction Road, Burgess Hill. There will be performances from the Youth and Senior sections of the band. In addition there will be a frieze of historic photographs to whet the appetite of the audience, prior to the show. It’s hoped that former band members will put in an appearance, and that some of them will dust off their instruments and join in. The show will also be open to the public and tickets can be purchased via the band website. With 47 years on the clock, Paul’s enthusiasm remains bold as brass for all things brass. Our conversation over, he trooped off, back to the Land of Hope and Glory with a spring in his stride and a tune in his head. Visit www.msbb.net for more information. SUSSEX LIVING July 2016

BUSINESS TO BUSINESS

BY ANN SWAIN

Small Business,

BIG IDEAS Ann Swain, Chair of the West Sussex Federation of Small Businesses Policy Team, tells us about some of the daily challenges small businesses face There are many possitive sides to running your own small business: many micro businesses are run from home, reducing the commute to zero; work time can be used flexibly to fit in around other commitments, and you can connect with your clients often on a one-to-one basis and build possitive relationships. Equally, there can also be challenges. We will be running our Prompt Payment and Access to Procurement Awards again this year and opening them up to the private sector. We have made considerable progress with local authorities who are focussing attention on improving their procurement processes for small businesses and their payment targets are now less than 30 days. Increasingly they are requiring prime contractors to pass the payment terms they receive down to their subcontractors. We have developed guidance for selfemployed, micro and small businesses on invoicing, as a key factor in getting paid is to avoid submitting an invoice that ends up in the ‘query’ or pending tray. We are seeking to liaise with other public bodies and we want to involve the private sector, which is why we support the Gatwick Diamond Meet the Buyer event, a major opportunity for small businesses in Sussex. Both the Living Wage and pension auto-enrolment, initiatives which are very welcome in their own right, have knock-on effects on the overall costs of running a business. Many forget the impact of Living Wage on the differentials for the other employees in a business. The additional time required to

Why bother to run your own small business? There is a great deal of satisfaction to be made from doing it

setup and run the pension scheme is an additional cost either in time or payment. We also have the latest proposal from HMRC that small businesses should submit quarterly tax reports. This can be problematic and have a direct impact on how a small business operates. Many of the smallest use spreadsheets for day to day records and do not have the time to complete an electronic record every time they make a purchase as they are too busy getting on with the job that generates the income. Nationally FSB is raising their concerns with HMRC and I would like to hear more from local businesses. Last but by no means least, is the issue of access to reliable high speed broadband. It is good to hear that the Government have made a pledge of 10MBps broadband to all residents and businesses by 2020, and we are looking forward to hearing more detail about the delivery of this. Anything less than this can impact on the ability of a business to undertake Internet banking, trade on line, make VAT returns etc. There is likely to be further funding becoming available and we would be willing to work with groups in rural estates or edge of village locations to facilitate joint applications.

You might be wondering why anyone would bother to run their own small business with these challenges facing them, but along with the triumph of success, there is a great deal of satisfaction to be made from doing it. www.sussexliving.com
