SUSSEX LIVING March 2016
Editor’s COMMENT
Welcome to Sussex Living Magazine! What a busy month March is with Mother’s Day on the 6th and an early Easter on the 27th. Spring is also springing up everywhere with banks of bright daffs and jewel coloured crocuses sprinkled in the grass – a lovely sight to make us smile. We are really excited to present our new property section in this issue (starting page 42), which we hope you enjoy, especially if you are in the market to move, buy or sell. Do get in touch and let us know what you think, we would love to hear your feedback. For all things educational turn to page 52 where our feature starts. We talked to two very knowledgeable retired teachers about maths and history. Both stories are really inspiring and positive and would make a particularly good read for those thinking about a career in teaching. And don’t forget it’s World Book Day on March 3rd, the ideal time for all of us to get reading. Also working in schools in Sussex is the inspiring charity Time 4 Children. These dedicated volunteers make space for children to talk in a safe and calm environment. Read the whole story from page 60. Tori Stevens’ recipe for Spaghetti alla Puttanesca (p.68) has been temping us all this month. It looks absolutely delicious and as a massive bonus is quick and easy to make. Tori also shot our beautiful front cover this month – thanks very much. There is so much more to read in this issue, from home and garden, history, beauty and event listing, we hope you enjoy it all. Happy Easter to all our readers and advertisers, and Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums out there!

East Grinstead Museum has re-opened its doors for 2016 with a new special exhibition ‘Markets & Fairs’ – here is a taster of what to expect Market rights were first granted to East Grinstead in the year 1247 by Charter from Henry III. The market attracted people from the surrounding countryside as well as the town’s own population and was held in St Swithun’s Churchyard. It was not uncommon to hold markets in churchyards allowing people to attend church fi rst; stricter religious views, however, led to market day being changed to Saturday and to a different location. The success of East Grinstead’s market meant that local dealers required more permanent places from which to trade, and in the years around 1400 single storey structures were erected in front of the Churchyard. This is the origin of Middle Row, the ‘island’ of shops on the High Street, still a notable collection of historic buildings. In 1516 East Grinstead was granted a second fair lasting three days to be held 29th November 1st December. It was primarily a livestock market. Welsh drovers drove their cattle to the town on foot, stopping at various places en route. On reaching East Grinstead they would sell them to farmers and dealers who would fatten them up to sell on. Despite changes with times and location, the market in East Grinstead flourished and became well known for the quality of its stock across Sussex. Corn was traded at the weekly market and 1703 saw the first monthly cattle market. By the latter half of the eighteenth century a wide variety of animals were being traded with Welsh cattle still proving particularly successful. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the market was still flourishing but eventually the lack of
6
SUSSEX LIVING March 2016
a railway connection affected it. Happily, the coming of the railway reversed the downward trend. Fairs continued to be held at various times throughout the year but received mixed responses as they often lasted far longer than they should.
Corn was traded at the weekly market and 1703 saw the first monthly cattle market During the 1920s changing habits and lifestyles saw the markets dwindle hampered further by the Second World War. However, although the markets diminished over the course of the century, in East Grinstead today the weekly market has been revived and can be found on the High Street every Thursday and fresh fruit and vegetable stalls can be found regularly on the London Road. The notable tradition of fairs also continues with great success – 2015 saw the 37th annual May Fair organised by the East Grinstead & District Lions Club. The revived markets and fairs continue the town’s proud tradition and bring people far and wide to visit historic East Grinstead.
EAST GRINSTEAD MUSEUM Markets & Fairs runs until 22 May 2016, free entry. For further details visit www.eastgrinsteadmuseum.org.uk

Horsing around For a fun family day out come to the famous London Harness Horse Parade at the South of England Centre, Ardingly on Easter Monday 28th March and celebrate transportation through the ages The 2016 London Harness Horse Parade will be the 50th Anniversary of the amalgamation of the London Cart Horse Parade (fi rst started in 1885) and the London Van Horse Parade (started in 1904) which combined in 1966. To celebrate this Anniversary, a special commemorative brass will be issued together with special rosettes. With hopes that the Parade will be bigger and better than ever this year, as many people as possible are encouraged to take part and come and watch. The Committee would also be delighted to hear from anybody whose family attended the 1966 Parade and has attended regularly ever since. “As always we are looking forward to an even bigger Parade in 2016,” said Jackie Shearman, Parade Secretary. “Indications are that there will be a good cross-section of transport through the ages to entertain the spectators this Easter Monday and I urge anyone who hasn’t taken part before or hasn’t joined us for a few years to support us this year and see just how much the Parade has expanded whilst still retaining the same family traditions from years gone by.” The London Harness Horse Parade has been a popular Easter spectacle for 130 years, and ten years ago moved from its central London location to the spacious, purpose-built South of England Centre in Ardingly. In addition to the 100 plus horse drawn vehicles the Parade will include vintage tractors, historic and classic cars, allowing spectators to experience the progression from horse drawn transport to mechanically propelled vehicles. The event will also feature stationary engines, trade stands, refreshments and horse drawn wagon rides. The recently introduced Newcomers’ Award is bringing in a greater number and a wider variety

of exhibitors. This award is open to all new exhibitors or exhibitors who have not entered the London Harness Horse Parade within the last five years. All qualifying entries will receive a special rosette and a copy of the Centenary History Book “Parade”, in addition to any other prizes. So, saddle up and come and join in the fun of the London Harness Horse Parade.

The children are the stars of the show at this annual event held in Brighton, celebrating achievements, courage, performance, fundraising and much more Now in its sixth year, The Child of Sussex Awards is a celebration of the truly amazing qualities of our children. There are 12 categories, including the courage award, best brother or sister award, carer award and performer award, aimed at representing all aspects of a child’s life. The children really are the stars of the show as their achievements are celebrated, and they are made to feel incredibly special. Their stories can be emotional, heart warming, uplifting and surprising with what they have done at such a young age, and each winning child is truly
10
SUSSEX LIVING March 2016
deserving of their award. Last year the glitzy ceremony was a huge success, with dinner, dancing, a casino and of course the awards themselves. Presented by Bright FM presenter Anna Bingham, the evening attracts a lot of support and respect, and we at Sussex Living Magazine are delighted to be supporting them this year. Over the coming months as the nominations are made and the ceremony itself takes place later in the year, we will be there to cover the stories and talk to the children themselves. Have a look at the website to see all the categories and get your entries in from June (check www. childofsussex.co.uk for details). Nominations can come from all sorts of places, not just the child’s parents. Friends nominate each other, teachers, group leaders, or brothers and sisters. So, if you think your children deserve an award, or know of a child who has achieved something amazing, make sure to nominate them for The Child of Sussex Awards.

Haywards Heath Bike Ride Now in its sixth year, the Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride is set for Sunday 10th April and the organisers are hoping the sunshine will return, together with riders old and new, to enjoy another wonderful day in the saddle. Over the years, the Bike Ride has raised huge amounts of money for local people and in 2015 over £14,000 was given to help those suffering from Dementia. This year, with the help of our sponsors, our focus has moved to families who need support in our community. There will be four routes and all riders will be ‘chipped’ so everyone will know how well they did and a warm welcome home to tired riders in The Broadway with live music. But, as Chairman, Mike Oliver, says, “Our Bike Ride is a day for families too; this year, with the help of our sponsors, we’re raising money for the Maternity Unit at the PRH so we’re looking forward to welcoming lots of riders to what we hope will be a fantastic day of fun in the April sunshine!” If you register now at www. hhbikeride.co.uk, you’ll get an special Early Bird Discount. And don’t forget, even if you’re not a cyclist but would like to be part of the fun, do get in touch and help us to marshal or register. Call Ruth on 01444 453399 ruth@i-dmc.co.uk

It is ten years since Ardingly performed Creation and the choir will be joined as always by the Mid-Sussex Sinfonia in the magnificent surroundings of Ardingly College Chapel. This time the singers will all be displaying Marie Curie’s Daffodils! The audience may well be familiar with the fine quartet of soloists. Mark Stone (Baritone) performs internationally and is making his first appearance with the choral society. Adrian Thompson (Tenor) first sang as a boy with Robert Hammersley (conductor) in a Promenade Concert in 1973 but this time he will be coming straight over from Glyndebourne where he will be rehearsing for his solo role in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger. Best known of all to Sussex will be Eloise Irving whose delightful young soprano voice has enchanted audiences many

tax tears With the end of the current tax year clearly in sight, now is the time to take stock of your fi nancial affairs, to ensure you take advantage of tax allowances and any opportunities to minimise your tax liabilities. From April 2016, there are a number of changes to tax legislation and in particular to the taxation on dividends, so it’s in your best interest to be prepared. “Basically, there are two months left for tax planning up to the 5th April and there are always things that you can do before the end of the tax year, such as making personal pension contributions and putting any spare cash into an ISA,” explains Chris Whitley-Jones, Managing Partner at PRB Accountants. “But with the introduction of a 7.5% tax on dividends, those running a limited company may wish to extract profits via dividends in the current tax year.” For those of us who fi nd fi nancial matters and taxation a confusing and bewildering prospect, it’s important to have professional and helpful support and PRB excels in this. “If you’re at all uncertain about your fi nancial affairs, come and talk to us. An initial consultation is free and there are always opportunities to ensure your fi nances are working as efficiently as possible for you,” says Chris. As the government seeks to boost tax revenues it’s important to stay ahead of the game. Believe it or not, Crawley has an annual literary festival that has been bringing together Sussex residents who share a love of reading, writing, music and art for the past six years. WORDfest 2016 will take place between 12-23 April 2016 offering author talks, creative workshops, performances, recitals and more at venues in Crawley – mostly for free. Marianne Lindfield, co-founder and director of WORDfest, said: “Crawley perhaps does not readily spring to mind when thinking of art, music and literature. But, among its 110,000 population lies a thriving arts, music and literary scene. It is our job, as organisers of WORDfest, to shine a light on
the creativity that flows among the Crawley Boroughs, and help it to flourish by bringing new and established talent into the town and nurturing a community that shares a love of reading, writing, music and the arts. We hope you will come and see for yourselves whether we have achieved that.” WORDfest is a voluntary festival organisation that aims to build closer community links among Crawley residents who share a love of reading, writing, music and art. It aims to offer events to inspire adults and children alike with the power and beauty of language, regardless of their usual reading habits. carried out what is probably the world’s longest running, 40 years, continuing detailed study of a stream. This naturally acid stream has become less acidic during this time with little species changed. This period spans over 20 generations for most of these invertebrates. The more acid preferring species have declined whilst others have increased. The community food web has changed with a wider range and increased numbers of predators and a new top predator. The environmental change appears ultimately to shape the streamlife and the food chains in this Ashdown Forest stream. Come along and be fascinated by the story of the wildlife of this local stream. BY RUTH LAWRENCE
Welcome to
KINGSCOTE VALLEY With cycle paths, walks, trains, activities, historical properties to visit and a whole host of other things to inspire and entertain, Kingscote Valley is a super destination for old and young alike I picked a crisp, bright February day to begin exploring East Grinstead’s new tourist destination, the 2,000 acre Kingscote Valley, encompassing an area between Kingscote Station and Weir Wood Reservoir. Conceived as a way of promoting local businesses each of whom celebrate the valley’s scenic beauty and varied attributes, the area boasts walking and cycling trails that traverse some of the most iconic Sussex countryside. Kingscote Station was restored by the Bluebell Railway to the British Railways period of the mid 1950s; smartly painted in green and cream in contrast to deep red brick, the station was originally one of the quietest on the Brighton network, serving just a few local houses. It now includes a cycle hire facility from which to explore winding country lanes and off road tracks and a picnic area behind Platform 2 from which to watch the trains while planning your journey. The station acts as a starting point for suggested walks and
cycle tracks which take a couple of hours to complete; just strenuous enough to reward yourself with a pub lunch yet easy enough to handle by enthusiastic children on foot or bike. The beauty of the walks is that they are criss-crossed by numerous smaller paths, each begging to be explored. I set off intending to stick to the designated three mile circular journey from the station to Deers Leap but I meandered into Minepit Wood off Vowels Lane and then strayed too close to the magnificent views of Weir Wood Reservoir, which led to another detour. Here lies the attraction of this area; it encompasses woodland, water, far reaching vistas, open fields, tracks, streams and historic country houses. The valley includes a section of the High Weald Landscape Trail, which stretches for 90 miles from West Sussex to Kent. Stone Hill Rocks lie on the trail just to the north of the reservoir; climbers’ ropes have worn grooves
in the sandstone and you can discover layers of different sands by looking up through large vertical cracks. With spring on the way, Kingscote Valley should prove a destination to enjoy sedate strolls, rolling views, adrenaline sports and culture, all within walking or cycling distance from one another. The beauty of having so much variety in so small an area is that contrasting experiences can be enjoyed during single day trips that appeal to young and old alike. For further information visit www.visiteastgrinstead.com/ kingscote-valley and for your chance to enter a Kingscote Valley photography competition go to Visit Kingscote Valley on Facebook.

Waterside walk Weir Wood Reservoir is full of natural surprises and is home to an incredible array of species of bird, insect and beast. Ruth Lawrence visits and is rewarded with the sight of Cormorants During my exploration of the Kingscote Valley, the gorgeous view across Weir Wood Reservoir pulled me off my intended route, to the water’s edge, basking in amber late afternoon light. It was a group of cormorants that halted me. Gathered near the north west shore, their archaic black silhouettes were reflected in the water, turned russet by the lowering sun. Cormorants are no stranger to the reservoir; a recent working party spotted 47 in a single day and these large, distinctive birds are always a pleasure to watch, particularly while drying themselves, wings outstretched in the sun. The reservoir is a haven for migrating and resident birds – 250 species have been identified here including the elusive osprey. The hide close to the reservoir edge offers superb views of water birds and feeding stations making it easy to spot songbirds at close quarters. I was lucky enough to watch a heron glide down; in flight they look so much larger than their landed slender selves and their languid wingbeats make them effortless to photograph in flight. Possibly one of the most difficult birds to capture with a camera is the kingfisher. Weir Wood has a specially constructed bank to attract them and there are regular sightings which can be recorded on the reservoir’s website. Weir Wood was created in the mid 1950s by damming the River Medway but before human intervention, the reservoir was a valley of the river. This was a place where people of the Middle Stone Age may have hunted and two Mesolithic flint cutting tools were found in the area during the dry conditions of 1976. Since the mid 60s the entire reservoir was

declared a site of special scientific interest because of the rich community of breeding, wintering and migrating birds. It’s not only birds that are thriving here; 28 species of butterfly have been recorded during surveys and a staggering 140 species of moth. Nest boxes are maintained throughout the reserve, providing homes for owls, waterbirds and songbirds while rafts have been constructed to attract nesting terns.
Cormorants are no stranger to the reservoir; a recent working party spotted 47 in a single day and these large, distinctive birds are always a pleasure to watch The reservoir is a thriving ecosystem and a favourite place for people to enjoy wildlife at close quarters without having to walk far. It is tranquil yet accessible and boasts some of the most beautiful views in the area during each season. Natural habitats range from reed beds, marsh and meadow to mature and coppiced woodland and there is a heronry visible from the hide, usually consisting of twenty nests. The reservoir can be enjoyed as its own destination or included in a circular walk within the Kingscote Valley and each season holds the promise of a fresh encounter with nature. www.sussexliving.com

LOCAL WALK
BY LES CAMPBELL
Lindfield
Walk
Get stuck into our March walk (be prepared for mud!), taking in Lindfield village, golf course and Ouse Valley Way This 3.5 mile walk from LindďŹ eld starts from the Wilderness Car Park close to the Church at the top end of the High Street. Part of the route follows the Ouse Valley Way, a long-distance walking route from the source of the River Ouse at Lower Beeding to the English Channel at Seaford. When the route was surveyed, it was extremely muddy for much of the way so be prepared with some sturdy footwear. Alternatively, conditions underfoot might have improved by spring! From the car park, walk through the church car park past the school and at the church turn left along a brick pathway and out to the road. Cross to the pavement opposite and turn right. After a few yards, turn left on a signed path at Little
Blacklands. Shortly go right to a signpost beside a garage and go left on a fenced path with houses on your left. On reaching a crossing track, turn right and follow this undulating track for a little under a mile to join the drive to Kenwards Farm where you should go left, and out to High Beech Lane and turn left. This is a fairly busy road, but there is an adequate verge on the left hand side of the road for much of the way. At the top of the hill, turn right into Sandridge Lane. Follow this residential road to the end then carry on straight ahead to cross the Haywards Heath Golf Course initially through an avenue of trees. Please note the safety signs and keep a watchful eye for stray golf balls! Look for a signpost close to a tall conifer, and veer right across the golf course in the direction indicated to a protruding hedge. Turn left, and follow a surfaced path out to a cross paths. Turn left and follow the obvious path southwards. Again take care, as the golf course is on both sides of the path. Where the golf course ďŹ nishes, the path continues ahead dropping down to a sunken track by a redundant kissing gate. Maintain direction ahead to eventually cross a footbridge over a stream. The path goes uphill to join a drive at the continued on page 26

Cross to the road opposite which is signposted to Lindfield. This is Sunte Avenue. At the end of this road by the Witch Inn, cross Hickmans Lane to the signed path opposite. Follow an enclosed path between houses, and on reaching an estate road, sidestep to your right, and continue on the path beside house number 27. On reaching another estate road, pick up the path again at the end of a cul-de-sac, which takes you into the Hickmans Lane Playing Fields. Cross the middle of the playing field aiming for a pair of white garages in Hickmans Lane. Cross Hickmans Lane and take the signed path beside the garages which bears right and out to the B2028 at the north end of the High Street opposite the Tiger. Dear Sussex Living... …My husband and I went on the walk, from your recent magazine, starting from The Red Lion in Chelwood Gate, via Birchgrove, Chelwood Common and back to the pub. We wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed the walk, although it was very muddy and hard going in places following the wet weather of late. There was a nice mixture of woodland, countryside, including the golf course and nice quiet country lanes. Well done Les, we usually cut your walks out from the magazine to do when possible, please keep up the good work and keep us all fit! Kind regards, Linda Davies …I am happy to report that following the publication in the Local Living section of Sussex Living about our CARE work in the community, we had four volunteers putting their names
forward. This may not seem a huge number but it was the largest response from one source we have had. We currently have 260 clients served by 115 active volunteers so we are very anxious to increase the ratio of volunteer numbers. I hope that your readers, seeing this letter, will be inspired to get in touch on 01444 455955. Yours sincerely, Frank Nickson, CARE Publicity Officer
…Thank you. My brother and I are so pleased we bit the bullet and advertised with you! We have had a great response from our advertising since 2010. The quality of the publication and the standard of service is great, and it’s wonderful to have a dedicated account holder. The design team are very helpful with all the artwork and it’s also great getting coverage online. Overall it has been marvellous for my three businesses for Sussex, Flat Roofs, BC Camping and our units to let and we have seen more and more people over the years as a result of the advertising. A great experience and fantastic coverage for my businesses! Grahame & Neil Goodridge, Blacklands Farm, Henfield

HOME & GARDEN

PUTTING
FLOORS
ON
TOP! Flooring can make or break a room and, as a smart pair of shoes elevate an outfit, can bring the whole feel of a house to a different level. Read on for a comprehensive breakdown of styles and usage Over the past decade the range of home and garden floor coverings has increased to such a degree, that choosing the best flooring for your lifestyle and budget can be a bewildering process. The key factors to consider are durability, comfort and style and to help you decide on a surface that works for your home, we’ve compiled a handy guide exploring everything from carpet to concrete.
INTERNAL FLOORING Carpet Carpet is warm, soft, durable, nonslip and its insulating properties can reduce your energy bills. What’s more, it comes in a vast array of colours, patterns and textures which can satisfy most design styles. Fibres range from manmade (nylon, acrylic, polypropylene) to natural (sisal, wood), providing a range of durability, texture and comfort. Choosing a stain and soil resistant style will help to keep it clean and if you’re sensitive to allergens some carpets can actually trap and inhibit dust mite and bacteria growth. Having said that, it requires regular vacuuming and the occasional deep clean and is not as long lasting as hard surfaces.
Concrete Giving an industrial look which is increasingly popular, concrete is both durable and stylish. The surface fi nish can be textured or polished and colour can be added to match your decor. As it is cold underfoot, underfloor heating works well with this surface. Once sealed, it is suitable for any room in the house, withstands stains, scratches and moisture and does not absorb odours. While fragile objects will break if dropped it’s a small price to pay for a sleek and contemporary look.
Carpet is warm, soft, durable, nonslip and its insulating properties can reduce your energy bills Cork A natural floor covering, cork is made from tree bark and is hypoallergenic, insulating and mould resistant, which helps to explain its rising popularity. Warm and soft underfoot, it is available as tiles or interlocking planks and comes in a good selection of colours and styles, so you can create a design of your choice. Cork is as hard wearing as wood, but will need additional sealant in damp rooms, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Be aware that it can fade over time when in direct sunlight and cork may need resealing once signs of wear become evident. A low maintenance material, simply sweep, vacuum or mop to keep clean. continued on page 32

Hardwood Eternally popular, classic hardwood flooring creates a warm and natural ambience and will last a lifetime. Colour, grain patterns and hardness vary with different wood types, but for a busy family life, choose the hardest wearing possible, so any wear and tear can be sanded and refinished as many times as necessary. This is the main difference between solid and engineered hardwood, as the latter can be difficult to repair when damaged. Having said that, the construction of engineered wood gives it greater stability, allowing it to withstand greater levels of humidity, making it suitable for bathrooms and damp rooms. For those wanting to make a statement, marquetry (inlaying different woods to create decorative patterns and designs) is also becoming a popular way to mark your style. Laminate Tough, easy to clean and affordable, laminate can give you the appearance of wood without the price. In fact, laminate can also emulate stone or tiles and will withstand stains, scratches, fading and moisture, making it a family favourite. Available
in strips or planks that mimic wood, or squares that mimic tiles, high end laminate can offer realistic graining and colouring features and a choice of gloss or matt finishes.
Cork is as hard wearing as wood, but will need additional sealant in damp rooms, such as kitchens and bathrooms Linoleum Natural, biodegradable and hypoallergenic, ‘lino’ is made from natural resin and flax. It is available in a huge selection of styles and colours and is low maintenance, durable and mould resistant. With these qualities it’s no wonder that this practical natural flooring is making a comeback as new generations appreciate its benefits. Available as both sheets and tiles, the choice of colours and patterns are as wide as your imagination. Rubber Resilient and modern, rubber flooring comes in a variety of colours, patterns and textures that will never fade or wear. It is easy to clean, install and is moisture resistant making it great for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. continued on page 34

Tiles Tiles are made from natural materials including ceramic, porcelain and stone. Traditionally, tiled floors were usually found in hallways, bathrooms and kitchens, but the durability of tiles and their low maintenance has seen an increased usage throughout the home. They are infi nitely versatile in terms of colour and patterns and add a cool elegance to most rooms. Ceramic tiles are less hard wearing than porcelain but natural stone floors, including travertine, marble, limestone and slate are the most durable. As tiles can be cold underfoot, it is wise to consider underfloor heating when installing. Vinyl Low cost, low maintenance and ideal for damp areas like bathrooms, vinyl offers cheap and cheerful flooring. Available in sheets, planks or tiles, there is a huge selection of colours and styles to choose from and vinyl itself now has more depth and texture than in the past. Soft and warm underfoot, vinyl is hard wearing and modern production techniques mean it can be made to look like wood, slate and even leather. Some vinyls also come with a form of protection against mould, mildew and bacteria. What’s more, it doesn’t dent, scratch, stain or fade. EXTERNAL FLOORING Bricks Brick patios and pathways give a wonderfully classic and traditional appearance and can be patterned to create herringbone, circular and basketweave designs. However, over time as the ground shifts and cracks appear, moss grows to fill them and when wet, this surface can be slippery and uneven.

Concrete Concrete paving slabs remain one of the most popular choices for garden surfaces. They are inexpensive and fairly low maintenance, although cracking can be a problem. However, it is fairly straightforward to pull up and replace damaged pavers. Modern production techniques mean that the concrete used can be made to resemble bricks or stone, giving you more design options. continued on page 36

Grass While grass itself is high maintenance, modern artif icial grass requires little attention and always looks fantastic. For those with small gardens or balconies, this new generation of soft and natural looking artif icial grass offers the chance to enjoy some greenery without the hard work. In fact, the benef its of no grass cutting or weeding means you can spend more time relaxing and enjoying your garden, making this material an appealing option for the time poor. Decking Wood decking is a popular choice for patio areas, but will need cleaning and resealing most years. If your garden is sloped, decking can be used to create levels that follow the incline, allowing for easy access across your plot. What’s more, if you’re practical and handy, decking can be installed as a fairly easy DIY project. Natural Stone While natural stone is expensive, it looks fabulous, is incredibly hard wearing and is virtually maintenance free. It can be used for patios, walkways, driveways and porches. Using a local stone can help to keep the cost down and if you’re looking to create a design theme, using stones of an irregular shape and various colours, allows you to create mosaic patterns.
Stones & Pebbles Even the most unaccomplished DIYer should have no problem installing stones and pebbles in their garden. Virtually maintenance free, they are also suitable for all weathers. They offer an easy and inexpensive way to fill in areas, creating a contemporary style.
While grass itself is high maintenance, modern artificial grass requires little attention and always looks fantastic
Tiles Any ceramic tiles used outside need to be both slip and frost resistant. Grout will need to be sealed to prevent cracking, but despite these potential issues, tiles can look amazing to create borders, mosaics, pathways, or to add a focal point within a large patio area.

GARDENING
BY FLO WHITAKER
Spring BLOOMS Heed Flo Whitaker’s advice this month for a blooming glorious garden all through the spring, and try not to get carried away with those shears! One of the most frequent queries to come up in horticultural question and answer sessions goes like this: “I have a healthy plant that grows well but never produces flowers. Why?” Often the blame can be laid at the hands of a gardener with secateur-happy tendencies. Many springflowering shrubs such as rhododendron, camellia, wisteria, lilac and azalea produce flowers on growth made in the previous year, so the frustrated hairdressers among you who rush out on the fi rst warm day of spring, unable to resist a quick “trim and tidy” may be unwittingly cutting off flowering stems that were on the point of bursting forth. Snip go the shears - and bang goes this years’ display. Here’s a revolutionary idea: if in doubt, consult a good gardening book before you indulge in a manic flurry of snipping ‘n’ clipping. Bah! However, varieties of willow (salix), and dogwood (cornus), that are grown for their colourful winter stems do require ruthless spring pruning. It’s a task best done when the plants are starting into growth. If there’s a scissor-happy person in your family, give them the job as it will satisfy the cravings of the most cut throat barber-gardeners. The best method is to remove every stem, cutting each one down to a few inches in height, making sure the cut is made immediately above a leaf joint. This will stimulate
masses of new growth - the younger stems give the best winter colour. Granted, the plants will look awful for a while, but like a bad haircut, it’s just a matter of waiting a few weeks for new shoots to emerge. The prunings can be used as twiggy plant supports for emerging geraniums, campanulas and suchlike. Mother Nature thoroughly approves of recycling. Lupins and delphiniums are coming into growth now, so why not try some basal cuttings. What you’re looking for are vigorous, stocky shoots approximately 10 cms high. You can take several cuttings from an established plant. Taking a sharp knife, (an old kitchen knife will do), push the blade a couple of inches into the soil next to the chosen shoot, make a fi rm cut under the soil, (the term ‘basal’ indicates cuttings should be taken as near to the roots as possible) and carefully pull away the shoot. Remove any surplus leaves - the bottom half of the cutting needs to be bare-stemmed. Pot this lower half into gritty compost, ensuring the remaining leaves are above the soil surface. Water and keep in a warmish greenhouse, but away from direct sunshine. Check regularly - the compost needs to be kept moist, (not wet!) and in a few weeks you’ll have rooted cuttings that can be potted on and planted into your borders this autumn.
If in doubt, consult a good gardening book before you indulge in a manic flurry of snipping ‘n’ clipping!

TOWN
or Country?
A long debated question with no absolute answer, is it the bright lights of urban living that flick your switch, or are you a country bumpkin at heart with no greater pleasure than wellies and wax jackets? Do you love the hustle and bustle of the busy town centre – the lights, the high-trend shops, the diverse mass of people all mixed together? Or is it the quiet, fresh country air you crave, a connection to nature, a quaint village High Street and a traditional old pub? Choosing where to live can be a difficult decision to make – both the town and the country have their merits and their downfalls, and both seem to have their stalwart supporters as well. But sometimes a move from one to the other is in order; your needs
might have changed as a new job takes you to new places, children require a little more space to grow or a simple change of pace takes your fancy. Here in leafy Mid Sussex we are lucky to have many living options available to us; town, village and country, and on our doorstep even more urban areas exist making the move to big city life easy. So, which will you go for? Be it town or country, or somewhere in between, there is bound to be your ideal property out there somewhere.
Both the town and the country have their merits and their downfalls, and both seem to have their stalwart supporters as well
Country Living: Generally speaking, you get more for your money in terms of housing in the country than in a town or city centre. Parking is easier as there are less restrictions. There is more space, particularly garden space compared to a similar urban property. It is generally quieter with less light pollution.
easier to make friends. Schools are generally smaller, resulting in a probable reduction of student violence and an increase in parent involvement, student accountability and grades. There is less pollution in the country, probably resulting in better health, although the use of pesticides is higher in the country than in urban areas.
You can achieve a closer connection with nature and the seasons – helpful for developing an awareness of seasonal foods and animals, and issues such as global warming. You may enjoy closer connections in your community and find it
Town Living: Public transport is more widely available and frequent, making travel options easier and having a positive impact on the environment as well. There is a wider choice and availability of shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs. You may be closer to amenities such as leisure facilities, shops and hospitals. You obtain a greater level of anonymity with urban living.

There may be a wider choice of schools, although they can be large and intimidating to some children. Higher crime; a recent sociology report claims that over the past two decades, crime in rural areas has been consistently lower than in nonrural areas. However, over the same time period, the relative number of burglaries rose more in rural areas compared to both suburban and urban areas.

Director of Martin & Co Burgess Hill
The spring is a time of optimism and new beginnings. The days are longer and the cold winds of winter are long gone. All that lies ahead are the relaxing, and hopefully warm, days of summer. You should be
able to get your garden blooming, and the spring weather will allow you to get the exterior of your property into fantastic shape. While there will probably be more properties for sale in your area at this time of year, you could be able to use an increase in the number of house hunters to your advantage. Buyers will probably want to get moved into their new home by the summer, so ‘staging’ your home to sell in spring in the right way should pay dividends. So if you are planning to move this spring give us a call, and if you instruct us to sell your property before March 31st 2016 we will pay the VAT on our fees.

Living by Considering doing Maths at degree level? Don’t be daunted – it can open up a whole world of career choices and opportunities Defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as “the abstract science of number, quantity and space either as abstract concepts (pure mathematics) or as applied to other disciplines such as physics and engineering (applied mathematics)”, mathematics underpins our modern world. Without maths and mathematicians, a society would not be able to function effectively; everything from ensuring traffic flows smoothly through towns, to large-scale staff rostering for the airline industry – applying mathematical models to realworld problems is what allows fundamental infrastructures in our society to work. Colin Wilsdon, a former university lecturer in operational research (a branch of applied mathematics), explains, “In

simplistic terms, operational research uses techniques from mathematical sciences such as mathematical modelling and statistical analysis and arrives at optimal solutions to complex decision-making processes.” Having originally studied mathematical physics at Oxford University, Colin spent 17 years teaching physics, then later retrained in maths and operational research. “Applying mathematics to real-life problems and helping companies to save time, money and gain more efficiency was new to me and extremely motivating.

You felt you were making a difference.” As well as creating a new stock control programme for a wine warehouse, which looked at patterns of consumer demand, (and which in turn had the potential to save the company £300k in annual interest payments), Colin also worked for British Rail as part of his training. “We studied the economics of punctuality – very interesting and eye-opening!” he laughs. A passion for problem solving is a key component in the study of mathematics. A real love of numbers and an aptitude for them is of course crucial when it comes to studying maths at a higher level. “Maths at A-level is a given if you want to do a continued on page 54

degree in the subject,” says Colin. “Other useful subjects to study alongside A-Level maths include further maths, physics, chemistry, economics and computing/ ICT – dependent on what you want to specialise in. However a maths degree will always be a great gateway to a whole range of varied careers in and including banking, accountancy, civil service, operational research, and engineering. Maths graduates are vital for the UK economy if we are to compete on a global stage.” This is a view echoed by Will Martindale who studied maths with computer science and management. “A Maths degree is the key to a number of high paying industries, including banking, investment and accounting. I found that having a maths degree on my CV helped open doors that another subject wouldn’t, especially in the City. Maths is well-respected and a bit like physics, in that there’s a perception it attracts smart people.” Niki Bingham, a consultant at one of the big four professional services firms, cites her maths
with German degree as one of the main reasons she got a place on a prestigious graduate trainee programme at the start of her career. “I use maths all the time in my job, for calculating budgets, using massive spreadsheets and data analytics – everything I do at work involves some kind of maths.” Sussex-based teacher Lynne Green did a maths degree, which led to a career in IT consulting, computer programming and system design. “My maths skills gained at degree level were extremely useful. The fact I had a degree in the subject was a true reflection for my employer, that I had the right skill set for the world of IT – i.e. solid mathematical and logical thinking.” Mike Blackmore is a survey engineer who gained the highly regarded MORSE (Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics
& Economics) degree. “Having a maths-based degree means I’m able to analyze and interpret data quickly and accurately. Plus the course taught me invaluable time and project management skills enabling me to work efficiently and independently to this day. Maths degree or not, it’s important for any graduate to have numerate abilities that can be used in all areas of employment.” And what advice would Colin give to A-level students looking for the right maths degree course? “Check with the department how much tutorial support you will get, both face to face and online. Ask what kind of links the department has with the real world and employers – some totally academic courses will only appeal to a small subset of pupils. Finally ask how many of the staff has experience outside of academia. After all maths isn’t just about numbers!”

Life as a
r e h c a te
If you are considering going into teaching or just love a good career story, this enthusiastic and inspiring teaching review is an absolute must read
Peter Liddell is the first to admit he was lucky when he fell into teaching. Initially motivated by the chance to extend his life as a student, when Peter signed up for a PGCE he had no idea that he would be embarking on a lifelong vocation and a 35 year career. “I’d had such a good time at university, when someone suggested I could get an extra year if I did a PGCE, it seemed a great way to continue the student lifestyle,” he laughs. Raised on a council estate in Dover, Peter went to the local grammar school after passing the 11 Plus and his own experience of schooling was not especially pleasant. Along with the culture shock, Peter quickly realised that the teachers had no interest in their pupils, teaching them from the same well-used notes they’d had for years. Boys were only ever referred to by their surnames and there were regular beatings for misbehaviour. Although when he fi rst signed up for his PGCE in Cardiff, Peter still didn’t think teaching was for him, it took just two weeks working in a local primary school to know he’d found his calling. This was reinforced by a spell of teaching practise at a secondary school in Rhymney. “It was brilliant. I
just loved it. The kids were delightful, the other teachers were funny and clever and I just thought I can do this!” he tells me. When Peter applied for his fi rst teaching job at a school in Burgess Hill he had never heard of the place and unbeknown to him at the time, all the other applicants had pulled out. As the only candidate left, the job was his. As he says, “It was kind of like fate that this was where I was meant to be.” It certainly was, as Peter went on to spend thirty-five happy years teaching history, sociology, geography and games at the school, using his own schooling experience as a blueprint for how not to teach. Having said that, it was not always plain sailing and the fi rst few years were tough. “In those early years, planning the lessons and dealing with the kids is difficult. The kids can be ferocious and unless you’ve tried it you can’t imagine how hard it can be,” he confides. “Sadly, in our culture, the old advice for student teachers may still be very useful – don’t smile before Christmas, don’t let them take an inch, and try to earn their respect. If you don’t, you

run the risk of being humiliated most days.” Teaching is all about building relationships, making it an emotional job. Yet, as much as the children can be hurtful, they can equally say and do things that delight you. “Most kids are great, they just want to do the right thing and help where they can. It’s amazing to see how able some kids are, how adaptable and creative they can be and to see them doing all the things you wish you could do, like playing an instrument, drawing and creating stuff. And even those who might have been more challenging to teach, all eventually end up as fairly decent human beings.”
While Peter is now retired, his wife still works as a teacher and his admiration for the profession remains strong. “Teachers get a bad press, which is an injustice because most of those teachers are very bright people doing a very demanding job. They are extremely dedicated, putting in long hours after school and at weekends and are constantly having to adapt to changes to the curriculum, the examination system and an increase in bureaucracy.” Despite this, the job satisfaction can be incredible. “The rewards from teaching stay with you,” he explained. “When I retired the school put together a book full of comments from past and present students and it was humbling to know that I had helped to inspire others to teach or go to university. The best thing I ever did was to go into teaching.”

late-night shopping evenings and the Arts Festival over the summer are great examples of this.” There is also free parking in Lindfield High Street, making it really easy to stop and shop. It’s clear that this sense of community is what drives Claire’s passion for her business, along with offering superb customer service and premium quality products. “I’m still surprised at the poor standard of customer service offered at some bigger stores in this country,” states Claire. “Here in Lindfield and in the boutique itself we pride ourselves on our great customer service, and are very child friendly; there is always something to play with while the adults browse. We offer a free gift-wrapping service, which customers really appreciate, as well as the chance to personalise certain products. We can also wherever possible, order in specific items if people request them and are always on hand to offer advice about our stock. In fact I welcome people to come in and tell me what they would like to see in the shop.” Looking around the boutique, you cannot fail to be enticed by the huge range of gorgeous and highly unusual products on offer, and all reasonably priced. Best sellers include wooden pirate ships and walkers, personalised wooden prams, Noah’s Ark shape sorters and Djeco jigsaws to name a few. “We are constantly updating our stock and I’m always on the lookout for new items that are a bit different.” All products in the shop are also available to purchase online on the new website, which is bright, user-friendly and convenient to use at home or out and about. Time
4 Children
Time 4 Children is a truly inspiring charity working in Sussex schools, giving children much needed time to listen, time to talk and time to play When children are coping with stressful events in their lives, what they need more than anything is the type of emotional listening support that allows them to express their thoughts and feelings safely. The charity Time 4 Children provides that ‘listening ear’ and has helped over 550 Mid Sussex children to more positive mental health. “We are not counsellors or play therapists,” explains Vicky Chalmers, the charity’s founder. “We’re there to provide emotional listening support, with no questions, targets or pressure, just a safe space for the child to relax, play and talk if they wish to.” Vulnerable children may be coping with a number of issues, ranging from a family breakdown, to bullying or domestic abuse. These children, who tend to be primary school age, can be referred by schools, social workers or family support workers throughout Mid Sussex and Crawley. The service
60
SUSSEX LIVING March 2016
is delivered within school to lessen any disruption and each child gets up to one hour a week of one-toone emotional listening support from a team of highly trained volunteers. The number of sessions depends on the needs of the individual child, but most require between 20 and 28 sessions. During this time the children engage in non-directional play, choosing which toys and games to engage with. Volunteers observe and reflect what they’re doing, in a process known as reflective listening, which creates the optimum environment for a child to talk about their experiences and feelings. Child protection is crucial and any disturbing information revealed is passed on. “Most childcare professionals ask questions but in our
experience that can makes some children back off,” says Vicky. “By providing a safe space with nothing asked of them, most children can relax and start to process their emotions.” The benefits of this approach include helping a child to feel important and increasing their trust in adults. This is reflected in improved selfconfidence, enhanced social skills, better behaviour and an increased ability to learn. “It’s incredibly fulfi lling to work directly with a child and see their development,” claims Kate, a long standing volunteer. “It’s lovely to give them an hour a day just for them, without them having to answer questions or fi ll out forms.” At a time when the funding for children’s services is in crisis,
At a time when the funding for children’s services is in crisis, this free service is even more invaluable
www.sussexliving.com
It’s incredibly fulfilling to work directly with a child and see their development
this free service is even more invaluable, as not only does it help vulnerable children during times of emotional trauma, but it can also help to prevent long term mental health issues. However, the charity is in urgent need of funds. When Vicky first started Time 4 Children in 2005, she had no funding and lobbied local businesses for money to buy play equipment and to cover travelling expenses. As a testimony to her vision and success, the charity has grown over the past decade and she now has 19 volunteers. What’s more, Time 4 Children has recently been awarded Approved Provider Standard through the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation. Fundraising has always played an essential role and in 2011, the charity was awarded a five year Big Lottery Grant which has allowed them to expand and help more children than ever before, yet with the grant ending in June and the need for Time 4 Children’s services
greater than ever, it is vital that more funds are raised. This is where you can help. Fundraising efforts can be as simple as hosting a coffee morning, simply donating money or equipment, or taking part in a sporting event and setting up a donation page. Furthermore, if you have time on your hands and could volunteer to help in any capacity, you will be warmly welcomed. “Our services are desperately needed. There is very little funding for children’s mental health issues but the need is huge and we have a waiting list of children who need our help,” says Kate. If you can help to fundraise or offer your time, please contact Vicky at Time 4 Children and help this wonderful local charity to continue their valuable and much needed work supporting vulnerable children.

HISTORY
Picture: Starley on his ‘Salvo Quadricycle’, 1881. Image kindly supplied by Coventry History Centre
Re-inventing the
Wheel Known as the father of cycling, James Starley played a vital role in the bicycles we ride today with his innate ability for invention. And he was born just down the road in Albourne…
In this day and age with the advent of the modern A23, one could be forgiven for zipping past the tranquil village of Albourne and it’s 600 residents. Yet back when roads were dusty tracks this village saw some important history take place; in 1831 it was the birthplace of James Starley, a Sussex man who helped to revolutionise cycling. As a child James went to school in Albourne and then Hurstpierpoint, before he left education aged ten, to work on the family farm. His talent to innovate and create became apparent but by the age of fi fteen he had decided that agriculture was not for him. So he left home, and walking via Little Horsted, Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks he eventually pitched up in Lewisham. James took a job in gardening but during his spare time his talent for invention became obvious; he fi xed a broken sewing machine for his employer and improved the mechanism in the process. James was introduced to the owners of the sewing machine company and in 1859 Newton, Wilson and
Company took him on at their Holborn factory. But James didn’t stay long and just a couple of years later in 1861 he moved to Coventry and cofounded the Coventry Sewing Machine Company. But it was in 1867 that his life changed when a French “Boneshaker” arrived at the factory. The Boneshaker was a predecessor to the bicycle, or velocipede as they were known back then. It was a particularly uncomfortable machine to ride – hence the name – but it was cutting edge for its time, for it had pedals but no chain. The pedals were attached to the front wheel, making it the original fi xed gear bicycle. James Starley’s company began to manufacture bicycles and Coventry became the hub of Britain’s bicycling wheel. His fi rst success was the Coventry Bicycle, or the Ariel as it was also known. These machines evolved into the Ordinary or ‘Penny Farthing’, which featured a gear that rotated the front wheel twice each time the cyclist revolved the pedals once, increasing continued on page 64 SUSSEX LIVING March 2016

speed and reducing workload in the process. The great innovation with this machine was to replace wooden wheels with metal wheels and metal spokes. In 1874 James went on to patent the “tangent spoke wheel” which would be his greatest cycling achievement. The spokes were set at a tangent to the wheel hub and adjacent spokes were set in opposite directions to each other, creating a very light but much stronger wheel. It is the type of wheel seen on most bicycles today. Still, James had more to offer. As he got older he found it became more difficult to ride a sociable tricycle with his son. This type of bike was a side-by-side tricycle where both riders each powered one rear wheel independently of the other, but these bikes were difficult to steer, because of the differential power input of the two riders. Starley solved that problem as well, however, with the invention of the differential gear. This creation allowed the wheel on the outside of a corner to rotate faster and the wheel on the inside of a corner to rotate more slowly. The prototype was built and the invention was patented in days. This “Starley Axle” or greatly developed variations of it, is still incorporated into most road cars today. James worked right up to his death at the age of 50 in June 1881. A monument was erected in 1884 on Greyfriar’s Green in Coventry and it’s still there today and The Coventry Transport Museum sits on the site of Starley’s former factory. James Starley had married Jane Todd while in Lewisham and they had a family of four sons and two daughters, although it was James’s nephew John Kemp Starley who was to fi nd further fame with the family name – John Kemp Starley invented the Rover safety bicycle, although over time the Rover company he founded would make its fortune by making cars. So, next time you’re putting your peddle power to the test climbing up to the summits of Ditchling Beacon or Kidd’s Hill, spare a thought and a few thanks for Albourne’s little known father of cycling – James Starley.

I went for the plastic option for the eggs as real ones can be quite fragile and as the kids like getting stuck in they don’t have to worry. You can find plastic eggs in most craft shops and they’re very reasonable, however if you wish to use real blown ones they work just as well.

Put 2-3 blobs of different coloured paint and glitter paint onto a piece of paper. Take an egg and stick the skewer into one end, then put the egg into the paint and twirl around to make a pretty marbled affect. Once covered place
the skewer in a cup with plenty of paper underneath for drips. Try loads of different colours and see what lovely patterns you get! You will need to leave the eggs to dry over night. Once dry take your jug or vase, fill with a little water and arrange the branches, daffodils or any other flowers you wish. Thread the ribbon through the loop ties on the end of the eggs and decorate the branches. You can leave some of the eggs on the skewers and arranged them in the jug for added colour. Take a handful of shredded paper and scrunch around the edges to make a nest shape. Place the small polystyrene or chocolate eggs into the nests and arrange the Easter chicks on the top.

Spaghetti alla Puttanesca This beautiful tasting pasta dish is quick to make and tastes delicious too. We make it a lot in our house as it’s Lily’s favourite, so its on our menu at least once a week! The anchovies give a wonderful depth and flavour to the dish, but don’t make it fishy at all – good news for those who aren’t keen on anchovies like myself. Give it a try, you will be surprised how good it is! SERVES 6
PREP TIME 10 mins
COOK TIME
Spaghetti alla Puttanesca 1-2 tbsp olive oil 1 medium white onion, finely diced 6 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 1/2 tsp red fresh chillies or chilly flakes 2 50g tins of anchovy fillets, chopped 1 tbsp capers, roughly chopped 2 tins of tomatoes 1 90g jar of black de-stoned olives Pepper A pinch of sugar 700-800g spaghetti Parmesan

occasionally, until you see a little colour. Then add the garlic, anchovies and chilly and stir together. Turn the heat down to medium low and leave to simmer for a further 5 minutes or until the ingredients look like a paste and the anchovy has broken down. 2. Add capers, the tomatoes and olives, some pepper and a pinch of sugar. Stir and let simmer for 10-20 minutes stirring now and again. 3. Whilst your sauce is simmering away pop a large pan of water on a high heat, place your spaghetti in the water with a sprinkle of salt and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain and add the spaghetti to the Puttanesca sauce. Serve with grated parmesan and a side salad if you wish. It goes well with pepery leaves such as rocket, and for something a bit special try adding artichoke hearts.

HEAVEN
Sara Whatley is blown away by the warm welcome, deliciously exciting food, the happy marriage of modern dining and cosy old drinking and the attention to detail at The Cat Inn – no wonder it’s winning awards Winner of the 2016 Sussex Food & Drink Awards, The Cat Inn is justly feeling like the cat that got the cream. The awards are all about local produce, which The Cat does in spades. Much of what is on your plate or in your glass, from the meat and veg to the rapeseed oil in the dressing and the beer in your glass, both ale and pilsner, hail from local Sussex producers. Not to mention the wine list; Bluebell Vineyard Estates, Breaky Bottom, Nyetimber, and extensive offerings from further afield – a luscious Malbec Reserva and Australian Shiraz Cabernet are unhesitatingly recommended for our meals. Needless to say, proprietor Andrew Russell is thrilled and humbled that he was nominated, voted for and – the cherry on the top – won the award. He positively grins like the Cheshire as he tells me about it on a recent visit. But the food here speaks for itself; we start with salt and pepper squid. Delicate, light, crisply battered rings are offset by the warmth of chorizo, sweet crayfish, crisp apple and sweet chilli dressed salad leaves – a perfectly balanced flavour
We start with salt and pepper squid – a perfectly balanced flavour combination which leaves us fighting over the last bite combination which leaves us fighting over the last bite. Hungry for more, we move on. A Cat classic steak, mushroom and ale pie for the husband and a Balcombe Estate wild mallard duck breast and confit leg for me. The pie immediately has Robin smiling with its huge puff lid and crisp, hand-raised looking short crust base, which tastes how I imagine they did in an old London pie and mash shop: authentic, rich. “This beef is really good, or it’s been through a decanter...” Robin muses as he digs into the soft meat spilling out the crust. A generous swirl of the creamiest mash possible, carrot, kale and a deep flavoursome gravy are the happy bedfellows to this dish. Now to the duck: a prettier plate one could not imagine. Ruby coloured strips of succulent breast are resting on a pile of
well, anything I would imagine – I would happily be spoon fed this puree in heaven. I can just squeeze in pudding, thank goodness, while the husband slips down a tri-coloured frothy latte – the best he has had apparently. I opt for the lemon posset, so fresh, clean and zingy it’s a posset with a punch. No claggy mouthfeel, just powerful natural flavour so creamy it’s almost melting round the edges of my spoon. Fresh red berries and a homemade shortbread round – perfect for dunking – fi nish the pud beautifully. We leave sated, happy, relaxed and already looking forward to the next visit.

Pies
In
A national favourite and a stalwart of the British cuisine, it’s time to celebrate the humble pie! The tenth National Pie Week runs from 7-13th March this year. Apparently 75% of us like to tuck into a pie of some sort once a month, be it sweet or savoury, a snack, main meal or dessert. The English have been eating pies since the 12th Century although they were called “pyes” back then. It was fashionable for the wealthy to pop their favourite songbirds into a pye, which is recorded in the nursery rhyme, “Sing a Song of Sixpence.” Pies have a common element in pastry, be it short-crust, puff or flaky to name but three. They also vary in size, from bite-size snacks to larger creations for multiple servings. Three basic types of pie exist: fi lled pie where pastry lines the dish with the fi lling on top and open, like banoffee pie. A top-crust pie has fi lling in the dish and pastry covering the
contents, like Desperate Dan’s cow pie. A two-crust pie is where pastry lines the dish and also covers the fi lling. Pasties are a form of two-crust pie. Readers of a certain age will recall custard pies on Tiswas being thrown by the Phantom Flan Flinger, while football supporters will be familiar with the chant aimed at the chunkiest team, “Who ate all the pies!” Pies are ubiquitous, found almost everywhere we go. For those on a pie avoidance strategy or aficionados of the mathematical Pi there is another celebratory moment to be enjoyed this year on 10th November at 3.55pm and 26 seconds precisely - which could also be expressed at 3.1415926…

Pink CRUMBLE Serves 4 i Preparation 30 mins i Cooking time 30 mins Oven temp 200C, Gas Mark 6

Time to treat Mummy! Rhubarb and berry crumble is simple and always a winner; especially after a Mother’s Day roast. This gluten free crumble topping can be used for any fruit crumble. If you want to take the option of using oats be sure to buy certified gluten free ones.
Ingredients Rhubarb 300g fresh rhubarb (or frozen) 200g mixed berries (fresh or frozen) 50ml water Aprox 100g caster sugar Crumble 150g gluten free self-raising flour 90g cold butter (cubed) 50g light soft brown sugar 50g gluten free oats (optional) 1. Chop the rhubarb (if using fresh) into chunks approximately 3cm. 2. Place the rhubarb, berries and water into a saucepan and place over a medium heat. 3. Once softened add caster sugar, a little at a time. Add to taste as the sweetness of the fruits can vary but I normally use around 100g.
4. Pre-heat the oven to 200C, gas mark 6. 5. Continue to cook the fruit until all of the added sugar has dissolved. 6. Place the flour, cold butter and sugar into a bowl and begin to rub the contents together with ‘fairy fingers’ until breadcrumbs. 7. If using, add the oats to the crumble topping. 8. Place the stewed fruit into an ovenproof dish and scatter the crumble topping over the top. 9. Bake for around 30 minutes, until the crumble topping is golden. Don’t be disheartened if some fruit juice bubbles over, I think it looks rather lovely! 10. Serve with vanilla ice cream or thick custard.

Forget the pretty pastels this spring and strike an elegant pose in black and white. Geometric prints or block colours, this trend is easy and daring – what a contrast!
Monomania!
Spring is slowly but steadily on its way (hurrah!), so it’s finally time to cast off that winter slump brought on by the monotonous cold temperatures and chilly rain and wind. A foolproof (and fun) way to do this is to try out a new style. Black and white is a timeless trend and is perfect for the transitional weather from winter to spring and has a guaranteed striking effect thanks to the contrast. Be it head-to-toe in complex geometrics or just plain black jeans and a white shirt, the result is super chic and perfect for day to nightwear. Though many may feel that monochrome is more of an autumn trend, those cries of objection will quickly fade away once a couple of these styling tips have been tried out: Delicate patterns, like minimalist houndstooth, are not only soft and sophisticated but will also liven up your wardrobe. Patterns are also an easy way to experiment with monochrome, being less harsh than block patterns or stripes. Try pairing houndstooth patterned skirts or trousers with a white top for a simple yet stunning result. If you want to throw yourself into the world of ‘monomania’, loud block and pulsing, moving patterns – like a jigsaw effect
Try pairing houndstooth patterned skirts or trousers with a white top for a simple yet stunning result jumpsuit or a zigzag patterned dress – are the way to go. Vertical stripes have a lengthening effect, though shy away from donning stripes all over, restricting them to your legs for the best result and add a plain black or white top. Polka dots are also a fun way to play with black and white; dresses or tops are the most effective garments to have covered in daring spots! The black and white look is the perfect day-to-night outfit; just add accessories. Go from office-chic to party-ready with the simple addition of a chunky necklace, extravagant earrings and sky-high heels. Steer away from adding colour as that lessens the impact – keep your jewellery and shoes in the safe-zone of black, white, gold or silver. Modern angular tailoring helps promote clean lines and sharp silhouettes – if you’ve never been a suit person, now is the time to get one. Suits don’t necessarily have to be androgynous either, it all depends on styling.

Every March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and this year research charity Ovarian Cancer Action has chosen the theme Speak Up, Listen Up! Ovarian cancer isn’t as well known as some other female cancers, yet it is the fi fth most common – with more than 7,000 diagnoses in the UK each year. The UK has one of the lowest survival rates in Western Europe, with a woman dying from ovarian cancer every two hours, resulting in 4,300 deaths annually. Ovarian Cancer Action says one of the reasons for the poor survival rate in the UK is that the disease is often spotted too late. The charity’s Chief Executive, Katherine Taylor, says, “Ovarian cancer is particularly difficult to diagnose yet early diagnosis is crucial. When women are diagnosed in the early stages of ovarian cancer they have a 90% chance of surviving for more than five years but this reduces to 22% when diagnosed in the later
To show your support, don your hiking boots and arrange a local #WalkInHerName stages. Too often we hear stories of women not being heard, of their cancer being diagnosed too late.” The charity recognises that speaking up about your health can be difficult and has developed a symptoms diary to help women record their symptoms and take it to their GP. Search for ‘Ovarian Cancer Action’ in your phone’s app store, or download a paper version at www.ovarian.org.uk

It’s time to start making some noise about Ovarian Cancer Month, which is held every year in March. Know the facts, keep talking and help raise some vital funds
Ovarian Cancer: The facts
• It is the most deadly
gynaecological cancer and currently the fi fth most common cancer among women. • There are 7000 new diagnoses each year in the UK • The UK has one of the lowest survival rates in Western Europe, with a woman dying from ovarian cancer every two hours; • That amounts to 4,300 deaths each year
Ovarian Cancer: The symptoms
The four main symptoms of ovarian cancer are: • Persistent stomach pain • Persistent bloating or increased stomach size • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly • Needing to urinate more frequently.

for the past decade or so stretchy, comfy skinny jeans were what you had to be seen in. But change is a-coming, in the form of the rigid, 100 per cent cotton denim jeans of the 90s! If you’re having trouble remembering the way to style these high-rise, straight leg ankle-grazers, here’s how. The cut lends a sharp, sleek silhouette, so can easily be casual or smart wear – meaning that a chunky-knit sweater will look as good as a delicate, lace top. For footwear ankle boots or trainers add the fi nal touch. But if you’re not a 90s fan don’t despair – the available jeans styles remain to be endless. Choose from skinny, tapered, straight-legged, bootcut, low-waist, highwaist or distressed – just to name a few!

Who would’ve thought that trousers originally designed for hard and mucky manual labour would become a huge fashion phenomenon worn over the last 60 years and counting? First made for cowboys and miners, because denim was known for its heavy wearing capabilities, jeans really came into their own in the 50s, thanks to dishy James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, who became a symbol for youth rebellion. Throughout the following decades different subcultures would put their own twist on this versatile clothing item, from the 60s hippies sporting flared jeans through the 70s punks in their tightfitting drainpipes to the 90s slouchy wide legs. They remain an everyday fashion item today and

Robbery Just over two hundred years ago in 1801, a robbery took place at Wall Hill, on the outskirts of Forest Row. West Sussex Record Office in Chichester contains some interesting paperwork on the subject John Beatson was a Scottish innkeeper with an adopted son called William. When William’s wife died the family home was sold and the two men moved to London, only to lose their fortune. They spent a little time in Hartfield, living there briefly, possibly studying the route and times of the mail coach. The route of these two highwaymen was well recorded. On Saturday 18th July 1801 they had stayed overnight in Godstone, before lunching at the Blue Anchor in Blindley Heath the following day, which Mrs Lewis the landlady confi rmed to
the Assizes at the subsequent trial. Prior to the crime they were spotted on East Grinstead Common at 8pm, Sunday evening. The mail was travelling from Lewes to East Grinstead, containing the weekend post, which made the potential haul all the greater. Just after midnight on Monday 20th July the highwaymen sprang from their hiding place at the bottom of Wall Hill and a felony took place. “Edward the mailboy was stopped and his bag of letters taken from him in a field adjoining the road”. Edward was

later, “pickt up on Forest Row Bridge by John Woolgar the same morning about ¼ mile from the place where the Robbery was committed.” The total taken from the mail was estimated at £1314,000 – a sizeable amount now but a huge amount back then. The robber’s immediate escape was towards Hartfield. After stashing some of the plunder in a wheat field, the Beatsons headed for the Chequers public house in Westerham about thirteen miles away, “When after taking some refreshment they went away about 12 o’clock, they hired a single horse chaise to Deptford.” Once in Deptford they took a Greenwich stagecoach. A Wanted Poster from the General Post Office contained the following message: “The Post Boy conveying the mail from Lewes to East continued on page 86

at Westminster the Twelfth Day of February in the Forty Second Year of our Reign.” It was not a long trial although Solicitor Parkin claimed a total of £15.18s.5d in expenses for his five days work, which included “£5.5s.0d for 5 days at Horsham on the trial” as well as “On the road expenses including turnpike gates, 3 shillings 6 pence” and “Post boy 15 shillings.” John Beatson acknowledged his guilt although he and his son denied any guilt on William’s part. Both were found guilty and sentenced to death. And so on Saturday, April 17th, barely three weeks after the trial had begun the Beatsons travelled the twenty miles from Horsham to Forest Row to meet their fate. It was said they sat upon their own coffi ns, while a horse pulled the cart to the place of execution, on specially erected gallows at the site where their crime took place.

At fi rst they were taken to Bow Street in London, and then to Horsham Assizes for trial. Several weeks later in a wheat field close to Hartfield, “Bags and letters were found with property to the amount of £9,531.14s.1½d on Monday the 17th day of August by Richard Walters and Edward Daniel as they were reaping the said field.” The trial began on Monday March 29th 1802. A subpoena was issued to the 30 witnesses called before Judge Baron Hotham: “GEORGE the THIRD, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, To Thomas Palmer Junior, John Doe

Consider two facts: In 1802 when this took place, the modern A22 Lewes Road that bypasses Ashurstwood did not exist and the railway would not arrive for over sixty years. Yet 3,000 people made their way to witness the hangings. The Beatsons were some of the last highwaymen to be hanged. It is said that two holly trees were planted at the place of execution. On my recent visit I found plenty of holly trees in the vicinity but none that would have been there 200 years ago. However, I did witness an eerie cold chill in the air amongst the humdrum of the distant traffic, while a whistling postman delivered the mail.

GET INVOLVED! Tracey Prescott and a team of fundraising crazy people including Adrian Hillman, Sam Bremner, Di & Henry Game to name but a few are embarking on 200miles of cycling over 2 days - 2nd & 3rd April 2016. Tracey decided in April 2015 that she wanted to complete 500 miles of challenges in her 50th Year to raise much needed funds for Henfield Leisure Centre and for Macmillan in memory of her friend Gary Dunk. The challenges so far have been official cycling, running, walking and mud challenges - after the Brighton ½ marathon on Feb 28th 2016 she will have completed 300 miles! You can support the event in many ways - cycling some of the miles on either or both days, giving up some of your time on the days enroute or at the Leisure centre start/finish or simply by donating at

business to business
by Judy stokes
There are around 300 Business Opportunity Profiles each dealing with starting up an individual business idea. Alphabetically these range from setting up an accountancy practice to becoming a yoga or Pilates instructor. Other examples for creative types might be setting up as a decorative glassware maker or for the outdoor enthusiast starting a dog walking business or becoming a garden landscaper. BOPs follow a standard format and detail every aspect of information required to start a particular business. They are updated regularly and cover topics such as qualifications and skills, key market issues, trends and legislation. In addition there are over 300 mini BOPs which are shorter snapshot summaries of niche or emerging business ideas such as becoming a snail farmer or a guided walks organiser. Business Information Factsheets make up another popular part of the COBRA database. These are around 300 practical “how-to” guides covering key start-up and small business management and legal topics. These provide ideal information to help understand a specific business issue such as business regulations, insurance, marketing, e-commerce, personnel/HR, premises and health and safety. COBRA also includes UK Market Synopses which are comprehensive but concise summaries of recent performance and likely future trends and issues affecting 40 key UK market sectors. These are ideal for help with writing a business plan and researching and understanding a market. Reports can be downloaded and emailed, saved to a memory stick or printed out. Charges apply to printing but all other aspects of using and retrieving information from COBRA is free. Simply ask in any of the 36 West Sussex libraries to be signed into COBRA and let the journey to selfemployment begin!
