Editor’s comment
As per usual it’s been all go in the Sussex Living offices this month – the team here love putting the mag together and hope you enjoy it. Ruth Lawrence visited Ben Rainbow from The Sussex Dragonfly Group for our May main feature. She had a fascinating day learning all about these curious and fleeting insects – I was amazed to learn that dragon and damselflies spend 95% of their lives as larvae and only a few short weeks as the bright and beautiful creatures we love. Turn to page 67 for the full story. I am a great fan of walking; it is so beneficial for mind, body and soul and is an easy and free way of getting some gentle exercise. Not to mention clearing the cobwebs after a day cooped up inside! I was so pleased then to be able to feature the 4SIGHT Ramblers this month, an active group of blind and partially sighted people in Mid Sussex who enjoy monthly walks of 4-5 miles. Page 76 has all the details – perhaps you would like to join in or volunteer yourself? Now to some housekeeping. We are very sad to say goodbye to Carla, who has been with the magazine for 7 years. She will be greatly missed by us all, but we know she will be so happy back down in Cornwall with her family. Best of luck Carla, do keep in touch. I do hope you enjoy the rest of the magazine, and as always many thanks to all of our advertisers and readers.

A Quackers Race! Storrington Village Duck Race on 8th May is a thing of glorious British bonkersness, but it is also part of a worldwide duck racing tradition As locals in the sleepy Sussex village of Storrington know, fun fi lled and slightly bonkers family days out don’t come much madder than the annual Storrington Village Duck Race which each year promises thrills and spills as the ducks race to glory alongside a great range of entertainment for all the family. Everyone is invited to join the ducks from midday on Sunday 8th May at Riverside Walk and Library Car Park to race ducks and raise money for The Friends of Storrington First School. There will be the regular hotly contested 6 Duck Races with prizes for the winners of the fi nal race of the day. But what you might not know is that rubber duck races like this are a global phenomenon. Rubber duck races, also known as derby duck races, have been used as a method of fundraising for organisations worldwide for many years now. People donate money to the organisation by sponsoring a duck. Ducks are dumped into flowing water and there they hope to catch a slipstream that will whisk them to glory. The largest race in the United States is the annual Freestore Foodbank Rubber Duck Regatta in Cincinnati, Ohio. First run in 1994, the Rubber Duck Regatta now features over 100,000 ducks, and has raised over $4.6 million. Down under, the Great Brisbane Duck Race is held on the Brisbane River each year. The 100-metre race saw 30,000 rubber ducks enter the race in 2011. Closer to home, in Stockbridge, Edinburgh since 1988, the Stockbridge Community Festival has held the annual Stockbridge Duck Race to raise money for local charities. 1000 rubber ducks are released into the Water of

Leith to float downstream to the fi nishing post at the Falshaw Bridge. For over 25 years, Bibury in Gloucestershire has hosted an annual Duck Race on Boxing Day. The charity event is split into two races; one featuring the iconic yellow ducks, the other featuring the more realistic ‘decoy’ ducks, both held on the River Coln. And on 31st August 2008, the Great British Duck Race was held near Hampton Court Palace in London. The race broke the world record for the number of ducks used together, with a total of 250,000. The ducks used in the race were a bright blue colour, after stewards in the previous year faced problems from spectators throwing their own ducks into the water. But Storrington can hold its head up alongside sister

events with this year’s event set to be better than ever before. If ducks are not your thing, there is plenty more to entertain you. There will be funfair rides and face painting, bouncy castles, hook-a-duck and bat-the-rat, creative craft stalls and gourmet coffee as well as bric-a-brac and the ever popular Dad’s BBQ which will this year be given a run for its money by a mouth watering cake stall. Ducks can be bought on the day for £1 per duck but they are on sale now in the village. Keep your eyes open for anyone waving a clipboard, dig out your purse or wallet and choose your ducks today. PARK & RIDE Finding a trustworthy and reliable garage can be tricky – thankfully at Parkers MOT, Tyre & Service Centre all your motoring needs are met with a smile, and all under one roof Finding a one stop shop for all your motoring needs is like gold dust; I went along to fi nd out just what makes Parkers MOT, Tyre and Service Centre so appealing to car and motorbike owners. Parkers have been trading for 12 years and have developed a solid reputation for honesty, reliability and competitive pricing. They have recently begun to do MOTs for motorbikes; three of the staff are bike enthusiasts and their bike mechanic can do any necessary work to get your bike its certificate. The cost is a very reasonable £29.65 and existing car customers get a further £5 off this price. Should your vehicle need a quick wash, a full valet or anything in-between, Parkers has five levels to choose from, including a wax, interior and exterior polishing and even a full interior shampoo. This is also ideal if you are selling a car, to give it that showroom look, gain the edge on the competition and achieve you a better sale price.
drop off service from the Princess Royal Hospital – but the discount applies to all NHS staff, not just those who work in the locality. Even waiting for your car to have its MOT is made easier by Parkers. The spacious reception room has plentiful seating and a coffee machine and if your car is in for a longer stay, you are welcome to borrow the courtesy car, a Mini Cooper. Prompt service is the norm at Parkers as there are seven members of staff, four of whom are MOT testers. Walking around the garage, I noticed how spacious the premises are. No need to squeeze your car into a queue here as there is ample room for everyone! Parkers byword sums up their insistence on quality and attention to their customers, “The difference is in our service”, a statement that really rings true for this long running centre for everything your car or bike could wish for.
Parkers have recently bought a new jet pressure washer and their qualified staff can remove anything from road mud to paint scratches on your precious paintwork. The company have recently been endorsed by the Council to carry out the Hackney Carriage Test for the next five years, which is a fitness test of the vehicle to ensure that safety standards are met. NHS workers also have a great opportunity from Parkers; a 10% discount and a pick up and

Sussex Living supports the local Mid Sussex community. Send us all your news and events, then read about them here. Model railway exhibition Burgess Hill Model Railway Club was founded in 1951 and in recent years has been recognised for holding a highly successful annual exhibition. Much of this acclaim has arisen through the efforts of the late Mr Christopher Reeve who unfortunately passed away last autumn, but the foundations for the 2016 show were laid down by Mr Reeve before his untimely death. Railway modelling encompasses many different skill sets and can be most rewarding. Skills required can cover carpentry, electrics including digital train control complete with sound, backscene painting, historical research, locomotive and rolling stock construction, scenery recreation just to name a few. This years annual exhibition will be held on Saturday 14th May 2016 at the Burgess Hill School for Girls in Keymer Road and will be open from 10.00 to 17.00. There will be at least 16 layouts on view covering all scales. Supporting the exhibition will be trade suppliers, railway societies as well as some practical demonstrations covering the hobby. Admission prices are being maintained at the 2015 level. Adults £5.00, Children £3.00 and Families £13.00 (2 Adults + 2 Children). Further details covering the exhibition can be found on the club’s Facebook page. Should anybody be interested in joining the club or for further information then please contact us either via the club’s Facebook page or telephone our Hon. Secretary on 01444 244442.
Volunteers needed Do you love a good read and know about books? If you have time to spare, then St Peter & St James Hospice would love to hear from you about volunteering for us. We are fortunate in having piles of books donated to us and this means that we desperately need help in sorting through them. Thérèse Wilson, Head

of Retail, said, “The job would involve sorting donated books into categories, such as Gardening, Local History, Scientific/Technical. Knowledge of book values would be an enormous asset and whilst many books are sold through our shops, anyone with experience of selling books on Amazon/eBay would be a huge help as we intend to grow our e-commerce activities over the coming months.” So, if you could spare one morning or afternoon each week, then we would reallly appreciate your help. To sign up to volunteering, please contact Jane Cook on 01444 470812 or email Jane.Cook@stpeterstjames.org.uk
New Secretary needed Mrs Sylvia Howard will announce at the Hassocks Community Association’s Annual General Meeting on 20th July 2016 that she will be resigning as Secretary to the HCA and Adastra Hall Management Committee This appointment would suit any volunteer who is computer literate and who feels a need to become involved in the local community or has time on their hands such as a recent retiree or perhaps where children have moved on. There is a small annual honorarium. Any person interested who would like more details, please contact Sylvia Howard on 01273 846763 or email sylviahoward21@gmail.com
80 dramatic years Lindfield Dramatic Club, the oldest amateur theatrical group in Mid Sussex, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and will be presenting a number of alternatives to its normal offerings. There will be no spring production in May but, instead, an open day and exhibition on the afternoon of Saturday 28th May, in the Jubilee Room in the King Edward Hall. This will not only chart the club’s history but tell visitors about current and future activities and present an opportunity to talk to members.
At the end of October, in the place of the usual autumn production, a major show is planned that will inform and entertain as it charts the history of the dramatic club. ‘Acting Our Age’ will start with the audience following the progress of the ‘semifictional’ Lindfield Dramatic Club as it puts together an 80th anniversary show and, in the second-half of the evening, the finished show, remembering a handful of the club’s 200-plus productions, is presented to the audience. Productions dates are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 27th, 28th and 29th. Said chairman Rex Cooper: “Eighty years is a long time for any organisation, let alone an amateur dramatic club and we hope that the people of Lindfield will support and enjoy what we are doing to celebrate this landmark.”
Ephemerald flower festival Come and be inspired at Sackville College where the Sussex Area of National Association of Flower Arranging Societies are holding a Festival of Flowers. Talented flower arrangers from Sussex Clubs will be adorning the College and grounds and other local venues with innovative displays to motivate the imagination with over 70 floral creations. We thank the College for letting us celebrate our Emerald Anniversary in this historic place. Fifty-five years is a milestone in our history. We are delighted to include Sackville, among other wonderful venues, to the list the Area has been privileged to decorate. A special highlight is a demonstration entitled ‘Happy Days’, on Friday 3rd June, by National Demonstrator Angela Turner. Highly qualified in the flower world, including 6 Gold Medals at Chelsea, early booking is advised. We hope our Festival will be well attended to support the Sackville Restoration Fund. Please mark 2nd - 4th June in

Push the boat out! Sailing is something other people do isn’t it? No! And this May you can try sailing for free or low cost when RYA Push The Boat Out comes to Mid Sussex. RYA Push The Boat Out is the nationwide ‘have-a-go’ at sailing festival, organised by sailing’s national governing body, that aims to showcase what sailing is really all about, from the freedom of being afloat to the social buzz of club life, while dispelling popular myths around the sport’s accessibility and inclusivity too. Three clubs and centres in Mid Sussex will be giving allcomers the chance to Push The Boat Out with Crawley Mariners YC, on Hedgecourt Lake, East Grinstead scheduled to host their Open Day on Saturday 14th May and Weir Wood SC, at Forest Row, holding their Open Day a week earlier on Saturday 7th May. Meanwhile Ardingly Activity Centre is set to welcome kids to a ‘get involved’ event on Sunday 22nd May. All you will need is some comfortable clothes and old trainers you don’t mind getting wet and, weather depending, a waterproof and/or sunscreen. Buoyancy aids, equipment and safety brief will be provided and refreshments will be available. All event details are to be confirmed and so check the Push The Boat Out website at www. rya.org.uk/go/PTBO for the latest updates.

Stepping behind the scenes at More Radio for the morning, Sara Whatley discovers what it’s like on the other side of the microphone – and just how much fun they have!
Waking up to More I was up with the sparrows as I set off to the More Radio breakfast show. Chris and Hayley welcomed me into their little broadcasting room with a much appreciated cup of tea, and I settled in to listen to their show. Filled with energy and enthusiasm, these two are guaranteed to get your morning off to a good start. The breakfast show is a really engaging one, littered with listener competitions and phone-ins. Just the day before my visit a savvy listener won the weekly ‘what’s the word’ competition on the fi rst day and bagged herself £500! However, the big competition on everybody’s lips is the 5k Forfeit. All you have to do is take a picture of yourself with the new More Radio logo, and you’re into the fi rst round. The second round gets a little stickier, but you will have to stay tuned to fi nd out more… Chris shows me the plan they have for that morning’s show, but to be honest they get easily sidetracked. Hayley came in fi rst thing and announced that she thought her flat was haunted, and so of course this overtook the planned content. A ghost hunter was tracked down and phoned (and thankfully answered his phone that early in the morning!) and tried to put Hayley’s mind at rest. I’m not sure she was convinced though. Although they have only been doing the breakfast show together since February this year, Chris and Hayley
seem like a well oiled machine, and the fun they have together comes across the airwaves. Watching them work is fascinating; Chris is at the helm, surrounded by screens and dials, a mass of jingles and sound bites under his fi ngertips. Hayley jumps up every few minutes to go and record the local traffic reports, making sure everyone is right up to speed for their morning commute. And keeping the listeners up to date with the latest news is Laura. More Radio are passionate about keeping the local things local, and keeping you entertained with good music and interaction. The group that own five radio stations (Arrow FM, Bright FM, Sovereign FM and Splash FM) decided to rename their Sussex stations under the one name of More Radio (but still keeping content specific to their local areas). The benefit is that you can now listen to More Radio seamlessley across most of Sussex, giving the listeners more of what they love.
The big competition on everybody’s lips is the 5k Forfeit – just take a picture with the More Radio logo

Against her father’s wishes, Gelsomina signs up her family’s beekeeping business for the contest as they need the prize money in order to survive and modernise their production of honey. Bake for Sussex Air Ambulance Cakes! Cakes! Cakes! It’s back, so get your whisks ready! Back by popular demand and following
the success of last year’s competition, the Sussex Vale Rotary Club and Hassocks WI have teamed together again to organise a local version of The Bake Off competition in aid of Sussex Air Ambulance. Taking place on 21st May at Adastra Hall in Hassocks, aspiring bakers will be pitting their favourite recipes against each other in the following five categories: Cooked Tray-bake, Chocolate Choice, Victoria Sandwich, Veggie Cake and US Muffins. Bakers can enter as many categories as they wish, each entry costing £2.50. Like last year, there will be two age ranges for Junior bakers, those aged 12 or under and those 13-16. They are asked to prepare decorated cup cakes and are invited to enter the competition at 50p per entry. This is a challenging and fun event which will be assessed by an independent, qualified WI Judge. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each class, with a further prize for the overall baking champion. Refreshments will be available after the judging when the competition cakes will be sold for the benefit of Sussex
Air Ambulance. Entry forms will be available from 2nd May and all entries must be submitted and paid for by 16th May. Check our Facebook page for information and online entry details. All proceeds from the competition will go to Sussex Air Ambulance. For more information please contact Duncan Honeyman 01273 845068.
Do you play whist? Hassocks Good Causes Whist Drive was formed just after the war and played in the old Adastra Hall nissen hut. When the hall was pulled down to make way for the new Adastra Hall we moved to the Age Concern Centre at Dale Avenue, Hassocks and are very happy there. Some of the original members are still supporting us. We have raised a lot of money for local charities, but unfortunately the numbers have reduced over the last year and we very much want to continue. We would welcome anybody to join us. We are a friendly and jolly group who play for fun. People come from far
and wide; East Grinstead, Hurstpierpoint, Hassocks, Haywards Heath, Bolney, Burgess Hill, Pyecombe, Poynings, Partridge Green. We meet at Age Concern Centre, Dale Avenue, Hassocks at 7.15pm on Thursday Nights. £3.50 entrance fees plus raffles. At Christmas we have a very big drive with many excellent prizes. In May the Annual Cup is played for. For further enquiries please call Stella Jenner on 01273 843390. We look forward to hearing from you.

A BOX
to call home
In need of keeping busy and wanting to raise funds for The British Heart Foundation, John Boxall never thought that building bird boxes would bring him so much pleasure When I visited octogenarian John Boxall to fi nd out how and why he makes bird boxes for charity, I found a multitude of talents that lay within this humble, quietly spoken man. When John lost Gilly, his beautiful and beloved wife of 52 years in 2010, he could have given up and retired from life. Instead he made a choice to embrace his new circumstances and keep busy. Decades previously John had built his own bungalow to begin married life; he now decided to put his crafting skills to good use and began making bird boxes to give to family and friends. His neighbour, Tim French gave him
Each box is a well thought out, superbly designed piece of craftsmanship offcuts of wood along with other donations and his fi rst batch are ready to sell. The charity held special meaning for John. Gilly had suffered from heart problems and he decided to give all sale proceeds, after costs, to the research branch of The British Heart Foundation. “I couldn’t stop making them and I can’t believe how much I enjoy it,” he told me before taking me round his garden to show me the numerous styles he now

constructs for different species of birds. It’s obvious that John is as meticulous as he is skilled. Each box is a well thought out, superbly designed piece of craftsmanship. Some have slate roofs, some cedar, all have removable panels for easy cleaning and each entrance hole is designed for certain species including robins, blue tits, sparrows and barn owls. Even the overall house shapes differ; each is unique, sturdy enough to last for many years and fi nished in tasteful muted colours. On 2nd May, John is taking his charity work a stage further by taking a stall at the Rotary Charity Boot Fair in Victoria Park from 8am-1pm. There will be a large selection of boxes on sale starting at £10, which in my opinion is an absolute bargain! As a self-builder, John had to make constant decisions and alterations. Now as a craftsman, he utilises those skills in being able to design any bird box to anyone’s specifications and he is keen to undertake commissions. His son Richard has just set up a Facebook page to sell the boxes online and raise more funds for The British Heart Foundation. Named ‘JohnBoy’s Bird Boxes’, because Gilly always used to call him ‘Johnboy,’ the page will feature designs that can all be purchased online or in person. When he and Gilly were younger, they used to travel all over the country in their caravan, going to jazz festivals, dancing and socialising; John remembered that “we had a wonderful life together.” It’s the inspiration of their relationship that set John on his new trajectory and gave him a new lease of life after her passing. His bird box charity work will give homes to numerous birds while providing much needed funds to the tireless researchers of The British Heart Foundation. John is a true example of how to create a fulfi lling, productive life in the wake of inevitable personal change; keep a watch on his designs and treat the birds in your garden to their very own tailor-made homes. ILLUMINATE
your life
Let Ben Palmer Lighting illuminate your life, your home and your business. Offering both lighting and design in one, this full service is bound to leave you feeling lighter Well planned lighting can alter a room more than any other feature; Ben Palmer set up his business two years ago to help clients understand the extent to which lighting can improve the ambiance of their home or business. Ben Palmer Lighting is a one-stop service for lighting design and installation. Ben spent 10 years as a fully qualified electrician before a diploma in interior design allowed him to realise his passion for lighting design. Frustrated with the conventional and somewhat pedestrian symmetry of most lighting installations, Ben set out to show people what was possible within each individual budget. “I visit the client’s premises, do a drawing, explain the options and if they want to go ahead, we install the lighting too,” he explained. “Most designers don’t offer this complete service but we do the whole package.” Ben discovered his flair for design while he was working on improving the lighting in churches. The difference he made gave him a buzz that set him on a path to champion the potential of a cleverly lit space. “The days of the single light hanging from a central ceiling rose are over,” he said. “Lighting can draw attention to any key feature or area of a room and there are a lot of products out there now.” LEDs are a key
22

component of this awakened potential; more efficient and far more economical than other lighting, they give a wider spread of light and massively reduce running costs. A 7 watt LED is brighter than a standard 50 watt halogen bulb so you can improve a room dramatically without fearing a rise in energy consumption and it’s not necessary to spend a fortune on design and installation. Ben is extremely approachable and clearly isn’t www.sussexliving.com
one of those designers who force their ideas on their clients, he is a good listener who wants to make his clients happy with their eventual choice. Numerous testimonials speak of his good relationships with clients; one wrote “great design ideas, high quality workmanship, always punctual and nothing was ever enough trouble” while another commented that “you won’t be disappointed”. One happy client said he “particularly liked the fact that Ben is an interior designer and electrician so he was able to install lights in a bespoke way rather than a typical symmetrical way.” Ben is keen to reach out to owners of hotels, restaurants and retail premises as well as the domestic applications usually associated with lighting. People are often attracted by subtle lighting while they are dining out and repelled enough by harsh overhead light to avoid stepping through the door in the fi rst place. Ben can maximise a client’s space to attract customers into the premises, concentrating on overall lighting or highlighting certain areas or architectural features to draw attention and interest. For really impressive feature lighting, the space and light of a hotel lobby is the perfect setting. Seen through a glass door from the street the effect is enticing and testifies to the seductive qualities of well designed lighting. Retailers who have worked with Ben in the past really appreciate the bespoke elements of his
Ben can maximise a client’s space to attract customers into the premises, concentrating on overall lighting or highlighting certain areas service. As well as improving energy efficiency and reducing costs, a good lighting design enhances the appearance of products, adding exclusivity and style, for example galleries benefit from discreet feature lighting that doesn’t compete with the artwork but highlights it for optimum effect. Ben sources lights from local suppliers whenever possible. Most people don’t have huge budgets and domestic customers often want to concentrate on kitchen and lounge lighting as these are the rooms most in use. And it is something which can be tackled at any stage – it can be retrofitted or designed into a scheme that is being built. Ben explained how he can give clients different types of ambience in the same room, enhancing the eventual scheme with the use of dimmer switches, which provide a simple way to control mood in a space. From quote to design generally takes under 10 days and once a design is agreed upon, work can begin. As part of NICEIC, all work is certificated under a ‘platinum promise’ and Ben’s company is given a yearly inspection to make sure
it is compliant. He also offers a year’s guarantee for fi xtures. “We are very reliable, good at communicating and confi rm all work by text or email,” he told me before adding, “We always get back to people and we listen to our clients instead of telling them what to choose.” Because Ben’s background is technical, his business utilises the unique combination of aesthetics and practical ability to realise the client’s dream. Exterior lighting is another realm of potential in the home. Highlighting feature trees or plants makes the garden a useable focal point long after the sun has set and reflections in windows can even be eradicated to enjoy the full effect from indoors. Ben’s clients are fast realising the benefits of a design service that can install the lighting as well and he has carved a niche by offering a rare combination of services. Along with his wife, Stephanie and mother-in-law, Jackie, Ben Palmer Lighting is a family business that aims to bring a better quality of light to clients in Sussex and far beyond.

ENVIRONMENT
BY RUTH LAWRENCE
LAZY LAWN Sometimes not cutting your lawn can do wonders for your garden. Creating your own mini meadow is fun, super bug friendly and pretty too – not to mention easy! Although it’s easy to be demoralised reading statistics telling us that children are losing connection with nature, there are plenty of ways that the younger generation are being encouraged to engage with the natural world on their doorstep. The RSPB has begun an excellent campaign which helps you give nature a home, beginning in your garden and extending into the wider neighbourhood; over the following months I’ll be looking at the ways in which anyone, not only the young, can learn to help wildlife flourish in their locality. One of the easiest ways you can encourage creatures into your garden is ironically to do less. Leaving your mower in the shed or just letting parts of your lawn grow long not only saves time but gives myriad species a chance to live, breed and thrive. Grasses will set seed and wildflowers, those essential foodstuffs of insects, will take the opportunity to bloom and create a sheltered mini jungle which is the perfect habitat for beetles and other tiny creatures. Since I gave the lawnmower a rest, I’ve seen tiny lizards, large black beetles, toads and slow worms emerge from the grass; it’s incredibly satisfying to realise that you have helped create an ideal habitat simply by leaving nature alone to evolve as she should. Cutting the grass at the end of summer mimics the old fashioned
hay meadows. Children love to run through long grass, hiding and meeting tiny and highly important members of the animal kingdom close up. Bees and other pollinators visit flowers on the wild lawn, butterfl ies will grace the garden and with luck, sparrows and goldfi nches will fly down to feed on the seeds. If you decide to leave areas of lawn to grow long, remember that grasses create a softer look when allowed to grow around trees or shrubs and a natural looking path can be mown in curves through longer grass.

SUSSEX LIVING May 2016
Some creatures like using shorter grass to travel through the meadow and they dart into the longer grass to get food or hide. If you wish to create a spring meadow, you could leave the grass long until July and then mow until autumn or if you prefer a summer meadow, mow once in early April and then leave until September, mowing once or twice in the autumn. When summer graces the garden with a warm day, you can see which flowering plants have emerged that were previously prevented from appearing such as purple clovers, delicate daisies or striking blue speedwells. The RSPB website gives easy to follow ideas for ways to help nature and involve children in taking responsibility for the wild world; they are the ones who will inherit the role as caretakers for their local environment. There are many pleasures to be enjoyed from visiting gardens. Whether you’re looking for design and planting inspiration, or simply to enjoy the spectacular beauty of a summer display. So, why not connect gardening with giving, with a visit to Plumpton Open Gardens, a fundraising event for the local St Peter & St James Hospice. Every year the residents of Plumpton open their gardens to the public for a small entry fee with all proceeds donated to the local hospice. “The gardens on show rotate and this year we’re aiming for those centred in the middle of the village, within walking distance of the village hall,” explains Terry Thompsett, who together with Gill Gamble, organises the annual open gardens event. “It’s a good way to see a range of different gardens and to revisit gardens from previous years, to see how they may have changed and matured.” This year Plumpton Open Gardens will take place on Sunday 26th June, comprising around 12 gardens central to the village, where visitors can enjoy homemade cakes, cream teas, free parking and toilet facilities. For a small donation of £5, visitors can enjoy as many gardens as they choose, or single entry is available for £1, with

Events include quiz nights, tabletop sales and a festive fair and the group are always on the look out for volunteers. There is no need to make a huge commitment, but if you would like to get involved baking cakes, serving tea or donating raffle prizes, please contact Terry on the details below. “While we don’t raise millions, all the small amounts soon add up,” says Terry. “Once you mention the word hospice,

The treatment at the hospice is second to none and helping to make things easier for those needing help is a huge source of satisfaction.” St Peter & St James is hosting its own Garden Party on Saturday 21st May, where you can enjoy the wonderful work of their volunteer gardeners, see the Reflective Garden, meet the donkeys, buy home grown local plants and produce and sample homemade refreshments. There is also a full Open Garden Programme, running from May to August with over 60 local gardens taking part. So if you can’t get along to Plumpton, either check out St Peter & St James’ website (www. stpeter-stjames.org.uk), or pick up a leaflet in one of their shops for further details of the Garden Party and full Open Gardens programme. Ladywell
Gardens Tended over 17 years to become the inspiring garden it is today, Ladywell undulates over landscaped grounds and is accompanied by the tinkling of a natural spring Sarah and Robert Salisbury’s garden has been a labour of love. It has taken 17 years to achieve an idyllic acre of tranquillity from an initially unpromising plot. I spoke to Sarah who maintains the garden while Robert attends to all the essential construction of ponds and outbuildings. She admitted that she was daunted by the hilly, wet terrain all those years ago; “The garden was full of grass, crazy paving and conifers,” she recalled. “I bought three trees that I’d always wanted and took it from
there.” Now, those three trees each form a stunning focus in their own right; a statuesque ‘wedding cake’ tree, a Magnolia Grandiflora and a Judas Tree, whose flowers appear before its leaves. Inspired by Wakehurst Place and Sheffield Park, Sarah has skilfully blended elements of these world famous gardens into her own undulating, landscaped grounds. The slope proved to be the garden’s making, lending it the feel of a varied landscape, leading the eye through several levels to the view of the Downs to the south. There is a natural spring which has enabled Sarah to construct a series of ponds, joined by a rill; the effect is both entirely naturalistic and enlivening. The sound of running water gently adds to the relaxing feel of the garden, balanced by wind-rustled leaves above and birdsong travelling up from the wild garden below. Birds love the combination of water and wilderness, while people appreciate the beauty and contrast of this cleverly designed garden; there are combinations of colour, texture and seasonal planting at every turn. Hosts of white lilies contrast with purple-pink Pulmonaria, a favourite with bees, while the orange twigs of a pollarded Willow seem to shine in evening light. Sarah has encouraged wildlife into the garden; a stoat has taken up residence and the pond is a haven for newts, many of whom I watched swimming in dappled afternoon light. Robert has built a continued on page 30

substantial greenhouse and a characterful shed which boasts an artificial swallows nest, inspired by the real one that graced the old shed. All three varieties of woodpecker are regular visitors and a heron occasionally steals a goldfish from the large pond at the bottom of the garden. Standing at the ‘summit’ of the garden, the land falls gradually away, revealing different vistas at each level. The whole effect is tied together by the ponds, which weave their way down and suggest a journey rather than a static view. Practicality

has not been forgotten in this garden either with a substantial vegetable patch catering for the kitchen, while fruit trees provide a decent crop of apples, pears and plums. This is the first time Ladywell has been part of the NGS Open Gardens; Sarah and Robert are busy constructing a rockery which should be ready for the open day on the 2nd of June. HOME ZONE Is your home in a pickle of multi-use rooms? Do you long for flowing spaces and room to breath? Read on to learn about zoning and defi ning your home for a beautiful and organised living area With homes getting smaller and many of us living in more open plan spaces, it can be difficult to fi nd enough room for all of the family’s belongings and even more difficult to keep them tidy. For while open plan living can offer bright, airy and great entertaining space, it offers little in the way of privacy and the lack of clearly defi ned spaces can make it look and feel chaotic on a daily basis. Happily, these issues can be easily solved with some simple home decorating tricks, helping you to create smaller more intimate and functional zones. Here’s our guide to space planning which will transform your home into a neat, tidy and orderly house.
STUDY YOUR HABITS
Do you or your family members often lose keys, umbrellas or sunglasses? Do you usually work and study in the kitchen, or craft in the dining room? The

best way to start organising is to think about all of the activities performed in your home. This will give you a list of zones that need to be created. For example, do you need an incoming/outgoing zone
Creating division with contrasting materials is another stylish option for zoning
where items like keys, phones, umbrellas, scarves, gloves, hats and sunglasses can be kept? Do you need a bill paying zone? A craft zone? Entertainment zone? Work and study zone? By going through this process you will begin to understand how you live in your home and what activities need defi ned spaces and organisation.
THINK ABOUT STORAGE
Once you have identified the items required for each zone in your home, you can then organise them by investing in some proper storage. There is a whole industry out there devoted to storage and with such a vast choice available, you should fi nd something to suit your style. Creating an in/out area could include a console table by the front door, a ceramic bowl or tray for keys, a tall basket for umbrellas, a coat stand and some type of shoe storage. Think about cupboards, fi ling cabinets, storage trunks, bookcases, wooden boxes and baskets for your belongings. If you work or pay bills in the kitchen, think about using a drawer or cupboard to store what you need. Purpose continued on page 34

built storage is also a great option if you’re clear about your needs.
Another simple way to define a zone in your home is through the use of colour. So, you could paint one wall a different colour to the rest of the room, to create an office or entrance zone. Or, you could wallpaper one wall to define a space. Alternatively, the colour of the furniture could act as the definition, so office furniture could all be grey, while the rest of the furniture in the living space has tones of blue or green.
CREATING ZONES
Each room in your house is already a zone for sleeping, cooking or relaxing, but these spaces can be further divided to organise your space and how you live in it. There are many interesting ways to do this including the use of colour, materials and furniture.
FLOORING
If your home is small or open plan, it might be wise to stick to one type of flooring throughout to create a spacious and airy effect. If this is the case, you could use rugs to define zones with specific functions within a room. This will create a more harmonious flow to the space than putting up a physical barrier. Depending on your style, you could use rugs in similar colour tones for a contemporary understated feel, antique rugs to create a more homely feel, or you could break up the space with clashing colours and patterns to create drama.
The best way to start organising is to think about all of the activities performed in your home If you have a large space, different flooring is an easy way to create definition. For instance, an open plan kitchen could have contrast flooring for cooking and eating areas. Alternatively, you could create different floor levels with a small step up or down, which would instantly create two separate areas.

Creating division with contrasting materials is another stylish option for zoning. For example, in a bedroom the main sleeping areas might contain luxurious fabrics like velvet and silk, while a zone set aside for work uses wooden furniture to create contrast and focus.

allow the maximum light into the area, or a fold out screen is easily moved and can be used as required. However, if you want a more dramatic barrier, hanging a curtain from the ceiling is a cheap and simple way to divide a room. To maximise light use a sheer fabric, choose a heavier option for total privacy, or to create a feature wall select a patterned or textured curtain to add interest.
PHYSICAL BARRIERS
Furniture can also be used to divide up a room, by simply arranging it to carve up a space into an eating and relaxing
zone. Another alternative is to use see-through storage, like a display case. This option will not block out any light, will look great and can be
moved if you need to reconfigure the room. Art in the form of sculpture and installations can also make a stylish statement as a room divider, allowing you to create separate spaces without losing light or the flexibility to reorganise the space.

Into the
Veg Patch The spring is really hotting up now which means the garden is bursting into life, your veg patch most of all. Get children involved in planting and make it a fun family activity In May, all areas of the garden are crying out for your attention, but the vegetable patch shouts the loudest of all. There’s so much to do! Never mind, with these early sunrises, you can start work at 5am… Runner and French beans can be sown outside now. You can sow direct into the ground, but I like to start them off in small pots, transplanting into their final positions when they’re about 10cms high. This way you’ll have sturdy plants that will be less vulnerable to slug or bird damage. Beans hate root disturbance but will barely notice the move if you take the trouble to sow them in individual pots. This is an activity that youngsters can get involved in – the large seeds are easy for little fingers to handle. Sowing fast-growing salads is another way to get children interested in gardening. A supermarket bag of salad leaves is expensive, but a £1 packet of ‘mixed leaf’ seeds makes enough plants to last all summer long. They grow brilliantly in containers. A cheap and cheerful
38
S u ss e x L i v i n g May 2016
plastic trough will do the job, so long as it will hold 10-15cms depth of soil. The plants will only root down a few centimetres, but the bulk of soil will hold in moisture and act as an insulator, preventing the soil warming up too much. If the roots become hot, your plants will ‘bolt’ and run to seed. When it comes to harvesting, carefully snip off the youngest growing shoots, leaving the bulk of the plant behind. Each plant will regenerate half a dozen times or more, making more leaves for you to enjoy. Kiddies’ plastic scissors will easily cut through the soft stems, so youngsters can help with harvesting too.
If you don’t have a veg plot, salads that do well in containers include radishes, spring onions, and the small ‘ball-type’ carrots and beetroot
If you don’t have a veg plot, other salads that do well in containers include radishes, spring onions, and the small ‘ball-type’ carrots and beetroot. Many vegetables will tolerate light shade and the beauty of growing things in containers is that you can move them around and experiment with different locations. Even if you only have a tiny paved patio, there are vegetables to suit, and most herbs will do better in a pot than in heavy Sussex clay. Tomato plants are on sale everywhere now. Avoid those looking lanky or yellowed; they have been in their pots far too long. Don’t stick to the same old varieties; try something new. Giant ‘beefsteak’ types are great for slicing or stuffing, ‘plum’ tomatoes contain fewer seeds, making them ideal for sauces, while ‘cherries’ add colour and sweetness to salads. Cherry-types also make fantastic displays in patio pots. A container filled with ‘Sungold’ tomatoes, French marigolds, parsley and basil is a feast for the body - and the soul. www.sussexliving.com

If you are thinking about increasing the value of your home, either to enjoy yourself or to sell at a higher price, this how-to guide will point you in the right direction
Increase the value
of your home
There are a number of ways to increase the value of your home but the first step is to decide why, as this could have a bearing on the works you carry out. Are you looking to live in your current home for many years or is this a short term improvement with a view to selling at a higher price?
Beautifully presented bathrooms can woo buyers and the cost of bathrooms is now quite reasonable bearing in mind the X factor they provide to a potential buyer. Swimming pools are not necessarily going to add value to your home. If you
Buyers determine the value of a property Increasing the value of your property means providing things that buyers seek. Fabulous quality kitchens with the latest gadgets attract buyers. In recent years the desire for a large kitchen has grown as life styles change and the kitchen becomes the hub of the household. Looking at the possibility of an extension to accommodate this type of family living should be considered.

Extensions and sun lounges
Sun lounges are very popular, particularly if you build on your southern or western flank. A more serious build, of say a self contained annexe, can often make a considerable difference to a property’s value as it can be looked upon as an additional abode and its value added to that of the original house.
Evaluate your current property before you begin investing
It is important to know the current value of your home. If you spend a great deal of money on a house in a road which cannot take a high priced property then some of your potential profit will be eroded. For instance, if you have a house in a road of similar properties then its value will have a ceiling. If you out price your property, buyers will seek a better road in a more desirable location.
pollutants. Fitted quickly and easily they can prove popular with buyers keen to purchase a home where running costs can be kept to a minimum as they can generate electricity even on a cloudy day.
What determines the value of a home? are going to enjoy the facilities for years then maybe you could indulge yourself but they require maintenance and heating and these factors can in some cases deter buyers.
Supply and demand can make a difference to the value. An estate agent will value free of charge (usually if you are seriously considering marketing) and they will judge it on their local knowledge, the current market, what it is offering buyers and your home’s presentation.
Solar panels
Good quality equates to value
These are proving very popular as home owners appreciate the amazing savings on energy bills and of course the fact they are environmentally friendly as they do not release any harmful carbon dioxide or other
If the fixtures and fittings or building work is to a high standard then this can make a considerable difference to the value of your home. History has shown that house prices, particularly in the south east, generally rise. www.sussexliving.com

ingredients into a pestle and mortar or a food blender until they form a thick paste, then stir in the chilli. Score the chicken and rub the marinade in, cover then place in the fridge overnight or 2-3 hrs. 2. If the weather is nice prepare your BBQ to temperature. Alternatively heat up the grill. Cook the chicken breasts for 20-30 minutes, turning occasionally, and baste now and then with any leftover sauce.
3. Whilst the chicken is cooking rince the rice in plenty of cold water then tip into a large pan with all of the other ingredients. Add salt to season, bring to the boil then turn down to a medium heat, cover and cook for 10 minutes or until the rice is done. 4. Let the rice stand for a few minutes before serving with the chicken. A squeeze of fresh lime and sprinkle of coriander really zing with the flavours.

The Fig Tree With a warm and friendly welcome and locally sourced produce cooked with flair and imagination, it’s no wonder that the Fig Tree in Hurstpierpoint has such a loyal following Serving up fine dining in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the Fig Tree has been run by David and Monika for almost a decade. While David works behind the scenes creating seasonal dishes from quality local ingredients, Monika works at the front of house creating an inviting and hospitable dining room. We visited for Sunday lunch, particularly enjoying a starter of scallops with crispy bacon and Manchester caviar (a house speciality) and the beetroot and vodka cured salmon gravlax with hot smoked mackerel, apple and horseradish rillette, crème fraiche and warm buttermilk blinis. Both dishes were beautifully presented with wonderful combinations of flavour and texture. Mains are generous and offer a great choice of meats, fish and vegetarian dishes. We chose roast sirloin of beef (served with a heavenly roast gravy) and pan-fried fillet of wild sea bass with baby spinach, green beans and chive beurre blanc. Deserts were a temptation. We couldn’t resist and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the mango

curd with Pina Colada sherbet as a refreshing note to end on. And there is so much more. For chocoholics, locally produced chocolate from J. Cocoa made the Marquise with caramel and praline ice cream a real treat. Alternatively, David’s homemade sorbets and ice creams, or deserts as traditional as sticky toffee pudding round off the perfect meal.
“We’re enjoying developing more vegetarian options, but if anyone has any special requirements or allergies we are happy to accommodate,” explains Monika
TASTE SENSATION Diners will find the Fig Tree menu is impressive both in its scope and quality of the food. From Tuesday evening to Friday lunch there is a set menu at £18 for lunch and £20 for dinner. Vegetarians will find a good choice of dishes on the menu. In fact, most dietary requirements can be catered for. “We’re enjoying developing more vegetarian options, but if anyone has any special requirements or allergies we are happy to accommodate if they let us know beforehand,” explains Monika. Throughout the menu, you’ll fi nd carefully chosen wine recommendations. “We’ve always used South Downs cellars as our

The prices start at £28 for a threecourse meal, and private use of the restaurant is offered to parties of 20-40 diners. With its wonderful food, ambience and outstanding value, visits to The Fig Tree deliver for every occasion, whether it’s lunch with friends and family, a celebratory party or a table for two.
From Tuesday evening to Friday lunch there is a set menu at £18 for lunch and £20 for dinner wine merchant and run wine tasting evenings throughout the year. Anyone interested can find details of up and coming events on our website,” Monika tells me.
Using local suppliers is important to the couple. Being part of the local community is also important to David and Monika who always take part in the Hurst Festival. They also support local schools and charity events throughout the year. While the restaurant prides itself on fine dining, the charming informality makes it a great place for a relaxed lunch or dinner. So, whether you fancy just a salad or some scallops with a glass of wine, or a coffee with one of the amazing deserts, the Fig Tree is a great place to meet and catch up with friends.

Enjoy theowns Sussex D Cake. Rhubarb. Custard. These are three of my favourite words so it seemed an obvious choice of recipe to share with you. This enchanting cake is a lovely teatime treat but served warm (with extra custard, of course) it makes an equally special pudding.
Ingredients 400g fresh rhubarb (or frozen) 250g butter 150g ready made custard (the long life type, not chilled) 250g gluten free self-raising flour ½ tsp gluten free baking powder 4 medium eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 250g caster sugar 1. Pre-heat the oven to 200C, gas mark 6. 2. Chop the rhubarb into roughly 2cm pieces and place on a baking tray, cover with foil and roast for around 15 minutes, until tender. 3. Drain the juices and set aside to fully cool. 4. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C, gas mark 4. 5. Take approximately 3 tbsp

of the ready made custard and set aside. 6. Beat the remaining custard with the butter, flour, baking powder, eggs, sugar and vanilla until you have a smooth, creamy cake mix. 7. Transfer around a third of the cake mix into a greased and lined spring form cake tin (9 inches/23cm). Scatter half of the cooled rhubarb on top, then repeat (holding back a few pieces of rhubarb for decoration), finishing with the last third of the cake mix on top. 8. Dot the saved rhubarb and custard on the very top of the cake. It may look a little rough around the edges but it’s part of the charm. 9. Bake for around 30 minutes, then cover with foil and bake for a further 20 mins.
Believe it or not you can buy ‘custard essence’ if you look in the right places… keep your eye out and replace the vanilla extract with custard essence if you can find it. However, it tends to be very concentrated so you won’t need anywhere near as much!

Food for Body & Soul Feed your body and soul at Mama Ghanoushe in Hassocks, a bright and zingy café serving delicious and wholesome food, sugar free sweet treats and vegan wines Mama Ghanoushe Café on Hassocks High Street is a temple to all things fresh and fruity. From the bright, zesty artworks of fruit adorning the white walls and zingy, citrus-hued furniture to the abundant bowls of fresh vegetables sitting like a still life on the bar area ready to be juiced – it’s a joy to behold. I arrive early for breakfast on a sunny Wednesday morning and already there’s a regular sitting comfortably with his small dog on the sofa enjoying the chilled out background music with a steaming coffee. Everything is spotlessly clean and the high-ceilinged space is bright, airy and tastefully decorated with industrial style lighting and a glorious copper clad bar as the centerpiece. Behind here is where the magic happens and founder and owner Rachael Burrows, a.k.a. ‘Mama Rachael’, cooks up a storm of truly delightful vegan and vegetarian recipes in her open plan kitchen. I start with the café’s best-selling smoothie ‘The Green Goddess’ made from avocado, spinach, apple and lime. It’s beautifully presented with fresh alfalfa sprouts and a mint sprig adorning the top. Creamy, limey and subtly sweet, I feel virtuous starting the day with such a delicious and healthy concoction. Next arrives a generous plate of perfectly poached eggs on toasted gluten-free bread with halloumi cheese and roasted tomatoes on a bed of Swiss chard. It’s a work of art, bursting with colour and contrast. Needless to say it tastes absolutely divine. The eggs are full of flavour (they are free range from a farm down the road), and the crispy grilled halloumi is doused in a chilli dressing that is neither too hot nor too sweet. The baby vine tomatoes are super sweet and juicy and go wonderfully with the cumin seeds they are cooked in. Even my coffee is a delight – nutty, flavoursome and just the ticket. It comes as no surprise that Rachael is a Cordon Bleu trained chef who has worked in the catering
business at the highest level. Her business is something that happened organically and grew out of a love of wholesome food and a healthy lifestyle. “I’ve always loved food and cooking. My friends used to buy meals from me, which progressed to me opening a pop up café in my living room, then a café in Hurst and now we are in Hassocks!” says Rachael. “It’s been great”, she continues. “Young and old really appreciate what’s on offer, and my children, Myles, Heather and Willow are really proud of me.” Everything is homemade on the premises and locally sourced where possible. It’s also perfect for coeliacs as the food is gluten free as well as vegan and vegetarian but can be adapted with cheese if people fancy. It’s also incredibly well priced with main courses starting at only £7.50. There are vegan wines on offer, as well as sugar free cakes and all food can be made into children’s portions too. With yoga classes in the evening and a wine bar planned for the summer, Mama Ghanoushe is already becoming a hub of the community. Watch this space – it’s going to be huge.

Sugar Rush This 7-14th May is National Doughnut Week, and for those with a sweet tooth the perfect excuse to indulge in one (or more!) of these very naughty but very nice treats Back at the turn of the year when the snow lay deep, crisp and even on the front of Christmas cards, it was kindly suggested to me that National Doughnut Week would be a perfect topic for this correspondent. To be fair to that particular individual, back in sixth form I could get through ten doughnuts in about an hour. With a few years experience nestling comfortably around my belt I’ve got the time down to around fi fteen minutes and would consider myself as knowledgeable on the subject, but not quite the connoisseur that others do. Doughnut origins remain unclear. It’s known that 19th century Dutch settlers took them to the United States. While Hanson Gregory from Rockport, Maine, in the USA, made a claim to inventing the ring doughnut in 1847, while aboard a sailing ship. A preceding claim from 1800 was from Elizabeth Dimsdale of Hertfordshire. Regardless of their creator, doughnuts are a

simple fried food containing the basic ingredients of flour, sugar, butter, eggs, yeast, milk and salt. Dustings of icing sugar, glazes or fi llings are very much the personal choice of the baker. One way or another, doughnuts are eaten all over the world with many derivations and deviations from the original concept. From bakeries, supermarkets, this way or that way, large or small I’ve eaten them all and enjoyed the lot. Across the Atlantic, it’s the Canadians that consume the most doughnuts per capita on earth, averaging 28.44 per person per year. So it looks like I best head west for my National Doughnut Week challenge, and take on a nation!

LOCAL WALK
Ashdown Forest Walk With beautiful views across the Sussex Weald to the distant North Downs and golden gorse bushes adorning your way, this lovely three and a half mile walk around the Ashdown Forest is perfect for a warm May day This 3.5 mile walk starts and fi nishes from the car park at the Ashdown Forest Visitor Centre which is situated opposite the Ashdown Forest Hotel on the Coleman’s Hatch Road approximately one mile east of the Wych Cross traffic lights on the A22. For satnav enthusiasts the postcode is RH18 5JP! It initially follows a wide forest track affording superb views across the Sussex Weald to the distant North Downs. There is a short section across the Forest Row Golf Course which is marked on the Ordnance Survey map as a right of way (and is also Access Land) but is a little tricky to navigate as the route isn’t signed or waymarked. A compass might come in handy on this section of the walk! I would mention that much of Ashdown Forest has been dedicated as Access Land so you can wander at will unchallenged. From the back of the car park adjoining the centre, bear right and follow the wide forest track along a ridge running parallel with the road. Ignore all turnings off to your left and right. The track drops downhill slightly and enters woodland. On reaching a crossing track close to a car park, turn left and then right on to the open forest again still with extensive views northwards. On reaching an unsurfaced drive turn left, and walk downhill to a lone house marked on the map as The Birches. At The Birches, strike out across the fairway in a north-westerly direction (this is where a compass reading will be useful!) until the buildings of Water Farm appear in the trees to your right. Once across the fairway, pick up a narrow rather overgrown path by a sign regarding grazing rights with Water
Farm to your right. The path drops downhill to cross a small stream via stepping stones. Climb steeply uphill beside Foxbury Wood. On reaching a gravel drive by an open area, carry on ahead on this drive where a sign indicates 150 yards to the 14th tee. Just before reaching a dwelling veer left off the drive and pick up a narrow and slightly indistinct path through woodland which drops downhill to cross a stream on a small footbridge then follow the path uphill to Bank Cottage and the golf course. Turn left at Bank Cottage, and take the obvious path ahead initially alongside woodland, soon to enter Broadstone Warren. Follow the slightly meandering path for about a mile through continued on page 56

continued from page 55
Broadstone Warren ignoring all turnings off to your left and right. After about ¾ mile, a signpost directs you left to join the drive to Broadstone Farm. Turn right up the drive to join the Coleman’s Hatch Road opposite the Ashdown Park Hotel. Turn left alongside the road on a raised footway to the Visitor Centre and car park. NB: The Ashdown Forest Centre is a useful information point for both residents and visitors. There is usually an interesting exhibition to be viewed. The centre has seasonal opening times so best to check the website to be sure that it is open when you plan to do the walk. We are very grateful to Les Campbell for bringing us new and exciting local walks every month. A founder member and former Chairman of the Mid Sussex Ramblers, he is a very experienced and enthusiastic walker indeed. Les insists on testing all routes personally, making sure they are suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. Dear Sussex Living... …The Rotary Club of Cuckfield & Lindfield were absolutely delighted with the article published in Sussex Living for January, 2016. Our warmest congratulations go to Robert Veitch for compiling an outstanding article, which was much more than we could have ever hoped for in promoting the Sponsored Darts Marathon 2016. The presentational format was excellent in a qualitative magazine, where the varied contents and the production standards are exceptionally high. Our Sponsored Darts Marathon is now in full swing and the Club is enjoying running the event with the participation of just over twenty teams at present. The sponsorship monies raised are also progressing very well. The event will continue to run for around another two months, after which the popular “Presentation Evening” will be held

Bag it! Yes, the ultimate bag really does exist – roomy enough for work and play, practical, hands-free, casual or smart, make the backpack your bag of the season You can’t enter this spring/summer season without owning one of the bags of the moment – a backpack. It’s what all trendseekers will own (several of) already, so if you want to keep in the loop, now’s the time to find the perfect one for you. Luckily, as with all major trends, you won’t have far to go before finding one you like, as the High Street is chock-a-block with backpacks in all shapes and sizes. To find one that perfectly suits your individual style, just imagine your everyday look and match a bag of your liking to that. If you’re a sporty soul, then putting a bigger, not-so-dainty backpack with your sleek trousers and sharp sweater is a match made in heaven. Having the luxury of hands-free is everything this season and allows you to have a break from the constant slipping down and adjusting of a shoulder bag. A backpack also gives an urban edge to your look: pair with utilitarian cover-alls or with the hip ‘city-look’ combination of plimsolls, turtleneck, A-line denim skirt and bomber jacket. Backpacks aren’t only for ‘casual’ dress: sleeker and smaller models are available in abundance as well, but they

still channel that young carefree spirit that’s perfect for the warmer weather. You can even pretend it’s a handbag with a few extra straps on it, as many have a top handle too. Neater and chicer than the bigger versions, the ‘new backpack’ comes in many different varities; there are minimalist versions of clean, black leather or suede in flattering shapes with no fancy detailing, or louder, fun versions of embellished, furry bags in exciting colours to choose from. You can wear these classy bags with any of your usual wardrobe – dresses, flowery skirts, elaborate shirts and heels – they can be worn with anything! Styling the actual bag is fun too – whether you are a ‘twostrapper’, a ‘sling-over-oneshoulder’ or a ‘grasp-by-thetop-handleand-carry-like-
a-handbag’ kind of gal, it’s all down to your mood and outfit. One thing’s for sure, the old school knapsack look is gone and backpacks have never looked cooler! Sophisticated, workfriendly and large enough to hold everything you carry around, instead of having multiple extra bags, it’s a fail-safe addition to your handbag collection. This old 90s favourite has taken both the catwalk and the High Street by storm in a truly great comeback and is the perfect must-have accessory for spring and summer. Wear to work, days out or even as hand luggage as you jet off on your holidays, it’s practical and provides an easy way into the ‘trendy crowd’. So ditch your cross body bags and handbags, at least for the upcoming summer months, and gear up with a few backpacks – one for every occasion! www.sussexliving.com

Cycling doesn’t have to mean dressing up like you’re competing in the Tour de France. It has always been the chicest form of travel – while others are stuck in traffic, you can just breeze by and look amazing as you go! Now that summer’s almost here and bikes are out again in full force, why not consider giving the car a rest and hopping on your bike instead? While digging your bike out of the garage or shed, don’t forget their important role in the female emancipation movement of the late 19th century. Back then they not only came to symbolise the ‘New Woman’ but also spearheaded ‘rational dress’ in which women could finally liberate themselves from their corsets and ankle length skirts and wear movement-friendly bloomers instead. In some countries, like Holland, biking is still a major part of everyday life and biking outfits can be anything your imagination allows – envision pottering down country lanes with a basket full of freshly baked bread,

the sun on your face and wind in your hair, wearing a jaunty A-line denim skirt with heels (sounds scary but it’s doable!). ‘Cycle chic’ is really easy. For biking to work or to meet friends, a silk top and gingham slingbacks or a frilly summer dress and flats are just some examples of the many outfit options to choose from. If you’re undecided, consider this: biking isn’t only environmentally friendly but will also keep you in shape for the swimsuit season!

Let’s
Dance!
Body Buzz Time to get those dancing shoes on and try some
It’s May, traditionally the start of summer and if you are looking to shake up your fitness regime or want to try something totally new, then now is the time to get dancing! With so many dance styles on offer now in the UK from salsa and ceroc to ballroom and belly dancing and a whole host of classes throughout Sussex, there’s no excuse not to get those dancing shoes on. The benefits of dancing are numerous and varied depending on what dance option you go for. By its very nature dance in general is attractive to human beings because moving to music stimulates the senses – sight, sound and touch, helping to make it fun and raise endorphins into the bargain. It’s also the democratic choice, in that there’s normally a dance style out there to suit every age and ability. Dancing is a great way to improve overall fitness because along with offering a cardiovascular workout, it

can also strengthen and tone muscles and improve posture, balance and flexibility. Unsurprisingly, regular dance sessions can help to burn calories too with a half an hour dance session burning at least 100 calories for an average-sized person and something as high intensity as salsa burning as much as 480 calories per hour if done properly. Not just brilliant for you physically, dancing can also benefit your grey matter. Learning new dance steps and routines can keep you mentally active by stimulating working memory. Along with this, exercise improves circulation in the body and in turn oxygen to the brain. Then there’s the social side of things and the potential to form new friendships – a winwin situation.
Participating in dance classes can also build physical stamina as the music keeps you going and keeps you coming back for more – ideal for those who fi nd the gym a bit boring or hard to stick to. So what dance steps are on offer in our beautiful corner of Sussex? Here’s a small selection. Fancy doing some jive talkin? Then there’s ceroc – best described as jive but with minimal footwork. Always wanted to do ballet but missed out as a child? Then there’s adult ballet and jazz for beginners on offer across most of Sussex. Want amazing upper body strength and toning whilst gaining tonnes of body confidence? Then pole dancing may be for you. If you’re dying to listen to some great music whilst shimmying along like Ginger Rogers or Fred Astaire, get your tap shoes on and get stuck in. As one quote goes, “There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them”. So what are you waiting for?
CAUTION: If you are unsure of any new exercise regime please consult your GP before commencing.

Andrew says, “ Dental implants have been a saviour for those patients with uncomfortable dentures and others that have lost teeth and are unable to chew properly. Modern materials are far more natural looking and numbing techniques virtually pain free. Paul has been a valuable addition both to the team here at Oakmead and also to the local community. Patients no longer have to travel to implant clinics further afield because we also accept referrals from other local surgeries. His surgical expertise at Oakmead has also meant patients don’t have to join long waiting lists for wisdom tooth removal and other surgical procedures.” Paul qualified from Queen’s University Belfast, and completed Postgraduate training in Oral Surgery and Sedation at The University of Bristol. He has worked in practices specializing in Implantology and Oral Surgery for 15 years, and has received training from leaders in Dental Implantology and bone-grafting. Implant treatments offered by Paul range from the replacement of a single missing tooth right through to fixed alternatives for denture wearers. On a more personal level, he is a keen musician and has played guitar in a number of bands, although it appears his music career is destined to remain purely amateur!

Be Dementia
Aware
The 15th-21st May is Dementia Awareness Week, and your chance to get involved, volunteer and really make a difference to someone’s life. Read on to fi nd out what’s happening near you Anne Jones, the Mayor of Burgess Hill recently popped into our office to tell us about Dementia Awareness Week, which gets under way on May 15th. It’s being marked in Mid Sussex with a series of events. Anne was quick to tell me, “Dementia is a cruel disease, it can affect young people, as well as the elderly. But, people living with dementia can still use their gifts and talents, they don’t stop being just because of the diagnosis.” Dementia covers a broad range of diseases that affect the brain, causing long-term decline in an individual’s ability to think clearly and to function properly. The most common form is Alzheimer’s disease whereby brain cells are lost over time. Dementia is progressive and care needs to be increased as the condition advances.

In Haywards Heath on the same day there will be a Dementia Friends Awareness Session at the Town Hall (2-4pm). Visitors will be able to learn five essential facts about dementia, as well as where to fi nd additional support. The Haywards Heath Dementia Action Group has arranged this event and their aim is to make Haywards Heath a Dementia Friendly town. They want people with dementia to feel part of the wider community and to help care for the carers. On Saturday 21st May (10am1pm) there will be an information stand in Market Place, Burgess Hill. This is in conjunction with the Stroke Association, with the aim of making Burgess Hill a Dementia Friendly town. There will be experts on hand to provide advice and answer questions. Individuals who wish to become more involved will have the opportunity to become a Dementia Friend. Anne enthused, “Let’s make society a place where people can live in the best way possible. We need more dementia friendly towns and villages. Information is essential and the Alzheimer’s Society has plenty to pass on.” Following Dementia Awareness Week, a conference will take place at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath on June 1st. This event is titled “Celebrating progress in research and creativity on dementia in Sussex” and is open to the general public. Topics covered include ‘The ethical
On Friday 20th May (10am4pm), a 1963 Routemaster Bus will be in Church Walk, Burgess Hill. It’s hoped the public will hop aboard, chat about the old times on the old buses and learn more about dementia from the information on display. Anne pointed out, “Dementia affects people in different ways, with various degrees of severity and confusion. When people are diagnosed they often don’t know where to go, what to ask and who to ask.”

dimension of care’, ‘The patient and the carers voice’, ‘Arts and creativity in dementia care’ and ‘Nursing updates’ to name just a few. In the long run, Anne hopes to see the number of dementia café’s increased. “In Hassocks there’s a dementia café open once a month from 6pm,” she tells me. In Haywards Heath there is a coffee stop open (10am-12pm) every Tuesday at Centenary Hall on St. Wilfrids Way, and at the Redwood Activity Centre on Perrymount Road there is The Elderberry Club - for carers, which is held on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month (10.30am-4.30pm). Anne said, “A dementia café should soon be open at St. Edwards Church in Burgess Hill and it would be nice to have one in Hurstpierpoint too. Dementia cafés are opportunities to socialise and for people to support each other.” Carers need supporting too and ‘Neil’s Club’ is open at St. Richards
Church in Haywards Heath every Wednesday (10am-4pm). The club allows people with early onset dementia to socialise together, while carers get some much needed time to themselves. Anne told me “we need to help carers have a break too, so they can recharge their batteries. The needs of carers are paramount and they must be assessed, and
then met. It makes caring easier to know there is support.” Anne went on to highlight something we can all do to make a difference. “Colour perception is altered to people living with dementia and can’t be seen in the same way the rest of us do. White toilet seats and white doors cause a great deal of confusion so next time we redecorate, the colour of objects can be changed to dementia friendly colours in the workplace, society and in the home.” We can all become a ‘Dementia Friends Champion’ and make a positive difference to people with dementia, according to Anne. The Alzheimer’s Society website details how to join the 10,500 volunteers already signed up to the scheme. Staff at Mid Sussex District Council and Burgess Hill Town Council are trained to be dementia friendly. “It’s a helping hand,” Anne said. “A request for a little understanding, a little help. Every one of us can be a dementia friend.” Visit www.alzheimers.org.uk for further information

Dragons
We’ve all seen those tiny flashes of bold colour darting at breakneck speed across a dewpond or slow flowing river, but how much do we really know about the dragonflies and damselflies of our home county? Ruth Lawrence finds out S u ss e x L i v i n g May 2016

I met Ben Rainbow, Chairman of the Sussex Dragonfly Group, to shed some light on the habits of these ethereal creatures, which have been flying the skies in one form or another for the last 300 million years. Sussex is one of the UK’s best dragonfly strongholds; proximity to continental Europe and its sunny, southerly location make it appealing to the 29 resident species and further migrant species that fly over on winds from the European mainland. Dragonfl ies differ from damselfl ies in that they rest with their wings open whereas damselfl ies generally rest with wings folded over Common Darter
their body. Damselfl ies are weaker fl iers and tend to stay close to water while dragonfl ies are larger and more robust, meaning that they can stray further from a water source into drier habitats. One of the most surprising facts I learned was that dragons and damsels spend 95% of their lives as larvae or ‘nymphs’ and only a few short weeks as the shimmering aerial beauties that delight us during the summer months. Once the eggs hatch into larvae they remain under water, actively hunting by ambush, preying upon water lice, midge larvae and worms. The larvae can remain in this form for years, the length of time dependent on species and local conditions, but their emergence can be uncannily synchronised. The most spectacular example of group emergence is the Club Tailed dragonfly, which lives on the River Rother and River Arun and emerges over a two day period from between 1.30 and 3.30 in the afternoon in early May. Once emerged, these medium sized hawker dragonfl ies are black with green or yellow contrasting markings, the males becoming duller with age. They live for about six weeks, during which time, like all dragons and damsels, they must establish and defend territories (males), fi nd a mate, breed and lay eggs (females). When the insect emerges from its larval form, it leaves behind an ‘exuvia’, the dried husk of its former body – a perfect replica of its previous existence – which can be found adhering to reeds or vegetation. The emergent dragon or damsel has a vulnerable few hours while it pumps up its body and tail, followed by its wings, enabling it to take to the skies and become the ultimate flyer. Although

Sussex is one of the UK’s best dragonfly strongholds a dragonfly’s four wings operate in unison, the two pairs are not coupled together so they can move independently during faster fl ight and hovering. One of the fastest dragonfl ies is also the largest; the Emperor is spread widely throughout Sussex and patrols stretches of water at speeds of up to 30kph. It fl ies from late May to early September and can be found on still waters like ponds, lakes, gravel pits and canals. The males’ vivid green thorax contrasts with his bright blue abdomen and rivals can be seen in impressive dog-fights above the water, occasionally tearing pieces from each others wings in the heat of battle. It preys on any smaller flying insect including other dragonfl ies, seizing them with its powerful legs and strong jaws before carrying them away on broad wings with a span of over 10cm. Ben told me that he saw one snatch a marbled white butterfly at Buchan Country Park, near Crawley. One of the easiest dragonfl ies to watch and photograph is the Broad Bodied Chaser; common on still water in Sussex, it obligingly returns to the same perch while looking for prey, giving you time to focus your camera as it lingers. As an early coloniser of new ponds, it takes readily to freshly dug garden ponds and is easy to identify from the broad blue (male) or golden brown (female)

abdomen and the dark patches at the base of each wing. The Southern Hawker, a widespread species in Sussex has the engaging characteristic of being curious and observing you at eye level. I recall being observed by one at a small pond in late summer; it returned repeatedly to hover just in front of my face before darting away and presumably only ceased when its curiosity was satisfied. This species is also at home in urban environments and continued on page 70

benefits from the creation of garden ponds although it can be found away from water, which may account for its wide range. Ben told me that a dragonfly’s eyes are exceptionally sensitive to movement, which means that if you approach them very slowly, you will be able to get extremely close, ideal if you want detailed photographs of them at rest. Photographing a dragonfly in fl ight is another matter; a fast shutter speed and an ability to follow a small, fast moving target that is liable to keep changing direction certainly helps! One of the best places to spot and photograph dragons and damsels in Mid Sussex is at the Woods Mill Nature Reserve (Sussex Wildlife Trust HQ) and there are plenty of excellent sites further across the county, including Seven Sisters Country Park, Old Lodge in the heart of the Ashdown Forest and Wakehurst Place, north of Ardingly. Burton Pond, east of the A285 Duncton to Petworth road lists fi fteen likely to see species including the longest dragonfly, the Golden Ringed Dragonfly which measures 84mm in length. The fact that with imagination, this species, with its black and yellow banding, could resemble a giant wasp, could have given rise to a dragonfly folk name, the ‘horse stinger’. In fact this has absolutely no grounding in truth as neither dragons nor damsels can sting. One nationally rare dragonfly, the Brilliant Emerald is found only in Sussex and the Scottish

Highlands; here it mainly resides on the northern woodland ridges of the High Weald. As its name suggests it is iridescent green and fl ies with speed and purpose, close to trees and in the shade. This species will be helped by the maintenance of large ponds and lakes in the northern, heathland belt of the county as its larvae live among dead twigs and leaves. Anglers have to be particularly vigilant of removing too much bankside cover from large ponds as this is essential habitat for the Brilliant Emerald, along with sheltered bays and overhanging trees. Several species of damselfl ies are common in Sussex. The aptly named Beautiful Demoiselle is the only one to have wholly coloured wings; the male has dark black-brown wings and a metallic bluegreen body. The small fields and tree-lined streams of the Low Weald are its stronghold and it enjoys dancing in open sunny glades, its butterfly-like fl ight making it easy to identify. Because of its high sensitivity to pollution it has a patchy distribution away from the Low Weald and where intensive farming has been developed, it has been lost. One of the easiest damselfl ies to spot in Sussex is the Common Blue; it has large blue eyespots joined by a bar and its habitat is large open water, rivers and fast flowing streams. Although common, its preference for larger open water habitats makes it vulnerable to neglect if vegetation growth goes unchecked. New water bodies such as those created in old gravel pits provide opportunity for valuable new habitat. With so many differing and specific habitats required for each species, it can be hard to know where to spot particular dragonfl ies and damselfl ies and this is where the Sussex Dragonfly Group can help. Part of the British Dragonfly Society, the group promotes dragonfly conservation and education while members (there are no membership fees) can attend field trips, walks and social events. Members can participate in vital work, assisting with the recording of dragonfl ies via the ‘iRecord’ biological recording site for the Sussex Biodiversity Centre; photos can be sent in to gain identification, which helps create detailed species status maps for the county. The group have produced a marvellous book, ‘The Dragonfl ies of Sussex’ which details large clear photos of each species with habitat maps, the best spotting locations and highly detailed information about each specie’s needs, habitats and distribution. Written by five experts, the book also explains what we can do, collectively and as individuals to conserve these unique and perfectly adapted insects. The most important step we can take to help attract dragonfl ies is to build a pond, the larger the better, with suitable vegetation and not containing fish. Encouraging bog-loving plants in wet areas of the garden is also helpful. continued on page 72

The importance of garden ponds cannot be over emphasised; the countryside has seen a massive loss of ponds due to changing farming practices and the piping of water, which has meant that urban and rural gardens are becoming increasingly important habitats for wildlife. The South Downs are essentially waterless and the few remaining dewponds are vital havens for dragonfl ies. I have spent hours by a dewpond surrounded by rich vegetation between Ditchling Beacon and the Clayton Windmills watching dragonfl ies fight, feed, mate and rest; they are the most spectacular fl iers and are equally entrancing at rest. Children are captivated by dragonfl ies, and the summer holidays are the perfect opportunity to Downy Emerald Exuvia

enjoy dragonfly spotting trips as all species are on the wing for their brief season of life. They are an ideal insect to observe; large enough to see clearly, exciting to watch and not as quick to disappear as birds. Locate the right habitat, using the SDG website or their book and the whole family can be engaged watching aerial acrobatics and viewing at close quarters when they descend to perch on a stalk or reed. Lots of birdwatchers are interested in dragonfl ies as they emerge when birds are becoming less visible in the summer and they are a challenging but superb subject for photographers. If you are lucky enough to catch it, the emergence of dragons and damsels from their larval stage is a magical sight. You see a beautiful insect literally appear before your eyes from the tightly fitting suit of its previous life; watch it inflate its own body and wings then fly away into its new existence. There can hardly be a better metaphor for growing up, transforming and fi nding one’s own life. Dragonfl ies are an excellent indicator of a habitat’s health. As they are vulnerable to chemical pollution and dwindling food sources, they show us when we need to step in and campaign for cleaner rivers and habitat creation across our county. Once we see them in a healthy habitat, we can learn to maintain and create further suitable homes and breeding places for these magnificent insects. Joining the SDG is a great way to tap into the collective knowledge freely available and work together to help monitor and encourage dragonfl ies and damselfl ies to thrive in Sussex. Mapping Burgess Hill Mapping the history of Burgess Hill, Robert Veitch delves back through the maps in the West Sussex Record Office to bring them to light today Tithe maps came into being in 1836. Previously a tithe or tenth had been paid to the Church as a tax, in the form of goods and produce. Tithes were often kept in a tithe barn. With the dissolution of the monasteries some tithes were paid to landowners rather than the Church and after 1836 payments were in cash rather than produce. When this map was produced in 1845, St. John’s Common had not long become more commonly known as Burgess Hill. It was a rural and quiet place until the railway arrived in 1841. Tithe maps numbered every parcel of land and this was linked to a schedule indicating who owned or occupied land within a Parish. It took 15 years to map the country. On this map much of the land was in the hands of Edward Harmer, the London and Brighton Railway Company, William Normann, John Marton-Cripps 1845 Tithe map showing rural and Reverend Powell. Burgess Hill Reverend Powell occupied land where St. John the Evangelist Church would eventually be built, then consecrated in 1863. The original railway building of 1841 still exists, and can be found on platform 1. By the time this map was produced in 1879, the current railway building had been standing for four years. Tithe maps had been replaced by the Ordnance Survey six inch series of maps at 1:10,560 scale. This map series began in 1842 and would remain in place until 1952. The nation was mapped this way between 184293 and then again from 1891-1914. After that it was updated through to the 1940s where communities changed and revision was required. By now the effect of the railway was clear 1879 Ordnance and the population had Survey map expanded to around 4,500

people, many of whom 1912 Ordnance Survey 1:10,560 map were involved in brick making, tile making and pottery. The growth of the town is clear to see by 1912. Pottery works existed to the east of London Road, while to the west were the wonderful Victoria Pleasure Gardens, complete with a large lake and a pioneering rollercoaster. The Pleasure Gardens remained until the outbreak of World War II, the lake was drained years later and today the Victoria Business Park occupies the site. By 1974 the 1:10,560 scale had been superseded by the metric 1:10,000 series and the population had expanded to around 20,000 people. Yet modern thoroughfares like Queen Elizabeth Avenue did not exist. Readers of a certain age will recall driving the family down Church Road in a Ford Cortina, while these days it’s a waltz on foot, around the trees and street furniture. Times change, society moves on and history evolves. These maps may show bygone days, but as Burgess Hill moves forward, we can still be illuminated by yesteryear 1974 Ordnance and learn lessons from Survey 1:10,000 map the past.

BY ANNE TOMLISON AND JANE ASTON
Ramble & Roam For blind and partially sighted people in Mid Sussex, the 4SIGHT Ramblers is a welcoming group for socialising, getting out and about and enjoying the countryside. This year they celebrate their 5th Birthday The 4SIGHT Ramblers are an active group of blind and partially sighted people and volunteers who enjoy walks of 4 or 5 miles once a month in the beautiful Sussex countryside. There are now 34 members and eight guide dogs. Walks are noisy affairs with members chatting and catching up on the news and dogs frolicking, romping and enjoying their freedom. It all started in May 2011 when joint leaders Anne Tomlinson and Jane Aston got together after recognising that visually impaired people have real trouble getting out in the countryside for fresh air and exercise. They tested the water with a walk from the Jack and Jill Windmills at Clayton followed by lunch at a local pub. There were just 13 people on that fi rst walk and eight of those 13 are still members of the group today.
Rambles are on the fi rst Monday of each month. Everyone with a sight problem has a guide and drivers collect people from home. Our walks are very varied and carry on all year round. In the summer we enjoy village circular walks or we climb hills such as Wolstonbury and the Devil’s Dyke or we go up on the Downs. In the winter we walk along the sea front, in parks or on disused railway tracks – anywhere which is not too muddy! After the walk we go to a pub or restaurant for a good lunch and well earned rest. A couple of years after the Ramblers started, some members said they wanted to do longer and more demanding walks and so, under Anne’s leadership, the Summer Ramblers was born. This splinter group meets from April to September and really tests the stamina of the walkers! Every year the Ramblers have a summer outing. We take a coach and explore further afield. One year we walked along the coast to Birling Gap, once along the Thames towpath to Hampton Court and this year we are going to Virginia Water, part of Windsor Great Park. In June 2016 we will reach our 5th birthday. It is very satisfying to now see such a friendly, active and flourishing group which provides so much pleasure to members and dogs. Wendy, a partially sighted rambler, said, “The thing I enjoy most is that it makes me feel ‘normal’ again. It’s also a social thing, I love it and I loved it from day one.” If you know someone who is blind or partially sighted who would like to join the 4SIGHT Ramblers, please call Anne on 01444 456026 or Jane on 01444 870462 or visit www.4sightsussex.co.uk

Village Shops Lead the Way There are so many beautiful villages to visit in Mid Sussex, and each one is packed with a wonderful array of shops from designer boutiques to beauty, food and interiors. Have you discovered these hidden gems yet? Half an hour ago I was in Brighton. I’m now sitting in a tranquil, historic churchyard, listening to the birds and looking out over endless views of the South Downs. This is just one of many Sussex villages, nestled in the county’s areas of outstanding natural beauty. Villages such as Cuckfield, Lindfield, Forest Row, Hurstpierpoint, Steyning and many more are well worth a visit. Easily accessible by car (or bus) and not far from larger towns, they make great day trips. But be prepared – a day may not be long enough to discover all that’s on offer. Whether you enjoy fi ne dining, relaxing at a luxury spa, delving into local history, hiking along a national trail or strolling around an award winning garden, Sussex villages really do have it all. If you’re looking for clothes, you will delight in a variety of independent boutiques, run by experienced retailers who are passionate about what they do. They know fashion and they know their customers.
If you’re looking for clothes, you will delight in a variety of independent boutiques, run by experienced retailers who are passionate about what they do Spaces are light and airy and there’s time to savour the shopping experience. One owner stays open late when customers request it and women from 30 to 70 who want help tweaking their look, matching up garments and ‘fi nding their
inner goddess’ are in good hands. “Many of the larger stores are bound by set colours or looks. Here, we can sell an eclectic mix,” says one shop owner. Regular customers travel from London, Horsham, Brighton, Lewes and Eastbourne. Each boutique has an individual range and stock is constantly replenished. Some specialise in heavily discounted second hand designer clothes. Others provide a platform for British start-ups. One has a stunning collection of designer shoes. Sussex villages are also home to antiques, flooring and bathroom suppliers and interiors shops selling everything from plants, candles and vases to artisan ceramics, bags, quilts and metalwork. Delicatessens supply Sussex tea, honey, chutneys and cheeses and many villages hold regular markets where you can buy locally produced bread, meat, fish, wine, beer and seasonal fruit and veg, also used by gastro pubs and restaurants in the area. Sitting on the terrace of the village café, frequented by families, professionals and romancing couples, I notice people chatting in the street. The owner tells me he knows all the local tradesmen, the postmaster and other business owners. He beams with pride as he points out traditional tea rooms and “genuinely old buildings”. Sussex villages are steeped in history. Winding streets, timber framed cottages, nooks and crannies, and businesses established over generations and everyone I met was full of fascinating facts about where they live and work. It’s time to head home and I’ve barely scratched the surface of this Sussex village. SUSSEX LIVING May 2016
