Tragic plane crash at Bilsham Corner

Very few, if any, communities in the South of England were untouched by the air war during WW2. Yapton, having the RAF base of Ford airfield on its doorstep, was, perhaps, at greater risk than many villages. Several bombs were dropped and exploded in the village, possibly intended for the airfield, and several aircraft

George Matthews RCAF, aged 21 of British Columbia, Canada were killed. They are both buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery. Two civilians were also killed in the tragedy, 82 year old Mr George Rogers of ‘The Elms’ who appears to have been working in his garden shed at the time which was destroyed by flying debris, and nine year old Mary Ifould, daughter of Mr & Mrs Percy Ifould, who was playing in her garden at No. 88. Her little body was carried by the rescue services and laid under a tree in the next door garden, No. 87. According to Joan Ifould, future wife of Mary’s brother Jim, this tree remained for many years as a memorial to her by her family and neighbours. She is still remembered today by a few surviving friends from Yapton school where she was a pupil. Both George Rogers and Mary Ifould lay at rest in St. Marys Church Yard in Yapton.

As we approach the 79th anniversary of the most harrowing incident I would like to dedicate this article to the memory of those who died. This occurred at Bilsham Corner at approximately 11.35 am on Sunday 30th January 1944 when a fully laden Mosquito crashed seriously damaging two buildings, No. 88/89 Bilsham Corner and “The Elms” in Grevetts Lane West.

The Mosquito, Type FB. V1., was one of six Mosquito aircraft of 487 (New Zealand) Squadron which had taken off from RAF Hunsdon in Hertfordshire, on a mission to bomb V 1 sites in Northern France. They encountered fog on the south coast and it appears that the mission was aborted and the Mosquito (Serial No. HX916) flown by Fl/Sgt John Hyndman RNZAF, flew into the ground at Bilsham while trying to land at Ford Airfield.

As the stricken aircraft disintegrated the engines, bombs and debris were thrown against the two houses causing one to catch fire. One bomb smashed through the wall of No 88 ending up in a fireplace, fortunately without exploding. Bognor Regis N.F.S. (National Fire Service) attended to scene, assisted by the Aldingbourne Rescue Service.

built during WW2, built mainly of wood and originally designed to be used for reconnaissance purposes. This fast, two engined machine, saw service not only as resonance but as a fighter, bomber, night fighter, mine layer and path finder. It could operate as effectively at altitude as well as at low level. 7,781 were built in its various marks, but at the time of writing there is only one airworthy machine flying although that could change very soon.

Historic Arundel snippets

Part I by local historian Mark Phillips

During my research into the history of the town and people of Arundel, I often come across interesting snippets that I note down and put to one side, planning to follow them up in the near future, but rarely find the time to do so. I am sharing these with you today (My fourth article on historic snippets over the past few years) in the hope you will also find them interesting.

The town market was held in Maltravers Street until the late 1700s when it moved to a new space in the town square following the demolition of some old shops and houses. In the early 1500s, Maltravers Street was known as Old Chipping Street (meaning Market Street, there are various forms of spelling).This changed to Old Market Street from the late 1500s to late 1700s and the first mention of it as Maltravers Street is not found until the 1830s. Towards the end of the 1700s it had the unofficial name of ‘White Waistcoat Street’, due to the majority of residents living there being professional people

Boys from Bognor invaded a dance at St Marys Hall’. Don Ayling, the dance organiser and leader of the Melodaires Dance Band said, ‘A fight started between a sailor, from the nearby Ford Air Station and a stable lad which gave the Teddy Boys the opportunity of making trouble. But several local lads took matters in hand and gave the Teddy boys a good bashing.’ The sailor commented, ‘The stable boy was five foot nothing and without warning, he climbed up my trousers and clipped me under the chin.’ As the Teddy Boys made good their escape, Mr Ayling said that he did not think Arundel would see them again any time soon.

In 1950,

In a local newspaper article from May 1977, Duke Miles was quoted as telling the boys of Collyers School in Horsham that he was not in favour of the House of Lords. He went on to say, ‘I got there because an ancestor of mine was involved in murdering the ‘Princes in the tower’. So if you think that gives me the right to sit there then you are up a gum tree.’ The article concluded by saying the late Duke Bernard must be thrashing in his grave.

The first record of a ship being built in Arundel is from 1401 and refers to a ‘balinger’, a light seagoing vessel. In 1522 a naval ship of 90 tons was built and in 1696 an armed cutter the ‘Eagle’ was built. This was armed with 10 guns and weighed 152 tons. The largest recorded ship built in the town was from 1700 and weighed in at nearly 400 tons, although this was quite exceptional. Ship building in Arundel came to an end in the second half of the 19th century. The first main settlement in Arundel was built as an Anglo Saxon Burh. This was a flat area surrounded by a large bank and ditch along with two defended gateways; the banks were likely to have been topped off with a palisade (a defensive wall built of wooden stakes). This was not in the same location of the present town but on the site of the current castle cricket pitch. The main town came about gradually following the Norman invasion in 1066 and the building of the castle. Part 2 will follow next month.

Impact Initiatives

Supporting people living in Sussex to live healthy & fulfilling lives

Sussex Charity Impact Initiatives was founded over 40 years ago and has, CEO Caroline Ridley tells me, supported the people of Sussex to reach their potential and live healthy and fulfilling lives ever since.

“‘Nothing quite like this has ever happened before’ were the words of the then Chair of the County Council as he addressed a conference at the University of Sussex in September 1977.” Caroline explains, “The reason for this conference was to explore the idea of creating a charitable body that Sussex could truly call its own through the participation and cooperation of different churches, voluntary organisations and the local councils.

“In the collaborative world we work in today it is hard to believe that those bodies coming together at that time was a first. The organisation that was borne out of that conference to ‘fill the gaps’ and ‘help the needy and dispossessed’ (not words we would now use) remains today as Impact Initiatives.”

Now working as an independent charity, Impact Initiatives supports over 8,000 people each year, through a team of over 90 staff who are in turn supported by a team of volunteers. The charity works with people of all ages across Sussex, the services are varied with a common thread of helping people to live healthy and fulfilling lives and reach their potential.

Workability supporting people with disabilities into employment for over 25 years

One of a number of services aimed at Adults and Older People the Workability scheme has, Caroline Ridley explains, an expert team helping people with disabilities and carers to identify their specific skills and ambitions and match these to employment opportunities. “They then help people through the job search, application and interview processes and into employment that is realistic, focussed on their abilities, enjoyable and a positive experience.”

“They told me I would never walk again but Heather at Workability had faith in me, not only that I would walk again but that I could work again” Workability user.

Additionally, Caroline Ridley says, “Impact’s West Sussex Advocacy services have given people a voice since 1994 when the Grayling Well Hospital (now one of Chichester’s newer housing developments) closed, moving its longterm residents into their own homes.

“We worked with 21 adults many of who had lived in the hospital for many years to ensure their voices were heard and they had choice in where they moved on to.” Since that time Impact has ensured that 1,000s of people with disabilities have had a voice in what matters to them including where they live, the support they receive and how they live as parents. The focus is on empowering and enabling people to speak up and live the lives they choose. Information on Advocacy referrals can be found on Impact’s website.

Developing services to increase skills and, reduce loneliness and isolation

Caroline Ridley tells me that over the years, Impact has continually developed services as the needs of local people have changed and this

was particularly apparent over the last few years when services had to be quickly developed through the Covid pandemic. Key being the ability to, “Provide and teach people how to use IT so they could maintain contact with [us], other support and their friends and family. Isolation was a huge issue for many and for more so for many people with disabilities as this was compounded by additional vulnerabilities, issues with getting out and about and less people being able to visit them.”

This allowed Impact’s teams to keep in touch online and ensure vital support was in place and also to help groups set up online peer social groups, so they could support and give each other company. Some of these groups including the Self Advocacy groups for people with Autism, continue online as they became a key part of people’s lives and continue to reduce loneliness and isolation.

Impact’s Aspie Trainers offer training sessions to improve services for people with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASCs); offering a range of training sessions to suit the needs of any team, organisation or individual working with, supporting or working alongside autistic individuals. During

Covid, the Impact team quickly redesigned their training, so this could be delivered online.

Other services include Ageing Well a programme of services and activities for those aged 50+ living in Brighton and Hove, including support and information for people living with dementia, and Food Services working to make sure that nobody in Brighton and Hove has to go without food.

45 years on from that original conference Impact continue to ‘fill the gaps’

Caroline says, “We are now very excited to bring one of our longstanding Brighton based

services to West Sussex. Our Stopover supported housing service for young women currently provides a home and expert support for 45 young women across nine houses, two of these for young women and their babies. The service is unique providing a pathway from 24 hour support to just an hour a week as young women move through our houses and on to living independently. We have a track record of successfully supporting the most vulnerable and troubled young women through giving them a home where they feel safe, often for the first time in their lives and consistent expert support based on understanding the trauma they have experienced.”

“Stopover is the first place I have lived where I feel I am safe and belong. They have taught me it is OK to cry and be angry and helped me managed how I feel. I kicked against all the rules they have at first but now I am the one telling girls who move in that the rules are there to keep us all safe and because they care about us”.

Over the last year Impact has worked with the West Sussex County Council (WSCC) Leaving Care Team and will be opening its first house in West Sussex later this month with four young women

already waiting to move in. “We are looking forward to welcoming them and helping them to make our house into their home and continuing to work towards our aim for Sussex people of all ages to reach their potential whilst living healthy and fulfilling lives.”

After school play for children along with a safe space for young people

In addition to Stopover, other services for Children and Young People include Whitehawk After School Project (WASP), which provides an Ofsted registered after school club and holiday play schemes at City Academy, Whitehawk where the skilled team ensure the club is nurturing, inclusive and fun. And a Young People’s Centre (YPC) in Brighton a safe space where the Impact team works alongside other organisations to provide a one to one and group sessions.

Designing your own Rose Garden

Roses have been in cultivation since 500BC in the Mediterranean, Persia and China though they first appeared on earth about 50 million years ago. In China they symbolise eternal Spring and longevity, in Persia beauty and perfection and in the West they have been associated more with the Goddess Aphrodite and love.

There are over 300 species and today there are tens of thousands of cultivars so when you design your rose garden this Winter you are adding to this great tradition. Today’s species roses mainly originate from 18th Century China.

Type of Roses

A typical Rose garden will consist of Hybrid Teas, bush roses and climbing roses, with some taller ‘lollypop’ standard roses. Hybrids have more of that perfect single stem rose that are favourites of weddings whereas modern shrub roses are floribundas with more open flowers and often repeating during the season.

Ramblers are used more for outbuildings and large walls, or grown up the trunk of feature trees. They normally just flower the once, but ‘Phyllis Bride’ and ‘Malvern hills’ are repeat flowerers.

The Rosa rugosa family are bullet proof and great for hedging, planting as a backdrop or in a shrub border.

Type of rose garden

First you need to decide if you want a formal rose garden, or something more integrated into

the rest of your planting. A formal rose garden is often contained with geometric shaped evergreen hedging and apart from some minimal undercover flowers, the main interest is the roses. Because in Winter a rose garden is quite barren, this is normally a good choice for the larger garden.

Integrated rose design uses roses amidst other planting. In the 70’s a front garden had a rose, then a shrub and then a rose and then a tree. These days a lot of people want a more wild contemporary setting for their roses, mixing them up with ornamental grasses, perennials, wild Geraniums and Dahlias.

Colours

Because roses come in all colours except blue, colour combining is an easy art form with a

broad pallet to choose from. You can opt for clashing colours, or go for more harmonious colour schemes like pastel oranges and yellows, purples, pinks and whites, or pure single colour swathes of red, or white or lilac. Scent

David Austin categorises the smell of roses into 5 scents: Myrrh, Musk, Old Rose, Tea rose (meant to smell like a freshly opened pack of China tea eg Rosa Harlow Carr), and Fruity.

Underplanting

To maximise your garden space and to provide contrasting or harmonious colours, you can underplant roses with Geraniums, Lavender, Salvias, Campanula or even Penstemons and of course Summer bulbs likeAllium and Camassia. Gypsophilia Baby Breath is lovely as is Perovskia.

Conditions

The soil is really important. Roses like well drained, slightly acidic rich soil, and though I have seem them survive on clay, which they like because of the mineral content, they prefer a good loam. If you have the luxury of preparing the bed from scratch, lots of compost dug into

the soil will be welcome, and manure (horse manure from a stable, where Hydrated lime is used to counteract odours, can eventual make the soil slightly alkaline).

They prefer to be sheltered from contact with strong winds and like mulch to keep the moisture in the soil in Summer. They will need at least 5 6 hours of sunlight each day. You can however get roses that will tolerate, grow and flower on a North facing wall such as Rosa Generous Gardener.

Planting Roses

Once again, there are lots of videos online. At lest 60cm spacing is needed as they need a good amount of air circulation to avoid mildew building up on their leaves and in the soil. Buying roses can be done anytime but over winter they can be purchased as ‘bare root’ which means they are dug directly out of the fields. They tend to be stronger and about 30% cheaper.

What to do in December

Check your local Christmas Fairs. Horsham Sunday Christmas market, plus the Ukfield Festival of Christmas, Arundel by Candlelight and ice skating at the Pavillion in Brighton are just a few ideas.

December tasks

• It’s the right time to plant trees and hedges taken straight from the field. As with the roses, they are normally called ‘bare root’ as opposed to ‘container grown’.

• It is still ok to order and plant bulbs. The soil is still very warm even if the air isn’t.

• You can prune heavily sapping trees like Birches now and Grape vines before the winter sets in.

• Harvest the rest of your root crops and lift and store your Dahlia, Canna and Ginger Lilly bulbs.

• Don’t worry if your garden looks messy. The more mess the better for wildlife that needs a place to hide away during the winter.

• Continue to rake up leaves and store them separately from the summer’s grass clippings as they need a different process to break down quickly.

However, we have some lovely times to look back on in the last half term.

Willow Class meets Henry the hedgehog

Willow Class children thoroughly enjoyed a surprise visit from Graham and his hedgehog, Henry, before the half term holiday! Graham taught Willow Class many interesting facts about hedgehogs before showing them Henry; the children were amazed to not only see a hedgehog so close but for it to be awake in the daytime!

‘History Man’ visits Maple and Oak Class

Imagine the excitement in Maple Class when a knight came to visit! Also known as Paul Ullson, the ‘History Man’, Maple Class were given lots of information about 1066

and the Battle of Hastings, the period in History they are learning about. The children listened attentively and asked many great questions. Oak Class were also excited to have the ‘History Man’ visit last month. They’ve been learning about crime and punishment in Britain over the past 800 years, and he came in to show them some methods of punishment used! They had fun examining and sketching the punishments he brought in. They’re glad the punishments are no longer used!

Father Andrew and the marvellous Eucharist Pope Francis called it the “Sacrament of Love”: Father Andrew shared a wonderful Eucharist with the children and based the service on the concept of the Good Shepherd. It was a lovely occasion when children experienced some of the key components of a Eucharist.

Magistrate comes to ACE

A local magistrate came to ACE and told us about the roles of magistrates and what they do. A magistrate’s account from a child in Year 6 Magistrates are volunteers who decide if people are guilty of a crime or not. This takes place in the Magistrates Court. There are two types of courts. The options are Magistrates Court and Crown Court. All crime usually goes straight to the Magistrates Court, and then can be passed on to Crown Court if the person that committed a crime needs a more severe punishment. The court of magistrates is only allowed to hand out punishment for fines, community service and up to 6 months in prison.

We learnt that when we are 10, we are officially mature enough to know what to do, and what not to do. So if you are found doing something bad, and you are 10 or over, then you can be arrested and get a criminal record that can affect your job prospects and opportunities to travel in later life. Once you are 15 years old you can also be sent to a Youth Prison.

Offenders can go straight to Crown Court sometimes if their acts of breaking the law were so bad. Things that have to be handled by the people working in Crown Court are crimes that involve murder, armed robbery or threatening children. Magistrates are really thorough and they listen to everyone in court’s ideas and have to take in and think about everything that is said. They get the final say on whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty.

We had great fun performing a mock trial in class. Our magistrates found the defendant John Smith guilty of the theft of a radio!

Sticking to the rules over Christmas

A different approach to eating over Christmas Christmas happens once a year, and my usual advice is that a couple of days off plan won’t make a huge difference to the results you see in the long term. This said, a lot of us find that this approach makes it hard to get back on plan again afterwards. So, I thought I’d share a trick I use with my clients to come up with a different approach to eating over Christmas. This is not about denial or willpower, it’s about planning and pre deciding how to approach Christmas rather than finding yourself continually inhaling Quality Street’s then feeling guilty afterwards.

We eat for reasons other than nutritio and it’s reasonable to want a few glasses of wine and off track foods over Christmas but how much is acceptable to you? Decide while you’re in control, rather than in the heat of the moment. Maybe you would feel like you found the right balance if you had two glasses

of wine at each social event, and none when you’re at home. Maybe you have a weakness for mince pies and want to have a one a day over Christmas. The key thing is to remember this “rule” you’ve made for yourself and stick to it.

A ready made plan for better decision making Clearly this approach isn’t a long term solution to getting, or staying, in shape but it gives you a good place to work from without either depriving yourself or completely going off the rails.

I think if we can play by a set of rules all the time, it makes it easier to tighten the rules back up again afterwards. It is also much easier to follow through on a plan you’ve already made, than it is to put the brakes on in the heat of the moment. Your logical self can make better decisions than your ‘heat of the moment’ self. Brandied Raspberry Meringues

•

• 1heaped tsp cornflour

• 1tbsp vinegar

• 200g caster sugar

• 150ml double or whipping cream

• 1 2tbsp brandy

• 100g raspberries (or other fruit of your choice)

• 2 3 brandy snaps, broken up Method

1 Have ready at least two baking trays covered with non-stick baking parchment or tray liners. Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/gas Mark3.

2 Whisk the whites until stiff, then gently whisk in the cornflour and the vinegar. When stiff again whisk in half the sugar until the mixture is stiff and glossy. Now carefully fold in two thirds of the rest of the sugar slowly and gently to keep the volume and stiff texture.

3 Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag with wide star nozzle. Pipe about 12 nests keeping the sides as high as possible.

4 Place in preheated oven but reduce the heat immediately to 160C/300F/ gas Mark 2. Bake for at least one hour, reduce the heat if they are browning too much.

5 Leave them in the cooling oven if you like them slightly crisper. Leave to cool.

6 Whip the cream until softly peaky, then gradually beat in the brandy with remaining sugar to taste. Spoon a little into the base of each nest. Fill with raspberries and finish with pieces of brandy snap.

Dear Sussex Local. I much enjoyed your article on Sussex Cattle. My Great Great Grandfather was also an enthusiast of this breed and had a prize winning herd at Hugget's Furnace Farm, Mayfield. Unfortunately, unlike the Leconfield herd, his was sold in 1902. There is one thing on which Kier Hartley must have misheard or been let down by his word processer. Oxen were not shod with clay shoes. I don't think they would last very long. Oxen were shod with iron shoes called 'cues'. These were like half a horseshoe but smaller, two for each foot because of the cloven hoof. Also called Queues because two together resembled this shape. Oxen were not easy to shoe and had to be thrown and restrained. P.S. Hugget's Furnace was an iron works which gave rise to the couplet, 'Old Master Hugget and his man John. The South Downs National Park has received a flat cash settlement from the Government of £10.486m in every year since 2019/2020 and this amount will remain the same until 24/25 the same cash funding over a period of six years at a time of rapidly rising costs for all services. Inflation continues to erode this sum, meaning we continue to have to make cuts in delivery as well as seeking alternative funding.

Andrew Griffith, MP for Arundel & South Downs, has been reappointed City Minister and Economic Secretary to the Treasury in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Government reshuffle. The MP will be responsible for a wide ranging brief including regulation in the finance sector, access to cash and introducing legislation to make the UK a more competitive place to invest.

West Sussex County Council reports that for the year to April 2022 its renewable energy systems generated more than 16,000 MWh of clean electricity for the grid, which is enough to power more than 5,500 average UK homes. This prevented 3,700 tonnes of CO2te being released

into the atmosphere compared to generating the same amount of electricity from fossil fuels. By selling much of the electricity to the grid and making use of its batteries at Westhampnett solar farm, the County Council earned more than £2.5 million after running costs. This is helping to offset, but not completely cover, the increase in the authority’s own energy bill.

People with Down syndrome who are 30 years old or above, and have a GP based in West Sussex, are being invited to come forward for a healthy brain assessment. During the assessment they will be asked to carry out some fun activities, like puzzles and tasks, when their memory is at its best to help identify if there are any changes as they get older. For older aged adults with a learning disability the team is offering a dementia assessment. Throw a Christmas lifeline to struggling families

Local charity, Home Start Arun, Worthing & Adur is launching their first ever Christmas appeal, asking the community to ‘Throw a Lifeline’ to give hope to the increasing number of local families struggling this Christmas. Bridget, Home Start CEO says “The cost of living crisis is putting a real strain on so many more local families.”

“Parenting is often hard, but it can become incredibly difficult if experiencing poor mental or physical health, living in unsuitable accommodation, lone parenting, poverty, domestic abuse, bereavement, or loneliness.”

Home Start helps local families through their most challenging times. Donations to their appeal will enable their volunteers to give practical and emotional support to a family in their home over the festive period.

Lyminster bypass construction starts

• Information on the cost of living emergency from ADC will come out shortly.

• There has been no date set for the BEW Advisory Committee as there is currently a stalemate with developers.

• Reports of quad bike stolen in Hook Lane; residents are reminded to be vigilant.

Auditors report, Quarterly accounts and finance resource

Edited extracts from draft minutes of Finance Committee meeting 20th July 2022. Review Interim Internal Auditors report May 2022 report discussed and noted. Recommendations to be carried out in a timely fashion. Council discussed processes to be reviewed and put into place, like maintaining Asset Register when item Invoices are approved, items above the value of £500 should be immediately added going forward. Update wedding income process and further training given. Auditors report received in Sept and should be bought to review at next Finance Committee meeting, review Farmers Market fees for May meeting annually.

Quarterly accounts Town Hall Event Staff salaries hadn’t risen to same extent as income. Bookkeeper to check this figure. £10k agreed from Jackie Follis for new events, to check if additional income is coming. Require written confirmation from ADC. Reserves for Flood Defence ATC always contributed £16k per year until last two years, this currently totals £32k. Would it be prudent to put in another £16k from Earmarked Reserves? Advised to wait until year end when we know more about

costs for Atherley and Holmes Chambers roofs. Council could agree that if General Reserves are high at the year end we could put money into Flood Defence projects. Advised we should only do this now if money is required now.

Review of finance resource Discussed current system for handling income and expenditure and making it more efficient. Bookkeeper believes we are under resourced. Pre covid Natalie from Mulberry and Co would post to Sage fortnightly. Now, Roisin is proactive and the role has grown with projects such as Farmers Market. To review process of Town Council finances. Do we need to add resource or alternative resources for workloads? To review how council activity is working. Is finance system currently fit for purpose? Mayor explained current process of how we deal with transactions through the Council. Discussed finance training for staff, including Town Clerk. Reports and parking arrangements for The Square

Edited extracts from the draft minutes of the Parish Council meeting on 18th October. County Councillor, District Councillor and PCSO reports In response to enquiry, potential Controlled Parking Zone scheme for areas of Barnham mentioned. Explained process was detailed and needed to be led by local residents group, though Council would need to support any Scheme going forward. The group would need to identify 5 roads or more in the area the Scheme would potentially cover and canvas residents in those roads to gain support. They’d require 60% of those residents’ support. Information needed to be passed back to residents who initially raised the matter with a message the Council would consider assisting them through details of in next Newsletter if they gained enough public support to submit a request to WSCC.

Council informed of new process for making Traffic Regulation Orders they could utilise for areas like Elm Grove and Church Lane to alleviate parking problems around schools. Agreed Penny Wycherley, Andrew Crawford and Trevor Bence would look to discuss matter further to potentially put in request.

New Parking

arrangements for The Square Following introduction of new parking arrangements by the company who own shops and land in The Square, the Clerk, Chair and other Councillors received representations from residents who received parking tickets. Clerk took up matter with company’s representative in charge of managing the parking company and following various discussions these points and actions were noted: Signage clearer additional signage to be erected informing people new restrictions apply at road entrance, with a tariff sign to be placed as you enter car park and new sign be placed in front of disabled bays until pay and display machine can be installed. Tariffs 15 minute period to allow drop off/pick up. Weekend tariff be updated to allow £1 hourly rate.

Disabled Parking free until new pay and display machine be put in place as car park was too far to expect disabled people to walk there for a ticket. Double Yellow Lines period rules of 15 minutes apply but if kerb is mounted ticket will be issued. barnhamandeastergate pc.gov.uk

Tree survey, playing field, resurfacing play area & noticeboard

Extracts from the minutes of the General Purposes (4th October) and Finance and Legal (11th October) committee meetings. The results of the Parish Tree survey were presented. Quotes will be sought for the necessary actions resulting. The Tree Council’s Branching Out fund was discussed a youth group needs to be involved so enquiries will be made.

Weeding of Walberton pavements and verges was discussed. Measures to discourage parking on the verge by the Fontwell West roundabout, such as planters, will be investigated. Parking restriction markings in the vicinity of the Fontwell petrol station will also be studied. A new litter bin for Blacksmith’s Corner will be requested from Arun DC; further issues with litter from the Fontwell service area were noted. Groundworks companies will be approached to provide designs and quotes for the new S106 funded path around the Playing Field.

Options to increase security of the Playing Field following the recent incursion were discussed.

The Council will have to pay for the dumped tree remains to be removed. Installation of a Rebound Goal was agreed for the Playing Field. The existing goal store is currently unused and will be removed in time for Bonfire Night. The pond outflow wall repair has been approved; landscaping and dredging are intended for 2023. Quotes to resurface the play area following receipt of S106 funds are being sought; the cradle swings will also be replaced. Works on the Avisford Grange tennis courts are scheduled to start in January.

The Fontwell noticeboard will be repaired shortly; a replacement bus shelter has been added to the items to be funded by CIL income. The Planning Application for demolition and reconstruction of the Fontwell Bottle Store was noted.

Employment of temporary help to aid in delivery of the current Council projects was discussed and will be pursued. www.walberton pc.gov.uk
