Chorizo Scotch Eggs
A picnic favourite with a contemporary twist
Ingredients - Serves 4
• 200g cooking chorizo
• 200g sausage meat
• Small bunch of finely chopped parsley
• 6 eggs
• 100g plain flour
• 150g breadcrumbs
Method
1. Soft boil 4 eggs, then cool immediately in very cold water.
2. Take the skin off the chorizo and then blitz in a food processor until you have a sausage meat texture.
3. In a bowl, mix the chorizo, sausage meat, and parsley – season with pepper
4. Weigh out the mixture into 100g balls.
5. Peel the soft-boiled eggs and wrap your meat around them gently, taking care not to break the egg (using wet hands helps the meat not to stick to them). Rest for 1 hour.
6. Prepare three bowls; one with flour, one bread-

In Your Garden
Monthly gardening ideas & tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens
Borde Hill - The World in One Garden
Borde Hill Gardens is a mecca for those interested in beautiful views, rare plants and Champion trees. Colonel Stephenson Clarke, who created the garden from the late 19th Century onwards, sponsored plant hunting trips throughout the world. The result is a fantastic collection of rare trees, including 65 Champion trees (these are the largest of their particular species in the whole of Britain).
Set in 383 acres of Grade 2 Heritage listed landscape, the gardens consist of a loosely connected arrangement of ‘rooms’- the Azalea Ring, Italian Gardens, the Rose Garden and perennial borders whilst being more wild on the edges giving way to lakes and open ground.
Harry Baldwin, the fresh faced and energetic Head Gardener, is passionate about how history and horticulture interweave in this space he looks after. We walk along a row of great Chestnuts which used to be on either side of the drive leading to the mansion, still occupied by the 5th generation of the founding family members. “This here is a Japanese Oak, one of only a handful that survived the original seed germination when they were brought back from Japan. I found one of these hiding in a hedge in Kew when I worked there which everyone had forgotten about. They were the last seeds plant collector Richard Oldham sent back from Asia before he died of Dysentry.” “And this is a Meliosma beaniana, one of only three in the British Isles that was bought at auction in 1932 and
transported by lorry and then horse and cart here from North London.” Harry shows me a black and white photo of its parent tree in China, a photo that is part of an extensive well-preserved archive. “It looks like its parent don’t you think? We measure it regularly and the trunk expands about 1cm every year!” I have the feeling I am walking around an art gallery and museum, not just a garden. We come to a huge magnificent 30m tree just coming into leaf. “This is a Chinese Tulip tree, a Liriodendron. For years we tried to propagate

it and then we noticed a sapling growing up. It did it itself.
This one will be one of the 130 grafted or propagated trees we are planning to plant in the gardens to celebrate 130 years of horticulture here” He points to a Camelia as we wind our way back to the Italian garden. “This is the double pink flowering Camellia ‘Donation’. It was raised here in the 1930’s and now is sold all over the world!”
Our walk passes boggy ground, great hollows made from sand mining, ancient woodland and views of lakes. “We will be making an educational space down near the lake, with an eco-lodge and cafe. I would like to leave behind a legacy of protecting this collection, and we are digitising the whole of the archive”. We pass a stand of Redwoods, the 3 Magnolia Sisters, and every so often
bones of the landscape. We finish at the Rose Garden. Created in the 1990’s after the owner, Mrs Clarke, read, to her surprise, an old 1902 copy of Countylife magazine praising the beauty of Borde Hill Rose Gardens. She decided to recreate this, and this quadrant of garden now consists of

Big ideas for small bathrooms
Small can be stylish & functional says Nick Roberts RMR Group
Debunking bathroom renovation misconceptions
With bathroom renovations, size doesn't matter. Like a chef whipping up a culinary masterpiece in a tiny kitchen, expert renovators can turn the smallest bathrooms into a luxurious oasis. Whether your bathroom is a cosy nook or a spacious retreat, there's always room for improvement.
Hiring an experienced construction or bathroom company is crucial to achieving the best design and installation for your bathroom. Professionals know how to work with available space, debunking the misconception that a small bathroom is a lost cause. In fact, small bathrooms can be transformed into efficient and stylish spaces that make you forget all about their dimensions. Another common misconception about bathroom renovations is they're always expensive. While some projects can be costly, working with
a knowledgeable company can help you find the balance between budget and dream bathroom. From repurposing existing fixtures to choosing affordable materials, there are several ways to create a stunning bathroom without breaking the bank.
Popular bathroom design choices
A popular design in bathroom renovations is the floating vanity units. These sleek, wall-mounted fixtures save valuable floor space and provide a modern, minimalist look. Additionally, glass shower enclosures create an illusion of space, making even the tiniest bathroom feel larger. Don't let size limitations or misconceptions about bathroom renovations hold you back from creating the ideal bathroom. With the right expertise and design choices, small spaces can transform into stylish, functional retreats. It's not the size that matters - it's what you do with it. Whether you're after a simple refresh or a complete overhaul, trust the experts. robertsmillerredshaw.com

5 ways to bring spring into your home
Giving the best impression to potential buyers
1. Add a burst of fresh colour with a selection of new accessories. Pops of colour can bring a whole new energy to a space, whether it’s a set of colourful kitchen accessories or new cushions in the sitting room. Pick a colour that makes you feel good and enjoy the same good energy in your home.
2. Brighter days draw attention to tired paintwork. Refresh your woodwork in your home to make the room feel instantly updated and ‘clean.’ It might seem an unnecessary job, but even refreshing the ceiling can dramatically enhance the light levels in a space.
3. Tackle that one big ‘problem area’ with a declutter for a great way to feel like you’re winning at life! Invest in storage baskets or shelving that
will enable you to organise a disorganised area that bugs you to instantly feel a weight off your shoulders.
4. Swapping out your bedding for a new set is one of the very best ways to embrace spring in the bedroom. There’s nothing better than beautiful soft new sheets to aid a better night’s sleep. Try a light linen set for a relaxed, bohemian vibe, with no ironing required!
5. Mirrors are one of the most used pieces in an interior designer’s toolbox to bounce light around and create the illusion of space. Go big and position a floor-standing mirror to instantly reflect the new season outside. Marble
& Granite Beauty of Natural Stone for Kitchens & Bathrooms
For centuries both marble and granite have been used by artists, architects and constructors both for their aesthetic and durability qualities. Today marble, granite quartz and other stone are highly prized materials for use in bathrooms and kitchens.
LBS Stone is a family run business which has evolved over the past 20 years and Marcus Jones spoke to Sussex Local about the Storrington based business. Marcus explained the importance which is placed on quality and achieving the right look for the client's project. “The finest materials are sourced from reputable suppliers to guarantee that the finished product will not only be visually stunning but will be hygienic, scratch and heat resistant and long lasting. The team of skilled craftsmen are all passionate
about their work and the greatest care is taken throughout the measuring, cutting, shaping and polishing processes to achieve an outcome to fully satisfy the client.” Keeping the customer fully informed during the process is of immense importance Marcus told us, and intense attention to detail ensures that the finished project will meet their aspirations.
Of course, said Marcus, their success has not happened overnight and it has taken years of investing in state of the art technology, building a team of dedicated craftsmen and finding the high quality materials needed to establish a company which has worked with high profile clients as well as offering affordable products to the general public.

KT Tunstall
A grammy-nominated Scottish artist is coming to Worthing!
KT Tunstall burst onto the music scene with her 2004 multiplatinum debut, Eye to the Telescope, which spawned the global hits "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See." These songs established Tunstall as a captivating, must-see performer, as well as a Songwriter with a singular knack for balancing introspective folk and propulsive rock. In the last few years, the Grammy-nominated Scottish Musician has expanded on these musical selves by focusing on a trilogy of records, where each album zeroes in on a single concept: soul, body and mind.
Produced by Martin Terefe, who co-wrote her 2005 global hit "Other Side of the World," her
mind record draws on Tunstall's love of percussive West African grooves as a metaphor for the learning patterns of the mind and is an eclectic album that seamlessly weaves together disparate styles.

Reaching families...
Supporting young people with special educational needs
Many founders of charities or not-forprofit organisations decide to start their own organisation as a result of finding themselves unable to find the support they themselves need … Brian O’Hagan, Director of Reaching Families, is no exception.
In 2008, Brian had recently moved back to Worthing, after many years living in London, and had a child, James, who had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy at eight weeks old. Brian says, “When my son was poorly, I noticed that there was very little support for parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) so I began to explore what could be offered to support parents and families and in doing so, enhance the quality of life for children with SEND and their families.” Having spent 25 years working in the voluntary sector Brian decided to use his skills to launch an organisation that could achieve these objectives.
Working with over 3,000 West Sussex families
Brian explains that the aim of Reaching Families is to empower families of children with SEND in order for them to “maximise the support they receive from external agencies, have the knowledge and skills to care for a child or young person with SEND and to improve their resilience and emotional wellbeing through the support of other families in a similar situation.
“We do that through the delivery of a one-stop shop of services that includes an in-depth parent -carer guide, an online library of factsheets and animations, training workshops and courses, benefits advice and a befriending service for parents of children undergoing diagnosis.” The charity also has parent support groups based in Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Littlehampton, Worthing and online via zoom. With another group to be launched in Shoreham later this year.
Every year, Reaching Families supports over 3,000 families with a range of projects and services. Although the charity does receive referrals from health, schools and the local authority, referrals are not necessary for those seeking support from the organisation.
Delivering a range of information and training services
Reaching Families achieves its mission is to “empower, inform and support parents and families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in West Sussex,” through the delivery of a wide range of services. Possibly key amongst which is the charity’s parent-carer guide: “Making Sense of It All” –often referred to by users as the “parent-carer bible.” The guide is designed to enable and inform parents of children with SEND from birth through to adulthood, covering subjects including diagnosis, benefits and money matters, accessing support at school and from health & social care, and transition into adult life. It also contains a useful directory of local and national organisations, and an equally useful, and extensive, jargon-buster. The guide may be ordered free of charge as an eBook or in hardcopy format, subject to postage and packing, from the Guide Page of the charity’s website.
The charity also offers a series of fact sheets on childhood disabilities and rare syndromes, combining clinical information with local information on relevant projects, services and support for a particular condition. All information is localised to the needs of West Sussex families. Reaching families also produces information in the form of animated films – Animation Shorts – on a variety of subjects.
In 2021-22, 2,600 copies of the Making Sense of it All guide were downloaded/delivered to families, whilst over 10,000 factsheets were downloaded from the Reaching Families website.

32 Charity Profile
Befriendingtraineescertificatepresentation
Additionally, there is a range of Training Workshops for the parent-carer, again free of charge, and a “Making Sense of it All – Foundation Course”, introducing key issues parent-carers will face as their child grows and develops, which is available via Zoom or in person. Again, in 2021-22, 949 parents attended one of Reaching Families training workshops.
Offering “Face-2-Face Befriending” and Parent Support Groups
Parent-carers of recently diagnosed children also have an opportunity to benefit from befriending and emotional support, from an experienced and specially trained parent-carer, under the charity’s Face-2-Face Befriending project. Volunteer based, the charity’s befrienders undergo intensive training, are DBS checked and have ongoing support and supervision.
Monthly support groups - Umbrellas Parent Support groups are based in Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Littlehampton and Worthing and since Covid, a weekly online group meets on Zoom. These groups can be crucial for isolated parents, offering the opportunity to connect with other parents and signposting them to other relevant projects and services.
Amongst the information provided in Reaching Families’ Impact report for 2021 22, are figures illustrating the positive effect the charity has upon the lives of those who use its services. 90 percent of parent-carers reported improved knowledge in accessing support for their child, whilst 80 percent of parent-carers reported feeling more resilient in overcoming difficulties thanks to peer support. And 78 percent of parentcarers reported improved skills and selfconfidence in supporting their child as a result of attending a Reaching Families training course.

“Umbrellas” Worthing summer get together
“£10 will pay for the cost of printing our parent guides for one West Sussex family”
Reaching Families is funded from a variety of sources including the National Lottery, the local authority, the NHS and various charitable trusts and foundations. When I ask about Fundraising Events, Brian says that, “We very rarely put on fundraising events mainly because we are a small team and do not have the resources for managing these sorts of events.”
However, if you enjoy running, cycling, skydiving or putting on coffee mornings then Brian O’Hagan would be delighted to hear from you to discuss how you could raise much needed funds to sustain the work of the charity. “We have been very lucky to have had support from local people with fundraising, for example, a family in Littlehampton last Christmas raised money for us through a Christmas light show. Another lady ran a Zumbathon for us, many more have given donations.”
Reaching Families is also keen to hear from anyone who might want to volunteer with the charity. “We use volunteers in our befriending service… Our team of twenty volunteers provide emotional and practical support with things like
signposting, accessing other services, learning about their child’s condition and meeting other parent-carers.” There are other ways in which volunteers can contribute to the charity too – by promoting the work of Reaching Families at community events, representing the charity at groups in your own local area or by distribution information to community venues, such as preschools and GP surgeries.
Exponential growth in demand for services since Covid
Now, more than ever charities are struggling to provide their much-needed services. As Brian says, “Our biggest challenge is meeting an exponential increase in demand for our service. Since the start of the covid pandemic demand has increased in some projects by over 200 percent. Finding the funds to increase resources to meet that demand has been difficult particularly in the current economic climate.”

Smart motorways discontinued
Utilising the hard shoulder for safety on motorways
Road safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), welcomed the decision to scrap developing new smart motorways for safety reasons. RoSPA has campaigned for road safety for over a century and has highlighted the higher risk of collisions between stationary and moving vehicles on smart motorways compared to conventional ones, with road users calling for the return of the hard shoulder. Road Safety Manager at RoSPA, stated drivers want the hard shoulder and motorists need to feel safe on roads. RoSPA welcomes plans to shelve construction of smart motorways and hopes the money will be used to make motorways safer in other ways. Live lane breakdowns can happen where a hard shoulder is in place, and it is only a relative place of safety. Collisions and injury can still occur, which is why RoSPA will continue to educate motorists on what to do in an emergency on the road.
Smart motorway safety feature investments are ongoing like the retrofit of emergency refuge areas. RoSPA tips for encountering problems on the motorway: If a driver is on a motorway with a hard shoulder and needs to do an instant stop, use momentum to move over to the left lane and stop on the hard shoulder, turn on the hazards and ensure side lights are illuminated if it's dark. Be aware of changes in the car's handling, stop as far to the left as possible, get all occupants out of the car, and call for help using the nearest SOS phone. If the driver is on a smart motorway and can still drive, get to a service area or emergency refuge area. If they break down in a live lane, get the vehicle as far off the road as possible, turn on hazard lights, and get out of the vehicle on the left-hand side if it's safe, if not, stay in the car with the seatbelt on and call 999. www.rospa.com

Amberley C of E Primary School
Coronation Celebrations
Oak Class were able to think about all the royal items they saw during their visit to the Tower of London earlier in the school year!
As part of the celebrations, a ‘Design-A-Crown’ competition took place and the children rose to the occasion; they produced crowns to rival St. Edwards’ crown that King Charles III wore at his coronation. Thank you for your fantastic efforts!
At the start of May, the children at Amberley CE Primary School celebrated the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla with a week of learning about the Coronation and having a day of celebrations at the school.
Rev. Gerry shared a special collective worship with the children where they learned all about the anointing of the new King with oil, helping the children to understand the relationship between the monarch and the church.
In class, the children learned about the various special items King Charles would hold during the ceremony including the orb and sceptre.

Local school pupils re enact Coronation of King Charles III
On Tuesday, May 2, pupils from Arundel Church of England Primary School put on a spectacular re enactment of the coronation of King Charles III. The event, which was organized and led by Father Andrew from St Nicholas Church, it was aimed to give pupils a first-hand experience of the historical event and to promote an understanding of British history, especially with the events on 6th May 2023. Pupils donned period costumes and recreated the pageantry and ceremony of the coronation.
Parents and teachers alike were impressed with the pupils' and Father Andrew’s attention to detail and commitment to bringing history to life. "It was amazing to see the pupils so engaged and excited about history," said deputy headteacher Heidi Simpson. "It's wonderful to
see the members of the clergy lead and allow the children to demonstrate such enthusiasm for learning. Although we are lucky here with Father David and Father Andrew" The event was also attended by volunteers, who praised the school for its dedication to promoting education and culture in the community. "It's wonderful to see young people taking an interest in our country's rich history," said Doctor Mott. "Arundel Church of England Primary School should be commended for their efforts in bringing this important event to life."
Overall, the reenactment was a great success, and the pupils left with a newfound appreciation for British history and culture. The school hopes to continue promoting historical education and cultural awareness through future events and initiatives with its local partnerships.

Notice how far you have come
By Heather Smith
We often hold ourselves to very high standards when it comes to our diet andexercise routines.
If we’re not seeing what we want to see – or if we’re not seeing it as quickly as we would like –we often throw in the towel and quit.
We end up with a bit of an ‘all or nothing’ approach as our interest rises and falls depending on where we feel in relation to our goals.
A good strategy to help maintain your consistency is to remember to look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go.
Let’s say your ultimate goal is to be in a regular exercise routine. To you, that means 3 workouts a week. Your starting point was zero. Now, you’re getting 2 workouts most weeks and 3 sometimes. That is not failing – that is great progress!
How about if your goal is to get 10,000 steps a day. Your starting point was 2,000 and now you’re getting about 6,000… Again, that is not failing. You’re consistently able to do more than you could at the start. You are making progress!
Let’s say your nutrition goal is to cook three meals a day from scratch. Your starting point was cooking one meal a day yourself, and now you manage to cook two meals a day several times a week. Of course, there’s more work to do – but throwing the towel in and going back to your old habits is not going to help. You are closer to your goal than you were, so keep on making progress! So, when the going gets tough, remember to take a look back at how far you’ve come. Make sure you really allow yourself to notice the changes. Be proud of yourself, even if you’re not where you’d like to be yet, and make sure to find positives in the achievements you’ve made.

Men’s Health
Is cycling bad for men’s health?
With 2023 marking the 100th Annual Bike Week from the 5th-11th June this year, cycling has seen an increase in popularity over the last few years. Cycling is a fun and effective form of exercise, but some worry that pressure from a bicycle saddle can cause urinary, sexual, prostate problems and can even increase your risk of prostate cancer.
Some data from clinical studies shows that side effects of bicycle riding in men are most often genital numbness. Rarer effects can include infertility, impotence, blood in the urine, twisting of the spermatic cord, prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate, and elevated PSA levels.
But do the pros of an active lifestyle outweigh the risks? Consultant urologist Simon Woodhams (pictured above) explains that, ”If you have a chronic prostate problem that’s provoked by using a conventional seat, you can switch to a recumbent seat. ‘Noseless’ bicycle saddles can reduce numbness, pressure and genital discomfort in male cyclists. A traditional bike saddle puts 25% to 40% of your body's weight on the nerves and
blood vessels down there, but a no-nose saddle shifts that weight toward the sit bones.”
Mr Woodhams concludes that, “Men who get the most exercise have a lower incidence of prostate cancer when compared with men who get little or no exercise. Exercising on most days of the week can help you lower your risk of developing prostate cancer. Bicycle riding is an excellent form of exercise and will not increase your risk of prostate cancer. Other ways to reduce your risk of prostate cancer are staying at a healthy weight and eating a wellbalanced, healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods.” www.westsussexurology.co.uk

The opening of the Arun Cinema in 1939
By local historian Mark Phillips
ways of people in other parts of the world and although we may not agree with them, there is no harm in seeing them at the pictures.”
He raised a laugh with his concluding words: “Thank heaven you are going to see something tonight after listening to me!”
Mr Yapp thanked the Duke and said he had been told by a number of people that Arundel was not large enough to warrant the expenditure entailed in building the cinema and in doing so, his company would ‘Lose their shirts!’
In the 9th January 1939 edition of the West Sussex Gazette, it stated that when Bernard, Duke of Norfolk, formally opened the Arun Cinema in Arundel, he had been the first Duke to ever perform such a ceremony. Whether this is true or not was of little interest to the excited local residents who could hardly believe that a new 465-seat cinema had been built in their small town.
The cinema, and parking for 60 cars, was built on the Queen Street site previously occupied by part of the old Swallow Brewery (now the location of Caen Stone Court). Although smaller than many cinemas in larger towns, it claimed to contain, ‘The most comfortable and fully upholstered seats with plenty of leg room, all well raised for a clear view of the screen. The cinematograph equipment entirely up to date with a sound system that is well suited to the size of the hall.’
There was a full house of dignitaries and local residents on the opening night to watch the formal ceremony from the raised stage. Duke Bernard and Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk were accompanied by Gwendolen Duchess of Norfolk (Duke Bernard’s mother), Mayor Pearson and his wife and Mr Herbert Yapp, chairman of cinema company Messrs Rickenya Ltd.,
The Mayor told the audience that the last time a theatre had been opened in Arundel was 132 years ago, ‘when Arundel was so fashionable that Brighton was considered dull by comparison.’
When the Duke spoke, he said that the town had waited a long time for its own purpose-built cinema and thanked the company for providing such a charming and comfortable place. He declared the cinema open followed by: “The cinema can bring to us in an educational way the habits and
His closing words were defiant: “My colleagues and I are convinced we have made a sound decision and are not the least perturbed about losing our shirts!”
After the opening ceremony, the company adjourned to the Bridge Hotel (Martlets Court now occupies this site) a few doors away, for a reception which was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk.
The first programme included a short Donald Duck film and A Yank at Oxford, a comedy drama featuring Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor. With seats downstairs costing from 6p to one shilling and seats upstairs from one-shilling 3p to one shilling 9p, the cinema proved to be extremely popular, especially during WWII when it was frequented by many of the servicemen based in and around Arundel.
It finally closed its doors in 1959 and part of the building was used as the office and workshop for the Texaco Service Station that replaced it. Many people may not know that films can still be enjoyed at Arundel Town Hall. For info go to: www.arundeltowncouncil.gov.uk/?s=cinema or call 01903 882954

Uplands Yapton’s women’s land army hostel
By Allen Misselbrook, Yapton & Ford local history
Many of my older readers will have heard about the ‘Women’s Land Army’ of WW2 but how many of you realise that it was first formed in January 1917 to help increase the amount of food being grown in Great Britain? It was wound up in 1919 but reformed again just before WW2, in June 1939. Over 200,000 women, nick-named ‘Land Girls’, were recruited over the course of the war, from towns and cities through-out the country to work on the land taking over from the farm workers who had been ‘called-up’ to join the fighting forces.
In June 1940, the West Sussex Gazette carried a Public Notice calling for women to ‘Enrol ToDay’ into the W.L.A. The volunteers would receive one month’s training and would be supplied with ‘breeches, pullover, boots, shoes, mackintosh, dungarees, stockings, hat and overall coat’. They would also be guaranteed a minimum weekly wage.
Many of the women lived in temporary Hostels built to accommodate the new workforce. One such building was located in the centre of Yapton, on the northern bank of the derelict canal, between Victoria House and Canal Road, named ‘Uplands’.
Yapton’s ‘Land Girls’
Yapton, being mainly an agricultural community, had the need for many ‘Land Girls’ who found themselves on farms around the village such as Staker’s Farm, Wicks Farm and Bilsham Farm, working in the fields, driving tractors, lambing and digging ditches as well as helping in the dairies of
Hobbs and Church Farms milking the cows. Others were employed working on poultry farms, in market gardens or anywhere in fact, that would help ease the food shortages caused by the war. Some even became ratcatchers. While working they were all supplied with distinctive green uniforms, either in dungaree style trousers with a bib or overalls.
The 1949 Electoral Roll for Yapton records some of the women who continued working the on the Farms after the war and still living in Uplands. They included Hilda Belcher, Barbara Andrews, Edna Woolgar, Elsie Edwards and Edith Kirby. The Women’s Land Army was eventually disbanded in November 1950.
Post W.L.A.
The building was put to good use following the departure of the Land Girls. It was used as temporary accommodation for families waiting for council houses to become available. Families listed on the 1955 Electoral Roll included Fellows, Keets and Rowe. The building was eventually demolished in the 1960’s, 20 or so years before The Pines estate was built.
Recognition
Finally in 2000, 50 years after their disbandment, the Women’s Land Army were invited to parade past the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day. Their final March took place in October 2012, when 130 veterans took part. In December 2007 Defra, belatedly, announced that all surviving ‘Land Girls’ would be recognised with a badge.
Photographs
A comprehensive collection of photographs was left by the late Iris Langridge. Included among them are many showing the women at work, rest and play around the village and local area, a tribute to their contribution to the war effort and help in feeding the Nation.

Mobile data & crime
I am delighted that since my last column our rural communities received good news for mobile data coverage. The Government has launched its latest strategy to deliver reliable 4G and 5G across the whole country, including here in West Sussex.
I know that some areas, particularly the vicinities of Petworth, Wisborough Green and Arundel, experience ‘blackspots’ in mobile data coverage and this news – which includes a £40 million 5G innovation fund to support businesses in adopting new technologies – will be welcome.
This new strategy was announced by the Government in addition to ongoing improvements, worth £100 million here in Sussex, to upgrade broadband connections to 60,000 households and businesses. Rural connectivity is not only crucial to local economic growth but is also increasingly
vital to the daily life of people who live in the most remote areas.
I know that, for many readers, tackling crime is at the top of the agenda. I share this view. That is why I was pleased with last week’s news that the Government has nationally recruited more than 20,000 new Police Officers – delivering on a commitment made in 2019.
That means that Sussex Police has recruited an additional 679 Police Officers since 2018 and the force now has more officers on our streets than 10 years ago. This positive news has meant that we’ve seen neighbourhood crime fall by 33% since 2019 a bigger reduction than the national average and an expansion of our local Rural Crime Team who are expert specialists in tackling the crime that impacts our more isolated countryside communities.

• EH8 - The development is out of keeping with the character of the area.
• EH10 - Contravenes the Dark Skies Policy.
• GA3 - adequate parking provision not shown.
• H3 - Housing Density - It is perceived to be an overdevelopment of the site.
• Application previously refused on air quality and noise issues, cannot see this has been addressed or resolved. Development is not sustainable as there is no local public transport, and all reports submitted are preliminary and there is no evidence they’ve been finalised so it was difficult to comment specifically on aspects of biodiversity, and cannot see Heritage assessment.

Barnham & Eastergate Parish Council
Public session and Working Party updates
Edited extracts from draft minutes of Parish Council meeting on 14th March 2023.
Open Public Session - Residents of Eastergate Lane representative gave a presentation on the work a small group of residents undertook to get support for making an application to WSCC for a TRO for Eastergate Lane. Application seeks a reduction in speed limit from 40mph to 30mph (or 20mph if possible, though unlikely) and to add some form of traffic calming in terms of pinch points along the Lane. Support received from residents was over 90% and were now seeking support from Parish Council to their application as theirs, together with the County Councillor’s was vital to the TRO application succeeding. Following a discussion, Council agreed to support application and a letter of support be forwarded to representative for inclusion with application. Scheme funding should come from WSCC, but Council also gave preliminary support for some sort of financial support if needed, subject to further discussion when cost details were known.
Resolved: Support Eastergate Lane Residents’ Group application to WSCC to implement a TRO to reduce speed limit and implement traffic calming measures along Eastergate Lane. Any potential financial contribution should application be successful would require further discussion and decision at later meeting. Clerk would send a letter to inform Group’s representative of Council’s support. People, Places and Spaces Working Party – Updated Council on recent discussions held.

Walberton Parish Council
Update for June 2023
Extracts from the minutes of the General Purposes (18th April) and Finance and Legal (25th) Committee meetings.
Environment
The contractor has paused the pond headwall repair due to the water level. To preserve as much water as possible for the summer, enquiries will be made concerning enabling continuation of repairs without drainage.
The first Fontwell pollinator verge has been completed and volunteers are sought to help with the next 9.
A dog waste bin will be installed at the bottom of Dairy Lane and the Avisford Grange agents will be contacted regarding a bin there. A general waste bin will be installed at Blacksmith’s Corner; general tidying of the vegetation there is being undertaken.
Maintenance
An estimate for repainting the Pavilion’s interior was approved.
The Village Green Archway repair quotes were
considered. An update was received regarding the allotment fencing. The repairs to the Fontwell and Barrack Row noticeboards are being chased.
Fontwell Meadows
Community centre is under construction. Estimated that 75% of the public open space could be completed by the end of the summer; paddocks likely later. Areas remain fenced off while seeding takes. The Fontwell West roundabout works are complete; there has been a delay in integration of the traffic lights with National Highways’ electronic management system so they remain switched off.
Financial
The state of the reserves was reviewed. The nature of the Public Sector Deposit Fund account will be reviewed to ensure it continues to provide the most appropriate and safe location for funds.
