218 Local History

Abyngton & Bilesham to Yapton & Bilsham In 1000 years... By Allen Misselbrook, Yapton & Ford local history Over the years, I have heard many suggested derivations of the name Yapton, some plausible and some, perhaps, a little fanciful. I have turned to our library of books and documents, not exhaustive I might add, to see what clues lie within them as to the origin of the name Yapton and a few other historical names that can be found around our village. Very little of my research is from primary sources so at best my findings have to be read with that knowledge in mind. There is a theory in some quarters that the name Yapton, which when reversed reads NOT PAY, stems from the days of Smuggling and refers to receiving contraband without paying the required taxes. This is a little fanciful as the name Yapton appears with today’s spelling in a 14th Century document.

The name Yapton does not appear in William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book of 1086 in any form. A possible reason is that it was included in the entry for Clepinges (Clymping). According to my records, the name appears in several documents of the 13th Century with many different spellings including Abyngton, Abbiton, Yapeton, Ebinton, Jabintton and Yhabitone. Could the reason for all these variations be because the majority of people were illiterate and it was the individual scribe’s interpretation of what was being said? As mentioned above, Yapton with today’s spelling was recorded in a 14th Century document but during the 17th Century, perhaps because of a slip of the quill, our village is referred to as Yeapton and Yopton. For some time, a strong contender for the origin of the name was it was derived from one of St Wilfrid’s priests who accompanied him on his mission to convert the local inhabitants to Christianity during the 7th Century. The priest’s name was Eappa and the story was that he camped, possibly near the present-day church, to carry out the baptisms. Hence ‘Eappa’s Tun’, tun being the Saxon name for an enclosure. This possibility has been largely disregarded of late.

Unlike Yapton, Bilsham does feature in the Domesday book, recorded as Bilesham. As with Yapton, the 13th Century brought with it several different versions of the name including Bullesham, Bolesham and Belesham. Bulsham was a 16th Century spelling which became Bilsom in the 18th Century. It wasn’t until the latter end of the 19th Century that today’s name of Bilsham became the standard. Another name which is very prominent in the village today is Berricourt, the name of one of the historic manor houses of the village standing in its own grounds, bounded by Main Road, North End Road and Church Road in the village centre. It is suggested that its origin could lie in the description of a farm famed for its barley crop. It too has been recorded over the centuries under various names including Bercourte, Berecourt (14th Century), Barecourte, Bercourt (15th Century) and Bury, Berea and eventually Berri (19th and 20th Centuries). Two barns also deserve a mention. The first one, which no longer exists, is Mourners Barn which used to lie behand the Lamb Inn which also no longer exists (demolished in 2014 to make way for housing), in Bilsham Road. It is thought that the name was a corruption of John Marner, the barn’s owner in 1641. During the late 19th Century, a carpenter and his family by the name Marner still lived in the cottage which was to become the Lamb Inn.

The Remains of Denges Barn

Finally, the name of the second barn is Denges and is situated on the south side of the Portsmouth to Arundel Canal between Yapton and Barnham. The name is not related to any person but to the Old English word Dynege, meaning manure or manured. To contact Allen Misselbrook on a local history matter please email: allen@yaptonhistory.org.uk

220 Local History

Strange Tombstone Introduced by local historian Mark Phillips The late Lawrence Newall Graburn (who often used the pen name Newell Duke) was born at Wepham, near Arundel in 1881. His father was Newall Graburn, a longtime tenant of the Duke of Norfolk at Wepham Farm. Lawrence turned to writing after he was forced to give up his farm tenancy in the late 1930's during the agriculture depression. His late daughter Rosamund, who was a good friend of mine and gave me permission for these articles to be reprinted, told me that had he waited a few months, the second world war would have made farming profitable again.

John Hills gravestone, one can just about make out the words

He loved the country life and the local characters with a passion and spent many hours chatting to them in their homes, over garden gates and in the local George & Dragon pub over a pint or two. The following article was first published in August 1953.

There is in Angmering churchyard, between the lychgate and the church, a tombstone of unusual interest. On it is engraved the following: In memory of John Hills, who died October 31st, 1831. Aged 47. He was…”

On making enquiries I heard three explanations, each completely different. The first, from an old man, who said his father had told him that John Hills was a farm-bailiff on the Kingston estate and had died from a kick in the head by a horse. He was thought a lot of by the Squire, who told the widow at the funeral that he was going to erect a stone in his memory. Just before the stone was put up, the Squire found out that a quantity of oats had been sold to the racing stables, and the money had not been paid in. He went at once to the stonemason and asked how far he had got with the lettering. The reply was: “Nearly done, sir. I’ve done the top part, and I’ve got as far as ‘He was’ at the bottom.

“Don’t put any more on there,” replied the Squire. “I thought he was a good and faithful servant, but he was not.” “What shall I do with the stone?” inquired the mason. “Put it up as it is.” And there it is, for all to see today. A second version was given to me by an old stonemason, who was working in the churchyard over seventy years ago with his father. While working, an old seafaring man came and talked to them and asked if they had seen the stone with “He was” on it. They replied that they had not, so he took them to see it. He said he knew Hills, and that he was a very strange fellow and often said he was going to have a short “posy” on his tombstone that would suit them all. People would be sure to say, “He was a drunken old fool.” Or “He was a lazy old man,” or they might say “He was a good fellow,” so “He was” fits them all. A vicar of the past said he disliked the stone, but never gave a reason. It was thought he didn’t like the words “He was” because it sounded as if death was the end, and there was no hereafter. Bringing the Missing Home

2022 marks 20th year for Sussex Search and Rescue (SusSAR) Sussex Search and Rescue is responsible for locating and rescuing vulnerable missing people across Sussex. The team, which entirely consists of volunteers drawn from all walks of life, marks its 20th year of operation in 2022. They are the primary search resource for Sussex Police and can be called out by Sussex Police and neighbouring units at any time day or night. The team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year whatever the weather, members give their time free of charge and expect nothing in return but satisfaction from a job well done. Sussex Search and Rescue is affiliated to Lowland Rescue who co-ordinate the county-based groups and set the training standards they have to adhere to and is a registered charity in England and Wales. Charity number 1097190. The team provide mutual support to other Lowland Rescue teams, including Search Dogs Sussex and other county’s teams, as well as other emergency services such as East and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. All team members are volunteers and so all donations and funds raised go towards providing services. What do they do? SusSAR are professionally trained and qualified to high standards. The team train at least twice a month, in order to keep up the high standards and professionalism required by Sussex Police and Lowland Rescue. Members are qualified in search techniques, first aid, navigation, tracking, bike searching, water safety, communications, search planning and management. They also have a water team trained in swift water rescue and flood response. Being an operational member of the team requires a high level of commitment Since 2002, SusSAR has helped find numerous missing people across the county. Most callouts are to search for vulnerable missing people such as the elderly, people living with dementia, children, and anyone else deemed to be a high risk. The team’s task is to locate them having been

given a briefing by the police, and to return them to a place of safety. Search technicians Becoming a Search Technician is also an alternative outlet for outdoor skills, with many callouts involving advanced navigation, tracking and bike skills. As part of the probationary membership process, volunteers receive training in navigation, first aid and water safety. Following qualification as a search technician there are then further opportunities to progress; they have a water rescue team and a bike team as well as more advanced roles in team leading, search managing and search planning. Their spokesperson Dave Graffy told us; “There is no glamour in any form of search and rescue, and we would not wish to recruit anyone who wanted to join with this as their aim. The work is always sensitive and can also be traumatic on occasions.” He continued, “You need to be a genuine team player with a good sense of collective responsibility, e.g. appreciating that as a unit member your personal behaviour outside of the team (e.g. on the hill etc.) can reflect back on the whole of the unit. When operational we work in the strictest confidence and with the greatest integrity. Frequently we will come under public scrutiny via the media.”

Every address every month SusSAR are not currently recruiting but any requirement for new team members will be announced via their website or social media channels so please check in regularly if this is something you may be interested in. Call outs increasing year on year Sussex Search and Rescue was formed in 2002, following the extensive search for Sarah Payne in 2000 by Sussex police. Since its formation the team have attended in excess of 600 operational callouts. In recent years callouts have increased year on year: 2018 – 36 callouts; 2019 – 46 callouts; 2020 – 51 callouts; 2021 – 59 callouts Costs of around £25k p/a The team does not receive any direct funding from government and is entirely reliant on grants and donations. On an average year it costs upwards of £25,000 for the team to operate, this includes running a small fleet of vehicles, equipping the water and bank search teams, (foot search teams provide most of their own clothing

and equipment) ongoing training for members, training for new recruits, purchasing essential lifesaving equipment and keeping their communications system up to date. Based on number of callouts, number of team members attending and hours spent, it is estimated that annually Sussex Search and Rescue save Sussex Police circa £500k in search related costs. “Sussex Search and Rescue is a vital resource made entirely of volunteers, who are serving the communities of Sussex through their goodwill and dedication. The team work tirelessly, often in extreme and challenging conditions to support Sussex Police, in locating some of the most vulnerable members of the public in times of crisis. The service provided to our communities is simply phenomenal, they are ready to be called on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and often sacrifice their personal time with family and loved ones, to support policing efforts. I am so incredibly proud to be the patron for, and work alongside Sussex search and rescue, who are integral to the policing family and exemplify public service in action. I congratulate all involved in the last 20 years of service, and look forward to our future work together, in keeping those within Sussex safe.” Fundraising for 2022 - can you help? SusSAR have set a target of £20,000 to raise in their 20th year. Identifying Cap Badges A family historian guide by Sussex author Graham Bandy Identifying Cap Badges is the book that has been missing from the bookshelves of family historians, military enthusiasts, and badge collectors alike. In this book you will find badges ordered by what is on the badge itself; be it a dragon, sphinx or castle, horse, lion or tiger. This is badge identification in minutes, rather than hours, with added information on dating badges and many comparison photographs alongside all the pictures of the badges. Added to these pictures are short histories of the regiments and 'family trees' plotting the antecedents of today's units.

One of our volunteers worked here professionally for 52 years! It is great to draw on their knowledge of the place.” Nymans gardens We make our way to the walled garden, that protects a special Chilean collection of plants. Great Magnolias tower over the planting. Even Magnolia stellata, normally a small, slow growing shrub in domestic gardens, is a vast 10 metres high. These will have finished flowering by the middle of April when the Rhododendrons and Azaleas will come into their own, as well as Japanese Acers. We come to a great flowering white Cherry tree and Joe speaks in a reverent tone of voice. “ This is Prunus Thai-Haku (Great White). This

Converting a garage to make space

By Nick Roberts - Roberts Miller Redshaw Group Garages as storage space We store a lot of junk in garages. They are a convenient place for all sorts of bits and pieces. But hidden within those walls, lies an opportunity to expand your living area and create a transformative improvement to your property. It’s that time of year again when we venture into our garages just a little more than usual, perhaps to grab the mower, and ponder the question ‘what if?’. The pandemic has permanently changed the way many of us operate on a daily basis and it’s meant that we’re spending more time at home than ever before. Tips for garage conversions With so much space potential, garages offer a low -cost option to quickly gain an office, an extra bedroom, more living space or a utility room. In most cases, garages already have the fundamental requirements to extend into but it’s important to know that there are far more details than you might think when embarking on a conversion.

Whilst planning permission isn’t usually required, it’s imperative building regulations are met with regards to ventilation, fire safety, thermal performance and structural elements. Most garage conversions are straight forward but it’s not unusual for projects to turn complex when work gets underway, and the layers are stripped back to reveal what surprises are in store to ruin your day. Our advice: instruct an architect or builder you can trust to assess your garage before starting the project. It may stop that swear jar from overflowing! An effective use of space Unsurprisingly, demand for conversions is at an all-time high - they’re a cost-effective way of transforming your home. They don’t encroach on our valued gardens, they cause minimum disruption as far as building work goes and they boost the value of your home. This is why they’ve become one of the most popular ways to gain space. www.robertsmillerredshaw.com

Top three 2022 hybrid hatchbacks By Nadia Goldsmith Not quite sold on electric power? Here are three hybrid vehicles that might convince you going green with your vehicle is a great experience. Toyota Prius The latest, fourth-generation Toyota Prius is built on a new platform and its altered 1.8-litre petrol engine comes with improved efficiency and performance. Perhaps the vehicles greatest asset is how normal it is to drive. With a more responsive on part throttle the Prius is well within its comfort zone at high speeds while also remaining a good performer for daily use. This hybrid is great choice for those who want to save money when filling up and don’t have the opportunity to charge at home. Renault Clio E-Tech

Renault is a strong contender with its hybridised version of the Clio. The Clio E-Tech is powered by a complex powertrain that combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with two, smaller electric motors and a tiny 1.2kWh battery. With two

power sources being used seamlessly at once, it is recognised at being punchier that Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz and holds great real-life practicality. The most credible feature the fact it retains the regular Clio’s handling balance. Toyota Corolla For a hybrid car, the Corolla combines great visual style with well perceived cabin quality and handling sophistication. Based on a new global model platform, the vehicle is at the top of its game in the hybrid motoring world. In its 2.0-litre hybrid form, it even performs with a bit of a sporty edge. For those who prefer to keep their motoring lives simple the Corolla is one of Toyota’s ‘self-charging’ hybrids which is a highly attractive feature for those wanting to make the transition to greener motoring.

The children got to touch and handle some of the creatures, whilst learning about them and their habitats. Fishbourne Palace As part of their Roman topic, Year 4 visited Fishbourne Roman Palace, to deepen their understanding of Roman life. They participated in a workshop where they wrote in Roman on a wax tablet, made mosaics, built an arch and span yarn. Science Week The theme for this year’s British Science Week was ‘Growth’. The week culminated with an assembly showing science in action, led by Mrs Byrne (a parent & science teacher). Children were treated to experiments involving fire, bangs and chemical reactions. We held a Science competition for children to find out about a scientist & create a fruit/vegetable model. Each class carried out an investigation based on the theme of ‘Growth’.

Sea City Year 6 learnt about the Titanic as part of their ‘Storms and Shipwrecks’ topic. In early February, they visited the Southampton Sea City museum. There were interactive activities like steering the ship & stoking the boilers. They learnt about a man from Arundel who was on the ship. They took part in workshops, like: learning about Morse code, how to keep a ship afloat & examining artefacts. Hockey After having hockey lessons with a hockey coach, Year 5 & 6 represented the school with 2 teams in a hockey tournament at Littlehampton Academy. One team came 3rd and the other 5th of 11 teams. Ofsted We had the opportunity to share the strengths of our school and our children’s achievements in a recent Ofsted inspection. Each class was given time to generate design ideas based on natural forms, such as seeds, nests or the microscopic world, and participated in design workshops led by the Two Circles couple. The pupil-led School Council and Eco-Council considered the various ideas and produced a final, integrated design, which was translated into a buildable structure with a meandering turfed roof, planted with spring bulbs. The children came up with a long list of imaginative names for the structure, with ‘The Seedling’ voted as the winning choice. www.amberley.w-sussex.sch.uk

A Lloyds Bank report suggests current & aspiring homeowners are re-evaluating what they want in their home in the wake of hybrid working. Prospective home buyers have saved more money for larger deposits. There are 3 main non-house price-related property trends that appear to influence the housing market in 2022. The “Race for Space” Having space has led homebuyers to sell properties & buy larger/more rural homes. In early 2022, Market Financial Solutions published a survey listing top 15 items on a homebuyers wishlist. Garden/ outdoor space, proximity of public parks & spaces/ potential for conversions/extensions out-ranked square footage, property quality & local area. 1

The rise of the annexe Savills reported that in 2020 enquiries for properties with an annexe increased. Buyers look for increased space for home working, an office or a therapy/consultation room, and an annexe provides somewhere separate to lock yourself away from the main house without having to create a makeshift space in an extra room. The energy efficient home The house building industry has work to do to meet UK Government sustainability targets, and the Lloyds Bank report comments that prospective homeowners place emphasis on energy efficiency - not just for the impact on energy bills. Properties with higher energy ratings can be worth significantly more than less sustainable ones. Due to demand from buyers, UK property prices continue to rise while supply is at an all-time low. With interest rates on the rise, industry experts predict that UK property market will carry on growing in 2022. Helen Say: copywriter/blogger cblservices.co.uk

Char grilled tofu With steamed vegetables & pine nuts, a healthy & quick supper Ingredients - Serves 4 Prep time: 10mins Cook time: 20mins • 2-3tbsp olive oil • Salt and black pepper • 1 clove garlic • 400g firm tofu, chilled • 300g red or yellow young chard stalks • 300g small pak choi • 30g pine nuts • 1tbsp sesame oil Method 1. Mix the oil with seasoning and the clove of garlic halved and squashed, not crushed, to flavour the oil. Preheat a griddle or non-stick frying pan. 2. Slice the tofu neatly into about 20 thin slices and brush lightly with the seasoned oil. Cook on the griddle for a couple of minutes each side until golden. 3. Steam the vegetables separately until the chard is wilted and the pak choi just tender. Drain

on kitchen paper and keep warm. 4. Toss the nuts in a small pan over a high heat until just smelling and colouring slightly. Then add the sesame oil off the heat to just warm through. 5. Arrange the chard and pak choi on heated serving plates with the slices of tofu. Then spoon on the nuts with a little sesame oil. Sprinkle with black pepper and serve really hot. 242 Health & Wellbeing

Good health as we age Nutrition – part 3 by Heather Smith For our final part of this series, let’s take a look at how we should eat now we’re not 20. I’ve left this one to last because really the upshot is that playing by the rules becomes more and more important as you get older, and I’ve previously written a lot about how to structure your diet. The first thing is to remember that the way you eat really does make a difference to how you feel, how you sleep and to your overall health. The days where we could eat whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted, and suffer no ill effects like weight gain or digestive discomfort are gone, as I’m sure you have already realised. This simply highlights the fact that our bodies take longer to recover now we’re a little older, and so the after effects of going off the rails with food might well be bigger. How sensitive your body is to eating off track is an individual thing; you might find that one meal is enough to upset your digestion and that it then takes a couple of days for it to get back to normal. Or, you might find the odd off track meal

here and there isn’t much of an issue but if you find yourself consistently not paying attention to your diet over several days – like on holiday, or over Christmas for example. The same goes for alcohol. There’s probably nothing wrong with a drink or two here and there, but drinking like you did in your 20’s is likely to make you gain weight and kill your energy levels. The impact of alcohol on the duration of your sleep becomes more noticeable and more impactful the further away from your 20’s you get! Drinking is likely the reason you wake up early and struggle to get back to sleep. You don’t need to eat like a saint all the time, but perhaps do consider what and when you’re going to eat, and to decide in advance when it is worth going off course. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

Arundel Town Council Public questions Edited extracts from draft minutes of Arundel Town Council (ATC) meeting 10th March 2022. What can Arundel do for the people of Ukraine? We can provide moral support, practical support and lobby for political support: Moral support: When we fly the flag of Ukraine we are expressing our solidarity with Ukraine, our dislike of the idea that in 2022 one country should invade another causing death & destruction, our admiration of the courage of the people of Ukraine in resisting the Russian armed forces. Practically: Individuals can donate to charities supporting Ukraine. Red Cross’s bucket collection raised £2,864.66, we know sums were raised by initiatives like King’s Arms “£1 per pint” fundraiser. Red Cross have asked to do a street collection at our Farmers Market & we will collect for them in the Town Hall. We can’t donate money from our precept, but if agreed plan to donate remains of this year’s Mayor’s allowance to Red Cross Ukraine appeal. Politically: We can write to MP Andrew Griffith and ask him to do everything he can to expedite

Be Smart, Build Smart.

arrangements for bringing Ukrainian refugees to UK so we are not embarrassed by the UK’s slowness to respond to this crisis. Councillors agreed.

Residents & businesses on Tarrant Street aren’t aware of Market or road closures & haven’t been consulted. Resident informed this is a Chamber of Commerce & ATC event and that WSCC & ADC hadn’t received road closure application. They said the local businesses they’d spoken to don’t want the market as they don’t feel it adds value to their business. Council confirmed Market is Chamber of Commerce event. ATC supported Chamber by applying for funding from Welcome Back Fund. They provide secretariat services for Chamber of Commerce events & applied for road closure on 15th Feb acknowledged by ADC. ATC will relay concerns. Is it good residents can’t access their properties? Acknowledged Chamber could do more consultation with residents & businesses. Pre-covid Arundel’s economy was in decline and initiatives need to happen, hence why ATC invested in the Farmers Market. www.arundeltowncouncil.gov.uk

Amberley Parish Council Committee reports, West Sussex Mind and information items Edited extracts from draft minutes of the Parish Council meeting held on 10th March 2022. Committee reports - Planning Applications – PJC advised that SDNP/21/02009/PRE should no longer be on this list. APC has objected to Application SDNP/22/00219/REM for the same property. It was also noted that application SDNP/21/04732/HOUS had been refused. APC had supported it. Roads and Paths – JC advised (with some relief) that the hedge cutting season had now ended due to bird nesting and would be resumed in September. The new “Houghton Bridge” sign has been erected on the roadside going Westward, the Eastbound sign needs to be placed in an appropriate location. Amberley Neighbourhood Plan delivery – TS advised that application for discharge of planning conditions was submitted to SDNPA, and a response had been expected by 10 March. This was received on the day of the meeting, and the Landscape Officer had raised some minor points. TS will prepare a response, which we will submit in the next week to finalise the discharge

of conditions, allowing work to start. Village Bus – In view of the steep rise in road fuel prices, councillors suggested that the Village Bus would be a more economical mode of transport to take residents to shops. It was agreed that this positive impact should be publicised in the Wildbrooks Magazine. Donation to West Sussex Mind Charity - Recognised support that Mind give to those with mental health issues, many which have been exacerbated by the pandemic. Agreed that donation of £200 should be made. Information Items - GU mentioned that he had reported the damage (falling stones) on the North wall of Amberley Castle to Historic England and to Ms. Anooshka Rawden, Cultural Heritage Lead at the SDNPA. They will be setting up a site meeting with the Castle owners to discuss rectification of the damage. Up until now, the Castle owners had merely said that they were “monitoring the situation”, and when GU asked them what their plans were for repair, it was apparent that they had none. www.amberley-pc.org.uk

Yapton Parish Council Items of correspondence Edited extracts from the draft minutes of the Parish Council meeting 14th March 2022. Defibrillator: Council noted e-mail from resident dated 5th Jan 2022, stating that as a resident of Yapton he noticed public access defibrillator was removed from Family and Children’s Centre in centre of Yapton. He was aware villagers used this on occasion, and enquired if Council could replace unit with public access defib located in centre of village. Current Yapton Village Hall defib only available when open and believes it would be beneficial to have one available outside opening hours. Council resolved to look into possibility of using Red Telephone Box on Bilsham Road as possible location for 24hr accessible defib. Council had details of defib location taken out of use at Family and Children’s Centre. Funding for the Restoration of the Burndell Bridge: Discussion on report received by e-mail on 12th Jan 2022 from member of Burndell Bridge Society, including costings, which was provided to Emerald Gardens Estate. E-mail requested Council considers report which could, in future, form basis of successful allocation of CIL

monies projects. Council supports request in principle & request costings be validated with who would identify what work needs to be done to Bridge & updated report be considered at future meeting. West Sussex Chargepoint Network: E-mail considered from West Sussex County Council (WSCC) dated 18th Jan 2022 regarding West Sussex Chargepoint Network. E-mail noted in Nov, WSCC announced West Sussex Chargepoint Network and asked residents to register interest providing local views on where chargepoints should be located. Email indicated contract for provision of Chargepoint Network is concession contract, so Connected Kerb incur all costs for installing, maintaining & running network. Contract gives community land owners opportunity to use it, so Parish/Town/ Neighbourhood Councils & third sector organisations in county can benefit from chargepoint installation for free. WSCC interested in hearing from Town/ Parish Councils and Village Hall Trusts who own community use land to consider chargepoint installation on it. Council agree to installation of Charge point in Village Hall car park subject to proper controls on use being introduced. www.yaptonpc.gov.uk
