Steve explains the process further “Once the initial enquiry is received, our occupational therapy (OT) volunteer experts in the group review the needs of potential beneficiaries to make sure that the issues and requirements are understood. They often make first contact to discuss further before considering the practical or engineering skills to tackle the case. It is often the situation that standard and readily available equipment is not appropriate for a person’s specific requirements, which sometimes involves multiple conditions. A volunteer engineer visits to discuss the ‘specification requirements’ and agrees a plan of action with the beneficiary.

Local Remap groups in Sussex Steve Whyley, who lives in Storrington, is the chairman of the local group carrying out the Remap projects in West and East Sussex, he tells Sussex Local “We have a team of around 25 people centred around the Brighton area and we need more volunteers, offering whatever time they can spare, to help us ensure we can support as many people as we can, and to ‘make things possible’ for our beneficiaries. Our local group’s area of interest is along the south coast from Littlehampton across to Eastbourne, and northwards to Horsham. There are similar neighbouring local groups covering Chichester and Portsmouth, and in Surrey, and others right across the UK.”

The charity focuses on providing equipment which isn’t readily available under NHS or normal commercial routes. It relies on volunteers with various engineering or practical DIY skills, or occupational therapy know how, or administration experience. There are 70 local groups across the UK, comprising around 900 volunteers in total, undertaking 3000 projects each year.

Bespoke equipment designed & supplied for free Remap is a charity that helps people with disability to achieve greater independence and quality of life. Volunteers design and make bespoke equipment for people of all age groups and ethnicities, and varying conditions and disabilities. Affordability is not an issue since equipment is provided by the charity free of charge. Whether a simple adaptation of a clothes peg to help a one armed person hang washing on the line, a modification to a standard wheelchair or rollator to suit a specific person’s need or helping a person with arthritis in their wrists to continue playing the piano, the charity does it all. Essential equipment that might simply help someone use bathroom facilities can tremendously boost their independence. There are many happy beneficiaries to them, additional independence or being able to do something easier than before, is a major boost.

The charity’s Diamond Jubilee is in 2024, as it was established in 1964 as a single small group of volunteers mainly from ICI on Teesside. From 1968 it’s had a number of local groups around the UK. Steve’s group in Sussex was set up in 1976 by staff and students at Brighton University, one of its original founders is still involved.

Potential beneficiaries can contact the local group either directly, or via their Occupational Therapy (OT) contact if relevant, or via the charity website where you can give some basic information on the potential need. Designing a Dry Garden

A dry garden doesn't rely on rainwater, irrigation or feeding to survive. Instead, plants are chosen for their drought tolerance. If you do not have much spare time to maintain your garden, a dry garden is one for you. Also it conserves water for the nation and gives you a powerful taste of the TheMediterranean.firstthingyou

Poor and stony soil is a bonus in gardens where you want to grow a wide range of ground cover plants with little maintenance. The gravel garden is a good op tion, suppressing the germination of weeds almost entirely. This balance between plant and stone is characteristic of Mediterranean landscapes. One thing you may want for a more wild natural look is for your plants to self seed, so your gravel needs to be thick enough to prevent normal English weeds coming up, but not too impenetrable that your self seeding plants can’t germinate.

Some great Mediterranean plants are Lavender Hidcot, Phlomis, Lamb’s Ear, Va lerian and most of the herbs like Sage, Chives and Oregano, Verbascum and Nepeta. Ornamental grasses include the whole of the Stipa range as well as Calamagro sis Karl Foester and Sesleria autumnalis.

Some of your plants you will know from the traditional English cottage garden like Alchillea, Santolina, Iris’ Synopation’ and Erigeron karvinskianus.

Since he died of an Aids related illness in 1994, his cottage and garden have become a site of pilgrimage for art students, architects and garden designers. As a young boy he was enthralled by flowers, he dreamed of a magical rose garden emerging from the arid shingle. His parents gave him the 1926 illustrated manual, Beautiful Flowers and How as an experiment. The area is one of the driest parts of England and hasn’t been irrigated but is well known for its display of drought tolerant plants. It is also well worth visiting the Scree Garden because it has helped many work out what to do. There is big collection of easy alpines mimicking the growing conditions of stony, mountain ous slopes.

There is a nursery within the gardens which sells various types of plants which are suitable for dry gardens. They offer advice on which plants would suit differ ent types of dry gardens. Gravel garden starter plants in detail Cistus laurifolius is a white flowering Mediterranean species that provides year round evergreen structure. Stachys byzantina offers excellent weed suppressant ground cover, with silver foliage and attractive summer flowers. Stipa gigantea, the large feather grass, is great for height and autumn seed heads. Eschscholzia californica and Nepeta nervosa ‘Blue Moon’ are sun lovers that add vibrant sea sonal colour.

New Fiat Centoventi on its way to showrooms

On the outside, the Centoventi is an evolution of the Fiat Panda city car. Design features include a boxy overall look with interchangeable plastic body and roof panels so owners can change the look to suit tastes. The nose features a multi bar grille, inspired by the original Panda, to show the charging status of the electric powertrain.

On the inside, the space features a large mounting bracket where the passenger seat should be. This space allows fitment of different modules such as a storage basket, child’s car seat or pet carrier, depending on personal needs. In addition, Fiat are offering the option to change seat fabrics so owners can personalise and update their Centoventi during ownership.

As noted by AutoExpress, Fiat are using the Centoventi to make electric motoring available to masses. When revealed in Geneva in 2019, the Centoventi had a battery capable of delivering a 60 mile range. However, with the ability to swap and add battery packs, Fiat claim it can be boosted to up to 300 miles. The battery pod in the Centoventi is located under the passenger space which allows for quick battery changes.

Although under production, this car delivers insight into the future innovation of Fiat’s EV city cars.

The Fiat Centoventi, a city concept car revealed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, is under development as part of Fiat’s new look EV range with 120 available accessories.

goodbye for another year to many of our summer visitors, which have been heading South in increasing numbers through August and into September. It might seem sad to see the songbirds that have serenaded us since the spring leave, and there’s always a poignancy to watching chattering sand martins, house martins and swallows pass overhead and fly out to sea. But September brings fresh spectacles for us to enjoy at RSPB Pagham Harbour & Medmerry reserves, too, as many other birds drop in on migration, making the most of the food and shelter offered by these special places and the neighbouring fields August has already seen several unusual species of wader and a rare squacco heron visit us! Perhaps one of the most charismatic birds you might encounter this time of year, though, is the magnificent and crowd pleasing osprey. We’re often lucky enough to see these large, fish eating birds of prey with their 1.5 metre wingspan as they hover over the water in the harbour or near the shore, before plunging feet first to catch a meal with a terrific splash. Persecution and egg collecting drove these birds to extinction in the UK in the 1800s, but they returned to Scotland in 1954 and have made a steady comeback ever since, and they’re now breeding across Wales and northern England as well. Their numbers have been boosted in England and Wales by the successful reintroduction schemes at Rutland Water (from 1996), and, most recently, in Poole Harbour in Dorset (from 2017) where two osprey chicks fledged for the very first time this summer. So, hopefully, the osprey is likely to become a more common sight for us here in Sussex as well! The visiting birds may stick around for several days, returning regularly to their favourite spots to fish, before they, too, head off to their wintering grounds, sometimes in southern Europe, but more usually in the Gambia or Senegal, in sub Saharan West Africa. As well as the ospreys, there’s another spectacle I especially look forward to each autumn the arrival of flocks of yellow wagtails, or ‘wags’ as they’re affectionately known. Yellow wagtails are beautiful little birds mostly yellow and green, with long, flicking tails and they visit nearby fields to feed up on insects. These birds are also summer visitors, and nest on the ground in open, wet grassland, meadows and arable farmland in lowland areas, mainly in central, eastern and some parts of northern England. But their numbers have declined dramatically in the last 60 years the breeding population fell by an estimated 75 per cent between 1970 and 2009 and so seeing them is becoming more and more difficult. Until they migrate, that is, and we get the chance to see them in all their golden glory on our own doorstep, sometimes in large flocks! It’s thought that declines, particularly in southern England, have been brought about by intensive agriculture and the drying up of some of their favourite habitats. The RSPB has been helping the conservation of yellow wagtails by researching the reasons for their decline in detail and providing advice to farmers on what agricultural practices can best increase the birds’ breeding success in their lowland farmland habitats. Hopefully, this means that yellow wagtails will also become easier for us to see in the future. But, until then, watch the feet of cattle in the fields this month. You might just catch sight of these wonderful birds in shimmering flocks, dancing, rising and falling, searching for flies and other insects, or flitting over your heads as they, too, fly towards the sea to begin their long journeys South. North Mundham

When writing these articles I need to remember that the village is not the same as the parish. Take North Mundham. The village is compact, whereas the civil parish stretches north to the A27 Chichester Bypass and south to the North Wall on Pagham Harbour. Within its boundaries are settlements such as South Mundham, Runcton, Fisher, Bowley, and Honer. North Mundham used to be a traditional Sussex village. Its Lord of the Manor was Mr. William Fletcher (1852 1941), who lived in Bognor at Aldwick Manor (which became Hotham Park House in 1947). His brother, the Revd John Fletcher was the vicar of North Mundham from 1882 until 1926. At the start of his ministry, aged just 27, he decided to enlarge St Stephen’s Church at his own expense. Swept away were the box pews, servants’ gallery, music gallery, brick floor, not to mention the north, south and east walls. The whole chancel was new. All that was left was the tower and the Sussex marble font. Its hinges enabled the font to be locked, thus preventing its Holy Water from being stolen by the Devil or mischievous locals. The architect of this major restoration in 1883 was Arthur Blomfield, later to be knighted. There survives a striking photograph of him, posing shirt sleeved on the scaffolding of the new chancel, his drawings to hand. Below him is the vicar, more formally dressed. The work was completed within seven months at a cost of £5,600, and by December 1883 the church had been re consecrated by Bishop Durnford of Chichester. Soon after completion of this project Blomfield rebuilt nearby St Leodegar’s Church, Hunston in 1885. The vicar lived in some style at the vicarage, with five gardeners and a cowman. His 11 acre garden had tennis court, croquet lawn, and paddock, and was used for village flower shows and church fêtes. He was a keen gardener, with a highly valued collection of orchids. During WW2 huts were built in the garden for RAF servicemen stationed at RAF Merston, actually located just north of the Walnut Tree Inn in Runcton. It was a satellite airfield for the dispersal of fighter aircraft from RAF Tangmere. The huts were later used as a Prisoner of War camp, before becoming two large council estates, Fletcher Close and Fletcher Place, after the vicarage was sold off in 1955. The vicarage itself was converted into luxury flats, and the vicarage garden was replaced by two large council housing estates. Cheek by jowl with the church had been a large thatched Sussex barn and pigeon house, which provided winter meat, belonging to Pigeon House Farm. The barn was later pulled down on the orders of the Lord of the Manor, who feared a thatch fire might easily spread to the church. That we know so much about village life in North Mundham is thanks to a remarkable collection of slides made by Revd Edmund Outram, who was the vicar from 1939 68. The views had been originally taken by photographers earlier in the 20th century and were glass plates. Outram converted them into glass slides, projected by a lantern, and these Outram Slides provide a fascinating snapshot of village life. Two of my favourites are of the former pub, the Island Cottage, and the splendid bus which took villagers on an excursion to the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1925. The tyres are solid and there is no roof, though maybe there was a hood in case of rain. The bus was licensed to carry no more than 32 passengers, at a maxiumum speed of 12mph. It must have been a long, slow journey. Today the landscape around North Mundham, particularly the old airfield site, is dominated by huge glasshouses growing salad crops, mainly lettuce and tomatoes, and then there is the Southern Leisure Lakeside Village, created out of ten former gravel pits, and much favoured by anglers and water sports enthusiasts.

Wassell Mill about 1920

About a mile north of Wassell Mill, can be found the site of another water powered iron forge situated close to Hammer Bridge on the Northchapel road, which worked at intervals between c.1574 and c. 1650. There is also, close by in Pipers Copse, a very early Iron Age camp it can be plainly seen whenever the copse is cut. The earthwork was probably thrown up about 2,000 years ago, not long before the Romans arrived to stay. It is important and unusual in being on low ground in the Weald forest, the great majority of such earthworks in Sussex being on top of the Downs. It is small, only 1.2 acres, but most of the single oval bank is fourteen feet above the bottom of the ditch and was originally a few feet higher, so that if it had a palisade on top, it would present a formidable obstacle. There is no convincing evidence, so far, as to why it was built. Some local, poor quality pudding stone iron ore was found inside the 'camp' and this ore may have been brought there for smelting, but as yet no trace of bloomery cinder has been found.

According to early records, Wassell Mill was built on the site of an iron forge. Thomas Smith, who originated in Petworth was the chief ironmaster who worked Wassell Forge hammer from c. 1579, and probably worked the small furnace below Ebernoe church. He also set up a new furnace c. 1574 in Shillinglee Park but this had become a malt mill by 1620. In 1587, Thomas's son John Smith of Wassell, in partnership with Sampson Colstock (probably of Ifold) rented and worked the furnace at Frith and the forge at Michel Park, so he was operating two forges and one furnace and probably continued to work Shillinglee and Ebernoe furnace: all dependent for their power on the same small stream with its spring in Blackdown. The furnaces and forges were all small and probably short lived , but John Smith was undoubtedly a considerable iron master; he and a few Strudwicks were our principal industrialists. He bought the 'manor' of Ebernoe for £700 in 1594, possibly at the peak of his fortune. John Smith died in 1616, but Wassell hammer, the only works to be owned by the family, was still working in 1621 and 1640. There were probably too many furnaces in this district for the available ore of which supplies were declining by 1610. John Smith had six sons and five daughters and employed a resident tutor; besides Wassell he had a town house in East Street, Petworth. The family continued at Wassell until about 1687, and the house is shewn on an estate map of 1764 as a 'mansion'. Long since demolished, it lay 200 yards north west of Wassell mill, where an old barn still survives. In 1764 Wassell pond was large thirty one acres but is now silted up. In 1668 the Peacheys became lords of the 'manor' of Ebernoe. During the next hundred years they built up a small estate of 950 acres comprising ten farms and some small holdings in the west of the parish, and it was probably during this period in time, that they converted the Wassell forge to a working water corn mill. Ebernoe House was built in 1786 by William Peachey. In 1798 corn was ground at the Wassell water mill (Ebernoe), and at Shillinglee Park Mill. Before the 1870s, whole families using sickles assisted with the harvest; one man might cut about half an acre in a long day. After the harvest, families were allowed the gleanings which were sent to the nearest mill for grinding. Wassell mill was used occasionally until the 1940s. The miller took the bran for his work, the middlings went to the pig and the flour lasted a few months for bread, an invaluable help in the mid nineteenth century when wages were very low and when 'growy' bread and swedes were too often the only food. The farm crops were threshed with flails in the barns during the winter.

Petworth Council Square Fields development Edited extracts of draft minutes of the Town Council meeting held 16th June 2022. The developers of the Square Fields site joined the meeting and provided an update on their work. They reported that following discussion with the South Downs National Park Authority, the layout of the site had been reviewed. The developers advised that the number of properties planned for the site had reduced from 45 to 36 with the percentage of affordable housing increasing from 40 to 50%.

The Friends of St Mary’s (FoSM) had offered to fund up to 50% of the cost to rectify the long standing issues with the Church Clock. The Clerk had sent FoSM the Church Contractor’s report and was awaiting their response.

Strong objection to Whyke Road planning proposal

Concern is raised over the amenity of the potential future occupants of the proposed two dwellings. The rear yard/ garden space may not be sufficient to serve the intended occupants of these family homes, both of which effectively offer 4 bedrooms (or 3 with first floor lounge). The noise and vibration from the adjacent railway line would be very significant, even if it can be brought within the margins of technical acceptability defined within WHO guidelines, as set out in the noise assessment. The occupants of these dwellings would also be likely to suffer from the effects of air pollution due to cars idling at the train crossing, which can be closed for significant periods of time. It would be preferable to consider the use of the whole site in one application.

The council has a strong objection to the proposal. The proposal’s size, position and proximity to the former Mainline Tavern would block significant light to the Tavern’s south facing windows, resulting in significant harm to the occupants’ amenity and significantly restricting the building’s current use and potential for future use and development.
