June 2022 Cover image: Queen Elizabeth II 70th Jubillee

HELLO! June 2022 is a big month for the UK, with Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations over an extended Bank Holiday weekend. There are plenty of official events planned for our region as well as many street and garden parties. Don’t forget Father’s Day on 19th June too. Other events this month include the Big Church Day Out which resumes at Wiston after a twoyear enforced Covid break. If you’ve ever seen the road signs and wondered what it’s all about then read our main charity article. Garden designer Andrew Staib looks at including trees in your garden (space permitting!) and health expert Heather Smith offers some straight-talking weight-loss advice. Fancy a solar-powered car which you never have to charge? This month’s motoring feature looks at the futuristic Aptera with a 70km range which is expected to launch next year. Solar energy for homes is also our topic in this month’s property market feature. We have our regular prize crossword; seasonal recipe and you can also win a family ticket to The Children’s Trust Supercar event at Goodwood. Until next time, enjoy the long days.

212 Charity & Community

Sussex Snippets Community news from across the counties Two Velocity road patching machines are being deployed across West Sussex to proactively seek and fill potholes before the regular inspections by Highways teams. In the first four weeks of the 2022/23 financial year the machines completed just over 1,100 repairs. Over 60 disadvantaged children and families will receive help and support, thanks to a grant of £30,000 from Sussex Freemasons to the charity Family Support Work (FSW). FSW supports disadvantaged families and their children who live in isolated rural areas or deprived seaside towns in Sussex. www.sussexmasons.org.uk. Sussex homeless charity Turning Tides are hosting their biggest SleepOut yet on Saturday 18th June to raise vital funds to support the life-saving services they provide. Participants will receive a light evening meal, breakfast, and unlimited hot drinks before spending the night under the stars within the grounds of Worthing Football Club. Participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship and can receive lots of support with this from the fundraising team. You can book your place online - www.turningtides.org.uk. Do you have 30 – 45 minutes available each week to make, from your home, a Telephone Befriending Call? These telephone calls are to people who say they are socially isolated or feel alone and who would welcome the opportunity to chat with a lovely volunteer. Calls cover hobbies, interests, memories and are focused on the recipient so require empathetic listening skills. For more information about this rewarding volunteering role, please email Deborah Hollywood, via sc-tr.voluntaryservicesbefriending@nhs.net or call 07435 732957

The West Sussex children’s hospice Chestnut Tree House, has launched a new challenge event – Wild Wood Swim – and is looking for participants to take on a 1km, 3km or 5km open water swim to raise vital funds. Sussex Wildlife Trust is urging people to resist feeding the ducks at Woods Mill nature reserve because excess bread is polluting the lake and harming wildlife. Excess bread is harmful to the ducks and can cause malnutrition, disease and bad behaviour. They are seeing a large group of last year’s ducklings constantly roaming the reserve in search of people who might feed them, rather than exhibiting natural behaviour. This is detrimental to their welfare and also poses a nuisance to visitors. www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk

216 History

Celebrate Sussex Day on 16th June! A brief history of the county by local historian Chris Hare Sussex is a county with a proud tradition that dates back some 1,600 years. Unlike other English counties, such as Surrey, Hampshire, or Dorset, Sussex once was a kingdom. Yes, there once was a king of Sussex! This was the land that Saxon migrants made their Chris Hare with the home in the fifth centu- Sussex flag ry. Historians are divided as to how brutal the conquest was: some believing that the native population were slaughtered or forced to flee to the west; while others think there was a great deal of assimilation. No one can be sure, as written records from those times are few and unreliable. What is known is that nearly every place name in Sussex is Saxon in origin. Other counties, for example, Devon and Cornwall, have a good mix of Saxon and pre-Saxon place names, but here in the land of the ‘South Saxons,’ there is very little to remind us of the days of the Roman Empire or of the British tribes that co-existed with it, their history was, at the very least overshadowed by the arrival of the newcomers. The first king of Sussex, according to the AngloSaxon Chronicle, was Aella, who landed on the Sussex coast with his three sons and their families. The old English scribes loved to paint a picture of valiant and ruthless warriors, who, in a series of glorious battles, cowed and killed the natives who resisted them. The truth, though, may be less bloody. It seems likely, that in many instances, existing communities, found common cause with the settlers. Evidence from archaeological sites, like Highdown, north of Goring and Ferring, suggests that the two ethnic groups worked together for a common cause. The last king of Sussex was Aethewalh, who ruled in the mid-seventh century. He made alliance with King Penda of Mercia against their mutual enemy, Wessex. For a time, the alliance proved glorious for Sussex, and its proud king invaded and occupied the Meon Valley and the Isle of Wight. He ruthlessly put to death surviving

princes on Wight, who might threaten his rule. By this time, all the old English kingdoms had been converted to Christianity, all apart from Sussex, which clung to its pagan ways. When Bishop Wilfrid of Ripon arrived on the Sussex coast at Selsey, in 666, the Sussex king ordered his men to attack the bishop and his monks, and they were lucky to escape with their lives. However, 20 years later, fete dealt Sussex a cruel blow: the harvests failed and starvation beckoned. The great Wessex king, Caedwalla, who was a great friend of Bishop Wilfrid, overwhelmed Sussex in a surprise attack, crushing all resistance, and subsumed Sussex into Wessex. Yet, the old instincts died hard, and during the following reign of King Ine, Sussex rose in revolt, led by two men of royal birth, Byrthun in the west and Andhun in the east. It would seem that the idea of an East and a West Sussex dates back to those far off days. The Godwin family, who ruled England with an iron fist in the early eleventh century, had ancestral lands at Bosham. It was one of the Godwins, Harold, who was declared king of England in January 1066, and died, along with all his nobles at the Battle of Hastings, ten months later. The Sussex flag, unlike other county flags I could mention, is not the creation of clever tourist executives, but dates back to medieval times. Sussex knights went into battle with the ‘martlets’ emblem emblazoned on their shields.

Yes, Sussex has been around a long time and may it continue to do so for many years to come. Chris Hare will be leading a guided the Duck Pond Sailors walk around the village of Slindon on Sussex Day, Thursday, 16th June. Local shanty and folk song group, the Duck Pond Sailors, will be singing songs of Sussex, its history, its folklore, and its landscape. In Your Garden

Monthly gardening ideas & tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens

Bringing height in to your garden Introducing new trees into a garden can fill people with trepidation. The wrong tree can outgrow its space, cast shade, or it can drop unwanted leaves. Its roots can undermine houses or it fails to survive due to soil or wind conditions. This article will help you choose the right tree for the right place. Given that most of our gardens are on the small to medium size I will concentrate on trees from 2 to 5 metres in height Photinia Trees must be chosen carefully. A well positioned tree with a delicate and spacious leaf and branch character can create a canopy that will give your garden a sense of height, enclosure, intimacy and privacy without dominating the garden. Proportion Choosing more than one new tree in your garden can give your garden a more glade like effect. They can soften the effect of neighbour’s houses and overlooking windows and actually make the garden feel bigger as a canopy immediately stimulates our memories of the countryside and different landscapes we have visited. If your garden is quite bare, planting trees normally means selecting more than one so that the ‘weight’ and ‘volume’ of them will balance each other. However if you have a large tree next door, you can factor this in as your own, and therefore all you need to do is balance this neighbour’s tree with one or two of your own. Evergreen Trees Small evergreen trees The more robust the evergreen presence you want, say for privacy, the more dense the leaf canopy needs to be. This can have the advantage of being perfect for screening but they will still cast shade and if you grown them near a fence careful that over time they won’t also block out your neighbours view or light. Also they

will want to protrude outwards as well as grow upwards so this has to be factored in. For a denser canopy of leaves, these are some of my favourites: Arbutus Uendo, Magnolia Little Gem, Ligustrum excelcium, Loquat and Photinia. Photinia is a common tree, normally kept as a hedge, but still a high performer with its electric red leaves. If you have acid soils you can go for the Rhododendrons and Camellias. More delicate evergreens are Olives, Pittisporum ‘Silver Queen’ and Viburnum tinus whilst Ceanothus can form an ‘umbrella’ like shape over a bed or path. Delicate small trees that lose their leaves Don’t forget you relax in your garden mainly in the warmer months so think hard before you buy an evergreen. They are less generous to wildlife normally, and will you really be needing their shade, privacy or dense green backdrop over the Winter months? For a more open canopy that lets dappled light through, you could think of Amelenchier lamarki, Weeping Birch, Weeping Cherry, Malus Red Sentinal, Sorbus Pink Pagoda (or the smaller Sorbus pseudovilmorinii), Cercis Forest Pansey (or the smaller green leaved Cercis Avondale). Albezia is a heavenly tree though it needs a lot of sun and a sheltered position.

222 Gardening • For Winter colour

have a look at Hamamelis × intermedia ‘Jelena’. • For a tropical look, try Catalpa bignonioides ‘nana’. • For a small tree Hamamelis × intermedia ‘Jelena’ with amazing purple leaves and rich dark purple berries look up Malus toringo ‘Scarlett’. Shrubs Some shrubs can be turned into trees by pruning the lower branches. Some examples are: Sambucus ‘Sutherland’s Gold’ and Sambucus ‘Black Lace’. So, have a look at your garden and see if you can use that unlimited extra space in your garden – the sky! There is also Prunus amanogawa, Hamamelis and the perfectly formed, classic of all small trees, the Japanese Acers. The only trouble with these is they like to be the centre of attention and need a lot of neutral space around them. Laburnum Golden Showers, is a tree that has gone out of fashion but after the yellow display of flowers in Spring has a very interesting branch structure. Prunus Hally Jolvette is worth considering as it has a well behaved rounded canopy and only gets to 5 metres in height. Also think about Acer griseum (The Paperbark Tree), Salix exiguta and the two small Magnolias, ‘India Magic’ and ‘ Laura’. For wildlife try the Hawthorn ‘Prunifolia’. The Salix is a great bad haircut looking tree and suits filling up a space in the very back of a garden or next to a large pond. All of these trees will give your garden a lovely sense of breadth and depth without a tree surgeon being called in every year. Also the vertical fruit trees like Malus ‘Adirondack’ and Malus Ballerina can be tucked away in a bed and nicely contrast any weeping trees you might have. Unusual Trees For more unusual trees you could try Rhus lacinata (though it will sucker with its roots over

The ‘Gum Ball’ only gets to 2.5m and as you can imagine the autumn colours alone make it worth growing. Acacia pravissima is another interesting tree with an open canopy, especially if you are considering a Mediterranean style garden.

Turning wasted space into a working place By Nick Roberts RMR Group The post pandemic world has arrived. It’s a more hygienic world. A world of new perspectives and habits. And for many of us, this new world has created permanent new lifestyles; working from home – once abused and frowned upon – now covers a large percentage of the population. The catch being a lack of suitable space to operate efficiently at home. By now, many will have refined their working home routines to mitigate against kids bursting in demanding for their Rice Krispies, but that doesn’t mean the situation can’t be improved. Working from home is more than just setting up a desk and asking everyone to be quiet. This is reflected in the huge spike of converting outbuildings and building entirely new ones in the garden. The environment we work in affects our day-to-day performance so having the right space can compound into a massive improvement over the course of 12 months. Luckily, the process of converting outbuildings is usually straight forward. It’s even a pretty simple

process when building one from scratch. However, there are some important factors you need to consider; most notably planning permission. In most cases, these projects fall under ‘permitted development’ so you don’t need formal planning permission. The mistakes arise when you assume that's the case based on your own calculations, especially if your home is listed or under a conservation area. This is when some friendly, professional advice comes in handy! But, as we all know, it’s not all about size! With garden offices, location is important too. So, if you’re looking to overcome your Zoombarrassment, converting an outbuilding or building a garden office could be the way the go. Get in touch with your local expert today to find out what’s possible. www.robertsmillerredshaw.com

Big Church Day Out A big deal at the Wiston Estate by editor Kris Thomas

35-40,000 visitors Many events are making a welcome come back this summer and Big Church Day Out (BCDO) is one of them. Ticket holders who were unable to come in 2020 due to Covid-19 have rolled over their tickets and these, combined with new ticket sales, mean that the 2022 event is on track to host 35-40,000 visitors this month. History

The idea for a Christian orientated music festival was conceived in 2009 after a meeting between Tim Jupp and the Goring family of Wiston estate. Tim Jupp was a founding member of contemporary English Christian band Delirious? (the question mark is part of the name). Originating from Littlehampton, the band had a successful career between 1992 and 2009 playing in over forty countries and in the UK at venues such as Wembley Stadium, Hyde Park and the o2 Arena, as well as on the main stage at Glastonbury in 1999. Tim’s idea with BCDO was to hold an event to serve the churches in the area but to also welcome non-religious people who were looking to experience a friendly and safe

local music festival. Big Church Day Out was the first ever event to be held on the Wiston estate and 13,000 people attended the first one. Tim explained that all did not run smoothly that first year! “It was incredibly hot and we had some serious traffic problems. Food vans didn’t turn up, there wasn’t enough drinking water nor enough team members...The bravest thing we did was to carry on and do the 2nd year.”

Since that challenging first year, the team have developed the infrastructure including building tracks to make the estate suitable for other large-scale events such as the popular Steam Rally and the many other events that Wiston now hosts. The festival was extended from one day to three days in 2010 and the number of attendees went up to 25,000. What’s it all about? Primarily it’s a summer music festival - not quite on the scale of Glastonbury but it’s grown year on year. Tim elaborates; “There are 6 music stages and it’s all sorts of music - opera, classical, rock and roll, hip hop - all genres. This year there will be 70 different artists over the weekend, the larger names are American as the Christian music industry in America is huge. There will be around 70 food vans and lots of

children’s activities - fairground rides, and such. Many are free. We have a team of 20 working for the event all year, but more than 3,000 team will be on site during the event who are responsible for looking after up to 40,000 people including approximately 700 caravans and 8,000 cars. It’s exciting and challenging and takes a full month to set up. We thought, go large or go home! Every Christian denomination is welcome as are the non-religious. The name reflects the fact that it’s inclusive - a space for all churches to come together and gather for a weekend”. About half of the attendees (over 15,000 people) will be camping at Wiston which is at an additional cost to the festival itself. The 2022 event spans 4 days from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. Campers can arrive from Thursday and stay through to Sunday morning. The acts take place on the Friday and Saturday. This year the event is on the same weekend as the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Tim; “There will royal fancy dress, jubilee songs and we will be streaming live TV events plus there will be a service for the queen in the Wiston chapel. Jubilee beacons will be lit across the South Downs and one will

be at Chanctonbury Ring - campers can walk up to the ring from the Wiston estate.” Coming back after Covid “Coming back after the pandemic has been a challenge,” explained Tim, “Big Church has survived due to people’s generosity and because 2020 ticket holders were happy to carry their tickets forward. The event industry is recovering and everything costs more now. When we went on sale with the ‘22 tickets, there were still Covid restrictions in place - it felt risky and it’s a big relief that things are back to normal now. There is always space and it’s all outdoors so

Rain is a bigger problem!” Costs / Fundraising BCDO 2020 was cancelled just eight weeks before the event was due to take place and many of the costs were unrecoverable. BCDO doesn’t make a profit and in fact will need donations to make up the shortfall from this year’s event. 120 different charities are involved and sponsor the various activities, raising their own profiles at the same time. BCDO itself is an independent charity with an annual budget in excess of £2.5 million. They raise around 90% of this through their main activities - sponsorship, ticket sales etc but have to fundraise for the remaining 10%, around £250,000. An important part of the festival weekend is fundraising on behalf of the BCDO partner charity, Tearfund. Tearfund is a Christian charity that works with churches in more than 50 of the world’s poorest countries.

come along” says Tim, “Many people come in groups, some belong to a church and they bring along their friends, family and neighbours. Groups vary in size from 10 - 200 and they come from all over the UK and mainland Europe, mostly France, Holland and Germany.”

I asked Tim if he had plans to launch another Big Church Day Out somewhere else. “No, we don’t have any expansion plans. We did take it up north for a couple of years but the southern one has become so well known and there’s still room to grow at Wiston. Our aim is to support the local area, it brings in business to shops, hotels, pubs. The event helps support the local economy and we also raise a lot of money usually for international development work via Tearfund. 3rd & 4th June 2022 www.bigchurchdayout.com

Gaining & losing the same weight? By Heather Smith Are you in a cycle of losing and regaining the same pound or two for months at a time?

Over five days, that’s a 2500 calorie deficit. Which will also result in weight loss.

Do you find yourself sticking to your food plan and creating a calorie deficit during the week, and taking a more ‘flexible’ approach at the weekend? Have you ever thought about how easy it is to cancel out your hard-gained calorie deficit – and perhaps even end up in a calorie surplus?

But, if at the weekend you eat more than your body needs to maintain weight, then you’re literally eating (or drinking) away the calorie deficit you’ve created.

The weekend makes up 29% of your week. 48% if you include Friday too. When you look at the numbers like this, it becomes easy to see how much of an impact the more relaxed approach at the weekend can have. Whether you’re counting your intake, or taking the more simple (and for most people, likely just as effective – at least at first) approach of simply making better choices for most meals, then you should be achieving at most a 500 calorie deficit each day. Over seven days, that’s a 3500 calorie deficit. Which will result in weight loss.

The calories add up annoyingly quickly. You could happily eat back a 2500 calorie deficit with a takeaway and a bottle of wine. So, choose when you’re going to eat or drink into your calorie deficit carefully, and in full knowledge. But also remember that no food is ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Nothing should be banned or off limits. We value different foods for different reasons at different times. Just know that going all-out at the weekend to ‘reward’ yourself for sticking to your plan all week might not be helping you get closer to your goal. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

Solar Panels - are they worth it? Investing in your home for renewable energy by Helen Say Solar panels as an alternate source of energy To help hit “Net Zero by 2050”, the UK Government announced a gas boiler ban in 2019. By 2025 no new houses can have one and by 2035, the UK will phase out their installation altogether. This caused a stir in the energy industry (this was before the current turmoil of world events putting pressure on energy prices) and many are looking for alternate energy to heat their homes. One option is solar energy. Money Saving Expert says installing solar panels on an average home costs around £5K, and the impact on energy bills depends on various aspects of your home. Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical household with a 3.5 kilowattpeak system can save between £170 - £440 per year on energy bills. You can be paid for solar energy you “export” to the national energy grid with the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme.

Property of the month

Fern Road, Storrington, RH20 4LW £975,000 Situated on the outskirts of the village is this five bedroom detached family home. Located at the end of Fern Road, property comprises: entrance, good sized kitchen with bay window overlooking garden, lounge, downstairs cloakroom and utility cupboard, dining room, family room and downstairs shower room. On first floor are four bedrooms, bedroom three has en-suite shower room, family bathroom plus loft/dressing room accessed via stairs from master bedroom. Ensuite potential from Master Bedroom plus fifth bedroom with own staircase. Outside comprises: driveway parking for several vehicles, good sized rear garden and patio area. Fowlers: 01903 745844

Is the UK weather beneficial for solar energy? Despite the UK’s grey and gloomy reputation, it has enough sunlight to power solar panels and gets the same level of solar energy as areas in France/Spain. It's about daylight, not hours of sunshine or temperature. Solar panels use light to produce electricity, not heat. Though they obviously produce more power in a sunny day, they still produce a considerable amount of energy when it’s cloudy. Wind and snow aren’t necessarily bad. Wind can be a cooling mechanism for domestic solar panels and make them more efficient. A light flurry of snow will melt with the panel’s residue heat, although heavy snowfall will need to be brushed away as it’ll prevent the panel working to its full potential. If you’re considering switching to renewable energy, solar panels are worth further investigation. Find out more about the SEG scheme from the www.gov.uk website, and Energy Savings Trust has a comprehensive guide for solar energy via: energysavingtrust.org.uk/advice/solar-panels Helen Say is a freelance copywriter/blogger.

Aptera’s futurist “never charge” solar EV By Nadia Goldsmith California start-up Aptera Motors are the creators of the world’s first “never charge” solar electric vehicle. In 2020 Aptera unveiled their futurist-looking three-wheel design with a built-in solar array. Integrating 700 watts worth of solar cells and providing 70-kilometres of driving range each day from the sun alone and up to 1,600 kilometres from its lithium-ion battery (top of the range model variant) the Aptera electric vehicle is undoubtedly in the EV spotlight. “With Aptera’s Never Charge technology, you are driven by the power of the sun,” says co-founder Chris Anthony. “Our built-in solar array keeps your battery pack topped off and anywhere you want to go, you just go”. It is no secret that Aptera Motors are leading impressive innovation in the EV vehicle market. Their streamlined, three-wheel, pod-like designs are lightweight and deliver improved aerodynamics with a drag co-efficient of just 0.13. The electric vehicle is capable of acceleration from

0-100km/hr in less than 3.5 seconds with the 150kW motor option, and 5.5 seconds with the 100kW motor. Aptera state their “never charge” three-wheel solar electric vehicle is “the most efficient vehicle ever made available to consumers” as it provides the freedom to do more with less impact on the planet, “harnessing the power of the sun to make life off the grid a reality for everyone”. Aptera are nearing production of the range and are expecting to launch to market as soon as 2023 with keen purchases now placing their reservations to help build a greener, more efficient motoring future.

Bury Primary School Children & families arriving from Ukraine, new toilets & cloakroom Over the past few weeks, we have been lucky enough to welcome some new children and their families arriving from Ukraine. It has been a privilege to see how welcoming our children have been as they make friends with their new classmates. Despite one of our new children speaking very little English, it is amazing how quickly you can still communicate by playing with a rugby ball or a train set – the laughter coming from the children does not need translating. Our parents have also been superb at rallying around and supporting our new families, making playdates, offering uniform etc. It really has been fantastic to see the whole Bury team pull together. There has also been great excitement from the children as the new toilets have been completed. In the last few months, we have been able to completely refurbish all of the children’s toilet facilities and successfully set up a brand new classroom for our Reception children. Over the next couple of months we are going to be

St Mary’s C of E Primary School, Pulborough Chichester Festival Theatre’s (CFT) art outreach programme Year 3 classes at St Mary’s CE (Aided) Primary Pulborough had an exciting day this week when they were visited by a representative of Chichester Festival Theatre’s Art Outreach programme. This initiative has been a result of the pandemic when outreach to schools was put on hold, so CFT are delighted to be able to get out and encourage art activities again. The children spent the day making and decorating paper lanterns, which will be used in the Carnival of Lights in Chichester on June 10. The children first of all made a framework of willow sticks in a pyramid shape, then applied a glue mixture to tissue paper and wrapped it around the frame.

Once the glue had dried, they chose their bird silhouettes to apply to the sides. Birds were chosen as a link to the Pulborough Brooks RSPB and the Pulborough Duck Race; also, as pointed out by several children, to the Pulborough Rugby Club, which has a swan as part of its logo. Miss Heasman and Mrs Benson, the Year 3 teachers, were very impressed with the amount of perseverance shown by the children throughout the day. “It was lovely to see the children enjoying the opportunity to work as a team. The children were very pro-active and keen to do their own thing without asking for help, which is something we encourage at St Mary’s”, said Mrs Benson. Miss Heasman added “It was a pleasure for the children to experience different techniques, it was a much more structural approach. Their resolve was tested and they rose to the challenge superbly”. Thank you to Chichester Festival Theatre for this wonderful opportunity. www.st-marys-pulborough.w-sussex.sch.uk

Bury Parish Council Planning Application, Tree Planting & Footpaths Edited extracts from draft minutes of the Environment/Planning Committee 25th April 2022. Planning Application - SDNP/22/00623/HOUS Eedes Cottage, Bignor Park Road, Bignor West Sussex, RH20 1EZ: Construction of outdoor swimming pool and installation of grey water harvesting plant. Councillors resolved to remain neutral on this application. Pill Pond - To receive an update on plans to renaturalise Pill Pond. Chair advised the planning application was still being drawn up by the South Downs National Park Authority who were currently busy but hoped it wouldn’t be much longer. Queen’s Jubilee Tree Planting - The Chair advised that any trees planted on the ridge by Lord’s Piece would require fencing protection from cattle. He had obtained a quote from Primavera for the seven trees which was £2,900 and therefore made the area unviable. The Chair had spoken to a resident who had lost 12 trees in the recent storm so the Council could ask to place the trees on his land. Councillor Champness suggested the cricket ground and the Chair

stated that some of trees planted by Chris Briggs had not taken so there could be room there. Councillors agreed they should visit the recreation ground to inspect where would be best to plant them. Fingerpost signs - Plans to refurbish the fingerpost road signs in the parish. The Chair informed the committee that Primavera was still working on the signs and that they should be ready by the Jubilee weekend. Footpaths - Plans to install steps on public footpath 761. The Chair informed Councillors that he had met the landowner on which footpath 761 leads to the riverbank and that he agreed steps could be installed to prevent people slipping during wet periods. He said a handrail would not work as the cattle would rub against it causing it to snap. The Chair believed permission was required from the Environment Agency along with a Bespoke Flood Risk Activity Permit which would cost £170. However, WSCC said they would pay for the steps to be built. www.buryparishcouncil.co.uk

Transport issues & Council items

Edited extracts of draft minutes of the Parish Council meeting held 15th March 2022. Transport issues in the village - Council noted a stalemate regarding any shift with speeding along A29. WSCC officer for linage and signs confirmed that the lines were due to be repainted during April, and thinks reapplication of paint will reduce the driver’s bad driving. When asked about repainting after any resurfacing is carried out along the road, they couldn’t ensure this as it is handled by a different department. Residents would need to advise of this via Love Sussex. Noted that drivers taking speed awareness courses are given guidance that 30mph can be identified by presence of streetlights, rather than repeater signs, where limit is 40mph. Members discussed suggestion that area by the school is reduced to 20mph, possible support might be through Safer Routes for Schools. Council advised they corresponded with Representative Boundary Commission advising of ten points and was encouraged that should boundary changes come into effect, ongoing A29 issues would involve three different Members of Parliament.

Items from Members of the Council/Parish Clerk - Council updated members regarding Jubilee Street Party on 5th June: the committee have applied for the road closure, numerous bands are due to play throughout the day through to 10 in the evening, various events and stalls are going on during the day along with a raffle. Council advised that the Alban Head had received a request to hold family picnic event on the Thursday 2nd June. This is being organised by the group who had raised a large amount of the funding for the Children’s Play Area. Council update from Horsham District Council: • Recent Food Waste trial in Billingshurst, as the Government is keen to make this a mandatory collection. Advised that 41% of waste in the current refuse bins is food waste. • The consultation for the A27 bypass has closed, the option expected is the grey route – SDNP didn’t object to the route, but commented about the setting and the environmental impact within the park. www.coldwalthampc.org.uk

Fittleworth Parish Council Platinum Jubilee Projects and Public questions Edited extracts of draft minutes of the Parish Council meeting held 21st March 2022. Queens Platinum Jubilee Projects - Jubilee Planters – Council gave outline of the Millennium Arch Planter and Maintenance project. 4 companies approached to provide quote Oakmasters agreed to cost project. Discussions held with Oakmasters - a design produced by them, cost for planters and installation is £1985 + VAT. A £250 grant towards planters has been agreed by Chichester District Council (CDC). Oakmasters provided additional quote to renovate the Arch at a cost of £11,000 + Vat. Resolution to commission Oakmasters to supply and install

Planters by Jubilee weekend and agree maintenance plan for Millennium Arch was Proposed and seconded by Council and agreed by meeting. Council raised it has been some time since last survey of Arch. Council reported Oakmasters inspected it in January 2022 and it is considered safe, however it does need maintenance. Public questions – Chairman of Football Club – dog fouling on football pitch. Fulham Football Club cleared mess from pitch to avoid game being cancelled. There are 2 signs saying no dogs allowed. Clerk will check condition of existing signs. Potentially something could be put on Nextdoor, Parish Magazine and Facebook page reminding residents dogs aren’t allowed on Recreation Ground. Ukrainian Refugees – Member of public asked, if anyone in village gets a refugee, then residents will look to start support group. Council advised support will come through CDC. There are Selfhelp groups on Facebook. Agreed that Clerk would put message on Nextdoor, Facebook and website asking for contact details of anyone able to offer support, which could then be forwarded to hosts. www.fittleworth-pc.org.uk

Community Café/Hub Every household in the Parish will soon receive a short questionnaire to find out if residents would welcome a new Café, one which would be a welcoming environment for all, a place to meet new people or catch up with friends. So that we can get a true response, we ask you to take the time to complete and return the questionnaire - it can be done online or dropped into one of the shops or our Parish Council office. If you have any comments ahead of the questionnaire or would like to discuss this with one of our councillors, please contact Nikki our clerk, details below. Contact the Parish Council Email: clerk@wcpc.org.uk or @wcpc.org.uk for planning. Pulborough Parish Council Neighbourhood wardens, Parish office & meetings Pulborough Neighbourhood Wardens We are pleased to say that our second new Neighbourhood Warden took up post in mid-May. She is Louisa Hull, who joins Ross Phillips in looking after the community of Pulborough. She will have a period undergoing induction and training but hopefully by the time you read this you may well have seen her out and about already in Pulborough with Ross. The wardens’ telephone numbers are: Ross – 07584 337476, and Louisa – 07584 337475. Changes at the Parish office Change is in the air again as our Deputy Clerk decided to take up a new challenge and left the Council in May. At the time of writing this, we have started the process of seeking a replacement to support the Clerk and Council. Public wanting to contact us at the Parish Office can do so by telephoning 01798 873532, emailing clerk@pulboroughparishcouncil.gov.uk or visit in person Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9.00am-12.30pm.

Annual Parish meeting and Council Meetings Our Annual Parish Meeting took place on 10th May, which was a return to an inperson event after last year’s having to be online and 2020 being cancelled. The draft Minutes of the meeting will be published on our website as soon as possible. We do hope many of you took the opportunity to attend. This was of course a residents’ meeting but do remember that all our parish council and committee meetings are open to the public to attend. There is usually a 15 minute adjournment when members of the public can ask questions on items on that agenda (you need to pre-register for this though) and all our meeting agendas and minutes are available on our website. Heather Knight Clerk. www.pulboroughparishcouncil.gov.uk
