New Home Manager for popular Storrington care home

Rewilding Britain's Rewilding Innovation Fund has granted funding to the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project, which aims to restore the depleted ocean kelp forests along the Sussex coastline. Kelp is a natural carbon store and encourages breeding grounds for fish and other marine animals. www.rewildingbritain.org.uk

Sussex Police Commissioner Katy Bourne has been meeting with partners, police and retailers to look at options for preventing anti-social behaviour as well as ways to carry out early interventions and enact immediate justice where offenders are seen in the community putting things right. Ms Bourne wants communities to suggest what reparative activities they’d like to see and will be releasing details of how to do this soon.

Sussex Police have hired an additional 429 police officers as part of the government's initiative to recruit 20,000 officers across England and Wales by the end of March 2023. In addition, 250 extra officers were recruited, funded by an increase in the police portion of local council tax, bringing the total number of additional officers to 679 to improve neighbourhood and response teams.

Ofsted Inspectors have praised West Sussex County Council’s Children’s Services for its ‘relentless approach to improving practice,’ giving the service an overall rating of ‘requires improvement’, with two ‘good’ judgements and two that ‘require improvement to be good’. This rating is up from the 2019 full inspection of Children’s when all areas were rated as inadequate.

Liberal Democrats win Horsham District Council In the May local elections, the average overall

turnout at the election was 37.32%. The overall make-up of Horsham District Councillors is as follows: Liberal Democrats - 28, Conservative11, Green - 8, Independent - 1, meaning the Liberal democrats win overall control.

Switch to digital parking permits

From 3 July 2023 digital permits for Horsham's Controlled Parking Zones, including resident, visitor and trader permits, can be purchased. The move to digital permits will mean there will be no need to display paper permits in vehicle windows - drivers can simply purchase the resident permit online and receive an email notification when it is active.

The virtual permits are provided by a system called MiPermit. This system enables customers to purchase and manage their parking permits online, 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. MiPermit can be accessed through the Council’s website or by telephone. This will apply to both resident’s and visitor’s permits.

Veterans Volunteer Service launches

Lodge Hill Activity Centre at Watersfield was hosted an information and launch event for the Veterans Volunteer Service (VVS) in April.

The VVS is run by military veterans from all services focusing on support and intervention for young people around West Sussex. The project harnesses the skills and experience of veterans to provide positive reinforcement and training for young people in areas such as fitness, first aid, self-awareness and resilience. It is also aimed at helping veterans leaving the forces to settle back into civilian life.

A pilot Youth Focus Group scheme has already been highly successful in reducing anti-social activities, particularly around the Littlehampton area.

With its charity status application progressing, the Veterans Voluntary Service will soon be recognised as a not-for-profit charity, enabling it to forge ahead and support more young people and veterans from Sussex and beyond.

Lodge Hill’s provides the venue for the VVS to bring young people, as part of their resilience

programme participating in various scenarios and team building activities, within its 32-acre woodland site.

Borde Hill - The World in One Garden

Borde Hill Gardens is a mecca for those interested in beautiful views, rare plants and Champion trees. Colonel Stephenson Clarke, who created the garden from the late 19th Century onwards, sponsored plant hunting trips throughout the world. The result is a fantastic collection of rare trees, including 65 Champion trees (these are the largest of their particular species in the whole of Britain).

Set in 383 acres of Grade 2 Heritage listed landscape, the gardens consist of a loosely connected arrangement of ‘rooms’- the Azalea Ring, Italian Gardens, the Rose Garden and perennial borders whilst being more wild on the edges giving way to lakes and open ground.

Harry Baldwin, the fresh faced and energetic Head Gardener, is passionate about how history and horticulture interweave in this space he looks after. We walk along a row of great Chestnuts which used to be on either side of the drive leading to the mansion, still occupied by the 5th generation of the founding family members. “This here is a Japanese Oak, one of only a handful that survived the original seed germination when they were brought back from Japan. I found one of these hiding in a hedge in Kew when I worked there which everyone had forgotten about. They were the last seeds plant collector Richard Oldham sent back from Asia before he died of Dysentry.” “And this is a Meliosma beaniana, one of only three in the British Isles that was bought at auction in 1932 and

transported by lorry and then horse and cart here from North London.” Harry shows me a black and white photo of its parent tree in China, a photo that is part of an extensive well-preserved archive. “It looks like its parent don’t you think? We measure it regularly and the trunk expands about 1cm every year!” I have the feeling I am walking around an art gallery and museum, not just a garden. We come to a huge magnificent 30m tree just coming into leaf. “This is a Chinese Tulip tree, a Liriodendron. For years we tried to propagate

it and then we noticed a sapling growing up. It did it itself.

This one will be one of the 130 grafted or propagated trees we are planning to plant in the gardens to celebrate 130 years of horticulture here” He points to a Camelia as we wind our way back to the Italian garden. “This is the double pink flowering Camellia ‘Donation’. It was raised here in the 1930’s and now is sold all over the world!”

Our walk passes boggy ground, great hollows made from sand mining, ancient woodland and views of lakes. “We will be making an educational space down near the lake, with an eco-lodge and cafe. I would like to leave behind a legacy of protecting this collection, and we are digitising the whole of the archive”. We pass a stand of Redwoods, the 3 Magnolia Sisters, and every so often

a colour wheel of over 700 roses, with 150 different David Austin species.

Not normally a fan of sculpture in gardens, you must see the triangular, perspective bending sculpture called Round Dell by garden designer, Sophie Walker. It is perhaps the most thought provoking, unusual visual art installation I have ever seen in a garden.

Smokey chipolata & spring onion frittata

With a quick & easy tomato salad

Ingredients - Serves 4

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• 400g chipolata sausages (try our butchers S K Hutchings)

• 6 eggs

• 50g of bread, torn into small pieces

• 1 bunch springs onions, thinly sliced

• 50g applewood smoked, grated

• 2 garlic cloves, crushed

• 2 tbsp dried parsley, (Carla’s Seasoning)

• 2 tbsp paprika, (Carla’s Seasoning)

• Salt and pepper to season

To Serve – Quick Tomato Salad

For the Tomato Salad, roughly chop a selection of ‘Nutbourne’ tomatoes, and mix with 2 tbsp of ‘Loft Pickles’ chilli jelly.

Method

1. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan. Add the chipolatas and cook for 7-8 minutes until browned.

2. Meanwhile, crack the eggs into a large bowl and beat together, stir in the chunks of bread,

spring onions, garlic, parsley and paprika then lightly season.

3. Pre heat the grill to a medium heat.

4. Pour the egg mixture over the chipolatas and cook on the lowest heat for 6 -7 minutes or until the egg is completely set.

5. Sprinkle the frittata with the smoked cheddar and place the pan under the grill for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.

6. Slide onto a chopping board and cut into slices and serve with the tomato salad.

We often hold ourselves to very high standards when it comes to our diet andexercise routines.

If we’re not seeing what we want to see – or if we’re not seeing it as quickly as we would like –we often throw in the towel and quit.

We end up with a bit of an ‘all or nothing’ approach as our interest rises and falls depending on where we feel in relation to our goals.

A good strategy to help maintain your consistency is to remember to look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go.

Let’s say your ultimate goal is to be in a regular exercise routine. To you, that means 3 workouts a week. Your starting point was zero. Now, you’re getting 2 workouts most weeks and 3 sometimes. That is not failing – that is great progress!

How about if your goal is to get 10,000 steps a day. Your starting point was 2,000 and now you’re getting about 6,000… Again, that is not failing. You’re consistently able to do more than you could at the start. You are making progress!

Let’s say your nutrition goal is to cook three meals a day from scratch. Your starting point was cooking one meal a day yourself, and now you manage to cook two meals a day several times a week. Of course, there’s more work to do – but throwing the towel in and going back to your old habits is not going to help. You are closer to your goal than you were, so keep on making progress! So, when the going gets tough, remember to take a look back at how far you’ve come. Make sure you really allowyourselfto notice the changes. Be proud of yourself, even if you’re not where you’d like to be yet, and make sure to find positives in the achievements you’ve made.

Dynamic Movement Therapy

New wellbeing clinic in Pulborough

It has been established that regular exercise can have a beneficial and long lasting effect on both physical and mental wellbeing. Walking, running engaging in sports activities or using the gym can all lead to an improvement in mobility and general welfare. Such pursuits can also on occasion lead to injuries which is when Dynamic Movement Therapy (DMT) can assist.

Jodie Rushin spoke to Sussex Local about DMT and her work at Pulborough Wellbeing Clinic where with her two colleagues Hannah and Aaron a range of treatments is available to tackle injuries, aches and pains with a view to reestablishing mobility. No two people have the same bodies she explained and therefore treatment should be tailored to suit the patient which will include in depth investigation to identify the cause of the pain.

The objective will then be to restore previous pain-free mobility levels to those prior to the injury as quickly as possible. Treatments include osteopathic mobilisation, manipulation, medical acupuncture, dry needling and electrotherapy (ultrasound).

At present Jodie told us, the Clinic offers a treatment room and a rehabilitation room and she is eager to expand to offer additional facilities to clients. The décor and feel of the premises has been designed to create a welcoming atmosphere and she and her team are dedicated to continuing to support clients with aftercare and encouragement once the therapy has been concluded.

Being part of a small business collective is important to Jodie and her team who appreciate being part of a local supportive community.

Faster relief from pain

Natural techniques to help the body and mind

Faster and longer-lasting freedom from pain has been a goal for Caroline Kremer for most of her working life.

Caroline runs Pulborough Natural Health Clinic overlooking beautiful Pulborough Brooks and spoke to Sussex Local about the natural alternatives to conventional physiotherapy. For the major part of her career spanning almost 20 years, Caroline's clients have been mainly sports people seeking faster routes to repair injuries and relieve pain. This, she explained, led her to embrace techniques such as Bowen Therapy, Evans Alignment Therapy and Body Breathing. Now she says, “Athletes are no longer my main client base, as the NHS struggles under the fall out from COVID, more and more people are looking to find alternatives to mainstream complementary physical therapies and conventional medicine.”

Injured or in pain?

Caroline stressed the importance of giving time to listen to patients, to help them to learn about their own bodies and also be able to help themselves. Her sessions combine various techniques which are safe and relaxing and assess the full body rather than one particular issue. Inefficient postural habits can effect both physical and mental health. Bowen Therapy involves gentle moves to reduce stress in the musculoskeletal system while Body Breathing slows the breath pattern and can improve lung efficiency and release tension. Caroline explained that most sessions which last between 60 and 90 minutes will involve both therapies along with others which may be appropriate to the individual. “Come in for a shoulder issue and I’ll be treating your back, hamstrings and ankles as well - the symptomatic area of pain is rarely the cause.” She continues, “Most cases I see are concluded in 3-4 sessions.”

In the old days when the huge amorphous mass of London, more numerous than many a state, was only linked with coast by the railway, we feared for the future, but did not despair of it. The contrast between the meaningless new watering places, the suburban blotches and the ancient plough land, woodland, downland, was only the stronger.”

“Then came the change: London broke out like a bursting reservoir, flooding all the ways to the sea, swamping our history and our past, so that already we are hardly ourselves. Of a week-end the roads from north to south are like a city street. The new engines climb the Downs; they invade every corner. Writing in 1911, Belloc knew very well that the day might come “when the holy place shall perish and all the people of it,” yet he still hoped that the Sussex he knew as a child might still endure: its clear, peaceful, open downland, its indomitable people, and its continuity with ages past. By 1936, he had abandoned all hope. Belloc was getting old by this time and although still vigorously fighting for the causes he believed in, he retained little expectation of success. It is in this context that we should read his gloomy assessment –

In his poem, ‘Ha’nacker Mill,’ written on the eve of the First World War, Belloc had seen, almost as a premonition, the calamities that would befall both him personally and the country as a whole. He was visiting his mother in Slindon, and was appalled and shocked to see that Halnacker Windmill - a place he loved to walk to and sit by when a boy, had been blown down in a storm. It brought tears to his eyes and soon verses came flowing to his mind, which seem, with hindsight, to be an elegy for an England that was soon to vanish forever.

Smart motorways discontinued

Utilising the hard shoulder for safety on motorways

Road safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), welcomed the decision to scrap developing new smart motorways for safety reasons. RoSPA has campaigned for road safety for over a century and has highlighted the higher risk of collisions between stationary and moving vehicles on smart motorways compared to conventional ones, with road users calling for the return of the hard shoulder. Road Safety Manager at RoSPA, stated drivers want the hard shoulder and motorists need to feel safe on roads. RoSPA welcomes plans to shelve construction of smart motorways and hopes the money will be used to make motorways safer in other ways. Live lane breakdowns can happen where a hard shoulder is in place, and it is only a relative place of safety. Collisions and injury can still occur, which is why RoSPA will continue to educate motorists on what to do in an emergency on the road.

Smart motorway safety feature investments are ongoing like the retrofit of emergency refuge areas. RoSPA tips for encountering problems on the motorway: If a driver is on a motorway with a hard shoulder and needs to do an instant stop, use momentum to move over to the left lane and stop on the hard shoulder, turn on the hazards and ensure side lights are illuminated if it's dark. Be aware of changes in the car's handling, stop as far to the left as possible, get all occupants out of the car, and call for help using the nearest SOS phone. If the driver is on a smart motorway and can still drive, get to a service area or emergency refuge area. If they break down in a live lane, get the vehicle as far off the road as possible, turn on hazard lights, and get out of the vehicle on the left-hand side if it's safe, if not, stay in the car with the seatbelt on and call 999. www.rospa.com

Supporting young people with special educational needs

Many founders of charities or not-forprofit organisations decide to start their own organisation as a result of finding themselves unable to find the support they themselves need … Brian O’Hagan, Director of Reaching Families, is no exception.

In 2008, Brian had recently moved back to Worthing, after many years living in London, and had a child, James, who had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy at eight weeks old. Brian says, “When my son was poorly, I noticed that there was very little support for parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) so I began to explore what could be offered to support parents and families and in doing so, enhance the quality of life for children with SEND and their families.” Having spent 25 years working in the voluntary sector Brian decided to use his skills to launch an organisation that could achieve these objectives.

Working with over 3,000 West Sussex families

Brian explains that the aim of Reaching Families is to empower families of children with SEND in order for them to “maximise the support they receive from external agencies, have the knowledge and skills to care for a child or young person with SEND and to improve their resilience and emotional wellbeing through the support of other families in a similar situation.

“We do that through the delivery of a one-stop shop of services that includes an in-depth parent -carer guide, an online library of factsheets and animations, training workshops and courses, benefits advice and a befriending service for parents of children undergoing diagnosis.” The charity also has parent support groups based in Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Littlehampton, Worthing and online via zoom. With another group to be launched in Shoreham later this year.

Every year, Reaching Families supports over 3,000 families with a range of projects and services. Although the charity does receive referrals from health, schools and the local authority, referrals are not necessary for those seeking support from the organisation.

Delivering a range of information and training services

Reaching Families achieves its mission is to “empower, inform and support parents and families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in West Sussex,” through the delivery of a wide range of services. Possibly key amongst which is the charity’s parent-carer guide: “Making Sense of It All” –often referred to by users as the “parent-carer bible.” The guide is designed to enable and inform parents of children with SEND from birth through to adulthood, covering subjects including diagnosis, benefits and money matters, accessing support at school and from health & social care, and transition into adult life. It also contains a useful directory of local and national organisations, and an equally useful, and extensive, jargon-buster. The guide may be ordered free of charge as an eBook or in hardcopy format, subject to postage and packing, from the Guide Page of the charity’s website.

The charity also offers a series of fact sheets on childhood disabilities and rare syndromes, combining clinical information with local information on relevant projects, services and support for a particular condition. All information is localised to the needs of West Sussex families. Reaching families also produces information in the form of animated films – Animation Shorts – on a variety of subjects.

In 2021-22, 2,600 copies of the Making Sense of it All guide were downloaded/delivered to families, whilst over 10,000 factsheets were downloaded from the Reaching Families website.

Additionally, there is a range of Training Workshops for the parent-carer, again free of charge, and a “Making Sense of it All – Foundation Course”, introducing key issues parent-carers will face as their child grows and develops, which is available via Zoom or in person. Again, in 2021-22, 949 parents attended one of Reaching Families training workshops.

Offering “Face-2-Face Befriending” and Parent Support Groups

Parent-carers of recently diagnosed children also have an opportunity to benefit from befriending and emotional support, from an experienced and specially trained parent-carer, under the charity’s Face-2-Face Befriending project. Volunteer based, the charity’s befrienders undergo intensive training, are DBS checked and have ongoing support and supervision.

Monthly support groups - Umbrellas Parent Support groups are based in Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Littlehampton and Worthing and since Covid, a weekly online group meets on Zoom. These groups can be crucial for isolated parents, offering the opportunity to connect with other parents and signposting them to other relevant projects and services.

Amongst the information provided in Reaching Families’ Impact report for 2021 22, are figures illustrating the positive effect the charity has upon the lives of those who use its services. 90 percent of parent-carers reported improved knowledge in accessing support for their child, whilst 80 percent of parent-carers reported feeling more resilient in overcoming difficulties thanks to peer support. And 78 percent of parentcarers reported improved skills and selfconfidence in supporting their child as a result of attending a Reaching Families training course.

Reaching Families is funded from a variety of sources including the National Lottery, the local authority, the NHS and various charitable trusts and foundations. When I ask about Fundraising Events, Brian says that, “We very rarely put on fundraising events mainly because we are a small team and do not have the resources for managing these sorts of events.”

However, if you enjoy running, cycling, skydiving or putting on coffee mornings then Brian O’Hagan would be delighted to hear from you to discuss how you could raise much needed funds to sustain the work of the charity. “We have been very lucky to have had support from local people with fundraising, for example, a family in Littlehampton last Christmas raised money for us through a Christmas light show. Another lady ran a Zumbathon for us, many more have given donations.”

Exponential growth in demand for services since Covid

Now, more than ever charities are struggling to provide their much-needed services. As Brian says, “Our biggest challenge is meeting an exponential increase in demand for our service. Since the start of the covid pandemic demand has increased in some projects by over 200 percent. Finding the funds to increase resources to meet that demand has been difficult particularly in the current economic climate.”

Coronation celebrations!

At the start of May, the children of St. James’ spent time celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III. For all in the community, from the youngest to the oldest, the Coronation was a momentous occasion as none of us were alive for last one!

In worship, Canon John helped the children understand about the sacred and special ceremony that the Coronation is, explaining the items that will be seen and the significance of anointing the King with oil.

On the Friday before the Coronation, the children had a special celebratory day, working in their house teams to make bunting,

create their own crowns and complete a collage in the outline of King Charles III. With slight trepidation, chairs and tables were set up on the playground eat lunch ‘street party style’ and, although there was a shower during the set up, the sun shone and everyone was able to have lunch together. Our wonderful small school community then gathered together on the field and participate in a ‘Royal Sports Day’. The laughter and excitement from the field was just glorious – it was a wonderful day that the children will truly remember.

There was much excitement as the new Science timeline was revealed in the School Hall. This is an amazing resource, showing famous scientists

boating, archery, raft canoeing, climbing and problem-solving.

Our Yr 6 children spent a week at Bethany House, Hindhead taking part in a wide range of activities, such as canoeing, raft-building building, zip wire, abseiling, fencing and archery among others. These are such wonderful opportunities for the children to spend time together as a group away from home – they can really enjoy the independence these camps give them.

Our Yr 5 children had a weekend at Cobnor Activity Centre, sleeping in tents, where they took part in a variety of activities, including kayaking, keel-

The scripts for the Summer Production were given out to Yr 6 before half-term and they are hard at work learning their lines. They have worked so hard throughout the year to raise money for the Big Top, the arrival of which is always keenly anticipated. Tickets will go on sale for the show next month. We are so lucky to have the space to erect a circus tent and still leave plenty of room for the children to let off steam outside.

Mobile data & crime

I am delighted that since my last column our rural communities received good news for mobile data coverage. The Government has launched its latest strategy to deliver reliable 4G and 5G across the whole country, including here in West Sussex.

I know that some areas, particularly the vicinities of Petworth, Wisborough Green and Arundel, experience ‘blackspots’ in mobile data coverage and this news – which includes a £40 million 5G innovation fund to support businesses in adopting new technologies – will be welcome.

This new strategy was announced by the Government in addition to ongoing improvements, worth £100 million here in Sussex, to upgrade broadband connections to 60,000 households and businesses. Rural connectivity is not only crucial to local economic growth but is also increasingly

vital to the daily life of people who live in the most remote areas.

I know that, for many readers, tackling crime is at the top of the agenda. I share this view. That is why I was pleased with last week’s news that the Government has nationally recruited more than 20,000 new Police Officers – delivering on a commitment made in 2019.

That means that Sussex Police has recruited an additional 679 Police Officers since 2018 and the force now has more officers on our streets than 10 years ago. This positive news has meant that we’ve seen neighbourhood crime fall by 33% since 2019 a bigger reduction than the national average and an expansion of our local Rural Crime Team who are expert specialists in tackling the crime that impacts our more isolated countryside communities.

Long grass encourages different plant species to grow, helps bees and other insects to thrive and creates feeding opportunities for birds and small mammals. We are going to see how this works and possibly enlarge or change the plan, but this is the first stage.

If you do this for your own garden, i.e. letting all or part of your lawn grow during the summer, you will be creating a mini jungle for beetles and other small creatures to wander and where sparrows and goldfinches can come to feed on the seeds. The grasses will set seed, wildflowers can bloom and provide nectar, and the longer stems will create a sheltered microclimate. There is more information at www.rspb.org.uk/ get-involved

The Recreation Ground in Mill Road is in constant use by footballers, cricketers, croquet players and sometimes as a general recreation and picnic area for humans. Please don’t allow your dog to poo on this ground and keep your dog under control at all times. It has been suggested that a separate ‘Dog Park’ area is allocated to deter badly behaved owners from using the general Ground.
