Welcome... It’s February and many people will be buying cards and presents to give to loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Read about the origins of this annual event and who Saint Valentine was, in a light-hearted article ‘Is Romance Dead?’ by Cat Knowles-Fitton on page 17. Gay Richardson helps us sort out our wardrobes - the perfect job for a damp February Saturday - see our Style feature on page 24. Take advantage of the dry days to get out in the garden. Phocas lists the main tasks for February on page 27 along with his weather predictions. Our recipe this month on page 22 is a perfect Valentine’s Day dessert and is very simple to make too. We’re always pleased to publish items free of charge for local groups and charities. So, if you need help or want to spread the word about a good cause, please do get in touch. Anything non-commercial and of interest to our readers will be considered and if you can send a photograph as well, so much the better. Send your contributions to info@sussexlocal.net by 7th of the month for the following month’s magazine. We are also looking for photographs of local scenes for our covers. A small fee will be paid for any used. Have a great February, Kristina Words of Wit “Getting divorced just because you don't love a man is almost as silly as getting married just because you do.” ZSA ZSA GABOR

Win a trip for two to Canterbury including travel, hotel and meals
C
anterbury’s skyline is dominated by the stunning cathedral, the oldest in England with its origins dating back to 597 AD when St Augustine established his seat in Canterbury.
“Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?” The best known event in the Cathedral's history was the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170. When Becket was made Archbishop of Canterbury by King Henry II in 1162, he changed his allegiance from the King to the Pope and the Church. Henry had expected his full support, and there were many conflicts between them, the final one being Thomas Beckets' excommunication of the Archbishop of York and the Bishops of London and Salisbury. In 1170, King Henry had his son crowned as his heir by these and other bishops, usurping a long standing right of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Four knights, overheard the King's rage and took seriously his shout of "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" On 29 December 1170 Thomas Becket was persuaded to enter the Cathedral through the Cloisters and into the North West Transept. Vespers was in progress when the knights burst in, and found Thomas kneeling at the altar. According to Edward Grim, a monk who watched the murder, Thomas refused to absolve the Bishops and told the Knights that "for the name of Jesus and the protection of the Church, I am ready to embrace death." It was not long before he did so. The knights wielded their weapons and administered three mighty blows, the last one breaking off the tip of a sword. Three days after his death, there began a series of miracles attached to his martyrdom. These are depicted in the miracle windows of the Trinity Chapel. In 1173, Becket was canonized by Pope Alexander III. Pilgrims began to flock to Beckets' shrine in the Cathedral; a year later Henry, in sackcloth, walking barefoot, was among them. Canterbury has been a place of pilgrimage for thousands of people ever since as famously told by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

The new year so far Linsi Halsey shares her views on local and other events making the news so far this year.
T
he new year was marred when a cloud of acrid smoke rose over Ford Open Prison and its surroundings in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Another cloud (of suspicion) surrounded the inmates responsible for the riotous behaviour and criminal damage. On television is was titled “Breaking News”; I thought it was heart-breaking news. There are probably many people in our local community who would like but cannot afford to enjoy the facilities of a gym or sports club. They could justifiably be infuriated to see such facilities made available to people who may be arguably less deserving, being destroyed by mindless violence. In times of economic recession and austerity such as we are currently experiencing, the community who pay the price to provide such amenities and who are now likely to be further stretched financially to replace them and foot the bill for repairs are likely to be less than pleased.

Spare a thought also for the members of the emergency services directly affected by the events and called out on New Year’s Day – not a very good start to the year for them. Whilst I have your attention, I would like to say a big “thank you” to all who have emailed me and stopped me in the street to comment on the December article about the snow. It was heartening to hear from so many of you as to how much you liked the article. It also demonstrates the growing popularity of Sussex Local, which is nice to hear. As they say “good things come in small packages” As I am only 5ft tall this is an adage I strongly adhere to! Still on the subject of snow, I was feeling a bit hard done by over Christmas & New Year, as I was stranded at Heathrow Airport with thousands of others, on that dismal white weekend of the 18th

through the door the Maldives. On eventually getting back home, I was determined to put pen to paper (or mouse to email) and vent my anger about the whole badlyhandled fiasco t o t h e authorities at Heathrow. Once the dust had settled and my blood pressure had reduced from boiling point to a gentle simmer. I wrote as honestly, as I always endeavour to do. I did not exaggerate but merely stated the facts about our appalling ordeal. In time, I received a polite and fairly satisfactory apology, (albeit containing some less believable statements) attempting to justify their actions. There was also a mention of a “small gesture of goodwill” soon to be delivered to our home address. This they hoped would partially compensate for our poor experience and endorse t h e i r commitment to learn from their mistakes. What, I wondered, could this be? A few days later I received notification that a parcel was awaiting collection at our local Post Office. The heavy parcel turned out to be a beautiful and extravagant hamper from a well known London store full of quaffable luxuries to which I would not normally treat myself. It was lavishly wrapped in turquoise – my favourite colour, but painfully reminiscent of the azure Indian Ocean where I should have been swimming!
The aftermath of the Haiti earthquake a year ago So why am I telling you about this....? Well, sometime after the horror at Heathrow, I was watching a TV documentary on Haiti and the aftermath of the earthquake a year ago. It was horrendous - not horrendous like my experience at Heathrow, but truly horrendous. The people of Haiti lost their homes, their relatives and their livelihoods. They still live in makeshift tents and camps, with no hospitals, schools or infrastructure. Criminals escaped from prison as the buildings crumbled, to prey on the bereft and vulnerable community as law and order disintegrated.
SUSSEX LOCAL
12 News My nights of discomfort at Heathrow were nothing compared to the suffering of the islanders following the earthquake. I thought about my luxury hamper as I learned of one survivor who not only lost his wife and his home, but his leg as well and who received, from an Aid Agency, one tube of toothpaste – now THAT is appalling. How can I feel hard done by...? I don’t any more, that’s for sure. Like many of you, I set myself a few resolutions for 2011 – to eat less, move more and endeavour to be more relaxed and tolerant towards others. To this I will add to try to remember at least once every day, just how many things in life I have to be grateful for. If others, including people currently undergoing rehabilitation in open prisons such as Ford, could do the same, perhaps 2011 could end on a more positive note than it began.

Arundel Scouts Need Your Help The 22nd World Scout Jamboree will be held in Rinkaby, Sweden in July 2011. Two of our Arundel Scouts, Jack Lucas and Alex Harris, will be attending the Jamboree. The 1st Arundel Group was one of the first in the world and has served the young people of Arundel for over 100 years. If you, or members of your family, have been Scouts, then you will know what a fantastic organisation it is and how it benefits young people. Arundel has been very supportive of the Scouts and always been there when funds were needed. We need your help again now. We have to raise £4,000.00. The money we are raising will not only cover the costs for our two boys but will help to bring Scouts from third world countries to the Jamboree. To raise the money we are holding street collections, washing cars, running a quiz night and
BRIGHTON CONSORT RETURNS TO ARUNDEL Brighton’s foremost choir specialising in the performance of 16th and 17th century music returns to St Nicholas to present its c. Paul Barrow i n a u g u r a l programme under its new young director Katie Thomas on March 5th. Entitled “Bonjour, Monsieur Bouzignac” the programme will feature music by this rarely performed, 17th century master of the French Baroque. The performance will maintain the regional flavour by including music by other early French composers, and, as a contrast, Francis Poulenc’s “Four Motets for the Season of Lent”. Written in 1938-39, when Europe was in turmoil, these short pieces evoke the pain and suffering of Passiontide. “Bonjour, Monsieur Bouzignac” can be heard on Saturday 5th March (7.30 pm) at St Nicholas Church, London Road, Arundel BN18 9AT. Tickets £10 (£8 concessions) are available online from www.brightonconsort.org.uk or by telephoning 01273 833746 They will also be available on the door. The church has disabled access (for further help please ring 01273 304644).

The Adventure C o n t in u e s for Walberton Young People The New Year brings a new adventure for young people aged 8 to 10 years living in the Walberton area. On 12th January a new Cub Scout Pack opened its doors to 10 adventure seeking young people. The new Cub Scout Pack is the second satellite section of the 1st Barnham Scout Group. The boys and girls, aged between 8 and 10 years, who will be invested as Cub Scouts later this term enjoyed a packed evening. Eight year old Ben, attended the first meeting and said: “It was awesome, we played loads of games, the traffic light one was my favourite. I can’t wait to come back next week”. Jill Gladman from West Sussex Scouts County Team attended the launch evening. Jill said “Scouting offers the opportunity to take part in a fun and exciting programme of challenges. And we’re so pleased to be able to offer this to more young people in Walberton and the neighbouring community.” The group is seeking additional adult volunteers to support the running of the Cub Pack and a limited number of spaces are also available for children of the right age. Anyone interested should email stuart.thorne1@btinternet.com or call Stuart on 01243 545424 www.scouts.org.uk/join

Jack Edmonds Memorial Fund A St Wilfrid’s Hospice support group is being launched in Arundel. It will be known as ‘Jack Edmonds Memorial Fund’. The elegant Arundel Town Hall will host the official launch on Thursday 24th February 6.30pm – 8pm. After a glass of wine on arrival, Alison Moorey, the Chief Executive will officially welcome you to a short presentation on all aspects of the hospice’s work with an opportunity to have your questions answered. Jack Edmonds died in October 2010 and it is hardly an exaggeration to say that everyone in Arundel knew him, a smiling, gregarious man whose profile was always high in fundraising for parish events, Arundel Surgery, the school, Arundel Hospital, Arundel Museum to name but a few, and he was, using his persuasive charm, always nominated to promote the sale of tickets for such events. Most of the 300 letters and cards of
Charity & Community 15 condolence received by his wife, Jenny, comment on the lovely smile and charm of this true gentleman. It was the amazing care given to Jack by the St Wilfrid’s Hospice at Home Team that made it possible for Jack to die with dignity at home amidst the comings and goings of his family and friends, at the centre of which he was always happiest. As testimony to his popularity, the parish church of St Nicholas was packed for his funeral, and donations to the hospice amounted to £3600. His wife, Jenny, has now pledged to work to support the hospice. JACK’S JAZZ NIGHT with George’s Regis Band will be on Thursday 10th March in St Mary’s Hall, London Road, Arundel. Tickets £15.00. All proceeds to the Hospice. Jack previously organised Jazz Nights for various charities, so this will be a fun-packed fundraiser and a tribute to him. Enquiries may be directed to Jenny Edmonds on 01903 884882

1 oz butter 2 eggs, beaten 1 oz soft brown sugar Juice of ½ lemon 3 conference pears, peeled and halved 6 oz self-raising flour 4 oz margarine 4 oz caster sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder
