March 4 2011 12 Cover Photo Halnaker Windmill by Roger Wilmshurst www.nature-pictures.co.uk.

Welcome... The results of our survey last November indicated that many Sussex Local readers are wildlife lovers. So, we are pleased to be able to include an interview with Dr Tony Whitbread, Chief Executive of the Sussex Wildlife Trust in this month’s issue. Read what Dr Whitbread has to say about the recent government proposals to sell off Britain’s woodlands and other wildlife related topics starting on page 17. By the way, many congratulations to Beverley Mallett who was the winner of £150 in our reader survey prize draw! Ten other lucky readers also won £25 each. March is one of my favourite months, the weather tends to brighten up and the first spring flowers make an appearance. Phocas has “Spring fever” and is keen to get you working hard out in the garden see page 26. We’ve also got the lowdown on this season’s trends from Gay our style guru, see page 24. Gay is also looking forward to styling our January Style Makeover winner Doreen Harbour from Ashington. Look out for Doreen who will be appearing ‘before’ and ‘after’ in next month’s magazine. There’s plenty of events in our area this month too so keep our What’s On guide to hand, see pages 4 - 7. Enjoy March, Kristina Words of Wit “Two wrongs don’t make a right, but they make a good excuse.” PHYCHIATRIST THOMAS SZASZ

MP registers formal objection to quarry in National Park Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert has registered his formal objection to the Barlavington Estate’s application to quarry sand on Horncroft Common in the new South Downs National Park. In a letter to West Sussex County Council Mr Herbert writes that, as well as expressing his own opinion, he felt a duty to “draw attention to the many letters I have received from constituents in the many villages affected, and their parish councils, that I represent and that are firmly opposed to the Barlavington Estate’s plans.” It has also emerged that Jim Redwood, Head of Planning at the South Downs National Park Authority, has recommended to the newly formed SDNPA Planning Committee that it should object to the plans. The scheme's promoters have submitted the application to the County Council ahead of 1 April when the Park Authority will assume responsibility for planning decisions.

The proposal for the development is to create the facilities, plant and quarry required to extract 1.5 million tonnes of sand over the next 20 years. Local people fear that the development will not only damage an area located within the South Downs National Park, but would increase noise and traffic. It is believed that there would be up to 100 vehicle movements a day from the site, most of them heavy lorries. Last month, Nick Herbert handed over a petition signed by over 640 parishioners and visitors - to the County Council against the proposed quarry. Mr Herbert commented: “There is a strong case against this quarry and now we know that the National Park's planning officers are recommending that the application is turned down. I hope that West Sussex County Council will note this and reject the proposal.”

Catherine Ward tells us about her new business organising childrens’ parties A passion for working with children plus a flair for entertainment runs through the veins of young entrepreneur Catherine Ward. Not surprising, considering she has a degree in music, plays and teaches the flute, treads the boards with a local theatre group and is an experienced guide leader! So when it came to deciding what to do after leaving university, and following positions in the childrens events and entertainment field including with the Arundel Wildfowl Trust - there was no question that she wanted to use her abilities and passions to start her own company. Catherine decided to buy a franchise of Emporium Childrens Parties, which has been established for twelve years. Her region stretches from Chichester to Worthing, including all the areas covered by Sussex Local. Catherine is excited at the prospect of working for herself but with the experience and support of the main company. So what’s on offer? “The difference with us is that we provide full entertainment throughout the party” says Catherine. “Unlike some other organisers, our entertainers come directly to your home or venue,

and we provide two entertainers, plus props and prizes to all our parties. We also feature over fifty different themes, from Disco to Hannah Montana, Superhero and Pirates. We always work with our customers to create the ideal party for the child. In fact we go an extra mile to make the children smile” she laughs. It’s hard work but Catherine is upbeat and says “I love to have fun and I love to be busy so with this business I have found my niche!” Emporium Childrens’ Parties 01903 250 660 66 0

Tree Surgery Secrets There are some areas of gardening which are better left to an expert - and tree-felling and pruning definitely falls in this category, says Steve Pickett of Ashwood Tree Surgery. Before making recommendations, a qualified tree surgeon will consider the health of the tree and what is best for it. Most tree surgeons attempt to recycle and convert any waste into useful products. To be certain your work is carried out to the highest professional standard, your should check that your arborist is NPTC qualified (National Proficiency Tests Council) and either academically or professionally trained, or both. You should also ensure that they are fully conversant with health and safety procedures. Apart from standard tree work, many firms offer other garden and ground maintenance jobs, including hedge care and landscaping. Ashwood Tree Surgery 01903 723 710

28 Motoring

Car of the future Volkswagen unveils the XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle, capable of 313 MPG!

T

he new Volkswagen XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle (SEV) has been unveiled at the Qatar Motor Show. Pioneering construction techniques, an advanced plug-in hybrid drivetrain and innovative packaging all play a part in allowing the XL1 to return 313 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 24 g/km of CO2 to set a new benchmark for vehicle efficiency. Powering the XL1 is a compact 800 cc TDI twocylinder common rail diesel engine developing 48 PS. It’s linked to an electric motor producing 27 PS, resulting in a total of 75 PS – a modest output yet more than enough when the low kerb weight (795 kg) of the vehicle is taken into account. The TDI engine is linked to an electric motor and a seven-speed DSG gearbox with an automatic clutch mounted between each unit. The electric motor can either work independently of the TDI engine or in tandem when accelerating. In pure electric mode the XL1 can travel up to 35 km before the diesel engine cuts in. Accelerating from rest to 62 mph can be achieved in 11.9 seconds; the electronically limited top speed is 99 mph. Although the XL1 is still very much a concept, its unveiling marks the next step towards the birth of a new class of Super Efficient Vehicles For now though Vokswagen offers the Polo with free insurance, low monthly payments and free servicing. From now until 31 March, all Polos, apart from GTI and BlueMotion models, are available with Free Insurance and £500 off, meaning the Polo S 1.2litre 60 PS three-door model costs just £9,495. With Volkswagen Finance’s popular Solutions PCP package, this means monthly payments of £99 per month – including up to three years’ free servicing (7.9 per cent representative APR). This offer applies to all Polo models purchased from stock through a Volkswagen UK Retailer and registered before 31 March The latest and fifth generation Polo was launched in October 2009. Shortly afterwards it was named European Car of the Year 2010, and in April, added the accolade of World Car of the Year 2010 to its name. Volkswagen UK sold 45,282 Polos last year, making 2010 the car’s best-selling year since 2003.

Volkswagen has announced details and pricing for a new entry-level Golf model which offers added value and extra equipment as standard. The Golf Twist is available to order at participating Retailers now with prices starting at £12,995 RRP on the road. The new entry-level model represents exceptional value for money with more than £700 of additional equipment over the Golf S on which it is based. The Twist adds 16-inch ‘Atlanta’ alloy wheels, RCD 310 radio system with MDI multimedia connectivity and a front centre armrest to the comprehensive list of standard equipment. As with all models in the Golf range, the Twist is fitted with a host of safety features including ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and seven airbags. The new Golf Twist costs £12,995 RRP on the road with a £585 premium for the five-door model. The previous entry-level Golf, the S with the same 1.4litre engine, costs £14,880. Volkswagen is also offering further ways to save money and added peace of mind on the Golf Twist, with competitive retail and finance offers. The Golf Twist is offered through Volkswagen Solutions and is eligible for the existing finance offer available on all Golf models, with 7.9 per cent APR typical. Dining Out 29

By George! Kris Thomas visits the George & Dragon Inn, Burpham

O

n a wet Sunday lunchtime I feel the best thing to do is head to a warm and welcoming country pub. Greeted by the sweet smell from the log burning fire, the convivial atmosphere inside was in stark contrast to the quiet of the pretty Saxon hamlet of Burpham. Always a well-liked venue with both locals and visitors from further afield, the George & Dragon has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years since the current owners, Michael and Sara Cheney took over in November 2007. There are two distinct dining areas, the cosy pub and the restaurant with tables laid with thick linen and fresh flowers. We sat in the large bay window in the restaurant looking out to the church with our little boy in a highchair. Happily the George and Dragon is a family-friendly pub and our toddler was made very welcome. From Monday to Saturday a specials board with rustic dishes accompanies the a la carte menu which is frequently updated. Head chef Jamie Mosaheb told us that his aim is to offer dishes you wouldn’t normally cook at home along with pub classics of the highest quality. 95% of the food is made from scratch on site by Jamie and his team using local produce, they even butcher their own meat. As well as; pork and ale pie, local seabass, beer battered fish and chips and blue cheese and hallumi risotto, the Sunday menu includes roasts which was what we chose. My aged sirloin of beef was superb and the goose-fat roast potatoes were among the best I have ever tasted. Served with Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese and crisp seasonal vegetables plus a heavenly, rich gravy with an intense flavour and the merest hint of sweetness to complement the juicy beef. The G&D wine menu is supplied by Berry Bros. & Rudd, Britain’s oldest wine and spirit merchant. We picked the ‘Good Ordinary’ Claret which was mid-price on the wine list at around £20 and tasted like a far more expensive Bordeaux. Although the portions were very generous we couldn’t resist desserts which included sherry and raspberry trifle, rich chocolate mousse and chocolate orange cheesecake. My husband chose the white wine poached pear served with warm rice pudding. An inspired combination of the delicate fruit and the sweet and creamy rice pud. Comfort food with elegance! I chose a white

chocolate praline served with toffee and walnut clusters and a berry sauce. The slightly sharp red berry sauce worked well with the fudge-like praline and the crunchy walnuts. We couldn’t manage the home-made choc-chip cookies served with our coffee but took them away to enjoy back in the office on Monday!

Two course Sunday lunch with wine approximately £30 per person. Two course child’s menu £6.95. Booking in advance is advisable. Contact 01903 883131 or visit www.gerogeanddragoninnburpham.com
