So, a brand new year arrives! Do you feel full of vim and ready to face 2011? If not, a “Style Makeover” could be just what you need. See page 22 for your chance to win one in our January competition. You may also be inspired by our New Year, New You feature with ideas to improve your health, wealth and home, see page 14. Gardening is a great form of exercise and Phocas has some tasks to keep you warm outside, see page 25. Meanwhile, if you are already weary of new year resolutions, here are some amusing quotations to pass on to all those self-satisfied giver-uppers!

He who breaks a resolution is a weakling; He who makes one is a fool. F.M. Knowles I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the year's. Henry Moore One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this: To rise above the little things. John Burroughs May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions. Joey Adams New Year's Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time. James Agate A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. Author Unknown Never tell your resolution beforehand, or it's twice as onerous a duty. John Selden All the best for 2011,

Kristina

Let’s talk Chimneys... So, following on from Santa’s annual visit, let‘s talk chimneys! I think it’s fair to say that until the 1960’s most properties were constructed with chimney stacks, and central heating systems were not common in your average home. Space and water heating was typically provided by the ‘ideal’ solid fuel stove in the kitchen. I remember it well from my youth! There were open fires in the other principal rooms, draughty windows where the glass froze on the inside in the winter and usually no insulation in the roof voids. Let’s describe what Santa sees on his journey over the roof tops to a typical 1930’s style property……. The clay chimney pots are set into cement flaunchings and over sailing brickwork. He carefully negotiates around the TV arial. He may notice that the chimney stack is usually higher than the surrounding roof structure and its height does not exceed four and a half times its width to ensure stability. He enters the chimney and commences his downward journey. He passes at least one, and possibly two damp proof courses to prevent water entering the roof voids. If there is more than one flue within the chimney he may notice that it is not straight. There will be a

bend of between 45 and 60 degrees, and he will struggle with his sack of goodies. The fireback at ground level may be made of either concrete or fireclay behind which there will be vermiculite filling to radiate heat. If Santa is really observant, he may also notice that it is caulked with asbestos rope where it abuts the fire surround. Santa tumbles in to the hearth noting that there is no combustible material within 500 mm of the fire basket. Good old Santa… he has made it for another year! He drops his sack, grabs a mince pie, knocks back a couple of Sherries and quietly tip-toes to the front door….. after all who wants to climb back up to the roof via a dirty old chimney on Christmas Eve? A very Happy New Year to you all……Chris Ennis

Blinds - add the perfect finishing touch Once the Christmas and New Year celebrations have ended you may be planning to move house or to update or extend your present home. You may not be aware that there is a huge range of specialist blinds which can provide an attractive finishing touch to your project. Blinds will give a light and spacious feel to a living room. They offer a practical solution in kitchens and bathrooms with special “perfect fit” or “intu blinds” for doors. Bedrooms can suit stylish string vertical blinds or blackout blinds for the light sensitive on bright summer mornings. Roman blinds offer an alternative soft fabric style of blind and are available in a full range of curtain fabrics to co-ordinate with any colour scheme. They are operated on a Vantage Plus track system which provides an accurate and trouble free raise and lower system without the need to tie off cords. Conservatories can add another room to your property but can be too hot in Summer and too cold in Winter. Specialist conservatory blinds can solve these temperature problems, provide privacy and will make your conservatory useable all the year round. Shutters offer a stylish alternative window covering, providing solar control, privacy and security. Canopies and awnings can enhance the exterior look of a property as well as providing excellent solar protection. At the same time they provide a pleasant shaded area for sitting or eating outside.

Direct Blinds provide a full range of vertical, metal and wooden venetian, roller, pleated and Roman blinds as well as wooden shutters, canopies and awnings throughout the areas covered by Sussex Local. For further assistance please telephone 01903 823803 or visit the website at www.directblindsworthing.com .

16 New Year - New Health

Raise your heart rate and your spirits too! After the celebrations of New Year’s Eve are over, it’s that time of year when many of us think about our diet and exercise habits. Many people are so daunted by the thought of joining a gym that it puts them off the whole idea of exercise altogether. But exercising, which we all know is crucial to good health, is not all about gyms and classes. There are many simple exercises you can do in the comfort of your own lounge or garden. So to get your circulation going, increase your energy levels and give you the feel good factor of moving your body and working up a sweat, here is a 25 minute exercise plan kindly supplied by fitness expert and personal trainer Susie Viner (right in photo). Warm up – March on the spot for 1-2 mins slowly swinging the arms. Still marching punch the arms forwards clenching the fists. Set feet facing forward between hip and shoulder width apart then slowly go down into a half ‘Squat’ position and push back up to upright (keep a slight bend in the knees), repeat 5 times then increase the depth of the ‘Squat’ and repeat a further 5 times. March on the spot or increase pace to a jog for another minute. Have a drink of water then move on to: 1 – Squats Standing with feet around hip width and toes slightly turned out. Without leaning forwards lower yourself in to the ‘Squat’ position, pushing your bottom back as if to sit on a chair. Keep chest lifted and stomach pulled in. Slowly rise back up push through your heels. Repeat for 40 seconds. 2 – Push ups. Start on hands and knees, taking hands out wide in line with your chest. Either stay on your knees or come up on to your toes making sure back is straight and stomach pulled in. Lower chest down as far as you can keeping elbows wide then push back up to the starting position. Repeat for 40 seconds. 3 – Front Plank. Lie on the floor, place forearms on the floor close to your body with elbows in line with shoulders. Either come up on to your knees or challenge yourself with the slightly harder option of coming up onto your toes. The main objective with the ‘Plank’ is to keep your head in line with your back and hips and keep the back as straight as possible. Hold this position for 20 seconds. Try to concentrate on breathing as you hold the position and try not to hold your breath! 4 – Mountain climbers. Start in ‘Push Up’ position with arms straight and hands flat on the floor. Keep your back straight and stomach pulled in. Bring one foot at a time up towards the heel of your hand

then push in back to the start position and repeat on the other side. Once you’ve got the hang of it increase the speed! Continue for 40 seconds 5 – Reverse Lunges Standing with feet hip width apart, take a big step back with one leg, toes of that foot on the floor. Maintain your balance and slowly drop the back knee down towards the floor. Push back up and return leg to the start position then repeat on the other side. Keep back straight, stomach pulled in, knees in line with your toes and weight distributed evenly through your feet. Repeat for 40 seconds. 6 – Back bridge. Lie on the floor with feet flat on the floor and arms by your side, palms facing up. Lift your bottom off the floor driving your hips upwards and hold. Concentrate on your breathing and draw your stomach muscles in. Hold for 30 seconds 7 – Star jumps. Good old Star Jumps raise the heart rate and help with co-ordination. Start with feet hip width apart, then jump both feet out wide bring your arms out to the side as you jump, return to the start position and repeat for 40 seconds. Repeat from the Squats once more and then finish with a march on the spot with shoulder rotation and stretch out the major muscles. Take care with any exercises you are not familiar with and go at your own pace. Have fun and drink plenty of water during and after exercise.

18 New Year - New Money

Shed some light on your finances in 2011 The New Year is always a great time to take stock of things with a view to making a fresh start. After the outlay of Christmas, financial matters will be high on the list for many people and following the economic difficulties of the last couple of years, revisiting and assessing your financial priorities is perhaps even more important than ever. Top Tips 1. Spend a little time working out your likely budget for the next 12 months. Will your income exceed likely expenses? 2. What does your personal balance sheet look like? What assets/debts do you have? 3. Review any investments you have. Are they working hard for you? 4. R e v i e w your personal insurance arrangements? If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family be able to cope financially? 5. What are your plans for retirement? Have you reviewed your pension plans recently? Will you have enough income in retirement? 6. Review your Will and any Powers of Attorney to ensure they still satisfy your needs. 7. Ensure you are using all available tax reliefs

and allowances. 8. If any of the above points give cause for concern, consider talking them through with an independent expert. Everybody’s financial priorities are different but all can benefit from an impartial assessment showing which parts of your finances are strong and which require development. See our special offer for Sussex Local readers and save £50.
