So, a brand new year arrives! Do you feel full of vim and ready to face 2011? If not, a “Style Makeover” could be just what you need. See page 22 for your chance to win one in our January competition. You may also be inspired by our New Year, New You feature with ideas to improve your health, wealth and home, see page 14. Gardening is a great form of exercise and Phocas has some tasks to keep you warm outside, see page 25. Meanwhile, if you are already weary of new year resolutions, here are some amusing quotations to pass on to all those self-satisfied giver-uppers!
He who breaks a resolution is a weakling; He who makes one is a fool. F.M. Knowles I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the year's. Henry Moore One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this: To rise above the little things. John Burroughs May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions. Joey Adams New Year's Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time. James Agate A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. Author Unknown Never tell your resolution beforehand, or it's twice as onerous a duty. John Selden All the best for 2011,
Kristina

Gardening 9
The Garden Hedge Monthly home & garden issues with Louisa Bell of City & Country Landscapes Many gardens have unsuitable hedges which are usually inherited with the house and you’re not quite sure what to do with them. They’re too big, and too important to nesting birds, to dig out. They could also be ecologically valuable. We visited a client last week whose entire hedge is listed with a preservation order. The old hedgerow system of boundary definition goes back hundreds of years and some hedges will be much older than your house – probably part of some ancient fiefdom. You can cut these on a regular basis, which helps generate new growth and keeps the hedge open to light and air. Most hedges can be cut back very hard too – better in the autumn or at least after the birds have left home. Always employ a decent tree surgeon or properly qualified landscaper. Cutting a hedge is a dangerous occupation. This summer I saw a lady up a ladder wielding a hedge trimmer whilst her husband held the cable away from the saw. We recently replaced an enormous hedge in Nutbourne which had died with a new mature hedge of white flowering Prunus lusitanica. It does look wonderful. If, despite regular pruning, your hedge remains untidy it can be used as a host to other lovely plants. The hedgerows in nature are hosts to honeysuckle and wild clematis, dog-roses and hardy fuschias. Your own hedge can be clothed with a more refined mixture of the same plants. The small species clematis – viticella – will add autumn colour, covering the hedge in late summer. An early-flowering clematis will cover the hedge in Spring. A large hedge can cope with a Clematis montana and the white flowers look great against an evergreen background. Roses too will twine throughout this new frame. I have used the beautiful banksian roses, their double pale lemon blooms have scrambled over and
through a twenty metre hedge. They’re thornless too, so don’t rip your arms when you prune. If you have a really long hedge then try the wonderful thug, Rosa filipes ‘kiftsgate’. This is a monster rose that will grow to eighty feet, covered in white blooms and then followed with red hips in the autumn. If you do live near the countryside you’ll be visited by flocks of fieldfares in the winter to eat the berries; a fabulous sight in cold weather. For our honeysuckle replacement, I have the evergreen Graham Thomas, but all honeysuckles will enjoy growing through a hedge as a host. Your hedge will be a hungry companion, taking moisture and nutrients from the soil, so plant your climbers a little way from the hedge itself and dig a really good sized hole. Fill this with decent compost, or mix the soil with some well-rotted organic matter. Water in your new plant well at first and keep angling any new growth towards the hedge, either wrapped around canes or pegged along the ground until it can be wound in. Once the climber gets into the hedge, there’s little you can do except watch it grow. When the hedge is pruned, the climber will get pruned too so be aware of the flowering season of your climbers and don’t prune at the wrong time, losing all your rose-buds or clematis flowers. Well, we enter a new year with a little trepidation about the weather for the next couple of months. The thermals have already been well used this year and we’re getting used to the sight of each other in long johns. It’s not a good look. We are still busy looking at gardens for the new year and if you’d like some ideas for your own fiefdom then call to talk it through. Get permission from the Lord of the Manor first. In the meantime, I hope you have a very happy New Year.

THAKEHAM HELPS SAVE THE PLANET
– AND A POTENTIAL £60,000! Imagine, if you can, 38 massive hot air balloons floating in the sky above the small village of Thakeham in West Sussex. That image represents the huge amount of CO2 saved by the community in the first phase of their Greening Thakeham campaign.
This first phase of Greening Thakeham encouraged households to help reduce CO2 emissions – and other waste – by undertaking a number of easily achievable tasks, such as turning down the thermostat one degree, turning off standby’s or using low-energy bulbs. The households who achieved five such challenges then displayed the Greening Thakeham logo in their windows, so that the annual CO2, water and money savings made by the community could be calculated. An amazing 38.7 tonnes of CO2 were saved, along with 80,955 litres of water, not to mention total financial savings of over £7,500. Had every single household achieved the challenges (and being the summer holidays it is not surprising that not
everyone did), the s a vi n g s would have been enormous : over 300,000 tonnes of CO2; 640,000 litres of water; and around £60,000. All in a small, rural village. The Greening Thakeham committee are now planning Phase Two of the campaign, which will be a more ambitious initiative for long term energy saving in the village. Residents of Thakeham are being encouraged to suggest ideas and to get involved in what promises to be a really exciting project. Well done Thakeham and here’s to Phase Two! For further information about Greening Thakeham or to suggest further projects please contact: Lucy McDowell at greeningthakeham@yahoo.co.uk

Blinds - add the perfect finishing touch Once the Christmas and New Year celebrations have ended you may be planning to move house or to update or extend your present home. You may not be aware that there is a huge range of specialist blinds which can provide an attractive finishing touch to your project. Blinds will give a light and spacious feel to a living room. They offer a practical solution in kitchens and bathrooms with special “perfect fit” or “intu blinds” for doors. Bedrooms can suit stylish string vertical blinds or blackout blinds for the light sensitive on bright summer mornings. Roman blinds offer an alternative soft fabric style of blind and are available in a full range of curtain fabrics to co-ordinate with any colour scheme. They are operated on a Vantage Plus track system which provides an accurate and trouble free raise and lower system without the need to tie off cords. Specialist conservatory blinds can solve these temperature problems, provide privacy and will make your conservatory useable all the year round. Shutters offer a stylish alternative window covering, providing solar control, privacy and security. Canopies and awnings can enhance the exterior look of a property as well as providing excellent solar protection. At the same time they provide a pleasant shaded area for sitting or eating outside.

Having tried a home-whitening kit with little success, I was dubious about how well the “Diamond” treatment would work but One Stop Medi Spa owner Sandra assured me that the treatment was proven to significantly lighten even the most stained teeth. Sandra explained that stains on teeth are caused by everyday activities such as drinking coffee, red wine, smoking or consuming any products that permeate the pores of your teeth and cause discolouration. Older stains are found deep within the enamel and inside the tooth itself and are therefore difficult to remove. She explained that most of the home products and 15 minute “professional cleaning” treatments will not be able to effectively remove years of staining. The diamond whitening treatment uses a specially formulated peroxide gel which is accelerated by use of a cold-light whitening lamp directed at the teeth. Three 20 minute treatments are carried out and improvements of between 6 and 10 shades on the ‘Whitening Shade Guide’ can be expected. The treatment is painless and Sandra put on some music to relieve the boredom as I lay still so that the special blue light remained pointing at my teeth. Sandra stayed close by the whole time and constantly monitored the process and asked me if I was ok (not that I could really respond!). At the end of the treatment when I looked in the mirror I was genuinely delighted with the results. My teeth were 8 shades lighter which was a noticeable improvement but they didn’t look odd or strangely “dazzling”, just the look I was hoping for! There is also an aftercare kit to use at home for just 10-15 minutes a day whenever you have time which will help keep your smile white and prevent new stains from forming. Sandra also advised me to stay off the red wine which I managed for at least two days! By Kris Thomas.

Shed some light on your finances in 2011 The New Year is always a great time to take stock of things with a view to making a fresh start. After the outlay of Christmas, financial matters will be high on the list for many people and following the economic difficulties of the last couple of years, revisiting and assessing your financial priorities is perhaps even more important than ever. Top Tips 1. Spend a little time working out your likely budget for the next 12 months. Will your income exceed likely expenses? 2. What does your personal balance sheet look like? What assets/debts do you have? 3. Review any investments you have. Are they working hard for you? 4. R e v i e w your personal insurance arrangements? If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family be able to cope financially? 5. What are your plans for retirement? Have you reviewed your pension plans recently? Will you have enough income in retirement? 6. Review your Will and any Powers of Attorney to ensure they still satisfy your needs. 7. Ensure you are using all available tax reliefs and allowances. 8. If any of the above points give cause for concern, consider talking them through with an independent expert. Everybody’s financial priorities are different but all can benefit from an impartial assessment showing which parts of your finances are strong and which require development. See our special offer for Sussex Local readers and save £50.
