April 4 2011 12 Cover Photo Spring bluebells kindly supplied by www.sussexphotos.co.uk.

Welcome... With the Royal Wedding, Easter and Mother’s Day this month, there’s plenty of opportunity to get together and enjoy time with friends and family. If you’re looking for something to do with the children or on one of the bank holidays, look no further than our extra large What’s On guide, see pages 4 - 8. All we need now is some good weather, here’s hoping! Also this month, on page 17, Veronica Cowan visits the beautiful estate of West Dean near Chichester and meets the head gardener. Talking of gardens, the saintly Phocas has plenty of gardening tasks to occupy your April bank holidays, (page 27). It really is a lovely time of year to get out in the fresh air and I hope our cheerful cover photo inspires you to do just that. Why not join a group walk? See page 12 for a selection of walks in our area. Finally, don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 2nd April. Here’s a little poem for all our lovely mums, enjoy your official ‘day off’! Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn, Hundreds of bees in the purple clover, Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn, But only one mother the wide world over. - George Cooper See you next month, Kristina Words of Wit “If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?” MILTON BERLE

First Aid for Roofs Mossy banks and mossy boughs may be picturesque, but moss or lichen stubbornly clinging to roof tiles is a different matter entirely. Moss, lichen and algae are among the earliest of life forms and have remained virtually unchanged over the years. The general demise in heavy industry and the resulting improvement in the environment have led to an increase in airborne spores and the milder weather enables these simple plants to thrive. In addition, acid rain and other pollutants combine to wreak havoc on our roofs. If your roof is over 25 years old and beginning to look jaded, Sussex Moss Removal can provide a lasting and affordable solution. The whole process is extremely thorough from the original survey, careful cleaning and application of a fungicidal drench and preparation of the roof for the application of the protective coating (with a choice of colours) through to the final inspection with the customer. The company has been operating for 10 years and employs no salesmen, relying instead on good honest

Property 9 workmanship and high standards to promote its growth. Commendations such as "..the whole process has significantly improved the appearance of the house” (Mr. H. Pulborough) and "The roof looks like new “ (Mrs. B. West Chiltington) support these principles. Andrew Herrington, who runs the company, believes that the varied types of roof in West Sussex motivate his work team. Andrew is particularly proud of his restoration of BBC Changing Rooms presenter Oliver Heath's roof on his "Eco House" in Hove last Summer. The project was recently featured in the Evening Argus and Oliver Heath was delighted with the work. As protection processes and products continue to improve, Sussex Moss Removal is confident enough to provide a 10 year guarantee for all their work. So if your roof is in need of a “facelift”, now may be the time to contact them, particularly as mentioning their advertisement in Sussex Local will entitle you to a 10% discount.

The Swan Inn Fittleworth A new lease of life for an old favourite In the heart of a small West Sussex village is an old coaching inn dating from 1382 which has been a resting place for many artists drawn to the beauty of the nearby countryside. Many of these artists, some famous, have contributed a picture in return for food and lodging and some of these are displayed in the bar. Many people will recognise this as The Swan Inn, a charming 14th century coaching inn in the heart of Fittleworth with its distinctive sign straddling the road outside. What is not so well known is that this delightful hostelry has just undergone a £250,000 refurbishment which will make it one of the most appealing and prestigious bar/restaurants in the area of which the village can be justifiably proud. The White family (the award winning team behind Whites Bar & Kitchen in Steyning) who are the new owners have transformed the bar and restaurant with an imaginative use of colours and fabrics to reflect the rich tapestry of the inn's historic past. Shades of amber, white pepper, sage green and taupe will offset the old exposed beams and wood panelling. Furnishings in luxurious wool, butter-soft leather chairs with sheepskin throws together with vintage style lighting will create a captivating atmosphere which visitors will not want to leave. The Inn has long played host to the local community and the hundreds of walkers who explore the surrounding countryside. The Whites aim to continue this tradition so that the Swan maintains its position as a centre for local people to meet and a haven for walkers (and their dogs) and visitors alike. The lovely lawned garden is perfect for families with children and will be irresistible during the warm spring and summer days. If it is simply a refreshing drink that is called for there are some unique options on offer. These include cocktails containing ramblers’ favourites such as elderflower, honey, spices and summer berries as well as local wines and ales. If you are looking for more substantial nourishment, the new menu, with many dishes cooked in a wood burning oven, aims to please even hardened ‘foodies’. Whether served in the restaurant or the bar, the flavoursome, locally-sourced rustic food comes in generous portions. The menu is regularly varied and the Whites are confident that the food at the Swan will soon get a following and will be as popular as the food at their Steyning establishment.

George White and the Chef

The refurbishment of the bar and restaurant is now complete so do stop by to see the changes for yourself. The improvements continue with the upgrading of the 15 bedrooms which will be completed in stages by June. This ambitious project has been overseen by George White who has gained considerable experience at the White Horse Inn in Steyning where he became licensee after graduating from university. His drive and flair as well as his business acumen make him an obvious candidate to complete the transformation of this historic Inn into a landmark pub and hotel for the village of Fittleworth and surrounding area. Speaking just prior to the re-opening about the extensive work undertaken at the Swan, George said, “We are very excited about re-opening the Swan and hope to see lots of locals over the next few weeks” he continued, “we really hope people will like the changes we’ve made and look forward to hearing what people think about the new menu” To reserve a table please call 01798 865429 and for more information see www.swaninnhotel.co.uk.

Win a trip for two to Canterbury including travel, hotel and meals

C

anterbury’s skyline is dominated by the stunning cathedral, the oldest in England with its origins dating back to 597 AD when St Augustine established his seat in Canterbury.

“Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?” The best known event in the Cathedral's history was the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170. When Becket was made Archbishop of Canterbury by King Henry II in 1162, he changed his allegiance from the King to the Pope and the Church. Henry had expected his full support, and there were many conflicts between them, the final one being Thomas Beckets' excommunication of the Archbishop of York and the Bishops of London and Salisbury. In 1170, King Henry had his son crowned as his heir by these and other bishops, usurping a long standing right of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Four knights, overheard the King's rage and took seriously his shout of "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" On 29 December 1170 Thomas Becket was persuaded to enter the Cathedral through the Cloisters and into the North West Transept. Vespers was in progress when the knights burst in, and found Thomas kneeling at the altar. According to Edward Grim, a monk who watched the murder, Thomas refused to absolve the Bishops and told the Knights that "for the name of Jesus and the protection of the Church, I am ready to embrace death." It was not long before he did so. The knights wielded their weapons and administered three mighty blows, the last one breaking off the tip of a sword. Three days after his death, there began a series of miracles attached to his martyrdom. These are depicted in the miracle windows of the Trinity Chapel. In 1173, Becket was canonized by Pope Alexander III. Pilgrims began to flock to Beckets' shrine in the Cathedral; a year later Henry, in sackcloth, walking barefoot, was among them. Canterbury has been a place of pilgrimage for thousands of people ever since as famously told by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.
