Case Study Primary Case Study : Mill to Resto Bar LILT , Mumbai
Adaptive Reuse Method - Insertion
LILT, a new pan-Asian resto-bar in Mumbai Lower Parel, is an outcome of two friends, Sailesh Vora and Kamil Meredia, collaborating, both as owners and interior designers. Neither an architect or designer by profession, a visit to the resto-bar will leave you thinking otherwise thanks to its contemporary and eclectic design.
The entrance is deceiving with a black tunnel-like passageway that opens out to a 7,500-square-foot space complete with a mezzanine floor and terrace. The dĂŠcor, too, changes after you pass through the small doorway. Wooden flooring, indigo walls, and plush, colourful seating that breaks this colour scheme catch your attention as you enter the space.
Sailesh and Kamil wanted to offer a culinary experience high on sensory cues, amidst a high-octane ambience, and LILT manages to achieve just this. One of the first things you’ll spot as you enter is the wall painted in myriad colours. This painting is also a selfie spot making it an oft-photographed space.

Case Study Primary Case Study On the other end of the restaurant is a stage area where live performances take place, and when nothing is lined up, you have two large LED screens for your viewing pleasure. The day we visited LILT, clips from Charlie Chaplin movies played on loop, and we must say, it was a trip down memory lane.

The highlight of LILT is certainly the bar area, which has a rotating installation on the back wall that spans 400 square feet. With the help of ball bearings and motors to help the structure rotate a complete 360 degrees, this is the highlight of its interiors.

Church of Saint Francis
In Santpedor, Spain, a crippled 18th century church has been restored and rejuvenated with a new purpose and life. The hermitage once included the church and convent of a Franciscan congregation, built by priests in the 1700s. In 1835 however, the convent was sacked, and eventually demolished in 2000. Only the church and part of the perimeter wall of the convent remained standing, although in very poor condition. The project was aimed to convert the Church into an auditorium and a multifunctional cultural facility. The intervention has consolidated the church without deleting the process of deterioration and collapse that the building had suffered.

Volumetric Analysis
The renovation allows visitors to read historical wounds and the building’s most important spatial values, without giving up the use of contemporary language in the new elements introduced in the intervention
The construction and the building methods used have sought to strengthen the church without deleting the signs of deterioration. The intervention has sought to preserve the building’s historic legacy by adding new values that enhance it and give this ancient convent a unique, contemporary form.

The premise of the project intervention was to maintain the size and spatial quality of the nave of the church as well as the important inputs of natural light. Attempting to maintain light inputs at different points led us to propose different solutions: a large skylight on the north side of the apse, a skylight with views of the belfry from the inside of the nave, an open main chapel, and a cut in the roof right at the beginning of the nave to ensure light would reach the inside of the entrance wall.
Concrete Beam Pad Stone Existing Wall
The set of stairs and ramps built, apart from ensuring access to the upper floors of the church, also define a circular path that runs throughout the whole building, much like a museum’s. This circular route allows you to trace back and revisit the church as a whole, from distinct points of view.
Case Study Secondary Case Study : Dry Dock to Museum Danish Maritime Museum
Adaptive Reuse Method - Insertion
The Danish Maritime Museum had to find its place in a unique historic and spatial context; between one of Denmark’s most important and famous buildings and a new, ambitious cultural centre. This is the context in which the museum has proven itself with an understanding of the character of the region and especially the Kronborg Castle. Like a subterranean museum in a dry dock. Leaving the 60 year old dock walls untouched, the galleries are placed below ground and arranged in a continuous loop around the dry dock walls - making the dock the centrepiece of the exhibition - an open, outdoor area where visitors experience the scale of ship building.
