FOOD SECURITY AND SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD

Oxfam’s priorities under this programme is on food security and resilient livelihoods (rural and urban), inclusive of climate change adaptation strategies, diversified livelihoods, women economic empowerment, enterprise development (job creation and income opportunities), access to finance, entrepreneurship, and secure access to productive resources/assets (land and water). We also work on safer work on safer and productive use of remittance from migrants.

Our work is mainly focused on modelling resilient livelihoods, sustain the growth of rural and urban enterprises, women-friendly climate resilient agricultural practices, and fair trade business models, link businesses to markets and work with the private sector to develop sustainable inclusive business models. These interventions are made through selected community-level investments like cooperatives and other producer groups in collaboration with government agencies and private sectors.

Projects Sustainable Livelihoods Support for Earthquake This project supports earthquake-affected men and women (producers) to generate sustainable income, develop market access for the producers and Fair Trade Members Organizations for ten market-assured products, and promote principles of fair trade.

This project supports earthquake-affected families and local cooperatives in one municipality and three rural municipalities by enhancing their technical and vocational knowledge skills, providing farming inputs, tools and technical assistance for better livelihood.

Building Economic Resilience (BER) project:

Enterprise Development Programme (EDP)

This project target 1000 migrant families to Improving the livelihoods and well- being of seasonal migrant families. The project will support six rural cooperatives to develop remittance transfer mechanism and financial products including remittance based saving and credit, insurance and utility services to meet the financial requirements of migrant families. The project strengthens capacity of migrant families to acquire on-farm and off-farm skills to start their own enterprise and the financial skills that will enable them to reduce risks; make smart financial decisions and deal with unexpected emergencies without falling into the high debt trap.

EDP is a business-based approach to development that identifies business opportunities to support entrepreneurs develop and implement viable business plans. EDP supports Pavitra Seed Industry, Surkhet; Pokhara Handicraft Enterprise, and Bhaktapur Vegetable Enterprise to improve their managerial and financial capacity, develop business plans, improve market linkage, support them in accessing loans from banks and financial institutions, and provide business development services.
